- 0:00Speaker 1: LUTs three cents. Hollywood the Nuts Radio Theater brings you
- 0:16Speaker 1: William Powell and Murna mooy An acted in Man, Ladies
- 0:20Speaker 1: and Gentlemen, Your producer, mister Cecil D. De mil greetings
- 0:31Speaker 1: from Hollywood, Ladies and Gentlemen. When Edgar Allan Poe popularized
- 0:36Speaker 1: the Detective story, he found the great common denominator of
- 0:39Speaker 1: American entertainment. Millions of us have stayed up past bedtime
- 0:43Speaker 1: to explore the fascinating realm of who done it, including
- 0:47Speaker 1: the President of the United States. And you can find
- 0:50Speaker 1: devotees in every walk of life rich man, poor man, beggar, man, thief,
- 0:54Speaker 1: and probably policeman too. Perhaps we haven't investigated this branch
- 0:58Speaker 1: of the drama quite as often as we should in
- 1:01Speaker 1: the Lux Radio Theater, but when we do engage a
- 1:03Speaker 1: man hunter, we get the very best. Tonight, our play
- 1:08Speaker 1: is After the Thin Man, adapted from the MGM picture
- 1:11Speaker 1: and naturally starring the same two players that go with
- 1:15Speaker 1: a thin Man story, Myrna Lay and William Powell. It's
- 1:19Speaker 1: an occasion for great rejoicing, but we also must hang
- 1:23Speaker 1: our heads a little because it's exactly four years since
- 1:26Speaker 1: Miss Lloyd was last at this microphone. There's more to
- 1:30Speaker 1: the story of After the Thin Man than just the
- 1:32Speaker 1: exciting quest of a criminal, because our detective is the
- 1:36Speaker 1: extraordinary Nick Charles. And Nick has a lovely wife named Nora.
- 1:41Speaker 1: They happen to be very much in love, but even
- 1:43Speaker 1: love can't keep Nora from interfering with her husband's business.
- 1:47Speaker 1: When she has an idea, and Nora is a girl
- 1:50Speaker 1: with many ideas. Together, they can solve just about any
- 1:53Speaker 1: problem you give them. But you don't really need a
- 1:56Speaker 1: detective to discover that lux Flakes is the simple answer
- 1:59Speaker 1: to the household problems. It's a deduction that millions of
- 2:03Speaker 1: women have made after giving lux Flakes a trial. Now,
- 2:07Speaker 1: if your wits have been thoroughly sharpened and you're ready
- 2:10Speaker 1: for anything to happen, we raised the curtain on the
- 2:13Speaker 1: first act of After the Thin Man, starring William Powell
- 2:16Speaker 1: as Nick Charles and Mina Loy as Norah Railroad Station
- 2:26Speaker 1: in San Francisco. Into the dim maze of tracks, rolls
- 2:29Speaker 1: a mighty streamliner, sleek and shining after its mad dash
- 2:33Speaker 1: across the country. For the final throb of its powerful engines,
- 2:37Speaker 1: it comes to rest from the gate, tumbles a crowd
- 2:39Speaker 1: of reporters and photographers. They rush breathlessly up and down
- 2:43Speaker 1: the length of the platform, eager to be the first
- 2:45Speaker 1: to greet the arriving celebrities. Mister and missus Nick.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Charles, Darthian.
- 2:51Speaker 1: He's popping a car. There is Nick Charles and his car.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Charles cars back?
- 2:57Speaker 3: Olly is hey, Nate? Hello? Ricky?
- 2:59Speaker 1: How does it feel you're going to stay with zu guys?

- 3:08Speaker 1: my wife, how do you do? How's about a statement?
- 3:11Speaker 4: Nick?
- 3:11Speaker 1: Are you going to keep on with your detective for no? Gentlemen,
- 3:14Speaker 1: I've retired now on. I'm just going to take care
- 3:16Speaker 1: of my wife's money, so i'll have something in my
- 3:18Speaker 1: old lad Oh, you said you'd retired before, but I
- 3:21Speaker 1: know that you took that thin man case in New York.
- 3:23Speaker 1: That thin man was abute. They're still talking about it.
- 3:25Speaker 1: You'd take a case like that, now, wouldn't you? Not
- 3:26Speaker 1: a chance? I just took back to please my wife.
- 3:28Speaker 1: She wanted some excitement. Well I guess you had it.
- 3:30Speaker 4: Mister Charles.
- 3:31Speaker 5: Oh, it was wonderful.
- 3:32Speaker 6: Two men tried to kill him, but he's not going
- 3:35Speaker 6: to take any more cases.
- 3:36Speaker 7: You could print that.
- 3:37Speaker 1: That's the girl. So long, gentlemen, come on, darling, get
- 3:39Speaker 1: very nice.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Good bye.
- 3:43Speaker 5: Nice to met you.
- 3:44Speaker 7: Tick, slow down, I can't.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Keep up with the gun. Excuse me, lady. I guess
- 3:48Speaker 1: I wasn't looking where I was going.
- 3:50Speaker 7: No, I guess you were.

- 4:06Speaker 1: your wife say, I didn't know she? Oh, I'm sorry
- 4:12Speaker 1: about your price, missus Charles.

- 4:31Speaker 1: Come on, now, come on, you don't want to embarrass him,
- 4:34Speaker 1: do you? What do you mean, Fingers, he's a purse snatcher.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Think of his feelings?
- 4:37Speaker 7: A purse snatcher?
- 4:39Speaker 1: Well, he must have taken it certainly. But you see,
- 4:41Speaker 1: he didn't know you were my wife. You'll get it
- 4:42Speaker 1: back in the morning, mail lolling. He's a very honest pickbucket.
- 4:46Speaker 7: Oh, Nick, you do know the nicest people.

- 10:43Speaker 10: However, to please I thought you might investigate the matter
- 10:45Speaker 10: quietly with your experience as a as a flat foot.
- 10:49Speaker 7: And I didn't mean to be as blunt as that.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Why not, it's all in the family, Selma.

