- 0:00It's cool because the last time I talked to this guy was gosh, almost
- 0:04a week ago to the day, and he was just just a guy with
- 0:08a few number one songs taking over the world. Since then, we are
- 0:12talking to the CMA Best New Artists, New Artists of the Year, and
- 0:17not only that Grammy nomination. Yes, yes, baby, the Grammy nominated
- 0:21dog. That's the crazy part that to me is like, you know,
- 0:26man, it's just it's happened within thirty six hours of winning the CMA New
- 0:30Artist of the Year award, right after my first extremely like genuinely viral moment,
- 0:36you know what I mean. It's just crazy, man, just unreal.
- 0:39Uh, take me through what that nomination means to you, because we
- 0:43have seen this literally, like, who's this jelly Roll? Yeah, I'd
- 0:47love to check him out to now. I mean, it feels like you're
- 0:50at the top of the musical world. I can't even paint you in the
- 0:53genre because you're, like we said, you're all over the place. So
- 0:55what does this Grammy nomination mean to you? On top of everything you've witnessed
- 0:59of yourself over the last couple of years. You know, man, there's
- 1:03I was talking to somebody about this. My wife, actually, she didn't
- 1:04fully get it. She was like, you know, I know the Grammys
- 1:07are a big deal. She's like, but why does it mean so much
- 1:10to an artist? And I was like, the moment you become a Grammy
- 1:12nominee or an award, a Grammy Award winner, but even a nominee,
- 1:19that is now the biggest title you can have, Like you know, like
- 1:23when you're a prince. One day you can be a king, and once
- 1:26you're a king, there's no bigger title. They just call you king such
- 1:27and such like right now, it's like, this is the three time CMT
- 1:32Award winner, New Artists of the Year, CMA Award winning, But the
- 1:36moment you become Grammy nominated, every time somebody introduces me, from now on,
- 1:41we'll go this is the Grammy nominated artist Recording artist Jelly row. I
- 1:45thought about how big Taylor Swift is, right, she's the new Michael Jackson.
- 1:48And they put a picture of her up that first Chief game that she
- 1:51was at and it said the twenty time Grammy Award winning Taylor Swift or twenty
- 1:56time Grammy Award winner or however many times she's won a Grammy and to me,
- 2:00that just shows you the power of what that means to have your name
- 2:01associated with the Grammys. Has it set in? Have you let it set
- 2:05in yet? Denominations? Yeah? Man, I mean, dude, just
- 2:08you know, it's unreal. I haven't. I'm nervous, like it's such
- 2:15a big thing. You're just like, what can go wrong between now and
- 2:17then? Like the little negative pirate on my shoulders, just like immediately gat
- 2:22me in my feelings about what this is. You know, take me back
- 2:27to CMA night. I feel like you're a guy even though, let me
- 2:32tell you, ninety five percent of that room picked you. Not that other
- 2:37people didn't deserve it, but you are talented and you're a hell of a
- 2:42guy. You care about everybody you come in contact with. That type of
- 2:45stuff matters, right, So when it came to that moment when you gave
- 2:50your speech, obviously crazy viral. I mean I see people quoting it.
- 2:53It's got to be one of the most quoted speeches in the history of the
- 2:59CMA Awards because literally you log into Instagram, especially the windshield did the rearview
- 3:02thing, which I've heard you say in interviews before. It's unreal. Man,
- 3:06was any of that planned or were you able just to go? I
- 3:08just went no. I didn't think I was gonna win. I thought Zach
- 3:10Bryan or Parker McCullum had it, especially with the year Zach Bryan's had,
- 3:14yep, and uh, Parker's my buddy, so all pun nintended when I
- 3:16say he's had a hell of a year or two, you know what I
- 3:20mean, hell of a year. So it's like for me, I just
- 3:23I didn't think i'd win. So when they called my name, I was
- 3:27walking up there and I was like, I mean, I'll never forget it.
- 3:30I was looking at that screen and there's inside Baseball, y'all know this.
