1:12
Eric
1:12
is
1:12
down
1:13
at
1:13
Design
1:13
and
1:13
Construction
1:14
Week
1:14
checking
1:15
out
1:15
the

latest

in
1:15
new
1:16

1:16

1:17
he
1:18
will
1:18
be
1:18
back
1:18
next
1:18
week.
1:19
Today
1:20
we
1:20
are
1:20
jumping
1:20
back
1:21
into
1:21
the
1:21
catalog
1:22
to
1:22
discuss
1:22
how
1:23
to
1:23
remodel
1:23
or
1:24
build
1:24
that
1:24
new
1:24
home.
1:25
To
1:25
handle
1:26
today's
1:26
bad
1:26
weather,
1:27
we
1:27
have
1:28
Fred
1:28
Malik,
1:29
managing
1:29
director
1:30
of
1:30
Fortified
1:31
for
1:31
the
1:31
Insurance
1:31
Institute
1:32
for
1:32
Business
1:33
and
1:33
Home
1:33
Safety.
1:34
Now
1:34
let's
1:35
get
1:35
to
1:35
it.
1:35
Welcome
1:36
to
1:36
the
1:36
Round
1:36
the
1:36
House
1:36
show.
1:37
This
1:37
is
1:37
where
1:37
we
1:37
help
1:37
you
1:38
get
1:38
the
1:38
most
1:38
out
1:38
of
1:38
your
1:39
home
1:39
through
1:39
information
1:40
and
1:40
education.
1:40
Thanks
1:41
for
1:41
joining
1:41
us
1:41
today.
1:42
This
1:42
is
1:43
probably
1:43
going
1:43
to
1:43
be
1:44
one
1:44
of
1:44
our
1:44
most
1:44
important
1:45
episodes
1:46
of
1:46
the
1:46
year
1:47
as
1:47
far
1:47
as
1:47
I'm
1:47
concerned
1:48
because
1:49
our
1:49
weather
1:49
has
1:50
been
1:50
crazy.
1:50
I
1:50
don't
1:51
care
1:51
where
1:51
you're
1:51
located
1:52
in
1:52
the
1:52
US
1:52
one
1:52
day
1:53
it
1:53
seems
1:53
like
1:53
you've
1:54
got
1:54
60
1:55
degrees
1:55
in
1:55
the
1:55
winter
1:56
time
1:56
and
1:56
the
1:56
next
1:56
day
1:56
it's
1:57
18
1:57
and
1:57
snowing.
1:58
And
1:59
it
1:59
is
1:59
doing
2:00
some
2:00
damage
2:00
to
2:01
our
2:01
homes
2:01
that
2:01
I'm
2:01
still
2:02
picking
2:02
up
2:02
around
2:02
my
2:02
place.
2:03
From
2:03
the
2:03
last
2:03
one
2:04
we
2:04
have
2:04
Fred
2:05
Malik
2:05
from
2:05
the
2:06
Insurance
2:06
Institute
2:06
for
2:07
Business
2:07
and
2:07
Home
2:07
Safety.
2:09
But
2:09
they've
2:09
got
2:09
this
2:10
amazing
2:10
program
2:11
called
2:11
Fortified
2:12
Home.
2:12
Welcome
2:13
to
2:13
around
2:13
the
2:13
House,
2:14
Brother.
2:14
Hey,
2:14
Eric,
2:15
thanks
2:15
man.
2:15
Appreciate
2:16
it,
2:17
man.
2:17
I
2:17
love
2:18
what
2:18
you
2:18
guys
2:18
are
2:18
doing.
2:19
And
2:19
me
2:19
being
2:19
a
2:20
Pacific
2:20
Northwest
2:21
native,
2:22
I'm
2:22
as
2:22
good
2:22
as
2:23
the
2:23
bubble
2:23
I'm
2:23
in.
2:24
And
2:24
when
2:24
I
2:25
was
2:25
out
2:25
in
2:25
Florida
2:26
at
2:26
the
2:27
Southeastern
2:28
building
2:28
conference
2:29
down
2:29
there,
2:29
I
2:30
was
2:30
shocked
2:31
to
2:31
really
2:31
dive
2:32
in
2:32
and
2:32
understand
2:33
what
2:34
Gulf
2:35
states
2:35
and
2:35
those
2:35
guys
2:35
are
2:36
doing
2:36
down
2:36
there
2:36
to
2:37
build
2:37
for
2:37
weather.
2:38
And
2:38
it's
2:38
something
2:39
I
2:39
know
2:39
in
2:39
the
2:39
Pacific
2:39
Northwest
2:40
we
2:40
got
2:40
to
2:40
do
2:40
a
2:40
lot
2:41
better
2:41
of.
2:42
Yeah,
2:42
you
2:43
guys
2:43
have
2:43
had
2:43
the
2:43
atmospheric
2:44
river
2:44
out
2:44
there
2:45
this,
2:45
this
2:45
whole
2:45
week.
2:46
Strong
2:46
winds,
2:47
torrential
2:47
rains.
2:48
I
2:48
bet
2:48
you
2:49
that's
2:49
opening
2:49
a
2:49
few
2:49
people's
2:50
eyes
2:50
that
2:51
hey,
2:51
maybe
2:51
we've
2:51
got
2:51
to
2:51
pay
2:51
attention
2:52
to
2:52
this
2:52
stuff
2:52
just
2:52
like
2:52
some
2:53
of
2:53
these
2:53
other
2:53
folks
2:53
do.
2:55
Yeah.
2:55
In
2:55
the
2:55
month
2:55
of
2:56
January,
2:56
great
2:56
example.
2:57
We
2:57
had
2:57
a
2:58
basically
2:58
a
2:58
frozen
2:59
hurricane
2:59
come
3:00
in
3:00
here
3:00
into
3:00
the
3:00
Pacific
3:00
Northwest.
3:01
We
3:01
had
3:02
couple
3:02
days
3:03
of
3:03
18
3:03
degree
3:03
weather
3:04
which
3:04
is
3:04
super
3:04
cold
3:05
for
3:05
us.
3:06
And
3:06
then
3:06
we
3:06
had
3:07
winds
3:07
coming
3:08
down
3:08
the
3:08
Columbia
3:09
Gorge
3:09
here
3:09
that
3:09
were
3:10
80
3:10
to
3:10
100
3:11
and
3:12
we
3:12
had
3:12
trees
3:12
Coming
3:13
down
3:13
and
3:14
just
3:14
destruction.
3:15
It
3:15
looks
3:15
like
3:15
a
3:16
hurricane
3:16
hit
3:16
in
3:17
some
3:17
neighborhoods.
3:17
Yeah.
3:18
And
3:18
we
3:19
got
3:19
to
3:19
do
3:19
a
3:19
better
3:19
job
3:19
of
3:20
building
3:20
homes
3:20
that
3:20
way.
3:21
Yeah.
3:21
Down
3:21
on
3:22
the
3:22
Gulf
3:22
coast
3:22
and
3:22
up
3:23
through
3:23
the
3:23
hurricane
3:23
prone
3:24
portions
3:24
of
3:25
the
3:25
east
3:25
coast,
3:26
we've
3:26
been
3:27
using
3:27
something
3:28
called
3:28
as
3:28
graduated
3:29
scale
3:29
of
3:30
design
3:30
wind
3:30
speeds
3:30
for
3:31
a
3:31
while
3:31
now,
3:31
which
3:31
helps
3:32
to
3:33
improve
3:33
performance
3:33
by
3:34
up
3:34
leveling
3:35
the.
3:35
Or
3:35
leveling
3:36
up
3:36
the
3:36
components
3:37
and
3:37
cladding
3:37
in
3:38
particular,
3:38
and
3:38
some
3:38
of
3:38
the
3:39
other
3:39
structural
3:39
design
3:40
elements
3:40
of
3:40
the
3:40
house.
3:40
But
3:41
for
3:41
most
3:42
of
3:42
the
3:42
country,
3:42
including
3:43
where
3:43
you
3:43
are
3:43
out
3:44
there
3:44
in
3:44
the
3:44
northwest,
3:45
the
3:45
design
3:45
wind
3:46
speed
3:46
is
3:46
pretty
3:47
flat.
3:47
It's
3:47
115
3:48
under
3:49
the
3:49
most
3:49
current
3:50
version
3:50
of
3:50
the
3:50
building
3:51
codes.
3:51
And
3:52
that
3:52
leaves
3:52
a
3:53
lot
3:53
of
3:53
room
3:53
for
3:53
improvement
3:54
when
3:54
you're
3:54
encountering
3:55
the
3:55
kinds
3:56
of
3:56
conditions
3:57
you
3:57
guys
3:57
are
3:57
seeing
3:58
now.
3:59
Absolutely.
4:00
This
4:01
is
4:01
one
4:01
of
4:01
those
4:01
things
4:02
that
4:02
when
4:02
you.
4:02
It's.
4:03
It
4:03
was
4:03
shocking
4:04
because
4:04
I
4:04
was
4:04
looking
4:04
at
4:05
it
4:05
going
4:05
down
4:05
there,
4:05
looking
4:05
at
4:06
the
4:06
building
4:06
codes,
4:06
because
4:06
we
4:07
were
4:07
building
4:07
up
4:07
those.
4:07
Those
4:08
little
4:08
demonstrations
4:09
down
4:09
there
4:09
and
4:09
I'm
4:09
like,
4:09
wow,
4:10
we're
4:10
tying
4:10
the
4:10
top
4:11
plate
4:11
into
4:12
the
4:12
foundation.
4:14
This
4:14
is
4:14
stuff
4:15
we
4:15
should
4:15
be
4:15
doing
4:15
around
4:15
here.
4:16
Yeah.
4:16
The
4:17
load
4:17
path
4:17
is
4:17
certainly
4:18
an
4:18
important
4:19
feature
4:19
of
4:19
the
4:19
home
4:20
that
4:20
you're
4:20
talking
4:21
about.
4:21
And
4:21
that's
4:21
a
4:21
series
4:22
of
4:22
connections
4:22
that
4:22
ties
4:23
the
4:23
roof
4:23
to
4:23
the
4:23
wall,
4:24
to
4:24
the
4:24
floor
4:24
and
4:24
the
4:24
floor
4:25
into
4:25
the
4:25
foundation
4:26
and
4:26
the
4:26
ground.
4:27
The
4:27
whole
4:27
purpose
4:28
of
4:28
that
4:28
is
4:28
to
4:28
transfer
4:29
all
4:29
those
4:29
load
4:30
can
4:30
be
4:30
applied
4:31
to
4:31
the
4:31
house
4:31
either
4:32
by
4:32
the
4:32
wind
4:32
or
4:33
even
4:33
those
4:33
dead
4:34
loads
4:34
from
4:34
things
4:34
like
4:35
snow
4:35
get
4:36
that
4:36
stuff
4:36
into
4:36
the
4:37
ground.
4:37
That's
4:37
the
4:37
whole
4:38
goal.
4:38
But
4:38
the
4:39
areas
4:39
of
4:39
the
4:39
house
4:39
that
4:40
are
4:40
the
4:40
most
4:40
vulnerable,
4:41
even
4:41
at
4:41
lower
4:42
wind
4:42
speeds,
4:43
are
4:43
things
4:43
like
4:44
the
4:44
roof
4:44
and
4:45
your
4:45
garage
4:46
door,
4:46
believe
4:46
it
4:46
or
4:46
not.
4:47
Yeah.
4:49
Yeah.
4:49
That
4:49
garage
4:50
door
4:50
is
4:50
shocking,
4:50
we
4:51
think
4:51
about
4:51
roof.
4:51
Right.
4:52
You
4:52
know,
4:52
you
4:52
get
4:52
a
4:52
50,
4:53
60
4:53
mile
4:53
an
4:53
hour
4:53
wind
4:54
and
4:54
all
4:54
of
4:54
a
4:54
sudden
4:54
you
4:54
got
4:54
shingles
4:55
in
4:55
the
4:55
driveway.
4:56
But
4:56
I
4:56
think
4:57
people
4:57
really
4:58
don't
4:58
realize
4:59
or
4:59
forget
5:00
that
5:00
is
5:00
one
5:01
big
5:01
sale
5:01
that's
5:02
covering
5:02
their
5:02
garage
5:02
door.
5:03
And
5:03
if
5:03
you've
5:03
got
5:03
that
5:03
budget
5:04
friendly
5:05
steel
5:05
one,
5:06
those
5:06
things
5:06
taco
5:07
in
5:07
pretty
5:07
quickly.
5:08
Yeah.
5:08
And
5:08
the
5:09
unfortunate
5:09
thing
5:09
is
5:10
it's
5:10
maybe
5:10
been
5:11
an
5:11
under
5:11
appreciated
5:12
risk
5:13
that's
5:13
out
5:14
there.
5:14
And
5:14
so
5:15
the
5:16
market
5:16
just
5:16
really
5:17
hasn't
5:17
demanded
5:17
that
5:18
things
5:18
like
5:19
labeling
5:19
and
5:20
lots
5:20
of
5:20
transparency
5:21
about
5:21
design,
5:22
wind
5:22
pressures
5:23
and
5:23
ratings
5:24
for
5:24
the
5:24
garage
5:24
doors
5:25
be
5:25
included.
5:26
Now
5:26
that's
5:26
been
5:27
a
5:27
staple
5:28
in
5:28
hurricane
5:28
prone
5:29
areas
5:29
for
5:29
a
5:29
long
5:30
time,
5:30
especially
5:30
in
5:30
Florida.
5:31
Florida
5:31
really
5:31
brought
5:32
that
5:32
to,
5:32
to,
5:33
to
5:33
the
5:33
country
5:34
after
5:34
hurricane
5:35
Andrew.
5:35
Until
5:36
recently,
5:36
there
5:37
really
5:37
hasn't
5:37
been
5:38
a
5:38
whole
5:38
lot
5:38
of
5:38
transparency
5:39
for
5:39
folks
5:40
that
5:40
are
5:40
building
5:40
away
5:41
from
5:41
the
5:41
coast.
5:41
And
5:41
so
5:42
builders
5:43
like
5:43
you
5:43
and
5:43
me
5:44
maybe
5:44
would
5:45
like
5:45
to
5:45
make
5:45
a
5:45
better
5:45
decision.
5:46
And
5:46
we
5:46
just
5:46
didn't
5:46
know
5:47
what
5:47
we
5:47
didn't
5:47
know,
5:48
which
5:48
is
5:48
crazy.
5:48
But
5:49
now
5:49
that's
5:49
starting
5:50
to
5:50
really
5:50
come
5:50
to
5:50
light.
5:50
And
