Latest / Foul Territory / Early trade market scenarios + Ken Rosenthal on Buster Posey's Giants decisions, Mets desperation
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Let's get the inside scoop with FT senior insider Ken Rosenthal. Ken,
- 0:09Speaker 1: I'd like to dive into your column on Buster Posey
- 0:12Speaker 1: and the San Francisco Giants. We spent a lot of
- 0:14Speaker 1: time on that trade yesterday. I thought it was fascinating,
- 0:17Speaker 1: But let's focus on San Francisco and push this forward.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Will Buster Posey be making a number of trades if
- 0:23Speaker 1: they continue to go down this path or are many
- 0:26Speaker 1: of their contracts difficult to move?
- 0:30Speaker 2: That's a good.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Question, Scott, and certainly some of their contracts are difficult
- 0:34Speaker 3: to move. Dever is a Domis Chapman.
- 0:37Speaker 2: But Robbie Ray.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Potential free agent. You could move him, and there are
- 0:41Speaker 3: some others as well. I don't expect that they would
- 0:43Speaker 3: entertain anything for Logan Web, but could they do some
- 0:47Speaker 3: things around the edges, Yeah, they could. Harrison Battery's back now,
- 0:51Speaker 3: he's a one year guy. So I don't believe the
- 0:55Speaker 3: Giants are looking at it that way at all. They
- 0:57Speaker 3: are trying to build something and not take something away.
- 1:02Speaker 3: The Patrick Balley trade almost stands alone from that. It's
- 1:05Speaker 3: a different kind of trade. They wanted to open up
- 1:08Speaker 3: playing time for Susak, who's coming off the il and
- 1:11Speaker 3: his Zeus Rodriguez, and frankly, they were fed up with
- 1:14Speaker 3: Patrick Bailly and his inability to hit and some of
- 1:18Speaker 3: the defensive stuff as well. So it wasn't necessarily the
- 1:22Speaker 3: defensive metrics, but just the way he handled the pitching staff.
- 1:25Speaker 3: It was never copasetic necessarily between him and Posey. So
- 1:29Speaker 3: they make the trade, but I don't see that as
- 1:32Speaker 3: any sign that they're going to tear down in any way.
- 1:36Speaker 3: This was simply a move they made in their mind
- 1:39Speaker 3: to get better, and they did get the equivalent of
- 1:41Speaker 3: a number one draft pick for Patrick Bally the twenty
- 1:44Speaker 3: ninth selection overall, so they like the trade.
- 1:50Speaker 4: Ken, Ken, is it too late for the Giants? With
- 1:52Speaker 4: the Dodgers and the Padres doing what they're doing, some
- 1:54Speaker 4: of the other teams in the NL already starting to separate,
- 1:57Speaker 4: the Cubs the Braves, there's basically I mean, you can
- 2:00Speaker 4: almost chalk for playoff teams already. The Brewers are coming, right,
- 2:05Speaker 4: They're probably another one that's gonna be in there. You
- 2:08Speaker 4: figure out the six to one whatever that wildcard might be.
- 2:11Speaker 4: But is it too late already for the Giants? I know,
- 2:13Speaker 4: we're only what may twelfth. But is it already too late?
- 2:16Speaker 4: Have they fallen far up buying Ken Dever is a
- 2:18Speaker 4: damas Chapman get hot enough to make up this deficit?
- 2:23Speaker 3: Agy, I'm reluctant to say it's too late for any team.
- 2:26Speaker 3: With expanded playoffs and the way things work now, You're right,
- 2:30Speaker 3: the National League is more difficult and challenging to make
- 2:33Speaker 3: the playoffs in then it will be in the American
- 2:35Speaker 3: League at least this season. But that said, it is
- 2:40Speaker 3: a situation where Defris has not hit. Starting to hit
- 2:43Speaker 3: now May has been much better than April, a damas.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Maybe he's coming out of it. And last night, when
- 2:49Speaker 3: you watch that game, the way they erupted late against
- 2:52Speaker 3: the Dodgers bullpen and some of the lesser guys in
- 2:55Speaker 3: that bullpen, you can see glimpses of what maybe the
- 2:58Speaker 3: Giants envision themselves being. And this is what maybe some
- 3:01Speaker 3: of us thought they would be, which was a team
- 3:03Speaker 3: that was pretty good offensively, not great, not perfect, but
- 3:07Speaker 3: pretty good and challenge more on the pitching side. With
- 3:11Speaker 3: Logan web right now on the IL, yes, they're challenged
- 3:14Speaker 3: more on the pitching side. They got good work out
- 3:16Speaker 3: of McDonald last night, A call up. So I still
- 3:20Speaker 3: don't see them being a complete enough team, a consistent
- 3:23Speaker 3: enough team to really be in the playoff mix, but
- 3:27Speaker 3: you cannot rule it out. And certainly if Devers becomes
- 3:31Speaker 3: Devors again, then the equation changes, and it's a funny mix.
- 3:35Speaker 3: They've got their top prospect, Bryce Elderg in the major
- 3:38Speaker 3: leagues now, and they're not really going to play him.
- 3:40Speaker 3: They're gonna use him more as a pinch hitter because
- 3:43Speaker 3: they want Devers to play in Casey Schmidt to play,
- 3:46Speaker 3: And of course Chapman and the Dominos are locked in.
- 3:48Speaker 3: So I don't know where it's going, but it's kind
- 3:52Speaker 3: of situation right now where things are tenuous. Put it
- 3:56Speaker 3: that way, it could go basically either way.
