- 0:17Speaker 2: The following feature has been rated r by the motion
- 0:20Speaker 2: picture association of america it is intended for mature audiences
- 0:23Speaker 2: and parental discretion is advised.
- 0:36Speaker 3: It's showtime, folks. Enjoy the show.
- 1:02Speaker 4: Hi, John Amplis, and you're listening to Movie Meltdown, the
- 1:05Speaker 4: greatest movie geek show on Earth.
- 1:08Speaker 5: It's time for Sofa Theater.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Sofa Theater. Hey, can I get another drink down here?
- 1:36Speaker 3: I've been to prison once. I've been married twice.
- 1:39Speaker 6: I was once drafted by Lyndon Johnson and had to
- 1:43Speaker 6: live in shit-ass Mexico for two and a half years
- 1:45Speaker 6: for no reason. I've had my eye socket punched in,
- 1:49Speaker 6: a kidney taken out, and I got a bone chip
- 1:52Speaker 6: in my ankle that's never gonna heal. I've seen some
- 1:56Speaker 6: pretty shitty situations in my life, but nothing has ever
- 1:59Speaker 6: sucked more ass than this. If I'd known I was
- 2:03Speaker 6: going to have to put up with a bunch of
- 2:04Speaker 6: screaming brats pissing on my lap for 30 days out
- 2:07Speaker 6: of the year, I would have killed myself a long
- 2:09Speaker 6: time ago. Come to think of it, I still might.
- 2:18Speaker 6: Where I come from, we didn't celebrate Christmas. Not because
- 2:21Speaker 6: we were Jewish, but because my dad was a worthless,
- 2:24Speaker 6: coward fucking asshole whose idea of a present was a
- 2:26Speaker 6: daily punch to the back of the head. He did
- 2:29Speaker 6: teach me how to crack a safe, though. My dad
- 2:33Speaker 6: never did shit with his life, so he took it
- 2:35Speaker 6: out on me. You could say I'm no different, and
- 2:38Speaker 6: I'd have to say you were right. But at this point,
- 2:40Speaker 6: it's too late to start over. Funny how things work out.
- 2:43Speaker 6: It's fucking hilarious.
- 2:48Speaker 7: Please, daddy, don't get drunk this Christmas.
- 2:55Speaker 2: I don't want to see my mama cry. Please, Daddy,
- 3:04Speaker 2: don't get drunk this Christmas. I don't want to see
- 3:10Speaker 2: my mama cry.
- 3:14Speaker 8: Welcome to Movie Meltdown Sofa Theater. Once again, I am Brian.
- 3:17Speaker 3: I'm Greg.
- 3:19Speaker 9: I'm Marlene.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Now I'm... Oh, Lord. Welcome back to Movie Meltdown's Fuck
- 3:27Speaker 2: Me Santa Holiday Special. It seems quite fitting this week. So, yeah,
- 3:34Speaker 2: not only is it, you know, that special holiday special,
- 3:38Speaker 2: but this is also our third annual holiday special.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Third annual?
- 3:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Congratulations.
- 3:43Speaker 8: As of this week, it is our anniversary.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Yay.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Crossing over into the third year here. Whether we live
- 3:50Speaker 2: to see the fourth is.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Yet to be seen.
- 3:54Speaker 10: Oh.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Fallen time for the four. And for you listening at home,
- 4:00Speaker 3: it's cold in here.
- 4:01Speaker 2: It's ridiculously cold.
- 4:03Speaker 10: That's why.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Losing feeling in my feet cold.
- 4:06Speaker 11: Right.
- 4:07Speaker 10: Yep.
- 4:08Speaker 2: I did forget before because we had too many other snacks.
- 4:11Speaker 3: We have more snacks. More snacks.
- 4:14Speaker 11: Yay.
- 4:14Speaker 3: We're going to roast the dog. Oh, that's right. Uh-oh,
- 4:21Speaker 3: has this got chocolate in it, too?
- 4:24Speaker 12: Uh-oh.
- 4:25Speaker 3: I see icing and candy.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I was gonna get those stupid little sprinkle cookies,
- 4:30Speaker 2: but I'm like, does anybody even like those?
- 4:32Speaker 3: No. If this tree attacks me, I'm gonna be upset.
- 4:37Speaker 2: We'll see. So, yeah, I figured we'd celebrate Christmas the
- 4:42Speaker 2: trashiest way possible with snack cakes.
- 4:44Speaker 10: I almost got these.
- 4:45Speaker 8: This is what Ghetto Kid had for Christmas.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Are these, uh... What brand are these?
- 4:51Speaker 2: Little Debbie.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Little Debbie?
- 4:53Speaker 2: If I were plugging them, yes. Sorry.
- 4:57Speaker 3: You can delete that.
- 4:58Speaker 2: We have no heat, Little Debbie. For God's sakes, give
- 5:00Speaker 2: us money. Is it too much to ask to have
- 5:04Speaker 2: some fucking heat?
- 5:05Speaker 3: Again, calories are a measure of heat.
- 5:07Speaker 2: That's our plan.
- 5:08Speaker 9: I'm ready to go to talk about this movie.
- 5:11Speaker 10: So I can sit in my warm car.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Can we record from the car this episode? Can we
- 5:16Speaker 3: just drive around?
- 5:17Speaker 9: I'll drive around.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Let's do that. This is what it's come to.
- 5:21Speaker 10: So, this movie. Directed by Terry Zweigoff. Love Terry Zweigoff.
- 5:25Speaker 10: Director of one of my favorite movies of all time.
- 5:28Speaker 9: Ghost World. Number one favorite movie.
- 5:30Speaker 3: He wrote Ghost World too, didn't he?
- 5:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a comic. First, wasn't it? I think
- 5:35Speaker 2: he adapted it.
- 5:36Speaker 10: He and.
- 5:38Speaker 2: But I'm sure he wrote the screenplay because he re-adapted
- 5:41Speaker 2: this screenplay as well. So just to get into it,
- 5:44Speaker 2: this week's Sober Theater feature is Bad Santa. And technically
- 5:48Speaker 2: it's Badder Santa, if that helps you. And if you
- 5:50Speaker 2: want to keep up with us exactly, it's technically the
- 5:53Speaker 2: Badder Santa version.
- 5:54Speaker 9: There was like an extra scene.
- 5:56Speaker 2: There was a lot of extra.
- 5:58Speaker 9: No, not really. I mean, not from the version I saw.
- 6:02Speaker 8: I think a good portion of it is cursing.
- 6:04Speaker 2: I got the breakdown of the number of curses in
- 6:08Speaker 2: the regular version and in the badder version.
- 6:12Speaker 10: Well, you know the numbers, so I can't argue with that.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Well, I'm just, yeah, it's ridiculous, the astronomical number of cursings.
- 6:20Speaker 10: Can I just say, like, I'm strangely attracted to Billy
- 6:24Speaker 10: Bob Thornton?
- 6:24Speaker 2: Can I just say that doesn't surprise me?
- 6:27Speaker 10: Right.
- 6:29Speaker 8: The year is 2003. Director Terry Zweigoff, as you mentioned.
- 6:33Speaker 2: The plot, according to IMDb, a miserable con man and
- 6:36Speaker 2: his partner poses Santa and his little helper to rob
- 6:39Speaker 2: department stores on Christmas Eve, but they run into problems
- 6:41Speaker 2: when the con man befriends a troubled kid and the
- 6:44Speaker 2: security boss discovers the plot.
- 6:46Speaker 8: That's somewhat accurate.
- 6:48Speaker 3: For IMDb, that's pretty good.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know who wrote it, but it's not terrible.
- 6:52Speaker 2: All right, so giant spoiler alert. If you haven't had
- 6:56Speaker 2: your holiday ruined by this movie already, we are about
- 6:58Speaker 2: to ruin it as well. Aside from your affection for
- 7:03Speaker 2: Billy Bob, is that where you would like to begin?
- 7:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:06Speaker 9: I love this movie. Thurman and Merman, come on.
- 7:09Speaker 10: It's brilliant. It's hilarious. It changed my outlook on Christmas.
- 7:14Speaker 8: It actually fits right in with my outlook on Christmas.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Except you're not drinking yourself.
- 7:20Speaker 5: Well.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Is that the next step?
- 7:23Speaker 2: Probably not. I can't afford booze.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Well, that's true. It is expensive.
- 7:27Speaker 10: Yeah, that's true.
- 7:28Speaker 2: I could go roll a hobo and take his.
- 7:30Speaker 9: I mean, you can get some Mad Dog for like
- 7:33Speaker 9: a buck.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Oh, well, you know, Mad Dog's pretty high class.
- 7:38Speaker 10: Yeah, I know.
- 7:39Speaker 9: But, no, I love this movie. I think it's hilarious.
- 7:42Speaker 10: It's brilliant.
- 7:43Speaker 9: That's about all I can think of.
- 7:46Speaker 3: It certainly isn't uplifting.
- 7:49Speaker 8: Isn't it, though?
- 7:49Speaker 10: No.
- 7:49Speaker 11: No.
- 7:50Speaker 3: I mean, I do like the character arc. I mean,
- 7:53Speaker 3: he does... I think the most... The key point in
- 7:57Speaker 3: the movie is when he's sitting in the locker room.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:01Speaker 3: And, again, this spoiler alert, you know, he... I guess
- 8:04Speaker 3: the story is these con men are posing as Santa
- 8:09Speaker 3: Claus and the elf, and they're stealing everything on Christmas
- 8:12Speaker 3: Eve from the department stores. But the aforementioned little boy
- 8:16Speaker 3: that he befriends, who is, we can probably get into
- 8:19Speaker 3: more of him later, but he's the typical kid that's
- 8:22Speaker 3: being beaten up, has many, many problems. But he defends
- 8:26Speaker 3: the boy by going and beating up the bullies that
- 8:28Speaker 3: have beaten him up and which that scene of him
- 8:33Speaker 3: beating up the kid is fantastic but the best part
- 8:35Speaker 3: of the movie the moment you're like oh this is
- 8:38Speaker 3: more than just a crass movie or being someone when
- 8:41Speaker 3: he says you know I really think I'm coming around
- 8:44Speaker 3: you know I think I've turned a corner.
- 8:47Speaker 13: Yeah you fucking petite now no I'm.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Not talking about that I beat the shit out of
- 8:53Speaker 1: some kids today but it's for a purpose Made me
- 9:01Speaker 1: feel good about myself. It was like I did something
- 9:06Speaker 1: constructive with my life or something, I don't know. Like
- 9:10Speaker 1: I accomplished something.
- 9:12Speaker 3: You need many years of therapy.
- 9:14Speaker 8: I think I've turned a corner today.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Yeah, you've turned a corner today. I did something with
- 9:19Speaker 3: a purpose. I beat up some kids, and there was
- 9:21Speaker 3: a reason. I think that's the key. To me, that's
- 9:27Speaker 3: about the best moment of the movie. I mean, there's
- 9:29Speaker 3: many good moments, but that's the one that's like, oh,
- 9:32Speaker 3: I see now where this is going. That's the point
- 9:33Speaker 3: we're going for. He's changing, and still bad Santa.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Definitely.
- 9:40Speaker 10: But, I mean, he's not a rebel without a cause.
- 9:43Speaker 10: He's a rebel with a cause from that point on.
- 9:45Speaker 11: Right.
- 9:46Speaker 10: What I don't understand is how Mrs. Did she ever
- 9:49Speaker 10: actually have a name?
- 9:51Speaker 2: Mrs. Claus' sister.
- 9:52Speaker 3: Mrs.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Claus.
- 9:53Speaker 10: Yeah, I realize that. Like, most people in this barely
- 9:56Speaker 10: have a name.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Grandma.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Grandma kid thurman merman that yep but he was kid
- 10:01Speaker 2: through most of the right he's the exception of that
- 10:04Speaker 2: one mention he's the kid.
- 10:05Speaker 10: Right but uh you know she meets him in the
- 10:09Speaker 10: bar that she's bartending in And she's like, I like you.
- 10:13Speaker 9: And I'm just like, why? Why do you like this guy?
- 10:15Speaker 10: Other than your creepy fetish for guys in Santa Claus outfits.
- 10:18Speaker 3: She clearly has some issues.
- 10:20Speaker 10: Clearly, I guess, but I mean.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Okay, this is back to my point I was going
- 10:24Speaker 2: to get to earlier that I said I would return to,
- 10:27Speaker 2: which is in response to your where's mine. Yeah, okay,
- 10:31Speaker 2: I'm slightly less horrible than Billy Bob in this movie.
- 10:35Speaker 8: Where's my Lauren Graham? That's all I want to know.
- 10:38Speaker 3: No kidding.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Where's my ridiculously devoted, for no good fucking reason, completely,
- 10:43Speaker 2: utterly in love with this guy, and I don't understand why,
- 10:47Speaker 2: but blindly follows him.
- 10:49Speaker 9: And see, like.
- 10:50Speaker 10: if you know me i i can relate to her
- 10:53Speaker 10: better than most people at this table probably i can
- 10:56Speaker 10: relate to that but i mean even me i'm just
- 10:58Speaker 10: like what the fuck is wrong with you why run
- 11:02Speaker 10: run in the opposite direction i mean i guess it
- 11:05Speaker 10: worked out she got a jacuzzi and.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Shit man but you know she got a kid and a.
- 11:08Speaker 10: Kid and she loved kids and the part where she's
- 11:10Speaker 10: like do you like kids i'm like.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Why do you want to know? Do you want to
- 11:16Speaker 2: have kids with this guy?
- 11:17Speaker 3: Yes, she does.
- 11:18Speaker 11: Yikes.
- 11:19Speaker 8: That's what I think.
- 11:19Speaker 2: If there's anything that seems a little off, it is that.
- 11:24Speaker 2: It's just her character. And don't get me wrong, I
- 11:26Speaker 2: love Lauren Graham in odd ways. But I just.
- 11:29Speaker 3: In dirty ways.
- 11:31Speaker 2: No, she's almost too awesome for that. She's too cool.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Do you like the cold, Lauren? Perhaps.