- 12:16Speaker 1: you try and meet me later.
- 12:17Speaker 7: I'm great. She won't be able to make it. Did
- 12:19Speaker 7: you know that Robin had disappeared?
- 12:21Speaker 1: If he has, it's the only decent thing he's ever done.
- 12:23Speaker 1: What's he been up to lately, David? The last thing
- 12:25Speaker 1: he pulled one? It was a couple of days ago,
- 12:27Speaker 1: called up and said that.
- 12:28Speaker 2: If I'd give him twenty five thousand dollars, he'd go
- 12:30Speaker 2: away and leave some to meat.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Lovely boy, what did you say? I asked him to
- 12:34Speaker 1: give me a couple of days to think it over.

- 29:18Speaker 7: killed Robert. She wanted me to tell him that she didn't.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Well, I can't imagine how she could think a thing
- 29:22Speaker 1: like that. It's ridiculous. I haven't seen her for a
- 29:25Speaker 1: couple of days.
- 29:25Speaker 2: There's missus Lander's buss. No, will you come in, missus Landers?
- 29:29Speaker 7: David. Oh, I didn't want you dragged into this.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Oh no, it's all right, dear missus Landis.
- 29:33Speaker 15: Why did mister Graham think you killed your husband?
- 29:36Speaker 1: I never said that.
- 29:36Speaker 2: I never fought it for one minute.
- 29:38Speaker 7: Oh, David, he had every right to think I did it.
- 29:40Speaker 7: He's just trying to protect me. He heard a shot.
- 29:42Speaker 11: He rushed up to me and saw me standing near
- 29:44Speaker 11: Robert with a gun.
- 29:45Speaker 7: In my hand.
- 29:46Speaker 3: But I didn't fire a shot.
- 29:47Speaker 7: It came from the street.
- 29:48Speaker 1: You mean you didn't kill anything.
- 29:50Speaker 7: No, look at the gun, David. It hasn't been fired.
- 29:53Speaker 1: Oh, Selma forgive me, of course, I forgive you. Well,
- 29:57Speaker 1: that's all cleared up. Oh, Laura, it isn't it up.
- 30:00Speaker 1: As far as I'm concerned.
- 30:01Speaker 2: I've got to have something more than that. Where's that gun?
- 30:03Speaker 1: Missus lambdis I've got to see that gun?
- 30:05Speaker 11: Well, I haven't got it. Why well, David took it
- 30:08Speaker 11: from me. David, where's the gun?
- 30:11Speaker 7: What is it?
- 30:11Speaker 1: David? So much? I thought you were guilty. I thought
- 30:15Speaker 1: I was doing the only thing. I threw it away.
- 30:17Speaker 3: You threw it away.
- 30:17Speaker 1: I threw it into the river. Oh that's marvelous.
- 30:20Speaker 2: But they can get it. I'll show them why I
- 30:21Speaker 2: threw it. I'll get Diaverst to go on after it.
- 30:23Speaker 1: They'll find it. They must showy.
- 30:25Speaker 2: She don't want that gun back anymore than you do.
- 30:28Speaker 15: Heym swear out a ward for the arrest of missus
- 30:31Speaker 15: Robert Lamb.
- 30:31Speaker 2: This, I'm suspicion of murder.
- 30:40Speaker 7: Nikki, Nikki, are you awake?
- 30:44Speaker 1: Mm hm no, no, I'm not.
- 30:47Speaker 7: Oh I thought you were. Did you say something about
- 30:52Speaker 7: scrambled eggs?
- 30:53Speaker 1: No, no, I haven't. Ah, I suppose that means you'd
- 30:58Speaker 1: like me to fix some oil.
- 31:01Speaker 7: Oh no, I don't care about them.
- 31:03Speaker 1: Sure, really good, good.
- 31:05Speaker 7: Night, good night.
- 31:07Speaker 8: After all, if I want scrambled eggs, I can get
- 31:09Speaker 8: them for myself.
- 31:11Speaker 7: Of course, I'm not as good a cook as you are. Oh,
- 31:14Speaker 7: I don't bother about me. You go on sleeping. I
- 31:18Speaker 7: love to watch your sleep.
- 31:20Speaker 8: He looks so cute, Nikki. Have you any pictures of
- 31:25Speaker 8: yourself taken as a baby.
- 31:27Speaker 7: No, Oh, that's a shame. I wanted to see what
- 31:31Speaker 7: you look like.
- 31:32Speaker 1: I have one taken in the morning.
- 31:35Speaker 7: Poor Selma, Poor David.
- 31:38Speaker 3: Nikki. Can you reach the water?
- 31:40Speaker 7: Huh?
- 31:41Speaker 1: Oh yeah I thought so. Yeah.
- 31:45Speaker 7: Oh I didn't want it. I just wanted to be
- 31:47Speaker 7: sure you could reach it.
- 31:52Speaker 1: Please go to sleep.
- 31:53Speaker 8: I can't I keep thinking of Selma down in that jail, Darling.
- 31:57Speaker 1: There's nothing to worry about. Come on, they'll find the gun.
- 32:02Speaker 1: It won't have been fired. Salo will be free.
- 32:06Speaker 7: Then you don't think she did it for the tenth time. No,
- 32:10Speaker 7: you're not saying that just to make me happy. You
- 32:12Speaker 7: really mean it.
- 32:13Speaker 1: I mean it.
- 32:14Speaker 7: Of course you're right. She didn't do it. She couldn't
- 32:17Speaker 7: have done it. I don't think I'd kill you if
- 32:20Speaker 7: you ran off of another woman.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Thank you, darling, I might though. No, h don't be morbid.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Go to sleep. The name up the window.
- 32:33Speaker 6: Keep your head down, Nick, somebody smash the window. No really,
- 32:37Speaker 6: Look there's a rock with a note a catch to it.
- 32:41Speaker 10: Make you a note.
- 32:42Speaker 1: Let's see what is it?
