Latest / Traveler’s Tales / The Man Behind 'Holy, Holy, Holy': Reginald Heber's Story
Transcript
- 0:00Before a single word is preached, before a sermon ever reaches the heart, there is something
- 0:17powerful about a song.
- 0:20A song can lift the weary.
- 0:22A song can steady the struggling.
- 0:25A song can turn our eyes away from ourselves and fix them on God.
- 0:32And few songs have done that more faithfully, more powerfully, than the hymn, Holy, Holy,
- 0:38Holy.
- 0:39But behind that hymn is a man, a man whose life was as full of devotion as the words
- 0:45he wrote.
- 0:47You're listening to Traveler's Tales, produced by Enjoying the Journey.
- 0:51I'm your host, Greg Dowdy.
- 0:53As we sing the hymns we love, it's worth remembering the stories behind them.
- 0:59Hymn histories help us see that these songs were born out of real lives, real struggles,
- 1:05real devotion to God.
- 1:07And when we understand that, the words we sing will take on an even deeper meaning and
- 1:13have greater power.
- 1:16Reginald Heber was a man deeply in love with the truth of God's Word, known as the man
- 1:23of letters.
- 1:24He was constantly writing, encouraging others, strengthening believers, and pointing hearts
- 1:29back to Scripture.
- 1:31His pen moved because his heart burned.
- 1:35Born in 1783, he studied at Brasenose College in Oxford, where his gifts in poetry and song
- 1:42quickly distinguished him.
- 1:44But his greatest work would not be found in academic halls.
- 1:47It would be found in faithful ministry.
- 1:51When he became pastor in the small village of Hodnet, he gave himself completely to the
- 1:56work.
- 1:57He loved his people.
- 1:58He walked with them through their sorrows.
- 2:00He labored for their souls.
- 2:03But more than anything, he understood this.
- 2:06The greatest gift he could give them was the truth of God's Word.
- 2:11Each day began with family devotions, followed by hours, seven or eight, spent alone in study.
- 2:19Scripture, history, culture, he dug deep.
- 2:23And from that deep well came words that would nourish others.
- 2:28While serving in Hodnet, Heber took on a remarkable task, writing a hymn or a poem for every Sunday
- 2:35of the year.
- 2:37At a time when the church lacked rich doctrinal songs, he believed God's people needed truth
- 2:43they could sing.
- 2:45And for Trinity Sunday, he wrote what would become one of the most beloved hymns in Christian
- 2:50history, Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty.
- 2:56Those words were not just poetry.
- 2:58They were theology set to music.
- 3:02They lifted the focus off man and fixed it on a thrice holy God, Father, Son, and Holy
- 3:09Spirit.
- 3:11But Heber's passion did not stop with writing.
- 3:15His heart burned for a world that had never heard the gospel.
- 3:20In another one of his hymns, From Greenland's Icy Mountains, you can feel his burden for
- 3:25the lost, and that burden moved him to action.
- 3:30Despite fragile health, he answered the call to serve as bishop in Calcutta, India.
- 3:36For three intense years he poured himself into the work, preaching Christ, training
- 3:42men and laboring in difficult conditions, until his body could go no further.
- 3:49At just 42 years of age, he entered the presence of the very God he had so faithfully exalted.
- 3:56And here is the lasting message of his life.
- 4:00It is not enough to sing about a holy God.
- 4:03We must live in surrender to Him.
- 4:07Heber reminds us that true worship is not confined to a hymn.
- 4:13It flows from life devoted to truth.
- 4:17The songs we sing should reflect the lives we live.
- 4:22So when we lift our voices and sing, Holy, Holy, Holy, let it be more than words.
- 4:28Let it be a declaration, a surrender.
- 4:30Let it be a life yielded to the God who alone is worthy.
- 4:35Because the greatest hymn you will ever offer is not just sung with your lips.
- 4:41It is lived with your life.
- 4:45We're grateful that you've joined us today, and pray that this small piece of history
- 4:49will spark a greater love for the Lord in your own life.
- 4:53Enjoying the journey is a ministry that seeks to preach the gospel, teach the Word of God,
- 4:59and reach this generation for Christ.
