- 0:00Speaker 1: The January 11th, 1959 installment of CBS Radio's Gunsmoke was
- 0:06Speaker 1: episode 353, The Wolfer. In John Dunkel's story, Wolfer Webb,
- 0:12Speaker 1: a solitary hunter, refuses to leave land claimed by Nate Guthrie,
- 0:17Speaker 1: while a large white wolf is blamed for killing Guthrie's horses.
- 0:21Speaker 1: The dispute deepens into a dangerous pursuit, with William Conrad
- 0:26Speaker 1: as Marshal Matt Dillon and Parley Bear, Georgia Ellis, and
- 0:30Speaker 1: Howard McNair as Chester, Kitty, and Doc. Norman McDonald produced
- 0:36Speaker 1: the broadcast with Lawrence Dobkin and Vic Perrin in the
- 0:39Speaker 1: guest cast. Ladies and gentlemen, we now take you back
- 0:43Speaker 1: to the original broadcast.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Around Dodge City and in the Territory on West, there's
- 0:59Speaker 2: just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 1:02Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of Gunsmoke.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Gunsmoke Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad. The story of the violence
- 1:29Speaker 2: that moved west with young America. And the story of
- 1:33Speaker 2: a man who moved with it.
- 1:35Speaker 3: I'm that man. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal. The first
- 1:39Speaker 3: man they look for and the last they want to meet.
- 1:43Speaker 3: It's a chancy job. But it makes a man watchful.
- 1:46Speaker 4: And a little lonely.
- 1:50Speaker 5: Hold it, Mark.
- 2:08Speaker 6: Hold it, Victor.
- 2:14Speaker 7: Hey, web, don't shoot.
- 2:17Speaker 4: It's me, Nate Guthrie.
- 2:19Speaker 8: Now.
- 2:19Speaker 5: 20.
- 2:20Speaker 7: I had a hard time finding you, Webb.
- 2:24Speaker 4: Nothing but a dugout.
- 2:26Speaker 6: In the snow. Finally seen your smoke.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Now, can I come in?
- 2:33Speaker 8: I ain't stopping you.
- 2:43Speaker 6: At least it's some warmer. That's about all I can
- 2:46Speaker 6: say for it.
- 2:47Speaker 8: What you doing way out here anyway, Guthrie?
- 2:51Speaker 7: Come pay a call on my hired hand, that's all. Well,
- 2:56Speaker 7: ain't you even gonna ask me to set or offer
- 2:59Speaker 7: me some coffee?
- 3:00Speaker 4: Here's a pot.
- 3:02Speaker 6: Help yourself. You live alone like this too long, Whip.
- 3:09Speaker 4: You got no manners.
- 3:11Speaker 6: But then I never seen.
- 3:13Speaker 4: A wolfer that did. Yeah, pigs, all of you.
- 3:17Speaker 6: Want some? I've finished feeding. Feeding, just like a pig.
- 3:30Speaker 4: Neither there.
- 3:32Speaker 6: Must be below freezing, even in the sun.
- 3:35Speaker 7: Now, you didn't leave no warm ranch house just to
- 3:39Speaker 7: come be sociable with a wolf or Guthrie?
- 3:43Speaker 4: No, not dang likely.
- 3:46Speaker 6: You got some bone to pick with me, start picking.
- 3:49Speaker 6: All right. Webb, what am I hiring you for? Clean
- 3:55Speaker 6: the wolves off me land?
- 3:57Speaker 9: Right.
- 3:59Speaker 6: And I see you got pelts and all. You got
- 4:02Speaker 6: muskrat and bobcat.
- 4:04Speaker 4: And you got badger. You got everything but wolves.
- 4:06Speaker 6: I turn in plenty of wolf skin already. You seen it.
- 4:10Speaker 4: That's just what I mean.
- 4:13Speaker 6: I shot a raft of wolves for you. I was
- 4:15Speaker 6: here two months. Seemed like maybe you got most all
- 4:18Speaker 6: of them around. Told you I would. Yeah, that's right.