- 11:39Speaker 10: Do you?
- 11:40Speaker 8: I would definitely wear a Santa Claus hat for her.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Yeah, you'd be like Santa and Jacuzzi. Do you like
- 11:44Speaker 3: the cold?
- 11:45Speaker 2: It would be a lot of snuggling involved.
- 11:48Speaker 11: Anyway.
- 11:49Speaker 9: Come up to my North Pole.
- 11:51Speaker 2: You said that one.
- 11:52Speaker 8: I know.
- 11:54Speaker 2: I did. But here's the thing. Everybody else, and I'll
- 11:56Speaker 2: get to the rest of them later, but she's the
- 11:58Speaker 2: one that just doesn't fit almost.
- 12:00Speaker 8: Like, in a way, she doesn't.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Makes sense. Because she should be... To be as messed
- 12:06Speaker 2: up as she is to be hooking up with him,
- 12:08Speaker 2: she should be way more screwed up.
- 12:10Speaker 11: Right.
- 12:11Speaker 8: Like, seemingly.
- 12:12Speaker 2: And really, I mean, there's nothing. With the exception of
- 12:14Speaker 2: her screwing him, there's nothing else about her.
- 12:17Speaker 11: No.
- 12:18Speaker 8: I mean, she's... Well, I mean, no, she's messed up.
- 12:20Speaker 2: I get that. I mean, she's definitely... She's attracted him
- 12:23Speaker 2: for no good reason. She's also an enabler because she
- 12:25Speaker 2: keeps buying him booze. She keeps showing up with more booze.
- 12:28Speaker 2: So she's not fixing the problem in any way, shape,
- 12:31Speaker 2: or form.
- 12:32Speaker 10: Here's the thing about people like that, women who are,
- 12:35Speaker 10: or people in general who are like enablers or deal
- 12:39Speaker 10: with alcoholics on a regular basis.
- 12:41Speaker 9: You can be.
- 12:42Speaker 10: Relatively normal and a relatively sweet, nice person and fall
- 12:46Speaker 10: into that. I've known lots of people that are like that.
- 12:50Speaker 10: I mean, that's what's wrong with you. That's the extent
- 12:55Speaker 10: of what's wrong with you.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Usually the alcoholic in question does a little better job.
- 12:59Speaker 2: I mean, once you get to the advanced stages of
- 13:02Speaker 2: alcoholism that he's reached by the end of this movie,
- 13:05Speaker 2: he should be hooking up with meth whores at best.
- 13:07Speaker 2: There's no way this normal girl who has a real
- 13:11Speaker 2: job and loves kids and is just well-adjusted in every
- 13:15Speaker 2: other way other than she wants to fuck him Should
- 13:17Speaker 2: be hooking up with that guy. Granted, she's got her
- 13:20Speaker 2: mental issues. I understand that.
- 13:22Speaker 3: If she's that fucked up, she shouldn't look so well
- 13:25Speaker 3: put together.
- 13:25Speaker 8: No, she should not be. And really, I mean, just
- 13:27Speaker 8: in general. Why the hell is she working at that bar?
- 13:30Speaker 2: Right. Well, just because any bar that would be frequented
- 13:33Speaker 2: by that guy, she should be in a way more
- 13:36Speaker 2: ghetto bar than that.
- 13:37Speaker 3: Right.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Again, it should be the type of person he wouldn't
- 13:40Speaker 2: be hooking up with at this point.
- 13:42Speaker 3: She should look more like Cloris Leachman's.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Character than Lauren Graham. At this point, yes.
- 13:48Speaker 3: But you've got to sell a movie, so.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I don't know. I think that was
- 13:52Speaker 2: the one thing that just felt a little thrown in
- 13:55Speaker 2: because they needed a romantic angle. Because they had this
- 13:58Speaker 2: weird idea of wouldn't it be funny if there was
- 14:00Speaker 2: a chick with a Santa fetish. And they worked that
- 14:03Speaker 2: idea in there and then didn't really round her character
- 14:05Speaker 2: out in any way. Which is weird because everybody else
- 14:08Speaker 2: is pretty amazingly well-rounded. More than you would expect in
- 14:11Speaker 2: a movie like this.
- 14:12Speaker 10: Yeah. Well, see, you know, I'm going to have to
- 14:14Speaker 10: disagree with you there, though, just because, like, I know
- 14:18Speaker 10: a lot of people like that. And I've, like, been
- 14:21Speaker 10: pretty close to being a person like that myself. Like,
- 14:24Speaker 10: well-adjusted women who are totally normal in all other aspects.
- 14:29Speaker 10: go for that it's like a weird mothering thing that
- 14:32Speaker 10: i mean like there are people exactly like that and
- 14:34Speaker 10: her character was spot on.
- 14:36Speaker 2: So obviously i'm not preying on the right level of
- 14:39Speaker 2: depraved women.
- 14:40Speaker 3: You need to up your game a little bit you
- 14:42Speaker 3: need to shoot aim.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Higher actually aim lower get rid of all your morals
- 14:47Speaker 2: and uh throw that shit out the window and go
- 14:49Speaker 2: start hitting the bars.
- 14:50Speaker 3: I have there there have been many times in my
- 14:53Speaker 3: life now let you say that really that i've like
- 14:55Speaker 3: What the fuck does she see in that guy?
- 14:57Speaker 2: I think that a lot. But these are pretty polar opposites,
- 15:01Speaker 2: which I'm not saying it doesn't ever happen.
- 15:03Speaker 8: I'm just saying.
- 15:04Speaker 9: I mean, that's a pretty common type, though.
- 15:07Speaker 10: I mean, like, I'm serious. It's like if you've ever
- 15:11Speaker 10: been to an Al-Anon meeting, it's always like the sweetest,
- 15:15Speaker 10: otherwise well-adjusted people with, like, good heads on their shoulders,
- 15:18Speaker 10: good jobs. who just fall into taking care of these, like,
- 15:22Speaker 10: pathetic people. And, you know, it's like, you can understand
- 15:25Speaker 10: it if it happens, like, at a certain stage. But,
- 15:27Speaker 10: I mean, like, you know, like, my best friend's mom is, like,
- 15:31Speaker 10: you know, she's the person I go to for motherly advice.
- 15:34Speaker 10: A very intelligent, like, well-read woman. And, you know, she's
- 15:38Speaker 10: that type of person, you know.
- 15:39Speaker 2: She fell into that same trap.
- 15:41Speaker 10: Not like she's, like, a smoking hot babe now, like
- 15:44Speaker 10: Lauren Graham.
- 15:44Speaker 8: Well, she's a mom type now.
- 15:46Speaker 10: She was in her day.
- 15:47Speaker 2: She was in her day.
- 15:48Speaker 9: Yeah, but, uh.
- 15:49Speaker 10: You know, that's just the type. That's how people are. Like, beautiful, normal,
- 15:55Speaker 10: well-adjusted women.
- 15:56Speaker 11: Love.
- 15:57Speaker 9: Fucked up.
- 15:58Speaker 12: Retards.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Obviously.
- 16:00Speaker 3: What I think she's saying, Brian, is you need a
- 16:01Speaker 3: drinking problem.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Yeah, you need a drinking problem. Gee, because everything else
- 16:04Speaker 2: has been going so great up to now. How about
- 16:06Speaker 2: if I top it off as a ridiculous drinking problem?
- 16:11Speaker 10: But, I mean, just, I mean, I know women who
- 16:13Speaker 10: are like that. So, I just, I think her character
- 16:17Speaker 10: is spot on. That's actually, like, that's.
- 16:20Speaker 2: How it is yeah i mean there are cases it
- 16:23Speaker 2: could be like that she's just so blind to everything
- 16:26Speaker 2: like the fact that she doesn't question why are you
- 16:28Speaker 2: living in a house with a little kid and a
- 16:30Speaker 2: crazy old comatose lady yeah she just goes along with
- 16:33Speaker 2: everything and he's not that good of a con man
- 16:36Speaker 2: is the problem no i mean.
- 16:37Speaker 10: I definitely like want to shake her and be like
- 16:39Speaker 10: what the fuck is.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Wrong with you yeah me too although I'd want to
- 16:43Speaker 3: give that kid a hug and make him a sandwich.
- 16:45Speaker 3: I'm not saying I wouldn't hang out with the kid.
- 16:48Speaker 2: The kid's awesome. And he's not doing anything weird with
- 16:51Speaker 2: the kid. He's warping his brain, but he's not going
- 16:53Speaker 2: down the one road that they don't go down. Everything
- 16:56Speaker 2: else is pretty much horrible from step one. And that's
- 17:00Speaker 2: what I was going to say. I mean, that's like
- 17:01Speaker 2: you were saying it, you know, you could tell what
- 17:03Speaker 2: type of movie it was trying to be by that
- 17:05Speaker 2: far in. I, to me, it was like right off
- 17:08Speaker 2: the bat, like the immediate tone. And it helps that
- 17:11Speaker 2: it's Terry's white off because he, I, I love that guy.
- 17:15Speaker 8: I love everything he's done.
- 17:17Speaker 2: And I really like his approach to things because it's
- 17:19Speaker 2: so anti Hollywood, if nothing else, but it's just also
- 17:24Speaker 2: very dark and depraved, but it's sort of unapologetic about
- 17:27Speaker 2: it either.
- 17:28Speaker 9: And that's another thing.
- 17:29Speaker 10: That's, You know, and you got to think about it
- 17:31Speaker 10: like this when it comes to like hilarious and not,
- 17:35Speaker 10: you know, there's like stereotypes that are in all movies,
- 17:38Speaker 10: you know, like your typical run of the mill movies.
- 17:41Speaker 10: But these are like obscure type people. You know, like,
- 17:44Speaker 10: think Seymour in Ghost World. He's fucking dead on. Yeah.
- 17:48Speaker 10: With those type of people.
- 17:49Speaker 8: That one, yeah.
- 17:50Speaker 2: I mean, that's so close. And he really is.
- 17:51Speaker 10: You would just, I mean, I swear, you would just
- 17:53Speaker 10: have to know more people like that. He's, that character
- 17:55Speaker 10: is dead on.
- 17:56Speaker 8: No, I'm, I'm, Tam, I am that character.
- 17:58Speaker 2: What are you talking about?
- 17:59Speaker 3: No, I'm not talking about Seymour.
- 18:00Speaker 9: I'm talking about Lauren Graham's character.
- 18:01Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 18:02Speaker 10: You'd just have to know more people. She really is
- 18:03Speaker 10: dead on. You know, the same with, in Art School Confidential, the, pretentious.
- 18:07Speaker 10: I know so many.
- 18:08Speaker 2: People like that. That's another one I really love of
- 18:11Speaker 2: his and got no respect at all and was horribly mismarketed.
- 18:15Speaker 2: I think he is so underrated as a director. His
- 18:19Speaker 2: stuff isn't always perfect. It's got its little issues here
- 18:21Speaker 2: and there, but he's just so much more talented and
- 18:24Speaker 2: solid than just about anybody else working. He's just not
- 18:28Speaker 2: up the mainstream alley and I don't think he ever
- 18:30Speaker 2: will be. It's weird that I'm surprised he made this
- 18:34Speaker 2: because even this seems like Initially, they were going for something.
- 18:38Speaker 2: I guess not, because the Coen brothers had something to
- 18:40Speaker 2: do with it from day one. They came up with
- 18:42Speaker 2: the weird story. So all of their stuff is pretty
- 18:44Speaker 2: dark and twisted, too. But I don't know.
- 18:47Speaker 8: It just seems like it is one of those that, like,
- 18:50Speaker 8: what were they thinking? Who made this movie?
- 18:53Speaker 3: Right.
- 18:53Speaker 2: And I'm not complaining, because I think it's pretty damn
- 18:55Speaker 2: impressive in many, many parts of it. But what person
- 19:00Speaker 2: in what studio was sitting there and listened to this
- 19:03Speaker 2: pitch and read this script and was just like, okay...
- 19:06Speaker 2: People are going to love this at Christmas time.
- 19:09Speaker 3: Well, you know, there is a lot of people that
- 19:13Speaker 3: are disenfranchised about Christmas.
- 19:15Speaker 2: There are, but they're usually not working in a studio.
- 19:17Speaker 3: Well, no, that's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying
- 19:20Speaker 3: is there is Christmas overload.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 19:26Speaker 3: And there is a market for people who, a niche
- 19:30Speaker 3: group of people who, Right, exactly. And this is everything
- 19:38Speaker 3: that you could hate, you know, from the peer pressure
- 19:41Speaker 3: of wanting to decorate your street to, presents. Even the
- 19:48Speaker 3: whole mystique of the kid knows he's not Santa Claus.
- 19:52Speaker 3: And that reveal later on.
- 19:53Speaker 2: But he goes along with it.
- 19:54Speaker 3: But he's going along with it, exactly. And it's the
- 19:57Speaker 3: same thing with most of the world, the Christian world.
- 20:00Speaker 3: They know Santa's not real, but they go along with
- 20:02Speaker 3: it because of what they get out of it. It's
- 20:06Speaker 3: all a lie, and we just do that to tell
- 20:08Speaker 3: ourselves these things. And so, well, first of all, if
- 20:11Speaker 3: you've got the Coen brothers that are executive producing it,
- 20:14Speaker 3: who gives a fuck? You know, it's dark. So, you know.
- 20:19Speaker 2: I'm sure that's really the only... Because, I mean, look
- 20:21Speaker 2: at all these other projects. Nothing really pulls in huge names.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Nothing ever makes huge box office. So, I think that's
- 20:27Speaker 2: the reason something this weird got made. Well, I don't know.
- 20:30Speaker 7: I mean.
- 20:32Speaker 10: If you think about it, like, in terms of the storyline,
- 20:35Speaker 10: it's weird. But Average Man, it's just funny. I mean,
- 20:40Speaker 10: it's straight up funny. Funny on a level that anyone
- 20:43Speaker 10: can understand. Take it for what you will and read
- 20:45Speaker 10: into it as far as you want. But, like, it's...