- 32:43Speaker 7: What does it say? Mm?
- 32:45Speaker 1: Silly little woman? I told her to stop writing for me.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Please read it, mister Nick Charles. If you want to
- 32:54Speaker 1: know something about the murder of Robert landis get a
- 32:57Speaker 1: line on fell Burns. The guy probably says a brother.
- 33:01Speaker 1: He's an ex KHN and was married to Polly in
- 33:03Speaker 1: the Peak of Kansas three years ago.
- 33:05Speaker 7: Married three years ago.
- 33:07Speaker 1: What are we supposed to do is send him an
- 33:08Speaker 1: anniversary present. Look in the way this fellow spells to
- 33:12Speaker 1: peak at t O P E K E R.
- 33:16Speaker 7: What's the matter with that?
- 33:20Speaker 1: Nothing, darling?
- 33:21Speaker 7: Don oh, Nick, you can't go back to sleep now,
- 33:24Speaker 7: Ohn Abrams.
- 33:25Speaker 1: W didn't have him here keeping us up all night.
- 33:27Speaker 7: Oh don't you see?
- 33:29Speaker 6: If Phil is her husband, then he shot Robert because
- 33:31Speaker 6: he found out about him and Polly.
- 33:33Speaker 1: Oh, Nick, you've got to call him just as you say.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Can you heard me? The phone.
- 33:38Speaker 7: Oh isn't it wonderful? Everything's working out beautifully. All we
- 33:41Speaker 7: have to do is find this fellow Phil Burns. If
- 33:43Speaker 7: we got the murderer here, Darling, call him and jo
- 33:48Speaker 7: Now who can that be?
- 33:50Speaker 15: Oh?
- 33:51Speaker 2: Hello, Nick?
- 33:53Speaker 1: Oh, I'm just gonna call you. Yeah, well, maybe you're
- 33:55Speaker 1: better get down here. You know that guy Phil burned Polly?
- 33:59Speaker 1: What about him?
- 34:00Speaker 2: Traced them to his hotel? You find him?
- 34:02Speaker 12: Yeah, when somebody else found him faced, he spent, Well,
- 34:15Speaker 12: there he is.
- 34:16Speaker 15: That's the way we found him. Nick, dead for two
- 34:18Speaker 15: hours at least strangled.
- 34:20Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like he was beating up a bit before
- 34:22Speaker 1: the strangling set him, and he think of prints.
- 34:24Speaker 2: All over the place. We're checking on him.
- 34:26Speaker 1: Now, what else do you find him?
- 34:27Speaker 7: Now?
- 34:27Speaker 2: Let him much.
- 34:28Speaker 15: He had a thirty eight in his drawer, six bullets
- 34:30Speaker 15: in it and a little dog.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Oh yeah, this key.
- 34:33Speaker 15: I guess it's the key to Polly's apartment. It's got
- 34:35Speaker 15: her number stamp on it.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Another good guess would be that some of the Landers
- 34:39Speaker 1: didn't do.
- 34:39Speaker 15: This fair enough, But he wasn't killed the way Landers
- 34:42Speaker 15: was either.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Might be a good idea to check the chambers on
- 34:45Speaker 1: that thirty eight. He might have fired it and slipped
- 34:47Speaker 1: in a new shell.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Okay, anything else on your mind?
- 34:51Speaker 1: Yes, a key to Polly's apartment? Could I buy that
- 34:54Speaker 1: for an hour?
- 34:54Speaker 7: Sure? Here?
- 34:55Speaker 1: Maybe I better give me a skeleton key too, that's
- 34:57Speaker 1: for good measure.
- 34:58Speaker 2: Okay, what do you look at?
- 35:00Speaker 1: And the faintest side there? Just a hunch? Cary later?
- 35:03Speaker 7: Okay, Nick, what did you find in there?
- 35:08Speaker 1: Dead man?
- 35:09Speaker 7: Is that all?
- 35:11Speaker 1: Isn't that enough?
- 35:12Speaker 7: Where are we going now?
- 35:13Speaker 1: Well? I don't know about you. I'm going to visit
- 35:16Speaker 1: Polly Burns at.
- 35:17Speaker 7: This time of night without a chaperone, Nora.
- 35:20Speaker 1: This is purely business for me too.
- 35:23Speaker 7: Come on, she's not home. Miss Burns keeps late hours,
- 35:38Speaker 7: doesn't you. Nick?
- 35:40Speaker 1: Where'd you get that key from Abrams? It was in
- 35:43Speaker 1: Phil Burns's pocket.
- 35:45Speaker 7: Oh it's good you have an answer for that.
- 35:48Speaker 1: Go on in be quiet.
- 35:51Speaker 7: Here's a light switch, you turn it on. What do
- 35:53Speaker 7: you expect to find in here?
- 35:55Speaker 1: I don't know?
- 35:55Speaker 7: Well, how do I know what to look for?
- 35:57Speaker 1: Don't look for anything over there and sit down.
- 36:00Speaker 7: I suppose she comes in.
- 36:01Speaker 1: What do we do? Thought, that's a surprise party.
- 36:04Speaker 7: Anything in the doors?
- 36:05Speaker 1: They give me a chance?
- 36:08Speaker 7: What do you suppose people want a hole in the ceiling.
- 36:11Speaker 1: They don't, some people do.
- 36:13Speaker 7: Look up there where up there? See in the corner
- 36:19Speaker 7: a little hole in the plastic. What could that mean?
- 36:21Speaker 1: Well, it might mean that the ceiling's falling down, or
- 36:24Speaker 1: it might what watch the numb at this apartment?
- 36:29Speaker 7: Three D?
- 36:30Speaker 1: I who lives in an apartment four D? Let's go
- 36:33Speaker 1: upstairs and find out.
- 36:39Speaker 7: Here it is four D. This is right over Polly
- 36:43Speaker 7: Burne's apartment.
- 36:44Speaker 1: What's the name on the bell?
- 36:45Speaker 7: Uh? Anderson? Say where did you dig up all these keys?