- 4:22Speaker 4: You lived up to your reputation.
- 4:24Speaker 6: Best wolf around the plains.
- 4:27Speaker 7: Only if you got them all, how come there's five
- 4:30Speaker 7: of my best colts laying.
- 4:31Speaker 6: Out there with their bellies ripped?
- 4:33Speaker 1: You tell me that?
- 4:35Speaker 6: I've seen them.
- 4:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I bet you did.
- 4:38Speaker 7: All right, if it wasn't wolves done that, maybe you
- 4:40Speaker 7: can tell me what it was.
- 4:43Speaker 6: It was a wolf, right now.
- 4:45Speaker 4: A wolf?
- 4:47Speaker 6: More than likely a whole pack.
- 4:48Speaker 4: No.
- 4:50Speaker 6: No, just one. A big one. With a splayed foot.
- 4:55Speaker 4: You trying to tell me one wolf done all that?
- 4:58Speaker 4: He's big, Guthrie.
- 5:01Speaker 8: Maybe the biggest I've seen in all my years.
- 5:04Speaker 6: Well, if you've seen him, why don't you get him?
- 5:06Speaker 4: Well, he ain't easy. He's big.
- 5:10Speaker 6: And smart.
- 5:10Speaker 8: And that That splayed foot, he'd been trapped before.
- 5:16Speaker 4: There's other ways to take a wolf.
- 5:18Speaker 8: Mean one to track, too. You don't get but a glimpse.
- 5:23Speaker 8: Not enough for a sure shot.
- 5:27Speaker 6: What are you trying to tell me?
- 5:28Speaker 4: There's a wolf that you can't catch? Maybe. This one's white, Guthrie. White?
- 5:36Speaker 6: What's that mean? Science say.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Oh.
- 5:41Speaker 6: Science say the white one's his big medicine spirit. Oh,
- 5:44Speaker 6: dang engine talk.
- 5:47Speaker 7: I'm sure you're being raised by the engines 20 years
- 5:50Speaker 7: with your more.
- 5:50Speaker 6: Engine than white. Maybe. Maybe you're dreaming this wolf up.
- 5:57Speaker 4: Maybe that's it. What do you mean?
- 6:00Speaker 7: It's almighty suspicious you clean out every wolf but this one.
- 6:06Speaker 3: And he kills might near as much as all others do.
- 6:08Speaker 4: Say it out, Guthrie.
- 6:09Speaker 6: All right, just one wolf. But you've got to stay
- 6:13Speaker 6: and hunt him till he's caught.
- 6:15Speaker 7: And pocket my money and eat my grub. And for
- 6:18Speaker 7: one lone wolf, it ain't a bad way to spend
- 6:22Speaker 7: a cold winter, is it? You saying I let him
- 6:25Speaker 7: live on purpose?
- 6:26Speaker 6: I'm saying maybe.
- 6:27Speaker 4: There ain't no wolf. Maybe it ain't a wolf at.
- 6:29Speaker 6: All ripping up my coats. Man could do that, a
- 6:32Speaker 6: man like you.
- 6:34Speaker 4: Cold-eyed, half-breathing, got no feelings.
- 6:37Speaker 7: You get out of my camp, Guthrie.
- 6:39Speaker 8: Oh, no.
- 6:40Speaker 9: No, it ain't me.
- 6:40Speaker 6: It's you that's getting out, William.
- 6:43Speaker 7: Off in my land and right now. You can't run
- 6:45Speaker 7: me off, Guthrie. This here's free land. Not for no killers,
- 6:50Speaker 7: it ain't. I seen your kind before. It's easy for
- 6:54Speaker 7: you to kill her. It don't matter, wolf or cold.
- 6:57Speaker 6: Or man.
- 6:58Speaker 8: Ain't killed me one for time, Guthrie.
