- 1:26Speaker 4: how are you feeling about it?
- 1:27Speaker 2: Make it's cool? Man, it's a little different.
- 1:30Speaker 3: You know, done a few of these in the past,
- 1:32Speaker 3: so if something new, just have to stay focused and
- 1:37Speaker 3: make sure we brought a great product for.
- 1:39Speaker 2: The listeners out there. That's always a key thing.
- 1:41Speaker 3: You know, we always get better, but just as a whole,
- 1:44Speaker 3: just trying to always be better, one show at a time.
- 1:47Speaker 4: Right, And apart from that, we have today also news
- 1:51Speaker 4: about our production schedule, so we're actually going to be
- 1:53Speaker 4: dropping every other Thursday. So when this airs, it's November
- 1:57Speaker 4: twenty first. If you're listening to this when it airs,
- 2:00Speaker 4: next episode after that is going to be December fifth,
- 2:03Speaker 4: so and so on, so please, you know, keep your
- 2:06Speaker 4: ears out, keep right out. And another thing, we're debuting
- 2:09Speaker 4: the format of the show today because we've got some
- 2:11Speaker 4: recurring segments coming out that you can look forward to.
- 2:14Speaker 4: So I'm really stoked to get into all of that.
- 2:16Speaker 4: But let's how about you get to the news first. Sure,
- 2:20Speaker 4: let's talk about the the Elephant in the Room, the
- 2:23Speaker 4: event from last Friday, the poll Tyson, what would you
- 2:26Speaker 4: call it?
- 2:27Speaker 2: Travesty? Yeah?
- 2:28Speaker 3: Man, Well, first of my thing is this, what did
- 2:31Speaker 3: people really expect? Like, that's my biggest thing. What was
- 2:34Speaker 3: the expectations of people.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Knowing?
- 2:38Speaker 3: I mean, here's the thing. Anyone after in their fifties
- 2:41Speaker 3: and still fighting, you can't have a great expectation, you know,
- 2:44Speaker 3: just like there's just not a whole lot there. But
- 2:47Speaker 3: to expect a fifty eight year old man to do
- 2:51Speaker 3: anything of significance was not really smart, right, that wasn't there.
- 2:56Speaker 3: But the build up was great, the marketing was great.
- 2:59Speaker 2: We just know that.
- 3:00Speaker 3: But you know, it wasn't a whole lot there, unfortunately.
- 3:03Speaker 3: And with Jake Paul, you know, it's another marketing gim
- 3:06Speaker 3: on his end made a lot of money. The brand
- 3:08Speaker 3: is big, so I can't fault him for what he did.
- 3:11Speaker 3: But this was not a fight. This was a marketing situation,
- 3:14Speaker 3: This was a business venture. This was not a boxing match.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:17Speaker 4: I think that people would I know what they wanted.
- 3:20Speaker 4: They wanted to see Mike knock this guy the hell out,
- 3:23Speaker 4: but we all knew it wasn't gonna happen.
- 3:24Speaker 2: So I call it schmuck bait.
- 3:26Speaker 4: If you tuned in and you really wanted to see that,
- 3:30Speaker 4: I'm sorry, you're a bit of a schmuck because that
- 3:32Speaker 4: was never going to happen.
- 3:33Speaker 2: And I knew that.
- 3:34Speaker 4: I said in the last episode they were going to
- 3:35Speaker 4: give Jake Paul w just to build up his brand,
- 3:38Speaker 4: his career, et cetera. So I hope we all remember
- 3:42Speaker 4: this next time there's one of these exhibitions, but I will.
- 3:47Speaker 2: I'm not going to.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Change anything I said in the last episode.
- 3:49Speaker 2: But I did.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Realize I think I we probably should have had a
- 3:54Speaker 4: longer conversation, or any conversation rather about the Katie Taylor
- 3:57Speaker 4: versus Amanda Serrano fight. Catch half of that. It was awesome.
- 4:03Speaker 4: It was a real fight. That was our issue with
- 4:05Speaker 4: this exhibition. It wasn't real boxing, but these ladies they
- 4:07Speaker 4: put on a real match and it was great. So
- 4:09Speaker 4: did you catch any of it?
- 4:10Speaker 2: Yes?
- 4:11Speaker 3: I caught bits and pieces. It's like I caught bits
- 4:13Speaker 3: and pieces of the next one after that. That was
- 4:16Speaker 3: an actual fight. Though the exhibition was exactly what that was.
- 4:20Speaker 3: That was exhibition. This was an actual fight. So it
- 4:23Speaker 3: was good to see an actual fight happen. Strategy, you know,
- 4:27Speaker 3: an actual real battle. Because that wasn't really marketed. Honestly,
- 4:32Speaker 3: the under cart wasn't talked about at all. It was
- 4:35Speaker 3: always just the two main guys. So it was actually
- 4:37Speaker 3: afresh to see an actual good fight sometime throughout the
- 4:41Speaker 3: night because the main event was really disappointing, and people
- 4:45Speaker 3: feel suckered. And the one thing you never want and
- 4:47Speaker 3: anything is to feel suckered. You don't want that. That's
- 4:50Speaker 3: something definitely never wanted to feel suckered, and I feel
- 4:54Speaker 3: the people feel cheated.
- 4:55Speaker 2: But the fight before the main event was really good.
- 4:58Speaker 4: Right, And in the future, if you we think something
- 5:01Speaker 4: is dumb or we're gonna hate on it, then that's fine.
- 5:02Speaker 4: We'll say that, but we should probably look into something
- 5:05Speaker 4: that we can recommend it not just be I think
- 5:07Speaker 4: the disdain of this whole event kind of took over,
- 5:10Speaker 4: which is fair honestly. Like I said, I'm not taking
- 5:11Speaker 4: anything back. But the reason I wasn't gonna watch any
- 5:16Speaker 4: of it because last Friday there was a band called
- 5:18Speaker 4: Cold War Kids playing in town, indie rock band from
- 5:21Speaker 4: Long Beach. He has a good show. I was with
- 5:23Speaker 4: my people. Shout out to Adam, Jimmy and Sam. In
- 5:26Speaker 4: between when the opening band got off the stage.
- 5:29Speaker 2: And we were waiting for the main band. My buddy Adam.
- 5:31Speaker 4: Pulled out his cell phone and put Netflix on it,
- 5:34Speaker 4: so we ended up popping into the SURROUNDO Taylor fight
- 5:38Speaker 4: like round five or six. I'm not exactly sure which
- 5:40Speaker 4: one of those two, but we watched the end.
- 5:42Speaker 2: And it was great. I love women's boxing.
- 5:44Speaker 4: For those of you who don't know women's boxing, is
- 5:47Speaker 4: it timed a little bit differently. They actually go for
- 5:50Speaker 4: two minute rounds as opposed to three for the men.
- 5:53Speaker 4: Men can fight up to twelve rounds total, women are
- 5:57Speaker 4: maxed out at ten, So I think that makes those
- 6:01Speaker 4: fights a little bit more exciting because these ladies don't
- 6:03Speaker 4: have time to dilly deli, you know, kind of waste
- 6:06Speaker 4: any time, so they get to it. It's a battle.
- 6:08Speaker 4: They go to full on war. I think if you're
- 6:11Speaker 4: one of those viewers who doesn't like the more technical
- 6:14Speaker 4: aspects of boxing and you want to see an all
- 6:16Speaker 4: overall ladies boxing might be for you, to be quite honest.
- 6:18Speaker 3: With you, absolutely absolutely. Like you mentioned two minutes, you
- 6:21Speaker 3: really don't have time to really outpoint someone like that.
- 6:24Speaker 3: You don't have time to sit around. You got to attack,
- 6:27Speaker 3: you know, you have to really put your plan in motion.
- 6:29Speaker 3: So very good point there. But also we need to
- 6:32Speaker 3: see more women's fights get top billing, we need to
- 6:35Speaker 3: see them cover better. We don't get any marketing for them,
- 6:38Speaker 3: so the average person doesn't know, and that's something that
- 6:41Speaker 3: needs to change going forward, because there is a market there.
- 6:44Speaker 3: People like seeing fighting, people like watching people go out of it,
- 6:48Speaker 3: whether it's men or women. So I just think that
- 6:51Speaker 3: the powers that be got to change why they market
- 6:53Speaker 3: because some of these fights that they do market well
- 6:55Speaker 3: are are snoozers. And I think we need to kind
- 6:58Speaker 3: of change things up the way we do things well.
