- 3:36Speaker 7: Oh morning Joe, Hi, do you want to see me? Yeah?
- 3:38Speaker 7: Good money, it's good.
- 3:42Speaker 6: N Yeah.
- 3:46Speaker 10: Got some bad news, Joe, real bad for what's a mina?
- 3:50Speaker 10: I know how much it means. I wish I didn't
- 3:51Speaker 10: have to be the one.
- 3:52Speaker 7: To tell you.
- 3:53Speaker 5: But tell me what.
- 3:54Speaker 7: Sorry, Joe, it's about the Ben. Something's happening Ben.
- 3:58Speaker 5: Well, what do you mean?
- 3:59Speaker 10: We were going to find him out it early this morning.
- 4:00Speaker 10: I thought about calling him.
- 4:02Speaker 7: Figure it'd be better if I told you in person.
- 4:04Speaker 5: But what's the matter of Ben?
- 4:05Speaker 8: Sir?
- 4:06Speaker 7: He's dead Joe been dead early this morning?
- 4:10Speaker 5: What?

- 4:17Speaker 10: No got out of bed, started dressing and go to work.
- 4:21Speaker 10: Went downstairs to put a pot of coffee on make
- 4:23Speaker 10: some toast. Wife heard him fall. She went downstairs and
- 4:26Speaker 10: found him already dead.
- 4:28Speaker 7: Went fast.
- 4:31Speaker 5: Ook. I don't get this.
- 4:32Speaker 7: It couldn't be sorry, Joe means a lot to all
- 4:35Speaker 7: of us.
- 4:37Speaker 5: Yeah, well I still don't yet it. Ben didn't have
- 4:39Speaker 5: any trouble with his heart. He never mentioned anything about it.
- 4:41Speaker 10: Yeah, maybe that was the trouble? Was his heart all right?
- 4:44Speaker 10: When his wife found him. She called the doctor in
- 4:46Speaker 10: the fire department rescue squad. They worked over him for
- 4:49Speaker 10: an hour, no years, and his wife called me not
- 4:52Speaker 10: to tear your heart out.
- 4:55Speaker 5: Yeah, I can't believe it what you say.
- 5:00Speaker 10: Actually didn't break up, too shocked to realize that, I guess,
- 5:03Speaker 10: sounded apologetic that I'm sorry, captain, this is missus Romero.
- 5:07Speaker 10: Ben died this morning. I thought you ought to know
- 5:09Speaker 10: Ben's dead.
- 5:11Speaker 5: That's terrible. It's a lousy shame.
- 5:15Speaker 10: Kept saying the same thing over again, I'm sorry, Ben's dead.
- 5:18Speaker 10: I thought you ought to know Ben's dead. Yeah, Joe
- 5:21Speaker 10: White had and I went out there right away, tried
- 5:23Speaker 10: to talk to her. It wasn't much.
- 5:24Speaker 5: You excuse me, I'm sorry.
- 5:31Speaker 7: Yeah, you were with him a long time.
- 5:34Speaker 11: Yeah, eleven years day I came on the job. They
- 5:39Speaker 11: assigned me as his partner. You know, this is a
- 5:43Speaker 11: tough one. It's hard to believe. It's tougher on his wife.
- 5:49Speaker 11: That's all right with you. I'd like to go see her,
- 5:51Speaker 11: all right. I wish I could give you the day off, Joe.
- 5:53Speaker 11: I know what it means to you. You just get
- 5:55Speaker 11: convict thing. I just can't spare you. Yeah, that's all right,
- 5:57Speaker 11: I just soon worked.
- 6:00Speaker 12: I figured out to talk to Amy though, might help
- 6:03Speaker 12: to take the edge off as the four video.
- 6:04Speaker 10: Sure man, Joe, Yeah, I know what it is. I've
- 6:15Speaker 10: been on the job nineteen years, lost two partners, good cops.
- 6:20Speaker 10: One of them was killed in the line of duty.
- 6:21Speaker 10: The other one worked at his job until he dropped.
- 6:23Speaker 10: It's the same thing, Joe. In my book, they both
- 6:26Speaker 10: rate medals.
- 6:30Speaker 2: I left the office and went down on the elevator alone.
- 6:33Speaker 2: I got in the car, and I started over for
- 6:35Speaker 2: Ben's place. I thought about what I was going to
- 6:39Speaker 2: say to his wife.
- 6:41Speaker 5: I thought about his little boy. I thought about Ben.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Eleven years I'd been working as a cop, and all
- 6:49Speaker 2: of a sudden, it wasn't the same anymore. I thought
- 6:53Speaker 2: about the first day I met Ben I was a rookie.
- 6:57Speaker 2: I remembered what he taught me about being a cop.