- 20:47Speaker 10: I mean, any fucking retard watching Blue Collar Comedy Hour
- 20:51Speaker 10: can fucking find humor in this. I mean, I remember
- 20:53Speaker 10: seeing the commercials for this when it was in theaters,
- 20:56Speaker 10: and it was hilarious.
- 20:57Speaker 9: I mean, that's what drew people in.
- 20:59Speaker 2: It's just a funny movie. That's probably how they marketed it, yeah.
- 21:02Speaker 2: How they got anybody to come to this. But then
- 21:04Speaker 2: once they get there, I mean, they do people with
- 21:06Speaker 2: trailers all the time. So once you get into this, Yeah,
- 21:09Speaker 2: I can see people still getting laughs at him cursing
- 21:11Speaker 2: at a kid and hordes of kids and the other
- 21:15Speaker 2: god-awful things that he does in this, but there's still
- 21:17Speaker 2: a level where this is just so dark. For me,
- 21:22Speaker 2: that's what I love about it, is that it doesn't
- 21:25Speaker 2: pull any punches, anything. It just really never pulls back
- 21:29Speaker 2: on anything, and that's why I think it's amazing. It's
- 21:33Speaker 2: like from the first scene there, when you've got your
- 21:36Speaker 2: lead actor... stumbling out into an alley with Chopin playing
- 21:40Speaker 2: in the background while he vomits in this dank alley.
- 21:45Speaker 2: That's a pretty good idea of where you're going with
- 21:46Speaker 2: this movie. And right off the bat, it's just like,
- 21:48Speaker 2: this is heading down a dark, depraved little alley here,
- 21:52Speaker 2: and it never really comes back.
- 21:54Speaker 14: No.
- 21:54Speaker 3: And it is, you know, when you talk about dark,
- 21:57Speaker 3: and I'm not saying that just because of the name,
- 21:59Speaker 3: but it is a very film noir setup because it
- 22:06Speaker 3: is that almost that character, okay, this is my... I
- 22:10Speaker 3: want out. I want out of the system. This is
- 22:12Speaker 3: my last crime.
- 22:13Speaker 2: One last time.
- 22:14Speaker 3: One last crime. And every single... That is like this
- 22:18Speaker 3: standard cookie-cutter film noir. It keeps roping me back in.
- 22:22Speaker 2: I'm out, and your partner's like, oh, come on, one
- 22:24Speaker 2: more time. I got this. This one's going to be
- 22:26Speaker 2: the big score, and then you.
- 22:27Speaker 8: Can get out.
- 22:29Speaker 2: It does, and it feels... Very much, it feels like
- 22:31Speaker 2: that setup-wise, but even the way.
- 22:35Speaker 2: It's like when you see that big shootout in the
- 22:37Speaker 2: store at the end, when he does that little piece
- 22:40Speaker 2: where he runs up towards the camera and is hiding
- 22:41Speaker 2: around the corner, it's taken out of freaking film noir.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Several of them, almost that exact shot is taken out
- 22:49Speaker 2: of old film noir.
- 22:50Speaker 8: So it definitely... Ties into that.
- 22:52Speaker 2: But again, this is like a level of film noir
- 22:54Speaker 2: that they could not have touched back in the day.
- 22:57Speaker 8: It's so hopeless.
- 22:58Speaker 3: I don't even know if... I mean, it would be
- 23:02Speaker 3: a completely different movie had the Coen brothers directed it
- 23:04Speaker 3: as well.
- 23:04Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 23:05Speaker 3: Because it would have been a lot less... overtly funny
- 23:10Speaker 3: and and more subtly funny and i i think it
- 23:13Speaker 3: would have been too much of a down.
- 23:15Speaker 2: It could have gone either way because they're so hit
- 23:17Speaker 2: and miss it's like they're they're totally serious or they're
- 23:19Speaker 2: just like they throw out that one and every seven
- 23:22Speaker 2: years that's just zany comedy that right almost doesn't even
- 23:25Speaker 2: fit them anymore we get the exception of raising arizona
- 23:27Speaker 2: which is fucking awesome but so many of the other
- 23:30Speaker 2: ones i'm just like wait, what are you doing here?
- 23:33Speaker 2: It's almost not what, it's not their strength anymore. And
- 23:37Speaker 2: I don't know that, I mean, maybe they can come
- 23:38Speaker 2: back and do something else that's more along those lines.
- 23:41Speaker 2: But yeah, it would be weird to see what they
- 23:44Speaker 2: would have done with this had they just handled it
- 23:46Speaker 2: completely on their own.
- 23:47Speaker 11: Right.
- 23:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I was going to point something out because I
- 23:49Speaker 3: noticed watching it this time, and I've been, most of
- 23:54Speaker 3: it I've seen in the pg-ish versions like comedy central
- 23:57Speaker 3: versions so and i've seen parts of it right should
- 24:00Speaker 3: be a half an hour right Billy Bob Thornton either
- 24:03Speaker 3: is an unbelievably exceptional actor or he was drunk throughout
- 24:09Speaker 3: the entire movie.
- 24:10Speaker 2: It was both.
- 24:11Speaker 11: Oh.
- 24:12Speaker 8: I mean, you've seen him on screen.
- 24:14Speaker 3: Sure.
- 24:15Speaker 2: That's one thing I will give everybody in this, especially
- 24:18Speaker 2: our two main guys here. I mean, as ridiculous as
- 24:21Speaker 2: some of this language is, as over the top as
- 24:23Speaker 2: some of the obscenities are, some of the crazy things
- 24:26Speaker 2: they make them say, I buy everything that comes out.
- 24:29Speaker 8: And I was watching it this time. Even Tony Cox.
- 24:31Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Sidekick, if you will, but really he's the one running
- 24:34Speaker 2: the whole damn show, so he's the one in charge.
- 24:36Speaker 11: Right.
- 24:36Speaker 2: But, yeah, I mean, both of them. Like, I don't
- 24:40Speaker 2: think they're weird caricatures. I think both of them really
- 24:44Speaker 2: seem like real characters and come off like these guys exist. And,
- 24:49Speaker 2: you know, as fucked up as that is, that's the
- 24:51Speaker 2: kind of world we live in. Both of these guys
- 24:53Speaker 2: are out there right now. Many, many of them. And,
- 24:57Speaker 2: I don't know, all of the characters seem like they
- 24:59Speaker 2: kind of, especially those two, though. I mean, they're just so...
- 25:02Speaker 2: dark and depraved and don't back off from any of that.
- 25:06Speaker 2: It stays so true to that throughout the movie.
- 25:09Speaker 13: You are by far the dumbest or pathetic piece of
- 25:12Speaker 13: maggot-eating shit that has ever slid from a human being's
- 25:16Speaker 13: hairy ass. What if the kid has one of those
- 25:19Speaker 13: fucking playdates they have now?
- 25:21Speaker 3: Are you shitting me? The kid don't have any friends, okay?
- 25:24Speaker 4: You don't even have an imaginary friend as a kid
- 25:25Speaker 4: unless you ditched him. He lives with his drooling asshole grandmother.
- 25:30Speaker 4: Since we're out in front of TV all the time.
- 25:31Speaker 4: You think she's gonna rat me out? She opened her
- 25:34Speaker 4: ass on the last Tuesday.
- 25:37Speaker 10: You fucker.
- 25:40Speaker 3: Jesus Christ, is everything fucking sex with you?
- 25:43Speaker 8: With me?
- 25:44Speaker 10: I fuck one person.
- 25:45Speaker 13: I ain't out there Syria fornicating, trying to float my liver,
- 25:48Speaker 13: drinking myself silly because I can't stand what a piece
- 25:50Speaker 13: of shit I am.
- 25:52Speaker 6: What are you, Sigwin Sautoff fucking Freud?
- 25:55Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right, shit for brains. Go ahead, talk about
- 25:58Speaker 2: my hype.
- 25:58Speaker 13: Make it about something safe, because you're an emotional fucking cripple.
- 26:02Speaker 13: Your soul is dog shit. Every single fucking thing about.
- 26:05Speaker 2: You is ugly. And it's another one of those, there's
- 26:07Speaker 2: no hero whatsoever. Like, Billy Bob never really crosses that line.
- 26:13Speaker 2: He has moments of clarity. He tries to redeem himself
- 26:16Speaker 2: a little bit here and there. But for the most part,
- 26:19Speaker 2: he's still a horrible person by the end of the movie.
- 26:21Speaker 2: It's like, it doesn't change anything he tries to come
- 26:25Speaker 2: around in little ways but he never really becomes the
- 26:28Speaker 2: hero I mean the only thing we have in this
- 26:31Speaker 2: movie really is the kid and even the kid's fucked
- 26:34Speaker 2: up there are no characters that aren't massively fucked up
- 26:37Speaker 2: in this movie it's a.
- 26:38Speaker 10: Little better at the end I think though it's a happy.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Ending it's one of those I almost I kind of
- 26:45Speaker 2: wish they wouldn't have gone there I really like it
- 26:46Speaker 2: ending at the porch and I'll leave it that way
- 26:49Speaker 2: but I mean if you know and that to me
- 26:51Speaker 2: feels like the studio might have stepped in.
- 26:54Speaker 8: It might have crossed that line.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Into too dark. But because you'll notice, you never see
- 26:57Speaker 2: him in any of the rest of that. It's nothing
- 26:59Speaker 2: but voiceover. And really, everything else that happens in there
- 27:02Speaker 2: could have taken place. Were he there or not, everything
- 27:05Speaker 2: else that happened could have happened regardless of what happened.
- 27:08Speaker 2: So to me, I would almost want to see if
- 27:11Speaker 2: that's the way Zygoth wrote it is.
- 27:13Speaker 2: With it ending really, really fucking dark. And the studio went, okay,
- 27:18Speaker 2: you can say fuck 170 times, but you can't take
- 27:21Speaker 2: it down that far at the end. You can't end
- 27:24Speaker 2: it on that note.
- 27:26Speaker 3: I don't think it makes it any more dark, honestly.
- 27:29Speaker 3: It's fucked up either way.
- 27:32Speaker 11: But.
- 27:34Speaker 3: If he dies in that moment of that one good
- 27:38Speaker 3: act of taking the kid, the elephant.
- 27:40Speaker 2: It almost redeems him.
- 27:41Speaker 3: It's a redemption. Yeah. So I think it's almost... That's
- 27:45Speaker 3: almost the nicer Hollywood... Okay, he's done. He's no longer suffering.
- 27:50Speaker 3: He's no longer hurting anybody. And he completed his life
- 27:53Speaker 3: by doing a good act.
- 27:54Speaker 10: So.
- 27:55Speaker 2: In a way, I mean, it's still you could have
- 27:56Speaker 2: that that legacy of now the kid is fucked up
- 27:59Speaker 2: and trying to be like him. That's a touch of,
- 28:02Speaker 2: you know, the kind of screw you to that ending with.
- 28:05Speaker 2: But if you left it with him, you know, going
- 28:07Speaker 2: out to be taking him out at the end of
- 28:08Speaker 2: the movie.
- 28:09Speaker 8: But yeah, I see what you're saying.
- 28:12Speaker 2: It almost does have a different dark twist because in
- 28:15Speaker 2: a way, he won. Completely and utterly. He got away
- 28:20Speaker 2: with everything. He's not doing any time. He gets the girl.
- 28:23Speaker 2: He's with the kid who's not as fucked up as
- 28:25Speaker 2: he was in a way, kind of, sort of. right
- 28:28Speaker 2: so i mean he's at least starting to you know
- 28:31Speaker 2: be a real person at this point and not the
- 28:33Speaker 2: messed up version that he was so i mean yeah
- 28:36Speaker 2: in a way it's almost more scary than this way
- 28:40Speaker 2: because again it's more sad and messed up because there
- 28:44Speaker 2: is no horror attack it it was a second and
- 28:46Speaker 2: then it turns around and he's like he does throughout
- 28:48Speaker 2: the entire movie he turns around and goes right back
- 28:50Speaker 2: to being bad again right he's back on that same
- 28:53Speaker 2: train and and He's still, like, at the end of
- 28:56Speaker 2: the movie, he never really leaves, he never fully redeems
- 28:59Speaker 2: himself in any way.
- 29:00Speaker 3: Well, and the, I'm going to get off without any,
- 29:05Speaker 3: you know, punishment, that... That's kind of cheesy.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Seems a little.
- 29:10Speaker 3: You know, it's like, well, there's no way he'd get away.
- 29:13Speaker 2: He must have had a really good lawyer.
- 29:15Speaker 3: Right, right.
- 29:16Speaker 2: To get away with nothing. But again, I mean, he
- 29:19Speaker 2: talks about how the press got a hold of it. So,
- 29:20Speaker 2: I mean, sometimes, shit, that happens.
- 29:23Speaker 3: That's true.
- 29:24Speaker 2: So, yeah, people walk away.
- 29:26Speaker 10: They did... pursue and shoot an unarmed Santa in the back.
- 29:30Speaker 2: In front of children.
- 29:31Speaker 3: In front of children.
- 29:32Speaker 10: True. I mean, it hasn't happened in real life probably, honestly.
- 29:35Speaker 8: You could, yeah.
- 29:35Speaker 10: I mean, all he did was rob banks. He didn't
- 29:37Speaker 10: kill anyone, so.
- 29:38Speaker 8: And he turned the other guy in.
- 29:39Speaker 2: So really, he could make a deal with the lawyer
- 29:41Speaker 2: and find a way to be like, sell, you.
- 29:44Speaker 8: Know, the other guy down the river.
- 29:45Speaker 3: Well, also, if he's the IP, he sold his buddy out.
- 29:48Speaker 2: It's possible. It's the scary thing. To do as much
- 29:51Speaker 2: damage as he did and walk away scot-free.
- 29:53Speaker 3: You're right.
- 29:54Speaker 11: Wow. Oh, man.
- 29:57Speaker 2: So I don't know. I mean, the whole thing still,
- 30:00Speaker 2: I mean, as much as it's that film noir structure,
- 30:03Speaker 2: it's such a character piece. I mean, it is without
- 30:08Speaker 2: Billy Bob Thornton.
- 30:08Speaker 8: I mean, I don't know.
