- 2:03you continue to press play on the Gill podcast.
- 2:06And, you know, really it's all about the guests and their
- 2:08journey, and we've got a great one today here.
- 2:10So, let's hop right into it, longtime friend here for me.
- 2:12So, this is going to be an absolute blast.
- 2:14Help me. Welcome coach extraordinaire.
- 2:16He's with MVA training. We're going to learn about that
- 2:18as well. But help me, welcome the wise,
- 2:20the wonderful, mr. Jeremy Fisher, Jeremy, how are
- 2:22you? I'm doing, well, thanks for
- 2:24having me. Yeah, man, welcome to the show
- 2:26and thanks for being here, man. This is a, this is a treat for
- 2:29me. I, you know, there's some some
- 2:30real special people to me. And you're one of them Jeremy.
- 2:33So it's fun to, you know, be able to share your journey with
- 2:36others and also just a kind of love on you, man.
- 2:38I just tell you how awesome you are.
- 2:39And you know, I mean what we do, you know, we've done it
- 2:42together. Every we have a good coaching
- 2:45education in the very early, Boise back in cash, 2001 or two,
- 2:48or something like that. And you know, we came up
- 2:51together. I remember when you were
- 2:52coaching a Ball State, so you always pick a coach in my eyes,
- 2:55regardless. Hey, I'll tell you.
- 2:57That is something I struggle with a little bit here before we
- 3:00get into a Jeremy. You know, I have people, I'm
- 3:03real big on Twitter, like, that's kind of where I live, you
- 3:06know, people talk about the Multiverse or the metaverse, I
- 3:08just live on Twitter. That's where my life is, right?
- 3:11And I will have people that will say, hey, great job coach or
- 3:14hey, thanks for saying that coach, and I get a little on
- 3:18edge about that, because I'm not a coach anymore.
- 3:21And I hold that title at such a high esteem.
- 3:24Like, I feel like, it's almost like, oh, no.
- 3:26I'm actually, I'm taking away from people like Jeremy and Boo
- 3:29and Joel, and Petros like, you know, it's a But it's so
- 3:33honorable that someone would still call me coach, you know,
- 3:36it's weird for me, but it for you can't take it away.
- 3:40It's like, we have an expression that once an Olympian always in
- 3:43locating such thing, as a former Olympian, you're an Olympian.
- 3:46It's the same thing as a coach at the you affected people's
- 3:50lives, while you were coaching. And so, they'll always see you
- 3:53as coach. And, you know, we'll talk a
- 3:54little bit about it, but I know you and I, and, you know, every
- 3:57other coach or athlete was affected by a coach, some time,
- 4:02though. If I mean it could have been my
- 4:04sixth grade basketball coach or you know, my 6th grade soccer
- 4:07coach, but they had positive effects in our lives.
- 4:10So they'll always be coach. And so I think I think it's a
- 4:13badge of honor. I know you respect it because
- 4:16you work with but you to me that's where your beginning was
- 4:19was a coach. So yours is always a coach you
- 4:22know that that really helped me actually Jeremy because it's a
- 4:25little bit like man, I you know, I'd be like if you called
- 4:27someone who's not a doctor a doctor it's like that they
- 4:29didn't earn that title and maybe Dr. Eve or so for me it's so
- 4:34held such high esteem so you saying that really that means a
- 4:37lot to me. Thank you for so no but I mean
- 4:39you know there are people who cooks for how many years and you
- 4:43know so you affected a lot of people you know they they don't
- 4:46see you as you know Mike you know huge big Gil, you know,
- 4:51equipment provider, you know for championships and everything
- 4:54else, you know, they see you as a hey you know, my Cunningham my
- 4:58my track coach from All State or even before that way.
- 5:02Ever, you know it was a so so I think.
- 5:05Yeah. You're once a coach always a
- 5:06coach. I like that.
- 5:07That means a lot man. Thank you.
- 5:08Well, speaking of that lets get into your store here Jeremy,
- 5:12where does, you know, at some point.
- 5:15And usually, I say for guest, I go, assuming you were an athlete
- 5:19and we got to do talk a little bit about your athleticism, you
- 5:22were an athlete, my friend, holy cow, love that part of your
- 5:25journey, but at some point coaching switched in your mind,
- 5:30it became from something that was done to You, hey, Jeremy, go
- 5:33jump this. Go lift this somewhere along the
- 5:36way it had to be like, oh wait a minute.
- 5:38Like I could be a coach. Like this could be my profession
- 5:41one day. Where does coaching begin for
- 5:43you? Yeah, I didn't.
- 5:47It's kind of an even with track. I mean, my you talked about I
- 5:50was 74 high jumper was, you know, state champion,
- 5:53California, national champ, all that kind of stuff when I was in
- 5:56high school senior year but I started Tracking not so much
- 5:59sophomore year my freshman year. I got hurt.
- 6:02And then didn't get to really do it.
- 6:04And then sophomore year was really my first year of doing
- 6:07track. I didn't do summer track and
- 6:08stuff so I kind of got into it late and I want to be the next,
- 6:11Michael Jordan. You know, my teams were the
- 6:14Chicago Bulls and the UNLV Running Rebels with Jerry
- 6:17tarkanian players were like Stacey augmon and Larry Johnson
- 6:23and those guys. And I wanted to be, you know,
- 6:26like I wanted to go to UNLV play basketball and you know, then go
- 6:33Plenty of. Yeah, but in fact head even
- 6:36though I could, you know, hit my head on the rim, you know, I
- 6:39learned really quick that there's guys who can jump just
- 6:42as high as I can and they're 65. It is there's not many Muggsy
- 6:46Bogues in this world that you were that sort.
- 6:48But there ain't that many people that overcome that but Muggsy
- 6:51Bogues always very strong and I was probably 125 pounds, you
- 6:55know, soaking wet and so I just that body frame everyone.
- 7:01So Just you know, you gravitate to areas where you have success.
- 7:06And so I jump, they said 611 3/4 much sophomore, first year and
- 7:10then a jump. 72 is Junior and 74 is the senior, so it track
- 7:15became kind of a thing. But like if you ask me, probably
- 7:19through college, I still love basketball and you know, it
- 7:23ended up being kind of a sore spot for me because I kept
- 7:26trying to play intramural basketball and all that kind of
- 7:29stuff and you know even at ncaa's The basketball games that
- 7:33don't contest. The high jumpers would have,
- 7:35like, literally, we didn't care about the high jump contest.
- 7:37I mean, it was important, but we wanted to play a basketball game
- 7:41and we all got together at every NCAA.
- 7:43Is that right? Yeah.
- 7:45So, I mean, Eric Bishop chain, Levi.
- 7:49Make the leap for myself. I mean everybody, we all be
- 7:52played this epic game, where there's most epic dunks and
- 7:55craziness, and so I like that, like, that's the sub history, no
- 7:59one unless they were involved in those, you know, like the
- 8:02Infamous after track social, like, just most people just
- 8:05don't know about those kind of aspect.
- 8:07So is this kind of a? Was it a tradition that was
- 8:10before you or did you guys kind of start this?
- 8:12Yeah, it was I think it was before me.
- 8:15It was kind of like we started talking and it was like okay
- 8:18where's the game? And some of the loans, a would
- 8:20show up some of this person who ever loved basketball.
- 8:22Yeah. And we'd find a place to play
- 8:24whether it was a local YMCA or whatever that was close to where
- 8:28ncaa's was and, you know, it was crazy because you'd have Guy who
- 8:32basically jump, like, 611 didn't do very well who's 275 hugging a
- 8:37and then he playing the game and you're like, how did you only
- 8:39chose 6:00? But because he's, you know,
- 8:41almost like literally hitting his head on the room and, you
- 8:44know, stuff like that. We're just it was hilarious.
- 8:46And it was epic and it almost became like that was the thing
- 8:49to look forward to. And it's place because it was
- 8:51like, okay, two seasons over. Hmm, College standpoint.
- 8:54So it was like the first time literally some of them, you
- 8:57know, you talked to Nathan and chain, they played basketball
- 9:00during the season. Even even Jesse Williams.
- 9:04He, you know, he was always playing basketball, that was
- 9:07issued all right. But, you know, yeah, we it was
- 9:11for some of us it's like I hadn't played basketball and six
- 9:14months. So it was like, man, I get to
- 9:16play now and if I get hurt, it doesn't matter.
- 9:19So you can say nothing coach. Yeah, exactly.
- 9:23I just scored points or whatever.
- 9:25So, let's go do this. You went to a really great
- 9:28University. I've become really good friends
- 9:30with some of the support staff. From coaches there at u-dub and
- 9:33have come and gone to some of the bigger cross-country meets
- 9:36up there. Really, I mean, beautiful
- 9:38campus. Beautiful school.
- 9:39Did you ever contemplate trying out for the basketball team
- 9:42there? No, I'm not at most that good.
- 9:44Yeah, I mean I can see, I was, I was just wasn't, you know, the
- 9:47biggest thing about college is the physicality and I wasn't a
- 9:51physical player, I was a finesse player and quite frankly, like,
- 9:54I don't even play my senior year, I gave it up because I
- 9:57signed the scholarship with Wisconsin and chose to go there
- 10:01and so Again, I was late, you know kind of getting reviewed
- 10:05sidetracked because your question is, how do you get to
- 10:07this? But yeah, so I started really
- 10:11started track late and then, you know, even at Wisconsin, it was
- 10:17like, you know, we'd won the Triple Crown pretty much every
- 10:20year, as everything, for pedantic a ballets, I've
- 10:23finished you a runner-up that NCAA is and however many other
- 10:27time All-American. I don't even know what that was.
- 10:28When all Americans only top six, you know, it wasn't even up
- 10:31eight. Oh.
- 10:32Is that right? Oh wow.
- 10:34There's only top six and you got a trophy or a little plaque at
- 10:36your top six and that's not good.
- 10:39Yeah, so it's crazy how much it's changed and how you know,
- 10:42how great like the u.s. tfcc a has done for their support
- 10:45because you know, back then, you know, there was no second team
- 10:49All-American, write all of that. So it was you finish top six and
- 10:55you get a trophy and then your All-American or you're not, you
- 10:58know, I kind of like that, you know, like that cut through it.
- 11:00Like, man, there's only six, but yeah.
- 11:02Yeah, there was no ineligibility thing.
- 11:06So like, you know, I remember jumping his athletes and they
- 11:09hadn't been to class all semester, but you dated cut you
- 11:13until they didn't get you. Ineligible till like the
- 11:16summertime, right? He didn't say a.
- 11:18So there wasn't like, oh, I'm gonna pull you before regionals
- 11:21arm to pull you before I do. So I remember compete against.
- 11:24I won't put his name on. Yeah, so I don't name this.
- 11:26Yeah, no. But I'm sitting there going,
- 11:28man. I just finished my, you know, I
- 11:30did a double major in molecular biology.
- 11:32Nutritional science. And I'm sitting there like, you
- 11:34know struggling because I had a senior thesis and I was like,
- 11:37oh, I remember getting it done and then, you know, getting on a
- 11:41plane to ncaa's. I think it was in the ER know,
- 11:45what think we drove to in Annapolis and 90s.
- 11:48And I think we finished fourth and but I had a terrible me
- 11:51because I was just so stressed out about my finals because then
- 11:54I would start grad school next year and I'm talking to, you
- 11:57know, the guy you know, one of the kids I think the Texas guy
- 12:01he He won Ivan Wagner came out of nowhere.
- 12:04One jump like 2:30 and it was impressive because it was like
- 12:0860 degrees and one of the athletes he was top three
- 12:11though, he's like, yeah, I've just played basketball, you
- 12:13know, go to practice, I have my products and the whole semester.
- 12:16I'm like, no, it's so it was just a different.
- 12:21So you just mentioned you. This is amazing and I knew this,
- 12:25I could remember the exact major but I knew you took a major that
- 12:27I could barely spell molecular biology and you say no.
- 12:32Christian Science. Yeah, Mr. Hudson, what was your
- 12:35thought process going into college to study?
- 12:37Those were you thinking of going to become a coach, or was it a
- 12:40scientist or? I don't know what the hell I've
- 12:43since the age of like six, or seven, I knew I want to be an
- 12:46orthopedic surgeon, really kind of funny to sit there.
- 12:51I'm so amazed at all. The people I graduated school
- 12:54with like, I just, we'll get into it later but I just, you
- 12:58know, walk the usatf and we're not working for them anymore, so
- 13:01forth. Last 12 years, I was the
- 13:03director of the resins program and so we you know stop doing
- 13:06that on September at the last day of September this this year.
- 13:09And so so up until that I was the director of that.
- 13:14So I had one of my teammates who was like but you know, he's a
- 13:18Supreme Court judge in the state of Wisconsin who helped me, but
- 13:22it's just amazing because, like, you know, I have a roommate who
- 13:25is orthopedic surgeon and a has a PHD in biomedical engineering.
- 13:31I have My other roommate, he's a cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic
- 13:37one teammate before. He's the head of radiology at
- 13:41University Wisconsin Madison and so cool is Campbell.
- 13:44Yeah. No I went to school with some
- 13:46fun, unbelievable intelligent minds and stuff like that.
- 13:49It was like perf example. I think I was taking in organic
- 13:51chem or something, and they couldn't find a tutor because it
- 13:54was such a high level class. So I actually had one of my
- 13:56teammates tutor me. I got it set up so that he could
- 14:00get paid to help me, you know, with Mike.
- 14:02Class. And so I went, I mean that's
- 14:05kind of why I went to Wisconsin was academics besides that time.
- 14:08We were very successful. Like I said one, we literally
- 14:12won the Triple Crown every year I was there.
- 14:13And and then finished fourth that ncaa's is the team.
- 14:17And but I went there for free, we don't have pre-med.
- 14:21So it was more just like with medical track and kind of
- 14:25through it, you know, and through the process and doing
- 14:27everything that was supposed to kind of go, you know, I I had a
- 14:32lot of different offers. I mean it's crazy like, you
- 14:35know, I had a, you know, summer intern with flies or so I was
- 14:38offered a, you know, very well paying job.
- 14:40They had like this minority leadership thing through Pfizer.
- 14:44Then like, even like I was helping one of my roommates and
- 14:49one of my best friend's to this day, he was the manager for
- 14:52basketball. And so when I was going to get
- 14:54Masters even like, so you'll love this Dick Bennett.
- 14:58He was, he was the coach and his son.
- 15:01Now, is that Virginia forget his first name, but I know they just
- 15:05went to message a few years ago and he was assistant and they
- 15:09were like, well, you know, maybe you want to BJ for basketball,
- 15:11you know, or something like that.
- 15:13And so ahead and weird kind of different offers.
- 15:15But by then I kind of was like, pretty much said, you know, just
- 15:19I'm I'm going to go to med school, do all this.
- 15:23And then I went out for track because I was there, I was
- 15:26getting another Masters. I was, you know, kind of
- 15:29training for the trials and 2000, like once you come out and
- 15:33help track, you know, and so I got to work with Jerry
- 15:35Schumacher and I get to be his GA for, you know, cross-country
- 15:39and stuff like that. And obviously, in the spring,
- 15:42the fall and I traveled with the cross country, team, drove the
- 15:45buses. And, you know, for the Vans and
- 15:48all that kind of stuff and Jerry is amazing to me and just
- 15:51watching his success, right? On was like, wow, unbelievable.
- 15:55And yeah, I mean obviously, he's hella director track and field
- 15:58at Oregon and the soundtrack was doing was Successful programs.
- 16:02And so then I, you know, was like, okay well let me try this
- 16:08track thing and it was kind of that late thing.
- 16:11I'm like, high jumping where it was late.
