- 0:03Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Training Camp Cast.

- 0:12Speaker 2: the news from Patriots training Camp.
- 0:14Speaker 1: I do still watch the news. Practice is over, but
- 0:17Speaker 1: the writers of Patriots dot.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Com have you covered? What did I miss yesterday?
- 0:20Speaker 4: Now here to review today's practice the writers of Patriots
- 0:23Speaker 4: dot Com. All right, welcome into another edition of the
- 0:26Speaker 4: Patriots Training Camp Cast. This, of course the fourteenth practice, guys,
- 0:30Speaker 4: and it was a joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Guys.
- 0:32Speaker 4: I'm gonna start with just the scene setter. A positive
- 0:35Speaker 4: scene setter, great crowd, beautiful day, a lot of good
- 0:39Speaker 4: football being played, a lot of football.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I think that's after keep going.
- 0:44Speaker 4: But let's you know, let's let's get down to the
- 0:46Speaker 4: brass tacks of it all. Big picture for me, defense
- 0:49Speaker 4: pretty good today. Patriots offense had their struggles.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Yeah, and I'll start with the defense because I know
- 0:53Speaker 3: Ev was more focused on on the other side. I
- 0:57Speaker 3: did think the front seven, in particular, I thought did
- 0:59Speaker 3: a good job sort of establishing the line of scrimmage
- 1:01Speaker 3: owning the line of scrimmage. There were some passes completed
- 1:04Speaker 3: for Philadelphia, but it seemed any time that they looked
- 1:07Speaker 3: like they were going to get into a rhythm. They
- 1:08Speaker 3: got some pressure on Jalen Hurts, So I did think
- 1:11Speaker 3: that that front was was pretty stout throughout the day.
- 1:15Speaker 3: The run stop, I thought Godshaw was mid season form.
- 1:19Speaker 3: I didn't think that they had much room to run.
- 1:21Speaker 3: So the front seven, I thought defensive was pretty good.
- 1:25Speaker 3: The second area I don't think was really good. But
- 1:27Speaker 3: you know, we'll get to some bookkeeping stuff. A lot
- 1:30Speaker 3: of guys missing back there, so you know, maybe to
- 1:33Speaker 3: be understand, you know, to be expected.
- 1:34Speaker 4: How about that offense, Evan Uh, yeah, well he said
- 1:38Speaker 4: while talking, Yeah.
- 1:39Speaker 1: They played out there, no here.
- 1:41Speaker 2: I think the biggest thing is to me is that
- 1:44Speaker 2: coming into this practice, you knew that there were some
- 1:46Speaker 2: clear matchups that favored the Eagles defense over the Patriots offense,
- 1:50Speaker 2: mainly looking at their defensive front against the Patriots offensive
- 1:54Speaker 2: line that we know is a work in progress, and
- 1:56Speaker 2: the Eagles got some dudes up there. I mean, we
- 1:58Speaker 2: got to all practice about it. Georgie Davis, Jalen Carter,
- 2:01Speaker 2: Nolan Smith, Bryce Huff coming over from the Jets. They
- 2:05Speaker 2: have one of the best defensive fronts in the NFL,
- 2:07Speaker 2: and that's exactly how it played out in practice, and
- 2:10Speaker 2: then I felt like at times there were some clean
- 2:13Speaker 2: pockets for Jacob ber said, and he wasn't exactly sharp
- 2:16Speaker 2: out there with his ball placement in accuracy. So it
- 2:20Speaker 2: was overall the Eagles definitely controlled the day when the
- 2:22Speaker 2: Patriots were on offense on the other field. But I
- 2:26Speaker 2: don't think it's alarmist necessarily, because what did you expect, Like,
- 2:30Speaker 2: I didn't come into this practice thinking that the Patriots
- 2:32Speaker 2: offense was going to go out there and light it up.
- 2:34Speaker 1: So I wish it was a little bit cleaner.
- 2:37Speaker 2: I'm sure that Paul will get to this a little
- 2:39Speaker 2: bit more than I can, But penalties situational stuff more
- 2:43Speaker 2: than carryover from what we saw yesterday. That's my biggest gripe.
- 2:46Speaker 2: It's one thing to not exactly be able to block
- 2:50Speaker 2: everybody up front when you're still figuring things out on
- 2:53Speaker 2: the offensive line. It's another thing to go offside, you know,
- 2:56Speaker 2: fall start here, fall start there, bad snaps like that
- 3:00Speaker 2: type of stuff has to be cleaned up.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Yeah, that to me would be the biggest disappointment because
- 3:04Speaker 3: I think what Evan said is right. I mean, you're
- 3:06Speaker 3: sort of building an offense from the ground up and
- 3:09Speaker 3: you're playing against a team that from a talent perspective
- 3:12Speaker 3: is super Bowl caliber. Now they have some internal problems
- 3:15Speaker 3: that caused them to lose whatever it was six of
- 3:17Speaker 3: the last seven last year. So the Eagles are fighting
- 3:20Speaker 3: through some stuff. But it's not a talent issue. So
- 3:22Speaker 3: you expected there to be some fits and starts offensively,
- 3:25Speaker 3: but there's no reason to it. I think that we
- 3:28Speaker 3: counted nine offensive penalties. At least six of those were
- 3:32Speaker 3: pre snap ball on the ground, on fumbled snaps, ball
- 3:35Speaker 3: on the ground, you know, on a fake jet sweep.
