- 1:12Speaker 6: To your citizens, we have a movie meltdown.
- 1:15Speaker 4: Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit amphetamines.
- 1:22Speaker 8: Way down among Brazilians, coffee beans grow by the billions.
- 1:26Speaker 8: So they've got to find those extra cups to fill.
- 1:31Speaker 8: They got an awful lot of coffee in Brazil.
- 1:36Speaker 1: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian.
- 1:39Speaker 7: I'm Fred. I'm Greg.
- 1:41Speaker 1: And we are back with another episode of The Caffeinated
- 1:43Speaker 1: Movie Geek.
- 1:44Speaker 7: Cappuccino on my butt. I still drink coffee.
- 1:48Speaker 9: The last fucking thing you need is another cup of coffee.
- 1:52Speaker 5: It's time for The Caffeinated Movie Geek.
- 1:55Speaker 1: We are coming to you live via digital recording from
- 1:57Speaker 1: Nancy's Bagel Grounds where we get together, drink coffee, and
- 2:00Speaker 1: yammer on for hours on end about movies. Sometimes not
- 2:04Speaker 1: even the movies we're supposed to be talking about.
- 2:07Speaker 7: Okay, so.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Last week, I was promised a harmonized version of the
- 2:14Speaker 1: coffee we're drinking. So, gentlemen, I ask you, what blend
- 2:18Speaker 1: of coffee are we drinking this week?
- 2:21Speaker 4: Thundermark!
- 2:25Speaker 1: That was way better than I expected, actually. It's pretty impressive.
- 2:29Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:32Speaker 4: We do a little barbershop quartet thing on Thursdays.
- 2:37Speaker 7: The We Don't Need Barber barbershop quartet.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Oh, wow.
- 2:45Speaker 7: It's a duet.
- 2:49Speaker 1: A barbershop duet.
- 2:53Speaker 4: Actually, it's in the old tradition of the barber surgeons.
- 2:58Speaker 4: It used to be barber, they would cut your hair,
- 3:00Speaker 4: and they could also take out your liver or something. Sure,
- 3:02Speaker 4: a good one.
- 3:03Speaker 7: And that's why they.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Have that bloodletting thing.
- 3:05Speaker 7: Right, on the pole.
- 3:08Speaker 4: So, yeah, not a lot of barbering going on, mostly
- 3:11Speaker 4: the surgery.
- 3:12Speaker 7: Right. Fred actually introduced me to leeches last week.
- 3:17Speaker 4: That's why you've got those all over you, Ed.
- 3:20Speaker 1: I thought you just really like stand by me.
- 3:22Speaker 4: You know, they've discovered, I'm not kidding, they've discovered that
- 3:25Speaker 4: leeches really do have some sort of like property that
- 3:28Speaker 4: nothing else in the world, like a painkilling thing. There
- 3:32Speaker 4: had to be something that made people that stupid. Right.
- 3:35Speaker 4: But there was like some sort of painkiller or some
- 3:39Speaker 4: sort of palliative helpful thing that they're studying trying to.
- 3:45Speaker 1: I mean, most of that stuff came from nature in
- 3:48Speaker 1: one form or another. So, you know, I can, yeah, sure, leeches.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Why not? I like them.
- 3:54Speaker 7: Just drink more coffee. In the bath.
- 3:57Speaker 10: Right.
- 3:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:59Speaker 5: All right.
- 4:00Speaker 1: So from leeches, we will go to this week's geek activities.
- 4:03Speaker 1: So you guys get to go. So you can pick
- 4:05Speaker 1: who goes first.
- 4:07Speaker 7: Go ahead.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Okay.
- 4:09Speaker 7: Well, I'll go.
- 4:09Speaker 4: I've seen a lot of movies.
- 4:13Speaker 6: Go ahead.
- 4:14Speaker 4: So many that I kind of forget some of them.
- 4:17Speaker 4: I had to try to think of some of the
- 4:19Speaker 4: movies I've seen. I wanted to start out because we
- 4:23Speaker 4: watched The Orphanage, and that was like a really great
- 4:27Speaker 4: experience because I don't really like a lot of ghost
- 4:30Speaker 4: or horror movies.
- 4:31Speaker 1: I don't really like kids.
- 4:33Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't like kids.
- 4:35Speaker 4: But, you know, dead kids are okay.
- 4:37Speaker 7: Yeah, sure.
- 4:37Speaker 4: That makes it tolerable. But the thing for that movie
- 4:41Speaker 4: about me that was so great about the ending.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Do we need a spoiler on this?
- 4:47Speaker 7: Well, yeah.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Okay.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Yeah, we do.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Extra spoiler alert.
- 4:52Speaker 7: It's like a ghost movie. Yeah, no, kind of.
- 4:55Speaker 4: But again, there could be any number of ghosts. They
- 4:58Speaker 4: could pop out.
- 4:59Speaker 7: It could be Casper. It could be, you know.
- 5:03Speaker 1: A fine Christina Ricci.
- 5:04Speaker 4: Who knows when that's coming. Could be.
- 5:06Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 5:07Speaker 7: But the opening shot.
- 5:08Speaker 4: Of it, you know, you watch the opening and there's
- 5:11Speaker 4: this house and there's the, kids at the orphanage and
- 5:16Speaker 4: you don't really see any adults but you see the
- 5:19Speaker 4: laundry hanging out on the line and just my first
- 5:22Speaker 4: impression of it is man wouldn't that be heaven just
- 5:25Speaker 4: to be there and take care of those kids forever
- 5:31Speaker 4: wouldn't it yeah wouldn't it and that's exactly where the
- 5:35Speaker 4: movie goes and when it gets there i'm like wow
- 5:38Speaker 4: that feels right because that comes back To my just
- 5:42Speaker 4: original impression of just a very short little scene, a
- 5:46Speaker 4: little glimpse of life. Yeah, it was a really interesting
- 5:53Speaker 4: and fun movie. For me, and I usually don't like
- 5:59Speaker 4: ghost things outside of Hamlet all that much. They're okay.
- 6:04Speaker 4: I just feel like I've seen so many of them.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Unless there's something different, especially well done.
- 6:12Speaker 1: It depends on what you do with it.
- 6:15Speaker 7: What I appreciated about that is.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Dead kids.
- 6:19Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 6:22Speaker 11: It's one of those things that every scene that you're
- 6:24Speaker 11: going to take time with, every thing that you're going
- 6:27Speaker 11: to take time to let me notice is wonderful. has
- 6:31Speaker 11: a reason why it's in there. It's put in like
- 6:35Speaker 11: a watchmaker builds a watch. Every little thing is coming
- 6:39Speaker 11: back for some reason and you don't have to, you know,
- 6:45Speaker 11: you have to be paying attention, but you, you know,
- 6:48Speaker 11: you're not, you don't have to pick it. Oh, there
- 6:50Speaker 11: was one tiny thing in the back of the scene.
- 6:52Speaker 7: You know, you don't have to do that, but every
- 6:54Speaker 7: scene is important and every part of every scene is important.
- 6:57Speaker 7: And it, um, Yeah, no, it's well made, and there's
- 7:01Speaker 7: a lot of emotions that go through that movie.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:05Speaker 11: There's some place they could have gone, and I was
- 7:08Speaker 11: afraid the first time I was going to see it.
- 7:11Speaker 7: At the end, I thought, no, they're not going there.
- 7:13Speaker 7: They're not going to cop out the way I think
- 7:17Speaker 7: that they're going to do it, and I'm glad they don't. Yeah.
- 7:22Speaker 4: So I saw that. I saw The Future, or End
- 7:26Speaker 4: of July, which is... Fun movie. Lynn didn't like it
- 7:29Speaker 4: very much, but she was sleepy, and I noticed she
- 7:32Speaker 4: tends to dislike movies that keep her awake when she
- 7:35Speaker 4: wants to go to bed. She really didn't like Five
- 7:38Speaker 4: Easy Pieces when she saw that, and I'm like, you
- 7:40Speaker 4: were asleep the entire movie. I didn't like that movie.