- 7:01Speaker 4: And I think part of that, according to some fighters,
- 7:04Speaker 4: some female fighters, the fact that they don't get to
- 7:07Speaker 4: fight as long as the men in terms of rounds,
- 7:10Speaker 4: the three minutes, in the twelve rounds, some of them
- 7:13Speaker 4: are saying they're not actually getting well one is paid
- 7:16Speaker 4: as well, and they're not getting as much hypes. And
- 7:18Speaker 4: I don't necessarily know if that's the case or not,
- 7:21Speaker 4: but all I'll say is that I didn't want to
- 7:23Speaker 4: talk about the controversy right now. The reason that women's
- 7:26Speaker 4: boxing is shorter, it all comes down to full safety,
- 7:30Speaker 4: you know, there's some studies that say that women are
- 7:34Speaker 4: more susceptible to concussions to brain injury. There's conflicting studies
- 7:38Speaker 4: from places like the Orthopedic Journal of Sports Medicine, and
- 7:42Speaker 4: then there's the Brain Injury Association of America. Like, I'm
- 7:45Speaker 4: not a scientist, and I barely graduated college by doing
- 7:48Speaker 4: the bare minimum well hungover a shitting class. So I'm
- 7:50Speaker 4: not going to summarize any of these research, right, That's
- 7:53Speaker 4: that we're here for. But the point is that there's
- 7:55Speaker 4: conflicting right, or conflicting reports, conflicting research. And there's several
- 8:01Speaker 4: women fighters they're saying, Hey, we want to fight for
- 8:03Speaker 4: as long as the men. We know that what the
- 8:05Speaker 4: toll it takes, we know the risk.
- 8:06Speaker 2: We want to do it.
- 8:07Speaker 4: The question is should they Is it a bigger risk?
- 8:11Speaker 4: Is it irresponsible? Will that change the outcomes of the
- 8:16Speaker 4: fights in terms of you know, will they be maybe
- 8:19Speaker 4: less exciting because they have more time to maybe try
- 8:22Speaker 4: to win on points, or maybe they'll have more time
- 8:26Speaker 4: to strategize and set up traps and get more knockouts.
- 8:29Speaker 4: You know, some women say there can be more knockouts
- 8:31Speaker 4: if we do three minutes.
- 8:32Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 8:33Speaker 4: I that's something I kind of want to throw back
- 8:35Speaker 4: and forth with you. I mean, what do you think
- 8:36Speaker 4: about it?
- 8:37Speaker 3: It's a complex it's a complex issue because once you
- 8:40Speaker 3: sign up for boxing, and sign up for boxing, right, like,
- 8:43Speaker 3: that's the thing, whether it's two minutes three minutes, you
- 8:45Speaker 3: sign up for violence. So I don't think the extra
- 8:47Speaker 3: minute is going to matter so much. If you're in
- 8:49Speaker 3: shape and you're there to fight, the time is the time, right.
- 8:52Speaker 3: That shouldn't be It shouldn't be one thing for one
- 8:55Speaker 3: gender or another for another. It should be all the same.
- 8:58Speaker 3: So if you want a box this should be three
- 8:59Speaker 3: minute around. That's what it should be. You know what
- 9:02Speaker 3: you're getting you something into. It's not like you're playing
- 9:04Speaker 3: a different sport. We all know what boxing is, we
- 9:07Speaker 3: know how it works, we know the dangers of it.
- 9:10Speaker 3: With that being said, you should be able to last
- 9:12Speaker 3: three minutes per round if that's what you choose to do.
- 9:15Speaker 3: You know the rest you're taking with the injuries, it
- 9:17Speaker 3: is what is. I don't have a lot of sympathy
- 9:19Speaker 3: for that part, so that's why I come up with that. However,
- 9:24Speaker 3: with that being said, I do think that we need
- 9:28Speaker 3: to we need to be more acceptable of what the
- 9:33Speaker 3: sport is. We're trying to put too many rules and
- 9:36Speaker 3: we're trying to put too many guidelines on things.
- 9:39Speaker 2: I think we should have Let boxing be boxing. We can't.
- 9:43Speaker 3: You can't make football safer. You can't make boxing safe
- 9:47Speaker 3: for the sport is what it is. If you don't
- 9:49Speaker 3: want to play it, If you don't want to box,
- 9:50Speaker 3: then you gotta do something else. But we can't try
- 9:52Speaker 3: to make it. Oh well, there's a chance that they
- 9:55Speaker 3: might get hurt more than the no, no, no no.
- 9:57Speaker 2: If you're boxingly boxing. If you're not, you're not.
- 10:01Speaker 4: I mean, that's actually a really good point. Some activities
- 10:03Speaker 4: just will never be risk free. I think you can
- 10:06Speaker 4: and should do things to mitigate the risks and make
- 10:08Speaker 4: the participants safer. But skydiving, for example, of course, you
- 10:12Speaker 4: can try to make it as safe as possible. You're
- 10:14Speaker 4: still jumping out of a fucking plan.
- 10:15Speaker 2: No matter what. So yeah, I mean, you know, I do.
- 10:19Speaker 4: I think my biggest concern is the lack of information
- 10:23Speaker 4: and the lack of research and maybe even you know,
- 10:25Speaker 4: the shady stuff that went on with the NFL trying
- 10:28Speaker 4: to suppress those stories about you know, CTE that ended
- 10:32Speaker 4: up with Will Smith telling them to tell the truth.
- 10:35Speaker 4: We all know that story from whatever that movie was
- 10:37Speaker 4: called that everybody saw.
- 10:39Speaker 2: But that's my issue.
- 10:41Speaker 4: I mean, if somebody really really knows the deal, what
- 10:44Speaker 4: they're getting into. Bottom line, if we've been want to
- 10:47Speaker 4: fight for three minutes and twelve rounds, I think they should.
- 10:49Speaker 4: They deserve the shot, you know. And it's happened before.
- 10:52Speaker 4: Amanda Serrano who fought on Friday, she actually fought in
- 10:56Speaker 4: twenty twenty three against Danila Ramos.
- 11:00Speaker 2: That fight went twelve rounds, three minutes.
- 11:04Speaker 4: Yeah, Amandasurnos has been a big advocate of letting women
- 11:07Speaker 4: compete in longer rounds, but even that fight was controversial.
- 11:09Speaker 4: So for those of y'all who don't know that much
- 11:12Speaker 4: about boxing, here's a little something to impress your friends.
- 11:16Speaker 4: So in boxing, there's four major sanctioning bodies. They call
- 11:20Speaker 4: them the WBA World Boxing Association, WBC World Boxing Council,
- 11:25Speaker 4: WBO World Boxing Organization, and the IBF International Boxing Federation.
- 11:30Speaker 4: So the reason fighters have different kinds of belts to
- 11:33Speaker 4: look different and have different colors and design is because
- 11:35Speaker 4: each one of those groups has their own belt at
- 11:37Speaker 4: their own weight class right at every weight class. For
- 11:41Speaker 4: Amanda Serrano's fight, only three of those people of those
- 11:44Speaker 4: commissions sanctioned that fight. The WBC refused. The president WBC said,
- 11:51Speaker 4: I'm never going to approve a woman's boxing match at
- 11:54Speaker 4: three minutes and twelve rounds. So yeah, Amanda Serrano voluntarily
- 11:59Speaker 4: gave up the wb SEE belt and said, fuck y'all. Then, like,
- 12:02Speaker 4: if you won't give me the opportunity to fight equally
- 12:04Speaker 4: to the men, that I won't fight for you, which
- 12:07Speaker 4: is an awesome thing I did. She'd an awesome thing
- 12:10Speaker 4: she did, as far as I'm concerned.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Yeah, Plus the governing bodies they have, they make things
- 12:16Speaker 3: way more difficult than they should be. We don't get
- 12:18Speaker 3: a lot of the fights that we should get because
- 12:20Speaker 3: of them and the fees they take out, the things
- 12:22Speaker 3: they do to make fights difficult. That's a whole different
- 12:25Speaker 3: show for another day. But you know, shame on them,
- 12:28Speaker 3: Shame on them, agreed.
- 12:30Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, we've been talking about how the sport
- 12:34Speaker 4: of boxing has probably gotten less exciting, and I think
- 12:37Speaker 4: over time and I think that these.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Guys are part of the reason for that.
- 12:43Speaker 4: However, on the other side, you know, we got to
- 12:45Speaker 4: remember another thing for you for y'all to impress your
- 12:48Speaker 4: friends at their bar. With fights used to go up
- 12:50Speaker 4: to fifteen rounds. You don't know how man police fights
- 12:53Speaker 4: went that long unless he got a knockout, of course.
- 12:55Speaker 4: But now the limited twelve because in nineteen eighty two
- 12:58Speaker 4: Korean boxer died after a fifteen round fight. It was
- 13:02Speaker 4: Kim Daku his name, and so there were study showing
- 13:05Speaker 4: that his brain was more susceptible to injury after the
- 13:07Speaker 4: twelfth round. So that's when everybody said, well, let's cap
- 13:11Speaker 4: it at twelve. So that one is you know we
- 13:15Speaker 4: talked about, Yes, if you're signing up for it, injuries
- 13:17Speaker 4: can happen.
- 13:17Speaker 2: We all know that.
- 13:18Speaker 4: But if you can make something a little bit safer
- 13:21Speaker 4: so people don't drop.
