- 0:00Welcome to Pick Up and Deliver the podcast where I pick up my audio recorder as I step
- 0:08off the train and deliver an episode to you while I walk home.
- 0:11I'm Brendan Riley.
- 0:12[music]
- 0:13Well, good afternoon listeners.
- 0:22It's a lovely day here in suburban Chicago.
- 0:24I'm strolling home from work and happy to talk to you about board games.
- 0:29Ha! tricked you.
- 0:30It's not actually going to be about board games today.
- 0:31It's going to be about movies.
- 0:33That's right, it's been 12 episodes or so since I did an episode talking about movies
- 0:38and it's been another month since then.
- 0:40So I'm going to talk about some movies I watched.
- 0:43That's right, it's the film roundup episode.
- 0:45Now as I often do, I will try to think about what would make a good game pairing thematically
- 0:51if you want to do a game and movie night.
- 0:53But in reality, this is the movie review episode.
- 0:56So if that's not your bag, sorry about that.
- 0:59Hopefully you'll enjoy it.
- 1:00Unless otherwise, see you next time.
- 1:03So I thought I would today, I would talk about the six movies that I watched in February
- 1:07and reflect a little bit on what I thought of them and give my opinion.
- 1:12Alright, so to start with, this one is one a lot of people saw.
- 1:16This was Oppenheimer.
- 1:17From a technical perspective, Oppenheimer is of course an excellent movie.
- 1:21I enjoyed watching it as is true for me of all Christopher Nolan films.
- 1:25I've yet to have one that I didn't actually just enjoy.
- 1:29I'm not sure, I know a lot of people thought, "Tenet was kind of inscrutable."
- 1:33I did not find it to be that way.
- 1:35I, whatever sort of weird, strange loops that Christopher Nolan puts into his narratives,
- 1:42I generally find pretty comprehensible.
- 1:44And so maybe it's middle-aged white dude to middle-aged white dude.
- 1:49I can really sympathize with his view of weirdness in the world.
- 1:53So from a technical perspective, I really appreciated the way it's made.
- 1:57He does a nice job of building up these three parallel stories from three different time
- 2:01points in Oppenheimer's life and sort of tracking them simultaneously.
- 2:06It makes for an interesting narrative that is not linear.
- 2:12Of course all the actors in the film do a really good job.
- 2:14I particularly like to Matt Damon's performance.
- 2:17I think he does a really good job of playing sort of somebody who's a bit annoyed and just
- 2:24trying to do their best in the face of insanity.
- 2:28And that felt like what's happening with the Matt Damon character.
- 2:31I really liked that small part.
- 2:34Of course, Cillian Murphy did an excellent job as many people have recognized.
- 2:40I was irritated but not surprised by how little room was given for female actors to do much
- 2:48work at all.
- 2:49It's not uncommon for Christopher Nolan's stories to give relatively little space for women.
- 2:55And this one is another of those.
- 2:58I thought Emily Blunt did a pretty amazing job in the short time she had as his wife.
- 3:03And the woman who played the girlfriend, oh I can't remember her name.
- 3:08She was Black Widow's sister in the Black Widow movie.
- 3:12She is a pretty big star right now and I'm kind of ashamed that I don't remember her name
- 3:17but I thought she did a good job as well for what limited space they were given.
- 3:22You know, there's a lot of commentary about this movie being amazing, right?
- 3:26And it won all sorts of accolades.
- 3:28I mean, I thought it was good but I don't really get why people thought it was so incredible.
- 3:34Apart because I guess just for me like the subject matter feels really covered.
- 3:39I don't know how people are having new views or new ideas about what the atomic bomb was at
- 3:44this point.
- 3:45So maybe I've just read or encountered more of it than your average filmgoer or maybe people
- 3:52just hadn't thought about it in the same way.
- 3:54I don't know.
- 3:55I don't know.
- 3:56But the broad remit of the film did not strike me as incredibly unusual.
- 4:04And so like I said, nice job all the pieces but the story itself was I guess sort of what
- 4:11I thought it would be.