- 30:10Speaker 2: And it's weird because they tried to cast other people.
- 30:12Speaker 2: And I can't imagine anybody else doing this.
- 30:15Speaker 3: Who else did they try to cast?
- 30:16Speaker 2: They were trying to get Bill Murray cast. Who does
- 30:19Speaker 2: have a weird dark side. I love Bill Murray. I
- 30:22Speaker 2: love Bill Murray, especially in his serious stuff now. He's
- 30:25Speaker 2: found a way to make it work.
- 30:27Speaker 3: Was this before or after Lost in Translation?
- 30:30Speaker 2: He didn't take this to do Lost in Translation. So
- 30:33Speaker 2: he was looking to do that kind of role. He
- 30:35Speaker 2: wanted to do something... After Lost in Translation. I can
- 30:39Speaker 2: see it. If it would have been right after or
- 30:41Speaker 2: at the same time, that's a good.
- 30:43Speaker 3: caring.
- 30:44Speaker 2: But it's still hard to take him that seriously. To me,
- 30:47Speaker 2: Billy Bob Thornton seems like he kind of.
- 30:49Speaker 3: Could be this guy.
- 30:51Speaker 2: And going back to what you were saying, he did
- 30:53Speaker 2: admit to being intoxicated during the shooting of a good
- 30:56Speaker 2: amount of this movie.
- 30:58Speaker 3: You can tell. You can tell. He looks, especially in
- 31:02Speaker 3: that first scene, I was like, oh, he's got to
- 31:03Speaker 3: be drunk. He's got to be drunk.
- 31:05Speaker 8: And you can see that coming from him.
- 31:07Speaker 2: It seems so natural coming from Billy Bob Thornton.
- 31:10Speaker 8: But I don't know.
- 31:11Speaker 2: I mean, Bill Murray is so funny. And just the
- 31:14Speaker 2: visual of him is so funny that I don't know
- 31:16Speaker 2: how much I would buy it.
- 31:17Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 31:17Speaker 2: The other big one that they had that I'm just like, oh.
- 31:20Speaker 3: God, no.
- 31:21Speaker 2: They listed Jack Nicholson.
- 31:23Speaker 3: Oh, that would have been horrible. Yeah.
- 31:25Speaker 2: I mean, like, again, talk about somebody who would be
- 31:28Speaker 2: chewing up the scenery. And not that Billy Bob doesn't
- 31:31Speaker 2: do some crazy over-the-top stuff. But, again, I'd buy it
- 31:33Speaker 2: coming from him. I think he really– Seems like he
- 31:36Speaker 2: would be, and if Hollywood didn't come along, he might
- 31:39Speaker 2: be this kind of guy.
- 31:40Speaker 11: Right.
- 31:40Speaker 2: And still could turn out that way, really. He's done
- 31:42Speaker 2: some weird shit in his life.
- 31:44Speaker 10: I can't imagine there being anyone better for this role.
- 31:48Speaker 8: And that's why I can't believe they didn't conceive it
- 31:50Speaker 8: with him in mind.
- 31:51Speaker 10: I know.
- 31:51Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like it was.
- 31:52Speaker 10: Written for him.
- 31:53Speaker 3: Could work in this role. He's not a big enough
- 31:55Speaker 3: actor for it, but I think Steve Zahn could knock
- 31:57Speaker 3: it out of the park. Maybe he'd be too funny,
- 32:01Speaker 3: but I think he seems like the kind of actor...
- 32:03Speaker 3: I was thinking of someone that was maybe... That you
- 32:07Speaker 3: wouldn't think of, but would.
- 32:11Speaker 3: Because when he was in Rescue Dawn, did you happen
- 32:15Speaker 3: to see it? I still haven't seen it.
- 32:16Speaker 2: I've heard he's pretty decent.
- 32:17Speaker 3: He knocked that out of the park. Robert Downey Jr.
- 32:18Speaker 9: I'm just kidding.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Oh, my God. I'm just kidding.
- 32:21Speaker 2: See, there's way worse.
- 32:24Speaker 8: Because that's the thing.
- 32:24Speaker 2: I was like, I'm kind of glad this has got
- 32:26Speaker 2: a few years on it. Because if they made it now.
- 32:28Speaker 3: It would be Robert Downey Jr.
- 32:30Speaker 2: No, if they made it now, I would almost guarantee
- 32:33Speaker 2: they would try to give it to Adam Sandler. Yeah. And, God,
- 32:36Speaker 2: he would fuck it up.
- 32:37Speaker 3: No, no, no.
- 32:37Speaker 10: It would be Zach Galifianakis.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:39Speaker 2: Well at this point yeah it actually would if a
- 32:41Speaker 2: year ago it would have been johnny rogan maybe yeah
- 32:46Speaker 2: before yeah before he did the crazy cop movie because
- 32:49Speaker 2: that's the same but i was thinking worst case scenario
- 32:51Speaker 2: well i don't know adam sandler it's like a tie
- 32:53Speaker 2: because the other one is they would give it to
- 32:54Speaker 2: kevin james and i'm like i don't even hate kevin
- 32:57Speaker 2: james he just makes terrible the what the fuck is
- 33:00Speaker 2: that he was sick uh the mall cop Yeah, Paul Blart. See?
- 33:05Speaker 2: That's how casting is working now. They would give it
- 33:07Speaker 2: to somebody like him. And, again, he just can't make
- 33:11Speaker 2: a good movie to save his life.
- 33:12Speaker 3: Or Russell Graham. That would be bad. Oh, God. Please, no.
- 33:15Speaker 2: Oh, oh.
- 33:17Speaker 10: I hate to break it to you guys, but I
- 33:19Speaker 10: might be watching Get Under the Greek tonight for.
- 33:21Speaker 2: The third time. That's your own fault.
- 33:24Speaker 10: I just love Jonas Hill so much. Oh, Lord.
- 33:27Speaker 2: I'd be glad they didn't give it to him, either.
- 33:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:30Speaker 9: I don't know that I don't.
- 33:32Speaker 10: I think what made it so funny is that Billy
- 33:34Speaker 10: Bob Thornton is not a fat man.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Right. I was going to say, that's what I was like,
- 33:39Speaker 2: that's why it would.
- 33:40Speaker 8: Be stupid for them to give it to somebody like
- 33:41Speaker 8: Kevin James because.
- 33:42Speaker 2: That's the joke.
- 33:42Speaker 8: Look, he's a fat guy.
- 33:43Speaker 3: He's Santa.
- 33:44Speaker 2: They play that stupid joke with him in everything he does.
- 33:47Speaker 11: And he is.
- 33:49Speaker 3: Even skinnier than Billy Bob Thornton normally is, too. I mean,
- 33:52Speaker 3: he just looks even thinner than he normally is.
- 33:54Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, the visual is kind of striking because
- 33:57Speaker 2: not only is he just dirty and gross and falling
- 33:59Speaker 2: down drunk, but this, like, stick-thin, 98-pound freaking version of
- 34:03Speaker 2: Billy Bob Thornton with this Santa suit hanging off of him.
- 34:07Speaker 8: He doesn't even wear it.
- 34:08Speaker 2: He's just got it draped on him most of the movie,
- 34:11Speaker 2: so it's... That's what made it so funny. It is, yeah.
- 34:14Speaker 2: And that's, again, why I think this version worked, not
- 34:16Speaker 2: what they would probably do to it if they recast
- 34:20Speaker 2: it now.
- 34:21Speaker 3: It would have been as good as it gets with
- 34:23Speaker 3: an alcoholic instead of a.
- 34:25Speaker 10: Alec Baldwin.
- 34:28Speaker 2: Okay, they could make that funny with Alec Baldwin now,
- 34:31Speaker 2: but it would not.
- 34:31Speaker 8: Be the same movie.
- 34:33Speaker 2: It would be ridiculous, but it might be funny.
- 34:35Speaker 10: I don't know. I'd watch it.
- 34:36Speaker 3: He was in... He played... I mean, a dirty, nasty
- 34:41Speaker 3: character in Cat in the Hat. Oh, yeah.
- 34:45Speaker 2: I've avoided that so far.
- 34:46Speaker 3: No, it's not, because it's a lot of Mike Myers.
- 34:50Speaker 3: That's what I was afraid of. But Alec Baldwin in
- 34:53Speaker 3: it is, I mean, he goes out on a limb
- 34:58Speaker 3: and really makes himself look very bad in that movie.
- 35:01Speaker 3: So that... It could work. It could work.
- 35:07Speaker 2: Well, that's what I almost give Billy Bob Thornton credit
- 35:09Speaker 2: for for this. I mean, there is no vanity in
- 35:11Speaker 2: this movie.
- 35:12Speaker 11: No.
- 35:13Speaker 2: From that first shot, he looks like shit, and it
- 35:16Speaker 2: never gets any better. I still thought I'm attractive.
- 35:19Speaker 8: Well, that, again, doesn't surprise me.
- 35:20Speaker 2: But I'm just saying, I mean, you could not give
- 35:23Speaker 2: a lot... I mean, can you imagine a lot of
- 35:25Speaker 2: the pretty boy, lady men doing something like this? Because
- 35:28Speaker 2: most of them, unless they're looking to get that Oscar,
- 35:30Speaker 2: unless they're really trying to sell it, they wouldn't even try,
- 35:33Speaker 2: because it would... And again, a movie as messed up
- 35:35Speaker 2: as this is could potentially kill your career, really.
- 35:38Speaker 8: I mean, it's got.
- 35:40Speaker 2: such a weird twisted story that it could be one
- 35:43Speaker 2: of those that like, Oh, after last year, no, I
- 35:45Speaker 2: don't think we're going to cast him in this anymore.
- 35:47Speaker 8: Did you see him in that movie? So he is just, he's.
- 35:50Speaker 2: Utterly shameless in this movie. I mean, you, you see
- 35:53Speaker 2: him piss himself. You see him sitting on the toilet.
- 35:56Speaker 2: And what I feel is the most disgusting scene in
- 35:58Speaker 2: this movie, and that's saying a lot because this is
- 36:01Speaker 2: a disgusting movie, when he takes the turkey leg and
- 36:03Speaker 2: then throws it in the toilet that he couldn't flush. Oh,
- 36:07Speaker 2: my God. There's something just really horribly gross about that scene.
- 36:13Speaker 2: yeah there's something yeah that then once again that just
- 36:15Speaker 2: tells you that's pretty early on that tells you where
- 36:18Speaker 2: we're going.
- 36:18Speaker 10: With this character i don't like when that kid sneezes
- 36:20Speaker 10: chocolate ice cream on his face and he.
- 36:22Speaker 15: Doesn't wipe it off again that's i mean just shameless
- 36:26Speaker 15: like he just who else would sit there for like
- 36:29Speaker 15: that entire scene with this snot and chocolate ice cream
- 36:32Speaker 15: sprayed across his face.
- 36:34Speaker 2: It's so disgusting and he just sits there delivering lines
- 36:37Speaker 2: to kids as they climb up on.
- 36:38Speaker 9: It what do you want That's another thing I like
- 36:41Speaker 9: about this.
- 36:41Speaker 10: It's just like he's so despicable, yet he keeps getting hired,
- 36:46Speaker 10: and he's not fired.
- 36:48Speaker 9: This just is so unrealistic. Not necessarily.
- 36:53Speaker 2: I mean, if he really knew how to work the system,
- 36:55Speaker 2: and you see how schooled he is in that. He
- 36:58Speaker 2: seems kind of like an idiot so much of the time,
- 36:59Speaker 2: but you see when he gets in that situation where
- 37:01Speaker 2: they're going to get fired, how he knows how to
- 37:03Speaker 2: play the right cards.
- 37:04Speaker 10: I guess so, but it's just like aside from that
- 37:07Speaker 10: one angry parent, there'd be a slew of angry parents
- 37:10Speaker 10: like you just told my kid to fuck off or
- 37:12Speaker 10: you know.
- 37:13Speaker 2: The only thing I can think that would level it
- 37:15Speaker 2: out though is they talk about how cheap he's doing
- 37:17Speaker 2: it and these stores are so penny pinching especially at
- 37:20Speaker 2: Christmas but.
- 37:21Speaker 10: You have to pay some minimum wage no matter what
- 37:23Speaker 10: so you know I guess but I.
- 37:25Speaker 3: Mean I think if it's a contract you can probably
- 37:28Speaker 3: pay them you know if they say we will do
- 37:30Speaker 3: this service for this amount of time for this money.
- 37:33Speaker 2: Yeah you can sign something that says they can screw
- 37:35Speaker 2: you over really and what do they care because they're
- 37:37Speaker 2: going to steal everything so plus they've got the gimmick
- 37:40Speaker 2: of the little elf guys they're banking on that everywhere
- 37:43Speaker 2: they go so.
- 37:44Speaker 3: Plus if you're making minimum wage to play santa claus.
- 37:47Speaker 2: You're getting hosed yeah and think about how much that
- 37:49Speaker 2: other guy he'd been there what five years or something
- 37:52Speaker 2: he had to be making you know so much more
- 37:54Speaker 2: right doing it successfully year after year that when they
- 37:56Speaker 2: come in and underbid him massively and bring their you
- 37:59Speaker 2: know selling point which is the the elf Yeah, there's
- 38:03Speaker 2: a level I could see that, you know, the fact
- 38:05Speaker 2: that it gets away with, you know, sometimes you have
- 38:07Speaker 2: to skate by on some of the security issues because
- 38:10Speaker 2: it's pretty easy on some of these things they pull off.
- 38:12Speaker 3: I know a guy that plays Santa Claus every year,
- 38:15Speaker 3: and he is a disgusting human being. I wouldn't let
- 38:17Speaker 3: him in my house.
- 38:19Speaker 10: Whoa.
- 38:19Speaker 3: So, and he brings down big, big, his Santa suit
- 38:24Speaker 3: is like a $ 15, 000 Santa suit. He is the real
- 38:28Speaker 3: deal Santa Claus, and he's gross.