- 7:43Speaker 7: You were asleep!
- 7:45Speaker 4: How can you not like a movie? Little warning, I mean,
- 7:49Speaker 4: I'm okay with most content. Violence and sex doesn't bother
- 7:53Speaker 4: me in film, but If you're going to see that
- 7:56Speaker 4: movie and you haven't, there is a sex scene with
- 7:58Speaker 4: Sally Struthers. You might want a heads up going into that.
- 8:04Speaker 4: So we saw the Miranda July movie, and it was good.
- 8:07Speaker 4: My favorite line in it was when Miranda July says,
- 8:11Speaker 4: I wish I was just one notch prettier. Because I
- 8:16Speaker 4: feel like I have to make my case to everyone individually.
- 8:19Speaker 7: And it's like, wow. That's pretty good.
- 8:22Speaker 4: That is very observant. That's true. She is, uh, she's
- 8:27Speaker 4: kind of like that. She does kind of have to
- 8:28Speaker 4: make her case. Um, and, and I liked it. I
- 8:33Speaker 4: thought it was a good movie. Um, it's not the
- 8:35Speaker 4: most fun I've ever had.
- 8:36Speaker 1: In a movie, but it was, it was, they obviously, yeah,
- 8:40Speaker 1: they're not all fun.
- 8:41Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 8:41Speaker 4: We saw, uh, Lynn wanted to see the help cause
- 8:44Speaker 4: she had read the book and, uh, And I went
- 8:49Speaker 4: to get it for a couple of times, and it
- 8:51Speaker 4: was never around.
- 8:52Speaker 1: It's ridiculously popular.
- 8:54Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 8:54Speaker 1: It made a hell of a lot of money in
- 8:55Speaker 1: the theater.
- 8:56Speaker 4: Yeah, so I came back, and I said, well, it
- 8:58Speaker 4: was out. I couldn't get it. So I got another
- 9:01Speaker 4: movie that's really similar, a lot of the same themes,
- 9:05Speaker 4: and maybe you'll like it. It's called Cowboys vs. Aliens.
- 9:10Speaker 4: So we watched that. And that was fun. I'm a
- 9:13Speaker 4: fan of Daniel Craig. I really like him as Bond.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Once you see him as Bond, you kind of feel
- 9:19Speaker 4: like all the other Bonds were kidding about being a badass.
- 9:23Speaker 7: Some of them were.
- 9:25Speaker 4: Yeah, well, you know, he was like.
- 9:28Speaker 7: He was joking about it.
- 9:30Speaker 4: He was like if Johnny Carson was James Bond.
- 9:32Speaker 7: Yeah, he almost thought I had.
- 9:39Speaker 4: Ed McMahon sort of going, hey-o!
- 9:41Speaker 1: That was a great way to take out that guy, sir.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly. So we watched that, and I liked that
- 9:51Speaker 4: pretty well. There are parts of it that are sort
- 9:54Speaker 4: of hokey, like when he has amnesia, and the girl
- 9:58Speaker 4: at the bar who was that 13 yeah that's 13
- 10:02Speaker 4: from house i think was the girl and.
- 10:04Speaker 7: She's like uh.
- 10:07Speaker 4: He doesn't know who he is and she's like i
- 10:09Speaker 4: can help you with my vagina I'm like, what kind
- 10:13Speaker 4: of therapy? I guess. I don't know. There were silly
- 10:15Speaker 4: things in the movie, but it was pretty fun.
- 10:17Speaker 7: Can I get a prescription for that? In a movie
- 10:20Speaker 7: called Cowboys and Aliens, you kind of expect stuff like that.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:25Speaker 4: It was all right, though. But it's kind of funny, too.
- 10:29Speaker 4: Some movies aren't even movies. When Spielberg's involved, it's not
- 10:35Speaker 4: even a movie thing. It's a Spielberg mythology thing. So
- 10:39Speaker 4: you can kind of pick out... that character is sort
- 10:42Speaker 4: of the Richard Dreyfuss guy.
- 10:46Speaker 7: That character is sort.
- 10:47Speaker 4: Of the, you know, you see how Saving Private Ryan,
- 10:52Speaker 4: when he's like shooting at the tank, it's a lot
- 10:55Speaker 4: like Jaws. Yeah, there's just Spielberg mythology that it's kind
- 11:01Speaker 4: of fun to see, like, this is the Spielberg thing.
- 11:05Speaker 4: And I don't know, we had some fun with that conversation,
- 11:09Speaker 4: picking out, So which Spielberg movie is, and who is, okay,
- 11:14Speaker 4: so then who is Harrison Ford? He's Harrison Ford in Spielberg.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Technically, this isn't 100% a Spielberg movie.
- 11:22Speaker 4: Yeah, it isn't, but there's some Spielbergian stuff going on.
- 11:26Speaker 1: It's the same thing with Super 8.
- 11:28Speaker 4: I know.
- 11:28Speaker 1: That's massively Spielberg-esque, and he feels like he had a
- 11:32Speaker 1: little more hand in that one.
- 11:34Speaker 4: I think that was the one that got us started
- 11:37Speaker 4: on the Spielberg mythology game.
- 11:39Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 11:40Speaker 4: And I, again, I don't know. I saw so many movies,
- 11:43Speaker 4: I can't even talk.
- 11:44Speaker 7: About all of them.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Before we totally leave, so did Olivia Wilde say that
- 11:49Speaker 1: to Daniel Craig?
- 11:51Speaker 4: No, she said something like that. It was just, they're
- 11:54Speaker 4: in the bar, she's like, no, I know about, I
- 11:57Speaker 4: can help you. I guess she has alien experience. But
- 12:00Speaker 4: it's kind of a come on, too. So it's kind of,
- 12:03Speaker 4: it comes off like, I can help you. with my vagina.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Cause there's kind of, there's kind of a scene like
- 12:10Speaker 1: that in the girl with the dragon tattoo where somebody
- 12:14Speaker 1: just offers him up that maybe it's just Daniel Craig.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Maybe everywhere he goes, there's just panties dropping.
- 12:20Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 12:23Speaker 1: That's very strange actually. Cause it's very much, Hey, I'm
- 12:26Speaker 1: going to give you this now. So lay down.
- 12:28Speaker 4: There are moments like that in movies that I noticed
- 12:31Speaker 4: that it's like, that's that same beat. From that movie,
- 12:35Speaker 4: that's almost the same line. Like when I watched, well,
- 12:39Speaker 4: you know, if you remember Sex, Lies, and Videotape, there's
- 12:43Speaker 4: a scene where I think Andy McDowell says, is that
- 12:46Speaker 4: how you get off? And he goes, yes. And it's
- 12:51Speaker 4: almost the same beat as in American Beauty when Thora
- 12:55Speaker 4: Birch's friend is going, we're going to go to New
- 12:59Speaker 4: York and we're going to stay with friends. Oh, yeah,
- 13:01Speaker 4: like pot dealer friends. And he's like, Yes. It's the
- 13:05Speaker 4: same beat from a similar pivotal point in another movie.
- 13:11Speaker 4: But yeah, I guess that's going to be one for him.
- 13:14Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Daniel Craig just gets that everywhere he goes.
- 13:16Speaker 4: Actors carry certain moments around with them, just like Spielberg
- 13:20Speaker 4: has his, his mythology. And just like, uh, what do
- 13:25Speaker 4: you feel is the vagina in this scene? What's the
- 13:28Speaker 4: vagina in this scene? And, uh, Oh, and Meryl Streep
- 13:33Speaker 4: always has this non-maternal thing going on.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Kind of.