- 4:12And so it's hard to really see it as the amazing thing everybody seems to think it is when
- 4:17it was what I expected it would be.
- 4:20So that's Oppenheimer, three and a half stars.
- 4:25The next film is a small indie film called The Vast of Night.
- 4:29The loose premise is we follow a couple teenagers in a small town in America in the 1950s when
- 4:36something weird is going on and there might be aliens.
- 4:40The central points of the film are a radio station where one of the teenagers has
- 4:48a job as a disc jockey, disc jockey and the phone switchboard where one of the other teenagers
- 4:56has an evening job as a switchboard operator.
- 4:58The premise is really it works really well.
- 5:01It's sort of like the Orson Welles' War of the Worlds in that it's a series of sort of
- 5:08sounds that they hear and incomplete reports and the chaos of not knowing what's going
- 5:15on sort of shapes the experience.
- 5:18The two young actors do a really good job sort of portraying this compelling state and
- 5:24there's a lot of running around in confusion.
- 5:27There's a really interesting drone shot that follows the characters into like a high school
- 5:33gym where there's a high school basketball game playing.
- 5:35All these people cheering and the drone kind of zooms in and zooms around and zooms back
- 5:39out.
- 5:40It's a really neat shot that you couldn't you just couldn't do before drones and cameras
- 5:45got a lot smaller and cheaper.
- 5:47So this movie is clearly made on a reasonably small budget but really compelling and just
- 5:53an interesting film.
- 5:54So like actually give it four stars.
- 5:56Oppenheimer is this big thing that did what I thought it would do.
- 6:01The Vast of Night just felt it came out the story a little different.
- 6:04I really liked it.
- 6:05The Vast of Night.
- 6:06That's a 2019 film.
- 6:08Next up this is a film I watched after I watched The Vast of Night.
- 6:11I found I just had an evening to myself and I watched The Vast of Night on Amazon Prime
- 6:16and I had some more time and I was you know how after you watch a movie there's like a
- 6:21list of movies you might like down below.
- 6:23So I started watching that or going through that.
- 6:25And you know a lot of the movies were ones and two stars maybe a three star occasionally.
- 6:30Then I came across this movie called Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes.
- 6:33It was like five stars and I said to myself well or maybe four stars four and a half
- 6:38but way higher than the other movies around it in this list.
- 6:42And then upon examining it more closely I see it's a Japanese movie it's in Japanese.
- 6:46You have to watch it with subtitles and I'm like oh American unwillingness to watch
- 6:50subtitles that's where that's why it's down among these movies people don't want to watch
- 6:55even though it's very well rated.
- 6:56So I gave it a try and of all the movies I'm talking about this month this is the one you
- 7:00should watch if you're only going to watch one.
- 7:02Beyond The Infinite Two Minutes is a really interesting film about time travel kind of
- 7:08the premise and I'm not giving away anything that's not clear in the first two minutes or
- 7:12five minutes of the film.
- 7:14The premise is that there's a TV in this diner and this TV in this guy's apartment which
- 7:19is upstairs from the diner and those TVs are connected to one another.
- 7:23There's a two minute delay between the TV and the diner and a TV in the house and the
- 7:31big thing is that it's not just like the signal takes two minutes to get from one to the
- 7:35other.
- 7:37I guess that is kind of what is going on the signal takes two minutes to get from one
- 7:40other but that you can see through them.
- 7:44You can see from one to the other.
- 7:46So the if you are where the if you are where the past TV is you can see two minutes into
- 7:53the future is the best way I can explain it.
- 7:56So it's not a two minute delay it's actually two minutes in the future.
- 7:59It's an instantaneous two minute gap and the whole movie is sort of about what would happen
- 8:03if you had access to this and what how would you what would you do with it and it's a nice
- 8:08little bottle episode of a movie.
- 8:11It seems to have been shot probably on a handheld camera and if not in one take it was it's
- 8:17cheated into looking like one take.
- 8:20There's a lot of going up and down the stairs in the camera following them and stuff happening
- 8:24in really interesting ways.
