- 1:32for the life of the world.
- 1:34Amen.
- 1:43Welcome into the arena.
- 1:45This is the Arena Blaze podcast, and I
- 1:48am your host, your willing host, Marco Sandoval.
- 1:51Count of Monte Cristo, thank you, Marco.
- 1:54I am joined, as always, by my fellow
- 1:56son-of-a-muck, Todd Powers.
- 1:59Todd Powers.
- 2:00Thank you all for joining us.
- 2:01We're going to find out.
- 2:03Today's the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, so
- 2:07it's been a great day.
- 2:08It has.
- 2:09It's a feast day in the Catholic Church.
- 2:12Yeah, a little mass this morning, a little
- 2:14adoration.
- 2:15You did a little bit more than me.
- 2:17What is interesting, it struck my mind this
- 2:19morning.
- 2:19I always think of the Eucharist as the
- 2:22Sacred Heart.
- 2:23I'm eating the Sacred Heart, body, blood, soul,
- 2:27and divinity, and then I go to adoration
- 2:28and I look at the monstrance and I
- 2:30think, that's the Sacred Heart right there in
- 2:33front of me.
- 2:34So, yeah, it was moving today.
- 2:37Today we're going to be kicking off the
- 2:39Arena Blaze.
- 2:41This will be our first episode.
- 2:44Just kind of going over why we're doing
- 2:49this, what was the inspiration for it.
- 2:52To me, it's just, I hear a lot
- 2:55from particularly men, it's particularly men-focused, but
- 2:59it's for everyone.
- 3:01Just a practical, the practical layman perspective in
- 3:05the arena every day.
- 3:07The arena of life.
- 3:08The arena of life.
- 3:09What are we really doing here?
- 3:11We move into different arenas, work, family, church,
- 3:17sport, for sure.
- 3:19So we're not theologians, we're laymen.
- 3:24I'm not going to be able to quote
- 3:25you scripture out of the Bible.
- 3:27We're familiar, we've done a lot of different
- 3:30things along the way.
- 3:31Lifelong Catholics.
- 3:33Experienced, falling down, and God's mercy raising us
- 3:36back up.
- 3:37We just want to share that perspective.
- 3:40We want to give that witness to others,
- 3:42because it does seem like men often put
- 3:47masks.
- 3:47We suffer in silence, we don't know what
- 3:50we're doing.
- 3:51I'm kind of making this up as I
- 3:52go, other people have to have the same
- 3:54struggles as me.
- 3:56Yeah, exactly.
- 3:56I want to know, how do you solve
- 3:57these problems?
- 3:58How do you live a life dedicated to
- 4:01being saintly and holy?
- 4:03We're very programmed to be macho men, to
- 4:06be providers, to project this, we have everything
- 4:09put together, we know what's going on, our
- 4:12family's good, our kids are perfect, our bank
- 4:15account's nice.
- 4:17At least to the outside world.
- 4:19Oftentimes, well always, that stuff kind of hides
- 4:23a woundedness, and shame.
- 4:30When you fall in sin, shame, we know
- 4:32that the devil wants to divide, he's the
- 4:34divider.
- 4:35Wants to put us in chains, and he
- 4:37wants to put us in the shadows, and
- 4:39we believe that having these kind of conversations
- 4:41with other men brings it to light, where
- 4:44the light of Christ can heal it.
- 4:46I don't know about your family, but I
- 4:47know my family has generational dysfunction, and a
- 4:51lot of my brothers and sisters have done
- 4:53a really good job of identifying and rooting
- 4:55it out.
- 4:55I didn't really recognize I had generational dysfunction,
- 4:59I just thought my family was the greatest
- 5:01of all time, until the last few years,
- 5:03when I recognized my failings, and I saw
- 5:06those failings in my kids having kids, and
- 5:11I was watching how they are beginning the
- 5:14process of raising their children, and I'm just
- 5:16so proud of the differences that they're exerting
- 5:20on their babies, than what I did.
- 5:25My perspective is different, I came from a
- 5:27dysfunctional, broken family, where I didn't have a
- 5:30father in the home, I didn't know my
- 5:32father in the house, and kind of went
- 5:34through a series of stepfathers, and different situations
- 5:39that kind of left me wounded and acting
- 5:42out in ways that I kept wondering, why
- 5:46am I doing the things I'm doing, because
- 5:47I was born with a...
