- 1:35A lot to Jeff Bridges was in Tron brother.
- 1:38Come on, don't play with me like that.
- 1:42Don't do that. Don't 01982.

- 3:35week, the Mexican jungle with Hamilton 86 rum, Sheila Agave
- 3:44liqueur or or Gheit or gate. I don't know what that is.
- 3:49Lemon juice and paycheods bitters.
- 3:55I would drink that. Why not?
- 3:57I would drink it. Little little tahin on the
- 4:00little on the rim. Let's go.
- 4:03Like I was like a Tahin rim. All right, boys.
- 4:05So before we get into the head coach power ratings and, and,
- 4:10and recapping last year what that looked like, I want to talk
- 4:13about Big 12 media days. There was a little bit of a
- 4:16media firestorm that happened yesterday with a couple of
- 4:18different things that were announced.
- 4:20First and foremost, we we cannot be remiss, be remiss if not to
- 4:24mention the Green Monster Energy patches, jersey patches and
- 4:29field logos that will be happening and the Big 12
- 4:32rebranding football and men's and women's basketball this year
- 4:36to Monster Energy Big 12 football and Monster Energy Big
- 4:4012 basketball. And we got confirmation today, I
- 4:44think from Kellis Robinette that the the jersey patches will be
- 4:48green indeed. Thoughts on Monster Energy
- 4:51becoming the entitlement sponsor, the Big 12, and
- 4:54thoughts on the peripheral things that come with that, the
- 4:57jersey patches, field sponsors, and everything in between.
- 5:00So the OK, so the university can also have its own patch that
- 5:06goes outside of that because I know there's a couple
- 5:09universities that have patches that are already going to be in
- 5:12use. So is it double patched up or we
- 5:15going patched up? We're going, oh man, this is.
- 5:18The Jayhawks are going crypto and Kyle at the same time.
- 5:22OK. And I mean, I really wish, I
- 5:25really wish that everybody's wasn't green.
- 5:28Yeah. How idiot?
- 5:30It's going to look weird on the Baylor uniform when they wear
- 5:32their green and yellows. Like, that's just going to look
- 5:35strange, right? I mean, I was thinking it was
- 5:37going to look on. I thought it was going to look
- 5:39strange on everybody but Baylor. That's honestly what I was I was
- 5:43thinking. That but him well.
- 5:44Yeah, I I, I don't know if I'm a fan of it, but you know, money
- 5:48is money. It's honestly, I'm not going to
- 5:51be looking too deep into it. You know, patches be patching
- 5:55and I'll be watching from ATV monitor.
- 5:59So I don't think I'll notice all that much when it's third down
- 6:02and six on a big drive to go up 14 on Texas or who we playing
- 6:09this year. Let's go Kansas.
- 6:13Wow. I mean, it's going to look
- 6:17really dumb, you know, Like, I wish there could be some
- 6:21creativity with it. Doesn't have to be green.
- 6:25Like fast is that install going to be for the football fields by
- 6:29the way? Like I mean I don't think it'll
- 6:32be a problem. I think they can put down turf
- 6:34and logos. No, no issue.
- 6:36It just hacked 12 schools. They they did their installs
- 6:39pretty damn quickly after July 1st hit a couple years ago.
- 6:42Yeah. All right, Matt knows.
- 6:46Matt knows that this is going to look silly and you know.
- 6:50Look, I'm all about image and look.
- 6:55Just have a purple lamb come out with AK State logoed monster
- 7:00beverage. Every Big 12 school gets their
- 7:02own beverage. I mean.
- 7:05It's like Rev Honey. Yeah, I mean, not every can of
- 7:09monster is green though. That's what I that's what I'm
- 7:12also wondering. Like why can't they have the
- 7:15alternate color patches? Because I'm I'm pretty sure they
- 7:17have the as many monster flavors as there are.
- 7:20There are definitely the rainbow of assorted M's that could go
- 7:24down. Here's the deal though.
- 7:26This is, This is like a dream come true for Matt and I, our
- 7:29friend Hayden Coons, the pride of Slidell, LA, former former
- 7:33Monster Energy Rep, fellow Delta Sig, brother of ours.
- 7:38That dude was handing out monsters before every single
- 7:40party and at every single party that was thrown in college.
- 7:44This is like, this has to be I, I'm gonna shoot him a text after
- 7:47this. This has to be like a dream come
- 7:49true for him. Not have been his work.
- 7:51It might have been. It might have been.
- 7:52Yeah, might have. Been, you know, he might have
- 7:54brokered this, He might have brokered this.
- 7:56What is it, a $16,000,000 deal? I don't know how big the deal
- 8:00was. We're getting $1,000,000 for
- 8:02this. Yeah, that's not that big of a
- 8:03deal. That's the other $1,000,000.
- 8:07That's the other thing I I forgot which national guy
- 8:09tweeted it might have been like Tom Fornelli or someone but he
- 8:12someone said like wait, so every school only gets $1,000,000?
- 8:16I feel like $20 million to sell the name of your conference to
- 8:20Monster Energy is just not enough.
- 8:21That's not enough. I mean, but realistically, yeah,
- 8:27you're selling it, but who really cares?
- 8:29Like it's it's 20, it's free $20 million.
- 8:33I mean I'm just curious were there not Monster has to do or
- 8:37they're probably they're? Probably bigger, bigger pockets.
- 8:41Maybe, but like Monster has to, I'm going to I'm going to assume
- 8:46Monster has to do all the branding they have to approve.
- 8:50They probably have to. Well, I mean if they sold the
- 8:52name, right. So I mean, does Monster have to
- 8:54approve anything? I don't know what they do.
- 8:58I just you know, I think it's just free money at this point,
- 9:01but it lets you know, it kind of gives the little symbol the
- 9:05signal. Big 12 Strat for cash brother,
- 9:08we are Strat. Trucks Truck Stop 12.
- 9:12Let's go. It would have been nice.
- 9:14It would have been nice to be just.
- 9:16In the words of big Daddy, your mark, we've never been greater
- 9:19than 12. That's misquoting him.
- 9:22We're strong. We're we're 16 strong and
- 9:24growing stronger. Speaking of I I got to talk
- 9:28about tortilla guy from Red Raider nation doing the the
- 9:35whole Texas Tech trying to trying to do a mic drop moment
- 9:38on on commissioner. Your mark basically the the
- 9:42exchange that happened was this guy starts referencing, you
- 9:46know, 2012 Oklahoma State had their paddles.
- 9:48They had to get a special exemption from the conference
- 9:52for noisemakers and he's somehow drawing a correlation between
- 9:56that and then the tortillas not being able to be thrown on the
- 9:58field. He says a couple of other
- 10:01things, but it's just like the the Cincinnati investigate.
- 10:05Like they're not investigating Cincinnati, but they haven't
- 10:07dropped a lawsuit against Texas Tech, Although today the news
- 10:10dropped that the NCAA is investigating Cincinnati.
- 10:12So it just it felt like crocodile tears to me.
- 10:15But did you see the the tortilla quote?
- 10:19And what did you think of the exchange when your mark then
- 10:23said stand up, ask your question again, and then I'll give you
- 10:26the answer I want to give you. Where do we begin?
- 10:32Where do we begin? I mean, I it was kind of
- 10:36embarrassing like it was, it was kind of embarrassing as an
- 10:39outsider, like the question. The question seems like 2 guys
- 10:44behind them, just like rubbing their eyes.
- 10:46What are we doing? I don't understand why everybody
- 10:50feels like they have to be like Cody Campbell.
- 10:53You know, they just have to be like talking and talking and
- 10:57talking. And immediately like Brett
- 11:01Normark's response, I also thought wasn't very good.
- 11:04I mean, you, he was obviously getting handed this question
- 11:12very pointedly. And the the thing about it is I
- 11:17understand like the unity aspect of needing all these schools to
- 11:20be together because from a conference perspective, it's
- 11:23important that everybody's on the same page with what's going
- 11:25on. But Texas Tech has really become
- 11:30almost kind of with the sores be thing, but also just in general
- 11:33with Cody Campbell, they've just become very annoying.
- 11:37Like they they they they have become very annoying because I
- 11:42think they they believe that, OK, we had one really good year
- 11:45in football. We made it to the College
- 11:48Football Playoff that ultimately, OK, we're the king
- 11:50in the conference this and that. Like, yeah, you're not like
- 11:56you're not. And having your media ask a
- 12:01question like that is just so embarrassing for, for Texas
- 12:05Tech. And, and they've, they've just
- 12:10become a, a, a school in this conference that has, I feel like
- 12:16rubbed a lot of people the wrong way with how they've been acting
- 12:18about all these different things.
- 12:20And now it's at a point where like, I don't necessarily like
- 12:23them. I don't care if they like K
- 12:25State, but I, I just, you have people that are just acting very
- 12:31childish about all these different things.
- 12:33And at the end of the day, I don't feel sorry for anything
- 12:37that has happened at Texas Tech. I don't feel sorry about your
- 12:41tortilla situation. You know, I however that
- 12:45happened, you know, it's just unfortunate.
- 12:48Like you just have media that are acting childish and it makes
- 12:52you look bad. You know, you may not think it
- 12:54if you're a Texas Tech fan, but it makes you look bad.
- 12:57Yeah, I mean it realistically it they are turned off of one
- 13:00season, a really good season behind you.
- 13:02They, I mean, they are a really good football team.
- 13:05And some would say that they're they're anointment at the top of
- 13:09the conference is valid because we all would say that they are
- 13:13the most talented team. They are the most financially
- 13:16stable team in the Big 12. And the issue is that they are
- 13:21turning themselves into the Texas of what Texas used to be
- 13:26of the old Big 12 and how they they thought they were validated
- 13:30and they could say whatever they want after.
- 13:33You know, they Texas had really before they were talking crazy,
- 13:39they were talking off of those Mack Brown national championship
- 13:42appearances and wins and and it just kept going.
- 13:47And this is kind of just a hyper speed version of what Texas had
- 13:53become in the Big 12 where they thought they were the top dog.
- 13:56And they can kind of just cry about anything, say that we were
- 14:00going to take our ball and go. And you saw it throughout the
- 14:03whole soresby situation that they're going to take their ball
- 14:06and they're going to go. If you don't, you don't treat us
- 14:09the way we want to be treated. They think they're above all
- 14:12this. And I think they they think it's
- 14:15injustice, but it's all justified because what you did
- 14:18was wrong. But the reason why they feel
- 14:20that way is because they had a really good season and they have
- 14:22a really good football team currently.
- 14:24So really the only way to get them back into the place where
- 14:29they belong is really two things.
- 14:32The money dries up, which I don't think that's going to
- 14:34happen. Or two, they have an 8 and four
- 14:37season and we just they punch him in the face and the Big 12
- 14:42puts him through the ringer. And that's going to have to be
- 14:45proven on the football field. But that's that's how you got
- 14:48Texas to not be so Texas Y uppity some of the times is you
- 14:53got to stomp them on the football field.