- 13:23Speaker 3: Dead, that's fine. We don't need fifteen round fights. We
- 13:25Speaker 3: don't need fifteen round fights. We're good.
- 13:28Speaker 4: Yeah, back in the day, apparently, I don't know much
- 13:31Speaker 4: about the timeline on this, but they used to be
- 13:34Speaker 4: unlimited until one fighter just gave up or got knocked out.
- 13:37Speaker 2: I've heard of that as well.
- 13:39Speaker 3: Fifteen is the old school way, and we don't need Yeah,
- 13:43Speaker 3: I remember hearing at that.
- 13:44Speaker 2: But we don't need that no more.
- 13:45Speaker 4: We were good but okay, But what if you know,
- 13:49Speaker 4: in a couple of months somebody dies the on the
- 13:52Speaker 4: twelfth round, or a couple of fighters die, and they say, well,
- 13:53Speaker 4: let's bring it back down to ten.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Then and people will say, you know, fifty.
- 13:56Speaker 3: Years from now, we've done twelve for so long now
- 14:00Speaker 3: that it's a proof of concept. So once you got
- 14:03Speaker 3: a concept, you're not going to go against that. So
- 14:05Speaker 3: I think twelve is here to stay. I don't mind
- 14:07Speaker 3: ten round fights. I think the quicker the better, but
- 14:10Speaker 3: I don't mind it. I'm cool with it. But also
- 14:13Speaker 3: there's something about a fighter digging deeper in rounds. So
- 14:17Speaker 3: digging deep in eight, round, eight, nine, ten is way
- 14:19Speaker 3: different than digging deep in ten, eleven, twelve. You know,
- 14:22Speaker 3: those rounds are way way different. So I think keeping
- 14:25Speaker 3: that twelve is best for everything.
- 14:28Speaker 4: When I think maybe with some of these female fighters
- 14:30Speaker 4: are saying it might be true that if they're going
- 14:32Speaker 4: for longer, you got to dig deeper, maybe somebody can't there.
- 14:35Speaker 4: It might be more knockouts, you know.
- 14:37Speaker 3: There could be, there could be, but also a test
- 14:39Speaker 3: your conditioning. I think that we see a lot of
- 14:41Speaker 3: boxes look good in the first six rounds.
- 14:43Speaker 2: A lot of guys are great in the first six
- 14:45Speaker 2: rounds great.
- 14:47Speaker 3: However, with that being said, we see a lot of
- 14:50Speaker 3: guys fading from eight round on round eight nine ten,
- 14:53Speaker 3: They just fading. Are not the same, conditioning is not
- 14:56Speaker 3: the same. They're breathing heavy the whole nine. So it's
- 14:59Speaker 3: one of thing. It's one thing that when you see
- 15:04Speaker 3: a guy like Floyd where the conditioning was never an issue,
- 15:07Speaker 3: and then you see another thing where god like zab
- 15:09Speaker 3: Judah who was never all the way there, it was
- 15:12Speaker 3: always an issue. And you see some fights that literally
- 15:15Speaker 3: get get determined in the last round because one guy
- 15:17Speaker 3: is just totally out of shape. But if you have
- 15:19Speaker 3: a ten round fight, I think you give a lot
- 15:21Speaker 3: of different decisions in the past, then we think you
- 15:23Speaker 3: really want to think about because it's a lot easier
- 15:26Speaker 3: to train for ten and twelve.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Sure, it's a whole lot easier.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Well, And I guess that's kind of what it comes
- 15:31Speaker 4: down to at the end of it, with this conversation
- 15:33Speaker 4: about you know, the length of women's boxing. If some
- 15:36Speaker 4: men who know they're going to fight twelve rounds still
- 15:39Speaker 4: can't keep the conditioning, then then why don't they just
- 15:42Speaker 4: pick a guy who sucks and say, well, you can
- 15:44Speaker 4: only fight for eight, you can only fight for ten.
- 15:45Speaker 4: You're not there, you know what I'm saying. If they're
- 15:47Speaker 4: given the opportunity, why aren't the ladies given the opportunity
- 15:50Speaker 4: as well? I guess it's kind of what it comes down.
- 15:52Speaker 3: To, exactly exactly. But that being said, though, we need
- 15:58Speaker 3: to keep at twelve. I think that's fair. Also, we
- 16:01Speaker 3: got to remember all these fights are business ventures now,
- 16:05Speaker 3: so you can't shorten around. You can't take Tom away
- 16:08Speaker 3: from a fight. There's too much ad money, that's too
- 16:10Speaker 3: much time that you can't do that. So it's gonna
- 16:13Speaker 3: stay at twelve.
- 16:15Speaker 2: That's true. That's also very true. Yeah.
- 16:18Speaker 4: I mean, I think based on you know, the conversation
- 16:21Speaker 4: we had last time, in this time going forward, I
- 16:24Speaker 4: think women's boxing doesn't get it to due. I realized
- 16:27Speaker 4: I'm part of the problem now because I didn't mention
- 16:29Speaker 4: it last episode, and you know, as a as a
- 16:32Speaker 4: sports commentator now, I do want women to get more
- 16:35Speaker 4: name recognition. I'll be honest, I've seen maybe only a
- 16:38Speaker 4: handful of women's boxing. It doesn't get enough advertising. Sometimes
- 16:43Speaker 4: I'll see highlights online and I thought, oh wait, who
- 16:46Speaker 4: they fought last weekend?
- 16:47Speaker 2: Shit?
- 16:48Speaker 4: You know, so the hype is isn't there? The hype
- 16:52Speaker 4: machine didn't do its job for this particular event, which
- 16:56Speaker 4: I think they totally could have. I mean, they had
- 16:59Speaker 4: all the opportunity in the world.
- 17:01Speaker 3: It's tough because right now it's harder to market boxing
- 17:04Speaker 3: because there's only a handful of people that the masses know,
- 17:09Speaker 3: right Like, that's the biggest issue until we get a
- 17:11Speaker 3: lot of lead typing in where the masses no for
- 17:14Speaker 3: whatever reason. We need to get back to that because
- 17:18Speaker 3: the casual fan is more of the goal than anything.
- 17:22Speaker 3: That's the one thing UFC does well is the casual
- 17:25Speaker 3: fan is involved in their sport more than boxing these days,
- 17:29Speaker 3: and that's what we need to get back to. We're
- 17:31Speaker 3: getting too just boxing fans and that's cool, but for
- 17:35Speaker 3: the sport to grow and make sure it continues on
- 17:38Speaker 3: the pace has always been at, you need to get
- 17:40Speaker 3: more casual people involved. That means the marketing got to change.
- 17:43Speaker 3: That means the media has to change. A lot of
- 17:45Speaker 3: things need to change going forward.
- 17:48Speaker 4: Right well, we're trying to do our part. And if
- 17:51Speaker 4: you think boxing is boring, watch a women's boxing match.
- 17:56Speaker 4: You will not be disappointed.
- 17:57Speaker 2: I feel oh got it.
- 17:58Speaker 4: No, see now, I can't remember who these two ladies
- 18:01Speaker 4: were that I saw fight, but it was a Ryan
- 18:04Speaker 4: Garcia fight last year or the year before that I
- 18:06Speaker 4: saw in the movie theater. It was the only fight
- 18:08Speaker 4: I've ever seen the movie theater. I'm sorry that's not
- 18:11Speaker 4: true because I saw Fury Wilder three in the movie theater.
- 18:14Speaker 4: But I went to see it. And that's a really
- 18:16Speaker 4: cool experience. Like you hear those punches in like surround sounds.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that's really cool. That's a really cool experience.
- 18:22Speaker 4: Yeah, it's I think costic twenty bucks I think for
- 18:25Speaker 4: a ticket, which.
- 18:26Speaker 3: Is partly more now, but so out here they do
- 18:29Speaker 3: them in the ballrooms at MGM properties. That's they used
- 18:32Speaker 3: to do in ballrooms, so they would get the big
- 18:33Speaker 3: ballrooms at all the engine of pos they would charge
- 18:36Speaker 3: I think either twenty five or forty, but you get
- 18:39Speaker 3: like three.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Snacks and stuff like that. It was really cool.
- 18:42Speaker 4: Well, you know, I wasn't planning on talking about this,
- 18:43Speaker 4: but there's a question I did have for you, because
- 18:45Speaker 4: since you brought that up. Vegas is one of the
- 18:48Speaker 4: fight capitals of the world. You know, I'm in Tucson.
- 18:51Speaker 4: There's a lot of Mexicans here, so when Canelo fights,
- 18:53Speaker 4: you know there's some excitement going on.
- 18:54Speaker 2: But oh yeah, I really want to.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Know what the vibe is like in Vegas when there's
- 18:58Speaker 4: a huge fight in town, or even not even in
- 19:00Speaker 4: when there's a huge fight going on that you know
- 19:03Speaker 4: is going to be played, Like is every bar playing
- 19:05Speaker 4: it or do people? Is it crazy?