- 5:51So, throw that on top of that, throw
- 5:53that trauma, how do you feel you came
- 5:57to know the Lord, and how did that
- 5:59have an influential...
- 6:01Well, I feel I was very blessed, in
- 6:02that I was given this passionate love for
- 6:06God from a very young age, and my
- 6:09mother, for all the shortcomings of my youth,
- 6:12selected Catholic for me.
- 6:14I don't come from a Catholic family, I
- 6:16call myself, I'm a toddler Catholic, she believed
- 6:21that Catholicism was the truth, and I was
- 6:24baptized later, probably like three to five, and
- 6:28so, really it was just serving Mass, just
- 6:34really having a curiosity for the Mass, loving
- 6:38to serve it, and always looking towards God
- 6:41to get to know Him, and to grow
- 6:43in relationship.
- 6:44But it didn't stop either of us from
- 6:46doing the things we did, growing up, the
- 6:51partying and the...
- 6:52I don't want to use the F word...
- 6:55Well, it enabled me, I think, and as
- 6:58I look back, I feel like that love...
- 7:01I coach young girls softball, and I tell
- 7:04the girls all the time, the first place
- 7:05that Satan's going to try to get you
- 7:07is in your sexuality.
- 7:09So it takes that, like St. Augustine says,
- 7:12we're made with a restless heart, our heart's
- 7:15restless until it rests in God, and so,
- 7:18that's a very easy place to be compromised
- 7:21and perverted, and that's definitely what happened to
- 7:23me.
- 7:23That love for God was redirected into love
- 7:27for created things in the world, and pulled
- 7:31me off the path.
- 7:32It's easy to do, everybody's doing it.
- 7:34Exactly.
- 7:34I didn't see any influence that was going
- 7:37to say, Todd, there's grace in denying your
- 7:41temptation.
- 7:44Unfortunately, today, I recognize that, and I deny
- 7:49myself, but the grace I receive, albeit a
- 7:53great grace, is not the kind of grace
- 7:55you receive when your temptation is overwhelming and
- 8:00soul-crushing, and you go to great lengths
- 8:04to deny that.
- 8:06That's when you really feel God in your
- 8:09life.
- 8:09How much do you love me?
- 8:12Well, we're going to find out today.
- 8:14It's a long process, like for me, that's
- 8:18familiar to me that you say that now,
- 8:20but it took me probably 40 years to
- 8:22get to that place, and a lot of
- 8:25prayers, a lot of begging God to, I
- 8:28don't know why I do the things I
- 8:29do.
- 8:30I love you so much, I don't want
- 8:32to go to hell, please save me.
- 8:35When did that change from, I don't want
- 8:37to go to hell, to, I want to
- 8:38love you as much as possible?
- 8:40The school of Mary.
- 8:41For me, it's very specific.
- 8:43I mean, there's a path in my kerygma
- 8:47that led to that point, but my heart
- 8:50being pierced to the point where, instead of
- 8:53it being imperfect, love, fear of hell, fear
- 8:57of letting God down and doing the wrong
- 8:59thing, to being love of God and pursuit
- 9:02of loving God and trying to bring others,
- 9:05that was through the Marian consecration for me,
- 9:09multiple times.
- 9:10So you brought me into that consecration as
- 9:12well.
- 9:14Yeah, so this is the Arena of Blaze
- 9:16podcast, but we also do Men of Blue
- 9:19Army, which the point of the Blue Army
- 9:21men is to kind of bring men near
- 9:24the gate of Mary so that she can
- 9:27lead them to Jesus.
- 9:29I mean, that's the entire point of Mary's
- 9:31role in salvation history, is to bring us
- 9:33close to her son.
- 9:36And sports, that's another one I threw out
- 9:39there.
- 9:39That's kind of where the arena comes from.
- 9:41To me, sport, that's where the first place
- 9:43that I feel I learned it was, it's
- 9:48kind of a forge.
- 9:49You get out there and people are judging
- 9:51your performance, you're dealing with coaches, you're dealing
- 9:54with teammates, you're failing, you're working hard, you're
- 9:57exhausted.
- 9:59So to me, you're learning the virtues in
- 10:02a way that's not front and center.
- 10:05So I always say to my girls I
- 10:07coach, the two most important things in my
- 10:09life development was my faith, first and foremost,
- 10:13and sports, because that's where I understood kind
- 10:16of the fruits of hard work, understood being
- 10:20a good teammate, being a good sport.
