- 0:42Welcome to the Daily Audio Torah. Today is August
- 0:4617th. Now let's continue our journey reading through the entire Bible
- 0:50in 1 year.
- 0:55This week we are reading from the Israel Bible for the Old Testament
- 0:58and from the King James for the New Testament.
- 1:04Deuteronomy 8:1-20.
- 1:10You shall faithfully observe all the instruction that I enjoin upon you
- 1:14today, that you may thrive and increase and be
- 1:17able to possess the land that Hashem promised on oath to your
- 1:21fathers. Remember the long way that Hashem your
- 1:25God has made you travel in the wilderness these past 40 years,
- 1:29that He might test you by hardships to learn what was in your hearts,
- 1:34whether you would keep His commandments or not.
- 1:38He subjected you to the hardship of hunger and then gave
- 1:41you manna to eat, which neither you nor your fathers
- 1:45had ever known, in order to teach you that man does not
- 1:49live on bread alone, but that man may live on anything that
- 1:53Hashem decrees. The clothes upon you did
- 1:57not wear out, nor did your feet swell these 40
- 2:00years. Bear in mind that Hashem your God disciplines
- 2:04you just as a man disciplines his son. Therefore,
- 2:08keep the commandments of Hashem your God, walk in His ways,
- 2:11and revere Him. For Hashem your God is bringing you into
- 2:15a good land, A land with streams and springs and
- 2:19fountains issuing from plain and hill. A land of
- 2:23wheat and barley, of vines, figs, and pomegranates. A land
- 2:27of olive trees and honey. A land where you may eat food
- 2:30without stint, where you will lack nothing. A land
- 2:34whose rocks are iron and from whose hills you
- 2:38can mine copper. When you have eaten your fill, give thanks
- 2:42to Hashem your God for the good land which He has given you.
- 2:45Take care lest you forget Hashem your God and fail to keep His commandments,
- 2:49His rules, and His laws, which I enjoin upon
- 2:53you today. When you have eaten your fill and have built
- 2:57fine houses to live in, and your herds and flocks have multiplied,
- 3:01and your silver and gold have increased, and everything you own has
- 3:05prospered, beware lest
- 3:09your heart grow haughty And you forget Hashem your God, who freed
- 3:13you from the land of Egypt, the house of slavery,
- 3:17who led you through the great and terrible wilderness with
- 3:22its serpents and scorpions, a parched land with no water in
- 3:26it, who brought forth water for you from the flinty rock,
- 3:31who fed you in the wilderness with manna which your
- 3:35fathers had never known, in order to test you by hardships,
- 3:39only to benefit you in the end, and you say to yourselves,
- 3:43my own power and the might of my own hand
- 3:47have won this wealth for me. Remember that it is
- 3:51Hashem your God who gives you the power to get wealth,
- 3:54in fulfillment of the covenant that He made on oath with your
- 3:58fathers, as is still the case. If you do forget Hashem
- 4:02your God and follow other gods to serve them or bow down to them,
- 4:07I warn you this day that you shall certainly perish.
- 4:11Like the nations that Hashem will cause to perish before you,
- 4:15so shall you perish, because you did not heed
- 4:19Hashem your God.
- 4:26Nehemiah 12:27-13:31.
- 4:32At the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, the Levi'im,
- 4:36wherever they lived, were sought out and brought to Jerusalem to celebrate
- 4:40a joyful dedication with thanksgiving and with song,
- 4:44accompanied by cymbals, harps, and lyres.
- 4:47The companies of singers assembled from the Jordan Plain,
- 4:51the environs of Jerusalem, and from the Netophathite
- 4:55villages, from Beth-hagilol, from the countryside
- 4:59of Gerba, and Azmaveth, for the singers built
- 5:02themselves villages in the environs of Jerusalem.
- 5:06The Kohanim and the Levi'im purified themselves.
- 5:09Then they purified the people, and the gates, and the wall.
- 5:13I had the officers of Judah go up onto the wall, and I appointed
- 5:172 large thanksgiving choirs and processions.
- 5:22One marched south on the wall to the Dung Gate. Behind them
- 5:26were Hoshaiah and half the officers of Judah, and Azariah,
- 5:30Ezra, Meshullam, Jehudah, Benjamin,
- 5:34Shemaiah, and Jeremiah, and some of the young Kohanim with trumpets:
- 5:39Zechariah son of Jonathan, son of Shemaiah, son of Mattaniah,
- 5:42son of Micaiah, son of Zacur, son of Asaph,
- 5:47and his brothers Shemaiah and Azarel, Milalai,
- 5:52Gilali, Maai, Nethanel, Jehuda, and Hanani,
- 5:56with the musical instruments of David the man of Hashem,
- 6:00and Ezra the scribe went ahead of them.
