- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Jim Hayes alongside Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn and gentlemen.
- 0:15Speaker 1: You always know that we start the show with a request,
- 0:20Speaker 1: with a pitch, as it were, to get to seven
- 0:23Speaker 1: thousand subscribers. Usually we have an ugly graphic, but I'm
- 0:27Speaker 1: trying to let people know this is a family oriented show.
- 0:31Speaker 1: So I found an old picture of Lance Linn to
- 0:34Speaker 1: show that we are a family oriented podcast. And look
- 0:38Speaker 1: at that Lance by a Christmas tree. So if you
- 0:42Speaker 1: are a family oriented person, subscribe to this podcast. Go ahead,
- 0:46Speaker 1: hit the subscribe button. If you know other family oriented people,
- 0:50Speaker 1: tell them about this podcast and say it's for the family.
- 0:54Speaker 1: I saw Lance Linn with a Christmas tree, and tell
- 0:56Speaker 1: them to subscribe. And gentlemen, slowly we are getting to
- 1:01Speaker 1: seven thousand.
- 1:02Speaker 2: I hope you liked that picture. Lance That was.
- 1:05Speaker 1: From my uh my old photos that I saved in
- 1:09Speaker 1: my phone.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Yeah, what year with that? That had been like fourteen, It
- 1:15Speaker 3: was too long ago to remember.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Kyle, did you like that picture?
- 1:20Speaker 4: I mean, considering it's May eleventh and we're not even
- 1:23Speaker 4: close to Christmas, I don't know. I mean how did
- 1:26Speaker 4: you get a picture Christmas tree or something like?
- 1:31Speaker 3: It was in the club that's back when I worked
- 1:33Speaker 3: out in the clubhouse every day in the off season
- 1:36Speaker 3: and Jim was doing a tour thing.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Yeah, that's where I was doing something. So there we go.
- 1:43Speaker 4: Wow, I'm telling you what if that slows our coral,
- 1:46Speaker 4: If that slows our creep is seven thousand, that's your fault.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Yeah, no it's not not. You gon enhance it. I
- 1:52Speaker 2: was going to pick it up.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Yeah, that was before arbitration money. So I was still
- 1:57Speaker 3: working at the clubhouse.
- 2:01Speaker 2: That was before you guys got the bags. As the
- 2:03Speaker 2: kids say.
- 2:06Speaker 1: The Cardinals have the off day today, two of four
- 2:09Speaker 1: in San Diego.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Look, if you play five hundred.
- 2:12Speaker 1: On the road, generally speaking, you'll be fine in San Diego.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Though they're not playing great this year, pretty good ball club.
- 2:20Speaker 1: The pitching has been unbelievable. Right, So they gave up
- 2:24Speaker 1: a total of four runs in San Diego in the
- 2:30Speaker 1: four games, right, just fourteen hits over the four games.
- 2:34Speaker 1: I'm sorry, eight runs. I did the math wrong.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Eight runs, fourteen hits in San Diego four game series.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Pretty good.
- 2:41Speaker 1: And if you look what the Cardinals have done in
- 2:44Speaker 1: terms of pitching started bullpen over their last twelve games,
- 2:48Speaker 1: you're thinking, maybe maybe this will hold up. So I'm
- 2:53Speaker 1: going to start with Lance, who's generally more negative. What
- 2:56Speaker 1: are you finding out about the cardinal rotation to this point,
- 3:00Speaker 1: because you have to admit it's.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Been pretty pretty good.
- 3:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 3:05Speaker 3: No, I mean, I think you're they're they're limiting runs,
- 3:07Speaker 3: they're limiting there's limiting walks. The hits are gonna, you know,
- 3:11Speaker 3: they're gonna come and go, you know, throughout the course
- 3:14Speaker 3: of a year. I think the main thing what everyone's
- 3:17Speaker 3: gonna you know, always hang. You know, what what they're
- 3:20Speaker 3: gonna be on is their strikeouts, you know, and griev
- 3:23Speaker 3: you through the you know, six innings, punched out nine.
- 3:25Speaker 3: So if you look at that set line compared to
- 3:28Speaker 3: what he's had, that's more in line with what is
- 3:31Speaker 3: e er is. You know, it's expected eras like was
- 3:34Speaker 3: over a six before he started that game, which is wild, right.
- 3:37Speaker 3: So I think that we've got guys on the team
- 3:40Speaker 3: that change speeds, they limit hard contact, you know, they
- 3:44Speaker 3: keeps ball on the ground for the most part and
- 3:46Speaker 3: stuff like that. With that defense is going to play well.
- 3:48Speaker 3: So if the strikeout numbers start trickling up, which I
- 3:51Speaker 3: think they will because they they have the ability to
- 3:53Speaker 3: strike people out. I think it's you know, learning when
- 3:56Speaker 3: and where you can go for it and do the
- 3:58Speaker 3: things you're you're capable of, and not getting yourself in
- 4:02Speaker 3: negative counts by chasing strikeouts. But as a whole, I
- 4:05Speaker 3: think Dusky's got them in a good spot on knowing
- 4:08Speaker 3: what they do well and staying within themselves and letting
- 4:11Speaker 3: the game dictate when you go for the strikeouts and
- 4:14Speaker 3: when you make pitches, get quality outs, quick outs, and
- 4:18Speaker 3: soft contacts. So all in all, they have talented arms.
- 4:22Speaker 3: I think our whole thing that we're worried about is
- 4:24Speaker 3: for me, the whole thing I'm worried about moving forward
- 4:27Speaker 3: is the depth. Right if anything happens to them injury wise,
- 4:33Speaker 3: they might not have the depth to do the things
- 4:35Speaker 3: they do. And as you go in a season, innings
- 4:38Speaker 3: build up, and not one person has ever thrown thirty
- 4:42Speaker 3: plus starts on a hundred plus eighty on this staff.