- 16:12I got into it, I was like, oh God, I love this.
- 16:15And I'm great at it but because of my, you know, nice thirst for
- 16:21knowledge, I went, that's when I, you know, was like, okay, I
- 16:25need to coaching education. I needed to learn something else
- 16:27besides the Wisconsin way to do things well, so that Was the
- 16:31level coaching education and everything else.
- 16:34I mean it's quite interesting because you know the track that
- 16:37you kind of had set yourself on since 6 years old by the way,
- 16:41was to do this amazing thing, you know, become a surgeon.
- 16:44I mean there, I mean Good. Golly, that's just amazing,
- 16:47right? Me, who has the skill set for
- 16:49that very, very small percentile of people that have the passion
- 16:53to do it and then can actually go out and do the education and
- 16:56the experience part of it, what was it?
- 16:58So you're on this high-level track Internships are in front
- 17:02of you and you go help out the cross-country team, which I
- 17:04thought was interesting, not necessarily you didn't mention
- 17:07the track team your time on the cross country team, what was it
- 17:10about coaching? That was like, oh, maybe I
- 17:12should give this a try. It just, you know, it was one of
- 17:15those things almost like it felt like a, you know, comfortable
- 17:18pair of shoes. It just fit, you know, it really
- 17:21well and then it was but then I knew the limitations of my
- 17:25ability so I knew that like I don't really know a lot about.
- 17:30I mean, I can tell You the the macro micro all that kind of
- 17:34stuff about the cellular development and everything else,
- 17:38but I don't know much, I mean, I took what one physiology class.
- 17:41I never took an exercise fitness class.
- 17:43I never I mean I took physics but I never took biomechanics
- 17:46class. So I sat there and was like, I
- 17:48need to know more about this and so, you know, and nutty comb
- 17:53who, you know, most winning coach and, you know, Ed's
- 17:56amazing in the Hall of Fame and everything.
- 17:58He's, you know, I remember, His quote don't get into coaching
- 18:02for the money you're going to have literally like your if you
- 18:06want to be a doctor you're going to make you know how about you
- 18:10make. And if you be attract coach,
- 18:12you're going to make the never make six figures.
- 18:15This is closed and how things have changed, right?
- 18:19You know. And so for me it was like, I was
- 18:21like, you know what, though, I rather make fifty sixty thousand
- 18:24dollars as a limit but enjoy my job every day it did instead.
- 18:31Ed of, you know, doing something where, and I talked to my
- 18:34friends, you know, cardiologist or the people, they hate it.
- 18:36They some of them are out of it. They found other ways to get out
- 18:39of it and some of them, you know, kind of whatever and not
- 18:41to put their business out, you know.
- 18:43We're talking about multiple marriages.
- 18:45Yeah, they have money. But it's they don't enjoy their
- 18:49job or another Avenue to do their job.
- 18:52That's not practical. So, so, you know, I think I
- 18:56definitely, I never case of the Mondays, you know, it's like we
- 18:59always say, if you do something, We never work a professional day
- 19:02of your life. I have done plenty of jobs that
- 19:05don't allow, you know, that our jobs and but professionally, I
- 19:10haven't worked, you know, single day.
- 19:11And so from that point on I knew, okay, I want to be a
- 19:15coach, I love this and you know, and it allowed me to train
- 19:19through 2000. Take a finished 7th.
- 19:22The trials had a terrible competition, but you know, end
- 19:25up jumping, you know, 76 that here.
- 19:27And then it's kind of like, okay.
- 19:29I want to do this coaching thing.
- 19:31And so, then that's when I took the job at Northridge and Cal
- 19:33State Northridge, and I was actually supposed to home he'd
- 19:36be like a g, a, and they just threw me and, you know, with the
- 19:41sharks, I'm 24 years old, and coaching 23 year olds, you know.
- 19:45And but I was like, okay, I'm going to get a masters in
- 19:48exercise. Fizzing, I can expand.
- 19:50So, you know, we had this conversation earlier, I remember
- 19:53listening to Dan path, and he was co-teaching, local three
- 19:57than I was in my second year of getting my masters and day.
- 20:01Talk. And I was like this guy needs to
- 20:03teach my my my good because I don't understand half of what he
- 20:07said. You know, it it was amazing and
- 20:11I was just so you know I've been I'm opposite.
- 20:15Most people I'm not a poopoo guy.
- 20:17I'm a guy who loves new information even information
- 20:21even information, that's not the norm.
- 20:24And so even for myself, I probably made decisions that
- 20:28were like I don't want to I kind of want to create My own path
- 20:31kind of thing. And so the North Ridge was a
- 20:34great time. I mean, I had made mistakes, you
- 20:37know, I made mistakes as a coach and maybe even technically and
- 20:39made them from kind of whatever. But I had, you know, Don stram,
- 20:43it's another, you STLCC a Hall of Fame.
- 20:45He allowed me to really grow while I was there and make
- 20:49mistakes and learn but I wasn't, you know, like okay, hey, go
- 20:53take the job at Florida as a young coach make mistakes and
- 20:56then you get fired. It was more like make mistakes
- 20:59and learn and We build your craft.
- 21:01And so for four years, when I was in Norfolk, I was getting
- 21:05all my certifications. I got my level 3.
- 21:08When you from usatf, I got my cscs while I was there.
- 21:12I got my USA weightlifting certification so even though
- 21:15they didn't pay me really that. Well, they did pay for all my
- 21:19certifications at the time. I got to work with Jeff McCauley
- 21:23who ended up being very successful college coach when
- 21:25mcatee who I are. One of the most it's a shame
- 21:29he's not in college he's one of The smartest humans I've ever
- 21:33met a keys. He is, he's brilliant, you know,
- 21:36and I, he really like kind of took me under his wing when I
- 21:40was there and I learned a lot because I mean, he basically
- 21:45like he has Masters and all that kind of stuff.
- 21:47But yeah. He's a very like good access to
- 21:52those guys. And so I learned a lot from him
- 21:54while I was there. Let's let's stay right there at
- 21:56Northridge real quick. Jeremy.
- 21:59What I'm interested in its In the way you talked about
- 22:02coaching track and field and like this challenge of like, oh,
- 22:05I need to learn more about it. Like I felt like it sounds like
- 22:08it sounds like you kind of see a challenge and you like to go,
- 22:11learn it kind of take it, heads on, whether you can do it or not
- 22:14right today? That's not going to stop you.
- 22:17I mean, that's, you know, even we'll talk a little bit about it
- 22:19with my own online business and all that kind of stuff bag
- 22:21during covid. I thought he took classes to
- 22:24create an online business or making my website and doing
- 22:28stuff. And so, for me, it's It's always
- 22:31like okay if I don't know something, I will talk to people
- 22:34who know more about it and I will also read up and study.
- 22:37It's just, you know, at the end of the day, I think really, what
- 22:41as coaches, we are teachers and some are more in the teaching
- 22:46aspect than others. And so I definitely, you know,
- 22:50teachings probably at the Forefront of my coaching, right?
- 22:54You know, I went from learning this stuff to then, you know, if
- 22:57you look I really helped rewrite the coaching education One.
- 23:01And then I just got finished last winter rewriting level 34 I
- 23:07Waf for the horizontal jumps. And so you know it was also one
- 23:12of those things, you know, you talked abou and was like hey
- 23:14what can I do? If it was like just give back to
- 23:16the sport. That's the thing that I've been,
- 23:20you know, kind of doing and stuff like that but you know
- 23:22then there's a time where now I'm like, okay I've given back
- 23:25to sport a given, now I got to pay you start taking care of
- 23:28myself and things like that but Northridge It was a fantastic
- 23:31time, I think, you know, it was cool because I was at Wisconsin,
- 23:35which is a power 5 and has, you know, endless amounts of support
- 23:38to Northridge where, you know, I mean, I don't even want to know
- 23:42what our budget book. But it was really amazing on how
- 23:45the creativity starts to flow because when you don't have the
- 23:50money, or the, you know, shop to make Cloud boxes.
- 23:54Uh-huh. You go.
- 23:55And you make them. Uh-huh.
- 23:57So, I made ramps, I made by Obama.
- 24:01I mean, I spent so many, you know, I'm getting a masters and
- 24:04coaching it in a teaching classes in the Kinesiology
- 24:08department, but I literally spent a lot of free weekends
- 24:13building stuff. So plyo boxes, you know, we
- 24:18built by remember Glenn and I we built with the space support out
- 24:23of wood and fencing and stuff like that.
- 24:26So that would stay off the ground and not wet things like
- 24:29that. And so we I spent so much time.
- 24:32Like that, that northward you put the creativity was uh, yeah.
- 24:37I was wondering, you know, and you were coached by a superb.
- 24:41High-level coach out. There was one of these guys that
- 24:43kind of can coach it all Mark Napier.
- 24:46But as an athlete, you know, it's a little different because
- 24:49there's you not necessarily. Now, you might have because of
- 24:51your kind of Bend towards education and learning not
- 24:55necessarily just doing what coach tells me.
- 24:57I want to kind of know why I'm doing this.
- 24:59But how did you find that? Position you go from athlete and
- 25:02you're still an athlete. Isn't regards to your training
- 25:04for the trials and you essays and things like that.
- 25:06But now you're in charge of a group.
- 25:08So now, instead of you going out and doing the high jump drills
- 25:11and speed and acceleration drills, now your programming,
- 25:15how did you find that transition and what maybe you struggled
- 25:18with, as you first started writing programmatically, I
- 25:21think it I think it was the level of the athlete and
- 25:26individuality I think I was conscious and kid be trained
- 25:30differently. Than you would train a kid at a
- 25:32Cal State Northridge, because we didn't really emphasize indoors.
- 25:35Uh-huh. Because we competed liked mpsf,
- 25:37and I think, even at Northridge, you know, we really like, you
- 25:41know, from where we were there. I think we were really good
- 25:44conference level team, till then we became kind of a national
- 25:47level, kind of, you know, Hannah step kind of kid, I mean, even
- 25:52though he, you know, and he coached a national champion, my
- 25:55second year, high jumper and then he got busted for weed
- 25:57after and but, you know, he's still on.
- 26:00They won the high jump, you know, but wasn't performing
- 26:04hansung but it was a lesson to learn as a coach of like, wow,
- 26:07this is, you know, is kind of crazy.
- 26:09And then years later de Chao Andrews won the long jump and
- 26:12then shortly after that had a another National Champion
- 26:18though, I'm forgetting his name right now.
- 26:19But, you know, you from from a program where literally, when I
- 26:22got there, I was like, oh, don't recruit these people.
- 26:24They'll never come to not only getting them and then having
- 26:27kids, you know, to build that and I take, you know, A lot of
- 26:32pride in that every program we went to, we want.
- 26:35So when I went as an athlete to Wisconsin, we hadn't won a
- 26:38conference Championship and how everybody years that we want, is
- 26:41that right? Oh, wow.
- 26:42I mean, it was, it was a while, is probably the 80s and then we
- 26:45won basically, you know, from that point we won three out of
- 26:49four. And then there's a class at a
- 26:51help recruit, why was a.j. there that won four out of four.
- 26:54Wow. And when the national indoor
- 26:56championship and so it was really cool to be a part of
- 26:59that. And then At Northridge, you know
- 27:02we kind of went conference here there.
- 27:03It's a pretty much we dominated the conference and then started
- 27:06having that we had the most national qualifiers that we ever
- 27:10had. And you know, from a team that
- 27:12had want Darcy REO, like and she was like a national champion T2
- 27:17way back in the day and you know, we had some good people
- 27:20way back in the sixties and seventies because you look at
- 27:23the Northridge tree, I mean you got art benegas and Coach
- 27:27Frazier, you have you have Bobby Kersey, you know, I mean, book
- 27:33little thing people don't know is, you know, that flow Florence
- 27:40Griffith. She went to Northridge before
- 27:42she transferred to UCLA, so she's hurt.
- 27:44She's that right Valerie. Briscoe hooks was it is it was a
- 27:48freshman. And then Bobby got the job at
- 27:50UCLA and all transferred, but it was deep.
- 27:53Wow. Yeah.
- 27:54So even the coaching tree is amazing at, you know,
- 27:57Northridge. I mean you had a, who's the
- 27:59longtime coach it Lucy when they were winning national
- 28:02championships Linda no no not bill.
- 28:05Yeah, a lot Bill. Well yeah, well yeah at
- 28:09Northridge so it's you go back, you know, Jeff Perkins at
- 28:13Irvine, you know, you just go back.
- 28:16What's his name? Yeah, Cowper at Louisville.
- 28:19Oh, that's right. Yeah, you know, even Raina had a
- 28:23cup of coffee writer at so you just it's crazy to see how many
- 28:29coaches, you know. Came through kind of the
- 28:32Northridge thing. And so you know, John to God who
- 28:35I work with and I did, he was he was Northridge grad so you know
- 28:40Avery Anderson. He was he was he got his first
- 28:44Northridge. So there's a big kind of
- 28:47coaching tree from Northridge and there's a talented athletes.
- 28:51I mean, in other words it was like, you know, it was constant.
- 28:53I was kind of back in the day you could do recruiting a little
- 28:55bit as a ga and stuff and it's crazy how much rules would
- 28:59change now, but now, At Northridge, it was like all the
- 29:03kids live within two hours of Campus.
- 29:05Hmm. And you know, we got a couple.
- 29:07We got a kid here and there from Colorado, Arizona or something
- 29:10like that, but mostly kids were there and they blend, I think
- 29:14had some connections with Canada.
- 29:15So you get kind of a kind of get kids there from time to time,
- 29:18but in Northridge was amazing, and it really grew and my
- 29:21commitment is, I'm honorable, and I'm committed.
- 29:24So I, I told myself even though I finished my Master's after two
- 29:28years or two and a half years, I made sure I Stayed there for
- 29:31you. I wanted one whole like
- 29:33coaching, you know, you're not that far removed from having one
- 29:37toe into the going to medical school.
- 29:40Route did this time at Northridge solidify?
- 29:43Like oh yeah, this is actually why I was put here on Earth.
- 29:46I'm supposed to be a coach. I think, the first two weeks of
- 29:50going out to coaching it, just felt like I just felt this
- 29:56energy. I felt, you know, is like,
- 30:00Sitting there studying for 45 hours because I'll tell myself
- 30:03I'm intelligent, but I'm not like super gifted.
- 30:06I'm not one of those people who can sit there and read something
- 30:09one time and then regurgitate everything, you know, it takes
- 30:12me a little bit longer, I can retain it, but it takes me
- 30:15longer. I do have to study, I have to
- 30:17work at what I do. And so, but like coaching, like,
- 30:22I'd go and I'd go coaching, someone would tell me something,
- 30:25and it's like, it just stuck. Or I shower, I look at Thinking
- 30:30interview or what about doing it this way and it was almost like,
- 30:33you know, kind of like, wow, that's that's a good way to
- 30:37think of it, you know, that's creative and so I think that was
- 30:43in that's kind of what, you know.
- 30:45I look at and then I took things from my own career and said this
- 30:48is what I liked about my career and this is things I didn't
- 30:51like. So let me coorporate this and
- 30:54have that little bit of influence on it, but it was one
- 30:57of those things have just like, you know, I go.
- 30:59Back burned, a right ahead burn was about progression, and that
- 31:03was probably one of the big things I really, really, really
- 31:07took away from him. Was that progression everything
- 31:10and doing things that, you know, make sense.
- 31:12So my rule to thumb, always is if we're doing something and I
- 31:16can't tell you why we're doing it, you don't have to do it,
- 31:20interesting. Everything's the bill to a, you
- 31:22know, a bigger platform or whatever needs to go to.
