- 0:00And for the final time this season, we're live at bariswel Cow's Barbecue with
- 0:04the Yukon Hockey Coach Show Adam Jardino with me the co host with coach Mike
- 0:08Kavanall. How are you doing tonight? I'm doing great. How are you
- 0:11doing, Bob? I'm doing well. I gotta tell you. Friday night
- 0:14was so much fun at Matthew's. That was a fun hockey game. As
- 0:17you got to split this weekend, it was it was you know, I
- 0:21thought we were pretty opportunistic in that game, and we got some great goaltending
- 0:25and it's a it's always a fun building for us to play in, that's
- 0:29for sure. And other than okay, yes, Northeastern came back, but
- 0:32it was nice to get a lead. Yeah, it was. It's been
- 0:36a while since we've had a lead like that, and you know, I
- 0:40was really, I guess proud of the kids because they came back to tie
- 0:45the game up. But you know, we stayed resilient, as I said,
- 0:49and found a way to get that game winning goal. Yeah, when
- 0:53you have a three to nothing lead on the road and that first goal comes,
- 0:57the second goal comes, did you see any changing demeanor? It sounds
- 1:00like you didn't. It sounded like the guy stayed pretty tough. Yeah,
- 1:03no, I don't think so. Well. You know, when they scored
- 1:06a little bit, we were sitting back in the third, But when they
- 1:10scored then we started playing again and started got some good chances. So,
- 1:14uh, you know, it's been an up and down year. And I
- 1:18think sometimes when you're not scoring goals regularly or as much as you would like,
- 1:26the team sometimes gets you know they're doing they're playing desperate to try to
- 1:32get a win. Yeah, and they're not playing maybe as free as they
- 1:34should be, Mike. The first goal came a minute twenty in by Nick
- 1:38Capone, who had a really good weekend playing. It was just a simple
- 1:42rister through a screen that got past what Colin White had. I'm not sure
- 1:46he ever saw it from the time he did was buy him, but just
- 1:49simple play it to get it on it and he waited for the screen a
- 1:52little bit. Yeah, it's something we work on quite a bit, as
- 1:53shooting through the defenseman, you know. And what made the play too was
- 1:59right and tattle driving the net, which backed the defenseman off a little bit.
- 2:02Then Nick got to the middle and made a good shot so in sense
- 2:06he had not officially forces, but that's as good an assist setting a screen.
- 2:10Yeah he made the play. Yeah he drove the net. You you
- 2:15know, you talk about shooting through a defender, and it's a skill.
- 2:20I don't know if we've talked to you about it this year, but who
- 2:22in this group is particularly good at being able to just get a defender in
- 2:27a spot where you know, you can fire it through their legs. Yeah,
- 2:31you know, Jake Richard is a kid that's pretty good at it.
- 2:35Jake Black isn't bad at it. You know, all our guys. It's
- 2:39something that they work on, but those are probably two kids in particular I
- 2:45think that are really good at it. But it's certainly a learned skill,
- 2:50and I think all great goalscorers have it. Yeah, if you can't get
- 2:53it by the first layer of defense, it's never going to get to the
- 2:55net right exactly. But it's a good scoring chance too, because a goalie
- 2:59is sometime has a hard time picking it up. Mike matthew Wood off the
- 3:01Schneid hat trick first time, had been in a bad drought in Hockey East
- 3:07since November, only two goals since then, but nice give and go with
- 3:09with Tats on the first goal, second goal on a rebound, and then
- 3:13the third goal right after our Senni surge have made another spectacular save and we'll
- 3:17get to our Sinny in a minute, but shut the door onwards Covid and
- 3:20then suddenly transitional two on one and what he finishes he did, and it
- 3:23was It was a great game because we certainly need to get him going for
- 3:27playoffs. There's no question about it. We're a better team when Maddi's going
- 3:30like that. So I was happy to see him break out. And as
- 3:34you said, another big piece of that game was our Cinni and he made
- 3:38some really timely saves when he had to Yeah, the pat the paddles saved
- 3:44that he made on Jack Williams early third period. I mean the net was,
- 3:46like I said on their on the air, the net was open like