- 7:03Speaker 6: But it won't go very hard. You better get along now.
- 7:10Speaker 7: I'm warning you, Webb. You get off of my land.
- 7:14Speaker 7: Not till I finish what I come for.
- 7:19Speaker 6: I'll have you run off.
- 7:21Speaker 9: How?
- 7:22Speaker 6: I'll send the dodge for the marshal, you'll see. And
- 7:26Speaker 6: if you stay, you'll end up dead, Webb. Somebody will.
- 7:36Speaker 6: That's for sure.
- 7:49Speaker 9: Matt, you know that this is the first time we've
- 7:51Speaker 9: had a chance to eat dinner quietly.
- 7:54Speaker 4: And quietly spent.
- 7:55Speaker 6: Yeah, I guess it is.
- 7:56Speaker 9: Do you ever think you'd like to be somewhere else?
- 8:01Speaker 9: You know, just travel somewhere.
- 8:03Speaker 6: Travel?
- 8:04Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 8:05Speaker 9: Places like Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore.
- 8:10Speaker 4: Why would I want to be there?
- 8:12Speaker 9: Well, I should think you'd like to see something besides
- 8:15Speaker 9: Fort Dodge and Fort Wallace, James Cross and Fort Larned.
- 8:20Speaker 9: Prairie and army camps get pretty dull, don't they?
- 8:22Speaker 4: What would I do in Washington? Call on President Grant?
- 8:26Speaker 6: Why not? You're a famous man. Oh, sure.
- 8:28Speaker 4: I couldn't wear the clothes, that's why.
- 8:31Speaker 9: Ah, I bet you'd look handsome.
- 8:33Speaker 4: I'll dude it up like that.
- 8:35Speaker 6: Oh, Bill Cody does real fine.
- 8:37Speaker 3: Look, Kitty, I know what you're after, but I'm not
- 8:40Speaker 3: going anywhere.
- 8:42Speaker 9: I would, if I had anyone to go with.
- 8:46Speaker 3: You'd be safe enough traveling by yourself.
- 8:48Speaker 9: Well, now, that isn't what I meant.
- 8:50Speaker 4: I know what you meant.
- 8:52Speaker 3: You want an excuse to go, and you'd like for
- 8:54Speaker 3: me to chaperone you.
- 8:56Speaker 6: That's it, isn't it?
- 8:58Speaker 9: Matt, you haven't had a vacation in years. Besides, there
- 9:03Speaker 9: are worse things than being my escort.
- 9:07Speaker 6: I guess there are.
- 9:08Speaker 9: Oh. Well, I knew it wouldn't last.
- 9:12Speaker 10: What?
- 9:13Speaker 4: What you doing, Miss Kitty?
- 9:14Speaker 3: Sit down, Chester.
- 9:16Speaker 4: Oh, thank you.
- 9:19Speaker 10: You all finished eating?
- 9:22Speaker 6: It looks that way, doesn't it, Chester? Had stew, huh?
- 9:27Speaker 4: That was good. Antelope or rabbit?
- 9:30Speaker 6: Antelope. With potato and red apple?
- 9:32Speaker 3: Oh, Chester, either order it or stop talking about it.
- 9:35Speaker 3: I just finished a big meal and I don't even
- 9:37Speaker 3: want to think about food.
- 9:39Speaker 6: I just said, too, Mr. Dillon, with Mr. Hightower down
- 9:42Speaker 6: at the depot. That's fine.
- 9:43Speaker 4: Buffalo State. That's fine.
- 9:46Speaker 9: You know, Mr.
- 9:46Speaker 10: Dillon, I sure do wish I was going to Wichita
- 9:49Speaker 10: on the train.
- 9:51Speaker 6: Everybody wants to go somewhere.
- 9:54Speaker 4: What?
- 9:54Speaker 9: Matt's been ouchy all during dinner, never mind him. Now,
- 9:58Speaker 9: why do you want to go to Wichita?
