- 0:00Psalm 20 from the book of Psalms.
- 0:03Dear Lord, please be with us and open our minds and our hearts to
- 0:06you. As we read through this, we ask
- 0:09this in Jesus name, Amen, for the director of Music, a Psalm
- 0:14of David. As I've mentioned in past
- 0:17podcast, I've been looking at through blueletterbible.org to
- 0:22see the original Hebrew words in the translation and just to
- 0:28review this wherever it says Lord and where it says God and
- 0:33what is what the original Hebrew word is.
- 0:37So in this Psalm, I'll just give an overview overview.
- 0:41Every time it says may the Lord, it's actually the name of God
- 0:45and the name of God was given to us.
- 0:47I believe in Exodus 3 where the name of God is YHWH.
- 0:54And we've talked about this in the past two.
- 0:58I don't know that we have the correct pronunciation, but if
- 1:01you sound out those letters, it almost sounds like a breath and
- 1:05that appears to be the name of God.
- 1:08And so this is wherever it says Lord, the actual name of God is
- 1:14being used. And then where it says God, it's
- 1:17actually the plural reference to God, Elohim, ELOHIM.
- 1:23And there's different versions. Sometimes there's L, sometimes
- 1:26there's Elohim, sometimes there's Elohim.
- 1:30And so there's variations. And I think this helps us to
- 1:33understand. So Elohim appears to be
- 1:38acknowledgement of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
- 1:40And we know that all Scripture is inspired by the Holy Spirit.
- 1:44So therefore the words that were written down in Hebrew were
- 1:48inspired by God and revealing. And I think that's why it's so
- 1:52important for us to look at the original Hebrew words.
- 1:55And thankfully we have that available through
- 1:57blueletterbible.org. So now as I read through this, I
- 2:01will just read what it says, but just know that Lord and God have
- 2:05the name of God and then also the plurality of the like one in
- 2:11spirit, Elohim. So I will read through it as it
- 2:15is written. Now may the Lord answer you when
- 2:19you are in distress. May the name of the God of Jacob
- 2:23protect you. May He send you help from the
- 2:27sanctuary and grant you support from Zion.
- 2:31May He remember all your sacrifices and accept your burnt
- 2:35offerings. May He give you the desire of
- 2:38your heart and make all your plans succeed.
- 2:41May we shout for joy over your victory and lift up our banners
- 2:46in the name of our Lord. May the Lord grant all your
- 2:51request. Now this I know.
- 2:53The Lord gives victory to his anointed.
- 2:57He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary with the victorious
- 3:02power of his right hand. Some trust in Chariots and some
- 3:07in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
- 3:13They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and
- 3:17stand firm. Lord, give victory to the King.
- 3:21Answer us when we call. And that ends Psalm 20.
- 3:26So I'll read what the study Bible says on about this chapter
- 3:30because there's not a lot that I have to add.
- 3:32So how does God's name offer protection?
- 3:35God's name is not a magical charm, but it represents His
- 3:39authority and all that He is. His name is synonymous with His
- 3:45power and it protects us. What is this sanctuary?
- 3:50A holy place suggesting? 1 The tent in Jerusalem that
- 3:54housed the ark. This the symbol of God's
- 3:58presence or two Zion, the holy mountain where the temple was
- 4:02later built. Does God, Does God?
- 4:06Does knowing God guarantee success?
- 4:10So I'm going to read a couple of articles that are in the Study
- 4:14Bible and let me turn to those and let's see, it says I just
- 4:24need to get to the pages and then I will start reading them.
- 4:30All right. Does seeking God guarantee
- 4:34success? Yes and no.
- 4:38Faithfulness and seeking God does not guarantee that God will
- 4:42grant us success if we define success as acquiring wealth,
- 4:48prestige, and power. That is not to say, however,
- 4:52that God doesn't sometimes bless us with those gifts, as it is
- 4:56clear from King Uzziah's case it was This is written in them.
- 5:01If you want to go to like Second Chronicles chapter 26, that's
- 5:06where this is referencing. And what what God does guarantee
- 5:13is that when we seek him, we will enjoy the success of
- 5:17finding the source of love and peace and the reason for hope.
- 5:22That's referencing Jeremiah 29, verses 11 through 13.
- 5:26Whether or not God blesses us with the kind of success that
- 5:30society cherishes, the Chronicler makes it clear that
- 5:34we must focus not on seeking success, but on seeking God.
- 5:42So God, you know in other parts of Scripture it says first seek
- 5:48God and his righteousness and all will provided.
