Latest / The Gregg Bell Show / 5-19 H1: Mariners Get the W, Derek Berg (ICYMI) & Dreams Coming True
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: And it was I mean, Chuck used the words rock
- 0:02Speaker 1: bottom yesterday, like, hopefully the Mariners hit rock bottom over
- 0:05Speaker 1: the weekend. Because it was an ugly series against the Padres.
- 0:08Speaker 1: We were swept. I think everybody was feeling just kind
- 0:11Speaker 1: of gross about it. We wanted Colt Emerson to be
- 0:14Speaker 1: called up in some wonderful way where you know, it
- 0:17Speaker 1: was it wasn't that we needed him, but that he
- 0:19Speaker 1: was just playing so well we couldn't leave him in
- 0:22Speaker 1: Tacoma anymore.
- 0:23Speaker 2: But that didn't happen.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Brendan Donovan gets sent to the IL, Colt Emerson comes up,
- 0:27Speaker 1: his family doesn't have time to be there.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Just kind of a bad feeling all around when you
- 0:31Speaker 2: came off.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Of Sunday and then you come in today and it's like, oh, look,
- 0:36Speaker 1: this team can play baseball. And you could use the excuse,
- 0:38Speaker 1: well it's the White Sox, but we lost to the
- 0:40Speaker 1: White Sox in Chicago, So I don't know.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Do you what?
- 0:43Speaker 1: What?
- 0:44Speaker 3: Do?
- 0:44Speaker 4: Are?
- 0:44Speaker 3: You?
- 0:44Speaker 1: Just riding this roller coaster of emotions with every other Mariners.
- 0:47Speaker 5: Sithe and try not to just because I believe this
- 0:50Speaker 5: team is really good. They're not playing really good baseball unfortunately.
- 0:54Speaker 5: M I know, a lot of fans that are on
- 0:56Speaker 5: the text line they are critical. Hell, even on social
- 0:59Speaker 5: media they are very critical Shape and I have no
- 1:02Speaker 5: issue with it. I just used the excuse it's the
- 1:04Speaker 5: long season. But I understand how these games can come
- 1:08Speaker 5: back to haunt you in August in September when you
- 1:11Speaker 5: don't handle business like you should have and you find
- 1:13Speaker 5: yourself struggling at home like they have been. But Seattle,
- 1:17Speaker 5: the Mariners needed this, right they needed after being swept
- 1:20Speaker 5: by a good Padres team. Yeah, they need an opportunity to,
- 1:24Speaker 5: you know, dust the shoulders off a little bit and
- 1:26Speaker 5: play good baseball. Not to mention they're missing Kyle Raley,
- 1:30Speaker 5: their best player, right, They're also missing Donovan that just
- 1:33Speaker 5: went out, So they're missing some key guys to this offense.
- 1:35Speaker 5: And they were able to muster up some runs and
- 1:37Speaker 5: that's that's calling what you want to see. But it
- 1:39Speaker 5: has to be consistent and that is the key. I
- 1:42Speaker 5: love what Mike McDonald says about stacking wins. The manor's
- 1:44Speaker 5: got to stack some some good offensive play here in
- 1:47Speaker 5: the next few weeks and that will be nice to see.
- 1:48Speaker 5: The weather's getting better, so hopefully the Marine layer disappears
- 1:52Speaker 5: and they are able to get on base and be
- 1:55Speaker 5: proactive in that because I'm tired of one game they
- 1:59Speaker 5: play well and then two games later, nine strakeouts, nobody
- 2:03Speaker 5: gets on bays a couple of why I don't want
- 2:05Speaker 5: to see that be the theme of this team yet
- 2:08Speaker 5: again it's everyone says it's World Series or bust. I
- 2:12Speaker 5: don't want to say it's that for them because I
- 2:14Speaker 5: just want them to make it. I think if they
- 2:15Speaker 5: can make it, we could have that discussion then, But
- 2:18Speaker 5: just getting there, I think would be the thing that
- 2:21Speaker 5: everyone is wanting. And right now when you look at
- 2:24Speaker 5: this roster and this team after that series against the Podjet,
- 2:27Speaker 5: is was like, Okay, you're gonna be us. The White Stars,
- 2:29Speaker 5: as you mentioned, that beat them before that first game.
- 2:32Speaker 5: It's key and I'm not saying it's the entire season
- 2:35Speaker 5: on the line, but at the same time, it's like, Okay,
- 2:38Speaker 5: this is what we're expecting from y'all.
- 2:39Speaker 6: Let's let's let's get some consistency going. Let's see what
- 2:42Speaker 6: you can do. And I thought they did that.
- 2:43Speaker 5: Not to mention cold Emerson, that's a big opportunity for him.
- 2:47Speaker 5: By the way, I don't think he looked flustered. No,
- 2:49Speaker 5: I think he came out there and was confident, and
- 2:51Speaker 5: that's I think that's rare. You don't see too many
- 2:54Speaker 5: guys being put in the spotlight and play well. So
- 2:57Speaker 5: for most twenty year olds coming up in there swinging
- 3:00Speaker 5: at everything, trying to prove they belong Emerson, he looked disciplined, controlled,
- 3:05Speaker 5: and he was present in the moment.
- 3:07Speaker 6: He didn't let it get too big.
- 3:08Speaker 5: So I'm excited to see the growth and that could
- 3:10Speaker 5: be scary for the rest of the al. Now it's early,
- 3:13Speaker 5: it's you know, two games sample size, but I'm excited
- 3:16Speaker 5: for him and I think the sky is the limit
- 3:18Speaker 5: for him if he just you know, head down and
- 3:19Speaker 5: go out there and play ball well.
- 3:21Speaker 1: And that is the thing, Like, Yeah, he didn't come
- 3:23Speaker 1: up in the ideal way that we would have wanted
- 3:24Speaker 1: him to.
- 3:25Speaker 2: It wasn't perfect.
- 3:25Speaker 1: It all felt a little rushed, But either way, he's here,
- 3:28Speaker 1: and I think every single Mariners fan is so excited
- 3:30Speaker 1: to see about, you know, this kid, because he is
- 3:34Speaker 1: a kid that we have just been hearing about and
- 3:36Speaker 1: you know, seeing clips of and now to actually have
- 3:39Speaker 1: him be able to contribute to this team and do
- 3:41Speaker 1: it in a day and day out basis. Yeah, I
- 3:43Speaker 1: don't know how anybody couldn't be excited about that. You
- 3:46Speaker 1: brought up two interesting words in what you were saying there,
- 3:50Speaker 1: so you brought up consistency and proactive.
- 3:52Speaker 2: So yesterday we were talking about Dan Wilson and how.
- 3:56Speaker 1: It seems like he's always reacting to what another manager does.
- 4:00Speaker 1: He's never playing his own game and letting the other
- 4:04Speaker 1: team react to him. It's always I had said, it's
- 4:07Speaker 1: like everybody else is playing checkers, but Dan is trying
- 4:09Speaker 1: to play chess. He's trying to overcomplicate things, and I
- 4:13Speaker 1: just want us to be proactive. I don't want us
- 4:16Speaker 1: to be reactive. And it seems like the way we've
- 4:18Speaker 1: been playing this whole season is we are reacting to
- 4:22Speaker 1: what is happening to us, versus paving our own path
- 4:27Speaker 1: and making it our own game, making our own decisions,
- 4:29Speaker 1: and letting other teams react to us. It seems like
- 4:31Speaker 1: we're always behind. And so this isn't a day where
- 4:35Speaker 1: I'm gonna say, you know, anything bad about Dan Wilson.
- 4:38Speaker 1: I thought yesterday went well. I don't want to dwell
- 4:41Speaker 1: on anything negative or anything from over the weekend.