- 10:00Speaker 3: Well, Mr.
- 10:01Speaker 10: Hightower was telling me about them new cars that are
- 10:03Speaker 10: going to start running. Do you know you can eat
- 10:05Speaker 10: right there on the train right while you're moving along?
- 10:09Speaker 9: Now, what's that got to do with Wichita?
- 10:11Speaker 6: Well, that's where the cars is going to run to.
- 10:14Speaker 6: I see.
- 10:15Speaker 10: And then there's this fellow right there in Wichita that's
- 10:17Speaker 10: got a place you can eat right spang in the
- 10:21Speaker 10: railroad depot.
- 10:22Speaker 9: Sounds pretty fancy.
- 10:23Speaker 8: Mr.
- 10:24Speaker 10: Hightower says this fellow's going to have them all over
- 10:26Speaker 10: the country before he's through.
- 10:28Speaker 9: There you see, Matt?
- 10:29Speaker 6: Travel wouldn't be so rough after all.
- 10:32Speaker 4: Not for Chester, anyway.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Food before he starts, while he travels, and more when
- 10:37Speaker 3: he gets there.
- 10:38Speaker 8: Where are you going to go, Mr. Dillon?
- 10:40Speaker 4: I'm not going anywhere, Chester. Oh.
- 10:44Speaker 6: Oh, say, I near forgot.
- 10:46Speaker 10: There's somebody waiting in the office to see you. I
- 10:48Speaker 10: seen him when I come by.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Oh, who? That Mr.
- 10:51Speaker 10: Guthrie that cut that big spray ad out north of
- 10:53Speaker 10: Ford County.
- 10:54Speaker 6: Did he say what he wanted? No, he didn't, except
- 10:56Speaker 6: he wants to see you.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Oh, you tell him I'll be along in a few minutes, huh?
- 11:00Speaker 8: Yes, sir.
- 11:00Speaker 4: I'll go tell him right.
- 11:06Speaker 9: Now. Well, we almost made it, Matt.
- 11:10Speaker 6: What, Kitty?
- 11:12Speaker 9: I thought for once we'd get clean through a meal
- 11:14Speaker 9: without you being hauled away.
- 11:16Speaker 4: We did pretty good. I might have weakened you, though.
- 11:19Speaker 3: I might have agreed to take a train somewhere.
- 11:24Speaker 4: Come on, I'll walk you back.
- 11:25Speaker 9: No, thanks, Matt. I'll just sit here and finish my coffee.
- 11:29Speaker 6: Okay, I'll see you later. I tell you, he's a
- 11:42Speaker 6: bad one, Marshal.
- 11:43Speaker 4: Maybe so, Mr.
- 11:44Speaker 6: Guthrie. Now, now, just think of that. Whib Edmonds killing
- 11:47Speaker 6: them coals.
- 11:48Speaker 3: Now, we're not sure about that, Chester. You have any
- 11:51Speaker 3: proof it's Whib and not a wolf killing your.
- 11:53Speaker 4: Stock, Guthrie?
- 11:53Speaker 6: Well, I don't need no proof. Marshal.
- 11:57Speaker 4: Just you go take one.
- 11:59Speaker 7: Look at that half-breed there in his stinking dugout.
- 12:02Speaker 6: You'll see what he is.
- 12:03Speaker 3: Now, look, Guthrie, just because a man doesn't keep clean
- 12:05Speaker 3: or live in a house, that.
- 12:07Speaker 6: Doesn't make him a killer.
- 12:08Speaker 7: But this man is, Marshal. You can see it right
- 12:11Speaker 7: in his eyes. They're cold. They're wide open.
- 12:15Speaker 6: It's like a snake's.
- 12:16Speaker 4: You think you're just looking to measure you for your grave?
- 12:19Speaker 4: I need proof, Mr.
- 12:20Speaker 6: Guthrie.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Unless you can prove that Whib has broken some law,
- 12:23Speaker 3: there's nothing.
