- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day. Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Welcome to Not So Fast.
- 0:19Speaker 4: I'm Andrew Perloff.
- 0:19Speaker 3: He's Paul Paps. Paul, there was no football on last night.
- 0:24Speaker 3: The first Tuesday of the regular season can be really tough.
- 0:26Speaker 5: Yeah, six straight days of NFL or college football. There
- 0:29Speaker 5: was no MAAC football on last night. So we pivoted.
- 0:32Speaker 5: We pivoted. You and I were texting each other. Let's
- 0:34Speaker 5: catch up on our baseball and... Congratulations to the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 0:38Speaker 5: They're very likable and lovable Milwaukee Brewers. They win the
- 0:40Speaker 5: division again. They celebrate. The Brewers, weirdly, again, have the
- 0:44Speaker 5: best record in baseball, even though they spend like half
- 0:47Speaker 5: what the Dodgers do.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Now, I know there's a feel-good element to the Brewers.
- 0:50Speaker 3: I'm not going to get fooled again. I pulled some
- 0:53Speaker 3: of our balls. They've been in the playoffs seven times
- 0:55Speaker 3: since 2018, and they've won two series. They do not
- 1:01Speaker 3: win once they get into the postseason.
- 1:04Speaker 5: If you don't have a dog in the fight, the
- 1:06Speaker 5: Brewers are a very root-for-able team. That's an actual phrase.
- 1:09Speaker 5: Great unis. Mizorowski will get to him. They've been close.
- 1:14Speaker 5: They could topple the all-powerful Dodgers, possibly.
- 1:17Speaker 3: I hear what you're saying, but I've been behind the
- 1:19Speaker 3: Brewers for about three decades, and they've never delivered for me.
- 1:22Speaker 5: That 82 Brewers team, what a great team they had.
- 1:25Speaker 5: They almost won the World Series. Those are prime Brewer days.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Are you kidding me? Robin Yount? You want to talk
- 1:30Speaker 3: about Cecil Cooper?
- 1:31Speaker 5: Paulie Molitor?
- 1:32Speaker 4: Ben Ogilvie? We could go on and on.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Now they're kind of a pitching team, which is a
- 1:35Speaker 3: little weird.
- 1:36Speaker 5: Good squad, good thing. But the other great thing about baseball,
- 1:39Speaker 5: with only two weeks left, technically all the teams alive
- 1:42Speaker 5: for the playoffs— Rays, Yanks are in. Red Sox, Orioles,
- 1:47Speaker 5: White Sox, Guardians, Tigers is still eligible. Astros, Rangers, Braves, Phillies, Cubs, Padres, D-backs.
- 1:55Speaker 5: The Padres just won like seven in a row. But
- 1:57Speaker 5: there's so many teams alive. It's just good for the sport.
- 2:00Speaker 5: Going back a generation ago before the wild card, most
- 2:03Speaker 5: teams were out of it at this juncture.
- 2:04Speaker 3: But it's kind of sad to see teams that are
- 2:06Speaker 3: 75 and 76 on this graphic.
- 2:08Speaker 4: Maybe there's too many teams involved. Also, Dan brought up
- 2:10Speaker 4: a great point.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Is it really all about the Dodgers and the entire
- 2:15Speaker 3: league trying to catch up with them? Once the postseason starts,
- 2:17Speaker 3: is L.A.
- 2:18Speaker 4: Going to win it all easily?
- 2:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Or can any of these teams that we're looking at
- 2:21Speaker 3: now make some noise?
- 2:22Speaker 5: Well, DP talked about that earlier in the Dan Patrick show,
- 2:24Speaker 5: and he said that the Dodgers, they're going to be
- 2:26Speaker 5: in it every year, but they don't necessarily are going
- 2:28Speaker 5: to win it every year. They're just eligible. Like a
- 2:30Speaker 5: White Sox, they get in the playoffs once every 10
- 2:32Speaker 5: years at best. But the Dodgers came this close, literally
- 2:36Speaker 5: this close from losing it last year to the Blue Jays.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I look at that pitching staff with Scooble and Yamamoto,
- 2:42Speaker 3: and you go on and on. They seem unbeatable on paper.
- 2:45Speaker 5: And Yamamoto pitches complete games in the postseason.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. All right. Well, let's talk some football as well.
- 2:51Speaker 3: We're one week in, and we try not to overreact,
- 2:53Speaker 3: but we're ready to overreact. Let's talk about, Paul, the
- 2:57Speaker 3: one contender in the AFC that impressed you the most.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Can I go first?
- 3:00Speaker 5: Yeah, go ahead.
- 3:01Speaker 6: Okay.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Okay.
- 3:02Speaker 3: I know there are a lot of big games. I
- 3:03Speaker 3: know the Bills won a huge game over the Texans.
- 3:06Speaker 3: I know the Chiefs look dominant over the Broncos, who
- 3:09Speaker 3: I have in the Super Bowl. But to me, the
- 3:11Speaker 3: one team that blew me away was Baltimore. They could
- 3:14Speaker 3: beat you in every possible way. Lamar Jackson running, throwing.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Derrick Henry looks like he's 25, not 32. Zay Flowers,
- 3:22Speaker 3: I know he got hurt a little bit. He's dominant
- 3:24Speaker 3: in a wide receiver. Here's one number to throw at you.
- 3:27Speaker 3: When they did a play action with Lamar under center...
- 3:29Speaker 3: Lamar was 7 of 8 for 128 yards. Love that.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Because if you're a defense, what do you do, Paul?
- 3:36Speaker 3: You have to worry about Derrick Henry, but you have
- 3:38Speaker 3: to worry about Lamar both running and throwing the ball.
- 3:41Speaker 4: It's an impossible situation, and the defense looked great as well.
- 3:44Speaker 5: But I think you're debunking yourself because you always said
- 3:47Speaker 5: you love the Ravens in the regular season, not the postseason.
- 3:50Speaker 3: I know.
- 3:50Speaker 4: I said I wouldn't be fooled by the Brewers.
- 3:53Speaker 3: I'm getting fooled by the Ravens.
- 3:54Speaker 5: Did you have any other contenders in the AFC?
- 3:56Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 3:57Speaker 3: You know, I do like the Chiefs. I like the Bills,
- 3:59Speaker 3: the favorites. It feels like we're sort of in a
- 4:01Speaker 3: flashback to two years ago or three years ago when
- 4:03Speaker 3: those were the teams that were always there. To me,
- 4:06Speaker 3: it's those three are at the top. And by the way,
- 4:08Speaker 3: can I say the fact that Mike McDonald won in
- 4:10Speaker 3: Seattle makes me think Jesse Minter can win in Baltimore
- 4:12Speaker 3: and new offensive coordinator Declan Doyle. Looks really good. What
- 4:16Speaker 3: a great start. So some new blood in the coaching
- 4:19Speaker 3: side really gets me into Baltimore.
- 4:21Speaker 4: Maybe that's why they're different in the postseason.
- 4:23Speaker 5: You know, my AFC team or AFC contender that impressed
- 4:25Speaker 5: me the most, I'm not going to go with the
- 4:27Speaker 5: Ravens because they did what I kind of expected them
- 4:29Speaker 5: to do. That's what they do in the regular season.
- 4:31Speaker 5: I want to go with the Jaguars, but I can't
- 4:33Speaker 5: because they did it against the Browns. But it's weird
- 4:36Speaker 5: because I feel bad not giving the Jaguars their flowers.
- 4:39Speaker 5: Very good season, not a good postseason last year. And
- 4:41Speaker 5: it's weird because they have star power. Trevor Lawrence had
- 4:45Speaker 5: star power. Does he still have it? Still got the hair.
- 4:48Speaker 5: Travis Hunter not playing both ways, that takes a little
- 4:51Speaker 5: of his star power away. But I'm not going with
- 4:53Speaker 5: the Jaguars because they did it against the Browns. I've
- 4:55Speaker 5: got to see it for a few more weeks. I
- 4:57Speaker 5: am going with the Chiefs for a couple reasons. I
- 5:00Speaker 5: love the addition of Ken Walker. We call him Ken
- 5:02Speaker 5: Walker here on Not So Fast. And it gives him
- 5:04Speaker 5: such an element. Mahomes ran that play in the other day,
- 5:06Speaker 5: and he looks great. Does he look tentative at times,
- 5:11Speaker 5: maybe not ready to cut it loose downfield. I think
- 5:13Speaker 5: it's about his cast, not his ability to throw downfield.
- 5:17Speaker 5: Xavier Worthy is supposed to be a deep threat. I'm
- 5:19Speaker 5: still waiting. I like him when he gets the ball
- 5:21Speaker 5: in the running game sometimes on those jet sweeps. My
- 5:23Speaker 5: only concern about the Chiefs, not the defense, not the
- 5:26Speaker 5: running game, not Mahomes, do they have an A-level receiver
- 5:30Speaker 5: for the postseason? And I don't think they do.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Rasheed Rice is coming off a knee injury. You could
- 5:35Speaker 3: tell he was a little slower. He could be an
- 5:36Speaker 3: A-level receiver. Second half of the season, he's healthy. Travis
- 5:40Speaker 3: Kelsey also looked really good.
- 5:42Speaker 4: I don't want to get ahead of myself.
- 5:43Speaker 5: Good for a guy of his age and his speed.
- 5:47Speaker 4: I thought he looked just good, good. And you've seen
- 5:49Speaker 4: Mahomes win with not great receivers in the past. I
- 5:52Speaker 4: would not knock them off for that reason.
- 5:53Speaker 5: Okay, I know we have to get to NFC, but
- 5:54Speaker 5: I'm going to call for a 20 here. Let me
- 5:56Speaker 5: suggest this to you. What if the Chiefs around week
- 5:59Speaker 5: seven realize we have a team, clearly they have a
- 6:02Speaker 5: team that can compete for a title. They do every year.
- 6:04Speaker 5: Let's hit the trademark and get the best wide receiver possible.
- 6:06Speaker 5: And let me throw this scenario at you. The Vikings
- 6:09Speaker 5: had a good week one. Probably won't work out that well.
- 6:12Speaker 5: Let's say the Vikings are three and five after eight games.
- 6:16Speaker 5: Do the Vikings put Justin Jefferson on the market. You're
- 6:19Speaker 5: spending a lot of money. You can get out all
- 6:21Speaker 5: your books and reset your franchise next year at the
- 6:23Speaker 5: wide receiver and quarterback position. And the Chiefs step up
- 6:26Speaker 5: and trade whatever. You'll give whatever for Justin Jefferson.
- 6:29Speaker 4: This seems like something that you say in a bar
- 6:31Speaker 4: to a buddy.