- 31:26Well, I love, you know, it's I'd say it's rare.
- 31:29In life that we find that thing that we were put on Earth for
- 31:33and actually find it to go into, right?
- 31:35Like, there's I think there's a amazing football players that
- 31:38actually were supposed to be doctors.
- 31:39In fact, what's the the guy you went to Florida State?
- 31:42Yeah, Malin real enroll I'm sure.
- 31:45I'm yeah, we roll We Roll. Yeah, I mean the guy was you
- 31:48know, a Rhodes scholar and it's like oh thank goodness.
- 31:51He found that because he couldn't play in the NFL, which
- 31:53no shame on that, but he's going to, he's making medical
- 31:56histories. Helping the medical field.
- 31:58So we it's hard for us too. Sometimes fine for a lot of
- 32:01different reasons. It's interesting to me that you
- 32:03know, you had and have the ability to become a doctor but
- 32:07thank goodness. You also be had the ability to
- 32:10high jump at a high enough level that you could go to a Wisconsin
- 32:13and find this coaching path as well.
- 32:15You could have been a 6-2 6-3 high jumper which hey that's
- 32:18still. I thought I can't jump one foot
- 32:20to 143, right and never got into that coaching side of it and
- 32:24been a doctor, which again is Noble.
- 32:25But it's you were put on this Earth to be a coach.
- 32:27And so, you know, in that Taste those first two weeks, it was
- 32:31like, oh my, where is this bin? Like this is where I'm here.
- 32:35So how where did you go into Northridge?
- 32:38And you did an amazing job with the, you know, the crew guys had
- 32:41their, coaching's were just fantastic.
- 32:44What was the next step? How did now that you, okay, I'm
- 32:46a coach. What was the kind of the next
- 32:48progression? What was your thought in regards
- 32:49to coaching? As far as a career?
- 32:51Yeah, you know, and so I definitely was into coaching
- 32:55actually, it was crazy so at Northridge you had to learn how
- 32:58to survive, right? And so, So, and that's not, you
- 33:01know, kind of it. I mean, all of us have spent
- 33:04thousands. I've spent hundreds of thousands
- 33:07of dollars giving back to the sport in different ways, you
- 33:10know, whether it's equipment or, you know, just different ways
- 33:16you find ways. And so, at the end of the day,
- 33:20it was funny. I remember my last year at
- 33:21Northridge I was paid 40 Grand. And that's like 2004-5.
- 33:26That's a lot of money. You know, for guy who I think my
- 33:28first year there I met 2000's, you know, and but what happened
- 33:34was, I actually started training on the side, like something like
- 33:38actors and some like athletes and stuff because that's the
- 33:42connection you have on there. And so it was interesting from
- 33:47that standpoint because I started to see kind of a new
- 33:51light of things. And so I you know, I got all my
- 33:54certifications that I wanted to do and because it was kind of
- 33:58lucrative from a cat A standpoint, you know it was
- 34:01almost like I was not quite double that but you know I was
- 34:05probably making you know, seven 75 thousand dollars and so I had
- 34:10a great life, I was living in Southern California, you know,
- 34:1245 minutes from where I grew up. And unfortunately, what happened
- 34:16was my mom passed away when I was there and it was kind of one
- 34:19of those, you know, my story. I was adopted.
- 34:22I was a son of a military man in Korea.
- 34:26I'm half Korean and stuff like that.
- 34:27So I think that's another Kind of Avenue for me, where I always
- 34:33feel humbled by everything because I could be homeless, in
- 34:36Korea, you know, something or whatever.
- 34:39And so when my adopted mom had passed away, I think it was kind
- 34:43of one of those times. It was like the perfect time to
- 34:45leave the most. It was like, I kind of want a
- 34:48new experience emotionally, obviously, her and I were so
- 34:51close and so it was kind of that.
- 34:54All right, I've done this smaller kind of thing.
- 34:58I got a few Got quite a few offers when I was at Northridge
- 35:01because of, you know, the success we had.
- 35:03But again, I wanted to be there for four years and I was leaving
- 35:07good athletes. But, you know, it was one of
- 35:09those things we always going to leave great athletes.
- 35:12And so, I decided, you know, Martin Smith, I knew him because
- 35:16he was at Wisconsin with me and then, right?
- 35:18Yeah. And I really liked the fact that
- 35:22Oklahoma's jumps, didn't hadn't been established.
- 35:27I, I liked a facility. They were kind of a sleeping
- 35:30giant kind of thing. And I thought, okay, we could do
- 35:33some really cool stuff. And so I took the job at
- 35:36Oklahoma and, you know, in the rest is history there, you know,
- 35:40had, you know, national champions, you know, we hadn't
- 35:43won a conference Championship and 20-something years.
- 35:45We went to. I was there when that had done
- 35:48absolutely zero, zip zilch and the help the class, they ended
- 35:51up finishing, fourth at Nationals, you know, and stuff.
- 35:54And, you know, there which will contain a boom.
- 35:57I got to work with I actually got to help recruit Jeremy said
- 36:02Barry, who's all right with it? I would say.
- 36:05Yeah, because he was a junior college kid.
- 36:08I think from Arizona, I forget, but yeah, I was there when
- 36:13Jeremy was there and it's pretty cool to see him kind of how
- 36:15successful he is. And then, you know, Bobby about
- 36:21this last name is Wisconsin guy and he was at know where Bob
- 36:24was? He is he a cal done?
- 36:29Forget Bobby's last name but you know he distance guy.
- 36:32Yeah, just not Lockhart Lockhart.
- 36:34Yeah. So he even live with me.
- 36:37Why was there? And then obviously will be
- 36:39Martin Mark Napier was there Jeff Perkins Daniel Boone gosh
- 36:46I'm forgetting. Oh and Brian blue trick?
- 36:49Yeah of course. Yeah so it was just it was a
- 36:53time of like a Okay, this is kind of cool because now we're
- 36:59at the national level. We have some we have that and
- 37:03you know the ad and when a couple Big 12 Championship.
- 37:05So, you know, get a trophy at Nationals to sit there and be
- 37:09able to be a part of that. That was my kind of take off
- 37:12more in a minute, one-time cash. We do the triple jump group.
- 37:15You know, even before will was there we were big Catalyst on
- 37:18winning our first championship, when we had, who scored long
- 37:22job, you know, scoring high jump to and we went one.
- 37:24Two, one, two. Six in the five or something
- 37:28down the triple jump and you know had multiple Walters
- 37:32Catholics everything so it was a fun time.
- 37:34It was a time for I learned a lot and I also learned kind of
- 37:40that the old college system wasn't for me kind of and so
- 37:47after about the fifth year I just was like I'm spending.
- 37:51I was recruiting coordinator. So I was working football and
- 37:53track and and I'm sitting there going like God.
- 37:57We're not really. We got, you know, eight hours
- 37:59and then get 20 hours and it was really hard to clue kind of what
- 38:04I wanted to do in that time. And, you know, NCAA rules, I
- 38:07want to get into the stuff that, you know, was ridiculous back in
- 38:11the day, but my dad got really sick after five years and it was
- 38:17just time to go and I'm a Southern California guy.
- 38:20No, thanks Norman, Oklahoma, but being a single guy in Norman,
- 38:24Oklahoma is just wasn't for me and and And I came back, no job.
- 38:29You know people offered I got offers and people and wanted me
- 38:33to go there, but I was just like, you know, I'm gonna go
- 38:35home and take care of my dad. I had some NFL and Major League
- 38:38Baseball guys. I was working with and, you
- 38:42know, really was like, okay, I'm going to spend this time, you
- 38:44know, taking care of my family, my dad what specifically well
- 38:48that's what, let's pause right there for a second gym.
- 38:50Because a couple things, you brought up that we need to
- 38:52discuss a little bit for the first of all, I'd be remiss if
- 38:55going back to when you're at now.
- 38:56Ridge, how you? And I actually met.
- 38:59So, you've heard me if you listen to the podcast at all,
- 39:03you've hopefully listen to the booth schexnayder podcast again.
- 39:06Number one podcast we've had. So if you haven't listened to
- 39:08it, press pause here. Go listen to it because it's
- 39:10well worth. And we're going to bring up
- 39:11something that Bou Said, based on what Jeremy said here in a
- 39:14second. But so it was 20, it was right
- 39:17in the middle when I was in at Ball State.
- 39:20So I was there O2 and O3, so it had been the summer of o2 Guru
- 39:25to. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 39:26Certification says so too. Okay, yeah, so I drove out from
- 39:30Muncie. Indiana to ball star to Boise
- 39:32State, beautiful campus, by the way, to do jumps, and it's funny
- 39:36because I was reluctantly to do jumps because I was a Sprint's
- 39:39hurdles coach. So I was supposed to take Sprint
- 39:41Turtles and might corn says, hey, I'm sorry, it's full.
- 39:44But we got a position in the jumps and you'll get a lot out
- 39:46of it and I was like, huh, I guess I have to coach jumps here
- 39:48at Ball State, so I guess I'll do it.
- 39:51Thank good. I mean, like, you talk about
- 39:52things that just, you know, I thought it was the worst thing
- 39:54in the world because I wasn't going to do Sprints and hurdles.
- 39:56But Oh my gosh, it was the best thing ever.
- 39:58I did jumps and in the jumps you were there as well.
- 40:02There is this guinea pig every time.
- 40:04Boo who was the teaching wanted to show?
- 40:06We'd go out to the track and you wanted to show hot progressions
- 40:10or single leg jump progressions. It was like hey Jeremy get over
- 40:14here and show us XYZ and you were, I mean you had a heck of a
- 40:18workout that week my friend because you did it all.
- 40:21But what an amazing time with boo is a teacher and I think,
- 40:25Ron and came over her Helpers. I think they were kind of
- 40:29learning to teach, so they were helping out.
- 40:31It was just a fantastic time for coaching Ed and for track in
- 40:35general, and you were right there at the.
- 40:37I mean, you are young. Pup you were, you know, you were
- 40:38still jumping for crying out loud during that time.
- 40:42Yep. I still was like 25 26.
- 40:44Yeah. Kind of training.
- 40:45And yeah it was funny cotton Wayne was in there too.
- 40:48So I knew I was missing him. Yep.
- 40:50It's so like I just you know I remember you know all of us
- 40:54coming up and together to see Different coaches at different
- 40:58places is, is pretty, is pretty amazing and so, yeah, I know
- 41:02that Boise State. It was crazy because we drove up
- 41:06from from Southern, California, me and Glenn.
- 41:10Mcatee, and we had missive Glenn and I had misinformation.
- 41:16So we're sitting there and we got there and we're just like,
- 41:19we went up to do some fishing, two sounds in there, out of the
- 41:23river. And we see a coach and the coach
- 41:25goes, hey, you know, It's got up.
- 41:27What do you think? We're here for the coaching at.
- 41:29He's like yeah, started, you know, today and we're like What
- 41:33He was an alumni so he didn't have to do over.
- 41:37I try thing until like the next day, but I was supposed to be in
- 41:39class, I showed up and I'm like, boo.
- 41:41I'm so sorry. Like I was a misinformation, I
- 41:43thought, you know, whatever, he's like, I just make up for
- 41:46it, kind of whatever you do now. Now, when I ask you to do
- 41:50something, you got to do it, this makes so much more sense.
- 41:56Now, Yeah. So so there, you know, so that I
- 41:59was like here's the most, here's the most non slacker person in
- 42:03the world slacker because you're out fishing.
- 42:05That's great. I love it.
- 42:06Yeah. And so we didn't know if it was
- 42:08just because Glenn was an Alum. So, you know, he loves started
- 42:11wait week. And so booze, like, well, when I
- 42:14asked you, who helped you got to help and I'm like anything you
- 42:17need this sir? Yes, sir.
- 42:18That's right. That's right.
- 42:20Well, something that you said that kind of sparked a memory
- 42:23from Booze episode with us back in.
- 42:27Blake 2021 is he talked about you mentioned about when you
- 42:31leave your tunnel leaving Northridge and even you know
- 42:34when the time was up at Oklahoma as well that you know, you're
- 42:38always going to leave athletes. Good athletes or athletes.
- 42:41You see a lot of potential and and that gets some people hung
- 42:43up sometimes, right? And boo had in a really amazing
- 42:48like like when he said this, I'm going to go to here in a second,
- 42:50but when he said it I looked and I was like, oh boo, you're not
- 42:52supposed to say that. Meaning like the oh that's that
- 42:55hurts. Like people when Say like this.
- 42:57And so what boo was talking about because we were talking
- 42:59about coaching is a profession and always working to get more
- 43:03pay. Not that money is the be-all
- 43:05end-all. But you, you have family and
- 43:07hobbies and you want to retire one day and things like that.
- 43:10And so he was really riffing on this part of it, because he has
- 43:13such great experience here and he said about, you know, leaving
- 43:16athletes and, you know, I'm the best at coach for them.
- 43:19He goes, well, how do you know if you really are supposed to be
- 43:21doing everything for the athlete?
- 43:22How do you know you leave in a better?
- 43:23Coach won't come in for them and that's I was like, oh, you know,
- 43:28we're not supposed to say that like we don't have to say,
- 43:30another coach could actually be better for our athletes, but you
- 43:33know that humility that he has, I might not be the best coach
- 43:37for this person. You got to kind of think about
- 43:39that as you're working towards your career, that hey, it's
- 43:42okay, there's always going to be athletes and maybe the next
- 43:44coach is better for them. Yeah, no, it's true.
- 43:46I mean I've learned you know later just because I've had
- 43:49success with the athletes I've had doesn't necessarily mean
- 43:52that I'd be successful across the board and you know, I mean
- 43:54I'll say it like some of the Things I did that.
- 44:00We're kind of. Like, if I look back at some of
- 44:02the mistakes I made in my professional later career was
- 44:05I'd come off this hot year where, you know, we had an
- 44:08amazing year and then I would take two or three more athletes
- 44:11and it took away from the quality of the work that I did.
- 44:15So ended up almost like kind of a, you know, the tide went down
- 44:20because of the fact that, you know, first of all, you know
- 44:24coaching like a will or Brittany.
- 44:26Your woowoo or, you know, whoever kind of work with their
- 44:30own 1% of 1%, you know, so what they do is different and then
- 44:35you know, having athletes that come in, it's like, okay, wait a
- 44:40minute, you're not really getting paid by them and they're
- 44:45not even if you get them to a certain level it's not helping
- 44:49you, right? And I hate to be cold and
- 44:51chalice like that. But you also have a job to those
- 44:55high-level athletes to Sure that they're taken care of and every
- 44:59person that you bring in that takes time away from them and
- 45:03be, you know, that and I've had success, I've had success, I've
- 45:07had great athletes, but I don't necessarily was I the best coach
- 45:11or was I this the best situation for them and was it fair to my
- 45:15other athletes by bringing them into and so and that was, you
- 45:20know, the college thing. It wasn't, you know, wasn't
- 45:23anything against College, it wasn't anything like that.
- 45:25It was really more of a personal Personal I want to take care of
- 45:28my family kind of thing. It was a good transition kind of
- 45:32thing and then you know, everything kind of took off from
- 45:36there and that's when I really feel like it's like if I have
- 45:41levels of coaching, it was like, okay, I started coaching and I
- 45:45did things. I went to my level 2 and did
- 45:48remember we had to do three level twos and then write a
- 45:50thing. Yeah, yeah.
- 45:52I hate putting this out here, but I will tell my court.
- 45:54I wrote The Thing. They made the transition and
- 45:57that whole thing with usatf and you STLCC a went through and
- 46:01never got my little three certification.
