- 0:14minutes. Stephen M simple covers the
- 0:16Huskers. We'll talk Huskers and Penn
- 0:18State with sip in his weekly spot.
- 0:20And then David Kaplan will head to Chicago for his bump.
- 0:25He will join us. It's the Steelers and the Bears
- 0:28in Aaron Rodgers House Soldier Field.
- 0:32Hello Dave. sinicanzonecoverage.com pack for
- 0:35preview on Sunday mornings year #30 on KFAN.
- 0:38How are you, Dave? Trenton, Ken.
- 0:41I'm good boys, good to talk to you as always.
- 0:43Good to talk to you. Have you had your border battle
- 0:46yet with PA or does that come tomorrow?
- 0:49That'll be tomorrow with the Friday football feast in lovely
- 0:51Blaine, MN. Beautiful.
- 0:53And those things still is popular, even though the Vikings
- 0:56are circling the drain. Well, they have been, I haven't,
- 1:01I haven't, you know, seen the last couple weeks.
- 1:03But I always see a video where they got the line wrapping
- 1:06around the restaurant before it opens.
- 1:07So yeah, it's still a pretty popular Friday activity because,
- 1:10you know, they're serving beer at 9:00 in the morning.
- 1:12Can't beat it. All good?
- 1:14Hell yeah. My kind of people.
- 1:16Absolutely. So Jordan Love had to miss a
- 1:17little bit of time against the Giants.
- 1:19Malik Willis came in. If nothing else, I'm not saying
- 1:22you should replace Jordan Love. It seems like, you know, if you
- 1:26have an adequate A serviceable backup quarterback that's a
- 1:30commodity in the NFL. SO2 parter with Willis.
- 1:33Is he a long term, let's hope he can stay in Green Bay?
- 1:36Or is this a guy that you know, deserves another chance and may,
- 1:39you know, seek green your pastures in search of that
- 1:42second chance when he's given that opportunity?
- 1:44Where are the Packers on Malik Willis?
- 1:46Well, it's the last year of his deal and it's all going to be
- 1:49down to whether another team views him as a guy that could
- 1:52compete for the starting job. I do think he's going to seek
- 1:56reader pastors and I do think he's earned an opportunity to
- 1:59help feed for a job somewhere as a Packer follower.
- 2:02I'd like nothing more than for him to be the backup for Green
- 2:05Bay for as long as Jordan loves the quarterback he has.
- 2:08He's just shown the ability now over the last couple seasons to
- 2:11step in hold in the middle of a game.
- 2:14I mean, he instantly ignited to see that that he had scored on a
- 2:18drive over 7 plays and put him in the end zone using his legs,
- 2:21his feet, his arm. Touchdown pass was not the most
- 2:25open window, but he found Christian Watson, who made a
- 2:28great catch. So, yeah, I know he is, I guess
- 2:30with what fans would like to call the prototypical backup.
- 2:33But as a young guy in his third or fourth year, I'm sure he'd
- 2:36love a chance to show he could be the guy somewhere.
- 2:39So what I ask you about this? We talk about rivalries to
- 2:42explain to Ken, because he's only lived in central Iowa.
- 2:45Rivalries depend in the state of Iowa, kind of where you live,
- 2:48where you grow up. It's important.
- 2:49Is it the same thing for Packer fans?
- 2:52You obviously being where you are?
- 2:54It's the Vikings and the Packers are a huge one, but is it
- 2:56dependent on kind of where you live in the state?
- 2:59What's more important between the Bears rivalry and the
- 3:01Vikings rivalry for Green Bay fans?
- 3:04I've always said that I grew up in Milwaukee and then for me,
- 3:06the Bears are always the Packers biggest rival.
- 3:11I grew up in the 70s and the 80s and it was just, it was Bears,
- 3:14Packers and it wasn't close. But, you know, over the last 20
- 3:17or 30 years that the Vikings have been such a more
- 3:19competitive team. They have fought the Packers for
- 3:233/4 of the division titles over the last quarter century.
- 3:27And I think once Brett Favre sported the purple jersey kind
- 3:31of lit a fuse into this rivalry that took it to a place that had
- 3:35never been. And I just think, you know,
- 3:36overall, the Vikings would probably have the lead.
- 3:39But over 100 and some years, it's been the Bears, and the
- 3:42Bears have turned the corner. And Trent, I know you're praying
- 3:45and hoping that their luck doesn't run out soon.
- 3:49That might turn just a little bit.
- 3:50Yeah, I think out of its geographical, if you're on the
- 3:53West side of Wisconsin growing up, it's the bikes.
- 3:55If you're a Milwaukee guy, it's always going to be fair.
- 3:59Interesting. Interesting fact.
- 4:00Well, here come the here come the Vikings, a team that look,
- 4:05I, I, I don't want to call him a rudderless ship, but it sure
- 4:07seems like that at the quarterback position.
- 4:10I get that it's still early in his career.
- 4:11He watched all of last year and this he's got till at least
- 4:15until the end of the year to and then I think the Vikings brass
- 4:19is going to have a decision. Do you see it that way, Dave?
- 4:22When you watch JJ McCarthy as a fan of a different team, I'm
- 4:25guessing you're glad he's under centre or in the shotgun in his
- 4:28case. But where are you on McCarthy?
- 4:32Yeah, I mean, to be honest, I haven't watched the last couple
- 4:34of days because the Packers have played some of that.