5:51
we've
5:51
got
5:51
a
5:51
lot
5:51
of
5:51
great
5:51
research
5:52
that
5:52
just
5:52
shows
5:52
how
5:53
important
5:54
that
5:54
garage
5:54
door
5:54
can
5:54
be,
5:55
even
5:55
to
5:56
keeping
5:56
something
5:56
like
5:56
your
5:56
roof
5:57
on.
5:58
Yeah,
5:59
that's.
5:59
You
5:59
got
6:00
me
6:00
thinking
6:00
about
6:00
that
6:00
garage
6:01
door,
6:01
because
6:01
once
6:02
that
6:02
garage
6:02
door
6:03
comes
6:03
in,
6:03
now
6:03
you've
6:04
got
6:04
the,
6:04
the
6:05
lift
6:05
on
6:05
the
6:05
roof
6:05
system.
6:06
And
6:06
so
6:06
all
6:06
of
6:06
a
6:07
sudden
6:07
those
6:08
maybe
6:08
traditional
6:09
hurricane
6:09
rafter
6:10
ties,
6:10
those
6:10
little
6:11
pieces
6:11
of
6:11
sheet
6:11
metal,
6:12
are
6:12
the
6:12
only
6:12
thing
6:13
holding
6:13
the
6:13
roof
6:13
on
6:13
the
6:14
building.
6:14
And
6:14
if
6:15
that's
6:15
an
6:15
attached
6:15
garage,
6:16
once
6:16
you
6:17
open
6:17
that
6:17
up,
6:17
you're
6:18
now
6:18
really
6:19
just
6:20
asking
6:20
for
6:20
issues
6:21
on
6:21
the
6:21
rest
6:21
of
6:21
the
6:21
home
6:22
as
6:22
far
6:22
as
6:22
losing
6:22
a
6:22
roof
6:23
system.
6:23
Yeah.
6:24
Back
6:24
in
6:24
the
6:24
day
6:24
when
6:24
I
6:25
first
6:25
started
6:25
learning
6:25
how
6:25
to
6:25
build
6:26
a
6:26
house,
6:26
I
6:26
was
6:26
building
6:27
in
6:27
Virginia
6:27
and
6:27
we
6:28
used
6:28
to
6:28
put
6:28
those
6:28
little
6:28
things
6:29
called
6:29
hurricane
6:29
clips.
6:30
And
6:30
I
6:30
was,
6:30
I
6:30
was
6:30
well
6:31
away
6:31
from
6:31
the
6:31
coast.
6:32
I,
6:32
as
6:32
a
6:33
new
6:33
guy
6:34
in
6:34
the
6:34
industry,
6:34
I
6:34
was
6:35
like,
6:35
what
6:35
are
6:35
we
6:35
putting
6:35
hurricane
6:36
clips
6:36
on
6:36
for?
6:36
We
6:37
never
6:37
see
6:37
hurricanes
6:37
here.
6:38
Here
6:38
we
6:38
are,
6:38
fast
6:39
forward
6:39
30
6:39
something
6:39
years
6:40
later.
6:40
And
6:40
I
6:40
really
6:41
understand
6:41
and
6:42
appreciate
6:42
the
6:42
value
6:42
of
6:42
those
6:43
things.
6:43
But
6:43
yeah,
6:44
when
6:44
you're
6:44
talking
6:44
about
6:44
the
6:44
garage
6:45
door.
6:45
So
6:46
imagine
6:46
your
6:46
house,
6:46
or
6:47
think
6:47
of
6:47
your
6:47
house
6:48
as
6:48
a
6:49
rigid
6:49
balloon.
6:50
And
6:50
as
6:51
long
6:51
as
6:51
the
6:51
windows
6:52
and
6:52
the
6:52
doors
6:52
and
6:53
all
6:53
those
6:53
features
6:53
stay
6:54
intact,
6:54
the
6:54
air
6:55
pushes
6:56
on
6:56
your
6:56
house,
6:56
it
6:56
moves
6:57
around
6:57
your
6:57
house.
6:57
But
6:58
your
6:58
house
6:58
is
6:58
designed
6:59
to
6:59
take
6:59
that
6:59
load
7:00
in
7:00
those
7:00
places.
7:01
But
7:01
if
7:02
the
7:02
garage
7:02
door
7:03
fails,
7:03
which
7:03
is
7:03
the
7:03
largest
7:04
opening
7:04
in
7:04
the
7:05
house,
7:05
then
7:05
that
7:06
air
7:06
is
7:06
rushing
7:07
into
7:07
that
7:07
rigid
7:07
balloon
7:08
and
7:08
it
7:08
has
7:08
to
7:08
go
7:09
somewhere.
7:09
And
7:09
the
7:09
only
7:10
places
7:10
it
7:10
can
7:10
go
7:10
is
7:11
out
7:11
or
7:12
up.
7:12
And
7:13
the
7:13
out
7:13
or
7:14
up
7:14
is
7:14
when
7:14
you
7:15
start
7:15
to
7:15
see
7:15
things
7:15
like
7:16
wall
7:16
and
7:16
roof
7:16
failure.
7:17
There's
7:18
a
7:18
interesting
7:18
statistic
7:19
that
7:19
just
7:19
really
7:20
puts
7:20
a
7:20
fine
7:20
point
7:20
on
7:21
this,
7:21
that
7:22
in
7:22
places
7:22
like
7:23
Joplin
7:24
Moore,
7:25
or
7:25
even
7:25
in
7:26
Florida
7:27
with
7:27
some
7:27
older
7:27
buildings
7:28
stopped
7:28
during
7:28
hurricane
7:29
Ian,
7:30
if
7:30
you
7:30
had
7:31
a
7:31
garage
7:31
door
7:31
that
7:31
stayed
7:32
intact
7:33
during
7:33
those
7:33
really
7:34
severe
7:34
events,
7:36
90%
7:36
of
7:36
the
7:37
homes
7:37
that
7:37
had
7:37
garage
7:38
doors
7:38
that
7:38
stayed
7:38
intact
7:39
did
7:39
not
7:39
have
7:40
structural
7:40
roof
7:40
damage.
7:41
Wow,
7:42
that's
7:42
crazy,
7:43
isn't
7:43
it?
7:43
If
7:43
you
7:44
basically
7:44
read
7:45
a
7:45
different
7:45
way.
7:46
If
7:46
your
7:46
garage
7:47
door
7:47
was
7:47
damaged,
7:47
you
7:48
were
7:48
very
7:48
likely
7:49
that
7:49
you
7:49
had
7:49
some
7:49
sort
7:50
of
7:50
severe
7:50
structural
7:51
damage
7:51
to
7:51
your
7:52
home.
7:52
That's.
7:53
Wow.
7:54
That's
7:54
the
7:54
kind
7:54
of
7:54
risk
7:54
that
7:55
that
7:55
particular
7:56
component
7:57
of
7:57
your
7:57
house
7:57
can
7:57
either
7:58
prevent
7:58
or
7:59
really
7:59
contribute
8:00
to
8:01
some
8:01
sort
8:01
of
8:01
damage.
8:03
And
8:03
that
8:03
is
8:03
one
8:04
of
8:04
hundreds
8:04
of
8:04
materials
8:05
in
8:05
your
8:05
house
8:05
that
8:05
you're
8:06
depending
8:06
on
8:06
to
8:06
hold
8:07
that
8:07
structure
8:07
together.
8:08
Yeah,
8:08
exactly.
8:08
And
8:09
you're
8:09
really,
8:09
if
8:09
you're
8:09
a
8:10
homeowner,
8:11
you're,
8:11
you're
8:11
really
8:12
counting
8:12
on
8:13
the
8:13
building
8:13
contractor
8:14
and
8:14
the
8:14
code
8:15
officials
8:15
in
8:16
your
8:16
location
8:16
to
8:17
make
8:17
sure
8:17
that
8:17
you
8:17
got
8:17
the
8:18
right
8:18
stuff
8:18
there.
8:19
And
8:19
the
8:20
knowledge
8:20
needs
8:20
to
8:21
get
8:21
transferred
8:21
from
8:22
the
8:22
coast
8:23
to
8:23
the
8:23
inland
8:23
locations
8:24
and
8:24
out
8:24
there
8:24
to
8:25
the
8:25
Pacific
8:25
Northwest.
8:27
You
8:27
think
8:27
about
8:28
it
8:28
just
8:28
as
8:28
a
8:28
homeowner,
8:29
you're
8:29
out
8:29
there,
8:29
you're
8:30
like,
8:30
hey,
8:30
my
8:30
garage
8:30
door
8:31
is
8:31
ugly.
8:31
It's
8:31
an
8:31
old
8:31
one,
8:32
I'm
8:32
going
8:32
to
8:32
go
8:32
put
8:32
one
8:32
on.
8:32
You
8:33
go
8:33
out
8:33
and
8:33
get
8:33
prices
8:33
for
8:34
it.
8:34
And
8:34
you're
8:35
just
8:35
talking
8:35
to
8:35
garage
8:35
doors
8:36
installers,
8:36
you're
8:36
not
8:37
talking
8:37
to
8:37
code
8:37
enforcement,
8:38
you're
8:38
not
8:38
getting
8:38
permits.
8:39
Right.
8:40
And
8:40
you're
8:40
out
8:40
shopping
8:41
for
8:41
them
8:41
and
8:41
go,
8:41
that's
8:42
a
8:42
good
8:42
buy
8:42
right
8:42
there.
8:43
And
8:43
I
8:43
just
8:44
need
8:44
a
8:44
simple
8:44
garage
8:45
door.
8:45
You
8:45
don't
8:45
see
8:45
it
8:45
from
8:45
the
8:46
street,
8:46
who
8:46
cares?
8:47
And
8:47
they
8:47
order
8:47
it
8:48
and
8:48
it
8:49
comes
8:49
in,
8:49
they
8:49
put
8:49
it
8:49
up.
8:50
They
8:50
don't
8:50
think
8:50
I'm
8:50
thinking
8:51
about
8:51
it.
8:51
But
8:51
if
8:51
they'd
8:51
have
8:52
spent
8:52
maybe
8:53
a
8:53
few
8:53
hundred
8:54
to
8:54
a
8:54
thousand
8:54
more,
8:55
the
8:56
level
8:56
of
8:56
protection
8:57
in
8:58
a
8:58
wind
8:58
event
8:58
is
8:59
massive.
8:59
Yeah.
9:00
And
9:00
you
9:00
just,
9:00
you
9:00
just
9:01
made
9:01
an
9:01
excellent
9:01
point
9:02
that
9:02
this
9:02
is
9:02
not
9:03
the
9:03
kind
9:04
of
9:04
mitigation
9:04
that
9:05
maybe
9:05
costs
9:06
you
9:06
a
9:06
fortune
9:06
or
9:07
really
9:07
is
9:07
something
9:07
that
9:08
you
9:08
have
9:08
to
9:08
really
9:08
think
9:09
long
9:09
and
9:09
hard
9:09
about
9:09
because
9:10
it's
9:10
going
9:10
to
9:10
be
9:11
years
9:11
before
9:11
you
9:11
can
9:11
get
9:12
a
9:12
payback
9:12
on
9:12
that.
9:13
That's
9:13
a,
9:13
that's
9:14
a
9:14
relatively
9:15
simple
9:15
and
9:15
affordable
9:16
thing
9:16
to
9:16
do
9:16
to
9:17
upgrade
9:17
your
9:17
door.
9:17
And
9:18
again,
9:18
as
9:19
a
9:19
homeowner
9:20
at
9:20
one,
9:20
an
9:20
uninformed
9:21
homeowner
9:21
at
9:21
one
9:21
point,
9:22
when
9:22
I
9:22
was
9:22
a
9:23
new
9:23
guy
9:23
in
9:23
the
9:23
business
9:24
now
9:24
as
9:25
a
9:25
well
9:25
informed
9:25
homeowner
9:26
and
9:26
a
9:26
builder,
9:27
most
9:27
of
9:27
my
9:28
clients
9:28
paid
9:29
attention
9:29
to
9:29
the
9:29
color
9:29
of
9:29
the
9:30
door
9:30
and
9:30
the
9:31
style
9:31
of
9:31
the
9:31
door,
9:31
that
9:32
those
9:32
are
9:32
the
9:32
things
9:32
that
9:33
they
9:33
were
9:33
going
9:33
to
9:33
interact
9:33
with
9:34
every
9:34
day.
9:34
What
9:34
does
9:34
it
9:34
look
9:35
like?
9:35
How
9:35
does
9:35
it
9:36
enhance
9:36
my
9:36
curb
9:36
appeal?
9:37
And
9:37
those
9:38
are
9:38
reasonable
9:39
and
9:40
justifiable
9:40
things
9:41
to
9:41
be
9:41
thinking
9:41
about.
9:42
But
9:42
you
9:43
also
9:43
want
9:43
it
9:43
to
9:44
perform.
9:44
And
9:45
if
9:45
you
9:45
don't
9:46
know
9:46
the
9:46
design
9:46
pressure
9:46
rating
9:47
of
9:47
your
9:47
door,
9:47
then
9:48
you
9:48
really
9:48
don't
9:48
know
9:48
whether
9:48
it's
9:49
going
9:49
to
9:49
protect
9:49
you.
9:50
The
9:50
fortunate
9:50
thing
9:51
is
9:51
at
9:52
ibhs,
9:53
in
9:53
our
9:53
fortified
9:54
program,
9:55
we
9:55
have
9:55
very
9:56
specific
9:57
information
9:57
about
9:58
what
9:58
kinds
9:59
of
9:59
design
9:59
pressures
9:59
you
10:00
should
10:00
be
10:00
looking
10:00
for
10:00
based
10:00
on
10:01
where
10:01
you
10:01
are
10:01
in
10:01
the
10:02
country.
10:02
That
10:03
way
10:03
you
10:03
can
10:03
just
10:03
say,
10:03
hey,
10:04
I
10:04
need
10:04
a
10:04
door.
10:05
It
10:05
needs
10:05
to
10:05
be
10:05
almond.
10:06
It
10:06
needs
10:06
to
10:06
have
10:07
the
10:07
black
10:07
Brackets
10:08
and
10:08
it
10:08
needs
10:08
to
10:08
be
10:09
DP35
10:10
and
10:11
you
10:11
know,
10:11
plus
10:12
35,
10:12
negative
10:13
35.
10:14
That's
10:14
critical
10:15
information
10:15
that
10:15
now
10:16
your
10:16
supplier
10:16
can
10:17