- 4:45Speaker 3: So those are the things that make me worried as
- 4:48Speaker 3: the year goes on. And even in the bullpen, Jojo
- 4:51Speaker 3: and Stank are the only two that have ever pitched
- 4:54Speaker 3: a full season in the big leagues in the bullpen.
- 4:57Speaker 3: So those are the things I'm worried about. Are they
- 4:59Speaker 3: talented yes, can they get outs yes, can they get
- 5:02Speaker 3: outside a high level yes? Can they sustain it physically
- 5:05Speaker 3: for a whole year? And is there any depth to
- 5:08Speaker 3: help out when those things do happen. That's gonna be
- 5:10Speaker 3: the question as this team moves forward.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Accumulation, Kyle, what do you think.
- 5:18Speaker 4: You know, I'm just looking at some of the last
- 5:20Speaker 4: you know, the last couple of weeks. One thing that
- 5:23Speaker 4: stands out to me about the Cardinals. Of teams that
- 5:27Speaker 4: have played more than like four or five games, let's
- 5:32Speaker 4: just let's actually say everybody of the teams that have
- 5:34Speaker 4: played six or more games against teams above five hundred,
- 5:38Speaker 4: the race have the best record at five and one.
- 5:40Speaker 4: And I mean I'm not doing the division here, but
- 5:42Speaker 4: I think the Cardinals have the second best record at
- 5:44Speaker 4: nine to four. I think that's a big deal. Then,
- 5:47Speaker 4: as I look at the Cardinals last couple of weeks,
- 5:51Speaker 4: if anybody at the beginning of the season would have
- 5:53Speaker 4: said between the Dodgers, Milwaukee and San Diego series to
- 5:59Speaker 4: start May, the Cardinals would be two three, four, five, five,
- 6:03Speaker 4: and four in those nine games.
- 6:06Speaker 5: I think they would have been like, are you crazy?
- 6:09Speaker 4: So, I mean, I think in San Diego the Cardinals
- 6:12Speaker 4: beat the Padres for thirty five of the thirty seven
- 6:15Speaker 4: innings they played. You know, they gave up a late
- 6:17Speaker 4: homer there from Riley and the three spot in the
- 6:20Speaker 4: fifth inning on Saturday. They're playing really good baseball. Starting
- 6:26Speaker 4: pitching is doing an incredible job, Jim. I understand, like
- 6:31Speaker 4: maybe the Potters haven't been hitting, you know how we
- 6:34Speaker 4: believe they can hit. But if my numbers are matching up,
- 6:37Speaker 4: they're a top that division right now, ahead of the Dodgers,
- 6:41Speaker 4: who have shown that they're human. So I think the
- 6:44Speaker 4: Cardinals are are really doing a lot, and I think
- 6:47Speaker 4: they're pitching has a lot to do with it, because,
- 6:49Speaker 4: like Lance said, a young offense is going to go
- 6:51Speaker 4: through tough time pitching staff and you know, shoot, that's
- 6:56Speaker 4: a really good pitching staff that they just did well
- 6:59Speaker 4: against out there.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Yeah, the hitting is the thing I think that has
- 7:04Speaker 1: frustrated some Padres fans. Lance, let's have a segment and
- 7:07Speaker 1: appreciate Michael McGreevy. Now you brought up expected era, and
- 7:11Speaker 1: sometimes those numbers have merit, and sometimes they don't. But
- 7:17Speaker 1: one thing we've seen about McGreevy is that he's able
- 7:19Speaker 1: to adjust adapt First of all, he's pitching in front
- 7:23Speaker 1: of family and friends. Adds a little pressure to it
- 7:26Speaker 1: because he's from the San Diego areas Sant Clementy, and
- 7:30Speaker 1: he goes out and he pitches probably his best game
- 7:32Speaker 1: six innings, nine k's, and uh, there's a lot of
- 7:36Speaker 1: questions about it. Does he have enough vela to get
- 7:38Speaker 1: through it? He's got a lot of pitches and he
- 7:40Speaker 1: seems to be able to figure out on the fly
- 7:43Speaker 1: how to attack opposing hitters. What do you make of
- 7:46Speaker 1: what McGreevey and is era right now? Is a ticket
- 7:49Speaker 1: above two? What do you make about what he's been
- 7:52Speaker 1: able to accomplish a quarter the way through the season.
- 7:56Speaker 3: No, I think it's great. I mean you're looking at
- 7:58Speaker 3: a guy who has all the tools and all the
- 8:00Speaker 3: pitches to do the things he needs to do. I
- 8:01Speaker 3: think nowadays people see, Okay, well, he's struck out nine
- 8:05Speaker 3: the other day, so that's a that's a plus, right
- 8:07Speaker 3: if he can If you're looking at you, you look
- 8:09Speaker 3: up at the end of every outing and he's right around.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Let's say six innings, five or six strikeouts or even
- 8:16Speaker 3: in the four strikeouts range. And then he doesn't throw
- 8:20Speaker 3: one hundred miles an hour or you know, ninety five plus.
- 8:23Speaker 3: But he's got multiple pitches. They all come out of
- 8:26Speaker 3: the same tunnels. He's able to throw him where he
- 8:28Speaker 3: wants to, and he's able to get soft contact. That's
- 8:31Speaker 3: called pitching. Right. He isn't a I need to spin
- 8:35Speaker 3: it hard or vlo guy, which every most everyone else is.
- 8:39Speaker 3: So he brings something different and can get outs at
- 8:43Speaker 3: a different level. If he tried to throw the ball harder,
- 8:45Speaker 3: he would miss his spots and probably have harder contact. Right.