- 46:03I mean I ended up getting it later on again but I'll
- 46:05recognize they still owe me my job sir.
- 46:07Yeah. But so I felt like that was the
- 46:11first time where I kind of almost like a wild into another
- 46:14higher level code. And when well then let's keep
- 46:18pausing their whole lot because because I kind of, in my
- 46:21knowledge of you knew that this was a stepping up to a different
- 46:25level as well. So hang On for there a couple
- 46:27more questions to lead us into their.
- 46:29I'm curious about your own athleticism, you know, you
- 46:31jumped as high as seven foot six.
- 46:33When did you? And how did you make the
- 46:36decision that you were done being the athlete and focusing
- 46:39on the coaching side? Well God.
- 46:42Did that for me? Oh, is that right?
- 46:45Yeah. And I was like, it was in 2004
- 46:58and I felt like pan, I have the maturity to finally make this
- 47:02team because like in 2000, I didn't have the maturity because
- 47:05making the team with end all and be all for me, the 2004.
- 47:08I was like, this isn't going to make me back.
- 47:10This is just, you know, I had the maturity, I had the
- 47:13physical, I was healthy and I was making a great run and even
- 47:16my athletes were like, damn coach were out there.
- 47:18It's out there, it's seven. Am walking to class, and we see
- 47:21you working out every morning and it was good for them to see
- 47:24that, but I was bounding Him and I tore my achilles and it was
- 47:29kind of like, okay, the now and it wasn't the end.
- 47:32All be all like I said, you know, talk about serendipitous,
- 47:36I tore, my achilles, my mom took a week off and took care of me
- 47:41and we spent this quality time had the conversation.
- 47:44You know, you talked about you interviewed Boo.
- 47:45And it was like a thank you to all the coaches and thank you
- 47:48for everything. It's the same conversation.
- 47:50You want to have with your parents where you sitting there.
- 47:52Thank you. Thank you for adopting me.
- 47:54Yeah. You for making my life better.
- 47:56Thank you. Believing in me when I didn't
- 47:58want to go to med school and be a coach in that thought I was
- 48:01going to be the best coach out, there we go, because because of
- 48:04whatever. And so we spent that week
- 48:07together and then you know, I said earlier my mom passed away
- 48:10in less than a year later. No, I tear.
- 48:12My achilles 50,000 hundred times they absolutely meet with my
- 48:16mom. So it is amazing.
- 48:18How life works. So good, certain things happen
- 48:21and so that was probably the best week of my life because we
- 48:25got a habit come Inflation. Got to spend time with my mom
- 48:28and, and little did I know less than a year later, she passed
- 48:32away. And so so it was it was, it was
- 48:37awesome. I mean, honestly, I can't, I
- 48:39could never, you know, talk about how important was, but for
- 48:43me, I kind of went through everything, you know, as a high
- 48:45jumper 74 came really, really easy to me.
- 48:49And then I struggled in college, you know, I struggled
- 48:52academically, I struggled not academically from that
- 48:55standpoint, just managing Academics managing my sleep
- 48:59managing my training. I mean, I started triple jumping
- 49:02long jumping. I think you know what it looked
- 49:04like when legal 24 and a half and 25 when dated and I tripped
- 49:09up like 49 something later high or something like that and and
- 49:14and then you know I jumped 76 and so even though you know,
- 49:19multi-time All-American it definitely wasn't what my
- 49:23expectations were. So I almost fell 7-5, 7-6 7-5.
- 49:26The quarters in high school and I didn't see that bar again,
- 49:29until I was a junior. High.
- 49:32Jump is so frustrating. Yeah, and it was one of the so
- 49:35unique. I use this all the time.
- 49:38It's like, and I think that's kind of why I got into coaching.
- 49:41Is that I went from this unbelievable athlete, who's
- 49:43super successful and believed in myself to having a lot of doubt
- 49:47and then believing in myself again.
- 49:49And so it was in and I use this a lot for I had a lot of success
- 49:54with kids who just graduated college.
- 49:56Coming to me as post collegians will be later on in my career
- 50:00and people ask that and I'm like, because if your college in
- 50:03high school I was a, I was red and in college they wanted me to
- 50:07be blue. So they took me from red to blue
- 50:10right away and what they should have done is they should have
- 50:13taken me on the Spectrum and made me a little, you know, a
- 50:16red, you know, reddish purplish red a little bit more purple
- 50:22than of purple blue and then eventually I get to the blue but
- 50:24taking me from read all the way to bleep.
- 50:26Ooh, right away was a disaster. And so I tell college coaches
- 50:30and I tell, you know, post-collegiate coaches, don't
- 50:33forget that, that spectrum and so, if you can take the spectrum
- 50:37of taking the kid from whatever, I mean, I was a kid who didn't
- 50:40do much in high school so the warm-up for me, was the hardest
- 50:44thing I've ever done. All right, so no throwing in
- 50:49weights and class and all this other stuff was just too much
- 50:53for me. Right?
- 50:54There were system and all that. Not my work.
- 50:56Perfect. All right, work.
- 50:57My butt off and it didn't and it didn't, you know, frustrated me.
- 51:01But my body just couldn't handle the conditions.
- 51:05I struggle. And so it took me a couple years
- 51:07to, you know, go from that. And I think that but that helped
- 51:13me understand it understand the sport and then it made me a
- 51:16better Coach because I understood that so taking high
- 51:19school kids from different kind of training ages.
- 51:22Because you learn, we learn about training age but we don't
- 51:24really understand what that means.
- 51:26Is until you're in it and we talked about individualized
- 51:30training, but then we throw everybody together from day one
- 51:33on the same warm up. Like you pointed out, we don't
- 51:35think about what their background was and athleticism
- 51:38and you write you throwing the other sides of the academic and
- 51:40academic stress, the being away from home being on your own.
- 51:44Yeah, it's that's yeah, that's interesting.
- 51:46So we're up to write up Brothers, we go leave from
- 51:51Oklahoma to go back home. But before we take that next
- 51:54step, you know, Like you are what we need for the sport in
- 51:59regards to the things that we don't necessarily always pay
- 52:01attention to for right or wrong. And it's for me, it's probably
- 52:04always, right? We highlight the coaches and, of
- 52:07course, the athletes. But we only talk about the great
- 52:09coaches at this University and this these private coaches, you
- 52:12mentioned Bobby Kersey and things like that, and that's all
- 52:15good. But there's this underlying area
- 52:18of track and field. There's several underlying areas
- 52:20of track and field that have to get done.
- 52:21You know, people have to process the teams for Team USA.
- 52:23We don't necessarily always talk about the work load and
- 52:27paperwork and all that kind of stuff.
- 52:28Well, there's also the people and you've alluded to it here, a
- 52:31little bit in regards to the coaching education, which of
- 52:34course is huge for you as it was instrumental, have talked about
- 52:36it many many times here on the podcast.
- 52:38I wouldn't be who I am today even not as a coach.
- 52:41If it weren't for coaching education, my give back what I
- 52:44taught, you know, close to about 30 level ones, I was kind of my
- 52:46way of giving back, where are you, as we're up to that
- 52:51Oklahoma time? Where are you in the spectrum of
- 52:53coaching education? You've already talked about, you
- 52:55know, you've done the Twos and USA W's and cscs is things like
- 52:59that. Where are you in regards to
- 53:03curriculum writing or teaching? Are you doing any of that at
- 53:06this point? Yeah, so so when I got to
- 53:08Oklahoma, gosh, so there was a shift in the coaching.
- 53:16I don't want to say when I was at Oklahoma, so it's got to be
- 53:19between 2005 and 2010. So sometime in between and I
- 53:22want to say it was five or six or something like that.
- 53:25Is this the usatf? A few stfc CTA.
- 53:27Yeah, yeah and things like that but drastically positive
- 53:44happened. Almost it was kind of like
- 53:45Freakonomics. Yeah.
- 53:47I love that. Yeah, you know because I start
- 53:50to see it now and I'll get into that.
- 53:52Why but so what happened was then in 2006 or 46.
- 53:57They invited me to now kind of khushboo had done so much and
- 54:01they were leaning on him so much that they're like, okay, we need
- 54:03the next line of instructor so they invited me to Chicago and
- 54:08might be six or seven or something like that.
- 54:10And I kind of was like an underling and I was going to
- 54:12teach aspects of it. So it was, it was Jim, Madigan
- 54:17Kaiba, Boo, and Todd laid. We were all kind of teaching it
- 54:22together. So that's a lot of names and
- 54:24coaches for just a level field. Yeah, so it was so cool to do it
- 54:28from the other aspect of like, you know, be behind the scenes,
- 54:32kind of with it, instead of being instructor.
- 54:34But I mean, that's a pretty good staff of, you know, level to,
- 54:38you know, I'm not too but just to be there with Jim Kaiba.
- 54:44Boo, and Todd and myself solutely.
- 54:46Oh, that was the first year and so, you know, that happens, I
- 54:51get my feet wet and you know, and and I gosh, I studied so
- 54:54much for that thing. I think I could have probably
- 54:56Lee, you know, literally recited it without even that was so
- 54:59nervous that I wanted to do. Put my best foot forward, you
- 55:03know, honor Boo and dandy but each level three and it was just
- 55:09amazing. And I got to sit there and you
- 55:11know, just really have an amazing conversation with Dan
- 55:14which was the first time ever got to do that.
- 55:16And so we teach it and then the very next year the explosion
- 55:21happens. Oh, so my corn and Boo and them
- 55:27started. We're going to start this thing
- 55:29for u.s. tfcc, a working with Sam and stuff like that.
- 55:32And and and you know, so that it became a de facto USA Track &
- 55:37Field nurses, us tfcc CA and, you know, in, I Terry, Crawford
- 55:44was then part of it and terriers have been a huge mentor to me.
- 55:48I mean, Terry, was she got me the job at the center and you
- 55:52No. I mean she's become like a mom
- 55:54to me that she's awesome and we talk all the time and you know,
- 55:59her old Tennessee draw. You know it's definitely death
- 56:02that she's super intelligent lady and been amazing mentor to
- 56:06me. And so you know they asked me
- 56:10the two ways you know, you're going to go to u.s. tfcc a and I
- 56:14validate what they say. Hey, we're doing all this.
- 56:17This is our, you know, our property and our Intellectual
- 56:23property and we're getting paid, nothing for it basically and
- 56:27we're spending all this time where us tfcc a is going to make
- 56:31a model where you're going to pay for your time.
- 56:33You're going to get two to three times, what USA Track and Field
- 56:36is and you're going to get paid for what you try to do.
- 56:39And you know, Terry came to me and said, hey I really need you,
- 56:44you know, you need to stay with you in such a field and in this
- 56:47kind of stuff and so you know, I'm part of, you know, I didn't
- 56:51want to it was I was Thorn. Do I go with boohoo's kind of
- 56:54been a mentor or do I stay with but I'm always been that person
- 56:58who doesn't go with the north, you know, like no offense.
- 57:01I love Florida. I love LSU but all right, in
- 57:04Arkansas Outlet, never want to go to those schools because they
- 57:06already have a job so I can see him.
- 57:09So I wanted to do my own path and so it was kind of that way
- 57:12with USA Track and Field. I felt like even though the New
- 57:15Path is u.s. tfcc, I felt some honor honorable by staying with,
- 57:19you have subtracted. So I chose to stay with that.
- 57:22Couldn't be easy for you. I mean, you know, I know how I
- 57:25feel about. Boo.
- 57:26And I know you're in the very same vein.
- 57:28Yeah. So they could have been easy.
- 57:29I talked to him about it and he said, no Jeremy, like, you've
- 57:32got to do. We say he's gonna be supportive.
- 57:33Yeah, he totally. And I heard why he did what he
- 57:37did and kind of, you know, who Mike Moore and stuff like that.
- 57:40And and and, and they had validated.
- 57:42They totally validated, and I was still young in the process.
- 57:45So I didn't have as much of that kind of goggles and things like,
- 57:50and the history, right? Yeah.
- 57:52And probably, I think us tfcc a, as far as coaching and kind of
- 57:57that, I like, it's more honorable because you're working
- 58:00with college coaches and you're working with track and field,
- 58:03where I mean, you know, you probably saw it to doing level
- 58:06ones. You start to see almost this
- 58:08kind of like other coach come in, which was okay, you know,
- 58:11but for the track purest, it was like this guy wanted to be a
- 58:15speed agility guy. Yep.
- 58:17Who is certified? You know, Sprint code, so you
- 58:19get his loved one, you know, it's like so that looks good.
- 58:22Paper, but it's not really what it was.
- 58:25And so it's not a date, it's in our Sports.
- 58:27Then there was that was for a private business of baseball and
- 58:30football and basketball, things like that with your fine.
- 58:32There's a place for that but and I've done those and I do so I
- 58:36can't knock it but but the probably being is it was like it
- 58:39from a standpoint. The u.s. tfcc a product was kind
- 58:43of more of a thing or usatf things kind of a money maker and
- 58:47it is you know anybody who teaches ones knows that like you
- 58:51know, you make less than 50. Percent and they can use each
- 58:54other feel all they do is send you that.
- 58:56Yep. You all the way and so it is
- 59:01what it is. It was crazy.
- 59:14The next year we're in. What's the school in Philly?
- 59:19Just outside of Philly really Villanova Villanova?
- 59:22Yeah. And so because of everything, we
- 59:28have two instructors. So you go from like this Army of
- 59:33five to six. Like, not just 55 amazing.
- 59:36And yeah, I was gonna say about Russian words right here.
- 59:40No offense. I mean, I love the guy.
- 59:42He's a great guy but I have what's his name?
- 59:47Michigan, State and Clemson Lima.
- 59:49Oh my boy, Chris Bostwick. Yeah crispy.
- 59:51Yes. Teaching, level 2 together.
- 59:53Yes, yes, yes, yes. So I had to teach the first two
- 1:00:00days of level 2 by myself. Wow.
- 1:00:04And I just felt terrible and I felt good about it, but I felt
- 1:00:09terrible because it wasn't like five years later, where
- 1:00:11literally, you know, I had such Commander, the material ride,
- 1:00:15you know, this whatever. And so, you know, that's tough
- 1:00:19listening to me all day every day for two days.
- 1:00:22Yeah, and it's all day. That's, that's good.
- 1:00:24This is like a three-hour block. This is 12 hours.
- 1:00:26Yeah. Chris is able to show up the
- 1:00:28last day of and so it was like, almost like feet to the fire.
- 1:00:34And, you know, they're getting questions about, you know, hey,
- 1:00:38you stfc a, what's going on with this?
- 1:00:40Should I go to that ad instead of this?
- 1:00:41And there's this whole kind of oscars and the whole time I'm
- 1:00:44like, no, like a more, I'm education person.
- 1:00:47So the more education, but you get better if you get this, if
- 1:00:50you're getting it from us, tfcc a and Us Media.
- 1:00:53And I argued now that the high school kids and college kids are
- 1:00:57doing so well, because of the fact us CFC CCA and usatf
- 1:01:03started, educating more coaches making knowledgeable and so
- 1:01:07there's, I mean, I'm looking at these kids and they're just
- 1:01:10like, you know, twelve-year-old runs 48 seconds, you know, 16
- 1:01:14year old girl runs 12, not, you know, you just don't look across
- 1:01:17the board. And I'm like, and I think that's
- 1:01:19a one of those Freakonomics of that split It ended up paying a
- 1:01:24huge. Yeah, for the Grassroots, track
- 1:01:27and field. So, I've got to ask you a
- 1:01:28question. You'll be able to either
- 1:01:30validate my theory here or punch holes.
