- 0:37Snyder of The Daily Independent. Johnny and Marie Justice hired
- 0:43Jeremiah Lincolnship as a temporary employee at Jay and Jay's
- 0:47Family restaurant on February twenty seventh, two thousand eight, eighteen
- 0:53years later to the date. He was clearing tables and
- 0:57washing dishes on the final day marked the end of
- 1:00a sixty seven year era of a dining staple in
- 1:04the community. I was supposed to work for three weeks,
- 1:08and here I am still, he said, while cleaning a booth.
- 1:13Like many others who entered the restaurant, he was hooked
- 1:16from the start. Jay and Jay's officially closed for good
- 1:20at eight pm Friday, February twenty seventh, nearly seven decades
- 1:25after opening as a hot dog stand in nineteen fifty nine,
- 1:29the restaurant, which featured the original diner counter from the
- 1:34hot dog stand on Thirteenth Street, opened in nineteen sixty four.
- 1:39The final week was busy, especially Thursday, when the restaurant
- 1:44experienced record single day sales. Ryan Justice, Johnny ann Mary's grandson,
- 1:50said he's been the sole owner since twenty eighteen. He
- 1:55said the restaurant went from forty five employees pre COVID
- 1:59to about fifteen in twenty twenty one to just seven
- 2:03as of closing time. I'm kind of by myself now,
- 2:07Justice said Friday. There were five of us that used
- 2:11to run this together. My grandparents passed away, and my
- 2:15brother and father passed away. Justice said his fiance has
- 2:20assisted him. They planned to reopen a flower shop in
- 2:24the near future. Brenda Shannon spent the bulk of her
- 2:28thirty year career at Jay and Jay's waiting tables. She
- 2:31said she will miss the delicious home cook food and
- 2:34greg company, both customers and fellow employees. Everybody here is
- 2:41just like family, Shannon said Friday afternoon. When the end
- 2:45of the day comes, it'll really get emotional knowing you
- 2:49ain't going to be here anymore. Christy Blankenship, Shannon's sister
- 2:55and Jeremiah's wife, logged twenty five years at Jay and Jay's.
- 3:00She worked most of her days in the kitchen. Christy
- 3:03Blankenships said, while restaurant work is challenging, the atmospheric Jay
- 3:08and Jays was always relaxing because everybody gets along. You're
- 3:12not stressed out. For the Blankenships, Jay and Jays has
- 3:17been like a second home. Throughout the last couple of weeks,
- 3:20several regulars came in to take pictures and request items
- 3:25such as old men us for scrap books. I've always
- 3:29loved hearing stories from multiple generations. Justice said, it's four
- 3:34generations for a lot of people. People will come in
- 3:38and they've been here with their parents, their kids, and
- 3:41now they're grandkids. It's a place where people feel comfortable
- 3:45coming in. It's like going to grandma's house. Justice is
- 3:50proud of his grandparents, he said. Christi Blankenship called Johnny
- 3:54and Mary Justice the sweetest people. They would do anything
- 3:58for anybody, She said. We called them Mamma and Papa.
- 4:03They were everybody's Mamma and papol. They would go out
- 4:07and sit with customers, they'd come in and work with us.
- 4:11Mary would sometimes come in at five point thirty in
- 4:13the morning and stay untill nine at night. You couldn't
- 4:17find better people. Shannon Schitt said she has a hard
- 4:21time imagining working anywhere else, so she's retiring. It's been
- 4:26a great place to work, she said. Justice said he

- 4:43and more. Christy Blankenship said Friday was bittersweet. She said
- 4:49she is taking a month off before finding another job.

- 5:11Board of the Daily Independent, the Ashland area y MCA
- 5:16has broken its own membership record. Executive directors got Campbell
- 5:21said February figures show membership hit five thousand, seventy five units.
- 5:28That is a number of memberships, some of which are
- 5:31couple or family memberships, meaning the total number using the
- 5:34facilities is even higher. Previously, the highest membership was five thousand,
- 5:41fifty two units in two thousand one. Given changes in
- 5:46the community, the achievement is especially striking. In two thousand
- 5:50one you had Armco, Ashland Oil headquarters, g T. E.
- 5:56Salve and the coke plant. Campbell said, there were large
- 6:01corporations here when we had our all time membership high.
- 6:06We have none of that now, and we also have
- 6:09competition now. Above all, Campbell said he credits the work
- 6:13of God as enabling the wise growth. He said he
- 6:17and the staff also have put in the work to
- 6:19create a Surgeon membership, including visiting with businesses in the

- 6:28corporate memberships. We have lots of programs for children and
- 6:33for seniors. Campbell said. The board has been proactive in
- 6:38allowing us to make positive changes. We're now open twenty
- 6:42four to seven and we have bubbles and sweets so
- 6:45you can grab a coffee or protein drink, and we're
- 6:49doing some renovations. The Fall Basketball League started with about