- 6:32Speaker 5: This does seem sports radio-ish.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Yeah, or not even sports radio. Like, you know, if
- 6:36Speaker 3: I was a GM, I'd trade for Justin Jefferson. I'm
- 6:37Speaker 3: sure the Vikings have gotten calls about him in the
- 6:39Speaker 3: past and said no. The Vikings cannot let him go,
- 6:42Speaker 3: no matter what. Because eventually they're going to get their quarterback,
- 6:45Speaker 3: and who's the guy the Vikings need?
- 6:46Speaker 4: The Chiefs have a quarterback. They don't need Justin Jefferson
- 6:49Speaker 4: to make a quarterback great.
- 6:50Speaker 3: The Vikings need that.
- 6:51Speaker 5: All right, let's get to the NFC. The NFC contender
- 6:54Speaker 5: that impressed you the most, Pearl, I'll let you go
- 6:56Speaker 5: first again.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Okay, this might be a little against the grain because
- 6:59Speaker 3: it actually didn't look that great, but the Seattle Seahawks
- 7:02Speaker 3: really impressed me because they won with Sam Darnold going
- 7:04Speaker 3: down early over the Patriots. Their defense looked even more
- 7:08Speaker 3: dominant than last season, and they had some injuries on defense.
- 7:11Speaker 3: They barely lost anyone. They lost Reek Woolen, but they're
- 7:14Speaker 3: fine without him. That defense, to me, could be, first
- 7:18Speaker 3: of all, it's unheralded, but the most impressive unit around
- 7:21Speaker 3: the NFL overall. They don't need great quarterback play. And
- 7:24Speaker 3: they have JSN and wide receiver. They don't need Kenneth Walker. Sorry,
- 7:27Speaker 3: Ken Walker.
- 7:28Speaker 4: They have, you know, they have Jadarian Price, and they
- 7:31Speaker 4: can fill in running backs.
- 7:33Speaker 3: I don't see a major flaw with the Seahawks, even
- 7:35Speaker 3: if Sam Darnold needs a couple weeks out.
- 7:37Speaker 5: It's like Sam Darnold can't get credit for anything. He
- 7:39Speaker 5: wins the Super Bowl, or he was part of the
- 7:40Speaker 5: Super Bowl winning team. His team outscored their opponents by
- 7:43Speaker 5: 191 points last year. But he's going to miss a
- 7:45Speaker 5: couple weeks, and it's not even a lead story in sports.
- 7:48Speaker 5: The defending Super Bowl champs quarterback, is out for a
- 7:51Speaker 5: few weeks, which we still don't know whether it's his
- 7:53Speaker 5: hip or his glute. I checked the Seattle Seahawks website.
- 7:56Speaker 5: They said it is not his hip. He does not
- 7:58Speaker 5: have a hip joint injury. It is his glute, which
- 8:00Speaker 5: means your butt.
- 8:01Speaker 4: That does mean your butt.
- 8:03Speaker 3: I also saw he could come back week three if
- 8:05Speaker 3: they really need him to, but I don't think they
- 8:07Speaker 3: need him to.
- 8:07Speaker 4: If you're a quarterback for the Seahawks, just don't throw interceptions.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Your defense will win the game.
- 8:12Speaker 5: You won the Super Bowl last year. My NFC contender
- 8:14Speaker 5: that impressed the most I would like to say the
- 8:16Speaker 5: Bears by their offense, but their defense is not good.
- 8:19Speaker 5: And it wasn't good last year, but it's opportunistic. I
- 8:21Speaker 5: think their defense is actually worse than last year. And
- 8:24Speaker 5: they made all those plays on defense. Can't go with
- 8:26Speaker 5: the Bears. And I would like to go with the
- 8:28Speaker 5: New York Giants, but I think it was a really
- 8:30Speaker 5: good first week. It might be a really nice first
- 8:32Speaker 5: month for the Giants, but I don't look at them
- 8:34Speaker 5: as contender or even contender-ish. I think they're going to
- 8:36Speaker 5: have an improved season. And I'm going to go with...
- 8:40Speaker 5: The 49ers begrudgingly. I like the way the 49ers adjust
- 8:44Speaker 5: with injuries because they're used to being injured. And that
- 8:46Speaker 5: game against the Rams, they spanked them. And I don't
- 8:48Speaker 5: want to hear about jet lag and no Aaron Donald.
- 8:52Speaker 5: If you're the favorite to win the Super Bowl and
- 8:54Speaker 5: you lay an egg, the other team caused you to
- 8:56Speaker 5: lay the egg. Boy, that sunshine is gorgeous on those uniforms.
- 9:00Speaker 5: I know it's all health dependent with Christian McCaffrey, with
- 9:03Speaker 5: Nick Bosa and all those guys. But right now, the
- 9:06Speaker 5: 49ers are a little dangerous, maybe even a lot dangerous.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Are we forgetting about a massive electrical substation?
- 9:11Speaker 4: I know it's an overdone joke.
- 9:13Speaker 5: I am pro substation now. I want my team to
- 9:15Speaker 5: build a substation and soak in all those good rays
- 9:17Speaker 5: that are helping the 49ers be good.
- 9:19Speaker 4: Okay, they look great in week one.
- 9:21Speaker 3: If that team is out there for 18 weeks, 17 weeks, yes,
- 9:24Speaker 3: they're definitely a contender. And I consider them as well.
- 9:27Speaker 3: But come on, Paul. They're all older. I mean, Trent
- 9:30Speaker 3: Williams looks like the best tackle. He's almost 40. Kittle
- 9:34Speaker 3: is 32. Bosa looked great coming off an injury. But
- 9:37Speaker 3: there's a long season ahead.
- 9:39Speaker 5: I agree with you. But why do we think they're
- 9:40Speaker 5: always going to be injured? I think we expect them
- 9:42Speaker 5: to be injured. And what if this is the year?
- 9:44Speaker 5: And McCaffrey stays healthy and splits carries. We're going to
- 9:46Speaker 5: talk about that. Bosa stays healthy. Ayuk is off the roster,
- 9:49Speaker 5: which I think is a great thing. That guy was
- 9:51Speaker 5: a mess.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Totally agree.
- 9:53Speaker 5: I think that the Niners, with the lack of expectations,
- 9:56Speaker 5: could sneak up some people like they did in Australia.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:59Speaker 4: Kyle Shanahan, great coach as well.
- 10:01Speaker 3: All right, coming up next, we may have a surprise
- 10:03Speaker 3: number one pick in the NFL draft. Love it. I'll
- 10:07Speaker 3: explain that next. Not so fast.
- 10:11Speaker 5: Back on Not So Fast, passing Perloff. Always the midday pick-me-up, Perloff.
- 10:15Speaker 5: Not just coffee. A little bingo. That is Pete Alonso. Big,
- 10:20Speaker 5: hulking player going yard against his old team, the Mets.
- 10:25Speaker 3: That has got to feel great.
- 10:27Speaker 2: 300.
- 10:27Speaker 4: Do it against the Mets. Oh, man.
- 10:29Speaker 5: Yeah, they let you go. They didn't give you the
- 10:31Speaker 5: big contract. That wasn't a bad flip. That was a
- 10:33Speaker 5: bad spike.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I would not want to be in the way
- 10:36Speaker 3: of a bad flip from that dude at all.
- 10:38Speaker 5: That was a fun night last night. More for Pete
- 10:40Speaker 5: Alonzo than for Mets fans, but they seemed to enjoy it.
- 10:42Speaker 5: We're going to talk more about that in a little
- 10:43Speaker 5: bit because DP, earlier on the Dan Patrick Show, was
- 10:46Speaker 5: pretty hot on the topic. More of the fan reaction
- 10:48Speaker 5: than Pete Alonzo's hit. It's time for warm takes here
- 10:51Speaker 5: on Not So Fast with Paxton Perloff. We hit the warm-ups,
- 10:53Speaker 5: you soak them in like hot butter, baby. Here we go.
- 10:56Speaker 5: I'm going to go first. Interesting week for Arch Manning
- 10:59Speaker 5: down at Texas. Saturday was fantastic. His signature game of
- 11:03Speaker 5: his career. And then for some reason, he lost the
- 11:06Speaker 5: press conference at home two days later. And I'm not
- 11:09Speaker 5: going to give him too much of a hall pass.
- 11:10Speaker 5: I don't think you should because he is a Manning.
- 11:13Speaker 5: He is not a college kid who's new to the spotlight.
- 11:15Speaker 5: He is the most prepared college kid of all time
- 11:18Speaker 5: for the spotlight. His uncles are media giants. They were
- 11:21Speaker 5: in the pros for years, for decades. And Arch Manning
- 11:24Speaker 5: had a big whiff at the press conference. I'm sure
- 11:26Speaker 5: you know the details. We don't have to go through them,
- 11:27Speaker 5: but you know if you have a phone and saw
- 11:29Speaker 5: social media. He had to issue an apology yesterday, and
- 11:32Speaker 5: it was warranted. And I'm going to give him a
- 11:34Speaker 5: borderline hall pass from the standpoint of, you know, you
- 11:36Speaker 5: look at his statement. My press conference yesterday, I made
- 11:39Speaker 5: an insensitive comment. He's talking about Holly Rowe and the
- 11:41Speaker 5: video with Sark. You guys know what happened. But this
- 11:44Speaker 5: guy's got to have more awareness there in the moment.
- 11:46Speaker 5: And his Madden awareness rating was really low on this one.
- 11:50Speaker 5: And it's like, you're Arch Manning, and you should know this.
- 11:53Speaker 5: And I think he does. It's like being a Kennedy
- 11:55Speaker 5: in politics, being a Manning in football. You go in famous,
- 11:58Speaker 5: you go in picked apart, and you go in as
- 12:01Speaker 5: people are going to talk about you, good, bad, or ugly.
- 12:03Speaker 5: You had the best football weekend of your career, and
- 12:06Speaker 5: you got really, really loose in the press conference. So
- 12:08Speaker 5: did the media there. But that's one where He better
- 12:11Speaker 5: learn that lesson because the second one won't get the
- 12:14Speaker 5: hall pass.
- 12:14Speaker 3: You know what my reaction was? I immediately thought, I'm like, oh,
- 12:17Speaker 3: why is everyone on social media jumping over a 22-year-old
- 12:20Speaker 3: kid over this?
- 12:21Speaker 4: It's just a social media clip. Then I saw the clip.
- 12:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:24Speaker 4: I had not seen it and it was really inappropriate.
- 12:26Speaker 5: Yeah, there's no excuse.
- 12:27Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, Art should have known on that one.