- 3:37Speaker 3: You know that Brissette has to dive on the ball.
- 3:40Speaker 3: So there was just a lot of things that Austin
- 3:43Speaker 3: Hooper described early in camp as not requiring any talent
- 3:47Speaker 3: that right now this team is having a hard time executing.
- 3:49Speaker 4: You mentioned Austin Hooper probably had to pick one guy
- 3:51Speaker 4: that kind of stood out and certainly was up and down,
- 3:53Speaker 4: you know, got open middle of field, downfield, Jacoby missed him.
- 3:56Speaker 4: I just want to provide a little context though, for
- 3:58Speaker 4: Drake May and his final series of a two minute drill,
- 4:01Speaker 4: and you know, everybody's wondering, Drake May, where's his reps?
- 4:03Speaker 4: And you know, I think he didn't know. I had
- 4:05Speaker 4: an okay practice earlier, but Evan, we got into that
- 4:07Speaker 4: final period and there was a lot of pressure on him.
- 4:10Speaker 4: It's hard to judge him off of what he's dealing
- 4:12Speaker 4: with out there.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Absolutely. He started this practice nine for nine. Now, some
- 4:15Speaker 2: of that was seven on seven, but he made a
- 4:16Speaker 2: really good throw and seven on seven to Jayvon Baker
- 4:19Speaker 2: down the right sideline on a go route. It was
- 4:21Speaker 2: a nice play, and then he carried that over for
- 4:24Speaker 2: the first team period was things were okay and it
- 4:28Speaker 2: really went off the rails from there, And we don't
- 4:31Speaker 2: have the luxury of going back and watching practice film
- 4:34Speaker 2: and all that stuff, so it's always this like difficult
- 4:37Speaker 2: analysis of is it the quarterback.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Is it the line? Is it the receivers? Like who's
- 4:41Speaker 1: that fault?
- 4:42Speaker 2: For the fact that every single hurry up, it feels
- 4:45Speaker 2: like with Drake may is kind of a struggle. I
- 4:48Speaker 2: don't feel like he's been smooth through any of them,
- 4:50Speaker 2: even against his own teammates in practice, so some of
- 4:53Speaker 2: that has to fall on the QB. He said after
- 4:55Speaker 2: practice that he felt like he could have gotten the
- 4:58Speaker 2: ball out a little bit quicker and avoided those sacks.
- 5:01Speaker 2: You know, can't take a sack in a two minute
- 5:03Speaker 2: is what he said exactly. So he's been hard on
- 5:06Speaker 2: himself about it. But to your point, he had four
- 5:09Speaker 2: straight plays in the hurry up where they went four
- 5:11Speaker 2: and out. Three of them were sacks, and from our
- 5:14Speaker 2: vantage point, you guys can have a different opinion if
- 5:17Speaker 2: you do. It didn't feel like they had much of
- 5:19Speaker 2: a chance on the place. Like I'm not talking about
- 5:21Speaker 2: like he's sitting back there for three and a half
- 5:23Speaker 2: four seconds holding the ball, it's hit the top of
- 5:25Speaker 2: the drop and if the ball hadn't been out immediately.
- 5:28Speaker 1: There was pressure in his face.
- 5:29Speaker 2: And the third one or the fourth one, I should say
- 5:32Speaker 2: that was the one throw he got off Kishon booty
- 5:35Speaker 2: was blanketed and.
- 5:35Speaker 1: There was really no place to go with the football.
- 5:37Speaker 1: So it was rough.
- 5:39Speaker 2: If you look at the stat sheet, it's gonna say
- 5:41Speaker 2: zero for four with a four and out. And I'm
- 5:43Speaker 2: not trying to make excuses for him, but the whole
- 5:46Speaker 2: operation was rough, all eleven guys. And I should mention
- 5:50Speaker 2: that he's still working with the twos, so he's working
- 5:52Speaker 2: with the backup offensive line and then a mix of
- 5:55Speaker 2: receivers as well. But mostly just the backup offensive line
- 5:59Speaker 2: and that has problematic for him.
- 6:01Speaker 4: Yeah, just to kind of focus on the defense a
- 6:03Speaker 4: little bit.
- 6:03Speaker 1: To Paul, I thought they were better.
- 6:05Speaker 4: Yeah, and I think, like, you know, look, we saw
- 6:07Speaker 4: what made Jalen Hurts and AJ Brown and DeVante Smith
- 6:09Speaker 4: so difficult. Of course, the team the individual drills, you
- 6:12Speaker 4: don't really get into those, but you know, you see
- 6:14Speaker 4: the connection that they had. There were multiple plays where
- 6:16Speaker 4: you felt like the Patriots were sending blitzes at them.