- 10:23All those things that you learn, to me,
- 10:25are kind of directly related to virtue once
- 10:29you direct them properly.
- 10:30Were you a killer?
- 10:32I wouldn't say that.
- 10:33I was more like, from my upbringing, had
- 10:36a chip on my shoulder and was very,
- 10:39I judged myself very harshly.
- 10:41So I was trying to beat somebody out
- 10:43because that's how I valued myself.
- 10:47If I could win a spot, I would
- 10:49be more valuable.
- 10:50Do you think killers are born or are
- 10:51killers made?
- 10:54I think it's born.
- 10:56I think it's like leadership, it's born.
- 10:58I think it can be sharpened, it can
- 10:59be improved.
- 11:01You can maybe do more of that.
- 11:04You can learn some of that, but ultimately,
- 11:06to me, that seed is planted in you.
- 11:10That's the way I see it.
- 11:14So this is also, for me, to build
- 11:19an army of men on fire with the
- 11:21Holy Spirit.
- 11:21I started thinking about that, COVID.
- 11:25COVID kind of put us all in a
- 11:28strange place.
- 11:29One of the wonderful things that came out
- 11:32of it, as we know, God brings good
- 11:34out of everything, especially for those who love
- 11:37him.
- 11:39My biggest takeaway from COVID was there was
- 11:44a group of people that came together that
- 11:46were like a support group for the normal.
- 11:50I don't want to be politically incorrect, but
- 11:52for those of us who were like, what
- 11:54is going on?
- 11:55The world's upside down.
- 11:56I don't understand.
- 11:57I'm not afraid of this.
- 11:58I don't understand.
- 12:00And just this group rose out of kind
- 12:03of thin air.
- 12:03You and my brothers.
- 12:04Your brothers.
- 12:05Church militant.
- 12:06Yep.
- 12:07I was chilly most.
- 12:09And I came into that thinking, why don't
- 12:13we have this all the time?
- 12:15Why don't we have men and women meeting
- 12:20in a warehouse, discussing the issues of the
- 12:23day and how we respond to it in
- 12:25a faith-focused way?
- 12:27Like, I just loved it.
- 12:29And so when COVID kind of relaxed, that
- 12:31was a long history.
- 12:33We started in a warehouse and we ended
- 12:34up, you know, in Clonmel, and there was
- 12:37like a support group of, you know, the
- 12:39COVID vaccine and the people that were losing
- 12:42their or in threat of losing their jobs
- 12:44if they did something they didn't want to
- 12:45do.
- 12:45So there was like a bunch of kind
- 12:47of a group that came around that and
- 12:49I just started thinking, the Holy Spirit's at
- 12:52work and this catches.
- 12:56It's using trauma, catastrophic failure to bring people
- 13:01together.
- 13:02And we were focused on the right things,
- 13:04you know, all through that.
- 13:06Anytime I had conversations, I would say, I
- 13:10don't want to look down at the earth.
- 13:12I don't care about the mask and its
- 13:15effectivity.
- 13:15I don't care about the vaccine and its
- 13:17effectivity, any of that.
- 13:18Those are losing arguments.
- 13:20Let's look up.
- 13:21I want to look up.
- 13:22COVID made me decide there was not going
- 13:25to be any more one day I'm gonna,
- 13:27because that day stopped.
- 13:30When COVID came, the world stopped.
- 13:33And I kept thinking, I may never have
- 13:36the opportunity to learn how to be a
- 13:38bluesman and play guitar.
- 13:40So I started taking guitar lessons.
- 13:42There was a lot of things I began
- 13:45to do immediately as a story of my
- 13:47life, one day I'm gonna, and we can
- 13:50start that off with one day I'm going
- 13:52to be happy.
- 13:56That's what COVID taught me.
- 13:58We're not given the future.
- 14:04For me it was, okay, are you going
- 14:07to, again, I often say, I mean, I
- 14:13refer to these girls I coach all the
- 14:15time, but I tell them every sin begins
- 14:18with a lie, always.
- 14:19And typically that lie is you're telling yourself
- 14:23a lie and then everything else comes from
- 14:26that.
- 14:27So I just remember thinking, this is a
- 14:29lie.
- 14:31And so am I going to live in
- 14:32a lie?
- 14:33Am I going to be quiet and live
- 14:34in a lie?
- 14:35Or am I going to do the hard
- 14:37truth?