- 36:51Speaker 8: We're gonna visit mister Anderson or miss Anderson? It doesn't
- 36:54Speaker 8: say which. Anybody home.
- 36:57Speaker 1: Put on the light. Let's see not holding the ceiling downstairs?
- 37:02Speaker 1: Us right under this corner. I'm like, these floorboards ought
- 37:06Speaker 1: to be loose.
- 37:09Speaker 7: I get it. Somebody took this apartment so they could
- 37:11Speaker 7: see what went on downstairs exactly. Look through the hole, Nikki,
- 37:15Speaker 7: what do you see? Well, that's funny. What is it?
- 37:19Speaker 4: You can't see anything? It's the hole has been plugged
- 37:22Speaker 4: up from the other side. What but how somebody down
- 37:25Speaker 4: there now, somebody who knows about this, people whoever it is,
- 37:29Speaker 4: plugged it up While we were coming upstairs.
- 37:31Speaker 8: Nick, you stay here, No, Niked, maybe the murderer, NICKI wait, got.
- 37:35Speaker 1: To see what it is.
- 37:39Speaker 7: Listen, whoever it is just left. I can hear him
- 37:42Speaker 7: going downstairs.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Nick, let him go, all right, better catch him before
- 37:46Speaker 1: he gets the street.
- 37:47Speaker 7: Nick, wait for me. Well did you see who it was?
- 37:57Speaker 1: He went through that door at the end of the
- 37:58Speaker 1: hall that must go to the Wait here and don't move.
- 38:03Speaker 7: Nick, be careful. It's black as pitch down there, right
- 38:06Speaker 7: black Dolly?
- 38:14Speaker 1: Would you like to come on upstairs? Don't I have
- 38:17Speaker 1: to come and get you? All right? How about your way?
- 38:27Speaker 1: Come on? I can see you over there.
- 38:30Speaker 7: Come on, Nick, Nick, are you all right?
- 38:39Speaker 1: I'm okay, come on now.
- 38:43Speaker 7: I can't see if he didn't get you.
- 38:45Speaker 1: Oh, but I didn't get him either.
- 38:47Speaker 2: You got I'll throw a window over there.
- 38:49Speaker 7: Oh Dolly, I'm so scared. Where are you? Oh? Put
- 38:54Speaker 7: your arms round me, though. Are you sure you're all right? Oh?
- 38:58Speaker 5: Nikki, you're bleeding?
- 39:00Speaker 1: What are you talking about? I'm not bleeding?
- 39:02Speaker 7: Nay?
- 39:03Speaker 3: Where are you?
- 39:04Speaker 1: I'm here?
- 39:06Speaker 3: Then? Who's this man over here?
- 39:22Speaker 1: You had just heard act After the Thin Men with
- 39:25Speaker 1: William Paul and Rna Loy. During this brief intermission before
- 39:28Speaker 1: mister DeMille presents Act three. We bring you another story
- 39:32Speaker 1: about Mary. She's washing dishes. Oh boy, is she mad?
- 39:41Speaker 1: I say, look at her hands. They're all red, of course.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Here let's see your soap. Mary. Oh, it's harsh and soap.
- 39:56Speaker 7: That's harsh.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Pecks away at your hands, no wonder, they're red and rough.
- 40:02Speaker 1: Here's a friendly tip. Try new quick Lucks. It's so
- 40:06Speaker 1: kind to your hands, so mild, so pure. I want
- 40:14Speaker 1: you to hear about our one hand test of five
- 40:16Speaker 1: dish washing soaps, including Lucks. Now here's the story in
- 40:19Speaker 1: the words of one of the women who took the test.
- 40:21Speaker 1: It is you, Rennie of New York.
- 40:23Speaker 10: She says, for twenty minutes, three times a day, that's
- 40:27Speaker 10: just about the time I spend doing my own dishes.
- 40:30Speaker 10: I dipped one hand in Luck SuDS and the other
- 40:33Speaker 10: in SuDS from another soap.
- 40:34Speaker 1: Missus Rennie took that test for several weeks under conditions
- 40:38Speaker 1: similar to home dish washing. She goes on to say, at.
- 40:41Speaker 10: The end of the test, my Luck's hand was still
- 40:44Speaker 10: nice and smooth, while the other hand was.
- 40:46Speaker 7: Coarse and red.
- 40:48Speaker 10: I hadn't realized there was such a difference in dish
- 40:50Speaker 10: washing soaps. I'll never use anything but Lucks.
- 40:54Speaker 1: Hundreds of women took that one hand test with similar results.
- 40:58Speaker 1: It proved Lucks kindest to hands. Try it yourself and
- 41:01Speaker 1: see Ask for the generous large box of New Quick
- 41:04Speaker 1: Lucks tomorrow and use it for dishes every day. It's
- 41:08Speaker 1: so thrifty, even in hard water. It gives more suns
- 41:13Speaker 1: ounce for ounce than any of ten other leading soaps tested.
- 41:17Speaker 1: It's fast too, yet it costs you no more. Remember
- 41:22Speaker 1: New Quick Lucks in the same familiar box. We pause
- 41:27Speaker 1: now for station identification. This is the Columbia Broadcasting System.
- 41:52Speaker 1: The curtain rises and Act three of after the thin man.
- 42:01Speaker 1: In the thick blackness of the cellar, Nora has bumped
- 42:04Speaker 1: into a man she thought was Nick. Now she discovers
- 42:07Speaker 1: her mistake, and Nick rushes to her side with quick,
- 42:10Speaker 1: tense fingers. He strikes a match. There in the wavering light,
- 42:15Speaker 1: a man stands dropped against the wall. As they stare
- 42:19Speaker 1: at his gleaming white face, he slumps to the floor
- 42:22Speaker 1: at their feet. Nick, all right, take it easy.
- 42:26Speaker 7: What's the matter with him? Is he?
- 42:28Speaker 1: Is he dead shot?