- 5:51I'm paraphrasing that. But God takes care of our needs
- 5:55and I think sometimes our request may be selfish.
- 6:00They may be fleshly as opposed to spiritually significant in
- 6:06the what God values. And so sometimes when we ask for
- 6:11those kinds of things, they don't really align with God's
- 6:13will. And so God may not give those
- 6:17things. But in other times where what we
- 6:21ask for is within God's will, I believe that God does respond
- 6:27and he does answer our prayers. Sometimes we don't understand
- 6:33when we think something is God's will, but it may not be because
- 6:37God knows things that we don't know.
- 6:40And that's when we need to trust God in that whatever he does is
- 6:44the best for us because God takes all bad things and turns
- 6:48them to good for those who love him.
- 6:53And, and so that it, that is a truth that's found in Scripture.
- 6:56So our biggest, our greatest, I guess our greatest focus should
- 7:03be on God and seeking his righteousness.
- 7:08And it says that, you know, when we do that, then all of these
- 7:11other things will be given to us and that we shouldn't worry
- 7:14about anything because God will take care of us because he takes
- 7:17care of us out of his love for us.
- 7:21So let's see the pay. I need to go back to another
- 7:26section and I'll read that question and answer to that the
- 7:30study Bible refers to. So it says this.
- 7:35The question is, is success guaranteed to those who obey
- 7:40God? In a general sense, yes, but the
- 7:45promise was made to the nation as a whole, not to individuals.
- 7:49Personal fortunes or misfortunes could vary widely from the
- 7:54overall prosperity of the nation.
- 7:57The blessings and curses in Deuteronomy 28 are part of God's
- 8:02covenant with Israel. If Israel obeyed God, he would
- 8:07bless them with success and prosperity.
- 8:10If they disobeyed Him, God would punish them.
- 8:14Such blessings and curses were common entreaties between
- 8:18nations and peoples in ancient times.
- 8:21The promised prosperity was not primarily intended for
- 8:25individual comfort and material gain.
- 8:28It was intended to witness to the surrounding nations that
- 8:32Israel served the one true God. God would make Israel powerful,
- 8:38a leader among the nations. The head, not the tail, at the
- 8:42top, never at the bottom. In addition, prosperity was to
- 8:46be shared among the less fortunate of the community so
- 8:50that all might have their needs met.
- 8:53We see in Deuteronomy 28 a basic principle, not an absolute law.
- 8:59Typically, when we follow God's ways, we will experience more
- 9:03success than when we go our own way.
- 9:06Still, suffering may come to those who are righteous.
- 9:10Matthew 5, verses 10 through 12. In fact, sometimes suffering
- 9:15comes because of godly living. Living Second Timothy chapter 3,
- 9:21verse 12. God has promised to eternally
- 9:24bless those who obey Him. Matthew 25 verse 34 And when
- 9:30God's people see the wicked prosper, they can remember two
- 9:34things. Number one, God's patience and
- 9:38grace permit many to enjoy things they do not deserve.
- 9:43Matthew 545 and #2 God's justice will one day be accomplished.
- 9:49Matthew 25, verses 31 through 46.
- 9:55And then I'm going to go back to our chapter where we were.
- 10:00And I think the other question is who is His anointed?
- 10:05Anointed. When the Israelites read this
- 10:08verse, they likely thought of their king.
- 10:10Interestingly, the word Messiah comes from the Hebrew word for
- 10:16His anointed. So the early followers of Jesus
- 10:20recognized these words as a foreshadowing of the Son of God.
- 10:27So why refer to God's right hand?
- 10:29This was a figurative way to speak of God's great strength,
- 10:33and you can find that in Exodus 15, verse 6.
- 10:36What does it mean to trust in God's name?
- 10:39Trusting in God's name means placing one one's confidence in
- 10:44who he is. And then were they praying for
- 10:47the King's salvation? This was salvation in a
- 10:50physical, not spiritual sense. The Psalm was sung by the
- 10:55ancient Israelites as a prayer of blessing for the king as he
- 10:59went out to battle. When Israel had a godly,
- 11:02successful king whose prayers were answered, the whole nation
- 11:06benefited. You can find that in Second
- 11:08Chronicles chapter 20, verses one through 30.
- 11:12And that will conclude Psalm 21 for today.
- 11:16So if you found this beneficial, please share this with others.
- 11:19And if you're not subscribed and want to stay in the Word, please

- 11:24Psalm 21. Thank you.