- 14:38See, I didn't believe that at all.
- 14:40I didn't believe anything.
- 14:41I didn't know what was going on, but
- 14:45I didn't believe it was a lie.
- 14:46Now my brothers did.
- 14:47It brought discord to my family, for sure.
- 14:51I was a little bit more skeptical of
- 14:56it being created purposefully, but I get where
- 15:01you're coming from.
- 15:02I was just a little bit more chill
- 15:04with the whole thing.
- 15:06I have a tendency to be a consummate
- 15:08overreactor.
- 15:09So my natural state as a healthier human
- 15:11is to assess and not jump to conclusions
- 15:16and assume positive intent.
- 15:19My thing was, I was coaching softball.
- 15:21This was the first decision point.
- 15:22I was coaching softball and they wouldn't allow
- 15:25us to practice, they wouldn't let us get
- 15:27together.
- 15:27We're out in the sun playing games.
- 15:30Who's they?
- 15:32Just you got to put your mindset back.
- 15:34It was, we weren't allowed to gather.
- 15:36And so the facilities that hosted us for
- 15:39practice weren't allowing us.
- 15:41But you could have went to College Hill
- 15:42Park or Blessed Sacrament, not Bald Diamond.
- 15:46I mean, possibly, but there was also a
- 15:48lot of pressure internal.
- 15:50I was part of an organization of softball.
- 15:52So a lot of the other coaches were
- 15:53putting a lot of pressure on people not
- 15:55to, because if you did...
- 15:56They didn't want you to get better.
- 15:58Yeah.
- 15:58And if you did, then they had pressure
- 15:59too, because it was always a mixed group.
- 16:02Some people were afraid and other people weren't.
- 16:04And my point was always, I'm not here
- 16:07to litigate your fear.
- 16:09If you're afraid and concerned and you have
- 16:11family issues, somebody who is susceptible, then by
- 16:16all means, take care of yourself.
- 16:18But those of us who don't have that,
- 16:21we should be allowed to live life as
- 16:24we see.
- 16:25And so the people were bleaching softballs and
- 16:27just cleaning everything.
- 16:28So tie that back into Arena of a
- 16:29Blaze.
- 16:30Let's tie that back into what we're trying
- 16:32to do here.
- 16:33Well, what I'm saying is I had to
- 16:34make decisions.
- 16:35So that immediate decision was I started Blue
- 16:38Army.
- 16:38I changed.
- 16:39I went away from that organization, started my
- 16:42own, and I wanted everything I did to
- 16:44be faith forward.
- 16:46So I started a Blue Army softball team
- 16:48and we began every practice and every engagement
- 16:51talking about the faith to young people.
- 16:55So that was like step one.
- 16:57Then the next thing that shortly followed was
- 16:59I took my kids to another school because
- 17:04I wanted them to get out of masks.
- 17:06So it was just a...
- 17:10How I would tie it back to Arena
- 17:11of Blaze is it was just a consistent
- 17:14process of things being put in front of
- 17:16me.
- 17:17Are you going to do the easy thing,
- 17:19even if it doesn't feel right?
- 17:21Or are you going to do the more
- 17:23difficult thing that's in the truth?
- 17:25And so I continued to make that what
- 17:28I would say a fiat, saying yes to
- 17:30the truth, saying yes to my conscience multiple
- 17:33times.
- 17:33And that kind of led me down this
- 17:36road to where I'm willing, I'm the willing
- 17:39host, I'm willing to put myself out there
- 17:41because I feel there's a need, I feel
- 17:43it on my heart to do something like
- 17:45this.
- 17:45Well, I think the motif you've designed is
- 17:47absolutely beautiful.
- 17:49Why don't you talk to us, tell us
- 17:51about the...
- 17:53What was that?
- 17:54The logo?
- 17:55Yeah.
- 17:55This is the podcast logo.
- 17:58I would say first and foremost there, it's
- 18:02grounded in Luke 12, 49, where Jesus says,
- 18:05I have come to set the earth on
- 18:07fire and how I wish it were already
- 18:09blazing.
- 18:10I love that scripture.
- 18:12I love that word, blazing, it elicits an
- 18:18imaginative response in my mind.
- 18:20And then I just look at that and
- 18:23I'm like, he came to set the earth
- 18:25on fire and he wished it were already
- 18:27blazing.
- 18:28That makes me think, he wishes that we
- 18:31were doing something, that we were playing our
- 18:33role.