- 3:59Speaker 2: You confirm in your article about what I had saw
- 4:02Speaker 2: when I play with Buster Posey, about how he's not
- 4:04Speaker 2: like real keen on the whole way that Major League
- 4:08Speaker 2: Baseball establish or or values catchers with only receiving and
- 4:13Speaker 2: only throwing. He feels like there's other things. Do you
- 4:16Speaker 2: feel like the way that Buster Posey, because he was
- 4:19Speaker 2: instrumental in the Chapman signing even before he was the GM,
- 4:23Speaker 2: do you feel like he's zigging when the rest of
- 4:27Speaker 2: the league is zagging and he's kind of putting his
- 4:30Speaker 2: foot in the ground, is stamp on this team as
- 4:34Speaker 2: this is either gonna work or it's not. And it's
- 4:38Speaker 2: a concerted effort to be different because he thinks this,
- 4:41Speaker 2: thinks this is where the success is.
- 4:45Speaker 3: I don't know that it's a concerted effort to be different,
- 4:47Speaker 3: but certainly he is bold, he is decisive, and he
- 4:51Speaker 3: has put his mark on this team. And as I wrote,
- 4:55Speaker 3: all of their big moves Dever's a domas Tony Vitello
- 4:59Speaker 3: perfectly defended. In a vacuum. You can justify and understand
- 5:03Speaker 3: why each of those moves was made at the same time.
- 5:06Speaker 3: It's got to work, and if it doesn't work, then
- 5:09Speaker 3: of course we're talking about something different entirely, and so far,
- 5:12Speaker 3: at least to this point, it hasn't worked.
- 5:15Speaker 5: So they went.
- 5:16Speaker 3: From a very analytical GM for anxiety to a very
- 5:21Speaker 3: baseballish type GM buster posey. And it's going to be
- 5:25Speaker 3: interesting to see how this all plays out with them,
- 5:27Speaker 3: because they're a team that has the number four pick
- 5:31Speaker 3: in this draft and the number twenty nine pick now
- 5:33Speaker 3: coming over from the trade. They've got some good things
- 5:36Speaker 3: happening in their farm system. And yet, as I ask
- 5:39Speaker 3: in the column, where is this going? And how much
- 5:43Speaker 3: longer will it be before their fans are saying, Okay,
- 5:46Speaker 3: what's next? Because this is a team with one winning
- 5:49Speaker 3: season in the last nine years coming into this season,
- 5:53Speaker 3: and there's a restlessness about this organization and there should
- 5:57Speaker 3: be the Giant should be better than they've been reasons
- 6:00Speaker 3: for We all know that it's always that way in baseball,
- 6:04Speaker 3: but it is time for them to start showing it.
- 6:07Speaker 3: And granted it's only Posey's second full season, but he
- 6:11Speaker 3: has taken some big swings, and as I wrote to
- 6:14Speaker 3: this point, most of those big swings have been more
- 6:17Speaker 3: subtraction than addition. I'm sure you amounted to subtraction by addition.
- 6:24Speaker 3: That's how I should put.
- 6:25Speaker 5: It, Big Dog.
- 6:27Speaker 6: You know how it is, man, We're always hungry, and
- 6:30Speaker 6: how do we get our food? We don't want the
- 6:32Speaker 6: stuff that makes our bellies hurt. We go to Hello Fresh.
- 6:35Speaker 6: We find out specifically what we love to eat. And
- 6:38Speaker 6: guess what, Cratzy, I know it helps you out the household. Wife,
- 6:41Speaker 6: he is happy and the kids are extra happy.
- 6:44Speaker 2: I'm good at two things. Cooking is one of them,
- 6:47Speaker 2: but not trying to choose what we're gonna have. I've
- 6:50Speaker 2: gone fifteen meals so far and they haven't given me
- 6:53Speaker 2: one repeat meal. There's so many to choose from, and
- 6:56Speaker 2: they can make it easy for me.
- 6:57Speaker 6: Yeah, And I think the best part of it is
- 6:59Speaker 6: is for me. I'm very particular. I'm trying new things
- 7:02Speaker 6: and I'm really really liking these things from HelloFresh.

- 7:28Speaker 4: Ken, what was what else was in your article this week?
- 7:30Speaker 4: What else did you write about?
- 7:32Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Aj you got to read it.
- 7:34Speaker 4: Oh, I know, I'm asking. That's why I'm asking you
- 7:35Speaker 4: because it leads to my next question. God, I don't
- 7:40Speaker 4: know what was in the article, so I can't ask
- 7:42Speaker 4: the question. If I don't know what was in the article,
- 7:43Speaker 4: I'm really asking this I'm serious.
- 7:46Speaker 7: This seems like a setup.
- 7:47Speaker 4: No, this is not a setup. It'll get somewhere. Ken
- 7:50Speaker 4: will just answer Scott, why.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Don't we have someone who read the article ask another
- 7:54Speaker 3: question and then we maybe aj can think of a question.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Okay, we're the Mets in your article. That's all I
- 7:58Speaker 4: want to know. No, there was just really it was
- 8:02Speaker 4: just giants.
