- speaker-0: Welcome to the speaker-1: Часта систер з подкаст. speaker-2: Doesn't speaker-3: Come manual. speaker-4: With a map, so speaker-1: Made a podcast. speaker-5: Thank speaker-1: Thank you for joining us for Just Us Sisters 20th Episode. I'm hosting today and we are walking through a pop culture deep dive, something a little different for us. With me today, I have my oldest sister Susan, my first middle sister Cheryl, and the middle middle sister Shelly. We're gonna start this off by doing a little icebreaker. So I'm gonna ask everybody what smell instantly reminds you of your childhood? speaker-3: Bacon fryin' speaker-2: And I could smell mom's chicken fried steak. Mm. Nothing like that smell. speaker-4: Mine would have to be bubblegum. It definitely takes us back. 'Cause Stacy, I think we were always chewing bubblegum. speaker-1: ⁓ yeah. It lasted longer back then by the way. ⁓ it yeah. Mine was ⁓ bacon as well. Or just breakfast. Which I yeah. Which I do associate bacon with breakfast. So every morning when bacon's cooking too. Just gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling. So hey, what snack do you wish would come back? I speaker-3: Dan. speaker-2: Miss those wax field juice. Juice. Candy cigarette. Without the nicotine. speaker-1: And I don't ⁓ speaker-3: Yeah. Hey, what were those peanut butter things called that Pop used to have all the time? They were Log Cabins. What? Log cabins? speaker-4: Yeah. speaker-1: White and brown spikes, uh-huh. speaker-3: ⁓ those are so good. speaker-4: Mine was ⁓ push pops. ⁓ yes, we had frozen yogurt out of toilet rolls. speaker-1: Yeah. Those were good. Mine is different. I love little Debbie snacks, but today's little Debbie snacks are not like the little Debbie snacks that we ate. You get like a greasy film on your mouth now. speaker-2: Yeah. That's all those chemicals in in that little Debbie's now. speaker-4: Yeah. speaker-1: Ugh. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I I liked ding dongs, but mom never bought ding dongs. No. Yeah. No ding dongs or twinkies. speaker-3: Got him at speaker-4: In a trade. speaker-5: Yeah. speaker-1: A sandwich for a team. speaker-3: No. Save it up. speaker-1: There you go. There you go. All the cool kids had ding dong, so so speaker-2: Kids. speaker-4: The generic was that's what we might have had. speaker-1: Little Debbies. That was my kids too. I brought them up on Little Debbies. They didn't have the expensive things. So I liked snowballs too though. Y'all remember those? Yeah. speaker-4: It's not speaker-2: Were they those pink things? speaker-4: No, coconut. Ooh. speaker-3: Like coconut too. Yeah. speaker-1: Yeah, I liked ⁓ I I liked those. Anyways. So ev all our smells and yeah, were food, by the way. speaker-2: We are Ralph girls. speaker-1: Th somebody might have said fresh cut grass or leaves from raking or speaker-4: I would say if the shoe fits, but if the pants don't fit then speaker-1: That's that's a play to indicator. Yep. Were the seventies or eighties the best decade? And that and it may be different for us because Susan and Cheryl, y'all grew up in more of the seventies and Shelley and I were more of the eighties. I speaker-3: The seventies. I don't even remember the eighties. They were a blur. I just was giving birth to kids and raising kids. So we're speaker-1: That was my ninety. speaker-2: Fine. Seventies for sure. The best music, food sport. speaker-1: Yeah. Shelley? speaker-4: Say I thought you meant the both of ⁓ I would as much as I thoroughly enjoyed the seventies and the eighties, I wouldn't necessarily call it the best other than the music, by the way. It was a time to be carefree with little responsibility and just simpler times. But to me each decade just gets better. speaker-1: Yeah, yeah, that's good. And the music, yeah, but doesn't music take you back? Yes. And the song takes you back. So here's a great question. What toy defined your childhood? Rollers. Rollers? Y'all remember the knockers? Yeah. And if you get a wrong woman, get a black woman. Yeah. speaker-3: Need anyone. ⁓ yeah. speaker-2: I said anything with a ball and my G.I. Joe. speaker-1: Yeah, your G. I. Joe was big. I had to speaker-2: ⁓ have the G.I. Joe because all my friends wanted the Barbies. So