- 12:28Speaker 5: Yeah, and the 22-year-old kid thing, I think that works
- 12:31Speaker 5: a generation ago for the, not the NIL athletes. These
- 12:34Speaker 5: are professional athletes who happen to be in college. Some
- 12:37Speaker 5: aren't even going to college, so they should know every
- 12:39Speaker 5: bit of it and the If you look at when
- 12:41Speaker 5: he looked over to the Texas SID and did this one,
- 12:44Speaker 5: you knew it was a problem.
- 12:45Speaker 3: All right. I am actually going to stay in a
- 12:48Speaker 3: similar field, college football. Arch Manning might be the number
- 12:51Speaker 3: one overall pick still. Played well in the second half.
- 12:54Speaker 3: You got other quarterbacks who are playing well. Todd McShay
- 12:56Speaker 3: said this could be the greatest quarterback draft class of
- 12:58Speaker 3: all time. But it's falling apart a little bit. Dante
- 13:01Speaker 3: Moore does not look great for Oregon. Drew Messamaker looks awesome,
- 13:04Speaker 3: but he's throwing a lot of interceptions. Lenore Sellers has struggled.
- 13:07Speaker 3: A lot of guys have had either a slow start
- 13:09Speaker 3: or haven't played anyone yet. So we don't know. But
- 13:11Speaker 3: one guy that we know is a sure thing is
- 13:13Speaker 3: Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. He is so obviously,
- 13:17Speaker 3: to me, the best NFL prospect in college football.
- 13:21Speaker 4: It's not even close.
- 13:22Speaker 3: Quarterbacks might go ahead of him just because of the position.
- 13:25Speaker 3: But this is a once-in-a-generation wide receiver. Reminds me so
- 13:29Speaker 3: much of Calvin Johnson, maybe Julio Jones, maybe a little
- 13:32Speaker 3: Terrell Owens.
- 13:34Speaker 4: So, Paul, I have a question off this.
- 13:36Speaker 3: If you are the number one team in the draft
- 13:40Speaker 3: and you know you have a Hall of Fame wide
- 13:42Speaker 3: receiver sitting there, you know Calvin Johnson sitting there, do
- 13:45Speaker 3: you still take the quarterback anyway or do you go
- 13:48Speaker 3: with the sure thing wide receiver?
- 13:49Speaker 5: I think this is really interesting because it does feel
- 13:51Speaker 5: like there's very few questions about this guy, Jeremiah Smith.
- 13:54Speaker 5: Let's say you're the Tennessee Titans. Do you want to
- 13:56Speaker 5: go and get another quarterback again and start this process again?
- 13:59Speaker 5: What if you went with Jeremiah Smith, give him one
- 14:02Speaker 5: year under his belt on a rookie contract? You're probably
- 14:04Speaker 5: not going to be that good and you're in the
- 14:06Speaker 5: next draft. And that quarterback you bring in has Jeremiah
- 14:09Speaker 5: Smith to play with. And now you're putting together a
- 14:11Speaker 5: dream team as opposed to doing it the opposite direction.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Right. I think this is something Dan says. You want
- 14:16Speaker 3: to make sure that your team is ready for the
- 14:19Speaker 3: rookie quarterback. So you have talent around him. You have
- 14:21Speaker 3: an O-line. You have receivers. Otherwise, you're basically Cam Ward
- 14:25Speaker 3: in Tennessee two years ago.
- 14:26Speaker 5: You know the team I like? The Miami Dolphins. Somehow
- 14:28Speaker 5: the Dolphins have the number one pick. And you want
- 14:30Speaker 5: to really stick with Malik Willis and give him a
- 14:32Speaker 5: chance to expand and grow. And not making that much money,
- 14:35Speaker 5: Malik Willis, you give him Jeremiah Smith and build the
- 14:38Speaker 5: rest of your roster. That could be saucy.
- 14:39Speaker 3: Yeah, after week one, I think there are three teams
- 14:41Speaker 3: in the mix for number one. Tennessee might go Smith.
- 14:44Speaker 3: Miami might go Smith. But Cleveland has to go quarterback.
- 14:47Speaker 3: So I still think there's a chance. Jeremiah Smith is
- 14:50Speaker 3: so transcendent wide receiver that he bucks a trend, and
- 14:53Speaker 3: he passes all those other guys. And Arch, as you
- 14:56Speaker 3: point out, is he even ready to go pro? He
- 14:58Speaker 3: might even go back to Texas.
- 15:00Speaker 5: That would be something. If they don't win the title
- 15:02Speaker 5: or somehow miss the playoffs this year, I could see
- 15:04Speaker 5: another Arch season. I don't think he wants to start
- 15:06Speaker 5: one year.
- 15:07Speaker 2: No.
- 15:07Speaker 4: Well, it would be his second year, but Mannings usually stays.
- 15:11Speaker 3: C.J. Carr is another guy at Notre Dame. I'm not
- 15:13Speaker 3: sure he doesn't go back as well. Could clear a
- 15:15Speaker 3: path for Jeremiah Smith.
- 15:16Speaker 5: He just blew up the draft. All right, here's my
- 15:18Speaker 5: next warm take, and this is going back to the Brewers.
- 15:20Speaker 5: The Brewers have the pitcher Jake Mizorowski, the Miz as
- 15:23Speaker 5: they call him. He's about 6'7, about 210 pounds, and
- 15:26Speaker 5: he's thrown a pitch 105.5 miles per hour in his career.
- 15:30Speaker 5: If you watch his games, he hits 100 most of
- 15:33Speaker 5: the time. It's not even a big deal. I saw
- 15:35Speaker 5: a couple of 103s in the same at-bat yesterday. It's
- 15:38Speaker 5: really fascinating. It's a little bit like Randy Johnson because
- 15:41Speaker 5: he's got the presence, the big hands, and he's appointment programming.
- 15:44Speaker 5: But these days in baseball, there aren't that many appointment
- 15:48Speaker 5: programming pitchers because they don't get to go to innings 7, 8,
- 15:51Speaker 5: and 9. And I don't want to go back to
- 15:53Speaker 5: get off my lawn back in my day. Yamamoto for
- 15:55Speaker 5: the Dodgers is really interesting, and there's a few other pitchers.
- 15:58Speaker 5: Paul Skeens is appointment programming. and you've got to tune
- 16:00Speaker 5: into them. But I'm really curious about the future of
- 16:02Speaker 5: the pitching position. We're at 105 miles per hour. Mason
- 16:06Speaker 5: Miller of the Padres, he throws 105. It's not that
- 16:09Speaker 5: big of a deal to go over 102 anymore. And
- 16:11Speaker 5: how far can we go with this, the Miz? Can
- 16:14Speaker 5: the Miz throw 107 in two years? In 20 years,
- 16:16Speaker 5: are we talking about 110 miles an hour? Can this
- 16:19Speaker 5: go this far, or is there a cap on this,
- 16:21Speaker 5: and can hitters ever catch up? Bonus coverage, having two
- 16:24Speaker 5: sports people both named the Miz, the wrestler... And the pitcher,
- 16:28Speaker 5: does there have to be one Miz, Perloff, or can
- 16:29Speaker 5: we go with two Miz's or Miz-I?
- 16:31Speaker 3: I think pro wrestling is in a different category, so
- 16:33Speaker 3: you're fine with two Miz's. Can I throw a curveball
- 16:36Speaker 3: at you?
- 16:36Speaker 5: Oh, there you go.
- 16:38Speaker 4: I don't totally believe these numbers.
- 16:40Speaker 3: I think they've changed the way that they measure speed
- 16:42Speaker 3: because I've never seen anyone throw harder than Nolan Ryan. Right.
- 16:45Speaker 3: And all these guys are five to ten miles faster
- 16:48Speaker 3: than Nolan Ryan. Are you calling out the radar gun?
- 16:50Speaker 3: I've called it out many times before. It's not just
- 16:52Speaker 3: where they're measuring the ball. I mean, listen, it's fire,
- 16:55Speaker 3: and they all throw it like this. But I'm a
- 16:58Speaker 3: Nolan Ryan guy. Paul, I just can't accept that the
- 17:00Speaker 3: Miz throws it that much harder than my guy.
- 17:02Speaker 5: And Nolan Ryan could probably throw 85 today.
- 17:05Speaker 3: Okay, I'll go back to the NFL for my next
- 17:06Speaker 3: warm take. The NFC South started out 0-4. Not only that,
- 17:10Speaker 3: they let up over 35 points a game. All four franchises,
- 17:15Speaker 3: in my opinion, do not have a bright future. Out
- 17:18Speaker 3: of the last four years, twice the winner of the
- 17:20Speaker 3: division has had a losing record.
- 17:22Speaker 4: So can this go on for eternity? Or does the
- 17:24Speaker 4: NFL ever step in and say, you know what?
- 17:28Speaker 3: Maybe we should realign. And that sounds crazy because we've
- 17:30Speaker 3: had these same divisions for a long time now. What
- 17:33Speaker 3: if they expand overseas, Paul? Then they have to realign
- 17:37Speaker 3: at some point. They might go from 32 to 36,
- 17:39Speaker 3: have an all-overseas division, or they say, you know what?
- 17:43Speaker 3: Let's add in London in the NFC East. Then they
- 17:46Speaker 3: mix it up.
- 17:47Speaker 4: I'll be honest. I look at the ownership groups of
- 17:49Speaker 4: all four teams. I'm looking at the quarterback situation.
- 17:51Speaker 5: So you're saying this is a bigger trend?
- 17:53Speaker 3: I think the NFC South is sunk because the Bucs
- 17:56Speaker 3: just re-signed Baker Mayfield. He's not getting into the Super Bowl.
- 17:58Speaker 3: The Panthers are going nowhere with Bryce Young. They just
- 18:01Speaker 3: let up 59 points. Atlanta is one of the biggest
- 18:04Speaker 3: messes in the entire NFL. The one quarterback who I'm
- 18:07Speaker 3: excited about is Tyler Shuck.
- 18:08Speaker 5: And that's barely excited.
- 18:09Speaker 3: Barely excited.
- 18:10Speaker 4: And he's not that young.
- 18:11Speaker 3: I know he's in his second year, but he's an
- 18:12Speaker 3: older guy as well. I just don't see where the
- 18:15Speaker 3: Super Bowl team is here. What are we doing in
- 18:16Speaker 3: the NFC South? Are you going to be able to
- 18:18Speaker 3: win it at 9-8, 8-9 for the next 10 years?
- 18:21Speaker 5: Yeah, I like what you're saying here. How about this
- 18:23Speaker 5: as a solution? If you don't have a winning record,
- 18:25Speaker 5: you cannot make the playoffs. Does that fix the problem? Now,
- 18:29Speaker 5: they're all 0-1 right now. All the teams in the
- 18:31Speaker 5: division are 0-1 right now. It wouldn't be a surprise
- 18:34Speaker 5: if one of them finishes below. 500 and makes the playoffs.
