Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: We're back. It's the Craig Way Show with Hall of
- 0:06Speaker 1: Fame broadcaster and voice of the Texas Longhearts Craig Way.
- 0:12Speaker 2: About halfway through the day's program, Cameron Parker filling in
- 0:15Speaker 2: for Craig Way. Glad to have you with us here
- 0:17Speaker 2: on this Monday afternoon on AM thirteen hundred, this zone
- 0:21Speaker 2: less than forty eight hours away from Texas and Arizona
- 0:24Speaker 2: State kicking off at the Peach Bowl. And as we
- 0:27Speaker 2: continue to preview this game, we wanted to bring you
- 0:30Speaker 2: some sound from Texas offensive coordinator and offensive line coach
- 0:34Speaker 2: Kyle Flood from his media day press conference.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Sure on behalf of Coach Narcisian and our officer staff.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Appreciate you guys being on today, Appreciate the people at
- 0:49Speaker 3: the Peach Bowl, and we couldn't be more excited to
- 0:52Speaker 3: still be playing at the stage of the season. Should
- 0:54Speaker 3: be an exciting game and everything. I've never had the
- 0:57Speaker 3: opportunity to play in this game, but I've heard from
- 0:59Speaker 3: other coaches who have and I know everything's done first class.
- 1:02Speaker 3: So we're really look forward to getting Atlanta tomorrow and
- 1:04Speaker 3: being part of a great game.
- 1:06Speaker 4: With that, all the questions all right, thanks coach Thomas,
- 1:09Speaker 4: go ahead and start us off.
- 1:11Speaker 5: Thank you, good affinute coach, thanks for joining us. You know,
- 1:15Speaker 5: could you explain the differences between playing left and right tackle,
- 1:20Speaker 5: and also, you know, with your Richard freshman Trevor Grousby,
- 1:23Speaker 5: what makes it a uncomfortable with him playing in in
- 1:25Speaker 5: his spott.
- 1:27Speaker 6: I don't know that.
- 1:28Speaker 3: There's necessarily a difference, you know, for the way we
- 1:31Speaker 3: play the game.
- 1:33Speaker 6: We don't shame.
- 1:34Speaker 3: We don't have plays that we run to the left
- 1:36Speaker 3: or to the right, or protections or things like that.
- 1:39Speaker 3: I think it's it's a matter of reps, you know.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Can you get enough reps in practice to get comfortable.
- 1:46Speaker 3: I think when a guy only plays one one position,
- 1:50Speaker 3: it generally takes like three to five days to kind
- 1:54Speaker 3: of flip that guy over and get them comfortable on
- 1:56Speaker 3: the other side. But sometimes for a guy who's a
- 1:59Speaker 3: depth player like Trevor's been for us, he's been playing
- 2:02Speaker 3: both sides the entire season, not always, not every week.
- 2:06Speaker 6: Some weeks he played one side.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Some makes my putty other some weeks, but he's had
- 2:10Speaker 3: the experience of doing it, so he's had to be
- 2:12Speaker 3: trained like that. So I think it's it's a testament
- 2:15Speaker 3: to him to be able to do it and to
- 2:18Speaker 3: play at the level that he did. So we're certainly
- 2:20Speaker 3: excited about him in his future. But I don't know
- 2:23Speaker 3: if there's necessarily a difference. I just think it's a
- 2:25Speaker 3: matter of can you find the reps over time to
- 2:28Speaker 3: get a guy to be comfortable to do it.
- 2:30Speaker 6: Would he have been able to do that week one?
- 2:32Speaker 3: I don't know that, but you know, we're pretty far
- 2:34Speaker 3: down the road this season, so he's had ample time
- 2:36Speaker 3: to do both sides.
- 2:38Speaker 6: Go cook, go ahead, Kyle.
- 2:41Speaker 7: Speaking of Trevor, he was someone who wasn't super highly
- 2:45Speaker 7: ranked by some of the services, but you know, obviously
- 2:47Speaker 7: with his track and field exploit, showed some athleticism. But
- 2:50Speaker 7: what else during the recruiting process attracted y'all's program to
- 2:54Speaker 7: wanting to recruit him and bring him into your offensive
- 2:57Speaker 7: line room.