- 19:07Speaker 2: Like what's what's the vibe? Like can tap?
- 19:08Speaker 3: It's changed. So it used to be where all the
- 19:11Speaker 3: bars used to be able to play the fights. So
- 19:14Speaker 3: all the bars used to be able to so back
- 19:16Speaker 3: when three like twenty eleven ish, twenty ten ish, if
- 19:21Speaker 3: it was on HBO, the every sports book we have
- 19:23Speaker 3: it on you can just watch it for the sportsbook
- 19:25Speaker 3: guard any bar in the casino.
- 19:27Speaker 2: But that changed.
- 19:28Speaker 3: That changed right around twenty I want to say, twenty
- 19:31Speaker 3: ten eleven.
- 19:32Speaker 2: I remember when Floyd fought Ricky Hatton, it was free,
- 19:39Speaker 2: and then he fought Shane Moseley it was free, and
- 19:43Speaker 2: then after that they kind of cut it off. But
- 19:46Speaker 2: for big fights, they it's a different vibe.
- 19:49Speaker 3: Man. It starts early in the week when it's a
- 19:50Speaker 3: very big fight. Really, you send it in the air.
- 19:55Speaker 3: If you go to the airport's way more traffic. If you're
- 19:57Speaker 3: on the strip, it's way more traffic to the fight.
- 20:00Speaker 3: It's very dangerous because you normally have Obviously this podcast
- 20:04Speaker 3: is name mixed company, so when you have a black
- 20:08Speaker 3: in a Mexican fighter fighting, it can be dangerous on
- 20:12Speaker 3: the Las Vegas trip, not gonna lighting on both ends,
- 20:14Speaker 3: both sides. And then you have a lot of stuff
- 20:16Speaker 3: that carries over from out of state, so you have
- 20:18Speaker 3: people from Arizona, California, Midwest, the South, back East. They
- 20:23Speaker 3: carry all that stuff here, so anything can pop off
- 20:26Speaker 3: at any time. So it's one of those things where
- 20:29Speaker 3: it's very interesting. It's very interesting for the most part.
- 20:32Speaker 3: Most people are here to have fun. Most people are
- 20:34Speaker 3: here to enjoy things, and it is a very good vibe.
- 20:38Speaker 3: It's something that you have to experience. I can't describe
- 20:41Speaker 3: it because you have to experience yourself. The only thing
- 20:43Speaker 3: I will say is this, I don't know if we'll
- 20:46Speaker 3: ever get a big fight feel here again, because we
- 20:48Speaker 3: don't have any big fighters that are different than just fighters.
- 20:53Speaker 3: We don't have entertainment like Floyd was different. He was
- 20:55Speaker 3: of one of one when people came to see him.
- 20:58Speaker 3: People come and see Tank and Crawford, those types. It's
- 21:01Speaker 3: not the same.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Well, Canelo, he comes here so many times, it's not
- 21:05Speaker 2: the same. This is now.
- 21:06Speaker 3: Canelo brings people out, brings the women out too, which
- 21:09Speaker 3: is always a great thing. But Canelo comes here and
- 21:13Speaker 3: fights twice a year basically, so it's not the same
- 21:16Speaker 3: type of vibe as of Floyd was because Florida to
- 21:19Speaker 3: fight once a year, twice a year, and the vibe
- 21:23Speaker 3: of it was always a big deal. It was always
- 21:25Speaker 3: a thing that the city may happen. Hell, the city
- 21:28Speaker 3: pushed back his jail sentence one year because he was fighting,
- 21:31Speaker 3: So that shows you the money he was bringing in
- 21:33Speaker 3: and they kind of vibe that fight was about.
- 21:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I think I read something online that when many
- 21:39Speaker 4: Paquilla was fighting that in his hometown, like there was
- 21:42Speaker 4: literally no no activity, like, no trust went out, no firefighters,
- 21:47Speaker 4: nothing like the town stopped dead. You know, I forget
- 21:49Speaker 4: where it's from, but uh yeah, just that kind of thing. Yeah,
- 21:52Speaker 4: I can see that, you know, the the excitement that
- 21:55Speaker 4: we remember from when we were younger isn't really there.
- 21:57Speaker 3: But okay, would you say that you brought hack. Yeah,
- 22:00Speaker 3: when he would fight Marquettes, it was very dangerous because
- 22:05Speaker 3: you have the Filipinos Mexicans and it was it was,
- 22:09Speaker 3: And so most people don't think of that because you
- 22:11Speaker 3: don't live in Vegas. So Vegas has a very big
- 22:14Speaker 3: Mexican population, has a very big Filipino and Asian population
- 22:18Speaker 3: that no one talks about. The beef those two would
- 22:20Speaker 3: have during those fights was very underrated, very very underrated.
- 22:24Speaker 3: So yeah, something that no very few people know about,
- 22:26Speaker 3: but it was.
- 22:27Speaker 2: It was real.
- 22:28Speaker 4: Gotcha, what's the one of the craziest things you've seen
- 22:30Speaker 4: after a mixed company fight in Vegas?
- 22:35Speaker 3: The Floyd and Hadden fight, Basically the cops had to
- 22:37Speaker 3: come into a casino and take people away.
- 22:40Speaker 4: Totally shit.
- 22:41Speaker 3: The hat was getting member. That was when Hatten was undefeated.
- 22:44Speaker 3: He was at the top of the top like that.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Remember he hadten Brian Rick Catton was starting to get
- 22:48Speaker 3: buzzed that he shouldn't have gotten so they were pubbing
- 22:51Speaker 3: him as the next guy. And by around like six,
- 22:54Speaker 3: you kind of saw the fight going the way it
- 22:55Speaker 3: was going to go. So all them people came across
- 22:58Speaker 3: the pond who spent a lot of money and we're
- 23:00Speaker 3: drinking the whole week. Well you see how you know
- 23:03Speaker 3: when you know your when your fighters down five to
- 23:05Speaker 3: two and how are seven nothing? You know how it goes,
- 23:08Speaker 3: you know how it feels in your guy has no
- 23:10Speaker 3: hope and boy, it was that's part of it why
- 23:14Speaker 3: they stopped showing the fights. That reason that there. So, yeah,
- 23:16Speaker 3: it was. It was not pretty at all. It was not.
- 23:19Speaker 2: But that's probably the craziest thing I've seen in.
- 23:22Speaker 3: Person, was just the lack of respect from the patrons
- 23:27Speaker 3: of just throwing things, throwing beer bottles, throwing glasses, fighting,
- 23:30Speaker 3: people getting loud, security and cops having to get called. Uh,
- 23:35Speaker 3: casino employees had to go to the hospital because they
- 23:37Speaker 3: got cut or whatever. Yeah, it was.
- 23:39Speaker 2: That was probably the wildest.
- 23:40Speaker 3: And that's again you got an American black guy versus
- 23:43Speaker 3: the guy from England.
- 23:44Speaker 2: Yeah, mixed company. Yeah, that's basically the soccer hooligans.
- 23:48Speaker 3: But of boxing, they go, then go and you're getting
- 23:52Speaker 3: you're getting beat and there's nothing.
- 23:54Speaker 2: You can do.
- 23:55Speaker 3: Sure, that's another thing. That's thing. There was nothing that
- 23:59Speaker 3: could have done. There's no plan B. There's no plan See,
- 24:02Speaker 3: there's no go for bro. There was nothing he could
- 24:04Speaker 3: have done.
- 24:04Speaker 4: Sure, yeah, well, I'd like to go see if i'd
- 24:07Speaker 4: Biggs some time. But I realized last year that I can't.
- 24:11Speaker 4: I really can't be in a place that's legally allowed
- 24:13Speaker 4: to serve you alcohol twenty four hours a day. Because
- 24:15Speaker 4: I went to Atlantic City for my birthday in twenty
- 24:17Speaker 4: twenty three in February.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Let's just say, man, never again. I went out straight.
- 24:23Speaker 2: Was that you ain't got no restraight.
- 24:25Speaker 4: Look what, I am a responsible grown man in every
- 24:29Speaker 4: aspect of my life. But the bartenders they really have
- 24:31Speaker 4: to be like babysitters. They have to be like, no
- 24:33Speaker 4: more drinking, no no, no, it's two am, no drinking,
- 24:36Speaker 4: no more. Okay, if you got anybody.
- 24:39Speaker 3: If you've got a control, they'll do that. But they're
- 24:41Speaker 3: not doing it just because on a stand.
- 24:44Speaker 4: You can't just have a bartender that says, sure, it's
- 24:46Speaker 4: four in the morning, here's here's a margarita, Like that's
- 24:49Speaker 4: I'm sorry, that doesn't work. You got to tell me again,
- 24:52Speaker 4: like a little baby. We talked about it. It's last call.