- 7:00Speaker 5: I thought about how much I owed him.
- 7:03Speaker 2: I thought about the thousands of cops just like him
- 7:05Speaker 2: all over the country, the ones that came before us,
- 7:09Speaker 2: the ones that'll take our place.
- 7:12Speaker 5: I thought about their.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Lives, and their homes and their families, what they meant,
- 7:16Speaker 2: what their jobs meant.
- 7:19Speaker 5: I thought about Ben eleven years.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Stakouts, the early morning watch, interrogations, office duty. You could
- 7:29Speaker 2: cover it in volumes, or you could write on the
- 7:30Speaker 2: back of an envelope. He was a good cop and
- 7:33Speaker 2: he was a good friend. There wasn't much else to say.
- 7:38Speaker 2: It was a big loss.
- 7:40Speaker 5: I stayed at Ben's house for about an hour talking
- 7:42Speaker 5: to his wife.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Joe Whitehead from the medical detail was there. All things considered,
- 7:48Speaker 2: she seemed to be taking it fairly well. I told
- 7:51Speaker 2: her I'd drop around later in the day, and then
- 7:53Speaker 2: I checked back in at the office for work. Temporarily,
- 7:57Speaker 2: Sergeant Ed Jacobs was assigned to work with me. The
- 8:00Speaker 2: big problem at the moment was a pair of escaped convicts.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Jacobs and I drove out to run down on a
- 8:05Speaker 2: possible lead eleven o five am. We got to the
- 8:08Speaker 2: address listed the Cathedral of Saint Augustine.
- 8:11Speaker 5: We checked in at the rectory and then we went
- 8:13Speaker 5: around to the church.
- 8:20Speaker 13: Go ahead, Okay, I'm sure a beautiful church, isn't it.
- 8:34Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a nice choir, isn't it.
- 8:37Speaker 8: What if they're holding services?
- 8:38Speaker 5: No, whole choir is probably just practice. You'll see the
- 8:42Speaker 5: priest on anywhere. Ed.
- 8:43Speaker 14: Well, yeah, someone over by the side all today looks
- 8:47Speaker 14: like the padre.
- 8:48Speaker 12: Yeah, easter Hamles sure pretty hard the yeah, sure, it
- 8:57Speaker 12: really takes me back.
- 8:59Speaker 8: You never believe it to what's that?
- 9:01Speaker 5: He used to be a boy?
- 9:02Speaker 8: Tendor?
- 9:02Speaker 5: Or excuse me?
- 9:05Speaker 8: Please?
- 9:06Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 9:07Speaker 5: Are you father? Newman's right?
- 9:09Speaker 9: Can I help him?
- 9:10Speaker 2: Police officer's father? I see, this is my partner, Sergeant Jacob's.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Mine name was Friday.
- 9:17Speaker 14: I'll foll housekeeper over directly told us we could find
- 9:20Speaker 14: you here. I'd like to talk to you for a
- 9:22Speaker 14: few minutes if you got the time.
- 9:23Speaker 10: Father, Let's see, I have confessions starting at three o'clock.
- 9:28Speaker 10: Leave me about ten minutes. What was it about Sagan?
- 9:32Speaker 5: Well, we're inquiring about a Stanley Blair. Father. We understand
- 9:34Speaker 5: that you knew him fairly well, oh.
- 9:36Speaker 10: Yes, if I knew. Matter of fact, I read about
- 9:38Speaker 10: him in the paper this morning. Trouble he's in. Is
- 9:41Speaker 10: that what you wanted to talk about?
- 9:43Speaker 14: Yes, that's right. We're making a check of all his
- 9:45Speaker 14: known friends as relatives.
- 9:47Speaker 10: Very unfortunate, isn't it. Did the newspapers have the story correct?
- 9:51Speaker 8: Yes, I'm afraid so. Yeah.
- 9:53Speaker 14: I wonder if we could step outside of father, we
- 9:55Speaker 14: could talk out there without disturbing anyone in church.
- 9:58Speaker 5: Truly sorry, please kill.
- 10:02Speaker 10: Certainly a tragedy, I mean happening at Easter time. I'll
- 10:07Speaker 10: remember the boy in my mask tomorrow. Lord knows he can.
- 10:10Speaker 5: Use some prayers, yes, sir, I guess he can.
- 10:20Speaker 9: Here we are bench there could carried us down, sir.
- 10:23Speaker 5: That's all right.
- 10:24Speaker 10: The newspapers weren't too specific. How did he manage to
- 10:28Speaker 10: escape the way he did? I always thought state penitentiaries
- 10:31Speaker 10: were well guarded.
- 10:32Speaker 14: Apparently Blair was one of the trusted prisoners. It's a
- 10:34Speaker 14: minimum security prisoner to begin with, Father.