- 6:18Speaker 4: Jalen Hurts recognized it is able to you know, use
- 6:20Speaker 4: his mobility, get out and you know, throw a dime
- 6:22Speaker 4: to AJ Brown. Happened a couple of times. But it
- 6:24Speaker 4: felt like once the Patriots kind of moved down into
- 6:27Speaker 4: the low red zone you mentioned, the run defense kind
- 6:29Speaker 4: of picked up and it just seemed like their intensity
- 6:31Speaker 4: picked up a little bit and.
- 6:32Speaker 3: They likes the physicality up front on the defensive side,
- 6:35Speaker 3: you know, on the left hand field. Today, I thought
- 6:39Speaker 3: Godshaw looked like he was his normal run stuffing, run
- 6:42Speaker 3: stuff ing sseelf. So that kind of stuff is encouraging,
- 6:45Speaker 3: I think, you know, because they're gonna have to replace
- 6:47Speaker 3: Christian Barmore. You know, you have Matthew Judon as a
- 6:51Speaker 3: pass rusher who knows, you know, how that whole scenario
- 6:54Speaker 3: is going to unfold. So I thought that was encouraging
- 6:57Speaker 3: that they were able to make life a little bit
- 6:59Speaker 3: difficult on the Eagle at times. And I do think
- 7:01Speaker 3: the physicality stood out. Your boy, Julia, I've almost called
- 7:05Speaker 3: him Julius Jabrill Peppers, you know again, I think was
- 7:07Speaker 3: a tone setter in that regard. Lane Johnson credited him
- 7:11Speaker 3: with that for the Eagles. So it wasn't like this
- 7:15Speaker 3: whole just wipeout of a day. I thought they got
- 7:17Speaker 3: a lot of competitive work in but offensively. Evan's right,
- 7:20Speaker 3: they got a long way to go.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Yeah, same kind of issues, just some housekeeping stuff. At first,
- 7:24Speaker 4: we saw Marcus Jones and Jonathan Jones come out in pads.
- 7:26Speaker 4: I didn't see them participate at all, so maybe that
- 7:29Speaker 4: means they're ramping back up. We still think Jonathan Jones
- 7:32Speaker 4: probably could go if it was a regular season, but
- 7:35Speaker 4: otherwise no real returns of note. Hunter Henry did mispractice
- 7:38Speaker 4: as expected, so gave Austin Hooper a little bit of
- 7:40Speaker 4: a chance to do what he did today exactly.
- 7:43Speaker 3: I thought he was the best weapon on offense. And
- 7:46Speaker 3: I know that probably sounds like we're damning with faint praise,
- 7:48Speaker 3: but yeah, Douglas.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Either him or Pop who did get for you a
- 7:52Speaker 2: couple of times in Jacoby Brissett's two minute drill.
- 7:54Speaker 1: But Hooper, some of it was good, some of it
- 7:57Speaker 1: was bad.
- 7:58Speaker 2: You know, he had to drop up and then back
- 8:00Speaker 2: shoulder fade or seem I should say in the end
- 8:03Speaker 2: zone that I thought he caught and then all of
- 8:06Speaker 2: a sudden the Eagles were celebrating and they had the ball.
- 8:08Speaker 2: So it's like, yeah, one of those like tip drill situations.
- 8:12Speaker 2: But he was open. You know, he was getting open
- 8:15Speaker 2: and opened down the field as well. So whether it's
- 8:18Speaker 2: Hooper Henry when he's been healthy, I feel like Hunter
- 8:21Speaker 2: Henry's had opportunities as well. It does seem like this
- 8:24Speaker 2: offense in this system gets the tight end open quite
- 8:27Speaker 2: a bit. You know, David and Jok who had huge
- 8:29Speaker 2: years in this offense in Cleveland, So those opportunities are
- 8:33Speaker 2: going to be there. It's it's really the stuff up
- 8:35Speaker 2: front and then obviously the stuff on the outside that
- 8:38Speaker 2: they're still searching for.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Best player in the field to me though, was was
- 8:41Speaker 3: aj Brown yeah, I thought he was a going concern
- 8:44Speaker 3: any anytime they didn't get pressure on Hurts, it seemed
- 8:47Speaker 3: like it was either either Brown or Smith making I
- 8:50Speaker 3: thought pretty routine catches.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Yea, A trust is clear between Jalen Hurts and A. J.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Brown.
- 8:54Speaker 4: Well, I think this is going to do it for
- 8:56Speaker 4: the Patriots training camp cast. This is the last official
- 8:58Speaker 4: day of open practices. We're not sure that we'll be
- 9:00Speaker 4: other practices, not sure if we're going to get to
- 9:01Speaker 4: watch them all report on them. So for all intents
- 9:04Speaker 4: and purposes, this might be it for the last time
- 9:06Speaker 4: we really see the Patriots play. Behind the scenes. Of course,
- 9:08Speaker 4: big game on Thursday night, we'll be curious to see,
- 9:11Speaker 4: you know, Drake May's reps as you get some chance
- 9:12Speaker 4: with the ones on the offensive line. Give them a
- 9:15Speaker 4: little bit more time plenty to digest here over the
- 9:17Speaker 4: last couple weeks as the Patriots get ready to close
- 9:20Speaker 4: things out against the Eagles and then next weekend against
- 9:22Speaker 4: the Commanders.
