- 0:10Speaker 1: Him good. 2 Samuel 10.12 Dear God, etch in the
- 0:18Speaker 1: foundations of my heart that I am a giant killer,
- 0:22Speaker 1: like David in 2 Samuel 10. I will not cower
- 0:26Speaker 1: and run away when I am faced with challenges and
- 0:29Speaker 1: limiting mindsets. that try to loom over areas of my life.
- 0:34Speaker 1: As I build my faith on your word, my feet
- 0:37Speaker 1: will move with purpose and speed in the direction of
- 0:41Speaker 1: my calling, knowing that the armies of heaven are backing
- 0:46Speaker 1: my life, like the army of Israel backed King David. Today,
- 0:52Speaker 1: I make known the truth that I am not afraid
- 0:54Speaker 1: to fight for what God has spoken over my life.

- 1:01Speaker 1: the dignity of others. Through the battles and blows of life,
- 1:06Speaker 1: I will stay on the battlefield until God gives me
- 1:09Speaker 1: the victory. I am fighting the fight of faith for
- 1:13Speaker 1: the Lord. I am fighting for more. I am fighting

- 1:50Speaker 2: Victory after victory. In our last story, David came to
- 1:56Speaker 2: the realization that that the Lord should have a temple
- 1:59Speaker 2: built for him. Nathan the prophet agreed and spoke for
- 2:03Speaker 2: the Lord, saying his kingdom would be established forever. The
- 2:08Speaker 2: Lord blessed all of David's exploits, and the kingdom of
- 2:12Speaker 2: Israel continued to grow day by day. In this story, Hanan,
- 2:17Speaker 2: king of Ammon, will humiliate David's servants, and the Ammonites
- 2:22Speaker 2: learn that David is not a king to be trifled with.
- 2:25Speaker 2: as inspired by 2 Samuel and 1 Chronicles.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Hello, this is Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:35Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. In our last episode, we
- 2:38Speaker 3: saw David's heart to honor God and build the Lord
- 2:42Speaker 3: a home, a temple where his glory could be on
- 2:45Speaker 3: display for all the world to see. As a result
- 2:48Speaker 3: of his faithfulness, David received a message from God through
- 2:52Speaker 3: the prophet Nathan. The message was this, God would establish
- 2:56Speaker 3: a lasting kingdom through David. God blessed David's efforts both
- 3:00Speaker 3: as king and as a warrior, and today we'll continue
- 3:03Speaker 3: to see the victories that God gives to David. We'll
- 3:07Speaker 3: also hear how the king of Ammon meets David's act
- 3:10Speaker 3: of kindness with distrust and disrespect and discovers that David
- 3:14Speaker 3: is not a king to be mocked or toyed with.
- 3:17Speaker 3: And as always, through it all, God's name will be
- 3:20Speaker 3: made known not just among the Israelites, but to all
- 3:24Speaker 3: the nations. Let's listen now to today's reading.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Not too far away from Israel, Nahash, the king of
- 3:33Speaker 2: the Ammonites, had died. Trumpets sounded in the distance, and
- 3:37Speaker 2: the Ammonite people mourned the death of their king. Hanan,
- 3:41Speaker 2: his son, took the throne after his father and surrounded
- 3:45Speaker 2: himself with counsel. David heard of Nahash's death and remembered
- 3:49Speaker 2: the kindness he showed David while in the There was
- 3:53Speaker 2: historic blood between the Ammonites and the Israelites. However, David
- 3:58Speaker 2: was determined to usher in a new era of peace.
- 4:02Speaker 2: David gathered some of his men to go and console
- 4:05Speaker 2: Hanun with gifts and goodwill. The servants entered the land.
- 4:10Speaker 2: There was a slight eeriness in the city when they entered.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Being Israelites in the land of the Ammonites was uncomfortable,
- 4:18Speaker 2: and whispers filled the streets as they passed. Nevertheless, the
- 4:22Speaker 2: men walked into the halls of Hanan, determined to comfort him.
- 4:26Speaker 2: The princes and counselors sat beside Hanan as David's men entered.
- 4:31Speaker 2: One of them leaned over to Hanan and whispered, Do
- 4:34Speaker 2: you really think David sent comforters because of your father?
- 4:38Speaker 2: You know they are here to spy on our land.