- 10:36Speaker 10: I see, I suppose Blair and the man he escaped
- 10:39Speaker 10: with thought about it. A good deal, according to the paper,
- 10:42Speaker 10: and as well planned. When did they get away last night?
- 10:45Speaker 14: It was this morning, prison official figure about two am
- 10:49Speaker 14: slugged the guard and went over the wall.
- 10:51Speaker 8: Some other.
- 10:51Speaker 14: Two of them got hold of a gun, held up
- 10:53Speaker 14: a motorist on the highway store his car. As last
- 10:55Speaker 14: reportment hand terrible?
- 10:57Speaker 9: Did the police considered them dangerous?
- 11:00Speaker 5: Their arm? Father?
- 11:01Speaker 2: Both of them were doing time for robbery. They both
- 11:03Speaker 2: used guns before. How about possible contacts he might have outthound?
- 11:06Speaker 5: Father? Can you help us there at all?
- 11:08Speaker 10: I'm I prayed, not, Sergeant. I think stan knew some
- 11:11Speaker 10: people in San Francisco. I don't know their names or addresses, though,
- 11:15Speaker 10: I haven't any idea, And.
- 11:17Speaker 2: There's no special person or place that you know of
- 11:19Speaker 2: that he'd be likely to go if he heads back
- 11:21Speaker 2: for Los Angeles.
- 11:22Speaker 10: No, no, I can think of. You imagine he'd be
- 11:25Speaker 10: likely to come back here.
- 11:27Speaker 8: We're not sure.
- 11:28Speaker 14: Last report we had seemed to indicate Blairin's partner. We're
- 11:30Speaker 14: heading this way. Prison's only about forty miles away. Could
- 11:33Speaker 14: be there in the city.
- 11:34Speaker 9: Now, I don't understand.
- 11:36Speaker 10: I mean, with all the police looking for them, why
- 11:39Speaker 10: would they come back here.
- 11:40Speaker 2: They probably figured they can find cover a lot easier
- 11:42Speaker 2: than they could in some of the small towns.
- 11:44Speaker 10: H Sergeant, Yeah, father, do you think they'll have trouble
- 11:48Speaker 10: taking stand?
- 11:49Speaker 9: I mean, can they take him alive?
- 11:52Speaker 2: Well, we'll try our best to make it that way.
- 11:54Speaker 2: It's like I told you, father, he's got a gun.
- 11:56Speaker 2: If he's cornered, there's a good chance he might try
- 11:57Speaker 2: to shoot his way out.
- 12:00Speaker 10: Discouraging sometimes I try to help them. I pray for them,
- 12:03Speaker 10: young thieves. I only hope they're all as lucky as
- 12:07Speaker 10: as he was.
- 12:08Speaker 8: How's that it?
- 12:09Speaker 7: The grotto back there in the garden figure of a
- 12:11Speaker 7: man in it.
- 12:13Speaker 8: Oh?
- 12:13Speaker 10: Yeah, the statue of Disma's one of the luckiest men
- 12:16Speaker 10: who ever lived. I like to tell fellows like Stan
- 12:19Speaker 10: about him.
- 12:20Speaker 5: I don't think I understand. Father.
- 12:21Speaker 10: You know the story of the crucifixion. The two men
- 12:23Speaker 10: who were crucified with Christ.
- 12:25Speaker 8: They were both thieves.
- 12:27Speaker 10: A few minutes before he died, one of the thieves
- 12:29Speaker 10: turned to Christ on the cross, confessed his crimes, asked
- 12:33Speaker 10: our Lord to remember him. Christ told him this day
- 12:36Speaker 10: he'll be with me in Paradise. The man's name was Disma.
- 12:40Speaker 10: We like to call him the good Thief. I told
- 12:43Speaker 10: Stan about it right here in his courtyard. He should
- 12:46Speaker 10: have remembered it. Yeah, I guess so. I told him,
- 12:48Speaker 10: you never give up hope. He can make the grade
- 12:50Speaker 10: in the last five minutes of your life. Stand out
- 12:53Speaker 10: of no better or to remember, sir, the good Thief.
- 12:56Speaker 10: He made it with a prayer, not to the gun
- 12:58Speaker 10: in his hand.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Before we left, Father Newman, we gave him our card,
- 13:07Speaker 2: and he gave us a list of eight names and
- 13:09Speaker 2: addresses people in the neighborhood who'd known the escaped convict
- 13:12Speaker 2: Stanley Blair before he was sentenced to the State penitentiary
- 13:15Speaker 2: to serve time on his robbery conviction. Three point fifteen
- 13:18Speaker 2: pm we met with Sergeants Max Herman and J. E.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Crowley from robbery Detail. We divided the list of names
- 13:25Speaker 2: in half and we began checking him out. Ed and
- 13:28Speaker 2: I didn't have much luck on our and most of
- 13:30Speaker 2: the people we talked to told us that they knew
- 13:32Speaker 2: Stanley Blair, but none of them had seen heard from
- 13:35Speaker 2: him or knew anything about his activities or his family
- 13:37Speaker 2: since Blair had gone to prison two and a half
- 13:39Speaker 2: years before. Steakhouts were set up at two of the
- 13:42Speaker 2: hottest places. Five twenty pm. ED and I went back
- 13:46Speaker 2: to the office. Crowley was waiting for us.