- 4:44Speaker 2: In terms of how he actually manages.
- 4:47Speaker 1: But I did think it was an interesting thing that
- 4:49Speaker 1: you said proactive, because that's something that I have been
- 4:51Speaker 1: thinking about a lot. And then as far as the
- 4:53Speaker 1: consistency goes, that's it. We need to be consistent. And
- 4:56Speaker 1: it's not just consistent with with stacking those wins. It's
- 4:59Speaker 1: the con consistency of play within each game. We are
- 5:03Speaker 1: not the same team game in and game out. I
- 5:06Speaker 1: mean it is either awesome pitching no offense, or offense
- 5:10Speaker 1: and the pitching's failing us. And so just to be
- 5:14Speaker 1: able to have that consistency to be the team, whatever
- 5:16Speaker 1: team we are. If we are the team that relies
- 5:19Speaker 1: on our pitching and gets just enough runs to get
- 5:22Speaker 1: the job done, okay, let's be that team. If we're
- 5:25Speaker 1: going to be the team that's gonna, you know, come
- 5:27Speaker 1: out and pop one open offensively, okay, and our pitching
- 5:31Speaker 1: does enough there to keep us in the game, let's
- 5:35Speaker 1: be that team. I'm fine, but it seems like we
- 5:37Speaker 1: never know which team we want to be. And I
- 5:39Speaker 1: suppose part of that is how this team is built,
- 5:41Speaker 1: right because we've got this great pitching staff, so we
- 5:43Speaker 1: are relying more heavily on that and then every once
- 5:45Speaker 1: in a while we've got these offensive boosts that, you.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Know, can show what our potential is.
- 5:51Speaker 1: But it would be nice to know kind of what
- 5:53Speaker 1: our team is because I still feel like we yeah,
- 5:56Speaker 1: I don't feel like we know that.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Do you feel like we know who this team is yet?
- 5:58Speaker 5: You know, Dan, Well, I don't know. I'm just I'm
- 6:01Speaker 5: learning every day more and more. But yeah, they don't
- 6:04Speaker 5: have an identity right now. And last season it was
- 6:06Speaker 5: the pitching, Yes, that was the identity. This year, you're
- 6:09Speaker 5: hoping that everyone takes that step up offensively, Yeah, and
- 6:12Speaker 5: it's not been the case. Shout out to Julio though
- 6:15Speaker 5: he's had a much better star, but that's one you know.
- 6:18Speaker 5: Obviously Randy Rose Arena, he's playing better, he's but we're
- 6:21Speaker 5: in consistency right.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Well, Randy, I will say, is the most consistent person
- 6:26Speaker 2: we've got.
- 6:26Speaker 5: But we're talking about, you know, two guys out of
- 6:28Speaker 5: the roster and now Kyle's out.
- 6:30Speaker 6: So it's.
- 6:32Speaker 5: This is what makes a World Series team going through
- 6:35Speaker 5: the fire, having a rough start, finding some consistency at
- 6:39Speaker 5: this point in the season, and then building on that.
- 6:42Speaker 5: I mean, if you do all those things I'd rather
- 6:45Speaker 5: this team struggle now than struggle in like July. Yeah,
- 6:48Speaker 5: I get through this now, have a rough patch. And
- 6:51Speaker 5: it sounds crazy to say, but if they, you know,
- 6:53Speaker 5: have a win streak here and there throughout the season
- 6:56Speaker 5: and they just create a gap in the Al West,
- 6:58Speaker 5: no one's going to look back and say, oh, that
- 7:00Speaker 5: was stupid. It's gonna be like, oh, they've learned and
- 7:03Speaker 5: earned this opportunity. They had to go through something to
- 7:05Speaker 5: get here. Oh they missed Kyle for a couple of weeks. Oh,
- 7:07Speaker 5: Ray Donovan all this other stuff. Maybe actually I can
- 7:10Speaker 5: put that out there, But the point is things happen.
- 7:12Speaker 5: How does this reteam react and so far after one
- 7:15Speaker 5: game it's like, okay, cool, But to your point, can
- 7:18Speaker 5: you stack it? Can you choke some consistency? Can you
- 7:21Speaker 5: handle this? Can you sweep these guys and go onto
- 7:23Speaker 5: the next series and build off of that? I think
- 7:26Speaker 5: that is kind of going to be this blueprint for
- 7:29Speaker 5: this team for the rest of the season.
- 7:30Speaker 6: Is that fair? Sure?
- 7:32Speaker 5: How much blame does Dan Wilson get We'll find out,
- 7:35Speaker 5: because I feel every night is different. Yeah, it's always
- 7:38Speaker 5: going to be a different things and be faced with oh,
- 7:40Speaker 5: do I pinch hit here.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Am I relying on the sabermetrics here?
- 7:44Speaker 5: Yeah, and it's gonna be a battle, but the good
- 7:47Speaker 5: managers figure it out.
- 7:48Speaker 6: And I think he is a talented young manager.
- 7:50Speaker 5: I just I don't know how long they want to
- 7:53Speaker 5: put up with it Versus a fan just like nope,
- 7:55Speaker 5: I'm done with them, because you can imagine if they
- 7:57Speaker 5: had lost last night, many fans would have been and
- 8:00Speaker 5: like fire Dan immediately.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Yeah, and he does need to develop more of a
- 8:04Speaker 1: feel for the game. I think they are relying too
- 8:06Speaker 1: much on what the statistics tell them. And again that
- 8:10Speaker 1: reaction and it's like, no, just have a feel for
- 8:13Speaker 1: the game. That's that's part of your job.
- 8:15Speaker 5: Yeah, and he played the game, so you would think
- 8:17Speaker 5: Dan is the perfect example of a feel for the game,
- 8:22Speaker 5: knows what to expect, can think outside the box and say,
- 8:25Speaker 5: you know what they're doing this, I'm going to react
- 8:27Speaker 5: to how I've played the game and how I've seen
- 8:29Speaker 5: it grow over the years. This is what I think
- 8:31Speaker 5: we should do, versus analytics is telling me, Okay, well
- 8:34Speaker 5: we should pinch it here because blah blah blah blah blah,
- 8:37Speaker 5: and the you know, you have a fifty percent chance. Well,
- 8:39Speaker 5: you know what, I think this kid's better, so I'm
- 8:40Speaker 5: gonna leave him out there. So I think that is
- 8:42Speaker 5: maybe a struggle for Dan. Obviously, I don't know that
- 8:44Speaker 5: for a fact. Hell, he might say it's not a
- 8:46Speaker 5: problem at all.
- 8:46Speaker 1: But or maybe they're not giving him a chance to
- 8:48Speaker 1: do that and they only want him to rely on
- 8:49Speaker 1: the matter.
- 8:50Speaker 5: We don't know that either. We don't already respeculating ladies
- 8:53Speaker 5: and gentlemen. So my thing is, it's all about just
- 8:56Speaker 5: as you mentioned, having a feel being like and he's
- 8:58Speaker 5: played the game.
- 8:59Speaker 6: He was a catch.
- 9:00Speaker 1: I was gonna say, not only played the game, he
- 9:01Speaker 1: was a catcher, Like, he's overseen everything, he's got his
- 9:05Speaker 1: eyes and.
- 9:07Speaker 6: Of this defense here. Yeah, so I need you to
- 9:09Speaker 6: quarterback it.