- 8:03Speaker 3: I just mentioned the Mets in one aspect. Daj I
- 8:06Speaker 3: said that Buster Posey doesn't have the track record David
- 8:09Speaker 3: Stearns does. At least with Sterns. You can point to
- 8:12Speaker 3: what he did in Milwaukee, what he did in twenty
- 8:13Speaker 3: four with the Mets, and know that there is some
- 8:17Speaker 3: foundation there that he has built for his reputation. Buster Posey,
- 8:21Speaker 3: like Vitello, is relatively new to his job, so there's
- 8:26Speaker 3: going to be scrutiny on any person like that. And again,
- 8:31Speaker 3: he has been bold, he has been decisive, and in
- 8:34Speaker 3: this day and age in Major League Baseball, that can
- 8:37Speaker 3: be a separator because there are so many heads of
- 8:40Speaker 3: baseball operations who are risk averse. At the same time, again,
- 8:44Speaker 3: the moves have to work, and we all know no
- 8:48Speaker 3: front office is perfect, and I mentioned that in the article,
- 8:50Speaker 3: and what was so interesting to me about the trade,
- 8:53Speaker 3: and AJ maybe you can ask a question off of this.
- 8:56Speaker 3: What was so interesting was that for the frustrations the
- 8:59Speaker 3: Giant had with Bailly, the Guardians seemed to be rejoicing
- 9:03Speaker 3: overgetting him. Stephen Vote, their manager, said he got text
- 9:07Speaker 3: from eight or nine people with the Giants congratulating him
- 9:11Speaker 3: on the deal. President of Baseball Operations Chris Antonetti mentioned
- 9:14Speaker 3: a conversation he had with Orioles manager Craig Albanez. Now
- 9:17Speaker 3: Craig Albanez was the Giants catching coach for a time
- 9:21Speaker 3: with Patrick Bailey there and then was the Guardian's bench
- 9:23Speaker 3: coach and apparently had been lobbying the Guardians to get
- 9:28Speaker 3: Patrick Bailey. And what Alberinaz said that Antonette was, Oh,
- 9:32Speaker 3: now you get him that I'm gone. So two organizations
- 9:36Speaker 3: looking at this player completely differently, and that is the
- 9:40Speaker 3: beauty of the game. And Bailly certainly is a polarizing guy.
- 9:44Speaker 3: And we'll see how this all turns out.
- 9:47Speaker 4: Okay, now i'll ask my question or I'll have the story.
- 9:50Speaker 4: We actually made a bet that your column this week
- 9:52Speaker 4: would be on the Mets or the Diamondbacks. That's why
- 9:54Speaker 4: I asked the question, And since I know I have
- 9:57Speaker 4: not had time to read it, you could have just
- 9:58Speaker 4: answered the question simply, but you decided to go all rampler.
- 10:02Speaker 4: So thank you for the ramp. But basically you yeah,
- 10:06Speaker 4: that was that you would write this week because since
- 10:09Speaker 4: you saw the Mets and the Diamondbacks that your column
- 10:12Speaker 4: this week would be on one of those two teams.
- 10:13Speaker 4: It wasn't. So therefore you lost me like a dollar,
- 10:16Speaker 4: so you owe me a dollar. Can Well my question
- 10:18Speaker 4: now it goes to the Mets. Is the call up
- 10:21Speaker 4: of viewing? Is this just the last thing they have,
- 10:24Speaker 4: the last gasp attempt they're finding some offense all the
- 10:28Speaker 4: moves they've tried to make already, they're moving guys in
- 10:31Speaker 4: lineup Soto to lead off this and that is this
- 10:33Speaker 4: their last gasp attempt to get some offense on this team?
- 10:37Speaker 3: Aja, First of all, I apologize for you losing your bet.
- 10:41Speaker 3: I'll be happy to give you your dollar the next
- 10:42Speaker 3: time I see you. I write according to what I
- 10:45Speaker 3: think is the best story of the day, and I
- 10:47Speaker 3: didn't believe the Mets or the Diamondbacks were the best
- 10:49Speaker 3: story of the day. Now to the point you raise,
- 10:53Speaker 3: and it is a really good one, because where else
- 10:57Speaker 3: do the Mets turn And frankly, they're turning to a
- 11:00Speaker 3: guy here who has played I believe, twelve games of TRIPLEA.
- 11:03Speaker 3: That's it. He is a player who has immense promise.
- 11:08Speaker 3: I spoke with someone last night who said he's not
- 11:10Speaker 3: going to be quite the defender Pete row Armstrong is,
- 11:13Speaker 3: but he believes this is someone who has some knowledge
- 11:17Speaker 3: from the draft of Ajewing. He believes this guy, aj
- 11:20Speaker 3: Ewing will be a better offensive player than Armstrong and
- 11:23Speaker 3: lesser defensively. If that's the guy he is, If that's
- 11:26Speaker 3: the player, he turns out to be big win for
- 11:29Speaker 3: the Mets. That said, teams always will tell you they
- 11:33Speaker 3: never want to bring in a player to be a
- 11:36Speaker 3: savior type person in a losing situation. What are the
- 11:41Speaker 3: Mets doing here? They are asking aj Ewing. They'll deny this,
- 11:44Speaker 3: but they're asking aj Ewing to inject them with some
- 11:47Speaker 3: energy at a time when they are absolutely struggling. And
- 11:50Speaker 3: it is a lot to ask, There's no question, it's
- 11:54Speaker 3: a lot to ask. So is this an act of desperation?
- 11:57Speaker 3: I would say it's pretty dawn near an active deay
- 12:00Speaker 3: inspiration And you can understand it. Aj. We watched the
- 12:03Speaker 3: Mets this weekend and we were not impressed, so I
- 12:07Speaker 3: get it, But it is also a reflection of them
- 12:10Speaker 3: not really having any place else to turn. With so
- 12:13Speaker 3: many players out right now and all teams of injuries.