- 13:49Speaker 15: No no luck on our Indeed, the same thing I
- 13:51Speaker 15: say heard Edvan was when he was set up.
- 13:53Speaker 8: Just finishers at any lately, pats.
- 13:54Speaker 6: It all yees teletype from the Sheriff's office.
- 13:57Speaker 15: It was waiting here When Max and I got back,
- 13:59Speaker 15: I guess Sir Hunt was right.
- 14:00Speaker 6: Looks like they headed this way.
- 14:02Speaker 5: Well, how do you mean somebody spot them?
- 14:03Speaker 15: This is side of West COVENA hell up a grocery
- 14:05Speaker 15: store slugged. The owner got twenty three dollars and forty cents.
- 14:08Speaker 15: Not going to take them far.
- 14:09Speaker 5: Descriptions match out, yeah, perfectly.
- 14:12Speaker 15: Suspects believed to be two prisoners who escaped this day
- 14:14Speaker 15: from the California Institution from Manchino, Stanley AR Blair, Wesley A.
- 14:18Speaker 6: Russell something else.
- 14:20Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 14:21Speaker 6: At grocery store they knocked over.

- 14:29Speaker 9: Out on it.
- 14:30Speaker 15: How about a car they switch over? Y, Yeah, we
- 14:32Speaker 15: don't know about it. Apparently they're still using the Buick coop.
- 14:34Speaker 15: They took them at motors this morning. No reports on it,
- 14:36Speaker 15: though it's.
- 14:37Speaker 5: A queer one. You think somebody'd spot it.
- 14:39Speaker 15: They got the highway patrol working, this highway patrol, Sheriff's office,
- 14:42Speaker 15: our department, everybody you can name.
- 14:44Speaker 6: By the way, you had R and I Puller mug jest.

- 14:55Speaker 14: them through here.
- 14:56Speaker 2: How about that other list of their friends and relatives
- 14:58Speaker 2: we pulled from their packages. The michaeleb were checking them out,
- 15:01Speaker 2: weren't They.
- 15:01Speaker 6: Probably still are.
- 15:02Speaker 7: No word from him yet.
- 15:04Speaker 6: How do you size it to them, Joe Blair and Russell.
- 15:06Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 15:06Speaker 2: It's a tough combination. Russell's older, He's got the experience.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Blair is younger, he's got the nerve. Anyway, you figure
- 15:12Speaker 2: it's not going.
- 15:13Speaker 6: To be easy.

- 16:49Speaker 5: According to the broadcast, they were last seen heading north.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Through the valley in the Buick Coup the original escape car.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Seven thirty eight pm Ed Jacobs and I got a
- 16:59Speaker 2: call to return to our station. We went back to
- 17:01Speaker 2: the city hall.
- 17:03Speaker 8: Got a hunch show. It's going to be a long
- 17:05Speaker 8: night and it's a rough one.
- 17:06Speaker 5: Guns and ammunition. They want to make a stand. They're
- 17:09Speaker 5: all ready for it.
- 17:10Speaker 14: Can't see how they can go too fu at hot
- 17:12Speaker 14: car or roadblocks set up. Somebody's bond to stopping what
- 17:14Speaker 14: we're doing. All right, So go ahead, you know, Friday Jacobs, Yeah,
- 17:19Speaker 14: Cappan you want to send here.
- 17:21Speaker 8: Not for long. Keep your coats on.
- 17:22Speaker 6: The rest of the men have already left.
- 17:23Speaker 5: What's the latest.
- 17:24Speaker 10: Yes, communication from the Ventura Sheriff's office. Blur and Russell
- 17:28Speaker 10: were spotted just across the county line. Sheriff figures they
- 17:30Speaker 10: got them boxed in. How close a lot of territory?
- 17:33Speaker 10: Twenty square mile circle? You say they got Blurr and
- 17:35Speaker 10: Russell tied down inside and they're on foot. We're sending
- 17:38Speaker 10: up men to help out her.
- 17:39Speaker 8: Two of them. Twenty square mile's gonna take a lot
- 17:41Speaker 8: of men.
- 17:42Speaker 10: If we need more, we'll get them. It's no easy touch.
