Transcript
- 0:10Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks, and all the nerds in between.
- 0:12My name is Megan and today I have a character breakdown for
- 0:14you. For a character that we all
- 0:16know, we all may love or hate. I don't know.
- 0:20I freaking love a villain. So.
- 0:23So I'm going to tell you all about this character.
- 0:26The character is actually Wilson Fisk, which you probably already
- 0:28know because you clicked the video.
- 0:30So Wilson Fisk, he first showed up an Amazing Spider man #50 in
- 0:35April of 1967. He was created by Stan Lee and
- 0:38John Romita. So he has been around that long.
- 0:43Wilson Fisk didn't exactly get off to a great start in his
- 0:46life. He grew up in a really
- 0:48dysfunctional home where his parents were always fighting and
- 0:51things just didn't get easier at school because he was being
- 0:53bullied a lot for his being overweight.
- 0:56By that time, he was just 12, he'd already committed his first
- 0:59unaliving, so he started off pretty early.
- 1:04From early on, Fist was obsessed with being the best at whatever
- 1:07he did. He believed raw strength was the
- 1:10key to power in the criminal world, so he pushed himself
- 1:13hard, training in bodybuilding and different fighting styles,
- 1:16eventually focusing on sumo. That interest also sparked A
- 1:21broader fascination with Asian culture.
- 1:24At the same time, he knew brains mattered just as much as muscle.
- 1:28Since he came from a poor background and didn't get much
- 1:31formal education, he basically taught himself, grabbing books
- 1:34however he could, even stealing them sometimes.
- 1:37He studied a lot, but political science really clicked for him.
- 1:41He figured out that organized criminals, like a political
- 1:45machine, would give him an edge. By 15, he was already running a
- 1:50growing gang so efficiently that people started calling him the
- 1:52kingpin of crime. He eventually started working as
- 1:56muscle for the Maggie Abbas Don Rigoletto around the time he
- 2:00became close with Miles Morales. Not that Miles Morales, a
- 2:03completely different Miles Morales, which is all right, who
- 2:07once saved his life in prison. Fisk never forgot that and felt
- 2:11like he owed him forever. With Morales by his side, Fisk
- 2:14made his move, took over Rigoletto's operation and had
- 2:18him taken out. Later.
- 2:21Morales left the life behind and Fisk made sure to wipe any trace
- 2:24of his criminal past. Meanwhile, people kept calling
- 2:28Fisk Kingpin, at first mockingly, but it stuck.
- 2:31Obviously, Fisk was smart about money too.
- 2:34He funneled his illegal earnings into legit businesses, starting
- 2:38with a spice import company. Even after building a massive
- 2:42empire, he liked to publicly play it off as if he was just a
- 2:46humble spice dealer. Over time, he became a big name
- 2:50in New York society, and that's when he met Vanessa.
- 2:53He fell hard, married her, and for once found some kind of
- 2:57peace. They had a son, Richard, soon
- 2:59after. Years later, Fisk had become one
- 3:02of the most powerful crime bosses around.
- 3:04When Spider Man briefly retired, Fisk saw his chance.
- 3:08He brought together a bunch of criminal groups under his
- 3:11leadership and kicked off a massive crime wave in New York.
- 3:15But things fell apart when Spider Man came back and exposed
- 3:18him publicly, thanks to a failed attempt to silence newspaper
- 3:21publisher J Jonah Jameson. From there, Fisk's life was a
- 3:26constant cycle of power moves and setbacks.
- 3:29He clashed repeatedly with heroes like Daredevil, dealt
- 3:32with betrayals, including from his own son, and even got
- 3:35tangled up with groups like Hydra, though he backed out when
- 3:39he realized he wasn't really in control.
- 3:42At one point, Vanessa could not take his criminal life anymore
- 3:45and forced him to quit or lose her.
- 3:48He chose her and they left for Japan, but when she was
- 3:51kidnapped and seemingly killed by his own organization, Fisk
- 3:55snapped and came roaring back, more ruthless than ever.