- 1:01:32And I'll never say this Theory again, so, because you you into
- 1:01:36the coaching, education on a different level than just taking
- 1:01:39and certifications, which I'm not poopoo on that that you have
- 1:01:42to do that. Right?
- 1:01:43But you've written curriculum, you've studied and helped build
- 1:01:46curriculum and you've seen like you just pointed out there what?
- 1:01:50Maybe the u.s. ATF us tfcc They split did for
- 1:01:53coaching education and now we have all this on top of that and
- 1:01:56what covid kind of taught us was like oh man there's like these
- 1:01:59really knowledgeable people, like Kaiba and crisp are no that
- 1:02:02can actually get on there and do Zoom calls to help begin bring
- 1:02:05this massive amounts, kind of bring everybody up to the same
- 1:02:09table on the on the level of coaching education.
- 1:02:11So here's my theory to your point.
- 1:02:14When you, I mean like exactly what you said, they're like
- 1:02:16athleticism right now and track and field is off the charts,
- 1:02:20right? I mean we're they're doing
- 1:02:21things, you know. What Mondo's doing in the pole
- 1:02:24vault oh my goodness would have course with Sydney did in the
- 1:02:26hurdles and thing Mo's doing it. I mean it's just it's crazy
- 1:02:30right now, right? I mean, the, the men's Foreigner
- 1:02:32everything, there's not an event right now.
- 1:02:34That is just like, it's just unbelievable, right?
- 1:02:37And so, what I believe is so you and Jeremy, we know each other
- 1:02:40well enough. So you come back and tell me
- 1:02:42that I'm an idiot for this. It's a quite okay.
- 1:02:43So when you first get into coaching because all, you know,
- 1:02:48is how you are coach. We typically fall back to that
- 1:02:51coaching style and till we learn more and gain our own knowledge
- 1:02:54and experiences, right? I think that in the next, say,
- 1:02:5810, 15, 20 years. What we see today in track and
- 1:03:01field is going to be Child's Play Because kids that are being
- 1:03:05coached today everywhere from that.
- 1:03:07Twelve-year-old example, you gave to Sydney right now,
- 1:03:10they're being coached at a higher level because of coaching
- 1:03:14education. And so, when they inevitably
- 1:03:17become the coaches, next, they're going to fall back to
- 1:03:20how they were coach because that's all they're going to
- 1:03:21know. And what, Bar is going to be at
- 1:03:23such a higher level than what guys like you and I how we were
- 1:03:26coached you know when coaches first came to us, they didn't
- 1:03:29have that much and so we coach like them.
- 1:03:31So I just think we're like as good as it is right now I think
- 1:03:34because of coaching education, it's going to because it layers.
- 1:03:37It's going to be unbelievable here in the next two, three
- 1:03:40Olympic Cycles. I completely agree with that
- 1:03:43statement. And, and I also, finally love
- 1:03:45smart and also feel like it's the, you know, I think it's
- 1:03:51because these coaches, Has now have the technical so dialogue.
- 1:03:55Say so now that I've worked at the Trade Center for a while and
- 1:03:58been able to be around coaches in the u.s. we were pretty
- 1:04:01lucky. We just throw spaghetti on the
- 1:04:02wall. What sticks is like our next
- 1:04:04great athlete, right? And I mean, the amount of 10 10
- 1:04:07100 meter Runners that don't make it is crazy, right?
- 1:04:12But in another country, that doesn't happen, right?
- 1:04:14Like with, they have a kid who runs 10 3, they have a whole
- 1:04:18Sport Science staff and everything to milk everything
- 1:04:21out of that kick in. And so, you know, I'll take the
- 1:04:25long jump, Michelle tourneys has become a really good friend and
- 1:04:27Michelle is long jumper. Finished, fourth, that Olympics
- 1:04:30in 2012. Multi-time European Champion,
- 1:04:33competes for Sweden and Michelle didn't jump eight meters tones.
- 1:04:3626 years old, if in the u.s. you're 26 and have jumped eight
- 1:04:40meters, you're out of the sport. Wow.
- 1:04:43Yeah. And so but because he's from
- 1:04:44Sweden he was supported and then he really has you know success
- 1:04:49from 28 to 32 which is where most Athlete.
- 1:04:52Great athletes the other, right? Go will and Kris Kris out but
- 1:04:56you start to look at people like Jeff Henderson and you know he
- 1:04:58developed later and you know those athletes and the u.s.
- 1:05:02unfortunately it's like if you're not hurt you're not a
- 1:05:05developer between the ages of twenty two, twenty three, Twenty
- 1:05:09One, your app most likely out of the sky.
- 1:05:12And so I think that all this coaching allows for the
- 1:05:17technical models to get better and quite frankly like we talked
- 1:05:21about it in College. You only have so many hours.
- 1:05:24You have only have so much. They're 18 to 22 years old.
- 1:05:27So what's the best thing to do? Get them stronger and faster,
- 1:05:30right? And so, it's okay from their
- 1:05:32technical model because we're just going to get a pastor and
- 1:05:34we do have been asking job but faster and stronger only gets
- 1:05:38you so far. So then we get these kids run
- 1:05:4110/10 but we can't change your technical model one because they
- 1:05:44need to make their money and to you know, be whether you know it
- 1:05:51is what it is. We can't.
- 1:05:52Take the time for individuality to change the technical model to
- 1:05:55get them to run 99 or whatever it is.
- 1:05:58And so and that's a lot of places across the board.
- 1:06:01And so with that then you have an in again it just gets into so
- 1:06:07many different players. I mean, you got these things
- 1:06:10like Travis Gap at Arkansas and you have, you know, Nick Pearson
- 1:06:16at Florida and I'm just called the jumps and Todd Lane and, you
- 1:06:20know, and you know, James The guys, you know, you know who
- 1:06:23they are James down, he's gonna be mad at me for not calling
- 1:06:30about, you know, he's a friend of mine and he's I've mentioned
- 1:06:33him on the podcast before so we're just gonna let him go.
- 1:06:36Yeah. Okay, Keith Keith.
- 1:06:40Keith it. But it's crazy because they have
- 1:06:45their college team and then they have, you know, these
- 1:06:48post-collegiate kids at stick around and it's like, you know,
- 1:06:52Oh, and when I was in the college setting, I was like,
- 1:06:54yeah, the kids you stick around and stuff like that.
- 1:06:56But then post-collegiate lie, what happens, right?
- 1:06:59From at the training center from May, you know, basically third
- 1:07:04week in May until the first week in June, I have six or seven of
- 1:07:09the top jumpers in the country out, training with me because
- 1:07:13their college coaches, can't be with them because they're
- 1:07:16regionals or kind of conference Regional.
- 1:07:19Yeah. Coach those kids in Europe and
- 1:07:21in the islands. The time and I'm happy to help
- 1:07:23because you know, their part that's part of what it is.
- 1:07:25And so but there's no support either.
- 1:07:28I mean you got Dwight who's got a, you know, post-collegiate
- 1:07:31group and that's it, it's not affiliated with the college, you
- 1:07:36know. And so, you know, there's not a
- 1:07:39lot even in the field events. There's, you know, maybe more
- 1:07:42Ryan, Whiting was, but now he's part of ASU.
- 1:07:44So I think you got throw deep with in Georgia but there's Mike
- 1:07:51Judge. Yeah.
- 1:07:52There's not very many post-collegiate coaches in the
- 1:07:54field event so that, you know, have that.
- 1:07:58And so there's, you know, in even for the spring coaches, you
- 1:08:02know, it's hard, I mean, you know, Flo he's got this
- 1:08:05unbelievable, you know, team winning national championships
- 1:08:08and then he's, you know, luckily he has a dedication, whatever to
- 1:08:11have is post-collegiate group and say Holloway and you know on
- 1:08:14and on and on but it gets to a point you know to were we can't
- 1:08:19just give every kid to those coaches, you know.
- 1:08:22Fair to them. And you know it's not fair to
- 1:08:25the kids eat and so we're just out of dilemma right now even in
- 1:08:29the u.s. Well let's let's catch up to
- 1:08:31that part for you so where we left off on your journey, was
- 1:08:35Oklahoma, you're done. You go back home to be with Dad,
- 1:08:39but you're a guy with no homo and what I mean by the no job
- 1:08:42home. What.
- 1:08:43So what do you do? And it's funny that you mention
- 1:08:45about going back to California. You said I'm a Southern Cal guy,
- 1:08:48I can't remember, who was the guest here.
- 1:08:50Just recently, I said, I kind of I was I was, he was a distance
- 1:08:54person who coaches Sprints and jumping hurdles and I was like,
- 1:08:58you know, my take on Californians, every Californian
- 1:09:00I've ever met. They all want to get back to
- 1:09:03California. I go.
- 1:09:04So I was lead up for him. Was your a distance Runner or
- 1:09:08are you wanting to get back to coaching distance?
- 1:09:09Like, you know, distance guys are their own little thing.
- 1:09:12So I love that. You're like, how much Southern
- 1:09:13Cal guy, man? So the that traction, that
- 1:09:16tractor beam from California, man, is strong.
- 1:09:19You go back, you go back home. It's hard to blame you because
- 1:09:21it's gorgeous out there. What do you do though?
- 1:09:24You don't, you don't have a job at the cable.
- 1:09:25You did that? No, I don't have a job but it's
- 1:09:28one of those things that, you know, the one Faith I've always
- 1:09:31had him, is myself. I feel like I'll find a way and
- 1:09:35so I was able to kind of Leverage some stuff where I had
- 1:09:38six NFL 16 baseball guys but he think about it and then I ended
- 1:09:42up growing where I had 40 kids that I was training.
- 1:09:45Wow, yeah. And actually, I was end up being
- 1:09:48very lucrative and end up being way more than what I made in
- 1:09:51college. It was like Twice.
- 1:09:52What? I was making college and it was
- 1:09:54good, too, because I was still paying the mortgage in Oklahoma
- 1:09:57and paying rent in California and by that'll take all the pee
- 1:10:00right there. Yeah, I was driving 200 miles a
- 1:10:02day, you know, because then I was also, you know, first I was
- 1:10:06just working with kids in Orange County and, you know, it worked
- 1:10:10out really, really well from that standpoint but then it was
- 1:10:13two years where I think I work 360 out of three and sixty five
- 1:10:17days. It was because I couldn't say
- 1:10:19no, you know? So I'm whether it was like,
- 1:10:21coaching love, One level two I think I did like 10 level ones
- 1:10:25that year. I think I did like level twos.
- 1:10:27I was going internationally to do.
- 1:10:28I remember this you were doing it felt like you were doing
- 1:10:31every level 1. I remember this so much and it
- 1:10:34was just my kind of way of just like okay I've got to stabilize
- 1:10:37myself and make money and two years, like, wait, what did I
- 1:10:41do? What did I make?
- 1:10:42You know, because it was just like you're not doing that
- 1:10:46you're just, you know, kind of whatever and I was during that
- 1:10:50time to when I was out I was Actually offered in the job at a
- 1:10:55six so Ben stays are left. Oh, yeah Ben.
- 1:10:59I remember hell yeah. I love Town.
- 1:11:02Yeah, his job at a six and it was crazy.
- 1:11:04I went on an interview in like late August, early September and
- 1:11:09went in for a second one, and maybe late September, and then
- 1:11:12didn't hear anything. So I was like, okay, I didn't
- 1:11:14get the job at, you know, Asics and stuff.
- 1:11:16So, I was trained in my NFL guys and doing all this kind of
- 1:11:19stuff, and I was already doing that.
- 1:11:21So I was kind of like, You know, I need time to be able to do
- 1:11:24that and I get a call from HR and December and like, Hey,
- 1:11:27we're going to start next week and I'm like what?
- 1:11:31Yeah, that was crazy. And so I ended up meeting with
- 1:11:34HR lady and just going through. Hey, like just so, you know, I
- 1:11:37interviewed in September when I write anything.
- 1:11:39You're the first I've heard since then.
- 1:11:41Yeah. And now you're calling me to
- 1:11:43like offered me a job and I'm like, I've moved on so far that
- 1:11:47how you know, it's not an end up being a blessing because, you
- 1:11:50know, being like the manager Or like, you know, shoe company and
- 1:11:54doing that kind of stuff, probably wasn't.
- 1:11:56It was a way to stay in the sport but in her probably the
- 1:11:58right thing for me, you know, is Ben still at Nike?
- 1:12:02No bends back with a sink. Is he okay, I haven't talked to
- 1:12:04him in so long. I met him when he was a success.
- 1:12:07I Think Through Drake Relays and really like, you know, for a guy
- 1:12:10in the different part of our industry would really, really
- 1:12:12been with the coach. So Ben was at UC Irvine, when I
- 1:12:15was at Northridge, so we cool. So is a pretty fast Sprinter.
- 1:12:21I always joke pens. Biggest caps I've ever seen, but
- 1:12:25so, yeah. So now he's back with us for
- 1:12:27help. Good for him.
- 1:12:28Yeah. And yeah, pretty high up with
- 1:12:30them. And so, so I, you know, it's
- 1:12:32funny, you kind of Go full circle and a six, wasn't the
- 1:12:36right thing for me. So I still continue to do that.
- 1:12:38And then shortly after that in January, Terry said we have a
- 1:12:43position at the center for you if you would like.
- 1:12:45And so it was like more of a director of Ops Splash coach /
- 1:12:49this and it's only going to pay this much.
- 1:12:52Touch nose like well let me get my feet back into coaching, it
- 1:12:56was a great experience. So I got to work with Ty seven
- 1:12:59aren't Venegas was hired as the like I could salted.
- 1:13:03Yeah, it's right grateful, was the director Al Joyner,
- 1:13:07obviously was out there and walking Crews working para.
- 1:13:10And so it was just, it was cool. Like I was just like I was more
- 1:13:13enamored by the fact that like hey I'm working with, you know,
- 1:13:16to gold medalist, you know, and stuff like that.
- 1:13:18But this was this when you sat fr usoc Is the Olympic Training
- 1:13:23Center out there really kind of fell on Hard Times.
- 1:13:26Like, no one really was managing no one was really doing any kind
- 1:13:28of elite support. Like bringing the athletes in
- 1:13:32that would have been actually before.
- 1:13:34So, around 2000, 01 02 03. I was the junior high hurdle,
- 1:13:41Lee coaching, I brought out all, you know, the best high
- 1:13:43schoolers, 19 years old, or whatnot out there, but there
- 1:13:45really wasn't like that was not the place where Elites went to
- 1:13:48go to train even though they had great facilities and things
- 1:13:51like, that was this when they I started trying to reawaken that
- 1:13:53and actually you guys did a great job as a member for a
- 1:13:55while. There were some some really good
- 1:13:57guys and gals training there. Yeah, so the u.s.
- 1:13:59OPC ran it up until like 10 or 10 or 11 and then they said here
- 1:14:04we're going to give you the money.
- 1:14:05We're going to give you this amount of money but you have to
- 1:14:07have the residence program. Like first hire that they had
- 1:14:10was barred first person, they were trying to hire was that
- 1:14:14Terry took over and shoe. We're going to try to hire
- 1:14:17Clifford belka and you know his wife and yeah they come out.
- 1:14:22Like this is awesome. But like just like even if it's
- 1:14:26so expensive and I live in whatever and then you know, he
- 1:14:29leverage that and he got end up getting this huge contract at
- 1:14:32Kansas State, much deserve and stuff.
- 1:14:34And so, yeah. So then they hired coach poll
- 1:14:38after poll, and, and he kind of took over, and it was kind of
- 1:14:42different programs. So there's some kids there and
- 1:14:44then it was a transition time and it was he started this like
- 1:14:48funnel system where we were trying to develop kids into
- 1:14:51athletes So it definitely was probably the highest level of
- 1:14:56athletes. We started having I got in there
- 1:14:58so like Joe Kovacs cane sugar that I was saying there were
- 1:15:01some throwing was going on, right?