- 4:37But they're in such a tough spot because they they trumpeted the
- 4:41fact that they had a young quarterback who got to sit for a
- 4:44year, learn from not just Kevin O'Connell, but Kate McConnell,
- 4:48and they put people around him to just put him in a position to
- 4:51succeed in the season. Well, you know that they have a
- 4:54veteran roster coming off A14 win season.
- 4:56They spent the money they didn't have to pay a quarterback in the
- 5:00offseason to fortify the offensive defensive lines.
- 5:02And they they really thought this was going to be like a
- 5:04Brock Purdy arc like the Niners had where they could build a
- 5:08petrol roster around a rookie scale quarterback in.
- 5:11And obviously through the games he's played this year, it
- 5:14doesn't appear that he's ready to carry a team that's ready to
- 5:17contend. So they're not a really tough
- 5:19spot. I just, I think back to the
- 5:21quote that Kevin O'Connell had when the season started, such a
- 5:24good one that organizations fail young quarterbacks a lot more
- 5:28than quarterbacks fail organizations.
- 5:30So he has a new deal, He's not going anywhere.
- 5:33I think he's tied his at least immediate future to JJ McCarthy
- 5:37and I I think it's this year and next year.
- 5:40I don't think they jump ship if things don't turn around.
- 5:44This is a kid that's still showing his first start that go
- 5:46on the road in prime time and and lead his team in the fourth
- 5:49quarter and went to Detroit and had a good game against a very
- 5:52good team. So he gives you these snippets,
- 5:54but he's obviously not close to where he needs to be to be a
- 5:57consistent quarterback. So I just think it's a lot of
- 5:59frustration, especially with the fan base that they were all in
- 6:02on. This is our team with all we
- 6:04needed to show a quarterback that's ready to contribute and
- 6:07we can go places. And unfortunately for them, he
- 6:10hasn't yet shown that he's ready to contribute.
- 6:12Definitely helps when he got a top flight running back like he
- 6:14does when Josh Jacobs is healthy.
- 6:16Then deal with that calf injury. We talked about that the last
- 6:18couple of times, Dave. Now he's got another injury on
- 6:21top of it with the knee contusion that he exit the game.
- 6:24Didn't practice yesterday. Josh Jacobs, so important for
- 6:27this offense and certainly inside the red zone.
- 6:29Emanuel Wilson is the backup here.
- 6:31What do we think that running back going into the week?
- 6:34Well, Jacobs did return to practice today.
- 6:36That just came out in the last, I don't know, 15 or 20 minutes.
- 6:40So very encouraging. The guy's a warrior.
- 6:43He's going to do all he wants. I'll tell you what, you're going
- 6:45to see a lot of Chris Brooks, the Packers third running back
- 6:48this week. He is their designated blitz
- 6:51picker upper. If you look back at a couple of
- 6:54plays last week, most particularly the play of the
- 6:56game was that third ten. He needs to save me on Williams,
- 6:59where Love had to buy some time in the pocket to tell his
- 7:02receiver to go deep, and it was Chris Brooks who picked up a
- 7:05blitzing linebacker and held him off for a few seconds there to
- 7:09allow Love to make that play. They love having him out there.
- 7:13When teams are blitz happy, we know that this is about the most
- 7:16blitz happy defense you can face.
- 7:18So yes, I think it looks good that Josh Jacobs is going to get
- 7:21some run. But I do think you're going to
- 7:23see maybe 2030% of Chris Brooks out there because he will help
- 7:28keep Jordan a vertical and that's obviously a priority
- 7:32number one every week. Is Lafleur having some fun with
- 7:35the injury report? I mean, there's 15 guys listed
- 7:38as questionable. Are they that banged up?
- 7:41Yeah, there are so many guys that either limited or miss
- 7:44practice today, only Clay Walker and Eight halves and I think
- 7:49Lucas said miss practice. Otherwise everybody's practicing
- 7:52in some regard. But they had guys drop out, I
- 7:55guess Carl Brooks miss practice to his defensive lineman.
- 7:59They had a number of guys drop out last week.
- 8:01In fact, their whole receiving corps was questionable, like
- 8:04coming into that game and still is getting into Sunday.
- 8:07It's a banged up team. Most teams are banged up.
- 8:10Feels like every year around this time, Green Bay is about as
- 8:13injured as anybody else. But this is also the time of
- 8:16year where they play their best football under Mount Lafleur.
- 8:18No team has been better at home after Week 11 over the last six
- 8:22years than Green Bay. This is obviously a huge one
- 8:25because they got Detroit four days later than the Bears come
- 8:28to town. So they're being very careful I
- 8:31think with other ones listing these guys and, and how much
- 8:34work they're giving him during the week because they know they
- 8:37got the hardest schedule on paper right now in the NFL.
- 8:39The rest of the year, 5 division games, a pro game in Denver, a
- 8:43home game in Baltimore. There are no gimmies, there are
- 8:45no bunnies. There are no Jameis Winston and
- 8:48and interim head coaches on the docket.
- 8:51So they they got to get healthy and be very careful making sure
- 8:54their guys are ready for Sunday. Christian Watson has returned,
- 8:58coming off the ACL tear at the end of last season.
- 9:01It looked good, had a couple of touchdowns last week.
- 9:03Is it time to take the training wheels off?
- 9:05We have always thought you can see at a time this guy could be
- 9:09an absolute #1 and it's never popped because of a myriad of
- 9:12different reasons. Is it time now?