- 8:48Speaker 3: So I think you need to realize that everybody can
- 8:51Speaker 3: get outs in the big league if they do it
- 8:54Speaker 3: a way that they're capable of. And what he's showing
- 8:57Speaker 3: is there are multiple ways to do it. He's got
- 8:59Speaker 3: all the pitches. Like I said, I think the main
- 9:02Speaker 3: thing with him is going to be don't try to
- 9:06Speaker 3: be something you're not. Be okay with what you have
- 9:09Speaker 3: because what you have is multiple quality offerings that can
- 9:13Speaker 3: keep hitters off balance, and then you use your defense
- 9:16Speaker 3: very well. You see, every every good rotation has guys
- 9:21Speaker 3: like that. I mean with your work. Kyle was one
- 9:24Speaker 3: of those guys, and they pitch a long time in
- 9:26Speaker 3: this game and they have a chance to make a
- 9:28Speaker 3: lot of money and get a lot of wins. He's
- 9:31Speaker 3: got all those tools to do the same thing that
- 9:33Speaker 3: someone like Kyle did in his career, and I think
- 9:36Speaker 3: that's what people need to realize. He's not going to
- 9:38Speaker 3: be a ten strikeout prainning guy or a per nine guy,
- 9:40Speaker 3: and he doesn't have to be. If he's anywhere in
- 9:42Speaker 3: the seven eight range, he's going to be. He's going
- 9:45Speaker 3: to be a really, really good pitcher for a long time,
- 9:50Speaker 3: and he.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Can get a lovely patio like cal Gibson has.
- 9:56Speaker 5: The new ones going up right now.
- 9:58Speaker 3: The new ones not in California.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Yeah, not in California. You got to stay in the Midwest.
- 10:04Speaker 4: The new ones going up now, Jim. Maybe here by
- 10:06Speaker 4: the end of the summer, we'll show you the new patio,
- 10:08Speaker 4: will do an outdoor episode out there. I assumed that
- 10:12Speaker 4: was you kicking it to me, Jim, so I'll go
- 10:13Speaker 4: ahead and put my.
- 10:15Speaker 5: Sense in here.
- 10:15Speaker 4: It's what's interesting one. I think when we look at
- 10:19Speaker 4: the teams that McGreevy has done this against. I think
- 10:22Speaker 4: that's pretty good. Obviously, the Dodgers and the Padres, Cleveland
- 10:26Speaker 4: playoff team, Detroit playoff team, Tampa playoff team. He's done
- 10:31Speaker 4: it against some good some good teams, and Seattle, by
- 10:35Speaker 4: all accounts, is probably a playoff team. So the only
- 10:37Speaker 4: non playoff teams he faces Washington in Miami, all right,
- 10:40Speaker 4: and Washington, I think, what don't they have, like the
- 10:42Speaker 4: most they get their head a ton of homers or
- 10:44Speaker 4: something like that. So he's faced some good offenses. So
- 10:49Speaker 4: he's done well. What I wanted to look here is
- 10:51Speaker 4: at his walks. Right, So the whole time in my career,
- 10:54Speaker 4: walks ended up being a little bit of a hiccup
- 10:58Speaker 4: chance for me. Now I looked at it, some of
- 11:01Speaker 4: his good starts, he actually has a couple walks because
- 11:03Speaker 4: I think there's gonna be some offenses where you stay
- 11:05Speaker 4: on the edges. He's a ground ball pitcher. You have
- 11:08Speaker 4: a good defense, don't give in when you don't have
- 11:11Speaker 4: to give in, And I think that's something that he'll
- 11:13Speaker 4: he will figure out the time, if he hasn't already,
- 11:16Speaker 4: when to give in, when he needs to stay in
- 11:18Speaker 4: the strike zone. Maybe when the best chance here is
- 11:20Speaker 4: to get yourself. Don't give something in the middle of
- 11:23Speaker 4: the zone. Here, give the free base and go get
- 11:26Speaker 4: your double play. That's not always the best strategy, obviously,
- 11:29Speaker 4: but I mean he's got you three walks against the Dodgers,
- 11:32Speaker 4: no runs, two walks against the Padres, no runs. He
- 11:36Speaker 4: can pitch even with guys on base, and he's got
- 11:39Speaker 4: a good defense behind him. So Glenn Perkins with somebody
- 11:42Speaker 4: in Minnesota who told me, Gibby, you can go out
- 11:44Speaker 4: there and try to get strikeouts all you want, but
- 11:46Speaker 4: if you don't walk guys every six innings, just like
- 11:49Speaker 4: Lance just said, try to have four or five strikeouts.
- 11:51Speaker 4: And if you have four or five strikeouts in your
- 11:53Speaker 4: six innings and you have him at the right time,
- 11:55Speaker 4: you're gonna be just fine. Because baseball really is a
- 11:59Speaker 4: game of when. You know, when Michael McGreevey gets that
- 12:02Speaker 4: big strikeout is more important than sometimes how many he gets.
- 12:05Speaker 4: You know, I would love to have that strikeout based
- 12:07Speaker 4: load of two outs, not first guy the inning, right,
- 12:10Speaker 4: So if he can mix those in at the right times,
- 12:12Speaker 4: he's gonna be just fine without the strikeouts.
- 12:15Speaker 1: He's got a lot of pitches in his arsenal. I
- 12:18Speaker 1: think his biggest weapon, though, is his maturity. He's wise
- 12:21Speaker 1: beyond his years, and he understands the art of pitching
- 12:24Speaker 1: and not being a thrower. You're watching Cardinal Territory on
- 12:28Speaker 1: the Foul Territory Network.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Big Dog.
