- 0:07Welcome to Hot Takes with the Murph Man.
- 0:10Today in episode 49 we are talking about the Professional
- 0:13Development plan, charting your career growth.
- 0:16A job is what you're paid to do now.
- 0:19A career is the sum of your professional journey, a
- 0:22professional development plan. PDP is your personal road map,
- 0:26turning your career aspirations from a vague dream into an
- 0:29actionable strategy. The fuse is lit.
- 0:33Murph, man, take the mic. Like like we said, you know, we
- 0:43have the the career choice that we make and I started off in the
- 0:52arcade. I started off as a cardboy at
- 0:55Kmart. I started off working in the
- 0:57floor cashier. That has nothing to do with what
- 1:01I'm doing right now. Can we agree on that?
- 1:03Yeah. And that's where that career
- 1:05comes from. OK, A career is the some of your
- 1:09professional journey, but a professional development plan is
- 1:13your personal road map on how to have a career that's successful.
- 1:18OK, the PDP, that's what we're going to be talking about.
- 1:21And we never start at the beginning, right?
- 1:27We don't really think about our career at 151617 years old.
- 1:34I have students that work with on NHS that know what they want
- 1:38to do. Like I have one guy who wants to
- 1:39be a doctor, one wants to be a pilot.
- 1:41You know, there's, there's things like that, like the one
- 1:44girl wants to be a pilot. She's an amazing student and
- 1:46everything, and her parents are pilots, so it's pretty natural
- 1:50that you become a pilot, right? Yeah.
- 1:54Because one is fun, but two, she already has the parents who've
- 1:58been in there, so she already knows what the career is like,
- 2:01and she already knows if she's wants to be in it or not.
- 2:04Yeah. So it's one of those things that
- 2:08you have to ask yourself if you're at the, the, the point in
- 2:19career where you're ready to take that step and move further
- 2:22ahead or to change your gears. OK.
- 2:28So let's let's go ahead and let's do the burning question
- 2:32and we will see what the question is for today.
- 2:45Are you fit or are you ADD? The best way to ask today's
- 2:51burning question is what is a skill gap?
- 2:54First choice is A the difference between your skills and a Co
- 2:59worker skills. Then B the difference between
- 3:02the skills you have and the skills you need for your next
- 3:06role. Or is it C the skills you learn
- 3:09in college? Maybe it's D the skills you
- 3:13learn on the job. Murph man, we are ready to hear
- 3:18what the flashpoint is. All right, So what is the skills
- 3:24gap Connor? OK, that's what they really talk
- 3:26about here. We have the difference between
- 3:28you, your skills and a Co worker skills or between the skills
- 3:32that you have and the skills you need or the skills you learn in
- 3:36college or the skills you learn on the job.
- 3:38What do you think it is? I think it's be the difference
- 3:42between the skills you have and the skills you need for the next
- 3:44role. Exactly.
- 3:47And when we have the the gap, all right, of what do we know?
- 3:54What do we need to know? You know, I'll give you an
- 3:56example. When I started counseling at the
- 3:57runaway shelter, I have been doing counseling in the Army.
- 4:00I had worked with a programs, I've supervised programs.
- 4:03I've done all that. And all of a sudden, I was in a
- 4:09counseling position with kids that I had never, ever thought I
- 4:17would do. OK, I had a huge skill gap, but
- 4:26I was able to get the other skills that I had and morph them
- 4:36into becoming a counselor for kids.
- 4:39So I had the skills. I just need to learn how to
- 4:42apply it to students and to kids.
- 4:46And working with families was also new to me, you know, So
- 4:51that was another skill gap I had.
- 4:52Does that mean I didn't know my job?
- 4:54No, it's just there's certain things you have to learn how to
- 4:57do that. If you've never been exposed to
- 5:00them, you have to learn them, right?
- 5:03For example, if you were to say when you get had your job at the
- 5:08movie theater, did you really know how everything worked in
- 5:12the movie theater? No, you had no clue.
- 5:15We have never been exposed to that, right?
- 5:17You had a skills gap and you had to learn how to do that.
- 5:20One of my favorite things I talk about is shopping carts.
- 5:23And what do I tell you every time I see people pushing
- 5:25shopping carts now? They they're lucky that they
- 5:29have the little. The little robot machine that
- 5:31pushes it for them, They just started, right?
- 5:35Yeah. Well, I think it's funny because
- 5:38there's so much that there, there's so much going on, OK.
- 5:47And you, you, you don't know it because you just never been
- 5:52exposed to it. Exactly.
- 5:54You know, I want to give a shout out to Cassie real quick.
- 5:58She's over here giving us wave lights and hand hearts and Cupid
- 6:03koalas. Thank you very much for that,
- 6:05Cassie. Much appreciated.
- 6:07Thank. You.
- 6:08And then gels just joined. Welcome gels.
- 6:11How we doing everybody? You know, as as you talk about
- 6:16all this, right? And your skills are something
- 6:18you don't know it. It's not a bad thing because you
- 6:23you've never been exposed to it. All right, so let's talk about
- 6:27today's hot take and let's see what I have to say about this.
- 6:41Fitting in leads to burnout. Today's hot take is this
- 6:46Focusing on the skill gap for the job above you is the only
- 6:50way to earn a promotion. If you are only focused on
- 6:53mastering the tasks you are currently paid for, you are
- 6:56implicitly telling the organization you are comfortable
- 6:59staying right where you are. All right, so today's hot take
- 7:10fighting fitting in leads to burnout value is your only
- 7:15relevant metric. How important are you to the
- 7:18job, right? And focusing on the skill gap
- 7:23for the job you always is your way to earn a promotion.
- 7:29OK, If you see your, your career path, right and you have a skill
- 7:37gap and you work toward it, you're focused on mastering the
- 7:41tasks you're currently paid for. And you are also telling the
- 7:46organization you are comfortable staying right where you are
- 7:51because you're learning, right? There's, there's some things you
- 7:54can do that just do not matter, right?
- 7:58They don't matter at all. And that's why I think it's so
- 8:00funny is everything we do at work, everything we do at work
- 8:06is so important that you need to learn it and you need to be able
- 8:10to have it. So what do you think about that,
- 8:14Connor? You know, you got to show that
- 8:17your boss that you're actually doing what you need to do to
- 8:21keep your job. Yeah, that's obviously one of
- 8:25the key points you need to do in order to have a job.
- 8:29Right. Is to make sure that your boss
- 8:31knows what you're doing. Last week, you know we've been
- 8:33talking about managing up, talking to your boss, letting
- 8:36you know what's going on, reporting to your boss.
- 8:41But also what do they see? OK, when you learn a new skill
- 8:51you should let your boss know. Not it depends on what skill.
- 8:55Well, well, yeah, you. Know that doesn't.
- 8:57Configure I learned how to use a Coke machine OK.
- 8:59Yeah. Right.
- 9:00But hey, I cleaned the popcorn machine for the first time.
- 9:05That's a big one. Earlier I was saying what do I
- 9:08hate most about this? The shopping cart boys.
- 9:10Look, today they had that machine.
- 9:12I had to push metal carts. They didn't have the lower
- 9:15weight cards. They were heavy and there was a
- 9:19lot of them. And I didn't have a string on
- 9:21one end to hold it with a hook. I had to run and stop it from
- 9:26hitting cars if they got away from me.
- 9:28And then I had to do that in the rain and the snow, the heat, it
- 9:31didn't matter. Hearts had to come in.
- 9:34And I've told you stories about like during Christmas holidays,
- 9:38there were no carts available. And I told you we went to Sam's,
- 9:44they point out how many carts they have.
- 9:46No, no, I forgot to do that. But if you go at Christmas,
- 9:52there'll be maybe 4 carts available.
- 9:55And it's, it's crazy. I just being a cart boy, I have
- 9:58respect for them because they do a lot more than anything.
- 10:02And when you just leave your cart lane somewhere, that's not
- 10:04fair to everybody, is it? You know?
- 10:07So let's let's go ahead and take a quick break.
- 10:11And when we come back, we're going to talk about those colds
- 10:14that we can have that will let us define more of what we're
- 10:21going to be doing today. So stay tuned, we'll be right
- 10:23back. It's time for a break.
- 10:25Hot takes with the Murph man will return.

- 10:46According to the V as Suicide Data report, an average of 22
- 10:50veterans die by suicide every single day.
- 10:53This figure is a sobering reality and a crisis that
- 10:56demands our immediate attention and compassion.
- 10:59We must recognize and address the fact that every 24 hours, 22
- 11:03veterans are losing their lives to suicide.
- 11:07The war doesn't always end when our veterans come home.
- 11:09The invisible wounds they carry, wounds that are real and heavy,
- 11:13require continuous support. No veteran should have to carry
- 11:17this burden alone. Many veterans experience stress

- 13:40Opinions expressed in this. Before we get back to the show,
- 13:43we pause for something that matters to the Murph man deeply.
- 13:46He was inspired by Ryan Spencer's song Make 22 Zero.
- 13:50Again, I'd like to remind you that help is always available

- 14:17again. I'm telling you right now, it is
- 14:19real. If you need help down 98 and
- 14:22press 1. Someone will be there for you
- 14:2524/7, 365 or 366 in the leap year.
- 14:29Yes. All right, real quick.
- 14:32Let's see if you remember where's the world's largest leap
- 14:34year celebration. I have no idea.
- 14:37And Anthony? I don't remember that.
- 14:41Who cares about Anthony? Oh, if it's the world's largest
- 14:45celebration, we should go there. Do you know where the world's
- 14:49largest alien convention is? I forgot the city.
- 14:53Roswell, Yeah. All right, we live like we live
- 14:56between these cities. So all right, you guys, let's
- 14:59talk about those definitions that we need to learn today so
- 15:01we can discuss this episode. Decoding corporate norms Now
- 15:13before we dig in, let's clarify some of the key terms we'll be
- 15:17using today while laying down the coals.
- 15:19Professional Development Plan PDPA structured document that
- 15:24outlines your career goals and the steps you'll take to achieve
- 15:27them. Skill gap analysis identifying
- 15:30the skills you currently have versus the skills you need to
- 15:33reach your next career milestone.
- 15:35SMART goals Goals that are specific, measurable,
- 15:39achievable, relevant, and time bound.
- 15:43Now that the coals are laid, Murph man, let's discuss the
- 15:46foundation all. Right, yes, let's do that.
- 15:51So we have the first term Professional Development Plan,
- 15:56PDP. This is a structured document
- 15:59that means it's written down that outlines your career goals
- 16:02and the steps you take to achieve them.
- 16:06Next is a skill gap analysis, identifying those skills you
- 16:10currently have versus the skills you need to reach to your next
- 16:13career milestone. And last but not least, SMART
- 16:17goals. Goals that are specific,
- 16:19measurable, achievable, relevant and time bound.
- 16:22Let's talk about those real quick.
- 16:24And starting off with the professional development plan
- 16:27being written down. Why should we write it down?
