- 0:00Hey guys, this is friendly. Welcome back to the podcast in
- 0:04the Stillness. Happy Tuesday.
- 0:07So grateful to be recording. And honestly, this passage we
- 0:12are continuing from yesterday. It's talking about the lawless
- 0:16one in the end times and it can feel a little heavy.
- 0:20There is a lot to talk about on deception and evil, and there
- 0:25are definitely parts that are not fully explained.
- 0:29But as I sat with this, I kept returning to this truth that we
- 0:34are not called to avoid the hard, challenging passages.
- 0:38We're called to understand what God has made clear through them.
- 0:42There are things that only God knows, yes, and that is
- 0:46obviously so intentional, but Scripture also gives us
- 0:50everything that we personally need to live aware, to be
- 0:55grounded and not deceived. So today we're going to be
- 0:58exploring Second Thessalonians chapter 2, verses 5 through 12.
- 1:04And as you listen, as I read this over you guys, I just want
- 1:09to invite you to ask the Lord to reveal something fresh to you
- 1:13through His word this morning. So starting in verse 5, don't
- 1:19you remember that when I was with you, I used to tell you
- 1:22these things? And now you know what is holding
- 1:25him back so that he may be revealed at the proper time.
- 1:30For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work,
- 1:34but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till
- 1:39he is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be
- 1:43revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath
- 1:48of His mouth and destroy by the splendor of His coming.
- 1:52The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how
- 1:56Satan works. He will use all sorts of
- 1:59displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie
- 2:04and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are
- 2:08perishing. They perish because they refuse
- 2:12to love the truth and so be saved.
- 2:15For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they
- 2:20will believe the lie, and so that all will be condemned who
- 2:24have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.
- 2:30OK, so one of the first things that really stood out to me here
- 2:34is Paul's heart. He's not writing to confuse
- 2:39people. He's actually writing because he
- 2:42deeply cares. He doesn't want them to be
- 2:44shaken or deceived. And you also have to think about
- 2:47it. He is a spiritual father to this
- 2:50church and he does not want his kids to walk in confusion.
- 2:57And honestly, it reflects the heart of God we see in Matthew 7
- 3:01verse 11. Jesus says if you then know
- 3:04though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your
- 3:07children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good
- 3:12gifts? So if Paul cares this much as a
- 3:16spiritual father who is still sinful and human, how much more
- 3:21does our perfect heavenly Father care about us knowing the truth?
- 3:26This is not something to just gloss over.
- 3:29This is one of those lock in moments.
- 3:33Because the reality is we are not without access to the truth.
- 3:38We have the word of God. It's been written across
- 3:42generations. It's all pointing to 1 story, 66
- 3:47books, 40 authors. We've seen prophecies fulfilled,
- 3:51and as believers we literally have the spirit of truth at work
- 3:56within us, so we cannot afford to live unaware.
- 4:02And then Paul talks about something being restrained,
- 4:05holding back the full revealing of the lawless. 1 And while
- 4:09scripture does not give one perfectly definitive answer, we
- 4:14see glimpses of what that could include.
- 4:17Or implied authority through government and law, the work of
- 4:23the church, the ministry of the gospel, and the presence of the
- 4:28Holy Spirit. But instead of getting caught up
- 4:31in what exactly it is, I believe that the bigger takeaways this
- 4:36the restraint is not forever. And that can sound intimidating.
- 4:42It did for me. But it does actually carry so
- 4:45much hope because it means that everything is moving according
- 4:50to God's timeline. Nothing is random, nothing is
- 4:55out of control. It says all this happens in its
- 4:59proper time and that is so significant because it's not
- 5:04just for the end times but it's for your personal life too.
- 5:08Y'all. God is not surprised by all that
- 5:12is going down in the world. He is not surprised by what
- 5:15you're walking through, even if it feels chaotic.
- 5:19Romans 828. It says in all things, God works
- 5:24for the good of those who love him.
- 5:27So even when it might feel crazy at times, remember he is still
- 5:32working. He still has a plan.
- 5:36And then we get into this idea of lawlessness.
- 5:39It says the mystery of lawlessness is already at work.
- 5:43And we can see that pretty clearly, I believe, through sin
- 5:47in the world, there is rebellion.
- 5:49There are people just choosing their own way intentionally, but
- 5:56there are still boundaries through laws, through structure,
- 6:00just common decency, a general sense of right and wrong.
- 6:05What this passage though is pointing out is that the
- 6:09fullness of lawlessness is still to come, and part of what that
- 6:15does is reveal something in us, our desperate need for God.
- 6:21Because on our own we cannot fix sin.
- 6:25We cannot make ourselves righteous, spotless or
- 6:28blameless. That is why we need Jesus.
- 6:32As Romans 512 says, sin entered the world through one man, and
- 6:37death through sin. Which leads to a really honest
- 6:41question, Who are you actually following?