- 8:26It's a very thoughtfully produced movie really fun and something you should definitely check
- 8:29out if you can.
- 8:30It's called Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes.
- 8:33That's my only five star of the month.
- 8:34That's from 2020 and I watched it on Amazon Prime.
- 8:37Well we're at our commercial break or we're at three minutes there are three movies that's
- 8:42halfway in and I realize I have yet to suggest any games to go with these movies but I will
- 8:47suggest them now.
- 8:48So Oppenheimer it feels like the game to suggest to that would be Manhattan Project.
- 8:54I don't have that one.
- 8:56If you were coming to my house and said Brendan I want to play whatever you have that's
- 8:59closest, that's Manhattan Project Energy Empire which is a related game but not in the direct
- 9:05project.
- 9:06Manhattan Project would be the one to play.
- 9:08That game is probably very difficult to find now.
- 9:11It was originally published by minion games and of course minion games folded when James
- 9:15Mathe sadly passed away.
- 9:17Some of the games have been picked up for printing but for the most part that concern went when
- 9:23he passed away.
- 9:24So that's sad.
- 9:25So I haven't played Manhattan Project.
- 9:27I can't say whether it's any good.
- 9:29I know that Manhattan Project Energy Empire is very good and I enjoyed a lot.
- 9:33So that's for Oppenheimer.
- 9:34The Vast of Night.
- 9:35I'm going to say the visitor at Blackwood Grove.
- 9:38This is a small social deduction game where one player plays an alien and the other player
- 9:44plays a child trying to communicate with the alien and there's humans trying to communicate
- 9:51or the government is trying to intercept it and there's basically the goal is the child
- 9:56or the children is to communicate with the alien before the government intercepts those
- 9:59communications.
- 10:00It's a sort of deduction game, a competitive deduction game that's weird and interesting
- 10:06and I enjoyed it the one time I played it but there's not really room in my collection
- 10:09for it so it did go away.
- 10:11But if you get a chance, this is a return back.
- 10:14And Blackwood Grove would fit the Vast of Night.
- 10:17For beyond the infinite two minutes, I think that time you killed me has to be the game
- 10:21that I would play in connection because that game is so specifically about anticipating
- 10:25what happens when you move on one place in another place and thinking two or three moves
- 10:30ahead but also two or three boards ahead.
- 10:33I've had a number of games of that where I won or lost based on somebody not seeing that
- 10:38if you jumped from one board to another you could take their piece out and if you're already
- 10:41missing from one of the boards then that's it.
- 10:44Really interesting game, well worth playing if you get a chance that's that time you killed
- 10:49me.
- 10:50Alright three more movies, I'll talk about a game after each one because I don't know
- 10:52if I'll get to all three.
- 10:54Now the first one is The Lost King.
- 10:56This falls in the category of the British know how to make heartwarming, pleasant stories
- 11:01with a low dramatic arc movies.
- 11:03Reminds me of the Bank of Dave a little bit.
- 11:06In The Lost King, we have the story of a amateur archaeologist and fan of King Richard
- 11:14the third who led the campaign to try and find the place where King Richard was probably
- 11:20buried and in fact did find the place where King Richard was buried.
- 11:25This is a true story.
- 11:26Of course the academic bureaucracy got in the way and it sort of frustrating to watch her
- 11:32chafe against these systems of expertise so that prevent outsiders from participating.
- 11:38As an academic though, I also reflected a little bit on the fact that people with
- 11:44outformal training or without enough training will sort of stick their oar in whether or
- 11:49not they really know what they're talking about and so there's an interesting back and
- 11:53forth about that in this movie.
- 11:55It's clearly on the side of the amateur though and frankly so am I if nothing else because
- 12:00the movie makes the bureaucrats look like jerks.
- 12:03That's The Lost King from 2022.
- 12:06I don't know what game would go with this I guess.
- 12:09Tobago maybe I think is a game where you are trying to find a lost treasure that is buried
- 12:15and you're running around trying to find clues to find where to dig for it that probably
- 12:20works.