- 16:32I don't know, it's better to see it instead of trying to remember
- 16:37it. Right, like that, the steps
- 16:40don't change. You can also add to it or take
- 16:41away from it, right? But you also have something
- 16:46written, something real, something you can see, you know,
- 16:51many, many, many years ago, I don't even know if it's still a
- 16:53thing. There was this thing called
- 16:54Amway and they used to sell products, home products fairly
- 16:59cheap or cheaper, but they were better quality.
- 17:03So you had to use less, they were more concentrated.
- 17:05Whatever it was, it was just a multi level marketing scheme
- 17:09where I would be an Amway seller.
- 17:11I'd be like Connor, you can make money here.
- 17:13You make 30% off everything you sell.
- 17:15You're like sounds easy, sign me up.
- 17:19You know to pay a monthly dues, right?
- 17:21Well, I get paid of what you make.
- 17:26I get my percentage and. Your percentage would be.
- 17:29I don't know. Just but The thing is you would
- 17:32then go higher and try to get 5 people so you can get their
- 17:35percentages right. But I get some of their
- 17:38percentages from you. That's why it's called multi
- 17:41level marketing. No, you get, well, yeah, you get
- 17:48some of their percentages, but you just get it from mine.
- 17:52No. Yes.
- 17:54I'm telling you, the way it worked was everybody that signed
- 17:57up, I'd get a certain percentage point like it would go, I'd get
- 18:005 percent, 4%, three percent, 2% or whatever that I don't know
- 18:03what it was. OK, so the more people I signed
- 18:06up I I'd make more money. People that I would sign.
- 18:10Up and then you would make more money by more people.
- 18:13You sign up and that was really the thing.
- 18:14It wasn't about selling the products.
- 18:17You know, back in the day they also had long distance companies
- 18:22that would give you cheaper rates.
- 18:24OK, So you had to sign up with the company and you'd get their
- 18:29rates. Well, I could say sign up for
- 18:33this amount of money and I get a percentage of it.
- 18:35So I started selling that, you know, but it was it really.
- 18:40I didn't sell squat and I had so much of that stuff, all that
- 18:43equipment that I bought in my original kit.
- 18:46It was crazy, right? And I, I didn't make any money
- 18:55and we got out of it fairly quickly.
- 18:57But one thing that I liked about what they did was they had this
- 19:01diamond level that meant you had so many people working under
- 19:03you. And that's where that percentage
- 19:07rose. I talked about, right?
- 19:08So at every level I get a percentage up to a certain
- 19:11point. And at that diamond level, when
- 19:13I had so many people working under me, you know that that was
- 19:16the goal. And they, they made us.
- 19:19Well, they didn't make us, but they suggested we put up diamond
- 19:22pictures all over the house. Why do you think you'd want to
- 19:27do that? I don't know.
- 19:29A constant reminder of your goal everywhere you go.
- 19:32And what have I told you? If you want a Corvette, put a
- 19:36picture of a Corvette in your room every morning.
- 19:38You look up and you're like, that's my goal for, you know,
- 19:41see what I mean? I guess, yeah.
- 19:45It's a reminder of what you want and having a professional
- 19:50development plan written down and something you can review
- 19:54every now and then. Make it a goal to review it
- 19:56every Friday and ask yourself this week, did I do the steps I
- 20:00needed to get to make my plan viable?
- 20:07And if you did, sorry, puberty sucks very good.
- 20:12If you did do everything right, you're going to, OK, I did good.
- 20:15Let's go to the next week and see what I got to do next week
- 20:18and review it every two or three weeks like that and ask
- 20:20yourself, am I doing what I need to do?
- 20:22What else do I need to add, You know, and that's why you write
- 20:25it down, OK. The other part of that was the
- 20:31skill gap, identifying the skills you have versus the
- 20:35skills you need and how you going to get there.
- 20:39What do you think is the the hardest thing to do when you
- 20:41have a skill gap from your point of view?
- 20:45Learning the skill. Learning the skill, but how are
- 20:49you going to learn it if you don't know it?
- 20:51You have to ask for help and asking for help for one thing
- 20:58it's hard for a lot of people asking for help from a Co
- 21:01worker. When you say I don't know how to
- 21:02do this, can you help me? Right.
- 21:07And just there's a gap and you need to learn it somehow.
- 21:15Ask for help, ask for the manual, read the manual, talk to
- 21:19people, see what's going on that you can interact there with your
- 21:24Co workers and learn that new thing.
- 21:26All right, it's very, very important.
- 21:29All right. And the last part is the smart
- 21:32goal. Now let's see Connor out of
- 21:34memory. Do you remember what the acronym
- 21:39SMART stood for? What is stood for SMART Goals?
- 21:46SMART stands for a specific, measurable, achievable, relevant
- 21:51and time bound. That is.
- 21:57From what I learned from school. That's correct.
- 22:01What do you think is the most important part there?
- 22:04Is it the specific, measurable, achievable, relevant or time
- 22:08bound? I would say all of it, but if I
- 22:12had to choose one, achievable. Achievable.
- 22:15OK, let let's talk about that. I I love talking about this this
- 22:23specifically. OK.
- 22:27You say it to you, Well, we'll get to that in a little bit, but
- 22:29let me go over each one specific.
- 22:32You need to have a goal that is very specific about what you're
- 22:35trying to get to, right? Trying to get more listeners,
- 22:38trying to get more followers interacting with people,
- 22:44whatever that happens to be for us in the podcast personally.
- 22:48Being able to fix up the house, add the other bedrooms we want
- 22:51to add, you know, things like that, right?
- 22:53Yeah, personally, you know, so have my business succeed, start
- 22:59doing shows around town and everything professionally,
- 23:04working at work and doing the best I can, you know?
- 23:08OK, those are all goals. Are they specific?
- 23:14Yeah. Are they?
- 23:17Well, when you say specific, what do you mean specific?
- 23:20Like that's why I say those are goals, that they're very clear
- 23:24goals to do better. Or what does that mean?
- 23:27Filing your paperwork every day, Right.
- 23:31Yeah. You know what I mean?
- 23:32Like doing your notes every day before you leave for the day,
- 23:35whatever the case may be, doing your homework before you leave
- 23:37school, all that stuff, Right. And that's sort of what you have
- 23:43to look at. And the more specific the goal,
- 23:48you don't want to be too, too, too specific, but the more
- 23:53specific the goal, the better chances you are at succeeding in
- 23:59completing it. I wanted to be a counselor.
- 24:03What are the steps to get there? Get a degree, the licensing,
- 24:08finding a job, making sure you like it, you know, finding a
- 24:11certain direction or profession in the counseling field, Right.
- 24:16Yeah, those are specific, very specific.
- 24:18I need to get a master's degree, period.
- 24:21That, that, that's not a degree. I need a master's degree, and
- 24:25then I need another 15 or 18 hours into a PhD, right.
- 24:32Those are very specific goals. Saying I need a degree is a goal
- 24:37not specific enough. All right, the next one
- 24:41measurable when you're working on a goal, like for example, if
- 24:47I say I want to be a millionaire by the time I retire, what's my
- 24:51measurement? My bank account, right, All my
- 24:55stocks and bonds, all my properties or whatever I have
- 24:58added together and gets a million, I can say I'm a
- 25:02millionaire now that's that's measurable saying I want to be
- 25:07rich. Again, it's not specific.
- 25:09What's the definition of rich, right?
- 25:11And then how do you measure that?
- 25:13Are you rich when you make 200,000 a year or are you rich
- 25:18when you make 20 million a year? I I'd be happy with 200.
- 25:26I'd be happy with 200, right? Would we be rich?
- 25:31Richer. Yeah, then what we are.
- 25:34Yeah. Would I eventually become rich
- 25:39if I got that money and was able to save it and invest it
- 25:42properly and everything? Yeah, OK.
- 25:44But right now, 200,000 it just better than we are all right
- 25:50now. Achievable.
- 25:53Is it possible? That's what you have to ask
- 25:56yourself, All right, If you put $20 in the bank today, 40 years
- 26:01from now, it could be worth 300. And I don't know, don't comment
- 26:04math on that. If I put $20 today, by the time
- 26:08I retire, I'll have 25, maybe not even that much.
- 26:15You know, it's funny when you first started savings and then
- 26:21your dividend comes back from the bank and it says you made
- 26:23one cent interest. You know, you made $0.05 and you
- 26:27made six, you made ten, you made $1.20.
- 26:29You know, you see that number right?
- 26:33And you see you're getting there, but is it really
- 26:36achievable? OK.
- 26:40And then is it relevant? Meaning when you have a goal, is
- 26:43this something that you're working toward that you want to
- 26:45do? Is there a reason for it?
- 26:47Not just I want to whatever, right?
- 26:50And last but not least, time bound, I want this by this time,
- 26:56whatever you consider that. OK, Now if you say I want to own
- 26:58a house by the time I have my degree finished, you could wait
- 27:04till you're 60 to take that last class you need, right?
- 27:08So you want to have that time bound, You want to put a time
- 27:11frame on it and say by this time.
- 27:12So the example I'd like to use on this is I want to be able to
- 27:18go into space, right? And see the Earth from the from
- 27:23the sky, from the universe, OK. Is that a specific goal?
- 27:32Yeah, yeah. All right.
- 27:34Is it measurable? Yeah.
- 27:38So I'll be up there, right? I'm in, I'm in in space.
- 27:40Hey, right now I'm, I'm, I'm floating in water.
- 27:43I'm floating right then is it achievable?
- 27:49Well. With the training and effort.
- 27:53Training effort. OK, In the old days you had to
- 27:55be an astronaut. Degrees also, yeah.
- 27:57OK. Yeah, you have to.
- 27:59Get a job. Well, well, you have to.
- 28:03There's a lot of steps you have to take to become an astronaut.
- 28:06Now what's the only thing I need to go into space?
- 28:09I don't know. Money.
- 28:13Pay $20 million to go up into space.
- 28:15That's all I need. Did you do it?
- 28:19Hell yeah, If I had several hundreds of millions, maybe in
- 28:23the billions where 20 million doesn't really matter.
- 28:25Not if you had 20 million, would you spend it all on space
- 28:31spacing back or? If it could be up there for
- 28:35longer. Well, how long do you think?
- 28:383 minutes that's I don't know if that's worth it to me.
- 28:43Really. Yeah.
- 28:44Going up there, waiting 3 minutes, they coming down.
- 28:49Yeah, I don't. I don't know if that would be
- 28:50enough for me. Do you think it'll be enough?
- 28:54Yeah, I don't think it would be enough.
- 28:58I want. That anybody else?
- 29:01OK. Can I go up a second time or
- 29:03third time or fifth time if I'm that rich?
- 29:05You got 20 million. If I'm Elon, if I'm Elon or ZEF,
- 29:09I can do that, right? Well, they made a business.
- 29:13You know, but all I need is money is irrelevant.
- 29:20Yeah, I I want to, you know, it's something I would like to
- 29:22do. Have an interest in astronomy
- 29:23and space. All right.
- 29:25As a time bound. Well, I want to do it before I
- 29:30die. Yeah.
- 29:34Is that time bound? Yes.
- 29:37But first I have to get the money and so see how goals build
- 29:42on each other. So is me wanting to go to space
- 29:50a SMART goal? Yeah.
- 29:54Is it? It's possible, right?