- 17:44Speaker 10: They're desperate. You heard the latest? O. What's that last
- 17:47Speaker 10: place they hit in the valley? They serve Notice they're
- 17:49Speaker 10: not going to be taken alive, either one of them.
- 17:50Speaker 5: That's good sales talk. What do they got to back
- 17:52Speaker 5: it up?
- 17:52Speaker 10: Three guns and a load of ammunition. If we want
- 17:55Speaker 10: to take them alive, they swear it'll cost us ten men.
- 17:57Speaker 10: They'll kill five cops apiece.
- 17:59Speaker 16: You any ideas, Yeah, let's make liars out of them.
- 18:12Speaker 4: You are listening to dragnet authentic stories of your police
- 18:15Speaker 4: force and action.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Saturday, April twenty fourth, nine pm, along with Captain Dideon
- 18:27Speaker 2: and a dozen other men from Robbery Detail, Ed Jacobs
- 18:29Speaker 2: and I left the office and headed north up through
- 18:31Speaker 2: the San Fernando Valley.
- 18:33Speaker 5: The area where the two escape.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Convicts were reportedly surrounded was just on the outskirts of
- 18:37Speaker 2: Ventura County Line. On the way out, we stopped for
- 18:40Speaker 2: a minute and iPhone Ben's house. His wife had been
- 18:43Speaker 2: given a sedative and she was resting. Her folks were
- 18:46Speaker 2: with it. Ten fifteen pm we arrived at the meeting
- 18:50Speaker 2: point on the edge of the blockaded area from which
- 18:52Speaker 2: the search was being directed. Communication facilities had been set
- 18:55Speaker 2: up along with a field kitchen to feed the men
- 18:58Speaker 2: taking part in the hunt, over five hundred of them,
- 19:01Speaker 2: from our office, the La Sheriff's Department, the State Highway Patrol,
- 19:05Speaker 2: the Ventura Sheriff's Department, and a couple of dozen private
- 19:08Speaker 2: citizens who lived in the area. Together with Max Herman
- 19:11Speaker 2: and Crowley, Ed Jacobs and I took up our position
- 19:14Speaker 2: in the line of men that stretched north and east,
- 19:17Speaker 2: then north again, circling the entire area, twenty square miles
- 19:21Speaker 2: of it. The line drew slowly inward twelve midnight, one am.
- 19:27Speaker 5: No sign of the suspects. We stayed at it.
- 19:32Speaker 14: You get no idea the size of these hayfields till
- 19:35Speaker 14: you start hiking them.
- 19:36Speaker 8: Yeh.
- 19:38Speaker 5: Throw the light over there? What you add irrigation ditch
- 19:40Speaker 5: there right there at it? Yeah, it's okay.
- 19:47Speaker 2: It's a long hike. I would you like to see
- 19:50Speaker 2: some of that hot coffee pretty soon?
- 19:52Speaker 8: Yeah? Same here? Nice setup they got.
- 19:55Speaker 2: I had a field kitchen, yeah, joy, Yeah, Hey.
- 20:00Speaker 12: You got the light.
- 20:03Speaker 17: Yeah we got it.
- 20:04Speaker 7: I want to stand up with flare worth.
- 20:07Speaker 2: A clump of tree over this light It up good, okay, Crawley.
- 20:16Speaker 8: About a forty five degree angle. Joe had ought to
- 20:18Speaker 8: do it.
- 20:18Speaker 14: Huh yeah, okay, had ought to do it.
- 20:25Speaker 8: Really lights it up, doesn't it.
- 20:27Speaker 5: You got any extra magnesium shells?
- 20:29Speaker 4: Are right?
- 20:29Speaker 8: Yeah? One fight here? Here you are?
- 20:35Speaker 5: Thanks?
- 20:38Speaker 6: There we go Friday at you?
- 20:41Speaker 5: Yeah, cap over here?
- 20:42Speaker 9: I know he was beating the brush here anymore.
- 20:44Speaker 7: We're moving up three miles north.
- 20:46Speaker 10: How come Blarin Russell? They hit again, kidnapped an old
- 20:48Speaker 10: couple from a farmhouse.
- 20:49Speaker 5: They're still on foot.
- 20:50Speaker 10: Yeah, as far as we know, they're hemmed in a
- 20:52Speaker 10: two square mile area. They may try to break out,
- 20:54Speaker 10: use the old couple for a shield, but where's that
- 20:56Speaker 10: leave us?
- 20:56Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 20:57Speaker 5: You think they'd harm the old couple.
- 20:58Speaker 6: They kidnapped him their desk?
- 21:00Speaker 5: You figure it, am.