- 42:31Speaker 7: When? When was he? I've seen that man before you
- 42:36Speaker 7: know him? Who is he? Light? Another match? Quick?
- 42:40Speaker 15: Well?
- 42:41Speaker 7: Of course I know. His name is Pedro Domingus. He
- 42:44Speaker 7: used to be my father's gardener about six years ago.
- 42:47Speaker 1: Your father's gardener.
- 42:49Speaker 16: Wow, that does a lot of good. Come on, we
- 42:52Speaker 16: better call Abrams. What'd you find out, Lieutenant?
- 43:01Speaker 7: Was that right about his name?
- 43:03Speaker 15: Yes, you want Missus Chiles Pedro Domingus, But he wasn't
- 43:06Speaker 15: a gardener anymore. He was janitor of this building. Probably
- 43:09Speaker 15: shot about five hours before you father.
- 43:11Speaker 1: But he's a very funny thing. Go ahead, we can
- 43:14Speaker 1: stand alive right now.
- 43:15Speaker 15: The telephone company tells us that at about eleven thirty
- 43:18Speaker 15: last night, that it'd be just before he was shot.
- 43:21Speaker 15: Someone here called up information and asked for Nick Charles's.
- 43:23Speaker 7: Number, our number. What would Pedro Domingus be calling Nick for?
- 43:28Speaker 2: I don't know, are you Nick?
- 43:29Speaker 1: I can't imagine. I haven't even heard his name for
- 43:31Speaker 1: six years.
- 43:32Speaker 15: Did you remember him when he saw his face? Now
- 43:34Speaker 15: that's funny seeing he used to be Missus Chiles's gardener.
- 43:38Speaker 1: Who remembers the gardener unless he squirts the hose at you?
- 43:41Speaker 2: Did you recognize him right away?
- 43:43Speaker 7: Missus Charles? I had to look twice. He's a lot
- 43:45Speaker 7: grayer than he used to be.
- 43:46Speaker 1: By the way, what do you find out about the
- 43:48Speaker 1: person in the apartment over polly Burns?
- 43:51Speaker 2: Not a thing, not a fingerprint in the place, not
- 43:53Speaker 2: a stitch of clothes. Only a hunkle lead pipe.
- 43:55Speaker 1: And a ladder, he said, lead pipe and a ladder.
- 43:58Speaker 1: That's interesting anything in Pato's books.
- 44:01Speaker 15: Now, Just that someone named Dan Lierson took the apartment
- 44:04Speaker 15: a week ago.
- 44:04Speaker 1: Pay cash in advance. That's all, that's all.
- 44:07Speaker 15: And the name is Anderson, no front name, no mister
- 44:11Speaker 15: missus or miss.
- 44:12Speaker 1: That's just dandy.
- 44:14Speaker 7: You know.
- 44:14Speaker 1: I've had a feeling that if we could just find
- 44:16Speaker 1: out who took that room, we might have our murderer.
- 44:19Speaker 2: Well what do you think we ought to do?
- 44:21Speaker 1: Get them all together in the Anderson apartment. Everyone that's
- 44:24Speaker 1: mixed up in this. Let's shake them all up and
- 44:26Speaker 1: see what happens.
- 44:27Speaker 7: Yer on, are you going to take the murderer tonight?
- 44:30Speaker 1: We're going to try.
- 44:32Speaker 7: How are you going to do it? Nikki?
- 44:33Speaker 1: I have the slightest tie there. I'm just going to listen,
- 44:36Speaker 1: pray that somebody makes a slip, just one slip, you
- 44:50Speaker 1: got it?
- 44:51Speaker 2: Get them all here, all set and waiting. Nick picked
- 44:54Speaker 2: up Dancer and lump Key at the light. Chief probably
- 44:56Speaker 2: was with them.
- 44:57Speaker 15: Then there's that David Grahame guy and your wife's cousin
- 45:00Speaker 15: sell my lands anyone else?
- 45:01Speaker 2: Yeah, a fat day they call it Catlin. I've brought
- 45:04Speaker 2: him along for luck.
- 45:05Speaker 1: Swell. Oh, say, before you go in, I checked Phil
- 45:08Speaker 1: Pin's apartment.
- 45:09Speaker 2: Dances, finger prints, we're.
- 45:10Speaker 1: All over the joint dancers. You sure sure? I'm sure
- 45:14Speaker 1: you haven't told him, have you not yet? All right,
- 45:16Speaker 1: don't watch your plan, Nick, build up a case against
- 45:20Speaker 1: each other. Throw all we've got at them, and throw
- 45:22Speaker 1: it hard enough to bounce. I'll make it bounce, all right,
- 45:25Speaker 1: and keep them talking, Nick.
- 45:28Speaker 7: Come on, the party is getting dark coming.
- 45:31Speaker 1: See shut that door please, it's enough. Sure, ladies and gentlemen.
- 45:41Speaker 1: I asked you all down here because we've just found
- 45:44Speaker 1: that another murder has been committed. He's a man. I
- 45:47Speaker 1: think you all know Pedro Domingez Pedro killed. Yes, what
- 45:52Speaker 1: do you know about it, Polly nothing?
- 45:54Speaker 7: I only saw him a couple of times when I
- 45:55Speaker 7: went down to pay my rent.
- 45:57Speaker 1: What about you dancing? You're in and out of this apartment.
- 45:59Speaker 1: You must have known him, sure I know him. So
- 46:02Speaker 1: what you lumkey, I'd about Finger's house before you.
- 46:06Speaker 7: Knew him Selma? I, well, no, I don't think I
- 46:09Speaker 7: remember Selma. He was our gardener six years ago. Oh, David,
- 46:13Speaker 7: you remember Pedro Domingus.
- 46:15Speaker 1: Yes, vaguely, a man with long white mustaches. What did
- 46:17Speaker 1: you know about him, mister Graham. Nothing, that was six
- 46:20Speaker 1: years ago. I haven't seen him since, Nicholas.
- 46:22Speaker 7: I can't see what possible connection this can have with us.