- 29:56I could I could win the lottery. I you know, whatever.
- 29:59Right? So there's always that chance.
- 30:06Am I working toward it? No.
- 30:08If I become a billionaire, I think if I ever got to 1
- 30:12billion, I would actually get a flight for us and the girls.
- 30:20Really. Yeah.
- 30:21I would get everybody up there. We'd all die together.
- 30:24OK. No, I, if I get to a billion
- 30:28dollars, I want to, you know, share, share the wealth.
- 30:31And that's something I'd want to do.
- 30:32I would take my friends up, you know?
- 30:35If they want to. If they want to, I'm not going
- 30:37to force them to, you know, but when you, when you think about
- 30:41this stuff, right, think about the goals and how they're,
- 30:47they're what's the word I'm looking for realistic.
- 30:57OK, the SMART goal has realistic in it, but relevant realistic is
- 31:04I'd like to use the word realistic better.
- 31:06OK, and you need to have long term goals yet or you need to
- 31:10have short term goals, then a long, a medium term goal and
- 31:13then a long term goal, a degree short term goals past this
- 31:17class, medium or next shorter one could be past the semester,
- 31:25complete a semester. Next one could be complete 2
- 31:27semesters. So the short term goals, right?
- 31:30Medium term goals are I want to get to be a junior in college.
- 31:34I want to be a senior in college now I want to graduate, right?
- 31:42And then the long term goal 5 to 10 years down the road.
- 31:44What do you want? I want to have a job, work in
- 31:46the field. I got my degree in very
- 31:48specific, very realistic, very measurable, right.
- 31:54Short, medium and long term goals for every goal you have is
- 31:56something we need. Yeah.
- 31:59We need to add is those goals need to have those steps because
- 32:04as as you have them linking, excuse me, as you make those
- 32:11goals and you have the short, medium and long term goals and
- 32:14they're specific and everything you're working toward it.
- 32:17Can you have more than one goal at a time?
- 32:19Yeah. Yeah, you don't have to have
- 32:21that only goal. Writing them down, let you know,
- 32:25hey, these are things we can do. But I'll tell you what, I want
- 32:29to show you a story real quick from Liam and Maria.
- 32:37Look at their perspectives and then we'll talk about it.
- 32:39OK, Connor. OK.
- 32:50Tuning in, not blending in. In today's Story from the Fire,
- 32:562 new hires, Liam and Maria start in the same marketing
- 32:59role. Liam does his job well.
- 33:02Maria also does her job well, but she also creates APDP.
- 33:07She identifies a need for data analysis skills, takes an online
- 33:10course and seeks out projects where she can apply her new
- 33:14knowledge. A year later, when a marketing
- 33:16analyst role opens up, Maria is the obvious choice.
- 33:21That was a story from the fire, Murph.
- 33:23Man, are you feeling the heat? All right, Liam and Maria
- 33:28started the same marketing role. Liam does her job well.
- 33:32Maria does her job well. They're equal, right?
- 33:36But she also creates a professional development plan.
- 33:39She identifies a need for data analysis skills, takes on an
- 33:42online course, and seeks out projects where she can apply her
- 33:44new knowledge. A year later when marketing
- 33:48analysis position comes up, she can jump into it.
- 33:52Now one of my, one of my favorite stories in my life was
- 33:57I was a supervisor of a day treatment program and I had a
- 34:01bachelor's degree and I was working on my master's degree
- 34:04and I started taking on jobs that the director would do OK.
- 34:11And I, I, I, I did things that were not my job, OK?
- 34:22I did things that I was able to, to do.
- 34:27And I just did them. I learned how to do them and I
- 34:31did them. We got a new employee coming in,
- 34:36OK, And I trained him on everything I did, right?
- 34:45And then I got my master's degree one day and they go to my
- 34:49boss. I'm like, all right, I now have
- 34:52one of the only requirement I was missing is my master's
- 34:55degree. OK.
- 34:59And he says, Sean, if you weren't, if I didn't think you
- 35:02were management material yesterday, what makes you think
- 35:06I think you are today? You're just a piece of paper.
- 35:10Damn. Damn right.
- 35:11So I started looking for a job. That's how I got the job at the
- 35:15Renault shelter. And what was funny was my boss
- 35:17Patsy, because I ended up getting the job, she calls him
- 35:21for reference. And what was funny during the,
- 35:23the interview process, I, I didn't put him as a reference.
- 35:27And she's like, how do you not put your boss as a reference?
- 35:30He is just so busy, he never is in the office, you know?
- 35:35And she goes, oh, I, I've known him since school.
- 35:37I'll just call him on his cell phone.
- 35:39Crap. Oh.
- 35:43Anyway, I got the job. I left not 3 weeks later, maybe,
- 35:51maybe I'd like maybe 5 weeks because that'll be at least one
- 35:54month for the report, all the reports to be made.
- 35:58He's like, I need you to come back.
- 36:01I will give you the position. I will give you whatever money
- 36:03you want for the director within reason, of course, right?
- 36:07I need you to come back. And I said last month you didn't
- 36:12think I was management material. What makes you think I'm
- 36:15management material now? And he says I had no idea what
- 36:21you were doing. And he says you left and so many
- 36:28reports fell through the cracks. Wow.
- 36:34And he says what I said, what happened to the guy that we
- 36:37hired? And, you know, I trained him how
- 36:39to do my job. Well, he realized those jobs we
- 36:43were doing were not part of his job description.
- 36:45They were part of the program director's position.
- 36:47He's like, I'm not, I don't have to do them.
- 36:50Oh. And yeah, a couple of months
- 36:56later, the business was out of business is just.
- 36:58Yeah. Oh, wow.
- 36:59And, you know, is it my fault? Maybe.
- 37:04I would I would say. Maybe.
- 37:11But I, I threw it back at him and I said, what makes you think
- 37:14that I'm measuring material a month later because nothing's
- 37:18changed. What changes?
- 37:21He realized everything I was doing for him.
- 37:23Now, did I fail and not tell him what I was doing?
- 37:28Exactly 1 of the things to tell you is tell your boss what
- 37:30you're doing right. Yeah.
- 37:33No, because I was taking on the job myself.
- 37:36Now, if you would have said one day, hey, who's been doing this
- 37:40report for three months? Well, Sean has.
- 37:43OK, See, it would have been nice.
- 37:46I was doing the job already. Then one day nothing changes and
- 37:50I make 30,000 more easy, right? As opposed to learning a new
- 37:57job, being the director, having to worry about everything.
- 37:59I I learned of those skills before I even had the job.
- 38:02OK, so it's funny that he needed me and he, he literally called
- 38:10me and offered me the money and I'm just like, no, dude, like,
- 38:14wow, I'm, I'm really happy where I'm at now.
- 38:17Remember we talked about the job when I was at, I was a counselor
- 38:19working with kids. I never had done that before.
- 38:22So that was interesting to learn.
- 38:24OK, But the, the the irony there is that I learned those skills
- 38:34and I became a great counselor and I actually got known for
- 38:36working with kids. I would have never thought that
- 38:38was going to happen, honestly, you know, but for those of the
- 38:43people who met me in school and everything, they're like, how is
- 38:45he able to do this? And I just learned it.
- 38:52Yeah. Excuse us.
- 38:55All right. So having the goals is
- 39:00important, you know, knowing where you're going is important.
- 39:04Having the professional development plan is important.
- 39:06Knowing the skills you need to have is important.
- 39:11Like Nike says, just do it. Excuse me.
- 39:15OK, sorry, allergies. Just do it.
- 39:18And Speaking of just do it, this is I have ADD I'm not fixed.
- 39:25Excuse me. Bless you.
- 39:32OK, that's three sneezes. That's all that's easy to get.
- 39:35OK, I've. I've had more than three.
- 39:37I know you have, but I'm saying I just do three in a row.
- 39:42I got a Cleeks box. I'm OK.
- 39:46I helped my friend move out yesterday from his.
- 39:49House and all the boxes at dust on them and everything.
- 39:51So yeah. Yeah, the house was dusty.
- 39:53I was like damn. All of us were like, damn.
- 39:57Oh, they didn't realize how dusty it was, you know?
- 40:00Move everything because like they got it from their
- 40:03grandparents. Yeah, it was like passed down to
- 40:05them and they passed away and they didn't like move anything.
- 40:10The front room was like their their grandparents so.
- 40:15Full of dust, super full of dust.
- 40:19Now you, you say that when I think of like I, I haven't
- 40:24dusted in a while, not a long time, but enough to have a
- 40:27little bit of dust on on the table.
- 40:30And this past week, I fell down because I hurt my hip.
- 40:35And I remember reaching down, you know, and then I started
- 40:38telling. I'm sorry, let me excuse myself
- 40:42real quick to wet my face. Well, I was going to tell you
- 40:47the story. Let me just finish this part.
- 40:53I I was all kicking in. I.
- 40:54Was telling my brother, yeah, I fell here.
- 40:56And then I reached down to the table and I and he looks a
- 40:58little right there because he could actually see my handprints
- 41:00in a little bit of dust. I'm like, yeah, yeah.
- 41:03All right, I'll tell you what. Let's take a break.
- 41:06Usually we do it before, after the heat map.
- 41:09Let's do it before and we'll take a quick break and we'll be
- 41:11right back. You guys sounds good.
- 41:13It's time for a break. Hot takes with the Murph man
- 41:16will return. After these messages.
- 41:33Observe, interpret and thrive. The heat map will show you where
- 41:38to focus your efforts for the most impact.
- 41:41Identify your one and three-year career goals.
- 41:44Be specific. Assess your current skills.
- 41:48Ask yourself and your manager, what skills will I need to get
- 41:51to the next level? Set one or two SMART goals for
- 41:55professional development Each quarter.
- 41:58The map is drawn back to Murph Man for the next segment.
- 42:04We are back. We are back and I was supposed
- 42:06to hit a brake. I thought I did and I know what
- 42:09happened. What?
- 42:11During the break I moved the heat map in order and it
- 42:15activated it. So do you need more time or can
- 42:19we go into the heat map? I'm good, all right.
- 42:23If I do sneeze then I'll excuse myself.
- 42:27All right, so the heat map, observe, interpret and thrive.
- 42:32OK, identify your one year, three-year goals and be
- 42:35specific. Short term is a couple months,
- 42:38one year, three-year to five year.
- 42:39If you want to even go longer, 5 to 10 year, OK, depending on
- 42:42what the goal is. If your degree is to get your
- 42:44degree, I mean, if your goal is to get your degree and you get
- 42:47your degree, then then now what? And hold on.
- 42:53Oh. Don't want to lose their life
- 42:56again, yeah. And you're not going to have a
- 43:00goal of five and 10 years for earning a degree.
- 43:04You want to do that within four to five.
- 43:06OK. So sometimes having longer term
- 43:08goals like owning the home for you, owning a Corvette, right?
- 43:13Yeah. And a home and whatever you're
- 43:14going to do with it, right? Access your current skills.
- 43:17Ask yourself and your manager, what skills will I need to get
- 43:22to the next level? Sometimes you're already doing
- 43:26them, they don't know. And set one or two SMART goals
- 43:30for professional development. Your turn.