- 9:10Speaker 5: Yeah for the manager, Now, okay, quarterback the team you
- 9:14Speaker 5: see and what you're seeing, what you're seeing out there,
- 9:16Speaker 5: how can you make it work and put this team
- 9:18Speaker 5: in the best position to get a series win, to
- 9:21Speaker 5: win the first game, et cetera, et cetera. So that's
- 9:23Speaker 5: that's gonna be interesting to see. And I yeah, getting
- 9:26Speaker 5: swept over the weekend, I think the energy just felt
- 9:28Speaker 5: flat from everyone and obviously the fan base is gonna
- 9:32Speaker 5: be frutrated. I don't think any fans like it's okay,
- 9:34Speaker 5: got swept by a good team onto the next That's
- 9:36Speaker 5: not the case. It's not as if they're thirty and
- 9:38Speaker 5: fifteen and they got swept. They're actually struggling and got swept.
- 9:43Speaker 5: So it's like, not not fun, and there's questions everywhere.
- 9:47Speaker 5: But I think now you just quiet the noise for
- 9:49Speaker 5: a day and then okay, what about today? What's the
- 9:51Speaker 5: plan to day? How do you manage it? And they're
- 9:53Speaker 5: doing a little something different. I know we kind of
- 9:54Speaker 5: talked about it off wax, but yeah, it's I'm excited
- 9:58Speaker 5: to see what they do tonight and hopefully it turns
- 10:00Speaker 5: out to be another Mariners w Is that too much
- 10:03Speaker 5: to ask for?
- 10:04Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, I don't think it is. I mean, can
- 10:06Speaker 1: we build off? I don't want to say the word
- 10:07Speaker 1: too loud because it does scare the Mariners.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Can we build off the momentum there?
- 10:12Speaker 1: So we'll say it quietly that way, nobody heard over
- 10:14Speaker 1: there at T Mobile Park.
- 10:15Speaker 2: No one gets scared. It's all right.
- 10:18Speaker 1: So yeah, tonight we are piggybacking, which I'm excited to
- 10:21Speaker 1: see how this works. I was I kind of that
- 10:24Speaker 1: is a great question. I don't know, No, I don't know.
- 10:28Speaker 6: I like it. I just was like piggybacking. I mean,
- 10:31Speaker 6: I get why they're doing it makes sense.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Makes it makes sense.
- 10:33Speaker 1: So here's the kind of a question though, that's been
- 10:35Speaker 1: going around in my head and since they decided they
- 10:38Speaker 1: were doing this. When they come up with it, they say, Sunday,
- 10:40Speaker 1: I think, so, are we doing the right thing? Is
- 10:44Speaker 1: this the best choice? Or is this the safe choice?
- 10:47Speaker 1: And I think what I've actually come up with is
- 10:49Speaker 1: it is both. So is it the safest choice? Yes,
- 10:52Speaker 1: because you're not making the decision right now to either
- 10:56Speaker 1: go with Luis or Bryce. You're allowing them both to
- 11:00Speaker 1: show what they can do, especially with Bryce coming off
- 11:02Speaker 1: the IL and Louis struggling, like, let's just see if
- 11:06Speaker 1: they can, if this can work and kind of benefit
- 11:08Speaker 1: them both. Is it the best So from that, it
- 11:11Speaker 1: is a safe choice because you're not really making a
- 11:13Speaker 1: choice right You're you're not deciding, oh, we're going with
- 11:16Speaker 1: Miller or we're going with Castillo. You're saying, Okay, we're
- 11:17Speaker 1: going to use them both and hopefully to the advantage
- 11:21Speaker 1: of the team that will.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Get the best out of both of them.
- 11:24Speaker 1: I also do think it is the best choice because again,
- 11:28Speaker 1: you're not making that choice, you're not disrupting the regular rotation,
- 11:32Speaker 1: You're saving your bullpen. I think my only concern, or
- 11:36Speaker 1: my only question in this whole thing is are they
- 11:42Speaker 1: making the right choice in how they're using them. I
- 11:45Speaker 1: would prefer Castillo to start and Miller to come in
- 11:48Speaker 1: out of the bullpen, and that is based solely on
- 11:52Speaker 1: watching Castillo's starts, and he does put up a couple
- 11:55Speaker 1: great innings and then there's you know, a blow up
- 11:58Speaker 1: inning or where it just kind of things.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Get out of control.
- 12:02Speaker 1: So I would prefer to have Castillo in there starting,
- 12:05Speaker 1: So when that blow up inning happens, all right, now
- 12:08Speaker 1: you've got Bryce ready or Bridge reliever ready to come
- 12:12Speaker 1: in and relieve him when things get a little out
- 12:15Speaker 1: of control. Versus this way, you're going to rely on
- 12:18Speaker 1: Bryce for five innings probably and then hope that Castillo
- 12:22Speaker 1: can go four. Well, what happens if Castillo can only
- 12:25Speaker 1: go two? And yes, you've got the rest of your bullpen.
- 12:28Speaker 1: But did you really succeed in your piggybacking situation before
- 12:32Speaker 1: things got out of control for Castillo. So I just
- 12:34Speaker 1: feel more confident, I think in Bryce's ability to put
- 12:38Speaker 1: together four or five consistent innings versus Castillo's ability to
- 12:43Speaker 1: put together that many innings.
- 12:45Speaker 5: Yeah, I look at it from a short term standpoint,
- 12:47Speaker 5: as in it's smart and logical, as you kind of
- 12:49Speaker 5: alluded to. Long term, I think it'll depend on whether
- 12:54Speaker 5: Castillo stuff.
- 12:55Speaker 6: Does it improve? Yeah, because if it doesn't improve, well,
- 12:57Speaker 6: this is just another.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Then he's gonna Yeah, it's gonna be Miller getting the
- 13:01Speaker 1: start in the CEO, either relegated to the bullpen full
- 13:05Speaker 1: time or I don't know what.
- 13:06Speaker 5: Happens, so a bullpened emotion and more like the manner's testing,
- 13:10Speaker 5: maybe some postseason style pitching that could be beneficial to them.
- 13:14Speaker 6: So it's a it's a good model.
- 13:16Speaker 5: To throw out in May, and the hope is it
- 13:19Speaker 5: does work out and we're not having a discussion like,
- 13:21Speaker 5: well that.
- 13:21Speaker 6: Was a total failure. What hex Dan Wilson, What do
- 13:23Speaker 6: you have up your sleeve? So I do. I like
- 13:26Speaker 6: your idea of actually just having Bryce started off, but.
- 13:32Speaker 1: I want ask to do it right well, And I
- 13:34Speaker 1: think that's where it comes into more of the safe
- 13:36Speaker 1: decision as well, Right, you're not, so, I know I
- 13:41Speaker 1: wanted Castillo to start it off, Okay, my yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 13:43Speaker 1: Castillo to started off. So I think I was surprised
- 13:46Speaker 1: actually that they're doing it this way because I would
- 13:48Speaker 1: have thought the more safe decision for them would be
- 13:50Speaker 1: because you know, everybody keeps talking about they don't want
- 13:52Speaker 1: to hurt feelings. Well, you've got these leaders. I think
- 13:54Speaker 1: we're I think we're not giving them enough respect. I
- 13:57Speaker 1: think that they're professional athletes. They want what's best for
- 14:01Speaker 1: this team. Are they going to be a little bummed
- 14:03Speaker 1: if they lose a starting position, Yes, absolutely, But are
- 14:06Speaker 1: they wanting what's best for the team and is the
- 14:08Speaker 1: ultimate goal of the World Series versus an individual accolade?
- 14:12Speaker 1: So I think in that case, we are putting a
- 14:14Speaker 1: little bit. I think we're speculating that there's going to
- 14:17Speaker 1: be hurt feelings or things like that, or the Mariners
- 14:19Speaker 1: are worried about that.
- 14:19Speaker 2: And I don't know that that is the case.
- 14:22Speaker 1: So I just think, yeah, I get I get a
- 14:24Speaker 1: little iffy about Castillo. I want to see Miller be
- 14:28Speaker 1: the reliever, so that he could be the one that
- 14:30Speaker 1: has to go longer if needed.
