- 0:00Speaker 1: As we talk to you kind of women's basketball one
- 0:02Speaker 1: at the Paul last Wednesday beat Butler on Saturday, you
- 0:06Speaker 1: had a chance to visit with your old friend Doug Bruno.
- 0:08Speaker 1: He looked pretty good. Yeah, he did.
- 0:12Speaker 2: You know, we had a great Uh, we had a
- 0:14Speaker 2: great dinner the night before the game, and I you know,
- 0:21Speaker 2: I know he misses it tremendously. And they're playing, they're
- 0:27Speaker 2: playing much better. They're doing doing well relative to when
- 0:32Speaker 2: they first started this season. And you know, I think
- 0:36Speaker 2: the the atmosphere there is great. They had they have
- 0:40Speaker 2: a great arena, and you know, he's just he was
- 0:46Speaker 2: honored with a ceremony at halftime. You know, they had
- 0:50Speaker 2: a big video tribute to him. And it was National
- 0:55Speaker 2: Women's Sports Day.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Yeah, National Girls and Women's Sports in Sports Day.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Yeah, So it was It was really good because I
- 1:03Speaker 2: think he's had a huge impact in the Chicago area
- 1:06Speaker 2: on you know, a lot of girls basketball players, a
- 1:10Speaker 2: lot of a lot of kids grew up in that
- 1:12Speaker 2: area went to his camp.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Where did that friendship start with you and Doug.
- 1:19Speaker 2: I'm trying to think of what what year it was.
- 1:23Speaker 2: I was doing something with USA basketball, but I'm not
- 1:27Speaker 2: exactly sure. What year it was. And I ended up
- 1:32Speaker 2: coaching one of his players in Colorado Springs, and uh,
- 1:38Speaker 2: I threw the kid out. And I mean, I knew
- 1:43Speaker 2: of Doug, but I didn't really know him. And the
- 1:45Speaker 2: kid was like, really talented, but she's a little bit
- 1:49Speaker 2: off to depend and so I sent her home. And
- 1:56Speaker 2: when the camp was over, I had to go recruiting
- 1:59Speaker 2: during the and I walked in the gym and I
- 2:02Speaker 2: just leaned up against the wall and I just closed
- 2:04Speaker 2: my eyes because I knew any minute now who knows
- 2:06Speaker 2: going to walk in And he did, and he walked
- 2:10Speaker 2: right next to me, and he stood there and he
- 2:12Speaker 2: looked at me and he said, I've had to coach
- 2:16Speaker 2: that kid for two years. You couldn't put up with
- 2:20Speaker 2: her for two days. And that's how our friendship started.
- 2:24Speaker 1: That's a heck of way to start. You're a senior guard,
- 2:29Speaker 1: miss Fudd, who's in the best shape of her career
- 2:31Speaker 1: and not having to worry about injury. Her numbers against
- 2:35Speaker 1: top twenty five teams are spectacular. We talked about this
- 2:37Speaker 1: in the pregame on Saturday. When she doesn't worry about
- 2:41Speaker 1: shooting and does everything else well, it just seems like
- 2:44Speaker 1: the offense falls into place, and she is NonStop movement
- 2:48Speaker 1: from start to finish. That's what makes her so tough
- 2:50Speaker 1: to defend because she's constantly moving, which was what you
- 2:54Speaker 1: hope for from a good offensive player.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I mean she you know, she's been obviously
- 3:00Speaker 2: a score from the minute she picked up a basketball.
- 3:07Speaker 2: And I think that like any great scorer, you know,
- 3:12Speaker 2: they they happened they find the ball. And actually there's
- 3:19Speaker 2: a saying in basketball that the ball finds them. You know,
- 3:23Speaker 2: it always ends up in their hands. They're always open.
- 3:27Speaker 2: They just know how to move without the ball, they
- 3:29Speaker 2: know how to get open. They you know, they're really
- 3:34Speaker 2: they're really adept at you know, losing their man, making
- 3:39Speaker 2: their man go one way while they're going another way.
- 3:42Speaker 2: And then you know, they have so many different ways
- 3:44Speaker 2: of scoring. You know, if you look at our our
- 3:48Speaker 2: great scorers, you know you had to guard them a
- 3:50Speaker 2: lot of different ways, and you can't just say, well,
- 3:53Speaker 2: don't let her shoot a three, or don't let her
- 3:56Speaker 2: get to the basket, or you know, take away her
- 3:58Speaker 2: pull up jump shot. So when Asy's got it going,
- 4:04Speaker 2: I mean, this is pretty amazing. It's pretty pretty fun
- 4:07Speaker 2: to watch and certainly the last couple of weeks, right,
- 4:13Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know, the last three or four
- 4:15Speaker 2: games started with Tennessee. Yeah, starting with the Tennessee game,
- 4:18Speaker 2: it's been it's been pretty remarkable, you know, how quickly
- 4:23Speaker 2: you know the points pile up for her.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Yeah. And she's always been a good, positionally defensive player,
- 4:30Speaker 1: but starting with the tournament last year, started to take
- 4:32Speaker 1: more chances and it equated to steals and seems to
- 4:35Speaker 1: be doing more of that, and boy, she's aggressive on
- 4:38Speaker 1: both and she can make an impact. She's I think,
- 4:40Speaker 1: very quietly underrated as a defender. I don't know if
- 4:43Speaker 1: she gets enough credit for what she does defensively, I know,
- 4:45Speaker 1: probably not, probably within program, yeah, but certainly not outside it.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Yeah, probably not. I mean, you know, scorers are known
- 4:53Speaker 2: for scoring, and everybody you know recognizes that about them,
- 4:58Speaker 2: but sometimes those other things get overlooked. And our defense
- 5:06Speaker 2: has been really really good all year, and and our
- 5:10Speaker 2: perimeter guys have been really good at making life miserable
- 5:15Speaker 2: for the other teams, the guards and uh, you know
- 5:19Speaker 2: A's he has gotten better and better every every year
- 5:22Speaker 2: that she's been here, and she adds a little bit
- 5:25Speaker 2: of something every year. And that's what you know, that's
- 5:27Speaker 2: what you want from a player, and especially when they
- 5:30Speaker 2: when they're getting ready to graduate and go to the
- 5:32Speaker 2: next level. If you can't play defense, you're going to
- 5:37Speaker 2: be exposed right away at the next level because all
- 5:41Speaker 2: the players there are pretty talent and they can all score.
- 5:44Speaker 2: You know, we can hide you in college, you know,
- 5:46Speaker 2: we can put you on some bay of players or
- 5:49Speaker 2: put you in some situations where you won't get exposed.
- 5:52Speaker 2: But you know, as you get to be a senior,
- 5:55Speaker 2: you can you you have to be a really good
- 5:57Speaker 2: defensive player if you want to, you know, have an
- 5:59Speaker 2: impact when you go to the pros for sure.
- 6:02Speaker 1: All right, more with you know, we're live at Cafe Ara.
- 6:04Speaker 1: We'll take a break and come back in a minute.
- 6:05Speaker 1: You're listening to the UKON Women's Basketball Coaches Show live
- 6:07Speaker 1: at Cafe Ara on their field.