- 6:06From there to the Fountain Gate, where they ascended
- 6:09the steps of the City of David directly before them,
- 6:12by the ascent on the wall above the House of David, and onward
- 6:16to the Water Gate on the east. The other Thanksgiving
- 6:20Choir marched on the wall in the opposite direction with me and
- 6:24half the people behind it above the Tower of Ovens to the Broad
- 6:29Wall, and above the Gate of Ephraim, the Jeshanah Gate, the Fish
- 6:33Gate, the Tower of Hananel, the Tower of the Hundred,
- 6:36to the Sheep Gate, and they halted at the Gate of the Prison Compound.
- 6:41Both Thanksgiving Choirs halted at the House of Hashem. And I,
- 6:46and half the prefects with me, and the Kohanim,
- 6:49Eliakim, Maseiah, Miniamin,
- 6:52Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah,
- 6:56Hananiah with trumpets, and Maseiah and Shemaiah,
- 6:59Eleazar, Uzzi, Jahchanan,
- 7:03Malkijah, Elam, and Ezer. Then the singers sounded
- 7:07forth with Jezariah in charge. On that day they offered
- 7:11great sacrifices and rejoiced. For Hashem
- 7:14made them rejoice greatly. The women and children also rejoiced,
- 7:19and the rejoicing in Jerusalem could be heard from afar.
- 7:22At that time, men were appointed over the chambers that served
- 7:27as treasuries for the gifts, the first fruits, and the tithes, into which
- 7:31the portions prescribed by the teaching for the Kohanim
- 7:35and Levi'im were gathered from the fields of the towns.
- 7:38For the people of Yehudah were grateful to the Kohanim and Levi'im who
- 7:42were in attendance. Who kept the charge of
- 7:46their God and the charge of purity, as well as to the singers
- 7:49and gatekeepers serving in accord with the ordinance of
- 7:53David and Solomon his son. For the chiefs of the singers
- 7:57and songs of praises and thanksgiving to Hashem already existed
- 8:01in the time of David and Asaph. And in
- 8:04the time of Zerubbabel and in the time of Nehemiah,
- 8:08all Israel contributed the daily portions of the singers and the
- 8:12gatekeepers and made sacred contributions for the Levi'im and the Levi'im
- 8:16made sacred contributions for the Aaronites.
- 8:22At that time they read to the people from the Book of Moses, and it
- 8:26was found written that no Ammonite or Moabite might
- 8:29ever enter the congregation of Hashem,
- 8:34since they did not meet Israel with bread and water and
- 8:38hired Balaam against them to curse them. But our God turned
- 8:42the curse into a blessing. When they heard the teaching, they separated
- 8:46all the alien admixture from Israel.
- 8:51Earlier, the kohen Elishav, a relative of
- 8:54Tobiah who had been appointed over the rooms in the House of our God,
- 8:58had assigned to him a large room where they used to store
- 9:02the meal offering, the frankincense, the equipment,
- 9:06the tithes of grain, wine, and oil, the dues of
- 9:09the Levi'im, singers, and gatekeepers, and the gifts for the Kohanim.
- 9:14During all this time I was not in Jerusalem, for in the 32nd
- 9:19year of King Artaxerxes of Babylon, I went to the king and
- 9:23only after a while did I ask leave of the king to return.
- 9:30When I arrived in Jerusalem, I learned of the outrage perpetrated
- 9:34by Elishav on behalf of Tobiah and assigning him a
- 9:37room in the courts of the House of Hashem. I was greatly
- 9:42displeased and had all the household gear of Tobiah thrown out
- 9:46of the room. I gave orders to purify the rooms and
- 9:49had the equipment of the House of Hashem and the meal offering and the frankincense
- 9:54put back. I then discovered
- 9:58that the portions of the Levi'im had not been contributed and
- 10:02that the Levi'im and the singers who performed the Temple service had made
- 10:05off, each to his fields. I censured
- 10:09the prefects, saying, How is it that the House of Hashem has been neglected?
- 10:14Then I recalled the Levi'im and installed them again in their posts.