- 12:31Speaker 6: You know how it is, man, We're always hungry and

- 12:41Speaker 6: guess what, Kratzy, I know it helps you out the
- 12:43Speaker 6: household wife. He is happy and the kids are extra happy.
- 12:47Speaker 7: I'm good at two things. Cooking is one of them,
- 12:50Speaker 7: but not trying to choose what we're gonna have. I've
- 12:53Speaker 7: gone fifteen meals so far and they haven't given me
- 12:56Speaker 7: one repeat meal. There's so many to choose from, and
- 12:59Speaker 7: they can make any for me.
- 13:00Speaker 6: Yeah, And I think the best part of it is
- 13:02Speaker 6: is for me. I'm very particular. I'm trying new things
- 13:05Speaker 6: and I'm really really liking these things from HelloFresh. Go

- 13:29Speaker 6: I know everybody would love that.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Again, it's an off day for the Cardinals. They will
- 13:34Speaker 1: be in Sacramento to take on the Sacramento As. Of course,
- 13:39Speaker 1: the A's will be in Las Vegas in twenty twenty eight.
- 13:43Speaker 2: What a what a.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Weird season this is for Major League Baseball? Right, there's
- 13:49Speaker 1: uncertainty with the broadcast rights, there could be a lockout.
- 13:53Speaker 1: And you look in the American League and there's three
- 13:55Speaker 1: teams over five hundred. You look in the NL Central,
- 13:58Speaker 1: every team is is above five hundred.
- 14:01Speaker 3: Right.
- 14:02Speaker 1: I don't know what to make of what's going on
- 14:05Speaker 1: in baseball this year. Lance, Does any of this make
- 14:09Speaker 1: sense to you that the Cardinals are playing in Sacramento
- 14:13Speaker 1: tonight or I'm sorry.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, like when you look at it off
- 14:18Speaker 3: day in Sacramento something we never said, Kyle, So, uh,
- 14:24Speaker 3: you know, it's interesting, right it is. It's a crazy game.
- 14:26Speaker 3: You know. Obviously they're you know, adding new ballparks, new cities,
- 14:31Speaker 3: stuff like that. I mean that's how the game's growing.
- 14:34Speaker 3: I will say this Oakland, the coliseum, it needed some help.
- 14:40Speaker 3: So I think that when you when you look at it,
- 14:43Speaker 3: I think we might have enjoyed Sacramento a little bit
- 14:45Speaker 3: more than we did. That's my guess. So but yeah,
- 14:49Speaker 3: it's it's still interesting to see the A's in Sacramento.
- 14:53Speaker 3: But all in counts. I mean, they're they're they're trying,
- 14:55Speaker 3: they're doing their thing. It's gonna be fun to see
- 14:57Speaker 3: them in in Vegas when it comes time. And when
- 14:59Speaker 3: you look at the win lost the record, I in
- 15:01Speaker 3: that sense love it right because all these teams that
- 15:05Speaker 3: all the computer people typed into their things said this
- 15:08Speaker 3: and that, as of right now, they're wrong. So it
- 15:12Speaker 3: shows you that baseball still has to be played. People
- 15:16Speaker 3: that are standing behind or sitting behind computer screens wearing
- 15:19Speaker 3: khakis and tucked in shirts do not know everything. So
- 15:24Speaker 3: that's where I'm going to talk about right now, is
- 15:26Speaker 3: that's what I love about baseball. Not to say these
- 15:28Speaker 3: teams that are really good and spend a lot of
- 15:30Speaker 3: money aren't going to win games. But you know, sometimes
- 15:33Speaker 3: you got to play the game and the players actually matter,
- 15:36Speaker 3: not the algorithm that you put in for what you
- 15:39Speaker 3: think should be what it is.
- 15:42Speaker 1: So when Tampa had the problems, Kyle right, they had
- 15:45Speaker 1: to play where they play spring training games. Sacramento is
- 15:49Speaker 1: a minor league ball park that's being used temporarily by
- 15:53Speaker 1: the A's for a major league or does that stuff
- 15:56Speaker 1: even matter? I mean, I go back to when Wrigley
- 16:00Speaker 1: hadn't been renovated yet and that was for the visiting
- 16:03Speaker 1: team that was a minor league setup and didn't bother
- 16:07Speaker 1: anyone back then? Should this bother major leaguers to be
- 16:11Speaker 1: playing in a ballpark like that?
- 16:14Speaker 4: I mean, bothering them? And something that gets talked about
- 16:17Speaker 4: is probably different. You know, I'm guessing not many people
- 16:21Speaker 4: will come out in the media and talk about the
- 16:23Speaker 4: downsides of being in Sacramento or how bad the Chicago
- 16:27Speaker 4: Clubhouse used to be. You know, it just kind of
- 16:29Speaker 4: looks like whining and not really a good look, I
- 16:34Speaker 4: would guess. But I mean there's a lot of talk.
- 16:36Speaker 4: I guarantee, I've never been to that Sacramento park. It
- 16:38Speaker 4: could be a one of the nicer minor league parks.
- 16:40Speaker 4: I have no idea, but yeah, I mean I think
- 16:43Speaker 4: it's a it's interesting last year you know, playing in
- 16:48Speaker 4: the spring training complex like the Rays did all year
- 16:51Speaker 4: with it being a divisional rival. The Yankee Spring training
- 16:54Speaker 4: Complex was interesting also, But I mean it's I think
- 16:58Speaker 4: when it comes down to it, like in that situation,
- 17:02Speaker 4: owners decide, Hey, what's best for the game of baseball, right,
- 17:05Speaker 4: So I'm glad that one worked out Sacramento. I've always
- 17:08Speaker 4: kind of I don't think it's gonna play out because
- 17:10Speaker 4: it seems like Vegas is for sure gonna happen. But
- 17:12Speaker 4: I always kind of thought there was a chance that
- 17:14Speaker 4: they stayed in Sacramento depending on how some of those
- 17:17Speaker 4: Vegas stuff worked out. I don't even know are they
- 17:20Speaker 4: even calling them the Sacramento A's. I feel like they're
- 17:23Speaker 4: just the Athletics.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Nope, they're Sacramento for this year.
