- Kiki George: What happens when your plan to have your way don't pan out? Do you deal with defeat or plan deadly consequences? This is the Minor Mischief Podcast, and this is the bandwidth and bloodshed of Kevon Watkins. Welcome back. Welcome back. Welcome back. Welcome back. did y'all hear how I ruined that last note? Oof. That is why I'm less than a medium-range singer, okay? I sure hope everyone has had an amazing week. Fall is here. Fall is officially here. It is October in the year of 2025. And with it being October is the arrival of spooky season. I personally hate spooky season myself, but it is a perfect time to subscribe to a new true crime podcast. Such as the Minor Mischief Podcast, perhaps. I hate spooky season because I love fall. I love fall. I love pumpkins. I love pumpkin spice. I love fall food. I love soup. I love chili. butternut squash soup is quickly coming up the ranks as one of I'm not gonna say one of my favorite things to eat because I'm a chicken wing girl down, okay? But I do love fall food. I love fall sports. I was born in the fall. Okay. I love fall, but I hate, hate, hate spooky season. The reason being for me is because my birthday is in October and it is so hard to find anything that is not Halloween related to do on an October birthday. For instance, last year me and my friends went laser tag and it was haunted laser tag. And I did not realize it until the last minute. And so we're in the laser tag arena and I'm being chased by clowns and ghost face. Chow. Mm mm. I almost took that man out of here, and he was really just doing his job. But once again, fall is beautiful, and it is a great time to subscribe to a new true crime podcast such as this one. And I thank you in advance. So let's jump right on in. Today's story I actually found on a Facebook post, but when I read it, I was like, honey. We need to talk about this one. This week's story centers around Kevon Watkins, who is our mischief maker, and Alexis Watkins, who unfortunately is our victim. Kevon Lamar Watkins was born in 2001 to his parents, Kenneth and Latoya Watkins. I'm not sure where he falls in their group of siblings, but I do know that he has three brothers and two sisters, including Miss Alexis. Alexis Brianna Watkins was born in 1997 to Kenneth and Latoya Watkins. She was described as a beautiful person with a loving spirit and a beautiful smile. She had a zest for life and openly showed love for others. I'm gonna go on a quick side mission here and say, I read a post recently, and it was like all dateline intros start with: she had a zest for life. She had a smile that lit up a room. She grabbed life by the horns. If I ever hear anyone describe me using those three things, I'm swinging. Leave me be. Say I was a horrible person, okay? And this is not to make light of the situation because this is actually a very heavy story. But don't say I had a zest for life. I promise you. Please don't. anyway, we're back on track now. At the time of the story, she was in a loving and committed relationship with her high school boyfriend, turned fiance. Whose name appeared to be Andre, or at least that is what he was listed as on social media. The two had a son together named Cameron with a K. I love K names, by the by. All my kids have K names. Most of my siblings have K names. I was able to find Miss Alexis's Facebook page. And let me tell you, honey, she was obsessed with her baby boy. She posted about him regularly, about milestones in his life, Christmas pictures. How cute and adorable he is, and just about plans that they have for the future. Alexis, was also said to have a close relationship with her own mother, Miss Latoya. Just looking at her videos, looking at her page, you know, while I was looking up things for this podcast, she did appear to be just a very fun loving spirit. She was just doing goofy stuff, dancing, loving on her friends, loving on her family. she appeared to be a pretty amazing human being. So let's go back to February second, two thousand eighteen. We are in Macon, Georgia, which I'm pretty sure is in the middle of the state. I just know that I used to ride through Macon when my sister lived in Gwinnett County and I lived in Florida and I would drive up and through Macon to see her. And when I say through Macon, I really just mean on the interstate because I had my regular travel station that I stopped at for gas. And outside of that, I don't want to stop anywhere in places in Georgia. I do not know. No shade to those of you that live there. I have my one gas station that I go to, and that is it. You won't catch me just venturing through Georgia grabbing life by the horns. No, ma'am. It's just not gonna happen. I have spent very little time in making, if at all, but I read while I was doing some research for this podcast. That