- 3:34But I look up at the screen in front of me and it goes
- 3:38fifty nine, fifty eight, fifty seven, and I'm like, I gotta
- 3:43say something, like I got sixty seconds here to really say something, and
- 3:46I need to say it. But it connected. It did. Man,
- 3:51it was unreal. I could not have expected me to come out of that
- 3:54Awards show with so many viral storylines. I think they somebody told me we
- 3:59had a company do the analytic impressions on it, like where they can see
- 4:01every retweet. How many it got and every repost and like, like into
- 4:05the nerd stuff that like eighty million views or something like they think one in
- 4:10every three adults in America this week. You could be like, hey,
- 4:13have you heard of a jelly roll Grather. They'd be like, I've just
- 4:15seen that speech of his. You know what I mean? Yeah? You.
- 4:17And it's funny because even my grandma was like that jelly roll fella is
- 4:21a friend of yours. He won a big award. I was like,
- 4:25yeah, Grandma, jelly rolls of man. Uh, take me through through
- 4:29the rest of the year for you now, because obviously we're about to talk
- 4:30about another big song for you with Laney that is on its way to doing
- 4:33some big things. But what do you have the rest of the year?
- 4:38Man? You know, I still got a bunch of shows. I'm still
- 4:40doing shug. I'm flying out of here tonight to do a show in San
- 4:42Antonio right after I get off stayed in San Antonio, I'll fla straight to
- 4:46La so I will have hit Nashville, Texas and California before I go to
- 4:49sleep. And I'll do a show in Arizona on Wednesday and then make my
- 4:54way back home and then be home for Thanksgiving. We're just working, dude.
- 4:57It's it's non stop with us. We're on the constant go. Knowing
- 5:00how amazing twenty twenty three has been for you, is any part of you
- 5:03obviously you talk, You've been vocal about I got unplugged. You boys got
- 5:06unplugged for a little while. Uh are you already trying to manage your schedule
- 5:11in twenty four? Yeah? To do And I'm going to say to do
- 5:14less, but I don't mean that in like a disrespect, you know what
- 5:15I mean, but like to make sure you're managing your schedule because you hit
- 5:19red hot so fast you really couldn't. Yeah. Yeah, I've got to
- 5:23take some time for myself. Man, I gotta start saying no, especially
- 5:25spend more time with my family. And I'm looking at it in twenty twenty
- 5:28four and I'm gonna unplug from the phone here right in the middle of December
- 5:30and kind of got a month off before I got to really get back into
- 5:33it again, So it'd be good. That month will do me a lot
- 5:35of good. Another moment that went viral and it has since been corrected,
- 5:41but dropping the CMA Award, Oh dude, the thing that people that.
- 5:45First of all, what was your immediate reaction? I was like, man,
- 5:50it was crazy, dude. Listen when I dropped that award. You
- 5:54could hear it was in the media room, so everybody's out running around,
- 5:57and then I dropped the award and you could have heard a fly fall,
- 6:00you know what I mean. I was just instantly like, whoa, you
- 6:02know what I mean? Just crazy. But what but people don't understand is
- 6:06it didn't even have your name on it. It technically wasn't your award,
- 6:10right, it's a stand in. Yeah. It was like, yeah,
- 6:14I didn't know that. Though I didn't know anything. I just knew they
- 6:15handed me one. So I was like, oh god, I get my
- 6:16award. Tonighters I gotta expect this. I didn't see if they had my
- 6:19name or nothing. But I was just like, that's cool. I got
- 6:20an award and I was handing it to everybody anyways because you've got one.
- 6:25But they're way heavier than they look like they are. Absolutely they're crazy heavy.
- 6:30So I was like, man, this is I want people to feel.
- 6:31It's like it's name Gurvy and h. Then I dropped it and I
- 6:34was like, I cannot believe I blew this, dude. I cannot believe.
- 6:38How would I of all people, you know, why me? You
- 6:42know what I'm saying, Why could it have been Luke Comb's You know,
- 6:44there's so many other people back here that would have been way smoother. They
- 6:46would have dropped it. Uh. In that moment you were talking about the
- 6:50post show, there's like a big press. I don't know what they call
- 6:54those, but like just it's a bunch of people in one room and on
- 6:58on on one of the biggest moments of your career so far and maybe your
- 7:00life. You're just accepted this award, but still on that stage, you
- 7:04gave credit to Laney Wilson. You know, you're talking about where your song
- 7:08is on the chart right now with the Entertainer of the Year Landy Wilson.