- 13:37Speaker 4: She's like a conflicted mom. Ever since Sophie's Choice, either
- 13:41Speaker 4: she can't have kids, or she doesn't want to have kids,
- 13:45Speaker 4: or there's some maternal weird, or the dingoes hate her
- 13:49Speaker 4: baby or something.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Yeah, don't you hate when that happens?
- 13:51Speaker 4: Yeah. So there was that, and I watched up. I
- 13:56Speaker 4: can't go into it all that much. I watched up.
- 13:59Speaker 4: The Conversation, which had been meaning to see for a
- 14:02Speaker 4: long time, and everybody says it's so great, and that
- 14:05Speaker 4: makes me not want to watch it. But then it
- 14:09Speaker 4: was the opening thing, like if you get to the
- 14:11Speaker 4: point where the play screen on the DVD is up,
- 14:16Speaker 4: just the space, the workshop is so interesting that it
- 14:19Speaker 4: sucks you in, and you want to watch it and
- 14:22Speaker 4: see what happens. And I watched one of those new
- 14:26Speaker 4: Friends with Benefits kinds of movies recently.
- 14:29Speaker 7: Or interchangeable at this point. I don't know the difference either.
- 14:32Speaker 7: The one with Justin Timberlake. Or was it Ashton Kutcher?
- 14:35Speaker 7: It was Ashton Kutcher.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Sorry about that.
- 14:38Speaker 7: You lost. Wrong choice.
- 14:40Speaker 4: You know that girl, what's her name?
- 14:43Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Oh, okay. I couldn't remember. I was like, is that
- 14:46Speaker 1: one me?
- 14:47Speaker 4: She is not convincingly sexual. Well, I mean, she hasn't...
- 14:52Speaker 4: There's something weird that she was much better cast for
- 14:55Speaker 4: Black Swan.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I was like, she hasn't pulled off, I guess,
- 15:00Speaker 1: is it closer? That's about the only time I can
- 15:02Speaker 1: think of her kind of... And even then, it's very damaged.
- 15:05Speaker 7: That was creepy.
- 15:07Speaker 4: It's almost like the non-maternal quality of Meryl Streep. She
- 15:11Speaker 4: has this... And in this, she's supposed to be openly sexual...
- 15:17Speaker 4: But emotionally unavailable, and she really kind of seems the opposite.
- 15:22Speaker 4: She just doesn't seem... I don't know.
- 15:27Speaker 6: Something's odd about that.
- 15:29Speaker 1: I think it's always been like that, really.
- 15:32Speaker 7: She made that movie.
- 15:34Speaker 4: That's what I was so wrong for. You know who's
- 15:36Speaker 4: wonderful in that, though, is Greta from Greenberg. Her friend
- 15:42Speaker 4: who isn't Kelly from The Office.
- 15:44Speaker 7: The one who's like.
- 15:46Speaker 4: Did you just open the car door for me? I
- 15:49Speaker 4: love that chick. Oh man, there's something about her. She's fun.
- 15:55Speaker 4: In almost exactly the kind of sort of comfortable way that,
- 16:02Speaker 4: what's her name, isn't it? Portman. Natalie Portman.
- 16:06Speaker 7: Yes, Natalie Portman.
- 16:08Speaker 4: Charming as she is.
- 16:09Speaker 7: I think she's too smart.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Ever since she became Queen Amidala, there's almost like a
- 16:14Speaker 1: very safe quality. And that was almost it with George Lucas.
- 16:18Speaker 1: It's like, she seemed like a very non-sexual young actress.
- 16:22Speaker 1: She was very smart. She was very, you know, she,
- 16:24Speaker 1: she could have played this, you know, Queen Amidala character.
- 16:27Speaker 1: And I was like, Oh, at the time it was like, yeah,
- 16:28Speaker 1: that's good casting. And ever since then, it's like, she
- 16:32Speaker 1: does seem to have this very cold, distant, non-sexual.
- 16:37Speaker 7: I don't know. It's like a weird vibe that may.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Stem from her. I don't know. She had a kid,
- 16:41Speaker 1: so obviously she's doing something, but it is weird. She
- 16:45Speaker 1: could have.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Been a barrel for that, though.
- 16:47Speaker 1: You have seen, you know, you have seen that in
- 16:51Speaker 1: her other performances.
- 16:52Speaker 6: Right.
- 16:53Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 16:54Speaker 4: I don't know. So that, you know, that was one
- 16:56Speaker 4: of those movies that's going on. Ashton Kutcher.
- 17:00Speaker 6: Sorry about that.
- 17:01Speaker 4: In the office.
- 17:01Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 17:04Speaker 4: I guess it is what it is. We did see
- 17:08Speaker 4: The Help, and Uh, everybody in my family thought I
- 17:12Speaker 4: was going to hate it because they think I hate,
- 17:15Speaker 4: I don't know. I think they think.
- 17:17Speaker 1: I hate it.
- 17:17Speaker 7: Things they like.
- 17:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:19Speaker 7: I really love this book. Damn it. Now you're going
- 17:21Speaker 7: to hate it. Because Lynn read, uh, Water for Elephants.
- 17:25Speaker 4: And I hated that movie so much, I could not
- 17:28Speaker 4: stop myself from being a dick all the way through it.
- 17:31Speaker 7: Nice. But I couldn't.
- 17:34Speaker 4: Just everything about it, I kept rejecting this.
- 17:38Speaker 13: Oh, what about this? Are you kidding me with that?
- 17:40Speaker 13: What the fuck is that supposed to be? All the
- 17:43Speaker 13: way through the movie. But The Help, no, I could
- 17:47Speaker 13: watch that. That had some really good things. It had
- 17:50Speaker 13: some things that were not good. There were a few
- 17:53Speaker 13: beats like When these two characters say, I'm going to
- 17:56Speaker 13: take care of her, and she's going to take care of.
- 17:59Speaker 4: I'm just like, oh, shut up. You're not supposed to
- 18:01Speaker 4: tell us that.
- 18:03Speaker 7: We're supposed to see that. But it had.
- 18:07Speaker 4: Some things that I really was on board with.
- 18:11Speaker 7: What's turned me away from it, aside from mass acceptance of.
- 18:18Speaker 5: It, I think.
- 18:19Speaker 1: It is a little too popular these days.
- 18:22Speaker 7: It's that movie... And there's been others that... And I
- 18:27Speaker 7: don't know the plot that much. I know basic things
- 18:29Speaker 7: about it. It seems like the movie that's justifying to
- 18:34Speaker 7: especially white women that it's okay that things have happened
- 18:38Speaker 7: racially in the past. It's okay because we're going to
- 18:41Speaker 7: make up this story that we were nice at one point.
- 18:44Speaker 7: It fixes everything. And it's almost an apology. Or reparations
- 18:50Speaker 7: of sorts.
- 18:52Speaker 5: And.
- 18:53Speaker 11: That's what I'm afraid of, and so I'm just kind
- 18:55Speaker 11: of keeping it at arm's length.
- 18:57Speaker 7: Yeah, it is.
- 18:58Speaker 4: It's kind of one of those, but it does have
- 19:04Speaker 4: some nice moments. It does have that weird little editor guy.
- 19:10Speaker 4: And it has that girl. Who is that girl?
- 19:13Speaker 14: Skeeter?
- 19:13Speaker 7: Stone?
- 19:14Speaker 15: What?
- 19:15Speaker 7: Oh, Murphy.
- 19:16Speaker 4: Not Murphy.
- 19:16Speaker 7: Emma Stone. Emma Stone. Yeah.
- 19:19Speaker 1: I really like her.
- 19:19Speaker 7: She's got something going. Yeah. She's a much better actress
- 19:22Speaker 7: than I thought she was going to be.
- 19:23Speaker 1: She was really fun even in, like, Zombieland.