- 14:55Yeah, it's, it's to me, it's a combination of what Texas was
- 15:01probably the last four years in the conference, three years in
- 15:04the conference. And then when they were good
- 15:06with Mack Brown, because in 20 tens they were at least self
- 15:09deprecating. Like they were bad and they knew
- 15:11it and they were, you know, they would make jokes at their own
- 15:13expense. Like I've got a buddy who I when
- 15:16I was living in Austin, I got a buddy who would just be, he
- 15:18would bet on Texas to lose every game.
- 15:20So he would at least make money every time they lost.
- 15:23And it like they, they have that self deprecated.
- 15:26To me, it's a combination of the like the, the insufferable Texas
- 15:31fans and the insufferable Aggie fans and all the worst things
- 15:35about A&M fans combined into one because Texas at least had a leg
- 15:40to stand on. They had the championship and
- 15:42the, the, the history and the, you know, that aura of being a,
- 15:46a blue blood program. A&M hasn't done Jack shit.
- 15:49They they haven't won a conference title since 1998,
- 15:53which I don't need to bring that up from AK State perspective,
- 15:55but like they had to go and add national titles to their stadium
- 16:01to make themselves feel better when they did that renovation in
- 16:042012 after Johnny Manziel built the new Kyle Field with all of
- 16:08the money that he didn't make on his own success.
- 16:11So to me it's it's this like tech has literally no leg to
- 16:15stand on here. They I don't think they've ever
- 16:17won a national title in football.
- 16:19I mean. They have.
- 16:20They've won really good. One conference title in the
- 16:23entire time they've been in the Big 12 in football.
- 16:25Like at least give me something here.
- 16:28Like, come on, you have one. They are a.
- 16:31Really good football team. They are a really good football
- 16:33team. And they're gonna, they're gonna
- 16:34stand by the the era that we're in.
- 16:37They're gonna, if the era doesn't change and the money
- 16:40doesn't dry up, they're gonna be really good for a long time in
- 16:43the Big 12. So it's just they're kind of
- 16:45just getting up a little bit above ahead of their skis.
- 16:48But you know, if I was in the situation, I would, I would
- 16:52cringe at the media doing that. But I mean, that's, that's what
- 16:56frontrunners do. They talk like this.
- 16:58Then I I got it. If if Tex wants to run their
- 17:01mouth, run it. You got to run it because you
- 17:04got to prove it eventually. At least have an articulate
- 17:07media member ask the question if you're going to do it.
- 17:09You look like a goober. As soon as soon as when when
- 17:13when your mark like contested him initially and then he like
- 17:17softened. It was that was very cringe
- 17:20worthy to watch. But anyway, a couple of other
- 17:22things I want to mention in this specific to K State.
- 17:25So with Avery Johnson, Coach Klein, Joe Jackson, Wesley Fair,
- 17:29a lot of these guys were were at media days.
- 17:32Wesley Fair even asked a question to to Colin Klein,
- 17:34which was very funny. I want to dig into specifically
- 17:38some of the things that Avery said.
- 17:39That's that stood out to me through his interviews with KSO
- 17:42as well as KCSN and and the three MA guys.
- 17:47When it when when asked about which position or position group
- 17:50or player he thought was overlooked, he he specifically
- 17:52mentioned the offensive line. That really stood out to me as
- 17:55one of the first things he said. He mentioned John Pastori being,
- 17:59you know, all Big 12 pre season on that list.
- 18:04He mentioned George Fitzpatrick and and didn't he said, I, I
- 18:06can't get myself in trouble here.
- 18:08I don't I don't know what I'm able to say or not able to say,
- 18:11but he did mention that George Fitzpatrick looks like he's in a
- 18:15in a good a good spot for the season, which is encouraging to
- 18:18hear. And that he the other guy that
- 18:21he mentioned was Dylan Villa Villa rule.
- 18:25I'm going to mess up his name. But he was another guy that he
- 18:28mentioned specifically as a guy that seems to have made some
- 18:30significant strides heading into this season.
- 18:33But with with offensive line being a big question mark
- 18:37heading into this season, how reassured are you by Avery's
- 18:41comments specifically mentioning that?
- 18:43Do you think that's just, hey, when the media asks you about a
- 18:47position group that's being overlooked because we get this
- 18:49question every year answer offensive line, do you think
- 18:51it's more of that or you think he's he's being sincere here and
- 18:55that the offensive line maybe isn't as big of a question mark
- 18:58as as we think it could be? I mean, I take a lot of it with
- 19:01a grain of salt because her I remember being in Ireland at the
- 19:05pep rally and hearing this is going to be the most explosive
- 19:08offense what we've ever seen. That's true.
- 19:11I I mean, I think there is some of it from a preparation
- 19:14perspective. You're probably going to get
- 19:15asked this question. You know, I, I'm sure there's
- 19:18some preparation behind it. You know, offensive line, you
- 19:22know, we've talked about it. You know, that is a group that
- 19:24they've brought in new faces and it's having to be rebuilt.
- 19:29And so if you think about, you know, on the offensive side, you
- 19:34only have a handful of position groups you're going to be able
- 19:36to even mention here. Is it reassuring?
- 19:39I mean, it's good that he brought it up.
- 19:42We're going to see Game 1. You know, if that's actually the
- 19:45case. I just, you know, some of the
- 19:47things that that really like pump up a lot about the team and
- 19:51a lot like they're great as a fan to hear.
- 19:55But for me, I, I historically like, I take a lot of it with a
- 20:00grain of salt because if they're not pumping up their team,
- 20:04that's a problem. If they're not pumping up, you
- 20:06know. You know, specific groups on the
- 20:09team, this and that. So, you know, obviously I hope
- 20:12the offensive line, you know, with these new faces and and,
- 20:15you know, hearing George Fitzpatrick, you know,
- 20:18potentially, you know, could be out on the field, which would be
- 20:20great. You know is is is awesome to
- 20:23hear for sure, but I take a little bit with a a grain of
- 20:27salt. I don't know, I, I, I think it's
- 20:31as I'm fighting through this keyboard noise.
- 20:34I mean, it's just absolutely crazy.
- 20:36I mean, that is just rumbling in my ear.
- 20:40I think the, the offensive line when, when they, when position
- 20:44gets get brought up, it's two things.
- 20:46Like Matt said, they could just be have focus points of like
- 20:51where they think that they should be speaking because
- 20:54they're not represented at the Big 12 media day.
- 20:59But I also just in my heart of hearts believe that these guys
- 21:04that they're practicing with every day, they have no reason
- 21:07to lie. First of all, I don't think even
- 21:10if even if they're bad, they're still buddies on the team,
- 21:13they're going to pump them up like Matt said.
- 21:16But we've also had instances where they're telling the truth.
- 21:21Like no one knew who Austin Romain was until media days and
- 21:25everybody brought him up. So if they're telling us that
- 21:30Dylan Villarreal is the a stud and we've seen that he got time
- 21:36as a true freshman last year, maybe he is a starting guard
- 21:40potential, we don't know. But the when you hear these
- 21:43names, these are the guys that I'm looking for now.
- 21:46Now I'm going to be looking to see if who's going to crack that
- 21:49too deep who and if they're mentioning multiple names, like
- 21:53obviously Pastorius solidified left or right tackle for us,
- 21:57depending on who plays where, but he is an all all Big 12
- 22:01caliber talent. And then they're mentioning
- 22:04other names. That means there's depth to the
- 22:07online. I, I, I can't I'm not going to
- 22:09take it not at face value that these guys are just bombs and
- 22:12they're just trying to hype them up to bamboozle the fans for
- 22:16some reason. I don't know why they would want
- 22:17to do that. It's just maybe it is.
- 22:20Maybe it is coach speak through the players, but I I honestly
- 22:23think that they have no reason to say that.
- 22:25I mean, if they say who's the position?
- 22:29Leading questions are also the name of the game when it comes
- 22:33to these media days. The question isn't just like,
- 22:36hey, what do you think of the team?
- 22:37It's what position grew specifically.
- 22:39So they're going to have to say somebody.
- 22:41They're not going to say nobody like Matt said.
- 22:43So I, I'm, I'm going to take it at face value and say, hey, I
- 22:47think our offensive line has some contenders for starters and
- 22:50that's why they are mentioned. Yeah, I thought it was an
- 22:55interesting comment no matter what.
- 22:57OK, looking at a couple of other comments that I had, then we'll
- 23:00get into the the power rankings. He was asked about last year
- 23:05versus this year and in spring ball specifically where his
- 23:09mindset is and and where the team's mindset is in comparison
- 23:12to last year. And one of the specific things
- 23:15he said was we last year had a me, me, me mindset.
- 23:19Some of the guys on the team had a me, me, me mindset and what
- 23:22that led to. He almost made it sound like
- 23:25there are too many individuals, not enough guys playing for the
- 23:30team and playing for K State and the the name on the front of the
- 23:33chest, if you will. And I immediately thought of
- 23:36Dylan Edwards maybe in Austin Romaine, if he, you know, went
- 23:39to go get his bag. Some of the guys that maybe got
- 23:41money with by by some of the other programs out there.
- 23:44But that said a lot to me of just the difference in mentality
- 23:48and what's being talked about from the top down.
- 23:51Coach Klein has made it very clear that he wants guys who are
- 23:56physical, who have an intensity about them, who are here to
- 23:59compete and not compete about, you know, just for them or just
- 24:02to get some money. And that's applying to
- 24:05recruiting as well. But when you hear that
- 24:08difference, when specifically asked about the difference of
- 24:10last year and this year and Avery's responses, me, me, me
- 24:13too many individuals, what is what does that tell you about
- 24:15last year and how does that make you feel about this upcoming
- 24:20season? I mean, I'll take this.
- 24:25So we obviously saw that there was potential and talent on the
- 24:31team last year. We all thought that there was a
- 24:34a potential contender for the Big 12 title.
- 24:37And then to go six and six says a lot.
- 24:39So where where does that fall apart?
- 24:41It has to fall apart of the team because I don't think we lost a
- 24:44lot of games that we were in and it just we just didn't have
- 24:49enough and I maybe we should have saw this coming from the
- 24:52army game. That's a team and a game where
- 24:55if you're not bought in for the game plan and the team, you're
- 24:58going to get pushed around with the wishbone like like we did,
- 25:03like we saw. So I could see where the the me,
- 25:06me, me mindset come from. And obviously there's some
- 25:08players that come to mind and some that got pushed out that we
- 25:12thought that, you know, maybe had a chance to be on the team
- 25:16this season. Man, I really, I'm really hoping
- 25:21that you can take it at face value, just like the position
- 25:23group thing, but you know that that is the quintessential coach
- 25:28speak. So I I'm going to say, hey, like
- 25:32I'm going to believe that this team is more bought in together.