- 18:36Speaker 5: It's happened before. An easy rule, and I think football
- 18:40Speaker 5: fans would get behind this. If you're under. 500 or
- 18:42Speaker 5: you're one game under. 500, you can't make the playoffs.
- 18:45Speaker 3: And then the next team in another division gets that spot.
- 18:47Speaker 3: A new wild card spins. I like it.
- 18:50Speaker 4: And, you know, the NFL loves to change their rules.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Why not? Let's go.
- 18:52Speaker 5: Roger Goodell is watching. I'm sure he loves it.
- 18:54Speaker 3: Hey, Roger.
- 18:55Speaker 5: All right, let's play a little game here. This is
- 18:57Speaker 5: a fun one I like to call blip or trend.
- 18:59Speaker 5: Is this something that's just happening for a couple days,
- 19:02Speaker 5: or is it more of a trend? Perloff, you don't
- 19:03Speaker 5: know what's coming.
- 19:04Speaker 3: All right.
- 19:04Speaker 5: Here we go. Christian McCaffrey splitting touches with rookie Kalen Black,
- 19:08Speaker 5: the rookie out of Indiana that I like a lot.
- 19:10Speaker 5: Blip or trend for your 49ers?
- 19:12Speaker 3: Okay, if the Niners are smart, this is a definite trend.
- 19:15Speaker 3: And I think it is a trend because they know
- 19:17Speaker 3: Christian McCaffrey gets too many touches, he wears out. Black
- 19:21Speaker 3: looked awesome. Now, here's what I'm worried about. Is it
- 19:24Speaker 3: going to be a close game? They were up on
- 19:26Speaker 3: the ramps. close divisional game. Are they just going to
- 19:28Speaker 3: keep on riding McCaffrey and forget about Black?
- 19:31Speaker 4: I hope not.
- 19:31Speaker 3: I say Trent.
- 19:32Speaker 5: Well, I think this sets it up. And we talked
- 19:33Speaker 5: about this in week one. We went back to the draft.
- 19:35Speaker 5: You and I talked about how much we liked Kalen Black.
- 19:38Speaker 5: And we said, this is perfect. Christian McCaffrey's got a
- 19:40Speaker 5: lot of mileage going back to college. A ton of mileage.
- 19:43Speaker 5: And if you can put him in position to be
- 19:44Speaker 5: ready for December, January, February, it's a great strategy.
- 19:47Speaker 3: All right.
- 19:48Speaker 5: Bengals becoming a Turner machine on defense. Blip or trend?
- 19:52Speaker 2: Wow.
- 19:53Speaker 4: To me, that's a blip.
- 19:55Speaker 3: If you watch some of the turnovers, it's because Baker
- 19:56Speaker 3: Mayfield was running wild and forgot to hold on to
- 19:59Speaker 3: the ball.
- 19:59Speaker 5: You don't face him every week.
- 20:01Speaker 3: That was completely about Baker Mayfield got behind to Joe
- 20:04Speaker 3: Burrow and just like, I've got to make every play possible.
- 20:07Speaker 3: I am still a little worried about the Bengals' defense.
- 20:11Speaker 3: I know Dexter Lawrence is awesome. but the Bucs in
- 20:13Speaker 3: the second half of that game looked like the better team, actually.
- 20:16Speaker 3: So Cincinnati, I don't think they're that different. I know
- 20:18Speaker 3: that they had a convincing week one win, which they
- 20:20Speaker 3: never do, but I still worry about the defense.
- 20:22Speaker 5: Joe Burrow is so bummed that you didn't say this
- 20:24Speaker 5: is a trend, because Joe Burrow just needs a little defense,
- 20:26Speaker 5: not even a lot of defense.
- 20:27Speaker 3: Yeah, did you see when the game got close at
- 20:29Speaker 3: the end, all of a sudden the Bucs started moving
- 20:30Speaker 3: the ball?
- 20:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:31Speaker 4: I think it's way too early to say since he
- 20:33Speaker 4: fixed his defense.
- 20:33Speaker 5: All right, next up for blip or trend, Drake May,
- 20:36Speaker 5: the quarterback of the Patriots, becoming a turnover-happy machine. Wow,
- 20:39Speaker 5: this is a pejorative.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Turnover-happy?
- 20:42Speaker 3: Machine, after one week against the Seahawks, the Super Bowl
- 20:45Speaker 3: winning defense.
- 20:45Speaker 5: That's why it's flipper trend, Perloff.
- 20:47Speaker 3: Drake May was pressing, obviously, in the fourth quarter against Seattle.
- 20:51Speaker 3: Three turnovers, they're all late. Drake May does have this
- 20:54Speaker 3: thing where he thinks he can make any play. I
- 20:55Speaker 3: think he did read some headlines.
- 20:57Speaker 5: He's a loaf of bread guy. He likes to hold
- 20:59Speaker 5: the ball a little loose in the pocket whilst running.
- 21:01Speaker 5: He had a bunch of fumbles last year. that his
- 21:03Speaker 5: own team recovered, I looked this up, so he doesn't
- 21:05Speaker 5: get the ding for fumbling.
- 21:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I would say blip, though, because I think he
- 21:08Speaker 4: has a good coaching staff.
- 21:09Speaker 3: Mike Frabel, Josh McDaniels are going to say, listen, Drake,
- 21:12Speaker 3: you're awesome, but don't think you're Patrick Mahomes, because you're not.
- 21:15Speaker 3: He's got to contain himself, play more disciplined, and he's
- 21:18Speaker 3: not playing Seattle every week.
- 21:19Speaker 5: All right, last one for the popular game, blip or trend.
- 21:21Speaker 5: You can play at home. Packers unable to close out games,
- 21:24Speaker 5: blip or trend. I'd like to go first on this one.
- 21:26Speaker 3: Please.
- 21:27Speaker 5: This has become a trend, and Packers fans are not happy.
- 21:29Speaker 5: It goes back to the last two months of last season.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 21:31Speaker 5: The Packers limped to the finish in games they could
- 21:33Speaker 5: have won. A couple against the Bears, they could have won.
- 21:36Speaker 3: Yeah, the playoff game against the Bears.
- 21:37Speaker 5: And the start of this season, for Carson Wentz to
- 21:40Speaker 5: do it against you, it's getting really hot up in
- 21:42Speaker 5: Green Bay, and it doesn't usually get hot in Green Bay.
- 21:45Speaker 5: The fans are really upset.
- 21:46Speaker 3: You know, it seems like a bigger problem to me.
- 21:48Speaker 3: Their offensive line was not great on Sunday.
- 21:50Speaker 5: Jordan Love did his job.
- 21:51Speaker 4: Yeah, and then he started getting hit.
- 21:54Speaker 3: And I think the Packers are too much of a,
- 21:56Speaker 3: we're going to have great plays called in the first half.
- 21:59Speaker 3: They're not tough enough, Paul. I don't want to call
- 22:01Speaker 3: out anyone's toughness. They're just not physical enough to sustain
- 22:04Speaker 3: it for four quarters. I think Matt LaFleur is a
- 22:06Speaker 3: really good offensive coach, and that works awesome in the
- 22:08Speaker 3: first half. It does not get the win. I agree.
- 22:11Speaker 3: If he doesn't make the playoffs this year, I think
- 22:13Speaker 3: it might even be over, which is funny because he's
- 22:15Speaker 3: been great.
- 22:16Speaker 4: He has a high winning percentage every year, but that
- 22:19Speaker 4: seat is very hot.
- 22:20Speaker 5: Very, very hot. All right, coming up next, that was
- 22:22Speaker 5: Blipper Trend. You guys can play at home. Coming up next,
- 22:24Speaker 5: more on NFC North and the Bears. Kevin Fishbane, our
- 22:27Speaker 5: buddy from The Athletic, he covers it all. Stick around.
- 22:30Speaker 5: Not so fast.
- 22:33Speaker 4: Welcome back.
- 22:33Speaker 3: Not so fast. Perloff and Papps, NBC Sports Now, Peacock. Paul,
- 22:37Speaker 3: we've had a few days since the week one games happened.
- 22:40Speaker 4: So you think people cool off?
- 22:42Speaker 3: I got to tell you, people are not cooling off.
- 22:44Speaker 4: Not on your Chicago Bears.
- 22:45Speaker 5: And not with the Green Bay Packers on the other
- 22:47Speaker 5: side of that. A lot to chop up there.
- 22:49Speaker 3: All right. We're going to bring in athletic senior writer
- 22:51Speaker 3: Kevin Fishbane, who covers the Bears, the entire NFC North. Kevin,
- 22:56Speaker 3: we're old enough to remember when the Bears used to
- 22:58Speaker 3: be good at defense and not great on offense.
- 23:01Speaker 4: Are we ready for the new look Bears?
- 23:04Speaker 7: Well, I was wondering if Paul remembered the 1980 Bears,
- 23:08Speaker 7: Vince Evans going off for 61 points the last time
- 23:12Speaker 7: the Bears scored this many points.
- 23:14Speaker 5: But yeah, this is a.
- 23:15Speaker 7: a franchise founded on defense and running the football. And
- 23:18Speaker 7: one thing that Ben Johnson has carried over, they're really
- 23:21Speaker 7: good at running the football, but in today's NFL, he
- 23:24Speaker 7: finds a way for them to be an explosive offense
- 23:27Speaker 7: with the way that they run the football. So, yeah,
- 23:29Speaker 7: this city is still buzzing over their 59 points in
- 23:32Speaker 7: Week 1.
- 23:32Speaker 5: Okay, Fishbane, you're a responsible journalist. You're a measured guy.
- 23:36Speaker 5: You're in Chicago. Can you calm things down there, or
- 23:39Speaker 5: should it be the opposite? Should you expect similar, not 59,
- 23:43Speaker 5: but similar going forward for the Bears?
- 23:45Speaker 7: Well, Pauly, they scored 59 without Colson Loveland touching the football. So,
- 23:49Speaker 7: you know, there are fans that are letting their imaginations
- 23:52Speaker 7: run wild about what this could be. I think everyone
- 23:54Speaker 7: knows the Brian Flores defense on deck here with Minnesota
- 23:59Speaker 7: and then Vic Fangio's Eagles defense the next week. Good
- 24:02Speaker 7: wake-up calls to see like, hey, it might not be
- 24:04Speaker 7: that easy. Also, the defense certainly has... a ton of
- 24:07Speaker 7: work to do after giving up 37 to Carolina. But
- 24:10Speaker 7: I think what we saw is this offense has crazy potential,
- 24:13Speaker 7: and they can find lots of different ways to.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Score on you. Kevin, what's different about Caleb Williams this
- 24:18Speaker 3: year than the last two years?