- 9:13I mean, there's a time to get him out there playing 80% of the
- 9:16snaps and seeing if Watson can turn into the guy that a lot of
- 9:19thought people thought he was going to be 3-4 years ago.
- 9:23Yeah, I think it is. And I think they're really
- 9:24getting closer to that. The first couple of weeks they
- 9:28were careful. I thought he played a lot more
- 9:29last week. That touchdown catch that ended
- 9:32up winning the game. I mean, it looked like Randy
- 9:34Moss, the way he went up and used his hands to just swipe
- 9:38that ball. There were two or three guys
- 9:39around him. He's got everything you want,
- 9:42right? The size, the hands, the speed,
- 9:44he's a difference maker. He just hasn't been able to stay
- 9:46on the field. So they're, I think just always
- 9:49cautious that they want him available in December and
- 9:53January. That has not always been the
- 9:54case. They're going to get Jaden Reed
- 9:56back here in a couple of weeks. They got to really open things
- 9:59up in the middle of the field, which will give them more
- 10:02opportunities downfield with Christian Watson.
- 10:04But he's becoming a guy that George Lovin this offense relies
- 10:08that when they have to have a finish, have to see a playmate.
- 10:11He is their most talented wide receiver.
- 10:13That's not even a question. Maybe Matthew Golden, we'll get
- 10:16there, but it sits right now. Watson's the most talented guy.
- 10:20It's just a matter of whether he can stay on the field.
- 10:23And yeah, I do think they're getting closer to just saying we
- 10:26can't mess around. We need this guy to make plays.
- 10:28Give me 30 seconds on this day, because we won't have to.
- 10:30We won't have an opportunity to talk to before the Thanksgiving
- 10:33Day lid lifter against the Lions.
- 10:35Are are the Packers considering what happened in week one,
- 10:38walking into that proverbial Lions den on Thanksgiving to
- 10:42kick off the triple header of NFL football?
- 10:46Not overlooking the Vikings game, but if you would take a
- 10:48look at Thursday for us real quick.
- 10:50Yeah, I think it's obviously going to be a game that'll be
- 10:53the first game of the season. Green Bay is not favored and the
- 10:56Lions will be coming off most likely a pretty big win over the
- 10:59New York Giants. But I give Green Bay a pretty
- 11:02good chance to earn the sweep. I just think Detroit, you look
- 11:05at the stats, man, they struggle on Thanksgiving Day.
- 11:08They just do not play well on Thanksgiving Day.
- 11:11You wouldn't think it's the case, but the facts don't lie.
- 11:13And I think their offensive line is an issue.
- 11:16They are banged up and the Green Bay's front has not been great
- 11:19if laid outside of Michael Parson's.
- 11:20That's been a talker, Where's Rashaan Gary?
- 11:22Where's Devante Wyatt? I think Green Bay can give
- 11:25Detroit some fits. Will they win?
- 11:26I wouldn't put money on it, but I think it's going to be a
- 11:29really close game. Most people are going to be just
- 11:31betting the Lions and assuming they're going to get the split.
- 11:34Green Bay may have some surprises in store.
- 11:36Good stuff. Happy Thanksgiving, Dave.
- 11:38Appreciate. We'll talk to you in advance of
- 11:40the Bears making their way to Lambeau Field first weekend in
- 11:43December. Thank you, Dave Sinican.
- 11:45You bet. Have a great holiday guys.
- 11:47Yep, you do the same. Thanks pal Dave Sinican as we
- 11:49check in on one of our regional teams of the Green Bay Packers.
- 11:52Well, this time next week will be Thanksgiving.
- 11:56It'll be the eve of away we go the heroes game over in Lincoln.
- 12:00This year it's Nebraska and Iowa.
- 12:04And before they they play each other, we've got Penn State,
- 12:07Nebraska and Stephen M Sipple from Husker Illustrated part of
- 12:10on three media joins us. Ciprian Ken, thanks for joining
- 12:13us. How are you?
- 12:15Fine. How are you?
- 12:16Guys doing well, just before we get into things, just plant this
- 12:20in the back of your head. We're going to call you Tuesday
- 12:22next week, Tuesday of next week at 1:30, but I'll text you
- 12:27'cause we have to have you on Husker Week over here.
- 12:30Sip. You know that, buddy.
- 12:32Oh God, yes, I have to I have to hear you guys on Husker week.
- 12:36I need you. You can count on that.
- 12:39All right, let's let's get into the bye week.
- 12:41I guess the maybe away from the team, but in a recruiting sense,
- 12:48Rayola's kid brother decommitting.
- 12:51I'm guessing it's a massive talker over in the state of
- 12:53Nebraska, particularly in Lincoln.
- 12:55What is? Is there anything, anything to
- 12:58read into that step? As far as Dylan?
- 13:02Goes whatever the youngster is, yeah.
- 13:06Oh, no. Dayton.
- 13:07OK, so. Dayton, Yeah, I think what?
- 13:08You're asking is, is it? Does this, does this indicate
- 13:11that Dylan might be on the move? It's, yeah, Dayton Raiola that
- 13:15he committed. He's a class of 2026 kid in
- 13:18Beaufort, Georgia. He's having a fabulous season at
- 13:22Beaufort. But yeah, he'd be committed
- 13:25yesterday. Got going so fast.
- 13:28Yeah, it was yesterday. So, you know, the question in my
- 13:33mind right away was, are we going to get an announcement on
- 13:36Dylan too here? You know, Dylan's out.