Macon apparently is known for its southern charm, historical architecture, and very vibrant cultural scene. I would like to know more about this. How vibrant is it? How vibrant is it? If anyone has visited Macon or perhaps lives there, please let me know what it's like. Is it somewhere you would recommend, somewhere you'd vacation? Like I mentioned previously, I do not visit random places in Georgia. I don't. Not since the time I ended up getting gas at a a renovated plantation. I was like, yeah. Mm-mm. I that's why I go to my regular travel center to get gas whenever I'm driving through Georgia. That is it and that is all. So it's February second, twenty eighteen, and it is a Friday. LaToya picked Kevon up from school, if you can remember, Latoya's their mom. And she said that he was already in a pretty foul mood. They pulled up to their house on Westmount Road and Kevon went into his room so he could play on his Xbox. He was probably ready to veg on his game the whole weekend and forget about the annoyances of his day, which this tracks so hard because I have a 15 year old and I literally call him the troll that lives by the stairs. He is not allowed to use his PC during the week, but on weekends he's like, My time has come. And we don't see him after that. He comes home, he jumps right on his PC. He comes out for food, maybe to shower. If we're playing Uno or Monopoly, he'll come out. Outside of that, he is in his room playing his game, talking to his friends online and on the phone. So Kavana's in his room. He's playing his Xbox and he notices that the Wi Fi is lagging. He's annoyed because what do you mean this freaking internet is moving slow right now? Like I've been waiting all week for this moment. I would like to play my game. Why is this internet lagging? Why are these people on the Wi-Fi? I'm just not. So Kevin decides that he is going to change the Wi-Fi password so no one else can use the internet and the internet speed for his game would be good. Which the audacity of you to be unemployed and changing the Wi-Fi password because your game isn't working is crazy. But that's neither here nor there. So Alexis is annoyed because number one. Kevin just changed the Wi-Fi password, inconveniencing everyone in the house. But according to LaToya, Kevin had a very nasty attitude when he came home and he was just being rude and just a jerk of a teenage boy that day. So LaToya is like, Okay, I'm not putting up with your attitude. You changed the Wi-Fi password. Who do you think you are? I'm going to unplug the Wi-Fi and let's see how you like it now. So Latoya unplugs the Wi-Fi. She takes the router and the Xbox console into her room. And at this point, Kavon is be on pissed. He is pissed. He is walking behind his mother, like, why would you take the Xbox out of my room? Why would you move the Wi-Fi? Like, come on, man. I just want to play the game. I'm just trying to play the game and you're trying to ruin my life. That's not a direct quote. That's just how it went in my head. So Kevin is arguing with his mother. Latoya is arguing back with Kevin. I'm sure she has her finger in his face. I'm sure he is coming up to her like, Woman, I just want to play my game. Give me my stuff back. And Alexis is like, You don't talk to our mom like that. Are you crazy? So they are arguing and they are loud. And Alexis walks into the room and it looks like Kevin is about to hit Latoya. Like he's about to put his hands on their mom. And she's like, in no freaking world. Do you get to put your hands on our mother? Like it's just not gonna happen. So Alexis steps in between them because she's defending Latoya, like, bro, get out of her face. You're doing the absolute most right now. And I would hate to have to put my hands on you because you're not about to hit our mom. So Kavana is still coming towards his mother, and Alexis grabbed him and put him up in a bear hug. Which let me tell y'all something. Older sibling strength is unmatched. Cause Alexis is she was a tiny thing. Just based on her picture, she looked like maybe she was 120 pounds soaking well. Like she was a very tiny thing. And I'm just like, fifteen year old boy is like, I mean, I can't compare everyone to my fifteen year old boy because he is overgrown. I'm five eleven, so imagine. but I guess to be fair, at the time Kevin is five seven and a hundred and thirty seven pounds. So maybe she was able to just scoop him up real quick, you know? But Alexis has him in a bear hug and she is telling him to chill, like chill out, stop, go take a deep breath. Like you cannot put your hands on mom. So Kevon wiggles out of the bear hug, and he and Alexis are tussling on the floor. Like they are in my head. You know when you used to watch like the old school cartoons where they're fighting and then one person's