- 19:26Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 19:26Speaker 1: But, yeah, I think now that she's getting a little
- 19:29Speaker 1: better role.
- 19:30Speaker 4: I really like her. I can watch her. I'm on
- 19:33Speaker 4: board with.
- 19:34Speaker 11: I watched her on Saturday Night Live, and it's hard
- 19:37Speaker 11: to watch Saturday Night Live.
- 19:39Speaker 1: It's gotten better lately, but.
- 19:41Speaker 7: And she.
- 19:43Speaker 7: She's funny. like she's she gets it genuinely funny yeah
- 19:47Speaker 7: i've just seen her on like letterman and like.
- 19:50Speaker 1: She really just her the way she sort of conducts
- 19:52Speaker 1: herself as a real person is pretty fun so yeah
- 19:56Speaker 1: i can see her having that.
- 19:57Speaker 4: About her yeah i think that was the thing that
- 20:00Speaker 4: carried me through the movie is i'm i'm just down
- 20:02Speaker 4: with her i can watch her doing stuff yeah um.
- 20:08Speaker 7: Yeah I have a kinship with actresses who have a flaw,
- 20:14Speaker 7: and her slight speech impediment is a flaw that allows
- 20:19Speaker 7: me to have that kinship. So it's fine with me.
- 20:22Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 20:22Speaker 4: It's a little hokey how they put her on as
- 20:25Speaker 4: somebody who's not attractive and can't get a date, when she's, like,
- 20:28Speaker 4: really attractive.
- 20:29Speaker 1: She's ridiculously cute.
- 20:31Speaker 4: She's very attractive.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:34Speaker 7: Yeah, don't you love that?
- 20:36Speaker 1: It's in almost every movie.
- 20:38Speaker 4: Well, and that goes back to theater. That's like the
- 20:40Speaker 4: Glass Menagerie. They always cast the little shy wallflower GIMP
- 20:47Speaker 4: character as she's always the most beautiful person you've ever
- 20:50Speaker 4: seen in your life.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Even in the movie version, Karen Allen, that was when
- 20:54Speaker 1: she was at her prettiest. I mean, yeah, watching that,
- 20:57Speaker 1: I was just like, no, pretty sure you'd have a day.
- 21:00Speaker 1: GIMP or not, you're fine.
- 21:02Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 21:02Speaker 4: I do think maybe Emma Stone is like a woman
- 21:06Speaker 4: that other women don't think of her as all that attractive.
- 21:10Speaker 4: I've heard, like, my daughter is like, I don't think
- 21:13Speaker 4: she's very good looking in this. It's like, are you crazy?
- 21:18Speaker 4: She'd be a terrible lesbian. Yeah, it is a terrible lesbian.
- 21:25Speaker 7: You like guys. Good point.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:30Speaker 7: Total fail. I failed as a lesbian. I failed as
- 21:34Speaker 7: a lesbian. I didn't. I like chicks.
- 21:38Speaker 1: I'm an excellent lesbian.
- 21:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I know. I'm the George Carlin lesbian. I'm a
- 21:44Speaker 4: woman trapped in a man's body, and the woman is
- 21:47Speaker 4: a lesbian.
- 21:48Speaker 7: I still remember the person. Of course I remember the person.
- 21:52Speaker 7: At college I went to right out of high school,
- 21:56Speaker 7: there was a person there that was having a sex change.
- 22:00Speaker 7: so that she could become a lesbian. And it just...
- 22:04Speaker 7: I mean, I get it. I get that you feel
- 22:07Speaker 7: like you're a woman.
- 22:09Speaker 1: There's almost two things going on there, yeah.
- 22:11Speaker 7: But that's a little bit... That's too many huge life
- 22:14Speaker 7: changes all at once.
- 22:16Speaker 1: That's like two separate modes there, and you're kind of
- 22:19Speaker 1: mixing both of them up.
- 22:20Speaker 7: Yeah, just let's knock out one problem first, and then
- 22:25Speaker 7: we'll get to the other. And then see how you
- 22:26Speaker 7: feel about that.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Let's see if you want to move on.
- 22:28Speaker 7: To the next stage. I definitely have no problems with either. But,
- 22:31Speaker 7: you know, you're just getting out of high school. Tackling both.
- 22:34Speaker 7: You're taking your first psychology class. You're, you know.
- 22:38Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 22:39Speaker 1: That's a lot to deal with at once.
- 22:40Speaker 7: Yeah. Let's, one step at a time. Life's long.
- 22:45Speaker 4: So, yeah. So these are the movies I've seen mostly.
- 22:51Speaker 4: We also saw that beautiful movie with an eye.
- 22:54Speaker 7: Bardem.
- 22:55Speaker 4: Yes. Yeah.
- 22:58Speaker 11: I just try to pronounce how it's spelled and think
- 23:02Speaker 11: this is too difficult.
- 23:05Speaker 7: I'm going to stop.
- 23:05Speaker 4: Yeah, that's like... What was that review? It was long, boring, confusing,
- 23:11Speaker 4: and that was just the title. The cook, the thief,
- 23:15Speaker 4: his wife, and her lover.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I kind of agree.
- 23:19Speaker 4: But... What's-Her-Name is naked in it. Helen Mirren is naked
- 23:23Speaker 4: in it. So you can.
- 23:24Speaker 1: You can't argue with that part.
- 23:26Speaker 4: Yeah, it's hard to.
- 23:28Speaker 1: It's a messed up movie.
- 23:29Speaker 7: Yes, it is.
- 23:30Speaker 4: So that's most of what I saw, except for some
- 23:34Speaker 4: things I've already sort of mentioned. The killers and I
- 23:40Speaker 4: saw the hell. The one thing I wanted to say
- 23:42Speaker 4: about the orphanage, though, is it kind of reminded me
- 23:45Speaker 4: of a magic trick. because the ending so corresponded to
- 23:50Speaker 4: my first impression. It's like that trick, and I think
- 23:54Speaker 4: this happened in Beautiful. His kid does one of those
- 23:56Speaker 4: mind games where he says, think of an animal that
- 24:00Speaker 4: begins with I and a country that begins with, and
- 24:03Speaker 4: I don't remember what the example was, but it's like
- 24:06Speaker 4: the one everybody thinks of, so he can guess what
- 24:09Speaker 4: you're thinking, and it's like one of those Kreskin, amazing
- 24:12Speaker 4: Kreskin games, mentalist tricks. Or like the first time I
- 24:18Speaker 4: ever saw David Blaine was when I was driving cross-country
- 24:22Speaker 4: and I just got into a hotel, sat down on
- 24:24Speaker 4: my back, turned on the TV and here's some guy
- 24:27Speaker 4: I'd never heard of and he says, I want you
- 24:28Speaker 4: to pick a card while I flip through this deck.
- 24:30Speaker 4: And I'm like, okay. And I set my suitcase down
- 24:34Speaker 4: and I see a red queen. I don't know if
- 24:38Speaker 4: it was diamond or hearts. And he pulls out a
- 24:41Speaker 4: card And he says, now this isn't your card. And
- 24:43Speaker 4: I'm like, wow, you're good.
- 24:46Speaker 7: You are good. That's not my card.
- 24:48Speaker 4: He says, I want you to look at it and
- 24:50Speaker 4: think of your card. And I'm thinking, I think it
- 24:52Speaker 4: was a die. Bam. There it is.
- 24:54Speaker 7: And I'm like, holy fuck. What just happened here?
- 24:59Speaker 4: And I wanted to go out and knock on other
- 25:02Speaker 4: doors and say, what card did you.
- 25:05Speaker 7: Pick, man? Because I had picked a red queen and bam,
- 25:11Speaker 7: there it was.