- 2:59Speaker 3: I would say, like, the first thing I would say
- 3:01Speaker 3: is he was pretty high in my mind. You know
- 3:04Speaker 3: that's for sure now. Early on in the process. He
- 3:08Speaker 3: was a guy who was really lean, and when you
- 3:11Speaker 3: have a guy like that, you're always trying to assess,
- 3:13Speaker 3: all right, hey, can this guy ultimately put on the
- 3:15Speaker 3: bulk to play in the SEC really really athletic guy.
- 3:20Speaker 3: I got a chance to watch him play basketball, really
- 3:22Speaker 3: really athletic on the basketball court. So all that stuff
- 3:25Speaker 3: was great, And I thought his coaching staff up at
- 3:28Speaker 3: Melissa did a really good job of keeping me up
- 3:31Speaker 3: to date with kind of his progress.
- 3:33Speaker 6: So I thank them for that for sure.
- 3:37Speaker 3: But as he went through his senior year, or I
- 3:42Speaker 3: should say I apologizes, as you went through the spring
- 3:45Speaker 3: before his senior year, you could really see him start
- 3:47Speaker 3: to put on the weight.
- 3:49Speaker 6: And I think when he hopefully.
- 3:50Speaker 3: Officially visited in June before his senior year, I want
- 3:54Speaker 3: to say, we wait a minute, right around two seventy,
- 3:56Speaker 3: two seventy five, which for a guy with his frame
- 3:58Speaker 3: was was more than enough in my mind that we'd
- 4:00Speaker 3: be able to get him to where he wanted to
- 4:01Speaker 3: get to.
- 4:02Speaker 6: And then I think he was two ninety when he
- 4:03Speaker 6: got here.
- 4:04Speaker 3: I think now he's now usually between three ten and
- 4:06Speaker 3: three fifteen, three seventeen, that's usually where he is. But
- 4:09Speaker 3: the athleticism was always there. I was always really excited
- 4:12Speaker 3: about his athleticism. And then ultimately, as soon as he
- 4:15Speaker 3: showed me that okay, this guy's going to have the
- 4:17Speaker 3: size to play in the sec To me, he was
- 4:19Speaker 3: a no brainer.
- 4:20Speaker 6: He went right to the top of my list.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Danny Davis, go ahead, Kyle. Since he's talking to us,
- 4:27Speaker 4: I'm going to assume he's healthy. But Jake would be
- 4:30Speaker 4: in mind to set the career starts record at Texas
- 4:33Speaker 4: and he plays on Wednesday. Why has he been such
- 4:36Speaker 4: a consistent course for y'all since you got here and
- 4:39Speaker 4: inherited him from the previous staff.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Yeah, center Jake has started every game of center for
- 4:44Speaker 3: me since I've been here. You know's that's pretty neat.
- 4:47Speaker 3: I don't over four years. I don't know if I've
- 4:50Speaker 3: ever had that before. So that's a that is certainly
- 4:53Speaker 3: a really really nice luxury for me to have somebody
- 4:56Speaker 3: who's been with me and thinks like me.
- 4:59Speaker 6: But you're quite is like, what does that mean to us?
- 5:02Speaker 6: Or why? You know? Why is that a good thing?
- 5:03Speaker 6: I think because he loves everything about football.
- 5:06Speaker 7: He is.
- 5:07Speaker 3: He's a catalyst for the energy of the football team.
- 5:11Speaker 3: You know, if he to steal Coach Stark's expression, like
- 5:14Speaker 3: you're going to be a thermostat or a thermometer, Well,
- 5:16Speaker 3: he's a thermostat. He sets the temperature in the room.
- 5:19Speaker 3: He's not taking the temperature. He sets the temperature, and
- 5:22Speaker 3: he kind of sets the standard for us in that
- 5:23Speaker 3: offensive line room. And I think it does fill over
- 5:25Speaker 3: to the rest of the offense just because of his personality. So,
- 5:29Speaker 3: you know, I think it starts with his love for
- 5:30Speaker 3: everything about football. He loves practice, he loves the meetings,
- 5:33Speaker 3: he loves the rehab afterwards, he loves the training and
- 5:36Speaker 3: the weight weightlifting, and there's just nothing about it he
- 5:39Speaker 3: doesn't love. So that that's infectious on a football team,
- 5:42Speaker 3: and it's it's really really invaluable.
- 5:45Speaker 6: Josh New go ahead, yeah, Kyle, just to kind of
- 5:48Speaker 6: follow that up.