- 12:24Speaker 6: I can do. Well, you can run him off of
- 12:25Speaker 6: my land.
- 12:26Speaker 3: You're using that land, Guthrie, but it's not yours.
- 12:28Speaker 4: It's open range.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Whib has every right to camp there if he wants to.
- 12:32Speaker 7: I'm warning you, Marshal. You better run him off before
- 12:37Speaker 7: there's trouble.
- 12:38Speaker 3: And if you're thinking of getting up a party to
- 12:40Speaker 3: run him off.
- 12:40Speaker 6: It ain't that, Marshal.
- 12:42Speaker 7: You can bet my neighbors would be glad to cooperate.
- 12:44Speaker 4: They've been losing stock, too.
- 12:46Speaker 10: Well, everybody has, Mr.
- 12:47Speaker 6: Guthrie.
- 12:48Speaker 10: It's been an awful bad year for Wolfe.
- 12:50Speaker 3: You ought to thank Webb for cutting your losses.
- 12:53Speaker 6: All right.
- 12:55Speaker 5: All right.
- 12:56Speaker 6: But it'll be on your head, Marshal. Don't say I
- 12:58Speaker 6: didn't warn you.
- 12:59Speaker 4: About what, Guthrie?
- 13:00Speaker 6: That man hates me, Marshal. He's threatened me.
- 13:05Speaker 7: He even said it was just as easy to kill
- 13:07Speaker 7: a man as a wolf. Now, you think I'm going
- 13:10Speaker 7: to wait for that half-breed to come shoot me in
- 13:12Speaker 7: the back?
- 13:15Speaker 6: That's murder you're talking about, Mr.
- 13:17Speaker 4: Guthrie.
- 13:17Speaker 7: I'm talking about self-protection, Marshal. Now, if you don't want trouble,
- 13:24Speaker 7: you get him off my left. Reason or no reason,
- 13:27Speaker 7: just get him off.
- 13:31Speaker 8: All right.
- 13:34Speaker 4: Now, there's a riled up man, Mr.
- 13:35Speaker 9: Dillon.
- 13:36Speaker 6: He might just do it.
- 13:37Speaker 4: Yeah, he might.
- 13:38Speaker 6: Say, is it really true about Whib being Park's high end?
- 13:43Speaker 3: Well, I know he doesn't look it, Chester, but it's true.
- 13:46Speaker 3: He lived with him until he was about 20.
- 13:47Speaker 4: Maybe he should have stayed with him.
- 13:51Speaker 3: Well, any man wants to get back to his own people.
- 13:53Speaker 10: You ask me, Whib Edmonds don't quite fit in with
- 13:56Speaker 10: any people, white or Indian.
- 13:58Speaker 3: Well, I'll admit being a woofer isn't a very fancy
- 14:00Speaker 3: way to make a living, no matter what, man.
- 14:04Speaker 4: Anyway, we better ride out and have a talk with him.
- 14:06Speaker 6: In this weather?
- 14:08Speaker 3: Would you rather wait till somebody's murdered, Chester?
- 14:11Speaker 6: All right, come on.
- 14:33Speaker 10: Do we have to ride up along here, Mr.
- 14:36Speaker 5: Dillon?
- 14:36Speaker 3: Down in the draw, we'd at least be.
- 14:37Speaker 6: Out of the wind.
- 14:38Speaker 3: It's harder on the horses down there, Chester.
- 14:40Speaker 4: The snow's a lot deeper. Well, not so.
- 14:44Speaker 6: And I guess we can see further up here, too.
- 14:46Speaker 10: Not that there's anything to see. I'll bet we've missed
- 14:49Speaker 10: his dugout already.
- 14:51Speaker 6: I don't think so.
- 14:53Speaker 4: We've come an awful long ways.
- 14:55Speaker 10: That old gutter sure claims a parcel of.
- 14:58Speaker 4: Land, don't he?