- 1:15:04And obviously Ryan, after it turns 16 actually and it brought
- 1:15:09out the big homie, Darrell Hill. Mmm, you know, we had standpoint
- 1:15:17it just you know higher level athlete like in the in the
- 1:15:21jumpsuit is my carpet. Brittany.
- 1:15:24And that's right. Brittany spend some time.
- 1:15:27Yeah, yeah. So we went from, I think they
- 1:15:30had two Olympic medals and we actually had to give one, you
- 1:15:33know, Toby Stevenson had one and then we won was in The Foreigner
- 1:15:36hurdles because Sheena Sheena tossed.
- 1:15:39It was trading at the center is a week.
- 1:15:42So to that point, I think those were the two metals that we had,
- 1:15:46you know, and then in 12, you know, 11 will comes out and fro
- 1:15:51and he was about It'll and then it just starts started
- 1:15:54snowballing to. Brittany comes out obviously in
- 1:15:5612 and and Brad, I think Walker going to endure.
- 1:16:01Metal is, Will 1 2011? He won the triple jump and then
- 1:16:05Outdoors will won two medals great people.
- 1:16:08I mean it just snowballs. So we have average, you know,
- 1:16:12through metals that everyone thinks what was the difference
- 1:16:15for you. You know, when we get into
- 1:16:17coaching regardless of the level was high school or club or Or
- 1:16:22college, we all have. And that's a blanket statement
- 1:16:26here, and I don't like those necessarily, but we all want to
- 1:16:29coach Olympians like that's our Holy Grail in our sport, right?
- 1:16:32The gold medal, Etc, and making the Olympic team, you know, the
- 1:16:35Rings. What is the difference?
- 1:16:40You've coached a lot of different levels, a lot of
- 1:16:42different levels of athletes, you're immersed with.
- 1:16:46I mean you just named some of the best jumpers that we've ever
- 1:16:49had in America. Brittany Reese will clay you can
- 1:16:50stop right there and I've insulted 10 other amazing
- 1:16:54jumpers, right? What is the difference as you
- 1:16:56can because you were immersed into it?
- 1:16:58You you weren't coach on the college level.
- 1:17:00You weren't doing Club you were it was all about how do we get
- 1:17:03to the world Champs or the Olympic teams and how do we
- 1:17:05metal? What's the difference as a
- 1:17:07coach? Whether it's Time management
- 1:17:09psychology. I hesitate, I don't think it's
- 1:17:13training but you tell me. But what's the kind of macro
- 1:17:17bigger difference working with that type of athlete on the 24/7
- 1:17:20basis? I don't think it's the meat and
- 1:17:22potatoes, but it's life around it.
- 1:17:25So interesting. So so meaning that like meaning
- 1:17:28that like in college, it's about stronger faster.
- 1:17:32You know, in that, and we can do some technical, but you're
- 1:17:34limited by 1820 hours, right? And there's things that I know
- 1:17:38every college coach. Which they could do but they
- 1:17:40probably don't have the time for it, you know, or bandwidth to do
- 1:17:44it at our level like I can try and six hours a day.
- 1:17:47We don't train six hours a day, but you know, the kids come in
- 1:17:49at 10, we do you? Nope, Rehabilitation therapy.
- 1:17:53They get, you know, treatment whatever.
- 1:17:55Then I do a lot of things that I just couldn't do at the college
- 1:17:59level because we didn't have the time to do.
- 1:18:02And so then it's, you know, like our training starts at 11:00,
- 1:18:04we're done by like 130, you know, for the technical
- 1:18:08standpoint, Point we go eat lunch, then they come down and
- 1:18:11we do, you know what? I call it in Pre weight room,
- 1:18:15you know, kind of things. We're opening up our hip
- 1:18:17stability, all these different kind of stuff.
- 1:18:19We do it for 45 minutes and then we go to the waiting room, you
- 1:18:22know, for 45 minutes or whatever.
- 1:18:23You just mentioned, pre weight room, 45 minutes.
- 1:18:26Some people don't go to the weight room for 45 minutes.
- 1:18:30Exactly and and we I try to limit the actual weight room
- 1:18:34stuffed about 45 minutes because I know, you know, for thrower
- 1:18:37it's different like they need to Moreover many be in there but
- 1:18:40for a you know jumper you know and Sprinter and they have
- 1:18:46basically attention span for 45 minutes.
- 1:18:49So we you know, we try to lift three to four days a week and
- 1:18:53shorter, kind of stance but and then we you know it's like I'm
- 1:18:58pre-programming ourselves before we go to the weight room so that
- 1:19:03we're ready to transition into that.
- 1:19:06And so we do a lot of Of just different kind of stuff, you
- 1:19:11know, whether it's slant board or bands, or, you know, I submit
- 1:19:15your coals, things like that. Before we go to the weight room
- 1:19:18to do, whatever we do are doing during that block.
- 1:19:22And so that's the stuff that I can do because I don't have to
- 1:19:25go to class most of them don't have jobs or jobs.
- 1:19:28I tell them it's got to be before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m.
- 1:19:32and so you know we're professional athletes.
- 1:19:34And so that's the stuff that we can really do and then I can
- 1:19:38individualize Which, you know how it's harder to do.
- 1:19:41So I can sit there and say, hey, Brittany, we're struggling with
- 1:19:43this getting concept. I don't want to be, you know,
- 1:19:46it's just you and I let's go out there, you know, come at 1:00 or
- 1:19:502:00 and right. And so those are the things that
- 1:19:53I'm able to do that. I couldn't do in college just
- 1:19:56because, you know, you got to work around class schedules and
- 1:19:59all the other and hours and everything else like that.
- 1:20:01So that's the difference. And then the same exact sounds
- 1:20:04like, for what you just go, as far as you are able to get
- 1:20:06deeper into the training modalities, and And really do
- 1:20:10individualization. Yeah.
- 1:20:12And then and then the biggest thing that was amazing to me was
- 1:20:17that I think the center, you know, I talked a little bit
- 1:20:22about this where it was first Northridge and all my
- 1:20:26certifications took me like, left my first level to open my
- 1:20:29eyes to things, and then it was like a Northridge.
- 1:20:31I got all my certifications and learned and went to that next
- 1:20:33level. Then Oklahoma, I started
- 1:20:36teaching and writing and doing all that kind of Episode took me
- 1:20:39to the next level, then I feel like the next level was actually
- 1:20:42working with sports that weren't track and field.
- 1:20:44So I became a movement specialist in those working NFL
- 1:20:48guys, Major League, Baseball guys, high school kids that were
- 1:20:50in all different Sports volleyball and there's movement
- 1:20:53patterns and stuff that I was like, okay, yeah, we're missing
- 1:20:55this, right? So you know, we're very linear
- 1:20:58kind of thing but you still have to have curvilinear and you know
- 1:21:03rotational things to keep ourselves healthy.
- 1:21:05How much are we doing this in college?
- 1:21:07So yeah. College, are we still doing some
- 1:21:10of the side-to-side things with are still going to be huge and
- 1:21:13beneficial to us or we doing external rotation, or internal
- 1:21:16rotation because we externally rotate almost in everything
- 1:21:19we're doing right? So, being able to like, look at
- 1:21:22those things and make sure those modalities are part of my
- 1:21:25training. And so, but the bigger thing
- 1:21:29was, the fact of who I got to rub shoulders with, And so that
- 1:21:35was what was big. I mean, you know, people were
- 1:21:37going out to Altis, you know, a lot of college coaches to see
- 1:21:40Dan and stuff like that and and Aundrea stand in them and so
- 1:21:45they got to do that. I get to do that almost like on
- 1:21:47a weekly basis. So Bobby Kersey would come out
- 1:21:52with Allison for two to three weeks every year.
- 1:21:55So I get to sit there and I'd be done with practice and just
- 1:21:57watch practice and talked about. Oh, wow.
- 1:22:00People to hate, people would pay for that ticket.
- 1:22:04He doesn't really do talk. So I'm sitting there, right?
- 1:22:07Like, I hear, I remember one practice that stands out for me.
- 1:22:10He was just, you know, talking to the girls about how important
- 1:22:13it was to run on the inside of the lane, you know why to do it,
- 1:22:18what it looked like, how it staged out how he said, it up
- 1:22:22the ID catering. And I'm sitting there going, I
- 1:22:24get to see this, no one, you know, because he's at the
- 1:22:26center, all right, Johnson when he was working there, you know,
- 1:22:29LaShawn Merritt, and the stuff he was doing and just kind of
- 1:22:32whatever and then just talking to her Folks and then on dries
- 1:22:38thorkelson, when he was, you know, when all the Jeff stuff
- 1:22:40and mature and a different training, he was doing and then
- 1:22:43the hammer. Thrower, what's his name?
- 1:22:47It was multi-time, the Hungarian.
- 1:22:48But he'd come out and just, you know, Carolina, clue and young
- 1:22:54actor Garo with him. And, I mean, it was just like
- 1:22:58World wise, not just coaches and athletes and being able to talk
- 1:23:03to them and see, Them and stuff like talk to our team about
- 1:23:05strength training. You know, talk to Mac Wilkins
- 1:23:08about, you know kind of his experience just on and on and
- 1:23:12on. So that was the you know amazing
- 1:23:16nelio Mauro coming out his group or just on and on and on
- 1:23:20Wolfgang, Rich story of coming out, you know, France, Bosh, you
- 1:23:24know things like and so during my time it was just I opening
- 1:23:30from the standpoint of just being able to talk to and see
- 1:23:34see and Implement some of the stuff they were doing our
- 1:23:37theories or process like that. So, where is this?
- 1:23:40You're going to love this one. This popped in my head here.
- 1:23:43Where is your ego at this time? And here's what I mean by this,
- 1:23:48you know, you just painted a picture like everybody listening
- 1:23:50right now is like, you know, sitting there watching Bobby, do
- 1:23:53his craft, and you're right, he doesn't speak.
- 1:23:55He doesn't, he's not the guy who's on, doing his own YouTubes
- 1:24:00and teaching level twos and whatnot.
- 1:24:02He's he has his thing, he does his thing.
- 1:24:04And those are pretty high-level guys and gals but you know, so
- 1:24:08you paint this picture of your able to like you're at the front
- 1:24:11row of watching him and Brooks Johnson and Franz and Dan and I
- 1:24:17mean the list goes along. It could be easy for you as you
- 1:24:23because you're also coaching at the high level.
- 1:24:24That's not take away. What you are.
- 1:24:26You are actually doing coaching wise as well, you're coaching at
- 1:24:28a very high level, it would be easy and maybe forgivable to
- 1:24:32have an ego of like, man, So and so is getting a lot of pub and
- 1:24:37is making this much money at this school or this person is,
- 1:24:39you know, making the head coach of the Olympic team, whatever.
- 1:24:43But, I'm not naming any, this is not a direct anybody, it could
- 1:24:46be easy for you to get into your own ego and be like, why am I
- 1:24:49not making eggs? Why am I not thought of as this
- 1:24:52big Guru Etc, massively, because to me you are, you are that
- 1:24:57group. But how are you ego, wise in
- 1:25:01your coaching and coaching progression?
- 1:25:03And At that point, you know it you do like you know, it's
- 1:25:09funny. I've coached 18 Olympic and
- 1:25:11World Championship medal s, right?
- 1:25:12And that's, you know, something, you know, honored to do.
- 1:25:17But I think because I had a relationship with the kids and I
- 1:25:19don't see him as Widgets or metals or anything like that.
- 1:25:23I've never been that way. And so for me it's like I do
- 1:25:26very well financially I get paid, you know?
- 1:25:30I mean, yeah, I could probably get paid more from my jobs but
- 1:25:34I've been able to leverage like, you know, I work with Korea or
- 1:25:37work with this country. They paid me really well to work
- 1:25:40with the athletes but I love what I do.
- 1:25:42I mean I have an assistant who I pay.
- 1:25:45I have three people four people on my payroll under my MBA,
- 1:25:49training and stuff like that. And so I'm blessed to kind of do
- 1:25:52that and kind of being my own boss.
- 1:25:54Now, you know, which was critical and and and you know,
- 1:25:57I've been to 76 countries in 49 states and so you know, I went
- 1:26:01well, what's the one state Alaska?
- 1:26:04As I've ever be Alaska. Yeah, maybe like, no, I went to
- 1:26:07Alaska. I just haven't gone to Georgia
- 1:26:09like wait what. So for my 50th I'm going to do
- 1:26:14you know Alaska's? Yes.
- 1:26:16Oh that's so cool. Yeah that'll be a highlight for
- 1:26:18me and so but it you know, it it's it can be but you can't,
- 1:26:26you know, get mad at that, you know, it's hard, you know.
- 1:26:29And, you know, I'm not going to be disparaging to anything.
- 1:26:32But like, if I was a distance coach, With 18 world and Olympic
- 1:26:35medals. They would throw the kitchen
- 1:26:37sink at me or if I was a Sprint coach and they would throw the
- 1:26:40kitchen sink at me and US field event.
- 1:26:43Coaches know, that's not going to happen.
- 1:26:45We're not going to be, you know, despite our success and all that
- 1:26:49kind of stuff. You're not going to do that.
- 1:26:51I mean, I think they said there's 18 distance enclaves in
- 1:26:54America, right? And a lot, some kind of shoe
- 1:26:57company. Well, there's two
- 1:26:59post-collegiate jump programs and you know, and I You know,
- 1:27:04and I've been pretty successful and I'm not, you know, sponsored
- 1:27:08by anybody, I just, I'm able to leverage a lot of what I do to,
- 1:27:13you know, financially be pretty solvent, do well but that's
- 1:27:17neither here nor there and so I can't get, you know, upset by
- 1:27:21it. It's just interesting to go to
- 1:27:22another country, like, Scotland, or Sweden or whatever and they
- 1:27:27just put me on, like, they treat me like, you know, like I do
- 1:27:31interviews and, you know, this and in 12 years at the center,
- 1:27:35I've never been interviewed once by, you know, like track Doom
- 1:27:39news or whoever and I don't care.
- 1:27:42It is what it is. Because the most important thing
- 1:27:45is that I literally get hundreds, if not thousands of
- 1:27:49requests for video, watch or kosher or anything like that.
- 1:27:53So, I know that within the jumps community that a lot of people
- 1:27:59respect and they say positive things and they, you know, and
- 1:28:03they just They say how great a job I'm doing and stuff like
- 1:28:07that. And that's not what I do it for.
- 1:28:08I do it for the athletes but it's nice to also see that, you
- 1:28:11know, and helping other people. And at the end of the day, I
- 1:28:14think that's, you know. Yeah, you sell stuff but Mighty
- 1:28:18your help and you want to see the sport move ahead.
- 1:28:20So when your equipment you know can help in that sense, you're
- 1:28:25going to be very happy with it and I'm kind of the same way.
- 1:28:27It's yeah coaching videos and my thing can help, you know?
- 1:28:31Then that's the way it is. It's like, you know, Like I have
- 1:28:34sixteen thousand followers on Instagram, right?
- 1:28:36And I didn't try to buy them, it's just me posting stuff and
- 1:28:41people going like, hey, that helps and that stuff.
- 1:28:44So I'm always try to post things that can help coaches, or that's
- 1:28:47B value giving, right? So, keep us transitioning
- 1:28:53because the US Olympic Training Center, there in Chula Vista,
- 1:28:57goes through some Transformations, right?