- 3:49the size of Texas and I'm not even sure how it stayed out. And
- 3:52then you see the replaying your eyes is bulge. Yeah, yeah, he
- 3:55was. He was really good and not just not just the third period,
- 3:58don't throughout the game. And then towards the end when he had to kill
- 4:00off the penalty with the six on fourth the end. Yeah, he did
- 4:02a good job. We did a pretty good job there too, not allowing
- 4:06them to really get too many Grade a's in that situation. Yeah, because
- 4:13you want some face offs. I mean they dominated the face offs for the
- 4:15good chunk of the game. With the third period you were able to narrow
- 4:18that and then late in the game when you pat hands on head, when
- 4:21you sauch Jake take the penalty. I saw that. Don't make it easy
- 4:26on yourselves, do you. No, it was and it was unfortunate because
- 4:30he was playing hard, but you know, you want to get that puck
- 4:34out, but Fontaine had turned his back, so it's a play where you
- 4:38really can't be as aggressive as he was in that situation. So it's a
- 4:43learning, you know, teaching point, you know, for Jake, and
- 4:48it didn't cost us a game, so you know, hopefully, you know,
- 4:53going down the stretch, if we're in those situations, he'll play it
- 4:56differently for our Sinny we've talked over the last month or so as he's getting
- 5:01those starting reps again after seeding them to Ethan Hyder through the middle part of
- 5:05the year. So the thing that helped him turn the corner was he started
- 5:11staying, you know, within the pipes and being a little bit more not
- 5:14robotic, but mechanical. But then he still has that creative flare. Is
- 5:17that the exact type of play where you're saying, Okay, he's doing what
- 5:20we want, but then he still has the improvisational skills to make those spectacular
- 5:26saves. Yeah, it's not. I think it's mechanical and robotical probably aren't
- 5:31the right adjectives maybe to use. I think it's more he's efficient, you
- 5:38know, is what we're looking for. I always want him to be athletic,
- 5:44but it's within his posts and it's not going out into the bad white
- 5:48ice, you know, just staying within the blue paint for the most of
- 5:53the part, because that's when you get when you get way out into the
- 5:56white ice for shots that you don't need to, that's when you have trouble
- 5:59come back. We mentioned Ryan saddlehat trick of assists in the game on all
- 6:02three matthew Wood goals. I mean, he has really taken off this year.
- 6:06He could probably be one of the candidates for Most Improved Player. Yeah,
- 6:09I would say so for sure. You know, I think he and
- 6:13Jack Pescucci's done a nice job like from where he was a year ago,
- 6:17No question. I think Ryan, you know, would be a candidate for
- 6:21that. It's been fun to watch him and even in practice every day he
- 6:26just brings a lot of energy and just he's a driver of a line,
- 6:31like he really pushes the pace when he's on the line. And when you
- 6:38look at that line, so would have the three goals. So that line
- 6:41accounted for three goals. Is that sustainable every night? Probably not? But
- 6:46what can you take from a three goal night that they can replicate even if
- 6:49they're not getting Matthew at a hat trick every night? But what did they
- 6:51do that you want them to replicate? Well, just to play in the
- 6:56game the right way, like the give and go and on the winning goal,
- 7:00it was Maddie got it and made a play to Ryan and then raced
- 7:04up the ice and got it back. It was another give and go.
- 7:08Essentially. They actually had four goals on the weekend because Samuel got one on
- 7:13Saturday. Yes, So that's a good weekend for them. And if we
- 7:16can have a line like that that's producing for us, it's certainly going to
- 7:19help with Chase coming back as well all right, we'll take our first break
- 7:23later. We've got Tyler Helton, one of your assistants. He's the associate
- 7:26coach, correct he is? All right, let's let's get the title properly
- 7:30done. Longtime assistant associate coach. And then mister four point zero joins us
- 7:33Oliver Flynn. As you're listening to the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show, we're live
- 7:36at Bear Smokehouse Barbecue, the final one of the season here on Learfield.
- 7:41Stay with us.