- 12:17Speaker 3: We know that they're having a particularly bad run, but
- 12:20Speaker 3: at the same time, for three hundred and seventy million,
- 12:23Speaker 3: you would think they would have more options to go to.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Is there any inclination that a move like this is
- 12:30Speaker 2: more of a David Stern's type of move. I get it,
- 12:34Speaker 2: there's injuries. I get it, who's out and you know,
- 12:36Speaker 2: the next guy up type of thing. But David Sterns
- 12:39Speaker 2: has almost been forced to spend money when he's come
- 12:42Speaker 2: to New York. We know that Cohen probably was the
- 12:45Speaker 2: one that pushed through the Juan Soto thing. David Stearns
- 12:48Speaker 2: doesn't really want to spend money on pitchers, and look
- 12:51Speaker 2: at the teams that he had success with. With the Brewers,
- 12:55Speaker 2: they were calling guys up all the time, dropping them
- 12:57Speaker 2: into lineups at different spots, letting them be.
- 13:00Speaker 4: Who they are.
- 13:01Speaker 2: But he was had Luis Robert, he has Francisco Indoor,
- 13:05Speaker 2: He has veterans almost at every position, besides one guy,
- 13:08Speaker 2: Carson benj who he allowed to be there. So is
- 13:11Speaker 2: this Ewing call up more of like a hey, you
- 13:15Speaker 2: know what, it shows all these money guys haven't done
- 13:18Speaker 2: what we'd need him to do. Let's try it the
- 13:20Speaker 2: way that we did it in Milwaukee, or is it
- 13:22Speaker 2: just a eh, he's the next guy, so we'll do it.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Probably a little of both, Eric and yes, this is
- 13:30Speaker 3: the way they did it in Milwaukee, but yes, David
- 13:33Speaker 3: Stearns also recognizes he's not in Milwaukee and he's not
- 13:36Speaker 3: going to run the team the same way. He didn't
- 13:38Speaker 3: take the job anticipating he would run the team the
- 13:41Speaker 3: same way. It's a much different market, a much different situation.
- 13:45Speaker 5: Entirely.
- 13:46Speaker 3: To me, this move is not David Stearns trying to
- 13:49Speaker 3: put his stamp on the Mets as much as what
- 13:52Speaker 3: the heck else can we do at this time? We've
- 13:55Speaker 3: got a lot of deadweight on our roster. Let's try
- 13:57Speaker 3: one of their kids and see how that And there's
- 14:01Speaker 3: no harm in it. You can always send aj Ewing
- 14:03Speaker 3: back down.
- 14:04Speaker 7: And this idea that.
- 14:05Speaker 3: It could damage him permanently. Some people will say this.
- 14:08Speaker 3: In baseball, you bring a kid up and you could
- 14:10Speaker 3: mess him up forever, I guess, but not in the
- 14:13Speaker 3: way the modern game operates. We've seen guys come up
- 14:16Speaker 3: and come down, and maybe the Ajewing is ready, maybe
- 14:19Speaker 3: he isn't, But the Mets feel obviously that this is
- 14:23Speaker 3: someone who can give them a little boost and we'll
- 14:26Speaker 3: see their speed. There's defense, there's some good things about
- 14:29Speaker 3: Ajewing we know already, and again with Carson benj now
- 14:35Speaker 3: settling in, perhaps aj Ewing can take the same kind
- 14:38Speaker 3: of path, though again it is a much quicker route
- 14:41Speaker 3: to the major leagues.
- 14:43Speaker 4: Ken, do we have a update on Francisco Lindor. I
- 14:47Speaker 4: know we kind of asked Mindy on Saturday and he
- 14:49Speaker 4: kind of gave us the I don't really know, but
- 14:51Speaker 4: have you heard anything more other than that? Or Luise
- 14:53Speaker 4: Robert for that matter.
- 14:55Speaker 3: Their expectation on Lindor is June, and I'm not sure
- 14:59Speaker 3: exactly what in June, but he's not that close and
- 15:02Speaker 3: Luis Robert Junior and Polanco they're supposedly closer, but each
- 15:07Speaker 3: of them is not exactly moving at a rapid pace.
- 15:10Speaker 3: I believe Polanco it's possible this homestand or at least
- 15:14Speaker 3: that's what they were saying while we were in Arizona.
- 15:16Speaker 3: I don't know if that's changed, and Robert would be
- 15:19Speaker 3: after that. But again, I don't know that you can
- 15:23Speaker 3: put timetables on these guys when they've had injury histories
- 15:27Speaker 3: and they don't seem to get healthy quickly. It's a
- 15:30Speaker 3: problem for the Mets in part because they've also lost
- 15:33Speaker 3: some of their depth guys. They lost the shortstop behind
- 15:35Speaker 3: the door, Ronnie Maurizio. They lost two outfielders that really
- 15:39Speaker 3: would be helping them right now and would prevent them
- 15:42Speaker 3: from signing or bringing up aj Ewing. I'm talking about
- 15:45Speaker 3: Talkman and Jared Young. So this is where they are.
- 15:50Speaker 3: It's not a great spot to be in. But at
- 15:52Speaker 3: the same time, they've got to battle through it. No
- 15:54Speaker 3: one's going to feel sorry for them, and no one should.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Yeah, and a couple of those guys, Polanco and Robert
- 16:01Speaker 1: have had injury history for a while now, so you
- 16:04Speaker 1: know that was part of this where you're replacing some
- 16:07Speaker 1: guys and you feel like they're a better fit for
- 16:09Speaker 1: the team, but they're much more injury prone. I liked
- 16:12Speaker 1: your line on fair territory the other day. Ken you
- 16:15Speaker 1: said you watched a lineup on what was it Saturday
- 16:19Speaker 1: or Sunday that had a little split squad feel.