10:17
you
10:17
a
10:18

10:18
that
10:18
meets
10:18
those
10:18
parameters.
10:19

10:19
you
10:20
are
10:20

to

12:45
Now
12:45
let's
12:46
get
12:46
back
12:46
to
12:46
our
12:46
previous
12:47

12:47

12:54
Let's
12:55
continue
12:55
the
12:55
conversation.
12:56
That
12:56
way
12:56
you
12:56
could
12:57
just
12:57
say,
12:57
hey,
12:57
I
12:57
need
12:58
a
12:58
door.
12:58
It
12:58
needs
12:59
to
12:59
be
12:59
almond.
12:59
It
13:00
needs
13:00
to
13:00
have
13:00
the
13:00
black
13:01
brackets
13:01
and
13:01
it
13:02
needs
13:02
to
13:02
be
13:02
DP35.
13:04
And
13:05
you
13:05
know,
13:05
plus
13:05
35,
13:06
negative
13:06
35.
13:08
That's
13:08
critical
13:08
information
13:09
that
13:09
now
13:09
your
13:09
supplier
13:10
can
13:10
get
13:11
you
13:11
a
13:11
door
13:11
that
13:12
meets
13:12
those
13:12
parameters.
13:14
Yeah,
13:14
that
13:14
is
13:15
smart.
13:15
But
13:15
you
13:15
think
13:15
about
13:15
it,
13:16
I
13:16
don't
13:16
think
13:16
there's
13:16
any
13:16
place
13:17
in
13:17
the
13:17
country
13:17
that
13:17
is
13:18
not
13:18
susceptible
13:19
to
13:19
a
13:20
wind
13:20
event.
13:20
We
13:20
have
13:21
our
13:21
windstorms
13:21
here.
13:21
You
13:22
got
13:22
the
13:22
Santa
13:23
Ana
13:23
winds
13:23
that
13:23
happen
13:24
in
13:24
California.
13:25
You've
13:26
got
13:26
everything
13:26
from
13:27
tornadoes
13:27
and
13:27
windstorms
13:28
across
13:28
the
13:29
Midwest,
13:29
nor'.
13:30
Easter.
13:30
It's
13:31
basically
13:31
something
13:31
that
13:32
every
13:32
homeowner
13:32
should
13:33
be
13:33
taking
13:33
a
13:33
peek
13:33
at
13:33
because
13:34
I
13:34
don't
13:34
think
13:34
there's,
13:35
I
13:35
bet
13:35
you
13:35
there's
13:35
not
13:36
a
13:36
house
13:36
out
13:36
there
13:36
that
13:36
goes,
13:37
oh,
13:37
we
13:37
don't
13:37
ever
13:38
get
13:38
wind.
13:38
Yeah,
13:39
certainly
13:39
not.
13:40
And,
13:40
but
13:40
it
13:40
is
13:41
one
13:41
of
13:41
those
13:41
things
13:41
that's
13:41
underappreciated
13:42
because
13:43
last
13:43
year,
13:43
20,
13:44
23,
13:44
there
13:45
were
13:45
19
13:46
severe
13:47
storm
13:48
weather
13:48
events,
13:49
each
13:49
one
13:49
of
13:50
them
13:50
causing
13:50
a
13:51
billion
13:51
dollars
13:51
in
13:51
damage
13:52
or
13:52
more.
13:52
And
13:52
when
13:53
you
13:53
hear
13:53
that
13:53
number,
13:53
a
13:53
billion
13:53
dollars
13:54
of
13:54
damage,
13:54
that
13:55
means
13:55
homes
13:55
like
13:55
the
13:55
ones
13:56
you
13:56
and
13:56
I
13:56
are
13:56
living
13:56
in,
13:57
that's
13:57
where
13:58
the
13:58
damage
13:58
is
13:58
happening.
13:58
And
13:59
just
13:59
19
14:00
storms
14:00
caused
14:00
over
14:01
$19
14:01
billion
14:02
worth
14:02
of
14:02
damage.
14:03
And
14:03
there
14:03
was
14:03
only
14:03
one
14:03
tropical
14:04
cyclone
14:04
last
14:05
year.
14:05
So
14:05
that
14:06
means
14:06
that
14:06
everywhere
14:07
around
14:07
the
14:07
country
14:07
is
14:08
seeing
14:08
these
14:08
things.
14:08
And
14:09
unfortunately,
14:10
as
14:10
homeowners,
14:11
we
14:12
get
14:12
complacent
14:14
storm,
14:14
but
14:15
we
14:15
need
14:15
to
14:15
recognize
14:16
that
14:16
a
14:16
storm
14:16
doesn't
14:17
have
14:17
to
14:18
make
14:18
national
14:18
headlines
14:19
to
14:19
wreak
14:20
havoc
14:20
on
14:21
your
14:21
home
14:21
or
14:22
even
14:22
your
14:22
business.
14:24
Yeah,
14:25
yeah.
14:25
It's
14:25
huge.
14:26
And
14:26
it's
14:26
funny,
14:27
it's.
14:27
Building
14:27
materials
14:28
are
14:28
such
14:28
a
14:28
big
14:28
part
14:28
of
14:29
this.
14:29
You'd
14:29
mentioned
14:29
roofing
14:30
earlier
14:31
and
14:31
again,
14:31
it's
14:32
like
14:32
garage
14:32
doors.
14:33
People
14:33
go,
14:33
oh,
14:33
that's
14:33
beautiful.
14:34
Oh,
14:34
it's
14:34
got
14:34
a
14:35
30
14:35
year
14:35
warranty.
14:36
Let's
14:37
go
14:37
with
14:37
that.
14:37
I
14:37
like
14:38
the
14:38
look
14:38
of
14:38
that.
14:38
It'll
14:38
be
14:38
a
14:38
nice
14:39
upgrade
14:39
to
14:39
the
14:39
house.
14:40
But
14:41
the
14:41
wind
14:41
resistance
14:42
and
14:42
hail
14:43
damage
14:43
resistance
14:43
and
14:44
all
14:44
that
14:44
other
14:44
stuff
14:45
sometimes
14:46
doesn't
14:46
come
14:46
into
14:46
that
14:46
conversation.
14:47
Yeah,
14:48
for
14:48
sure.
14:48
And
14:49
we
14:50
have
14:50
studied
14:51
how
14:51
buildings
14:52
interact,
14:52
particularly
14:52
with
14:53
high
14:53
winds
14:53
and
14:53
rain
14:53
for
14:54
a
14:54
long
14:54
time.
14:55
Over
14:55
three
14:55
decades
14:56
now,
14:56
IBHS
14:57
has
14:57
been
14:57
studying
14:58
the
14:58
performance
14:59
of
14:59
different
14:59
types
14:59
of
14:59
building
15:00
systems
15:00
and
15:01
how
15:01
they
15:01
perform
15:01
in
15:01
high
15:02
winds
15:02
and
15:02
severe
15:03
rain.
15:04
We
15:04
have
15:04
a
15:04
one
15:04
of
15:04
a
15:05
kind
15:05
research
15:05
facility
15:05
located
15:06
in
15:06
South
15:07
Carolina
15:07
where
15:07
we
15:07
have
15:08
full
15:08
size
15:08
wind
15:08
tunnel.
15:09
We
15:09
can
15:09
put
15:09
full
15:09
size
15:09
houses
15:10
in
15:10
there,
15:11
105
15:11
fans.
15:12
We
15:12
can
15:12
create
15:12
category
15:13
three
15:13
winds,
15:14
we
15:14
can
15:14
create
15:15
realistic
15:15
hail
15:16
storms,
15:16
we
15:16
can
15:16
create
15:17
8
15:17
inches
15:17
of
15:17
rain
15:18
an
15:18
hour.
15:19
So
15:19
we
15:19
really
15:19
are
15:20
able
15:20
to
15:20
look
15:20
at
15:21
these
15:21
systems
15:21
and
15:22
comprehensively
15:23
understand
15:24
them.
15:24
And
15:25
when
15:25
we
15:25
look
15:25
at
15:25
that
15:25
and
15:26
we
15:26
say
15:26
where
15:26
does
15:26
the
15:27
damage
15:27
start
15:27
and
15:28
how
15:28
does
15:28
it
15:29
escalate?
15:29
The
15:30
most
15:30
vulnerable
15:31
system
15:31
in
15:31
the
15:32
house
15:32
is
15:32
your
15:33
roof.
15:33
Yeah.
15:34
It's
15:34
shocking
15:35
and
15:35
it
15:36
again,
15:37
it's
15:37
one
15:37
of
15:37
those
15:38
things
15:38
that
15:38
there
15:38
are
15:39
roof
15:39
systems
15:39
out
15:39
there
15:40
that
15:41
are
15:41
extremely
15:41
durable.
15:42
You
15:42
just
15:42
have
15:43
to
15:43
know
15:43
which
15:43
ones
15:43
you're
15:43
looking
15:44
at
15:44
to
15:44
make
15:44
that
15:45
choice
15:45
and
15:46
have
15:46
a
15:46
roofer
15:46
that's
15:47
going
15:47
to
15:47
spend
15:47
the
15:47
time
15:47
and
15:48
walk
15:48
you
15:48
through
15:48
why
15:48
that's
15:49
such
15:49
a
15:49
good
15:49
system.
15:50
Yeah.
15:50
You
15:50
either
15:50
have
15:51
to
15:51
really
15:51
be
15:52
able
15:52
to
15:52
trust
15:52
your
15:52
roofer
15:53
that
15:53
they're
15:53
going
15:53
to,
15:54
they're
15:54
going
15:54
to
15:54
give
15:54
you
15:54
the
15:54
best
15:55
advice
15:55
that's
15:55
out
15:55
there.
15:56
And
15:56
there's
15:56
a
15:57
lot
15:57
of
15:57
guys
15:57
that
15:57
are
15:58
very
15:58
conscientious
15:58
guys
15:59
and
15:59
gals
15:59
that
15:59
are
15:59
very
15:59
conscientious
16:00
about
16:00
that.
16:01
Or
16:02
you
16:02
can
16:02
look
16:02
at
16:03
something
16:03
like
16:03
fortify,
16:03
which
16:04
lays
16:04
out
16:04
for
16:04
you.
16:05
Here's
16:05
all
16:05
the
16:05
things
16:06
you
16:06
really
16:06
want
16:06
your
16:06
roofer
16:07
to
16:07
do.
16:08
You
16:08
don't
16:08
have
16:08
to
16:08
be
16:08
an
16:09
expert
16:09
and
16:10
talk
16:10
to
16:10
somebody
16:11
like
16:11
you're
16:11
in
16:11
the
16:11
trade.
16:12
You
16:12
just
16:12
have
16:12
to
16:12
say,
16:13
hey,
16:13
I
16:13
know
16:13
about
16:14
this
16:14
fortified
16:14
thing.
16:14
Here's
16:15
their
16:15
checklist.
16:15
I'd
16:16
like
16:16
my
16:16
roof
16:16
to
16:16
check
16:17
all
16:17
these
16:17
boxes
16:18
so
16:18
we
16:18
can
16:18
we
16:19
solve
16:19
a
16:19
lot
16:19
of
16:19
those,
16:20
those
16:20
communication
16:21
challenges
16:21
and
16:21
those
16:22
technical
16:22
issues
16:23
for
16:23
homeowners.
16:23
All
16:24
they
16:24
have
16:24
to
16:24
say
16:24
is,
16:24
I
16:24
want
16:25
a
16:25
fortified
16:25
roof.
16:25
But
16:26
to
16:26
your
16:26
point,
16:27
I
16:27
think
16:27
one
16:27
of
16:27
the
16:27
things
16:28
that
16:28
you
16:28
mentioned.
16:29
And
16:29
I
16:29
think
16:30
it's
16:30
a
16:30
very
16:30
typical
16:30
way
16:31
that
16:31
folks
16:31
look
16:31
at
16:31
their
16:31
roof,
16:32
but
16:32
they're
16:32
primarily
16:33
focused
16:33
on
16:33
the
16:33
COVID
16:33
because
16:34
that's
16:34
the
16:34
thing
16:34
that
16:34
they
16:34
can
16:35
see
16:35
and
16:35
it's
16:35
doing
16:36
the
16:36
heavy
16:36
lifting.
16:37
But
16:37
really
16:38
what
16:38
makes
16:38
a
16:38
roof
16:38
system
16:39
durable
16:40
is
16:40
the
16:41
entire
16:41
system.
16:42
So
16:42
it's
16:42
everything
16:43
that,
16:43
from
