- 0:03Speaker 1: Hi, get everybody. I'm Dan Horde and thanks for downloading
- 0:06Speaker 1: the Bengals Booth Podcast. The I said you want to
- 0:10Speaker 1: be stot in something, you got to be stot in something. Addition,
- 0:15Speaker 1: as Dave Lapham joins me to discuss our first day
- 0:18Speaker 1: at Bengals training camp in twenty twenty. Yes, we were
- 0:22Speaker 1: there on Thursday meeting. We got our first look at
- 0:24Speaker 1: Joe Burrow and a Bengals uniform, albeit from a distance.
- 0:29Speaker 1: We'll share our observations about him, a j Green, Billy Price,
- 0:33Speaker 1: and a whole lot more. After that, I'll talk to
- 0:36Speaker 1: one of the most interesting stories on this year's roster,
- 0:40Speaker 1: Winston Rose. He was among the best players in the
- 0:43Speaker 1: Canadian Football League last year and now he's looking to
- 0:46Speaker 1: prove that he can make it in the NFL. The
- 0:49Speaker 1: Bengals Booth Podcast is presented by Prime Sport, the official fan,
- 0:53Speaker 1: travel and hospitality partner of the Cincinnati Bengals. And here's
- 0:57Speaker 1: a quick reminder that you can add the latest edition
- 1:00Speaker 1: of this podcast delivered right to your phone, tablet, or
- 1:03Speaker 1: computer by subscribing on iTunes, Stitch, your Google Play, Spotify,
- 1:08Speaker 1: or pod Bean. It's the greatest thing since cauliflower tacos
- 1:14Speaker 1: with cashew krema. For many families, including mine. If there's
- 1:19Speaker 1: been a silver lining during the pandemic, it's been the
- 1:22Speaker 1: return of the nightly family dinner. We've been together at
- 1:25Speaker 1: the dining room table almost every night and that's been nice.
- 1:29Speaker 1: But after a while the menu can get repetitive. Well,
- 1:34Speaker 1: a friend of my wife recommended a cauliflower taco recipe
- 1:38Speaker 1: from Bonappetite magazine, and it's been a total game changer.
- 1:43Speaker 1: We have them once a week. And here's the thing.
- 1:46Speaker 1: I don't like cauliflower. It's one of my least favorite vegetables,
- 1:51Speaker 1: although not even close to beats the most heinous thing
- 1:55Speaker 1: God ever created. But in this recipe, the cauliflower gets
- 1:59Speaker 1: charred and crispy, and there's a great sauce that goes
- 2:02Speaker 1: in the tacos as well. Everybody in my family loves it,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and everybody we've recommended it to loves it as well.
- 2:10Speaker 1: So go online and search for Bone Appetite cauliflower tacos.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Your taste buds will thank you. Now let's get to football.
- 2:22Speaker 1: I can confidently state that I am COVID free to
- 2:26Speaker 1: give you an indication of how strict the NFL protocols
- 2:29Speaker 1: are a training camp. In order to watch practice this week,
- 2:32Speaker 1: Dave Lappleman I had to test negative for the coronavirus
- 2:35Speaker 1: three times in a five day period. Then on Thursday morning,
- 2:40Speaker 1: we entered the practice field through a separate gait and
- 2:43Speaker 1: watched from a platform behind one of the end zones,
- 2:46Speaker 1: never getting close to a player or coach. Normally we
- 2:50Speaker 1: would be right on the sideline with the freedom to
- 2:52Speaker 1: get right up close to the drills. But I have
- 2:55Speaker 1: no complaints. It was great to be standing next to Lap,
- 2:59Speaker 1: well technically six feet away from Lap, with our masks on,
- 3:03Speaker 1: watching Bengals football Lap. On Thursday, we were able to
- 3:07Speaker 1: attend practice a training camp for the first time, and
- 3:09Speaker 1: that meant we got our first ever look, at least
- 3:12Speaker 1: in a training cap atmosphere at quarterback Joe Burrow. What'd
- 3:16Speaker 1: you think? I was duly impressed in, you know, watching
- 3:19Speaker 1: him throw the football is really a beautiful site. Really
- 3:24Speaker 1: from a football standpoint. He's got a very tight spiral.
- 3:28Speaker 1: He's extremely accurate with the football. His mechanics are very
- 3:32Speaker 1: very tight. When he decides to start a s throwing motion,
- 3:35Speaker 1: to the conclusion of it, that ball is out and
- 3:38Speaker 1: you know, I noticed whenever he's taken drops from center
- 3:41Speaker 1: and taking his three step five step drop, stating and
- 3:44Speaker 1: throwing the football, he's always the first one to have
- 3:45Speaker 1: it out and that those tens of a second are
- 3:48Speaker 1: extremely important. A lot of times it's it's a difference
- 3:51Speaker 1: between you know, having a seventeen yard completion down the
- 3:54Speaker 1: football field and getting hit for a seven yard sack.
- 3:57Speaker 1: I mean there are those. Every tenth is massive, and
- 4:01Speaker 1: he has a very very quick decision making process and
- 4:06Speaker 1: a delivery, and then when he gets it down the
- 4:09Speaker 1: football field, he's not making his receivers work. You know,
- 4:11Speaker 1: they don't have to slow down to catch the football,
- 4:13Speaker 1: they don't have to overextend to catch the football. He's
- 4:16Speaker 1: hitting them in stride. I mean, he's not thrown into
- 4:18Speaker 1: bay windows. He's thrown into portholes. He's thrown into very
- 4:21Speaker 1: very tight windows. Reminds me a lot of Kenny Anderson.
- 4:24Speaker 1: You know, I've mentioned before that I'd worked at camp
- 4:27Speaker 1: with them in Connecticut. It's called the Offense Defense Camp,
- 4:30Speaker 1: and he would just want to work on his throwing,
- 4:33Speaker 1: you know, just get some throws in, keep that arm limber.