- 24:55Speaker 4: If you want more drinkings, come back tomorrow. I got you, so, yeah,
- 24:59Speaker 4: but you know, maybe one of these days, once I'm
- 25:00Speaker 4: older and a little bit more chilled. Yeah, exactly, I'm
- 25:06Speaker 4: thirty eight, you know, maybe like by by forty five,
- 25:09Speaker 4: maybe I'll go to art in Vegas and then Babe.
- 25:13Speaker 4: Speaking of which, let's uh, I kind of want to
- 25:16Speaker 4: move on to a new segment of ours. Are you
- 25:18Speaker 4: ready for it?
- 25:19Speaker 2: Sure?
- 25:20Speaker 4: Sure, let's pop one of these open. It's a kind
- 25:23Speaker 4: of cold outside, relatively speaking, so I'm going to find
- 25:25Speaker 4: myself a stout beer from my friends at Button brew House.
- 25:29Speaker 4: Not an ad, but shout out to them. But yeah,
- 25:32Speaker 4: we want to talk about a segment called pop Pugilism.
- 25:36Speaker 4: Pugilism is just a word that it just means boxing
- 25:39Speaker 4: comes from Latin and a boxer is a pugilist. So
- 25:42Speaker 4: now you see why our show is rated E for educational.
- 25:44Speaker 4: You're learning a lot of shit today, folks. So in
- 25:47Speaker 4: this segment, we want to discuss maybe a boxing movie,
- 25:50Speaker 4: TV show, documentary, a book if I can get through
- 25:53Speaker 4: something I ordered fast enough. But I wanted to talk
- 25:57Speaker 4: about the movie Ali from two thousand and one, directed
- 25:59Speaker 4: by Mike Man and starring Will Smith as the Legend himself.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Have you seen this movie?
- 26:04Speaker 3: Yeah, it's been a while, It's been a while. I've
- 26:05Speaker 3: seen it. Good movie for everything that they tried to do.
- 26:09Speaker 3: It's a lot too when a guy like that is
- 26:11Speaker 3: so much to capture, so you gotta it's gonna be
- 26:14Speaker 3: a long movie. It's lit details, You're gonna miss some things.
- 26:17Speaker 3: It's not gonna be perfect. It's just too much to
- 26:19Speaker 3: be perfect. But it did. It served the purpose. It
- 26:23Speaker 3: served the purpose. However, Jamie Fox was the best part
- 26:25Speaker 3: of the movie. He was definitely the funniest part. But
- 26:29Speaker 3: it showed a different side of boxing that they know
- 26:31Speaker 3: me don't see, and a lot of it is that
- 26:34Speaker 3: the boxers really don't have nobody backing them up. Like
- 26:38Speaker 3: everybody's trying to take take take from the boxers, right,
- 26:40Speaker 3: the other bread winners, the other ones doing everything. So
- 26:43Speaker 3: at the end of the day, it kind of like
- 26:45Speaker 3: kind of let you know that you can have all
- 26:47Speaker 3: the women, you can have all the money. Once the
- 26:49Speaker 3: show's over, it is over and you're not left with much.
- 26:53Speaker 2: And that's thing.
- 26:53Speaker 3: That kind of stuff, especially back then, a little different
- 26:56Speaker 3: now because we have more resources and more things to
- 26:58Speaker 3: go back off of, But back then it was really
- 27:00Speaker 3: sad because you'd be champ of the world. You can
- 27:02Speaker 3: beloved you can be a hero to your country by
- 27:05Speaker 3: the end of the day if you don't have stuff
- 27:08Speaker 3: in order, and if you fight so long, there's just
- 27:11Speaker 3: not left. And it was kind of sad how things
- 27:13Speaker 3: shook out. But the movie was pretty good for what
- 27:15Speaker 3: it was supposed to do. It wasn't amazing, but it was.
- 27:18Speaker 3: It was good. It was good.
- 27:20Speaker 4: I agree it was a good movie. I don't think
- 27:22Speaker 4: it was great. I mean, Michael Man is a great director,
- 27:24Speaker 4: so he he doesn't do a lot of things poorly.
- 27:27Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 27:28Speaker 4: If you're familiar with him, you know he's a man hunter. Yeah,
- 27:31Speaker 4: I thought it was an odd pairing. I wondered why
- 27:33Speaker 4: this guy. I've found out since that you know he did.
- 27:36Speaker 4: He's about one year younger than Muhammad Ali. He called
- 27:40Speaker 4: him one of his heroes, so, you know, I figured
- 27:43Speaker 4: he'd be. It was a story that was important to him.
- 27:46Speaker 4: But at the end of the day, it seemed that
- 27:47Speaker 4: Will Smith really wanted Michael Mann. Plus he was coming
- 27:49Speaker 4: off a hot streak in the nineties. He got nominated
- 27:53Speaker 4: for a couple of Oscars for The Insider from nineteen
- 27:55Speaker 4: ninety nine, which is an awesome movie that should have
- 27:58Speaker 4: won Best Picture Best Director. But in the two thousand Oscars,
- 28:03Speaker 4: that was the year that American beauty swept everything, which
- 28:06Speaker 4: no thank you, but but yeah, I mean the movies.
- 28:09Speaker 4: It was actually a flop, like it only made eighty
- 28:11Speaker 4: seven million on a budget of about one hundred and
- 28:13Speaker 4: eighteen on the high end. So critics mostly liked it.
- 28:16Speaker 4: I think might be controversial. I think Will Smith is
- 28:19Speaker 4: the weakest link. Honestly, I thought it came off like
- 28:23Speaker 4: he was doing an impersonation of Muhammadli the whole time.
- 28:26Speaker 4: It never felt natural, It never felt like he was
- 28:28Speaker 4: embodying the spirit the voice he did. He tried to
- 28:33Speaker 4: do the lyrical voice, and it got kind of grating.
- 28:35Speaker 4: It just was the same cadence. It was taking me
- 28:38Speaker 4: out of it.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Man.
- 28:38Speaker 4: I don't know, on paper, it seemed like a good
- 28:41Speaker 4: idea because will you know, I've loved Will Smith and
- 28:43Speaker 4: a lot of stuff since I was a kid. Charismatic,
- 28:45Speaker 4: great presence, you know, he's a bona fide movie star.
- 28:48Speaker 4: Never been a great dramatic actor, let's be honest. So
- 28:52Speaker 4: I think that was a bit of a misstep on
- 28:54Speaker 4: in casting.
- 28:55Speaker 3: But well, it's tough because a lot of guys that
- 28:57Speaker 3: could have played ally because he kind of favors it,
- 29:00Speaker 3: so it was like the perfect mix that way.
- 29:03Speaker 2: It's a tough again, here's the thing, it's a tough
- 29:05Speaker 2: draw man.
- 29:06Speaker 3: That's a There's so many things about Ali that you
- 29:10Speaker 3: have to capture in a two and a half hour film.
- 29:14Speaker 3: I don't think anyone could have done. I don't think
- 29:16Speaker 3: anyone could have done as good of a job as
- 29:17Speaker 3: Will did. It's just tough because there's so much going on,
- 29:22Speaker 3: like you mentioned, and everything about the accent part, like
- 29:25Speaker 3: that part obviously the movie in a while, but just
- 29:28Speaker 3: thinking about that, being able to do that for two
- 29:30Speaker 3: and a half hours is a different thing. But for
- 29:34Speaker 3: what movies were back then, for what they are now,
- 29:37Speaker 3: I think it's two different things. So I'm not quite
- 29:40Speaker 3: surprised by that. But I think he did. He did
- 29:44Speaker 3: what he needed to do. I don't think it's an
- 29:46Speaker 3: amazing movie that we're gonna remember forever forever. At the
- 29:48Speaker 3: same time, but it's not terrible where it's like, oh,
- 29:50Speaker 3: I'm never gonna watch it again. Sure it comes on
- 29:53Speaker 3: on the movie channels all the time and whatnot. And
- 29:56Speaker 3: serve the purpose, I'll put it that way. It serve
- 29:58Speaker 3: the purpose it was supposed to.
- 30:00Speaker 4: Well, here's one for you. Spike Lee really wanted to
- 30:02Speaker 4: direct this movie, and he said that only a black
- 30:05Speaker 4: man could tell Muhammad lee story. That's not something I'm
- 30:08Speaker 4: qualified to have an opinion on. But a Spike Lee
- 30:11Speaker 4: Muhammad Muhammad Ali movie, what would.
- 30:13Speaker 2: You think about that? Shad have happened?
- 30:17Speaker 3: Politics involved, There's a lot of things when it comes
- 30:19Speaker 3: to a family that's involved. If there's a state, there's
- 30:22Speaker 3: so many different things that go on, so you just
- 30:25Speaker 3: never know what was behind the scenes.
- 30:27Speaker 2: But Spike Lee, I would have preferred a Spike Lee
- 30:30Speaker 2: got that.
