Transcript
- 0:00Good morning, family.
- 0:16Turn to Philippians chapter 2.
- 0:18All right.
- 0:19So, we're going to continue on our journey of Philippians chapter 2.
- 0:26It's an amazing letter and really excited to see as God works these truths out in our
- 0:33lives, how we start walking in all these things that God has been teaching us.
- 0:39So we're going to pray.
- 0:40We're going to get in.
- 0:42I hope you listen a little bit on the kids' corner because that's what today is all about,
- 0:47obedience.
- 0:48So, Father, I want to thank you so much for your faithfulness and goodness.
- 0:51Thank you, Lord, for your Word.
- 0:53Thank you that you are the God of the universe.
- 0:55You have not only do you will and work in us for your good pleasure, but you cause us,
- 1:05persevere us to do the same.
- 1:07And Lord, we thank you and we praise you.
- 1:09Help us to walk in obedience, to understand the importance of obedience and the examples
- 1:14that you have given of these two particular obedient men that God, that Paul uses to
- 1:23really help us to see the importance of living rightly.
- 1:26Lord, we thank you and we praise you in Jesus' name.
- 1:30Amen.
- 1:31So in order for us to have an understanding of what Paul is saying in Philippians chapter
- 1:362, verse 12 through 30, I'm going to move up to verse 5 and reread this because this
- 1:43is the concept.
- 1:44This is what Paul is trying to put here.
- 1:47I've said this over and over again.
- 1:49If you can get rid of the subtitles and just read God's Word without the subtitle, just
- 1:54read it or listen to it, just let it go.
- 1:59You'll get a grasp of what he's trying to say.
- 2:01I think subtitles, though, it helps us to grab a thought, really do an injustice to
- 2:07helping us to understand the context.
- 2:11Subtitles are not inspired.
- 2:13They're just there to help you.
- 2:15So verse 5, have this mind among yourselves which is yours in Christ Jesus, who though
- 2:24he was in the form of God did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied
- 2:31himself by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of man, being found in
- 2:40human form.
- 2:41He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death.
- 2:46I want you to grasp that.
- 2:50Even death on the cross.
- 2:52Therefore, God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every
- 2:56name so that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under
- 3:01the earth and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.
- 3:07Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now not only as in my presence,
- 3:16but much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling for it is
- 3:23God who works in you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
- 3:31And I want you to, did you kind of grasp what Paul is doing in the continuance of that reading?
- 3:37The context of what he's calling you to.
- 3:41In the same way that Christ became obedient to the point of death, have you ever really
- 3:47thought about how obedient are you?
- 3:52Have you obeyed God's word to the point that you die?
- 3:57In Romans 12, verse 1 and 2, therefore I urge you, brothers, in the view of God's mercy,
- 4:03to offer your body as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing unto God, for this is your
- 4:08reasonable act of worship.
- 4:12Did you get that?
- 4:13The whole point of obedience is have you really become obedient to the point of death?
- 4:20Even death on the cross, as Christ did.
- 4:23I don't think any of us have gotten to that point.
- 4:26Do you know why?
- 4:27Because obedience is uncomfortable.
- 4:31Obedience is uncomfortable.
- 4:32Principle number one, if you love Christ, you will obey him.
- 4:40Jesus says that, if you love me, you will obey me.
- 4:43The measurement of true love in Christ is unwavering obedience.
- 4:50Obedience even when it's highly difficult.
- 4:53There's nothing more difficult than the willingness to die because of obedience.
- 4:59I want you to get that.
- 5:02Jesus died willingly.
- 5:04I lay down my own life.
- 5:05No one takes it from me.
- 5:08To be obedient to the Father because that was the Father's plan.
- 5:11It's an example.
- 5:14Obedience means everything.
- 5:15Okay?
- 5:16Philippians chapter 2, verse 12 and 13, therefore, in other words, all the things I just read
- 5:22to you, right?