- 25:12Speaker 4: But that was what that movie reminds me of. It's
- 25:15Speaker 4: so unified because my first impression is sort of revisited
- 25:20Speaker 4: again at the end, and that's probably more than enough
- 25:23Speaker 4: of my geek week.
- 25:27Speaker 1: We'll take a break and be back with the rest
- 25:29Speaker 1: of our yammering.
- 25:32Speaker 16: It's magic, you know Never believe it's not so It's magic,
- 25:44Speaker 16: you know.
- 25:47Speaker 17: Never believe it's not so I've.
- 25:53Speaker 16: Never been awake I've never seen a daybreak Laying on
- 25:59Speaker 16: my pillow in the morning.
- 26:04Speaker 17: And I stay in bed. Music in my head. And
- 26:08Speaker 17: crazy music playing in the.
- 26:14Speaker 18: Morning.

- 27:15Speaker 7: It's just me.
- 27:15Speaker 20: So, anyway, I'm going to have Odd Dog watch the show.
- 27:19Speaker 7: Hey, look at that.
- 27:21Speaker 1: She's got a fancy dress on.
- 27:22Speaker 7: That would be fantastic. Coming to you soon. Brian by

- 27:48Speaker 7: and I wrapped it around a hot dog. Rupert Popkin.
- 27:51Speaker 1: Mom!
- 27:51Speaker 4: I'm having a show down here.
- 27:58Speaker 7: Keep it down.

- 28:06Speaker 7: The fourth annual Oscar meltdown.
- 28:09Speaker 9: The Academy Awards will never be the same. Choosing a
- 28:15Speaker 9: family movie is tough. It seems like all Hollywood can
- 28:18Speaker 9: do is make mindless drivel that rots kids' brains. Who
- 28:21Speaker 9: wants to see a movie.
- 28:22Speaker 15: Like what my dad watched when he was a kid?
- 28:25Speaker 15: Those films are so boring and the special effects are horrible.
- 28:28Speaker 15: The movies he grew up with are.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Sometimes a big surprise.
- 28:32Speaker 4: I at times feel uncomfortable watching movies I loved when
- 28:35Speaker 4: I was younger with my own kids because I forgot
- 28:37Speaker 4: how much cursing, sex, and violence they showed back then.
- 28:40Speaker 15: All we want to do is watch a fun movie
- 28:42Speaker 15: that we all like.
- 28:44Speaker 9: That's why we created Family Movie Night, a podcast where
- 28:47Speaker 9: we review movies from an adult perspective.
- 28:50Speaker 15: And from a kid's perspective.

- 30:27Speaker 5: Problem, you know. You haven't seen enough movies.
- 30:30Speaker 1: All of life's riddles are answered in the movies.

- 30:46Speaker 20: Go away from my window.
- 30:51Speaker 5: Leave at your own chosen.
- 30:54Speaker 20: Speed I'm not the one you want, babe I'm not
- 31:04Speaker 20: the one you need.
- 31:10Speaker 21: You say you're looking for someone Never weak, but always strong.
- 31:19Speaker 21: To protect you and defend you.
- 31:29Speaker 20: Someone told me each and every door, but it ain't me, babe.
- 31:37Speaker 17: No, no, no, it ain't.
- 31:40Speaker 21: Me, babe. It ain't me you're looking for, babe.
- 31:47Speaker 11: If NPR knows who I am, good lord, I'd be honored.
- 31:52Speaker 7: I would. Fuck those guys. They get funding.
- 31:55Speaker 4: One thing I remember on Fresh Air on NPR.
- 31:59Speaker 4: It was Jeremy Irons talking about how he played guitar.
- 32:05Speaker 4: And Terry Gross sort of perked up at it. And
- 32:09Speaker 4: I could tell already. I already knew she played guitar. Yeah.
- 32:12Speaker 4: Because she had interviewed, what's his name from the Talking Heads?
- 32:16Speaker 10: Bernie?
- 32:16Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:18Speaker 4: And he was talking about how he learned to play.
- 32:22Speaker 4: He started out playing ukulele until he left it in
- 32:24Speaker 4: the back of his car, and it melted because it
- 32:26Speaker 4: was plastic. But he learned from Mel Bay's books, and
- 32:29Speaker 4: she started laughing. And it's like nobody would laugh at
- 32:33Speaker 4: that unless they had done the... So I knew she
- 32:37Speaker 4: played guitar, but then... So Jeremy Irons was on. He
- 32:41Speaker 4: was talking about how he liked to play guitar. It
- 32:43Speaker 4: was something he liked to do. And she was like, oh, really?
- 32:47Speaker 7: Really?
- 32:47Speaker 4: What are you playing? And he goes, oh, mostly Bob Dylan.
- 32:50Speaker 4: And I'm like, God, I wish I could hear that.
- 32:54Speaker 4: I wish I could hear Jeremy Irons does Bob Dylan.
- 33:00Speaker 4: It isn't you, babe. No, no, no, it isn't you, babe.
- 33:05Speaker 6: I don't know why that popped into my head.
- 33:08Speaker 7: Blowing in the wind. Blowing in the wind. I had
- 33:13Speaker 7: a Mel Bay book. When I got my first guitar,
- 33:16Speaker 7: it was a hand-me-down, and I never got past page
- 33:19Speaker 7: one with it. I can play guitar, but it was
- 33:24Speaker 7: from one person showing me one chord. And I was like, oh.
- 33:30Speaker 7: And then from then on, I was like, all right.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Greg, are you up?
- 33:39Speaker 7: I introduced my children to Big.
- 33:42Speaker 6: Oh, nice.
- 33:43Speaker 11: It's probably a lot older than it should have been.
- 33:45Speaker 11: The eight-year-old got it. The five-year-old picked up his DS.
- 33:50Speaker 4: And went in the other room.
- 33:51Speaker 7: Yeah, I guess. It's far too young, but that's okay.
- 33:54Speaker 1: I'm so used to the plot now, but I guess
- 33:57Speaker 1: really it's a very weird plot when you think about it.
- 34:00Speaker 7: It is.
- 34:01Speaker 1: Especially as a five-year-old.
- 34:02Speaker 11: And, you know, the eight-year-old, who shocked me quite a bit,
- 34:06Speaker 11: her intelligence, because I, you know, just.
- 34:12Speaker 7: I was like, oh, he already thinks he's big.
- 34:16Speaker 11: When he's starting to transition and he's in that relationship,
- 34:23Speaker 11: and it's before Josh even starts to push away his
- 34:29Speaker 11: friend completely, she could see that, oh, he's already playing
- 34:34Speaker 11: that role and he's.
- 34:34Speaker 7: Not going to want to go back easily. And I
- 34:36Speaker 7: was like, you know why are you smarter.
- 34:39Speaker 1: Than me um that was bound to happen right eight
- 34:42Speaker 1: years old though that's pretty bad yeah and and and you.
- 34:45Speaker 11: Know um there were there were a couple of curse
- 34:48Speaker 11: words that i didn't remember uh being in it that's.
- 34:51Speaker 1: Funny i don't remember yeah it's funny how we block
- 34:54Speaker 1: them is it is it the jackass guy this The
- 34:59Speaker 1: other guy at the office?
- 35:00Speaker 7: No, it's his friend. Oh, that's right. I forgot about that.
- 35:02Speaker 7: When he's calling him out, he calls him everything. That
- 35:05Speaker 7: kid's funny. And I'm like, oh. And, you know, she
- 35:08Speaker 7: heard him out. That kid's pretty funny, actually. He's a
- 35:11Speaker 7: joy in that movie. And, I mean, Penny Marshall's just smart. Yeah.
- 35:17Speaker 1: She did some good movies.
- 35:19Speaker 7: It's a fun movie.
- 35:20Speaker 11: It really is, you know, to think that you could
- 35:24Speaker 11: have a job where you were just playing.