- 46:25Speaker 1: It's very simple, and Catherine, you see, Pedro and Robert
- 46:29Speaker 1: were both shot with the same gun. There was some
- 46:34Speaker 1: monkey business going on we want to find out about it.
- 46:37Speaker 1: Seems that one week ago Pedro rendered an apartment to
- 46:40Speaker 1: someone calling himself or herself Anderson. Did you ever see
- 46:45Speaker 1: this Anderson?
- 46:46Speaker 7: Polly?
- 46:46Speaker 1: No, did you ever hear anyone in the apartment just
- 46:49Speaker 1: over you?
- 46:50Speaker 7: No?
- 46:50Speaker 1: I thought not. Miss Anderson intended to climb down into
- 46:54Speaker 1: your apartment one night with the aid of a ladder
- 46:56Speaker 1: and Polly show off Robert with this lead pipe. Then
- 47:00Speaker 1: he was going to climb up to his place again
- 47:02Speaker 1: and leave you holding the bag for Robert's murder. Now
- 47:05Speaker 1: do you know anyone who would be interested enoughing you
- 47:07Speaker 1: to do that. Why no, your dancer's girl, aren't you?
- 47:11Speaker 7: I worked for it.
- 47:11Speaker 2: That's not what he is.
- 47:12Speaker 1: Well, did Dancer know that you were going away with Robert?
- 47:15Speaker 7: Why come on, come on, you told us before, you
- 47:17Speaker 7: said you'd keep that a secret. I'll never trust a
- 47:20Speaker 7: cop again.
- 47:21Speaker 1: You made a dicker with the police. Okay, Polly, but
- 47:23Speaker 1: that letter starts a lot on my lockey, Nick. No
- 47:26Speaker 1: one did come down that letter, and Landers wasn't killed
- 47:28Speaker 1: in her place. The only reason the murderer didn't kill
- 47:31Speaker 1: him that way was because he was found out. Pedro
- 47:34Speaker 1: came in yesterday to clean up Anderson's apartment and discover
- 47:37Speaker 1: the loose boards on the floor. He didn't like the
- 47:40Speaker 1: looks of things, so he put a new lock on
- 47:42Speaker 1: the door. When Anderson came in, he found he was
- 47:45Speaker 1: locked out. He heard Pedro telephoning me, and he killed him.
- 47:50Speaker 1: So what So who is Anderson?
- 47:53Speaker 2: Oh bight?
- 47:54Speaker 1: Who Polly Phill had a key to your apartment and
- 47:58Speaker 1: Dancer had one?
- 47:58Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 47:59Speaker 1: Who else? He's trying to hang this murder up on
- 48:01Speaker 1: us to protect his own family.
- 48:03Speaker 2: That's Helmer Dane.
- 48:04Speaker 1: She knocked her husband off. Everybody knows that I didn't,
- 48:06Speaker 1: and then you got your boyfriend David to throw away
- 48:08Speaker 1: the gun. That's a lie, ah, just the minute, pleads,
- 48:11Speaker 1: Look Dan, sir, let's come clean. You and Polly and
- 48:14Speaker 1: lum Key were out to shake Robert Landers down for
- 48:16Speaker 1: twenty five grand?
- 48:17Speaker 15: Right?
- 48:18Speaker 1: Oh sure? Then I suppose I knock him off and
- 48:20Speaker 1: stir up all this fuss before I get to Dole.
- 48:23Speaker 1: What kind of a stumble bumb does that make me
- 48:25Speaker 1: out to be?
- 48:26Speaker 15: You're a kind of a stumble bomb that left your
- 48:27Speaker 15: finger prints all over the room when you kill Phil.
- 48:29Speaker 1: Burn still Phil's dead? Yes, strangle, Well I didn't do it.
- 48:33Speaker 1: Why did you go to his place? Because I thought
- 48:34Speaker 1: he'd gummed up my game? I figured he'd try to
- 48:37Speaker 1: stick up Lands and had.
- 48:38Speaker 2: To kill him.
- 48:39Speaker 1: So I pushed him around a little to learn the manners.
- 48:42Speaker 1: And when I left him he had a split lip
- 48:43Speaker 1: and a couple of dents in him. But he was
- 48:45Speaker 1: just as much yourlive as you are, if that means anything. Polly,
- 48:51Speaker 1: who knew Fill was your husband? You were married? Weren't
- 48:54Speaker 1: you so filled with your husband?
- 48:56Speaker 2: As if you didn't not?
- 48:57Speaker 1: I never know her now, but I shy had Polly,
- 49:01Speaker 1: didn't you ever tell anyone that you were married, Polly. No,
- 49:03Speaker 1: would Phil have told?
- 49:05Speaker 7: No?
- 49:06Speaker 1: Did you and Phil talk about it?
- 49:07Speaker 7: Yeah, one night last week, but no one could have heard.
- 49:09Speaker 1: We were alone, down in my room alone. Don't forget
- 49:12Speaker 1: Anderson could hear everything that went on in your room,
- 49:15Speaker 1: Hew Tenant. When was Phil Burns killed?
- 49:18Speaker 7: Oh?
- 49:18Speaker 2: About two, near as we can figure, at.
- 49:21Speaker 1: Three point thirty. Anderson threw this note in at my window.
- 49:24Speaker 1: He was meaning to use some of the information he
- 49:26Speaker 1: gathered while he was up here. Dancer, how do he
- 49:29Speaker 1: felt a peaker? None of your business. This note is
- 49:32Speaker 1: a poor attempt at a literacy. The easy words is
- 49:35Speaker 1: felt wrong, and the tough one's right like to see it. Plumkey.
- 49:39Speaker 1: It was meant just to steer me down the Phil's
- 49:41Speaker 1: place to find his body and your fingerprints, Dancer. Someone's
- 49:45Speaker 1: framing you, Dancer. Yeah, you say you don't know this
- 49:49Speaker 1: Pedro Lumky. No, Well, I've got a picture of him
- 49:52Speaker 1: right here. This picture was taken about six years ago.