- 15:01Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 15:01Speaker 4: Now, look there. Why, it's a horse.
- 15:07Speaker 6: It's a colt. Sure-standing funny, ain't it?
- 15:11Speaker 4: It's staked out, Chester. Staked out? Out here in this weather, what.
- 15:15Speaker 5: Are they for?
- 15:17Speaker 4: Bait. Wolf bait.
- 15:19Speaker 6: Oh, my goodness, that poor critter.
- 15:21Speaker 8: Get out, Chester.
- 15:23Speaker 4: Get out. Whip! Hold your fire. It's Marshal Dillon.
- 15:33Speaker 6: Now you put down that rifle and show yourself.
- 15:35Speaker 4: We're coming to talk to you.
- 15:37Speaker 7: You hear me?
- 15:39Speaker 5: I hear you.
- 15:40Speaker 4: You stay away from that horse of mine, Marshal. Why?
- 15:45Speaker 4: You spoiled my track. You ain't no race.
- 15:49Speaker 6: I don't see no track.
- 15:50Speaker 4: Take one there, all the same.
- 15:52Speaker 5: All right.
- 16:04Speaker 4: He was heading right for us, Marshal.
- 16:06Speaker 6: So you tried to shoot.
- 16:07Speaker 8: Us, huh?
- 16:08Speaker 4: I only wanted....
- 16:12Speaker 6: I wanted to down you, I could have, easy enough.
- 16:14Speaker 8: If man smell around a trap, it's important.
- 16:19Speaker 10: Well, you don't have much trouble with that, do you, Webb?
- 16:23Speaker 6: That may be, Chester.
- 16:26Speaker 8: I don't care much for man smell myself now, there's...
- 16:31Speaker 8: I didn't ask you to come here.
- 16:33Speaker 4: I came to talk to you, Wilbur.
- 16:36Speaker 6: You can talk. That's all.
- 16:39Speaker 4: The dugout's over the crest. Follow me.
- 16:42Speaker 7: You gonna leave that poor colt tied up to get at?
- 16:45Speaker 6: He won't get hurt if the trap works.
- 16:55Speaker 4: You can, uh... sit on a log there.
- 16:59Speaker 6: And outfitted for socializing.
- 17:02Speaker 4: Now, this will do fine.
- 17:03Speaker 6: There's, uh.
- 17:05Speaker 4: There's coffee.
- 17:07Speaker 6: Meat in the pot, if you want it.
- 17:08Speaker 4: Well, say, now.
- 17:09Speaker 6: Muskrat meat. Muskrat meat.
- 17:16Speaker 4: Coffee, Mr.
- 17:16Speaker 9: Dillon?
- 17:17Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks, Chester. Speak your piece, Marshal.
- 17:24Speaker 8: I can tell you right now, I ain't leaving.
- 17:27Speaker 3: You're off Guthrie's payroll, Webb. You won't get anything more
- 17:30Speaker 3: from him. I want nothing from him. Well, then why
- 17:34Speaker 3: stay here? There are plenty of other ranchers that pay
- 17:36Speaker 3: you to hunt wolves.
- 17:39Speaker 8: Well?
- 17:41Speaker 6: You're doing the talking, Marshal.
- 17:43Speaker 3: I'm only trying to find out why you want to
- 17:44Speaker 3: stay in this place. That wouldn't be that you're planning
- 17:48Speaker 3: to get Guthrie with it.
- 17:51Speaker 8: You think I kill his colts, Marshal?
- 17:55Speaker 3: You got one of them out there right now for bait.
- 17:58Speaker 6: It's different. It's the only thing that'll tempt this bigfoot wolf.
- 18:03Speaker 4: Is that the wolf you told Guthrie about?
- 18:05Speaker 6: Yeah. Yeah, and I'm gonna take him this time, Marshal.
- 18:10Speaker 6: If you didn't.