- 21:06Speaker 2: All of the men in the search party were shifted
- 21:07Speaker 2: north to the area where the two escaped convicts and
- 21:10Speaker 2: their kidnap victims were last seen. Two officers were sent
- 21:13Speaker 2: to each farmhouse in the immediate neighborhood to make sure
- 21:16Speaker 2: that the suspects and their victims were not hit out
- 21:18Speaker 2: or that they were.
- 21:19Speaker 5: Being held as hostages.
- 21:21Speaker 2: The officers were ordered to remain at the homes in
- 21:23Speaker 2: the event that Blair and Russell might try to find
- 21:25Speaker 2: cover the searching party moved in slowly over the affected area.
- 21:30Speaker 2: We knew for certain the suspects were still somewhere inside.
- 21:34Speaker 5: Two point fifteen am, still no sign of them.
- 21:37Speaker 2: The lines drew in closer two thirty am.
- 21:43Speaker 8: Can't be much longer, that's sure.
- 21:45Speaker 5: Yeah, well, I can't understand it. We should have jumped
- 21:47Speaker 5: them by now.
- 21:48Speaker 14: It's only a few hundred feet to ago. As the
- 21:49Speaker 14: other line closing in toward us wander, they could have
- 21:52Speaker 14: slipped through beach me ed. Who's that coming?
- 21:55Speaker 5: Can you see?
- 21:56Speaker 8: Yeah? It looked like Crowley. Yeah, Joe, Yeah, over here?
- 22:02Speaker 5: You got any word?
- 22:03Speaker 15: They found the old couple tied up in an irrigation
- 22:05Speaker 15: to a chaf a mile south of here. Say all right,
- 22:07Speaker 15: yeah they're okay, old ladies for a bad headlong she
- 22:10Speaker 15: got slugged.
- 22:11Speaker 6: She and her husband have been taking the hospital.
- 22:13Speaker 8: How about blurring Russell?
- 22:14Speaker 6: No word?
- 22:15Speaker 15: She's heard the captain ask for the car with a
- 22:17Speaker 15: loud speaker. He's over there now with sheriff early and
- 22:19Speaker 15: they couldn't have gotten through the lines. They gotta be
- 22:21Speaker 15: around here somewhere.
- 22:22Speaker 8: Doesn't figure. We combed every foot of this neighborhood.
- 22:24Speaker 18: Attention all officers. Attention all officers, this is Captain Didion.
- 22:32Speaker 18: Returned to your posts immediately. The search has been canceled.
- 22:38Speaker 18: The search has been canceled.
- 22:41Speaker 8: How about that?
- 22:42Speaker 5: I don't know. Come on, let's find out.
- 22:46Speaker 8: Area is just getting out of the car.
- 22:48Speaker 5: Capt'n Yeah, what's the matter are we're giving it up?
- 22:52Speaker 8: No?
- 22:52Speaker 10: Maybe we've been going at it backwards. We've been trying
- 22:54Speaker 10: all night to jump in. Got a new idea, Yeah,
- 22:57Speaker 10: maybe we can make them jump us.
- 23:01Speaker 2: Two forty eight am, Captain Dideon and Sheriff Durley ordered
- 23:05Speaker 2: the men to return to the Sheriff's office, with the
- 23:08Speaker 2: exception of two deputy sheriffs, Captain Dideon, Sheriff Durley and
- 23:11Speaker 2: Ed Jacobs, and myself. The rest of the searching party
- 23:14Speaker 2: vacated the area. The plan was to give the general
- 23:17Speaker 2: impression that the search had been called off in the
- 23:19Speaker 2: hope that it might bring the suspects out in the open.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Because of the darkness and the early morning fog settling
- 23:26Speaker 2: over the terrain, we knew that the odds were all
- 23:28Speaker 2: against us. Captain Didion and Sheriff Durley decided instead to
- 23:33Speaker 2: try and lure Blair on Russell from wherever they were
- 23:35Speaker 2: hiding out Each of the small farmhouses in the immediate neighborhood,
- 23:39Speaker 2: eight of them in all, were already under surveillance. Each
- 23:43Speaker 2: of the occupants were requested to park their cars in
- 23:46Speaker 2: a conspicuous place outside their homes with the distributor heads removed.
- 23:51Speaker 2: They were asked to turn all the lights off in
- 23:53Speaker 2: their houses. In the event they heard anyone trying to
- 23:55Speaker 2: start their cars, they would remain indoors. Ed Jacobs and
- 23:59Speaker 2: Eyes were assigned to cover two of the houses. The
- 24:02Speaker 2: other men cover the rest of them. The two houses
- 24:04Speaker 2: that Ed and I were assigned to cover were separated
- 24:06Speaker 2: by about five hundred yards.
- 24:08Speaker 5: We staked out in between the two of them. We
- 24:11Speaker 5: waited four am. Four thirty.