- 49:56Speaker 7: When Nick, what is it?
- 50:00Speaker 1: Nothing except except that all this time I've been waiting
- 50:05Speaker 1: for someone to make a slip, and someone has made it.
- 50:07Speaker 1: Who We've been wrong? This wasn't a killing for money.
- 50:13Speaker 1: It was a murder of hatred, revenge, folly. What did
- 50:19Speaker 1: Phil go to the fen for blackmail? Blackmail? David? When
- 50:26Speaker 1: were you supposed to give her up At the money
- 50:28Speaker 1: to go away this morning in cash? Yes? But when
- 50:32Speaker 1: he decided to go last night you had to give
- 50:34Speaker 1: him bonds.
- 50:35Speaker 14: Yes?
- 50:36Speaker 1: Where were you going to get cash on New Year's Day?
- 50:39Speaker 1: A bank holiday? It's funny I forgot about that. No,
- 50:44Speaker 1: you didn't, David. You never meant to give rob At
- 50:47Speaker 1: that money. You didn't want him to go away. You
- 50:50Speaker 1: wanted to kill him. You were going to get even
- 50:53Speaker 1: with him for taking Selim away from him. Nor is
- 50:55Speaker 1: he fooling? Sure? And you were fooling when you said
- 50:58Speaker 1: you hadn't seen Paidroar for six years. You said Pedro
- 51:01Speaker 1: had long white mustaches. Well he's got long white mustaches now,
- 51:06Speaker 1: But look at this picture there he is six years ago.
- 51:08Speaker 1: His mustache was neither white nor long. You didn't notice
- 51:12Speaker 1: him six years ago any more than I did. You
- 51:14Speaker 1: remember him as he was last night when you shot him,
- 51:18Speaker 1: You kill him, and then you killed Robert. Phil saw
- 51:22Speaker 1: you do it. He was going to blackmail you, so
- 51:24Speaker 1: you have to kill him too, And then you threw
- 51:27Speaker 1: that note in my window hope he could put me
- 51:28Speaker 1: off your trail.
- 51:30Speaker 11: David, don't let him say these terrible things.
- 51:32Speaker 7: Tell him it isn't true.
- 51:33Speaker 1: Ask him why he threw away your gun, Selma. He
- 51:35Speaker 1: knew it hadn't been fired. He knew you only had
- 51:37Speaker 1: to show it to pull your reticence get he threw
- 51:39Speaker 1: it away. Ask him why he.
- 51:40Speaker 11: Did that, David, why don't you speak?
- 51:43Speaker 1: Wasn't it because you hated her as much as Robert?
- 51:46Speaker 1: Wasn't because you wanted to get even with her too.
- 51:48Speaker 1: Wasn't it because you wanted to see her hang for
- 51:50Speaker 1: Robert's murder? David got the truth, not David. You don't
- 51:53Speaker 1: have to pretend anymore. That is the truth. I've hated you,
- 51:58Speaker 1: Selma and Robert ever since you threw me up before him.
- 52:01Speaker 15: I've been watching, waiting for the time when I could
- 52:03Speaker 15: get even with you for having ruled my life.
- 52:05Speaker 2: I did kill Robert, but not the way I wanted to.
- 52:08Speaker 2: It was too easy, too quick.
- 52:11Speaker 15: I wanted to see himself of the way he'd made
- 52:12Speaker 15: me suffer.
- 52:13Speaker 1: And you and you, I wanted to see you go
- 52:16Speaker 1: gradually madder and madder as the day came when you
- 52:19Speaker 1: were going to hang well, I'm not going to see
- 52:21Speaker 1: you hang well.
- 52:22Speaker 3: I'm still going to see you.
- 52:24Speaker 15: Diet that gun, don't you, folded boy?
- 52:26Speaker 2: I've got six pullots, one for her and one for myself,
- 52:29Speaker 2: and the rest for anyone.
- 52:30Speaker 1: Who tries to stop me.
- 52:31Speaker 3: Get my.
- 52:36Speaker 11: I did him?
- 52:37Speaker 2: Okay, Graham, I'll take that gun now.
- 52:39Speaker 1: Nice work, lumb key, Nice.
- 52:40Speaker 3: Work, Nick.
- 52:41Speaker 7: He saved you, and you sent his brother up.
- 52:44Speaker 1: Oh sure, mister Charles, send him up number one? Did you?
- 52:48Speaker 2: I'm not like my brother, I like his girls.
- 52:50Speaker 1: I'm your friend.
- 52:51Speaker 3: All you met you.
- 53:00Speaker 1: Tired darling? Not very where can you believe it? For alone?
- 53:05Speaker 1: No reporters, no friends, no surprises.
- 53:09Speaker 7: I suppose we really should decide where we're going.
- 53:11Speaker 1: Oh do you care?
- 53:14Speaker 7: No? But I haven't any clothes.
- 53:16Speaker 1: All the better you won't have to pack. All I
- 53:19Speaker 1: ain't need in the world is you and the toothbrush. Hey,
- 53:24Speaker 1: what's that you're doing?
- 53:25Speaker 7: I'm letting something.
- 53:27Speaker 1: I've gotten very far with it.
- 53:28Speaker 7: M Yes, I have there, it's done done.
- 53:33Speaker 1: Why? Hey, that looks like is that a baby sock?
- 53:38Speaker 7: M M? And you call yourself a detective?
- 53:43Speaker 1: Why missus, Charles? We draw the curtain on after the
- 54:10Speaker 1: thin men. In a moment, mister de Mill returns with
- 54:12Speaker 1: our stars. While we're waiting, let's talk about babies. You know,
- 54:17Speaker 1: families often speculate on the chances of the stork bringing
- 54:20Speaker 1: twins or triplets. Well, here are some figures that may
- 54:24Speaker 1: interest you. The chances of having twins is about one
- 54:29Speaker 1: in eighty four, of having triplets one in seven thousand,
- 54:34Speaker 1: five hundred. That makes triplets a pretty rare occurrence. Missus
- 54:38Speaker 1: Francis Bardall of Wolebrook, Massachusetts, was one of the mothers
- 54:42Speaker 1: who drew the lucky number in nineteen thirty nine, and
- 54:45Speaker 1: she's doubly lucky now because she has New Quick Lucks
- 54:48Speaker 1: to help her in caring for her three small babies.