- 18:34So there's a role for us to set
- 18:37the world on fire with God.
- 18:40And so I just start thinking about that.
- 18:43I'm so conflicted by that because we're called
- 18:47to be forgiving and merciful and meek, we'll
- 18:51inherit the earth, but at the same time,
- 18:53there is a fire that we must have.
- 18:56And with me in my life, I am
- 18:59naturally wanting to jump.
- 19:02I'm conflict, I love a conflict, verbally, physically.
- 19:08Now I'm too old to do any of
- 19:11that anymore, but I try to tone down
- 19:13my rhetoric and I try to tone down
- 19:15any altercations and so it's very confusing for
- 19:20me.
- 19:20And we've talked to one of the guys
- 19:21in our group and he would like to
- 19:23be more assertive at the same time I'm
- 19:25trying to chill.
- 19:27More chill, less accelerator.
- 19:31I think it's just amazing how God works.
- 19:35So in my mind, I love that scripture
- 19:38and I think my initial response to it
- 19:42would be, yeah, it's time for a new
- 19:43crusade.
- 19:44Look at the world around us, it's so
- 19:46backwards, it's so crazy, it's at our doorstep,
- 19:49it's in our schools and I want to
- 19:52fight.
- 19:53But the more you walk through it, the
- 19:55fire that we're looking at and talking about
- 19:58here is the Holy Spirit.
- 19:59It's the Holy Spirit.
- 20:00He wants the earth set ablaze in the
- 20:03Holy Spirit, just like at Pentecost.
- 20:06Just like when peace is oneness with God,
- 20:08right?
- 20:09He offers peace, but not as the world
- 20:11offers it.
- 20:12So it's been in a development and an
- 20:15unpacking and Father Carney plays a huge role
- 20:18in this because in my mind as I'm
- 20:20thinking, I want to build an army and
- 20:23I want to set the world on blaze
- 20:24and I want to storm the gates of
- 20:26hell that will never be able to stand
- 20:27against us, but we need a sword.
- 20:30What's the sword for all this?
- 20:32Are we really meant to have another crusade?
- 20:35Is it crusading?
- 20:37It just doesn't seem right.
- 20:39In a godless world, in a godless society,
- 20:42yes, there's a crusade daily leaving the house.
- 20:45This is a masculine confliction for sure.
- 20:48This is like, what do we do?
- 20:51We need to do something.
- 20:52We're men.
- 20:53We're protectors.
- 20:53We're like ready to go, but what do
- 20:56we do?
- 20:56We're confused on what to do.
- 20:58I feel like we kind of get the
- 21:01wind taken out of our sails, but as
- 21:04continuing with that, the Holy Face is there.
- 21:08You've got two swords crossed and the image
- 21:10of the face of the Veil Veronica is
- 21:13over those.
- 21:15So, to me, that image harkens back to
- 21:20the gospel.
- 21:23Jesus, when they leave the Last Supper, he
- 21:26says, talks to them about how they're going
- 21:28to have their money bag and the apostles
- 21:31say, Lord, look, there are two swords here,
- 21:34but he replied, it is enough.
- 21:36So the two swords echo to that, then
- 21:38they go out to the Garden of Gethsemane
- 21:39after that.
- 21:40So there's this two swords.
- 21:44And I've heard that said, the sword of
- 21:46the Spirit and the sword, like the physical
- 21:49sword, maybe being the two swords.
- 21:52There's two of us, so each of us
- 21:54has a sword as a man.
- 21:57But I like that they're sheathed in the
- 21:59Holy Face of Jesus because this new crusade,
- 22:02and I believe this, and I've got this
- 22:04from Father Kearney, my experience, when I saw
- 22:06him on about four o'clock talking about
- 22:09this Holy Face devotion, I thought, this is
- 22:13the sword.
- 22:14This is the sword.
- 22:16The Holy Face.
- 22:17The Holy Face of Jesus.
- 22:19I think it's in the book of Revelations
- 22:21where Jesus is depicted with a sword protruding
- 22:24from his mouth.
- 22:26This is what God's calling us for, the
- 22:30crusade in this day and age.
- 22:31He wants us to direct our golden arrows
- 22:35at his sacred heart, and he will exact
- 22:38the justice.
- 22:40He doesn't want the death of the sinner.
- 22:41He wants the conversion of the world.