- 13:39He's got a fractured fibula. He had surgery.
- 13:42You know, what you're seeing is guys announcing they're going to
- 13:45go in the portal. The portal doesn't open until
- 13:47January 2nd. But you know, I did not
- 13:51necessarily anticipate it going like that.
- 13:53The guys would announce they're going in.
- 13:56So I thought, OK, is this what's going to happen?
- 13:58No, it's not. I don't anticipate that.
- 14:02The I don't, I mean, I don't mind saying I talked to Dominic,
- 14:08his dad. I've known Dominic, his father,
- 14:10the father, the Rayolas. He's a great center in Nebraska.
- 14:13And I've known him since 1998. You know, we've had a
- 14:17relationship for 30 years, you know, I mean, so I, you know, I
- 14:20get a lot of information. Dom doesn't.
- 14:23Yeah, I got to be careful what I share, obviously.
- 14:25But no, they're separate. They're separate matters.
- 14:29Dayton and Dylan now it's complex because Dylan's out and
- 14:35they have, you know, TJ Latif is playing and he played very well
- 14:41against the LA So, you know, it's fluid.
- 14:46You got to kind of see how these next two games go.
- 14:50And then like if if let's just put it this way, if TJ Latif
- 14:55plays well and they win, you know, one or one or two of these
- 15:01remaining games, then there will be hard decisions that have to
- 15:05be made. But right now, it's just kind of
- 15:08status quo. You just got to kind of see how
- 15:11it plays out. Latif this week, Penn State team
- 15:15that playing hard, obviously not the season anybody anticipated
- 15:19coming into the year, but a good defense.
- 15:21Now for the first time, a team's going to have tape against them,
- 15:23a lot of tape. A full game against UCLA if it
- 15:26goes well this week. I mean, how much does that
- 15:28change the equation? You said it, it kind of matters.
- 15:30But if he plays well here, plays well against Iowa defense and
- 15:35the Rayola fact, I mean, SIP, this is just so complex because
- 15:39it's not just any quarterback. It's the family connections, the
- 15:42dynamic, the uncle on the staff there.
- 15:44There's so many layers to this. It's one of the more intriguing
- 15:46stories I think left in the Big 10 right now because we know
- 15:49it's Indiana and Ohio State and the championship game, other
- 15:51teams fighting for a playoff. I think this is incredibly
- 15:53intriguing for this, how you play this and really the future
- 15:57that the interim future, the next couple of years of Nebraska
- 16:00football of how this plays out because of all the extra layers
- 16:03that go into it. Oh yeah, I mean, it's.
- 16:06It's. Yeah, I mean from a.
- 16:09Just a. Drama, drama, just interesting.
- 16:13I mean, you know, it's not negative.
- 16:15I don't look at it that way. Some of it just there's a
- 16:19pragmatic element to it and that is the money.
- 16:22It's just, it's just you can't pay 2 quarterbacks, you know,
- 16:27$2,000,000 a piece. And if Latif plays well, think
- 16:33about how marketable he would be if he OK, So what he did against
- 16:37UCLA was 13 for 15. And he looked, he looked, he
- 16:42looked very good. He was sharp, 13 of 15.
- 16:45Didn't throw his first incompletion until early in the
- 16:49fourth quarter. Don't know that anybody really
- 16:51saw that coming. You know, he handled it really
- 16:55well. He was sharp in all areas.
- 16:58Operationally, they didn't have issues.
- 17:00You know, he threw, he threw balls into tight windows a
- 17:04couple times. They asked him to throw on the
- 17:07final closing Series A couple times, which indicated
- 17:10confident. He went to Dana Holgerson before
- 17:13the game and said, hey, I got you, I got this.
- 17:17Call it like you normally would, tells you he's very confident
- 17:20now. Ball was sticky and it was
- 17:22sticky. It was 85° out there.
- 17:25You guys picked up football. Sometimes it just feels really
- 17:27good in your hand, right? And it comes out well.
- 17:31And it was that kind of day. It was it was gorgeous.
- 17:33It was no win. You know, he was in his element.
- 17:37He's a California kid from Compton now.
- 17:39Now you're going in a different. I can't even think of 2 football
- 17:43environments much different than the Rose Bowl in Pasadena and
- 17:48the hell hole that is Penn State.
- 17:50I, I, I, I, I hate to say it that way, but that place is like
- 17:54going to Croatia. So now it's going to be a lot
- 17:59different. It's going to be a lot different
- 18:01for for Latif now we'll see what it looks like there that then
- 18:05we'll get a better idea about PJ Latif.
- 18:08Is Emmett Johnson kind of have a difficult decision once it all
- 18:11comes to an end and Brian that if it if the decision is yes, he
- 18:14will have a a decision to make. Then they get it would come to
- 18:17an end next Friday against the Hawkeyes mean they're using out
- 18:21of the backfield. Obviously we see how gifted he
- 18:23is with his footwork. But the NFL I mean it's a man's
- 18:26game as you know sip SO2 parter Emmett Johnson.
- 18:30Is he a pro in your mind, and is he going to, you know,
- 18:33ultimately have to make that decision in advance of the bowl
- 18:37game? I OK, I'm going to go to the
- 18:44back door on this and answer the second one.