- 10:19And all Judah brought the tithes of grain, wine, and oil
- 10:22into the treasuries. I put the treasuries in the charge
- 10:26of the kohen Shelamiah, the scribe Zadok, and Pedaiah
- 10:30of the Levi'im, and assisting them was Hanan son of Zakur,
- 10:34son of Mattaniah, for they were regarded as trustworthy
- 10:38persons, and it was their duty to distribute the portions
- 10:42to their brothers.
- 10:46O my God, remember me favorably for this, and do
- 10:51not blot out the devotion I showed toward the house of my God and its
- 10:55attendants. At that
- 10:59time I saw men in Yehudah treading winepresses on the
- 11:02Sabbath. And others bringing heaps of grain and
- 11:06loading them onto donkeys, also wine, grapes, figs, and all sorts
- 11:10of goods, and bringing them into Jerusalem on
- 11:14the Sabbath. I admonished
- 11:18them there and then for selling provisions.
- 11:22Tyrians who lived there brought fish and all sorts of wares and sold them
- 11:26on the Sabbath to the Judahites in Jerusalem. I censured
- 11:30the nobles of Yehuda, saying to them, What evil thing is this
- 11:35that you are doing, profaning the Sabbath day? This is just what
- 11:39your ancestors did, and for it Hashem brought all this misfortune on
- 11:43this city. And now you give cause for further wrath against Israel
- 11:47by profaning the Sabbath.
- 11:53When the shadows filled the gateways of Jerusalem at the approach
- 11:56of the Sabbath, I gave orders that the doors be closed
- 12:00and ordered them not to be opened until after the Sabbath.
- 12:03I stationed some of my servants at the gates so that no goods should
- 12:08enter on the Sabbath. Once or twice merchants and
- 12:12the vendors of all sorts of wares spent the night outside Jerusalem.
- 12:16But I warned them, saying, What do you mean by spending the night alongside
- 12:20the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands upon you.
- 12:23From then on they did not come on the Sabbath.
- 12:27I gave orders to the Levi'im to purify themselves and to
- 12:31come and guard the gates, to preserve the sanctity of the Sabbath.
- 12:35This too, O my God, remember to my credit,
- 12:39and spare me in accordance with your abundant faithfulness.
- 12:45Also at that time I saw that Yehudim had married
- 12:49Ashdod, Ammonite, and Moabite women. A good number
- 12:53of their children spoke the language of Ashdod and the
- 12:56language of those various peoples and did not know how to speak Judean.
- 13:01I censured them, cursed them, flogged them, tore out their hair, and adjured
- 13:05them by Hashem, saying, You shall not give your daughters in
- 13:09marriage to their sons or take any
- 13:12of their daughters for your sons or yourselves.
- 13:16It was just in such things that King Solomon of
- 13:20Israel sinned. Among the many nations there was not a king like
- 13:23him, and so well loved was he by his God that Hashem made him
- 13:27king of all Israel. Yet foreign wives caused
- 13:31even him to sin. How then can we acquiesce in
- 13:35your doing this great wrong, breaking faith with our God by marrying foreign
- 13:40women? One of the sons of Jehoiada son
- 13:44of the Kohen Gadol, Elishav, was the son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite.
- 13:49I drove him away from Me.
- 13:52Remember to their discredit, O My God, how they polluted
- 13:56the priesthood, the covenant of the Kohanim and the Levi'im.
- 13:59I purged them of every foreign element and arranged for the Kohanim
- 14:03and Levi'im to work each at his task
- 14:07by shifts, and for the wood offering to be brought at
- 14:10fixed times for the First Fruits. O My God,
- 14:14remember it! To my credit.
- 14:231 Corinthians 11:1-16.
- 14:31But I, Paul, would have you know that the head of
- 14:34every man is Christ, and that the head of the woman is
- 14:38the man, and the head of Christ is God. Every man
- 14:42praying or prophesying, having his head covered,
- 14:46dishonors his head. But every woman that prays
- 14:49or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for that
- 14:54is even all one, as if she were shaven.
- 14:57For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn.
- 15:02But if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven,
- 15:05let her be covered. For a man indeed ought not to cover
- 15:09his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God;
- 15:13but the woman is the glory of the man. For the man is
- 15:17not of the woman, but the woman of the man.
- 15:21Neither was the man created for the woman, but the woman for
- 15:25the man. For this cause ought the woman to have
- 15:28power on her head, because of the angels.