- 54:51Speaker 1: She says, the triplets have.
- 54:53Speaker 7: Such sensitive skins.
- 54:54Speaker 10: I wouldn't dream of washing their clothes and harsh soaps
- 54:58Speaker 10: or rubbing them with cake soap. I just won't take
- 55:00Speaker 10: chances on having woolens or diapers getting rough and scratchy.
- 55:05Speaker 1: She's a wise mother, isn't she.
- 55:07Speaker 10: She goes on to say, New Quick Blucks is so
- 55:10Speaker 10: mild and gentle. It's the only thing I'd use for
- 55:12Speaker 10: the baby's clothes. It's so safe for everything safe in
- 55:16Speaker 10: water alone, I can depend on it never to make
- 55:19Speaker 10: woolens harsh and scratchy or fade the pretty colors of
- 55:23Speaker 10: little dresses and sun sets.
- 55:25Speaker 1: Yes, New Quicklucks is so wonderfully gentle and so easy
- 55:29Speaker 1: to use too, so fast in water, as cool as
- 55:33Speaker 1: your hand. It dissolves three times as fast as any
- 55:37Speaker 1: of ten other leading soaps tested. Ask for the generous
- 55:41Speaker 1: big box of New Quick Lucks tomorrow. It comes in
- 55:44Speaker 1: the same familiar package and costs you no more. Here's
- 55:48Speaker 1: mister de Mill with our stars. As Bill Powell and
- 55:52Speaker 1: Manili returned to the microphone. We offer our congratulations to
- 55:56Speaker 1: the thin Man on some first fast detective work. Suscil,
- 56:00Speaker 1: You're seldom wrong, but I'll have to mark that one
- 56:02Speaker 1: up against you. However, if it's any consolation, everybody makes
- 56:06Speaker 1: the same mistake.
- 56:07Speaker 7: Raise yourself for a sharp mister de Mill. Bill is
- 56:09Speaker 7: not and never was, the thin Man.
- 56:11Speaker 1: He isn't he never has been. Mercy Man, I can't
- 56:15Speaker 1: we even believe what we see in the movies. Just
- 56:17Speaker 1: for the record, the thin Man was murdered in the
- 56:19Speaker 1: first Thin Man picture. We haven't seen him.
- 56:22Speaker 7: Since, except in the title where he seems amazingly healthful?
- 56:25Speaker 1: What's there the name? Draw the picture by any name
- 56:28Speaker 1: you like, so long as you and Bill remain as
- 56:30Speaker 1: our favorite detectives. What's going to happen next to Norah
- 56:34Speaker 1: and Nick?
- 56:35Speaker 7: Well, there's another thin man picture plan that we haven't
- 56:38Speaker 7: started making it yet.
- 56:39Speaker 1: It's called the Shadow of the Thin Man, very promising
- 56:42Speaker 1: man hunt. I have entire confidence in both of you.
- 56:45Speaker 1: By the way, Cecil, didn't I hear you say that
- 56:47Speaker 1: you're going to do Showboat next week? You certainly did, Bill,
- 56:50Speaker 1: and we are.
- 56:51Speaker 7: Who's going to be on your cast, mister Demill.
- 56:53Speaker 1: We'll have Irene Dunn, Alan Jones and Charles Weninger in
- 57:00Speaker 1: the cast of the motion picture, and they all be
- 57:02Speaker 1: here on this stage to bring us the exciting drama
- 57:05Speaker 1: of Showboat and the great song Hits by Jerome Kern.
- 57:09Speaker 1: We embark at the usual time next Monday night for
- 57:11Speaker 1: this cruise of adventure and romance along the Mississippi, and
- 57:15Speaker 1: we hope you'll all be on board. Show Boat is
- 57:17Speaker 1: practically a command to listen. Good night, sustle, good.
- 57:21Speaker 7: Night, good night, good night.
- 57:26Speaker 1: We'll call you to on another case from our sponsor,
- 57:36Speaker 1: the makers of Lucks takes rin me and inviting you
- 57:39Speaker 1: to be with us again next Monday Night, when the
- 57:41Speaker 1: Lux Radio Theater presents Irene Dunn, Alan Jones and Charles
- 57:46Speaker 1: Wynninger in Showboat, the Successful by De Mel saying good
- 57:51Speaker 1: night to you from Alio. Heard in tonight's play were
- 58:07Speaker 1: Julie Bannon as Selma, Fred Mackay as David, Edward Marr
- 58:11Speaker 1: as Abrams, Mary lou Simpson as Polly Warren Ash as Dancer,
- 58:16Speaker 1: Wally Mayer as lum Key, and Arthur K Bryan Abrennel's
- 58:20Speaker 1: Walter white In as Sea Berry, Tristraan Coffin, Eric Snowden,
- 58:24Speaker 1: Russell Fillmore, Loo Merrill, and Fred Shields. The American Red
- 58:28Speaker 1: Cross needs millions of dollars for European war relief work.
- 58:32Speaker 1: They're asking for your contribution now, anything you can give,
- 58:36Speaker 1: the place to give your local Red Cross chapter the
- 58:40Speaker 1: time as soon as you possibly can. William Powell and
- 58:45Speaker 1: Myrna Loy appeared to Night through the courtesy of Metro
- 58:47Speaker 1: Golden Mayor. They will soon be seen together on the
- 58:50Speaker 1: screen in If I I Love You Again. Our music
- 58:55Speaker 1: was directed by Lois Silvers and Your Announcer has been
- 58:58Speaker 1: Melville Rwick. This is the Columbia podcasting system.