- 4:41Speaker 2: It is a ruse, my king. Hanan gave a slight nod,
- 4:45Speaker 2: not taking his eyes off the men as they entered
- 4:48Speaker 2: the room. The men bowed before Hanan and laid gifts
- 4:52Speaker 2: at his feet. However, corruption and paranoia had easily gripped
- 4:56Speaker 2: Hanan's mind. He stood to his feet and ordered the
- 5:00Speaker 2: servants to be taken at once. The servants were confused
- 5:04Speaker 2: at his intentions. Hanan slipped a devious smile and ordered
- 5:08Speaker 2: his men to shave off half of their beards and
- 5:11Speaker 2: cut the lower half of their robes, exposing their genitalias
- 5:14Speaker 2: before everyone.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Then.
- 5:17Speaker 2: They cast them out into the streets for all to see.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Ammonite cackles filled the city streets as the men ran
- 5:24Speaker 2: in embarrassment. Tears of shame filled their eyes, and they
- 5:28Speaker 2: hid themselves in Jericho. They sent word to David and
- 5:32Speaker 2: told him what happened. David did not send men to
- 5:35Speaker 2: get them. He went himself. David rode to his men
- 5:39Speaker 2: swiftly as a father would to his hurting children. David
- 5:43Speaker 2: found them hiding in Jericho and comforted them. Remain here
- 5:47Speaker 2: until your beards grow back. Here are supplies and new robes.
- 5:52Speaker 2: So David left them and relieved them of their duties
- 5:55Speaker 2: until they recovered their dignity. He mounted his horse and
- 5:58Speaker 2: left the area. He rode fast and aggressively. He looked
- 6:02Speaker 2: forward with fury in his eyes. David would not forgive
- 6:06Speaker 2: the humiliation of his servants. Unlike Hanan, David was a
- 6:10Speaker 2: king with actual power. Hanan would soon learn this for himself.
- 6:16Speaker 2: The Ammonites heard that David was outraged by Hanan's disrespect.
- 6:20Speaker 2: They wanted to attack him before he attacked them, so
- 6:24Speaker 2: they hired 20,000 Syrian mercenaries to join their army. They
- 6:28Speaker 2: also allied with a neighboring city to gain an extra
- 6:31Speaker 2: 13,000 men. Soon, a vast army prepared themselves for David's retaliation. Unperturbed,
- 6:39Speaker 2: David sent Joab, his mighty men, and a portion of
- 6:43Speaker 2: his army to face them. Joab scooped out the field
- 6:47Speaker 2: and saw that the Ammonites and the Syrians split up
- 6:50Speaker 2: to ambush them on both ends. Joab and the mighty
- 6:53Speaker 2: men decided to march towards the Syrians, while the army
- 6:57Speaker 2: of Israel took on the Ammonites. Joab shouted to his
- 7:01Speaker 2: men with his spear in the air and said, Protect
- 7:04Speaker 2: one another. If one side proves to be too strong,
- 7:08Speaker 2: we will come to each other's aid. Joab looked to
- 7:12Speaker 2: the battlefield. He longed for battle, craved it. But the
- 7:16Speaker 2: armies were large and his men were few. Be strong
- 7:20Speaker 2: and courageous, Joab yelled again, for you are the city
- 7:24Speaker 2: of God. A roar followed Joab's words, and the men
- 7:28Speaker 2: of Israel descended upon the Syrians and Ammonites. Joab and
- 7:33Speaker 2: the mighty men reached the Syrians first. Their speed caught
- 7:37Speaker 2: the Syrians completely off guard. Never had they seen men
- 7:41Speaker 2: fight with such unity. Months of training with David in
- 7:45Speaker 2: the wilderness honed them in. They battled as a single unit,
- 7:50Speaker 2: as if they were one body. They overwhelmed the Syrians
- 7:53Speaker 2: within minutes. and they began to flee. The Ammonites saw
- 7:58Speaker 2: their mercenaries flee and became scared. They fled from the
- 8:02Speaker 2: battle and hid behind their city gates. Joab returned with
- 8:06Speaker 2: the soldiers and awaited orders from David for the next move.
- 8:11Speaker 2: The Syrians threw their weapons on the floor in frustration.