on top of the other one, and then they flip over and the other person. That's the visual I had in my head, but they are tussling on the floor because Alexis is not letting up, and Kevon damn sure is not letting up because he was already pissed when he walked out of school that day. So Kevon wiggles out of the bear hug. They're tussling on the floor, and he places Alexis in a chokehold. Their 13-year-old brother, who is listed as KW in the case file, so that's how we'll address him. KW comes in and he is swinging at Kevon. He's like, please, like, get off of her, get off of her, get off of her, get off of her, get off of her. He's swinging at him. Latoya's trying to pull him off. This is all ineffective. Like he has the hulk hulk strength at this point. And they cannot get him to. let go of the grip that he has on Alexis's neck. So LaToya's hitting him, KW's hitting him, and she gets to the point where she's like, Okay, nothing is working. I need to call 911. So it's about 517 PM. LaToya is on the phone with 911 and she's just like, I need you guys to intervene. My kids are fighting. She calls and tells the police that Kavon was being disorderly and disobedient and she asks for assistance. A few minutes later, unbeknownst to LaToya KW calls and he tells the 911 dispatcher that Kavon had Alexis in a chokehold and that she was knocked out. She was not moving. He said that Kavon was quote unquote crazy. He was threatening to beat their mother and that their mother was trying to get him off of their sister, but he was still on her. Deputy Isaac Munguia. So sorry if I pronounced that wrong. That's just what it looks like to me. But Deputy Isaac Mungia got to their house about 5 30 p.m. And met LaToy at the door. Which I'm gonna say, if she called him at 5.17 and they're with their at 5:30, the response time was on point, honey. Okay. So she pointed Deputy Isaac to the room in the back of the house, and she's just like, they're still back there fighting. He gets to the back room, he finds Kevon on top of Alexis, where he appeared to be pinning her down. He shouts to Kevin. He's like, Hey, get off her. Get off her right now. And Kavon is not hearing none of that. He is still on top of her. So Deputy Isaac shouts at him again, like, let her go. And I guess the authority in his voice, Kevon finally, finally lets his sister go. And she just flops to the floor. Deputy Isaac walks over to Alexis and he said that when he walked over to her, her tongue was hanging out of her mouth, and it appeared that she had urinated on herself. He immediately begins performing CPR and calls for backup. When EMS arrived, they transported Alexis to Navisant Medical Center. At that point, Kevin was read his Miranda rights and taken into custody. While in custody, Kevon agreed to cooperate with the investigators and he was questioned by investigator Marcus Baker. According to Kevon, he and his mother did get into a fight about the Wi-Fi password. He said that his mother got in his face and he pushed her away saying, I don't want to hit you. Which What? Excuse me? Hitting your mother should never ever ever never never ever never never never ever cross your mind. I don't care. Walk away, put your hands in the air, sit on them. You do not hit your mother. Especially like I get it. Some people have some really horrible mothers. I I I get that. But from what I read just in the case notes, LaToya was she was your average mom. Like, was she perfect? Probably not. Were there areas that she probably could have improved in? Absolutely. But she took care of her kids and, you know, she raised them in a fairly loving household. And I feel like for that, you know, be grateful. Because it be Could be so much worse. You could be out on the street, right? You can have a mother that doesn't care about your well-being, that didn't come to pick you up from school that day, that didn't buy you an Xbox, that didn't have proper Wi-Fi, that didn't have a meal on the, you know, table for you. So you should not be thinking about hitting your mother. Period. Point blank. But Kevon said Alexis came into the room and hit him, and then he admitted to placing her in the chokehold. He admitted to restraining her even after he's she stopped moving because he was quote unquote mad. He stated that he did all of this to protect himself because he was concerned that Alexis would get up from the chokehold and start hitting him again. And I'm not gonna lie, I don't agree with anyone putting their hands on another person. But if my little brother, which I don't have one, but if I did, if my little brother put his hands on me, you would probably have to peel me off of him. You would have to peel me off of him. Because what do you mean you hit me? Are you nuts? First of all, I'm a female. Second of all, are you nuts? But