- 0:01As each stage of the evolution of consciousness develops, it
- 0:05brings a greater power of knowledge and action than the
- 0:09prior stage. Inevitably, there's an impact on
- 0:13those prior stages. Life effectuated changes in
- 0:17matter. Mind effectuates changes in life
- 0:21and matter. Although the power is not
- 0:24absolute and there is an interchange, a conservative
- 0:29resistance to transformational change, eventually the new power
- 0:34has its impacts. What is not so frequently
- 0:38described, however, is that with this new power come also new
- 0:43forces that make adaptation at the current level of
- 0:47manifestation harder. Thus, while the mind is able to
- 0:51change matter and even control the vital forces of life to a
- 0:56great degree, it has a hard time seeing and changing things on
- 1:01the mental plane. The principle involved is that
- 1:05as long as one is immersed in a particular framework, he cannot
- 1:09see that framework. What he cannot see, he cannot
- 1:13consciously change. It is thus necessary to find a
- 1:17way to step back from, to shift outside the framework to have a
- 1:23real power of transformation. When we apply this to our mental
- 1:28activities, we can see that the shift to the witness standpoint
- 1:33and receptivity to the next power of consciousness, which is
- 1:37in the process of manifesting, represent the methods needed to
- 1:42gain control and mastery over the action of the mind itself.
- 1:49Sri Rabindra writes quote To reject doubts means control of
- 1:551's thoughts. Very certainly so, but the
- 1:59control of 1's thoughts is as necessary as the control of 1's
- 2:03vital desires and passions or the control of the movements of
- 2:081's body. For the yoga and not for the
- 2:12yoga only. One cannot be a fully
- 2:16developmental being even if one is not a control of the
- 2:20thoughts, is not their observer, judge, master, the mental
- 2:27Purusha mano Maya, purusha Sakshi anumanta ishwara.
- 2:34It is no more proper for the mental being to be the tennis
- 2:38ball of unruly and uncontrollable thoughts than to
- 2:42be a rudderless ship in the storm of the desires and
- 2:45passions, or a slave of either the inertia or the impulses of
- 2:51the body. I know it is more difficult
- 2:54because man, being primarily a creature of mental procrity,
- 2:59identifies himself with the movements of his mind, and
- 3:03cannot at once dissociate himself and stand free from the
- 3:06swirl and eddies of the mind Whirlpool.
- 3:11It is comparatively easy for him to put a control on his body, at
- 3:16least on a certain part of its movements.
- 3:19It is less easy, but still very possible, after a struggle, to
- 3:24put a mental control on his vital impulsions and desires.
- 3:28But to sit, like the tantric Yogi on the river above the
- 3:32Whirlpool of his thoughts is less facile.
- 3:37Nevertheless, it can be done. All developed mental men, those
- 3:43who get beyond the average, have in one way or other, where at
- 3:47least at certain times and for certain purposes, to separate
- 3:52the two parts of the mind. The active part, which is a
- 3:56factory of thoughts, and the quiet masterful part which is at
- 4:01once a witness and a will, observing them, judging,
- 4:07rejecting, eliminating, accepting, ordering, corrections
- 4:12and changes. The master in the House of mind
- 4:16capable of self, empire, some rajya.
- 4:21The Yogi goes still farther. He is not only a master there,
- 4:26but even while in mind, in a way, he gets out of it, as it
- 4:31were, and stands above or quite back from it and free.
- 4:35For him the image of the factory of thoughts is no longer quite
- 4:40valid, for he sees that thoughts come from outside, from the
- 4:45universal mind or universal nature, sometimes formed and
- 4:51distinct, sometimes unformed, and then they are given shape
- 4:56somewhere in us. The principal business of our
- 5:00mind is either a response of acceptance or a refusal to these
- 5:05thought waves as also vital waves, subtle physical energy
- 5:10waves or this giving personal mental form to thought stuff or
- 5:15vital movements from the environing nature force.
- 5:21The possibilities of a mental being are not limited.
- 5:24It can be the free witness and master in its own house.
- 5:29A progressive freedom and mastery over 1's mind is
- 5:32perfectly within the possibilities of anyone who has
- 5:36faith and will to undertake it. End Quote Reference Sri