16:43
the
16:43
roof
16:44
deck,
16:44
which
16:44
is
16:44
connected
16:45
to
16:45
the,
16:45
either
16:45
the
16:45
rafters
16:46
or
16:46
the
16:46
trusses
16:47
that
16:47
make
16:47
up
16:47
the
16:47
structural
16:48
components
16:49
of
16:49
your
16:49
roof,
16:50
how
16:50
that
16:50
is
16:50
attached,
16:51
how
16:51
thick
16:51
is
16:52
that,
16:52
then
16:53
on
16:54
top
16:54
of
16:54
that,
16:54
there
16:54
should
16:54
be
16:55
a
16:55
redundant
16:56
layer
16:57
of
16:57
roofing
16:58
that
16:59
creates
17:00
what
17:00
we
17:00
call
17:00
a
17:00
sealed
17:01
roof
17:01
deck.
17:02
So
17:02
a
17:02
lot
17:02
of
17:03
times
17:03
in
17:03
modern
17:04
houses,
17:04
especially
17:04
now,
17:05
we
17:05
have
17:05
these
17:06
big
17:06
four
17:06
by
17:06
eight
17:06
sheets
17:07
of
17:07
roof
17:07
sheathing
17:08
that
17:08
come
17:08
together.
17:08
And
17:09
every
17:09
time
17:09
you
17:10
have
17:10
two
17:11
sheets
17:11
coming
17:11
together,
17:12
you
17:12
have
17:12
a
17:12
seam.
17:13
And
17:13
because
17:14
of
17:14
the
17:14
way
17:15
mother
17:15
Nature
17:16
works,
17:16
when
17:17
humidity
17:17
increases
17:18
or
17:18
decreases,
17:18
those
17:18
sheets
17:19
expand
17:19
and
17:19
they
17:20
contract.
17:20
So
17:20
we
17:20
have
17:20
to,
17:21
as
17:21
contractors,
17:22
leave
17:22
a
17:22
gap
17:22
in
17:22
there
17:23
to
17:23
allow
17:23
that
17:23
to
17:23
happen.
17:24
So
17:24
you
17:24
don't
17:24
have
17:24
unfortunate
17:25
cosmetic
17:26
issues,
17:26
you
17:26
don't
17:26
have
17:27
performance
17:27
issues.
17:28
Those
17:29
gaps
17:30
provide
17:30
a,
17:31
an
17:31
unfettered
17:32
pathway
17:32
for
17:32
water
17:33
to
17:33
get
17:34
into
17:34
your
17:34
house
17:35
if
17:36
the
17:36
primary
17:36
roof
17:37
cover
17:37
is
17:37
lost.
17:38
And
17:38
so
17:39
we
17:39
talk
17:40
about,
17:40
we
17:40
talk
17:41
about
17:41
sealing
17:41
up
17:41
the
17:41
roof
17:42
deck,
17:42
and
17:42
we've
17:42
got
17:43
five
17:43
different
17:43
techniques
17:44
for
17:44
doing
17:44
that.
17:45
So
17:45
you
17:45
don't
17:45
have
17:45
to
17:45
just
17:46
be
17:46
married
17:46
to
17:46
one
17:47
specific
17:47
thing.
17:48
There's
17:48
lots
17:48
of
17:48
options
17:49
depending
17:49
on
17:49
where
17:49
you
17:50
are,
17:50
what
17:50
kind
17:50
of
17:50
roofing
17:50
you're
17:51
using,
17:51
what
17:52
climate
17:52
zone
17:53
you're
17:53
in.
17:53
There's
17:53
lots
17:54
of
17:54
ways
17:54
you
17:54
can
17:54
achieve
17:54
a
17:54
sealed
17:55
roof
17:55
deck.
17:56
The
17:56
most
17:56
important
17:56
thing
17:57
is
17:57
you
17:57
get
17:57
one
17:57
that
17:58
you
17:58
have
17:58
one.
17:58
Yeah.
17:59
Because
17:59
our
18:00
studies
18:00
have
18:00
shown
18:01
that
18:02
roof
18:02
coverings,
18:03
they
18:03
fail.
18:03
And
18:04
unfortunately
18:05
they
18:06
fail
18:07
in
18:07
events
18:07
that
18:08
are
18:08
below
18:08
what
18:09
they're
18:09
technical
18:10
design
18:10
level
18:11
is.
18:11
And
18:12
once
18:12
that
18:12
happens,
18:13
if
18:13
you
18:13
don't
18:14
have
18:14
a
18:14
sealed
18:14
roof
18:14
deck,
18:15
a
18:15
typical
18:16
underlayment
18:17
that's
18:17
installed,
18:18
it
18:18
goes
18:18
to,
18:19
and
18:19
now
18:19
that
18:20
exposes
18:20
that
18:20
roof
18:21
deck.
18:21
And
18:22
we
18:22
did
18:22
a
18:22
study
18:23
once
18:23
that
18:23
showed
18:24
that
18:24
for
18:24
every
18:25
inch
18:26
of
18:26
rain
18:26
an
18:26
hour
18:27
that
18:27
falls
18:27
on
18:28
a
18:28
bare
18:28
section
18:29
of
18:29
a
18:29
roof
18:29
deck,
18:29
not
18:30
the
18:30
entire
18:30
roof
18:30
deck,
18:31
a
18:31
bare
18:31
section
18:31
of
18:32
the
18:32
roof
18:32
deck
18:33
that
18:33
can
18:33
allow
18:34
nine
18:34
bathtubs
18:35
of
18:35
water
18:36
to
18:36
come
18:36
into
18:36
your
18:37
house.
18:37
For
18:37
every
18:37
inch
18:38
of
18:38
rain
18:38
that
18:38
falls
18:40
where
18:40
you
18:40
are
18:40
in
18:40
the
18:40
country,
18:40
you
18:41
guys
18:41
get
18:41
a
18:41
lot
18:41
of
18:41
rain.
18:42
Yeah,
18:43
absolutely.
18:44
And
18:45
what's
18:45
interesting,
18:45
and
18:45
it's
18:46
sometimes
18:46
not
18:46
even
18:46
the
18:46
fault
18:47
of
18:47
the
18:47
roofing
18:47
system
18:48
that's
18:48
up
18:48
there,
18:48
maybe
18:49
it's
18:49
the
18:49
neighbor's
18:50
patio
18:50
furniture
18:50
that
18:51
got
18:51
caught
18:51
in
18:51
the
18:51
wind,
18:52
gets
18:52
the
18:53
edge
18:53
of
18:53
the
18:53
house.
18:54
Now
18:54
you've
18:54
damaged
18:55
the
18:55
drip
18:56
edge
18:56
or
18:56
whatever
18:56
and
18:57
the
18:57
wind's
18:57
getting
18:57
underneath
18:58
it
18:58
and
18:58
then
18:59
mother
18:59
nature
18:59
takes
19:00
it
19:00
the
19:00
rest
19:00
of
19:00
the
19:01
way
19:02
and
19:02
then
19:02
you've
19:02
got
19:03
a
19:03
water
19:03
feature
19:03
coming
19:04
into
19:04
your
19:04
living
19:04
room.
19:05
Yeah,
19:05
you're
19:05
right.
19:06
The
19:06
secret
19:06
to
19:06
a
19:07
fortified
19:07
roof
19:08
is,
19:08
you
19:09
know,
19:09
basically
19:09
three
19:09
steps
19:10
that
19:10
can
19:10
be
19:10
summarized
19:11
is
19:11
nail
19:11
it
19:11
down,
19:12
seal
19:12
it
19:12
up,
19:13
lock
19:13
it
19:13
in.
19:14
Nailing
19:14
it
19:14
down
19:14
refers
19:15
to
19:15
that
19:15
roof
19:15
deck.
19:15
Making
19:16
sure
19:16
that's
19:16
properly
19:16
attached
19:17
and
19:17
it's
19:17
not
19:17
going
19:17
to
19:17
go
19:18
anywhere.
19:18
Sealing
19:19
it
19:19
up
19:19
we've
19:19
already
19:20
talked
19:20
about,
19:21
but
19:21
the
19:21
locking
19:22
it
19:22
in
19:22
piece
19:22
is
19:23
the
19:23
edges.
19:23
It
19:23
deals
19:24
with
19:24
how
19:24
the
19:24
edge
19:25
details
19:25
are
19:25
done.
19:25
No
19:26
matter
19:26
what
19:26
your
19:26
roof
19:26
shape
19:27
is,
19:27
whether
19:27
you
19:27
have
19:27
a
19:27
gable
19:28
end
19:28
roof
19:28
shape,
19:28
you
19:29
got
19:29
a
19:29
hip
19:29
roof
19:29
or
19:30
some
19:30
of
19:30
the
19:30
other
19:31
more
19:31
complex
19:32
and
19:32
exotic
19:33
sort
19:33
of
19:33
roof
19:33
shapes
19:34
that
19:34
we
19:34
see
19:34
out
19:34
there,
19:35
wherever
19:36
you
19:36
come
19:36
to
19:36
an
19:37
edge
19:37
or
19:37
a
19:38
ridge,
19:38
okay,
19:39
that's
19:40
where
19:40
the
19:40
highest
19:40
pressures
19:41
are
19:41
going
19:41
to
19:41
be
19:41
exerted
19:42
on
19:42
your
19:43
roof
19:43
by
19:43
the
19:43
wind.
19:44
And
19:44
so
19:44
they're
19:44
very
19:45
vulnerable.
19:45
And
19:45
if
19:46
you,
19:46
if
19:46
you're
19:46
not
19:46
paying
19:47
attention
19:47
to
19:47
those
19:47
details,
19:48
as
19:49
a
19:49
lot
19:49
of
19:49
people
19:49
do,
19:49
they
19:49
gloss
19:50
right
19:50
over
19:50
that
19:50
stuff.
19:51
If
19:51
you're
19:51
not
19:51
paying
19:51
attention
19:51
to
19:52
those
19:52
details,
19:53
you're
19:53
right.
19:53
You
19:54
can
19:54
have
19:54
damage
19:55
that
19:55
gets
19:55
started
19:55
for
19:56
some
19:56
reason
19:57
and
19:57
once
19:57
it
19:58
starts,
19:59
it
19:59
just
19:59
escalates
20:00
from
20:00
there.
20:01
Yeah.
20:02
I
20:02
can't
20:02
tell
20:02
you
20:02
how
20:02
many
20:02
videos
20:03
I've
20:03
seen
20:03
on
20:03
social
20:03
media
20:04
where
20:04
guys
20:04
doing
20:04
roof
20:04
tear
20:05
offs
20:05
and
20:06
they're
20:06
pulling
20:07
like
20:08
a
20:08
full
20:08
square
20:08
of
20:09
shingles
20:09
off
20:09
at
20:09
one
20:10
time
20:10
because
20:10
they
20:10
weren't
20:11
attached
20:11
correctly.
20:12
It
20:13
looked
20:13
like
20:13
it
20:13
was
20:13
the
20:13
easiest
20:14
tear
20:14
out
20:14
ever.
20:15
And
20:15
that's
20:15
just
20:16
an
20:16
installation
20:16
area
20:17
error
20:17
where
20:17
they
20:18
made
20:18
a
20:18
mistake
20:18
but
20:19
at
20:19
some
20:19
point
20:20
down
20:20
the
20:20
road.
20:20
But
20:21
I
20:21
really
20:21
like
20:21
what
20:22
that
20:22
system
20:22
and
20:22
what
20:23
you
20:23
guys
20:23
are
20:23
doing
20:23
and
20:23
I
20:23
think
20:24
we
20:24
should
20:24
talk
20:24
a
20:24
little
20:24
bit.
20:25
Let's
20:25
jump
20:25
off
20:25
materials
20:26
for
20:26
a
20:26
minute
20:26
and
20:27
talk
20:27
about
20:27
fortified
20:28
home
20:28
and
20:28
really
20:28
what
20:29
that
20:29
is.
20:29
Because
20:30
what
20:30
you
20:30
guys
20:30
are
20:31
doing
20:31
I
20:31
love
20:32
because
20:32
it's
20:32
not
20:32
a.
20:33
You're
20:33
not
20:34
one
20:34
manufacturer
20:35
out
20:35
there
20:36
pitching
20:36
a
20:37
product.
20:37
You're
20:37
out
20:38
there
20:38
pitching
20:39
better
20:39
products
20:40
for
20:40
a
20:40
home
20:41
independently.
20:42
And
20:42
I
20:42
love
20:43
that
20:44
you
20:44
have
20:44
multiple
20:44
options
20:45
and
20:45
multiple
20:46