- 35:27Speaker 7: And playing as a kid. And that there are so many,
- 35:30Speaker 7: you know, office meetings where somebody, if they honestly just said,
- 35:36Speaker 7: I don't get it. Yeah. And then everybody goes, oh, fuck,
- 35:41Speaker 7: you're right.
- 35:41Speaker 4: I don't get it.
- 35:43Speaker 7: You wish somebody could just say that at some point.
- 35:46Speaker 1: I think that on the Hollywood movies, the meetings sometimes,
- 35:49Speaker 1: I'm like, somebody somewhere needs to go, um, guys, we
- 35:52Speaker 1: have wait, you want to do what?
- 35:57Speaker 7: What's fun about that?
- 35:58Speaker 1: You want to invest $ 150 million in what? Yeah, so
- 36:03Speaker 1: I wish more people would be honest in these little meetings.
- 36:06Speaker 7: And there's really not that many scenes in the movie,
- 36:09Speaker 7: and it's very simple, and it's just a great movie.
- 36:13Speaker 11: And I knew I loved it. I've not seen it
- 36:16Speaker 11: in 10 years, and we put it on, and I
- 36:18Speaker 11: just adore that movie.
- 36:21Speaker 7: It's good. It holds up, too. And A movie that
- 36:25Speaker 7: I've been wanting to watch quite a while now. I
- 36:30Speaker 7: enjoyed Old Joy and Wendy and Lucy and thought, okay,
- 36:35Speaker 7: I can understand. And so I finally sat down and.
- 36:39Speaker 4: Watched Meek's Cutoff. Oh, yeah. I saw that, too.
- 36:44Speaker 7: And I didn't even mention it.
- 36:46Speaker 11: And I'm going to turn in my movie card because
- 36:51Speaker 11: I couldn't.
- 36:53Speaker 7: I couldn't watch it. I couldn't hear. I had it
- 36:59Speaker 7: up as loud as I could get it. I even
- 37:01Speaker 7: is an English movie.
- 37:03Speaker 11: I had to put on the subtitles cause I could
- 37:06Speaker 11: not understand a damn thing that was going on. Um,
- 37:11Speaker 11: and I understand that you're showing me the reality of
- 37:15Speaker 11: the situation. I understand that you're, that it's part of
- 37:19Speaker 11: the dredging across. It is the dredging through the mood.
- 37:22Speaker 11: I mean, you know.
- 37:24Speaker 7: Um, and that the movie is more about, I think
- 37:30Speaker 7: the process than it is the movie, but good God,
- 37:35Speaker 7: it was hard. It was really hard. And, um, I
- 37:41Speaker 7: can just see the, the, the direction of the movie.
- 37:44Speaker 7: Cause I really respect the director, but I could just
- 37:46Speaker 7: see the direction of the movie going. No, no, no, no.
- 37:49Speaker 7: I want you to mumble a little more, make sure
- 37:51Speaker 7: they can't understand you. Yeah. And I got about halfway
- 37:58Speaker 7: through it, and I was like, I'm not interested in
- 38:00Speaker 7: these people. Just die. I don't care. Michelle Williams, I
- 38:07Speaker 7: still think she's a great actress. Really? Okay.
- 38:12Speaker 1: I never really liked her. I don't know what it is. Yeah, okay,
- 38:17Speaker 1: maybe I'm lowering my standards too much. No, everybody else
- 38:20Speaker 1: loves her now, so I think it's just me. I
- 38:23Speaker 1: liked her a.
- 38:23Speaker 4: Lot in Wendy and Lucy.
- 38:24Speaker 7: Exactly. I really liked her in that.
- 38:27Speaker 1: I was the other neighbor on the creek. And she
- 38:30Speaker 1: doesn't do anything now either, and what she does is lame.
- 38:32Speaker 1: So now I'm just both of them. They're all dead
- 38:34Speaker 1: to me. I'm going with Pacey. I'm going with Pacey.
- 38:38Speaker 1: Fuck it.
- 38:38Speaker 4: I couldn't watch that.
- 38:39Speaker 7: I tried. I never watched that.
- 38:43Speaker 1: I just liked Katie Holmes back then, and it's funny
- 38:46Speaker 1: to look at her now and go, what the fuck happened?
- 38:48Speaker 4: The opening scene of the first episode, I'm like, this
- 38:51Speaker 4: is too icky for me.
- 38:53Speaker 1: It's a very unrealistic world, I'll give you that.
- 38:56Speaker 4: Well, it was just so clear that we're going to
- 38:59Speaker 4: be dealing with these themes. I'm like, oh, yeah.
- 39:03Speaker 7: Well, I get that. upset at teenagers who are so
- 39:08Speaker 7: smart and so well-spoken and have... I mean, I can't
- 39:15Speaker 7: even put this thought together. I don't know. And the actual.
- 39:18Speaker 4: Teenagers I'm actually around are very smart and very well
- 39:22Speaker 4: spoken and they deserve better representation.
- 39:28Speaker 10: Well i guess what i'm saying is let's lie down
- 39:32Speaker 10: together oh but we're discovering our sexuality this is awkward
- 39:37Speaker 10: oh it's okay oh.
- 39:39Speaker 4: Wait a minute hold on it is getting all kind
- 39:41Speaker 4: of come on come on it was just i couldn't
- 39:44Speaker 4: do it yeah i couldn't watch it maybe it got
- 39:46Speaker 4: better after they weren't introducing.
- 39:49Speaker 1: The whole thing. Again, I didn't watch it the whole
- 39:52Speaker 1: first couple of seasons. The only thing I ever watched
- 39:55Speaker 1: was later on. It got interesting. And literally, as much
- 39:59Speaker 1: as I liked Katie, what sold the plot line, if
- 40:01Speaker 1: anything did, was the Pacey character. I think that Joshua
- 40:05Speaker 1: Jackson is actually probably the better actor. I know now
- 40:09Speaker 1: he just kind of does fringe. But in that group,
- 40:11Speaker 1: I think I identified with him. I mean, he's not
- 40:14Speaker 1: the pretty boy Dawson. He's kind of the dorky friend.
- 40:17Speaker 1: he you know he worked at the video store he
- 40:19Speaker 1: like you know there was just like there was a
- 40:21Speaker 1: lot of dorkiness to him he was the guy who
- 40:22Speaker 1: didn't get the girl at least midway through the series
- 40:25Speaker 1: so it's like there's a lot of dorkiness that i
- 40:27Speaker 1: think i i identified with and probably still do so
- 40:32Speaker 1: again it was it was the pacey characters the only
- 40:34Speaker 1: thing that really kept me watching what little again i
- 40:37Speaker 1: only saw a few seasons of the way too long
- 40:40Speaker 1: it went on years after it should have stopped but
- 40:43Speaker 1: The middle way through the Pacey stuff got kind of interesting.
- 40:48Speaker 11: It's not fair to Kelly Reichert that we're talking about
- 40:52Speaker 11: Dawson's Creek.
- 40:53Speaker 7: When I brought up James Gunn. But that's how disappointed
- 40:57Speaker 7: I was in the movie, I think. We watched it.
- 41:00Speaker 7: I liked it.
- 41:01Speaker 4: Lynn called it very early on. She said, this isn't
- 41:05Speaker 4: going to get resolved, is it?
- 41:07Speaker 7: Right.
- 41:09Speaker 4: She's like, we're going to get out to some point,
- 41:11Speaker 4: and then they're just going to leave us hanging there.
- 41:13Speaker 7: I just think, yeah.
- 41:15Speaker 4: And for some reason, there's a speech or two in it.
- 41:19Speaker 4: It's like, why am I so familiar with that? Did
- 41:23Speaker 4: I see a preview or somebody discussing this movie? Is
- 41:27Speaker 4: there his discussion about the difference between men and women?