I digress. Kevon at this time was taken to the Macon Regional Youth Detention Center and charged with aggravated assault. Back at the hospital, Alexis had been resuscitated by the emergency team and placed on the intensive care unit for anoxic brain injury. Which, if you're unfamiliar with the term, Anoxic brain injury is brain damage due to lack of oxygen to the brain. She was also given a secondary diagnosis of cardiorespiratory failure. Through the night, Alexis went into cardiac arrest and she died around 3 a.m. the next morning. So remember, Kavon was initially charged with aggravated assault, and upon Alexis passing, his charges were increased to felony murder. The medical examiner determined Alexa's cause of death to be caused by anoxic brain injury. The ME also noted that she had multiple abrasions on her neck, a friction type injury, and an abrasion of her wait for it, because this is a very long word. Sternocladomastoid. Sternocladomastoid muscle. For my medical students and my medical professionals out there. If I butchered that, I'm so sorry. Sternoclidomastoid muscle, as well as a result to the pressure applied on her neck. Alexa's funeral was held on Saturday, February 18th, 2018, at Union Baptist Church in Macon, Georgia, and she was laid to rest at Cherry Blossom Cemetery. Her online obituary was filled with people paying their respects and offering condolences to their family. One person posted, quote, Your beautiful smile is gone, but the memories will forever linger on. My heart is so full of grief and pain. It's just hard to explain. I will continue to pray that God strengthen your loved ones day to day. This was truly a hard pill to swallow. The damage left behind, and so much sorrow. Rest easy, baby girl. Kevon decided to forego a trial by jury and opted for a bench trial. In August 2019, Kevon sat in front of Judge Verda Colvin to plead his case. Kevon was represented by a public defender by the name of Tamika Flucher. Before the trial, attorney Flucher asked LaToya if she had any questions, and LaToya was just besides herself. I could not imagine the pain that she was in because it's like you lost one child, and that is painful by itself. But to lose one child at the hands of another child and for them both to be so young, she was completely besides herself. And when she was asked by attorney Fluker if she had any questions, she said, Why is my son being charged with felony murder? I'm sorry. Why is your son being charged with felony murder because he murdered his sister? This is why I'm not cut out for this type of work, but you know. So the trial consisted of the testimony of Latoya Watkins, the ME, and then Kevon testified in his own defense. Kevon stated that he didn't really recall Alexis falling unconscious, which was a little different from the initial story that he gave to the investigators. He also admitted during cross-examination that it was entirely possible that Alexis was only hitting him because she could not breathe. After hearing both sides of the story, Judge Colvin found Kevon guilty on the charge of felony murder. She sentenced Kevon to life in prison without the possibility of the parole. Judge Colvin acknowledged that while Kevon had Alexis in a chokehold, she must have stopped moving b but because he was so angry, his mind could not reason with the need to stop. He could not reason with the need to let her go. He could not reason with the need that. His sister was in trouble. He could not reason with the need of her needing heir because he was angry. And according to Judge Colvin, his anger trumped everything else. And that's very unfortunate. She also stated that the adults in Kevon's life failed him by not instilling discipline or teaching him how to manage his anger. She said, quote, in this household, disorder was allowed to flourish. In this household, the ability to ignore and follow corrective discipline was empowered. She also mentioned that Kavon's case was an example of what excessive gaming can do to a person. She said Kavon's addiction was to his game, and his disregard for his family led to this horrible tragedy. I actually found out about this case, like I mentioned earlier in a Facebook post. And a lot of people on that post shared the same sentiments that. This had to be way deeper than a Wi-Fi password, and that Kevon probably showed signs of needing intervention far before this ever happened. Someone posted, quote, I just can't get over the fact that he killed his own sister over a Wi-Fi password. Moreover, for him to choke her out like that. The fact that he killed his own sister, that's more than anger. That's resentment, bitterness, indignation, irritation, disgruntlement, discontent, acrimony, animosity, hostility, jaundice, antipathy. Antipathy, enmity, and just flat out