- 43:37Guy cough you sneezes dude. You say bless me to me I say
- 43:42cough you. Cough you.
- 43:45I don't know what to say for that.
- 43:47You sneeze and you say bless you, but what about a cough?
- 43:53Well do you First off ADD do you know why they say bless you when
- 44:01you sneeze? No.
- 44:04In all times, they used to think that when you sneezed, that was
- 44:08your soul leaving your body. Oh.
- 44:11So they would say bless you and hopefully the soul will go back
- 44:16in anyway for a cough. I don't say anything, you know,
- 44:23it's. A demon trying to come out.
- 44:24It's a demon trying to come, yeah.
- 44:25Christ compels you every time someone.
- 44:30Comes the power of Christ. Just the whole water, the whole
- 44:32thing. Just be like this.
- 44:35You know that'll be funny. Every time they sneeze, it's
- 44:40break. Anyway, going back to the heat
- 44:44map, you guys OK? You need to have those.
- 44:47Those steps, those actionable steps that you can take to reach
- 44:54your goal for professional development, OK, That's that's
- 44:56very important. You need to be able to to sit
- 45:02there and learn and do things, OK.
- 45:06So it's very important, having those SMART goals, having those
- 45:10steps, having everything gives you direction and purpose, not
- 45:16just because, right, It tells you where you're going.
- 45:20And you need to know that. Yeah, you need to know that.
- 45:24All right, so I'll tell you what.
- 45:26We're going to go to break now for real.
- 45:28And when we come back, we'll talk about where those pitfalls
- 45:33are You going to fall, and you could get burned.
- 45:35And the Shields help you protect yourself from that.
- 45:41Stay tuned, we'll be right back. It's time for a break.
- 45:44Hot takes with the Murph man will return.
- 45:46After these messages, the station where our veterans
- 45:56voices are heard. MBR talk.
- 46:00Hey, thanks for supporting our channel by watching and
- 46:02listening find. Us on the web at NB radio dot.

- 49:27not necessarily reflect the views or positions of any

- 49:44loop. We are setting up trivia, bingo
- 49:47and karaoke coming to locations near you.
- 49:50Follow us on all the social media platform at
- 49:53purehottakes.com to stay updated.
- 49:58All right, exciting things coming to El Paso.
- 50:03You know, I started a business called Borderland Success
- 50:06Holdings and under that I have my animation studios, my
- 50:08production studios, everything. I have Borderland Entertainment,
- 50:11which is my trivia and bingo karaoke branch.
- 50:16I have my Murph Land events, which is all my podcasting, my
- 50:19life hosting, emceeing and all that, right?
- 50:22Yeah. It's coming, it's coming.
- 50:25And I'm, I'm getting it together little by little and I'm
- 50:30excited. You know, hopefully we can do
- 50:31some of those trivia and bingo nights soon.
- 50:34You know, I'm working on the website right now.
- 50:36What? Are you working on right now or
- 50:39what? Like on the website?
- 50:41Just making my pages and it's not hard but I'm trying to make
- 50:46it look more professional and that's why I'm having a little
- 50:49bit of issues because I can do a website but.
- 50:51Anybody can, yeah. No, believe it or not.
- 50:54But the templates, yeah, there's templates now where you
- 50:59literally don't need anything. You need to put your
- 51:01information. That's it.
- 51:02But it would have like everything set up already.
- 51:06So right, some people only need would just be the information,
- 51:10That's it. OK, let me, I'm I'm curious, let
- 51:15me see if I can log in here real quick anyways, so I can show
- 51:19everybody the screen, I'll show my screen with them.
- 51:23But if you can log. In.
- 51:25I can I just all right, so anyway, we'll we'll talk about
- 51:29that in a little bit, but yeah, we have a lot of things coming
- 51:32here to El Paso, you guys, you know, and it's all going to be
- 51:35me not lying. It's all going to be me.
- 51:39Let me show you here real quick. That's.
- 51:41True. OK, let me let me let me share
- 51:50my screen real quick so I can show you guys this all.
- 51:54Right. All right.
- 51:58I don't know. What do you tell me what you
- 52:02think about it as you see it? OK, These are the 10 minutes
- 52:08you're talking about, right? No, but yeah, OK, same time
- 52:15because there was one where literally it's a website with
- 52:20the heading, the title and then sections.
- 52:23That's what this is. Well, but smaller.
- 52:25Smaller. That's like the full thing.
- 52:27One of the and that's the thing, you know, I can adjust and go
- 52:32smaller. All right.
- 52:33I meant like. But watch this.
- 52:36With like it's a small box instead of like the whole
- 52:40screen. Mine are the the templates.
- 52:45Templates. OK, then look at this.
- 52:53Each one of those is the page I'm working on because those are
- 52:57all the different things that I have going on with this.
- 53:02So how cool is that? And let me show you my second
- 53:04page real quick. So yeah, I think it's pretty
- 53:15cool. I'm excited and it's just it's
- 53:19not easy to do that. But you know, I'm learning more
- 53:26specifics how to do it and you know I used to do HTML on front
- 53:31page and. HTML.
- 53:34Yes. Oh yeah, sorry, I don't know why
- 53:36I was thinking HDMI. No, HTML is the website language
- 53:41and there were templates and I had to go in and change certain
- 53:46things. And I know how to change like I
- 53:47wanted to go make this red. I had to find the line of code
- 53:49for red. And you know, I can do that now.
- 53:51It does it all for you, you know, So it's a lot easier.
- 53:54But knowing what I want to write in there is why I'm having
- 53:56trouble with it, you know? But getting back to the show,
- 54:02let's talk about those heat Shields that'll help you prevent
- 54:06from falling into those pitfalls.
- 54:17Your values are your anchor, Here are your heat Shields.
- 54:21Your development heat shield is the next level skill gap.
- 54:25The heat here is stagnation, doing the same job year after
- 54:29year. Deploy the shield by
- 54:31continuously evaluating the skills required for the role
- 54:34above you, not just the one you currently hold.
- 54:37Investing time and resources into closing the skill gap
- 54:41Shields your career from obsolescence and ensures you're
- 54:44ready for promotion the moment the opportunity arises.
- 54:48The Shields are up, Murph man, What's next?
- 54:53Well, not what's next, what's before?
- 54:58I, I don't know what happened. I, I deleted the wrong clip when
- 55:01I was when I was moving things around, remember, because we
- 55:02were going to go to break and I didn't.
- 55:04And yeah, I, I don't know what I'm sorry.
- 55:06I got him out of order, it happens.
- 55:09It's at least at least we saw it.
- 55:11Yeah. So we're going to get burned
- 55:14letting your career just happened to you.
- 55:16You know, you're inventing an ownership or have a plan or
- 55:18being the architect. You're not going to get
- 55:20anywhere, right? Create a plan, but never looking
- 55:23at it, obviously, and setting vague goals.
- 55:26Those are all things we've talked about, right?
- 55:28Yeah. So let's let's get to the heat
- 55:33map that we just talked about in King or heat Shields.
- 55:38I'm sorry, heat Shields. All right, so the heat Shields
- 55:46are ways to protect yourself from getting burned.
- 55:48So if getting burned is letting your career just happened to
- 55:53you, be more proactive. Makes sense, right?
- 55:58If the pitfall is never looking at your plan, write it down.
- 56:02Put reminders around. They're called prompts, and
- 56:07setting vague goals use SMART goals.
- 56:10Makes sense, right? Yeah, shouldn't make sense.
- 56:15It should if, if it's like if we can't do it because of this,
- 56:19then do this. It's like A cause and effect for
- 56:23everything. It is cause and effect that it
- 56:26is, you know. So think about that, OK, You
- 56:32have these pitfalls that are very easy to fall into, right?
- 56:35Yeah. And if you don't do anything to
- 56:38change anything, it's not going to go well for you, right?
- 56:45So take, be proactive, take what you need to take in your life to
- 56:52get to where you want to go. Because you don't realize all
- 56:57that, right? Yeah.
- 57:00I, I, I like the fact that when when I have a goal I reach it
- 57:09for the most part, but I do it a little differently.
- 57:13My goals right now are financial.
- 57:15I want to get debt free so I have my budget for the next 7
- 57:22years. 06 years now 232. Wow, assuming I have the same
- 57:28job, same salary, same everything OK, but I have my my
- 57:32bills and I can actually say OK, this bill I'm going to pay.
- 57:35Like for example, I had I bought printer and printer ink that was
- 57:38$1000 and I got it on best buys card and no interest.
- 57:44Hold on. I'm I'm on live on TikTok.
- 57:50I need to verify I'm real and everything.
- 57:54So give me a SEC. This shouldn't be all right and.
- 57:57It's always those captchas, bro. Yeah, they are.
- 58:00They always, they always make something new, right?
- 58:02I swear. My budget like like I said, so I
- 58:07have a a 12 month payment plan to pay off the $1000 printer and
- 58:12ink just no interest right? So I go into my calendar and I
- 58:21put it down, no interest payment, payment, payment.
- 58:24And then let's say I were to buy something that like for example,
- 58:29when I buy my equipment right now, the 15 to $20,000 of
- 58:33everything I'm going to be putting together, I'm going to
- 58:37if I'm making payments on that or if I get a loan, low
- 58:40interest, whatever the case may be, right?
- 58:42That's a five year payment. There I go, right, doing the
- 58:49five year payment plan and I can put it into my budget.
- 58:51So if I want to be debt free by December, I look at my bottom
- 58:56line of December and see if there's any extra money that I
- 58:59haven't accounted for and I put it into a bill in December.
- 59:03That's our January. Anything at the end of the month
- 59:06that's extra, I either can put in savings or pay off bills,
- 59:08whatever the case may be, right? And that's, that's how I measure
- 59:14my goal. OK.
- 59:15Is how many payments am I paying off, Right?
- 59:19And like I told you one time, I paid off so many credit cards or
- 59:21so many debts or so many loans or whatever, right?
- 59:23Yeah. And you're like, that's cool,
- 59:26that's cool. You know, it's one of those
- 59:30things that for me right now, if I follow my plan, by the time I
- 59:37retire at 62, which I'm not going to get all my retired
- 59:41because I don't know if 65 you get more money, 67 to get more
- 59:44money and you know, you'd lose it or you don't.
- 59:48But like I get money ahead of time and I won't have it when I
- 59:52turn 65, you know, because it could be like $800 more 400.
- 59:56I don't know what the difference is.
- 59:57I was going to, I was going to ask you that.
- 59:59Yeah, but you don't break even until you're like 80 years old.
- 1:00:03Like even for what? If I get the money early versus
- 1:00:07waiting for the full amount? Well, what amount I'll.
- 1:00:12Give you an example. Let's say retiring at 62 gives
- 1:00:15you $1000 a month. Retiring at 65 gives you $1500 a
- 1:00:20month. All right, so from 62 to 65 I
- 1:00:24that's $36,000 a thousand a month for three years.
- 1:00:29If I would have waited till I turned 62 I get $500 more a
- 1:00:35month. But to make up to those 36 I
- 1:00:37have to live 72 months, which is 6 years before I even break even
- 1:00:43on the money. Wow.
