Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: That is Facebook modest virtue.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: All I have is his name.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Vision.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Marvel Vision Quest.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Can Marvel win us back?
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Hey everyone, it's Kilberk here.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to my channel.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Marvel has a robot trying to figure out who he is.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: I have a streaming subscription trying to figure out why I am still paying.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Somewhere between those two problems, there might be a TV show.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Vision is back, Ultron is back, and I'm back asking the question that apparently comes with every new Marvel project.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Do I need to remember something from 11 years ago?
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Because I remember when I parked yesterday approximately.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Gilbert K Show.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: I'm Gilbert K, and today we're talking Marvel Vision Quest.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Can Vision and Ultron win us back?
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Or am I about to pay Disney for more superhero homework?
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Here's what interests me about this one.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: You have a powerful being who can do extraordinary things, struggling with the most ordinary question in the world.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: What am I supposed to do with my life?
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Now that I understand.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Nobody has ever asked me to save the multiverse.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: People have asked me to fix their printer that was already too much responsibility.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Vision Quest is streaming on Disney Plus, Paul Bettany returns as Vision, and James Spader returns El Ultron.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: And I'm keeping the spoiler light.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: I'm talking about the setup, the people involved, and what would make the story works for me.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Because the big question isn't just is Vision back?
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: The question is why should we care that he's back?
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Marvel needs a good answer, preferably before the closing credits.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: The official setup has rebuilt Vision hiding from people who want to turn him into a weapon.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: He's trying to understand himself, and he has different artificial intelligence personalities inside his programming, including Ultron.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Imagine trying to make a healthy life choice while Ultron has access to the group chat.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Vision says, maybe I should connect with other people.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Ultron says, counter-offer extinction.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: That's a difficult roommate, you cannot even settle it with a chore chart.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Ultron, it says, here you're supposed to take out the garbage.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: I misunderstood the assignment.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: And Jay Spader is a very good reason to pay attention.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: He has one of those voices that can make a completely normal sentence sound like a threat.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: The kettle has boiled.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Why do I suddenly feel unsafe?
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: He could tell me my food delivery arrived, and I would check the bag for an infinity stone.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: There's something funny and potentially unsettling about giving vision access to advice from someone with Ultron's history.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Most of us hear little voice saying, Have another cookie.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Vision hears a little voice saying, Have you considered ending civilization?
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Different levels of temptation.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: But the part I really want to show to explore is identity.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: What makes vision vision?
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: His body, his memories, his decisions.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: If somebody restores all your old files, does that make you the same person?
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Because I've transferred everything to a new phone and it still looked three days to convince my banking app I existed.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Imagine being Vision, I have the memories.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Excellent.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: We've sent the verification code to your old body.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: That's a really emotional story hiding inside that ridiculous situation.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: You can remember that someone mattered to you, but remembering a feeling and feeling it again are two different things.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: That's the kind of idea that could make the series interesting even for someone who doesn't know every corner of Marvel.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: You don't need a superhero encyclopedia to understand feeling disconnected or starting over, or wondering whether you're still the person you used to be.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Sometimes life changes so much that you can own photographs, feel like somebody else's social media.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Vision has just the added inconvenience of people trying to weaponize him.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Most of us can barely convince people to answer an email.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Then there's Thomas Shepard, a mysterious young man who may be connected to Vision as his son.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: I'm keeping the question mark there.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: The official premise presents that relationship as a mystery, but that gives the story another possibility.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Vision isn't only trying to figure himself out.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: He may also have to figure out what he means to somebody else.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: And that's where the story could get me.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Put it confused, father figure, and a young person on the run.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: And suddenly the emotional stakes can be very simple.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: Can they trust each other?
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Can they survive a road trip without arguing about the music?
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Because being able to fly through a wall does not prepare you for a teenager saying you wouldn't understand.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: I'm an advanced synthetic being, okay, dad.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: That sentence defeats every generation of technology.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: But here's my concern: the story already has identity, family, artificial intelligence, a bounty, and Ultron.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: That's plenty.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Marvel sometimes gives us an interesting person with an interesting problem, then sends in a delivery truck full of explanations.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: A secret organization, a hidden experiment, a mysterious file.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Another organization investigating the first organization.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: By the end, the robot is the only person who understands what's happening.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: I don't want to pause the TV and open a spreadsheet.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: I use spreadsheets for budgets.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Entertainment should not require a second tab.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: And that brings me to the whole superhero fatigue conversation.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: For me, the problem isn't automatically that there are too many superheroes.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: It's when too much of the story feels like preparation for another story.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: I sit down for dinner and somebody keeps showing me tomorrow's menu.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: This meal looks lovely.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Could I eat it?
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: A connection to the wider Marvel universe can be fun.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: But Vision needs something worth doing today.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Give him a choice that hurts.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: Give him someone he can disappoint.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Give him a reason to keep going beyond whatever logo appears next.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: If I care about him, I'll follow him.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: If I need an organization chart, we have a problem.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: There's also an interesting person behind the series, Terry Matalas, whose credits include Star Trek Picard.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Marvel describes Vision Quest as the third part of the TV trilogy that started with WandaVision and continued with Agatha all along.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: That gives it a place in a bigger story.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: It also gives it a challenge.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: How do you reward the people who followed the journey while still welcoming someone who just clicked because they saw Paul Betany?
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Because that person matters too.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Nobody should feel like they walked into the final exam after missing a semester.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: A quick reminder wonderful.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: A clear, emotional starting point, even better.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: I don't want the entire family tree.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Just tell me who's in trouble and why should I worry?
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: And there's something very current about Vision looking for guidance from AI.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: We're all being offered AI help with everything now.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Write my email, plan my meals, organize my day.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Vision gets ultra on, and that's the premium subscription nobody requested.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Imagine the settings.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Helpful assistant, creative assistant, destroy humanity.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Who put those buttons so close together?
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: But beneath the jokes, that's a good tension.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: If different voices tell you who you should become, how do you choose your own direction?
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: And if one of those voices knows exactly how to exploit your doubts, how do you resist it?
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: That could make a conversation inside.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: Visions had more gripping than other enormous explosions.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: I enjoy an explosion, but after enough explosions, I start thinking about the insurance claim.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Somebody has to rebuild that street.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: The Vengers have a headquarters.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Apparently, nobody has a contractor.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: So can Marvel Vision Quest win us back?
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: Here's where I stand.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: The premise gives it a chance.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: Paul Betany and Jane Spader give me a reason to listen.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: The possible family connection gives it something emotional to build on.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: But the promising setup is the invitation.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: The storytelling has to make us stay.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: I want Vision to feel like a person we're spending time with.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: Someone funny, frustrating, confused, capable of making the wrong decision.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Someone who can surprise us without a secret celebrity walking through a portal.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: If Marvel can make me care whether the synthetic man finds a place in the world, that's a win.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: He doesn't have to save the whole franchise before breakfast.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Let me carry his own show.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: Now tell me what brings you to Vision Quest, Vision Story, James Ultron, or are you waiting to hear whether the homework has been canceled?
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: And one question if you could remove every Marvel connection and keep these characters, would you still want to watch?
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: That's the test I'm interested in.