hatred. If it wasn't his sister, it would have been his mom. End quote. And despite not knowing what half of those words meant, I think they may have a point. This had to have been more about more than the Wi Fi password. And I'm not making excuses or supporting him in any way, but this had to have been a build up. After the verdict was read, Kevon cried and he only mouthed, I'm sorry. District Attorney David Cook expressed hope that justice would bring some semblance of closure to Alexis' loved ones, but no sentence could fully heal the wounds left behind by such a devastating loss. Judge Colvin admitted that this was, quote, the most difficult thing I've ever had to do since I took the bench in April of 2014, end quote. Kevon is currently serving his sentence at the Calhoun State Prison in Morgan, Georgia. He filed an appeal in April of twenty twenty two stating that he could have been charged and should have been charged with voluntary manslaughter instead of felony murder because Latoya testified that Alexis hit Kevon first and that he continued holding her down to protect himself. Now Kevon. His appeal was rightfully denied, stating that this court has consistently held that evidence of the defendant's anger and frustration caused by an antagonistic relationship with the victim, even to the extent the relationship involved physical confrontations is generally not sufficient to show even the slight evidence necessary to require a jury change on voluntary manslaughter. So basically, what that means is as the case went on and as he's filing appeals and as things are continuing to get uncovered about their family dynamic, it was said that this is not the first time him and LaToya got into a physical fight. It's not the first time LaToya put her her hands on him, and it's not the first time that he put his hands on LaToya. This was a constant, ongoing thing. And apparently this is what they did. Like they got into it regularly about various things. I can't say that in that particular research that it said that Kevin was the aggressor versus him not being the aggressor. It didn't mention who was at fault, but it just kind of went on to say that this was regular for them. This was a regular occurrence and Kevon and Alexis' fighting was just like a regular Friday. And I hate that for them. I mean, siblings fight, don't get me wrong, but to the point of hostility, to the point of always like putting your hands on each other, I just I don't agree with that. And it just I I truly do side with the commenters on Facebook because I feel like there should have been an intervention far before this happened. And What I didn't agree with though, I she was correct. I wanna say that, prefacing. Judge Colvern was correct. Everyone is to blame. Everyone in the house is to blame for what happened. It has nothing to do. I mean, it has everything to do with Kavan his anger. But when you're raising a child, it is your responsibility to mitigate that. It is your responsibility to assess their needs. It is your responsibility to get them the help. Now, whether or not they take the help, that goes on to be said because we all have our own personalities. But it is our job as parents to really try to set our kids up for success. and I don't think that was done in this particular situation. Kevon was pretty much allowed to do what he wants to do. He was allowed to be angry. He was allowed to put his hands on his sister. Let me tell you something right here, right now. If my son puts his hands on his sisters, he can pretty much sleep outside. And I know that's harsh, but I refuse to work hard and pay the bills in this house to be afraid of someone that lives here. Not if I can help it. So I'm sorry. But what I didn't agree with is I did not necessarily agree with Judge Colvern saying the things that she said. She was correct, but I feel like at this point it's just rubbing salt on her wounds. She's already lost Alexis. Alexis is not coming back. And I hate to say that, but it is also the truth. She has also lost Kevon. He's not coming back. He's not getting out. He is not going to see outside of prison walls for the rest of his natural born life. And I think that's punishment enough. It's more than punishment enough. So I just didn't agree with like kind of laying into LaToya. I just didn't feel that was fair. However, Judge Colvern was right about what she said. Where's the family now? I'm not exactly sure who Cam is ring being raised by, but I did find some of his school pictures on Andre's page. he is the absolute cutest. He's growing well. and he seems to be a fairly happy kid. All things considering. I tried to see how Latoya's doing, but her name was fairly common and I was not able to kind of pin down her Facebook page or an Instagram page and I just truly got lazy