- 18:10Speaker 4: Spoil the trap, I... Webb, are you sure that's the
- 18:14Speaker 4: only reason you want to stay?
- 18:16Speaker 6: I gotta finish what I started.
- 18:19Speaker 8: I gotta get that big wolf, Marshal. Then Guthrie better
- 18:23Speaker 8: hadn't tried to stop me neither.
- 18:25Speaker 3: You mean you'd kill a man just because of a wolf?
- 18:27Speaker 6: This one is different. He's white and big.
- 18:33Speaker 3: I don't care how big or what color he is,
- 18:34Speaker 3: he's not worth a human life.
- 18:37Speaker 6: You don't understand.
- 18:38Speaker 8: This one is special, Marshal. This is the most important
- 18:44Speaker 8: wolf of.
- 18:45Speaker 6: My whole life.
- 18:45Speaker 4: But why?
- 18:48Speaker 6: He's white.
- 18:50Speaker 4: That's why.
- 18:54Speaker 3: Well, isn't a white wolf big medicine to the Indians?
- 18:58Speaker 3: I mean, aren't they superstitious, afraid to kill them?
- 19:02Speaker 4: Huh? Look, Webb, maybe you've lived.
- 19:07Speaker 6: Alone too long. Maybe you need a change.
- 19:10Speaker 4: I'm all right, Marshal.
- 19:12Speaker 6: I never thought things clearer.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Any man needs to be around other men some. Maybe
- 19:18Speaker 3: I've got no use for men, Marshal. Sure, they got
- 19:22Speaker 3: none for me. You don't get much chance, Webb. Even
- 19:25Speaker 3: before you became a woofer, when you were killing buffalo,
- 19:27Speaker 3: you wanted a loan, always.
- 19:29Speaker 6: Sure, I did. Maybe someday I'll tell you why, Marshal.
- 19:35Speaker 4: But right now, all.
- 19:37Speaker 6: I got to say is I ain't leaving here.
- 19:39Speaker 3: And if you stay, there'll be a killing. Now, we'll
- 19:43Speaker 3: spend the night here, Whib. And in the morning, you're
- 19:46Speaker 3: coming back to dodge with us.
- 20:11Speaker 6: Mr.
- 20:11Speaker 4: Jones?
- 20:12Speaker 8: Huh?
- 20:13Speaker 9: Mr.
- 20:13Speaker 6: Jones, wake up. What?
- 20:15Speaker 4: What is it, Chester?
- 20:15Speaker 8: He's gone.
- 20:16Speaker 4: What? Whib's gone.
- 20:18Speaker 6: I don't know how it happened.
- 20:19Speaker 10: I just closed my eyes for a minute, and when
- 20:21Speaker 10: I looked.
- 20:21Speaker 6: Up, he was gone.
- 20:22Speaker 4: Well, when was this? Just a couple of minutes ago.
- 20:24Speaker 6: I didn't fall asleep. I swear I didn't. He just
- 20:26Speaker 6: slipped out.
- 20:27Speaker 4: All right, all right, all right, Chester.
- 20:29Speaker 6: Chester.
- 20:30Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 20:30Speaker 6: Maybe you should have took both watches, Mr.
- 20:32Speaker 4: Gunn.
- 20:33Speaker 6: It's all right.
- 20:34Speaker 4: He can't have gotten too far. Well, there.
- 20:43Speaker 10: Are our horses. At least he didn't take them.
- 20:46Speaker 4: Wait a minute. Oh, there. You just take it easy, boy.
- 20:56Speaker 6: Take it easy.
- 20:57Speaker 4: They have to dance.
- 20:58Speaker 9: The....
- 21:00Speaker 4: Now that's it, a wolf. Come on, Chester.
- 21:03Speaker 6: Where are we going? You just follow me. Couldn't be
- 21:06Speaker 6: too hard a spot, Webb.
- 21:08Speaker 10: This moonlight on the snow makes it most as bright
- 21:10Speaker 10: as day.