- 14:32Speaker 2: But you never know. I mean, this could be the
- 14:35Speaker 2: perfect way.
- 14:36Speaker 1: I'm sure that their analytics have figured out that Miller
- 14:39Speaker 1: starting and Castillo coming out of the bullpen is the
- 14:41Speaker 1: right way to go. So either way, I'm really excited
- 14:43Speaker 1: to see how it plays out tonight, that's for sure.
- 14:45Speaker 5: I think Castillo stuff could play better in the shorter burst,
- 14:48Speaker 5: and that's the hope I assume they can. Also maybe
- 14:51Speaker 5: he can sharpen up a few things for two to
- 14:54Speaker 5: four innings. That would be kind of the key, just
- 14:57Speaker 5: just tighter for him, not as lengthy. Yeah, think that
- 15:00Speaker 5: that benefits him hopefully, and he's facing less hitters now right,
- 15:05Speaker 5: you're gonna maybe face just this guy once as opposed
- 15:09Speaker 5: to Oh, you saw him three times already. Yeah, well
- 15:11Speaker 5: he knows your game.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, you're not going three times through the order.
- 15:14Speaker 1: He did come out of the bullpen during that game
- 15:17Speaker 1: five in the Alds against Detroit.
- 15:19Speaker 2: I was there.
- 15:19Speaker 1: It was awesome, But as Chuck has mentioned before, I mean,
- 15:23Speaker 1: that's a playoff situation that's totally different. Logan Gilbert came
- 15:26Speaker 1: out of the bullpen in that case as well. You know,
- 15:28Speaker 1: those guys in the playoffs, they're willing to do whatever.
- 15:31Speaker 1: It doesn't matter how much rest. It's all about the
- 15:33Speaker 1: end goal. And I think obviously right now the end
- 15:36Speaker 1: goal seems really far away because here we are in May.
- 15:38Speaker 1: But the end goal has not changed, right, It is
- 15:41Speaker 1: to get to the playoffs. And I know people get
- 15:43Speaker 1: so angry when they hear the words it's early.
- 15:45Speaker 2: It's not that you.
- 15:47Speaker 6: Gotta find a new word for it, I guess maybe.
- 15:49Speaker 1: But it's not that these games don't matter, because yes,
- 15:51Speaker 1: you get to the end of the season and he
- 15:52Speaker 1: missed the playoffs.
- 15:53Speaker 2: By one game.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Well, yeah, you can look back at April and say, well,
- 15:57Speaker 1: I almost said a bad word.
- 15:58Speaker 2: We had a crappy month, you know. But and so
- 16:01Speaker 2: those games made a difference.
- 16:02Speaker 1: And here we are missing the playoffs in September, and
- 16:06Speaker 1: we can look back and say it's because of the
- 16:10Speaker 1: terrible baseball we were playing early on in the season.
- 16:14Speaker 1: That's not what it's early means. It just means there's
- 16:16Speaker 1: still a lot of time to turn things around. And
- 16:20Speaker 1: I think in this case, not relying on Castillo to
- 16:23Speaker 1: be going on his own every five days is the
- 16:26Speaker 1: right way to do it. I think you've got a
- 16:28Speaker 1: fresh Bryce Miller who is just now obviously coming off
- 16:31Speaker 1: the il, so his arm's gonna be fresh, and I
- 16:33Speaker 1: think that the two of them, I think it's gonna
- 16:35Speaker 1: be great.
- 16:35Speaker 2: I'm very excited. I hope that I'm correct.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Again, don't be afraid of the momentum, Mariners, don't be
- 16:40Speaker 1: afraid of the momentum.
- 16:42Speaker 2: We when to start off the hour.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Obviously, we played the Colt Emerson home run, talked a
- 16:47Speaker 1: little bit about him living out his dream obviously playing
- 16:50Speaker 1: in the major leagues. You hit your first home run
- 16:52Speaker 1: in front of your family, in front of your home crowd.
- 16:55Speaker 1: I mean, it doesn't get much more perfect than that.
- 16:58Speaker 1: So that is gonna be the theme kind of of
- 17:00Speaker 1: our show, living out your Dreams? Has there ever been
- 17:02Speaker 1: a time Listeners and kid, I'm going to ask you
- 17:04Speaker 1: the same thing where you can look back on your
- 17:07Speaker 1: sports career at whatever level and say, yeah, I lived
- 17:10Speaker 1: out my dream in this moment or this was my
- 17:12Speaker 1: dream and I achieved it. So we're going to talk
- 17:15Speaker 1: about it, the two of us as well. I also
- 17:16Speaker 1: want Listener in put you were college, well, but I
- 17:20Speaker 1: mean I have one specific moment I won a national championship,
- 17:23Speaker 1: and that was not living out the dream.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Actually so, oh wow, there the ring in I got
- 17:28Speaker 2: to see you. I'll bring it in. It looks like
- 17:29Speaker 2: a high school ring, it's a ring. I don't care
- 17:31Speaker 2: what it look I'll bring it. I'll bring it in.
- 17:33Speaker 1: And and so, you know, you you get these specific moments.
- 17:37Speaker 1: And my one of my good friends, one of mine
- 17:41Speaker 1: and my husband's good friends, got to live out his
- 17:43Speaker 1: dream last week. He played in the PGA Championship, in
- 17:46Speaker 1: his first ever PGA Tour event, and it was in
- 17:48Speaker 1: a major championship.
- 17:49Speaker 2: That was his dream.
- 17:50Speaker 1: And I thought it was really just fun to catch
- 17:52Speaker 1: up with him after the tournament get to talk to him.
- 17:54Speaker 1: So we're going to hear from him coming up, Derek
- 17:56Speaker 1: Berg coming up after this. But I also want you
- 17:59Speaker 1: to text in to the Tacoma Dodge text line four nine,
- 18:01Speaker 1: four or five one. Tell us any moments where you
- 18:04Speaker 1: got to live out your dream. You can also hit
- 18:05Speaker 1: us up on YouTube, you can hit us up on Twitter.
- 18:08Speaker 1: And I want to know these specific dreams because we're
- 18:10Speaker 1: going to kind of use those throughout the show. We're
- 18:11Speaker 1: gonna definitely read a bunch of the med at eleven
- 18:13Speaker 1: thirty as well. But yeah, it's all about dreams today
- 18:16Speaker 1: Colt Emerson hitting his first home run last night, and
- 18:19Speaker 1: Derek Berg playing in this first major over the weekend.
- 18:22Speaker 1: We're gonna hear from him next. Sports Radio ninety three
- 18:24Speaker 1: three KJRFM. Sports Radio ninety three three KJRFM Ashley Ryan,
- 18:41Speaker 1: Christopher kidd In. Greg Bell is on vacation watching his
- 18:45Speaker 1: daughter graduate from the Coast Guard Academy.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Did I get that right? I didn't make that up?
- 18:49Speaker 6: Did I nailed it?
- 18:50Speaker 2: Okay? A lot of pressure there. So he will be
- 18:53Speaker 2: back on Friday.
- 18:54Speaker 1: You'll have us to tomorrow today and tomorrow, and I
- 18:57Speaker 1: believe Benton on Thursday. My yes, takes a village to
- 19:01Speaker 1: fill in for Greg Bell, that is for sure. So
- 19:04Speaker 1: the theme of our show today is living out your dream.