- 41:32Speaker 4: It's like somehow I know that speech, almost like I
- 41:36Speaker 4: could have done it.
- 41:37Speaker 1: This is when Harry met Sally.
- 41:39Speaker 7: I don't know what it was.
- 41:40Speaker 4: It was like women are organized on the principle of
- 41:43Speaker 4: chaos and men on the principle of destruction.
- 41:46Speaker 7: I mean, I can do it now.
- 41:49Speaker 4: Where have I heard that? I don't know why I
- 41:51Speaker 4: knew it. It was very strange. I can't retrace my
- 41:55Speaker 4: memory why I was familiar with it.
- 41:58Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 42:01Speaker 4: I was okay with it. I thought it was, it
- 42:03Speaker 4: was acutely observed, clearly imagined. And it was people, you
- 42:12Speaker 4: know what I love people setting out on something that's
- 42:16Speaker 4: a bad idea and they do it and it goes badly.
- 42:20Speaker 1: I was going to say soul crushing, but okay.
- 42:23Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 42:24Speaker 7: Right.
- 42:24Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 42:25Speaker 4: I just like, I just like stories about people doing
- 42:28Speaker 4: something that seems like a bad idea, and then it
- 42:31Speaker 4: goes wrong.
- 42:32Speaker 3: They even say, at one point, why did we even
- 42:35Speaker 3: do that? And then they keep doing it. Eventually, the
- 42:40Speaker 3: one guy is right. They should go north.
- 42:45Speaker 4: But they're like, no, we're not listening to you. And
- 42:48Speaker 4: you can see how they don't want to listen to
- 42:50Speaker 4: him anymore. But still, no, at this point, I don't
- 42:54Speaker 4: know if I'd shift gears either.
- 42:56Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 42:57Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 42:58Speaker 1: It's that politeness that brought you into the house in
- 43:00Speaker 1: Funny Games.
- 43:01Speaker 7: I've seen the... I've read.
- 43:03Speaker 11: The Donner Party journals, and I've seen the Donner Party movies,
- 43:10Speaker 11: and so this just.
- 43:11Speaker 4: Kind of was.
- 43:12Speaker 7: It's the same. Yeah. It's the same scenario of they
- 43:15Speaker 7: were just blindly going off, and this felt like... that
- 43:23Speaker 7: was Moses leading them in, in the, in the desert.
- 43:27Speaker 7: And I think the movie felt like it was 40
- 43:29Speaker 7: years long.
- 43:32Speaker 11: It was like an hour and a half, but I
- 43:34Speaker 11: don't know. I, I felt like I was in high
- 43:36Speaker 11: school and someone was showing me something that.
- 43:39Speaker 7: I couldn't get yet is what I felt like. And
- 43:43Speaker 7: so I felt stupid as a movie watcher.
- 43:45Speaker 1: You were five years old and you wanted to play
- 43:47Speaker 1: your DS.
- 43:48Speaker 7: Exactly.
- 43:49Speaker 11: And so, yeah, I was a little tired. but I
- 43:52Speaker 11: really wanted to see the movie. I really enjoy, you know, backpacking.
- 43:58Speaker 7: And so I understand what it's like to be on
- 44:01Speaker 7: and on a trip and you don't know, cause you're
- 44:04Speaker 7: 12 days in and you don't know if you're still
- 44:06Speaker 7: on the right trail, you know? And you're like, we're fucked.
- 44:09Speaker 4: Yep.
- 44:11Speaker 7: But you keep walking because the guy in front of
- 44:13Speaker 7: you was walking. And so, and so I kept watching, um,
- 44:19Speaker 7: So you were just like they were. You got suckered in.
- 44:21Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 44:22Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 44:24Speaker 11: She does a really good job of showing you the
- 44:29Speaker 11: reality of something that you never could have seen yourself.
- 44:32Speaker 11: I think that's what I'm going... But I didn't enjoy it.
- 44:39Speaker 11: I'm trying to think if there's anything... Oh, I've been
- 44:41Speaker 11: watching a lot of Breaking Bad. We didn't start it
- 44:43Speaker 11: until a couple of weeks ago. I think maybe the
- 44:45Speaker 11: last episode that.
- 44:47Speaker 6: I was on.
- 44:47Speaker 7: I still.
- 44:49Speaker 1: I've heard so many good things. I just don't have
- 44:51Speaker 1: time for a whole other series. There's so much stuff
- 44:56Speaker 1: TV-wise that's pretty good now that I kind of feel
- 44:58Speaker 1: like I want to watch, but it's just so much
- 45:01Speaker 1: more of an investment. It's like if there's a one-off
- 45:03Speaker 1: movie I hear good things about, I'm like, oh, I
- 45:05Speaker 1: can watch that, but this 40 hours of footage I
- 45:09Speaker 1: need to watch of this TV series. I just, it's
- 45:12Speaker 1: such an undertaking. I have, I put off a couple
- 45:15Speaker 1: of different ones and that's one of them. Yeah.
- 45:17Speaker 11: My wife really wanted to watch it and it was
- 45:19Speaker 11: one that I wanted to watch. And finally she was
- 45:21Speaker 11: done with the series that she was done with. I
- 45:23Speaker 11: was doing nothing. Um, I don't have as much time.
- 45:27Speaker 7: As I used to.
- 45:28Speaker 11: So 45 minute episode is a lot better than an
- 45:30Speaker 11: hour or a movie or an hour and a half movie.
- 45:33Speaker 11: And so we, yeah, we've been, and I, I don't
- 45:38Speaker 11: know if I'm supposed to, but I hate every character.
- 45:43Speaker 11: It's hard for me to find somebody that has a
- 45:47Speaker 11: redeeming quality about them.
- 45:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 45:49Speaker 7: Have you watched at all, Fred? No. No. And there's
- 45:55Speaker 7: no rooting for hardly anybody in it.
- 46:00Speaker 18: So.
- 46:02Speaker 7: But you still keep watching it.
- 46:03Speaker 1: It's all performance from what I hear. I mean, everything
- 46:06Speaker 1: is just, everybody's amazing in it.
- 46:09Speaker 11: Yeah, they all do very, very well. And there's a
- 46:13Speaker 11: lot of fun things that the director's done, especially in
- 46:16Speaker 11: the second season, visually. Themes that are direct tours, I guess.
- 46:23Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 46:26Speaker 11: When you see something like that, you're at least proud
- 46:28Speaker 11: that this is on just regular cable televisions. That's good.
- 46:33Speaker 11: That means we're moving in the right direction if that
- 46:36Speaker 11: good of quality stuff is on television.
- 46:39Speaker 1: We've gotten to.
- 46:39Speaker 7: That point now.
- 46:40Speaker 1: It's a very different world than it was even 10
- 46:43Speaker 1: years ago. TV is a massively different thing.
- 46:47Speaker 7: Okay, never mind. I don't have cable, so that's why
- 46:49Speaker 7: I'm watching it.
- 46:50Speaker 4: I think The Apprentice really opened TV up to the
- 46:53Speaker 4: possibilities of artistic... Fred, you're fired.
- 46:57Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 47:01Speaker 4: It's funny fuck it at this point I'll be sitting
- 47:06Speaker 4: here eating hot dogs by myself watching.
- 47:08Speaker 7: The Oscars fuck all you guys I got bologna wrapped around.
- 47:11Speaker 1: A hot dog yeah.