- 21:11Speaker 4: Just be quiet, though.
- 21:14Speaker 5: Wait a minute.
- 21:18Speaker 4: What is it? Over there.
- 21:25Speaker 6: That's Webb.
- 21:26Speaker 10: Going down to that trap he is.
- 21:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:29Speaker 6: You reckon maybe he's caught that wolf?
- 21:31Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 21:33Speaker 6: Come on.
- 21:33Speaker 8: There's the colt.
- 21:42Speaker 6: He's still all right.
- 21:43Speaker 4: Yeah, listen to that. That's a wolf.
- 21:49Speaker 6: Where is he?
- 21:50Speaker 4: In that pit in front of the colt.
- 21:52Speaker 6: The wolf's in it?
- 21:53Speaker 4: Yeah, that's to be the way the colt's acting. Yeah,
- 21:56Speaker 4: listen to him.
- 21:58Speaker 10: When he's trying to jump out.
- 22:00Speaker 6: So he might have near made it, too.
- 22:01Speaker 4: Come on, let's move up closer.
- 22:03Speaker 6: Look.
- 22:05Speaker 4: He's got a rifle.
- 22:07Speaker 6: Why doesn't he use it? Shoot him, Webb. Shoot him. Oh,
- 22:12Speaker 6: he's just standing there.
- 22:14Speaker 4: What's the matter with you?
- 22:16Speaker 5: Shoot him.
- 22:16Speaker 4: You got a rifle?
- 22:17Speaker 7: Use it.
- 22:18Speaker 4: Yeah, we should have brought.
- 22:21Speaker 3: Ours. He's out.
- 22:22Speaker 6: The wolf's got him.
- 22:23Speaker 4: Stay back, Chester. I'm going over there with a six-gun.
- 22:26Speaker 5: What's this?
- 22:38Speaker 9: You got him, Mr.
- 22:39Speaker 4: Dillon.
- 22:40Speaker 6: He's down for good. Yeah. And so is Whib. Goodness,
- 22:47Speaker 6: he's bleeding like a stuck hog.
- 22:52Speaker 4: Whib.
- 22:54Speaker 6: Whib. If it's all over, I killed him.
- 22:58Speaker 4: Well, then, Mr.
- 22:59Speaker 6: Dillon, that will tore him up something fierce.
- 23:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:02Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 23:04Speaker 6: I'm done for, Marshal.
- 23:06Speaker 4: Why didn't you shoot him, Webb? You were standing right
- 23:09Speaker 4: there with your rifle. White wolf. It's big medicine. What
- 23:15Speaker 4: did that have to do with it?
- 23:18Speaker 6: 20 years with Cheyenne. Tried to go back being a
- 23:24Speaker 6: white man.
- 23:26Speaker 4: Never could.
- 23:28Speaker 6: Stayed on here to kill the white wolf.
- 23:33Speaker 3: You mean you wanted to kill that wolf to prove
- 23:35Speaker 3: to yourself that you'd stop thinking like an Indian?
- 23:38Speaker 8: This Cheyenne never killed a white wolf. A white wolf
- 23:45Speaker 8: is strong medicine.
- 23:49Speaker 6: I couldn't shoot.
- 23:51Speaker 8: I couldn't act like a white man.
- 23:56Speaker 6: And then.
- 24:03Speaker 4: Poor devil.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Chester, you remember how you said Whib didn't fit in
- 24:15Speaker 3: with any people, white or Indian?
- 24:19Speaker 10: Well, then I didn't know what he was up against, Mr.
- 24:22Speaker 6: Dunn.
- 24:24Speaker 8: No.
- 24:26Speaker 4: Well, he didn't fit in then.
- 24:29Speaker 6: Not until tonight, he didn't. What do you mean?
- 24:33Speaker 3: Tonight he found his people. Webb was born with Cheyenne.
- 24:38Speaker 3: And tonight he died like a Cheyenne.