- 18:47You know how it goes. He he'll get a great, you know,
- 18:51he'll be evaluated in a formal manner, in a formal manner by
- 18:56the NFL and so I'm sure he'll base his decision much on that
- 19:02evaluation, pre draft evaluation.
- 19:05And then also, you know, he plays for a head coach that
- 19:10spent three plus years in the NFL and has a lot of connection.
- 19:14He'll have a good idea of his. The best idea you can get I
- 19:19guess is often, it's often very difficult to get a good read on
- 19:25it, but I think you'll get it, have a pretty good read on it.
- 19:28Most people here, especially in the media, the guys I talked to
- 19:32just think it's automatic. He'll be gone.
- 19:36He's probably a 3rd to 5th rounder type guy now.
- 19:41What I say to them now I'm in the vast minority here, but I
- 19:45just, if Nebraska puts $1,000,000 in front of them,
- 19:51which they can and they probably would have to, that's, that's
- 19:54guaranteed. I mean, you've got $1,000,000
- 19:57right there. There's no guarantee they're
- 19:59going to make an NFL team. In my mind.
- 20:02I, I don't know that he's that kind of back where he can just
- 20:05say, Oh yeah, he's going to be on a roster.
- 20:06He's good, but he's five 11200 and he's not a blazing fast
- 20:11running back at five 11200. I like what he's doing.
- 20:16He's very good. He's he's a first team all Big
- 20:1810 pick in my mind. But I don't know that he's a no
- 20:23brainer NFL pick or or I don't think it's a no brainer that he
- 20:27would make a roster. So that I don't know.
- 20:32I wonder if if you would, if you'd say, OK, I'll take the
- 20:35million, come back and then try the NFL next year.
- 20:37I don't know. I don't know what he'll do.
- 20:39Offensively, we've seen certainly some steps forward
- 20:42this year. Special teams have been a big
- 20:43step forward. But I want to go to Dana
- 20:45Holderson coaching carousel is going to be upon us here pretty
- 20:48quick. Domino's are going to fall and
- 20:49he's not going to get the Penn State job or the Florida chop.
- 20:51We know that. But there is a trickle down
- 20:53effect. There are some backfilling of
- 20:55jobs that are going to happen. Does Holderson want to be the
- 20:58headband once again? And even if it's back to the mid
- 21:01major route, you know, something along those lines, could that be
- 21:04a possibility that he's going to be or his agent more
- 21:06importantly, going to be shopping him and Nebraska's
- 21:08going to be in the market for new OC?
- 21:12You know, there hasn't been any, he hasn't been linked to
- 21:15anything. There hasn't been any speculate
- 21:18there. He hasn't turned up on any list.
- 21:21You know, like Oklahoma State, there was there was a little bit
- 21:24of a little bit of speculation out of the gate, but it quickly
- 21:29went away. I don't know.
- 21:36It's kind of depends on on what how that carousel spins and what
- 21:41else opens. I think.
- 21:44I do think he would he would be he would become a head coach
- 21:48again for the right price. But I it hasn't been a big
- 21:53discussion over here, Trent. It really hasn't.
- 21:56It could get to be 1, but man, it hasn't.
- 21:59It's nobody's talking about it right now.
- 22:01You don't more than anything it to me, it would be like a
- 22:04sunbelt job comes open, you know, something where maybe he
- 22:07has some connections down there Conference USAI don't know it.
- 22:10Would he be willing to do that? Heck, it even might be a pay cut
- 22:12at some of those places down there, even at the FCS level.
- 22:15So that's kind of more what I was thinking.
- 22:17And those jobs aren't open yet because of the backfilling that
- 22:20has happened. Yeah, just want to get that one
- 22:21on your radar SIP. I'd have to look at the CA what
- 22:25those teams are paying Like what's the Sunbelt team paying a
- 22:29head coach how you like? I know.
- 22:33Oh, OK, there's one. OK.
- 22:35I can't say. You know, there's some.
- 22:37I was put this. There's some indications that
- 22:40just sprung to my mind, thankfully, that he's not
- 22:43looking. Gotcha.
- 22:45I think that I I there's some pretty good evidence that would
- 22:50suggest that Holgerson's not looking to leave at all.
- 22:53I wouldn't be surprised at all if he's back here.
- 22:55What When it comes to Penn State Zip, are you hearing any names
- 22:59for the Penn State gig? A heart line and then the
- 23:05offensive. The offensive coordinator with
- 23:08the Bills whose name is escaping me.
- 23:10You don't know who it is that that That's the name.
- 23:15Have you heard de Boer from Alabama if he wants to get out
- 23:18ahead of the posse? No, no, I haven't heard that.
- 23:21That'd be remarkable to me. I have.
- 23:25No, I haven't heard that. No, I haven't been paying that
- 23:32close attention to it since. Rule Yeah, ruled it out.
- 23:35Will not because of it. Yeah, rule.
- 23:39Now some people have the reason I I even bring it up is because
- 23:42there's people that have asked me since they only had to pay
- 23:46James Franklin 9,000,000 out the door, would they maybe circle
- 23:50back to a high-priced guy like rule?
- 23:53No, I've heard this week. No, that's not I well, got it.
- 23:58I'm risking looking pretty bad here, but I'd say his rules
- 24:02names off the board and I would say I haven't paid that close
- 24:06attention to it because of that. Joe Brady, the OC with Buffalo,
- 24:10Art with Joe Brady. Yeah.
- 24:12And that was that was Joe Burrows guy at LSU, was it not?