- 1:28:58Because it eventually becomes the Chula Vista training center.
- 1:29:01And now, and I'm not even really caught up with what it Now, what
- 1:29:04is going to keep it? Tell us how that training center
- 1:29:07evolved. So, so I record evolved, by the
- 1:29:10way, I don't know. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:29:13It's kind of, it's just an interesting kind of thing.
- 1:29:16I don't ever feel like anybody's promised a job especially in
- 1:29:20track and field, you know? I mean it's changed.
- 1:29:23I mean you know you had coaches that coach forever and now
- 1:29:25coaches are getting fired, which is if you think about it, it's
- 1:29:28like coach track and field, we're not doing like, you know,
- 1:29:31we're not football or basketball which is making millions were
- 1:29:34We're literally costing Millions, you know, and I think
- 1:29:37it was interesting. I think Sam said it, I talked to
- 1:29:39him recently and in the last six months and he said you know
- 1:29:43basically track and field almost a billion dollar business as far
- 1:29:47as buying tracks and tell ya Tricia running you know tourism
- 1:29:53and everything else. And I mean think of b 1 d 2 D 3
- 1:29:56Junior College all the you know anything, it's easily the
- 1:30:00billion dollars you know. And so I think it was like 900
- 1:30:03something you know. I turned 80 or 70 something
- 1:30:05million dollars and so, but in that in track and field and kind
- 1:30:12of what happens is that the OCC own the training center in in
- 1:30:172016, they gave up the training center, they didn't want to run
- 1:30:21it cost, five million dollars to do business set and it was
- 1:30:25empty. Mostly like it was not yet 30 40
- 1:30:28percent capacity for our but that wasn't their job to make
- 1:30:30money. Their job is high performance
- 1:30:32and so you know, we had three metals And in London at five
- 1:30:36medals in Rio in track, we were the seventh best country in the
- 1:30:41world was training center was because you had Ryan krauser Joe
- 1:30:44Kovacs. Yeah.
- 1:30:46Well, clay and Jeff Henderson, you know, so you had two gold
- 1:30:49medals in three cylinders, which that's pretty good.
- 1:30:52Yeah. It's and you know, and so from
- 1:30:5516 to 20, Unfortunately they went to the CBE ATC Elite
- 1:31:00athlete Training Center. So basically the point
- 1:31:03enrollment, In trust, which is a local school and the city of
- 1:31:06Chula Vista took over running the center so they made it for
- 1:31:10profit and so you know it's a little bit of everything.
- 1:31:14You also PC was still giving like three and a half million
- 1:31:17dollars to see B to the C. Bacc, and then USA, Track and
- 1:31:22Field. We were running presents program
- 1:31:24and we're over six hundred. Twenty-five thousand dollar
- 1:31:27budget every year coaches, salaries, and traveled stuff in
- 1:31:31the Years up with leading up to 228, just decrease.
- 1:31:36I mean, it went from, you know, like we decrease the number of
- 1:31:40beds, we decrease the number of kind of thing, and then
- 1:31:43basically, after 22, they decided that they were going to
- 1:31:46run the program. I think, you know, obviously I
- 1:31:50have my opinion about it, you know, and stuff like that
- 1:31:54because of the success we have. I understand if it was a zero,
- 1:31:57some kind of thing where run we sing.
- 1:32:00But, you know, we still had one metal and Tokyo despite all the
- 1:32:03craziness. Wow, we'll miss the metal by 2
- 1:32:06cm and you know, so it literally like we're that close to 2 and
- 1:32:12at the end of the day Ryan krauser and Joe Kovacs will give
- 1:32:15us so much credit, you know, them being in the establish
- 1:32:19themselves the center. So even though they weren't here
- 1:32:22that's still too, they was built off of what they did there for
- 1:32:26sure. Yeah we had all these great
- 1:32:32athletes qualify for the team. Team and, you know, Chris Mack
- 1:32:36to phenomenal job. Yeah.
- 1:32:37Chris 3 and great country has finally reach your potential on
- 1:32:42mazing potential. And so, you know, up and down.
- 1:32:46We had amazing kind of thing. And in this year, cash we had I
- 1:32:52think we had like six or seven or eight athletes.
- 1:32:55Still despite no beds. No, support, local athletes and
- 1:33:01stuff. We still had seven athletes.
- 1:33:02Make the team and It was the first time in a long time that
- 1:33:06we had no medals Center. And so, what is that place that
- 1:33:11like, you know, I used I'm never going up and you check in, is
- 1:33:14that just land now? Or is anybody?
- 1:33:16You still have east of para, track, and Field's here?
- 1:33:19Yeah, rugby, sevens. Okay, local professional soccer
- 1:33:24team from, I think the, uh, L or you, whatever the soccer league
- 1:33:28is you've got. Archery, you can through comes
- 1:33:33out. Every business will be out
- 1:33:35shortly and they'll be out for like five months.
- 1:33:38And yeah, and use, we still have about seven or eight hours and
- 1:33:41so still traffic will clay. You know, he had a baby so he
- 1:33:45said, he'll be here for a while but you know we my expectation
- 1:33:49is you'll probably go somewhere else, which is?
- 1:33:51Yeah, really fine. And then we have international
- 1:33:55athletes that come through I mean last year getting ready for
- 1:33:57girls we had Ukraine. Oh yeah, Portugal.
- 1:34:02And then like So, here talking about kind of cool, I get to
- 1:34:06watch a little bit of practice, Vitaly, Petrov, was out here
- 1:34:09with his group because he's got the Philippine kid, the
- 1:34:12Brazilian kid. And then he's got a couple
- 1:34:14Chinese guy since. All right, he was out here and
- 1:34:17just the coaches that were out there.
- 1:34:19Being able to watch was once was really cool.
- 1:34:21Did he do you still at this point?
- 1:34:23You've coached for a long time? Do you still like when you talk
- 1:34:27about Petrov and some of those guys coming over there, do you
- 1:34:30still soak it all in? Do you still just eagle-eyed pay
- 1:34:33attention? What can I gain for us?
- 1:34:35So, for every year for 45 years, you know, a lot of lean and his
- 1:34:41coach came out. And so, I would sit with his
- 1:34:43coach at least one. I told myself at least, it was
- 1:34:46probably more of kind of being annoying a little while.
- 1:34:49But at least now, when they come out, if they still come because
- 1:34:52they come out for less time that I make sure that I spend the
- 1:34:56practice with him and talk to him and just well, now we'll
- 1:34:58talk about family will talk about other stuff but well, you
- 1:35:01know, each other now training and stuff.
- 1:35:02Yeah. So you know every time I'm an
- 1:35:04elite coach comes out, you know, I try to sit with them so like a
- 1:35:09good one was Christophe. Who coached the world record
- 1:35:12holder in the hammer from Poland for can just too many names.
- 1:35:18Yeah, Kristoff. And I've talked to him, and I
- 1:35:21try to help him out vest Stein. He brings out, you know, Daniel
- 1:35:24stall and those guys and oh, yeah, wow, you know about stuff.
- 1:35:28And so it just, you know, I'm always just, you know, talking
- 1:35:33to the Coaches of these Elite just to you know, pick up some
- 1:35:36nuggets. I'll just watch their practice
- 1:35:38and stuff like that if I have the time and so I always make
- 1:35:40time to make sure. Yeah.
- 1:35:42Well I'm still a fan and even more so I'm still trying to
- 1:35:45learn. Yeah, you know, can always, you
- 1:35:49know, the coach comes out, I always want to like, watch
- 1:35:52practice and do whatever it is. A lot of humility in that, you
- 1:35:55know, at this age and stage of your career.
- 1:35:58Again, this would be something that no one would blame you for
- 1:36:00if you're like yeah you know if I can I'll make it out there but
- 1:36:02otherwise what I mean I'm doing this.
- 1:36:04Longer than some of those guys have what do I need to learn?
- 1:36:06So there's humility there, like let me go learn what's what else
- 1:36:09can I pick up out there but it's always check your ego at the
- 1:36:12door, I think. Yeah, it's hard because College
- 1:36:14I feel like teaches you have to be very protective of your
- 1:36:17group, you know? And that's how you get ahead.
- 1:36:20Like you said in college, you get Coach of the Year award to
- 1:36:23get all this kind of stuff. And that's how you move up, you
- 1:36:25know, I get stability and stuff like that, so you almost become
- 1:36:28a little overprotective new feeling.
- 1:36:31Even though, like let's say, you know, Like let's say I was
- 1:36:36working at Florida and I'm the jumps coach, right?
- 1:36:38And and, you know, coach always spread coach, you know, ice
- 1:36:43become so protected. My group that even at Oklahoma,
- 1:36:46you sometimes forget to like, comment always like one of the
- 1:36:49best friend. Coaches, let me go over there
- 1:36:50and just sit and watch practice a little bit.
- 1:36:53Right? And so I think sometimes in
- 1:36:56college, you get away from that because you just recruiting
- 1:36:59you're doing this and it my level.
- 1:37:02If coach Holloway comes out, I get to see.
- 1:37:04So organ was coming out. So I get to sit there and spend
- 1:37:07some time, you know, Robert and obviously more with Coach
- 1:37:10Taylor, you know, careers. I get to talk to him like to
- 1:37:13watch practice, it can see what they're doing, you know, and
- 1:37:15stuff like that. So there's those kind of nuances
- 1:37:19that I get that, you know, and I think it comes because I don't
- 1:37:25look at, you know, I'm being hospitable and I'm trying to,
- 1:37:28you know, whatever, I'm not the director anymore.
- 1:37:30But all right, they have to talk to me because, you know, I will
- 1:37:34The director of the program and help with that and you know I
- 1:37:37try to make them feel welcome but I also am trying to go out
- 1:37:40and, you know, like just watch their practices and stuff that
- 1:37:44they don't see me as a threat who think they will catch us up,
- 1:37:49man. That's right there.
- 1:37:51You have lived like two or three coaches careers.
- 1:37:54My friend tell us about MVA training what you're doing.
- 1:37:57Now, I loved your line. I had to write it down as a
- 1:37:59note. As far as owning your own
- 1:38:01business. You said I'm My Own Boss and you
- 1:38:03said, That was one thing but then what you the three words
- 1:38:06you added after that I thought were really essential.
- 1:38:08Are you said which is critical when you talked about owning MVA
- 1:38:13and having people on your staff? That's great because healthy
- 1:38:15things grow. So you're building a company
- 1:38:16which means people are employed, those are great things and
- 1:38:19you're serving athletes. So tell us about MVA training.
- 1:38:21How did it come about? What is it?
- 1:38:23Why should we pay attention to it?
- 1:38:25So I knew basically I knew that your track and field was ending
- 1:38:28their program. I mean I actually thought we
- 1:38:30were done after 12 and 16 and a 20.
- 1:38:34Nine Lives of the cat, right online class on how to build an
- 1:38:40online business and stuff. And I've had literally thousands
- 1:38:45of coaches asked me questions, and I've gone to clinics and
- 1:38:47doing that kind of stuff. And there's a need for an online
- 1:38:51platform where you can get training, you can get education,
- 1:38:54you can get Coach T. So basically, I've uploaded a
- 1:38:57lot of talks and a lot of podcasts and there's literally
- 1:39:01thousands of videos of training and Weakly, I write training so
- 1:39:06you can follow your one. Now I'm on your two overriding
- 1:39:09it and you know at any time I have like 50 to 60 athletes and
- 1:39:15coaches that are following the training and then you have like
- 1:39:18a community board that I post things too and we have about 200
- 1:39:22seven coaches on that and then I have a therapist who puts, you
- 1:39:26know, therapy modalities for athletes.
- 1:39:29And it'll grow to, you know, I've got a distance coach that
- 1:39:33will. I'll end up doing distance.
- 1:39:35Will end up doing throws. Will end up going like Sprints
- 1:39:37and hurdles. I mean right now with Spencer
- 1:39:39goes and jumps and and so it's growing that for not just I call
- 1:39:44it the Amazon of coaching. So it's a One Stop Shop to be
- 1:39:49able to kind of get everything from the standpoint of training
- 1:39:53coaching education and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:39:56And so there's just thousands of hours of videos workouts,
- 1:39:59everything like that. So it will put the link in the
- 1:40:03show. Notes here, but tell us the the
- 1:40:05website again. So you can.
- 1:40:07Well, mb8 that Services is the training thing.
- 1:40:10But basically, like I'm also doing, we do two camps.
- 1:40:13We do a winter camp, December, 27, through 29 for high school
- 1:40:16kids and, you know, we allow a little bit of junior college
- 1:40:21kids like that, you know, kind of come in.
- 1:40:23And then we have a summer camp that will be in end of June and
- 1:40:26July. And you know I thought wow, you
- 1:40:29know, this will I started at late kind of whatever and we had
- 1:40:3330 kids, and they flew in from all over the country to come
- 1:40:36into the campground and Virginia taxes, all these different kind
- 1:40:39of things. So it's been kind of whatever
- 1:40:42every Monday, Wednesday we have speed training, but that's my
- 1:40:45thing. I do only eight to twelve year
- 1:40:47olds who won't do anything older than that.
- 1:40:48So we're teaching this Young Generation coordination, balance
- 1:40:54multi-directional learning how to do lifts and kind of thing
- 1:40:58like that. That's all the local kids.
- 1:41:00And the great thing about it is the at my athletes are working
- 1:41:03at my The cap is, and they get paid for it.
- 1:41:05So, they have a part-time job, they have some kind of things to
- 1:41:08it. So and then we have some, some
- 1:41:11little bit of Technical Training, we have a high jumper.
- 1:41:12So Richie McCoy helps out with some of the high jumpers and we
- 1:41:15also do like a plyometric explosive training, so,
- 1:41:18volleyball players and will come out to that.
- 1:41:20So it gives the athletes money so that they can, you know,
- 1:41:24survive and have a part-time job of it.
- 1:41:26It's not a lot. But, you know, they make
- 1:41:27anywhere from 1,500 to 2,000 a month, which allows them to stay
- 1:41:31in the sport grow Then, you know, we work with International
- 1:41:35athletes that's got a lot of different things so you can do
- 1:41:38the online, you can come to camps clinics.
- 1:41:40We do you know more specific training.
- 1:41:44I have about four or five that you know, pay a little bit more
- 1:41:46to do specific training with me and then we have international.
- 1:41:50So I have 10 International nine, International athletes that I
- 1:41:53work with myself and be sure. Ramsey my assistant at the
- 1:41:57center and then this year we had a couple baseball guys come in
- 1:42:00so far the football agents Andre Have to me, but we just don't
- 1:42:04have the bandwidth to do that this year.
- 1:42:06Unfortunately, will try to grow it some more, but yeah, I mean
- 1:42:11it's different sports different spectrums.
- 1:42:13I think is track coaches. We are the best Speed and
- 1:42:17Agility and Sprint coaches in the world.
- 1:42:18A man who really are? We, we spend so much time that
- 1:42:21we could tell, you, you know, acceleration, all that kind of
- 1:42:24stuff. And I think sometimes when
- 1:42:26coaches aren't in tractate or they're kind of scared to leave
- 1:42:30the Comforts of columns, whatever.
- 1:42:32Because there is a me There's nice to have a paycheck, a
- 1:42:35pension, to have all that kind of stuff, but there's so much
- 1:42:39more money to be made. If you take a, if you take, you
- 1:42:42know, if you're in the right place to be let's put it that
- 1:42:45way. So right, right.
- 1:42:46No offense. But I'm not going to be able to
- 1:42:48do the same thing from a coaching standpoint in Muncie.
- 1:42:52It's dry right? Yeah yeah.