- 22:44Don't you think it's a much easier gathering
- 22:49of soldiers to affect those closest to us?
- 22:55I did a poor job with my children,
- 22:59raising them in the faith that I seem
- 23:03to have now.
- 23:04I have a brother who I admire greatly
- 23:07in his resolve to raise children much, much
- 23:13more in the faith to be saintly.
- 23:18I was a Sunday-going Catholic, and I
- 23:22raised Sunday-going Catholics, and we went to
- 23:25confession.
- 23:27I never was able to really impart upon
- 23:31them the blessings of stewardship because I had
- 23:35a divorced household, and they got to live
- 23:39with their mom in addition to me.
- 23:42I never really was able to influence them
- 23:45in that regard.
- 23:47But those closest to us that we can
- 23:50affect are the soldiers that we can arm
- 23:53with the Spirit.
- 23:54You know, you're much further along in your
- 23:57faith and your love for Christ.
- 23:59I do love Christ.
- 24:00I don't feel it as strongly as you
- 24:02do as much as I feel like I'm
- 24:05called to do the right thing.
- 24:08That right thing is to follow Christ.
- 24:10That right thing is to be an honorable
- 24:12Catholic Christian man, to do things.
- 24:18I don't have the same feelings as, you
- 24:22know, you gave me the diary of Sister
- 24:23Faustina.
- 24:26Faustina, yeah.
- 24:27Faustina, and I open that up, and I
- 24:29read daily recordings of her life.
- 24:34And I put them down every time because
- 24:37I'm shocked at how lowborn I am, how
- 24:43far along.
- 24:45She was obviously shown.
- 24:47She was obviously given, shown.
- 24:52She knew, she knows, and she acted accordingly.
- 24:57And I'm just fumbling along in the dark.
- 25:00Yeah.
- 25:01Yeah, the saints are daunting to read that
- 25:03way.
- 25:03But I think you're 100% right.
- 25:05I agree with that.
- 25:07Instead of, I think sometimes we get distracted
- 25:10by looking too big and too far out.
- 25:14Really the hearts that you can affect and
- 25:16set on fire, like once your heart is
- 25:18on fire, you can catch hearts nearby on
- 25:21fire.
- 25:22This is why community is so important.
- 25:24This is why when I say army, army
- 25:28to me is like a community of souls.
- 25:31Like-minded individuals.
- 25:32Shared values, like-minded individuals that are, you
- 25:36know, witnessing to each other, helping each other.
- 25:42Like we have these meetings, the Men of
- 25:44Blue Army meetings.
- 25:45We get together, and I learn so much
- 25:47from other men.
- 25:49Like you say, I'm further along in my
- 25:50faith.
- 25:52Maybe, maybe not, but it doesn't matter.
- 25:55Up and down the line.
- 25:56My sister told me last night, stay close
- 25:58to Marco, he'll get you to heaven.
- 26:01Heather Hollowatch.
- 26:03I looked up and down the line.
- 26:05You look up, you look all around.
- 26:07I feel like each soul has something to
- 26:10offer that we just, we shine together.
- 26:13Like we're, we're not in competition.
- 26:15We are made to collaborate.
- 26:19We're made to help each other get to
- 26:21heaven.
- 26:22And so each person has their own talents.
- 26:25I don't know if the word's anathema.
- 26:27That's anathema to me, because winning is singular
- 26:31to me.
- 26:32But it's a team, right?
- 26:34I win, you lose.
- 26:35It's a team effort if we're on the
- 26:37same team.
- 26:38I know, I know, I know this now.
- 26:40But at the same time, it was something
- 26:45really changed in me when I recognized that
- 26:48my faith was calling me to run a
- 26:52race, to sprint to an unknown finish line.
- 26:56And as a former college basketball player that
- 26:59sandbag conditioning drills, because I was, I was
- 27:04just too big at my size and height
- 27:07to go all out whenever we did of
- 27:10anything of consequence, because I was saving myself
- 27:13for the moment of glory.
- 27:14And, but my faith requires me to sprint
- 27:19to an unknown finish line.
- 27:21And that's scary to me.
- 27:23That's terrifying because I'm running as fast as
- 27:27I can, all out, expending all energy, nothing
- 27:31in reserve.
- 27:32And Christ is saying, I'll get you here.
- 27:35Just keep running.
- 27:36Just keep running.
- 27:38I love it when we have these conversations,
- 27:40because that's exhilarating to me.
