- 0:00Speaker 1: I wanted to turn my attention, turn our attention. Well,
- 0:02we were already talking college football, but another element of it,
- 0:09in addition to mentioning how at this time of year,
- 0:14that's when you start hearing the grousing and grumbling when
- 0:16things don't go well for certain teams for whom more
- 0:21was expected, anticipated and projected. The other projections that happened
- 0:26this year, there's at this time of year, there's obviously
- 0:29bold projections, there's playoff projections as well, and their Heisman
- 0:34Trophy projections. Now, the mid season Heisman Watch votes are in.
- 0:41According to our friend Max Olsen, the ESPN who covered
- 0:46the Longhorns for a long time, and he has a
- 0:48list of that we'll get to in a minute. But
- 0:49first of all, I want to hear from the guy
- 0:52who's projected to be if the Longhorns have a Heisman candidate,
- 0:57would be Quinn Ewers. However, Quinn has missed two and
- 0:59a half games before coming back last week against Oklahoma,
- 1:03and he didn't have a Heisman like performance, but he
- 1:07did well enough, certainly in the Longhorns victory. So here
- 1:11was some thoughts from Quinn yours yesterday in the media
- 1:15conversation that he had when they made the players available
- 1:19for questions.
- 1:20Speaker 2: We try to go into every week without anything changing
- 1:24in our mentality of how we approach pro games. But
- 1:27you know, we're human beings. We understand that, you know,
- 1:29there's there's two really good teams coming together, and I
- 1:33know our team is excited for the opportunity, and you know, again,
- 1:37we're just excited. It's been tough just because you know,
- 1:40throughout the week you don't have live bullets flying at you,
- 1:42and you know the speed of the game is just
- 1:45not the same in practice, but you try to emulate
- 1:47it as best as we can. And then yeah, I mean,
- 1:51I'm not gonna say see here in believer the point,
- 1:55but I don't think I played as well as I
- 1:57needed to play for the standard. And I'm just going
- 2:01to try to continue and and and and try to
- 2:03you know, practice as well as I can and pick
- 2:05up the tempo within myself that I think that starts
- 2:09earlier in the week and just knowing that there's going
- 2:13to be swings and knowing knowing how big momentum changes
- 2:16are and understanding that there's gonna be adversity. But it's
- 2:19it's it's how you you come back and and and
- 2:23see what happens after that. And it's it's I mean
- 2:25I said it after the game, after the Oklahoma game,
- 2:27it's it's ten percent of what happens to you, ninety
- 2:30percent of how you how you overcome it. Don't get
- 2:33too caught up and how big a game is or
- 2:37what the environment of the game is going to be.
- 2:39But just continue to to focus on us and at
- 2:43the end of the day, just rely on each other.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Yeah. Uh the important stuff for for Quinn years. And
- 2:48if you talk to Quinn, if if you even bring
- 2:51up the Heisman thing, he's very dismissive of it and said, uh,
- 2:54I haven't done enough to be even mentioned the category.
- 2:57Let me tell you someth Max Olsom with the ESPN
- 2:59agrees with him because he in his Heisman watch he
- 3:03has the top five candidates And have you looked at
- 3:09this list? I have not. Okay, all right, so good.
- 3:12I want to get your your your thoughts if if
- 3:17you were to name let's start with number five, number
- 3:21five on the list. I don't think you're going to
- 3:22get this guy. He is a quarterback. I don't think
- 3:25you're going to get him. But if you want to
- 3:28take a take a shot.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Is he power five? Power four?
- 3:31Speaker 1: He is power four. I'll give you another hint. I'll
- 3:36give you another hint. He's in the big ten.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Dylan Gabriel.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Dylan Gabriel is on the list, but he's not at
- 3:41number five. He's at number four, So Will Howard it
- 3:45is not worth rall. No, like I said, I didn't
- 3:49think he would probably get this one. I'm trying to
- 3:52think of who's who's undefeated. M go ahead and tell
- 3:59me Cis Rourke quarterback Indiana. Curtis Rourke quarterback, Indiana. Okay,
- 4:08so this is this is I found this kind of interesting.
- 4:13And of course Indiana's big game this week. They've got
- 4:15Nebraska on Saturday. I think that's the big newon kickoff
- 4:18the Fox game.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Okay.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Max Olson, who like I said, I admire his work,
- 4:25does good work. His take on this and this is
- 4:28the guy's number five, not number one. On was number five, says.