- 4:37Speaker 1: And it was unbelievable. I'd be twenty five thirty yards
- 4:40Speaker 1: away from and he'd throw it and he'd say right shoulder, boom,
- 4:44Speaker 1: naval boom, left shoulder, you know, right hip, and hit
- 4:48Speaker 1: those spots even though they're so close together. My hands
- 4:51Speaker 1: would be right there in the ball would be at
- 4:53Speaker 1: that spot. He was. He was unbelievable. And boy, if
- 4:57Speaker 1: Joe Burrow can play as long as Kenny didn't have
- 5:00Speaker 1: the accuracy Kenny did and everything else that Kenny Anderson did,
- 5:03Speaker 1: I think the Bengals would be extremely happy. He reminded
- 5:06Speaker 1: me a lot watching old fourteen slinging a little bit.
- 5:09Speaker 1: That is obviously very high praise, especially considering how close
- 5:14Speaker 1: you are to Ken Anderson. We should clarify he was
- 5:17Speaker 1: not throwing against defenses. He is throwing on air, as
- 5:20Speaker 1: they say, so really all you can determine from watching
- 5:23Speaker 1: that is how does the throw look, how quickly does
- 5:25Speaker 1: he get it out, etc. And just based on how
- 5:29Speaker 1: much he could impress us. He was very impressive. He
- 5:32Speaker 1: was dan And you know the thing that the receivers
- 5:35Speaker 1: used to I hear receivers all the time when they
- 5:38Speaker 1: talk about Kenny Man his ball so catchable. It's like
- 5:43Speaker 1: it's like a mattress. It's so soft, man. It comes
- 5:45Speaker 1: in there and it's not going to dislocate your fingers,
- 5:48Speaker 1: break your fingers. You know, it's he's not gonna you know,
- 5:51Speaker 1: split your the webbing in your finger. I mean, I've
- 5:54Speaker 1: seen guys receivers actually have the webbing in their fingers
- 5:57Speaker 1: split catching fastballs from these guys who are trying to
- 5:59Speaker 1: throw the ball through the wall. You know, and I'm
- 6:02Speaker 1: not saying that, you know, a strong arms not good.
- 6:06Speaker 1: But you know, Kenny's arm was plenty strong enough. I
- 6:08Speaker 1: think Joe's is going to be plenty strong enough. Why
- 6:10Speaker 1: because they put it in such tight spots. I mean,
- 6:13Speaker 1: they know where they're going to football. They're putting into
- 6:15Speaker 1: such a spot the defense has very little time to
- 6:17Speaker 1: react to it, you know. I mean, I think accuracy
- 6:20Speaker 1: makes up for a lot of things, including you know,
- 6:23Speaker 1: maybe a little bit less arm strength. But they have
- 6:26Speaker 1: plenty enough arm strength, and receivers appreciate the fact that
- 6:30Speaker 1: they can pluck the football. They don't have to catch
- 6:32Speaker 1: it and give and be in pain doing it. You know,
- 6:34Speaker 1: It's it's very easy for him. It's just like you know,
- 6:37Speaker 1: picking cotton. They're out there just picking fruit. You know,
- 6:39Speaker 1: it's like it's just pick. They're picking footballs out of
- 6:41Speaker 1: the air. It's very easy. They're just plucking it. So
- 6:44Speaker 1: there are four quarterbacks in training camp, and as we
- 6:47Speaker 1: watch these drills, Joe Burrow would go first, Ryan Finley
- 6:50Speaker 1: sack and Jake Dolagala third, and then the fourth guy
- 6:53Speaker 1: was very interesting to watch Brandon Allen, the quarterback who
- 6:57Speaker 1: started a couple of games for the Denver Broncos last year,
- 7:00Speaker 1: because he is definitely being quarantined, at least in a
- 7:04Speaker 1: sense at practice. Yeah, he is. I don't know. I
- 7:07Speaker 1: guess they're probably keeping him pretty isolated in the building
- 7:09Speaker 1: because he's being as isolated as possible on the football field.
- 7:13Speaker 1: He never got in a huddle, Dan, He never set
- 7:15Speaker 1: the huddle, never called a play in the huddle, never
- 7:17Speaker 1: broke the huddle, never came to the line of scrimmage
- 7:20Speaker 1: with the team and executed a play. The other three
- 7:23Speaker 1: quarterbacks all took turns in rotation of running plays. And
- 7:27Speaker 1: four quarterbacks, that's hard to get a lot of equal snaps.
- 7:30Speaker 1: It's impossible, and you want to get Joe as many
- 7:33Speaker 1: as you can at some point in time. So divving
- 7:36Speaker 1: up four quarterbacks snaps in an hour practice is tough.
- 7:39Speaker 1: So the way they're doing it, and it serves multiple purposes,
- 7:43Speaker 1: is they're quarantining him as such, like you say, keeping
- 7:45Speaker 1: him behind all that action. He's back there with the
- 7:48Speaker 1: coaches and the other players. And then he goes through.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Here's the call. They break the huddle, goes to the
- 7:54Speaker 1: line of scrimmage. He's acting like he's under center, takes
- 7:57Speaker 1: the snap, and then he goes through his progression. He
- 7:59Speaker 1: does his footwork on a running play. I saw him
- 8:01Speaker 1: doing the reverse pivots footwork, all that sort of thing.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Quarterbacks getting out of pocket on bootleg. He's doing that,
- 8:07Speaker 1: and then he's simulating a throw though throwing motion, not
- 8:10Speaker 1: throwing the football. That was some of the time. Other
- 8:13Speaker 1: times he would throw the football, he'd throw the football
- 8:16Speaker 1: to another receiver. He'd see who the quarterback was throwing too.
- 8:20Speaker 1: You know, there's three or four options on every route.
- 8:22Speaker 1: He'd get out of pocket, run behind the quarterback, so
- 8:25Speaker 1: he had the exact same vantage point as the quarterback.