- 7:12Knowing that this year has brought you and Laney closer, especially with working together
- 7:15on the single. What did it mean for you to see her outshine?
- 7:19I mean not that she didn't deserve it, but I mean she beat out
- 7:24some pretty massive names that have done some pretty big things over the lessons.
- 7:27Did I read that she was the first woman to get it in a decade.
- 7:30I would believe it. I don't know for such just man, what
- 7:32does that say about women's country music and where it's at right now and Laney
- 7:36being at the forefront of that, you know what I mean? I think
- 7:39that it's really cool what's happening. And Laney, Man, this is how
- 7:43I describe this business to people. I am willing to work the hours and
- 7:47do the stuff that most people in this town are not willing to do.
- 7:50Right. Yeah, Laney's willing to do what I won't do, you know
- 7:55what I mean, like the stuff, and I'm like, no way,
- 7:57I'm waking up and doing that. Laney's like I'm in you know, I
- 8:00mean, nobody works harder than her. I thought I was bragging, but
- 8:03I was like, Laney, dude, I only spent seventy days home last
- 8:05year, which I've only spent forty days home this year. And she goes
- 8:09she looks at me and goes, ooh, you had it good. I
- 8:11was like what she was like sixteen sixteen nights she slept in her own bed
- 8:16last year in twenty twenty two, you know what I mean? Like,
- 8:20people do not understand the work ethic that Lanney has. Man, she is
- 8:22one of the hardest working people I've ever seen in my entire life. So
- 8:26to see her get publicly rewarded for that and her positivity, like her message
- 8:31is just so pure and so genuine, you know what I mean. Like,
- 8:33it's just you know, just peace. It's he'll billy stuff. It's
- 8:37hill billy hippi shit, it's love everybody, everybody be loved kind of stuff.
- 8:41Come one, come all, except all. It's just it's a great
- 8:43look for country music that Laney Wilson's on top of the game. Knowing the
- 8:48night that you just had, followed by the Grammy news, knowing the night
- 8:52that Laney just had. How much more special? Now is it for this
- 8:56song to go number one? For you? And save me? Dude?
- 9:01It's man. First of all, this song has so many layers of a
- 9:05story that make it special. Bubba. I wrote this with a guy I've
- 9:09known since high school. Neither one of us were published writers. We were
- 9:11just two dudes in a studio with a guitar and wrote this song. So
- 9:16for us to have this moment, it's crazy. Moving forward. The next
- 9:20level is when we had to go and list somebody to produce it. I
- 9:22called Zach Krowell, a dude that I bought a beat from in eighteen years
- 9:28ago for seventy bucks or fifty bucks or something, you know what I mean.
- 9:31Who's now been a part of thirty number ones. So it's like the
- 9:35layers of this and then Laney and her year and then my year, and
- 9:39the song is nominated for a Grammy. The hands of history will never be
- 9:43able to take that back, you know what I mean. If everything goes
- 9:46belly up for me in the next five years and I never win another award
- 9:50or get nominated, and I you know what I mean, everybody just turns
- 9:52cold on jelly roll. They'll never take away from me that I was nominated
- 9:56for a Grammy in twenty twenty three. You know, it's crazy, that's
- 10:00how much this means to me. This is it when it comes to twenty
- 10:03twenty four. Are you a guy that's in competition with yourself regularly? Like
- 10:07I just put this out so like withitsitt Chapel, right, great album?
- 10:13Do you have to outdo yourself on the next one? Yeah, because I'm
- 10:15the only person I'm competing against. I'm not out here fighting against anybody else,
- 10:20you know what I mean. I'm not out here chasing against anybody else
- 10:22or I'm just one hundred percent out here going to You know, I'm trying
- 10:26to be a better version of myself. I'm trying to beat the old jelly
- 10:28roll bub I'm trying to put out a better song and save me. That's
- 10:31what I'm writing against when I'm in the room. I'm not trying to write
- 10:33a song better than another artist. So with that, I have a second
- 10:35part of that question, but I want to ask first with save me.
