- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode of Learn French with Fexingo? Luna: Oh, absolutely! I've been practicing my bonjours and bonsoirs from earlier episodes. Lucas: Awesome! Today we're going to focus on greetings by time of day. We've touched on them before, but let's really nail them. Luna: Yes! I always get confused about when to use bon matin versus bon après-midi. Lucas: That's exactly what we'll fix. So first, the general one: Bonjour. You can use it pretty much all day, but it's especially for morning and afternoon. Luna: Bonjour. That's like 'good day'. Lucas: Exactly. Now, more specific: Bon matin. That's 'good morning'. Luna: Bon matin. So that's just for the morning? Lucas: Right. Usually until around noon or early afternoon. Try saying it. Luna: Bon matin. Lucas: Perfect. Next, when afternoon hits, we switch to Bon après-midi. That's 'good afternoon'. Luna: Bon après-midi. That's a mouthful. Lucas: It is! Let's break it down: Bon — good. Après — after. Midi — noon. So 'after noon'. Luna: Oh, that makes sense! Bon après-midi. Lucas: Then in the evening, we say Bonsoir. That's 'good evening'. It's also used as 'good night' when leaving. Luna: Bonsoir. I love how that sounds. Lucas: Me too. Let's do a quick role-play. It's morning. I'll be you, and you be me. Luna: Okay. So I say... Bonjour Lucas? Lucas: Yes, but try Bon matin since it's morning. Luna: Oh, right. Bon matin, Lucas. Lucas: Bon matin, Luna. How are you? Luna: Ça va bien, merci. Lucas: There you go! Now switch times. It's afternoon now. Luna: Bon après-midi, Lucas. Lucas: Bon après-midi, Luna. You're nailing it. Luna: And evening: Bonsoir. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's quiz. I'll say a time of day, you say the greeting. Morning? Luna: Bon matin. Lucas: Afternoon? Luna: Bon après-midi. Lucas: Evening? Luna: Bonsoir. Lucas: And general all-day? Luna: Bonjour. Lucas: You got it! Great job today. Remember, you can always say bonjour if you're unsure. Luna: But it's fun to be specific. Lucas: Exactly. Thanks for practicing with Fexingo. Keep these phrases handy and try them out. Luna: See you next time! Au revoir! Lucas: À plus tard!
