- 0:12Speaker 1: Police issued an advisory around 2.30 this morning asking for
- 0:16Speaker 1: people to avoid the area of St. Thomas Line and
- 0:18Speaker 1: Ashland Crescent. The RNC was initially called following reports of
- 0:22Speaker 1: a dog bite with the animals reportedly roaming around the neighborhood.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Callers to the VOCM newsroom described the heavy police presence
- 0:30Speaker 1: in the community, noting that officers were using drones to
- 0:33Speaker 1: search for the pair. In an update shortly before 6 o'clock,
- 0:36Speaker 1: police say the situation had been resolved. A suspicious fire
- 0:40Speaker 1: Thursday night at a heritage structure in Placentia was knocked
- 0:43Speaker 1: down before further damage could spread throughout the building. RCMP

- 0:52Speaker 1: the former St. Luke's Anglican Church. Police say the fire

- 0:59Speaker 1: could spread throughout the building, which is now being used
- 1:03Speaker 1: as a cultural heritage center. Although the church was built
- 1:07Speaker 1: at the turn of the last century, the history dates
- 1:09Speaker 1: back as far as 1689. A repeat offender in the
- 1:14Speaker 1: Conception Bay North area has been sentenced in Harbor Grace
- 1:17Speaker 1: Provincial Court to three years with 331 days credited for
- 1:22Speaker 1: time served. Justin King appeared in provincial court for sentencing
- 1:26Speaker 1: yesterday on dozens of charges, including break and enter, possession
- 1:30Speaker 1: of stolen goods, theft, extortion, forcible confinement, and breaches of
- 1:35Speaker 1: previous release conditions. King is also subject to a 10-year
- 1:38Speaker 1: firearm prohibition and a one-year driving suspension. Cassie Kelleway, whose
- 1:42Speaker 1: family home is in Salmon Cove, was broken into in
- 1:46Speaker 1: January and became a vocal advocate following the crime. She
- 1:50Speaker 1: read the victim impact statement in court yesterday. Kelleway says
- 1:54Speaker 1: that she would have liked to have seen a stiffer
- 1:56Speaker 1: sentence handed down, and she hopes that King emerges from
- 1:59Speaker 1: the criminal justice system making better choices. Newfoundland and Labrador
- 2:04Speaker 1: remains one of the most expensive places in Canada to
- 2:06Speaker 1: buy gasoline following a very minor change at the pump overnight.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Prices of both gasoline and diesel dropped by just half
- 2:13Speaker 1: a cent across the island. There was also minimal movement
- 2:16Speaker 1: in the price of furnace oil. The next price adjustment

- 2:22Speaker 1: federal NDP says both the federal and provincial governments are
- 2:25Speaker 1: rushing into a deal on the Churchill River, and the
- 2:28Speaker 1: deal lacks what he calls significant consultation. Abby Lewis's comments
- 2:32Speaker 1: come just ahead of his speech at the NDP convention
- 2:35Speaker 1: in St. John's, the first of four stops in Atlantic
- 2:38Speaker 1: Canada where he touts what he feels is a strong party.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Lewis says that Ottawa has a habit of fast-tracking major
- 2:44Speaker 1: projects without due consultation or assessment. and cites Churchill Falls
- 2:48Speaker 1: as an example.
- 2:49Speaker 2: I think Jim and Sheila have made some really good points,
- 2:53Speaker 2: and they voted a kind of, you know, no, not yet,
- 2:56Speaker 2: until there's real oversight, until there's the public utility board
- 3:02Speaker 2: is really in charge of this thing, until the experts
- 3:04Speaker 2: being consulted are independent.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Not your news. I'm Zach Power.