- 24:15Yeah, it was. Yeah, It was when they were at
- 24:17LSU. Sip, Enjoy Croatia.
- 24:20Have a good trip out there. Safe flight there and back.
- 24:24And we will talk to you on Tuesday.
- 24:25I'll text you, SIP. Thanks for doing this buddy.
- 24:28Thank you guys take. Care.
- 24:29Yeah, good to talk to you, Stephen M Simple on Three Media
- 24:32huskerillustrated.com, huskerillustrated.com.
- 24:36Sunbelt jobs, Conference USA jobs, about $1,000,000, about a
- 24:39million, Yeah, for the head coach now, Jamie Chadwell at
- 24:41Liberty, because he's got all those raises to stick around and
- 24:43they got different kind of money there at Liberty.
- 24:45He's up north, $5 billion. But yeah, in general, about
- 24:49$1,000,000. Probably holder since probably
- 24:51making around that range too. But you want to be the head guy,
- 24:55Want to get back in the mix? How old do you think Dana
- 24:57Holgerson is? How old he's?
- 24:5956 He's 54. OK, Iowa guy.
- 25:04Yeah, yes. Started with leeching company at
- 25:06Iowa Wesleyan, Valdosta State. He's been all over the place.
- 25:10He's been a lot of places, no doubt about that.
- 25:13We're going to head to Chicago. When we come back, we'll catch
- 25:16up with the cap man. We'll do some Bears with Cappy.
- 25:19We'll do some Cubs with Cappy. Trent's Plays of the Day, circus
- 25:22sports sponsor, those. We'll get to those coming up
- 25:24here in about 20 minutes. Miller and Condon talking sports
- 25:28with you and we're certainly glad you're with us on the Iowa
- 25:30Sports Radio Network. I'm Miller Condon.
- 25:33Welcome back Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 25:35Trenton, Ken with you until 2 transplays of the day Circus
- 25:39sports sponsor those those coming up in about 15 minutes.
- 25:42Let's head straight to the Windy City.
- 25:44Here's David Kaplan, ESPN 1000 and the recap.
- 25:48That's his YouTube channel and he joins us Capper Trenton.
- 25:51Ken, good to talk to you. I appreciate you coming on.
- 25:53How are things in Chicago Cap? Everything is awesome.
- 25:58Couple things. How am I on the show every week
- 26:01with you guys and Trent has planes of the day?
- 26:05I don't get them. I don't.
- 26:07Know you're lucky. You're lucky you'll be in the
- 26:09red. Wow.
- 26:11And then I find out that Ken Miller has never seen the Blues
- 26:15Brothers. It's baffling.
- 26:17Are you? Like a bot or are you a human?
- 26:19I just not a big movie guy, Cap. You know, I don't know what it
- 26:22is. But it was a movie from the era
- 26:23that you watched. Movies, That doesn't matter.
- 26:25If you're a movie guy, there are certain ones.
- 26:27You go, yeah, I need to see that.
- 26:30All right, Absolutely. Hey, Cap, before we get into the
- 26:35barracks, as I wanted, they're on a great run.
- 26:36They're first place to the NFC North.
- 26:38I'm not sure many people after 10 games saw that coming, but
- 26:41here we are. Shotay Minaga.
- 26:43I've seen conflicting reports from people who may or may not
- 26:47be close to the Cubs. You would know better.
- 26:49Were they disappointed? Were they surprised he's back
- 26:52for his one year? Did that catch the Cubs off
- 26:56guard Cap? I think it did.
- 26:59And if it didn't, I think they made a mistake.
- 27:02That's all. I, I think it's a, you know, a
- 27:05terrible decision. Not that he's not a good human
- 27:09and he's like, no, OK pitcher, he's not great.
- 27:12He's OK. But you're going to pay
- 27:1522,000,022, point O 5 to be exact, for a guy who by your own
- 27:22admission, you said game five, biggest game of our season,
- 27:27biggest game probably since the World Series.
- 27:31And guess what? We can't pitch him.
- 27:33He's not good enough. And so you ended up, you know,
- 27:37bringing back Matt Boyd and whoever the heck else you
- 27:39pitched. You couldn't start a guy you're
- 27:42now paying $22 million for. I don't care what they tell you.
- 27:46I do not believe they thought he was picking up that option.
- 27:50So what does that do as far as what their offseason plans may
- 27:53have been? Does this, you know, stop
- 27:55somebody from them kicking the tires on on a wannabe or on a
- 27:59free agent? Does this stop?
- 28:03Well, let's put it this way. Does it Maybe.
- 28:06Should it? No, Absolutely not.
- 28:08Absolutely not. There is no chance that the
- 28:12Chicago Cubs, with the type of revenue they bring in, should be
- 28:16affected because Shota Imanaga said, yeah, I'm going to pick up
- 28:21the one year option. It's a one year contract and I
- 28:24know people go, well, there's no such thing as a bad one year
- 28:28contract. I'll beg to differ with you.
- 28:30There are some bad one year deals when you know you're on a
- 28:33budget, but for the Cubs that should not affect anything they
- 28:37do. Unfortunately, that's not how
- 28:39they have always behaved. Over to Soldier Field and the
- 28:43Bears as they welcome in the Steelers this week.
- 28:45Chicago, this team winning close games.