- 25:35Maybe they're not as talented as the previous season or the
- 25:39previous season before that when we're, you know, picked to win
- 25:42the Big 12. But man, I'm, I'm just going to,
- 25:46I'm going to say that this is a going to be a bought in team.
- 25:48And maybe we, because you know, potentially we're in betting
- 25:53odds, we're the 4th best team in the Big 12 by betting odds
- 25:56standards. But I would love to grind out,
- 25:59you know, nine wins. I would love to grind out nine
- 26:02wins and maybe go for a little bit more if, if the momentum
- 26:06from a team is there. So I, I, I'm going to take it at
- 26:10face value, man, I'm Avery Johnson is maybe he's got a
- 26:14future in coaching. I don't know.
- 26:18Interesting. Yeah, I, you know, some of the
- 26:20comments were very interesting, you know, talking about, you
- 26:24know, some of the things that happened last year.
- 26:27You know, again, I go back to kind of what I said a little bit
- 26:30ago. I take, I just take a lot of it
- 26:32with a grain of salt. And, you know, the biggest thing
- 26:37this year, I think for me is what does the product look like
- 26:43on the field early on? And that's going to really give
- 26:47you a little bit of the an idea of what the mindset maybe has
- 26:51been since the spring and what they're trying to build and
- 26:55achieve, because this could be a team right now that does look
- 26:59very good. The culture is different.
- 27:01You know, the mindset is a lot more positive with what the
- 27:06season's going to bring. But when you truly get the the
- 27:09team out there and you're competing, that's where you're
- 27:12really going to see, you know, maybe how some of those
- 27:15comments, you know, are actually looking.
- 27:17So I, I did like, you know, a particular comment that I heard
- 27:22about Avery and kind of thinking about last year and, you know,
- 27:25even the year before, you know, potentially the opportunity to
- 27:29be doing more running, maybe getting back a little bit to
- 27:33some of, you know, the stuff that he was doing freshman year,
- 27:36which is a little bit more, you know, instinct based.
- 27:41So that is the type of stuff that, you know, some of those
- 27:43comments where I think we all kind of expected some of those
- 27:48comments to come because Avery Johnson decided to stay when
- 27:52Colin Klein became the coach of hey, you know, bringing some of
- 27:56that mindset from three years ago when he was the offensive
- 27:59coordinator here. But I my mindset for the season
- 28:04hasn't necessarily changed. Maybe it will as it gets closer
- 28:07to the fall. You said nine wins.
- 28:09I'm like, if this, you know, if you have a first time head
- 28:12coach, you are rebuilding basically you're a good portion
- 28:16of your defense. You know, the offense, you're
- 28:20putting your own, you know, kind of fingerprint on the offense.
- 28:24I think eight wins. I mean, I I think eight wins.
- 28:27You know, this is a team that, yes, should be going to a bowl
- 28:29game. You know what, I'd be
- 28:31disappointed with six and six probably.
- 28:34But, you know, I think this is a team that can go 8 and 4.
- 28:38You know, nine wins, I think is a totally inappropriate, you
- 28:40know, number that you said because there's just so much
- 28:45change. It it's mostly the nine win
- 28:49number for me. Obviously Vegas, they put out
- 28:53their numbers and I think they have a mindset of who are we
- 28:57going against on this schedule? Realistically, we should mop the
- 29:02mop the floor with the out of conference.
- 29:05It's it's not set up like last year where you've got some
- 29:09tricky teams that do some funky things on a funky time of day
- 29:13after a funky travel schedule. It's not that.
- 29:16So you got a just a run-of-the-mill non con where
- 29:20you should win those games at home.
- 29:24Just the schedule is what it is and that's where you don't face
- 29:28the best teams in the Big 12. You have to be able to do
- 29:32something with that, even if it is a first time coach, a guy
- 29:35that's comfortable here, that has been here before should be
- 29:39able to do that and he should know the ropes.
- 29:42It's not like he's traveling out to some university that he's
- 29:45never coached at before. He know he's, he's integrated
- 29:48into this community, into this college and it, it, it should
- 29:52run smoothly in my opinion. That's just how it that's how it
- 29:55should go. Yeah, yeah, the last, the last
- 29:59couple of things, I'll I'll share it.
- 30:01Just talking about another position group, he said this is
- 30:04the deepest wide receiver core he's had since he's been here.
- 30:07I feel like we've had this song and dance in the past.
- 30:10I'm, I'm not going to take too much with this, but the one
- 30:12thing he did say that stood out to me was Brandon White is the
- 30:16guy he mentioned as the hardest one-on-one guy to defend
- 30:20according to how he saw things from spring practice from the QB
- 30:23position. Yeah, that what are your
- 30:26thoughts? What, what do you think the
- 30:27ceiling for Brandon White is this year?
- 30:28Is he what, what, what would you, what would your comp be to
- 30:32a guy that we've had in recently?
- 30:34Recently, I recently I mean Phillip Brooks is what come to
- 30:42mind maybe a little bit God, Phillip Brooks was explosive.
- 30:48I'll I'll say that he was more consistent when he was on the
- 30:51receiving end of things, not so much when it on special teams.
- 30:57He was an absolute animal. He was explosive there.
- 30:59But as a receiver, I feel like he was just kind of in and out,
- 31:04just kind of catches the balls around the nine, you know, 9
- 31:06yards deep and maybe get 11. But I feel like Brandon White,
- 31:11he's so little. And if you look at his tape, I
- 31:15mean, it's just run nine. It's just go straight and just
- 31:19outrun everybody. But if he can, you know, develop
- 31:22some routes where he's in and out of the defense, it's hard to
- 31:25guard somebody that's fast and that's 58.
- 31:28It's hard because you're you're used to playing guys that are
- 31:31626636, you know, somewhere around that 6 foot range where
- 31:36you're adequate size and the disparity to get the the hands
- 31:40on them. Somebody that's 58, that's
- 31:43shifty and that can run that's that's could be dangerous, but
- 31:47he is little. So you got to, you have to take
- 31:49into account that maybe he does get swallowed up.
- 31:52But you know, it's I would say Phillip Brooks is what come to
- 31:56mind. Maybe.
- 31:59What's the one? What's the one kid that damn why
- 32:03am I blanking on the receiver that was with Tyler and he had
- 32:12the one Juke move. Brandon Brandon Banks.
- 32:16Brandon Banks? No, no, not Brandon Banks.
- 32:18What was the Thompson Tremaine Thompson, that's what I that's
- 32:24all the other one that I could think of.
- 32:26Tremaine Thompson. Brandon Banks is actually a
- 32:27really good comp too. But Brandon Banks weighed 107
- 32:31lbs so I don't know. Let me look at this guy's size.
- 32:36How big are you, fella? He can't.
- 32:38I know he's short. I don't know if he's little
- 32:40though. Oh, he did.
- 32:44You're saying he could be stout? In short, he could be.
- 32:48I don't think as a wide receiver that's.
- 32:49I mean, I like when I think of Stout, I think not like he's not
- 32:53fat, but like how Tyreek Hill is built because that's usually how
- 32:56those short, fast guys are built, Is there?
- 32:58It's literally a ball of muscle that just twitch.
- 33:01Let's look it up though. He's got to wear a small number
- 33:04though, right? OK, what?
- 33:06Number Is he wearing all? Right, I'll give you that.
- 33:09That ain't him. That ain't him.
- 33:11Oh, there he is. 5, seven, 168 lbs.
- 33:13He ain't stout. That's a little fella.
- 33:16Yeah, yeah. He's from Archbishop Mohler.
- 33:19Shout out to Cincinnati. OH, let's go.
- 33:22How the hell did he get to? How did he get to Hawaii?
- 33:25All right on on that. Note oh, he's at the University
- 33:28of Kentucky first, OK. Oh yeah, yeah, that's right,
- 33:31that's right. All right, on that note,
- 33:33Heartland Beef Connection Midpod ad ad read.
- 33:37This episode is also brought to you by Heartland Beef Connection
- 33:42folks. We're not talking about grocery
- 33:43store beef. Heartland Beef Connection
- 33:45connects Kansas and Midwest families directly with local
- 33:49ranchers. No middleman, no industrial
- 33:52processing, and no mass produced beef.
- 33:54A lot of these ranchers are located in Kansas and of course,
- 33:57plenty of them are K Staters themselves.
- 34:00Paul, friend of the program, started Heartland Beef
- 34:02Connection to help support Midwest ranchers by matching
- 34:06them directly with families looking to buy a quarter, half
- 34:08or whole beef shares. You know where your beef comes
- 34:11from, how it was raised and who raised it.
- 34:14And here's the part people don't expect.
- 34:16Not only does this beef taste better, but it's cheaper per
- 34:20pound than grocery store beef when you buy direct.
- 34:24Better quality, more transparency, and you aren't
- 34:27paying for the middle man. So if you care about supporting
- 34:30Kansas agriculture, keeping your money local, and eating beef
- 34:33that tastes like beef, this is it.
- 34:36The best part is because you're listening to Cocaine Willie, you
- 34:40can get $25 off your Heartland Beef Connection match fee when
- 34:43you mention the podcast or use promo code CW25.
- 34:48That's promo code CW25. Check out Heartland beef
- 34:53connection at heartlandbeef.net. Real beef, real ranchers, better
- 34:57beef for your money. All right head coaching power
- 35:03rankings, we're going to get into it it's going to be fun I'm
- 35:06excited to do this let's get it so to start, I'm going to share
- 35:11what we had last year and I'm going to share this it's.
- 35:15Going to be. Embarrassing.
- 35:17This box on my screen. It's not good.
- 35:20It's not great. Here's our power ranking from
- 35:23last year, gentlemen. OK.
- 35:26We had Lyman at #1 Campbell at 2, Dillingham at 3.
- 35:32Kalani Sataki. Yeah, two of the four.
- 35:34Three of those are no longer with their schools.
- 35:36Kalani Sataki at 4. Kyle Whittingham at 5, also no
- 35:40longer with his school. Number six, number six, Mike
- 35:43Gundy got fired #7 Dion Sanders went 3:00 and 9:00 last year,
- 35:48tied for eight. Sunny Dykes and Dave Aranda,
- 35:51probably still not too different from where it is this year.
- 35:55Joey McGuire at 10th before he had his dream season this year,
- 36:01Lance lipold #11, Rich Rod at 12, Willie Fritz at 13, Scott
- 36:06Satterfield at 14 and Brent Brennan at 15.
- 36:09And rounding it out, the banner is hiding it.
- 36:11Scott Frost at unanimous 16th. Last year, I think he was the
- 36:16only unanimous pick we had going into this season.
- 36:21Well, I guess first thoughts on the previous year's ranking and
- 36:25where things landed in aggregate for us.
- 36:27We suck. I know those.
- 36:30I know those. I know those Houston burners are
- 36:33on our hands. They were getting on as bad.
- 36:37The saxophones are getting louder, as they say.
- 36:40They were justified. I tell you what.