- 24:17Speaker 14: Sure cool. Uh yeah, bug goes right through you. You're
- 24:23Speaker 14: gonna be getting light pretty soon. Joe just remembered, Yeah,
- 24:27Speaker 14: what's that Easter morning? I wonder how long this is
- 24:31Speaker 14: gonna go. I promised to hide Easter eggs for the
- 24:33Speaker 14: kids today.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Now, if it's gonna break, it has to break soon
- 24:36Speaker 2: be daylight and a half hour or so. They won
- 24:39Speaker 2: have a chance and wait a minute.
- 24:45Speaker 8: Bomb house down on the left.
- 24:46Speaker 5: Yeah, sounds like it come on, couldn't you see the car?
- 24:51Speaker 2: Wait a minute, Yeah, you'll cover the passenger side. I'll
- 24:55Speaker 2: come up on the driver's site and watch it.
- 25:00Speaker 8: Hustle or getting out of the car.
- 25:01Speaker 2: All right, hold it up, police officers, watch you, Joe
- 25:06Speaker 2: Blair Russell.
- 25:07Speaker 9: You haven't got a chance.
- 25:08Speaker 8: Throw it on the gun, all.
- 25:11Speaker 5: Right, ed, let's give it back.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Shoo show, throw.
- 25:17Speaker 7: Off the guns.
- 25:19Speaker 8: Come to it with your hands open.
- 25:20Speaker 5: Go shoot.
- 25:21Speaker 9: Do what they say.
- 25:22Speaker 17: Come on up, go shoot that.
- 25:27Speaker 8: All right? Come on, keep coming.
- 25:31Speaker 5: That's fine enough, right, cover them and I'll shake them down.
- 25:34Speaker 8: Yeah, we'll break up Joe.
- 25:37Speaker 5: All right, you want to throw the cuffs on him?
- 25:43Speaker 2: Yeah, right, I'll go get the car.
- 25:48Speaker 5: You want to keep it covered? Ben, excuse me?
- 25:51Speaker 8: I mean sorry, too bad. He wasn't here tonight.
- 25:56Speaker 5: How can you tell for sure.
- 26:06Speaker 3: The story you have just heard was true? The names
- 26:09Speaker 3: were changed to protect the innocent.
- 26:11Speaker 4: On July sixteenth, trial was held in Superior Court, Department
- 26:14Speaker 4: eighty eighth, City and County of Los Angeles, State of California.
- 26:17Speaker 4: In a moment, the results of that trial, now here
- 26:20Speaker 4: is our star, Jack Webb.
- 26:22Speaker 2: Thank you, George Venaman. Friends, We all hope that you
- 26:25Speaker 2: enjoyed listening to Dragnet in nineteen fifty one. We all
- 26:29Speaker 2: like to think that you'll be with us during the
- 26:31Speaker 2: new year. On our part, we hope to bring you
- 26:34Speaker 2: the kind of entertainment you want.
- 26:45Speaker 4: Stanley Blair and Wesley Russell were tried and convicted on
- 26:48Speaker 4: three counts of first degree robbery and one count of kidnapping.
- 26:51Speaker 4: They received sentences as prescribed by law. First degree robbery
- 26:55Speaker 4: is punishable by imprisonment from five years to life. Kidnapping
- 26:59Speaker 4: is punishable by imprisonment for not less than one nor
- 27:02Speaker 4: more than twenty years. One count of escape is still pending.
- 27:16Speaker 4: You have just heard Dragnet, a series of authentic cases
- 27:19Speaker 4: from official files. Technical advice comes from the Office of
- 27:23Speaker 4: Chief of Police W. H. Parker, Los Angeles Police Department.
- 27:26Speaker 4: Heard Tonight where Barney Phillips and Vic Perrin. Script by
- 27:30Speaker 4: Jim Mosy, music by Walter Schumann. Hell give Me.
- 27:34Speaker 19: Speaking, Counterspy Fights International Intrigue. Next on NBC.
- 27:51Speaker 1: Welcome Back. The dedication to Yarborough at the beginning and
- 27:57Speaker 1: the plot addressing the death of Ben Romero is the
- 28:02Speaker 1: type of thing that you would expect from a modern drama,
- 28:07Speaker 1: but these were not at all typical in nineteen fifty one.
- 28:13Speaker 1: In fact, Wally Mayer, who had played the role of
- 28:16Speaker 1: Sergeant Matt Grabb on the lineup, passed away eight days later,
- 28:22Speaker 1: and the death was not even acknowledged of either Mayor
- 28:26Speaker 1: or his character. You just had Jack Moyles playing Sergeant
- 28:32Speaker 1: Pete Harger and presiding over the lineup, so that Web
- 28:38Speaker 1: decided to do this does speak to the nature of
- 28:43Speaker 1: his friendship with Barton Yarborough and the importance of Yarborough
- 28:48Speaker 1: to the series. Yarborough had been part of multiple series,
- 28:53Speaker 1: including a couple of major hits, both for Carlton Morse.