- 8:27Speaker 1: When it was out of pocket, quarterback would hit one,
- 8:30Speaker 1: he'd go to the intermediate with quarterback. When deep, he'd
- 8:32Speaker 1: go short, just the opposite so quarterbacks are getting more work,
- 8:36Speaker 1: receivers are getting more work, they're running their routes, and
- 8:39Speaker 1: it's not just you know, running around and not getting rewarded.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Two guys are catching the football instead of one. More
- 8:44Speaker 1: quarterbacks are. You know, he's getting tons of reps mental
- 8:47Speaker 1: reps because he's doing it with every guy. And then
- 8:49Speaker 1: he stayed after practice to getting more physical work and
- 8:52Speaker 1: throw the ball after practice more. So it was very
- 8:54Speaker 1: interesting to watch how they're doing that kind of thing.
- 8:56Speaker 1: And he's got a pretty good understanding Zack's offense anyway,
- 8:59Speaker 1: having been involved with that concept offensively before. So very interesting.
- 9:05Speaker 1: In order to be able to watch practice on Thursday,
- 9:07Speaker 1: we had to pass three COVID nineteen tests in a
- 9:10Speaker 1: five day period Saturday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. We are also
- 9:14Speaker 1: wearing connection ki n e x O N devices at practice,
- 9:21Speaker 1: and these are little flashing devices. If we get within
- 9:26Speaker 1: six feet of certain employees, they start flashing and beeping.
- 9:29Speaker 1: If we get within ten feet of other employees, they
- 9:33Speaker 1: start flashing and beeping. So obviously the NFL is being
- 9:37Speaker 1: very careful about people potentially passing the virus from one
- 9:42Speaker 1: person to the next. Additionally, at practice, we were behind
- 9:46Speaker 1: one of the end zones on a platform quite a
- 9:50Speaker 1: long distance away from the actions, so some drills you
- 9:53Speaker 1: can see well, others you can't. Fortunately, the wide receivers
- 9:56Speaker 1: got very close to us and we got a great
- 9:59Speaker 1: look at aj Green. We really did Dan and man,
- 10:02Speaker 1: he looks world class to me. I mean, to me,
- 10:06Speaker 1: he could be on an Olympic track and field team
- 10:09Speaker 1: watching that guy. It is. He worked. It's obvious he
- 10:13Speaker 1: works so hard in the offseason. I can remember what
- 10:15Speaker 1: he looked like in Cleveland at the end of last
- 10:17Speaker 1: year running routes down in the field before the game,
- 10:20Speaker 1: like a good iro and a half poor kickoff, and
- 10:23Speaker 1: he looked so smooth and explosive coming out of his routes.
- 10:26Speaker 1: He's even even more so now. I mean, he's worked
- 10:29Speaker 1: so hard and he's in tremendous shape, and man, it's
- 10:34Speaker 1: like he's the if you look look up fluidity in
- 10:39Speaker 1: Webster's his pictures right there. In terms of running routes,
- 10:42Speaker 1: it's unbelievable to watch him effortless. It's really it's it's
- 10:47Speaker 1: it's like watching a professional dancer do his thing. He
- 10:51Speaker 1: gets in and out of cuts so well at his
- 10:53Speaker 1: height to do the things that he does. The separation
- 10:56Speaker 1: and he gets and then catching the football. You know,
- 10:58Speaker 1: they were running routes and like end zone crossers down
- 11:01Speaker 1: in front of us and he just when he catches it,
- 11:05Speaker 1: it doesn't make any noise. It's it's silent. He just
- 11:09Speaker 1: plucks it. It's it's like it it gets absorbed into
- 11:11Speaker 1: an amba or something. I mean, where does that football go?
- 11:15Speaker 1: And and he only he flashes his hands up there
- 11:17Speaker 1: and it's it's out of the air. It's it snatches it.
- 11:20Speaker 1: It's it's just it's amazing to watch him just snag
- 11:22Speaker 1: a football the way he does it, and his skill
- 11:25Speaker 1: set is definitely off the charts. And I'm rooting for
- 11:29Speaker 1: him big time. I know, as every Bengal fan is there,
- 11:32Speaker 1: you know he's he's on a one year deal. He's
- 11:34Speaker 1: on a one year proved deal. Mike Daniels on a
- 11:36Speaker 1: one year proved deal. You know, these guys, they're they're
- 11:39Speaker 1: playing for something. They're playing for their playing for a
- 11:42Speaker 1: continuation of their career. They're planning to provide for their families.
- 11:45Speaker 1: They're planning for personal pride, and nobody has more personal
- 11:49Speaker 1: pride than Adril Jeremiah Green. As you call him. And
- 11:55Speaker 1: AJ is not the only guy who got into tiptop shape.
- 11:58Speaker 1: I mean he's always in tiptop shape. But a couple
- 12:00Speaker 1: of guys who stood out from where we were for
- 12:03Speaker 1: transforming their physiques linebacker Jordan Evans and offensive lineman Billy Price.
- 12:10Speaker 1: There's no doubt. And uh, you know it's it's Billy
- 12:14Speaker 1: Price obviously realized that that coach Turner likes big bodies,
- 12:19Speaker 1: particularly inside. He likes the big body type. So Billy
- 12:22Speaker 1: he looks every bit of three twenty five, three thirty.
- 12:24Speaker 1: He's put on put on some so and it's not sloppy,
- 12:28Speaker 1: it's it's he's stick. I mean, it's it's good weight.