- 1:42:56But there is you know, I'm seeing it more and more I'm
- 1:42:59seeing a lot more coaches. We've got out of the college
- 1:43:01coaching food, doing speed agility, New thing and they're
- 1:43:05doing well and they're thriving in doing.
- 1:43:07So it also sounds like, you know, if you're watching this on
- 1:43:10YouTube, you may be picked up on this because your face kind of
- 1:43:13lit up a little different to you.
- 1:43:14You know, for the past hour and 40 minutes here some great
- 1:43:18memories, you know, and no greater than the day, you met me
- 1:43:22in Boise, I understand that but some great memories.
- 1:43:25But when you described working with the eight to twelve year
- 1:43:27olds and working with your assistance Bashir Ramsey and
- 1:43:31things like that, it sounds like you're having a lot of fun.
- 1:43:33To it's so much fun. I the only thing, the only
- 1:43:37reason I stay it will be the best time in my life.
- 1:43:39Is I have a seven-month-old my first child and I've been the
- 1:43:43last 10 weeks I've been dad and it's a new challenge.
- 1:43:47And I honestly beating her dad is better than coaching a gold
- 1:43:53medalist and so and it just changed everything.
- 1:43:56So for me, this Avenue allows me not to have to go to 76 more
- 1:44:02countries. Spend that time away and I'm
- 1:44:05building for the future for us. And so exciting from our
- 1:44:11standpoint that way that, you know, yeah, she's going to live
- 1:44:15a different life than I did not that we were, you know, broken
- 1:44:18for. But, you know, we have
- 1:44:19everything in for me to be able to provide and 100% use my
- 1:44:23legacy and that, that's your job as a parent, make it better for
- 1:44:26them than what you had it. No matter how good or bad you
- 1:44:29had it. How do you do better for them in
- 1:44:31my queue? You heard the conversation.
- 1:44:34They always think they're spouse for raising their kids and I
- 1:44:38don't want to be that guy. I want to be the guy who gets to
- 1:44:41pick up his daughter from school or take her to school and pick
- 1:44:44her up whatever and this what I'm doing right now allows me to
- 1:44:49and I think he was like you know I'll be will be in for me Italy
- 1:44:52this summer and a training thing for you know five to six weeks
- 1:44:55and they're going to come over for a month and stuff like that.
- 1:44:58Wow. He's like that and you know will
- 1:45:02depending on if the Asian Games happened.
- 1:45:04Or not, they'll hopefully be able to come over and stuff.
- 1:45:06So those kind of things allow me to college, you know, you don't
- 1:45:11have as much freedom from that standpoint, I got to recruit,
- 1:45:15you got to do this and, you know, yeah, you're gone from 9
- 1:45:18in the morning and you get home at 5:00 or 6:00 and then you got
- 1:45:21to be on the phone after we cancel stuff.
- 1:45:24And I really being where a mad, I get to go into work about 9:00
- 1:45:299:30. And I'm, I won't be home at
- 1:45:32three or four because I love what I do and I probably stay a
- 1:45:35little bit longer but if I had to, I could be there.
- 1:45:38But every night I don't have to get on the phone and talk.
- 1:45:40All right there and be dad and you know, that's oh man.
- 1:45:44Yeah, so it's pretty. It's so awesome.
- 1:45:46Yeah. And actually we have Curtis
- 1:45:48speech is going to come out. He's I love him.
- 1:45:52Yeah, I'm excited to kind of get him in the fold of MBA and
- 1:45:59that's to we have our people right there.
- 1:46:02By the way, there is no other way.
- 1:46:04Yeah, that dudes, another level, you know, the cranes are going
- 1:46:06to come out, so I got him working some of the Koreans and
- 1:46:09stuff already and stuff like that and he's gonna have some
- 1:46:12Chinese athletes to work with. And so he's going to be a busy
- 1:46:14guy working with Mac Chris Mack and kind of coming over with me
- 1:46:17a little bit too good. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:46:20Well man Jeremy you know no need for a long time and then he's
- 1:46:24into your young and and it's just amazing to see your journey
- 1:46:29into here your journey and I love that.
- 1:46:32You know, here's what's so interesting.
- 1:46:33Acting to me, even at again, this age and stage of your life
- 1:46:36and what a, new stage year working in to hear as a parent,
- 1:46:40oh my goodness, there is no, there is no bigger harder,
- 1:46:43frustrating loving thing than than being a parent.
- 1:46:48So so, so happy and proud of you there, but it's so interesting.
- 1:46:52You know, all the things that you've done, all the things that
- 1:46:54you've accomplished and I know you.
- 1:46:56So I know I have to say this the things that you've helped others
- 1:46:59accomplish, I mean, you're a servant leader from the from the
- 1:47:02drop. So you know, all Things that
- 1:47:04you've helped other people accomplish that you've
- 1:47:05accomplished. And it feels like, like, if your
- 1:47:08story was a book, like, if I were reading your story, like, I
- 1:47:11might be done with chapter 3 because I know there are seven,
- 1:47:14eight, nine. You have such a great runway in
- 1:47:17front of you, man. It's going to be amazing to
- 1:47:18watch your daughter, grow up, and the experiences that you're
- 1:47:21going to give her. I mean, that's just fantastic.
- 1:47:24That's seven months old. And she's already been to the
- 1:47:28Bahamas and she's been to 12 States.
- 1:47:29So there you go. And she 7 months old.
- 1:47:32Yes. Get out of here.
- 1:47:33My kids can't hear that, they'll be, they'll be jelly like two
- 1:47:36states. Dad, what the heck?
- 1:47:37Christmas? They're going to Hawaii and
- 1:47:40yeah. Oh my goodness.
- 1:47:42Yeah, my kids have been to the Bourbon Trail and Kentucky.
- 1:47:44That's they're like, yeah. We've been there, but it's just
- 1:47:48so exciting to see, you know, you thriving and surviving and
- 1:47:53again, serving others in that with the journey.
- 1:47:56Just the story continues to be written like I can't wait to do
- 1:47:59a five-year ten-year, 15 year checkup with you and you know,
- 1:48:02more metals and even Importantly growing the sport and growing
- 1:48:06people's love of athleticism and what it can do for them, you
- 1:48:08know. Someone's going to go to a
- 1:48:10University of Wisconsin, like you didn't become a doctor
- 1:48:12because of the help that you've given them to earn scholarship
- 1:48:15or just the belief of like wait a minute, if my Coach can do it,
- 1:48:19why can't I do it? Why not me, right?
- 1:48:20So it's just amazing what you're doing for others, and what you
- 1:48:23have done for others again that that backside we don't even see
- 1:48:26the things with coaching education.
- 1:48:28And again, I just get this like, you know, the thought of just
- 1:48:31lifelong learner and servant leader.
- 1:48:33Man that's that to me is like that's what I would title your
- 1:48:36book so far, man. You know.
- 1:48:38I was like I have a great book that I will write one day and
- 1:48:42yes, nuances. And you know, just been super
- 1:48:47blessed people. Yeah.
- 1:48:48Or you know just experiences. So I'm going to share this one
- 1:48:51thing that it will be in my book, which would be kind of
- 1:48:54funny. Yes.
- 1:48:54Yes. And so it kind of just keeps me,
- 1:48:57you know, the humility in my life and stuff like that.
- 1:48:59And so I always like look at it. My, in seventh grade I went from
- 1:49:03It's a very kind of affluent area.
- 1:49:06I mean it has, you know, regular middle-class people but it
- 1:49:09there's a lot of wealthy people who live here and stuff.
- 1:49:11And so high school will go over 2,000 people and you know
- 1:49:16Mercedes benzes and Beamers and all this kind of stuff in the
- 1:49:18parking lot. And, you know, I walk to school
- 1:49:21and we didn't, you know, we had enough, but we didn't have a lot
- 1:49:23and it was what it was. And but in like sixth, seventh
- 1:49:27grade. My dad bought these, huge green
- 1:49:30Oldsmobile, right? It was like old use kind of
- 1:49:33thing. Thing and I was just tank,
- 1:49:36right? The things of both and if you
- 1:49:39know, for kids who have a lot, you know, it and not having a
- 1:49:46lot, it was embarrassing. It was like embarrassing to be
- 1:49:49dropped off in the car was like going to school and I'm like Dad
- 1:49:53you can stop me off here. You know, we'd be a time.
- 1:49:55When people see me, I'll run a mild into school just drop me
- 1:49:58off there. So it was a good looking car.
- 1:50:01But it was like you know, this He's green Oldsmobiles.
- 1:50:06Like we call it the green monster and and so that's cool.
- 1:50:10I'm totally embarrassed and kind of whatever.
- 1:50:12And I say this as perspective in the prison of the chapter will
- 1:50:16be perspective and so I my parents had me play like
- 1:50:20inner-city sports, you know, to kind of just you know just it
- 1:50:23was a good way to kind of keep ourselves whatever.
- 1:50:26So he was eighth grade summer before freshman year play like
- 1:50:29LA City summer league it keeps kids off the streets and
- 1:50:32everything else like that. So these Kids are from l.a., you
- 1:50:35know, they have, you know, they're poor government cheese,
- 1:50:38all that kind of stuff. And so there's big green car,
- 1:50:41I'm kind of embarrassed and my dads taking me and, you know,
- 1:50:43dropping me off and I show up my teammates are there and I'm
- 1:50:46like, oh God, I'm embarrassed, you know, whatever.
- 1:50:48So I get out of the car and all my teammates.
- 1:50:51Go Jeremy, that's you? Oh my god, that car is glad that
- 1:50:56cars sold. Oh my God.
- 1:50:57That that's 72 old. Oh my God, it's amazing.
- 1:51:01And I get out of the car and I'm like, yeah, you know, you How We
- 1:51:04Do, you know, kind of thing? You have you changed that story
- 1:51:07real quick there? Yeah.
- 1:51:10Well I was such a huge poser because I sat there and I was so
- 1:51:14embarrassed in the minute, you know, it was like I'm out front
- 1:51:17of my friends who think it's like, the cleanest car ever.
- 1:51:19I'm like yeah, you know, you know, and it's perspective,
- 1:51:23right? And so that's how you know, kind
- 1:51:26of I have other stories like that, but it was like
- 1:51:29perspective of, you know, it's the situation of where you're
- 1:51:33at. Right.
- 1:51:34You know, it's that watch thing. Where, you know, your Dad gives
- 1:51:37you watch, you take it to whatever it's worth a couple
- 1:51:39dollars, you take it to an antique shop and it's worth
- 1:51:4210,000 bucks. And so it was like the car.
- 1:51:44Yeah. You know in Camarillo where
- 1:51:46people don't appreciate things and our materialistic, it was
- 1:51:49embarrassing but when I went to someone who had nothing, it was
- 1:51:52an amazing car. And so that's the perspective,
- 1:51:55I've kind of been able to carry in my life.
- 1:51:57Is the fact of yes I can coach not a list.
- 1:52:00I can be this kind of thing or whatever else like that, but are
- 1:52:03you Human, are you giving back? Are you?
- 1:52:05You know, kind of whatever what you're, you're keeping in
- 1:52:08perspective. The fact that you're doing the
- 1:52:10most, you can as a coach and as a provider and stuff, and it's a
- 1:52:13teacher and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:52:14So, you know, that's, that's the chapter that will kind of, you
- 1:52:19know. All right, about perspective.
- 1:52:20So well, I'll tell you what, my friend knowing you for.
- 1:52:22As long as I have, you are a good human and gu is as much
- 1:52:26experience as you've had as much perspective as you certainly
- 1:52:29had, you bout to get, ya. See now that I'm a dad and I'm
- 1:52:32dead of two kids. And I get to give these like old
- 1:52:35man, grabbed you help me like for any help that you could have
- 1:52:47had, but you bout to get some perspective being dad and be a
- 1:52:52dad that dot. My first kid was a saint and
- 1:52:55then my second one's a daughter and oh, my good, it's amazing
- 1:52:57how different they can be and how they tug on your strings and
- 1:53:01frustrate the ever living out of you.
- 1:53:03All unique way, so we are. Oh yeah.
- 1:53:07Oh yeah, yeah. That's they joke about that.
- 1:53:09But it's, that's like one of those things that's like, oh,
- 1:53:10you know, that's kind of real. That's that actually does kind
- 1:53:13of handy when she's with Mom. She doesn't cry.
- 1:53:15She's put down. She just kind of whatever, but
- 1:53:17if I'm around and she's put down when I did it to myself.
- 1:53:24Oh man, Jerry man. Thank you so much.
- 1:53:27What a blast, this is so funny. Kicking off season for here with
- 1:53:31us last week. We had the Great Dane path this
- 1:53:33week. Jimmy.
- 1:53:33Fisher. It's going to be hard to follow
- 1:53:36you to whoever the next one is gonna be like, oh, thanks.
- 1:53:38Thanks for helping letting me follow these two guys.
- 1:53:40So, but just so thankful for you, man.
- 1:53:43So thankful for our friendship and honestly, thankful for, not
- 1:53:47the things that people can easily see that you've done.
- 1:53:50You know, the coaching will and Brittany, you know, to amazing
- 1:53:53human beings on their own, right?
- 1:53:55You know what you did at OU and Northridge.
- 1:53:57That's, that's great. And that's, that's, that's
- 1:53:59awesome. But honestly for a guy like me
- 1:54:01who, you know, my bread and butter my My livelihood, not my
- 1:54:05livelihood. But my passion was the coach and
- 1:54:08education side. Knowing what you did, we touched
- 1:54:111% of what you've done on that level, that I'm just so thankful
- 1:54:14for that. That's something that happens
- 1:54:16and has to happen that some people don't realize someone has
- 1:54:18to actually sit down in the chair and right, and someone has
- 1:54:20to actually teach in the preparation that it takes to
- 1:54:23teach. So just that whole body of work
- 1:54:25at such, a young age, my friend, just so thankful, man.
- 1:54:28So grateful for what you do for all of us in track and field and
- 1:54:32what you do for your family needs.
- 1:54:33It's a it's quite amazing. I'm just so so grateful for you.
- 1:54:36Yeah, no I appreciate you. Having me and definitely and
- 1:54:40look forward to seeing you down the road.
- 1:54:42So awesome. Absolutely a friend.
- 1:54:43Well, thank you very much story. Anytime anytime you want to come
- 1:54:46back and do a part 2, you want to do like a five-year-old.
- 1:54:48Check up with her. We'll talk about how that's been
- 1:54:51getting. You think you start school?
- 1:54:52That's its it. Never stops man.
- 1:54:54It never stops. Well, this never stops here at
- 1:54:57the Gil connections podcast again, just so grateful that you
- 1:55:00choose to listen to us. The I say it Ad nauseam.
- 1:55:04I know it's on purpose. I know the Gill connections
- 1:55:07podcast is not an easy podcast to listen to.
- 1:55:10This is not a 20-minute chunk. This is not a thing, even a one
- 1:55:13hour podcast, this is call it two hours every week with just
- 1:55:17amazing human beings and the reason we do it for this long is
- 1:55:19because these guys and gals deserve it, their story is not a
- 1:55:2320-minute segment their stories, not an hour segment.
- 1:55:25Heck we touch kind of surface level in 2 hours and so I'm just
- 1:55:29thankful that you come every week and listen to these amazing
- 1:55:32Journeys. Their story matters and I hope
- 1:55:35you are challenged. I hope you are encouraged by
- 1:55:38what they have gone through, what they go through, and what
- 1:55:41they continue to do for our sport.
- 1:55:43So join us next week when we pick another coach out of the
- 1:55:45Hat, see who comes onto the show and uplift, an honor, their
- 1:55:48Journey have a great week everybody.