- 17:27Speaker 5: Okay, all right.
- 17:30Speaker 4: I mean I think it's great for the people of Sacramento.
- 17:32Speaker 4: I mean, there's probably a lot of A's fans up there.
- 17:35Speaker 4: It's probably a pretty cool opportunity for them. So one
- 17:38Speaker 4: thing I do want to point out in the weirdness
- 17:40Speaker 4: of baseball. You know, we talked about the National League
- 17:42Speaker 4: in the American League and the record disparity the National
- 17:45Speaker 4: League is twenty three games over five hundred against the
- 17:48Speaker 4: American League so far in twenty twenty six. That's pretty
- 17:52Speaker 4: crazy considering we're just in the beginning of May. But
- 17:55Speaker 4: I think it shows maybe the National League has, you know,
- 17:58Speaker 4: obviously have some team that have outdone expectations. The American
- 18:02Speaker 4: League has plenty of teams that have not lived up
- 18:04Speaker 4: to the expectations, Seattle being under five hundred, Houston being
- 18:08Speaker 4: in the cellar of the American League, and Boston and
- 18:12Speaker 4: you know, Kansas City, Detroit all being under five hundred.
- 18:15Speaker 4: So definitely some teams that haven't lived up to expectations.
- 18:18Speaker 4: But the National League has been playing really well so far.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Now, Lambs, I want to take you back to the
- 18:24Speaker 1: coliseum because you say, you know, you don't want to
- 18:27Speaker 1: complain about the facilities because it's a bad look. But
- 18:31Speaker 1: I think you were there when one year there was
- 18:34Speaker 1: ross sewage leaking into the visitors clubhouse.
- 18:39Speaker 5: It was raw.
- 18:40Speaker 3: When you're walking around in shit, you can complain about it,
- 18:43Speaker 3: literal shit.
- 18:46Speaker 4: All right, But you know what the other thing is,
- 18:48Speaker 4: everybody heard about that story. So when you were walking
- 18:51Speaker 4: around that locker room, you never walked around there without
- 18:54Speaker 4: shower shoes on every now and then you might go
- 18:56Speaker 4: to like a locker and sit there and not have
- 18:58Speaker 4: her shower shoes on. But you just never knew was
- 19:00Speaker 4: the carpet wet just from somebody's shower or is this
- 19:04Speaker 4: leaking from somewhere else. So I would say the coliseum
- 19:06Speaker 4: was a place that people were allowed to complain about.
- 19:09Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a huge situations.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Even ignoring the sewage aspect. When players went to the
- 19:21Speaker 1: field out of the visitors clubhouse, there was a hallway
- 19:25Speaker 1: and there was a piece of tape down the middle
- 19:28Speaker 1: of that corridor, fans on one side, players on the other,
- 19:33Speaker 1: and it said there was a sign, please don't talk
- 19:36Speaker 1: to the players. Can you imagine, I mean, you guys
- 19:39Speaker 1: been through it. I can't imagine you got sauced up
- 19:43Speaker 1: fans walking right next to you down a corridor that
- 19:47Speaker 1: you have to use to get to the field.
- 19:48Speaker 2: That's not a good recipe.
- 19:51Speaker 5: Yeah, but I mean, I don't know about you.
- 19:53Speaker 2: Lance.
- 19:54Speaker 4: We both spent time in Texas. We both spent time
- 19:56Speaker 4: in the American League. I never had any type of
- 19:58Speaker 4: an issue there.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Uh.
- 20:00Speaker 4: And I pitched against Okloum when they were really good
- 20:02Speaker 4: and when they weren't really good. I think for the
- 20:05Speaker 4: most part, you've got fans who understand when they stand
- 20:08Speaker 4: in the corridor and every person walking past them is
- 20:11Speaker 4: much bigger than them, they tend to kind of not
- 20:16Speaker 4: get too rowdy, and I think just respect wins in
- 20:20Speaker 4: that situation. I don't think, you know, nobody wants to
- 20:22Speaker 4: have the security guardill on Adam and kicking him out
- 20:24Speaker 4: and saying you can't come back.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Sometimes twelve beers gives people a lot of courage. Lands
- 20:32Speaker 1: Did you ever see anything walking down that little corridor?
- 20:36Speaker 3: No, I never had any issues there. Everybody was they
- 20:39Speaker 3: when I was walking through, they were out of my way.
- 20:41Speaker 3: So yeah, I wasn't worried about anybody.
- 20:45Speaker 5: No one.
- 20:45Speaker 3: No one popped off, even the dugout. I mean they're
- 20:47Speaker 3: right there, not too far away stuff like that. That
- 20:51Speaker 3: to be honest with you, some of the nicest fans
- 20:54Speaker 3: that that I came across were there, So we never
- 20:58Speaker 3: had any issues there. Had some issues at other ballparks,
- 21:01Speaker 3: but usually your rowdy ones are in the outfield. You know,
- 21:04Speaker 3: they're those they get in for you know, cheaper, and
- 21:08Speaker 3: the beers float a little easier out there. The unrolldy
- 21:11Speaker 3: ones are usually behind home play in the in the
- 21:14Speaker 3: more expensive seats, so they have a little bit more
- 21:20Speaker 3: feel on what to do and what not to do.
