- 0:01We talk about tremors and we talk about meds, but the real
- 0:04stuff, the fear, the frustration, the identity
- 0:07shifts. That's what we don't talk enough
- 0:09about. And here's the truth.
- 0:12Those are the conversations that usually change lives.
- 0:15So stick around, because today we're diving into the
- 0:18uncomfortable side of Parkinson's, the part that most
- 0:21people avoid, but everyone feels.
- 0:24And later, Carmen's joining me again to share how those raw,
- 0:27honest talks can make all the difference.
- 0:30But not just for the person living with Parkinson's, but the
- 0:33for the care partner too. Welcome to Living with
- 0:36Parkinson's, The Good, the Bad, and the Reality.
- 0:40Real talk, real life, real community with Bryce Perry.
- 0:45Let's begin. Hey everyone, and welcome back
- 0:49to Living with Parkinson's, The good, the bad, and the Reality.
- 0:54Now, if you're new here, I'm Bryce and around here we talk
- 0:56about everything that comes with Parkinson's.
- 0:58The winds, the wobbles, the weird, and the real.
- 1:02Now, this isn't a highlight reel.
- 1:03This is life unfiltered. And if you're someone living
- 1:06with Parkinson's or caring for someone who is then or just
- 1:10trying to understand it better, you're in really good company.
- 1:13We don't just talk about symptoms here, we talk about
- 1:15living, we talk about connection and sometimes, like today, we
- 1:19talk about the things that are hard to say out loud.
- 1:23If that kind of honesty speaks to you, then hit the subscribe
- 1:26button and drop a comment and say I'm in because no one should
- 1:30have to face Parkinson's and silence.
- 1:33OK, this topic has been on my mind since last weekend's event
- 1:38when I was speaking in Toronto. After I spoke, a lot of people
- 1:42came up to, came up to me afterwards just to talk and not
- 1:46about meds or exercise, but about emotions.
- 1:50You know, I remember one man said to me that no one ever
- 1:53asked me how I'm really doing. They asked me how my tremors
- 1:56going, how's Parkinson's, not about how am I feeling, how deep
- 2:01down am I feeling? And that hit me really hard
- 2:05because I've been there. You know, we used to answer
- 2:07questions about symptoms. We're very used to it, but not
- 2:10about ourselves. We'll say, yeah, my meds are
- 2:13working, but we won't say I feel disconnected.
- 2:18We'll say I'm doing fine. Well, what we mean is I'm tired
- 2:23of pretending I'm fine. And the truth is, that's where
- 2:28the real struggle lives, in silence, because silence has a
- 2:32way of convincing you that you're the only one feeling that
- 2:35way. So today, let's talk about it.
- 2:37The fear, the sadness, the frustration, all of it.
- 2:41And I'll share some ways that I've learned to actually start
- 2:43those conversations even when it's uncomfortable.
- 2:47Now, you don't have to open up to everyone.
- 2:50You just need one safe person. Now that might be your partner,
- 2:54might be your best friend or someone from your support group,
- 2:56or just someone who actually gets it.
- 2:59Start small. You could say something like,
- 3:03hey, I don't really know how to talk about this, but I want to
- 3:06try. That's it.
- 3:08That's the doorway. And if you're the one listening,
- 3:12don't try to fix it. Just listen.
- 3:15That's gold. You know, we all need someone
- 3:18who doesn't rush to patch us up. Just sit beside us in the mess,
- 3:22just for a minute. Now, if you got that person,
- 3:26hold on to them. And if you don't, that's exactly
- 3:28why we built the inner circle. It's a space where you can talk
- 3:31about all of it. The physical, the emotional, the
- 3:33awkward, the funny. We laugh, we vent, we connect.
- 3:37Because Parkinson's is really hard, but it's easier when
- 3:41you're not doing it alone. And if you've got people like
- 3:45that in your life, if you've got a group like that, like in your
- 3:47life, that's amazing. And if you don't and it sounds
- 3:51like something you're missing, then check out the description
- 3:54in the in the description. Check out the link in the
- 3:57description below about the inner circle.