- 24:21Speaker 5: Boy, is he locked in.
- 24:22Speaker 7: I mean, he really, not that anybody doubted it, but
- 24:26Speaker 7: this offseason, the work that he put in on accuracy,
- 24:30Speaker 7: on just becoming a master of this system that Ben
- 24:33Speaker 7: Johnson's put in for him, We've seen just an incredibly
- 24:36Speaker 7: focused Caleb William Stroud camp. And then a couple of
- 24:39Speaker 7: things like taking the checkdowns, right? He had a bunch
- 24:41Speaker 7: of them against Carolina. Making sure that when he scrambles,
- 24:45Speaker 7: he's still accurate. You saw a couple big plays when
- 24:48Speaker 7: he moved outside the pocket. So already week one, you're
- 24:51Speaker 7: seeing those incremental improvements from a guy who's armed talent-wise
- 24:55Speaker 7: and the way he runs, he can do anything he wants.
- 24:58Speaker 7: It's just kind of continuing to refine it. So yeah,
- 25:01Speaker 7: the Bears have to be pretty pleased with what he
- 25:03Speaker 7: did in the opener.
- 25:03Speaker 5: You know, I hate to be the reality check guy,
- 25:05Speaker 5: but the defense gave up 37 points.
- 25:06Speaker 3: And.
- 25:08Speaker 5: not against the best offense of all time. Last year,
- 25:10Speaker 5: the Bears' defense survived or thrived by taking away the football,
- 25:13Speaker 5: but some of those guys are gone. Kevin Byard's gone.
- 25:15Speaker 5: Deshaun Wright is gone. And they didn't add a lot
- 25:18Speaker 5: of impact guys. Thielman, the safety, is very interesting. But
- 25:21Speaker 5: can this team, I know they could do damage in
- 25:23Speaker 5: the NFC North, no problem there, but can you compete
- 25:26Speaker 5: in December, January, February with the Rams and the Seahawks
- 25:28Speaker 5: with this defense?
- 25:30Speaker 7: Well, they need these guys to step up, right? They
- 25:33Speaker 7: need Montez Sweat to play like a pro bowler. They
- 25:34Speaker 7: need Austin Booker, the other defensive end, to take a
- 25:37Speaker 7: big jump in his career. They need Dylan Thienemann, the
- 25:40Speaker 7: first-round pick, to play like a top pick already as
- 25:44Speaker 7: a rookie. Missing Kobe Bryant, that was a huge blow
- 25:46Speaker 7: to the defense. So Devin Bush, who came over in
- 25:49Speaker 7: free agency, they need him. to play at a high level.
- 25:53Speaker 7: I mean, you really, you look at the collection of players,
- 25:55Speaker 7: you're asking all of these guys to essentially play above
- 25:58Speaker 7: what they have been in their career. Or maybe a
- 26:00Speaker 7: guy like Grady Jarrett, find what he had earlier in
- 26:03Speaker 7: his career. So they're kind of asking for that, but
- 26:06Speaker 7: they're also hoping that more comfort in Dennis Allen's scheme
- 26:09Speaker 7: will allow Dennis Allen to, you know, throw some things
- 26:12Speaker 7: at offenses that can help them out. But the positive
- 26:15Speaker 7: thing from week one, you mentioned Theanaman, he had a
- 26:18Speaker 7: pretty good performance. Malik Mohamed, The fourth-round rookie, nickel-corner Ben Johnson,
- 26:22Speaker 7: is very pleased with what he did in week one. So, look,
- 26:24Speaker 7: if those guys can stand out, this group can improve.
- 26:27Speaker 7: But they really need players to have these breakout seasons. Otherwise,
- 26:31Speaker 7: they're going to need to score five, six touchdowns a week.
- 26:34Speaker 3: All right. I think Paul sort of jumped over the
- 26:36Speaker 3: NFC North a little bit. Who is the Bears' biggest
- 26:39Speaker 3: competition in the division?
- 26:43Speaker 7: Shoot, I would probably say Detroit. I know that they
- 26:47Speaker 7: had a brutal second half and letting the Saints kind
- 26:49Speaker 7: of climb back into that game, but you think about
- 26:52Speaker 7: how hungry that group is after what happened last year.
- 26:55Speaker 7: You look at Goff and Gibbs and Campbell and that
- 26:57Speaker 7: offensive line. I think that is still a team. Look,
- 27:00Speaker 7: they still swept the Bears last year, including the game
- 27:03Speaker 7: late in the season that didn't mean anything to Detroit.
- 27:05Speaker 7: I think that still is probably frustrating for the Bears
- 27:09Speaker 7: that they didn't get that, but I mean, all these teams,
- 27:11Speaker 7: you look at what the Vikings were able to do
- 27:12Speaker 7: without Kyler Murray. I know the Packers' fourth quarter thing
- 27:15Speaker 7: is a problem, but Jordan Love, Christian Watson, those guys
- 27:18Speaker 7: could still put up big plays. I'm expecting it to
- 27:21Speaker 7: be a really competitive division, but right now I think
- 27:23Speaker 7: Detroit is probably still going to be maybe the team
- 27:26Speaker 7: to beat. I know they were the odds-on favorite, but
- 27:28Speaker 7: you can make an argument for any of those four
- 27:30Speaker 7: to be the ones on top come January.
- 27:32Speaker 5: All right, Kevin, you covered the entire NFC North. They're
- 27:35Speaker 5: all cyclical. All those teams are bound together. I want
- 27:37Speaker 5: to talk about the Packers because the Bears fans, the
- 27:39Speaker 5: only thing they like more than watching the Bears win,
- 27:42Speaker 5: I really do believe, is watching the Packers lose in
- 27:44Speaker 5: painful fashion like they did on Sunday. Now, I don't
- 27:47Speaker 5: overreact on Week 1, but this seems like a hangover
- 27:50Speaker 5: from last year. Matt LaFleur caught a lot of flack
- 27:53Speaker 5: last year, the Packers head coach, about not closing games.
- 27:55Speaker 5: And he did it again Week 1 against technically a
- 27:58Speaker 5: third-string quarterback in Carson Wentz. If this were a situation,
- 28:02Speaker 5: what level of situation is it in Green Bay?
- 28:05Speaker 7: Yeah, again, you have a Pretty darn good quarterback. You
- 28:09Speaker 7: have the weapons there. There's a lot of talent. And
- 28:12Speaker 7: for them to have blown this fourth quarter lead, the
- 28:14Speaker 7: second in a row, if you count last year's playoff
- 28:17Speaker 7: loss in Chicago, there's a lot to think about with
- 28:20Speaker 7: the coaching decisions. And there's a lot to think about
- 28:22Speaker 7: of why is this team not showing that ability, that moxie,
- 28:27Speaker 7: to finish off opponents. That's what separates the great teams from...
- 28:31Speaker 7: in this league. So as much as you want to
- 28:33Speaker 7: write it off and say, well, it's just week one,
- 28:35Speaker 7: as you said, Paul, you have the evidence from last
- 28:37Speaker 7: year and LeFleur was under tons of heat at the
- 28:40Speaker 7: end of last season. I mean, to lose that way
- 28:42Speaker 7: in Chicago to your rival to end the season, boy,
- 28:45Speaker 7: oh boy. I mean, he's a great play caller, obviously,
- 28:48Speaker 7: and they've had a ton of success, but that's something
- 28:51Speaker 7: to continue monitoring this season because there's too much talent
- 28:55Speaker 7: there for them to not be able to close out
- 28:57Speaker 7: games like that.
- 28:58Speaker 3: All right, Kevin, if you're the Bears, who do you
- 28:59Speaker 3: want to see in Minnesota? Carson Wentz or Kyler Murray?
- 29:04Speaker 7: Oh, man, that's a great question. Well, I think you
- 29:09Speaker 7: probably would, I guess maybe Carson Wentz because you don't
- 29:11Speaker 7: have as much of the running that you have to
- 29:13Speaker 7: contend with. Like Kyler Murray, there's still a little bit
- 29:15Speaker 7: of unknown of that ability for him. to wiggle and
- 29:18Speaker 7: make some plays on the run, so maybe Wentz is
- 29:20Speaker 7: a somewhat easier scouting situation, but in the end, you're
- 29:24Speaker 7: still trying to stop the run, you're still trying to
- 29:26Speaker 7: stop Justin Jefferson, you're still finding a way to attack
- 29:29Speaker 7: that Brian Flores defense, but yeah, I guess maybe Carson Wentz,
- 29:32Speaker 7: but that guy's a veteran, and that guy, it was
- 29:36Speaker 7: a long time ago, he's come into Soldier Field and
- 29:38Speaker 7: played really well before, way earlier in his career. So
- 29:42Speaker 7: keep that in mind. This guy has got a lot
- 29:44Speaker 7: of confidence for everything that he's gone through in his career.
- 29:46Speaker 7: He's got a lot of experience and he's not afraid
- 29:48Speaker 7: to let it rip. So Those are two solid quarterbacks.
- 29:52Speaker 7: And they're probably looking at the Bears' defense. They're watching
- 29:54Speaker 7: that Carolina tape being like, we don't care who's a quarterback.
- 29:57Speaker 7: We're going to find ways to score points. So I
- 29:59Speaker 7: understand if Kevin O'Connell is going to enter Sunday with
- 30:01Speaker 7: a lot of confidence after seeing what the Bears' defense did.
- 30:04Speaker 5: All right, before we let you out of here, Kevin
- 30:05Speaker 5: Fishbane of The Athletic, big fan of Not So Fast.
- 30:08Speaker 5: For months he's been a fan of Not So Fast.
- 30:10Speaker 5: I want to give you credit for using the word
- 30:11Speaker 5: moxie on the show. First one, I'm checking my notes yet,
- 30:14Speaker 5: first time. Okay, last thing. We do a thing called
- 30:16Speaker 5: Such Thing as a Bad Question. You're a decorated sports writer.
- 30:19Speaker 5: You don't do this. We do this. Have you ever
- 30:22Speaker 5: been at a press conference, Ben Johnson or other, where
- 30:25Speaker 5: you got chewed out or close to chewed out?
- 30:28Speaker 7: Fortunately, I've never been chewed out, Paul. But this was
- 30:31Speaker 7: aired live, so I don't mind bringing it up. 49ers-Bears
- 30:34Speaker 7: last year. That was a crazy game, a wild finish.
- 30:38Speaker 7: Bears attempted a little hook and ladder there at the end.