- 6:47Is Jesus Lord of your life or are you still sitting in that
- 6:51seat of sin and death? And then right in the middle of
- 6:58all of this, y'all we see the vivid power of Jesus explained.
- 7:04It says he will overthrow the lawless one with the breath of
- 7:08his mouth. Not a battle, not a struggle.
- 7:13It's just his breath that is effortless.
- 7:18That's how powerful he is. And I don't want us to just skim
- 7:22past this, that that same spirit, that same power that
- 7:27raised Christ from the dead, that is has already defeated sin
- 7:34and the lawless one, that power lives in us if you are a
- 7:38believer. And that should shift how we see
- 7:41everything now moving forward. This is where it gets super
- 7:46important deception. This passage, it talks about
- 7:52false signs and wonders. And we need to understand that
- 7:56not everything supernatural is from God.
- 8:00Yes, God performs amazing miracles.
- 8:04We see this all throughout the Gospels that Jesus's ministry,
- 8:08he healed, he restored, and he revealed God's heart through
- 8:13these miracles, and he is still doing miracles today.
- 8:17But the enemy can also produce counterfeits, which is why
- 8:21discernment is crucial. We must ask ourselves, is this
- 8:27pointing me to Jesus? Is this lifting up his name?
- 8:31Is it for His glory or is this something that might be drawing
- 8:36attention to a specific person, a platform, or maybe creating
- 8:41dependence on something other than Jesus?
- 8:44And even for us, if God has given you special spiritual
- 8:48gifts, because we all have unique gifts as believers,
- 8:53whether that is prophecy, gifts of healing, maybe it is a gift
- 8:58of encouragement, but I just want us to remember that gift.
- 9:02It's not about what you can do. It's God's power through you.
- 9:10And then there's this really sobering truth that I want to
- 9:13talk about. It says people are perishing,
- 9:17but they perish because they refuse to love the truth.
- 9:21It's not because truth was not available, but because they did
- 9:25not want it. So God allows them to follow
- 9:28that deception that they have willingly chosen.
- 9:33That's heavy. It's weighty.
- 9:36But the question for us is, do I truly love the truth or do I
- 9:42just love what's comfortable or what I want to hear?
- 9:46Because truth will sometimes correct you.
- 9:50It might even sting, but y'all, that is a lot of the times where
- 9:56the most growth happens. Proverbs 27 verse 6 says wounds
- 10:02from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.
- 10:08And personally, in my own life, there have been moments where a
- 10:12friend has called me out and been like, maybe you should not
- 10:15have said it like that, or this does not align with the truth.
- 10:19And that loving correction, it can hurt, but it leads to life.
- 10:25It leads to freedom. So I just want us to welcome
- 10:30that in and not run from truth. And as we take all this in, we
- 10:38have to anchor ourselves in who God is because if we don't, this
- 10:44passage can certainly feel overwhelming.
- 10:48I don't want this to sound cliche or just be a phrase that
- 10:52you've heard all the time, but God is good, His heart, His
- 10:59character. The definition of good is in the
- 11:04Lord. Psalm 11 verse 7 says for the
- 11:08Lord is righteous, He loves justice, the upright will see
- 11:13his face. He created a good world, but sin
- 11:17entered through humans. He doesn't create evil, but He
- 11:22offers freedom from it. In Matthew 11 verse 28 says come
- 11:28to me and I will give you rest. And one day He will make all
- 11:33things new, all things good. Revelation 21 verse one harps on
- 11:38that. And even now, even in all of the
- 11:42craziness of this world, He is still in control.
- 11:46Like Genesis 50 verse 20 says what you meant for evil against
- 11:51me, God meant for good. So let's not confuse this.
- 11:56God is fully 100% good and God is full power over evil.
- 12:04Let's go ahead and closeout in prayer.
- 12:08Dear Jesus, thank you for the truth of your word, that even
- 12:15when it stretches or challenges us, that we can trust that you
- 12:19are revealing what we need to know.
- 12:22It's for our own good. Would you help us to be people
- 12:27who love truth, who don't flee from it, but receive it
- 12:32willingly and obediently? Would you give us wisdom in a
- 12:38world full of deception? Keep our eyes locked on you,
- 12:43King Jesus. Remind us that you are in
- 12:47control, that your timing is absolutely perfect, and that
- 12:51your power it's greater than anything that we encounter.
- 12:57We give our lives to you again and again every day we choose to
- 13:02deny ourselves, to take up our cross, and to follow You.
- 13:07We want you to be Lord over everything.
- 13:10We love you, Jesus. We ask this all in your name.
- 13:14Amen. OK, well that is today's
- 13:17episode. I pray that even though there's
- 13:21a lot to think about, that the Lord would continue ministering
- 13:25to your heart, revealing new things, and that it would bless
- 13:29you today.