- 12:30Speaker 1: He's blown up, there's no question about it. But you know,
- 12:34Speaker 1: as as a teammate and as a coach, his reaction
- 12:37Speaker 1: is what's your hope for instead of sulking poor me,
- 12:41Speaker 1: feeling sorry for yourself assuming the fetal position. All right,
- 12:46Speaker 1: I can either accept this or I'm going to do
- 12:48Speaker 1: something about it. He did something about it, So he's
- 12:51Speaker 1: he changed himself, changed himself physically. Is that what it's
- 12:53Speaker 1: going to take? I mean, obviously, Billy Price another prideful guy,
- 12:58Speaker 1: and it hasn't gone with injury and other reasons, hasn't
- 13:01Speaker 1: gone the way he's wanted it to to this point
- 13:03Speaker 1: in time. But he's not quitting on it. He's going
- 13:06Speaker 1: to try to do something about it and see if
- 13:07Speaker 1: he can, you know, restart it and reboot and and uh,
- 13:11Speaker 1: you know, the new and improved, the different Billy Price.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Look at Billy Price and Jordan Evans is definitely trimmed.
- 13:17Speaker 1: I mean, Jordan Evans played on the back end in
- 13:19Speaker 1: high school. Jordan Evans played defensive back and just kept
- 13:23Speaker 1: you know, he's got a big frame and just kept
- 13:24Speaker 1: growing and growing. His dad was a great player at
- 13:26Speaker 1: Oklahoma as well, and he knew Jordan was going to
- 13:29Speaker 1: be a bigger guy eventually. And now he's decided that
- 13:32Speaker 1: he was going to trim down a little bit, lose
- 13:34Speaker 1: some of the maybe a little bit of body fat.
- 13:36Speaker 1: But he looks good. He looks good out there running
- 13:38Speaker 1: around at that number fifty fifty Jersey On, you know,
- 13:42Speaker 1: so Jonah Williams, you know, we got to look at
- 13:45Speaker 1: him as well. Jonah's redone himself, So it's good. I mean,
- 13:48Speaker 1: guys have put the work in, and when you put
- 13:51Speaker 1: the work in in the offseason and particularly with the
- 13:53Speaker 1: COVID nineteen. You know, it wasn't easy. Like Mike Daniels
- 13:57Speaker 1: built a gym in his house, tore it down, you know,
- 14:00Speaker 1: moved it from Michigan to Green Bay, rebuilt it. I mean,
- 14:04Speaker 1: guys are are making commitments and fighting through adversity and
- 14:09Speaker 1: all that sort of thing. And it's good to see
- 14:10Speaker 1: you guys doing that and trying to make twenty twenties
- 14:14Speaker 1: as good as season as they possibly can for themselves
- 14:16Speaker 1: in their football team. The Billy Price situation is interesting
- 14:19Speaker 1: to me because when you look at projections of the
- 14:22Speaker 1: Bengals starting offensive line, I haven't seen Billy Price listed.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Trey Hopkins got a contract extension. I think we assume
- 14:30Speaker 1: he's going to be the starting center. They signed Xavier
- 14:34Speaker 1: Sue of Philo to potentially be the starting right guard.
- 14:37Speaker 1: But clearly, in Billy Price's mind, he's not conceding any
- 14:41Speaker 1: of that, whether it's winning the center position back or
- 14:44Speaker 1: beating out Xavier Sue of Philo and others to be
- 14:47Speaker 1: the right guard. Billy Price showed up with the intention
- 14:51Speaker 1: of winning a starting job back, no doubt about it, Dan,
- 14:54Speaker 1: you know, and he and Michael Jordan probably going to
- 14:57Speaker 1: be in a pretty good battle at that left guard spot.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Former Buckey's both of them, Michael Jordan's a much different
- 15:02Speaker 1: body type Mike Jordan. Michael Jordan's got the length and strength.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Billy Price has the strength, not as much the length.
- 15:10Speaker 1: So you know that's that's what he's fighting. I think
- 15:13Speaker 1: as much staying. But you know what, there's nothing wrong
- 15:15Speaker 1: with being number six, particularly if you're the best at
- 15:20Speaker 1: if you're the number one guy at center, in both guards,
- 15:23Speaker 1: the chances of all three guys playing every snap for
- 15:26Speaker 1: sixteen games, you know, in a perfect world, great, it
- 15:29Speaker 1: doesn't always happen. So you don't want to go from
- 15:34Speaker 1: you'd like to go one to one A, not one
- 15:36Speaker 1: to off the depth chart, like what's this guy? You
- 15:39Speaker 1: can coaches like, how are we gonna win with this
- 15:42Speaker 1: guy at the position? So you want to be and
- 15:44Speaker 1: you don't want to let your teammates down if a
- 15:46Speaker 1: starter goes down. You don't want to be a guy
- 15:49Speaker 1: to come run into the huddle all your team is going,
- 15:51Speaker 1: oh jesus, this guy, I mean, we got no shot.
- 15:54Speaker 1: You don't want to be that guy. You want to
- 15:56Speaker 1: you want to be a guy like, hey, I'm as good.
- 15:58Speaker 1: You know. It's it's just it's all us a flip
- 16:00Speaker 1: of the coin. Guys. I can play. I'm not going
- 16:03Speaker 1: to let us down. I can show you I can play.
- 16:05Speaker 1: There's nothing wrong in a perfect You want to have
- 16:07Speaker 1: eight linemen that you can rely on to play and
- 16:11Speaker 1: not have any qualms whatsort of one wine coach. Just
- 16:14Speaker 1: go out there and play right tackle, You're fine. Let's
- 16:17Speaker 1: go out there and play left guard. You're fine. That's
- 16:19Speaker 1: what you want to have. You want to be able
- 16:21Speaker 1: to have and still be able to operate not miss
- 16:23Speaker 1: a beat. So Billy's going to provide that. One thing
- 16:26Speaker 1: I've enjoyed over the years at training camp, and I
- 16:28Speaker 1: know you have too, is the opportunity to walk up
- 16:31Speaker 1: to team president Mike Brown and pick his brain and
- 16:34Speaker 1: listen to his stories. And it's always enjoyable to spend
- 16:37Speaker 1: some time with Mike in this environment. Not sure we're
- 16:40Speaker 1: going to get the chance to do that this training
- 16:42Speaker 1: camp because he positions himself between the practice field so
- 16:45Speaker 1: he can swivel and watch drills in all directions. But
- 16:49Speaker 1: it was interesting to see him in the year twenty
- 16:52Speaker 1: twenty wearing a mask watching a football practice. The number
- 16:57Speaker 1: of decades that he's been involved in football is staggering,
- 17:02Speaker 1: you know, I mean as a player and uh, and
- 17:05Speaker 1: now all the way up to being an owner. It's
- 17:08Speaker 1: got to be from the forties. You know, I'm not
- 17:11Speaker 1: I'm not thinking late thirties. I don't know. I don't.
