- 0:00Heyyy, welcome back to The Science of Leading.
- 0:02I'm Claire Monroe-and sitting across from me is the ever-wise Edwin Carrington.
- 0:06Edwin, I wanna jump right in-'Cause honestly?
- 0:10Hiring mistakes... they're one of those things you don't really get until
- 0:14you've been through the pain yourself.
- 0:14You've worked with,
- 0:17sooo many orgs over the years.
- 0:19Do you have a real story-like,
- 0:21when a bad hire really, I dunno,
- 0:23blew things up?
- 0:23Oh, definitely.
- 0:25One comes to mind right away.
- 0:25I was working with a mid-sized logistics
- 0:30company-this was maybe ten years back.
- 0:33They brought in this new operations manager.
- 0:35He looked like a dream hire.
- 0:37Strong background, glowing references.
- 0:37But a few months in?
- 0:41Total chaos.
- 0:41Productivity dipped,
- 0:44turnover went up, and the whole strategy kind of... just stalled.
- 0:44Now-this
- 0:51person wasn't bad at their job.
- 0:53But the fit?
- 0:54Wasn't there.
- 0:54The way they gave feedback,
- 0:57the way they communicated-it clashed with the team's rhythm.
- 0:57It took almost
- 1:03a full year to recover from that decision.
- 1:03Yeah... I so get that.
- 1:03It's weird,
- 1:07right?
- 1:07You think if someone's got the right background,
- 1:09they'll just... slot in.
- 1:09But nope...Back when I led my first project team-I
- 1:14hired someone who, like, on paper,
- 1:16looked solid.
- 1:17But the group vibe?
- 1:18Off.
- 1:18Meetings got awkward... people stopped speaking up...And I remember-I
- 1:23literally started dreading work.
- 1:23It's wild how one person can shift the
- 1:28energy of a whole team.
- 1:28Exactly.
- 1:30And yet-most companies are still using the same tired interview questions.
- 1:30You
- 1:36know: "Tell me about yourself." "What are your strengths and weaknesses?"We've
- 1:42had decades of research showing those don't actually predict success.
- 1:42But
- 1:47old habits stick.
- 1:48There's comfort in the familiar-even if it's not working.
- 1:48Yeah,
- 1:52why is that?
- 1:53I mean... we know better.
- 1:53There's all this evidence out there-and still,
- 1:57people fall back on surface-level stuff.
- 1:57Is it just,
- 2:00like... inertia?
- 2:01Or is there more to it?
- 2:01Some of it's inertia,
- 2:03sure.
- 2:04But some of it is fear.
- 2:04Because going deeper-asking the real questions-it
- 2:09means facing answers you might not know how to handle.
- 2:09And people worry:
- 2:14"What if the candidate shuts down?
- 2:16What if I say the wrong thing?"But the truth is... the cost of not asking
- 2:21those deeper questions?
- 2:21It's way higher.
- 2:21It's not just about dollars.
- 2:21It's
- 2:27about momentum.
- 2:28Morale.
- 2:29Even your reputation as a leader.
- 2:29Okay-so let's get into the good stuff.
- 2:29Like,
- 2:34what are the questions that actually work?
- 2:34I know you and the OAD team
- 2:38are big on behavioral interviews.
- 2:38What are these five magic questions I
- 2:43keep hearing about?
- 2:43Right.
- 2:44The core idea is-go beyond the resume.
- 2:44These five questions dig into how
- 2:52someone operates under pressure,
- 2:54how they handle feedback, and whether they'll thrive in your environment.
- 2:54They're
- 2:59things like:"Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to a major
- 3:03change."Or... "Describe a situation where you got tough feedback-how'd you
- 3:09respond?"What you're looking for is patterns.
- 3:12Not polished answers-but real behavior.
- 3:12I love that.'Cause honestly,
- 3:17anyone can fake their way through the usual questions.
- 3:17But when you're
- 3:21asking about real-life moments?
- 3:23You see how they think.
- 3:23How do these questions help you spot stuff like,
- 3:27I dunno-adaptability?
- 3:29Coachability?
- 3:29It's in the details.
- 3:29With adaptability,
- 3:34you're listening for whether they resisted the change-or leaned in and
- 3:38figured things out.
