- 0:05Pussycat Dolls left on the shelf.
- 0:08Welcome to Mark and Pete. This is a rather awkward story.
- 0:13Few things are sadder than discovering nostalgia as a
- 0:17strict spending. Limit.
- 0:19Yes, this is Mark and Pete 2 blokes with half an opinion.
- 0:24Now here's our first thought. Help of the flops A musical tour
- 0:29offers so much more with dancing and lights that glisten, but
- 0:34it's a flop for sure if it lacks a lure and nobody turns up to
- 0:38listen. Well, indeed.
- 0:41For many Pussycat Doll fans, you would have noticed that they
- 0:45have had to cancel the some of their worldwide tours.
- 0:48Yes, and this is due to poor ticket sales.
- 0:52Now, Nicole Scherzinger, Ashley Roberts and Kimberly Wyatt
- 0:56announced their return with a new single.
- 0:58This is to basically broad out their appeal.
- 1:02Unfortunately, what seems to have happened is nobody wants to
- 1:06listen. Now, Mr. Pete, I know you're a
- 1:08great fan and I know that we'll talk about some of their hits,
- 1:11which I know that you will sing to your heart's content.
- 1:15But the fact of the matter is, this is slightly embarrassing,
- 1:18isn't it? Yes, well, I am of course a big
- 1:20fan of The Pussycat Dolls and as we are, as I am of every single
- 1:25artist that we mention on this show.
- 1:28I mean they were big earlier this century, weren't they big
- 1:32in the 2000s? They seemed to be everywhere.
- 1:34You couldn't escape them and, and so you would have thought
- 1:38that they would have at least the nostalgia level being, being
- 1:43the power that got people to buy tickets.
- 1:46But apparently nostalgia in itself is not good enough.
- 1:53As you say, we're talking about their major hits later that you
- 1:56would have thought that people would turn up to sing.
- 1:58But it seems like no, you need something more.
- 2:02You can't just rely on people remembering the their enjoyment
- 2:07of the past particularly. I mean, that is quite a long
- 2:10time, isn't it? I mean, there were big 20 years
- 2:13ago. So you know, 15 to 20 years ago.
- 2:16So maybe it's too long. Maybe that's the reason.
- 2:19But with people seeing their or hearing their music on TikTok
- 2:25clips, as I think you'd have thought.
- 2:26So I am surprised actually that they didn't manage the tour.
- 2:31I mean the Bible says all flesh is grass and all the goodliness
- 2:36thereof is as of a flower of the field.
- 2:39That is to say it quickly dies and gets swept away.
- 2:42So sadly that is the case. Your Your youth and popularity
- 2:48doesn't last forever, Mark. Indeed it doesn't.
- 2:52Fortunately it is that I am not on a pop worldwide tour, which
- 2:56many people are. Great relief.
- 2:59Now the group Pussycat Dolls of course are known for a lot of
- 3:02their hits. Now here are some which is
- 3:05buttons. I don't need a man.
- 3:07I'm not talking about me and don't you.
- 3:10Now of course many people will know the Don't You song, which
- 3:12is Don't you think your girlfriend looks hot like me?
- 3:15Not me personally, but. Although that would work, yeah.
- 3:19That would well, I think that probably would have been a
- 3:22bigger hit and, and I possibly even suggest that if we were to
- 3:27offer it on my part, the worldwide tour would probably
- 3:30come back. But the fact is, it's that it is
- 3:32a bit of a concern, isn't it? Because entertainment is going
- 3:35through a lot of challenges aren't there?
- 3:37You know, I mean with people concerned about the the economy
- 3:40and etcetera, is, is this really an economic problem or is it
- 3:46just to your point that maybe they've, they sort of their
- 3:49flavour of music is no longer in vogue?
- 3:53Yes, it can be all those things, but I mean, you have to.
- 3:57The economics needs to be taken into account because it could be
- 3:59just something as simple as this.