- 17:13Speaker 1: I don't think he goes back and going back that far,
- 17:16Speaker 1: he's what eighty four, I mean he could be. I mean,
- 17:19Speaker 1: I know he's in training camp in the forties. You know,
- 17:22Speaker 1: so forties, fifties, sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties, twenty tens, twenty,
- 17:28Speaker 1: that's unbelievable. That's a lifetime of football. And he's still
- 17:33Speaker 1: you know, every every training camp it's like Christmas. Every
- 17:37Speaker 1: training camp to him is like, Okay, let's let's unwrap
- 17:40Speaker 1: the presents. Look at oh, we we think we did
- 17:43Speaker 1: a good job. Santa Claus was good to us, and
- 17:46Speaker 1: uh in free agency, in the draft, we think we
- 17:48Speaker 1: have some good press. We have some good items. Okay,
- 17:51Speaker 1: let's unwrap them. Let's see if there's assembly required or
- 17:55Speaker 1: are they a finished product or do we have to
- 17:56Speaker 1: develop them and assemble them a little bit, or do
- 17:59Speaker 1: we have to move him you know too well, what
- 18:00Speaker 1: are we going to do with these things? Are? Are
- 18:03Speaker 1: they just plug and play? Do we have to move
- 18:06Speaker 1: people around? We have to change the way we operate
- 18:09Speaker 1: from a philosophical standpoint or schematic standpoint. And he loves
- 18:13Speaker 1: all that stuff. He loves he loves to see the
- 18:17Speaker 1: beginning stages offseason obviously of putting it all together and
- 18:21Speaker 1: then seeing it start to unfold on the field and
- 18:24Speaker 1: the evolution and development all that. He's a very intelligent man,
- 18:27Speaker 1: as we know, and that that whole dynamic fascinates Mike Brown.
- 18:31Speaker 1: You know, all the trying to meld all the different personalities,
- 18:35Speaker 1: the different quirks, the different everything. I mean, you know,
- 18:37Speaker 1: you're taking you're taking people from all walks of life
- 18:41Speaker 1: in terms of their background when they grew up and
- 18:44Speaker 1: putting them all under one roof and trying to make
- 18:46Speaker 1: a football team out of them. One more topic, and
- 18:49Speaker 1: that's Mike Daniels. On last week's podcast, I brought up
- 18:52Speaker 1: the possibility of signing Demata Peco to add depth on
- 18:57Speaker 1: the defensive line. They had lost Josh Tupo who opted out.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Ryan Glasgow got cut after failing the physical and when
- 19:03Speaker 1: I brought up Domata. You said, well, I wouldn't completely
- 19:06Speaker 1: rule it out, but I don't think he would be
- 19:08Speaker 1: at the top of their list of options. Well, you
- 19:11Speaker 1: were right. They went out and got Mike Daniels, four
- 19:14Speaker 1: years younger, a better player. He's been a pro bowler.
- 19:17Speaker 1: He was on the top one hundred list from his
- 19:19Speaker 1: peers three years in a row, sixteen, seventeen, and eighteen.
- 19:23Speaker 1: To me, that really again represents a change in how
- 19:27Speaker 1: the Bengals are operating. I think in the Marvin Lewis
- 19:30Speaker 1: era particularly, they would have gone out and gotten Domata Peco,
- 19:33Speaker 1: known quality, great guy. They love him, they know him,
- 19:36Speaker 1: he knows the system. It's comfortable, he's comfortable. Instead, they
- 19:40Speaker 1: go out and get the better player, the more expensive player,
- 19:43Speaker 1: the younger player, and in my opinion, the guy that's
- 19:47Speaker 1: going to be able to help them a heck of
- 19:49Speaker 1: a lot more. I agree with all that, Dan, and
- 19:51Speaker 1: I'll guarantee you that Mike Daniels wanted more than two
- 19:54Speaker 1: point seven or two point eight million dollars and he
- 19:56Speaker 1: wanted a longer contract, but they got it done, and
- 20:00Speaker 1: I think he he is the aj green of the defense.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Two Pro Bowls seventeen and eighteen injured nineteen You know
- 20:09Speaker 1: you injured part of eighteen injured nineteen year and a
- 20:12Speaker 1: half he's lost due to injury. Aj Green year and
- 20:15Speaker 1: a half lost due to injury. Pro Bowl high caliber,
- 20:18Speaker 1: Top one hundred player who has missed a year and
- 20:22Speaker 1: a half. A one year show me contract. One on offense,
- 20:26Speaker 1: one on defense. You know one skill player you know
- 20:30Speaker 1: at the receiver position, one of the best in league.
