- 2:34SPEAKER_01: and stepping into life.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: And this podcast is interrupting the flow of podcasts.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: I was going to do the second half of the Miner's Tour.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: I was going to tell the Miner's Tour story and my...
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: beautiful soul sister Anna Davis was going to come on and talk about some remedies
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: she's a homeopath and I'm really looking forward to that next week but we're
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: getting close to that night that we call Halloween that night that we used to call
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: and are reclaiming Samhain
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: And it's right that the ordinary,
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: that the linear should be interrupted by ceremony at this time of year.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: And so I've lit my fire and I'm sitting by it to sit with what comes up for this
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: podcast in a different way.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: And what I've been feeling today is my ancestors
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: And when I say ancestors, I mean, that's my cauldron.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Did you hear that chink?
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: That is the handle of my cauldron.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: And I have a whole cauldron filled with rose petals from some flowers that a dear friend Lele gave me.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: They've been on my altar for a long time.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: But yeah, ancestors, thinking about my grandmother.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: And I found a thread to my grandmother today because I was feeling extremely lonely.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: Like deep in my DNA lonely and I suddenly thought this loneliness, it's not my loneliness.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: It doesn't belong to me.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: It's like I was born with this loneliness.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: And it got me to thinking about
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: generations back, say like three generations back, maybe we weren't even alive.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: Our ancestors, three or four generations back, weren't even alive past 35, 40.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: So what blueprint do we really have for this age?
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: And the thing that
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: helps us to navigate life,
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: this nature that we have all around us that is birth,
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: death,
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: life,
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: birth,
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: death,
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: life,
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: I feel very disconnected to right now.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: And I'm wondering how to find my way back to my connection.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: And it feels so important because it feels like we're wintering.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: And it can be really easy to stay indoors all winter.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: And I don't want to, I really don't want to.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: And I, I want to find a connection that I've never had before with the land.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: And I wonder if any of my ancestors ever had it.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: So it's got me to thinking to light my fire.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: and to hold this cauldron of rose petals in my arms like a baby.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: Because they say, you know, this whole Halloween malarkey.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: I could give you a whole backstory around Halloween in Sir Wayne, but I'm sure you'll find it everywhere
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: But Samhain, Halloween, it started with the Celts.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: And I want to say in Ireland,
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: there's evidence for there being Samhain ceremonies long,
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: long,
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: long way back.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: And it's this harvest time.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: It's the harvest time when we bring, we're bringing it all in, bringing it all in, bringing it all in.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: That reminds me of that Waterboy song.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Bring it all in, bring it all in, bring it all in, bring it all in, bring it all into my heart.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: Bring it all in, bring it all in, bring them all in, bring them all in, bring them all into my heart.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: So this Halloween thing.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: There's different strands to it.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: So in Ireland, they say that there was this jack-o'-lantern fella.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: And I think he did nefarious deeds.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: He was kind of shifty.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: And there's some story about him kind of neither being in heaven or hell.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: So kind of, you know, wandering around the towns.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: And so people would carve a turnip and stick it outside to kind of ward off these
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: spirits that had nowhere to go.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: These spirits that hadn't found their home once dead.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: And so I'm lighting this fire tonight.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: And that's what people used to do,
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: they would put out their fires in their home and they would have a big fire,
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: like,
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: bonfire night,
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: have a big fire together.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: And so much can go on that fire, dead wood on the fire.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: And I'm asking my grandparents,
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: my great grandparents,
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: my great,
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: great grandparents,
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: I'm calling forth all of you now to say,
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Thank you for my life.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: Thank you for my life.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: And may I light a fire for you for anything that you want to put upon the fire.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: Anything unlived in your life.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: Anything that's unresolved inside you.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: I'm putting these rose petals on the fire to honour your life.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: To
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: feed you with some sweetness.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: To ask that you be really, really well fed by this offering.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: It's really near the microphone, that's creepiness, sorry.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: Mmm.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: And so the fire's flames are rich and full right now.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: If there's anything you want to put on the fire,
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: if there's anything you're feeling,
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: listeners,
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: dreamers,
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: that you just want to feel to come off
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: of your shoulders and just imagine you're just chucking stuff onto this fire which
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: is lit for you,
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: lit for all of you.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: I don't want to ward off
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: any spirits that can't find their way home any parts of me or anyone else that
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: can't find their way home i want to i want to light the way home for them so when i
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: carve my swede or my pumpkin it went over to america and turned into a pumpkin and
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: came back a pumpkin
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: When the Irish and the Scottish went to America.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: You see,
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: that kind of noise is the kind of thing that people are saying,
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: you should edit your podcasts because of that kind of noise.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: So maybe one day you've got to listen to this podcast and you won't hear that horrible noise.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: But not this week.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: So I've been researching a lot.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: I wanted to very cleverly tell you about this Samhain,
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: this Halloween,
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: this All Hallows Eve,
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: the way that the church made it their own,
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: the way that the sugar explosion,
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: the sugar invention created this kind of abundant sugar fest.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: But none of it really,
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: all the research I did,
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: none of it really resonated for me in the place I was already kind of dreaming into
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: in this way that we can use this night for our soul soothing,
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: for our benefit.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, I think I'm just going to tell you about my dreaming and my imaginal
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: use for this night that we call Halloween, that we call Sir Wayne, that we call All Hallows Eve.