- 36:43We got to eat some crow on that if they still remember us.
- 36:47Yeah, we were very wrong. We were very wrong on some of
- 36:49that. I, I still stand by Scott Ross
- 36:52and Scott Satterfield not being ranked very highly.
- 36:54I stand by Kleiman and Campbell and Dillingham all being ranked
- 36:59highly, although Kleinman had a rough season last year, Matt
- 37:02Campbell was good enough to get a job at Penn State and Kyle
- 37:07Winningham's now the head coach of Michigan.
- 37:09So it's just, it's funny seeing where some of these guys landed
- 37:12and how we ranked power rankings last year.
- 37:16This year it's, it's interesting.
- 37:18I, I think we had some interesting perspectives on, on
- 37:22each of these. But for, for this year, what I'm
- 37:24going to do is I'm going to start with like the bottom 4IN
- 37:27aggregate and then each of us can talk about where we ranked
- 37:31each of these guys. So in aggregate, rounding out
- 37:35the bottom here, Scott Frost, yet again, 16th place out of 16
- 37:40coming off of a four and eight season at UCF.
- 37:43He is. He was not unanimously 16th of
- 37:46this year. One of us had him ranked 15th.
- 37:50So mad because you're mad because you're the only one that
- 37:53ranks Scott Frost higher than 16th.
- 37:55And we won't spoil who you had at 16th, but why?
- 37:59Why Scott Frost at 15? And not 16 or yeah, I mean, I
- 38:09that's, I feel like that's gonna ruin my 16.
- 38:11I mean, I don't, I think he's his tier in the conference.
- 38:16Coaching is is low in the Big 12.
- 38:19I guess we need to guess what we need to do is is explain what
- 38:24the rankings mean like. To us, like what's?
- 38:29Yeah. Yeah.
- 38:30So I mean, I would think there there's two, I guess there's
- 38:33multiple ways to look at it, but I think you think this is the
- 38:37worst coach in the Big 12 or you think that they've they've
- 38:42accomplished the least in the Big 12.
- 38:47Yeah, that's that's good. I look at it more of I look at
- 38:51accomplishments, maybe not necessarily who's accomplished
- 38:57the least in the Big 12, but I look at it from a career
- 39:00perspective. Yeah, that's how I took my
- 39:05rankings, I and. I guess you could also look at
- 39:09that as a projection is that's kind of where I'm at because
- 39:12when I merged the two things together, it kind of comes out
- 39:16looking like a projection, not necessarily where I think
- 39:19they're going to finish this year, but overall in their
- 39:23career where they're at amongst the peers of 16, if that makes
- 39:30sense. OK.
- 39:31That's where I that's kind of where I got my rankings at.
- 39:34OK, so I took AI took a data drift approach similar to last
- 39:40year, but I I guess I'll show I'll show this other screen that
- 39:44I've got here boy, just just to share the method behind the
- 39:49madness of why I why I did what I did numbers if I pull up,
- 39:55yeah, the numbers are kind of boring though, but I'll just
- 39:57share. I'll just share what I did so
- 39:59the people, so the people know what I did, but it's a little
- 40:01bit. Of a right here.
- 40:03What? How is this?
- 40:05So think about, think about this, think about this.
- 40:08So I've got I've got every career win loss for for every
- 40:13level of football that you've coached, career win percentage,
- 40:16FBS record, your FBS win percentage and then your school
- 40:20win percentage. Then I take into account
- 40:22recency. So I've got your last three
- 40:23years trailing. I've got what you did last year.
- 40:27I've got have you, did you make a bowl game last year?
- 40:29Did you win your bowl game last year?
- 40:31Have you made a power conference title game?
- 40:34Have you won a power conference title?
- 40:36Did you make a New Year's 6? Did you make a CFPI?
- 40:39Got all this stuff on here. Our including your mole record.
- 40:42So are they in order of like what?
- 40:46Like what most important from left to right?
- 40:49No, no, this is just I just got all the stats on here.
- 40:52And then my last one here is I've got a vibe meter on a scale
- 40:55of 0 to 5. Where you at on the vibe meter?
- 40:59So because like as a a coach, like Colin Klein and Eric
- 41:02Morris, they may not have a tremendous history or track
- 41:05record as a head coach. Or if you're Morgan Scally, you
- 41:07have one win all time as a head coach, which throws all the data
- 41:11off. So I've got, I've got all of
- 41:14this waited out and averaged out.
- 41:17And that's how I came up with my baseline for where everybody
- 41:21should be ranked. And then I had, I took some
- 41:23liberty with where I ranked everybody.
- 41:24But I, I put a lot of thought and effort into this.
- 41:28So, you know, if you hate my ranking, you can, you can hate
- 41:32my ranking. That's.
- 41:32OK, no one hates that. I I love the overkill.
- 41:35I absolutely love that. I had most of the data already
- 41:39because last year, but I just had to update some numbers to to
- 41:42be this year to include it. But yeah, OK, so the bottom, the
- 41:46bottom 4 here. But yeah, I, I take that
- 41:48approach. I took the data-driven approach
- 41:50with some additional bias thrown in and, and my vibe meter from
- 41:55zero to five of of how high are the vibes for this coach among
- 41:58their fanbase based on the sentiment I've seen online.
- 42:01So Colin Klein is a 5 out of five on the vibe meter.
- 42:05Yeah, the vibe, the vibe meter definitely is going to skew in
- 42:08the favor of the, you know, the purple that we wear.
- 42:13I require 5 out of five on the vibe meter.
- 42:16My ranking is very similar to the aggregate.
- 42:18I just have Dave Veranda, I think over Rich Rod.
- 42:23I think for me, Dave Veranda, he's not old.
- 42:29That's also that's also if I don't know if age was a factor
- 42:33into your data analytics, but age is important to me.
- 42:36I think Dave Aranda, he's battled off of the hot seat
- 42:40multiple times. So I've got him there and he can
- 42:43recruit a little bit. I think he he he took a flyer on
- 42:47DJ Lagway, which is, you know, his his final hail, Hail Mary of
- 42:53trying to get off of the blistering hot seat in Waco.
- 42:56So I've got Dave Aranda over Rich, Rod Deion Sanders bad,
- 43:01Scott Frost even worse. So yes, that's where I'm.
- 43:04At you had you had Dave Aranda higher than anybody else.
- 43:07Matt, what was your justification for ranking Dave
- 43:09Aranda at 11th? Yeah, he's won a Big 12
- 43:12championship. I got that.
- 43:14I look at that is a an accomplishment.
- 43:17I look at who has accomplished what and you know, he's had a
- 43:22few poor seasons, you know, obviously, but I think the
- 43:28people that I picked after him have not had those
- 43:32accomplishments of winning a big like winning a conference
- 43:35championship. I mean, you know, I So for me
- 43:38that is why I valued. Him.
- 43:42I mean, I had him at 11. It's not like I had him at 4:00.
- 43:45It's I had him at 11. Yeah.
- 43:47But can we talk about who you have at 16 though?
- 43:50Because that one is the the widest variant of all of us.
- 43:53Who do you have? We're we'll, we'll get there.
- 43:56We'll get there because he's he's up here on the list before
- 44:00before we get to that, before we get to the next 4 because I
- 44:03think he'll hold on. Will he fall into the he'll fall
- 44:06into the next 4 here, but Rich Rich Rodriguez Dave Aranda,
- 44:11Deion Sanders Scott Frost we Scott Frost is self-explanatory.
- 44:15Dion really rough season last year, really rough season his
- 44:20first year. The only time he's had a bull
- 44:23berth even was the year that Travis Hunter won the Heisman
- 44:27Trophy. They went nine and three that
- 44:29year. So he's really heavily weighted
- 44:32down on my rankings just because of the low amount of win
- 44:36percentage, low amount of bowl win percentage.
- 44:39Hasn't really done a whole lot else outside of that that 2024
- 44:43season. So he's he's low, but I've got
- 44:46him relatively high on the vibe meter because the vibes in
- 44:50Boulder are ridiculously high right now.
- 44:52And I don't really understand why.
- 44:53But their fans are incredibly excited still because of the
- 44:57some of the coaching changes that happened there, because of
- 44:59the portal guys that they got. They got that Danny Skadero guy
- 45:02from San Jose State or whatever who's I think LED FBS in
- 45:07receiving yards last year. So they're very excited.
- 45:10So again, not my bias, it's just what the numbers told me.
- 45:14Don't argue with the numbers. I've got Dionne at 13th though,
- 45:18so he's not all that much higher than where you all had him.
- 45:22And then Dave Aranda, I just, yes, he has won a Big 12
- 45:26championship. I had him.
- 45:28We had him in aggregate tied for 8th last year with Sonny Dykes.
- 45:31He didn't do much to help his case.
- 45:33I don't think he went five and seven.
- 45:35He missed a bowl game last year. He was, for all intents and
- 45:39purposes, probably going to be fired if his AD didn't get into
- 45:42a scandal on in his own right with, you know, that's just par
- 45:46for the course with Baylor in general when it comes to to
- 45:50anything in their athletics department.
- 45:52There's always going to be a scandal.
- 45:53So I think Dave Aranda when taking the hot seat and the the
- 45:58bad vibes into account, he's pretty low on the totem pole for
- 46:01me. So I've got him ranked 15th
- 46:02overall, which weighed down where Matt had him in his
- 46:06rankings. And then Rich Rod.
- 46:07I just don't know what we've seen enough yet in this Rich
- 46:10Rod, 2 point O similar to Scott Frost.
- 46:13Yes, he did a lot in his first stint there, but they went four
- 46:16and eight last year. He turned over his entire
- 46:19roster. We don't know what that team is
- 46:21going to look like this year. It's going to be very weird.
- 46:23So will he be able to bounce back and bring things back to
- 46:26where, you know, country roads were back in 2006 and seven
- 46:32before he jumped ship and went to Michigan?
- 46:34That I don't know. We'll see, but OK, any other
- 46:38thoughts on the bottom 4 here? So Colin Klein comes in at #12,
- 46:45Scott Satterfield at 11, Jimmy Rogers at #10 and Lance Leipold
- 46:49at #9. Colin Klein is who Matt had
- 46:53ranked 16th. He took the Brett Macburth,
- 46:55Brett Mcmurphy approach and he got a lot of criticism from
- 46:59those of us in Purple about that ranking.
- 47:01So, Matt, defend yourself. I mean, I don't know, I think
- 47:06it's easy for me to put him there because if you, The thing
- 47:11is at least how I kind of did these rankings, if you take the
- 47:16name out of the equation and you look at the career he is I, I
- 47:23mean, he, his accolade, he's he's young, right?
- 47:27Like you take the playing out of the equation.
- 47:30His accolades are as an offensive coordinator.
- 47:33You won a Big 12 championship. Pretty good.
- 47:36Which is pretty good. Not as a head coach and as an
- 47:40offensive coordinator. He went to the College Football
- 47:43Playoff. That's pretty good.