- 27:41Well, what are we...
- 27:42To me, it's exhausting and scary.
- 27:44What are we doing right now?
- 27:45Like, right now, that's what I feel like.
- 27:47I've just jumped into the darkness.
- 27:49Like why?
- 27:50I was thinking all that as I was
- 27:52coming here to meet you.
- 27:54Why in the world do I think I
- 27:55can do this?
- 27:57Do I even think I can do this?
- 27:58Do I even think, you know, but it's,
- 28:02I'm willing.
- 28:03It's on my heart.
- 28:05And...
- 28:05Well, I said I was going to talk
- 28:06about this.
- 28:07You know, one of my interests in this
- 28:09is that I'm tired of walking this by
- 28:12myself.
- 28:12And I show up at Mass, and I
- 28:14go through the motions, and I compare my
- 28:17insides to everybody's outsides.
- 28:20There have to be other men that, how
- 28:23are you doing it?
- 28:24What are you doing?
- 28:25How do you know you're doing the right
- 28:26thing?
- 28:27But you know, we show up, and everybody's
- 28:29smiling, and everybody's driving a pretty decent car,
- 28:32and they're all dressed nice, and we all
- 28:35leave and go on our way, and...
- 28:38What I like is, you know, kind of
- 28:41to that logo, we've got the Ece Fiat
- 28:45Magnificat on there.
- 28:48Ece, behold.
- 28:49So I was thinking of two things along
- 28:52those lines today.
- 28:54Mary says, behold, I'm the handmaid of the
- 28:56Lord when the angel comes to her.
- 28:58So behold, I am.
- 29:00Here I am.
- 29:01Which, I know we've been having a lot
- 29:03of conversation about it.
- 29:04Here I am.
- 29:06Jesus comes to you where you are.
- 29:09He comes down to you, and He raises
- 29:11you up.
- 29:12And then I was thinking about Jesus when
- 29:15He's with Pontius Pilate.
- 29:17And after He's scourged, He brings Him before
- 29:19the crowd, and He says, behold the man.
- 29:23You know, He's whipped and mutilated, and He
- 29:28says, behold the man.
- 29:29Right?
- 29:30They start chanting, crucify Him, crucify Him.
- 29:32You know, throughout life, I feel like that.
- 29:35Behold the man.
- 29:36Like, look at me, all wounded and filthy
- 29:40and, you know, all the things that I've
- 29:42done in my past life, and yet, you
- 29:45still want to have a relationship with me.
- 29:47You still want to...
- 29:48My wounds are on the inside.
- 29:50I'm lonely, I'm lost.
- 29:55I feel like I fail.
- 29:57I don't have any idea what I'm doing.
- 29:59I've told my kids, I've been 20.
- 30:01I know how to be 20.
- 30:02I'm 58.
- 30:03I don't know what I'm doing.
- 30:05I'm making it up every single day.
- 30:07But for the grace of God, there go
- 30:09I.
- 30:09I mean, I have an unbelievably productive life,
- 30:15lots of wonderful material things, but at the
- 30:19same time, there's this level of melancholy that
- 30:22just awaits to want to come out.
- 30:24And I think being around other people and
- 30:27hearing, I'm not the only one.
- 30:28And I think that's what's attracted me to
- 30:31this, is that this ministry, I suppose, if
- 30:36you want to call it, is, look, there's
- 30:39got to be more people that feel the
- 30:40way...
- 30:42You know, I had a coach coming up
- 30:44playing basketball.
- 30:45I had somebody to guide me, to believe
- 30:48in me when I didn't believe in myself
- 30:50and in my faith.
- 30:51I don't feel like I've ever had that.
- 30:53I don't feel like somebody's pulling me along
- 30:55and saying, yeah, we're going to go another
- 30:58150 miles on this sprint.
- 31:00And guess what?
- 31:01You're going to do it.
- 31:02You're going to do it.
- 31:03My favorite worst word in the English language
- 31:05is this word, again, again, again.
- 31:14That's what we do.
- 31:16I love the beauty of, you know, the
- 31:19juxtaposition, like, you know, I often will say
- 31:23I coach it or I teach adult confirmation
- 31:27class.
- 31:28And I'll often tell the people in the
- 31:30class that it's this beautiful mystery that it's
- 31:36through that Jesus heals us by his wounds,
- 31:39right?
- 31:40But it's through our own wounds as well
- 31:43that we're healed.