- 3:38With coachability,
- 3:41it's whether they took feedback in stride-or got defensive.
- 3:41And you'll
- 3:46hear it.
- 3:46Do they blame others?
- 3:49Or do they own their mistakes and grow?
- 3:49Okay but-what about culture fit?
- 3:49That
- 3:55one always feels like... a moving target.
- 3:55What does a poor fit actually look
- 4:00like, like... day-to-day?
- 4:00It's subtle,
- 4:03but constant.
- 4:03Imagine someone used to a strict,
- 4:06top-down structure-and now they're in a team that thrives on collaboration.
- 4:06They
- 4:11don't share info.
- 4:12They make decisions alone.
- 4:12Or maybe your team values direct feedback-and
- 4:17this person just shuts down when challenged.
- 4:17Little things add up.
- 4:17You get
- 4:23tension.
- 4:24Missed expectations.
- 4:24Eventually-turnover.
- 4:24Oof-yeah.
- 4:24There's this tech startup
- 4:30I talked to once...They started using behavioral questions,
- 4:34and it was like night and day.
- 4:34They could tell who could roll with the
- 4:37chaos-and who needed hand-holding.
- 4:37Saved them so much stress.
- 4:37Exactly.
- 4:37The
- 4:43goal isn't to trick anyone.
- 4:43It's clarity.
- 4:43When you ask the right questions,
- 4:48you see both strengths and limits-before the hire happens.
- 4:48Alright-so
- 4:53let's say I'm a manager who actually wants to get this right.
- 4:53How do I
- 4:57use these questions to make faster,
- 4:59better decisions?
- 4:59Do you have, like,
- 5:00a success story?
- 5:00I do.
- 5:00One client-a family-owned manufacturing company-was
- 5:07really struggling with supervisor turnover.
- 5:07We brought in the five questions,
- 5:11and pretty quickly, they saw patterns.
- 5:11The candidates who showed self-awareness
- 5:16and adaptability?
- 5:16They stuck.
- 5:16They performed better.
- 5:20Team morale went up.
- 5:20It wasn't magic...but it was predictive.
- 5:20They stopped
- 5:26guessing-and started hiring with intention.
- 5:26That's huge.
- 5:26And I think a lot
- 5:30of leaders still underestimate how much culture matters.
- 5:30Especially heading
- 5:34into 2025.
- 5:34Why do you think people still overlook it?
- 5:34Because skills are
- 5:39easy to see.
- 5:39Fit?
- 5:41Not so much.
- 5:41Culture feels abstract,
- 5:44so it gets ignored.
- 5:44But here's the thing-Culture doesn't happen by accident.
- 5:44It's
- 5:51either shaped... or it slips away.
- 5:51And great teams?
- 5:51They're built on alignment.
- 5:56Not just talent.
- 5:56Mmm, yeah.
- 5:56I've seen that in retail too.
- 5:56Like when teams
- 6:02use OAD's role-fit tools-They catch red flags early.
- 6:02Like,
- 6:06someone who's awesome with customers... but hates routine.
- 6:06Or the opposite.
- 6:06It's
- 6:12not about filtering people out-it's about setting them up to win.
- 6:12The goal
- 6:15isn't perfection-it's predictability.
- 6:15If you know what you're looking for-and
- 6:21ask the right things-You can build teams that last.
- 6:21And that's the edge.
- 6:26Especially as work keeps evolving.
- 6:26And if you're wondering where to start-honestly?
- 6:26Just
- 6:33book a demo.
- 6:34The OAD team makes it simple to see where your hiring process is working...
- 6:39and where it's not.
- 6:39Yep-and that demo's totally free.
- 6:39Just head over to
- 6:44oad.
- 6:44ai-that's O-A-D dot A-I-and you can book it in like... a minute.
- 6:44Especially
- 6:50if you've got new roles to fill soon?
- 6:52Don't wing it.
- 6:54Now I think that's the perfect place to pause.
- 6:54Edwin,
- 6:58thank you-again-for always bringing the clarity.
- 6:58Always a pleasure,
- 7:02Claire.
- 7:02And thank you to everyone listening.
- 7:02We'll be back soon with more
- 7:06on building teams that thrive.
- 7:06Take care,
- 7:08everyone.
- 7:09See you next time on The Science of Leading.