- 30:30Speaker 3: I think things are a bit different if that's the case,
- 30:33Speaker 3: and I also think he brings out better Will Smith
- 30:35Speaker 3: in that before I.
- 30:36Speaker 2: Think so too.
- 30:36Speaker 4: I think the director brings out the performances from their leads.
- 30:39Speaker 4: I think Spike would have done a better job. I
- 30:40Speaker 4: read an article that quoted, you know, an anonymous person
- 30:43Speaker 4: involved with the production, So make of that what you will.
- 30:46Speaker 4: But they said that ultimately, if Will wanted Spike, it
- 30:49Speaker 4: would have been Spike. But there was also concern, according
- 30:52Speaker 4: to this person, about Spike making a more militant movie,
- 30:55Speaker 4: and they wanted something more with broad appeal.
- 30:58Speaker 2: Like Michael Mann.
- 30:58Speaker 4: But the movie flopped anyway.
- 30:59Speaker 2: So but as we'll take it a risk, I mean
- 31:01Speaker 2: you should have taken a risk.
- 31:02Speaker 3: But yes, Spike is a different guy and not everyone's
- 31:05Speaker 3: going to buy in fully, Like the money is so
- 31:08Speaker 3: important because what happens is this when it comes to
- 31:11Speaker 3: making a movie and having budgets, Spike may not be
- 31:14Speaker 3: able to get one hundred and fifty million dollars for
- 31:16Speaker 3: a budget.
- 31:16Speaker 4: They would not yet they would not have anyway.
- 31:19Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, they may not want to put him
- 31:21Speaker 3: out of that for what you just mentioned. This is
- 31:23Speaker 3: a movie that's gonna be on every streen in America.
- 31:25Speaker 3: There are certain messages that they don't want portrayed. So
- 31:28Speaker 3: I'm not quite you know, you know, I'm not quite
- 31:32Speaker 3: surprised by that. But it's one of those things where
- 31:34Speaker 3: looking back line, that would have been interesting.
- 31:38Speaker 4: Oh I just thought of something. Here's one for you. Okay,
- 31:41Speaker 4: completely ignore looks like whether the person looks like Muhammeddli
- 31:46Speaker 4: or not. Not now, not in his prime, Wesley Snipes
- 31:50Speaker 4: could have played a good Muhammed Ali in terms of
- 31:52Speaker 4: the spirit. Let me tell you why stick stick with me.
- 31:54Speaker 4: He's an action star, he's a martial artist, but he's
- 31:57Speaker 4: also a good dramatic actor, and he's very arrismatic, and
- 32:00Speaker 4: I think he can embody that larger than I can
- 32:04Speaker 4: kill Jackie right now.
- 32:05Speaker 2: That's why I said, first of all, he.
- 32:09Speaker 3: Makes his abilities for acting in Will's complexion and body.
- 32:13Speaker 2: You got something fair? That's fair?
- 32:14Speaker 4: I think I never good.
- 32:17Speaker 2: No, you can't sell Camember. This is different.
- 32:19Speaker 3: This is deeper than just a movie, you know what
- 32:21Speaker 3: I mean, a nine figure budget, it's a it's a thinking,
- 32:26Speaker 3: it's a it's a whole project that a lot of
- 32:28Speaker 3: people are involved with. So you can't have Wesley Snipes
- 32:31Speaker 3: playing Ali when you're trying to sell a movie and
- 32:35Speaker 3: the crossover peal to other people.
- 32:37Speaker 2: That would have been tough. But I know, I get
- 32:38Speaker 2: what you're coming from, though, I get.
- 32:39Speaker 4: Here in terms of the ability to embody that. That
- 32:43Speaker 4: kind of the characteristics of the guy. You know, I
- 32:45Speaker 4: think I've never loved White Man Can't Jump. I rewatched
- 32:48Speaker 4: it for the first time in a long time, like
- 32:50Speaker 4: within the last year. There's just the two Woody Harrelson
- 32:53Speaker 4: and Wesley's times of just jabbering at each other.
- 32:55Speaker 2: It's annoying, but.
- 32:56Speaker 4: Wesley is really funny, he's quick on his feet, he's
- 32:59Speaker 4: got some really could insult in that movie. And I
- 33:01Speaker 4: just thought, right now, you know again, yes the look
- 33:04Speaker 4: isn't gonna work.
- 33:06Speaker 2: But in terms of who can embody.
- 33:07Speaker 4: That, I think Wes Wesley doesn't get enough to you know,
- 33:09Speaker 4: I think he's a household name, but he doesn't get
- 33:11Speaker 4: enough to for being a really good dramatic actor because
- 33:14Speaker 4: like who's who's these great action star martial artists, you know,
- 33:17Speaker 4: John Clode, Van Dam and Jackie Chan They couldn't be
- 33:19Speaker 4: in like a Shakespeare adaptation Nasty Snipe. Could They absolutely could.
- 33:23Speaker 4: He's got the the full package. So but yeah, in
- 33:26Speaker 4: terms of whether people will actually buy into that, he
- 33:28Speaker 4: looks like Muhammad Ali, right, I will, I will accept that.
- 33:32Speaker 2: So also, certain certain actors get certain favors. That's true.
- 33:36Speaker 3: Smith is gonna get top choice for that movie. Will
- 33:39Speaker 3: Smith's not going to turn that down. It's a legacy
- 33:41Speaker 3: play for him.
- 33:42Speaker 2: True.
- 33:43Speaker 4: And at the end of the day, what did I
- 33:45Speaker 4: just say? The director was his choice?
- 33:46Speaker 2: So always always cool.
- 33:48Speaker 4: So if you if you would rate this movie out
- 33:50Speaker 4: of four gloves, what would you give.
- 33:54Speaker 2: I'll want to be nice to say three. That's nice.
- 33:57Speaker 2: That's exactly what I was. What I was gonna say,
- 33:58Speaker 2: I'm gonna be nice. I could go two point eight
- 34:02Speaker 2: or three point two. I'll be nice and you say three. Okay, Yeah,
- 34:05Speaker 2: I think I would.
- 34:06Speaker 4: I think a Spike Lee Spike Lee Ali movie would
- 34:09Speaker 4: easy go to three point five maybe three point But.
- 34:13Speaker 2: People would not be comfortable with that. That's the thing.
- 34:15Speaker 3: People would not be comfortable people to have things to say.
- 34:18Speaker 3: And you got to remember when you saw a movie
- 34:20Speaker 3: like that, that a lot of people are gonna be
- 34:21Speaker 3: interested in, they're gonna watch. You gotta sell it, and
- 34:24Speaker 3: certain people are not gonna be comfortable, you know, listening
- 34:27Speaker 3: certain things for two and a half hours. I personally
- 34:29Speaker 3: don't care, but I get the grander scheme. When you
- 34:32Speaker 3: when you're in business and you gotta uphill everybody, you
- 34:34Speaker 3: got to make certain decisions, So I get it.
- 34:37Speaker 4: Sure, But again I think flopped, so they could have.
- 34:41Speaker 3: I don't hear that it didn't flop, because here's what
- 34:43Speaker 3: ends up happening. Those numbers are US based.
- 34:47Speaker 4: No, there was total the studio lots one hundred million dollars.
- 34:50Speaker 2: I lived it up.
- 34:51Speaker 4: Oh really yeah, no, No, that was it was a
- 34:53Speaker 4: financial lot. It came out December two, Christmas two thousand
- 34:57Speaker 4: and one, and The Lord of the Rings the first
- 34:59Speaker 4: Lord of the Rings around the same time.
- 35:00Speaker 3: So I remember saying Christmas night because the Lakers playing
- 35:03Speaker 3: sixers that year on christ and I was seeing it
- 35:06Speaker 3: after that.
- 35:06Speaker 2: I know, I remember seeing the movie. Oh okay, you
- 35:08Speaker 2: were there, Yeah, in theaters. However, damn, I didn't know
- 35:11Speaker 2: what lost that much. Yeah. Yeah, it's like I said,
- 35:15Speaker 2: they they're okay, They're okay.
- 35:18Speaker 4: Well, I'm excited about the pop pugel looks pop pugilism segment.
- 35:22Speaker 4: I should have named it something I could say a
- 35:24Speaker 4: little better, but no, I'm excited about it because I
- 35:27Speaker 4: actually don't watch a lot of boxing movies. I'm a
- 35:29Speaker 4: movie buff. I love film I love going to the theaters,
- 35:31Speaker 4: but I never got into boxing movies a lot because
- 35:34Speaker 4: I watched real boxing, you know, something about a If
- 35:37Speaker 4: it's a movie about a real life boxer, I would
- 35:39Speaker 4: rather watch a documentary, you know. But so this segment
- 35:42Speaker 4: actually is exciting for me because I get to check
- 35:44Speaker 4: off the list and go down check these movies out
- 35:47Speaker 4: that I haven't seen, talk about them with you, even
- 35:49Speaker 4: if it's something that you haven't seen. It'd be cool
- 35:52Speaker 4: to bring it up. Maybe it's like a hitten gem
- 35:53Speaker 4: or something.