- 38:30Speaker 10: Yeah. My uncle played Santa a lot. He's a pretty,
- 38:36Speaker 10: I wouldn't say despicable human being, but he and my
- 38:41Speaker 10: mom's favorite thing to do, which is why she was
- 38:44Speaker 10: calling me earlier. They love to go to, like, food
- 38:46Speaker 10: banks and, like, take food from food banks.
- 38:49Speaker 3: Oh, shit.
- 38:50Speaker 9: Which, I mean, neither one of them have a job.
- 38:52Speaker 8: Are they making a movie about him?
- 38:54Speaker 10: I mean, I guess.
- 38:55Speaker 9: That's their job.
- 38:56Speaker 10: They don't have a job anymore, but, you know, it's
- 38:58Speaker 10: not because they can't. It's just because they're lazy, so...
- 39:02Speaker 10: You know.
- 39:02Speaker 3: I have no job, so I can't.
- 39:05Speaker 9: You don't like going to food banks just for fun.
- 39:08Speaker 10: You don't call all your friends, hey, I hit up
- 39:11Speaker 10: three food banks today. I got all these potatoes. Need
- 39:13Speaker 10: some potatoes? That's what my mom fucking said.
- 39:16Speaker 9: To me on the phone.
- 39:17Speaker 2: Wow.
- 39:18Speaker 9: I got a whole bunch of potatoes. You need some potatoes?
- 39:21Speaker 9: Need some bread?
- 39:21Speaker 2: Don't let Terry Zweigoff know about her. He will be fascinated.
- 39:24Speaker 9: I mean, she picked me up the other day.
- 39:26Speaker 10: Well, she drove up to my house and just honked
- 39:30Speaker 10: until I came outside. I was like, let's go to
- 39:32Speaker 10: the flea market. And, I mean, I couldn't say no
- 39:34Speaker 10: to that, honestly.
- 39:35Speaker 2: I couldn't say no.
- 39:36Speaker 10: I'm sorry. I'm sorry, but I just had to go.
- 39:39Speaker 10: And then she was like, hey, you ever need bread?
- 39:41Speaker 10: There's a food bank down the street. They give away bread.
- 39:43Speaker 10: And I'm like, I can buy my own fucking bread.
- 39:45Speaker 10: And she's like, why? Why not save yourself a dollar?
- 39:49Speaker 10: I was like, it's a fucking dollar. I can buy
- 39:50Speaker 10: my own goddamn bread. I have a job. I mean,
- 39:53Speaker 10: if I can afford a brand new car and a
- 39:56Speaker 10: brand new phone and my own place to live, I
- 39:58Speaker 10: can buy a fucking $ 1 loaf of bread.
- 40:00Speaker 2: See, that's the difference is you've got that line of decency.
- 40:03Speaker 16: Right.
- 40:04Speaker 2: And this entire movie is nothing but characters with no
- 40:08Speaker 2: decency whatsoever. There's never a moment in his day where
- 40:12Speaker 2: he's throwing a bottle at a car, just walking in
- 40:14Speaker 2: the mall. For no good reason other than that's the
- 40:18Speaker 2: way he is.
- 40:19Speaker 3: I think one of my favorite parts, the most... brash
- 40:23Speaker 3: thing he does is when he just he's behind the
- 40:25Speaker 3: bar at the beach just makes himself a drink and
- 40:29Speaker 3: then nonchalantly walks away after he's shoved out i mean
- 40:33Speaker 3: he doesn't run he doesn't care nobody's gonna hurt.
- 40:36Speaker 2: Him doesn't give a rat's ass about anybody or anything
- 40:39Speaker 2: i mean there's no situation and It is one of those,
- 40:41Speaker 2: that's that level where it's really dark when he sits
- 40:44Speaker 2: there and tells that lady, you think you can make
- 40:46Speaker 2: my life worse?
- 40:47Speaker 3: Right.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Fucking go ahead. And again, that's the part that I
- 40:51Speaker 2: think is real. That's the part that there are a
- 40:53Speaker 2: hell of a lot of people out there that are
- 40:54Speaker 2: living like that. And that's why they have no decency.
- 40:57Speaker 2: That's why they have no morals to worry about. Because
- 41:01Speaker 2: things are already so fucked up, at least in their mind, that,
- 41:04Speaker 2: you know, what are you going to do? How can
- 41:06Speaker 2: things get worse for me than the fucked up life
- 41:08Speaker 2: I have right now? So, yeah, it throws away all
- 41:13Speaker 2: the decency, all the morals are gone. Yeah.
- 41:16Speaker 10: Santa?
- 41:16Speaker 3: Is that your underwear?
- 41:19Speaker 11: Part of it.
- 41:20Speaker 6: Where the hell's the rest of it?
- 41:22Speaker 3: No, actually, don't tell me.
- 41:23Speaker 2: I don't want to know.
- 41:24Speaker 3: What do you want?
- 41:25Speaker 11: I was thinking I wanted a purple stuffed elephant, not pink.
- 41:28Speaker 11: But now I changed my mind. Yeah?
- 41:31Speaker 2: What?
- 41:31Speaker 11: Now I don't want an elephant at all. I want
- 41:33Speaker 11: a gorilla named Davey for beating up the skateboard kids
- 41:36Speaker 11: who pull on my underwear. and he could take his
- 41:38Speaker 11: orders from the talking walnut, so it wouldn't be my
- 41:41Speaker 11: bad thing.
- 41:43Speaker 2: Jesus, kid.
- 41:44Speaker 6: When I was your age, I didn't need no fucking gorilla,
- 41:46Speaker 6: and I wasn't as big as one of your legs.
- 41:48Speaker 6: Four kids beat me up one time, and I went
- 41:50Speaker 6: crying home to my daddy, and you know what he did?
- 41:51Speaker 11: He made it all better?
- 41:52Speaker 3: No, he kicked my ass. You know why?
- 41:55Speaker 11: Because you went to the bathroom on Mommy's dishes?
- 41:58Speaker 3: What the fuck?
- 42:00Speaker 10: No.
- 42:01Speaker 11: He tried to teach you not to cry and be
- 42:03Speaker 11: a man?
- 42:04Speaker 1: No.
- 42:05Speaker 6: It's because he was a mean, drunk son of a bitch.
- 42:08Speaker 6: And when he wasn't busy busting my ass, he was
- 42:10Speaker 6: putting cigarettes out on my neck. The world ain't fair.
- 42:13Speaker 6: You got to take what you need when you can
- 42:15Speaker 6: get it. You got to learn to stand up for yourself.
- 42:16Speaker 6: You're going to have to quit being a pussy and
- 42:18Speaker 6: kick these kids into balls or something.
- 42:21Speaker 3: Or don't. Shit, I don't care.
- 42:22Speaker 2: Just leave me the hell out of it.
- 42:24Speaker 3: Now get on out of here.
- 42:25Speaker 16: Okay.
- 42:26Speaker 11: Thanks, Santa.
- 42:27Speaker 2: I don't know. I mean, the relationship with him and
- 42:29Speaker 2: the kid does tie it together as much as... I mean,
- 42:32Speaker 2: he really is the only... You know, you've got a little...
- 42:35Speaker 2: Lauren Graham is a little wide-eyed, but again, we've introduced
- 42:38Speaker 2: that she's just part of the problem as well as
- 42:41Speaker 2: everybody else. I mean, if there's anybody that is the
- 42:44Speaker 2: innocence in this movie, is the only thing that's not
- 42:46Speaker 2: horrible and depraved, it's this little kid.
- 42:49Speaker 3: Yeah. It would be too dark if you didn't have
- 42:53Speaker 3: the innocence of the kid.
- 42:54Speaker 2: You would need something, I think.
- 42:58Speaker 3: Yeah, it would be too disturbing, I think.
- 43:01Speaker 11: I mean.
- 43:02Speaker 3: He's so innocent that, you know, what does he say
- 43:07Speaker 3: about the bad things are all said by the walnut
- 43:11Speaker 3: or something like that?
- 43:11Speaker 8: Yeah, the talking walnut.
- 43:13Speaker 3: That's some fucked up stuff.
- 43:15Speaker 8: Yeah, he's crazy.
- 43:15Speaker 3: That's a kid that's had a lot of issues.
- 43:17Speaker 2: And that's, again, a thing that I like because in
- 43:19Speaker 2: a lesser movie, in a movie you gave to another
- 43:22Speaker 2: director that was doing some cheesy, you know, Hollywood Christmas bullshit.
- 43:25Speaker 2: it would be this cutesy little Hollywood kid. But you
- 43:28Speaker 2: look at this kid. This is not the kind of
- 43:29Speaker 2: kid you cast in a movie, and certainly not a
- 43:32Speaker 2: big mainstream holiday movie. So the fact that he's got
- 43:36Speaker 2: that visual anyway, and then he plays it so creepy.
- 43:40Speaker 2: He's almost like a stalker in the beginning. He just
- 43:42Speaker 2: stands there, and then once he gets into his house,
- 43:45Speaker 2: he's standing over his bed while he's sleeping, just staring
- 43:47Speaker 2: at him.
- 43:48Speaker 3: And he's dollishly cute in the face. You know, cherub-like.
- 43:53Speaker 3: dollish face with his eyes and his hair like a
- 43:57Speaker 3: a cabbage patch kid or something, but he's creepy as shit.
- 44:00Speaker 2: Yeah, he's almost so misguided and so blind to everything
- 44:03Speaker 2: that you almost could see him doing something fucking crazy
- 44:06Speaker 2: because he just thought that's the way things go or that's,
- 44:08Speaker 2: you know, what the talking walnut fucking told him to do.
- 44:11Speaker 2: I know, for kids.
- 44:13Speaker 10: Yeah. I never even thought of it because the kid
- 44:15Speaker 10: just played it so well, it doesn't even strike you
- 44:17Speaker 10: as acting, but god.
- 44:18Speaker 9: Damn, that kid was fucking amazing.
- 44:20Speaker 2: He was.
- 44:20Speaker 10: I mean, I'm sure that kid's not really like that. Right.
- 44:24Speaker 9: You know, but I mean, damn, that kid.
- 44:26Speaker 2: Again, it's another one of those characters. I'm just like,
- 44:28Speaker 2: that kid is real. There is a messed up kid
- 44:30Speaker 2: out there that's just like him. And he lives and
- 44:33Speaker 2: breathes it in this movie. And it's weird and creepy.
- 44:37Speaker 2: And that's, again, there's like no normalcy in this movie.
- 44:40Speaker 2: And that's kind of why I like it. And that's
- 44:41Speaker 2: why I can't believe it even, I mean, even with
- 44:43Speaker 2: the guttural humor, I can't believe normal people are on
- 44:47Speaker 2: board for this movie. Because it's so fucked up. There's
- 44:49Speaker 2: no level of normalcy. There's no hero here. It should
- 44:53Speaker 2: cross the line into the darkness that most people won't
- 44:56Speaker 2: get on board for.
- 44:57Speaker 8: But, I mean, it's found a following.
- 44:59Speaker 10: People don't really think that far into movies, you know.
- 45:01Speaker 10: I mean, and that's the thing that's sad. It's found
- 45:06Speaker 10: its niche in people who love dark humor.
- 45:08Speaker 9: People such as ourselves.
- 45:10Speaker 10: People who really delve into the things behind movies and
- 45:13Speaker 10: the storyline and the plot and all that jazz. You know,
- 45:17Speaker 10: people who get stoned and sit around and watch Adam
- 45:19Speaker 10: Sandler movies.
- 45:21Speaker 2: And that's frightening to me that these are balanced out.
- 45:24Speaker 10: But it's just so.
- 45:26Speaker 9: It's funny. It's thoughtlessly funny.
- 45:28Speaker 10: It is.
- 45:29Speaker 2: I mean, there is a level where you can turn
- 45:30Speaker 2: your brain off and just laugh because he says fuck
- 45:32Speaker 2: a lot.
- 45:33Speaker 9: And when you think about it, it's really dark. But,
- 45:35Speaker 9: you know, it's just.
- 45:36Speaker 2: Fucking straight up funny. People don't like to think a
- 45:38Speaker 2: lot is what we're coming to.
- 45:40Speaker 3: There are people that laugh at South Park because... cartman
- 45:44Speaker 3: says shit yeah and there's people that laugh at south
- 45:48Speaker 3: park because they get the satire yeah there's two completely
- 45:52Speaker 3: different audiences at two level more than more than two
- 45:55Speaker 3: levels that's the same thing with this you could show
- 45:57Speaker 3: this to a you know college frat crowd and they
- 46:02Speaker 3: would laugh for different reasons than the college art house
- 46:05Speaker 3: crowd so exactly.
- 46:08Speaker 2: I don't know. Yeah, it's just that is what worked
- 46:11Speaker 2: so well for me is just how freaking impressively dark
- 46:14Speaker 2: it was.
- 46:14Speaker 10: And that's what I like about Terry Zweigoff. I mean,
- 46:17Speaker 10: you know, like Ghost World isn't for everybody.
- 46:19Speaker 2: Definitely not.
- 46:21Speaker 8: Nothing he's done is really.
- 46:22Speaker 3: I know.
- 46:23Speaker 10: And Art School Confidential isn't for everybody. But, you know,
- 46:25Speaker 10: like he knows people so well. He knows what makes
- 46:31Speaker 10: people tick. And I think if he wanted to, and
- 46:34Speaker 10: I respect him because he doesn't, He knows how to
- 46:37Speaker 10: cleverly disguise an intelligent, dark-humored movie that runs really deep
- 46:43Speaker 10: as just this funny movie that anyone can watch and
- 46:47Speaker 10: anyone can enjoy. That's what I like about him so
- 46:49Speaker 10: much as a director.
- 46:50Speaker 2: He's definitely got that level that just runs so much deeper.