- 5:24Verse 5 through 11, Paul says, therefore, understanding all that I just explained to
- 5:29you, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence, but much
- 5:39more in my absence, you should continue to obey.
- 5:43You know, he doesn't tell them that they need to obey.
- 5:47He's reminding them, you've always obeyed.
- 5:49I mean, what an amazing church.
- 5:53You know, when I read the letter to the Philippians, I go, man, that's an amazing church, right?
- 5:59Don't just be a good Berean by studying the word.
- 6:01Be a good Philippian by living it.
- 6:04The Philippians live it.
- 6:07But then he says, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
- 6:11This is not the term where the people, I'm sure in the past, it says, see, in order for
- 6:17you to stay saved, you got to work it out.
- 6:19You got to work out your own salvation to maintain your salvation.
- 6:23That's not what this means.
- 6:25Work out your salvation to get saved.
- 6:27That's not what this means.
- 6:29Working out your salvation has nothing to do with the reality of your position before
- 6:34God.
- 6:35Working out your own salvation is the reality of who you are already in Christ, right?
- 6:41It's this idea that I need to practice it.
- 6:43I need to literally live it out.
- 6:47Live out your salvation with fear and trembling.
- 6:53Why?
- 6:55This fear is with reverence and honor and glory.
- 7:00I should be absolutely thrilled to obey God.
- 7:05Being obedient to God is not a burden.
- 7:07It's your freedom.
- 7:10Good choice on the song.
- 7:14It's your freedom.
- 7:15Your freedom is found when you're in obedience.
- 7:18Why?
- 7:19Because I have aligned my life with God.
- 7:22That's why he says, it is God who works in you both to will and to work for his good
- 7:28pleasure.
- 7:30You will desire and you will serve for his good pleasure.
- 7:35If you're truly born again, you're going to live your life out in that way with fear and
- 7:40trembling, with joy and the glory of God and there will nothing, nothing will stop you
- 7:46from that.
- 7:47You will accomplish and do all that God has already set in plan for you.
- 7:52He is sovereign to the detail.
- 7:59Second principle, be a faithful witness in word and deed.
- 8:03See, a person who loves and obeys God will be faithful in word and deed.
- 8:13You are not just a witness of Christ through sharing the word of Christ, but also a witness
- 8:18in how you live.
- 8:22The picture you leave them, the world, to see speaks volumes of the faith that you claim
- 8:30you have.
- 8:33You can't say, I love Jesus and just go out and live any way you want.
- 8:39I have to question your sincerity.
- 8:44And this is what he challenges and he exhorts the church in Philippi.
- 8:49He says, listen, there's more at stake here besides your faithful witness of the gospel
- 8:54and your commitment to obedience.
- 8:57Here, do all things without grumbling or disputing.
- 9:04It's the number one issue Christians have.
- 9:06What do we do?
- 9:07I do it all the time.
- 9:08It's so bad.
- 9:11I can't watch the news.
- 9:14Do all things without grumbling or disputing.
- 9:17But we do.
- 9:18Why?
- 9:19Because it's easy.
- 9:20What kind of witness does that leave?
- 9:24Verse 15.
- 9:25So if we're doing all things without grumbling or complaining or disputing, that you may be
- 9:30blameless and innocent.
- 9:34You ever notice that when you grumble and complain, what does the world say about you?
- 9:40You're a hypocrite.
- 9:43You have nothing else to be happy about besides you.
- 9:48You just want to grumble and complain about life is terrible.
- 9:54But when you're not grumbling and you're not complaining, you are blameless and innocent.
- 9:59There's nothing as children of God, there's nothing that anyone can bring an accusation
- 10:06against.
- 10:07You're a bubby approach.
- 10:08Children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation.
- 10:13In other words, it should not shock you that sinful people sin.
- 10:20But what we've done in churches today is we have expected that the sinner should come
- 10:25into the presence of church and live as if they're believers.
- 10:30And what do you have?