- 4:03And you know what? If you already have that one
- 4:05person who listens, tag them in the comments.
- 4:08Let's celebrate them today because that's really, really
- 4:10important. Give them some credit, some
- 4:12glory. OK, now let's talk about some
- 4:16tools that help when the words are hard.
- 4:18Because you're probably thinking, hey, Bryce, I want to
- 4:21talk about this stuff, but I freeze up every time I just
- 4:24don't want to talk about it. Well, guess what?
- 4:26I've been there. Sometimes finding the words is
- 4:29like trying to untangle Christmas lights in the dark.
- 4:32You know? You know, there's a message in
- 4:34there somewhere, but good luck trying to get it out.
- 4:37So here are a few things that help me when words don't come
- 4:40easy. First thing is, journal is
- 4:43first. Journal at first.
- 4:45Sometimes I write it out. Not fancy journaling, just brain
- 4:48dump, right? Just getting thoughts out of
- 4:50your head and onto paper. A clear space.
- 4:54You know, that's why I'm actually working on this
- 4:55Parkinson's specific journal right now.
- 4:57One that's going to let you track both symptoms and
- 4:59emotions. Because our mental health
- 5:02deserves the same attention as our Med schedule.
- 5:06Think about that one for a second.
- 5:07And hey, comment journal below. If it's something that you'd
- 5:11actually use, I'd love to know. Because if no one would use it,
- 5:15what am I doing it for? OK, here is number 2.
- 5:20OK, so here's the second thing. It's voice notes.
- 5:24This one's really simple. I hit record on my phone.
- 5:26I just talk. No script, no pressure, no
- 5:29audience. Just me saying whatever needs to
- 5:32come out. Sometimes I'll share with Carmen
- 5:35later. Sometimes I just delete it
- 5:37because I never want to share it with anybody.
- 5:39But either way, it helps me process it helps me stop just
- 5:43thinking about it. It gets it out.
- 5:47Have you ever heard, have you ever heard somebody say like if
- 5:50someone sends you an e-mail or something, you're, you're
- 5:53emotionally, you're upset, someone kind of makes you mad.
- 5:56You ever hear them say, you know, write, write the return
- 5:59e-mail, but don't send it. Give it 24 hours and if you
- 6:02still feel the same way, then send it.
- 6:04It's sort of like getting it out in words, whether you're typing
- 6:08it or whether you're reading it or whether you're speaking it
- 6:11into your your voice app. There's something just so
- 6:14relieving in that moment and it gets it out.
- 6:17And I do that all the time. I just, I just hit record on my
- 6:19phone and I blurt out, you know, if I'm mad or whatever going
- 6:23through. And again, sometimes I, I, I let
- 6:26Carmen listen to it. Sometimes I relist to a couple
- 6:28times myself. Sometimes I turn it into a
- 6:30podcast or sometimes, holy smokes, it's so raw.
- 6:33I just erase it. Don't let anybody hear it, OK?
- 6:38Now, if that sounds like something that you would do or
- 6:40if you do that, let me know. Just record me in the comments.
- 6:44Just record me, right? Record me, right?
- 6:47OK, here is the third thing for you to look at, and that's
- 6:51professional help. You know, there's absolutely no
- 6:53shame in talking to a therapist or a counselor, especially
- 6:56someone who understands chronic illness.
- 6:59Now, you don't wait for your car to break down before you change
- 7:02the oil. Same rules apply here.
- 7:05Think about that. We spend so much time, we track
- 7:08our oil right when our oil is going to run out of our car or
- 7:10whatever it might be, we know when to get it and we get it
- 7:13done. It's the same thing.
- 7:15It's the same rules. Don't wait for yourself to
- 7:18break, OK? Just do it.
- 7:20Have it even as a check in, even once a year.