- 15:32Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman,
- 15:36neither the woman without the man, in the Lord. For as
- 15:39the woman is of the man, even so is the man also
- 15:43by the woman: but all things of God.
- 15:47Judge in yourselves: Is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?
- 15:52Does not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man has long hair,
- 15:56it is a shame to him? But if a woman has long hair,
- 16:01it is a glory to her, for her hair is given her for a covering.
- 16:06But if any man seem to be contentious, we have
- 16:09no such custom, neither the churches of God.
- 16:16Psalm 35:1-16. Plead my
- 16:21cause, O Lord, with them that strive with me; fight against them that fight
- 16:25against me. Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand
- 16:28up for my help. Draw out also the spear, and stop the
- 16:32way against them that persecute me. Say unto my soul, I am
- 16:37your salvation. Let them be confounded
- 16:40and put to shame that seek after my soul. Let them be turned back and
- 16:44brought to confusion that devise my hurt.
- 16:47Let them be as chaff before the wind, and let the angel of
- 16:50the Lord Chase them! Let their way be
- 16:54dark and slippery, and let the angel of the Lord persecute them.
- 16:58For without cause have they hidden me their net in
- 17:01a pit, which without cause they have dug for my soul.
- 17:06Let destruction come upon him at unawares,
- 17:10and let his net that he has hidden catch himself;
- 17:14into that very destruction let him fall.
- 17:17And my soul shall be joyful in the Lord; it shall
- 17:21rejoice in His salvation. All my bones shall say,
- 17:24Lord, who is like unto You, which delivers the poor
- 17:28from him that is too strong for him; yes, the poor and the needy
- 17:32from him that spoils him? False witnesses did
- 17:36rise up; they laid to my charge things I knew
- 17:39not. They rewarded me evil for good, to the
- 17:43despoiling of my soul. But as for me,
- 17:46when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth.
- 17:49I humbled my soul with fasting, and my prayer returned
- 17:53to mine own bosom. I behaved myself
- 17:57as though he had been my friend or brother. I bowed down heavily as one
- 18:01that mourns for his mother. But in your adversity
- 18:05they rejoiced and gathered themselves together. Yes,
- 18:08the abjects gathered themselves together against me, and I know
- 18:12it not. They did tear me, and chased not.
- 18:16With hypocritical mockers and feasts they gnashed upon me
- 18:20with their teeth.
- 18:25Proverbs 21:17-18.
- 18:28He that loves pleasure shall be a poor man; he that
- 18:32loves wine and oil shall not be rich.
- 18:35The wicked shall be a ransom for the righteous; and the transgressor
- 18:39for the upright. I want to speak to you today
- 18:44from Deuteronomy chapter 8, and I want to begin in verse
- 18:487. For Hashem your God is bringing you into a good land,
- 18:52a land with streams and springs and fountains issuing from plain and
- 18:56hill, a land of wheat and barley, of vines,
- 18:59figs, and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey,
- 19:03A land where you may eat food without stint, where you will
- 19:07lack nothing, a land whose rocks are iron and from
- 19:11whose hills you can mine copper.
- 19:15The Israel Bible commentary to verse 8 is the
- 19:18following: A land of wheat and barley, of vines, figs, and pomegranates.
- 19:23The Torah names 7 species as the special agricultural
- 19:28products of Eretz Israel. Even today, these 7 crops
- 19:32can be seen growing all over Israel. In particular,
- 19:36the pomegranate has always been a symbol of beauty. Its unique
- 19:41shape was a favorite design element appearing on
- 19:44the priestly garments and the pillars at the entrance to the
- 19:48Beit HaMikdash, the temple in Jerusalem.
- 19:54And so I
- 19:58want to now jump to verse 18.
- 20:01Remember that it is Hashem your God who gives you
- 20:04the power to get wealth in fulfillment
- 20:08of the covenant He made on oath with your fathers,
- 20:12as is still the case. If you do forget
- 20:16Hashem your God and follow other gods to serve them or bow down
- 20:20to them, I warn you this day that you shall certainly
- 20:25perish. Like the nations that Hashem will cause to perish
- 20:28before you, so shall you perish because
- 20:33you did not heed Hashem your God.
- 20:39So this verse is so relevant
- 20:43today, and what can happen
- 20:47is You raise
- 20:51children.