- 10:32Churches full of unseer believers.
- 10:36Lost people.
- 10:39No commitment to obedience.
- 10:41No commitment to honor and to love God.
- 10:43No commitment to walk in the things of God.
- 10:47There's none of that is there.
- 10:48What do they do?
- 10:49They grumble and they dispute and they're not blameless or innocent because they're
- 10:54not children of God.
- 10:56And so we as children of God must be above reproach, must be blemish, must be without
- 11:03blemish in the midst of a very crooked and twisted world we live in.
- 11:09That's the difference.
- 11:12How can they tell the difference?
- 11:16And then he says this, among whom when you don't grumble, complain, when you are blameless
- 11:22and innocent, when you are children without blemish, you shine as lights in the world.
- 11:32And people who shine as lights in the world, people who aren't grumbling, complain, people
- 11:36who are blameless and innocent, and the children of God without blemish hold fast to the very
- 11:43thing that keeps them, perseveres them, called holding fast to the word of life.
- 11:52The word of God is the key.
- 11:56So that in the day of Christ, I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.
- 12:03This is what Paul's saying.
- 12:04Paul's saying, listen, please, can you not do all this?
- 12:08And can you make sure that you're doing this?
- 12:11Because when you're holding fast to the word of life, all right, something that's very
- 12:16important is that I don't want to, when Christ comes, see the investment and time and work
- 12:24that I put into you go to waste.
- 12:32I don't want to run in vain or labor in vain.
- 12:36In other words, don't waste my time is what he's basically saying.
- 12:42Even if I am poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith,
- 12:49I am glad and rejoice with you.
- 12:51Why does he say that?
- 12:52After he says, I don't want to run in vain, I'm happy you're holding fast to these things,
- 12:57make sure you maintain that.
- 13:01The sacrifice that I am putting in for you, I am glad and I rejoice with you.
- 13:07The fact that we can be persecuted for the gospel and persecuted for our faith that we're
- 13:12not only speaking the gospel, but we're living it out.
- 13:16And I want you also, likewise, you should also be glad and rejoice with me because we
- 13:23are co-laborers suffering together.
- 13:28Are you joyful with the family when we're going through trials and troubles and struggles?
- 13:33You should be.
- 13:35It tells you about the genuineness of your faith.
- 13:40And then Paul gives you two very important examples here.
- 13:43If there's anyone, if there are two men that Paul clarifies about the reality of this life
- 13:51that the Philippians are so faithfully doing.
- 13:55Paul gives two more examples and this is what he says, I want you to, principle number three,
- 14:01faithful men will be faithful in word and deed.
- 14:05This is for you men.
- 14:08Though this principle is for everybody, everyone should be faithful in word and deed.
- 14:12This is specifically for the men because it's your responsibility to lead.
- 14:19It's not the women's responsibility to lead.
- 14:23It's yours.
- 14:25It's ours.
- 14:27And we will do so here.
- 14:29And we are doing so.
- 14:30But I'm going to exhort you and challenge you.
- 14:34Think about this.
- 14:35Faithful men will be faithful in word and deed.
- 14:38What you do faithfully today, gentlemen, will build confidence in what you do tomorrow.
- 14:45Therefore, there is no substitute for faithfulness.
- 14:50In chapter two, verse 19 through 24, I hope in the Lord Jesus to send you Timothy, to
- 15:00send Timothy to you soon so that I too may be cheered by the news of you.
- 15:09I want you to get that out of everybody that Paul chooses to send to the Philippian church.
- 15:17He sends Timothy, his son in the Lord.
- 15:22Why?
- 15:23Because this guy, and I want to say this to the young men.
- 15:27Okay, this is to Chase and to Owen and to all the young men.
- 15:32You want to be an example, you want to have an example of a godly man?
- 15:36Timothy.
- 15:38What a phenomenal young man.
- 15:41To be honest with you, if anyone had daughters, this would be the guy I'd be like, yeah.