scrolling Andre's page because he posts like five times a day and I just I was like, I'm not I it's just too much. Which brings me to my final thoughts. this was truly a tragedy. I do believe that Kevlon showed signs Of having this type of anger and aggression. And I think it's very important to not deny those signs. I'm gonna give you guys a quick little story. but there was someone I once knew who dealt with really, really, really horrible anger issues. Like he would black out. And it did not matter who was there, who was around, who it didn't matter. And I felt like for me, I was just like, Telling people around, like, this is not normal. Now, granted, I put up with it a lot more than I should have, but towards the end, I just remember like screaming for help, like, something is wrong. Like, this behavior is not normal. You should not be doing these things. You should not be grabbing people like that. I should not, I should feel safe around you. I shouldn't be afraid of what you would do or, you know, how you would do things. You should honor your parents. And and I get it. I get it. We don't all have great parents, but this particular person had fairly decent parents. And because of that unchecked anger, because of that unchecked aggression, I always said like I don't put anything past this person and nobody believed me but maybe one or two people. And now that person is in jail, facing a life sentence for doing the unimaginable. And so I feel like it's just one of those things where it's like, Don't ignore the signs. If he'll hit you once, he'll hit you again. If he'll get in your face once, he'll get in your face again. If he will put his hands on his sister once, he'll do it again. And I just feel like there had to have been opportunities for anger management or therapy. Why was he so angry? I do believe that we're all born with different scales on the crash out meter. Me, I probably crash out a whole lot sooner than other people. But there is someone out there, I'm sure, that crashes out a whole lot more than me. And I feel like you just have to assess, like, What are his behaviors? What is he into? What I'm sure he probably got in fights in school. You know, he probably if if you're willing to put your hands on your sister, I'm sure you'd you're perfectly fine putting your hands on a stranger. I just feel like it was a buildup and it just unfortunately sucks that nothing was done to deal with it prior. And now Alexis is gone and her son does not get the opportunity to grow with his mother. LaToya doesn't get the opportunity to have her daughter there as she's aging and as she's getting older. And it is just a horrible situation. But I said all that to say know the signs. If someone is expressing uncontrollable anger. And you have the ability to, you should get them help. If you are dating someone that expresses uncontrollable anger, call the police when they do. File those police reports. They will be your best friend in the future. And get away. Get away. Leave. I do feel like it's a little harder when it's your child because you love your children. Well, a lot of people love their children unconditionally, but unconditional love also has moments where you have to have tough love and where you just really have to call a spade a spade and say that what you're doing is not normal. I am interested to know what the what their home dynamic was like because I have the belief, and I could be wrong, but I do have the belief that these types of things are triggered. You know, did his parents argue a lot? I'm not saying that they did. I'm just speculating. Did they argue a lot? Did his siblings argue a lot? Were they just left to do whatever they wanted to do? Were their fights just unchecked? Were they uncontrolled? Like I just feel like this was not the first time the evidence showed that this was not the first time, but it unfortunately was the last time and not the way that it should have been. And It just it I hate that this happened to Alexis. I hate that this happened to her son. I hate that this happened to KW. He was 13. This he was there trying to get him off of her. This is going to affect him for the rest of his life. And for LaToya, it just like I said, she's already suffered the ultimate punishment. I don't feel like it's fair to go beating up on her, like, my gosh, you couldn't control your son. That's not fair. She's already been through enough, but I do, you know, pray for her sanity. I pray for her safety. I pray that, you know, nothing is ever gonna make this better. But I do pray that she's doing well. Like I said, I couldn't find her, but to be fair, I didn't search that hard. So that is the end of today's show. That is the end of today's show. Look at me. I came out with another show. I'm doing it. I'm doing it. I'm doing it.