- 30:40Speaker 7: I loved the call in the moment. I thought it
- 30:42Speaker 7: was awesome. DeAndre Schiff gets tackled and bounds, though, and
- 30:45Speaker 7: time comes off. Frenetic ending. They lose the game. And,
- 30:48Speaker 7: you know, Ben Johnson was pretty short with us afterwards,
- 30:51Speaker 7: understandably so. So you're kind of scrambling in your brain
- 30:53Speaker 7: to think of a way to ask the question. I
- 30:55Speaker 7: kind of just spit out something along the lines of,
- 30:57Speaker 7: were you okay with calling that play in that situation?
- 31:00Speaker 7: And he kind of looked right back at me and goes,
- 31:02Speaker 7: were you not? And then, you know, just that hush.
- 31:06Speaker 7: over the room because, of course, he was okay calling
- 31:09Speaker 7: that play a situation because he did call that play
- 31:13Speaker 7: a situation. So, you know, it was, again, he was
- 31:16Speaker 7: not upset with me at all. I was not upset
- 31:18Speaker 7: with his response. But, you know, listen, we all talk
- 31:21Speaker 7: about pressure-packed coaches. How about the pressure-packed media members to
- 31:25Speaker 7: kind of come up with on the fly those questions
- 31:27Speaker 7: that we've got to ask in those situations?
- 31:29Speaker 5: Yeah, and you don't get to take your shirt off
- 31:31Speaker 5: if you have a great question.
- 31:33Speaker 7: Well, they do frown upon that. There's no rule against it,
- 31:37Speaker 7: but we tend to avoid it.
- 31:40Speaker 4: Yeah, well, Kevin, listen, it's a change of pace in Chicago.
- 31:43Speaker 3: Maybe things are changing. They're going to score 50 points
- 31:45Speaker 3: a game. Should we expect that all year long? Maybe
- 31:48Speaker 3: you'll take your shirt off then. If they average over
- 31:51Speaker 3: 40 points a game, I want to see you just
- 31:53Speaker 3: put it all out there in Week 18.
- 31:56Speaker 7: OK, well, that would make you the only one then
- 31:58Speaker 7: for all to want that. So but yeah, I think
- 32:02Speaker 7: Bears fans are really trying to get used to this. Like, oh,
- 32:05Speaker 7: we might have a quarterback and a head coach that
- 32:07Speaker 7: we could actually be excited about. for a long time.
- 32:10Speaker 7: This is my 14th year covering this team, guys. I
- 32:13Speaker 7: can't even tell you off the top of my head
- 32:14Speaker 7: how many quarterbacks. I can tell you this is my
- 32:16Speaker 7: fifth head coach in only 14 years. So this is
- 32:19Speaker 7: all pretty new to everybody. But these guys are pretty
- 32:22Speaker 7: darn good, and they showed it in week one. So
- 32:24Speaker 7: I tell Bears fans, just enjoy it. Enjoy the ride.
- 32:26Speaker 7: See where it takes you. Let your dream, you know, dream.
- 32:29Speaker 7: Dream big and see where this thing goes.
- 32:32Speaker 3: Awesome. Thanks so much, Kevin. Talk to you soon.
- 32:34Speaker 5: See you, bud.
- 32:35Speaker 3: Thanks, guys.
- 32:36Speaker 5: Wow.
- 32:37Speaker 4: Dream big. I don't know, Paul, have you ever gotten
- 32:40Speaker 4: yelled at at a press conference, by the way?
- 32:41Speaker 5: I have not. I once had Lou Holtz ask me twice,
- 32:44Speaker 5: say that again. And I think I just stopped.
- 32:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:48Speaker 5: I didn't take my shirt off there either.
- 32:49Speaker 3: No, I once got glared at by Pat Riley.
- 32:52Speaker 5: Oh, that's big time.
- 32:53Speaker 3: Yeah, and it was just a normal question. Like, what
- 32:55Speaker 3: did you think of the second half? He just looked
- 32:56Speaker 3: at me like I was a lesser man.
- 32:58Speaker 4: And I was.
- 32:58Speaker 5: What a great moment.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:00Speaker 3: All right. Coming up next, we will go to the
- 33:02Speaker 3: clip joint. Something on the Dan Patrick show stood out
- 33:04Speaker 3: to me, and Paul will dive right into that. Not
- 33:07Speaker 3: so fast.
- 33:09Speaker 5: Wow, Pat Riley.
- 33:10Speaker 3: That's, I mean, that's... Yeah, I mean, it's tougher than
- 33:12Speaker 3: Ben Johnson. Ben Johnson looks no nonsense.
- 33:15Speaker 5: And with his hair, you're intimidated already, Pat Riley.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Give me the thing that you know is true right
- 33:26Speaker 2: now with the NFL after one week that is going
- 33:28Speaker 2: to be sustainable the rest of the season. Good or bad?
- 33:32Speaker 8: Yeah, the Cowboys defense is not fixed. That jumped out
- 33:36Speaker 8: to me as something that was a huge blinking red light.
- 33:41Speaker 8: When the story of your previous season is your defense
- 33:45Speaker 8: is bad, if you could get to mediocre, then you
- 33:47Speaker 8: might have a contender. And then your entire offseason is,
- 33:50Speaker 8: is spent bringing in players that you think will fix this,
- 33:54Speaker 8: drafting players, signing players you think will fix it, bringing
- 33:56Speaker 8: in a new defensive coordinator you think will fix it,
- 33:59Speaker 8: and then game one, primetime, Monday night, you can't get
- 34:03Speaker 8: a stop in must-stop obvious rundowns.
- 34:06Speaker 5: That, to me, jumped off the page.
- 34:08Speaker 8: The coverage breakdowns, they stink, but I feel like you
- 34:11Speaker 8: can coach around that. You're still getting pushed around after
- 34:14Speaker 8: all that time, to me, is a big, big red
- 34:17Speaker 8: flag for the Cowboys going forward.
- 34:19Speaker 5: Back on Not So Fast, Pabst and Perloff here. Don't forget,
- 34:22Speaker 5: check out our show on podcast. Wherever your podcasts are found,
- 34:24Speaker 5: search Not So Fast for the podcast where you can
- 34:27Speaker 5: listen on your drive. All right, Perloff. That was Dominique Foxworth,
- 34:30Speaker 5: who is a very measured analyst. I look at him
- 34:33Speaker 5: as a voice of reason, but he said something there
- 34:35Speaker 5: at the end about the Cowboys. They're still getting pushed around,
- 34:39Speaker 5: and that was supposed to stop.
- 34:40Speaker 3: I know. They traded Micah Parsons, and they brought in
- 34:43Speaker 3: Quinton Williams and Kenny Clark. The one thing those guys,
- 34:45Speaker 3: that they're paying a lot of money to, should be
- 34:47Speaker 3: able to do is stop the run, and the Giants
- 34:49Speaker 3: just Ran all over them and also passed all over them.
- 34:52Speaker 4: Did anything they wanted.
- 34:53Speaker 5: And what bothered me more is that the offense didn't
- 34:55Speaker 5: keep up. Like, I understand it's going to be a
- 34:57Speaker 5: track meet in some of those games and the defense
- 34:58Speaker 5: might take a little while to get up to speed.
- 35:01Speaker 5: Caleb Downs, the safety looked really good. But if the
- 35:04Speaker 5: offense can't score 25, the defense, it won't even matter.
- 35:08Speaker 3: How are you supposed to keep up when you only
- 35:09Speaker 3: get the ball twice in the second half? I think
- 35:12Speaker 3: Dominique kind of nailed it. For me, it's the fact
- 35:14Speaker 3: that I built them up so much in my mind preseason.
- 35:17Speaker 3: You know, if they had played this game in New
- 35:19Speaker 3: York and it was an emotional night, then maybe I
- 35:22Speaker 3: could forgive them. But I had convinced myself they were
- 35:24Speaker 3: basically the doomsday D all over again.
- 35:26Speaker 5: I'm going to not so fast you to not bail
- 35:28Speaker 5: on the Cowboys. I think that this team has enough
- 35:30Speaker 5: new talent that they're going to pick it up. And
- 35:32Speaker 5: I don't think the Eagles are unbeatable. The Washington Commanders
- 35:35Speaker 5: seem iffy. And, you know, the Giants improved, but not
- 35:39Speaker 5: really threatening.
- 35:40Speaker 3: Well, actually, I'm not so fast as you. I'm not
- 35:42Speaker 3: so fast back and forth. I think the Giants might
- 35:45Speaker 3: be really good. Really good.
- 35:47Speaker 5: Are you falling for your own stuff?
- 35:49Speaker 3: I am. I'm overreacting like crazy. John Harbaugh, obviously, is
- 35:52Speaker 3: a winning coach. But Jackson Dart, to me, looked elite.
- 35:56Speaker 3: And if you can't scataboo healthy for at least half
- 35:59Speaker 3: the season, you're out of the game.
- 36:00Speaker 5: No more backflips, bro. And I love their defensive line.
- 36:03Speaker 5: They didn't get a sack, but their defensive line is fantastic.
- 36:06Speaker 3: Oh, Abdul Carter finally showed up. Former number three overall pick. Obviously,
- 36:09Speaker 3: Brian Burns is elite. Maybe the Cowboys lost to a
- 36:13Speaker 3: really good team and we just didn't realize it.
- 36:14Speaker 5: All right, next up on the clip joint, let's get
- 36:16Speaker 5: to one that was pretty hot earlier today. We talked
- 36:18Speaker 5: a little baseball earlier. We know about Pete Alonzo, former Met.
- 36:22Speaker 5: Now he's an Oriole. Goes back to play against the Mets.
- 36:25Speaker 5: The Mets are out of it. The Orioles are out
- 36:26Speaker 5: of it. He hits home run number 300. The fans
- 36:29Speaker 5: gave him a standing O, full standing O, during a
- 36:32Speaker 5: competitive-ish game where he tied up. Dan was a little
- 36:35Speaker 5: salty about this one. He came out of the gate.
- 36:37Speaker 5: Here's how it went.
- 36:39Speaker 3: I would have a problem with it.
- 36:41Speaker 2: Now, some of the Mets fans that we have who
- 36:42Speaker 2: work here in the back said this could have been
- 36:45Speaker 2: a middle finger to management. The fans are cheering the
- 36:50Speaker 2: guy that you allowed to leave via free agency. If
- 36:54Speaker 2: it's a frustration cheer, I understand that. But are you
- 36:58Speaker 2: trying to tell me if you're in a pennant race,
- 37:01Speaker 2: you're holding on for a wild card berth. and Pete
- 37:05Speaker 2: Alonso hits his 300th home run in the ninth inning,
- 37:09Speaker 2: you're going to give him a standing ovation? The answer
- 37:12Speaker 2: is no, you're not.