- 16:21Speaker 7: To it with the bottom of it.
- 16:23Speaker 1: I mean, that is rough when you look at a
- 16:26Speaker 1: team that's at you know, three seventy mil and second
- 16:29Speaker 1: highest payroll in the game on a day when apparently
- 16:33Speaker 1: collective bargaining chitter chatter is going to start too.
- 16:37Speaker 7: So how fitting it is fitting?
- 16:41Speaker 3: And yes, Evan Drelich just reported that the two sides,
- 16:45Speaker 3: the Union and the league, meant for the first time today.
- 16:48Speaker 3: It's called opening presentations. It's not a situation where offers
- 16:53Speaker 3: are getting exchanged or ideas are getting exchanged. It's just
- 16:57Speaker 3: here's what we think of where the game is, and
- 16:59Speaker 3: here's what you think of where the game is, and
- 17:01Speaker 3: go from there. Again, they will talk numerous times before
- 17:05Speaker 3: we get to the December first expiration of the CBA.
- 17:08Speaker 3: I don't expect anything serious to happen until maybe November,
- 17:13Speaker 3: and even then it might be a lot of fainting
- 17:16Speaker 3: and jabbing, because it seems like we're going to need
- 17:19Speaker 3: a lockout, or we're going to get a lockout in
- 17:22Speaker 3: order for these two sides get serious.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, it seems like they're into that rack
- 17:28Speaker 1: up those lawyer hours, the whole deal. We'll be talking
- 17:31Speaker 1: about it, so we'll see what happens. Ken, good stuff.
- 17:33Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Catch you later in the week, and you know I'll
- 17:36Speaker 1: be on every single word of every column you put
- 17:38Speaker 1: out there. Even if your best friend AJ isn't.
- 17:43Speaker 4: You didn't invite me over for dinner, I would have
- 17:45Speaker 4: read it.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Well, he's going to give you a one dollar dinner
- 17:48Speaker 1: because he owes you a dollar. He's going to give
- 17:50Speaker 1: you what a dollar slice in New York next time
- 17:52Speaker 1: you guys meet.
- 17:53Speaker 7: How's that right? Thanks? AJ?
- 17:56Speaker 3: Good talking always.
- 17:58Speaker 4: Yep, thank you, that's reading.
- 18:01Speaker 1: See you Fair Territory by the way back on Thursday.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Oh do you know who's hosting fair Territory on Thursday?
- 18:09Speaker 1: I have no idea, me, me and Ken and I

- 18:18Speaker 1: so I'll take over with Kenny find a gainzel. Oh
- 18:22Speaker 1: is that coming up? That's in the next couple of days,
- 18:26Speaker 1: so that is probably what she's doing. Yeah, probably, Yeah,
- 18:28Speaker 1: there you go, so I will take over since I
- 18:31Speaker 1: don't I do not follow Morgan Wall, you and Alana

- 18:57Speaker 2: I'm bougie that way.
- 18:59Speaker 6: Of course, you aren't guess what. You have a big family,

- 19:45Speaker 1: Hey, we're heading in the weeds and it's presented by
- 19:47Speaker 1: MLB Perfect Inning twenty six. Let's talk trades now. You
- 19:53Speaker 1: might say the deadline's three months away. We're a quarter
- 19:56Speaker 1: into the season.
- 19:57Speaker 7: That's cool.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Some teams do make early t Are there a ton
- 20:01Speaker 1: of trades in early may not necessarily, but I think
- 20:04Speaker 1: the way to look at it is Bob Nightingoe article
- 20:07Speaker 1: says five teams to watch as executives weigh in on
- 20:11Speaker 1: wild scenarios. So he spoke to scouts and quite a
- 20:14Speaker 1: few execs, including GMS, about what's going on. And here
- 20:18Speaker 1: are the five teams that he came up with that
- 20:20Speaker 1: you should keep an eye on in terms of trading
- 20:22Speaker 1: players away if things go down a bad path. Most
- 20:26Speaker 1: of them are obvious Mets Giants. I'd like to start
- 20:30Speaker 1: with the Astros. These two are less obvious, Diamondbacks Tigers.
- 20:34Speaker 1: I don't really see that one as much. He more
- 20:36Speaker 1: included them to talk about Schooble. I'd like to start
- 20:39Speaker 1: with the Astros. Ajay, we're not used to this. Jim Crane,
- 20:43Speaker 1: the owner of the team, is one of the more
- 20:44Speaker 1: competitive owners in baseball, so I'm not sure how much
- 20:47Speaker 1: he is willing to deal, and most of their impact
- 20:52Speaker 1: pieces are not free agents after this year. The only
- 20:56Speaker 1: one that could be from the list I'm looking at
- 20:59Speaker 1: is Esak Paratus, but his option next year is thirteen mil.
- 21:02Speaker 7: That'll probably get picked up.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Besides that, you've got Jeremy Payne, Josh Hayter, Christian Walker.
- 21:09Speaker 1: He even this is where the story picks up steam.
- 21:11Speaker 1: He threw Jordon Alvarez his name in there. The Astros
- 21:14Speaker 1: are not trading Jordon, but he said they'll get calls.
- 21:17Speaker 4: They could get a Hall for him, though.