- 20:59What can happen is a person can grow up in a family and be raised
- 21:02in a church setting and go to church every week and
- 21:08live in a Christian environment in a home,
- 21:12and off they go to college. And then they get their degree,
- 21:15and maybe it's in accounting or engineering
- 21:19or computer science or whatever the degree might be. They go off into a
- 21:23career field, and then they start to get successful
- 21:27and make a lot of money and buy
- 21:30a house, get married, have a wife and kids. And all of a sudden,
- 21:35that person has forgotten the Lord their God.
- 21:40And they're chasing after money to
- 21:45serve and bow down to it, to make sure they have a
- 21:48big 401k, to make sure they have a big beautiful house.
- 21:54I warn you this day that you shall certainly perish like
- 21:59the nations that Hashem will cause to perish before you. So shall you perish because
- 22:03you did not heed Hashem your God.
- 22:06Now, I'm not saying
- 22:10that it's wrong to own a house or to have a big 401,
- 22:13but in the scheme of things, the grand scheme of things,
- 22:17what is the priority? Has God been made irrelevant?
- 22:22Is God not even a factor in the equation anymore?
- 22:27The thing we have to be so careful of is that when a person becomes
- 22:31successful, in the world, and they have become
- 22:35a homeowner, and they have a great lucrative career,
- 22:39that all of a sudden there's just no time for God
- 22:43or the things of God. They're not in church. They're not in the Bible.
- 22:47They're not seeking God at all. And that,
- 22:51my friend, is a dangerous place to be.
- 22:56In Psalm 37, Verses 1 and 2, it is
- 23:00written, don't worry about the wicked or envy
- 23:03those who do wrong, for like grass they
- 23:07soon fade away, like spring flowers they soon
- 23:11wither. And in Psalm
- 23:1549, it goes on to say regarding the wicked who
- 23:18are wealthy,
- 23:22starting in verse 1, listen to this, all you people. Pay attention,
- 23:26everyone in the world. High and low, rich and poor,
- 23:30listen, for my words are wise and my thoughts
- 23:34are filled with insight. I listen carefully to many proverbs
- 23:38and solve riddles with inspiration from a harp.
- 23:42Why should I fear when trouble comes, when enemies surround me?
- 23:46They trust in their wealth and boast
- 23:50of great riches, yet they cannot redeem
- 23:54themselves from death by paying a ransom to
- 23:58God. Redemption does not come so easily,
- 24:02for no one can ever pay enough to live forever
- 24:07and never see the grave.
- 24:14Those who are wise must finally die,
- 24:17just like the foolish and senseless, leaving all their
- 24:21wealth behind. The grave is their eternal home
- 24:26where they will stay forever. They may name their estates after
- 24:30themselves, but their fame will not last.
- 24:33They will die just like animals. This is
- 24:37the fate of fools, though they are remembered as
- 24:41being wise. But as for me,
- 24:46God will redeem my life. He will snatch
- 24:49me from the power of the grave.
- 24:53So don't be dismayed when the wicked grow rich
- 24:57and their homes become ever more splendid,
- 25:01for when they die, they take nothing with them.
- 25:05Their wealth will not follow them into the
- 25:09grave. In this life, they consider themselves fortunate
- 25:14and are applauded for their success, but they will die
- 25:18like all before them and never again
- 25:21see the light of day. People who boast
- 25:26of their wealth don't understand. They will die just
- 25:29like animals.
- 25:33So that's a good reminder if you
- 25:37happen to be around other people whether
- 25:41it's co-workers or family members or neighbors who
- 25:45kind of rub your nose in their wealth and
- 25:49are a bit arrogant and proud and talk about their home
- 25:53like it's a castle, and maybe you're a renter or
- 25:58live in something very modest or humble,
- 26:02remember these words that I shared with you today from
- 26:05Psalm 49. And also remember
- 26:09the verse from Deuteronomy chapter 8, verse 18.
- 26:13Remember that it is Hashem your God who
- 26:16gives you the power to get wealth in fulfillment
- 26:19of the covenant that he made on oath with your fathers, as is
- 26:23still the case. And if you do forget the Lord
- 26:28your God and follow other gods, such as the god of
- 26:31money, the god of chasing after a house, the god
- 26:35of chasing after a big 401k,
- 26:39if that becomes the preeminent primary focus and source and
- 26:43goal, then is an idol of the heart.
- 26:46If you follow other gods to serve them or bow down to them,
- 26:50I warn you this day that you shall certainly perish.
- 26:57Remember that we have an eternal soul,
- 27:02that we're going to spend eternity After