- 19:06Speaker 1: We talked about cold Emerson getting to live out his
- 19:08Speaker 1: dream last night, hitting his first major league home run
- 19:11Speaker 1: in front of his friends and family and the home
- 19:13Speaker 1: crowd as the Mariners beat the White Sox. And my
- 19:17Speaker 1: friend Derek Berg got to play in his first ever
- 19:20Speaker 1: PGA Championship. And for non golfers, maybe people don't understand
- 19:24Speaker 1: what a big deal that is. But there are four
- 19:26Speaker 1: major tournaments a year, and to be able to play
- 19:29Speaker 1: in any event on the PGA Tour is a pretty
- 19:31Speaker 1: big deal. To be able to play in a major
- 19:33Speaker 1: is a very big deal. He has worked a long
- 19:36Speaker 1: time for this, and so I caught up with him
- 19:38Speaker 1: on Sunday night and I wanted to play some of
- 19:40Speaker 1: this for you guys, and we just started by basically
- 19:43Speaker 1: me asking him straight up, is this his dream?
- 19:46Speaker 2: How would you describe this past week?
- 19:49Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely was living a dream. So one experience, least
- 19:56Speaker 3: kind of do it once. Hopefully you do it many
- 19:58Speaker 3: more times. But yeah, I was quite the experience.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Okay, you get to the course on Monday morning? What
- 20:04Speaker 1: time did you get there?
- 20:05Speaker 3: I get there bright and early. I got there at
- 20:07Speaker 3: seven am and saw mister Justin Thomas hitting balls, the
- 20:11Speaker 3: only other one on the driving range at that time.
- 20:13Speaker 1: So when did it sink in though, like I'm here
- 20:16Speaker 1: to play in a major golf championship.
- 20:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I say later that morning, you know when everybody
- 20:22Speaker 3: kind of kind of started getting there. It was really
- 20:25Speaker 3: slow Monday morning. You know, it didn't get all the
- 20:27Speaker 3: guys didn't start getting going till probably around ten or eleven.
- 20:31Speaker 3: And then I played really late in the afternoon that day.
- 20:33Speaker 3: I played nine holes with Bob McIntyre and I played
- 20:38Speaker 3: like three or four holes with Jordan's feast, So that
- 20:43Speaker 3: afternoon it was it was definitely, you know, everybody pretty
- 20:46Speaker 3: much gotten there. So yeah, the range was full, putting
- 20:50Speaker 3: greens with full guys starting to play you know, nine
- 20:52Speaker 3: or eighteen holes. So yeah, that's when you kind of start,
- 20:56Speaker 3: you know, seeing everybody and seeing everything and getting going.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Okay, So I will say for a lot of our listeners,
- 21:01Speaker 1: they know Bob McIntyre is Robert McIntyre.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Are you and Bob just now like so tight? You
- 21:07Speaker 2: just called Bob? Was he like, just call me Bob Man.
- 21:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I think we're pretty much best. He's at this point.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Look at what you gained this week.
- 21:15Speaker 5: I know.
- 21:16Speaker 3: But he's a great Dude's super easy to root for.
- 21:19Speaker 3: How a blast with him?
- 21:20Speaker 2: So oh that's awesome.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Okay, So you step onto the tea box with Bob
- 21:25Speaker 1: and Jordan Speith for your first practice round, were you like, oh, yeah,
- 21:28Speaker 1: this is just golf.
- 21:29Speaker 2: I can do this.
- 21:32Speaker 3: I definitely can do this. But no, it this wasn't
- 21:34Speaker 3: just golf.
- 21:35Speaker 2: No.
- 21:35Speaker 3: At that point too, they're like, having been a little
- 21:37Speaker 3: the crowd started getting a little bit bigger too, and everything,
- 21:40Speaker 3: but no, the practice runs were weird. I mean, it's
- 21:43Speaker 3: a couple of the guys I already knew, had already
- 21:45Speaker 3: played earlier in the morning, so it was just kind of,
- 21:48Speaker 3: like I said, I kind of dilly dollied most of
- 21:50Speaker 3: the morning in practice and stuff, and then was like,
- 21:53Speaker 3: you know it probably should go play nine holes and
- 21:54Speaker 3: then there's no tea time, so you just you just
- 21:57Speaker 3: stroll down there, and yeah, it's kind awkward sometimes because
- 22:01Speaker 3: you got you know, know, you don't know if the guys
- 22:03Speaker 3: have got groups or you know, they're waiting for others,
- 22:06Speaker 3: you know, so you're kind of just like, can I
- 22:08Speaker 3: play with you? And yeah, that's just kind of how
- 22:10Speaker 3: it goes. So I fortunately a little bit. I know
- 22:13Speaker 3: Michael Greller a little bit. So I saw Bob just
- 22:17Speaker 3: standing there, and then I saw Jordan come down. Then
- 22:20Speaker 3: I saw Michael. I was like, I joined you guys.
- 22:22Speaker 3: He's like, I don't know, Jordan's gonna ask Bob and
- 22:24Speaker 3: we might have to ask Bob. And then ten seconds later,
- 22:28Speaker 3: all our balls are in the air. We're walking downtown.
- 22:30Speaker 2: So that's crazy. Bob said yes.
- 22:33Speaker 3: Bob said yes, you left Jordan and I joined him.
- 22:36Speaker 2: What a nice guy. What a nice guy.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Okay, so you get practice on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and
- 22:43Speaker 1: you mentioned Tuesday. I think it was you played with
- 22:45Speaker 1: Nick Taylor, right, former you dub and former you were
- 22:48Speaker 1: on the Canadian tour together, Is that right?
- 22:50Speaker 3: Yep, yep, So Nick and I kind of chatted a
- 22:53Speaker 3: little bit beforehand and then yeah we played. It was
- 22:56Speaker 3: me and Nick and then Austar Hurt played on Tuesday.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Nice So yeah, yeah, okay, so.
- 23:03Speaker 3: It was good to see Nick do well this week.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I was gonna say he was in I mean,
- 23:06Speaker 1: he was doing really well, especially on Saturday.
- 23:09Speaker 3: Just didn't have the finish he wanted kind of the
- 23:11Speaker 3: last nine. But yeah, he was in the mix.
- 23:13Speaker 1: You brought this up, so we're just gonna talk about
- 23:14Speaker 1: Let's talk about something that had nothing to do with you.
- 23:17Speaker 1: The Aaron Ryes putt today to seal his win. I mean,
- 23:21Speaker 1: was that one of the most incredible things you've ever seen?
- 23:24Speaker 3: That's a silly putt? I mean, well, that pin in
- 23:26Speaker 3: general is like, even though they were playing from one seventy,
- 23:29Speaker 3: I mean that pin is insane over there. Yeah, and
- 23:34Speaker 3: then you know he probably hit it exactly where you
- 23:37Speaker 3: meant to hit it about fifty feet to the right,
- 23:39Speaker 3: especially with a couple of shot lead. But then to
- 23:41Speaker 3: make that it was I was I would say, you're
- 23:48Speaker 3: you gave ten twenty handicaps that putt and they're putting
- 23:50Speaker 3: it in the water like that thing's not that far
- 23:52Speaker 3: from the water.
- 23:54Speaker 1: It was crazy like and you was so hard. Well,
- 23:57Speaker 1: you made a really good put on. Now I can't
- 23:59Speaker 1: it was like the thirty six foot putt that you
- 24:02Speaker 1: made for Bertie, wasn't it for Bertie?
- 24:05Speaker 3: On? God what, I don't know. I didn't have very
- 24:07Speaker 3: many of them, so hopefully.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Okay, first of all, here's the thing. Okay, so now
- 24:12Speaker 1: we're gonna go back to you in year round. So okay,
- 24:14Speaker 1: you've played hundreds of golf tournaments, right, but and you
- 24:17Speaker 1: practice on this course and then you go out there
- 24:20Speaker 1: on Thursday.
- 24:21Speaker 2: We're gonna go back to the very beginning of Thursday.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Now, what is it like when you step up to
- 24:26Speaker 1: the tea box on Thursday morning and you hear from
- 24:29Speaker 1: Washington Now on the tea box, Derek Burg.