- 21:23Speaker 4: Pretty twenty twenty, that was a fun place to play.
- 21:26Speaker 4: I mean, you know, they had a good atmosphere. They've
- 21:28Speaker 4: got the two really big speakers up above both fal poles.
- 21:32Speaker 4: They play loud music. It's got really good bass. The
- 21:35Speaker 4: fans out on the outfield are pretty rowdy, and when
- 21:38Speaker 4: that place has a lot of fans, it was a
- 21:40Speaker 4: fun place to play.
- 21:42Speaker 1: They have some great history with that ball club. The
- 21:45Speaker 1: age old question our pictures really the best athletes on
- 21:50Speaker 1: the field. We're going to tackle that when we come
- 21:52Speaker 1: back from break. You're watching Cardinal Tavor.

- 22:56Speaker 1: Welcome back to Cardinal Territory. I posted someone on Twitter
- 23:00Speaker 1: to cause an uproar. But my wife's brother in law,
- 23:04Speaker 1: she had this picture of him in little league. Okay,
- 23:07Speaker 1: and you know this is from literally fifty years ago.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Nice little team. That's her dad in the upper corner,
- 23:14Speaker 1: upper right hand corner. He was a coach, and that's
- 23:17Speaker 1: my brother in law next to him, and they're all
- 23:19Speaker 1: wearing jeans. And it just it may me feel nostalgic
- 23:22Speaker 1: from a time where in baseball you played little league,
- 23:25Speaker 1: they give you a hat, they give you a T shirt,
- 23:28Speaker 1: you bought your jeans at Sears, and you went out
- 23:31Speaker 1: and you played, and there was some blowback. Oh we
- 23:34Speaker 1: never there was always baseball pants. I know, you guys
- 23:38Speaker 1: were from day one probably identified as elite athletes with
- 23:43Speaker 1: potential to play college, major league. Did you ever have
- 23:47Speaker 1: to play baseball in blue jeans?
- 23:50Speaker 3: Kyle?
- 23:52Speaker 4: I don't know that I ever played in blue jeans.
- 23:54Speaker 4: I'd have to think back. You know, maybe team you
- 23:58Speaker 4: first coaches pitch. Yeah, I mean, but my dad was
- 24:01Speaker 4: you know, he played baseball, and he was a coach
- 24:03Speaker 4: that always wore baseball pants. So you know, if he
- 24:07Speaker 4: was wearing pants, I was wearing pants. So I mean
- 24:09Speaker 4: there was no like, hey, let's wear sweatpants today, Kyle, Nope, Uh,
- 24:13Speaker 4: it was baseball pants. But I mean to think that
- 24:17Speaker 4: you haven't seen videos of the of the men's league
- 24:20Speaker 4: or little league where they just go out there and
- 24:22Speaker 4: they just playing whatever they had. You know, those jeans
- 24:24Speaker 4: held up too.
- 24:24Speaker 5: They didn't they didn't seem to rips as these baseball pants.
- 24:28Speaker 4: But I really I'm surprised you didn't get as much
- 24:30Speaker 4: blowback from bringing in Sears on that. You know, I'm
- 24:34Speaker 4: guessing I do remember Sears from the Midwest and them
- 24:37Speaker 4: selling clothes. I don't know that some of your followers
- 24:39Speaker 4: even really realized what Sears was and probably thought of
- 24:42Speaker 4: them as a tool shop not as much a clothing store.
- 24:45Speaker 4: But they sold it all.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Yeah, they had tough skin jeans, tough skin Lance. I
- 24:50Speaker 1: guarantee you never wore tough skin jeans. But some of
- 24:53Speaker 1: my followers on the on the social media tend to
- 24:58Speaker 1: tend to be a little older in that demographic. But Lancy,
- 25:02Speaker 1: you never wore jeans out there, right, you were an
- 25:05Speaker 1: elite athlete from day one.
- 25:08Speaker 3: Jim, you're talking about fifty years ago. Kyle and I
- 25:11Speaker 3: are not even forty yet, like you, like, we have
- 25:14Speaker 3: no idea what you're talking about. You're like multiple generations
- 25:18Speaker 3: ahead of it. But the way that I incorporate this
- 25:21Speaker 3: are they wearing their converse like Samlot, Right, So if
- 25:26Speaker 3: that's what they were going for back then, that was
- 25:28Speaker 3: the that was the era that they lived in. You know,
- 25:31Speaker 3: it's like, hey, it's where my well, my chuck Taylor's
- 25:34Speaker 3: and my and my jeans and let's go be benning
- 25:37Speaker 3: the Jet Rodriguez today, you know. So yeah, if they're
- 25:40Speaker 3: doing that, then I'm all for it if that was
- 25:42Speaker 3: the game plan. But yes, nowadays you wear you wear
- 25:46Speaker 3: baseball pants in most most every category. But I will
- 25:51Speaker 3: say this, you said earlier on before we started, that
- 25:53Speaker 3: you don't just get a hat and a T shirt.
- 25:55Speaker 3: I beg to differ. All of my kids have gotten
- 25:59Speaker 3: a shirt and a hat and that's all they get
- 26:01Speaker 3: for a little league. So we went and got some
- 26:03Speaker 3: baseball pants. No jeens in our household on the field.
- 26:07Speaker 3: And I am anti jeens on a golf course too,
- 26:10Speaker 3: and I see that more times than i'd like. So
- 26:13Speaker 3: if you're doing athletic things, I want you to wear
- 26:17Speaker 3: athletic clothes. Is my is my motto.
- 26:20Speaker 2: That's fair. That's now.