- 28:48Now as we have learned in the NFL, Minnesota Vikings a perfect
- 28:52example on a year to year basis, you can't just count on winning
- 28:55all the close games. Kansas City Chiefs are proving
- 28:57the exact same thing this season, but they here and now
- 29:00there's something special that happens in the course of NFL
- 29:02seasons where it just always seems to break your way.
- 29:06Are you getting that feeling that the brakes is just that
- 29:08kind of season that the Bears and that not sustainable for
- 29:1126/27/28, but for this year that it's one of those years that's
- 29:15special and they're going to get those breaks and and because of
- 29:18that, this team's got a real shot come January.
- 29:21Yeah. I don't think it's sustainable.
- 29:23I also don't think they have a + 16 and a turnover margin, which
- 29:28is miles ahead of anyone else in the league.
- 29:31I don't think that's sustainable either.
- 29:33I don't. If you remember in 18, I think
- 29:36they had six defensive touchdowns.
- 29:39And I said that's not going to happen in 2019.
- 29:42And of course it didn't. It wasn't like I it was
- 29:45Nostradamus there. It's just not how it works in
- 29:48the NFL. So I think they have a good
- 29:50team. I think that they're maybe a
- 29:52little ahead of where Ben Johnson thought they might be at
- 29:56this point in time. But you've got to start playing
- 30:00a little bit cleaner football in run defense at times, past
- 30:05defense at times. Like I think this is a really,
- 30:08really interesting game this weekend, whether Rodgers plays
- 30:11or not. I know there are a lot of people
- 30:12in Chicago want Aaron to play so that they feel like they can we
- 30:16beat Aaron Rodgers. I'm not one of them, and I'm a
- 30:19Aaron Rodgers fan. You know, I like that guy.
- 30:22I've never met him. I've never interviewed him.
- 30:24I like him. There's something about him that
- 30:25I like because I like people who say I don't care what you think
- 30:29of me. I'm going to treat people the
- 30:31right way. I'm going to play hard.
- 30:33I'm going to be good at whatever it is I do.
- 30:36But if you don't like my persona, I don't care.
- 30:39I like people like that. Comfortable in his own skin.
- 30:42But if we if we beat the Steelers this weekend and he
- 30:46plays and we beat them like a drum, 41 to nothing, he's still
- 30:5225 and five with the Packers. Doesn't change it.
- 30:56We would have beaten 41 year old Aaron Rodgers with the
- 30:58Pittsburgh Steelers. OK, cool.
- 31:00I'm glad we won. I want to get to 8 and three.
- 31:02That's all I care about, but it still doesn't change the fact
- 31:05that he owned our ass with with the Green Bay Packers.
- 31:08No, he really did. Well, that saves me asking.
- 31:10One of our listeners reached out and wanted me to ask that for
- 31:12you. Your affection for Rogers.
- 31:14I, I'm with. He's a hell of a quarterback.
- 31:16He's a weird duck. Not sure he's married.
- 31:17Says he is, but nobody's seen his wife to this point.
- 31:20But more power. Pretty weird.
- 31:22My producer Shane Orling at ESPN, he thinks that his wife is
- 31:26an AI bot. That's what he believes.
- 31:28He could be absolutely right, wouldn't be a bit bit surprised
- 31:301 little bit. And you're right.
- 31:32He absolutely did own the Bears is a member of the Green Bay
- 31:35Packers and I believe he'll do everything he can in order to
- 31:38try and play. So cap as you look forward after
- 31:41this week, I mean, there's a it gets Black Friday in
- 31:44Philadelphia. That's going to be no picnic.
- 31:46You've still got I mean, if the schedule is very tough before it
- 31:51comes, he's still got to go to the Packers and and go to the
- 31:53Packers, host the Packers. You got the Niners in San
- 31:56Francisco Lions on the following week.
- 31:59You said 10 in order to get into the playoffs.
- 32:01What is it going to win take to win the division cap?
- 32:04Is does 11 and six get you the NFC North?
- 32:10Probably does if you beat the Especially if two of those wins
- 32:14are over. Detroit in Chicago and Green Bay
- 32:18split with Yeah, if you do that and you win 11 games, yeah,
- 32:22which means you would probably. Beat the Browns.
- 32:26Probably beat the Browns, and then you still have to go to
- 32:28Philly and you got to go San Fran, San Francisco.
- 32:33So if you found a way to get to 11 wins and you have victories
- 32:38over the Lions and the Packers coming up, Yep.
- 32:41Yeah, I think you can win the division.
- 32:42I do. One of the more happy things
- 32:45that I've seen here recently has been the emergence of Luther
- 32:48Burden. I had a unhealthy infatuation
- 32:51with him at Missouri. Love that dude and when the
- 32:53Bears drafted him I got excited. Now Zacchaeus good solid
- 32:56veteran, but the drops had started to pile up for him.
- 33:00But back-to-back plays a couple of weeks ago and now Luther
- 33:02Burton feels like the training wheels are off for him.
- 33:05How much more can he add to this offense kind of going forward?
- 33:09And with a Doonese being banged up, it's football.
- 33:12A lot of guys are going to be banged up at this point.
- 33:14A relatively healthy and fresh, if you will, Luther Burden.
- 33:17What could that mean to this passing offense?
- 33:19Oh, I think a lot. I think he's Tommy Waddle
- 33:21Believes he might be right now. Their best receiver.
- 33:25Wow, which is a big statement. Tommy was a very, very precise
- 33:31route runner. Tommy was never going to, you
- 33:34know, beat you with his top end speed.