- 35:54Speaker 2: Absolutely so.
- 35:55Speaker 4: Yeah, So that's that's pop Pugilism for episode three. And
- 35:59Speaker 4: if you want to check out a good boxing movie,
- 36:03Speaker 4: maybe not great. Your mileage may vary on Will Smith's performance,
- 36:07Speaker 4: check out Ali from two thousand and one.
- 36:09Speaker 2: The boxing.
- 36:10Speaker 4: The fights are actually really well done. They're really well filmed.
- 36:13Speaker 2: Mm hmm. Yeah.
- 36:13Speaker 3: They captured all of the moments well, a lot of
- 36:16Speaker 3: the moments like throwing Manila and you know these the
- 36:19Speaker 3: fight in seventy one. All those moments are captured very
- 36:23Speaker 3: very well.
- 36:24Speaker 4: But and I forgot to mention that the reason they
- 36:27Speaker 4: look so good is because, uh, the other boxers that
- 36:30Speaker 4: were in the movie, the real boxers that were depicted
- 36:33Speaker 4: in the movie Sunny Liston, Jofe Frasier, George Forman, they're
- 36:36Speaker 4: played by actual pro boxers. Yep, So there's farn in
- 36:40Speaker 4: those in those segments when they're in the ring. You know,
- 36:43Speaker 4: they're not afraid to take a punch. You know, they're
- 36:45Speaker 4: they're trains, they know what they're doing.
- 36:47Speaker 2: They look good. So my question before.
- 36:49Speaker 3: We move on here, Yeah, there's the Floyd Weather movie
- 36:53Speaker 3: do anything, Do they have any appeal or any wood.
- 36:59Speaker 4: It would have have to be a very low budget
- 37:01Speaker 4: movie from a very small audience, and it could make
- 37:06Speaker 4: money if it was like for thirty million bucks.
- 37:08Speaker 2: It was made for thirty million bucks. You know what
- 37:10Speaker 2: I mean?
- 37:10Speaker 4: I think, Yeah, I mean a lot of people know
- 37:12Speaker 4: who he is, but he's not he's a living legend.
- 37:16Speaker 4: He's not you know, he's not that he's not that good.
- 37:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I think if they you've seen numerous Tyson movies,
- 37:23Speaker 2: we don't need to see anymore. There's not a whole
- 37:27Speaker 2: lot of fires that deserve movies. Yeah.
- 37:29Speaker 4: Well, another reason I don't watch a lot of boxing movies.
- 37:32Speaker 4: And we're gonna talk more on this as we go along.
- 37:35Speaker 4: A lot of these movies are about white guys. And
- 37:37Speaker 4: I think, oh, yeah, yeah, I can name a bunch
- 37:42Speaker 4: of that.
- 37:42Speaker 2: I've got him on the list and stuff. Yeah, yeah,
- 37:45Speaker 2: there's guys.
- 37:45Speaker 4: Have even heard of a movie called Bleed for This,
- 37:48Speaker 4: a movie called South Paul. You know, I may I
- 37:49Speaker 4: literally made a full list I want to talk about.
- 37:52Speaker 4: I think there's a lot of black or brown boxers
- 37:54Speaker 4: that deserve movies.
- 37:55Speaker 2: But yeah, who can be sold into a daily La one.
- 37:58Speaker 2: I have to be sold into one.
- 38:00Speaker 3: Like I'm not saying give it nine figures, but I
- 38:03Speaker 3: can be sold in the one from where what he
- 38:06Speaker 3: did as a boxer as a promoter at the current day,
- 38:08Speaker 3: I could be sold in the one. If you're talking,
- 38:11Speaker 3: I could. I'm not saying I spend my money on it,
- 38:14Speaker 3: but I can be sold on. They should make a move.
- 38:17Speaker 3: He's done a lot as a boxer and promoter and
- 38:20Speaker 3: every day for a long.
- 38:21Speaker 4: Time when there's a lot of drama there to milk.
- 38:23Speaker 3: From, Yeah, a lot there that week. Like I can
- 38:27Speaker 3: be sold on if there was a part that came out.
- 38:29Speaker 3: But oh okay, I get it, except though the budget
- 38:31Speaker 3: gotta be kind of low. But people will see Oscars
- 38:34Speaker 3: a captivated figure. I mean, whenever you win a gold
- 38:36Speaker 3: medal as an American, there's people who always remember that
- 38:39Speaker 3: and they always follow that as long as you live.
- 38:41Speaker 3: So there's stuff there with that.
- 38:44Speaker 4: Sure, when he's got a very particular reputation with the
- 38:49Speaker 4: Brown community. You know, yes, yes, my parents I'm text
- 38:52Speaker 4: mex I was born in Houston, but my parents are
- 38:54Speaker 4: from the border across the world, and they didn't like
- 38:57Speaker 4: that dude because he they thought, you know, let's keep
- 39:01Speaker 4: this clean for the audience.
- 39:02Speaker 2: But they just thought he was a pensy like But
- 39:04Speaker 2: Fernando Vargas said some things before the fight.
- 39:08Speaker 3: I'm not going to repeat because that's not my job,
- 39:10Speaker 3: but you know, he basically called him up, He basically
- 39:13Speaker 3: called him on authentic and that was always.
- 39:16Speaker 2: Stuck with me. That was interesting.
- 39:18Speaker 3: And then when you hear a lot of people echo
- 39:20Speaker 3: those same sentiments like, oh, that's interesting. And but again
- 39:24Speaker 3: that's what I'm saying. It takes stuff like that to
- 39:26Speaker 3: be captivated. Like people want to know and hear side
- 39:29Speaker 3: of the store. They want to know why that was
- 39:31Speaker 3: a play. The thing that they want to know when,
- 39:34Speaker 3: when did the change happen? What causes table?
- 39:37Speaker 2: Was it fame? Was it you know, was it money?
- 39:39Speaker 2: Was it self? Doubt? Like all those things. So I said,
- 39:42Speaker 2: he has the story of all the guys that.
- 39:44Speaker 3: Are fun over the last forty years, outside of Tyson,
- 39:48Speaker 3: he probably has the most interesting story that he can
- 39:50Speaker 3: make a movie out of.
- 39:51Speaker 4: Sure, sure, yeah, I mean he's the guy didn't actually
- 39:54Speaker 4: speak Spanish. He was like from was he from La right?
- 39:56Speaker 4: So he was an American, an American brown guy, and
- 40:00Speaker 4: you know, at the end of the day, whatever you know,
- 40:01Speaker 4: you don't have to I speak Spanish, you don't have
- 40:03Speaker 4: to do it to be authentically you know, Hispanic, Latino, Mexican,
- 40:06Speaker 4: whatever it is.
- 40:06Speaker 2: He crossed over to.
- 40:07Speaker 3: Being a pop star and that's something white and we
- 40:10Speaker 3: didn't know that was possible. So there's like I did
- 40:12Speaker 3: I if it was made.
- 40:14Speaker 2: I would. I would understand it. I'll put it that way.
- 40:16Speaker 2: Not sang. It would do great. No, sing would be terrible.
- 40:18Speaker 3: I would if somebody put money behind it to make
- 40:21Speaker 3: a project, I would be like, oh okay, Like I
- 40:22Speaker 3: could see where they're I see where this is going.
- 40:25Speaker 3: I understand where this is going.
- 40:26Speaker 4: Sure, and we would talk about it on pop Pegic
- 40:29Speaker 4: the Missed Company podcast. Absolutely got to wrap this up
- 40:34Speaker 4: because we want to. I don't want to keep these
- 40:35Speaker 4: too too long, but I gotta I gotta mail that
- 40:37Speaker 4: question from somebody that I wanted to toss at you.
- 40:40Speaker 4: This one is from Brett B. So thank you Brett
- 40:44Speaker 4: for writing in. Just for that, we're going to upgrade
- 40:46Speaker 4: you to Brett A plus today. Okay, it's a two parter. Yeah,
- 40:52Speaker 4: what skill and or trade do great boxers have that
- 40:56Speaker 4: separates them from average ones, and what skill or trait
- 40:59Speaker 4: do you think is most on rate it.
- 41:01Speaker 3: So the skill in trade I want to say is
- 41:04Speaker 3: conditioning and focus. Being able to be well conditioned, being
- 41:08Speaker 3: able to dig deep when it's not there, being able
- 41:11Speaker 3: to go another level because you're in great shape and
- 41:13Speaker 3: you're focus, you're not getting caught up on the dumb stuff.
- 41:16Speaker 3: We've seen so many We've seen the non focused fighters.
- 41:19Speaker 3: There's a lot of non focused guys. Guys will try
- 41:20Speaker 3: to do things like hit below the bell, hit behind it.
- 41:23Speaker 3: You know, they'll they'll do stuff because they're not focused.