- 3:59He even turned in other criminals just to eliminate
- 4:02competition and rebuild his empire even stronger.
- 4:06Over the years, Fisk kept trying to balance crime, businesses,
- 4:09and even politics. He manipulated elections, ran
- 4:13parts of cities, and constantly battled Daredevil, who lived in
- 4:17his head rent free from the get go, even going as far as ruining
- 4:23Matt Murdock's life when he discovered his secret identity.
- 4:25Still, Daredevil always managed to push back.
- 4:29Fisk lost everything more than once.
- 4:32His empire, his family, even his sanity at times.
- 4:35He was betrayed, nearly killed, and forced to rebuild from
- 4:38scratch. Over and over.
- 4:40He tried expanding into new cities, made alliances with
- 4:44assassins and super villains, and even faked his own death at
- 4:47one point. Eventually, he clawed his way
- 4:49back to power again, this time as the mayor of New York.
- 4:54He used that position to go after vigilantes like Spider Man
- 4:57and Daredevil, twisting the system to serve his own goals,
- 5:01which is what we see happening in Daredevil Born Again.
- 5:04And it's like, if you haven't read Devil's Reign in the
- 5:08comics, that is my favorite event of all time, and you
- 5:10absolutely should. But even then, things didn't
- 5:14stay stable. He got out maneuvered, exposed,
- 5:17and beaten again. In the end, after everything,
- 5:21wars, betrayals, deaths, comebacks, Fisk actually tried
- 5:25stepping away from the crime. After being possessed and later
- 5:29freed from a demonic force named Greed, he showed signs of regret
- 5:34and started dismantling parts of his empire.
- 5:37Whether that change sticks, it's always up in the air with
- 5:40someone like Kingpin. Now Vanessa and Kingpin are no.
- 5:43Longer together. And she's not even alive.
- 5:46But that brings us to our his new and current wife, Typhoid
- 5:50Mary. Mary is a character with many,
- 5:52many layers to her in the most literal term.
- 5:54But this episode isn't about her, even though we're going to
- 5:56talk quite a bit about her. If you want to learn more about
- 5:59her, check out my channel because I.
- 6:01Have a breakdown of her as well. But Mary started off as working
- 6:05security for Kingpin and he. Treated her terribly.
- 6:09So many times. But Mary isn't your average
- 6:12girl. To put it plainly, she is
- 6:14bananas. Not because of her mental
- 6:16illness, but because. Of who she is.
- 6:19So she married Kingpin and actually became the First Lady
- 6:22of New York when Kingpin was mayor.
- 6:24Of course, Kingpin's reign as mayor didn't last, and the two
- 6:28left town when things got. Real bad.
- 6:31Where did they go, you ask? Well, none other than.
- 6:33Krakoa, actually. You see, Mary is actually a
- 6:37mutant and she has Krakoa in citizenship and by marriage.
- 6:40Kingpin also has a citizenship. She was.
- 6:43Able to extend it to. Him.
- 6:45They arrived in Krakoa. At the exact worst time.
- 6:47Because it was in time for the. Hellfire Gala.
- 6:49Which, as some of you may know, was an absolute disaster.
- 6:54It resulted in many deaths, much destruction.
- 6:58It resulted in Mary being separated for Fisk for a time.
- 7:01But they. Got back.
- 7:01Together and she worked as Kingpin's bodyguard and his wife
- 7:05during New York supervillain gang war.
- 7:08So Kingpin comes with so many layers as a character.
- 7:12We've seen so many different stories and events and things
- 7:14with him, and I think he's being brought to life perfectly by
- 7:18Vincent D'onfrio and Daredevil Born Again.
- 7:21So that's all I have to say on Kingpin.
- 7:25That is my breakdown of Kingpin. I hope you enjoyed it.
- 7:27I hope you'll like and subscribe, and I hope you have a
- 7:31marvelous day.