- 4:01They may well have sold a lot of tickets, just not enough to pay
- 4:07the absolutely exorbitant costs of all the transport, the
- 4:11staging. I mean, if you're going to go on
- 4:13one of those tours, you need at least 2-4 stages because you've
- 4:17got to have the one ready at your next venue, haven't you?
- 4:19So you've got to, it's a lot of money to put up front and if
- 4:24people may have bought tickets later, I guess an economic
- 4:26decision, we haven't got the money to pay the man.
- 4:30So it it was, it was Paul. So I think that's why
- 4:34particularly as I believe there is one show going on.
- 4:36I don't know if you mentioned that's right.
- 4:37It's the way ho pride in Los Angeles 6th of June folks, so
- 4:41don't don't forget. So, you know, the travelling
- 4:44huge cost, having to have at least two separate sets which go
- 4:50then go on tour expensive so that they've just brought it
- 4:54down to that level. It's not that there's no
- 4:56interest. There just wasn't enough for a
- 4:58world tour. Which you see, I would say if I
- 5:01were a Pussycat Doll, which, you know, I'm not quite, I would
- 5:06think, yes, there's a thought that the, the, the listeners
- 5:10could dwell on now that if I were a Pussycat Doll, I would
- 5:12think, well, it's not that bad. I mean, we're not good enough
- 5:16for a world tour, but maybe we'll have one sell out, sell
- 5:20out performance and that's pretty good in itself.
- 5:25Well, yes, and, and the thing here is, which is quite
- 5:27interesting because obviously each of the different artists
- 5:31that make up the group have had different careers.
- 5:35So obviously Nicole Scherzinger has, has been a, you know, a
- 5:39judge on many sort of pop panels.
- 5:43Umm, she's done things like appearances in films and some of
- 5:47her colleagues have done many sort of placements in acting
- 5:51roles, et cetera. So it's interesting that how
- 5:54some people can turn their hand to other things, not just rely
- 5:58on being a pop artist. But I think that the point here
- 6:02is, is that it does show you that this is a very difficult
- 6:08thing to do, isn't it? Trying to sort of build a
- 6:11worldwide tour, as you say, in a difficult environment, a
- 6:14challenging environment. But what's also interesting is,
- 6:17is can you keep your audience, which is that you have to keep
- 6:21producing material. Now, one of The thing is that
- 6:23I've, I've highlighted a few of their hits, but I don't remember
- 6:26many hits. And that's, that's the other
- 6:28thing, because if you're going to have a following, you've got
- 6:31to have a good catalog. Yeah, I think one of the ways to
- 6:35to picture the problem here is you may well have had some of
- 6:39The Pussycat Dolls hits played at a school disco years ago.
- 6:44Now imagine just having that school disco as a reunion,
- 6:49playing the same music and inviting everyone back who now
- 6:53has back pain and sciatica. You know, it's 20 years for
- 6:57goodness sake. People have moved on and I I
- 6:59think that is part of it. So focusing down on one show
- 7:03might be good enough. And I suppose there is the the
- 7:07fact that the music is available online and that must have some
- 7:11sort of negative effect because people can consume it in that
- 7:14way unless they're real Ultra fans and need to spend the money
- 7:17to get to get to the show. So I think it's this, it's sort
- 7:23of a mixed response to this that I have.
- 7:27Yeah. I think that it is a shame for
- 7:29The Pussycat Dolls. It's not as good as they would
- 7:30like. But with it with all those
- 7:34caveats that we've that we've put in place, it's actually not.
- 7:38They've not done too bad for, you know, a rather bland,
- 7:43plasticky group who sang little ditties.
- 7:46I'm sorry, I'm obviously I'm a big fan.
- 7:48I'm just putting a negative point of view.
- 7:51I think they've done pretty well considering.
- 7:53Let's put it like that. Well, the group has said that it
- 7:56is with sadness in a difficult and heartbreaking decision to
- 8:00cancel the tours. But as far as the Pussycats are
- 8:04concerned, maybe they lost one of their lives.
- 8:07But let's hope that they could be purring again in the future.