- 41:26Speaker 3: They're not ready. We mentioned za Juna's name earlier, talented
- 41:29Speaker 3: as hell and just couldn't figure it out. There's a
- 41:31Speaker 3: bunch of those types, the victor or T's types. There's
- 41:34Speaker 3: a guy like guys that are talented, but just up here,
- 41:36Speaker 3: they're just they can't focus throughout the whole fighters can't
- 41:40Speaker 3: and they lose focus and.
- 41:41Speaker 2: Then they fall apart.
- 41:43Speaker 3: The great fighters they maintain great great conditioning, great focus,
- 41:47Speaker 3: and they stick. They're able to adjust whatever they need
- 41:50Speaker 3: to adjust to. So whatever they need to do, they
- 41:54Speaker 3: make adjustments mid fight and they do what it takes
- 41:57Speaker 3: to win or keep the fight close or whatever it
- 41:59Speaker 3: needs be. But that's the thing I would saying, the
- 42:02Speaker 3: focusing and the conditioning. You can throw adjustments and there
- 42:05Speaker 3: were focused if you like, but but those would be
- 42:08Speaker 3: the traits for sure.
- 42:10Speaker 4: Okay, I'm gonna go with footwork specifically. This is this
- 42:16Speaker 4: is something too that I think listeners might want to know.
- 42:18Speaker 4: If you're if you think you're a tough guy because
- 42:20Speaker 4: you work out at the gym, you know, five days
- 42:22Speaker 4: a week, six sticks a week, whatever, and you think
- 42:24Speaker 4: you can tuck shit to somebody at a dive bar
- 42:27Speaker 4: and get into a fight and throw a punch.
- 42:29Speaker 2: Let me tell you, man, I.
- 42:30Speaker 4: Don't care if you do arm day five days a
- 42:32Speaker 4: week and you got these giant jack arms, that's not
- 42:34Speaker 4: where the strength comes from. Power punches come from the
- 42:38Speaker 4: core and from your legs, setting your weight down, turning
- 42:41Speaker 4: the hip, turning the shoulder from the shoulders loose. So
- 42:45Speaker 4: there's a lot of dudes that think I got these
- 42:47Speaker 4: big ass arms, I'm gonna get into a fight just
- 42:49Speaker 4: because your check doesn't mean you know how to fight.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Have crazy calves?
- 42:54Speaker 4: You did that crazy go yeah.
- 42:55Speaker 3: Crazy calves? When you think about the size he was
- 42:58Speaker 3: and whatnot.
- 42:59Speaker 4: Yeah, yep, yeah, So fellas, please don't don't just go
- 43:03Speaker 4: out there talking shit because you got these brolick arms. Yeah,
- 43:07Speaker 4: the ability to throw a punch you gotta have, you know,
- 43:10Speaker 4: like I said, steadier weight sit on those punches. But
- 43:13Speaker 4: also you got to hit and not get hit and
- 43:15Speaker 4: that takes a lot of footwork. So I think that
- 43:18Speaker 4: plus the ability to take a punch, which Mike Tyson said,
- 43:22Speaker 4: everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face.
- 43:24Speaker 4: But even if you do, you still got to stick
- 43:26Speaker 4: to the plan. So in terms of yes, in terms
- 43:29Speaker 4: of boxing, but also again in terms of the listeners.
- 43:31Speaker 4: If you think you're a tough guy, have a buddy
- 43:33Speaker 4: of yours punch you in the face so you really
- 43:35Speaker 4: know what it's like.
- 43:36Speaker 2: You're not gonna die. Nah.
- 43:38Speaker 3: So here's what you're thinking. You gotta get hit from
- 43:41Speaker 3: an angle you can't see. Okay, that's boxing, because you
- 43:44Speaker 3: can you can tense up and get ready for a punch.
- 43:47Speaker 3: That's a good point. You're fighting and you get hit
- 43:49Speaker 3: with a punch you don't see company, that's fot That's
- 43:52Speaker 3: what I was like, Oh, what's your chin really made?
- 43:54Speaker 2: Live? That's a good point. You're right.
- 43:56Speaker 4: I'll take it back. Guys, tell your buddies to punch
- 43:59Speaker 4: you in the face when you least expect, or.
- 44:01Speaker 3: Just from a different angle, when you can't see it.
- 44:03Speaker 3: You can't you can't anticipate it, because that's the difference.
- 44:06Speaker 3: A lot of these knockouts don't come from how hard
- 44:08Speaker 3: a guy gets hit. It's getting hit me. You're not
- 44:10Speaker 3: expecting it, or you can't see it right and then
- 44:13Speaker 3: and then the punch too. Can't just be wild swinging punches,
- 44:17Speaker 3: you know.
- 44:17Speaker 2: Oh, it'sn't precise. To be very right, yo, have to
- 44:20Speaker 2: be very precise.
- 44:21Speaker 4: So yeah, yeah, so don't think that you know again,
- 44:24Speaker 4: you can just get into a fight at your at
- 44:27Speaker 4: your local buffalo wild wings with somebody.
- 44:29Speaker 3: First of all, don't get a fight in public less
- 44:31Speaker 3: you have to, because you go to jail or get
- 44:32Speaker 3: shot these days and even things are good. However, if
- 44:35Speaker 3: you do get in a fight and it's straight hands,
- 44:38Speaker 3: use the uppercut. No one's expecting you to do uppercut
- 44:41Speaker 3: the uppercut. If you have to fight. I'm not advocated
- 44:45Speaker 3: for fighting.
- 44:45Speaker 2: Don't do it. Don't do it.
- 44:46Speaker 3: Filing the podcasts. I do not want to hit suit
- 44:49Speaker 3: or in trouble. With that being said, if you do
- 44:51Speaker 3: have to score up with somebody and you're in a tussle,
- 44:54Speaker 3: use an uppercut. They will never see it coming and
- 44:56Speaker 3: if you hit it right, you will win the fight.
- 44:59Speaker 2: Excellent.
- 45:00Speaker 4: Another tip here, don't use the same punch over and over.
- 45:03Speaker 4: I see dudes like baby grabbing somebody by the shirt
- 45:05Speaker 4: and just swinging with the right of the left, over
- 45:07Speaker 4: and over and over.
- 45:08Speaker 2: Yeah, break your hand that way. Yeah.
- 45:10Speaker 4: Somebody has any kind of training, even the slightest amount
- 45:12Speaker 4: of training, they'll time you. They'll get in there, they'll dodge,
- 45:15Speaker 4: as you said, a quick uppercut. You're done, good night, baby,
- 45:18Speaker 4: that's done.
- 45:18Speaker 3: Yep, and I especially, and they're going to hit from
- 45:20Speaker 3: the angle. They can't see or prepare for it. So again,
- 45:23Speaker 3: like non violent podcast, not over came from fighting. However,
- 45:27Speaker 3: if you do fight, if you do do it it's
- 45:29Speaker 3: a close tussle, use that uppercut. H him right on
- 45:32Speaker 3: the nose, hit right on the chin, and you will
- 45:35Speaker 3: win because they just can't prepare for it, just can't app.
- 45:38Speaker 4: I think the lesson here, yes, don't fight, but really
- 45:41Speaker 4: what we're saying is, don't get high on your own supply. Fellas,
- 45:44Speaker 4: just because you watch boxing. Maybe you ex said go
- 45:47Speaker 4: to the gym. You know, just because your check doesn't
- 45:49Speaker 4: mean you can fight. So don't get into trouble, Fellas,
- 45:51Speaker 4: because then if you get into trouble, you're gonna miss
- 45:54Speaker 4: the next episode of the Mixed Company podcast in two weeks.
- 45:57Speaker 4: And we don't want you to do that.
- 45:58Speaker 2: That is gonna go viral.
- 45:59Speaker 3: And you know, everybody got Facebook, your mama got Facebook,
- 46:02Speaker 3: your daddy got Facebook, your grandparents, your girlfriend, side hick, whomever.
- 46:06Speaker 2: Everybody got Facebook.
- 46:07Speaker 3: You don't want to be the guy getting dropped in
- 46:08Speaker 3: a local bar because you can't fight, bro.
- 46:11Speaker 4: And if you're Mexican, you're gonna end up on WhatsApp.
- 46:13Speaker 4: All my family's going to see you on WhatsApp.
- 46:15Speaker 2: Okay, all right too, but I'm not gonna go there tonight.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Not doing that.

- 46:55Speaker 3: experience a Vegas fight. It would be after, is the problem. Yeah,
- 46:59Speaker 3: I'm between you know, normal drinking hours. But when again
- 47:02Speaker 3: it's three am, four am and everybody's just laying them
- 47:05Speaker 3: on me. You know, that's when you got to You
- 47:07Speaker 3: got to have some opinion group that tells you, hey,
- 47:10Speaker 3: it's time to go.
- 47:11Speaker 4: Yeah, that's usually our producer, Jabari Davis. Shout out to Jabari.