- 20:32Speaker 1: The other one in the trenches. You know a black
- 20:36Speaker 1: and blue guy. You know, it's just gonna you know,
- 20:39Speaker 1: Malia he Dan watching tape of this guy when he
- 20:42Speaker 1: was at his best. He inverts an offensive line penetration disruption.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, man, he was. He's a load. He
- 20:50Speaker 1: and Geno Atkins. You know, he talked about it on
- 20:54Speaker 1: his on his zoom conference called that he and Gino
- 20:57Speaker 1: have kind of texted and fantasized about playing together for
- 21:01Speaker 1: a while. Now Here it is. Here it is, and man,
- 21:05Speaker 1: you throw Daniel in it as well. Gosh, man, I'm
- 21:09Speaker 1: telling you that's name me another defensive tackle. Three man
- 21:14Speaker 1: defensive tackle rotation. There are other good ones in the league,
- 21:17Speaker 1: but man, Bengals got nothing to be embarrassed about. Rolling
- 21:20Speaker 1: those three beasts out there. Okase you missed it. Lapp
- 21:23Speaker 1: and I did a live training camp report with practice
- 21:26Speaker 1: video on Thursday, and we'll be doing two a week
- 21:29Speaker 1: for the rest of training camp. Our next live report
- 21:32Speaker 1: will be on Tuesday afternoon, which will be the first
- 21:35Speaker 1: day that the team is in full pads. Ah yes,
- 21:39Speaker 1: real football. You can watch those reports on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube,
- 21:44Speaker 1: and all of the Bengals platforms. Before we get to
- 21:47Speaker 1: our next conversation, here's a quick reminder that you can
- 21:50Speaker 1: take your Bengals pride to the next level in twenty
- 21:52Speaker 1: twenty with an official Bengals fan package from Prime Sport. Unfortunately,
- 21:58Speaker 1: even though there's been no significant in contacted training camp
- 22:01Speaker 1: so far, the Bengals already have a significant setback as
- 22:05Speaker 1: cornerback Trey Waynes suffered a pectoral injury that reportedly happened
- 22:10Speaker 1: while he was lifting weights. The free agent, who signed
- 22:13Speaker 1: a three year, forty two million dollar deal in the offseason,
- 22:16Speaker 1: could miss a couple of months. One of the players
- 22:20Speaker 1: who will try to fill the void is Winston Rose,
- 22:23Speaker 1: who signed a two year deal with the Bengals in
- 22:25Speaker 1: late December after spending the last three seasons in the
- 22:29Speaker 1: Canadian Football League. Rose led the CFL with nine interceptions
- 22:34Speaker 1: last year and had five the year before. Here's Bengals
- 22:37Speaker 1: head coach Zach Taylor. Fourteen picks is fourteen picks, no
- 22:40Speaker 1: amount of what league you're playing, and that's exciting. And
- 22:43Speaker 1: when we worked him out, he had great twitch, great explosiveness,
- 22:46Speaker 1: had a good knack for the ball in really good hands,
- 22:48Speaker 1: and so now we'll get a chance to see him
- 22:50Speaker 1: really full speed playing the NFL this training camp. Rose
- 22:53Speaker 1: is six feet tall, one hundred eighty pounds and wearing
- 22:56Speaker 1: the number thirty nine at training camp. I spoke to
- 22:59Speaker 1: the twenty six year old defensive back this week Wednesday.
- 23:03Speaker 1: You signed with the Bengals on New Year's Eve after
- 23:05Speaker 1: a tremendous season in the Canadian Football League. What opportunities
- 23:10Speaker 1: did you have in the NFL before ultimately choosing Cincinnati.
- 23:14Speaker 1: I wasn't talked with the Philadelphia Eagles, and I had
- 23:16Speaker 1: to a workout with the San Diego Chargers. So those
- 23:20Speaker 1: those teams and why did you decide to go with Cincinnati.
- 23:24Speaker 1: I just felt comfortable with the coaches and with the
- 23:26Speaker 1: skin and from the workout talking to coach Luke, it
- 23:30Speaker 1: is just in light um after the workouts. You know, Um,
- 23:36Speaker 1: I talked to coach Luke, like I said, it's just
- 23:39Speaker 1: just just going over what Cincinnati did the year before.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Just you know the success they head towards the end
- 23:45Speaker 1: of the season is this. I was just I was
- 23:48Speaker 1: just ready for the rebuild to be part of the rebuilding.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Did it make for a nice New Year's celebration signing
- 23:54Speaker 1: with an NFL team on New Year's Eve? Yeah? Yeah,
- 23:57Speaker 1: it definitely did. To silence person to twenty um in
- 24:03Speaker 1: the NFL. UM it was it was a dream come true.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Man Um, Everything I worked, you know saying worked hard
- 24:09Speaker 1: for and it worked towards. So to sign it just
- 24:13Speaker 1: it was like the chairy on top. We're visiting the Bengals.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Cornerback Winston Rose. You led the CFL with nine interceptions
- 24:20Speaker 1: last year. You had another one in the postseason. Did
- 24:23Speaker 1: you do anything differently or were you used any differently
- 24:27Speaker 1: that helped you get your hands on so many passes
- 24:29Speaker 1: last year? Ultimately, I'll just give credit to my coaches
- 24:33Speaker 1: and my teammates Land. My coaches called the right play
- 24:36Speaker 1: and you know, my teammates just playing playing a party.
- 24:40Speaker 1: As far as like the d line, the front seven,
- 24:42Speaker 1: linebackers and even a safety communicate to me, Um, I'll
- 24:47Speaker 1: give on the success to them. Um. I feel like
- 24:50Speaker 1: the rush play a key party with the dbs and coverages.
- 24:53Speaker 1: So if you get impressure, the quarterback is going to
- 24:57Speaker 1: throw it up because you know what I'm saying. You
- 24:59Speaker 1: know you don't to take a sex so he might
- 25:01Speaker 1: just give that fifty fifty block to one of his
- 25:03Speaker 1: receives that he feels comfortable with. So just having that
- 25:07Speaker 1: pressure with my d line and linebackers, uh, clearing on
- 25:10Speaker 1: the quarterback to make my job easier. Wedinston. For people
- 25:14Speaker 1: who have never watched the CFL game, it's different. You've
- 25:18Speaker 1: got twelve players on each side, the field is bigger,
- 25:21Speaker 1: the wide receivers can get a running start before the
- 25:24Speaker 1: ball is snapped. How is playing quarterback different in the
- 25:28Speaker 1: CFLs from the NFL, I, like always tell people, is
- 25:32Speaker 1: really the intensive to details, the techniques, techniques and just
- 25:37Speaker 1: a little the little things that I will show up
- 25:40Speaker 1: on game day. Um, I definite lot of people. Uh no, no,
- 25:45Speaker 1: m you have to give every receiver a yard off
- 25:48Speaker 1: the ball room. So you know how like we pressed,
- 25:52Speaker 1: you could be all in a receiver face in the
- 25:54Speaker 1: NFL and the candidate thing in ANCFL, No, you gotta
- 25:57Speaker 1: get you got to get to play a yard off.