- 15:49I want that to be my son-in-law.
- 15:51I want this gentleman.
- 15:53What a dude.
- 15:54Now, look at what he says.
- 15:58Because I know that when Timothy comes to you, he's going to bring me news that the
- 16:02work and the labor that I have put in you has not gone in vain.
- 16:06I'm going to be able to be cheerful about the work that's been accomplished.
- 16:11This is what he says, verse 20, for I have no one like him.
- 16:16Out of all the men Paul has, one is the man that I think is worthy of this responsibility.
- 16:27Timothy.
- 16:28I have no one like him who will genuinely, who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare.
- 16:35You notice Timothy's heart.
- 16:37Timothy's not there because Paul sent him.
- 16:40Timothy's not there because he wants to make Paul happy.
- 16:43Timothy's there because he genuinely has a concern for the people of Philippi.
- 16:50He loves God's people.
- 16:53Faithful men love God's people.
- 16:57You need to love God's people who live in your house, and you need to love God's people
- 17:00who live in this, who meet and gather at this house.
- 17:05You love God's people.
- 17:07Okay?
- 17:08Look what he says in verse 21, for they, all the other, all the other quote unquote men,
- 17:14all they, all, for they all seek their own interest and not those of Jesus Christ.
- 17:21Second thing, Timothy seeks genuine concern and welfare for the Philippians because he
- 17:30is interested in what Christ wants.
- 17:34Period.
- 17:35A heart fully devoted to being obedient to God.
- 17:40Verse 22, but you know Timothy's proven worth.
- 17:46In other words, Timothy has been tested.
- 17:52Now you know why Timothy was given the responsibility to be the pastor of the Ephesian church.
- 18:02He has proven himself.
- 18:05You got to, you got to prove this out.
- 18:09Pastors aren't pastor because they say they're pastors.
- 18:12There are churches full of pastors that aren't pastors.
- 18:16They need to prove themselves out.
- 18:17How do they prove it out?
- 18:18They prove it out by knowing and teaching the full counsel of God's word.
- 18:24Not telling you what makes you happy, but being honest with you with the truth and being
- 18:30sound in doctrine.
- 18:32You first and second Timothy, you have a clear understanding.
- 18:36Paul's exhortation to Timothy.
- 18:40Then he says, how as a son with a father, he has served me in the gospel.
- 18:49Notice Timothy's heart.
- 18:51Gospel.
- 18:53Nothing else matters but gospel.
- 18:55It's your number one responsibility is the gospel.
- 18:58God has not given you anything else but gospel.
- 19:00And over and over and over again from chapter one into chapter two, that's what you're
- 19:04hearing.
- 19:05Gospel, gospel, gospel.
- 19:09Do it.
- 19:10Do gospel.
- 19:13And he says this, I hope therefore to send him just as soon as I see how it will go with
- 19:20me.
- 19:21And I trust in the Lord that shortly I myself will come also.
- 19:26I'm going to make sure once everything gets settled here, I'm sending Timothy to you
- 19:30for you because he genuinely loves you, genuinely cares for you.
- 19:35He's seeking the interest of Christ and he has been a well proven young man in the Lord.
- 19:43Why?
- 19:45Because he has served with me for the sake of the gospel.
- 19:50Faithful men will be faithful in word and deed.
- 19:54You have two opportunities every month, gentlemen, to grow in word so that you can live in deed,
- 20:01in discipleship with other men.
- 20:05Second and fourth Saturday of every month, eight o'clock in the morning.
- 20:10No reason why you can't be here.
- 20:12If you can't give God four hours of time to get together with men, to work out your salvation,
- 20:18to learn of him in that little bit of time every month.
- 20:24That doesn't mean there's not going to be times when it's going to be busy.
- 20:26I get it.
- 20:27But if you have a free time and there's nothing going on that day, make it your ambition to
- 20:33be there for a couple hours and hang out with guys so we can talk together about Christ
- 20:38and his word, man to man.