- 24:32Speaker 3: We could probably can go back to Wednesday because when
- 24:35Speaker 3: I'm playing my practice round late in the afternoon and
- 24:38Speaker 3: all of a sudden, Mike Caddy and your husband say,
- 24:42Speaker 3: the tea times have just rolled out.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Oh yeah, because I sent it to five Iron, who
- 24:45Speaker 1: that's what we call him on our show five Iron.
- 24:47Speaker 3: Yeah, and I'm like with celu Kim and then in
- 24:52Speaker 3: front of me is Patrick Cantley and Stigala and Min Wooley,
- 24:57Speaker 3: and then right behind me is de shamb and Oberg
- 25:01Speaker 3: and Fowler, and right behind them is speeth Rom and McElroy.
- 25:05Speaker 3: I was like, I think there's gonna be some people.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Yeah, you're kind of in the mix of it.
- 25:11Speaker 3: And I was like, oh my god. So uh yeah,
- 25:14Speaker 3: like Thursday morning was there was the heart was going
- 25:19Speaker 3: from like the get go. So there's just nothing to
- 25:23Speaker 3: prepare for it. I mean tell you just you just
- 25:25Speaker 3: have to do it. It's just like you want to
- 25:28Speaker 3: learn to swim. Sometimes you got to jump in the
- 25:30Speaker 3: deep end, you know a little bit. So yeah, Thursday
- 25:33Speaker 3: was There's just no way I could have prepared for it.
- 25:36Speaker 3: It's just what it is. What it was. I was
- 25:39Speaker 3: super nervous just knowing there was going to be tons
- 25:42Speaker 3: of people following our little pod, I guess you would
- 25:47Speaker 3: call it. So, yeah, you go the first team and
- 25:53Speaker 3: couldn't feel my hands, to be.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Honest, okay, fair.
- 25:57Speaker 3: And yeah, heart was. I could feel it counding and
- 26:02Speaker 3: just wanted to get the ball moving forward, and I
- 26:05Speaker 3: did think you Yeah, so it was something I'll never
- 26:09Speaker 3: forget but hopefully be able to use going forward, you know,
- 26:13Speaker 3: in other tournaments and stuff like that. The next day
- 26:16Speaker 3: it was way easier in the morning and all the
- 26:18Speaker 3: way through my practice session and I got nervous on
- 26:20Speaker 3: the first tea again, but it was a little less
- 26:23Speaker 3: and it was Yeah, the next day was a lot
- 26:27Speaker 3: easier than it was first day.
- 26:28Speaker 2: So I could totally imagine that.
- 26:30Speaker 1: So even on that first day though, you tee off
- 26:34Speaker 1: and yeah, you're nervous. Everybody, I mean everybody could understand
- 26:37Speaker 1: that you would be nervous, but you did you calm
- 26:40Speaker 1: yourself down because your second nine you were one under.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I don't know. I mean, yeah, I think
- 26:46Speaker 3: it's just things got a little bit more comfortable. And
- 26:50Speaker 3: then yeah, I just I played fine the second nine,
- 26:53Speaker 3: but yeah, I think things got a little bit more
- 26:55Speaker 3: back to golf. Okay, for the lack of better words,
- 26:57Speaker 3: but yeah, I'm still even trying to figure out, like, yeah,
- 27:02Speaker 3: how all sudden things change, because it's just really hard
- 27:06Speaker 3: to describe when you go from every tournament you've basically
- 27:10Speaker 3: played in there's twenty people around it the most. Yeah,
- 27:15Speaker 3: all of a sudden, there is like five deep behind
- 27:19Speaker 3: the t box, five deep down both sides of the fararaway,
- 27:21Speaker 3: and then five deep behind each of green You. I mean,
- 27:24Speaker 3: you're basically just hitting down, you know, like what you
- 27:27Speaker 3: watch on TV all the time when you're watching any
- 27:29Speaker 3: of those guys play, and you go from never having
- 27:32Speaker 3: anybody to watch to do that. It's just it's just weird.
- 27:35Speaker 3: It's just different. You just like I said, there's unfortunately
- 27:38Speaker 3: no way to prepare for it, and you just get
- 27:40Speaker 3: in there and do your best. But yeah, I guess
- 27:42Speaker 3: I must have just kind of settled in a little bit.
- 27:44Speaker 1: So yeah, okay, so you finish day one, what was
- 27:49Speaker 1: the first thought that went through your mind?
- 27:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I was like, okay, got that done, basically like
- 27:56Speaker 3: one in the books. I can kind of go into tomorrow,
- 28:00Speaker 3: I expecting knowing what to expect.
- 28:02Speaker 1: Just looking back, what would you say was your favorite
- 28:05Speaker 1: moment of that whole week?
- 28:07Speaker 3: M I mean, as much as it was kind of
- 28:11Speaker 3: you know, nerve racking and stuff, I'd say it was.
- 28:15Speaker 3: It was pretty neat being able to be in that
- 28:18Speaker 3: well in the group with su Wu. He's a great,
- 28:21Speaker 3: great guy, you know, so it was a pretty comfortable
- 28:23Speaker 3: parent so that was good. But then to be in
- 28:24Speaker 3: that little like I said, lack of a better words
- 28:27Speaker 3: pod where it's superstars also surrounding the group, it was like, hey,
- 28:33Speaker 3: I've always wanted it, and I got it. There you go.
- 28:36Speaker 3: So it's like, you know, as much as it made
- 28:39Speaker 3: me feel nervous, it was like it's gonna help me
- 28:41Speaker 3: down the road. So yeah, so I think even as
- 28:44Speaker 3: much as it made me feel uncomfortable, that was probably
- 28:46Speaker 3: the best part. But yeah, just taking it all in,
- 28:48Speaker 3: I think all of it's great. I don't know if
- 28:49Speaker 3: there was. There was definitely nothing that was negative like Zilch.
- 28:54Speaker 3: There was nothing negative. It was it was all really
- 28:56Speaker 3: really good. I would just say there's a lot. You know,
- 28:58Speaker 3: you're kind of know you're looking over here, Okay, you
- 29:01Speaker 3: got to go practice over here. You know, it's really
- 29:04Speaker 3: hard to not get worn out in your first one
- 29:07Speaker 3: because you're just like trying to play well, you're trying
- 29:11Speaker 3: to practice, You're trying to take in everything that's going
- 29:14Speaker 3: on and you know you're getting to the course early,
- 29:17Speaker 3: and you're maybe staying later than you even should. It's
- 29:20Speaker 3: hard to not get worn out.
- 29:21Speaker 2: All right, well, I'll let you go.
- 29:23Speaker 1: You got to get back to life and kids and
- 29:25Speaker 1: being a dad and being a husband and sleep probably important.
- 29:28Speaker 3: I appreciate it. Thank you for everything.
- 29:30Speaker 2: I think we can all agree.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Right, when your friend accomplishes something, you feel like, oh
- 29:33Speaker 1: my gosh, I'm so proud.
- 29:35Speaker 2: You feel a sense of pride. I feel like not.
- 29:37Speaker 1: I didn't get to live out my dream obviously through
- 29:39Speaker 1: Derek getting to live out his dream, but it was
- 29:41Speaker 1: just so awesome to get to be a part of
- 29:43Speaker 1: it in any small way, and and so it you know,
- 29:47Speaker 1: it just gets you thinking, like, gosh, have I ever
- 29:49Speaker 1: had a moment like that where I've lived out my dream?
- 29:51Speaker 1: Have I ever made it to the big leagues and
- 29:53Speaker 1: hit my first ever home run like cold Emerson did.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Have I ever played in a PGA championship?