- 21:18Speaker 1: He said one executive told him told Bob, if they
- 21:22Speaker 1: trade yourd on, they would get a better package than
- 21:25Speaker 1: what the Nationals got for Juan Soto. That deal included
- 21:31Speaker 1: Mackenzie Gore, James Woods, j Abrams.
- 21:34Speaker 4: I know that's those are three pretty good players. All
- 21:38Speaker 4: look at the contract.
- 21:40Speaker 2: His contract, I mean to be a top five hitter
- 21:42Speaker 2: in the game. That's a that's a massive halt, He adds,
- 21:47Speaker 2: he is Ultimately he is landing in every team except
- 21:50Speaker 2: for the Dodgers three spot in the lineup, and a
- 21:53Speaker 2: Dodgers would probably be in on trading for Jordon Alvarez,
- 21:56Speaker 2: except they already have a DH, so they won't.
- 22:00Speaker 1: I actually have another one coming up through the miners.
- 22:03Speaker 1: They call Minie Jordon Josea Paola. I'm getting off topic,
- 22:06Speaker 1: but with the Astros, they're ten games under five hundred
- 22:09Speaker 1: as we're talking about them. If they continue on this path,
- 22:13Speaker 1: they will make a few deals. I don't know if
- 22:15Speaker 1: they'll be super active because it has to match up.
- 22:17Speaker 1: It has to be a team that actually has pieces
- 22:20Speaker 1: to move.
- 22:21Speaker 2: But would they would they make a massive deal with
- 22:25Speaker 2: somebody who's willing to eat some of somebody else's contract
- 22:29Speaker 2: in a sense, not Jordon. I don't think Jordon's going anywhere.
- 22:32Speaker 2: I think he's Him and Altuve are probably the untouchable.
- 22:36Speaker 2: But would they say, okay, Issa Parades, who you would have?
- 22:40Speaker 2: You would have him for the next year also, so
- 22:42Speaker 2: it'll be, you know, a nice that would be a
- 22:44Speaker 2: nice piece for a team, and then say, but you
- 22:48Speaker 2: got to take hater's contract with it.
- 22:53Speaker 4: Yeah, that's that's going to happen. That's what's going to happen.
- 22:57Speaker 4: I don't see him trading any of these guys though.
- 22:59Speaker 4: I don't see him trading pain because they're still trying
- 23:01Speaker 4: to win. They're not It's not like they've just given
- 23:03Speaker 4: up unless the askers have just completed. And if they
- 23:06Speaker 4: have them, they can have a lot of pieces they
- 23:07Speaker 4: could sell and get a lot back and restart the organization.
- 23:11Speaker 4: If you can trade, If you can trade, I mean
- 23:13Speaker 4: you can start trading. You can go full twins to
- 23:14Speaker 4: trade Peina Alvarez hater. You could trade a lot of
- 23:18Speaker 4: guys and get stuff back for him.
- 23:20Speaker 1: They won't do all of that, but can you reset
- 23:22Speaker 1: with one or two. Remember this offseason they were shopping
- 23:24Speaker 1: Christian Walker. Now he's hitting. If you really want to
- 23:26Speaker 1: move him, now would be the time.
- 23:29Speaker 4: But they also thought they had Korea and they could
- 23:30Speaker 4: put parades at first.
- 23:31Speaker 1: Now they don't have that option, right, but he's so
- 23:33Speaker 1: he's back next year. I'm saying if they end up
- 23:36Speaker 1: fifteen games under five hundred and if right now, that's
- 23:39Speaker 1: what I'm saying. But it worked, Like, dude, if we're
- 23:42Speaker 1: at June first and you're fifteen games under five hundred,
- 23:44Speaker 1: guess what, you're not making the playoffs. Even ten games
- 23:47Speaker 1: under five hundred, we're probably not making the playoffs. So
- 23:51Speaker 1: you could trade Christian Walker at that point, sell at
- 23:55Speaker 1: a good spot.
- 23:56Speaker 7: Korea should be back next year.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Paratus could be back for them at thirteen mil, and
- 24:01Speaker 1: then there you got rid of your logjam. That number
- 24:04Speaker 1: was much of a problem. So that's one. Who would
- 24:07Speaker 1: you like to go with next Metzer Giants?
- 24:12Speaker 4: Giants don't have anybody tradable, so let's not even go there.
- 24:14Speaker 7: No, they do. Who Robbie Ray free agent after this year?
- 24:19Speaker 4: I feel like that's a given values. I don't feel
- 24:23Speaker 4: like his value.
- 24:23Speaker 7: Is that high playoff pitcher.
- 24:26Speaker 4: Yeah, but right he's pitching Game three Jimmy Jack to
- 24:29Speaker 4: Jordan in the playoffs.
- 24:31Speaker 7: It was a while ago, and wasn't he had a
- 24:32Speaker 7: bullpen for that?
- 24:34Speaker 4: Yeah? But I just I don't know the team's trust.
- 24:37Speaker 4: Hear the teams trust him? Really? You know you trust
- 24:40Speaker 4: Robbie Ray crowds I do. I do.
- 24:43Speaker 2: I do because of the fact that I think he is,
- 24:46Speaker 2: what like two and a half years now off of
- 24:49Speaker 2: Tommy John. I think his I think his stuff plays.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Is he a number one starter for your playoffs? Absolutely not?