20:47

20:48
durable

20:50
If
20:50
you
20:50
are
20:50
new
20:50

20:51
the
20:51

20:51
you

23:14
Now
23:14
let's
23:15
get
23:15
Back
23:15
to
23:15
our
23:15
previous
23:16

23:23
Let's
23:23
continue
23:24
the
23:24
conversation.
23:25
What
23:25
you
23:26
guys
23:26
are
23:26
doing
23:26
I
23:27
love
23:27
because
23:27
it's
23:27
not
23:28
a.
23:28
You're
23:29
not
23:29
one
23:29
manufacturer
23:30
out
23:30
there
23:31
pitching
23:32
a
23:32
product.
23:32
You're
23:33
out
23:33
there
23:33
pitching
23:34
better
23:35
products
23:35
for
23:36
a
23:36
home
23:36
independently.
23:37
And
23:37
I
23:38
love
23:39
that
23:39
you
23:39
have
23:39
multiple,
23:40
multiple
23:40
options
23:40
and
23:41
multiple
23:41
solutions
23:42
to
23:42
make
23:42
somebody's
23:43
house
23:43
more
23:44
durable
23:44
in
23:44
a
23:45
storm.
23:46
Yeah.
23:46
So
23:46
we
23:46
are,
23:47
as
23:47
a
23:47
5013c
23:49
nonprofit
23:49
research
23:50
organization.
23:51
Our
23:51
focus
23:51
is
23:52
really
23:52
how
23:52
do
23:52
we
23:53
learn
23:53
what
23:53
we
23:53
have
23:54
to
23:54
know
23:54
about
23:54
making
23:55
buildings
23:56
more
23:56
durable
23:57
and
23:57
then
23:57
how
23:57
do
23:58
we
23:58
get
23:58
that
23:58
information
23:58
out
23:59
to
23:59
people
23:59
when.
23:59
At
23:59
the
24:00
right
24:00
time,
24:00
when
24:00
they're
24:00
making
24:01
important
24:01
decisions?
24:02
Sometimes
24:02
you
24:03
may
24:03
be
24:03
making
24:03
a
24:03
decision
24:04
today
24:04
that
24:04
you're
24:05
not
24:05
going
24:05
to
24:05
have
24:05
an
24:05
opportunity
24:06
to
24:06
revisit
24:07
for
24:07
10,
24:07
15,
24:08
20
24:08
years.
24:08
For
24:09
example,
24:09
if
24:09
you're
24:09
putting
24:10
a
24:10
new
24:10
roof
24:10
on
24:10
today
24:10
and
24:11
you
24:11
don't
24:11
know
24:11
about
24:11
Fortified,
24:12
tomorrow
24:13
you
24:13
learn
24:13
about
24:13
Fortified.
24:14
You're
24:14
not
24:14
reroofing
24:15
for,
24:15
you
24:15
know,
24:16
at
24:16
least
24:16
a
24:16
decade.
24:17
So
24:17
it
24:17
makes
24:17
it
24:17
very
24:18
difficult
24:18
to
24:18
accomplish
24:19
something
24:19
affordably
24:20
if
24:20
you,
24:21
if
24:21
you're
24:21
not
24:21
aware.
24:21
So
24:21
we're
24:22
trying
24:22
to
24:22
push
24:22
that
24:23
information
24:23
out.
24:23
That's
24:23
what
24:24
Fortified
24:24
really
24:24
is
24:25
designed
24:25
to
24:25
be,
24:25
is
24:26
a
24:26
way
24:26
to
24:26
get
24:27
information
24:27
out
24:28
to
24:28
the
24:28
folks
24:29
that
24:29
need
24:29
it,
24:29
when
24:30
they
24:30
need
24:30
it.
24:31
But
24:31
Fortified
24:32
is
24:32
based
24:32
on
24:32
the
24:32
science
24:33
that
24:33
we
24:33
do
24:33
at,
24:34
at
24:34
ibhs.
24:36
And
24:36
we've
24:37
looked
24:37
at
24:38
how
24:38
buildings
24:38
interact
24:39
with
24:39
these
24:39
severe
24:40
weather
24:40
events,
24:41
and
24:41
we've
24:41
identified
24:42
what
24:42
is
24:42
the
24:42
hierarchy,
24:43
what
24:43
happens
24:44
first
24:44
at
24:44
the
24:44
and
24:45
most
24:45
frequently
24:45
at
24:45
the
24:46
lowest
24:46
intensity
24:47
of
24:47
wind
24:47
and
24:47
rain.
24:48
And
24:48
then
24:48
how
24:49
do
24:49
we
24:49
ratchet
24:49
up
24:50
the
24:50
level
24:50
of
24:51
resilience
24:52
as
24:52
we
24:52
get
24:53
to
24:53
those
24:53
less
24:53
frequent
24:54
but
24:54
more
24:54
severe
24:55
storms.
24:56
And
24:56
so
24:57
we
24:57
put
24:57
together
24:57
the
24:57
Fortified
24:58
program
24:59
that
24:59
is
24:59
meant
25:00
to
25:00
walk
25:00
alongside
25:02
the
25:02
local
25:02
building
25:02
code.
25:03
We're
25:03
not
25:03
a
25:03
building
25:03
code
25:04
replacement
25:04
because
25:05
our
25:05
mission
25:05
is
25:06
to
25:06
focus
25:06
on
25:06
some
25:07
very
25:07
specific
25:08
things
25:08
in
25:08
the
25:08
house.
25:08
So
25:08
we
25:09
don't
25:09
deal
25:09
with
25:09
things
25:09
like
25:10
H
25:10
vac
25:11
and
25:11
plumbing,
25:11
electrical,
25:12
that
25:12
kind
25:12
of
25:12
stuff.
25:13
We
25:13
deal
25:13
with
25:14
what
25:14
is
25:14
making
25:14
your
25:14
roof
25:15
vulnerable
25:15
to
25:15
wind
25:15
and
25:16
rain.
25:16
How
25:17
can
25:17
we
25:17
secure
25:17
that
25:18
building
25:18
envelope,
25:19
things
25:19
like
25:19
that.
25:20
Fortified
25:20
is
25:20
broken
25:21
down
25:21
into
25:21
three,
25:22
three
25:22
pieces.
25:23
Roof,
25:23
silver
25:24
and
25:24
gold.
25:24
We've
25:25
already
25:25
talked
25:25
a
25:25
bit
25:25
about
25:26
roof.
25:26
If
25:27
you
25:27
want
25:27
to
25:27
improve
25:27
your
25:28
resilience,
25:28
then
25:28
you
25:28
get
25:29
to
25:29
your
25:29
openings.
25:29
And
25:30
that's
25:30
where
25:30
we
25:30
talked
25:30
about
25:30
garage
25:31
doors.
25:31
Right.
25:32
Focusing
25:32
on
25:32
your
25:32
garage
25:33
door,
25:33
especially
25:33
if
25:33
you're
25:34
away
25:34
from
25:34
the
25:34
coast,
25:34
the
25:34
most
25:35
important
25:36
opening
25:36
in
25:36
your
25:36
home
25:37
is
25:37
going
25:37
to
25:37
be
25:37
that
25:38
garage
25:38
door.
25:38
That's
25:38
the
25:38
one
25:38
you're
25:39
going
25:39
to
25:39
want
25:39
to
25:39
focus
25:39
on
25:39
the
25:39
most.
25:40
But
25:40
if
25:40
you
25:40
are
25:40
closer
25:41
to
25:41
the
25:41
coast,
25:41
then
25:42
you
25:42
start
25:42
to
25:42
look
25:42
at
25:42
things
25:43
like
25:43
windows,
25:44
egress
25:45
and
25:45
ingress
25:45
and
25:46
egress
25:46
doors
25:46
or
25:46
personnel
25:47
doors
25:47
in
25:47
and
25:47
out
25:48
of
25:48
the
25:48
house,
25:48
attached
25:49
structures
25:49
like
25:50
porches
25:50
and
25:50
carports,
25:51
how
25:52
are
25:52
those
25:52
attached
25:52
to
25:53
the
25:53
house,
25:53
things
25:54
like
25:54
that.
25:54
And
25:54
then
25:54
if
25:55
you
25:55
want
25:55
to
25:55
have
25:55
the
25:56
supreme
25:56
level
25:56
of
25:56
resilience,
25:57
that's
25:58
where
25:58
you
25:58
go
25:58
to
25:58
gold,
25:58
Fortified
25:59
gold.
25:59
And
25:59
fortified
26:00
gold
26:00
builds
26:01
on
26:01
roof
26:01
and
26:01
silver
26:02
and
26:02
adds
26:03
that
26:03
continuous
26:04
load
26:04
path
26:04
we
26:05
talked
26:05
about
26:05
earlier.
26:05
Right.
26:06
So
26:06
now
26:06
we're
26:06
really
26:06
looking
26:07
at
26:07
how
26:08
is
26:08
the
26:08
load
26:09
path
26:09
designed
26:10
and
26:10
how
26:10
is.
26:11
Are
26:11
the.
26:11
The
26:12
connections,
26:12
how
26:12
are
26:12
they
26:12
executed?
26:13
And
26:14
one
26:14
of
26:14
the
26:14
other
26:14
things
26:14
that
26:15
makes
26:15
fortified
26:15
a
26:16
little
26:16
bit
26:16
different
26:16
than,
26:17
than
26:17
what
26:17
you
26:18
may
26:18
be
26:18
used
26:18
to,
26:19
especially
26:19
if
26:19
you're
26:19
someplace
26:20
that
26:20
doesn't
26:20
have
26:20
a
26:20
lot
26:21
of
26:21
code
26:21
enforcement,
26:22
which
26:22
is
26:22
a
26:23
good
26:23
bit
26:23
of
26:23
the
26:23
country.
26:24
Fortified
26:25
includes
26:25
a
26:25
verification
26:26
step.
26:26
So
26:27
we
26:27
train
26:27
independent
26:28
evaluators
26:29
across
26:30
the
26:30
country.
26:30
We're
26:30
in
26:30
27
26:31
states
26:31
now,
26:32
over
26:32
60,000
26:33
homeowners
26:33
living
26:33
under
26:34
fortified
26:34
roofs.
26:34
Now,
26:35
we'll
26:35
do
26:35
another
26:35
15
26:36
to
26:36
17,000
26:37
this
26:37
year,
26:38
but
26:38
we
26:38
train
26:39
independent
26:39
evaluators.
26:40
We
26:40
also
26:40
train
26:40
roofing
26:41
contractors
26:41
to
26:42
know
26:42
how
26:42
to
26:42
install
26:42
fortified
26:43
roofs.
26:44
But
26:44
the
26:44
evaluators
26:46
partner
26:46
up
26:47
with
26:47
the
26:47
homeowner
26:47
and
26:47
the
26:47
contractor.
26:48
They
26:49
collect
26:49
documentation
26:50
during
26:50
the
26:51
construction
26:51
process,
26:52
whether
26:52
it's
26:52
a
26:52
re
26:52
roof
26:53
or
26:53
it's
26:53
a
26:53
new
26:54
construction
26:54
job.
26:56
And
26:56
at
26:56
the
26:56
end
26:56
of
26:56
that,
26:57
similar
26:57
to
26:57
what
26:58
you
26:58
may
26:58
be
26:58
familiar
26:58
with
26:58
when
26:59
it
26:59
comes
26:59
to
26:59
LEED
26:59
or
27:00
Energy
27:00
Star,
27:01
they
27:01
bundle
27:02
up
27:02
all
27:02
that
27:02
information.
27:03
They
27:03
send
27:03
that
27:04
up
27:04
to
27:04
me
27:04
and
27:05
my
27:05
team,
27:06
and
27:06
we
27:06
have
27:06
a
27:07
staff
27:07
of
27:07
experts
27:08
that
27:08
looks
27:08
at
27:08
every
27:09
single
27:09
job,
27:09
reviews
27:10
every
27:10
single
27:10
picture,
27:11
and
27:11
says,
27:11
hey,
27:11
you
27:11
know
27:12
what?
27:12
This
27:12
meets
27:12
the
27:12
fortified
27:13
standard.
27:14
We
27:14
send
27:14
out
27:15
a
27:15
certificate.
27:16
And
27:16
that
27:16
certificate
27:17
then
27:17
can
27:18
unlock
27:18
things
27:18
like
27:19
lower
27:19
insurance
27:20
rates
27:21
more.
27:21
It
27:21
can
27:21
give
27:21
you
27:22
more
27:22
choices
27:22
when
27:22
it
27:22
comes
27:22
to
27:23
property
27:23
insurance.
27:24
There's
27:24
tax
27:24
incentives,
27:25
and
27:26
for
27:27
most
27:27
people,
27:27
it
27:28
gives
27:28
you
27:28
the
27:28
ability
27:29
to
27:29
communicate
27:29
to
27:29
a
27:29
potential
27:30
buyer,
27:31
hey,
27:31
my
27:31
house
27:32
has
27:32
these
27:32
improvements
27:33
built
27:33
in.
27:33
And
27:34
this
27:34
certificate
27:34
tells
27:35
you
27:35
that
27:35
you
27:35
can
27:35
count
27:36
on
27:36
the
27:36
things
27:36
that
27:36
are
27:36
there.
27:37
So
27:38
that's.
27:38
That's
27:38
fortified
27:39
in
27:39
a
27:39
nutshell.
27:41
Yeah.
27:41
And
27:41
it's
27:41
amazing.
27:42
A
27:42
lot
27:42
of
27:42
people,
27:42
we've
27:42
got
27:43
people
27:43
all
27:43
coast
27:43
to
27:44
coast
27:44
in
27:44
the
27:44
country
27:44
that
27:44
listen
27:45
to
27:45
this
27:45
radio
27:45
show
27:45
and
27:45
podcast
27:46
and
27:47
worldwide.
27:47
But
27:48
I
27:48
think
27:48
a
27:49