- 33:36I think he ran A4740 for A at his pro day and he became a
- 33:42outstanding NFL receiver. But he was never going to be the
- 33:45guy that's going to beat you with Tyree kill like breakaway
- 33:49speed. But he loves guys that run
- 33:53correct routes. I'll remember this.
- 33:55There was a guy named Joaquin Iglesias from Oklahoma.
- 33:58Bears draft him in the third round.
- 34:00We go out to training camp. We're working together.
- 34:04This is years ago. We go out to training camp.
- 34:07We literally walk up to the field and they're going through
- 34:11drills. We watch maybe 5 minutes, maybe
- 34:15they haven't even started all the team portion of the stuff.
- 34:18Waddle watches him catch the ball, watches him run around,
- 34:21turns to me and my producer, Mike Ferron is now on MLB
- 34:24Network radio and he goes, what round?
- 34:27We take that kid in. I said third, he goes, no
- 34:31chance. He makes it.
- 34:32He's terrible. And of course he was cut a year
- 34:34later. I'm like, what did you see?
- 34:36He goes watch how he measures his route off, watch where his
- 34:39hand position is. Tommy was telling us the other
- 34:42night, what do you think you catch the ball with?
- 34:44I already know the answer because I've been best friends
- 34:47with him for, you know, 20 years.
- 34:49And somebody said, well, you catch it with your chest.
- 34:52He said wrong. Somebody else said, we catch it
- 34:55with your hand wrong. You catch the football with your
- 34:58eyes. He said.
- 35:00You track Jack it with your eyes, you look it into your
- 35:02hands, he goes. And that's what Luther Burden
- 35:04does as well as anybody he's seen in a long time.
- 35:07Cap, we're out of time brother. Hopefully Tuesday at 1:00 will
- 35:11work for you. OK, as we got a.
- 35:13Short day at 1:00. O'clock, yes.
- 35:16Tuesday at one, I'm in. Good.
- 35:17I'll text you. Thank you, buddy.
- 35:19We'll talk to you then. Have a great.
- 35:20Weekend Cap, Blues Brothers and report back.
- 35:23Got some more work? See you buddy David Kaplan
- 35:26joining us Centurion Stone of Iowa sponsors Cappy on a every
- 35:31week basis, normally on Wednesday, but he had an event
- 35:33that kept him away from our program yesterday.
- 35:36If you're in the market for manufactured or natural stone
- 35:39project inside the house or outside the house, any size
- 35:42project Centurion stone, there's over 200 different color and
- 35:45pattern combinations. They've also got natural stone,
- 35:48of course, if that's what you prefer, but they're Centurion
- 35:52stone that's their own manufactured.
- 35:54It has the look and feel of a natural stone.
- 35:58Miller and Condon will be back with Trent's plays of the day
- 36:01Circus sports sponsor. Those you're listening to, the
- 36:03Iowa Sports Radio Network. Nick Condon, welcome back.
- 36:07Iowa Sports Radio Network. Trenton, Ken with you.
- 36:11Well, for another couple of minutes, Circus sports sponsor
- 36:13Trench Plays of the day. Yeah, Cap, you're doing him a
- 36:15favor this month. Yeah.
- 36:16Yeah. I mean, there's been ties.
- 36:17Yeah man, we bounced back this week. 5 and O Tuesday, 2:00 and
- 36:201:00 last night. Boy, and now the Baylor, Iowa,
- 36:23Baylor game is up. I was favored.
- 36:25I was favored. I'm 3.
- 36:27And a half the DraftKings. Crap in the points.
- 36:30That was a surprise to me. Now.
- 36:32When I first saw it, I thought Baylor was favored because I saw
- 36:35an opener. I thought it was 1 1/2.
- 36:37Yeah, I didn't see anything. There's some steam coming in.
- 36:39Yeah, I'm going to jump aboard on the other side.
- 36:42Give me the Baylor Bears with one of my picks and this one, by
- 36:45the way, Iowa State 19 1/2 point favorite tonight at Drake in
- 36:49where? Do you find in that at circa?
- 36:51That's at DraftKings that I have open right now and yeah, I'll
- 36:56see if I can open up some. Not on wager talk, that's why I
- 36:59was asking. Do have a couple other plays,
- 37:01though, coming up this evening, starting with the Iowa men,
- 37:05Chicago State's. Oh, and five.
- 37:07They're bad. Chicago State, year after a year
- 37:10after year, is one of the worst teams in all of college
- 37:12basketball. Schedule put.
- 37:13Them. On there and blow them out.
- 37:16I'm going to lay the 32 1/2. And that is a Big 10 network
- 37:20plus. That's a BTN plus and I'm going
- 37:23to grab the Texans tonight. The points, 5 1/2.
- 37:25I think it's going to be ugly Thursday night.
- 37:28Quick turn around at home, a Buffalo defense traveling and
- 37:31gets a backup quarterback. This thing is going to be gross.
- 37:33It's going to be some bad football like 1613, you know,
- 37:36something like that. Think it's going to be an ugly
- 37:381. Allen will do enough to win it,
- 37:40but we'll grab the points with the Texans.
- 37:41And then Josh Allen will get on a plane and fly to Wyoming,
- 37:44where they will retire his jersey on Saturday. #17 Yep, 17
- 37:49remember it. Kinnick Stadium, him coming to
- 37:51town. That's wild, isn't it?
- 37:52Him and Rob Roethlisberger. And there's a couple throws in a