- 47:45Which is fine, that's pretty good.
- 47:46I, I don't disagree with that, but from an accomplishment
- 47:50perspective, I, if I'm ranking head coaches and they're
- 47:56accolades for me, I put him at 16.
- 48:02I'm, I, I, I, I, I don't know. I, I think putting him ahead of
- 48:10other coaches, this is my opinion is unfair because he has
- 48:17not been a head coach and his career as an offensive
- 48:21coordinator is how many years? 5 Like he's had five years as an
- 48:25offensive coordinator. Again, like accolades as an
- 48:29offensive coordinator, like that's great, this and that.
- 48:33I, if how I look at it is OK, these are the statistics.
- 48:38These are the accolades of all these coaches.
- 48:41I'm taking the names out of the equation.
- 48:43If you look at his accolades, I think he's 16th.
- 48:48I don't think there's any chance in hell that that's a valid
- 48:52reason to put him at 16. There's no way one because even
- 48:57at 0 and 0 at is a head coaching rank.
- 49:01Let's say he wins at Nichols. He's one and O isn't that where?
- 49:06Where is that? Who's the dude that's taken over
- 49:09at Morgan Scally? Yeah.
- 49:13Morgan Scally is 1 and O. So you're saying that Colin
- 49:18Klein's career, he can take a jump of three on your rankings
- 49:23just by beating Nichols? And you and you have Scally
- 49:26ranked ahead. I have you. 2 head coaches
- 49:29sitting head coaches with more than one win.
- 49:32So by your logic, shouldn't he be behind Dion?
- 49:35And Morgan Scally? Morgan Scally has been a
- 49:38defensive coordinator at Utah for how many years?
- 49:4114 years. OK.
- 49:42He's been and won how many Rose Bowls?
- 49:45Two or three Rose Bowls. I think like 4 PAC 12
- 49:48championships, yes. I look at that like I think I, I
- 49:53have him at 13 and somehow you, you individuals have him at six
- 49:57and eight like. I have him at 8.
- 50:00I think he's going. Like I said, this is a
- 50:02projection for me, OK? This is a projection.
- 50:05That is why you can't say, oh, I can disagree wholeheartedly with
- 50:09Colin Klein 16 because you are. You take this ranking.
- 50:13But your logic, your logic was that he he hasn't done it as a a
- 50:18head coach. That's the reason why he's got
- 50:23but I've got I've got Scott Frost who was a bomb at he was a
- 50:28bomb. He won at Nebraska at.
- 50:31UCF in his first stint, he won a BCS bowl.
- 50:33Right, that was that was a completely.
- 50:35Different year ago, no that. You can't you.
- 50:39Why can't I? Like I, you can't say, oh, yes,
- 50:44that's a completely different era of football because we have
- 50:46coaches in here that you are going to be using their
- 50:48accolades from potentially that era of football to determine
- 50:52their ranking. Like, yeah, I have Scott Frost
- 50:55at 15 and I look at it as a head coach as he's been a head coach.
- 51:00These are the accolades that he had.
- 51:01He. Can say he's. 15 that's that's
- 51:03incorrect. Like you, you can't just pick
- 51:06and choose. Oh, like these are we We only
- 51:11you know. Count.
- 51:12I've seen what he's done as a as a head coach in recent memory.
- 51:18I I mean, I still I think and again you are looking at this as
- 51:23a projection and if I there. Has to be some.
- 51:26There has to be some in there. Because if, let's say, let's say
- 51:29the whole, let's say, for instance, six of six of the 16
- 51:35teams in the Big 12 flipped over to new OC coordinators as their
- 51:41head coach, those would be your bottom no matter what.
- 51:45Most likely yes. Like if their first time head
- 51:48possible no. I, I mean, if he if, OK, let's
- 51:51say, let's say Joey McGuire leaves for the NFL.
- 51:56But, and this is Texas Tech loaded up with all the money,
- 52:00all the financials, and they hired the hottest OC in the, the
- 52:04country. Obviously you obviously this is
- 52:07a bad example because Morgan Scali's been an old man that,
- 52:11you know, coached at Utah for 100 years and and you've got him
- 52:1613 off of 1 win as a interim head coach.
- 52:20So I guess, I guess if, if you hired the hottest OC in the
- 52:25country that has two national championships and, you know, a
- 52:30couple conference titles and they took over the best program
- 52:33in the, in the Big 12, you'd have them what, top five?
- 52:39No. But why not?
- 52:41You've got you've got him over 2 head coaches and that's just
- 52:44ADC. That's, you know, never made the
- 52:46playoffs, never done any of that stuff.
- 52:49And we let me just let me. Just.
- 52:51I just define something real quick.
- 52:53Let's let's look up the definition of a power ranking.
- 52:57A power ranking is a subjective or data-driven, in my case,
- 53:01data-driven assessment used to evaluate teams or players or
- 53:05coaches based on their current competitive strength, current
- 53:09competitive strength, recent performance and momentum rather
- 53:13than their absolute win loss records.
- 53:16And that's I like I that's fine. I mean, I am not looking at
- 53:20recent win loss records because you look at some of my ranking
- 53:25like that would not necessarily be indicative of that.
- 53:27I'm looking at as a head coach, like this is how I would power
- 53:33rank head coaches in the Big 12. I look at, you know, I look at
- 53:37head coaching experience. I look at accolades as a head
- 53:40coach. I just noticed that you have.
- 53:42Oh well, we haven't got there, but yet you're #7 you're with
- 53:47us. How is this possible?
- 53:52I mean, I so like I'm not I'm not beating around the Bush by
- 53:56saying like, again, if I went and looked and did not have
- 54:01names on the accolades for these coaches and I look at pure, this
- 54:06is what their career has been as a head coach.
- 54:09This that is why I put him at 16.
- 54:12Like that does not mean that I don't think, you know, after one
- 54:16year he is like is going to be better than that.
- 54:21I mean, I I don't know. I just.
- 54:23Take. I think it's unfair.
- 54:25I, I look at, you know, I think putting him in a higher realm,
- 54:32people are doing that because he has tizer case state.
- 54:36He has had a lot of ties in case state.
- 54:39I think I think he's like he is one of the hottest OCS was on
- 54:45the hottest 1 of the hottest OCS on the market I.
- 54:49Think 10:00 and 2:10 and 2:00 last year with the CFP
- 54:52appearance. And I, I think, I think you take
- 54:55that momentum and you look forward to what he's done so far
- 55:00with his roster. I think there's a lot of that
- 55:02goes into power rating, ranking your Big 12 just because that's
- 55:06reason why I have David Randa. I think he's he's been bad in in
- 55:13some instances, but he has the momentum of getting off of the
- 55:17hot seat and he's proven that he can do that.
- 55:20Now. I want to, I don't want to throw
- 55:211 hypothetical and I'll leave Colin Klein out of this and
- 55:25leave Matt alone because I for other than this, I really don't
- 55:28disagree with his rankings all that much.
- 55:33You, you said that the reason why you have Eric Morris where
- 55:37you have him is because he proved whatever he did, he's,
- 55:40he's not really been that good outside of one season at North
- 55:44Texas. But let's say you did not.
- 55:49Talk about Eric Morris at all. But.
- 55:50Not yet, not yet, but we have him.
- 55:52You have him ranked in the exact same spot that you have with us.
- 55:57Let's let's rewind the clock. Let's say we were doing this
- 56:00podcast in 2018. Our boy Chris Kleiman is
- 56:10entering the Big 12 with national championships on his
- 56:14resume. Are you putting him at 16?
- 56:18Why no again? Because he has, he is a head
- 56:22coach and he has won national champions championships in the
- 56:26FCS level. I mean, I like head.
- 56:32Like I look at head coaching. Football is football to you.
- 56:36That is what you're saying, Yeah.
- 56:37I love it. I love it.
- 56:40So I mean, it, look it my me putting him at 16, it people
- 56:48will disagree and I respect like I respect looking at how people
- 56:54will look at a power ranking. Like I respect how people would
- 56:57put together 16. And you put Colin Klein higher
- 57:01based off of the potential that he's shown this and that.
- 57:05And that's fine. I, that's not necessarily how I
- 57:07look at it. I look at it from just from an
- 57:09accolade perspective and going from kind of top to bottom.
- 57:13This is how I see that so. He's moving up throughout the
- 57:17season for you. There's a high if he's not for.
- 57:21Four. No, he's he's not.
- 57:23Moving up, then that's a problem, but.
- 57:26Obviously, yeah, he can't go down.
- 57:28He. Would almost agree with that.
- 57:31But at at July, whatever date it is today, this is how I would
- 57:37see it. And there's a high potential
- 57:39that it would change if we get into October and you know,
- 57:42things adjust. But this is how I love it.
- 57:45I see it today all. Right, All right, so with with
- 57:48that, we've got Klein, Satterfield, Rogers, Leipold
- 57:51from 12:00 to 9:00. Thoughts on Satterfield here?
- 57:55We, we, he had a little bit of a bounce back last year, although
- 57:58he had a relatively weak schedule in the Big 12 last
- 58:02year, we had him ranked at 14th. It wasn't unanimous, but I think
- 58:06it was close. Thoughts on Amar Satterfield
- 58:09landed here. I think we all had him within
- 58:11three spots and and all all of us had him between 9:00 and
- 58:1412:00. So I think that he's pretty
- 58:16appropriately ranked. I think I had him the highest.
- 58:19I think he's been able to prove that he's, you know, he's a mid
- 58:24tier coach. He's mid.
- 58:25He's going to get you about 500 every year.
- 58:29Now he has to be able to prove that he can retain his best
- 58:33players and he obviously wasn't able to do that this past
- 58:37season. We can, let's see what he can do
- 58:41going into another season with a new quarterback.
- 58:44It's going to it's going to be a tall task and I could see him
- 58:48falling down my rankings. But as of right now, I think
- 58:51he's a 500 coach and if you can keep about 500, you're going to
- 58:55stay out of the bottom 4 for me, out of the bottom six really.
- 59:00Yeah, I don't know. I I don't really care about him,
- 59:04so I just kind of put his name down.
- 59:08No, I really wanted to put him lower but.
- 59:14I couldn't, but you couldn't. Had Colin Klein there.
- 59:17So Jim, Jimmy Rogers, Matt and I both had him in 10th.
- 59:22Chef you had you had him in 12th.
- 59:25I don't know him. I don't know, Like you don't
- 59:28care about Scott Satterfield. I literally don't know Jimmy
- 59:31Rodgers. I thought that.
- 59:32Rodgers has won a national championship as a head coach.
- 59:35He. Had.
- 59:36He should be number. He should be #5 for you.
- 59:41Jimmy Rodgers. I thought that was a country
- 59:45singer. That's Kenny Rogers.
- 59:48And it's like the sausage guy with the country singer.
- 59:53Jimmy Dillingham and Kenny Rogers.