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: It's the harvest time, we're stocking up, we're filling up, we're putting our gardens to bed
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: And they say that the veil is thin.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: I live in Glastonbury,
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: everyone's saying that,
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: oh,
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: the veil's so thin right now,
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: it's practically non-existent.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, what does that mean?
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: What does that really mean?
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: There's a belief that there's a veil that separates the living and the dead.
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: And that usually it's like a kind of thick fire curtain.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: But on these nights, it's gossamer thin.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: And that it's a good night to remember the people that have died,
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: to remember our ancestors that have died,
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: like the Mexicans do it with the Day of the Dead in Italy.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: There's great ceremonies.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: There's ceremonies of death all around the world at this time.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: So I've got some pictures here.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: My grandmother's, my granddad.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: And I'm thinking,
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: and I've been thinking all day about them,
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: about their unlived lives,
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: about their wishes.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: But selfishly, I have been thinking about how it's woven into my DNA.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: Their lives are woven into my DNA.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: And I feel like I've got to a place in my life where I can't step forward without
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: some kind of ancestral clearing or ancestral healing.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: So this moment by this fire on this night is my peeping in and showing up.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: A really terrible noise.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: Shit.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: I don't know what to do now.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: I don't know whether to carry on.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: Maybe I'm going to carry on and I'm going to see if I can get someone to delete that for me.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: That's my speaker turning off.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: It's so annoying.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: If anyone knows how to delete that.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: Focus, Sarah.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: That woke you up, didn't it?
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: Anyone that was just drifting off with my voice there, I'm aware that that woke you up.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: So I'm going to bring something important for you now.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: us here bring them all here bring them all here bring them all here light a candle
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: get their photos out dig them out because tonight they can dance in a way that they
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: haven't danced before tonight they can live in a way that they have not lived
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: before
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: Oh my,
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: my,
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: it's just,
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: it's just,
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: there's,
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: there's,
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: I can feel this restricted place in my body and I just want to release it and I can
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: feel it just releasing and releasing and releasing.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: So let's just unwind and unwind and unwind and unwind ourselves.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: this whole path so that we can live full lives,
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: so that we can be happy for fuck's sake,
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: so that we can be fucking happy,
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: so that we can be joyful,
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: so that it can be joy,
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: joy,
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: joy,
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: so that we look around and we're like,
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: yeah,
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: we did it.
- 16:23SPEAKER_01: We did it.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: We got the village back.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: We're connected.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: We trust each other.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: We've got it going on.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm really asking for.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: in this night, by this fire.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: I'm really asking that I can know that my stepping in,
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: that I'm stepping into a life that will be worthwhile,
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: that I am so much that my children don't have to sit in my unprocessed life.
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: I don't want that for them.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: I don't want that for me.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: So I'm just asking for some movement, some traction, some letting go, some joy, some lightness, some fun.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: And I'm putting some, there we go, listen to that.