- 37:15Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm with Dan on this.
- 37:17Speaker 3: I think the Mets fan base has a little bit
- 37:19Speaker 3: of loser energy, Paul. I really do.
- 37:21Speaker 5: That's fair. It is a loser energy, but they are losers.
- 37:24Speaker 5: And I think that was a total frustration cheer last night.
- 37:26Speaker 5: Let's appreciate Alonzo. We miss him. Let management hear that.
- 37:29Speaker 5: We're cheering the opponent.
- 37:30Speaker 4: That's an interesting angle.
- 37:31Speaker 5: It felt like complete frustration because anyone in the building
- 37:34Speaker 5: last night is the hardest core of hardcore Mets fans.
- 37:37Speaker 3: Yeah, listen, I come from Philadelphia where we boo our
- 37:39Speaker 3: own players, let alone the other players.
- 37:41Speaker 5: When they're doing well.
- 37:42Speaker 4: Someone put a hypothetical to me.
- 37:44Speaker 3: If Chase Utley, a former Philly, had done something big
- 37:47Speaker 3: against the Phillies, would I have cheered?
- 37:49Speaker 4: No way.
- 37:49Speaker 3: Dan's actually totally right. If it's a playoff race, you
- 37:53Speaker 3: boo him no matter who he is. I don't care
- 37:55Speaker 3: what he did in New York. I definitely don't come
- 37:58Speaker 3: away from this feeling good about the Mets.
- 38:00Speaker 5: Feels like a must-boo situation.
- 38:01Speaker 4: All right, let's go to the NFL.
- 38:03Speaker 3: The Chargers laid an egg against the Cardinals in Week 1.
- 38:06Speaker 4: Jim Harbaugh tried to explain what went wrong.
- 38:09Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, we made some preseason type of mistakes. Now,
- 38:13Speaker 9: in retrospect, you know, we should play our guys a
- 38:16Speaker 9: little bit more in the preseason and give them those,
- 38:18Speaker 9: give them those, those reps, but those game-like reps onward
- 38:24Speaker 9: and attack in all areas to, to find improvement.
- 38:30Speaker 5: Pearl, this is a classic blame me, not them situation.
- 38:34Speaker 5: He's taking the blame for not playing his players more
- 38:36Speaker 5: in the preseason. Thus, they couldn't have been ready because
- 38:39Speaker 5: he didn't let them be ready. Instead of saying, our
- 38:41Speaker 5: players didn't show up against a subpar team, he said,
- 38:43Speaker 5: blame me for not giving preseason reps.
- 38:46Speaker 3: Yeah, but that's what went wrong. Why are coaches still
- 38:50Speaker 3: not playing guys in the preseason? You can see it
- 38:51Speaker 3: around the NFL. The players that played in the preseason
- 38:54Speaker 3: looked better in week one. Maybe that's legit. Maybe it
- 38:57Speaker 3: was the lack of action. Maybe next year they'll come
- 39:00Speaker 3: out and give Herbert more time because they looked like
- 39:02Speaker 3: they had never played together before.
- 39:04Speaker 5: It was a total blame me situation. Here's another coach.
- 39:06Speaker 5: We've got to go to the next coach who was
- 39:07Speaker 5: frustrated and disappointed in week one. Sean Payton says the
- 39:11Speaker 5: offensive issues, again, blame me, are on him. Here's how
- 39:14Speaker 5: that went.
- 39:16Speaker 10: I thought there were a number of places we have
- 39:19Speaker 10: to look.
- 39:19Speaker 5: Our third down.
- 39:21Speaker 10: Numbers weren't good. Our rushing numbers weren't good.
- 39:25Speaker 5: Pick your spot.
- 39:27Speaker 10: Look, it was just as a head coach always, whether
- 39:30Speaker 10: you're calling the plays or you're not, you know, it's
- 39:33Speaker 10: regardless of who's calling the plays. When you have a
- 39:35Speaker 10: game like that and you're the head coach, you know,
- 39:38Speaker 10: it's frustrating.
- 39:39Speaker 5: It's disappointing.
- 39:42Speaker 10: And I don't know that the feeling is any different
- 39:46Speaker 10: whether you're calling them or not, honestly.
- 39:49Speaker 3: This is one of the biggest stories in the NFL
- 39:50Speaker 3: to me. Broncos have Super Bowl expectations. Week one was
- 39:53Speaker 3: not good for Davis Webb. Not only did they not
- 39:55Speaker 3: move the ball, they had trouble getting plays into Bo Nix,
- 39:58Speaker 3: which was a problem last year. When does Sean Payton
- 40:00Speaker 3: take over is a legit question to me. And honestly,
- 40:03Speaker 3: I think sooner rather than later. Sean Payton's an awesome
- 40:05Speaker 3: play caller. Why is he doing this experiment? People are
- 40:08Speaker 3: saying maybe they didn't want Davis Webb to leave the team.
- 40:10Speaker 5: Yep.
- 40:11Speaker 3: Obviously, he's not that valuable because, as Peyton, you could
- 40:14Speaker 3: see there, he's not happy with the product.
- 40:16Speaker 5: Yeah, Pearl, I think this is a case of Sean
- 40:17Speaker 5: Peyton backing his guy, Davis Webb, week one. I don't
- 40:20Speaker 5: know in week four if he's going to do so
- 40:21Speaker 5: because if they can't run the ball, if they don't
- 40:23Speaker 5: get the ball to waddle, it's really nuts. Not getting
- 40:25Speaker 5: the ball to waddle is really, really nuts.
- 40:27Speaker 3: Yeah, you can't run the ball if you don't hand
- 40:29Speaker 3: the ball off. They only tried six runs in the
- 40:30Speaker 3: first half. It was a total collapse.
- 40:33Speaker 4: Hey, you know what?
- 40:34Speaker 3: They were in KC, but there's not a lot of time.
- 40:36Speaker 3: They have a hard schedule. They've got to fix it immediately.
- 40:38Speaker 5: He's a visor guy. Are you a visor guy?
- 40:40Speaker 1: No.
- 40:41Speaker 5: Never, never, right?
- 40:42Speaker 3: I think you need to be, A, an assistant football
- 40:44Speaker 3: coach for years to really feel comfortable in the visor.
- 40:46Speaker 5: If I coached in the SEC, I'd be first team
- 40:48Speaker 5: all visor. Coming up next, constructive criticism and a hot
- 40:52Speaker 5: new segment, Cool or Crazy. We love alliteration here on
- 40:55Speaker 5: Not So Fast.
- 40:55Speaker 3: Stick around.
- 40:57Speaker 4: All right, we're back on Not So Fast.
- 40:58Speaker 3: I'm Perloff. He's Pabst. In the last segment, Paul, you
- 41:00Speaker 3: said you hate alliteration. That's right.
- 41:02Speaker 4: Yet your name is Paul Pabst.
- 41:04Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 41:06Speaker 4: I wonder if that's why.
- 41:07Speaker 3: Well, with that, we're going to go to a new
- 41:09Speaker 3: segment called Cool or Crazy. We're going to look at
- 41:13Speaker 3: some great sound from college coaches around the nation, and
- 41:16Speaker 3: we're going to decide if it's cool or crazy. Let's
- 41:17Speaker 3: start with a clip that everybody's been talking about. James Franklin,
- 41:20Speaker 3: Virginia Tech. Was this cool or crazy?
- 41:24Speaker 5: Michael Howes with the Baltimore Sun.
- 41:26Speaker 11: Hey, Michael.
- 41:27Speaker 5: Hey, Michael.
- 41:28Speaker 3: What do you remember about working?
- 41:30Speaker 1: Hey, Michael.
- 41:32Speaker 5: What do you remember about working alongside? Hey, Michael.
- 41:34Speaker 3: How you doing, Michael? Michael, how you doing? Can you
- 41:40Speaker 3: hear me? Yeah, I'm saying how you doing?
- 41:42Speaker 1: Good.
- 41:43Speaker 3: How are you? Good. Good.
- 41:44Speaker 5: This is What's Beyond Crazy. I thought this was like
- 41:48Speaker 5: an AI glitch where they're going, hey, Michael.
- 41:50Speaker 3: Hey, Michael.
- 41:51Speaker 5: Like a robot that the batteries are wearing out. He's staring.
- 41:54Speaker 5: He's not blinking. He's got the glasses. how do you
- 41:57Speaker 5: not know you're going to come off like an absolute
- 41:59Speaker 5: nutcase when you do that?
- 42:00Speaker 3: Yeah. You know, it's funny. I thought it was funny
- 42:02Speaker 3: at first. Then I was like, okay, I'm over this.
- 42:04Speaker 3: Now it's funny again. It's one of those things. It
- 42:06Speaker 3: gets funnier as we get farther away from it.
- 42:08Speaker 5: And it's transfixing. I can't not watch it.
- 42:09Speaker 4: So the Michael, I don't even remember his last name.
- 42:12Speaker 4: I'm sorry.
- 42:12Speaker 3: He's become a bit of a star because of this clip.
- 42:14Speaker 3: And he, now he's going on camera and talking about
- 42:16Speaker 3: the interview. He loved it. So he's okay.
- 42:18Speaker 4: All right, let's go to our next clip.
- 42:20Speaker 3: This is from Jason Eck, the New Mexico coach, who
- 42:23Speaker 3: is our kind of guy, Paul.
- 42:26Speaker 6: They're, um, going to be a challenge you know we're
- 42:28Speaker 6: definitely stepping up in class it's kind of like we've
- 42:32Speaker 6: you know been going to like fast food restaurants to
- 42:34Speaker 6: eat now all of a sudden we got an invite
- 42:35Speaker 6: to the nicest steakhouse in town and you're checking your
- 42:39Speaker 6: wallet to make sure you have enough to cover it
- 42:41Speaker 6: because you don't want to be embarrassed because this certainly
- 42:43Speaker 6: is a team that can embarrass you.
- 42:45Speaker 5: I thought this was like a Ted Lasso bit on
- 42:47Speaker 5: NBC or a bit on SNL that's like a Chris
- 42:50Speaker 5: Farley this guy could sweat an ice cooler I love
- 42:53Speaker 5: this guy he's fantastic He's got star power written all
- 42:56Speaker 5: over him.
- 42:56Speaker 3: No, Jason Eck is our kind of guy. Fast food restaurants,
- 42:59Speaker 3: he looks like he knows all about them.
- 43:01Speaker 5: Oh, I would call him before I went out to
- 43:02Speaker 5: eat anywhere.