- 26:22Speaker 1: I thought the picture though, would would frame this next
- 26:25Speaker 1: question because it's been my experience playing a little baseball
- 26:28Speaker 1: when I was younger, and then seeing how it unfolded
- 26:32Speaker 1: with my kid too. Every kid wants to be a pitcher.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Now it could be the best athlete on the team
- 26:39Speaker 1: who wants to play short. He's gonna end up pitching right,
- 26:42Speaker 1: because usually the kids that are the best athletes that
- 26:45Speaker 1: throw harder, and you want them on the mount. So
- 26:48Speaker 1: it kind of brought me to this because I'm I
- 26:51Speaker 1: have two pictures. I know the answers, but you hear
- 26:54Speaker 1: it all the time, Kyle. Are pitchers in Major League
- 26:58Speaker 1: Baseball the best athlete on the field.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Or is that not the case?
- 27:07Speaker 5: Yes, they're the best athletes on the field for sure.
- 27:10Speaker 1: No, I mean because you're in the club.
- 27:15Speaker 5: I mean, I'm just saying that.
- 27:18Speaker 4: I think it's Baseball is a pretty I mean, I
- 27:21Speaker 4: guess most sports might be pretty unique in this, but like,
- 27:23Speaker 4: there's just a lot of things on the field that
- 27:25Speaker 4: one player can't do that another player can in another position.
- 27:28Speaker 4: And I guess that probably is all sports, but baseball is.
- 27:31Speaker 4: You would think everybody could throw, right, because you have
- 27:33Speaker 4: to write, not everybody on a football field has to throw.
- 27:36Speaker 4: So when Brian Doser comes up and says, oh, I
- 27:38Speaker 4: could definitely hit ninety and then if he actually tried,
- 27:41Speaker 4: he was barely going to hit eighty miles an hour.
- 27:44Speaker 4: There's just certain things that you can't do. Just like
- 27:47Speaker 4: I'm not going to be able to, you know, be
- 27:49Speaker 4: nearly as fast as those guys because of just where
- 27:51Speaker 4: I was at in my career. So no, I would
- 27:54Speaker 4: say pitchers are not the most athletic on the field
- 27:57Speaker 4: because not many people are more athletic than Byron Buckstenter,
- 28:01Speaker 4: Victor Scott.
- 28:01Speaker 5: Or even Brian Doser.
- 28:04Speaker 3: You named the.
- 28:04Speaker 5: Player, right, They're all really athletic.
- 28:06Speaker 4: But it's more difficult to stand still and to pick
- 28:11Speaker 4: your leg up and throw ninety than people give you
- 28:13Speaker 4: credit for.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Lance, you played all the sports when you were younger.
- 28:18Speaker 1: You were a good basketball player. Who knows what else
- 28:22Speaker 1: if that had been your direction, right, because they made
- 28:25Speaker 1: you a non athlete saying you couldn't hit anymore, You
- 28:28Speaker 1: have to focus on this. Would would you consider yourself
- 28:33Speaker 1: in your prime, maybe when you're a little younger, to
- 28:36Speaker 1: be one of the best athletes on the field at
- 28:37Speaker 1: the time.
- 28:39Speaker 3: See, I'm gonna go out and here I'm gonna tell
- 28:41Speaker 3: you this. I was the best baseball player on the
- 28:46Speaker 3: field a lot of my life. I was never the
- 28:49Speaker 3: best athlete on the field. That's true. Baseball is a
- 28:53Speaker 3: sport where you do not have to be the best
- 28:54Speaker 3: athlete to be the best player. And that's you know,
- 28:57Speaker 3: there's really no other hit. When I was growing up,
- 28:59Speaker 3: I could hit a little bit. I went to college,
- 29:02Speaker 3: they said, hey, you're going to pitch only because you
- 29:04Speaker 3: just got drafted. Pissed me right off. But when you're
- 29:07Speaker 3: not allowed to do things, when you're not allowed to
- 29:10Speaker 3: do things and anyone can catch, we weren't allowed to
- 29:13Speaker 3: play basketball anymore, you're not allowed to do anything. So you,
- 29:17Speaker 3: as a pitcher, get taught to be an athletic because
- 29:21Speaker 3: they don't allow you to be an athlete anymore. Hell, Kyle,
- 29:23Speaker 3: remember we got in trouble in spring training because we
- 29:25Speaker 3: wanted to just take ground balls, not on the mount
- 29:28Speaker 3: like hit us some much short shop. You're like, oh,
- 29:29Speaker 3: you can't do that. It's like, well, why don't you
- 29:31Speaker 3: just make me sit there and do nothing all day
- 29:33Speaker 3: and not let me be athletic. And that's the problem
- 29:36Speaker 3: with a lot of things. Kyle and I both played
- 29:38Speaker 3: multiple sports growing up, played multiple positions when we played
- 29:41Speaker 3: baseball until we were into college and then doing all that.
- 29:44Speaker 3: But I will say this, I mean this day and age,
- 29:48Speaker 3: if you're a pitcher only already in high school, you
- 29:50Speaker 3: are not the best athlete on the field. I promise
- 29:52Speaker 3: you that. So no, you cannot say pictures are the
- 29:54Speaker 3: best athletes on the field. If you're PO in high school, sorry,
- 30:00Speaker 3: concentrate on your pitching. Brother, don't think you're athletic.
- 30:04Speaker 5: You better hit the ball really far.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Yeah, that kind of that kind of hits home for
- 30:11Speaker 1: the Hayes family and PO picture only.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Oh, that kind of hurts.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Last thing, since we are on this category, you guys
- 30:18Speaker 1: are both a wealth of knowledge about pitching. So I
- 30:23Speaker 1: want each one of you. I'll start with you, Kyle,
- 30:25Speaker 1: give me one piece of sound advice for someone watching
- 30:29Speaker 1: whose kid is a pitcher who wants to either take
- 30:33Speaker 1: it to the next level or just excel at the
- 30:35Speaker 1: level at which they're playing.