lot
27:49
of
27:49
people
27:49
think
27:49
of
27:49
you
27:50
guys
27:50
as
27:50
the.
27:50
You're
27:51
the
27:51
Gulf
27:51
coast
27:51
states
27:52
group,
27:53
but
27:53
you
27:53
deal
27:53
with
27:53
wildfires
27:54
and
27:55
everything
27:55
else.
27:56
And
27:56
on
27:56
the
27:56
west
27:56
coast,
27:57
that's
27:58
a
27:58
common
27:58
occurrence
27:59
for
27:59
us
27:59
here.
27:59
And
28:00
even,
28:00
shockingly,
28:01
I
28:01
think,
28:01
for
28:01
the
28:01
world
28:02
Hawaii
28:03
last
28:03
year.
28:03
And
28:03
there
28:03
was
28:04
such
28:04
a
28:04
great
28:04
example
28:05
of
28:05
seeing
28:05
the
28:05
flyovers
28:07
of
28:07
the
28:07
devastation
28:08
there.
28:08
But
28:08
then
28:09
you
28:09
see
28:09
a
28:09
home
28:10
or
28:10
two
28:11
that
28:11
are
28:11
virtually
28:12
untouched,
28:13
and
28:13
everything
28:13
else
28:14
you
28:14
can't
28:14
even
28:14
tell,
28:14
except
28:15
for
28:15
some
28:15
concrete
28:15
foundation,
28:16
that
28:17
something
28:17
was
28:17
even
28:17
there
28:17
to
28:18
begin
28:18
with.
28:18
And
28:19
it
28:19
really
28:19
shows
28:19
how
28:20
planning
28:21
ahead
28:21
on
28:21
the
28:21
building
28:22
side
28:22
of
28:22
things
28:23
can
28:23
make
28:24
a
28:24
difference
28:24
of
28:24
the
28:24
house
28:24
standing
28:25
or
28:25
not
28:25
being
28:26
a
28:27
sign
28:27
of
28:27
it.
28:28
Yeah,
28:28
I
28:28
think
28:29
that
28:29
the
28:29
important
28:29
thing,
28:29
too,
28:30
to
28:30
know
28:30
is
28:30
that
28:31
you
28:31
don't
28:31
have
28:32
to
28:32
be
28:32
building
28:32
new
28:33
to
28:33
get
28:33
to
28:33
be
28:33
resilient.
28:34
There
28:34
are
28:35
things
28:35
you
28:35
can
28:35
do
28:36
to
28:36
fortify
28:37
or
28:37
make
28:37
your
28:37
home.
28:38
Wildfire
28:38
Prepared.
28:39
Our
28:39
sister
28:40
program,
28:40
which
28:40
you
28:40
just
28:41
referred
28:41
to,
28:41
is
28:41
called
28:41
Wildfire
28:42
Prepared.
28:42
And
28:43
it
28:43
follows
28:43
a
28:43
very
28:44
similar
28:45
sort
28:45
of
28:45
philosophy
28:46
that
28:46
we
28:46
do
28:46
on
28:46
the
28:46
fortified
28:47
side,
28:47
but
28:48
it
28:48
really
28:48
says,
28:48
what
28:49
is
28:49
the
28:49
thing
28:49
that
28:49
poses
28:50
the
28:50
most
28:50
risk
28:51
and
28:51
what
28:51
can
28:51
we
28:51
do
28:51
about
28:52
it?
28:52
And
28:52
on
28:52
the
28:52
wildfire
28:53
side,
28:53
by
28:54
the
28:54
way,
28:54
I
28:54
didn't
28:54
mention
28:55
it
28:55
earlier,
28:55
but
28:55
at
28:56
our
28:56
research
28:56
center,
28:56
we
28:56
actually
28:57
can
28:57
burn
28:57
stuff,
28:58
too.
28:58
We
28:58
could
28:58
create
28:58
ember
28:59
showers
28:59
in
28:59
our
28:59
test
29:00
chamber,
29:00
and
29:01
we
29:01
can
29:01
really
29:01
understand
29:03
how
29:03
wind
29:03
impacts
29:04
the
29:04
flow
29:05
of
29:05
embers
29:05
around
29:05
a
29:06
house,
29:06
how
29:06
radiant
29:07
heat
29:07
and
29:08
how
29:08
the
29:09
proximity
29:09
of
29:10
different
29:10
types
29:11
of
29:11
fuel
29:11
can
29:12
interact
29:13
with
29:13
the
29:13
building.
29:14
But
29:14
on
29:14
the
29:14
wildfire
29:15
side,
29:16
Lahaina
29:17
provided
29:18
a
29:18
really
29:18
clear
29:18
and
29:19
stark
29:19
example
29:20
of
29:20
how
29:21
important
29:21
that
29:21
first
29:22
zero
29:22
to
29:22
five
29:22
feet
29:23
happens
29:24
to
29:24
be
29:24
around
29:24
your
29:24
house.
29:25
That's
29:25
where
29:26
a
29:26
lot
29:26
of
29:27
combustible
29:28
material
29:28
tends
29:29
to
29:29
accumulate
29:29
around
29:30
our
29:30
house.
29:31
And
29:31
if
29:31
you
29:31
have
29:31
those
29:32
fuels
29:32
up
29:32
close,
29:34
your
29:34
home
29:34
is
29:35
really
29:35
vulnerable.
29:35
And
29:36
that's
29:36
going
29:36
to
29:36
create.
29:37
It's
29:37
going
29:37
to
29:37
require
29:38
a
29:38
change
29:38
in
29:39
how
29:39
we
29:39
as
29:39
consumers
29:40
and
29:40
homeowners
29:41
think
29:41
about
29:42
our
29:42
property,
29:43
because
29:43
we
29:43
love
29:43
to
29:43
have
29:43
beautiful
29:44
stuff
29:45
right
29:45
up
29:45
close
29:45
to
29:45
our
29:46
house.
29:46
We
29:46
don't
29:46
want
29:47
it
29:47
to
29:47
be.
29:47
We
29:48
don't
29:48
want
29:48
it
29:48
to
29:48
be
29:49
unattractive
29:50
from
29:50
what
29:50
we're
29:50
traditionally
29:51
used
29:51
to.
29:52
But
29:52
if
29:52
you
29:53
really
29:53
want
29:53
to.
29:53
If
29:54
you
29:54
really
29:54
want
29:54
to
29:54
take
29:55
control
29:55
and
29:56
minimize
29:56
your
29:56
risk,
29:57
we
29:57
really
29:57
got
29:58
to
29:58
think
29:58
about
29:58
that.
29:58
Zero
29:59
to
29:59
five
29:59
feet.
30:00
Yeah.
30:01
Those
30:01
beautiful
30:01
evergreen
30:02
shrubs
30:03
and
30:04
landscape
30:05
bark.
30:05
And
30:06
even
30:06
just
30:06
lack
30:07
of
30:07
maintenance
30:07
can
30:08
be
30:08
the
30:08
difference
30:08
of
30:08
having
30:09
a
30:09
beautiful
30:09
home
30:09
and
30:10
filing
30:10
an
30:10
insurance
30:11
claim
30:11
for
30:11
the
30:11
whole
30:11
home,
30:12
for
30:12
the
30:12
whole
30:12
thing.
30:12
You
30:12
know
30:13
what?
30:13
You
30:13
just
30:13
said
30:13
something
30:13
that's
30:14
super,
30:14
super
30:15
important,
30:15
Eric,
30:16
and
30:16
that
30:16
is
30:16
this
30:16
concept
30:17
of
30:17
maintenance
30:18
and
30:18
deferring
30:18
maintenance.
30:19
The.
30:20
When
30:20
it
30:20
comes
30:20
to
30:20
an
30:21
existing
30:21
home,
30:21
whether
30:21
you're
30:22
trying
30:22
to
30:22
resist
30:22
high
30:23
wind
30:23
or
30:23
rain,
30:23
or
30:23
you're
30:24
trying
30:24
to
30:24
resist
30:25
wildfire
30:26
types
30:26
of
30:26
scenarios,
30:27
homeowner
30:28
maintenance
30:28
plays
30:29
a
30:29
big
30:29
role
30:30
in
30:30
landscape
30:31
maintenance.
30:31
In
30:31
particular,
30:32
when
30:32
it
30:32
comes
30:32
to
30:32
wildfire.
30:33
But
30:34
lots
30:34
of
30:34
folks
30:35
may
30:35
be
30:35
listening
30:35
to
30:36
this
30:36
and
30:36
saying,
30:36
you
30:36
know
30:36
what,
30:36
I'm
30:37
not
30:37
building
30:37
a
30:37
new
30:37
house
30:37
anytime
30:38
soon.
30:38
Interest
30:38
rates
30:39
are
30:39
pretty
30:39
high
30:39
and
30:40
I'm
30:40
not
30:40
sure
30:40
when
30:41
I'll
30:41
be
30:41
able
30:41
to
30:41
afford
30:41
to
30:41
do
30:41
that.
30:42
If
30:42
you're
30:43
an
30:43
existing
30:43
home,
30:43
you
30:43
may
30:43
not
30:44
be
30:44
moving
30:44
anytime
30:44
soon.
30:45
You're
30:45
looking
30:45
at
30:45
how
30:45
do
30:46
I
30:46
harden
30:46
my
30:46
house
30:47
that
30:47
I'm
30:47
in
30:47
today?
30:48
And
30:48
there's
30:49
a
30:49
lot
30:49
of
30:49
DIY
30:49
stuff
30:50
that
30:50
you
30:50
can
30:50
do
30:51
to
30:52
help
30:52
to
30:52
minimize
30:53
the
30:53
potential
30:54
impact
30:54
of
30:54
severe
30:54
weather.
30:55
It
30:56
does
30:56
not
30:56
necessarily
30:57
take
30:57
a
30:57
reroof
30:58
to
30:58
do
30:58
it.
30:58
And
30:59
we
30:59
have
30:59
some
30:59
really
31:00
great
31:00
resources
31:01
for
31:01
folks.
31:01
We
31:01
have
31:02
a
31:02
website
31:02
called
31:03
ibhs.org
31:04
if
31:04
you
31:04
go
31:04
to
31:05
ibhs.org
31:06
we
31:06
have
31:06
on
31:07
our
31:07
website
31:07
things
31:08
called
31:08
the
31:08
Thunderstorm
31:09
ready
31:09
guides.
31:10
And
31:10
in
31:10
there
31:11
there's
31:11
a
31:11
list
31:11
of
31:11
things
31:12
that
31:12
you
31:12
can
31:12
do.
31:12
Just
31:13
as
31:13
a
31:13
couple
31:13
of
31:14
examples
31:14
if
31:14
you're
31:14
really
31:15
worried
31:15
about
31:15
wind
31:15
and
31:15
rain.
31:16
And
31:16
as
31:16
we've
31:16
talked
31:17
about,
31:17
everybody
31:17
should
31:17
be
31:18
a
31:18
couple
31:18
of
31:18
things
31:18
that
31:19
really
31:19
stand
31:20
out.
31:20
One
31:20
is
31:21
take
31:21
a
31:21
walk
31:22
around
31:22
your
31:22
house
31:22
and
31:23
look
31:23
to
31:23
see
31:23
if
31:23
you
31:23
see
31:23
any
31:24
gaps
31:24
around
31:25
your
31:25
windows,
31:25
your
31:25
doors,
31:26
things
31:26
like
31:27
caulking.
31:28
A
31:28
small
31:28
opening
31:29
can
31:30
allow
31:30
a
31:30
tremendous
31:31
amount
31:31
of
31:31
water
31:31
in.
31:32
And
31:32
unfortunately
31:32
what
31:33
we
31:33
see
31:33
is
31:34
once
31:34
water
31:35
gets
31:35
in,
31:36
the
31:36
cascade
31:36
of
31:37
damage
31:37
and
31:37
the
31:38
and
31:38
the
31:38
amount
31:39
of
31:39
financial
31:40
loss
31:40
that
31:41
can
31:41
occur
31:42
grows
31:42
rapidly.
31:43
So
31:43
even
31:44
those
31:44
small
31:44
gaps
31:45
just
31:45
going
31:45
around
31:45
with
31:45
a
31:45
tube
31:46
of
31:46
caulking
31:46
and
31:46
caulking
31:47
those
31:47
gaps
31:48
is
31:48
a
31:48
really
31:48
great
31:48
way
31:49
to
31:49
to
31:49
minimize
31:50
wind
31:50
and
31:50
rain
31:51
risk.
31:51
Also
31:51
helps
31:52
out
31:52
with
31:52
wildfire,
31:53
to
31:53
be
31:53
honest
31:53
with
31:53
you,
31:53
because
31:54
embers
31:54
just
31:54
need
31:55
a
31:55
small
31:55
little
31:55
area
31:55
to
31:56
get
31:56
into
31:56
something
31:57
that
31:57
is
31:57
combustible.
31:58
Caulking
31:58
is
31:58
one
31:59
thing.
31:59
Taking
32:00
a
32:00
walk
32:00
around
32:00
your
32:00
house,
32:01
trimming
32:01
up
32:01
your
32:01
trees,
32:03
cleaning
32:03
up
32:03
debris,
32:04
making
32:04
room
32:05
in
32:05
your
32:05
garage
32:05
for
32:06
your
32:06
car
32:06
to
32:06
get
32:07
back
32:07
in
32:07
there.
32:07
Right?
32:07
How
32:08
many
32:08
of
32:08
us
32:08
have
32:08
accumulated
32:09
stuff
32:09
in
32:09
our
32:09
garage
32:09
and
32:10
our
32:10
car
32:10
can't
32:10
go
32:10
in?
32:11
But
32:11
if
32:11
your
32:11
car's
32:11
sitting
32:11
outside
32:12
and
32:12
the
32:12
hail
32:12
storm
32:13
comes,
32:14
you're
32:14
going
32:14
to
32:14
be
32:14
looking
32:15
at
32:15
some
32:15
pretty
32:15
serious
32:15
damage.
32:16
So
32:16
just
32:16
those
32:17
kinds
32:17
of
32:17
things
32:17
and
32:18