- 31:45So it's like there's this mystical meeting of
- 31:47wounds, our wounds and the wounds of Jesus.
- 31:51And through that is healing and salvation.
- 31:55So I love the idea of like what
- 32:00you're saying, your wounds are interior.
- 32:02I agree with that.
- 32:04And often they're hidden behind masks.
- 32:06But when we expose those wounds to each
- 32:08other and before God, vulnerable, vulnerability and transparency
- 32:13is what bonds humans together.
- 32:16That is what allows my marriage to grow
- 32:19the best when I'm vulnerable and transparent.
- 32:24And that's when they can be healed, when
- 32:26they're in the light, only in the light,
- 32:28when they're hidden away in shame, they're not
- 32:33the devil's just got you in chains and
- 32:35he can just continue to have his way
- 32:37with you.
- 32:38But once you put them out in the
- 32:39light and other people to hold you accountable
- 32:42and then then you have a chance.
- 32:45That's one of the things I'm worried the
- 32:46most about this, because there's some pretty serious
- 32:50language that I can use when it comes
- 32:52to this stuff that is not for public
- 32:56consumption in regards to the sins of man
- 33:00and the things we're all tempted by.
- 33:03And in our small group discussion, we talk
- 33:06about this, some of the struggles, especially the
- 33:09younger guys have and the amount of grace.
- 33:13Again, I mentioned this earlier that we received
- 33:16by denying that temptation and coming closer to
- 33:19the Lord is so much greater.
- 33:22It's just hard to talk about them in
- 33:25real terms.
- 33:26It turns people off.
- 33:27It's gross.
- 33:28It's nasty.
- 33:29It's disgusting.
- 33:30It's horrific.
- 33:32I can remember going through my divorce and
- 33:36the amount of drinking and bar hopping that
- 33:41I was doing.
- 33:41I would look at myself in the mirror
- 33:44at three o'clock in the morning in
- 33:45my bathroom and think, I don't know a
- 33:47single Catholic dad staring themselves in the mirror,
- 33:52drunk out of their mind that I respect
- 33:55and looked up to that is behaving like
- 33:57this.
- 33:58Yet here I am at J.
- 34:01That's why I'm in recovery.
- 34:05Yeah.
- 34:06And then then Fiat, Fiat's the next one
- 34:09saying yes.
- 34:11Right.
- 34:11At some time along that path, you said
- 34:16yes.
- 34:16And it's a series of yeses and it's
- 34:19yes every day.
- 34:20And it's a yes moment by moment.
- 34:22But God will present to you healing.
- 34:28I'll present to you a different path, a
- 34:31different choice.
- 34:33And that's why I think Fiat, you know,
- 34:35the mother Mary showing us, saying yes, because
- 34:39if you think about that situation that she
- 34:41was in, that was not an easy yes.
- 34:44I mean, you could, you could, a mere
- 34:47mortal could talk themselves out of that.
- 34:49Well, I'm betrothed.
- 34:50What's everyone going to think?
- 34:52Well, all these different things.
- 34:54So that yes brought a lot of trial
- 34:56with it.
- 34:58But it's continuing to say yes.
- 35:00Right.
- 35:00Every day, like you say, you're in recovery.
- 35:02That requires a yes.
- 35:03Yeah.
- 35:05You know, if if anybody watches this, you're
- 35:09going to see this as kind of a
- 35:10rambling conversation.
- 35:11And I'm not necessarily sure if we've reached
- 35:14the end of our time this afternoon, but
- 35:19that's probably going to be how a lot
- 35:20of this is.
- 35:21And Marco and I have a chemistry when
- 35:25it comes to a give and take.
- 35:26And maybe if I let my guard down
- 35:28a little bit and I'll talk a little
- 35:29bit more openly about things at some point.
- 35:32But you think we ought to wrap this
- 35:35up?
- 35:35Yeah, I think the last thing I'd say
- 35:36is the Magnificat.
- 35:38I mean, that's what we're doing.
- 35:40We're praising.
- 35:41You know, I'm here to praise God for
- 35:44his work in my life.
- 35:45What did you say the other day?
- 35:46Less of me and more of Christ?
- 35:48Yep.
- 35:49Less of me.
- 35:50When I'm weak, then I'm strong.
- 35:52Empty me, empty ourselves out so that Christ
- 35:55can fill us.
- 35:56Yeah, absolutely.