- 30:38Speaker 5: Holy smokes.
- 30:42Speaker 4: Man, I would say, in an age where, first off,
- 30:47Speaker 4: I did play multiple sports, but I stopped after seventh grade.
- 30:49Speaker 5: So I in an age.
- 30:50Speaker 4: Where we're telling everybody to play a bunch of sports,
- 30:53Speaker 4: I'm not exactly the best person to sit here and
- 30:55Speaker 4: advocate for that because I specialized pretty young. Now, I
- 30:59Speaker 4: was actually actually having this conversation with somebody yesterday. One
- 31:02Speaker 4: thing I did my entire youth was I really never
- 31:06Speaker 4: stopped playing baseball, even in basketball season. You know, if
- 31:11Speaker 4: we had fifteen or twenty minutes. You know, we'd go
- 31:12Speaker 4: to the cage, or we'd go play catch. I just
- 31:15Speaker 4: it was just something My dad was a baseball guy,
- 31:17Speaker 4: and you know that kind of leaked into my.
- 31:19Speaker 5: Life and grew that passion for me.
- 31:21Speaker 4: So I will say, throwing to me is like being
- 31:26Speaker 4: a sprinter or in that realm of athleticism where you
- 31:30Speaker 4: would never tell a sprinter go take three months off
- 31:33Speaker 4: from running and then show back up and be ready
- 31:36Speaker 4: to run again. I think throwing is something that you
- 31:39Speaker 4: need to do consistently, and I think your rest period
- 31:43Speaker 4: should look like active rest, where it's a couple of
- 31:45Speaker 4: times a week, even if it's just in the backyard,
- 31:47Speaker 4: just going to throw with their dad, with their mom,
- 31:49Speaker 4: with their siblings. Whatever it is, you got to throw
- 31:52Speaker 4: if you want to get your arm stronger. So I
- 31:56Speaker 4: would say, fine, find a long toss program that you
- 31:58Speaker 4: can get on a couple times week in the off season,
- 32:01Speaker 4: and then figure out find somebody who can help you
- 32:04Speaker 4: scale that back when you need it, build it up
- 32:06Speaker 4: when you need it. But throwing is one of those
- 32:08Speaker 4: things where if you don't do it, it's going to
- 32:11Speaker 4: go away pretty quick.
- 32:14Speaker 2: LS one piece of advice.
- 32:15Speaker 3: You don't use it, you lose it, So keep.
- 32:19Speaker 5: Throwing, saving that for your lands.
- 32:24Speaker 3: Well, we talked about this earlier. You got to throw right.
- 32:27Speaker 3: I think a lot of kids now get on the
- 32:29Speaker 3: mountain or just throw the ball as hard as they can.
- 32:32Speaker 3: I say, the number one thing that I would think about,
- 32:34Speaker 3: the number one thing I'm going to teach my kids
- 32:36Speaker 3: is everyone wants to throw the ball far blah blah blah.
- 32:39Speaker 3: You only go back as far as you can control
- 32:41Speaker 3: where you're throwing it too. So every time you throw something,
- 32:46Speaker 3: you have a purpose with where you're throwing it, and
- 32:48Speaker 3: you have an intent with where you're throwing it. And
- 32:50Speaker 3: then you get to a certain point where that's just
- 32:52Speaker 3: so far as I can go. I can far back
- 32:55Speaker 3: as I can go, controlling where I'm throwing it and
- 32:58Speaker 3: where I can get it there. And then you stay
- 33:00Speaker 3: there and then you build strength there and then you'll
- 33:03Speaker 3: eventually be able to go back further. So I think
- 33:05Speaker 3: that's the way to build arm strength but also build
- 33:08Speaker 3: control at the same time. And you're getting some out
- 33:11Speaker 3: of it if you go back and long toss and
- 33:12Speaker 3: throw the ball as high as you can to get
- 33:14Speaker 3: it where you're going, you're getting nothing out of it,
- 33:16Speaker 3: and you're also creating bad mechanics on you're throwing and
- 33:19Speaker 3: putting yourself in probably situations where you're going to create
- 33:22Speaker 3: not only bad habits, but a chance for injury. So
- 33:26Speaker 3: where you're throwing, and the distance you're throwing, the arc
- 33:30Speaker 3: you're throwing at all matters to building arm strength, especially
- 33:33Speaker 3: for pitchers, but not only outfielders, and all that. At
- 33:37Speaker 3: no point in any time in a game do you
- 33:38Speaker 3: throw a ball straight up in the air. So long
- 33:40Speaker 3: toss where you're throwing the ball straight up in the
- 33:41Speaker 3: air is pointless. It gets you nowhere to it gets
- 33:43Speaker 3: you nowhere. But if you're throwing a ball on the
- 33:45Speaker 3: line where you're trying to throw the ball through people's heads,
- 33:48Speaker 3: that gets carry and that builds arm strength. You want
- 33:51Speaker 3: carrying arm strength. When those go together, then you're in
- 33:53Speaker 3: a good spot.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Sound advice, gentlemen. And as we started showing that this
- 34:00Speaker 1: is a family presentation, and we ended showing that we
- 34:04Speaker 1: are in fact a family presentation, that's going to do
- 34:07Speaker 1: it for this edition of Cardinal Territory. Hopefully you join
- 34:11Speaker 1: us for our next edition. It'll be family oriented and
- 34:14Speaker 1: hopefully it won't suck