32:22
do
32:23
in
32:23
small
32:23
chunks.
32:24
You
32:24
don't
32:24
have
32:24
to
32:24
do
32:25
it
32:25
all.

34:46
get
34:46
back
34:46
to

our

Home
34:53
Safety.
34:54
Let's
34:55
continue
34:55
the
34:55
conversation.
34:56
Obviously,
34:57
property
34:57
insurance
34:58
has
34:58
a
34:58
place
34:58
in
34:59
the
34:59
market.
34:59
Right.
34:59
It
35:00
has
35:00
a
35:00
role
35:00
to
35:00
play.
35:01
And
35:01
there
35:01
are
35:01
some
35:02
risks
35:02
that,
35:03
you
35:03
know,
35:03
when
35:03
it
35:04
comes
35:04
to
35:04
mitigation,
35:05
the
35:05
gap
35:05
between
35:06
what
35:06
you're
35:06
able
35:06
to
35:06
do
35:07
and
35:08
what
35:08
may
35:08
happen.
35:09
Insurance
35:09
is
35:09
there
35:09
to
35:10
take
35:10
care
35:10
of
35:10
that.
35:11
But
35:11
we
35:11
can
35:11
really,
35:12
as
35:12
homeowners
35:13
and
35:13
consumers
35:14
of
35:14
insurance,
35:14
we
35:15
can
35:15
really
35:16
help
35:16
out
35:16
what
35:17
we
35:17
pay
35:17
or
35:18
what
35:18
might
35:18
be
35:18
available
35:18
to
35:19
us
35:19
by
35:19
taking
35:20
care
35:20
of
35:20
those
35:20
smaller
35:21
risks.
35:21
Right.
35:21
Taking
35:22
care
35:22
of
35:22
those
35:22
things
35:22
that
35:23
most
35:23
people
35:24
take
35:24
for
35:24
granted
35:24
that
35:25
small
35:25
things
35:25
might
35:26
happen.
35:26
But
35:27
enough
35:27
of
35:27
those
35:27
small
35:28
things
35:28
occur
35:28
over
35:29
a
35:29
wide
35:30
enough
35:30
area
35:30
and
35:30
it
35:30
ends
35:31
up
35:31
in
35:31
a
35:31
billion
35:31
dollar
35:32
loss
35:32
for
35:32
a
35:32
storm
35:33
that
35:33
didn't
35:33
make
35:33
any
35:33
headlines.
35:34
And
35:34
that's,
35:35
that's
35:35
the
35:35
crazy
35:35
part.
35:36
If
35:36
we
35:36
keep
35:36
our
35:36
focus
35:37
on
35:37
what
35:37
are
35:38
the
35:38
things
35:38
we
35:38
can
35:39
do,
35:39
then
35:40
there,
35:40
there's
35:40
a,
35:40
there's
35:41
opportunities
35:41
to
35:42
help
35:42
us
35:42
with
35:42
the
35:42
risks
35:43
that
35:43
are
35:43
maybe
35:44
a
35:44
little
35:44
bit
35:44
further,
35:45
a
35:45
little
35:45
bit
35:45
more
35:45
comprehensive
35:46
to
35:46
deal
35:46
with.
35:47
But
35:47
storm
35:48
shelters,
35:48
to
35:48
your
35:49
point,
35:49
one
35:49
of
35:49
the
35:49
things
35:50
that,
35:50
that
35:50
is
35:50
really
35:51
encouraging
35:51
to
35:52
see.
35:52
There's
35:52
a
35:52
lot
35:52
of
35:52
innovation
35:53
going
35:53
on
35:53
in
35:54
that
35:54
space.
35:55
There's
35:55
a
35:55
lot
35:55
of
35:56
ways
35:56
that
35:56
you
35:56
can
35:56
create
35:57
storm
35:58
shelters
35:58
either
35:58
in
35:59
a
35:59
closet
35:59
or
35:59
in
36:00
a
36:00
garage
36:00
or
36:01
an
36:01
exterior
36:02
shelter.
36:02
So
36:03
people
36:03
should
36:03
definitely,
36:04
if
36:04
you
36:04
happen
36:04
to
36:04
be
36:04
in
36:04
an
36:05
area
36:05
that's
36:05
particularly
36:05
prone
36:06
to
36:06
severe
36:06
convective
36:07
storms,
36:07
which
36:07
is
36:08
the
36:08
fancy
36:08
word
36:09
for
36:09
storms
36:09
that
36:09
can
36:09
spawn
36:10
tornadoes,
36:10
storm
36:11
shelters
36:11
are
36:11
definitely
36:12
something
36:12
to
36:12
strongly
36:13
consider.
36:14
Yeah,
36:15
that's
36:15
smart.
36:15
And
36:16
to
36:16
highlight
36:17
your
36:17
point
36:17
earlier,
36:17
of
36:18
maintenance,
36:18
I
36:19
have
36:19
13
36:19
of
36:19
those
36:19
big
36:20
trees
36:20
in
36:20
my
36:20
yard.
36:20
I
36:21
didn't
36:21
lose
36:21
a
36:21
single
36:22
one
36:22
of
36:22
them.
36:22
But
36:22
I
36:22
have
36:22
an
36:23
arborist
36:23
out
36:23
almost
36:23
every
36:24
year
36:24
that
36:24
walks
36:25
through
36:25
and
36:25
takes
36:25
a
36:25
peek
36:26
at
36:26
stuff
36:26
to
36:26
make
36:26
sure
36:26
things
36:27
are
36:27
looking
36:27
good.
36:28
Yeah,
36:28
I've
36:28
got
36:28
a
36:28
dump
36:28
trailer
36:29
full
36:29
of
36:29
limbs,
36:30
but
36:30
that's
36:30
an
36:30
easy
36:31
cleanup
36:31
compared
36:32
to
36:32
severe
36:33
damage
36:33
like
36:33
that.
36:34
So
36:34
my
36:34
trees
36:34
did
36:35
well
36:35
because
36:35
I
36:36
had
36:36
a
36:36
guy
36:36
come
36:36
out
36:36
and
36:36
look
36:36
at
36:37
them
36:37
every
36:37
year.
36:38
Yeah,
36:39
you
36:39
can't,
36:39
you
36:39
can't.
36:40
There
36:40
is
36:40
no
36:40
substitute
36:41
for
36:41
preparedness
36:42
and
36:42
taking,
36:43
taking
36:44
action
36:44
to,
36:45
to
36:45
really
36:45
understand,
36:46
hey,
36:46
do
36:46
I
36:46
have
36:46
something
36:47
I
36:47
need
36:47
to
36:47
be
36:47
worried
36:47
about?
36:48
And
36:48
sometimes
36:48
that
36:48
means
36:48
you
36:49
got
36:49
to
36:49
get
36:49
it
36:49
professional.
36:50
Now
36:50
look
36:50
that
36:50
it's
36:51
not
36:51
all
36:51
always
36:52
the
36:52
case.
36:52
Resilience
36:53
can
36:53
be
36:54
affordable
36:54
for
36:55
everybody.
36:56
And,
36:56
and
36:56
part
36:57
of
36:57
what
36:57
we
36:57
try
36:58
to
36:58
do
36:58
through
36:58
our
36:58
Science
36:59
and
36:59
through
36:59
our
36:59
programs
37:00
is
37:00
say,
37:00
hey,
37:01
when
37:01
you
37:02
are
37:02
thinking
37:02
about
37:03
managing
37:03
your
37:04
risk
37:04
and
37:04
making
37:04
your
37:05
home
37:05
or
37:05
your
37:05
business
37:06
more
37:06
resilient,
37:07
here's
37:08
the
37:08
priorities
37:08
that
37:09
you
37:09
should
37:09
have.
37:09
These
37:10
are
37:10
the
37:10
things
37:10
that
37:10
you
37:11
should
37:11
be
37:11
thinking
37:11
about.
37:12
Because
37:13
nobody
37:13
wants
37:14
to
37:14
see
37:14
somebody
37:15
who's
37:15
really
37:16
focusing
37:16
on
37:17
preserving
37:17
their
37:18
economic
37:19
capabilities
37:20
wasting
37:20
their
37:21
money
37:21
on
37:21
something
37:22
that
37:22
they
37:22
just
37:23
maybe
37:23
shouldn't
37:24
have
37:24
to
37:24
spend
37:24
their
37:24
money
37:25
on.
37:25
That
37:25
right
37:25
now,
37:26
if
37:26
they,
37:26
those
37:26
dollars
37:27
would
37:27
have
37:27
been
37:27
better
37:28
allocated
37:28
if
37:29
they
37:29
could
37:29
have
37:29
focused
37:30
on
37:30
say,
37:30
their
37:31
roof
37:31
versus
37:32
installing
37:33
some
37:33
sort
37:33
of
37:34
additional
37:34
load
37:35
path
37:35
enhancement
37:36
for
37:36
a
37:36
storm
37:37
that
37:37
they
37:37
might
37:37
not
37:37
see
37:38
for
37:38
a
37:39
decade
37:39
versus
37:39
one
37:40
that
37:40
they're
37:40
going
37:40
to
37:40
see
37:40
every
37:41
single
37:41
year.
37:43
That's
37:43
the
37:44
other
37:44
benefit
37:44
of
37:45
a
37:45
program
37:45
like
37:45
Wildfire
37:46
prepared
37:47
or
37:47
fortified
37:48
is
37:48
we've
37:49
already
37:49
done
37:50
the
37:50
hard
37:50
work
37:51
to
37:51
say
37:52
what
37:52
should
37:52
my
37:53
priorities
37:53
be?
37:54
And
37:54
then
37:54
we
37:54
stack
37:55
them
37:55
so
37:55
that
37:55
people
37:56
know
37:56
what
37:57
to
37:57
do.
37:58
Yeah.
37:59
One
37:59
thing
37:59
I
37:59
wanted
37:59
to
38:00
talk
38:00
about,
38:00
and
38:00
that's
38:00
the
38:01
great
38:01
thing
38:01
that
38:02
we
38:02
haven't
38:02
really
38:02
addressed
38:03
too
38:03
much
38:03
is
38:03
windows.
38:04
Because
38:05
again,
38:05
that's
38:06
another
38:06
big
38:06
opening
38:07
into
38:07
your
38:07
house.
38:07
And
38:07
it
38:08
doesn't
38:08
matter
38:08
if
38:08
you've
38:09
got
38:09
a
38:10
West
38:10
coast
38:10
windstorm
38:11
or
38:11
you're
38:11
down
38:11
on
38:11
the
38:11
Gulf
38:11
coast
38:12
or
38:12
you're
38:12
up
38:12
waiting
38:13
for
38:13
the
38:13
nor'
38:13
easter
38:14
or
38:14
even
38:14
the
38:14
hurricane
38:14
going
38:15
up
38:15
the
38:15
East
38:15
Coast.
38:15
These
38:16
are
38:16
important
38:17
openings
38:17
that
38:18
again,
38:18
can
38:19
lead
38:19
to
38:19
more
38:19
damage.
38:20
And
38:20
I
38:20
love
38:20
what
38:20
they've
38:21
been
38:21
doing
38:22
in
38:22
the
38:22
Gulf
38:22
coast
38:22
states
38:23
as
38:23
far
38:23
as
38:23
having
38:24
very
38:24
impact
38:25
resistant
38:25
windows
38:26
that'll.
38:27
If
38:27
something
38:27
gets
38:28
loose
38:28
out
38:28
there,
38:28
it
38:28
hits
38:29
the
38:29
window
38:29
that
38:29
you
38:29
haven't
38:30
just
38:30
created
38:30
a
38:30
big
38:30
freeway
38:31
into
38:31
your,
38:31
into
38:32
your
38:32
living
38:32
room,
38:32
for
38:33
instance,
38:33
with
38:33
wind
38:33
there.
38:34
Again,
38:34
in
38:35
the
38:35
Gulf
38:35
coast,
38:35
in
38:36
particularly
38:36
in
38:36
places
38:37
like
38:37
Florida
38:37
and
38:38
places
38:39
where
38:39
the
38:39
most
38:40
modern
38:40
codes
38:41
are
38:41
enforced
38:42
and
38:42
being
38:42
enforced.
38:43
We've
38:44
been
38:44
looking
38:44
at
38:44
design
38:44
pressures
38:45
and
38:45
impact
38:45
rating
38:46
for
38:46
a
38:46
long
38:46
time.
38:46
Why
38:47
is
38:47
design
38:47
pressure
38:48
important
38:48
for
38:48
a
38:48
window?
38:49
Again,
38:49
when
38:49
that
38:49
wind
38:50
is
38:50
pressing
38:50
against
38:50
that
38:51
window
38:52
and
38:52
rain
38:53
is
38:53
blowing
38:53
against
38:53
that
38:53
window,
38:55
the
38:55
pressure
38:55
that
38:55
builds
38:56
up
38:56
on
38:56
that
38:56
window
38:56
can
38:57
force
38:57
the
38:57
water
38:57
in.
38:58
And
38:58
so
38:58
there
38:58
are
38:58
tests
38:59
to
38:59
help
38:59
minimize
39:00
that.
39:00
It
39:00
doesn't
39:01
necessarily
39:01
eliminate
39:02
water
39:02
getting
39:02
in
39:03
that
39:03
way,
39:03
but
39:03
there
39:04
are
39:04
tests
39:04
that
39:04
say,
39:04
hey,
39:05
this
39:05
has
39:05
been
39:05
pressure
39:05
rated.
39:06
And
39:06
if
39:06
you
39:06
know
39:07
what
39:07
your
39:07
design
39:07
pressure
39:08
rating
39:08
should
39:08
be
39:09
because
39:09
of
39:09
the
39:09
risk
39:10
that
39:10
you're
39:10
likely
39:10
to
39:10
face,
39:11
then
39:11
you
39:11
can
39:12
ask
39:12
specifically
39:13
for
39:13
those
39:13
kinds
39:14
of,
39:14
of
39:14
components.
39:15
Same
39:15
goes
39:16
for
39:16
doors,
39:16
but
39:17
those
39:17
openings,
39:18
one
39:18
of
39:18
the
39:18
big
39:18
things
39:19
that
39:19
really
39:19
needs
39:19
to
39:20
be
39:20
paid
39:20
attention
39:20
to
39:20
is
39:21
installation.
39:21
Right.
39:21
You
39:22
can
39:22
have
39:22
the
39:22
best
39:22
window
39:22
in
39:22
the
39:23
world.
39:23
You
39:23
can
39:23
have
39:23
the
39:23
best
39:23
door.
39:24
I
39:25
know
39:25
I'm
39:25
preaching
39:25
to
39:25
the
39:25
choir.
39:26
But
39:26
when
39:27
I
39:27
go
39:27
out
39:27
and
39:27
I
39:27
look
39:28
at
39:28
these
39:28
post
39:28
disaster
39:30
scenarios,
39:30
or
39:30
even
39:30
when
39:31
I'm
39:31
out
39:31
on
39:31
a
39:31
sunny
39:31
day
39:31
and
39:32
I'm
39:32
walking
39:32
through
39:32
jobs
39:32
that
39:33
maybe
39:33
aren't
39:33
following
39:33
Fortified
39:34
or
39:34
whatever,
39:35
I
39:35
see
39:35
some
39:36
really
39:36
questionable
39:37
installations
39:38
in
39:38
flashing.
39:39
The
39:39
concept
39:40
of
39:40
flashing,
39:41
I
39:41
don't
39:41
know
39:41
how
39:41
we
39:42
are
39:42
still
39:43
so
39:43
far
39:43
behind
39:43
the
39:43
curve,
39:45
I'm
39:45
telling
39:45
you,
39:46
but
39:46
making
39:46
sure
39:47
that
39:47
the
39:47
openings
39:47
get
39:48
set
39:48
correctly,
39:49
make
39:49
sure
39:49