- 24:56Speaker 2: Can he pitch? Can he be at number three? Like
- 24:59Speaker 2: I would have to think of a specific team. But
- 25:02Speaker 2: I would trust him because Game three you're gonna have
- 25:05Speaker 2: an off day. So I want Robbie Ray to throw
- 25:09Speaker 2: his four best innings for me. Let's split this way.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Padres pick up I know it's in the division, so
- 25:14Speaker 2: it may not happen. Padres pick up Robbi Ray to
- 25:17Speaker 2: be their number three guy in that rotation. He gives
- 25:20Speaker 2: me four innings of grunt and fastballs, and I don't
- 25:24Speaker 2: give them a chance to come back through the lineup
- 25:27Speaker 2: to be like, okay, now that's straight fastball. I'm a
- 25:31Speaker 2: I'm on time. I popped the first few up. I
- 25:33Speaker 2: swung and miss at the first few. Now I'm on
- 25:35Speaker 2: time for it, and boom, you go right to that bullpen.
- 25:38Speaker 2: I think his I think his value is huge on
- 25:40Speaker 2: a team like the Padres because you don't need six
- 25:43Speaker 2: out of him, You don't even need five out of him.
- 25:45Speaker 2: You can have him grunt and snort and punch out
- 25:48Speaker 2: six in the first four innings and then you're done.
- 25:52Speaker 1: The Cubs are gonna call about anybody that can pitch
- 25:55Speaker 1: a playoff game at well, that's the more interesting.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Trate him trading.
- 26:02Speaker 4: Vadera's two year deal. Still we're talking about the Astros
- 26:08Speaker 4: trading guys. You get more value out of a guy
- 26:09Speaker 4: with another.
- 26:10Speaker 7: Year arise, We haven't.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Talked about that, I know, but we haven't talked about
- 26:16Speaker 1: this much. And I think he's a better playoff performance.
- 26:18Speaker 1: You need somebody to make contact if you've got enough
- 26:21Speaker 1: pop in the lineup his defense, I don't even understand it.
- 26:27Speaker 1: We need to bring Ron Washington back on the show
- 26:29Speaker 1: and be like, what the hell did you do? Yeah,
- 26:33Speaker 1: I've watched him and the metrics back at us last night.
- 26:37Speaker 4: He's been doing it all to his left and set
- 26:39Speaker 4: his feet and freaking made a nice throw.
- 26:41Speaker 1: All year, he hasn't completely transformed himself. It's almost like
- 26:46Speaker 1: nobody was running through defense with him in the past.
- 26:49Speaker 1: And now do you know what his range is on
- 26:51Speaker 1: out above average this year ninth percentile.
- 26:56Speaker 4: He said he wanted to prove he could play defense.
- 27:00Speaker 2: He's doing it, and look where he was. Look where
- 27:04Speaker 2: he was in San Diego. Like, if you put me
- 27:07Speaker 2: with all the fastest guys in the world, I'm looking really,
- 27:10Speaker 2: really slow. That's a bad example because I'm slow anyway.
- 27:13Speaker 2: But Luisa Rise had to look had to be on
- 27:17Speaker 2: a team fielding all these guys that are getting great
- 27:20Speaker 2: jumps because they're all shortstops. Every one of them are shortstops.
- 27:23Speaker 2: So maybe it was always in there, and the Padres
- 27:26Speaker 2: were just like, you know, we don't really need to
- 27:29Speaker 2: work on, you know, Manny Machado's jumps, we don't really
- 27:33Speaker 2: need to work on. Jake Croninworth, He's you know, he
- 27:36Speaker 2: was a shortstop coming up through Xander Bogart's was a shortstop.
- 27:39Speaker 2: He could move, and then Tatis was like everybody was
- 27:42Speaker 2: a short stop. So maybe it was just one of
- 27:43Speaker 2: those things that it was always in there, and he's like,
- 27:47Speaker 2: he's a baseball player that I think if you put
- 27:50Speaker 2: everybody in a showcase, showcases that like the kids go
- 27:53Speaker 2: to now Luisa Rise doesn't get picked, but he you know,
- 27:58Speaker 2: he's clearly getting the job done at above average pace.
- 28:02Speaker 1: If they stink they're going to trade him, Mets center
- 28:05Speaker 1: of attention, but.
- 28:08Speaker 4: He's got to go to a team and has small
- 28:10Speaker 4: crowds because the crowds in York are two week one.
- 28:12Speaker 4: That's why he got hurt.
- 28:13Speaker 7: He means mediums, maybe medium crowds.
- 28:16Speaker 2: It's great if he came out, ye huh, that'd be
- 28:20Speaker 2: great if he came out and said that he's like, oh,
- 28:22Speaker 2: it's so much better with crowds. There was no crowds
- 28:24Speaker 2: there and now if he would say, oh, the pressure
- 28:26Speaker 2: of the crowds is just too much, he won't say that,
- 28:28Speaker 2: but that would have been great. Now, nobody, there's no
- 28:31Speaker 2: value to Luis Robert, no value. Sorry, he's not getting traded, okay.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Freddie Peralta and Clay Holmes are the obvious ones.
- 28:39Speaker 4: Those two would both get you could get you a.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Lot yep there and then the one I have a
- 28:45Speaker 1: question on for you guys is Boba Schett three years,
- 28:48Speaker 1: one hundred and twenty six mil. Two opt outs too
- 28:51Speaker 1: much money right now?
- 28:52Speaker 4: Right because right now the Mets are going to opt out.
- 28:56Speaker 7: They want him to opt out.
- 28:57Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, who's I mean?
- 29:01Speaker 7: How great would it be for it's too much money?
- 29:04Speaker 4: Too much money?