- 59:55The sauce? Jimmy Dean.
- 59:57Yeah. Jimmy Dean.
- 59:59Oh. My God.
- 1:00:02Yeah, so, so Jimmy, I have Jimmy at 10th again, just looking at
- 1:00:07his track record, he feels like he fits into this kind of 9th to
- 1:00:1112th if we're looking at power rankings.
- 1:00:13I mean, he's coming off of a dismal season. 6 and 6 is not
- 1:00:16great by any means. If he left his team prior to
- 1:00:19getting a bowl victory, which that Washington State team did
- 1:00:22do, I didn't count that in my data 'cause he wasn't coaching
- 1:00:25the team at that time. So that doesn't count.
- 1:00:27So, yeah, he's, he was six and six last year, but had a great
- 1:00:30track record. Barry Kleimanesque for those
- 1:00:33couple of seasons he was at South Dakota State, I guess
- 1:00:36winning one national championship, but not 7.
- 1:00:39So I'll, I'll give him at least one of those.
- 1:00:40But he's, he's kind of a weird guy.
- 1:00:43I didn't really know where to rank him on the vibe meter
- 1:00:46'cause I haven't seen a ton of excitement from Iowa State.
- 1:00:51I, I haven't, I haven't seen a ton of excitement from Iowa
- 1:00:54State fans for him. The the whole Jamie Pollard
- 1:00:58reached out to him, you know, ahead of while he was coaching
- 1:01:03at South Dakota State that that all was very weird to me.
- 1:01:06So I ranked him. I went ahead and gave him the
- 1:01:08benefit of the doubt. I just I ranked him at like
- 1:01:10middle of the pack, like 2 1/2 three for the vibe meter.
- 1:01:14He's not bad, but not great. But I don't know.
- 1:01:17Lance light pole comes in at 9th on this list.
- 1:01:21He's coming off of again missing a bowl game.
- 1:01:25He went five and seven last year.
- 1:01:27We had him ranked at 11th last year.
- 1:01:29So he actually moved up after a 5 and seven season.
- 1:01:32So I don't know what that means for this year's rankings and the
- 1:01:35coaches we have in here, but I had I had Lance at 12th.
- 1:01:40Chef had Lance at. 11. You yeah, at 11th and Matt, you
- 1:01:45had him highest at 8th. So why?
- 1:01:49Why 8th? I guess.
- 1:01:51It's very tough like the mid, like I would say you're.
- 1:01:55Taking a lot of Wisconsin whitewater into account, yeah,
- 1:01:57it seems like. Like 7-8 and nine.
- 1:02:03It's just, it's, it was, it was very difficult.
- 1:02:07I am putting a lot. I, I obviously I'm putting a lot
- 1:02:10of stock into what he's done outside of KU.
- 1:02:13So he did get him back to a bowl game.
- 1:02:17You know, I think this will be a big, this will be a year.
- 1:02:20If he doesn't have a good year, then I think it's going to be we
- 1:02:24might not see him on this list next year.
- 1:02:26I think this could be the toughest season for him.
- 1:02:29I think. I think it could be too.
- 1:02:32No, JD Six he gone. Yeah, it's going to be.
- 1:02:37It's going to be interesting. No.
- 1:02:40No, it's the other. It's the other guy.
- 1:02:41I can't they're. Going to have a quick guy back
- 1:02:43there, I think. I mean, if he's a gamer, I think
- 1:02:45he can. They can do some things.
- 1:02:47But I think they've got a funky schedule too, man.
- 1:02:51They've got a funky schedule because they go international.
- 1:02:54This game in Week 3, that's going to be for both, for both
- 1:02:59them and Arizona State, that's going to be bizarre.
- 1:03:03Yeah, Funky, funky, funky. It's going to be.
- 1:03:05That's going. To fuck some things up.
- 1:03:08Yeah, I mean, but I could see. I could now, now hear me out.
- 1:03:12I could see KU winning that game.
- 1:03:15Yeah, I mean. Arizona State with a new
- 1:03:18quarterback there. I don't know, I.
- 1:03:20Don't know how good Arizona State's gonna be this year.
- 1:03:22I don't either to be to be honest.
- 1:03:25They're also traveling an extra 2 hours, which I don't know like
- 1:03:276 hours of jet lag versus 8 hours of jet.
- 1:03:29Lag I think they said makes a trend in this difference.
- 1:03:31They're leaving after literally after their Week 2 game or
- 1:03:35flying. Over.
- 1:03:36That sounds awful. That sounds bad.
- 1:03:39That's not a good you're. Doing your You're doing your
- 1:03:41recovery at 50,000 feet on an 8 hour long flight.
- 1:03:44Not great. OK.
- 1:03:46I don't love that. You're you're all of that was
- 1:03:49incorrect, but that's entire statement.
- 1:03:52What do you mean? Flying at 50,000 feet and it's
- 1:03:56not 8 hours to fly to London from Phoenix.
- 1:04:00What is it? It's probably 11 1/2 of 11.
- 1:04:03Oh, it's even longer. Oh yeah.
- 1:04:05What are you flying at 60,000 feet?
- 1:04:07How much higher are you flying? I think it's 40. 1000 planes
- 1:04:10that the highest will fly around 40,000 feet, so yeah.
- 1:04:13OK. Whatever mile hot club baby
- 1:04:15it's. Great.
- 1:04:16It's great. The plane meter says.
- 1:04:20Anyway, anyway, back to what we're talking about, I think.
- 1:04:24OK, the, the, the next tier, so this is the second tier of the
- 1:04:2916. So we've got kind of four tiers
- 1:04:32here, right? There's 4 / 16 / 4 is 4.
- 1:04:35So the next tier 5 through 8, we've got Morgan Scally at 8th,
- 1:04:40Eric Morris at 7th, Brent Brennan at 6th and Sonny Dykes
- 1:04:46at 5th. That's literally my ranking
- 1:04:49right there. That's exactly how I have them.
- 1:04:52As much shit as I gave Morgan Scowley I could, I could see him
- 1:04:57doing all the things that Matt thinks that he can do.
- 1:05:00He's going to bring that same energy that Utah's had forever.
- 1:05:05I mean, he is Utah football. I think they, they thought he
- 1:05:08was a godsend for a long time. So that's why they've kept
- 1:05:10around. He's been head coach and waiting
- 1:05:12for probably as long as he's been there.
- 1:05:16Eric Morris, I actually when I talking with Matt and you about
- 1:05:21this, I don't know why I didn't put him lower.
- 1:05:24He's had one good season. I mean, he's got a good name.
- 1:05:27He's bringing over his people, but I mean, Oklahoma State's
- 1:05:31been bad for a long, long time, for the past.
- 1:05:34But did you know that he was Patrick Mahomes's quarterback
- 1:05:37coach at Texas Tech? OK Oh my God.
- 1:05:41Yeah, he also. He also brought Incarnate Word
- 1:05:44to in the ACS playoff. He also brought Cam Washington
- 1:05:49state. Yeah, I mean, he's he's done.
- 1:05:52He's. Had a deep career and then these
- 1:05:54two right here that I have both 5 and 6.
- 1:05:58Honestly, I was wrong on both of them.
- 1:06:01Sonny Dykes has been constantly proving me wrong.
- 1:06:04I mean, as much as I want to think that he's like in that mid
- 1:06:07tier, like similar to Lance light pole and all that stuff,
- 1:06:10he actually just wins a lot of games.
- 1:06:12Just like constantly he's been it's kind of annoying that he's
- 1:06:17like constantly winning nine games every season.
- 1:06:20And then Brennan, I thought it was going to be a dumpster fire
- 1:06:24after that first season. And I thought that who was the
- 1:06:28Arizona coach, that Finch guy? Jed Finch.
- 1:06:32I think that Jed fish. Jed Fish, I thought that he had
- 1:06:37all of Arizona's magic and I mean, Brendan is kind of just
- 1:06:40doing his thing and he's got a returning quarterback.
- 1:06:42So he probably after when we're doing this next season, he might
- 1:06:47be higher because of what what they can accomplish this season
- 1:06:51and they've got a big schedule. Yeah, Sony Dykes is basically
- 1:06:54averaging like 7:00 and 5:00 every year over the last three
- 1:06:58years. If so, that, that takes out that
- 1:07:00national championship appearance year.
- 1:07:02Yeah, 7:00 and 5:00, eight and four.
- 1:07:04That's, that's what he's been averaging.
- 1:07:05So he's been pretty steady, pretty even keel.
- 1:07:08Like that's not, it's not a bad thing.
- 1:07:10It's kind of what Chris Kleinman was doing the last few years Is,
- 1:07:12is kind of that steady 7:00 and 5:00 to 9:00 and 3:00 on
- 1:07:17average. It's it's kind of where he
- 1:07:18landed. I, I, yeah, I, I didn't think
- 1:07:21Sonny Dykes was going to be very good coach just because his
- 1:07:24track record at Cal and when he was in SMU, they were in the
- 1:07:28American. So they hadn't made the jump yet
- 1:07:30to the ACC. So he, he didn't have a good
- 1:07:33track record as a Power 4, Power 5 head coach coming into his
- 1:07:38time at TCU. So I didn't have high
- 1:07:40expectations. Obviously year one blew things
- 1:07:43out of the water, but he's been very steady since then.
- 1:07:45So I, I got him, I've got him ranked relatively high here on
- 1:07:50my list. I've got him at 5th and that's
- 1:07:52exactly where it comes out in aggregate for for all of us
- 1:07:55Chef. You had him at 5th as well, so.
- 1:07:5713 and 2, five and seven, nine and four, nine and four is, I
- 1:08:00mean, he's exactly, I mean, that's better than Chris
- 1:08:04Kleiman's, you know, record. I mean, it's just better.
- 1:08:08And like his, even his low, I mean, obviously it's not during
- 1:08:11COVID, but I mean, his low was not even as worse as, you know,
- 1:08:14Chris Kleiman. So I don't know.
- 1:08:17Yeah, Matt, you had him at 4th. I mean any thoughts on on where
- 1:08:20Sonny comes in here? No, yeah, you mentioned a lot
- 1:08:24about his average record. And then I do look at, you know,
- 1:08:272022. I mean, that was, you know, a
- 1:08:31huge accomplishment to obviously win the Fiesta Bowl, go to the
- 1:08:35national championship game. I know they got humiliated
- 1:08:38there. But I, I look at that, that that
- 1:08:41props up for me his ranking. I could have probably, I could
- 1:08:48have probably put him. Well, no, I did put him above
- 1:08:51one other coach. So yeah, I I look at that and
- 1:08:56you know, that props his ranking up for me.
- 1:08:59Scali Scali coming in at 8th is, I think interesting.
- 1:09:03I, I had him at, I had him at 6th.
- 1:09:05I had him pretty high. I had him higher than anybody
- 1:09:07else. Chef had him at, Chef had him at
- 1:09:11at 8th and Matt, you had him at 14th or 13th.