- 10:39Once it is run and it's run its course, which is the type of
- 10:41song the list forever? Right? Do you know what's next? Are you
- 10:46going to focus on a new project after that? Oh? As far as
- 10:50like radio singles go, and how do I like to share the Yeah,
- 10:56no, well I don't know. I'm talking to the label because I'm gonna
- 10:58let them do whatever they want to do because I trust them. I love
- 11:01Halfway to Hell. I know it's a little unconditioned, untraditional for country radio,
- 11:05but so is every song Jether Roles ever had on country radio. So
- 11:09I love Halfway to Hell. I love the tempo and I love the energy
- 11:11of it. So I kind of hope that's my next single. I know
- 11:13what goes up live incredibly, Like when you see Halfway to Hell live,
- 11:18it goes. Let me ask you this. Then the second part of that,
- 11:22the question about outdoing yourself. Do you know where you're going with a
- 11:26new album yet? Are you letting this breathe? Like? Oh no,
- 11:28No, I've been writing, dude. I'm probably forty fifty songs in Man,
- 11:31this new album. I'm gonna put out a lot of music in twenty
- 11:33three, four, twenty four, twenty four. I'm put out a lot
- 11:35of music in twenty four. Yeah, it's all blending together now. I
- 11:37look to tell you. I'm like, tell, where are we so being
- 11:41in competition with yourself? How do you outdo yourself? In twenty four?
- 11:46I just want to write better songs, man, It's like anything else,
- 11:48dude. I mean the more I write, the better I get. I'm
- 11:50understanding it more. That's the music side, but more important, I want
- 11:54to spend more time with my daughter in twenty four, it's the other.
- 11:58I gotta be a better father next year. I was very absent this year,
- 12:01so I got to learn how to balance this thing a little better.
- 12:03Does she understand that? I mean she's older, she's fifteen, but they
- 12:07understand, but don't understand. They understand better when they're seven because they don't
- 12:11understand. Yeah, but when they do understand and they understand that, you
- 12:13know, there ain't no excuse, you know what I mean. And obviously,
- 12:16the last thing I want to ask you, coming off of what was
- 12:18a massive year for you and even building up to going into twenty twenty three,
- 12:24have you been able to make just a ridiculous purchase like you have this
- 12:28adult money now that maybe because let me tell you something might I'll be straight
- 12:33up. My adult money is something I couldn't have when I was a kid.
- 12:35I bought wrestling championship belts. That's awesome. I got the video games.
- 12:39Like I am with adult money, I am not the guy to role
- 12:45model nobody. So what are purchases you've been able to buy that You're like,
- 12:48this is ridiculous, but I can do it. Someth'm gonna my adult
- 12:50money. Sneakers? I bought a bunch of sneakers. Why you always send
- 12:52me with a different pair of sneakers on when I'm on carpets and stuff?
- 12:56But did y'all see the clip of me and my wife pulling up in that
- 12:58Lincoln with the kissing doorts mine. Oh really yeah? The doors before awards
- 13:03season. Yeah, no, I had it made for the awards because last
- 13:07year I pulled up in that red Cadillac, which is mine. So I
- 13:09was like, man, I want to do a Lincoln next year, sixty
- 13:13four. I'm not gonna get one for next year though, y'all can't afford
- 13:15a new car every Cmas. But but that's that's uh. That was probably
- 13:22my real crazy, Like you know, like when you got enough money to
- 13:24just go buy an old school car you'll drive five times a year. It's
- 13:28getting ridiculous, dude, I know you're I can't tell you how we've We
- 13:33will never forget the first time they brought you in and they're like, oh
- 13:35we got this jelly row. God, dude, the world is sat Nate
- 13:37lunch in front of y'all spot right there at all there. That was great.
- 13:41You couldn't do it now without getting bothered. I'll tell you that crazy
- 13:43living a good life will probably love you, brother man