- 1:00:46OK, I'll at 62, I'll also be fully invested in my TRS money
- 1:00:52for the teacher's retirement, right?
- 1:00:56Yeah. And then my disability, right?
- 1:01:01So by 62 I have 3 incomes. Well, Social Security is
- 1:01:05changing. Let's not even go there.
- 1:01:06They they've mismanaged it to the point where I'm not even get
- 1:01:08that money as much as I would, which really sucks.
- 1:01:10Don't get me started on that. Well, why?
- 1:01:13But how'd you know? Or.
- 1:01:14What the government has borrowed from Social Security for so long
- 1:01:17that they can't even afford to make their monthly payments
- 1:01:19right now. It's going to have to decrease.
- 1:01:23Oh, and people who are in Social Security have fixed incomes,
- 1:01:26right? And now their money's going to
- 1:01:29go down. By how much or what?
- 1:01:31Just like a little amount. Could be $30.00 a month, could
- 1:01:34be fifty, $100 a month. We we don't know how bad it is
- 1:01:38because it's been mismanaged so much by the government.
- 1:01:40And I'm not blaming Trump on this.
- 1:01:42This is something that's been going on 3040 years, OK?
- 1:01:46No one's fixed that. They've always, they never
- 1:01:48balanced the budget. They always took it and borrowed
- 1:01:50money from Social Security. And, you know, some presidents
- 1:01:53are better than others. But yeah, you know, but at 62, I
- 1:01:58can retire, but I have a house payment.
- 1:02:03What? Oh, sorry, Some presidents sleep
- 1:02:06better than others. Yeah, some.
- 1:02:08Some sleep for a while. Like a long time.
- 1:02:10Some presidents are better than others.
- 1:02:13Oh, they say sleep better. That's how I was like sleep
- 1:02:16better. I'm like, oh, because some are
- 1:02:17dead or what? I'm like, yeah, that makes
- 1:02:24sense. I I have no nothing here.
- 1:02:30Let me turn your microphone up. I mean your headphones up.
- 1:02:35Some presents are better than others.
- 1:02:37I. Bet.
- 1:02:37OK, OK. Or were.
- 1:02:39You. You said something before
- 1:02:41better. I don't know why I thought this.
- 1:02:43Presidents are anyway, if I want to get to that amount of money,
- 1:02:50I'm going to have my retirement. I'm going to say I'm going to
- 1:02:53get this much from Social Security, this much from
- 1:02:54disability, this much from teacher retirement, right?
- 1:02:58Yeah, No teacher retirement. I could choose to give to take a
- 1:03:02lower amount every month, but when I die you would get a
- 1:03:08payment for the rest of your life.
- 1:03:13And would my payment be higher if you take lower the money?
- 1:03:16No, if, if I, if I take the higher money amount, you don't
- 1:03:20get anything. So like I told you, if I could
- 1:03:22give you $500 a month, I don't know what the amount is right
- 1:03:25now, right? For the rest of your life, as
- 1:03:29you get older, you know you're going to be making money.
- 1:03:32You might be making $10,000 a month, 500 is nothing.
- 1:03:35But if you put those $500 straight into a savings account
- 1:03:38or something to invest, if you lose it, you're not hurting your
- 1:03:42income, right? And by the time you're 40,
- 1:03:45you're definitely going to be over a millionaire, believe it
- 1:03:49or not, from it's probably when I die, that's me when I die.
- 1:03:54But you could be a millionaire in 20 to 30 years putting $500
- 1:03:58away. Oh wow.
- 1:04:00Yeah, with founded interest in, you know, investing in stocks
- 1:04:03and bonds and everything. But I'm on the, I'm going to be
- 1:04:07on the fixed income at that point, meaning I'm not going to
- 1:04:11get more money. Now I could work, right and make
- 1:04:15money. But if I make 24,000 in work,
- 1:04:20then my payment goes down a dollar for every $2.00 I make.
- 1:04:25So if I make 24,000 and two, my payment goes down $1.00.
- 1:04:31If I make 50,000 it goes down 2500.
- 1:04:35You know what I mean? So my goal is by the time I turn
- 1:04:4062, right, to retire from my job and only have my business
- 1:04:46working. And as I'm sitting here, OK, and
- 1:04:54I'm saying, OK, what do I need to do to reach there?
- 1:04:55What are some of my problems I'm going to have with being this,
- 1:05:03this, what's it called on this fixed income?
- 1:05:09I need to make money right now, OK.
- 1:05:13And you don't realize it so much, OK, Because if you're
- 1:05:19sitting there, I'm sorry if you're seeing there and you you
- 1:05:26don't plan on what your bills are going to be in six years,
- 1:05:32then the fixed income is going to hurt you if you don't have a
- 1:05:35lot, right? Yeah.
- 1:05:39I had investments and everything, but I had to pay.
- 1:05:42I took it all out when your mom died, you know, So I'm starting
- 1:05:46over again basically after she passed.
- 1:05:51But one of the things I want to do is by the age of 62, have my
- 1:05:57house loan paid off. So if I stay here, remove or
- 1:06:02whatever we decide to do right now, this year, right?
- 1:06:05I told you by January I want to do something.
- 1:06:07Yeah. I have from January till the
- 1:06:10time I'm 62 to pay off that house which is 7 years.
- 1:06:13Well, actually, it's, it's 5 now.
- 1:06:17All my income has to go into paying the house off.
- 1:06:21So when I when I get to 62, all I have to pay is my taxes and
- 1:06:24insurance. You know, if at that point I
- 1:06:31need to retire, I need the money.
- 1:06:33You're not going to get anything if I can give it to you.
- 1:06:35Great. Right.
- 1:06:36OK. Yeah, but I have to be not only
- 1:06:39debt free, but all my payments have to go into a house and a
- 1:06:44new car, right? Yeah.
- 1:06:48And that car will be paid off in six to seven years, the same
- 1:06:51time as, you know, retirement. So I can retire with a car that
- 1:06:56is good and I can have a house that's paid off.
- 1:07:02And hopefully I'm not spending money on credit cards and
- 1:07:05everything, right? And then I'm good.
- 1:07:09I'm good, you know. Is that a good goal?
- 1:07:18I mean, it's a good goal, I would say.
- 1:07:21Because every one of my goals personal, professional,
- 1:07:25business, podcasting, everything.
- 1:07:29Yeah. Reaches to that one goal at 62,
- 1:07:32be debt free, have my house paid off, have my car paid off, and
- 1:07:36have enough money to be comfortable when I'm retired.
- 1:07:40Yeah. So can I have the same end goal
- 1:07:45but have several different sub goals?
- 1:07:47We talked about that, right? Short, medium, long term goals
- 1:07:50and then very long, all that many long term goals are going
- 1:07:54to be when I'm 62 and retire. You know, that's what you need
- 1:08:01to do when you're planning this stuff.
- 1:08:02You need to be able to say, hey, what is it that I, I want to get
- 1:08:08to? What am I doing?
- 1:08:10And get there OK, Think about all that.
- 1:08:18When you're young like you are, you get your first job.
- 1:08:22The first thing you need to do is figure out how much you're
- 1:08:26going to put in savings. Yes.
- 1:08:31Because you, you might be living here, you might be living in an
- 1:08:35apartment, whatever, right? But also you get this first job
- 1:08:38that gives you some serious money starting from that moment,
- 1:08:43take out a couple 100 bucks and put into savings every month.
- 1:08:46Don't even touch it like go and get one of those.
- 1:08:50Make your account like like on Chase for example, have your
- 1:08:54money go to savings, create an account and when it says suggest
- 1:08:56password, have let it suggested like Google.
- 1:09:01No hold on, wait, wait, wait, wait and then forget your
- 1:09:03password so you can go into your account.
- 1:09:07Then you have to forget password and it'll let you right, but
- 1:09:14have it in a bank that you can walk into like Chase or Wells
- 1:09:17Fargo or something and you walk in with your ID one day and say
- 1:09:21I need to take money out and you'd never keep an eye on your
- 1:09:26balance. Just make sure it gets there.
- 1:09:29Are they going to tell me to log in?
- 1:09:31No, no, not when you go to the bank, you give your ATM card or
- 1:09:35whatever. Does Navy federal and didn't
- 1:09:37they do that last time because we can't log in?
- 1:09:38No. No, the accounts were not
- 1:09:43attached to what we were trying to do.
- 1:09:44Oh, OK. And anyway, so you do that.
- 1:09:51And then let's say, for example, let's say you don't change your
- 1:09:54address or anything, right? And you get your debit card,
- 1:09:57you, you chop it up so you can't take money out of that account,
- 1:09:59right? In three, five years, you're
- 1:10:02going to get a letter in the mail that's going to have your
- 1:10:04new debit card and you're going to be like, oh, I got this money
- 1:10:08going into this bank account for five years.
- 1:10:10I have no idea how much I have right now, right?
- 1:10:14Yeah, You know, but you want to be able to put money in from the
- 1:10:18day one and never look at it again, $50 a $100, depending on
- 1:10:24how much you're making, right? Yeah.
- 1:10:26And I, like I told you, if you were to get the job like
- 1:10:29cybersecurity and make $100,000 a year, right, this house, if
- 1:10:35you wanted to live here with me, we'd fix it up, add on an
- 1:10:38addition, make it bigger, maybe a second story than one part of
- 1:10:40that, who knows, right? And you would be paying
- 1:10:44everything to the house to pay it off.
- 1:10:47So when we retire, you now have the house to yourself and it's
- 1:10:51paid off. So imagine being, let's see,
- 1:10:56seven years from now, 26, OK, you'll be in a house that's paid
- 1:11:04off, have a car that you might have been able to pay off and
- 1:11:09have nothing to worry about. And like I told you, if I ever
- 1:11:12get sick, just throw my butt in a nursing home.
- 1:11:14I'm, you know, I'm, I'm OK. I've lived my life, right?
- 1:11:18Yeah. But yeah, look at all that stuff
- 1:11:21because it's really interesting when you think about it.
- 1:11:24If you put money in now and you don't even touch it and you keep
- 1:11:30an eye on the bank, obviously, you know, you look at your
- 1:11:31account once in a while, but you, you don't touch it.
- 1:11:34Take out your debit card, right? Forget your password.
- 1:11:38So when you log in, it's there whatever.
- 1:11:41But one day you look at it and you have 50,000 or more, you're
- 1:11:47going to be like what? Where did this money come from?
- 1:11:50Don't touch it. Let it keep going, you know, and
- 1:11:54by time you're 40 millionaire. Easy, easy.
- 1:11:59Wow. You know, 20 years putting in
- 1:12:01the 2 to 300 bucks a month. If you can put more, put more
- 1:12:05until you can't and then lower it, but don't go, you know, too
- 1:12:08low. You always want to keep
- 1:12:09investing. That's that's the most important
- 1:12:11part is keep putting the money in.
- 1:12:14And like my cousin says, if you're trying to make money and
- 1:12:18you want to invest in the stock market, where would you put your
- 1:12:21money? I'm just curious.
- 1:12:23I have no idea Bitcoin. I wouldn't do crypto personally,
- 1:12:30maybe because I'm old school. Right.
