Gene Evin Atkins, already convicted on 40 charges, was found guilty of second-degree murder in the 2018 shootout outside a Trader Joe’s that killed 27-year-old store assistant Melyda Corado. After crashing his grandmother’s car and fleeing into the store, Atkins engaged in a gunfight with police, during which Corado was fatally shot by an LAPD officer.