- 29:57Speaker 3: Well?
- 29:57Speaker 1: Probably not on that level for most of us, right,
- 30:00Speaker 1: but our dreams can kind of be relevant in their
- 30:06Speaker 1: own way, right. We can live out our own dreams
- 30:08Speaker 1: based on being normal people, right, We're not superstar athletes
- 30:13Speaker 1: and We're not professional golfers, but we are normal people
- 30:17Speaker 1: who have played sports, who have lived out our own
- 30:20Speaker 1: sports journey, and so I think I just would like
- 30:24Speaker 1: to hear from people on their own sports dream. It
- 30:27Speaker 1: doesn't have to be something necessarily that you even did.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Did you get to see something in person, did you
- 30:32Speaker 1: get to live vicariously through somebody else in your family.
- 30:35Speaker 1: You know, it can be at all different levels. So
- 30:38Speaker 1: you can hit us up on the text line the
- 30:39Speaker 1: Takoma Doadge text line at four nine four or five one.
- 30:41Speaker 1: You can hit us up on the YouTube chat as well. Kid,
- 30:44Speaker 1: I'm going to get your thoughts too on your sports
- 30:46Speaker 1: dream if you got to live out that moment. And
- 30:48Speaker 1: I'll just say mine personally, I'm a water polo player, right,
- 30:53Speaker 1: and I played water polo at USC, but I started
- 30:56Speaker 1: at a smaller college and my friend who went to
- 30:58Speaker 1: USC had me come visit because I didn't never think
- 31:01Speaker 1: I could play at USC, so it wasn't even really
- 31:03Speaker 1: on my radar, Like I applied to USC out of
- 31:06Speaker 1: high school, but not I didn't even talk to the
- 31:08Speaker 1: water polo coach because I thought, oh, that's so above
- 31:10Speaker 1: my level, And so I went to campus and I
- 31:13Speaker 1: saw the aquatics facility and I saw the coliseum and
- 31:17Speaker 1: I looked at my friend and I was like, I'm
- 31:19Speaker 1: going to play water polo here one day. And so
- 31:21Speaker 1: that was my dream, was to go to USC to
- 31:23Speaker 1: play water polo, and I did it, and then winning
- 31:26Speaker 1: the national championship just obviously icing on the cake. But
- 31:28Speaker 1: that wasn't even something I could have dreamt up like,
- 31:31Speaker 1: it hadn't gotten that far. It was just you're going
- 31:34Speaker 1: to play water polo at USC. Damn it if it's
- 31:36Speaker 1: the last thing you do. And so I remember meeting
- 31:40Speaker 1: the coach at a tournament, coach Jovann, and I said, Hey,
- 31:44Speaker 1: I want to come play for you, and he kind
- 31:46Speaker 1: of looked at me and he said, okay, when's your
- 31:48Speaker 1: next game? And I told him and he went and
- 31:50Speaker 1: watched it and he said come see me after your game,
- 31:53Speaker 1: and so I went up to him. He said, send
- 31:54Speaker 1: your application to me, and so I sent my application
- 31:57Speaker 1: in a week later I was accepted to USC. It
- 32:00Speaker 1: was just kind of a surreal experience, and getting into
- 32:03Speaker 1: the school wasn't you know, it was only half of
- 32:05Speaker 1: the dream. Getting to actually play in games in a
- 32:08Speaker 1: USC uniform was the full dream and it was pretty cool.
- 32:11Speaker 1: And I was listening today to the Morning Show and
- 32:14Speaker 1: Travis was talking about, you know, I know on a
- 32:16Speaker 1: different level, like from what Colt Emerson's parents are experiencing
- 32:20Speaker 1: watching him hit that home run last night. He said,
- 32:23Speaker 1: my kid's an eight year old pitcher in little league
- 32:25Speaker 1: and when he gets a strikeout, he's just so proud.
- 32:28Speaker 1: So you kind of have these little moments throughout life,
- 32:30Speaker 1: and these little things in your dreams are going to
- 32:34Speaker 1: change shape, and you know you're going to change the
- 32:36Speaker 1: level that you can achieve. But kid, do you have
- 32:38Speaker 1: a moment that you remember like that you achieved your
- 32:41Speaker 1: sports dream?
- 32:42Speaker 6: Because we're up against it, I will bounce back to
- 32:44Speaker 6: the other.
- 32:44Speaker 2: That's fair. I love it. See that's called a tease.
- 32:46Speaker 2: My friends. We'll be back with kids answer.
- 32:48Speaker 4: Sports Radio ninety three three KJRFM.
- 33:01Speaker 2: That feels funky and.
- 33:02Speaker 1: I like it.
- 33:02Speaker 2: Sports Radio ninety three three KJRFM.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Ashley Ryan Christopher Kidd in for Greg Bell today and
- 33:08Speaker 1: we are talking about living out your sports dream and
- 33:10Speaker 1: I am reading through these texts and YouTube on the
- 33:13Speaker 1: YouTube chat as well. We've got some great responses that
- 33:16Speaker 1: we were going to go over at eleven thirty, So.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Keep those coming in four nine, four or five one.
- 33:20Speaker 1: The Tacoma Dodge text line, and you can It doesn't
- 33:22Speaker 1: just have to be You don't just have to text
- 33:24Speaker 1: us your sports dreams. If you've got questions, if you've
- 33:26Speaker 1: got comments about anything we are.
- 33:28Speaker 2: Talking about, we will get to those.
- 33:30Speaker 1: At eleven thirty, I asked before the break, I asked
- 33:32Speaker 1: Christopher Kidd if he has ever gotten to live out
- 33:35Speaker 1: his sports dream.
- 33:36Speaker 2: So we're all on pins and needles waiting to hear
- 33:38Speaker 2: about it. Let's hear it.
- 33:39Speaker 5: This is a tough one because I've done multiple sports,
- 33:43Speaker 5: but I found a true passion and love and track
- 33:45Speaker 5: and field, and I wasn't sure if it would work
- 33:47Speaker 5: out for me, just because I had the quickness, but
- 33:50Speaker 5: I didn't really train for it. But I remember my
- 33:53Speaker 5: sophomore year I got to be an alternate at State
- 33:55Speaker 5: and all my teammates are talking about the Friday night
- 33:59Speaker 5: lights a fighty night, like you're thinking football.
- 34:02Speaker 6: But this is over there in Pasco, Washington. I don't
- 34:04Speaker 6: know if you've ever been.
- 34:04Speaker 5: Over there to their high school, but their track and
- 34:07Speaker 5: field it's like in a hole in the ground and
- 34:11Speaker 5: there's sand above all of it. It's really cool how
- 34:13Speaker 5: they do it. It's it looks it's like a coliseum,
- 34:16Speaker 5: it's like it's down on the track field. And then
- 34:20Speaker 5: at around eight pm when the four by four hundred starts,
- 34:23Speaker 5: the kick on the lights because that's the last event,
- 34:26Speaker 5: and sure enough I was actually able to participate. And
- 34:30Speaker 5: it wasn't a dream. I didn't like, oh I want
- 34:31Speaker 5: to do the four x four, and but the anticipation
- 34:35Speaker 5: of being a part of a team, being a sophomore
- 34:39Speaker 5: that's now being thrust into position to be a third
- 34:41Speaker 5: leg on the four bar four team, I was like,
- 34:43Speaker 5: oh snaps, I'm actually at State and there's hundreds of
- 34:47Speaker 5: people in the crowd, camera slash and you're just like,
- 34:50Speaker 5: oh my goodness, this is this is insane. And that
- 34:53Speaker 5: was like a moment where I was like, oh, maybe
- 34:55Speaker 5: maybe I can do something with track. And I ended,
- 34:57Speaker 5: you know, doing pretty well, but that was like, oh
- 34:59Speaker 5: my goodness, maybe basketball is you know, it's fun, but
- 35:04Speaker 5: maybe this is this might actually be something I can
- 35:07Speaker 5: go to college for and do that.
