- 0:12How life friends, it's shown here.
- 0:14It's Wednesday. It's the 26th of June and just
- 0:19when we were starting the book of James, we come to the end of
- 0:23the book of James. It's like we just arrived.
- 0:25We we were not even settled in there.
- 0:27We're still getting off our shoes at the front door.
- 0:29We haven't even, you know, taken off our jackets and already
- 0:32James is wrapping it up. This book is punchy in content
- 0:37and in size. So today we will be finishing it
- 0:41off and then tomorrow, well tomorrow we crack open the
- 0:45Gospel of John. How exciting.
- 0:48I know some of you have told me how much you love John.
- 0:51It may even be your favourite gospel.
- 0:54And I'm not allowed to have favourite children or favourite
- 0:57aunties? No, we're allowed to have
- 0:58favourite aunties, but are we allowed to have favourite
- 1:00gospels? I reckon we are.
- 1:02And that is the beauty of God's word.
- 1:03There are so many different angles, so many different
- 1:06approaches, so many different personalities, all sharing the
- 1:10singular story of God reaching out to his people, us equities
- 1:16that. But we're not there yet.
- 1:18That's tomorrow. Today we will finish off with a
- 1:22couple of warnings and a couple of encouragements as we finish
- 1:26up this book that James writes, encouraging those Christians all
- 1:31around the known world to live in a way that makes a difference
- 1:35in their context with their faith driving that transformed
- 1:39behaviour. So as you and I pray for
- 1:43transformed lives, let us take in this last chapter of
- 1:47instruction so that we can make a difference in our days.
- 1:51That sound like a plan, doesn't it?
- 1:53OHT Yeah, let's do it. Alright, let's read together
- 1:56James chapter 5. Look here, you rich people weep
- 2:12and groan with anguish because of all the terrible troubles
- 2:16ahead of you. Your wealth is rotting away and
- 2:20your fine clothes are moth eaten rags.
- 2:24Your gold and silver are corroded.
- 2:27The very wealth you were counting on will eat away your
- 2:30flesh like fire. This corroded treasure you have
- 2:34hoarded will testify against you on the day of judgement.
- 2:38For listen, hear the cries of the field workers whom you have
- 2:43cheated of their pay. The cries of those who harvest
- 2:47your fields have reached the ears of the Lord of Heaven's
- 2:50armies. You have spent your years on
- 2:53earth and luxury satisfying your every desire.
- 2:58You have fattened yourselves for the day of slaughter.
- 3:01You have condemned and killed innocent people who do not
- 3:05resist you. Dear brothers and sisters, be
- 3:10patient as you wait for the Lord's return.
- 3:14Consider the farmers who patiently wait for the rains and
- 3:17the fall, and in the spring they eagerly look for the valuable
- 3:22harvest to ripen. You too must be patient.
- 3:26Take courage, for the coming of the Lord is near.
- 3:30Don't crumble about each other, brothers and sisters, are you
- 3:34will be judged for look, the judge is standing at the door
- 3:39for examples of patience and suffering.
- 3:42Dear brothers and sisters, look at the prophets who spoke in the
- 3:46name of the Lord. We give great honour to those
- 3:50who endure under suffering. For instance, you know about
- 3:54Job, a man of great endurance who can see how the Lord was
- 3:59kind to him at the end. For the Lord is full of
- 4:03tenderness and mercy. But most of all, my brothers and
- 4:07sisters never take an oath by heaven or earth or anything
- 4:11else. Just say a simple yes or no so
- 4:16that you will not sin and be condemned.
- 4:20Are any of you suffering hardships?
- 4:22You should pray. Are any of you happy?
- 4:26You should sing praises how any of you sick?
- 4:30You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray
- 4:33over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord.
- 4:37Such a prayer, offered in faith will heal the sick and the Lord
- 4:41will make you well. If you have committed any sins,
- 4:45you will be forgiven. Confess your sins to each other
- 4:50and pray for each other so that you may be healed.
- 4:54The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power
- 4:58and produces wonderful results. Elijah was as human as we are,
- 5:05and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none
- 5:09fell for 3 1/2 years. Then when he prayed again, the
- 5:15sky sent down rain and the earth began to yield its crops.
- 5:20My dear brothers and sisters, if someone among you wanders away
- 5:25from the truth and is brought back, you can be sure that
- 5:28whoever brings the Sinner back from wandering will save that
- 5:32person from death and bring about the forgiveness of many
- 5:37sins. Jesus, thank you for this
- 5:50encouragement from James. This encouragement that urges us
- 5:54to include you in every part of our lives when we are suffering.
- 6:01That we can know that you build up our character through that
- 6:04journey when we are sick. That you encourage us to pray.
- 6:10That when we are going through difficult times we should invite
- 6:14you in. That when we are happy, we
- 6:16should sing your songs of praise.
- 6:20Well, it's tempting when we read this chapter has many have done
- 6:24to see these words as an equation that F we do AB and C
- 6:29that you are obliged to follow through in this prescriptive
- 6:33way. But Lord, this encouragement is
- 6:36so much bigger than that, to invite you in at every moment.
- 6:42You, the creative, dynamic God of the universe, and we don't
- 6:49even understand the enormity of the canvas on which you paint
- 6:55the story of our lives and the way that you interact with us.
- 7:00So we just offer ourselves to you.
- 7:03We offer our deepest desires, our greatest joys, and our most
- 7:07nagging hurts, and we pray that we would continually be mindful
- 7:15that you are here and that we would invite you in to journey
- 7:20day by day with us through these highs and lows.
- 7:24You are glorious. You are wonderful.
- 7:28You are so far beyond our ability to even comprehend, so
- 7:33we submit to you, Your Lordship and your will, and thank you
- 7:38that even as great as you are, you still want to be a part of
- 7:42our story. So come Holy Spirit, come Lord
- 7:46Jesus, come our Father, three in one, we are yours, and we pray
- 7:52all of this in your name, Jesus. Ah, man.