- 5:49Speaker 8: You know, Jake and some of the other guys have
- 5:51Speaker 8: been you know, with you for a long time and
- 5:53Speaker 8: build me moving on. Of course, you're worried about here
- 5:55Speaker 8: and now in the Peach Bowl, But somewhere in the
- 5:57Speaker 8: back of your mind are you at all thinking about
- 6:00Speaker 8: what twenty twenty five could look like and just you know,
- 6:02Speaker 8: the need to ingratiate some new pieces.
- 6:06Speaker 3: As a as a college coach especially, you're always like
- 6:12Speaker 3: coaching your current team and then there's always an eye
- 6:15Speaker 3: to the future of hey, you know, how are we
- 6:18Speaker 3: building this roster. How are we building this position group?
- 6:21Speaker 3: So you know we have to do that. That's just
- 6:23Speaker 3: good practice in terms of what you have to do
- 6:25Speaker 3: as a coach. It never never takes away from from
- 6:27Speaker 3: what you're doing right now. But I'm excited about my room.
- 6:31Speaker 3: I think we've got a deep room. I think we've
- 6:33Speaker 3: got a versatile room in terms of guys being able
- 6:35Speaker 3: to play different positions. And you know that'll be something
- 6:38Speaker 3: that'll all shake out in the offseason. But they're practicing
- 6:41Speaker 3: hard right now. You know, one of the advantages of
- 6:42Speaker 3: playing this long is we get to continue to practice.
- 6:46Speaker 3: So these practice weeks are really really valuable to these
- 6:49Speaker 3: young players. You know, the freshman in our group like
- 6:52Speaker 3: Nate Kibble and Danny Cruz It's and Brandon Baker. It's
- 6:56Speaker 3: like the guys who've only been here a year. Well
- 6:58Speaker 3: now not only do they practice with us through the
- 7:00Speaker 3: regular season, now we're we're kind of deep into the
- 7:02Speaker 3: postseason and it's it's just those practices are really valuable.
- 7:06Speaker 6: So you know, we're always looking at it.
- 7:08Speaker 3: And again, I like, I like the room that we have,
- 7:11Speaker 3: but you know that's the flaw shakeout in the offseason.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Right now, we're kind of focused with the team on
- 7:17Speaker 3: on getting a win in.
- 7:17Speaker 6: This game that are cold and you're up.
- 7:21Speaker 9: I think of the line was pretty healthy for the
- 7:23Speaker 9: most part, but when these injuries came, you know, with
- 7:27Speaker 9: Calvin and with Cam, how important was the cross training
- 7:32Speaker 9: that you did in the preseason just in case this happened.
- 7:37Speaker 6: It's really important. I think it's really important.
- 7:39Speaker 3: I think my part of my obligation to coach Sark
- 7:43Speaker 3: and to the offense is to make sure we can
- 7:45Speaker 3: always get whatever combination of the best five players on
- 7:48Speaker 3: the field is. And that's why I tell people it's
- 7:51Speaker 3: not like, Okay, this guy's the backup right tackle, this
- 7:53Speaker 3: guy's the backup right guard, this guy's the backup center.
- 7:56Speaker 6: That's not how it works. And it's it's not a
- 7:58Speaker 6: it's not.
- 7:58Speaker 3: A negative to any player who didn't go in the
- 8:00Speaker 3: game when the injuries happened. It's just to me, I
- 8:02Speaker 3: got to make sure we've got the best combination of five.
- 8:04Speaker 3: So if that means Cole Hudson's got to play right
- 8:07Speaker 3: guard or left guard, well that's kind of how we
- 8:09Speaker 3: train him during the week. And if that means Trevor
- 8:10Speaker 3: Guzby's got to play right tackle or left tackle or
- 8:13Speaker 3: Hayden Connor's got to go to center so that we
- 8:15Speaker 3: can keep that best combination in there. You know that
- 8:17Speaker 3: that's really we start that very very early in the
- 8:20Speaker 3: year to make sure we're ready to do it when
- 8:22Speaker 3: we need it. And we were fortunate this year to
- 8:23Speaker 3: not need it for a while, but you know, now
- 8:26Speaker 3: we need it and we're gonna probably need it going forward.
- 8:29Speaker 6: Bron go ahead. Hey, hey, Kyle, are you interested in
- 8:36Speaker 6: being a head coach again? Right now?