I volunteered to have the G.I. Joe. speaker-1: I loved playing with Barbies. I think I played with them 'cause I was in sixth grade. Little people and Barbies. speaker-4: Little people. Yeah. Yeah. Mine was also little jacks. I love jacks. One Z, two Z, three Zs, around the world. speaker-1: You kids still play with jacks? speaker-4: Yeah. speaker-3: No, nor do they do hopscotch. And that was so much fun. speaker-2: Yeah. It wasn't fun to step on the jack ⁓ if you left one out accidentally. speaker-4: Yeah. speaker-1: Our poor parents. How did they make it, you know? speaker-3: I don't know. No. No telling. But y'all, don't you remember also ping pong in the garage? Many hours of ping pong. speaker-1: ⁓ yeah. speaker-2: ⁓ yeah. speaker-1: ⁓ Yeah, I like and pull at the ranch. What TV show would kids today never understand? ⁓ I was thinking the same thing, Cheryl. That's the exact same thing. speaker-3: Yeah, pool. Next week speaker-2: all in the family. It was a good one though. The Jefferson speaker-1: The Jeffersons, all all in the family, the Jeffersons, and then JJ. Good times. That was a good one too. speaker-4: Good time. speaker-3: I'm going back a little bit further. speaker-1: ⁓ you don't think kids would understand that? Because they're still Eddie Haskell's speaker-3: There was always an Eddie Haskell, but you don't see kids working a you know, and moms staying at home, a lot of moms staying at home. I mean it takes two to make a living these days, so speaker-1: Yeah, that's true. speaker-4: this maybe one or two episodes, but it it was called Alf and it was an alien living with a family. And I just think that that concept would just be so foreign now. Apparently it was really popular. speaker-1: Yeah. It wasn't fore then, but it would be today. speaker-5: Ha ha ha. speaker-4: Well that was also at the time of Mork and Mindy. And at least he was human. speaker-3: Yeah, more can speaker-2: What did they do with their hands? Manu or something? No, it was this. Nanu Manu. speaker-4: Nano, Nano, Nano. speaker-1: I can get speaker-3: My fingers like that anymore. speaker-4: Was it? speaker-2: Mm-hmm. speaker-1: It was nano nano yeah. They're all crooked. It was. Hey, here's a good one. What fashion trend do you think should stay in the past? Really? I know. speaker-3: And many skirt. Like what many, many. speaker-4: Micro mini. I put low rise bell bottoms. speaker-2: I hated bell bottoms. ⁓ I love speaker-3: Well and ⁓ speaker-4: No, bell bottoms are fine, but when the rise is only this much, you're right above the private area. speaker-5: Hey. speaker-1: Yeah, that area. Every time you sit down, mine's MC Hammer Pants. Y'all remember those? speaker-4: is definitely showing. speaker-2: ⁓ yeah. You could hear ch walking down the hall. We've sneak up on anybody. speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah. And but you could probably carry a lot of food into the movie theater with those MCM events on. I mean a lot of food. Which discontinued product deserves a comeback? This one was hard. speaker-2: think those knockers need to come back. Those kids today, they need to experience what it felt like to get those bruises. speaker-1: Yeah. The knockers or remember that lemon thing that you put around your goal and skip to Yeah, those aren't around. All those things that keep the kids active, they're gone. speaker-4: You jumped. And it's speaker-2: with their coordination too. speaker-1: Sea stars, yeah. speaker-3: He saws. Y how many times did someone jump off the other end and you go flying down? ⁓ speaker-1: Yeah. But that was always the goal. Yeah. speaker-2: And you never knew when it was gonna happen. speaker-3: You just speaker-1: And they were metal and hot in the summer. speaker-2: Like and we wonder why we have back issues too. speaker-5: Yeah. speaker-4: Mine is ⁓ the viewmaster with all those different reels. Yeah. speaker-2: ⁓ yeah, you're speaker-1: ⁓ yeah. You could look at you could go on a trip with one of those without going. Kinda. It was that was the first virtual type speaker-4: Yeah, I mean it some of those looked really cool. speaker-3: Did they look speaker-1: Three. speaker-4: Real. speaker-1: What was better before smartphones? Dinner. Agree. That's that's a big