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: Putting all on the fire.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: Putting a big prayer on the fire.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: Once you can hear these sounds, just make prayers.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: Just make prayers, intentions.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: Call it out to the fire.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: I put some cedar on the fire so that you can really, really, really make prayers.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: All the time that this is crackling, we're here for you.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: This fire is here for you.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: to lift up your prayers,
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: to let go of whatever,
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: but it's your ancestors,
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: your grandparents,
- 17:45SPEAKER_01: your grandfather's dying wish,
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: your grandmother's unspoken desires,
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: all of those things,
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: finding their way home on this fire,
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: all of those things,
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: all of those things on this fire.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: And I've been thinking about dressing up for Halloween and
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: of the weird and the creature that could be.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: What an honoring of the women who died because they spoke out,
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: the women who died because they did not want to submit to this Christian power that
- 18:32SPEAKER_01: was coming in and claiming land and money and God.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: What an honouring of the weird and the unusual within us.
- 18:46SPEAKER_01: What if we dared for a night or two to just really be weird?
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: What would you wear?
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: What would you dress as?
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: And you went around house to house saying, look at me, this is my ghoulish side.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: This is my strange side.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: We just let ourselves be those things.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: What if?
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: What if?
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: I'm going to dress in a very smart witches outfit tomorrow.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: When I say witches, I'm going to wear...
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: black feathered jacket and a tailored skirt and in my heart I'm going to be knowing
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: that I am dressing as a very successful witch and I'm saying to my inner
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: Which you can be very successful.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: You don't need to be ragged and apologetic or raw or angry or in the edges or secret or hidden.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: I am striding out tomorrow in my witchy finest to celebrate Samhain.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: And then I've got a gig on Friday, a storytelling gig on Friday.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: It's a great place in Glastonbury,
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: thank goodness,
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: because I don't think I could go anywhere else right now.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: And I'm going to dress as Medusa.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: I've got a snakeskin skirt and I've got a snake.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: Unapologetically Medusa.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: And I'm really calling for the...
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: magic and the mystery of Medusa to say can you please support me to move all that's
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: got stuck in me all the ancestral stuff that's got stuck in me all the places that
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: think that there comes a certain point and everything turns to cement all the
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: places that have somehow
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: decided that life is over,
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: that when you're not young,
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: that life solidifies and cements and becomes grey.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: But it doesn't become grey, it becomes white, white, hot.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: I'm really asking you, Medusa, that you can help me to keep...
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: trusting in the movement and trusting in the transformation because i think it's
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: fear that freezes fear that keeps everything stuck and stopped and i'm really
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: asking for you to be gentle and kind and do it in the beauty way medusa i'm really
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: asking that you do that for me
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, interrupting this podcast with a ceremony, with a prayer, as it should be on nights like these.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Let's keep interrupting ourselves to just drop in and check in.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: Are we going where we want to go?
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: Is life kind of taking us in one direction and we haven't?
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: Stopped and taken a breath and checked in.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: Let's stop now.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: Take a breath.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: Check in.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: What's really important to us?
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: What is really, really important to us?
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: This is our one life.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: And when we lie on our deathbed, getting rolled into our coffin, what's important?
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: What's important?
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: Was anything that we worried about?
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: Was any of the tightness or the tension important?
- 23:07SPEAKER_01: Just letting it go.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: Letting it go on this night.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: On this night where the mushrooms are growing and inviting us to be silly and wild
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: and dance and cackle and giggle and play.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: May we reclaim all of that.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: And may we dress like monsters so that the monstrous places in us
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: can feel a little bit more seen really thanking you for listening really hoping that um
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: didn't disturb you too much with my clacking noises.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: Really,
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: life,
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: whoever you are,
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: whatever time of the year you manage to catch this podcast between your teeth,
- 24:25SPEAKER_01: really honouring you,
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: I want you to know that you're enough.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: I want you to know that your beating heart is enough.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: that your breath is enough.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: I want you to know that you are loved.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: There's nothing you need to do or say to be loved.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: There's love all around you.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: There's love underneath you.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: There's love above you.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: I want you to soften into what you need because you can have it.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: You really can have it.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: And it might be a big thing.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: But you know you can find many different ways to elegantly and graciously have it.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: Just keep softening into it.
- 25:34SPEAKER_01: Just keep dreaming into it.
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: Much, much love to you.