- 4:32Finding a new starting quarterback in the transfer portal was
- 4:34high on coach Kirk Signetti's to do list upon taking
- 4:37the Indiana job. Remember, Signetti was the coach at James
- 4:40Madison yep, and this is his first year and He's
- 4:44got them six and oh for the first time since
- 4:47nineteen sixty seven. He found a proven winner to build
- 4:50around in Rurke, a thirty three game starter at Ohio
- 4:54You who'd thrown for more than seventy five hundred yards
- 4:57and earned MAC Offensive Player of the Year in twenty
- 4:59twenty two. Together, they just keep winning. The six year
- 5:02senior has been superb during the Hoosier stunning six and
- 5:06oh start and rise to number sixteen in the Ape Pole,
- 5:09passing for seventeen hundred and fifty two yards with sixteen
- 5:12total touchdowns and two interceptions on a Big Ten best
- 5:15eleven yards per attempt. He has a QBR ninety one
- 5:19point nine, best among power for starting quarterbacks while masterfully
- 5:26operating a rebuilt offense at scoring forty seven and a
- 5:29half points per game. His experience and efficiency have injected
- 5:32a ton of confidence into a team that went three
- 5:34and nine a year ago. So there's that, and then
- 5:38there's that. He lists a Heisman moment for each guy,
- 5:41but I'm not going to go into that right now.
- 5:42Dylan Gabriel is number four on the list, and it
- 5:46talks about, you know, the move he made to Eugene
- 5:49He's accounted for eighteen hundred ninety three yards and seventeen
- 5:53touchdowns and three interceptions. He's completed a career high seventy
- 5:56six percent of his passes. It says a twelve to
- 5:59zero run through Oregon's regular season schedule looks entirely possible now,
- 6:03which would certainly keep Gabriel in the Heisman race the
- 6:06rest of the way. His Heisman moment, by the way,
- 6:09he's listed his performance against Ohio State all right, number
- 6:13three on the list. Another quarterback, another Power four.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Got some Kim Ward or Jaylen Milroe.
- 6:20Speaker 1: You got it the first time. It's cam Ward, the
- 6:23Miami quarterback who, of course transferred in from Washington State
- 6:26six games in. Ward is truly exceeding Miami fans wildest expectations.
- 6:31Washington State transfer took over a team that went seven
- 6:34and six in twenty twenty three and turned it into
- 6:36the undefeated front runner to win the acc numbers for him.
- 6:41He's averaging over twelve yards per attempt on third downs,
- 6:44according to True Media, that is best among all FBS
- 6:47starting quarterbacks. He is the Hurricanes heart number one nationally
- 6:51in third down conversions. They're converting sixty percent of their
- 6:55third downs. That's pretty dog gone good and Ward has
- 6:59played sixty four snaps on third downs and has accounted
- 7:01for five hundred and fifty nine total yards and seven touchdowns.
- 7:05He's number three, Number two Travis Hunter. Very good, good,
- 7:10very good. Travis Hunter said nobody else in college football
- 7:14can do what Hunter does to way star future first
- 7:17round pick got off to a dominant start. His Heisman
- 7:22moment was his Heisman pose after they won at UCF
- 7:26on that deal, although they did end up losing last
- 7:30week against Kansas State because he suffered a shoulder injury
- 7:34and had to miss the second half of the game.
- 7:36So we'll see how he is going. So that leaves
- 7:39number one, and I think you know who number one
- 7:40is on the Heisman and nobody, nobody on the planet
- 7:45I don't think would have picked this guy to be
- 7:47the leader. Going to the back nine if you will here.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Arch Manning, oh No, Ashton gent Yeah, the Boise State
- 7:54running back who already has twelve hundred yards. He's almost
- 7:59ninety nine yards away from eclipsing his season total for
- 8:01last season. A fantastic running back and even when teams
- 8:05put eight or nine guys in the box, he still
- 8:07finds a way to break one loose.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Native Texan, Texas high school football star, former Frisco lone
- 8:13Star stand out running back. Here's some of the numbers
- 8:18that are just crazy. You mentioned the twelve hundred and
- 8:20forty eight rushing yards and eighteen total touchdowns. He's averaging
- 8:25nine point nine yards per carry. So he is way
- 8:30ahead of Barry Sanders records on a number of things.