- 8:39Speaker 3: I'm interested in winning the Peach Bowl, So I appreciate
- 8:43Speaker 3: that question. I think, you know, those kind of questions
- 8:46Speaker 3: are always a function of success, and generally when you're
- 8:50Speaker 3: an assistant coach, if you get an opportunity to be
- 8:52Speaker 3: a head coach is because you were really good at
- 8:55Speaker 3: the job you were doing and the team you were
- 8:57Speaker 3: with was successful. So you know, well, we'll entertain those
- 9:01Speaker 3: things down the road, you know, if and when they come,
- 9:03Speaker 3: and it's it's always flattering to be considered for those things,
- 9:06Speaker 3: But I don't ever like put my mind there because
- 9:10Speaker 3: right now we've got we've got enough of a challenge
- 9:12Speaker 3: trying to trying to play really well against a good
- 9:14Speaker 3: Arizona State team.
- 9:16Speaker 6: David Ecker, Go.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Ahead, Kyle. I appreciate the time today. I was just
- 9:21Speaker 1: curious something interesting that came out of yesterday was a
- 9:26Speaker 1: couple of the players talked about coach p K and
- 9:29Speaker 1: I guess his his patience when it comes to making
- 9:32Speaker 1: late adjustments in the play clock pre snap. I'm just
- 9:35Speaker 1: curious from an offensive perspective, what kind of challenge does
- 9:38Speaker 1: that pose one of the defensive coordinators is willing to
- 9:42Speaker 1: do to that and kind of tweak things late before
- 9:44Speaker 1: the snap.
- 9:46Speaker 3: You mean, like when the defense changes late in the year. Yeah,
- 9:49Speaker 3: oh yeah, no, that's certainly, that's certainly a challenge I think.
- 9:52Speaker 3: You know, offensively, you know, we try to be really
- 9:56Speaker 3: good at controlling the tempo to try to make the
- 9:58Speaker 3: play callers on the defense not have the ability to
- 10:01Speaker 3: know when the ball is going to be snapped. And
- 10:03Speaker 3: sometimes that you know, you saw us in the last game.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Sometimes we go faster and sometimes we don't go nearly
- 10:08Speaker 3: as fast. But no, it's an issue.
- 10:11Speaker 6: It does. It does complicate things, you know.
- 10:13Speaker 3: One of the harder things to deal with on offenses
- 10:15Speaker 3: that is when the picture changes, you know, because now
- 10:19Speaker 3: eleven guys got to got to make a change in
- 10:21Speaker 3: their mind in terms of what their assignment and technique
- 10:24Speaker 3: is going to be.
- 10:24Speaker 2: We'll hear more from Kyle Flood throughout today's show. I
- 10:27Speaker 2: love this response back when asked about it if he's
- 10:30Speaker 2: pursuing head coaching jobs, and he said, I'm focused on
- 10:33Speaker 2: winning the Peach Bowl, and then from the Peach Bowl,
- 10:35Speaker 2: focus on winning the Cotton Bowling. From there, focus on
- 10:38Speaker 2: winning the national championship. But without a doubt, a function
- 10:43Speaker 2: of being successful program is you have other coaches on
- 10:45Speaker 2: your staff who are being looked at for other coaching positions.
- 10:49Speaker 2: I mean, we've seen Brendon Marion move on the UNLV
- 10:52Speaker 2: from receivers coach to to offensive coordinator. We've seen Johnny Nansen,
- 10:58Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Jeff Choke, the Linemacker's coach takeover at Nevada,
- 11:02Speaker 2: and there's gonna be other guys. I think Dashar Choice
- 11:05Speaker 2: is a big name that eventually get looked at to
- 11:07Speaker 2: be coming up. It's a coordinator at a D one program.
- 11:10Speaker 2: And I'm sure Kyle Flood and pk are being looked
- 11:12Speaker 2: at by other coaches by their schools as to be
- 11:15Speaker 2: their next head coach because the success that Texas has
- 11:19Speaker 2: had these last few years breeds that type of development
- 11:24Speaker 2: from coaching, from coordinator spots to head coaching positions. But
- 11:29Speaker 2: we will see and we will hear more from Kyle
- 11:32Speaker 2: Flood throughout today's show here up next to Craig Way,
- 11:35Speaker 2: able to sit down with Jade Baron, Thorpe Award winning
- 11:40Speaker 2: defensive back in Flugerville, Connelly native Jade Baron up next
- 11:45Speaker 2: as the Craig Way Show continues on this Monday afternoon