- 25:59Speaker 1: And then on top of that, at M I feel
- 26:01Speaker 1: like the offense being advantage because the receivers have that
- 26:05Speaker 1: head start. So say you're saying, you're a player that's
- 26:08Speaker 1: on the line and you're pressing and you got a
- 26:10Speaker 1: player that's coming at you full speed running start, that
- 26:13Speaker 1: get kind of like, you know, scary at some point.
- 26:17Speaker 1: But once she once she just learned the techniques and
- 26:20Speaker 1: you know, the detail in the game, everything, everything just
- 26:24Speaker 1: slowed down for you. Do you think that style of
- 26:27Speaker 1: play made you better? Does it help a cornerback in
- 26:30Speaker 1: particular to have to deal with all of those difficult
- 26:33Speaker 1: challenges in the CFL? I definitely, I definitely can say
- 26:37Speaker 1: being in the CFL definitely was what I needed. Um,
- 26:42Speaker 1: what I'm saying is it definitely like makes you keen
- 26:46Speaker 1: to your technique, keen to the little petition to details
- 26:49Speaker 1: and really just um playing the call with them, playing
- 26:53Speaker 1: the call within the system. You don't want to get
- 26:55Speaker 1: your own thing. And then next you know, you give
- 26:57Speaker 1: a pro touchdown And in the CFL that's that's a
- 27:01Speaker 1: momentum switcher. But that's a that's that's a sports and
- 27:04Speaker 1: you know it's a momentum switcher. So you definitely, um,
- 27:08Speaker 1: don't want to be on the spotlight, but at the
- 27:10Speaker 1: same time, you feel like you feel like if you don't,
- 27:13Speaker 1: you know, can't block in and pay attention, and you're
- 27:19Speaker 1: definitely gonna be on the spotlights. We're visiting with Winston Rose.
- 27:23Speaker 1: You've been in NFL training camps before, with the Rams
- 27:26Speaker 1: and the Colts. What stands out from your previous experiences
- 27:30Speaker 1: and does it feel different this time? I feel like
- 27:34Speaker 1: the difference from my first UM training camp is I
- 27:38Speaker 1: was a rookie, I was specially out of college and
- 27:41Speaker 1: I didn't I didn't have no experience under my belt,
- 27:43Speaker 1: and being through I would say like for a training
- 27:47Speaker 1: camp so far, Um, they definitely give me that experience
- 27:51Speaker 1: to you know, not every night, not every day it's
- 27:54Speaker 1: perfect and you can't make every play perfect, but what
- 27:56Speaker 1: you can do is control what you can control, just
- 28:00Speaker 1: give up and to give maximum efforts. So UM, that's
- 28:04Speaker 1: that's that's That's where I'm just um going into the
- 28:07Speaker 1: training camp is I know, I know it's not a sprint.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Its a marathon. So I can't just think I'm gonna
- 28:13Speaker 1: get everything. I'm gonna know everything all in one day
- 28:16Speaker 1: to take time, and you definitely got to wrap it
- 28:18Speaker 1: out too. So I'm controlling what I can control and
- 28:21Speaker 1: doing my part. And as far as like whatever the
- 28:24Speaker 1: coaches want me to do, I wanted to do it.
- 28:26Speaker 1: So do what the bankers were Winston. When you signed
- 28:30Speaker 1: in December, you were at Paul Brown Stadium and you
- 28:34Speaker 1: expected to be back in April for OTAs. Where did
- 28:37Speaker 1: you wind up spending the off season and what did
- 28:40Speaker 1: you do to prepare in a pandemic situation? UM? I was.
- 28:45Speaker 1: I was back at home in Los Angeles, Phenerma City area.
- 28:49Speaker 1: UM and what I did was, I just went back
- 28:51Speaker 1: to the basic. UM. As far as like training or
- 28:55Speaker 1: like conditioning, I was training with my high school coach
- 28:58Speaker 1: from Saint Jenner in high school much high school track
- 29:02Speaker 1: coach doing doing cardio work with him. And also UM
- 29:07Speaker 1: as far as lifting, I would I would lift. I
- 29:11Speaker 1: have one of my one of my cousin's friends, garage Jim.
- 29:15Speaker 1: He had like you know, squire, rag bench and pretty
- 29:18Speaker 1: much everything I needed to to sustain my strength. So
- 29:22Speaker 1: um yeah, I just I just made sure that that
- 29:26Speaker 1: every day I may count I didn't take one, I
- 29:29Speaker 1: take a day off. Um and just and just and
- 29:32Speaker 1: just kept that rhythm. Um I would well, actually I
- 29:35Speaker 1: would actually wake up early in the morning, like start
- 29:37Speaker 1: my day in like around five thirty and that specific time,
- 29:40Speaker 1: so just I can train myself to get ready for
- 29:43Speaker 1: when I come over to Ohio that I know it's
- 29:46Speaker 1: three hours different. So then when it's time to wake
- 29:49Speaker 1: up any morny, I won't be too drag because I'm
- 29:51Speaker 1: already used to waken up early and California. So it
- 29:55Speaker 1: was just it was just little things like that that
- 29:57Speaker 1: I kept in my program. Good thinking of the body clock.