- 1:09:14So he came in as as probably the biggest discrepancy for all of
- 1:09:18us for a single coach. Pretty much everybody's been
- 1:09:21within the similar tier or the same tier for pretty much
- 1:09:24everybody, but Scali was the widest variants I think, for all
- 1:09:27of us. It's interesting, I think with
- 1:09:30my data, it was definitely skewed wrong for Scali strictly
- 1:09:34because he has one win. So he has a career 1000 win
- 1:09:38percentage, which is like that throws off the data, right.
- 1:09:41So I had to move him down in my ranking as a result of that.
- 1:09:44And, and I felt like where he comes in here at 8th is, is
- 1:09:47pretty fair. Again, because of his track
- 1:09:50record as a, as a defensive coordinator, the success that he
- 1:09:53had at Utah, He's basically just going to continue doing what
- 1:09:57Kyle Whittingham had been doing would be my understanding or, or
- 1:10:01at least thought process here. So I, I think he'll continue to,
- 1:10:05to steady the ship there and, and it's going to be pretty much
- 1:10:09the same. I just don't see it changing all
- 1:10:11that much. So I think coming in at 8th in a
- 1:10:1416 team conference is, you know, middle of the pack.
- 1:10:17It's pretty much kind of where you would belong.
- 1:10:20Brennan is a guy that then moved up significantly from last year
- 1:10:23to this year. He was 15th in aggregate last
- 1:10:26year moves up to 6th. I had him at 8th.
- 1:10:29Matt, you had him at 6th and Chef, you had him at 6th.
- 1:10:34This one's interesting because Matt, you definitely went with
- 1:10:38recency bias here as opposed to career what he's done because
- 1:10:42when you look at his career, he's 47 and 60 all time.
- 1:10:46He has a career 439 win percentage and at the School of
- 1:10:52Arizona he's barely above 500 with a 13 and 12 record.
- 1:10:55So I would love to hear your take because you had him in this
- 1:10:59tier, but you went with not the career approach on Brent
- 1:11:04specifically, but not for anybody else?
- 1:11:07Well, OK. Sure.
- 1:11:10So. I mean, I, I, for him, I took a
- 1:11:13little bit of recent see into it because I look at his first two
- 1:11:18seasons or you know, this will be year 4, year three.
- 1:11:24And one of the key things, you know, that I look at from year
- 1:11:28one to year 2 is how much I think Arizona improved from year
- 1:11:32one to year 2. So I, the tough part for me was
- 1:11:40I think he's not in a top tier, top 4 coach in the conference.
- 1:11:48I, you know, I looked at I, there was some recency there,
- 1:11:53but he also had like his last year at San Jose State was
- 1:11:56pretty good. So that that was why I put him
- 1:12:00at 6th. I, I think he, I think he has
- 1:12:03the potential like, like this is where I, that's why I think my,
- 1:12:08my logic kind of is more valid. I don't have no shots or
- 1:12:13anything like that. I just think it's more valid.
- 1:12:15I think you, you, you're not going to be able to justify
- 1:12:19Britt Brennan without saying, look at his team this year.
- 1:12:24Look at what he could potentially do off of a really
- 1:12:28good season that he had last season.
- 1:12:30Because if he can marry that up, then this, just this justifies
- 1:12:33the spot that we all put him in. Maybe I, I mean, I don't know.
- 1:12:41Again, I think everybody has their own way of interpreting
- 1:12:44what a power ranking is. So there isn't a right?
- 1:12:50There's definitely no right. There's just more, right?
- 1:12:54Yeah, I'm, I'm with you there. I'm with you there.
- 1:12:56I read the definition earlier. Take that as you will.
- 1:12:59Oh, look at this Colton though. Our final tier.
- 1:13:02Let me get that. Let me get that right there.
- 1:13:05All right. Who won that guy?
- 1:13:07So 4th through 1st, the top tier here.
- 1:13:11We've got Willie Fritz and Kenny Kenny Dillingham tied for third.
- 1:13:16We've got Joey McGuire at 2nd, the defending Big 12 champion at
- 1:13:202nd, and Kalani Sataki, the defending Big 12 runner up at
- 1:13:25first coming off of ACFP snub and McGuire coming off of a ACFP
- 1:13:31appearance. Interesting, interesting thought
- 1:13:35process here. I I would love to hear Willie
- 1:13:37Fritz from last year to this year moved up 10 spots from 13th
- 1:13:41to 10th. Kenny Dillingham is exactly
- 1:13:43where we ranked him last year at that third place and McGuire and
- 1:13:49Sotaki. Sotaki was a top tier guy for us
- 1:13:51last year. We had him at 4th, so he didn't
- 1:13:54move up much, but they had a great season and he's continued
- 1:13:58to to prove that their move to the Big 12 was the right choice
- 1:14:01for them. They've done a fantastic job in
- 1:14:03that transition after a lackluster first year going I
- 1:14:06think 5:00 and 7:00 in that first season.
- 1:14:09And then McGuire moves up 8 spots from from 10th or no, he
- 1:14:13was yeah, from 10th to to 2nd. So we were close on all these.
- 1:14:19None of these were unanimous for us, but we had each.
- 1:14:22Well, with the exception of Matt having Kenny Dillingham and
- 1:14:25Willie Fritz flip-flopped, we pretty much all had all four of
- 1:14:29these guys in this top tier here.
- 1:14:31But let's start with Willie Fritz and the season that they
- 1:14:34had. Yeah, I think we were all wrong
- 1:14:37on Willie Fritz. I think we could speak.
- 1:14:38I could speak for all of us. And the reason why I had him so
- 1:14:43low. It was.
- 1:14:44And I can remember vividly saying that he just has to prove
- 1:14:47it because we all were, we all admired Willie Fritz.
- 1:14:51But he was, he's an old man taking over the Houston job.
- 1:14:55That was not very, you know, I didn't think they were going to
- 1:14:58be all that good. And he came in and he recruited
- 1:15:02his butt often. He does what Willie Fritz does.
- 1:15:04And he he spanked, you know, he spanked K State in in heat.
- 1:15:10We are in Houston. And you know, it's just he's
- 1:15:15done exactly what he's needed to do.
- 1:15:18And I have no reason not to put him up here.
- 1:15:21He he deserves it. And now this season could be a
- 1:15:26little funky for him. It could be.
- 1:15:28Yeah. I think it could go either way
- 1:15:30for Houston this season. I think they could either get
- 1:15:33spanked because they got a good non con game.
- 1:15:35I think this season I'm almost 100% sure they got a really
- 1:15:39good, really good test. But man, Vegas thinks that
- 1:15:47Houston's like the 5th best team in the Big 12.
- 1:15:49So I man, maybe he's there. Maybe he's anointed himself to
- 1:15:54stay in the top five. They do not have a good non con.
- 1:15:56They play Oregon State in Houston, they play Southern and
- 1:16:01they play Georgia Southern. Who's playing?
- 1:16:05Who's playing A&M? Oh.
- 1:16:11Is that Arizona State Plan A? Arizona State's Plan A.
- 1:16:14Oh, OK. Sorry, sorry, Dillahan.
- 1:16:17Actually, that's why I think Dillahan, Arizona State could be
- 1:16:20getting spanked this season. Yeah, I'll just say with Willie
- 1:16:26Freitzel, yeah, yeah, I was definitely wrong on on him.
- 1:16:28But you know, kind of looking back at what he's done at
- 1:16:34Houston the past handful of years, I mean, last year was
- 1:16:37obviously a huge year, but he's shown that consistency of like
- 1:16:42building a program multiple stops and from the FCS level
- 1:16:48went up. And looking at just if you think
- 1:16:54about last year's kind of coaches and you know, we've had
- 1:16:57a handful of coaches that have obviously left the conference,
- 1:17:01it would have been natural obviously to move him up anyway.
- 1:17:05But looking at his resume as a whole, what he's done, I think
- 1:17:10he could have a big year this year.
- 1:17:13I liked him at 2:00. So that kind of moved him up a
- 1:17:16little bit I think compared to you all.
- 1:17:21You had him at 2:00. I did have him at 2:00.
- 1:17:24No, you've got Kenny. Well, yeah, you've got Willie
- 1:17:26Fritz. Kenny.
- 1:17:27Kenny Dillingham. Sorry, I thought when.
- 1:17:29We I thought we were talking about Willie.
- 1:17:30We were talking about Willie Fritz.
- 1:17:31No, we, we are. We are what?
- 1:17:33The Arizona State and the A and MI.
- 1:17:34I I railroaded that whole conversation I threw in but.
- 1:17:38He's he is tied, they are tied for third with each other.
- 1:17:41So let's just segue into to Dillingham here.
- 1:17:44It's it's going to be man the, the guy.
- 1:17:48This could be the year that we had next season when we do this.
- 1:17:52It could be totally different based on recency and all that.
- 1:17:55Because I think Kenny Dillingham could have one of those seasons
- 1:17:59where we thought Arizona State was going to be really bad.
- 1:18:02And it's funny because now that I think about it, my logic on
- 1:18:07why I had Kenny Dillingham at like 1516, his first season, is
- 1:18:11exactly why Matt has Colin Klein at 16, which is really funny.
- 1:18:18But we saw where he ended up. So maybe again, I understand.
- 1:18:24Yes, yes. So if you were wrong.
- 1:18:27My expectation is that he will be moving from 16 very quickly.
- 1:18:31But yes, I that is what I should have done.
- 1:18:35I should have gone back and been like, Oh yeah, look at Bob.
- 1:18:38Kenny Dillingham at 16. But look at.
- 1:18:41But what I would say was that I was wrong about that ranking.
- 1:18:44Yeah, I and yeah. But he had a he had a shit
- 1:18:48season the previous year and he only had one year as a head
- 1:18:51coach at that point. I think they went 2 and 10.
- 1:18:53So I feel like 16th out of 16th was totally fair.
- 1:18:56OK, yeah, I was thinking that he won the won the Big 12 his
- 1:19:00rookie season. He no.
- 1:19:01He did not he. OK, so take everything I just
- 1:19:04said back, Matt, you're still very wrong.
- 1:19:07Because that was the year. That was the year they were
- 1:19:09seven and two going into Manhattan.
- 1:19:11We were both 7 and two. We were coming off of that
- 1:19:13Houston loss, I think, right. And, and yeah, we went into the
- 1:19:18Arizona State game in Manhattan thinking like, oh, we still got
- 1:19:21an outside shot at the Big 12 here.
- 1:19:24And they yeah, that. Did that.
- 1:19:25That was. 2024, yeah. 2024 That's the year that I ranked
- 1:19:28Dillingham at 16th because he was coming off of A2 in 10
- 1:19:31season. Shirt.