- 1:12:32What would you do? Well take his advice and it's
- 1:12:37buy the stocks in what you use. So like what, Amazon?
- 1:12:44Right. Or Walmart, or if you like soda,
- 1:12:49Coke, you know, because that's what you like.
- 1:12:54And why not invest in it? True.
- 1:12:57You know, don't try to be like, oh, you know, there's a new soda
- 1:13:03out on Baja Blast, whatever. Maybe I should invest in
- 1:13:06Mountain Dew because it's the newest thing, you know, OK, you
- 1:13:12know, and that's it, That's it. There's some stocks you can
- 1:13:16invest in where they give you a dividend.
- 1:13:20They'll pay you a certain percentage every three months,
- 1:13:23every six months, every year, whatever they set up.
- 1:13:26So you get income from those stocks.
- 1:13:28OK. Some stocks give you access to
- 1:13:33specials like I think AMC does it, where if you have owned
- 1:13:36stock with AMC, you can go in and get their plan for free or
- 1:13:45something. If you own so many stocks, don't
- 1:13:47forget what how it works, but look into those stocks that give
- 1:13:50you that. You can type in what stocks have
- 1:13:52perks, what stocks have dividends, and you can do that
- 1:13:55too, you know? Yeah.
- 1:13:57And yeah, you can buy, you know, there's a certain rule in your
- 1:14:03investment. So when I say 100%, I'm talking
- 1:14:06about 100% of the investment, not your income.
- 1:14:08OK, 50% goes into stable stuff that's going to be there
- 1:14:14forever. Then 30% goes into medium risk
- 1:14:21stuff, OK, semi new but not really stabilized yet, you know,
- 1:14:27maybe Bitcoin or some crypto. And then 20% you want to put
- 1:14:31into very high risk because that could have a payoff big time or
- 1:14:39not. Like, for example, if I could
- 1:14:40have gotten a Bitcoin for a a cent for every stock and I
- 1:14:45bought 100, I'd have 6,000,000 right now.
- 1:14:48Wow. OK.
- 1:14:50That one, one cent, whatever, right.
- 1:14:54That's what you do with those 20%.
- 1:14:56It's you don't count them. You, you, you invest and you can
- 1:14:59put them in high risk stuff and you go in and before you know
- 1:15:02it. Yeah.
- 1:15:04You know, one of the things a lot of people do, you've heard
- 1:15:07of hedge funds. No hedge funds?
- 1:15:10No. I've heard but I don't know what
- 1:15:12they. Are it's, it's a bunch of
- 1:15:14companies that get together and invest and then this they go buy
- 1:15:18stuff or they invest it and they go to the higher risk stuff.
- 1:15:26Now a lot of hedge funds were buying up properties.
- 1:15:30So that's why one of the reasons this market is so high right now
- 1:15:34is because everyone's buying up all the properties.
- 1:15:36There's all these smaller homes, they're buying them up, they're
- 1:15:39facing up, they're flipping them and they're making money as
- 1:15:41rent, OK. And in the long term, they they
- 1:15:48pay it off or they sell it or whatever, then everyone gets
- 1:15:51their cut from it. But we're talking about owning
- 1:15:55several 100 to several thousand homes.
- 1:15:58Wow. Yeah.
- 1:15:59OK. And the little person has
- 1:16:03trouble buying a house because they can't afford the prices
- 1:16:05because they've inflated them so much, because it's a false
- 1:16:07market. So there's all that involved.
- 1:16:11OK. But yeah, what is your plan?
- 1:16:16If your plan is to invest money, do it.
- 1:16:18And you, you'll be golden by the time you get to be 4045.
- 1:16:23Imagine that. OK, I had you at at 40, No 36.
- 1:16:30Imagine you being five years old and I'm a millionaire.
- 1:16:35Wow. Wow.
- 1:16:36Right. How different would our life
- 1:16:37have been? Right?
- 1:16:39But that could have happened. Could have.
- 1:16:43OK, if I had planned properly. Yeah.
- 1:16:46And imagine having a point where you don't have to work anymore,
- 1:16:51Right? Yeah.
- 1:16:53God, that that. That'd be nice.
- 1:16:55Like my cousin. Almost my whole life.
- 1:16:57Well, yeah, but like, my cousin at like 40 stopped working.
- 1:17:03His wife was a teacher, and she wanted to keep going to school
- 1:17:06because she liked it. She liked teaching.
- 1:17:08She just retired, you know, and now they're going to go travel
- 1:17:13the world and whatever, you know, but get to the point where
- 1:17:17you invest and you plan. Because I'll tell you right now,
- 1:17:21in my opinion, my heart take, in my opinion, investing and
- 1:17:30planning to be debt free and everything by the time you're 40
- 1:17:36will make your life so much easier.
- 1:17:39It'll just make it so much easier.
- 1:17:42Now, I don't know how it all works with what if you're
- 1:17:46married and you get divorced? You know, does it become half of
- 1:17:50hers? And it happens, right?
- 1:17:53So you got to find a way to avoid that if you can, because
- 1:17:57you never know if the marriage is going to last or not.
- 1:18:00Also for the record, if you win the lottery today and get
- 1:18:03divorced tomorrow, she's still entitled to have the lottery.
- 1:18:07After taxes? Like after.
- 1:18:09Yeah, seasons out to half, whatever you get.
- 1:18:11Wow. Is there And then no.
- 1:18:14Because you're married and everything is split down 5050.
- 1:18:18So no matter what if I. Break.
- 1:18:19No, no, no. No matter what you can, you can
- 1:18:21negotiate and say, OK, I'll give you this much money, but I get
- 1:18:24the house and I get the car and I, you know, or vice versa, she
- 1:18:29can say, I'll give you the card and give me more money.
- 1:18:32Yeah, how much even is the lottery?
- 1:18:34Do you know last time you checked?
- 1:18:35I don't know if it it won, but it was a billion dollars for the
- 1:18:37Powerball, which would have been 433 million paid out to you in
- 1:18:43that lump sum. And from that they, you know,
- 1:18:46you pay all the taxes and everything for that year too.
- 1:18:50That's crazy. And then if you get payments,
- 1:18:52you would get about, I think it was 20 million a year for 30
- 1:19:00years, OK. And you think about that 30
- 1:19:05million a year minus taxes. So let's just say you would get
- 1:19:10what's 3 three? I'm trying to think what's a
- 1:19:13good percentage? I think it's 25%, right?
- 1:19:17No, no, I'm saying over your income.
- 1:19:19So if you get 25,000,000 would go to taxes and 15 will be what
- 1:19:24you live on, a million a month, basically.
- 1:19:29You can invest that. And now you have generational
- 1:19:32wealth where you can invest stuff that your children can get
- 1:19:35and they'll be able to use it. And you know what I mean?
- 1:19:38And their kids and their kids, it's called generational wealth.
- 1:19:41If you plan it right, or most lottery winners go broke after
- 1:19:44seven years, Like, like you don't think about this, right?
- 1:19:49Let's say you're 20 years old this year.
- 1:19:53You win the lottery. Yeah, And you buy a $5,000,000
- 1:20:00home, all right, Cash boom, right?
- 1:20:05And then you pay, you buy whatever else you're going to
- 1:20:10buy 30 years from now. You're 50, and you've lived a
- 1:20:16life. You've spent all your money.
- 1:20:18Everything's good, right? But now all that real property
- 1:20:21you own, you have to pay taxes on it.
- 1:20:23Property taxes, insurance. And if you have a $5,000,000
- 1:20:27home, what are you going to get? 100,000 a year.
- 1:20:32Yeah, you got to get a good job for the.
- 1:20:34Well, you're 50, you want to, you haven't worked in 20-30
- 1:20:37years because you've had this $1,000,000 lottery, right?
- 1:20:42Yeah. So even then you got a plan for
- 1:20:46the future. You're not rich forever.
- 1:20:49Yeah, You know, plan it out and do that so when you get to your
- 1:20:54age that you want to retire at, you can do it and not have to
- 1:20:57stress about it. Finances for me is the first
- 1:21:02goal. Now, are there short term goals
- 1:21:05for their? Yeah.
- 1:21:05Get your degree, get a job, you know, whatever the case may be,
- 1:21:08right? But as soon as you get those
- 1:21:11first paychecks, start saving immediately.
- 1:21:14You know, 10% would be great. OK, if you invest those 10% over
- 1:21:22the years, you'll, it'll, it'll grow very quickly.
- 1:21:24I promise you that. If you sit there and you do
- 1:21:28nothing, you're going to get to my age and be like, oh, I got no
- 1:21:31money. What do I do?
- 1:21:34You know, and I'll tell you with my first wife, I bought my first
- 1:21:38house at 23 years old. Like straight up bought my first
- 1:21:41house at 23 years old. OK, Bought my second house at
- 1:21:4428, got divorced. And how to sell them.
- 1:21:50Wow. You know, but right now, those
- 1:21:56houses would have been paid off, you know, It would have been
- 1:21:59making profit on the rent, isn't it?
- 1:22:02If you really think of it that way, Yeah.
- 1:22:05You know, but people get greetings.
- 1:22:06You want to sell the house, and they're like, all right, Nemo,
- 1:22:09Right. Yeah, you, you can.
- 1:22:14You can do it. Like, because I'm telling
- 1:22:16people, you know, I've had a horrible situation after my wife
- 1:22:18passed away, but I was good before that.
- 1:22:22I was good. But yeah, keep that in mind.
- 1:22:31If you make your financial goals your primary goal, you'll do
- 1:22:35much better in the long run. But you need to have other steps
- 1:22:39to get there. OK, makes sense.
- 1:22:42All right. So let's get back to our slides
- 1:22:45in the Afterburn and let's see what are those questions for
- 1:22:49reflection on what we've been talking about today.
- 1:23:01What culture helps you thrive in today's Afterburn?
- 1:23:05Here are some questions for you to reflect on.
- 1:23:07Where do I realistically want to be in my career in three years?
- 1:23:11What are the key skills of people who currently hold that
- 1:23:15role? What is 1 concrete action I can
- 1:23:18take this month to invest in my growth?
- 1:23:21Reflection complete, Murph man. Time for your final thoughts.
- 1:23:26Right. Where do I realistically want to
- 1:23:28be in my career in three years? OK, with everything I got going
- 1:23:34on with my business, My boss like you, you, you're going to
- 1:23:36quit, aren't you? I'm like, no, I'm going to be
- 1:23:38here until I'm 62. I'm too old to be changing jobs
- 1:23:41and learning a new thing and having a new skill gap and all
- 1:23:43that crap. Like you got to learn stuff.
- 1:23:46I know I could. I, I, I I know I'm not stupid.
- 1:23:50I know that. But do I want to That's, that's
- 1:23:55the, that's the point, Connor, Do I want to go through the
- 1:23:58hassle? Right.
- 1:24:01But what? No more question is like do you
- 1:24:05need to do? I need to what?
- 1:24:08Focus on it. Well, yeah, you don't.
- 1:24:11Got to put your time on it. If I get a new job, I have to
- 1:24:13learn a new job. But I'm like, do you need
- 1:24:16another job or do you just want another job?