dinner. Dinner. Sitting at sitting at the table and speaker-2: got the question wrong. I I was gonna say Polaroid camera. ⁓ You take the picture and and you'd shake it out and you look and it's still white and you'd shake it out more. Yeah. Yeah, blow on it. Didn't really speaker-1: Blow on it. speaker-4: I said etch a sketch. speaker-2: ⁓ that's funny. speaker-4: If that's what you were leaning toward, I would have to just say conversation. speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah. ⁓ yeah. Yeah. I think I used to worry about the younger generation and not being able to hold a conversation because they're always texting. Now I worry about even our generation. Yeah. Because everybody prefers a text over a phone call. And I kind of think it's selfish too. But I do the same thing sometimes. So I think I'm calling myself out as well. So what childhood myth? speaker-2: Okay, I was gonna say. speaker-1: Did you believe speaker-2: Talking about this the other day, ⁓ waiting thirty minutes after you eat to go swimming because you might drown f getting the bins. speaker-4: Santa Claus for way too long. But next week our listeners will have a better understanding as to why that is. But honestly, I think I was probably closing in on eight or nine years old. speaker-1: K C has you beat on that one, by the way. He was thirteen. speaker-2: He probably kicked their butt. speaker-1: Big daddy got bites over it. There is a Santa Claus. speaker-3: Okay, so Shelly, if yours they'll have a better understanding of mine next week too, because mine is snipe hunting. ⁓ speaker-4: Not speaker-2: I remember that. speaker-3: We'll go more into that next week. speaker-4: ⁓ speaker-1: ⁓ yeah. Mine was always falling for and heck they may be true, I don't know, but always falling for those a a woman killed her family here and now it's haunted. And if you go at a certain time, you'll hear the kids screaming or something like that. And we'd always drive out there and remember that, Shelley? Yeah. So and it was scary 'cause I never heard the noises. Now let's get into pop culture a little bit. What's your hottest pop culture take? I speaker-4: I had to look up what that meant, but so close to being over the Taylor Swift, Travis Kelsey just bombardment and then then they went and got married. And I'm just like, over it. Let's be done with that. speaker-2: Me too. And I were speaker-1: But I'm glad they got married. Yeah. And celebrated it however they wanted to. So let's hope it lasts. Anybody else have artist pop culture tape? speaker-4: I was curious to see what Susan's was gonna be because she is not into pop culture at all. speaker-3: I looked it up too and I went, still don't have an answer. My speaker-2: My answer was music. I don't know if that fits or not, does it? speaker-1: Yeah, it could be like vanilla ice and ice iced baby. speaker-2: Well, I like di I mean like disco in classic rock culture. I don't think I got it right. speaker-1: ⁓ yeah. I don't know if there is a completely right. Everybody probably has a different idea of what it is too. Which movie is overrated? I can go first if y'all want. Sure. You know the Lord of the Rings, that series of movies? They have like the Hobbits and speaker-4: Okay. ⁓ speaker-1: I went to sleep and woke up the next morning and it was still playing. So it's like, yeah, but I who who can stay up that long to watch a movie? The Avatar movie? Shelley probably loves that one too. speaker-4: We did. speaker-1: It's okay. Were any of y'all ever into like Star Wars or Star Trek? speaker-4: Because of my husband, absolutely. Not Star Trek. We probably watched some of the more recent ones. I never watched any of the old ones, but Star Wars, yeah. We definitely watch those. Yeah. I'm going to get a lot of pushback on this because it is definitely a cult favorite, but pulp fiction. I just I guess I didn't get it. I didn't speaker-1: Yeah, I guess. speaker-3: It's send yes. speaker-4: get the appeal, but they have like pulp fiction everything and I just never got it. speaker-3: Thinking like mission impossible. speaker-1: I mean, those were tough to ⁓ yeah. ⁓ speaker-3: have a hard time believing some of that. speaker-2: But speaker-4: Anyway, we're none of us are going to the movie together. speaker-2: Hey, I thought we were going tomorrow to you in Washington. speaker-1: Yeah. So Casey and I have been to four or five movies in the thirty six years we've been married. We watch ⁓ on T V but I'm not a theater person. speaker-2: Wow. Put Jaws is overrated. speaker-1: I loved John. speaker-3: Joss. speaker-2: Have you ever watched it recently? speaker-1: Yeah, it's still scary. speaker-3: The newest one speaker-2: That's the most unreal to ⁓ the ma speaker-3: Well, do y'all remember dad taking us to see it right before we went to Padre Island for vacation? speaker-2: I was petrified. speaker-4: I love the trend of people having it while they're in the water, it's on a huge screen. I mean they may be in a river, but it still freaks people out. speaker-2: You could be in a swimming pool and they freak you out. speaker-1: Yeah, that's true. I agree with that. ⁓ that surprises me though. I liked it. Still watch it sometimes. No, and when you get into Jaws four hundred and seventy two, ⁓ it gets a little cheesier there. What is the greatest TV show of all time? Dallas. Dallas. That was a big one. speaker-3: liked it only because I don't know, that's my own opinion, 'cause we lived in Texas. Yeah. And it you know, it had that Texas flair and so speaker-2: It's a mash. speaker-4: Really? speaker-3: ⁓ speaker-2: Yeah. Shelly, yours was MASH. speaker-4: Yes. I didn't watch it when it was on, but probably within the last five years I watched from start to finish and I absolutely loved it. speaker-3: We love to mash too. Yeah. speaker-1: Yeah. I liked Seinfeld. Yeah. I really liked it. I don't know why. I was married and had kids. It was not my li it came out about the same time, friends, I think. ⁓ yeah. And and that Thursday night ⁓ it was. You what it speaker-4: Lineup was awesome. What about you, friends, and Seinfeld? speaker-1: And then ⁓ then you went into ER, right? speaker-2: ⁓ yeah. Got serious. speaker-3: PR. Yeah. speaker-4: I did watch ER very, very long. Some the last ones I hung out on were Law and Order SBU and C S I and then ⁓ also NCIS. I like those. Yep. Enjoyed those, but I don't watch network shows anymore. speaker-3: Yeah. speaker-1: Which C S. I? The Las Vegas or the Florida? The Okay. I liked the Florida one. It was brighter. The Las Vegas speaker-4: Las Vegas, the original. speaker-3: Hawaii or the Los Angeles or the New York City. speaker-1: Did they have all of them? speaker-3: Have a bunch. speaker-2: I used to like Hawaii Fiber. Was that like that? speaker-3: ⁓ yeah. speaker-1: Yeah. speaker-4: Well, are you talking about the original? Yes. Because there is a Hawaii five O. A handsome guy's name, Dan O'Mar. speaker-2: I know. But I'm talking about One was Dano and the other one was man, we're not on our game today. speaker-1: Which celebrity would you invite to dinner? speaker-4: is John Wayne. I just think that he would be so interesting to sit down and talk to just with his length in Hollywood and the ⁓ wide array of movies and such that he did. speaker-1: Does he remind you of Pop? Yes. He reminds me of Pop. Yeah. Yeah. That's ⁓ Clint Eastwood. Yeah. He reminds me of Dad. Yeah. speaker-2: John Wang, yeah. speaker-3: Yeah. He does. speaker-2: John Travolta, I think he he I would l enjoy hanging out with him. speaker-3: I'd also like Sean Comery. speaker-1: ⁓ yeah. Yeah. What is your favorite one hit wonder? Is that a one hit wonder? speaker-2: Funkin' music what Monkey ⁓ yeah. Monkey music. Monkey. It was a one hit wonder. A wild cherry or somebody like that. speaker-3: You know what mine was? What? Okay, as far as funky music was, mine's all the way this way. ⁓ speaker-2: Yeah. speaker-1: ⁓ one hit wonder. Yeah. speaker-3: Debbie Boone. Debbie Boone. speaker-1: I used to play that on the piano. I could still play it on the piano. Yes. Yes. speaker-2: Yeah. You played the speaker-3: Piano? speaker-1: I took years and years and years of piano lessons. I speaker-2: Plays the guitar now. speaker-5: You speaker-4: I have four. Four? ⁓ Mickey, you're so fine. You're so fine. You blow my money. Hey, By Tony Basil. Safety Dance. ⁓ S S S A A A A F F ⁓ Rainin' Then. ⁓ It's Raining Then. By the Weather Girls. my gosh 8675309. speaker-1: I mean Yeah, fair. Well seven one three. ⁓ speaker-4: Mine