that
39:49
you're
39:50
layering
39:50
your
39:50
drainage
39:51
plane,
39:51
your
39:51
house
39:51
wrap
39:52
or
39:52
whatever
39:52
features
39:53
that
39:53
you're
39:53
using
39:53
to
39:54
create
39:54
that
39:54
secondary
39:55
drainage
39:55
plane.
39:56
And
39:56
then
39:57
there's
39:57
so
39:57
many
39:57
great
39:58
products
39:58
in
39:58
terms
39:58
of
39:58
flashing
39:59
tapes
39:59
that
39:59
are
39:59
out
40:00
there
40:00
that
40:00
are
40:00
specifically
40:01
designed
40:01
to
40:01
be
40:01
on
40:02
the
40:02
wall.
40:02
And
40:02
in
40:02
those
40:02
window
40:03
openings
40:03
in
40:03
particular,
40:04
there's
40:05
just
40:05
a,
40:05
there's
40:05
a
40:05
lot
40:06
of
40:06
technology,
40:06
A
40:06
lot
40:06
of
40:07
innovation
40:07
has
40:07
happened
40:07
in
40:07
that
40:08
space
40:08
to
40:08
make
40:08
our
40:08
jobs
40:09
as
40:09
builders
40:10
way
40:10
easier
40:11
on
40:11
that
40:11
front.
40:12
But
40:13
what
40:13
really
40:14
it
40:14
comes
40:14
down
40:14
to
40:14
is
40:15
devil's
40:15
in
40:15
the
40:15
details.
40:15
You've
40:16
got
40:16
to
40:16
pay
40:16
attention
40:16
to
40:16
details,
40:18
Fred.
40:18
It's
40:18
funny,
40:19
when
40:19
I
40:19
tell
40:19
people
40:19
in
40:19
the
40:20
shopping
40:20
for
40:20
windows,
40:20
they're
40:21
like,
40:21
okay,
40:21
what
40:21
should
40:21
I
40:22
look
40:22
for?
40:22
I
40:22
said,
40:22
one
40:22
of
40:22
the
40:22
first
40:23
questions
40:23
I
40:23
want
40:23
you
40:23
to
40:24
ask
40:24
your
40:24
installer
40:24
is
40:25
what
40:25
brand
40:26
of
40:26
flashing
40:26
they're
40:27
using.
40:27
And
40:27
I
40:28
want
40:28
to
40:28
see
40:28
there
40:28
with
40:28
the
40:29
window
40:29
specs
40:29
in
40:29
your
40:30
contract.
40:30
But
40:31
they're
40:31
going
40:31
to
40:31
be
40:31
following
40:31
that
40:32
brand's
40:32
best
40:33
practices
40:33
on
40:33
flashing
40:34
that
40:34
window
40:34
correctly.
40:35
Because
40:35
I
40:36
can't
40:36
tell
40:36
you
40:36
how
40:36
many
40:37
times
40:37
I'm
40:38
walking
40:38
the
40:38
dog
40:38
in
40:38
the
40:38
neighborhood
40:39
and
40:39
I'm
40:39
like,
40:40
wow,
40:40
that's
40:40
beautifully
40:41
done.
40:41
And
40:41
then
40:42
four
40:42
houses
40:42
down
40:43
I'm
40:43
like,
40:44
somebody
40:44
missed
40:44
flashing
40:45
day.
40:46
Yeah,
40:46
no
40:46
kidding.
40:47
You
40:47
hit
40:47
another
40:48
really
40:49
good
40:49
point
40:49
there.
40:49
And
40:49
that
40:50
is
40:50
manufacturers
40:51
put
40:51
a
40:51
lot
40:52
of
40:52
time
40:52
and
40:52
energy
40:53
into
40:53
figuring
40:53
out
40:54
how
40:54
to
40:54
make
40:54
sure
40:55
they're
40:55
putting
40:55
product
40:55
will
40:56
perform
40:56
the
40:56
function
40:57
is
40:57
designed
40:57
to
40:57
perform.
40:58
And
40:58
they
40:58
put
40:58
out
40:59
lots
40:59
of
40:59
details.
41:00
And
41:01
if
41:01
you
41:02
follow
41:02
those
41:02
details,
41:03
you're
41:04
going
41:04
to
41:04
get
41:04
a
41:04
great
41:04
performing
41:05
product
41:05
in
41:05
the
41:05
majority
41:06
of
41:06
cases.
41:07
So
41:07
all
41:07
the
41:08
hard
41:08
work
41:08
of
41:09
figuring
41:09
out
41:09
how
41:10
do
41:10
I
41:10
install
41:10
this
41:10
product?
41:11
It's
41:11
all
41:11
there.
41:12
You
41:12
just
41:12
got
41:13
to
41:13
be
41:13
able
41:13
to
41:14
be
41:14
committed,
41:15
right?
41:16
You
41:16
got
41:16
to
41:16
be
41:16
intentional.
41:17
And
41:17
when
41:17
we
41:17
talk
41:18
about
41:18
resilience
41:18
as
41:18
a
41:19
whole,
41:19
as
41:19
a
41:19
building
41:20
industry,
41:21
we
41:21
really
41:21
have
41:22
to
41:22
be
41:22
in
41:22
order
41:22
for
41:23
us
41:23
to
41:24
make
41:24
the
41:24
building
41:24
environment
41:25
and
41:26
our
41:26
building
41:26
stock
41:27
more
41:27
resilient,
41:28
we
41:28
as
41:28
building
41:29
professionals
41:30
need
41:30
to
41:30
be
41:30
intentional.
41:31
We
41:31
have
41:31
to
41:31
make
41:32
a
41:32
conscious
41:32
choice
41:33
that
41:33
we're
41:34
not
41:34
going
41:35
to
41:35
just
41:35
follow
41:35
the
41:36
code,
41:36
which
41:36
is
41:37
the
41:37
legal
41:38
limit,
41:39
right?
41:39
The
41:39
minimum
41:40
limit
41:40
you
41:40
can
41:40
build
41:41
to.
41:41
But
41:41
if
41:42
we
41:42
want
41:42
to
41:42
really
41:43
deliver
41:43
that
41:44
Shelter
41:44
that's
41:44
going
41:44
to
41:45
last
41:45
a
41:45
lifetime
41:46
for
41:46
our
41:47
customer
41:47
and
41:48
potentially
41:48
generationally,
41:49
which
41:49
over
41:50
in
41:50
Europe
41:50
we've
41:50
seen
41:50
that
41:51
done
41:51
for
41:51
hundreds
41:52
of
41:52
years
41:52
at
41:52
generational
41:53
housing.
41:53
If
41:54
we
41:54
want
41:54
to
41:54
do
41:54
that,
41:55
we
41:55
have
41:55
to
41:55
really
41:56
be
41:56
making
41:56
decisions
41:57
that
41:57
are
41:57
going
41:57
to
41:57
lead
41:58
to
41:59
preventing
42:00
simple
42:01
stuff
42:01
like
42:01
water.
42:02
And
42:03
Fred,
42:04
I
42:04
want
42:04
to
42:04
say
42:04
this
42:04
just
42:04
so
42:05
people
42:05
can
42:05
really
42:05
have
42:06
it
42:06
sink
42:06
in
42:06
and
42:06
you
42:06
touched
42:07
on
42:07
it.
42:07
I
42:07
just
42:07
want
42:08
to
42:08
make
42:08
sure
42:08
and
42:08
put
42:08
an
42:08
exclamation
42:09
point
42:09
on
42:09
the
42:09
end
42:09
of
42:10
this.
42:10
When
42:10
I'm
42:11
looking
42:11
at
42:11
windows,
42:12
siding,
42:14
indoors
42:15
and
42:15
actually
42:15
roofing,
42:16
if
42:16
I
42:16
want
42:16
to
42:16
put
42:17
that
42:17
on
42:17
there,
42:18
60%
42:19
of
42:19
the
42:19
performance
42:20
is
42:20
in
42:20
the
42:21
person
42:21
putting
42:21
it
42:21
in.
42:23
There's
42:23
some,
42:23
there's
42:23
a
42:23
lot
42:24
of
42:24
truth
42:24
to
42:24
that
42:24
in
42:24
a
42:24
lot
42:25
of
42:25
products.
42:25
There
42:26
are
42:26
some
42:26
products
42:26
that
42:27
have
42:27
some
42:27
built
42:28
in
42:28
vulnerabilities
42:29
and
42:29
we
42:29
may
42:29
have
42:29
some
42:29
more
42:29
to
42:30
say
42:30
about
42:30
that
42:30
later
42:30
this
42:31
year.
42:31
Keep
42:31
a.
42:32
If
42:32
you're
42:32
listening
42:33
to
42:33
this
42:33
show
42:33
and
42:33
you're
42:34
interested
42:35
in
42:35
the
42:35
kinds
42:35
of
42:35
things
42:35
that
42:35
we're
42:35
talking
42:36
about,
42:36
keep
42:36
an
42:36
eye
42:36
on
42:36
ibhs.org
42:38
keep
42:38
an
42:38
eye
42:38
on
42:38
Fortified
42:39
Home
42:40
and
42:40
and
42:41
we
42:41
share
42:41
all
42:42
of
42:42
our
42:42
information
42:43
for
42:43
the
42:43
most
42:43
part
42:44
for
42:44
free.
42:45
And
42:45
we
42:45
will,
42:46
we'll
42:46
share
42:47
some
42:47
stuff
42:47
later
42:48
this
42:48
year
42:48
about
42:48
what
42:49
we
42:49
were
42:49
learning
42:49
about
42:50
different
42:50
kinds
42:51
of
42:51
roofing
42:51
materials
42:52
and
42:52
different
42:52
expectations
42:53
people
42:53
might
42:54
want
42:54
to
42:54
have.
42:54
But
42:55
yeah,
42:55
more
42:55
to
42:55
come
42:55
on
42:56
that
42:56
later.
42:57
Excellent,
42:57
Ben,
42:58
excellent.
42:59
We're
42:59
starting
42:59
to
42:59
run
42:59
out
43:00
of
43:00
time
43:00
here.
43:00
I
43:00
want
43:01
to
43:01
put
43:01
a
43:01
nice
43:01
bow
43:01
around
43:02
this.
43:02
If
43:03
people
43:03
are
43:03
thinking
43:04
about
43:04
building
43:04
a
43:05
home,
43:05
what's
43:05
their
43:05
first
43:06
steps
43:06
to
43:06
be
43:06
working
43:07
with
43:07
you
43:07
guys?
43:07
Yeah.
43:08
First
43:08
thing
43:08
they
43:08
want
43:08
to
43:08
do
43:09
is
43:09
go
43:09
to
43:09
fortifiedhome.org
43:11
and
43:11
take
43:11
a
43:11
look
43:11
at
43:12
the
43:12
standard.
43:12
And
43:12
if
43:13
you're
43:13
working
43:13
in
43:13
a
43:13
design
43:14
phase
43:14
or
43:14
you're
43:15
interviewing
43:15
contractors,
43:16
take
43:16
the
43:17
standard
43:17
and
43:17
ask
43:17
them
43:18
to
43:18
take
43:18
a
43:18
look
43:18
at
43:18
it
43:18
and
43:19
tell
43:19
you
43:19
what
43:19
do
43:19
they
43:20
currently
43:20
do.
43:20
And
43:21
you
43:21
need
43:21
to
43:22
tell
43:22
them,
43:22
hey,
43:23
this
43:23
is
43:23
what
43:23
else
43:24
I
43:24
would
43:24
like
43:24
you
43:24
to
43:24
do.
43:25
And
43:25
the
43:25
other
43:25
thing
43:25
that
43:26
they
43:26
need
43:26
to
43:26
do,
43:26
the
43:27
1B
43:27
step,
43:28
1B
43:28
in
43:28
the
43:28
process
43:29
is
43:29
we
43:29
have
43:29
a
43:30
free
43:30
provider
43:31
network
43:31
directory
43:32
and
43:33
you
43:33
can
43:33
click
43:33
on
43:33
that
43:34
and
43:34
find
43:34
a
43:34
professional
43:35
in
43:35
your
43:35
area,
43:35
particularly
43:36
the
43:36
fortified
43:36
evaluator.
43:37
That's
43:37
your
43:37
partner,
43:38
that's
43:38
who's
43:38
going
43:38
to
43:38
document
43:39
your
43:39
project.
43:40
And
43:40
you
43:40
want
43:40
to
43:40
find
43:41
one
43:41
of
43:41
those
43:41
really
43:42
early
43:42
in
43:42
the
43:42
process
43:43
because
43:43
they
43:43
can
43:43
help
43:43
you
43:44
understand
43:45
what's
43:45
going
43:45
to
43:45
be
43:45
required
43:46
and
43:46
how
43:46
we
43:46
need
43:47
to
43:47
document
43:47
it.
43:47
And
43:48
if
43:48
you're
43:48
in
43:48
a
43:48
Wildfire
43:49
zone,
43:49
does
43:49
the
43:49
same
43:50
rules
43:50
apply?
43:51
Yeah.
43:51
So
43:51
out
43:51
in
43:52
California,
43:52
the
43:52
Wildfire
43:53
prepared.
43:53
We
43:53
have
43:53
a
43:53
really
43:54
cool
43:54
website
43:54
out
43:54
there.
43:55
Wildfireprepared.org
43:57
and
43:57
you
43:57
can
43:58
again
43:58
find
43:59
there's
43:59
a
43:59
really
44:00
clear
44:00
set
44:00
of
44:00
instructions
44:01
on
44:01
how
44:01
to
44:01
start
44:02
that
44:02
process
44:03
and
44:03
get
44:04
an
44:04
inspection
44:04
done,
44:04
particularly
44:05
if
44:05
you're
44:06
in
44:06
an
44:06
existing
44:06
home.
44:08
But
44:08
the
44:08
standard
44:09
is
44:09
up
44:09
there
44:09
for
44:09
anybody
44:10
to
44:10
see.
44:10
It's
44:11
a
44:11
free
44:11
download.
44:12
That
44:13
is
44:13
awesome
44:13
because
44:14
it
44:14
doesn't
44:14
matter
44:14
if
44:14
you're
44:15
taking
44:15
on
44:15
a
44:15
small
44:15
remodel
44:16
project
44:16
or
44:17
building
44:17
a
44:17
new
44:17
home.
44:17
This
44:17
is
44:18
important
44:18
stuff
44:18
that
44:19
can
44:19
one
44:20
save
44:20
you
44:20
a
44:20
bunch
44:20
of
44:21
time
44:21
and
44:21
money
44:21
and
44:22
a
44:22
little
44:22
peace
44:22
of
44:22
mind
44:23
along
44:23
the
44:23
way?
44:24
Yeah,
44:24
more
44:24
than
44:25
a
44:25
little
44:25
peace
44:25
of
44:25
mind.
44:26
It
44:26
can
44:26
give
44:26
you
44:26
a
44:26
lot
44:26
of
44:26
back
44:27
of
44:27
mind.
44:28
Absolutely.
44:29
Hey
44:30
Fred,
44:30
thanks
44:30
for
44:31
coming
44:31
on
44:31
today.
44:31
Let's
44:31
hit
44:31
your
44:32
website
44:32
one
44:32
more
44:32
time
44:33
so
44:33
people
44:33
can
44:33
find
44:33
that
44:34
and
44:34
do
44:34
their
44:34
own
44:34
research
44:35
and
44:35
get
44:36
educated
44:36
on
44:36
the
44:36
the
44:36
process.
44:37
Yeah.
44:37
So
44:37
two
44:37
important
44:38
websites.
44:38
Ibhs.org
44:40
take
44:40
a
44:40
look
44:40
at
44:40
our
44:40
thunderstorm
44:41
ready
44:41
guides
44:42
for
44:42
homes
44:43
and
44:43
commercial
44:43
businesses.