- 1:24:18No, no, That's the thing. I'm going to stay at my job
- 1:24:22until they retire. I'm not going to change jobs
- 1:24:24because I don't want to deal with the hassle of dealing with
- 1:24:26a new job. All right?
- 1:24:29Does that make sense now? What happens if my business
- 1:24:32shuts down, They go bankrupt or whatever, Guess what?
- 1:24:35I got to get a new job. How how are they going to lose
- 1:24:39their job just. Unplug the computer?
- 1:24:41No, like the company goes bankrupt.
- 1:24:43No. And I think I have no no where
- 1:24:46to connect to I was. Saying because there was like,
- 1:24:48it's an online school. Yeah, I would like just unplug
- 1:24:51it. That's it.
- 1:24:53Oh, school's up. Yeah.
- 1:24:55Something like that. Yeah.
- 1:24:58But yeah. So realistically, what?
- 1:25:01Where do you want to be in three years?
- 1:25:03You. If I ask you, you're going to
- 1:25:05say I don't know, right. Where do you want to be in three
- 1:25:09years? And don't say I don't know.
- 1:25:10Oh, see. In school, still a senior I
- 1:25:17would say. OK.
- 1:25:20Finishing your degree close. Or am I close to it?
- 1:25:22What did my fifth year? Yeah.
- 1:25:26You probably would have one more year to go.
- 1:25:28You'd be a senior. OK, so, but you'd be finishing
- 1:25:30your degrees when I'm getting it.
- 1:25:31Yeah. OK.
- 1:25:33What about this? What are the key skills of
- 1:25:35people who currently hold that role?
- 1:25:38What do people have where you want to be in three years?
- 1:25:41Which is a degree, right? A job.
- 1:25:43A job do you want to do? Teach an assistant job to get
- 1:25:48there and work part time at school and help people in the
- 1:25:51labs and teach classes and everything.
- 1:25:53If I know the material that well, yes.
- 1:25:57You know. But that'll be like in 2
- 1:26:00three-year stops. Right.
- 1:26:02So that's what we're talking about, three years.
- 1:26:04Well, yeah, I'm like, I'm trying to think about them.
- 1:26:07Like will I really want to do TA?
- 1:26:13I don't know. Well, the last question is what
- 1:26:16is 1 concrete action you can take this month to invest in
- 1:26:21your future growth? Learn more about my degree.
- 1:26:28OK. And.
- 1:26:29I was just starting school this month and you got some new
- 1:26:31classes and everything so. Yeah, just do it over and over
- 1:26:34again. Definitely the only thing you
- 1:26:36could do. I do wish you luck with that,
- 1:26:38Connor. Thank you I'll.
- 1:26:40Tell you what, I want to take a quick break and I am taking a
- 1:26:43break, OK, and we will be back after these messages.
- 1:26:49It's time for a break. Hot takes with the Murph man
- 1:26:52will return. After these messages,

- 1:30:19purehottakes.com to stay updated.
- 1:30:21I. Don't know why I said that.
- 1:30:24Yeah, I just realized why it says purehottakes.com.
- 1:30:27Yeah, this is just be at pure hot takes.
- 1:30:31God AI sucks. Why'd they never use it?
- 1:30:35Oh shut up, I use it all the time, it's fine.
- 1:30:41Some. Sometimes I use it a lot when
- 1:30:46I'm sitting at my business. Now not so much.
- 1:30:48Sucks sometimes. It doesn't, but I'll tell you
- 1:30:51what, we'll talk about that right now in our segment called
- 1:30:53Digital Inferno. Yeah.
- 1:30:57It's time for a break. Hot takes with the Murph man
- 1:30:59We'll. I already did this one.
- 1:31:12Slack etiquette is situational. Your PDP lives on platforms like
- 1:31:17LinkedIn and Notion. Use LinkedIn to perform reverse
- 1:31:21engineering. Analyze the skills listed by
- 1:31:24people who have the job you want.
- 1:31:26Next, use this data to populate a digital skill gap tracker in
- 1:31:30Notion. Furthermore, utilize online
- 1:31:33learning platforms, Coursera, Udemy to gain the specific
- 1:31:37targeted skills needed to bridge that gap, often using your
- 1:31:40company's tuition reimbursement system.
- 1:31:45All right, your plan lives on a platform like LinkedIn and
- 1:31:49Ocean. How is that OK?
- 1:31:53They call reverse engineering. See what jobs people have that
- 1:31:57you want. See what they list as their
- 1:31:59skills and then learn those skills right.
- 1:32:05Yeah. Then that that's one way you can
- 1:32:08use technology. OK, now people, I mean, I, I
- 1:32:15know you know when I say a search on Google, right?
- 1:32:19Yeah, you search for Google and it gives you ideas, options,
- 1:32:23right. But Google has AI mode and
- 1:32:26Gemini. No, no, no.
- 1:32:29I'm turning on the search engine.
- 1:32:31If you go to google.com and you type something, use an AI
- 1:32:33option. Yes, that's Google Gemini.
- 1:32:36No, it's not. It's Google AI.
- 1:32:38Which is Gemini that. Gemini is an app is Google.
- 1:32:40Gemini is an app. Separate from that Google search
- 1:32:45is Google AI. It's different than the Gemini
- 1:32:48program. OK.
- 1:32:50Gemini has a lot more features and everything.
- 1:32:52It's sort of like, you know, it's the AI mode on steroids.
- 1:32:57OK OK so like for example, if I type in people use the search
- 1:33:04for I want to go eat tacos today give me some options near me
- 1:33:08that is that OK to use a Google search for that Yeah right.
- 1:33:12That that's what Internet searching used to be I I need to
- 1:33:16find a place that prints business cards and it gives you
- 1:33:20options Now the AI mode same questions give me some places
- 1:33:25that that have or restaurants near me well what kind of food
- 1:33:29would you like Oh well I'm I'm feeling like eating some Mexican
- 1:33:34OK do you want to drive a little further or do you want to stay
- 1:33:37you know it's a lot different using the air mode OK if.
- 1:33:44What's this time around? If you use something different,
- 1:33:48like if you search for I want to buy a computer and then you can
- 1:33:52say, oh, well, I have this computer now with these specs, I
- 1:33:57recommend another one. And it gives you a lot of
- 1:33:59options. And then you can go and say,
- 1:34:01tell me more about this one. Tell me more about that one.
- 1:34:03And it's literally just a conversation as opposed to
- 1:34:06having to do a search every time.
- 1:34:08So the AI mode lets you do that. Now, why do I say that?
- 1:34:11Well, you can ask it. I'm getting a job in computer
- 1:34:17science. What kind of jobs can I get?
- 1:34:24But even before that, what skills do I need to learn to do
- 1:34:28that? And then you have a conversation
- 1:34:32with AI. OK, I know you don't like to do
- 1:34:34any of that, but it's really a way of working out problems for
- 1:34:41me because that AI mode lets me have a conversation that I can
- 1:34:48ask you the questions and expand on it instead of just saying
- 1:34:52where do I want to eat and getting options.
- 1:34:55Yeah, it helps me choose, you know, and I use it for business
- 1:34:59and everything. And then I'll say something
- 1:35:00like, I want to create a business.
- 1:35:02Tell me about the different options I have, but tell me more
- 1:35:05about these. Oh, this sounds like a good
- 1:35:07idea. Now here's my plan.
- 1:35:08What do you think? And it's a conversation, but
- 1:35:11it's answering all your questions same way as Google
- 1:35:14search would do. But it's all in one chat as
- 1:35:17opposed to searching, going to a page, searching, going to a
- 1:35:20page. Yeah, it's all in there now.
- 1:35:22That's the that's the thing about AI.
- 1:35:30Do you know what Seos are? No, it's a search engine
- 1:35:33optimization. And you have to have those Seos,
- 1:35:38correct, If you expect your business to come in.
- 1:35:42And if they search for it and it's not their church, church
- 1:35:45terms are not there. You know what's funny was back
- 1:35:49when my club had rivalry with the other club here in town, I
- 1:35:53did a the SEO to where my page appeared before theirs, even
- 1:36:00though their page had the city name in it.
- 1:36:04Wow. OK, because of the search terms,
- 1:36:07if you know how to, how to use all that, it's really awesome.
- 1:36:11But yeah, so you know, going to LinkedIn and just go into a
- 1:36:15person's page and go, oh, there's the skills they need.
- 1:36:17How much easier is that? Easier, Easier, a lot easier.
- 1:36:21OK, it's funny, I have this one person on LinkedIn that we
- 1:36:27message each other every now and then.
- 1:36:29I don't remember her. You don't, I don't.
- 1:36:33And I don't know if she just added me on LinkedIn or vice
- 1:36:37versa. And, you know, it was like a
- 1:36:39suggestion connection. And we talked and I, I don't
- 1:36:43know, like she actually replied one day, Hey, how's such and
- 1:36:46such person? I'm like, does she know me or
- 1:36:50does she know I worked there and that person works there?
- 1:36:53I don't want to be stupid and go, how do I know you?
- 1:36:56Right? If you're listening, tell me.
- 1:37:01But yeah, LinkedIn is one of those things that you can use it
- 1:37:05for a lot of different options. OK, You can look for businesses.
- 1:37:09You can look for everything and learn those skills you need.
- 1:37:15And then you can add them to your pages.
- 1:37:17If you see someone has a lot of connections, right, The
- 1:37:21algorithm will find connections for you.
- 1:37:23And before you know it, like you as a student, start adding all
- 1:37:27those people. Yeah.
- 1:37:29And they'll say, hey, Connor, you know, I see that you're
- 1:37:32studying cybersecurity. How far along are you?
- 1:37:34Have you taken this class yet? No, whatever.
- 1:37:36Or if you have, you know, I'd be happy to give you a an entry
- 1:37:39level job. You never know how it works,
- 1:37:42right? Because people are always
- 1:37:43looking and then you can figure out what your skill gap is from
- 1:37:48there and also utilize platforms like Coursera and Udemy to gain
- 1:37:53specific targeted skills. Now, let me tell you a little
- 1:37:55bit about Udemy. For the cybersecurity
- 1:38:01certification, the test costs I think 150 or $200.
- 1:38:07Like 150, yeah, for the CompTIA, yeah, yeah, like 15160.
- 1:38:12I got it on Udemy with the course to teach me it for $30.
- 1:38:17Oh wow. One and two.
- 1:38:20One and two. Yeah.
- 1:38:22For 30 bucks. Yeah, God, ish.
- 1:38:26OK. Oh Demi is amazing, you guys
- 1:38:30check it out. I'm going to need to look that
- 1:38:32up right now. You know, it's, it's one of
- 1:38:36those things that there's programs you can use.
- 1:38:40There's ideas out there, right? Yeah.
- 1:38:42And you can definitely see that all those things are there, OK?
- 1:38:50And look up with Demi. Look, watch, go to Demi right
- 1:38:54now, OK? Yeah, let's look this up, guys.
- 1:38:58Now I'm going to I'm going to show Connor something.
- 1:39:00Let me let me see. Can can you share your screen?