- 46:53Speaker 2: And I guess, again, he's found his audience. And the
- 46:55Speaker 2: people that like his movies are going to see his
- 46:58Speaker 2: movies more than likely, regardless of what it is. But
- 47:01Speaker 2: this just seemed like such a... attempt at mainstream before
- 47:05Speaker 2: you really started watching it but I mean working in
- 47:07Speaker 2: the the funny Bernie Mac stuff and even John Ritter
- 47:10Speaker 2: who both of them are good John Ritter's amazing in
- 47:12Speaker 2: this right but I mean to me those are a
- 47:15Speaker 2: little more recognizable people trying to make it a little
- 47:17Speaker 2: more mainstream comedy so it I can see them trying
- 47:21Speaker 2: to do that but I just don't see it working
- 47:23Speaker 2: really with with I don't know I don't see how
- 47:25Speaker 2: he could do anything that's not dark and twist it's.
- 47:28Speaker 3: A shame about both Bernie Mac and uh Ritter.
- 47:31Speaker 2: Yeah rest in peace yeah And we were trying to
- 47:33Speaker 2: decide if John Ritter died during the filming because his
- 47:36Speaker 2: character does just disappear, really.
- 47:38Speaker 3: Yeah, he was set up for a bigger part and
- 47:40Speaker 3: then just, yeah, completely disappeared.
- 47:41Speaker 2: It just is gone. But, you know, what can you do?
- 47:44Speaker 2: It's good that we have at least this performance from him.
- 47:47Speaker 2: It was the last thing that he shot.
- 47:49Speaker 1: Yeah, well, you don't have to worry about me anymore.
- 47:53Speaker 3: I'm out.
- 47:54Speaker 10: I have to be going soon.
- 47:57Speaker 2: Do you want to wave goodbye to the people?
- 48:00Speaker 9: Bye, everybody. I have to go. That's all I have.
- 48:03Speaker 3: To say about the movie.
- 48:05Speaker 16: Merry Christmas.
- 48:05Speaker 9: Happy New Year.
- 48:07Speaker 2: Joyous Kwanzaa. Thanks for listening.
- 48:09Speaker 3: Happy Hanukkah.
- 48:10Speaker 2: Happy Kwanzaa.
- 48:10Speaker 10: Happy non-denominational festival holiday of the season.
- 48:15Speaker 8: Joyous Festivus.
- 48:16Speaker 3: Happy Festivus, yes. And up next will be the feats
- 48:20Speaker 3: of strength.
- 48:22Speaker 2: That's why she's running now. She knows there's going to
- 48:25Speaker 2: be a rashling.
- 48:26Speaker 3: First, the airing of grievances.
- 48:28Speaker 11: Oh, well.
- 48:28Speaker 2: I've got a big fucking list, let me tell you. Oh, man.
- 48:35Speaker 2: What else?
- 48:37Speaker 3: Yeah, the thing that probably sticks with me the most, honestly,
- 48:43Speaker 3: in this movie is the kid. Yeah. I just, he's
- 48:47Speaker 3: so fragile. And so to me, the one scene where
- 48:53Speaker 3: he reveals to Billy Bob Thornton's character that he's in
- 48:58Speaker 3: on it and that he gets it all, you know,
- 49:01Speaker 3: then you kind of like that big, oh, and when
- 49:04Speaker 3: he's talking about his mother and the donkeys and the.
- 49:08Speaker 3: the angels, or that his father's off climbing mountains. He understands.
- 49:15Speaker 2: He's dealing with it the only way he knows how.
- 49:17Speaker 2: I mean, he's been abandoned basically for three years.
- 49:19Speaker 4: Now.
- 49:20Speaker 8: So he was a.
- 49:20Speaker 2: Much younger kid when he had to start telling these
- 49:24Speaker 2: lies to himself. So at that point, he probably did
- 49:26Speaker 2: believe them. But years go by, and he gets older.
- 49:29Speaker 2: He starts to figure things out and be like, well,
- 49:32Speaker 2: this is how it works for me. This is how
- 49:34Speaker 2: I can deal with it. So he continues these little lies,
- 49:37Speaker 2: but it's like the Santa Claus thing. It's like he,
- 49:40Speaker 2: you know, a lot of kids play along for years,
- 49:42Speaker 2: even though they're like, well, I'm pretty sure it's not real,
- 49:45Speaker 2: but you know, whatever, like we said before, just go
- 49:47Speaker 2: along with it. Cause that's what you're expected to do.
- 49:49Speaker 2: And you know, in his world, that's what he's expected
- 49:52Speaker 2: to do. Grandma makes you sandwiches and you hang out
- 49:55Speaker 2: by yourself. And one day dad will come back from,
- 49:57Speaker 2: you know, exploring mountains.
- 49:58Speaker 11: Right.
- 49:59Speaker 3: And you know, every time there is a part where
- 50:04Speaker 3: someone is dealing with something that they can't handle it.
- 50:09Speaker 3: It's dealt with, well, can I make you some sandwiches?
- 50:11Speaker 3: It's like, well, I don't know what else to do,
- 50:13Speaker 3: so I'll make you some sandwiches.
- 50:15Speaker 8: That's the only thing that goes on in his world.
- 50:17Speaker 3: So it's an automatic response to, well, this is the solution.
- 50:22Speaker 3: I can fix it if I can just do this.
- 50:24Speaker 2: Which, again, is why I wonder if this is the case,
- 50:28Speaker 2: I will again give them credit for casting. Is that
- 50:30Speaker 2: why they cast a kid who's not a thin child?
- 50:33Speaker 11: Right.
- 50:33Speaker 2: That everything he does to... cope with his problems is
- 50:37Speaker 2: eat sandwiches right so i mean he's a pretty large
- 50:39Speaker 2: boy so again that i mean if you want to
- 50:42Speaker 2: look at it that deeply that's kind of genius on
- 50:44Speaker 2: their part that they've and.
- 50:46Speaker 3: Are those supposed to be the same clothes that he
- 50:48Speaker 3: was wearing three years ago when his dad went to jail.
- 50:51Speaker 2: Yeah you know maybe because you don't see grandma going
- 50:54Speaker 2: out to buy him anything new.
- 50:55Speaker 3: No grandma can't do anything she's senile so out of
- 50:57Speaker 3: it yeah so yeah it it The only thing that's
- 51:02Speaker 3: not realistic about that is the house is clean.
- 51:06Speaker 2: Yeah. But again, maybe it was part of his ritual
- 51:10Speaker 2: before Dad left, so maybe it's part of his day-to-day.
- 51:13Speaker 2: Maybe he's actually the one cleaning things up because Dad
- 51:16Speaker 2: wants it clean when he gets back or something like that.
- 51:18Speaker 3: If I keep it clean, things will be okay. Yeah,
- 51:21Speaker 3: I know. That's true.
- 51:22Speaker 2: Dealing with it, yeah.
- 51:23Speaker 3: That's true.
- 51:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it's... But I think, yeah, that relationship between the
- 51:28Speaker 2: two of them is as messed up as it is.
- 51:30Speaker 2: And the fact that he doesn't care. He curses around
- 51:33Speaker 2: him constantly. He calls him horrible names. But in the end,
- 51:37Speaker 2: once he starts to see how messed up the kid's
- 51:38Speaker 2: life is, he starts trying to help him. And you
- 51:41Speaker 2: go through that weird part in the middle where he's
- 51:43Speaker 2: trying to teach him to grow up and be a man.
- 51:45Speaker 2: And again, I think one of the more impressive things
- 51:49Speaker 2: about this is you start to see this dawning on him.
- 51:52Speaker 2: as a character that he also needs to grow up
- 51:55Speaker 2: and be a man.
- 51:55Speaker 11: Right.
- 51:56Speaker 2: He's been living this bullshit life for, you know, ever
- 51:59Speaker 2: his entire run. He's never really grown up and gotten
- 52:02Speaker 2: a real life and become a man and did what
- 52:04Speaker 2: you're supposed to do. And, and, Basically, what he's turning
- 52:08Speaker 2: into is his father. He talks about how horrible his
- 52:12Speaker 2: dad was and how he was a drunk and he
- 52:14Speaker 2: was a foul-mouthed guy who used to beat him. And
- 52:17Speaker 2: he's one step away from that here. He never hits
- 52:19Speaker 2: the kid. He never comes close to hitting the kid.
- 52:22Speaker 2: He throws his tantrums and he throws things around and
- 52:24Speaker 2: he breaks shit constantly. So, I mean, he's one step
- 52:27Speaker 2: away from that point. I mean, he's... He's just not
- 52:29Speaker 2: been exposed to kids enough, I guess, that maybe it
- 52:32Speaker 2: never went down that way. But you get the feeling
- 52:34Speaker 2: he would have no problem with an adult. So maybe that, again,
- 52:37Speaker 2: is the last shred of dignity.
- 52:38Speaker 3: And he did beat up a kid.
- 52:39Speaker 2: Yeah, well, he had no problem beating.
- 52:41Speaker 8: The hell out of that skateboard punk, which was awesome,
- 52:43Speaker 8: by the way.
- 52:44Speaker 11: Right.
- 52:45Speaker 8: But, yes, I don't know.
- 52:46Speaker 2: I think there is that level of, you know, that,
- 52:49Speaker 2: I don't know. I really like that part where he
- 52:51Speaker 2: actually starts to realize. Again, it's one of those moments
- 52:54Speaker 2: of redemption.
- 52:55Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 52:55Speaker 2: It never pans out. I mean, he never really fully
- 52:57Speaker 2: comes around. And I think in a more generic, heartwarming movie,
- 53:02Speaker 2: the kid would totally redeem our main character. And, you know,
- 53:05Speaker 2: it would be a big, cheesy, happy ending like most
- 53:08Speaker 2: holiday movies. But in this movie, it's like he slowly
- 53:11Speaker 2: begins to wear away the innocence from the kid, really.
- 53:14Speaker 2: It's like it almost works in reverse. He sort of
- 53:16Speaker 2: has these moments where he redeems Billy Bob Thornton. But
- 53:19Speaker 2: in a way, in the end, Billy Bob's done way
- 53:22Speaker 2: more to the kid... from his lifestyle, then, you know,
- 53:25Speaker 2: Billy Bob's kind of the same guy in the end. Right.
- 53:27Speaker 2: The kid's very different now.
- 53:29Speaker 3: Right.
- 53:30Speaker 2: So, I mean, I don't know. In a way, it's...
- 53:32Speaker 2: weird and once again shows sort of an even darker
- 53:34Speaker 2: and more depraved ending that there is no redemption for
- 53:37Speaker 2: billy bob thornton but he's now warped the mind of
- 53:39Speaker 2: this innocent.
- 53:40Speaker 3: Child right right well you know and and in a
- 53:43Speaker 3: way some of it's good film noir too there is
- 53:45Speaker 3: a lot of times there is no redemption no so
- 53:48Speaker 3: uh definitely i i wouldn't want them to sell out
- 53:51Speaker 3: and it to be you know leave it to beaver
- 53:53Speaker 3: or something like that that would that would make it
- 53:55Speaker 3: horrible That would be a Jack Nicholson movie.
- 53:58Speaker 11: It would.
- 53:58Speaker 3: That would be terrible.
- 54:01Speaker 2: And you can't have moments like... To me, the turning
- 54:03Speaker 2: point is the pickle. I mean, that is fucking heartbreaking
- 54:07Speaker 2: when he walks in and tells that story. And it's
- 54:10Speaker 2: like the only thing that comes close is the elephant
- 54:12Speaker 2: at the end. And it's like those are the few
- 54:14Speaker 2: moments of decency in Billy Bob Thornton's character. But everything else,
- 54:19Speaker 2: it's like that's really the only time you see this
- 54:21Speaker 2: moment of good come out in him. Even when he's
- 54:23Speaker 2: trying to... Because you get to that point at the end,
- 54:25Speaker 2: he's almost... plain house it's like he's got laurie graham
- 54:28Speaker 2: there's the mom they're you know get their trim of
- 54:30Speaker 2: the tree they've got the kid there grandma's in the
- 54:32Speaker 2: other room you know he really is trying to have
- 54:35Speaker 2: this little dream life that he mentions at the beginning
- 54:38Speaker 2: but even then he doesn't see like he's still cursing
- 54:40Speaker 2: at him while he's doing it he's still the same
- 54:42Speaker 2: guy like he never really comes around and you know
- 54:45Speaker 2: has this redemption and you know totally changes over and
- 54:48Speaker 2: is this big sappy heartwarming no no he goes right
- 54:51Speaker 2: back to kind of being a terrible person again pretty
- 54:54Speaker 2: pretty quickly and Again, this is one of those that,
- 54:58Speaker 2: and why I've, I just sort of picked it and
- 55:01Speaker 2: I didn't remember how dark it was until I went
- 55:03Speaker 2: back and watched it this week.
- 55:04Speaker 8: And I think that, again, is what I latched onto.
- 55:07Speaker 8: I think it's, it exists.
- 55:09Speaker 2: And I think more what I sort of gave it
- 55:12Speaker 2: respect for is that it exists in a real world.
- 55:15Speaker 2: It's like a world where everybody's problems don't just disappear
- 55:19Speaker 2: because it's December and there's holiday music on the radio.
- 55:22Speaker 2: It exists in a real world where suicides go up
- 55:24Speaker 2: at Christmas. It exists in that world where these people
- 55:28Speaker 2: are all horrible people. They're all dealing with horrible problems.
- 55:32Speaker 2: Messed up mindset that sometimes isn't even their own fault.
- 55:36Speaker 2: They grew up that way and they don't even understand
- 55:38Speaker 2: how messed up they are. And there's no way for
- 55:41Speaker 2: them to get out of it. They're just like, my
- 55:42Speaker 2: life is fucked. How much worse could it get? So
- 55:44Speaker 2: it It's so dark. Again, I just give it credit
- 55:49Speaker 2: for not pulling punches, for just really going down that
- 55:51Speaker 2: road and sticking to it.
- 55:53Speaker 3: One thing that I always try to pay attention to
- 55:56Speaker 3: the geography of a film. One thing I like about
- 56:02Speaker 3: it is it's set in Arizona, southwest.
- 56:05Speaker 2: Warm Christmases always seem so.
- 56:12Speaker 3: It's strange. It's really fucking cold right now. and and
- 56:31Speaker 3: plastic for them to have what you know and and
- 56:35Speaker 3: and i think that fits better in with this movie
- 56:37Speaker 3: i think if it would have been set in minneapolis
- 56:39Speaker 3: it wouldn't you know it could have had a darker
- 56:41Speaker 3: feel because it's set in minneapolis.