- 8:34First of all, the single season rushing record, he's ahead
- 8:37of that pace. Remember Barry Sanders ran for twenty eight
- 8:40hundred and fifty yards and had forty four touchdowns back
- 8:43in nineteen eighty eight. Remember that twenty eight hundred and
- 8:46fifty yards and forty four touchdowns. Right now he is
- 8:51on a pace to have twenty nine hundred rushing yards
- 8:56and fifty touchdowns. He's on a pace to break all
- 8:58of that. Soh His Heisman moment was against Oregon, even
- 9:05though they lost. Of course, he ran for one hundred
- 9:07and ninety two yards against the number two ranked Oregon Ducks.
- 9:12So he, according to Max Olsen, is the Heisman front
- 9:18runner right now, and I don't know that anybody could
- 9:20really argue with that. It's amazing numbers that he has
- 9:24put up. Now again I understand, by and large most
- 9:28of his action has come against the Utah States and
- 9:31some of the other teams and say, well, yeah, what
- 9:33about the competition. Hey, he ran for one to ninety
- 9:36two on Oregon. Now, Oregon's defense is not top tier level,
- 9:43it's not even I don't think it's Texas level on
- 9:46the defense, but they find ways. Obviously with Dylan Gabriel, taluts,
- 9:49slug it out, scoring, you do all that sort of thing. Still,
- 9:52in all, that's a G five school with a G
- 9:55five offensive line and a G five supposedly running back
- 10:00could play on any Power four team and had one
- 10:03hundred and ninety two rushing yards against him.
- 10:05Speaker 3: And there's a chance that you know, Boise State can
- 10:07run the table whin the Mountain West and they can
- 10:09be that group of five team in the playoff, which
- 10:12would give Janty more time, more games to break that record,
- 10:16get on the national stage. And I mean this is
- 10:19you know, it's always a weird award. It goes usually
- 10:21to the best quarterback on the number one team in
- 10:23the country. But Janty, I don't think there's been a
- 10:26quarterback that we've seen really blow anybody away. It was
- 10:29Milrae after the Georgia game. For the last two weeks,
- 10:31he has not looked good at all. Carson Beck has
- 10:34had a lot of interceptions thrown, and Quinn Yuers has
- 10:37been hurt, and he's been hurt and didn't play well
- 10:39against Oklahoma. Now he could throw for four hundred against
- 10:41Georgia and all of a sudden he's back to number two.
- 10:43But I think Jante by far is leading this race.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Now.
- 10:46Speaker 3: I think Travis Hunter is the best overall college football player,
- 10:49but Janty so far having the best season.
- 10:51Speaker 1: I think you make a great point on if Boise
- 10:53State makes the playoff. And I've said this every week
- 10:57for the past several weeks, I'm going to say it again.
- 11:00We have had more conversation about G five Group of
- 11:03five teams than ever before. Why because a G five
- 11:07school is guaranteed to be in the playoff, the top
- 11:10four of the Power four conference champions all will get buys,
- 11:14But that fifth spot, it's the top five highest rated
- 11:19conference champions who get in. The reason why they say
- 11:22highest rated is because of all the G five leagues,
- 11:25the American Conference, USA, Sun Belt, min American you know
- 11:29all of those so and Mountain West. Well, of course
- 11:33he's in the Mountain West. Boise State has one loss.
- 11:37Boise State is not a fan of Army or Navy
- 11:40right now, they're really going to be a fan of
- 11:42Notre Dame. They want Notre Dame to beat hand Army
- 11:45and Navy losses so that they can have in the
- 11:48Beauty Contest be the best and highest ranked one loss
- 11:53conference champion. The one loss was that air tight shootout
- 11:56with Oregon, so that's what they're hoping for. But if
- 12:00Army Navy continue on this unbeaten collision course, and my goodness,
- 12:03if even one let alone both should find a way
- 12:06to beat Notre Dame, all bets are off at that point.
- 12:09Then you're gonna come down to the final thing. As
- 12:12Flounders said in Animal House, Oh Boys, was great. It's
- 12:17gonna be a lot of fun to watch that the
- 12:19way that that goes. All right, we've got more coming
- 12:22up here. We'll have some more NFL notes when we
- 12:24continue on this Tuesday afternoon here on Sports Radio AM
- 12:27thirteen under the Zone and the IR Radio app.