- 7:23Sometimes I will go once a year, just checking in, making sure I
- 7:26I'm accountable and I'm in, OK, And now here's tool #4I call
- 7:31this one community check insurance, OK?
- 7:34When you talk to others who are living this life, you realize
- 7:37you're not broken, you're just human.
- 7:40And that's a powerful reminder when the world feels small.
- 7:44Each one of those steps, every single one of them, makes the
- 7:47next conversation that much easier.
- 7:49And every time you talk about it even a little bit, the weight
- 7:53gets lighter. It really does.
- 7:56Now, if any of those tools speak to you, drop a comment below on
- 7:59which one you're going to try first.
- 8:02Now I've got something really special.
- 8:05It is time for Carmen's Care Partner Corner.
- 8:11And guess what? I'm not going to read it.
- 8:12She's here, so let me grab her. Hi, this is such an important
- 8:17topic because from the care partner side, those
- 8:19uncomfortable conversations can be scary too.
- 8:23You don't want to say the wrong thing, you don't want to make
- 8:25things worse, and sometimes you don't even know how to bring it
- 8:28up. But when you finally do, it
- 8:31changes everything. The first time Bryce and I
- 8:34really sat down and talked about how Parkinson's was affecting
- 8:37both of us wasn't easy. We were honest about fear, about
- 8:42frustration, about what we both missed.
- 8:45And that honesty created understanding.
- 8:47Because Parkinson's doesn't just impact one person, it impacts
- 8:51the whole relationship. And when we start talking about
- 8:54it openly, it brings us closer instead of pulling us apart.
- 8:58Care partners, I'll say this, you need community just as much
- 9:03as the person you're caring for. You need people who understand
- 9:07what it's like to love someone and feel helpless sometimes, to
- 9:11be strong for them, but still need your own space to fall
- 9:14apart and rebuild. That's why conversations like
- 9:20this matter, because they remind us we're all human and we're all
- 9:24doing the best we can with something we never asked for.
- 9:27Wow. You know what, Carmen?
- 9:28You nailed it. The hard part isn't always
- 9:30starting the conversation, it's keeping it going.
- 9:34So here are three simple ways to make sure that these talks don't
- 9:37disappear after one emotional night on the couch. 1st,
- 9:41schedule it. I know, it sounds romantic,
- 9:43right? Honey?
- 9:44It's Tuesday. Time for our time for our
- 9:46emotional check in. But seriously, even 5 minutes a
- 9:49day makes a huge difference. No meds talk, no chores, just
- 9:53how are you doing? Second, use humor.
- 9:56Humor is our secret weapon. Carmen and I joke about things
- 10:00that would probably make other couples blush.
- 10:02Truly, laughter breaks tension. It's one of the healthiest tools
- 10:06we have, and it reminds us that we're still us.
- 10:09And thirdly, don't wait for a crisis.
- 10:12Don't let things build up until you're both ready to explode.
- 10:15Talk while things are small and it'll save you both a lot of
- 10:18pain later. And I'd love to hear what works
- 10:20for you. Drop a comment and share how you
- 10:23and your partner or your family keep these conversations going
- 10:27because your ideas actually might help somebody else who's
- 10:29watching right now. OK, so you made it this far.
- 10:33You made it to the Bryce ISM. Here is your Bryce ISM of the
- 10:36episode. With Parkinson's, silence is the
- 10:40symptom that hurts the most. The conversation is the medicine
- 10:44we can all give. All right, well, if this episode
- 10:48hit home, please share it. Send it to somebody who needs to
- 10:51hear that they're not alone. That's how we change culture
- 10:54around Parkinson's, one honest conversation at a time.
- 10:58And if you're ready to keep talking, keep laughing, and keep
- 11:00connecting, then make sure you check out the inner circle
- 11:04again. The link is in the description
- 11:05below. It's where we have the real
- 11:07conversation, just like this one, but in private.
- 11:10And until next time, keep showing up.
- 11:13You keep being real and you keep doing life today.