- 30:01Speaker 1: And it sounds like that was kind of old school
- 30:04Speaker 1: going to a friend's house who had weights in his garage,
- 30:08Speaker 1: right right, right, yeah, yeah, exactly what I said, right
- 30:11Speaker 1: back to the basics, like you don't need you know,
- 30:14Speaker 1: that big gym to get working. You can still get
- 30:17Speaker 1: working with some gunbills, a squad, wreck, a bar and
- 30:21Speaker 1: you know, there's little things like that. We're visiting with
- 30:24Speaker 1: Winston Rose. Unfortunately, the first serious injury of training camp
- 30:29Speaker 1: was to somebody in your position group. Trey Waynes. It
- 30:31Speaker 1: looks like he's likely to be out for a couple
- 30:33Speaker 1: of months. I know you feel badly for him, but
- 30:37Speaker 1: do you look at it like a starting job is
- 30:40Speaker 1: now up for grabs. To be honest, I have no
- 30:42Speaker 1: idea what's going on, so I can't speak on that.
- 30:46Speaker 1: All our numbers that I'm trying to get better, to
- 30:49Speaker 1: do whatever it takes to help the team win and
- 30:52Speaker 1: con sure what I can control. Let's talk a little
- 30:55Speaker 1: bit about last year you won the Gray Cup, Canada's
- 30:58Speaker 1: super Bowl with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Described that experience
- 31:03Speaker 1: being professional to win the championships like everything you put
- 31:07Speaker 1: put the work in with your teammates, even off season,
- 31:10Speaker 1: that you put in to ultimately reach that goal. So um,
- 31:15Speaker 1: it was. It was definitely a movie with Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Our season was it started off hot five and five
- 31:24Speaker 1: and then we went through our adversity upper down. But
- 31:26Speaker 1: I feel like those diversities that we went through it
- 31:29Speaker 1: in the season prepared us for playoffs and compared to
- 31:33Speaker 1: be the champions because we knew, we knew how to
- 31:37Speaker 1: come back from behind, we knew how to you know,
- 31:40Speaker 1: university strikes in the game, not to quit. Um to
- 31:44Speaker 1: lean on, lean on to our brothers and play for
- 31:47Speaker 1: each other. So ultimately, yeah, Winnipeg, Winnipeg Seaton last year
- 31:52Speaker 1: was a movie. And I'm blessed. I'm grateful, grateful for
- 31:56Speaker 1: the Winnipeg organization to bring me in after one year. Year. Um, um,
- 32:03Speaker 1: blessed to have to be part of that group. To
- 32:07Speaker 1: you know what, I think it was twenty six years
- 32:09Speaker 1: or twenty nine years since the last championship championship went
- 32:13Speaker 1: through that city. So to be part of that that's historical,
- 32:17Speaker 1: um and multiple. Ultimately, Man, for the fans of Winnipeg,
- 32:21Speaker 1: I feel like they deserted to as well. Um, the city,
- 32:26Speaker 1: the city itself is uh, it's it's it's birth taking
- 32:30Speaker 1: in because it's it's like the fans and the people
- 32:34Speaker 1: they just so genuine. That's and that's just in general
- 32:37Speaker 1: in Canada that I had got being over there, that
- 32:40Speaker 1: the people in Canada is so genuine and so sincere.
- 32:44Speaker 1: So um, yeah, man, it was. It was. It was
- 32:47Speaker 1: a movie, man, a movie that definitely that definitely get
- 32:51Speaker 1: an Oscar. You must have been very popular in Winnipeg
- 32:57Speaker 1: to be there for a year, to lead the fl
- 33:00Speaker 1: and interceptions and be part of a team that won
- 33:02Speaker 1: the Great Cup. You must be quite a celebra in Winnipeg.
- 33:07Speaker 1: I wouldn't say. I wouldn't say a celebrity, But I'm
- 33:11Speaker 1: just Winston man. I'm just Western road man from Los Angeles,
- 33:15Speaker 1: just doing my part, uh, you know, keeping God first
- 33:18Speaker 1: and everything I do and just just being mean. And
- 33:21Speaker 1: I feel like, ultimately, um, that's what Winnipeg. Uh, let
- 33:26Speaker 1: me let me do then let me be myself. They didn't. Um,
- 33:30Speaker 1: you know, like I said, I played it. I played
- 33:32Speaker 1: a game within a system, but ultimately it was just
- 33:35Speaker 1: just go out there and do what you do and
- 33:38Speaker 1: the rest was The rest was history. And I feel
- 33:41Speaker 1: like every every every player to say that, Um, and
- 33:45Speaker 1: we ultimately, we ultimately did it. Man. We ultimately reached
- 33:47Speaker 1: that goal that couldn't we couldn't be reached for a
- 33:50Speaker 1: long time. So so to be part of that, it's
- 33:53Speaker 1: it's it's a further grateful forever grateful. I'm thankful as
- 33:56Speaker 1: well too, Winston. Just to wrap things up, describe how
- 34:00Speaker 1: you're feeling now that you're here. You're in the early
- 34:02Speaker 1: stages of training camp, trying to be a part of
- 34:06Speaker 1: this franchise. Going forward. I'm just grateful and grateful every
- 34:09Speaker 1: day to get this opportunity to go out there and
- 34:13Speaker 1: you know, just putting down in the football flum. So
- 34:16Speaker 1: I'm just taking each day one day at a time,
- 34:18Speaker 1: um and lemonade mistakes, keen in details, you know, practicing
- 34:23Speaker 1: like a champion and just coming in and trying trying
- 34:27Speaker 1: to do my part. Just whatever the caause, like I said,
- 34:30Speaker 1: whatever the coaches need me to do, I wanted to do. So.
- 34:33Speaker 1: I just want to bring that energy to the team
- 34:35Speaker 1: and just show the other coaches and show everybody that
- 34:39Speaker 1: I'm a team player. I'm just here to you know, serve.
- 34:42Speaker 1: We're excited to see you do your thing. Have a
- 34:44Speaker 1: great camp, stay safe, and I appreciate the time. Thanks Winston, Hello,
- 34:49Speaker 1: thank you. Either way, the quarterback of that Great Cup
- 34:54Speaker 1: championship team in Winnipeg last year was former University of