- 56:43Speaker 2: Yeah but but it wouldn't feel so fake it would feel.
- 56:46Speaker 3: So fake and forced and so that that to me
- 56:49Speaker 3: is another a little point i was like because i
- 56:52Speaker 3: i kept thinking i A lot of times I think, okay,
- 56:56Speaker 3: why did they pick Arizona? Okay, maybe it's cheaper to
- 56:59Speaker 3: shoot there. They wanted to be warm in their shooting. Whatever.
- 57:02Speaker 8: Sometimes that's all it is.
- 57:04Speaker 3: Sometimes that's all it is, but they could have picked Vancouver,
- 57:06Speaker 3: and it could have been Christmassy or something like that,
- 57:09Speaker 3: but no. They picked Arizona because Christmas looks so much
- 57:14Speaker 3: more fake someplace like that.
- 57:16Speaker 2: And again, I think it's that visual. It's much like
- 57:19Speaker 2: him being super skinny in the giant suit. It's like
- 57:22Speaker 2: these people dressed in winter gear and that shot of
- 57:25Speaker 2: them walking down the street, that first shot when they
- 57:27Speaker 2: cut to Arizona is fucking priceless.
- 57:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 57:30Speaker 2: And that, you know, that's worth the movie right there.
- 57:32Speaker 2: Just that shot of the two of them walking up
- 57:33Speaker 2: with like those heat waves coming off the fucking road.
- 57:37Speaker 2: It's so damn hot. And they're there and they're Santa
- 57:39Speaker 2: and elf gear. And that shot is just awesome.
- 57:41Speaker 3: And he tosses the bottle at the Mercedes.
- 57:43Speaker 2: At the Mercedes. Oh, man. So I think the only
- 57:49Speaker 2: other thing I was going to touch on is that, again,
- 57:51Speaker 2: I said I was watching the It's a Wonderful Life
- 57:54Speaker 2: this week. And that's another one that's a very dark
- 57:57Speaker 2: version of sort of a Christmas tale. Yeah. And in
- 58:00Speaker 2: a way, it was just like, I actually ran across
- 58:03Speaker 2: somebody that did a review on Bad Santa and kind
- 58:06Speaker 2: of made a comparison. It actually was a decent review,
- 58:08Speaker 2: but they compared... One to the other, and at the
- 58:11Speaker 2: end they were like, except George Bailey never kicked Mr.
- 58:13Speaker 2: Potter in the nuts. And I was like, again, that's
- 58:17Speaker 2: the difference. This isn't a real world. Because in the
- 58:20Speaker 2: real world, somebody needs to beat the hell out of Mr. Potter.
- 58:22Speaker 2: He's a conniving, backstabbing, greedy motherfucker, and somebody needs to
- 58:27Speaker 2: beat the hell out of him. But that can't happen
- 58:29Speaker 2: in a Frank Capra world. And Frank Capra would never
- 58:32Speaker 2: allow one of his main characters. They are heroes, so
- 58:36Speaker 2: no hero... especially in that frank capper world could ever
- 58:40Speaker 2: cross that line there is a level of decency and
- 58:42Speaker 2: you even see you've got you know george bailey almost
- 58:45Speaker 2: gets bought out by him he offers him the money
- 58:47Speaker 2: and he's like hey come work at us you get
- 58:49Speaker 2: the biggest house in town and you get all i
- 58:51Speaker 2: mean he he really tries to play that he tries
- 58:53Speaker 2: to tempt him and you watch him say no screw
- 58:56Speaker 2: you i'm not going to be that you know everybody
- 58:58Speaker 2: else is falling into line and i'm not going to
- 59:00Speaker 2: be that guy And that was just kind of the
- 59:02Speaker 2: main difference. It's like you look at something like a
- 59:04Speaker 2: Frank capper movie and that's what it is there is
- 59:07Speaker 2: that there is that good level to everybody there you
- 59:10Speaker 2: know with the exception of the villain mr potter but
- 59:13Speaker 2: this is like the polar opposite it's like we have
- 59:16Speaker 2: it exists in that real world where people are depressed
- 59:19Speaker 2: at the holidays and you know people are fucking horrible
- 59:22Speaker 2: to each other so it's i don't know i think
- 59:24Speaker 2: it is one of those things that's kind of an
- 59:26Speaker 2: interesting comparison to look at you know this this seemingly
- 59:29Speaker 2: perfect world and then this real world version that that
- 59:32Speaker 2: bat santa.
- 59:33Speaker 3: Exists in those people are out there.
- 59:35Speaker 2: A lot of them right i might be turning it
- 59:42Speaker 2: oh lord so hmm so yeah 170 uses of fuck
- 59:46Speaker 2: 74 uses of shit 31 uses of ass 10 uses
- 59:48Speaker 2: of bitch and one use of bastards.
- 59:54Speaker 3: Wow, you'd think there'd be more bastards in it.
- 59:56Speaker 2: No, no, there's a lot of bastards in the story,
- 59:58Speaker 2: but not so much in the dialogue.
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: A lot of fuck. I mean, it's just about every line.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. Just about every line. And again, in a
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: lesser movie, I think it would come off ridiculous and
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: over the top, but these guys are so horrible that
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: I actually buy what they're saying.
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: Yeah, they don't sound like they're speaking any different than
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: they normally would in their world. They're that bad of people.
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: They are, yeah, these horrible people. Yeah, both of them.
- 1:00:27Speaker 8: It's like, you know, the.
- 1:00:30Speaker 8: The elf is equally as horrible as Santa. Oh, probably more.
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: By the end of it is more.
- 1:00:34Speaker 8: You see, by the end of it, you realize.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: that Billy Bob Thornton is sort of trying to redeem himself,
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: but his partner doesn't care. He has no remorse. He
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: has no redemption. He plans on killing people and moving
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: on to the next hit next year.
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: Well, like he says when they're at the standoff there
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: in the mall, he says, look at you people. He's
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: judging them. He is a horrible, horrible person. And he says,
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: look at you people.
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: He's still looking down.
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: You don't need this stuff. How dare you?
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: Which is a minor jab at the whole commercialism thing.
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: But it's the only thing.
- 1:01:17Speaker 8: It's kind of weird.
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: Because other than that, he doesn't seem like he cares
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: the rest of the time. He could care less about
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: anything for the rest of the movie. But he all
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: of a sudden has this weird turn. Again, that's another
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: line that I don't know where it came from. I
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: don't know if it was like, Add it in later,
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: because it seems almost out of place, too. But again,
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: it is interesting to see him looking at them and
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: judging them of, you know, look how much worse you
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: are than me. And that's saying something, because I'm a
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: horrible human being.
- 1:01:43Speaker 10: So, yeah.
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: I just want to know how he spent $ 100, 000 in
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: this couple of months. Other than, you know, you can't
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: do that in alcohol.
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: Lottery tickets.
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: Lottery tickets.
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: Losing lottery tickets.
- 1:01:54Speaker 8: I like that.
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: He stole like thousands of dollars.
- 1:01:56Speaker 8: And what does he do?
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: He goes and buys scratch-offs.
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: And won't give the stripper a dollar. He'll give her
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: a scratch-off.
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: He'll give her $ 5 in scratch-offs.
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: That's a pretty good tip.
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: That's pretty good, yeah.
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: And she came home with it.
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: Yeah. Once again, I don't understand any of this.
- 1:02:12Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:02:12Speaker 14: Although.
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: Even the big girls. I don't know what the big
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: girls were thinking either.
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: That's just funny.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: For the subtle joke, the most fucking awesome subtle joke
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: in the thing is that the sign, and I'm assuming it's, again,
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: I don't think it's the department, but again, working in retail,
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: I think it's their sale for the moment where you
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: have to change out the signs every time it's time
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: for a new quote-unquote sale, even though everything's fucking the
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: same every time. But, yeah, the signage says, three times
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: the lady. I was like, now, they never mention that.
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: You don't even see it very well. It's off, like,
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: they walk past the sign when he's going to the
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: room where they're doing things.
- 1:02:51Speaker 8: So, yeah.
- 1:02:53Speaker 7: Oh, man.
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: That was, again, anybody that can work in, like, subtle
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: humor like that and not shove it down your throat
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: and just be like, you know what?
- 1:03:00Speaker 8: This is funny because I think it's funny. If anybody
- 1:03:02Speaker 8: else catches it, that's awesome.
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: But... I'm not going to make it, you know, again,
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: a lesser director, a lesser movie would have done that.
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: It would have been the whole joke of that scene.
- 1:03:12Speaker 14: Right.
- 1:03:12Speaker 8: But, nope, it's barely even noticeable.
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: Or they'd stop, the camera would stop on it and go, hey, nudge, nudge.
- 1:03:17Speaker 11: Nudge, nudge.
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: Just start there and pan on over to the characters
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: and be like, oh, get it?
- 1:03:22Speaker 8: Look at the sign.
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: Yeah. So, again, just touches that Terry Zweigoff does that's
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: so much better than, you know, most other directors. So, I.
- 1:03:31Speaker 8: I really kind of wish he would do more stuff.
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: But again, I guess I don't want him to start
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: doing things that don't fit what he does. I think
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: he kind of knows his movie. And maybe he waits
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: until he finds something that fits what he does.
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: Or somebody that will.
- 1:03:46Speaker 3: Put the money up to do what he wants to do.
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: I think that's the more important thing.
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: Probably, because to me, his best movie is his first.
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: And that's because he had freedom to do whatever, because
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: it's a documentary and nobody really cares about documentaries and
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: he didn't need much money to make it. He just
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: needed a camera and he followed Trump around. To me,
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: it's the best documentary I've ever seen. I like a
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: lot of other stuff, but the way that it's shot
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: is so impressive that Again, I just want to see
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: him do more stuff. Yeah, he's a hell of a director.
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: Anything else on Bad Santa?
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: We pretty much talked about it as much as we can.
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: I think we've covered every scene.
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: Dissected it quite a bit.
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:04:31Speaker 8: Well, we will take a break and be back with
- 1:04:33Speaker 8: the end of the show.
- 1:04:34Speaker 14: Oh, Sina.
- 1:04:36Speaker 11: Oh, Mary. Keep it going.
- 1:04:38Speaker 9: Jesus Christ.
- 1:04:39Speaker 10: Yeah, baby.
- 1:04:40Speaker 11: Yeah, baby.
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: You ain't got to shit right for a week.
- 1:04:53Speaker 12: They call me back though Santa I make.
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: My runs about to break a day.
- 1:04:58Speaker 12: I make all the little girls happy While the boys
- 1:05:03Speaker 12: are out to play.
- 1:05:21Speaker 16: Friends.
- 1:05:49Speaker 14: Here's a wonderful Christmas gift for anyone who smokes, because
- 1:05:52Speaker 14: it says Merry Christmas and Happy Smoking 200 times. Yes,
- 1:05:58Speaker 14: 10 packs of those better-tasting Luckys, all done up for
- 1:06:02Speaker 14: Christmas in a beautiful carton created just for Lucky Strike
- 1:06:05Speaker 14: by the famous designer, Mr.
- 1:06:07Speaker 10: Raymond Lowy.
- 1:06:08Speaker 14: It'll look so bright and colorful under your Christmas tree,
- 1:06:11Speaker 14: and it's such a welcome gift to anyone who enjoys
- 1:06:14Speaker 14: a good smoke. Because, you know, smoking enjoyment is all
- 1:06:18Speaker 14: a matter of taste. And the fact of the matter is,
- 1:06:21Speaker 14: Luckys taste better. Cleaner, fresher, smoother. That's why you can't
- 1:06:27Speaker 14: go wrong if you remember your friends with these colorful
- 1:06:31Speaker 14: Christmas cartons of Lucky Strike.
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: Be happy, go lucky for Christmas gifts this year.
- 1:06:40Speaker 11: Black Christmas.
- 1:06:46Speaker 14: There was a little girl murdered over in the park tonight.
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: Yes, I heard.
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: A high school girl's been murdered.
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: Mr.
- 1:06:52Speaker 3: Harrison's daughter is missing. And now at the house where
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: she lives, the other girls are getting obscene phone calls.
- 1:06:59Speaker 12: Hello?
- 1:06:59Speaker 11: What do you want?
- 1:07:03Speaker 7: Remember those idyllic scenes out of your childhood?
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: Crisp winter nights, sleigh bells, crackling ear logs?
- 1:07:09Speaker 11: Remember those? Remember them well.
- 1:07:12Speaker 12: After Black Christmas, they'll never be the same again. Black Christmas.
- 1:07:17Speaker 12: Starring Olivia Hussey, Kid Ulay, Margot Kidder, and starring John
- 1:07:22Speaker 12: Saxon as Lieutenant Fuller.
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: If this movie doesn't make your skin crawl, it's on
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: too tight.
- 1:07:30Speaker 7: Are you looking for a way to connect with people
- 1:07:31Speaker 7: who like the things that you like? Whether it's music, movies, TV,
- 1:07:35Speaker 7: or whatever you're into, head on over to the Palover.com forums. Yes,
- 1:07:40Speaker 7: but forums and message boards are elitist and archaic. Well, yeah,
- 1:07:47Speaker 7: maybe if you're an asshole. Palover.com is home to all
- 1:07:50Speaker 7: your favorite podcasts. So why not head over there now?
- 1:07:53Speaker 7: Start talking about all the things you want to talk about.
- 1:07:56Speaker 7: That's palaver.com. P-A-L-A-V-E-R dot com.
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: Woo-woo!
- 1:08:02Speaker 5: It's part of your problem, you know.
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: You haven't seen enough movies.
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: All of life's riddles are answered in the movies.
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: And now, on with the show.
- 1:08:19Speaker 12: And it wouldn't be Christmas without you Can't fool me,
- 1:08:23Speaker 12: I know.
- 1:08:23Speaker 5: It's true Merry Christmas, merry la la la And.