- 10:25Show Begin. Paramount Theater, Ashland celebrates grand reopening. By Aaron
- 10:31Snyder of The Daily Independent, Matt Hammond remembers walking into
- 10:36the Paramount Theater at age thirteen as a nervous teenager
- 10:41preparing to sing for an audition. Sixteen years later, he
- 10:45is now the venue's executive director. Everybody has a paramount moment,
- 10:51Hammond said. From the second you walk into this building,
- 10:55you know how important it is. But what's most important
- 10:58is the people who have passed through it. The Paramount Theater,
- 11:03Ashland celebrated its grand reopening on Thursday evening. More than
- 11:08two hundred people attended the event, which featured food cooked
- 11:12in house, drinks, posters advertising upcoming shows, and renderings of
- 11:18the final product pairing the Paramount with the incoming Conference Center.
- 11:24Venue Works began managing the venue, which is owned by
- 11:27the City of Ashland, on January first. Venue Works is
- 11:32in partnership with AP three, which will handle the construction
- 11:36of the conference center. AP three and Venue Works signed
- 11:41a five year agreement with the city, which purchased the
- 11:44Paramount's facilities for three million dollars in twenty twenty four.
- 11:50Venue Works creates memories, said hr Cook, Regional vice president
- 11:55of Operations of Venue Works. We don't own the venues,
- 11:59but we manage the assets of those communities. Cook credited
- 12:05the city commissioned City staff, community partners in City Attorney
- 12:09Andrew Wheeler for helping make the reopening a smooth transition.
- 12:14I'm so happy to have gotten to this point, said
- 12:17Mayor Chuck Charles. Let the show begin, Cook said, one
- 12:22of the first orders of business was hirer In hiring
- 12:25an executive director. Twenty five people applied, but Hammond, the
- 12:30former director of Paramount Players, wasn't one of them. I
- 12:34got to talking to him and asked, why didn't you
- 12:36apply for the position, Cook said. He told me, I
- 12:41don't know. I didn't think I was qualified. The more
- 12:44I talked to him, I saw a lot of talent there.
- 12:47He knows everybody, He's done everything. He's twenty nine years old.
- 12:53He's a go getter, and he's local. Hammond graduated from
- 12:57the University of Kentucky with a master's degree in theater
- 13:01management in twenty twenty three. You assume you're going to
- 13:05have to leave home to do that, But my question is,
- 13:09why can't an executive director come from Ashland, Kentucky, Hammond said.
- 13:15Hammond introduced his executive team Thursday, Colby Rice, marketing director,
- 13:21Art Lima, event manager, and Jason Webb. This dude can
- 13:26cook guys, Hammond said of Webb, who was busy carving
- 13:30meat for guests most of the evening. Hammond announced the
- 13:34Summer Arts Academy is returning, so summer camps we'll be back.
- 13:39He also pulled back the curtain on some news regarding
- 13:42a popular longtime children's show. In October, we will have
- 13:47Sesame Street Live, he said, prompting applause. The Paramount will
- 13:52show two movies in March, he said, The Wizard of
- 13:55Oz and Legally Blonde. Viewers just need to donate pet
- 14:00food or toy to gain admission. Cook and Hammond both
- 14:05announced the Paramount Players, led by a Pack Incorporated, is
- 14:09returning auditions for the SpongeBob musical, scheduled for late April
- 14:16or on Friday. Hammond said the Festival of Trees and
- 14:20Trains will also continue, as will local organizations such as
- 14:25the Ashland Youth Ballet and Boyd County High School Band.
- 14:29Pack Incorporated hasn't gone anywhere, Cook said, We're working together
- 14:34to bring the entertainment and education here. Cook introduced members
- 14:39of the corporate staff, including Chris Carton, vice president of
- 14:44Food and Beverage Operations, j R. Cook, Operations director at
- 14:49the Sister Paramount in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Mike Silva,
- 14:54COO of Venue Works. Silva thanked d Ashland for welcoming
- 14:59venue Works into the community. Silva said Venue Works is
- 15:04one hundred percent employee owned. While based in Iowa, venue
- 15:08Works has a presence across the country. Silva said. He
- 15:13talked about the importance and strategy of the company's locations.
- 15:18We are in Juliette, not Chicago, in Cedar Rapids, not
- 15:23Des Moines, Rochester, not Buffalo. Silva said, We're going to
- 15:29market the heck out of this building locally, regionally, and nationally.
- 15:33Silva added, Ashland, Kentucky will be on the lips and
- 15:37tongues of music agents across the country. Hammond said the
- 15:41team's goal was to not have a dark period. We'll
- 15:45be here for another ninety five years, he said, of
- 15:48the ninety five year old venue. You guys are going
- 15:52to keep this alive. The community loves this place. According
- 15:57to hamm In, the Paramount has forty five confirmed events
- 16:01and forty seven on hold. The Paramount has a bright future,
- 16:05he said. Jake Schumer of AP three LLC said construction
- 16:11will begin on the largely state funded conference center set
- 16:15to be adjacent to the Paramount next week. Targeted completion
- 16:20is October twenty twenty seven. There's good synergy with the
- 16:24theater and the conference center, Schumer said. We're real excited
- 16:29about that things that are happening here in Ashland. Our

- 19:23really supportive. The girls team and girls coach Janie Moyer
- 19:28have been great. Jane is a godsend. She's done an
- 19:32absolutely amazing job with them. Colton Treadway said his family
- 19:37moved from Maryland to the area in twenty twenty three