- 20:41Learn biblical manhood.
- 20:43Okay?
- 20:44That's my challenge to you as men, because everyone is watching you.
- 20:54Next principle.
- 20:56You are what God says you are.
- 20:59Let's go.
- 21:02And you do what God has for you to do.
- 21:07Romans chapter nine verse 21, has the potter no right over the clay to make out of the
- 21:13same lump one vessel of honorable use and another of dishonorable use?
- 21:19God has determined who you are, whose you are, what you are, and what you will do.
- 21:27It's his determination.
- 21:30The reason why I use that Bible verse is because you see this very clear example of a vessel
- 21:36of honorable use named Epaphroditus.
- 21:42Epaphroditus, what a gentleman.
- 21:47What a man committed.
- 21:50Now I want you to hear this list.
- 21:52Philippians chapter two verse 25 through 30.
- 21:54I have thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fellow worker
- 22:03and fellow soldier and your messenger and minister to meet to my need.
- 22:09Do you hear that list?
- 22:11First thing, Epaphroditus is family.
- 22:14Epaphroditus is a co-worker for the sake of the gospel and Epaphroditus is a soldier
- 22:18of the living God.
- 22:20And he is a messenger that you have sent who was there to minister to my need.
- 22:29You are what God says you are and you will do what God says you will do.
- 22:35And that's exactly what happens with Epaphroditus.
- 22:38Epaphroditus was sent to care for Paul from the Philippian church and not only did he
- 22:45do that but he did far more.
- 22:47Look what it says in verse 26.
- 22:51For he has been longing for you all.
- 22:54In other words, he misses the family.
- 22:58I get excited when I haven't seen somebody in a while and I walk in and I'm like, I'm
- 23:04like beeline.
- 23:07I just get excited when I don't see you and I see you and you're like there he is and
- 23:12there she is.
- 23:13Hey, hey, give me a hug.
- 23:15I get excited.
- 23:17How can you not get excited?
- 23:20And at the same time, that's the point what Paul is saying here that Epaphroditus was
- 23:26he was like man I miss him.
- 23:28I miss the family.
- 23:35This is what he says because he has been longing for you all and has been distressed because
- 23:41you heard that he was ill.
- 23:43He was worried that they were worried.
- 23:47Now, people go pastor don't worry.
- 23:51I can't help it.
- 23:52I'm worried that you're worried which makes me worry.
- 23:58I know.
- 23:59Don't be anxious about anything but in everything by prayer and supplication with Thanksgiving.
- 24:02I get it.
- 24:03But I can't help it.
- 24:06It's a shepherd issue and that's exactly what Epaphroditus is doing.
- 24:11He's like I'm distressed because you heard of I was they heard that I was ill.
- 24:16I'm like worried about it.
- 24:17I don't want them to worry.
- 24:18Everything's okay.
- 24:20And then Paul says this.
- 24:21Indeed he was ill near to near to death.
- 24:26He got really sick.
- 24:28He was going to die.
- 24:30But look at what Paul says.
- 24:32But God had mercy on him and not only on him but me also.
- 24:37Why?
- 24:38Lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.
- 24:41God had mercy on him and me so that I didn't have to worry.
- 24:47I didn't have to have sorrow.
- 24:49I didn't want to be.
- 24:50I didn't want to deal with his death and my illness.
- 24:54And God had mercy on us.
- 24:56When our when our sick brothers and sisters here or aren't here reach out to them touch
- 25:01them contact them make a text message if you have to.
- 25:05Sometimes it's hard.
- 25:06I get it.
- 25:07But you know what we know what's special about what we do here at Mount Eaton is our deacons
- 25:12have deacon areas now.
- 25:14They deke which is exciting.
- 25:19And their responsibility is every month to make contact with each family that that that
- 25:25they have been given.
- 25:27Now the good news some of you guys have like families of nine.
- 25:32That's pretty it's pretty easy phone call.