- 1:39:05Yeah. Hold on, let Connor share your
- 1:39:07screen real quick. OK, OK, now go back one page. 01
- 1:39:17page would lead me to Google. Yeah, I know.
- 1:39:19OK, OK. Look at the top real quick where
- 1:39:22it says AI. Oh, AI mode.
- 1:39:25Now hold on, you see that right? Yeah.
- 1:39:27You typed it on all and it gave you all the Scroll down just to
- 1:39:30show everybody you typed in Udemy.
- 1:39:31It gives you all that, right? Now go to AI mode.
- 1:39:37OK, and what does it say? Still gives me Udemy.
- 1:39:42It tells me features on the platform, tells me topics that
- 1:39:47it gives and then ask me questions.
- 1:39:53Do you see the difference? Yeah.
- 1:39:55OK, now go back to the all mode and go to Odemi and then look at
- 1:40:04different programs they have. Training courses chat JBTAI
- 1:40:10engineer Claude Yeah, mostly OK Coding and AI.
- 1:40:15Was it's technology? So click on one of those real
- 1:40:17quick. What?
- 1:40:17Or do they have prices on the bottom there?
- 1:40:19Price on bottom? Wow, that's a pretty good
- 1:40:23discount. Yeah, right.
- 1:40:26Yeah, 139, but yeah, you can get it for 25.
- 1:40:29Yes, OK, Udemy sponsor US. Alright, go ahead and stop
- 1:40:37sharing. Wow, that's crazy.
- 1:40:46Yeah, so Udemy is out there and it gives you all the courses you
- 1:40:51could ever want and it's all, it's all there.
- 1:40:55Literally it's all there. That's why I like Udemy a lot.
- 1:40:59They give you the discounts and the programs are really easy to
- 1:41:02to follow. OK, The courses are easy.
- 1:41:06All the work is there and it literally tells you exactly what
- 1:41:08you need for the test and you'll learn it.
- 1:41:13I wonder if it's the same one or it's just like a kind of a
- 1:41:19similar but different way they teach it because I don't know if
- 1:41:25it'll be the same. Same as it would be like school,
- 1:41:28no would do it. Teaching it is different because
- 1:41:31when it's self-paced. Yeah.
- 1:41:34Teaching is different. The test is the same for
- 1:41:36everybody. OK, the test, but the course
- 1:41:38itself is a little different. OK, that's what.
- 1:41:40I thought, and do you? Do you know what standardization
- 1:41:43means? Ever heard of that term?
- 1:41:45Just the normal basic standard type?
- 1:41:49No, that's what I think of it. Standardization means the test
- 1:41:53is standard for across the field.
- 1:41:56So if you tell me I got Comtia certification.
- 1:41:59Oh, which, which one? Comtia, That's that's the,
- 1:42:05that's the test. That's it.
- 1:42:06It was a CompTIA Plus or network or S or set, whatever it is,
- 1:42:11right? Yeah, all of those are
- 1:42:13standardized. So no matter what you take that
- 1:42:15test, you get it. They all stand for the same
- 1:42:18thing. Yeah, right.
- 1:42:19If you get a CompTIA, you would, you know, I would obviously
- 1:42:22think you know every single CompTIA.
- 1:42:24Right. You know, when I took my test
- 1:42:26for certification, I took the health course and I walked in
- 1:42:31and took the test without studying because I'm amazing
- 1:42:35like that. No, basically it's my entire
- 1:42:38life, right? I walked in, I took the test and
- 1:42:41I walked out and the girl says you were supposed to raise your
- 1:42:43hand if you have a question. And I said I'm done.
- 1:42:48And she says, what do you mean you're done?
- 1:42:51It's only been 43 minutes. I said I'm done.
- 1:42:57She says, you know, people take 2-3 hours doing this test.
- 1:43:02I said, yeah, when I did my special Ed test, it took me an
- 1:43:04hour and a half, you know, and you know, when you take a test,
- 1:43:11it tells you your score. I missed 2 questions out of I
- 1:43:14think it was 75, you know, and I'm like, wow, OK.
- 1:43:19I think I did pretty good. So that standardization is the
- 1:43:25same for everybody regardless of what you're testing, the way you
- 1:43:28get there, the path, the journey, the course is, is all
- 1:43:32different. The test is the same for
- 1:43:34everybody. So being self-paced, you go and
- 1:43:38you and you read about it and you learn it.
- 1:43:39You know, I haven't really done that too much because it's, it's
- 1:43:47not easy. And if I have questions, I'd
- 1:43:51like to talk to somebody, right? But like, if you and I were to
- 1:43:54do the course together, right, we could sit here looking at it
- 1:43:58and be like, oh, that's what it means here.
- 1:44:00That's what it means there. And we work on it together,
- 1:44:02right? Watch the course, OK.
- 1:44:05And then we answer questions. Watch the course.
- 1:44:08It's online like videos. I forget this video there's.
- 1:44:12No teacher teacher come into our living room and I can pause it
- 1:44:19and say hey, or I can go to the Internet and say hey, what does
- 1:44:23this mean? Explain it to me in more detail
- 1:44:27and then go back to my test or not my test, my course.
- 1:44:31OK, When you do that, you can learn, but it takes time.
- 1:44:37It's nothing's easy. I'm not saying any of this is
- 1:44:39like overnight, OK? It's not a scam or nothing.
- 1:44:41It's literally here's what I got to do to get this done.
- 1:44:46Yeah, right. So think about that.
- 1:44:50Use with Demi when you have a chance.
- 1:44:52It's, it's really, really cool and cloud code is one of those
- 1:44:56things that people are using more of now.
- 1:44:58And as much as I use AIII don't know, coding and the API keys
- 1:45:06and all that is above my head right now.
- 1:45:08I, I haven't even bothered to getting to that point.
- 1:45:11But the one thing I have learned is how to write a prompt.
- 1:45:14That's true, yeah. You know, I mean, look at the
- 1:45:17whole podcast, yeah. Based on a script, yeah, that
- 1:45:22you made, yeah. You know, that started off with
- 1:45:27I want to start a podcast. What subjects do you recommend?
- 1:45:31Here's the ones I want to do, and then it just started from
- 1:45:35there, you know? A whole year ago.
- 1:45:39Yeah, over a year. Crazy.
- 1:45:42Actually, a year and two weeks ago.
- 1:45:45Two weeks, Yeah. August 4th was the first
- 1:45:47podcast. Oh well, when you started like
- 1:45:50looking it up. Oh, Oh yeah, that was in June.
- 1:45:54Yeah. But yeah, wow.
- 1:45:58And the the first website I came up with was Hot Takes with Me.
- 1:46:05Yeah. And I'm like, no, that's I
- 1:46:07didn't like it, right? But so I went to pure hot takes.
- 1:46:12But either 1 doesn't tell people we're talking about college.
- 1:46:17Yeah. Neither.
- 1:46:18None of those is college. I'm like OK, do I change the
- 1:46:22name of the podcast? I just left this.
- 1:46:24When he said he wanted to do the name for hot takes, I was like,
- 1:46:29OK, we're going to be one of those podcasters that are, you
- 1:46:32know, on TikTok. There we go.
- 1:46:55Hello. Sorry about that.
- 1:46:59It's not the Internet. Our Internet didn't lock off.
- 1:47:01That was weird. It might have been streaming.
- 1:47:03Probably probably like a reset. Would go on.
- 1:47:06But he didn't tell me it was going to be about educational.
- 1:47:10So I was like, oh, I was excited to talk about everything else
- 1:47:13except school when I'm not in school, right?
- 1:47:17Suck for that. Well, let me tell you, January,
- 1:47:22we'll have all the episodes done.
- 1:47:24Yeah. We can do whatever we want.
- 1:47:27We can start over again and do one hour of classes and one hour
- 1:47:30of podcast. Classes.
- 1:47:33Yeah, the educational stuff. Oh, I was like, all right, all
- 1:47:36right, class, here's the board. Well, yeah, that's what we've
- 1:47:41been doing with the slides, no. No, I'm.
- 1:47:43Not saying that's what we're doing with the slides.
- 1:47:45I know, but OK. Yeah, you didn't know I'm using
- 1:47:48this like we just go. Over it though, right?
- 1:47:51But we don't like actually like, right.
- 1:47:52Hi, guys. Yeah.
- 1:47:55We just typed on the Internet, we just shared same thing, I
- 1:48:00guess a smart board. You got the smartest board here.
- 1:48:04All right, so let's let's go ahead and get start wrapping
- 1:48:06this up. Let's get to our final burn for
- 1:48:07today. The final burn for today is
- 1:48:18Slack. Etiquette is situational.
- 1:48:20Your PDP lives on platforms like LinkedIn and Notion.
- 1:48:24Use LinkedIn to perform reverse engineering.
- 1:48:27Analyze the skills listed by people who have the job you
- 1:48:30want. Next, use this data to populate
- 1:48:33a digital skill gap tracker in Notion.
- 1:48:35Furthermore, utilize online learning platforms Coursera,
- 1:48:39Udemy to gain the specific targeted skills needed to bridge
- 1:48:43that gap, often using your company's tuition reimbursement
- 1:48:46system. The Inferno is digital.
- 1:48:49Back to Murph Man to close the segment.
- 1:48:54Tuition assistance, there's companies out there like
- 1:48:57Starbucks from day one you can ask for tuition assistance and
- 1:49:03they'll help you pay for college, you know, utilize the
- 1:49:09programs that are out there. What?
- 1:49:11No, I'm sorry, I got confused. The final burn was the digital
- 1:49:18inferno. Yes.
- 1:49:22OK. It was a little bit of a repeat,
- 1:49:26not an actual full repeat. But yes, OK, that's what I'm
- 1:49:29talking about, the tuition assistance.
- 1:49:32OK, sorry. It's because I looked at him
- 1:49:34like, didn't we just go over this?
- 1:49:36When I was in the Army, we had tuition assistance and you have
- 1:49:41to get approved for it and everything.
- 1:49:42And what's funny is they'll, they'll pay for your tests and
- 1:49:45they'll, they'll pay for everything basically.
- 1:49:47And what's really cool about it is when you sit there and you go
- 1:49:55to college and they pay for it. And you know, a certain
- 1:49:59percentage, right? Your $1000 course is now 200.
- 1:50:07Utilize the tuition assistance. Some kids go to work at
- 1:50:11Starbucks just to get the tuition assistance.
- 1:50:14Because I don't I don't know if there's a certain minimum hours
- 1:50:17or whatever. OK.
- 1:50:20But remember, no matter what you do, just climb the ladder, OK?
- 1:50:28Step by step, climb the ladder. A career plan turns wishful
- 1:50:32thinking into a winning strategy, OK.
- 1:50:36Because yeah, we can all talk about it.
- 1:50:39But we can't show it. But we can't show it.
- 1:50:42So you got to have that career ladder going so that you're able
- 1:50:45to, what's the word, climb the ladder.
- 1:50:51And yeah, a little bit redundant there.
- 1:50:53Time. Show it.
- 1:50:54And then show yourself climbing the ladder, you know?
- 1:50:58What about you, Connor? Do you have any questions today?
- 1:51:02No, not that I could. Think of, OK, well, I think