Yes, Tommy Tutone. speaker-2: Yep. ⁓ yeah. He probably didn't have anything going after the speaker-4: The safety dance was men without hats. speaker-1: Mm. Maybe they needed more safety then. Or hats. Or hats, yeah. What trend needs to disappear? ⁓ With the hammer holder. speaker-3: jean Yeah. It all these people that aren't carpenters wear ⁓ Like women and girls wear speaker-2: Where are they gonna put all that stuff? I wouldn't even wear that and I'm I'd wear pretty much anything. speaker-1: Love to have cute pair of coveralls to wear, like dad used to wear when he was part of Coltec. speaker-3: I used to wear overalls all the time in in the seventies. Those were real speaker-1: There you go, you had a place to put your hammer. speaker-3: Yep, I sure did. speaker-4: Mine is TikTok antics that are dangerous or make fun of other people. There that's a trend going around and ⁓ I just you know, when kids are actively trying to either make fun of people or put themselves in dangerous situations because they've seen it on TikTok. ⁓ it's just not cool. speaker-1: Yeah. speaker-2: Yeah, I think bullying probably ⁓ goes along with what Shelley said. It's I think it's to be cool to bully people. And I think it's just needs to go away. speaker-1: Yeah. I think it's Mine go along with Shelley's on these TikTok videos. Get ready with me and they're talking and putting makeup on. I don't want to watch you get ready. I don't care where you're going. I don't want you to get ready. ⁓ speaker-5: I was like... speaker-1: ⁓ Susan. And then when people eat and talk on their TikToks as well, ⁓ that drives me crazy. There'll be speaker-2: Yeah. And I'm Crunching makes me crazy. ⁓ speaker-1: Chloe said that they have to make a noise to keep attention. So they'll do their fingers or you know, something that that's an attention grabber. Really? I I don't understand it though. What song instantly transports you to another time in your life? In country. Yeah. Older country. speaker-3: Anything country. Yeah, old like Dolly Pardon. speaker-2: Anything that's classic rock, Boston, Eagles, R Yo Speedwagon, A C D C, Z Z Top, any of those. speaker-4: In the eighties makes me smile, but the song Totally Clips of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler takes me back to a high school gym dance. ⁓ I asked my crush to dance with me and he said yes. And every time I hear that song, I go back to that dance. speaker-1: Justin. ⁓ speaker-2: Who was just first name. speaker-1: I remember. No, I 'cause Shelley loved that song. That was a good one. ⁓ mine is any songs from the eighties as well. I just and then Old Country. Anytime old country plays, it just takes me I could sit and listen to it or stand or work while it's playing for a long time. But now those eighties songs are Johnny Johnny Cash, ⁓ Wayne and Juan. Johnny Paycheck. Does he not remind you of Gran? She loved Johnny Paycheck. speaker-3: Willie Nelson. Yeah. speaker-2: Yeah. speaker-1: So she probably s saw him at the rodeo a lot and then ⁓ yeah. I like him. So okay. Are y'all ready for rapid fire, the closing round? Okay. One thing you're obsessed with this week. speaker-3: Temperature pre speaker-2: I'm speaker-4: I am still obsessed with watching the videos of the foreigners that are just discovering the real America, not what their their media told them. And just I mean, I can really lose time watching those because it's so much fun. I get a pride in my just spirit of our country and I I I have thoroughly enjoyed that. speaker-1: I'm with you, Shelley, on that. I'm still loving watching it. I love how excited they are to have been here for July 4th and to see how we celebrate July 4th. And yeah, I'm with you. And I'm also obsessed right now with all the ways you can cook Brussels sprouts and sweet potatoes. That all sounds really yummy to me. One thing everyone else loves, but you don't. speaker-2: Look. Mm mind shopping. I don't like to shop. speaker-1: Not even online, Cheryl? Okay. speaker-2: No. I mean I well do it. If I need a bra I'm gonna go online. speaker-1: You're gonna go to Dollar General and get speaker-5: You're a- speaker-2: I I gotta go a little higher than Dollar General for my bras and my underwear. speaker-4: Mine's Will Farrell. speaker-1: ⁓ yeah. ⁓ speaker-2: Yeah. speaker-3: It's okay. I just don't love speaker-4: them. As an actor. I don't know him as a person, but I just everyone knows his movies and I just do not speaker-1: Yeah. Susan, did you think of anything? speaker-3: to think every I'll I'll answer at the end. Yeah, so speaker-1: I'm not a big game person. All my daughter in laws love games and I'll play ⁓ Yeah. I'll speaker-3: Noah tried to teach us Texas. Hold on. Hold up. Yes. Never caught on. speaker-4: Cheryl and I love games. speaker-1: Yeah. At Port A we played that game where you have your phone and you have a speaker-2: ⁓ that's fun. It was great. speaker-1: No. It's like charades almost. But it the kids can even play. That's why it was fun. They were having so much fun. Okay. One thing that deserves a comeback. I love that. I I would do that today. Yeah. Yeah. speaker-3: Fair Fawcett hairstyle. speaker-4: What'd you say, Sheryl? speaker-2: I said the Pixie ⁓ Daisy, you rocked it. speaker-1: Pick I did have a pixie cut. It was not on purpose. I don't know how or why I got that cut. speaker-2: Put the bowl on it and speaker-1: No, she took she would take us up to the to the schools, cosmetology. That's right. speaker-2: Y'all got to do that. Yeah. speaker-4: But a pig cut is like this much hair, not like our Dorothy Ham. speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah, ours was like a camel. Yeah. But very short. It was speaker-2: Yeah, Shelly, what do you think deserves a comeback? No, we'll wait. speaker-4: No idea. ⁓ speaker-3: Then speaker-1: What is one movie you'll defend forever? ⁓ I love Brave Heart. ⁓ that's a good one too. speaker-3: Brave heart. ⁓ speaker-2: Radio speaker-4: Mission impossible. No, I'm just kidding. speaker-5: You speaker-2: I don't know. speaker-4: I have two. I'd never watch movies twice, but if Top Gun or Dirty Dancing comes on, I will watch. speaker-1: I'm like that too. Mine I have three, but I never can remember the name of the third one. One is Tubstone. ⁓ one is Roadhouse. The new the old Roadhouse with that. That's what I can't remember. So I have two. ⁓ what's one T V character you would want as your best friend? speaker-4: I knew that was one. Patrick Swayzer. speaker-3: Dolly Pardon. She's been in lots of different shows. speaker-1: It doesn't matter what she's in, you just want her as you like. speaker-2: Maurice Bernard, he plays Sonny on General Hospital. speaker-1: We need to get you on general hospital, Cheryl. speaker-2: He is a great person. I mean, he cares about people in real life. Whoop tight on Instagram. speaker-1: You like all of his Instagram posts? speaker-2: Mm-hmm. He helps people that have manic depressants and bipolar. He's he helps a lot of people. speaker-1: What about his character on T V? Would he be would that be your best friend? No. As a person. As a person. Okay. What about you, Shelley? ⁓ speaker-2: No him as a person. speaker-4: was going off characters and I think it was ⁓ Kelly on Charlie's Angels. speaker-1: ⁓ yeah. Kelly was a she's tough. I like Phoebe from Friends. I think she would be fun, a lot to keep up with. Yeah. I think I like very strong women roles because it always reminds me that I can be a strong woman. And so anytime there's one of those, I'm like, heck yeah, we'd be good friends. And then last question what is one song you'll never skip? Yeah. speaker-3: Blessing. speaker-2: Make me feel bad, Susan. Sweet home, Alabama. speaker-1: I don't have that one too. How about you, Shelley? ⁓ speaker-4: W way up there. Girls just wanna have fun by Cindy Lauper. speaker-1: That was one of mine too, by the way. That was speaker-4: What none of us would ever skip is we are family. ⁓ speaker-1: We are family. Yeah. That is true. Hey, y'all, share with us some of your pop culture favorites. What is your favorite movie? Who would you be best friends with? And what's a song you can't ever skip? Forget to like us. speaker-2: Share us. speaker-1: And subscribe. Bye. Bye. Okay. speaker-4: Right. speaker-0: So who's gonna make the jump? I wanna see who's gonna make the jump. Who's gonna catch her? Just remember the medical team at war only can treat minor injuries. It's Liz Bowie from Mexico. How old is he, gentlemen? I don't see any catches. he's smoking!