- 8:15Speaker 2: They had been caught completely off guard. Though they were
- 8:18Speaker 2: hired hands, they would not allow themselves to be beaten
- 8:21Speaker 2: and humiliated by Israel. They rallied and gathered their allies
- 8:25Speaker 2: from beyond the Euphrates. Shobak, their commander, led them to
- 8:29Speaker 2: Helam and awaited David for battle. Shobak stood taller than
- 8:34Speaker 2: all the other men under his command. He was fierce
- 8:37Speaker 2: and a brilliant swordsman and tactician. The Syrians feared him
- 8:42Speaker 2: and followed him into battle. This time David did not
- 8:46Speaker 2: send Joab and his men. David rode out with his
- 8:49Speaker 2: army behind him to Helam. Thousands of Syrian horsemen and
- 8:53Speaker 2: soldiers stood before David on the opposite end of the field.
- 8:57Speaker 2: David drew his sword and, without saying a word, ran
- 9:01Speaker 2: headfirst into battle. The men of Israel stood in awe
- 9:04Speaker 2: of their king. He ran like a lion, shortening the
- 9:08Speaker 2: gap between him and his prey. The Syrian chariots rushed
- 9:12Speaker 2: in first. For a moment, it seemed as though it
- 9:15Speaker 2: was David running towards a sea of chariots on his own.
- 9:19Speaker 2: His men followed behind him, inspired by their warrior king.
- 9:23Speaker 2: David's fighting was like poetry. His sword slashed the legs
- 9:27Speaker 2: of horses, sending the horsemen flying through the air. His
- 9:31Speaker 2: shield absorbed every blow, and his blade returned with twice
- 9:35Speaker 2: the force. David's sword seemed to dance in his hand
- 9:39Speaker 2: as he fought his way through the Syrian lines. Shobak
- 9:43Speaker 2: had David in his line of vision. He ran towards David,
- 9:47Speaker 2: toppling other soldiers on his way. David barely saw Shobak
- 9:51Speaker 2: at the corner of his eye before he struck a
- 9:53Speaker 2: blow to his side with his shield. David flew into
- 9:56Speaker 2: the air and landed on his back. Shobak did not
- 10:00Speaker 2: stop and ran toward David with his sword.
- 10:02Speaker 3: In the air.
- 10:04Speaker 2: David dodged the second attack and swiped Shobak's calf. The
- 10:08Speaker 2: two fought ferociously, yet Shobak's strength was no match for
- 10:12Speaker 2: David's skill. David allowed Shobak to come close, grabbed the
- 10:17Speaker 2: hilt of his sword, and drove his blade into Shobak's side.
- 10:22Speaker 2: He stumbled back, holding his stomach. Frightened that David might
- 10:26Speaker 2: slay him where he stood, Shobak ran away. Bleeding from
- 10:30Speaker 2: his stomach, Shobak ran through the battle looking for safety.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Growing faint, he fell to his knees and bled out
- 10:39Speaker 2: on the battlefield. The battle was won. David and his
- 10:43Speaker 2: men killed 700 chariots and 40,000 horsemen. David raised his
- 10:50Speaker 2: spear into the air and roared a mighty cry of
- 10:53Speaker 2: victory with the blood of his enemy laced on his
- 10:56Speaker 2: face and clothes. The men of Israel shouted and chanted
- 11:00Speaker 2: to God. The kings of the east trembled in fear
- 11:03Speaker 2: of David and made peace with Israel. David used his
- 11:07Speaker 2: sword to make a statement, but he would go no
- 11:10Speaker 2: further than protecting his people. David was not a conqueror
- 11:14Speaker 2: and had no interest in enslaving other kingdoms. He wanted
- 11:18Speaker 2: peace and welcomed any kingdom that desired the same. David's
- 11:23Speaker 2: bravery became renowned in all the land. Yet even the
- 11:26Speaker 2: bravest of kings can be undone by the smallest of temptations.
- 11:32Speaker 2: A lesson David would soon learn.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Today's passage begins with the death of the Ammonite king.