- 29:06Speaker 2: How great would it be for for Freddy p who
- 29:09Speaker 2: right now will get a qualifying offer because he was
- 29:11Speaker 2: traded before the season. He's not going to get a
- 29:15Speaker 2: qualifying offer if he gets traded. As to me, it
- 29:17Speaker 2: looks like like, how how do the Mets keep him
- 29:20Speaker 2: if they don't turn this around like massively unless sign
- 29:23Speaker 2: an extension?
- 29:25Speaker 1: Right, but we haven't heard it yet, so I'm not
- 29:28Speaker 1: buying that one so quick.
- 29:29Speaker 4: Clay Holmes is he can opt.
- 29:31Speaker 7: Out, right, he's definitely going as long as he's get healthy.
- 29:34Speaker 7: I mean it's like twelve mil's.
- 29:36Speaker 2: He's gone a qualifying offer though, So if he gets traded,
- 29:40Speaker 2: if he gets traded, no qualifying offer.
- 29:44Speaker 1: Yeah, they're both begging to be traded. They're going to
- 29:46Speaker 1: make way more money if they get traded.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Yes, exactly, they're sabotaging that clubhouse. So they get traded,
- 29:51Speaker 2: They're not, they're not more soaking out.
- 29:54Speaker 5: I know.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Two more at the finish line here, because these were
- 29:57Speaker 1: the ones that were in here in a different way.
- 30:00Speaker 1: One is the Tigers just based on them off to
- 30:02Speaker 1: an as start and seeing where Schooble's at. But the
- 30:05Speaker 1: concept that was written about here is you know, if
- 30:07Speaker 1: Scooble somehow comes back or it's not working for him
- 30:10Speaker 1: and the Tigers fall out, well then you're not trading
- 30:11Speaker 1: Schooble because he didn't have the same value there. If
- 30:14Speaker 1: he comes back and he shoves, Tigers are probably gonna
- 30:16Speaker 1: be relevant. So most of the exacts, like one GM
- 30:19Speaker 1: in this story was quoted saying too much invested, don't
- 30:22Speaker 1: see it happening, the whole Schooble thing, and he just
- 30:25Speaker 1: got the nanosk or what is the nanoscope that Scott
- 30:28Speaker 1: Boris talked about? Less invasive. Boras said, it's basically like
- 30:31Speaker 1: receiving a shot. So when some people thought it would
- 30:35Speaker 1: be two or even three months for Schooble, the target
- 30:38Speaker 1: returned for him in his mind and his representation's mind,
- 30:41Speaker 1: sounds more like perhaps June, which would be great.
- 30:46Speaker 7: So anyway, I.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Don't think they're worth taking much time on. I'm going
- 30:48Speaker 1: to skip even asking you guys, here's the last one.
- 30:50Speaker 4: Tigers aren't trading, but they're in the now Central They're alive.
- 30:53Speaker 4: They were up fifteen games last year and lost the division.
- 30:55Speaker 1: They know how you can have Yes, Diamondbacks waited until
- 30:59Speaker 1: the last year and then had Naylor, Gino, Meryl Kelly
- 31:05Speaker 1: get alive.
- 31:05Speaker 4: Though right now they're twenty and twenty twenty one and
- 31:09Speaker 4: whatever it is, twenty they're five hundred right now, I
- 31:12Speaker 4: look at them, who do they have? Gallon would be
- 31:14Speaker 4: the obvious one.
- 31:16Speaker 7: Yeah, Meryl Kelly.
- 31:17Speaker 4: Again, didn't he sign a multi year deal?
- 31:19Speaker 1: He did so he could keep him. Nelson, although he's
- 31:22Speaker 1: got a pitch better. Here's the big one, or there's
- 31:24Speaker 1: two big ones, Mike I could tell no. Mike Soroka
- 31:28Speaker 1: was dealing again last night at six and two thirds.
- 31:31Speaker 1: You could trade see Walts, who's been awesome for them,
- 31:34Speaker 1: hasn't loved it.
- 31:35Speaker 4: By the way, he was making me laugh so hard
- 31:38Speaker 4: on Saturday when I was talking. I was talking to
- 31:40Speaker 4: him and Ginkle and uh someone else using wall was
- 31:44Speaker 4: making me laugh so hard. He said something about taking
- 31:48Speaker 4: my shirt off, and I was like, I don't want
- 31:49Speaker 4: to embarrass all you pictures if I take my shirt
- 31:51Speaker 4: off front of the current players. And Ken was standing there,
- 31:53Speaker 4: I'm like, why don't we get Ken to take his shirt?
- 31:55Speaker 7: Oh gosh, Ken probably scurry it out. Oh yeah, he
- 31:58Speaker 7: did not part of that combo.
- 32:00Speaker 4: But I love well he was.
- 32:01Speaker 5: He was.
- 32:02Speaker 4: He's great, So that's just a great guy.
- 32:04Speaker 1: The point here is I think the Diamondbacks are going
- 32:06Speaker 1: to be in the mix because their hitter.
- 32:08Speaker 7: We talked about the.
- 32:09Speaker 4: Silar is, why wouldn't the Diamondacks try to add something?
- 32:11Speaker 7: Well, it just depends where they're at.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Last year, remember he waited till the buzzer and he
- 32:14Speaker 1: was like, Eh, it's not really happening, got it. This year,
- 32:17Speaker 1: it's more of just the hypothetical. We went over a
- 32:20Speaker 1: number of arms that they could deal. There's one more
- 32:22Speaker 1: to Edward Rodriguez, this sounds really good.
- 32:25Speaker 4: Is a free agent?
- 32:26Speaker 7: Not even close? Actually?
- 32:27Speaker 4: Oh really?