- 1:19:32Yeah, yeah, the day is there. But what I'm what my point was
- 1:19:39before I tried to incriminate myself for no reason, was that
- 1:19:44Kenny Dillingham could be moving down because I don't think his
- 1:19:47roster is all that well this season and he's got a tough,
- 1:19:50tough schedule. So, man, I could be wrong about
- 1:19:54Kenny Dillingham. Maybe, maybe the loss of Will
- 1:19:57not Will Stein that was at Oregon, but maybe the luster of
- 1:20:00him being at Oregon. And still riding that momentum
- 1:20:04of that Big 12 title. Maybe it's wearing off.
- 1:20:07Maybe he's not as good as we think he is.
- 1:20:09I don't know. Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:20:12That's So let's let's talk about the top 2 here.
- 1:20:16It's Joey Maguire's coming off of a Big 12 championship and a
- 1:20:19CFP appearance, Kalai Sataki, runner up of the same Big 12
- 1:20:25conference championship game and got snubbed for the CFP.
- 1:20:28But coming off of a bowl victory where Notre Dame aim pussied out
- 1:20:34and didn't appear. They just decided to take their
- 1:20:36ball and go home instead of playing in the game with them.
- 1:20:39So thoughts, thoughts on where you ranked these two guys?
- 1:20:42So I, I was the only one that had Joey in first.
- 1:20:46You both had him in 3rd and so it averaged out at 2nd.
- 1:20:50Kalani Sataki, you both had him at 1st and I had him at 2nd.
- 1:20:54So I'm curious the thought process there and, and because
- 1:20:58I, I can share mine and it's, I think it's pretty clear here.
- 1:21:02It's Joey Mcguire's coming off of a Big 12 championship and
- 1:21:05just assembled yet another great roster with the exception of the
- 1:21:08quarterback. But this isn't a quarterback
- 1:21:11power ranking. This is a coaching power
- 1:21:12ranking. And McGuire has proven to be
- 1:21:15pretty steady and, and strong at, at the helmet at Texas Tech
- 1:21:19so far in what, four or five years that he's been there now.
- 1:21:22So I I've got him ranked first but curious that.
- 1:21:27Would be the reason why that would be the reason why I have
- 1:21:30Kalani sataki #1 is the consistency.
- 1:21:33I think the move from the independent route to the Big 12
- 1:21:37he's it's, it's been seamless. And then also the reason why I
- 1:21:43think we were justified putting Chris Kleiman number one last
- 1:21:48season, even at, you know, he went six and six.
- 1:21:51But I think we were just convinced that that the
- 1:21:55consistency he was, he was not coming off of a Big 12 tighter.
- 1:21:59Kenny Dillingham was and we still had Chris Kleiman number
- 1:22:02one last season. I think Kalani Sataki very
- 1:22:06steady. Joey McGuire.
- 1:22:07I, I, I put a lot of projection into my Big 12 rankings and my
- 1:22:13my coaching rankings. And I think an 8 and four season
- 1:22:17at Texas Tech is very plausible. I don't think that they could
- 1:22:21start off hot and with the roster the way you have it, if
- 1:22:25you go 8:00 and 4:00, I'm going to drop you low.
- 1:22:29That's what's going to happen. And I think Joey, Joey, he's got
- 1:22:35a lot to back up this season. He's down maybe 2 quarterbacks
- 1:22:40because who knows how the knee is going to be working for our
- 1:22:43boy. I don't remember his name, but
- 1:22:45Will Hammond? Will Hammond?
- 1:22:46I don't know if the knee is going to be all that well, but
- 1:22:48we'll see if we'll see if he can back it up because I think the
- 1:22:52Big 12 is going to be gunning for him and that could weigh on
- 1:22:56how I rank him next season. Yeah, and I put Kalani Sataki at
- 1:23:03one. You'd mentioned the consistency.
- 1:23:06You know, he has done a really good job at BYU.
- 1:23:09Obviously two out of the three years of the Big 12, they won
- 1:23:11over 10 games. He had a lot of success from the
- 1:23:15independent route as well. My issue with Joey McGuire is,
- 1:23:19yes, he last year, great year, right?
- 1:23:23But you think about what he, you know, 2025 or you know, 20, you
- 1:23:28know, 2024 and a stint kind of before, you know, they really
- 1:23:32started getting some of these really good players.
- 1:23:36He he was not winning a lot of games.
- 1:23:42So I look at last year, I think he really helped coach that team
- 1:23:45and get them to where they needed to be, which is, which is
- 1:23:48great. I had him at 3:00.
- 1:23:53If he has another great year this year with the recruits that
- 1:23:57he's brought in and and whatnot, then you know, he'll probably
- 1:24:02move up for me depending on what goes on.
- 1:24:05But for me, it was hard. I mean, I had him at 9:00 last
- 1:24:08year just because a lot of people were talking about Joey
- 1:24:12McGuire. He had to have a great year, had
- 1:24:13to have a great year. He did have a great year, but
- 1:24:18for me, I couldn't move him up to one with that.
- 1:24:21Looking at what Kalani Sataki has been at BYU, but also what
- 1:24:26Willie Fritz has done in his time at Houston and how he's
- 1:24:29grown that program and his QuickTime there, as well as his
- 1:24:33past experience. I love it.
- 1:24:36I, I think this is when we, when we zoom out here and look at the
- 1:24:39aggregate, I feel like this is a pretty good power ranking.
- 1:24:42I feel like the truth somewhere lies somewhere in between here
- 1:24:46for for all three of us. And I think when you look at the
- 1:24:49state of the Big 12 and you look at this 2026 season where
- 1:24:52expectations are for a lot of these teams, I feel like this is
- 1:24:56a pretty fair ranking when you look at it holistically here.
- 1:24:59So it's going to be interesting to see how this all plays out.
- 1:25:01I'm going to put together a little graphic again for this
- 1:25:04year so we can piss off some Texas Tech fans by having Joey
- 1:25:07ranked second. I think that's going to be
- 1:25:09hilarious. It's going to get a lot of
- 1:25:11engagement, clickbait rage bait from from the Tech fans.
- 1:25:14So I'm excited to to farm some of that out of them.
- 1:25:18But any any final thoughts before we we drop out here?
- 1:25:22I think it's a good list guys. I think I think we could be just
- 1:25:28like every season, we're going to have some some stinkers.
- 1:25:32I think this is going to be the one season where we have the
- 1:25:35biggest movement amongst because I don't think we're going to.
- 1:25:40Obviously this is where the rankings come into play and for
- 1:25:45next season, how many departures do we have?
- 1:25:48How many of these guys are not going to be on this list next
- 1:25:51season because Matt already said Lance is not going to be there.
- 1:25:56You did say that. It's not in Dillingham.
- 1:25:58I said if they don't have a good year, I'd have to think that
- 1:26:02they might make a change. But.
- 1:26:03So on Stinky and. Dillingham, they both had
- 1:26:05overtures from Michigan and some other programs, Penn State
- 1:26:09versus Taka. I mean, a lot of these guys are
- 1:26:11highly sought after guys, sought after guys, so.
- 1:26:13I'm gonna say get poached. I'm gonna see we don't see Lance
- 1:26:17next season. I don't think we see a random
- 1:26:20next season. I think Dion might step and I
- 1:26:28maybe Kenny gets poached, but I think it might be poached for
- 1:26:32like a lower SEC school. I don't know.
- 1:26:38I think, I think we have a bounce back year from Dion.
- 1:26:41I think Rich Rod may be somewhere in the middle of the
- 1:26:44pack depending on what his roster looks like, what he's
- 1:26:47assembled there. It's just, I feel like it's such
- 1:26:49a black box with how much turnover both he and and Dion
- 1:26:52had that it's hard to know what they're gonna do with it.
- 1:26:56Scali could obviously move up this list.
- 1:26:58Just again, the the lack of experience as a head coach is
- 1:27:00weighing him down a little bit here.
- 1:27:02Morris could either go up or go down, but the vibes are really
- 1:27:05high in Stillwater right now. Brennan I could see regressing
- 1:27:09back to the mean a little bit after a Goodyear last year.
- 1:27:11I don't know. It's it's going to be fun to see
- 1:27:13this play out. I think maybe we do.
- 1:27:15Maybe we'll run again. Maybe we'll.
- 1:27:17Do under 2 1/2. At some point.
- 1:27:20Over under 2 1/2. I'm going to go under.
- 1:27:25They're going to go under. Under I'm going to take the
- 1:27:28over. 1234, so we had four this year.
- 1:27:36I would take the over. I think 3 is a good number.
- 1:27:38Oh, thanks, Matt. 1/2 I think we, we only had, we only had two
- 1:27:47departures from 24 to 25, Gus Malzahn and and Neil Brown and
- 1:27:53we had what, 44 departures last year?
- 1:27:56Yeah. So maybe go over, but it's like
- 1:28:003. Nope, you picked under.
- 1:28:01You can't. Pick under I heard I'll.
- 1:28:03Go under, I'll go under. It's fine.
- 1:28:04It's fine, It's fine. I'm taking a data-driven
- 1:28:08approach. Guys, come on.
- 1:28:10Yeah, Oh my God. My God.
- 1:28:11Look, we all took different approaches and that is should be
- 1:28:15respected. Celebrating diversity over here
- 1:28:21in in Dallas, TX Fireball, Matt says.
- 1:28:24All right, I, I don't have any other thoughts.
- 1:28:26I think for our next episode we can do something similar, but
- 1:28:29with the actual teams and get into team power rankings because
- 1:28:33I'm sure those are going to be different in a lot of cases than
- 1:28:36the than the actual coaching power rankings because we've
- 1:28:39done that in years past too. And then as we get closer to the
- 1:28:42season with with August and Paul camp and all that stuff
- 1:28:45starting, we'll obviously have our our position group previews
- 1:28:49and offense and defense and everything once we get a little
- 1:28:52closer to the season. But I'm looking forward to
- 1:28:55getting some more regular episodes on the books here,
- 1:28:57guys. The offseason's winding down for
- 1:28:59us. I know Scott gives a shit for
- 1:29:01for not recording as much in the offseason, but hey, he doesn't
- 1:29:05have kids. We've got kids.
- 1:29:06Well, Matt doesn't, but. Oh thanks, I appreciate that.
- 1:29:13Just getting back down all day today.
- 1:29:16I don't know if I ever want to do another episode.
- 1:29:20Just do better power rankings. That's all the our power
- 1:29:24rankings are different and we have different ways of looking
- 1:29:26at it. It's love.
- 1:29:28It's all love. It's all love.
- 1:29:31Matt, Matt. Matt might be right.
- 1:29:34Oh, I hope not. But.
- 1:29:35I hope not. I look, I hope I'm not right.
- 1:29:37I hope. This could be This could be fun
- 1:29:39to do for basketball this season 2.
- 1:29:42Oh my, where's where? Where?
- 1:29:43Would you saw KCA at? Where would he be?
- 1:29:45Oh man. That'd probably be.
- 1:29:48It'd probably be pretty similar, but.
- 1:29:50Yeah, different episode for a different time.