- 35:09Speaker 6: So that was kind of my like aha moment.
- 35:12Speaker 5: And then obviously I improved and took the time over
- 35:15Speaker 5: the summer and got better and did all these things
- 35:17Speaker 5: to become a better sprinter, and yeah, that was kind
- 35:21Speaker 5: of the moment I was like, oh, dream big here, buddy, this.
- 35:24Speaker 6: Is a this is pretty cool.
- 35:26Speaker 5: And then I did really well in the long jump
- 35:27Speaker 5: and that also was like, oh, I'm going to state
- 35:30Speaker 5: for that. This is a great feeling, like I'm up
- 35:33Speaker 5: there with the big dogs and before you know, you're
- 35:34Speaker 5: just the alternate. You know, you're you're not that fast,
- 35:37Speaker 5: but you're fast. So just finding my own way was like, Okay,
- 35:42Speaker 5: track and field is definitely the way for sports.
- 35:45Speaker 6: Yeah, I ain't gonna be no nerd.
- 35:47Speaker 5: I don't have the dedication to sit there and study
- 35:49Speaker 5: for an hour longer, but I had a dedication to
- 35:52Speaker 5: go out and grind, throwing up and running labs and.
- 35:55Speaker 2: Being so fun when you put it that way, throwing
- 35:58Speaker 2: up and running laps.
- 35:59Speaker 5: Yeah, being a printer is not for the week. It's
- 36:01Speaker 5: a mental game. I'm sure as a swimmer you know
- 36:04Speaker 5: it's mental because you're in that pool for hours, so
- 36:08Speaker 5: it's mentally tough to be in. They're not discrediting any
- 36:11Speaker 5: other sport, but yeah, it wasn't easy, but it was
- 36:14Speaker 5: definitely worth it.
- 36:14Speaker 6: And the opportunity to present itself.
- 36:16Speaker 5: So yeah, that would be the dream that I was like,
- 36:18Speaker 5: oh my gosh, I'm at State as an alternate, and
- 36:20Speaker 5: then that pushed me to want to go back to
- 36:22Speaker 5: State even more and become whether that be in one
- 36:25Speaker 5: hundred meters dash, two hundred, four hundred or the long jump,
- 36:28Speaker 5: just finding my own space to become a champion in
- 36:32Speaker 5: a different area, not just being a part of a
- 36:34Speaker 5: team on a relay. So that would be that was
- 36:36Speaker 5: the dream that I was like, Oh my goodness, Okay.
- 36:38Speaker 1: I like that you put it as an aha moment
- 36:40Speaker 1: because I think that's I think that's a good way
- 36:42Speaker 1: to put it, because you might not recognize that you
- 36:45Speaker 1: have achieved your dream in the moment.
- 36:47Speaker 2: I didn't, but yeah you look back and you're like.
- 36:48Speaker 5: Because I thought I could play at collegiate basketball, that
- 36:52Speaker 5: was the goal old college ball. But I'm like, I'm
- 36:54Speaker 5: five foot four, I'm gonna have to be averaging like
- 36:57Speaker 5: Isaiah Thomas Numbers or just be a really good point guard.
- 37:02Speaker 6: That was kind of it. And Donald Watts trained me.
- 37:05Speaker 5: He helped me, but also took what he trained me
- 37:08Speaker 5: and put that towards track and field, and it actually
- 37:10Speaker 5: worked out well. So that was kind of like, like
- 37:12Speaker 5: I said, the aha moment, like Okay, yeah, I could
- 37:15Speaker 5: work really hard to try to do basketball, but man
- 37:17Speaker 5: track and field, there is no limit. Like if I
- 37:20Speaker 5: continue to get stronger and stronger, I can easily easily
- 37:24Speaker 5: see myself getting better and faster, and potentially I don't
- 37:28Speaker 5: know what I could have done because I end up
- 37:29Speaker 5: getting hurt. But there was definitely like okay, yeah, going
- 37:33Speaker 5: to state and all these events, Yeah, I'm already I'm
- 37:37Speaker 5: already top fifteen in the state. Let's go train with somebody,
- 37:40Speaker 5: get really focus and lock in and see where you
- 37:44Speaker 5: match up.
- 37:45Speaker 6: Going to your senior season.
- 37:46Speaker 5: And someone just texted and what was one hundred time
- 37:48Speaker 5: I clocked in hand time ten to nine, So eleven
- 37:52Speaker 5: point one four I think would be the wow.
- 37:55Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 37:55Speaker 5: So if I didn't get hurt, who knows what would
- 37:58Speaker 5: have happened. But I was definitely on my way.
- 38:00Speaker 6: Yep. Yeah.
- 38:00Speaker 5: During my senior season, it was like I'm glad I
- 38:03Speaker 5: made that choice because I could have easily been like, hey,
- 38:04Speaker 5: I'll keep playing basketball and keep trying.
- 38:06Speaker 2: Because that's what you knew, That's what I knew.
- 38:08Speaker 6: But I've also did a little track here and there.
- 38:11Speaker 5: When I was in like fifth grade, I won the
- 38:14Speaker 5: high jump for my like all the eighth graders, and
- 38:16Speaker 5: I didn't care.
- 38:17Speaker 6: I was like, oh, I want to hoop.
- 38:18Speaker 5: Yeah. I just happened to be athletic enough to do
- 38:20Speaker 5: the high jump and I had someone that coached me,
- 38:22Speaker 5: and I was like, wow, I was actually pretty good
- 38:24Speaker 5: back then too. I just didn't even know it. So
- 38:26Speaker 5: it took maturity and realizing that you know, they're not.
- 38:29Speaker 5: Everything is for you, but when you find the thing
- 38:31Speaker 5: that is, give it, you're one hundred percent. And it
- 38:34Speaker 5: turned out really well.
- 38:35Speaker 2: No, that's awesome. I like that.
- 38:36Speaker 1: And yeah, I really like that aha moment because I
- 38:38Speaker 1: think we've all had that too, and especially for most
- 38:40Speaker 1: of us who haven't made it right in some professional
- 38:44Speaker 1: to some professional level, you had that moment that you
- 38:46Speaker 1: can look back at least now and say, oh, that
- 38:48Speaker 1: was it.
- 38:49Speaker 6: Yep.
- 38:49Speaker 2: I just maybe didn't recognize it at it.
- 38:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 38:51Speaker 6: Like I said, in fifth grade, I was doing it.
- 38:54Speaker 6: I just did. I'm trying to hoop, man.
- 38:55Speaker 2: This is yeah, I'm just doings on the other things.
- 38:57Speaker 5: My mom's like, you need to do multiple sports whatever.
- 39:00Speaker 5: Put me in it. Then I'll do it. So I
- 39:01Speaker 5: did it, and then full circle senior year, I'm like,
- 39:05Speaker 5: oh my goodness, I am on my way to State
- 39:08Speaker 5: that's a possibility.
- 39:09Speaker 6: So yeah, that's so cool.
- 39:10Speaker 1: Well, we've got a lot of people who we have
- 39:11Speaker 1: clearly triggered something.
- 39:13Speaker 2: In their brains remembering their sports moments.
- 39:15Speaker 1: We are going to get to all of those texts
- 39:17Speaker 1: at eleven thirty, but first we have got to take
- 39:21Speaker 1: a little bit of time to chat with Angie Minink
- 39:22Speaker 1: about this Mariner's team and what she saw last night.
- 39:25Speaker 1: She is coming up to join us next Sports Radio
- 39:27Speaker 1: ninety three three KJRFM