- 47:15Speaker 4: It's funny about that commitment because sometimes at the end
- 47:18Speaker 4: of the day after a lot of my daughter is
- 47:20Speaker 4: watching like old office episodes with me they're so much
- 47:25Speaker 4: better than the newer ones I forgot how good the
- 47:28Speaker 4: earlier ones were I never really liked it something happens
- 47:33Speaker 4: something major happens in almost every episode unlike TV of
- 47:37Speaker 4: the past where every day looks like they're going to
- 47:41Speaker 4: get off the island but something goes wrong and then
- 47:44Speaker 4: they don't and then they listen to something on the
- 47:46Speaker 4: radio and it's over no something major happens every show
- 47:52Speaker 4: and they're really uncomfortably funny not uncomfortable for me because
- 47:58Speaker 4: I don't care Right. But for people who are made
- 48:02Speaker 4: uncomfortable by uncomfortable things, rather than being amused by them,
- 48:08Speaker 4: they're excruciatingly awkward. Yeah.
- 48:11Speaker 7: I think the Steve Carell thing, he beats a dead
- 48:17Speaker 7: horse with that same.
- 48:19Speaker 1: Yeah. To me, it overshadowed the whole show. It just
- 48:22Speaker 1: became him doing that every episode. Yeah.
- 48:27Speaker 4: Yeah. Well, at first I couldn't watch it at all.
- 48:30Speaker 4: For a long time I couldn't watch it at all
- 48:32Speaker 4: because I loved the British so much. And the first
- 48:35Speaker 4: couple of shows they were doing that, they were doing
- 48:38Speaker 4: the actual lines and bits from the British one. And
- 48:41Speaker 4: I'm like, this is wrong. And they're changing pop culture references.
- 48:45Speaker 4: I don't know. But, yeah, eventually I got into it.
- 48:49Speaker 7: I mean, is it, I don't know, that they're less
- 48:52Speaker 7: character than caricature?
- 48:57Speaker 11: Because they kind of just are, this is how Jim
- 49:00Speaker 11: would react and this is how Dwight would react.
- 49:02Speaker 7: I don't know. I'm not going to go into why
- 49:07Speaker 7: I can't get into it.
- 49:08Speaker 4: Yeah, some of them are very, like, you enjoy how
- 49:13Speaker 4: much you can predict the character. Like, a character will
- 49:17Speaker 4: do something and you'll go.
- 49:19Speaker 7: Oh, that's so.
- 49:20Speaker 4: what they would do right early on ryan the temp
- 49:23Speaker 4: is a great character ryan the temp when he's like
- 49:28Speaker 4: coked up and uh he's got some office romance going
- 49:32Speaker 4: on that he really doesn't care about that's he's uh
- 49:36Speaker 4: even later in the show um I think Jim Halpert
- 49:40Speaker 4: says to him, I liked you better when you were
- 49:43Speaker 4: a temp. Ryan says, yeah, me too. Yeah. There's something
- 49:52Speaker 4: about that, someone being indoctrinated into the employee rank that
- 49:56Speaker 4: changes them.
- 49:56Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 49:57Speaker 4: Well, and there's something, too, about working for a crazy
- 50:01Speaker 4: boss that is so, true and so uncomfortable.
- 50:06Speaker 7: And so real.
- 50:06Speaker 4: You speak from experience. Yeah, yeah, I do.
- 50:09Speaker 7: I know that firsthand, but okay, go ahead.
- 50:11Speaker 4: And it's kind of like, you know, I've always been really,
- 50:14Speaker 4: really happy with my kids' teachers and school experience. My
- 50:18Speaker 4: kids have had a great, great school experience. But then
- 50:23Speaker 4: you run into one teacher who just really does not
- 50:27Speaker 4: know what they're doing and is kind of a bully.
- 50:30Speaker 4: And it's like, my feeling is it's not really like
- 50:34Speaker 4: they're a teacher. It's like, and my kid is learning something.
- 50:38Speaker 4: Now it's like they're working for a crazy boss. And
- 50:41Speaker 4: I was hoping they could have a few more years
- 50:44Speaker 4: before they had to do that because you can do
- 50:46Speaker 4: that for the rest of your life. And you, you
- 50:49Speaker 4: just don't need it. You don't appreciate it. And, uh,
- 50:52Speaker 4: I don't know. I like the show. I like, I
- 50:56Speaker 4: love Meredith, the alcoholic nymphomaniac. I mean, she's not really
- 51:01Speaker 4: a nymphomaniac. She's just, you know, she's, Just has her idea. Yeah,
- 51:06Speaker 4: she just has her kind of sad idea of fun.
- 51:10Speaker 4: And it's, I like it. And Kelly, I love Kelly.
- 51:15Speaker 4: She's as shallow as people get. Anyway, this is a derailment.
- 51:25Speaker 1: As we normally do.
- 51:26Speaker 4: It's like in Super 8. Right.
- 51:31Speaker 1: Well, which leads me to another question, which is, assuming
- 51:34Speaker 1: you're done with your Geek Week.
- 51:35Speaker 7: I may as well be. I don't know.
- 51:38Speaker 1: I've often wondered how people feel, because I always feel
- 51:42Speaker 1: like we need to put other things in there, but
- 51:44Speaker 1: sometimes we go off in our own crazy world and
- 51:49Speaker 1: tangents and fill out a whole episode just with Geek Week.
- 51:53Speaker 1: So I may put it out there to people and
- 51:56Speaker 1: be like, hey, do you care if we do an
- 51:58Speaker 1: entire episode of Geek Week?
- 52:01Speaker 7: Because at this point we're there. Yeah.
- 52:04Speaker 1: So I say we just leave it at this for
- 52:07Speaker 1: this week. And we'll come back next week and pick
- 52:10Speaker 1: up with the movie.
- 52:12Speaker 7: Okay, kids, get out your decoder pins.
- 52:14Speaker 4: I can tell that tonight's message was really important.
- 52:19Speaker 1: You almost second-guessed it.
- 52:20Speaker 4: I keep promising myself I'm going to come up with
- 52:23Speaker 4: a decoder pin noise.
- 52:25Speaker 7: A new fanfare? Just go. Kermie commercial? Son of a bitch.
- 52:30Speaker 1: You're going to bring in your Casio SK-1.
- 52:33Speaker 7: I had a Casio SK-1 where you could press the sample.
- 52:40Speaker 1: I still have my Casio SK-1. And it works. Last
- 52:44Speaker 1: time I tested it.
- 52:46Speaker 7: That's the only feature. I saw somebody.
- 52:51Speaker 4: Use one of those in a song at a live
- 52:54Speaker 4: performance recently. They had a song written around it.
- 52:59Speaker 7: The demo on the Casio SK1. That's awesome. And then
- 53:02Speaker 7: the sampling.
- 53:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 53:04Speaker 7: That was an awesome feature.
- 53:06Speaker 1: That's the only reason I bought that one, because that
- 53:08Speaker 1: is an awesome feature.
- 53:09Speaker 7: I need to work it into the show. Santa Claus
- 53:11Speaker 7: brought me one of those.
- 53:12Speaker 1: I believe that's where mine came from. It is time
- 53:15Speaker 1: for Moving Out on Secret Circle reveal of the next
- 53:17Speaker 1: exciting feature. Next week, we will be back discussing the
- 53:22Speaker 1: much mentioned in the past and finally getting around to it, Brick.
- 53:26Speaker 7: Brick.
- 53:28Speaker 4: Is this the original Brick?
- 53:30Speaker 1: I believe this is the original Brick. So if you
- 53:34Speaker 1: can find another one, let us know. But I think
- 53:36Speaker 1: this is the only one.
- 53:38Speaker 4: So go watch it now.
- 53:40Speaker 1: It is available on Instant Watch if you're with that
- 53:43Speaker 1: company that beams things to your computer that we won't name.
- 53:47Speaker 4: Your little device or your Wii.
- 53:49Speaker 1: Yeah, your phone or whatever the hell. So go watch
- 53:53Speaker 1: it now.
- 53:54Speaker 7: Next week we'll be back with Brick. It's a definite.
- 53:57Speaker 6: I'd say so.
- 53:58Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 53:59Speaker 1: I love it.
- 54:00Speaker 7: It's a definite watch.
- 54:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