- 12:21I think it's Tobago.
- 12:22It might be Kahuna.
- 12:23I can't remember.
- 12:25If you know what I'm talking about let me know it's a game where each person draws a
- 12:29clue and those clues then reduce the number of places that the treasure could be until
- 12:33somebody manages to figure out where the treasure is and get their truck there first.
- 12:38So it's definitely a game that's been around a while I can't remember what it's called.
- 12:41It's something like Kahuna.
- 12:43It's not Kahuna.
- 12:44I feel like Tobago maybe but that doesn't seem right either.
- 12:47I guess we were on a kick for missing things because then we rewatched the Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatem
- 12:53romantic comedy, The Lost City.
- 12:56This movie was basically just Romancing the Stone again.
- 12:59I like that movie a lot and I like this one as well.
- 13:02In that one, Romancing the Stone, Michael Douglas plays a rather sexist adventurer type
- 13:09and in The Lost City, Sandra Bullock is the judgmental type who looks at the sort of
- 13:15ditsy body builder character Channing Tatem with judgmental eyes.
- 13:21So this is a duel.
- 13:23This is sort of reversal of that trope.
- 13:25You got Daniel Radcliffe chewing the scenery.
- 13:26He has a goofy villain.
- 13:30He's got all that dissimilar from the character he played in Now You See Me 2.
- 13:34Both of them sort of hilariously evil.
- 13:36And I like Daniel Radcliffe taking just kind of whatever part he feels like.
- 13:40He's got a lot of range and he shows it.
- 13:42The Lost City also has a fantastic cameo from Brad Pitt.
- 13:46Well, not cameo but small part from Brad Pitt and really funny chase sequences.
- 13:50So if you haven't seen The Lost City, I recommend it.
- 13:53It's very funny.
- 13:54As a game to go with it I would say the Explorers is perhaps the Temple of Chac which is the
- 13:58one that has the rolling boulder in the pits of lava.
- 14:02It fits this game really well.
- 14:03That would be a nice pairing.
- 14:06Like Romance of the Stone that game has a fair amount of misogyny or at least sexism built
- 14:10into the art design.
- 14:12I guess you could excuse the game a little bit because it's French but mostly it's just
- 14:16like the female characters are all drawn pretty buxom.
- 14:20Nonetheless the Temple of Chac is a pretty fun game if you can get a hold of it.
- 14:23It's long out of print unfortunately so not a game you're going to find most places.
- 14:28If you come to visit me we could play it.
- 14:30So that would go with The Lost City.
- 14:32And then finally just a quick word for Jay Barruchel in Blackberry which
- 14:38is a relatively simple tech bros trying to solve a problem becoming famous.
- 14:45Rise and fall of a tech company story.
- 14:49Starting Jay Barruchel as the tech genius behind the Research In Motion and the company
- 14:54the Blackberry.
- 14:55That was a pretty entertaining story.
- 14:58I enjoyed watching that.
- 15:00It is kind of what you expected.
- 15:02There's a great scene where the skeptical businessman says you know that's a problem you
- 15:07can't solve and they say well we solved it ha ha and that's always fun.
- 15:11Lots of good information there.
- 15:14So not a whole lot to say about that movie.
- 15:17It is kind of what you'd expect it to be.
- 15:19Tech bros solving problems getting rich then the downfall of those same tech bros
- 15:24works really well.
- 15:25I guess if I was going to recommend the game not having played it obviously Smartphone Inc
- 15:28seems like the game you would play to go along with watching the movie Blackberry
- 15:34because they're both about you know Blackberries and related products.
- 15:39Well I became to hear what movies you've been watching in the last couple months.
- 15:43Those are the movies I watched in February 2024.
- 15:46In order to share that information with me you can head over to boardgamegeek guild 3269
- 15:50and I'd love to learn what movies you've been watching.
- 15:53Until next time.
- 15:54Thanks for joining me.
- 15:55I hope your next walk was as pleasant as mine was.
- 15:57Bye bye.