- 25:36But how about all the singles that we have.
- 25:39So their job is to literally make a phone call or if they see him at church say hey
- 25:43how you doing making sure that they get in contact.
- 25:50We should be all of us should be here to do the same thing as best as we possibly can.
- 25:56And this is what Paul says in verse 28.
- 26:00I am the more eager to send him therefore why that you may rejoice at seeing him again.
- 26:10What would happen when I say it this way I know when John was sick and and he I see a
- 26:18song today is in church.
- 26:21He's he's alive.
- 26:27Should you not be excited.
- 26:31Because one day I won't see him again.
- 26:39And one day I'm not going to see you.
- 26:41And one day you're not going to see me.
- 26:45And what are you going to do when family goes home.
- 26:48And you don't see them anymore.
- 26:51And that's why he says I am the more eager to send him therefore that you may rejoice
- 26:56in seeing him again.
- 26:58And every opportunity you get to see them you love the heck out of them.
- 27:07Even when we get on each other's nerves because we're family.
- 27:16And this is what he says and that I may be less anxious.
- 27:21My anxiety went away when I when I saw John he has mask on but I said whoo.
- 27:29You know even when I see families and they go away and you go on vacation and I see them
- 27:34come back from vacation.
- 27:35I'm like excited.
- 27:38Who could.
- 27:42You should do the same.
- 27:44This is what he says in verse 29 I know we're all getting teary eyed now.
- 27:47I'm sorry.
- 27:51So receive him in the Lord with all joy and honor such men.
- 28:01Be joyful and honor such a man.
- 28:05Let me say this.
- 28:09There's only one of you.
- 28:13And when God gives you godly men that lead you and that love on you.
- 28:20Man love it.
- 28:23Honor them.
- 28:25Find joy even even among the women who are leaders among the women.
- 28:32Find joy.
- 28:34God has given you godly women and godly men to lead you and to teach you and disciple
- 28:38you and to mentor you.
- 28:40And enjoy it.
- 28:45Verse 30.
- 28:47This is why for he nearly died for the work of Christ risking his life to complete what
- 28:54was lacking in your service to me.
- 28:57In other words he gave every ounce of what he had to the point that point of death even
- 29:04when I can imagine a Baphrodite is he is probably really fevered out and sick as a dog right.
- 29:12He is still serving and caring for Paul.
- 29:18He is giving it all.
- 29:21And that's why there aren't many men like that.
- 29:26So he gives us these two examples.
- 29:29So let me give you these principles one more time.
- 29:32If you love Christ you will obey him.
- 29:36The measure of true love in Christ is unwavering obedience.
- 29:41Be faithful.
- 29:43Be a faithful witness in word and indeed.
- 29:46You are not just a witness of Christ through sharing the word of Christ but you're also
- 29:50a witness in how you live.
- 29:51The picture that you leave the world to see speaks volumes of the faith you claim to have.
- 30:01Faithful men will be faithful in word and deed.
- 30:04Whatever what you do faithfully today will build confidence in what you do tomorrow.
- 30:10There is no substitute for faithfulness.
- 30:14You are what God says you are and you will do what God has for you to do.
- 30:19Therefore be faithful men.
- 30:25Give your ways to him and he will honor you.
- 30:32It's God's will for you.
- 30:33Father I want to thank you so much for your faithfulness and goodness.
- 30:38We thank you for this wonderful letter.
- 30:41We thank you for the examples you have given us about what it means to be a godly man and
- 30:46to live a life of obedience to the point of death and to give our all and to be what you
- 30:52have called us to be and to do what you have called us to do and that is gospel.
- 30:58Thank you that we're part of the family.
- 31:01Thank you that we are coworkers in this wonderful journey and mission that you have given us.
- 31:08And thank you that we can contend for the faith as faithful soldiers being a faithful
- 31:13witness and serving the family.
- 31:17Lord we praise you and we thank you in Jesus name.