- 1:08:28Speaker 12: It wouldn't be Christmas without you Can't fool me, I
- 1:08:32Speaker 12: know it's true Merry Christmas, merry la.
- 1:08:37Speaker 14: La la Look at my.
- 1:08:49Speaker 5: All right, we are back and we've got.
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: Feedback.
- 1:09:00Speaker 11: Yay. Yay.
- 1:09:02Speaker 4: We're going to have the hap-hap-happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: tap dance with Danny fucking K.
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: Now, granted, as much as we've been off for quite
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: a while and I hadn't checked the voicemails in a
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: while because I was waiting until we got back here
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: around the table to go through them all, yeah, nothing, guys.
- 1:09:17Speaker 8: What the hell's up with that?
- 1:09:18Speaker 14: So, I mean.
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: I was all excited.
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: Well, I mean, we do have feedback, but just, you know, again,
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: I can't afford heat, but I'm keeping this voicemail line
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: open so that you guys can get in. Yeah, we've
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: gone for like a month now and nothing, so I...
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: It's really sad is what it is.
- 1:09:31Speaker 3: You know what I'm going to get you next Christmas?
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: A big wooden cross. So every time you feel unappreciated
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: for all your sacrifices, you can climb on up and
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: nail yourself to it. Just call and leave dirty messages.
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: That too is pretty awesome, actually. So, but yeah, we
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: did get feedback and we heard from Marty. And Marty says,
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: Hey guys, don't remember when I started listening, but your
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: podcast is awesome. Just listen to your Thanksgiving show. Living
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: in Australia, we don't celebrate Thanksgiving. However, Thanksgiving sounds hilarious.
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: We'll definitely check it out. Keep doing the show as is.
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: I think a lot of us are tired of everything
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: having to be completely non-offensive, PC, and homogenized.
- 1:10:08Speaker 8: Have fun, dudes.
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: Marty from Australia.
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: Great, Marty. Thank you.
- 1:10:12Speaker 8: Once again, yeah, that's awesome to hear.
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: And that's kind of why I'm picking a movie this
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: ridiculous and over the top and far from PC. Because
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: I think that kind of stuff doesn't have to turn
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: people off. I think there's something there that maybe it's
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: not PC to say some of the horrible things they say.
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: But if you delve into it, I think there's something
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: smarter there. And I think there's something more to find.
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: And hopefully that's true with what we do. Granted, we
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: say a lot of horrible things as well. We're one
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: shade away from Billy Bob Thornton. But I'd like to
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: think there's something redeeming about us. I would like to
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: think we appreciate the bloody pickle. Not everybody can say that.
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: No, no. I think when you analyze the dark, when
- 1:10:52Speaker 3: you really... put a light on the dark and talk
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: about it instead of just forget about it or maybe
- 1:11:00Speaker 3: just focus on the humor um you really learn a
- 1:11:05Speaker 3: lot more.
- 1:11:05Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: And I think a lot of show, you know, that's,
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: that's why people come to a show like this, that
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: they look for podcasts because people are number one, willing
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: to say what they think, which you don't get to
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: do in normal media. It's like, where else can you
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: just say horrible things like we do, but at the
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: same time also take a movie like this and dissect
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: it and go into all the obscenity and go into
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: all the horrible, you know, characters.
- 1:11:29Speaker 11: Right.
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: Or something as ridiculous as Thanksgiving. And yet we took
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: a pretty detailed look at that damn movie and found
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: the good in it. And don't get me wrong, there's
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: a lot of stupid things in it, but we found
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: some redeeming qualities in that too. And I think that's
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: what I think we're trying to do more than anything,
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: or at least I am, is try to find that
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: other level where people, especially in traditional media, all they
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: want to do is talk up what's coming out and
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: just talk about... whatever the the good two-minute discussion on
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: what's going to sell the movie is and move on
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: and it's like i don't want to do that i
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: want to delve into it i want to find its
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: flaws i want to find you know what it does
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: that people overlook i think there's a lot more going
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: on in a way you have to be kind of
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: non-pc to do that i mean you can't right do
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: that without you know probably rubbing people the wrong way
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: because not everybody wants to hear that kind of stuff
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: but you know Again, we've got, you know, Marty says
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: keep on doing it. And we keep hearing from people
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: saying to keep that up. So that's what I'm taking
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: from it.
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: Thank you, Marty.
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: Stick with it.
- 1:12:33Speaker 10: So, yes.
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: That's how I feel as well.
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: Thank you, Marty, for our bloody pickle.
- 1:12:38Speaker 3: If somebody wants to send Movie Meltdown a bloody pickle.
- 1:12:41Speaker 8: Keep it in a plastic bag, though.
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: We'll send you autographed photos.
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: That nobody would want. Nobody would want it.
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: Unless you want to use it to sign up for
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: a credit card or something. Make my credit bad.
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: I'm already there, so you can't get anything from me.
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: As I mentioned before, I don't have a job right now.
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: You're not going to get much out of me. We're
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: ghetto poor. That's why we're eating Little Debbie's for Christmas.
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: Whatever you want.
- 1:13:11Speaker 11: Oh.
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: Hey, and if you want to send us some money
- 1:13:14Speaker 3: and we'll do weird things on the show, by all means,
- 1:13:17Speaker 3: we'll sell out.
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: Yeah, that's not even sell out. We're just, at this point,
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: desperate enough that we do need donations. Because I realized
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: last week, and you can tell on the Thanksgiving episode,
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: at least one, and now I've found out two of
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: the mics sound like shit. And they're going out, and
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: I don't even have money to get new mics. So
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: I'm not sure what we're going to do.
- 1:13:36Speaker 10: So.
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: Yeah, plus my computer went down week before last, which
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: delayed an episode quite a bit, and I had to
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: go in debt to get that fixed so that I
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: could put out the next episode in this episode.
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: And we barely have heat.
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: And we don't, yeah, we're one step from a barrel
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: of fire, you know, hobo action here. So, yeah, I'm
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: just saying, I hear a lot of other shows that actually...
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: weekly thank people for their donations and i'm like you
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: know that that's what's hard is i don't think i
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: would care normally i don't expect anything from anybody but
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: when i hear other shows that are doing basically the
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: same thing as we are that yeah they're just people
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: are like throwing money at them that's just that's hard
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: to deal with.
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: Yeah we'll kiss our moms for five bucks.
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: That's you that's.
- 1:14:19Speaker 16: What christmas is all about charlie brown okay kids get
- 1:14:22Speaker 16: out your dakota bins dun dun dun there we go
- 1:14:26Speaker 16: we need like a holiday jingle to go along with
- 1:14:29Speaker 16: it sorry.
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: For you members of the secret circle it's time for
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: the movie lockdown secret circle reveal of some upcoming features
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: again the scheduling uh being the holidays of every variety
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: this you know end of this month We've got, as
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: I stated earlier in the episode, somebody that's working nonstop
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: and is not even available between now and then. Um,
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: everyone else is probably going to have weird family stuff.
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: So I'm not even a hundred percent sure when to
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: pin down the next one, but you know, it is
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: definitely coming. Uh, I've got several in the works, but
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: I will throw some out there for you to, uh,
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: to look for and watch the movies if you're up
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: for it. Uh, We mentioned last time out we were
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: considering Survive Style 5. So I'm still waiting for, you know,
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: Marlene is supposed to be hooking up with that movie.
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: Supposedly she has it or access to it.
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: She's hooking up with the movie?
- 1:15:17Speaker 8: From a transvestite or something.
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: I have no idea where she's going to get it,
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: and I don't want to ask any questions at this point.
- 1:15:22Speaker 3: Her transgender doppelganger?
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: Maybe he's paying her off in movies now.
- 1:15:26Speaker 12: I don't know.
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: Let me look like you if I give you free movies.
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: Who knows? I'm also working on, and this shouldn't be
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: a surprise because I just talked to Chainsaw, but yeah,
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: I'm working on a summer school special episode, maybe even
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: a crossover with one of our Pal-O-Ver co-shows.
- 1:15:45Speaker 14: Oh, cool.
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: Sister shows are... No, we're not sisters. We're the bastard
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: children of the family. We're cousins.
- 1:15:50Speaker 3: We're the redheaded stepchild.
- 1:15:52Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:15:52Speaker 8: Ironically, we are.
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: So, yeah, we are the bastard child of Pavler, I suppose.
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: But they're still cool. So, I won't go into it yet.
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: I'm still squaring away the details, but... Yep, summer school.
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: That's going to be awesome. And we got a lot
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: of really good response to the Joe Bob Briggs episode.
- 1:16:10Speaker 3: Well, yeah, absolutely.
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: Yeah, people really liked it. I'm going to throw it
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: out there online. I've actually got an interview I did
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: with him before. That one was all about the movie.
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: I've got one that I did with him that talks
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: about him coming up and being interested in movies and
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: him getting into... writing about it and journalism back when
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: nobody was doing this kind of thing. And I think
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: it's a really interesting interview. And since people kind of
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: responded so well to Joe Bob, if I'm trying to,
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: in addition to everything else, get people to spread the
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: word about the show. So I'm actually, you know, this,
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: this week I'm noting the, the level that we're at
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: on downloads. And if you guys can, can pass the word,
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: anybody else, you know, that likes Joe Bob Briggs, it
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: likes Texas chainsaw massacre that, you know, that you think
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: would appreciate our sick sense of humor.
- 1:16:55Speaker 8: Um, pass the word on the show.
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: And, uh, if we can, if we can just bump
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: it up like a hundred downloads before the end of
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: the year, I will start piecing together this, this sequel
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: that has the, the Joe Bob interview. And we'll try
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: to find a fitting movie to watch. That's a Joe
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: Bob related somewhat. So yeah, if, if you guys, yeah, if,
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: if Joe Bob fans are out there or even if
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: you don't like Joe Bob, just, we really, I've been
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: trying to come up with a good way to, to
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: pass the word along. I mean, we're heading into the
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: third year here and I still feel like We're hitting
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: the same people every time. So I'd really like to
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: get it out there and find more people who would
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: be interested. So if you know anybody, if you think
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: they would like that episode or any of them, just
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: spread the word and get back with us and let
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: us know you did it. Because we would definitely appreciate
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: it and we'd be glad to hear what you're doing
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: to help get it out there.
- 1:17:40Speaker 3: Or if you are on Facebook. And friends of us
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: on Facebook, just link to one of the episodes that
- 1:17:49Speaker 3: you find funny, and maybe one of your sick friends
- 1:17:51Speaker 3: will like it too.
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: Or Twitter. We've had a few people that retweet when
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: I put the post up for the next one. That's awesome.
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: There's a couple that do it almost every time, and
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: I appreciate that immensely. anybody else that follows us on
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: Twitter or if not go follow us on Twitter. But yeah,
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: anytime I put that up, feel free to, to pass
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: along to all your friends. Cause I'm, yeah, I'm just
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: really trying to find more people that appreciate the movies
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: that we do and the level of geeking out over
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: movies that we do.
- 1:18:17Speaker 3: This is, this is free. So we can use some
- 1:18:20Speaker 3: free gorilla marketing. Definitely.
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: We are the, the DIY, uh, show about movies. So we're,
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: we're definitely up for some, some gorilla spreading of the word. So,
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: All right, I think that is about it this week
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: to wrap up the Fuck Me Santa holiday special.
- 1:18:37Speaker 11: Yes. Yes.
- 1:18:39Speaker 3: I could put that on loop and put on a
- 1:18:41Speaker 3: Santa Claus hat and listen to her say that over
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: and over.
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: Yes, yes.
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: I might do that later anyway might keep you warm anyway.
- 1:18:50Speaker 3: And uh we love you lauren based on uh as
- 1:18:53Speaker 3: i mentioned earlier go see max and mary or excuse
- 1:18:56Speaker 3: me rent it or buy it it's it's uh that
- 1:18:59Speaker 3: good definitely all right i i figure plugging uh uh
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: uh an artist, you know, claymation is an art form
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: to me. Push animation as much as possible. Go buy it.
- 1:19:13Speaker 3: It's that good.
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't mind spreading the word on movies, especially
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: stuff that we like, and it's kind of what we're
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: here for. So definitely anything we can pass along that
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: people might take a liking to, that's what we need
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: to do. So as far as music, I thought we'd
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: end this holiday episode with a song that has a
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: bad attitude about Christmas, like our movie this week. So
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: we'll go out with a song entitled Don't Steal or
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: Kill This Christmas. Which, of course, both things happen in.
- 1:19:39Speaker 8: This week's movie. Otherwise, that about does it.
- 1:19:43Speaker 3: Merry Christmas.
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: We will return next week. Same geek time, same geek feed.
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: Thanks for listening.
- 1:19:48Speaker 3: I'm going to bed.
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: Me too.
- 1:20:03Speaker 12: Don't listen to what your parents say December 25th is
- 1:20:08Speaker 12: just another day Santa Claus doesn't really exist It's.
- 1:20:12Speaker 7: All a bunch of holiday.

- 1:20:27Speaker 3: Crummy gifts.

- 1:20:48Speaker 12: bitch I'm getting poor and Hallmark's getting rich Don't bother
- 1:20:53Speaker 12: celebrating Christmas.

- 1:21:04Speaker 12: gifts There's no such thing as flying reindeer or those
- 1:21:20Speaker 12: stupid little elves.
- 1:21:22Speaker 3: There's no house sitting on.
- 1:21:24Speaker 14: The North Pole.
- 1:21:25Speaker 3: It's all a bunch, a bunch of market hell.
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: Don't bother celebrating Christmas.
- 1:21:43Speaker 12: I don't care what's on your list. Don't bother celebrating Christmas.
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: I don't care about.
- 1:21:51Speaker 12: Your crummy gifts.
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: Do the steam work it.

- 1:22:30Speaker 12: .
- 1:22:32Speaker 3: I'm on my fucking lunch break, okay?
- 1:22:37Speaker 10: Are you insane?
- 1:22:39Speaker 9: Management's going to hear about this.
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: Think that's a threat?
- 1:22:43Speaker 4: If you think you can make my fucking life any worse,
- 1:22:45Speaker 4: you go right ahead.