- 11:43Speaker 3: His son, Hanun, was his successor. And when David heard
- 11:47Speaker 3: of the death of the man who had once been
- 11:49Speaker 3: kind to him when he was in exile, he wanted
- 11:51Speaker 3: to show his respect and return the kindness. So he
- 11:55Speaker 3: sent some of his men on a peaceful mission into
- 11:57Speaker 3: the land of the Ammonites, historically enemies of Israel. Though
- 12:02Speaker 3: he was a very powerful king with a great army,
- 12:04Speaker 3: David wanted to rule with peace whenever possible. But as
- 12:08Speaker 3: his men entered the palace of Hanun, there they were
- 12:11Speaker 3: met with distrust and paranoia. Now, for sure, a certain
- 12:15Speaker 3: amount of trepidation on the part of the Ammonite king
- 12:17Speaker 3: would have been understandable. But rather than give the men
- 12:20Speaker 3: a chance to speak, he had them seized immediately. Their
- 12:24Speaker 3: beards were shaved, an act of humiliation in itself in
- 12:28Speaker 3: those days, and their robes were cut off at the waist,
- 12:30Speaker 3: exposing them to ridicule as they were cast into the streets.
- 12:34Speaker 3: The men fled in embarrassment and hid in Jericho. 2
- 12:38Speaker 3: Samuel 10.5 tells us how David reacted. We read, When
- 12:43Speaker 3: it was told to David, he sent to meet them,
- 12:46Speaker 3: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said,
- 12:50Speaker 3: Remain in Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return. Now,
- 12:55Speaker 3: don't miss the significance of this passage. First, it tells
- 12:59Speaker 3: us that David was primarily concerned with his men. As
- 13:02Speaker 3: a king, he could have focused first on the disrespect
- 13:05Speaker 3: shown to him by Hanun. He could have immediately departed
- 13:09Speaker 3: to attack the Ammonites to punish them for their mockery.
- 13:12Speaker 3: But he went first to his men to care for
- 13:15Speaker 3: their needs and comfort them. Secondly, David went to them himself.
- 13:20Speaker 3: A great leader is never above serving those who follow him.
- 13:23Speaker 3: Jesus gave us the best example of this as he
- 13:27Speaker 3: washed his own disciples' feet. David surely could have sent
- 13:31Speaker 3: someone else to reach his men, but he went to
- 13:34Speaker 3: see them himself. So with the first priority handled, David
- 13:39Speaker 3: then turned to the Ammonites for their offense could not
- 13:41Speaker 3: be unanswered. David gathered his men with his faithful commander
- 13:45Speaker 3: Joab in charge. Joab wisely was careful in his plan
- 13:49Speaker 3: of attack. He'd learned from David, a skillful and wise
- 13:52Speaker 3: military leader. And rather than rush into the war, Joab
- 13:56Speaker 3: surveyed the battlefield. He saw there were two fronts on
- 14:00Speaker 3: which to fight. So he prepared his men and they
- 14:02Speaker 3: resolved to fight as one unit, supporting each other where
- 14:05Speaker 3: any weakness arose. Joab's men were strong and ready for battle,
- 14:09Speaker 3: and the enemy was quickly defeated, and the Syrian mercenaries
- 14:13Speaker 3: driven off. When the Syrians realized they were in a
- 14:17Speaker 3: large fight, they gathered their allies, and this time David
- 14:20Speaker 3: himself led the Israelite army into battle. God, as he
- 14:24Speaker 3: had been doing since David rose to the throne, gave
- 14:27Speaker 3: David a convincing victory, and the Syrians were defeated and
- 14:31Speaker 3: driven away. And rather than use this as an opportunity
- 14:34Speaker 3: to increase his territory and kill his enemies, David made
- 14:38Speaker 3: peace with the Syrians and their allies, who knew now
- 14:41Speaker 3: that David and God's people were not to be abused.
- 14:44Speaker 3: But as David's fame and power grew, a complacency began
- 14:48Speaker 3: to creep in, and with it, temptation was just around
- 14:51Speaker 3: the corner. We'll discover the tragic consequences of that in
- 14:55Speaker 3: our next reading. Dear God, we thank you for today's
- 14:58Speaker 3: passage on servant leadership. Help us always be willing to
- 15:03Speaker 3: serve those around us and to help those that we
- 15:06Speaker 3: lead and love. May we show kindness even to our
- 15:09Speaker 3: enemies as Jesus taught us. And it is in his
- 15:12Speaker 3: name that we pray.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Amen.