- 43:03Speaker 3: What do you think of a coach in general saying,
- 43:05Speaker 3: you know, we're about to face a team that's really good?
- 43:08Speaker 3: I kind of got the vibe like, oh, I might
- 43:09Speaker 3: bet against New Mexico.
- 43:11Speaker 5: I would say he's more cool because he's definitely not crazy.
- 43:13Speaker 5: He knows what he's doing. He's completely calculated, and he's lovable.
- 43:16Speaker 3: Okay, our next cool or crazy is John Summerall down
- 43:20Speaker 3: at Florida getting rather intense before their showdown with Auburn.
- 43:25Speaker 12: Yeah, there's ties, but Florida pays my mortgage, you know?
- 43:28Speaker 12: So any family that is pulling against us, they ain't
- 43:32Speaker 12: my family. I mean, I don't care what their last
- 43:35Speaker 12: name is. You know what I mean? Allegiances, I mean, look,
- 43:39Speaker 12: I got a lot of respect for Auburn. It's a
- 43:41Speaker 12: great place, good people. I got a lot of friends.
- 43:45Speaker 12: My wife went to school there, you know what I mean?
- 43:47Speaker 12: And so a lot of crossover, but I'm a Florida Gator,
- 43:50Speaker 12: and everybody– affiliated with me closely as a Florida Gator.
- 43:53Speaker 12: They're not affiliated with me closely.
- 43:55Speaker 5: This is pure football, Coach. I'm done with my family.
- 43:58Speaker 5: I'm only focused on football. That's a good sign for
- 44:00Speaker 5: Florida football.
- 44:01Speaker 4: I think it's a little crazy.
- 44:02Speaker 3: I've always thought Summerall is performing a little bit. That's crazy.
- 44:05Speaker 4: His wife went to Auburn.
- 44:06Speaker 3: Is he not going to talk to her the week
- 44:08Speaker 3: of the game?
- 44:08Speaker 5: But his wife is rooting clearly for Florida because that
- 44:11Speaker 5: pays the bills. But her brother, is he rooting for
- 44:15Speaker 5: Auburn or rooting for Florida? You've got to go blood
- 44:18Speaker 5: over Actually, I don't know how it works in the SEC.
- 44:20Speaker 5: You stick with your squad, right? I think you stick
- 44:22Speaker 5: with your squad.
- 44:22Speaker 3: I mean, listen, obviously he's rooting for him, but John Summerall,
- 44:25Speaker 3: a bit of a tough guy act there to me.
- 44:27Speaker 3: I will say that to his face.
- 44:28Speaker 5: Mildly crazy?
- 44:30Speaker 3: Oh, definitely mildly crazy, but not too crazy. All right,
- 44:32Speaker 3: our last cool or crazy, let's go to Dabo Sweeney,
- 44:36Speaker 3: who made a comparison.
- 44:36Speaker 5: Crazy. I'm sorry I jumped this one.
- 44:38Speaker 11: I hate to even say it, but, I mean, I
- 44:40Speaker 11: recruited Tebow. You know, so physically, you know, he's just
- 44:44Speaker 11: gifted like that. I'm not saying he's Tim Tebow. Please
- 44:47Speaker 11: don't say that and write that. I'm just answering your question.
- 44:50Speaker 11: Maybe I shouldn't have answered the question.
- 44:53Speaker 3: Okay, so Dabo was asked about his new quarterback and
- 44:57Speaker 3: made what I think is a mistake to compare him
- 44:59Speaker 3: physically to Tim Tebow. Dabo was obviously with Tebow at
- 45:02Speaker 3: some point. I don't know what he was saying. He
- 45:04Speaker 3: recruited him? Right. Oh, no, sorry. He recruited him and
- 45:05Speaker 3: didn't get him. He must have been probably at Alabama
- 45:07Speaker 3: or Clemson. You don't compare your incoming quarterback to Tim Tebow.
- 45:11Speaker 5: Yeah, one of the greatest, most successful college quarterbacks of
- 45:14Speaker 5: all time, whatever you think of his pro career. Dabo,
- 45:16Speaker 5: I think, knew in the moment. You see him kind
- 45:18Speaker 5: of go, oh. He kind of grappled with himself at
- 45:21Speaker 5: one point and said, what did I just do there?
- 45:22Speaker 3: Yeah, so you're right. That was a crazy, crazy comment.
- 45:26Speaker 5: That was fun. Cool or crazy, I think that's going
- 45:28Speaker 5: to be a staple here. Now, staying with alliteration as
- 45:31Speaker 5: we do here, it's time for Constructive Criticism. Here we go.
- 45:35Speaker 5: What you think about what we're doing, what we're saying,
- 45:37Speaker 5: or maybe some sports stuff. Here we go. Would you
- 45:41Speaker 5: pay the PSL fee if your team built a new
- 45:44Speaker 5: stadium after being a 20-year season ticket holder? I don't
- 45:48Speaker 5: know if you have a choice these days. I think
- 45:50Speaker 5: the PSL is the right to buy the season ticket.
- 45:53Speaker 5: What's your option? No longer be a season ticket holder?
- 45:55Speaker 5: I mean, you could shake your fist at the clouds,
- 45:57Speaker 5: but I don't know what you do here.
- 45:58Speaker 3: I don't buy it. I hate this so much. You
- 46:01Speaker 3: earn that season ticket over the years. And when the
- 46:03Speaker 3: new stadium comes in, probably paid for with tax funds
- 46:07Speaker 3: like we're going to see in Buffalo this weekend, I
- 46:09Speaker 3: think they're gouging fans. It's totally unfair. If you've been
- 46:12Speaker 3: there for 20 years, you should not have to pay
- 46:15Speaker 3: another fee.
- 46:15Speaker 5: It seems like everyone's doing it. All right, here's the
- 46:16Speaker 5: next one, constructive criticism. Paul, let's get this tailgate tip
- 46:20Speaker 5: of the week going. Football is secondary. I won't go there.
- 46:24Speaker 5: The tailgate is vital, but make sure you respect and
- 46:27Speaker 5: go watch the game. I don't like people who skip
- 46:28Speaker 5: the game for the tailgate. That's the tailgate tip. Don't
- 46:31Speaker 5: go into the game late. Go to the tailgate early.
- 46:33Speaker 5: If your game is at noon, you should start tailgating
- 46:36Speaker 5: by 9 a.m. At 11.30, you eat a lot, you
- 46:40Speaker 5: drink a lot, and start heading in toward the game.
- 46:42Speaker 5: There could be a lot of crowds. There's your tailgate tip.
- 46:44Speaker 3: What if it's like Notre Dame Rice where you know
- 46:46Speaker 3: it's going to be a blowout? Can't you come in
- 46:47Speaker 3: a little late, Paul?
- 46:48Speaker 9: No.
- 46:49Speaker 3: Ribs or something around, and they're good?
- 46:50Speaker 1: Ribs.
- 46:51Speaker 5: You didn't tell me about ribs. All right, next one,
- 46:53Speaker 5: constructive criticism. What is the required drop on a 12-foot
- 46:56Speaker 5: run of 5-inch gutters? That's a curveball question because you
- 46:59Speaker 5: and I aren't what you'd call handy.
- 47:01Speaker 3: The required drop, the 12-foot run.
- 47:04Speaker 4: I don't even know what that means.
- 47:05Speaker 5: I think they thought they were going to get us here,
- 47:07Speaker 5: but I went to the big German, Eric Jones, who
- 47:09Speaker 5: knows everything about everything, operations of the Dan Patrick Show.
- 47:12Speaker 5: He says you want it between a fourth-inch and a
- 47:14Speaker 5: half-inch slope per 10-foot run of gutters. I'd aim for
- 47:17Speaker 5: three-eighths of an inch of a total slope on the
- 47:19Speaker 5: 12-foot run. Walk-off by Eric Jones, the big German. That's
- 47:23Speaker 5: gutter talk right there.
- 47:24Speaker 4: Yeah, to me, that's a line right there.
- 47:26Speaker 3: If you actually clean your own gutters and you're a
- 47:29Speaker 3: real homeowner, and I live in an apartment, so it's
- 47:32Speaker 3: never going to happen for me.
- 47:33Speaker 5: All right, it's time for the feel-good here, Perloff. This
- 47:35Speaker 5: is the feel-good. I'm not sure how good this one is, though.
- 47:39Speaker 5: Check this game out. Tanya, will you marry me? Jim, P.S.
- 47:43Speaker 5: the ring is on the way on the Jumbotron at
- 47:45Speaker 5: the Yankee game.
- 47:47Speaker 3: What do you mean the ring is on the way?
- 47:49Speaker 3: Like in the eighth inning it's coming in out of
- 47:51Speaker 3: the bullpen? What does the ring is on the way mean?
- 47:53Speaker 5: Yeah, the boys at FedEx have it at the facility.
- 47:55Speaker 5: You've got to pick it up. The ring is on
- 47:56Speaker 5: the way meaning I'm asking you to marry me, but
- 47:59Speaker 5: I don't have a ring yet? Is that what that infers?
- 48:01Speaker 3: Yeah, because you.
- 48:02Speaker 4: Can't afford the ring? So you get a little plastic
- 48:04Speaker 4: ring as a placeholder. Do something.
- 48:06Speaker 5: He's trying to lock her down with a ring to
- 48:09Speaker 5: be named later, and I don't like it.
- 48:11Speaker 3: Do we need a not-so-fast policy on baseball game proposals
- 48:15Speaker 3: to start with?
- 48:16Speaker 5: Yeah, baseball game proposals. You should be at the game
- 48:19Speaker 5: with your possible fiancé standing there, and you should point
- 48:22Speaker 5: to the screen. I didn't see any camera work there.
- 48:24Speaker 3: Well, that might have come later. I'm not sure I'm
- 48:27Speaker 3: pro-proposal at a baseball game.
- 48:28Speaker 4: I might do it a little more romantic.
- 48:30Speaker 5: There is no more romantic thing than doing it at
- 48:32Speaker 5: a baseball game with hot, sweaty guys yelling around you.
- 48:36Speaker 4: At least have a ring. I mean, this guy's 0
- 48:38Speaker 4: for 2 in my mind.
- 48:38Speaker 5: You're better than that. You're 0 for 2, and you're
- 48:40Speaker 5: about to take the ha. All right, that's it for
- 48:42Speaker 5: us on Not So Fast. Tune into the podcast every day.
- 48:45Speaker 5: Tune in to the show every day and tune in
- 48:47Speaker 5: to the Dan Patrick Show every day, 9 to noon Eastern,
- 48:49Speaker 5: right here on NBC Sports Now and Peacock. That's it, Pearl.
- 48:53Speaker 3: We're done.