- 28:59Speaker 1: He'd play a doc in I Love a Mystery and
- 29:03Speaker 1: actually played the role in three films that brought the
- 29:08Speaker 1: series from radio to the big screen. He'd also been
- 29:14Speaker 1: part of the cast of one of America's most famous
- 29:19Speaker 1: soap operas, as Clifford Barber in One Man's Family, also
- 29:24Speaker 1: produced by Morse. Now there is no record of any
- 29:28Speaker 1: particular acknowledgement of his passing on One Man's Family, although
- 29:34Speaker 1: that and the character not being mentioned again are not
- 29:40Speaker 1: unheard of for the soap opera genre, and he actually
- 29:45Speaker 1: had been replaced on I Love A mystery back in
- 29:49Speaker 1: nineteen forty eight with Jim Bowles, our broad had a
- 29:55Speaker 1: lot of character work passed away right after filming the
- 29:59Speaker 1: second episode of Dragon. He was fifty one years old,
- 30:04Speaker 1: and his passing would change Dragnet and would definitely be
- 30:09Speaker 1: a creative challenge for Jack Webb. Now, I don't want
- 30:13Speaker 1: to oversell this because so much of this series comes
- 30:18Speaker 1: down to the storytelling style and the way that the
- 30:22Speaker 1: investigation unfolds and shows real procedures. This was not primarily
- 30:28Speaker 1: a character driven drama. It didn't have the impact that
- 30:35Speaker 1: it would have had if, say, Martin Milner or Kent
- 30:39Speaker 1: McCord died while filming Adam twelve about a decade and
- 30:44Speaker 1: a half later. But there was a place, in a
- 30:49Speaker 1: position for Ben Romero that no other partner of Joe
- 30:54Speaker 1: Friday would ever have, and we heard somewhat why during
- 31:01Speaker 1: the reflective part of the episode in which Friday stated
- 31:07Speaker 1: that Romero had been his partner from his first day
- 31:12Speaker 1: joining the force and it taught him to be a cop.
- 31:16Speaker 1: They were totally equals in terms of their even though
- 31:21Speaker 1: Friday was the main character. Both subsequent permanent partners for
- 31:27Speaker 1: Joe Friday would be outranked by him, even though they
- 31:32Speaker 1: were both older than he was. Ben Romero was also
- 31:36Speaker 1: the most effortlessly believable police officer of any of Friday's partners,
- 31:44Speaker 1: with a lot of complaining and no nonsense attitude, and
- 31:48Speaker 1: any humor being somewhat wry or deadpan. The two work
- 31:55Speaker 1: and the show had been built around them, and while
- 31:59Speaker 1: it wasn't as bad part of the show as it
- 32:02Speaker 1: would be more modern programs, Web would need to find
- 32:07Speaker 1: a new dynamic now. Some might see this episode as
- 32:12Speaker 1: slightly contradicting The Big Escape, where Friday stated he went
- 32:18Speaker 1: off to service in World War Two, so therefore couldn't
- 32:23Speaker 1: have been working all that time continuously. I would probably
- 32:28Speaker 1: not read it that way, though. It could have either
- 32:32Speaker 1: been a situation where Friday was counting back to the
- 32:37Speaker 1: time that he started and not thinking about his war service,
- 32:42Speaker 1: or had subtracted it out. But regardless, there are many
- 32:46Speaker 1: instances of larger backstory issues and numbers slipping within Dragnets,
- 32:54Speaker 1: so those things tend not to be terribly consistent. Friday's
- 32:59Speaker 1: reflection on Ben are believable and work for the character,
- 33:06Speaker 1: while also reflecting the water appeal and message of Dragnet
- 33:13Speaker 1: and it's the idea that as a police officer, Ben
- 33:18Speaker 1: Romero was part of something bigger than himself, that he
- 33:25Speaker 1: had this broader mission to protect and serve the people
- 33:30Speaker 1: of Los Angeles, and that everything he did was a
- 33:35Speaker 1: part of that mission, no matter how unimportant or tedious
- 33:42Speaker 1: the task was, or how much he complained about it,
- 33:46Speaker 1: done his part to protect and bring justice to Los Angeles.
- 33:52Speaker 1: Cask had been passed on to him by those who'd
- 33:56Speaker 1: come before, and now that would be passed onto others.
- 34:01Speaker 1: And this is where Dragnet differed from a lot of
- 34:06Speaker 1: programs that pushed people towards various careers. Oftentimes the excitement,
- 34:15Speaker 1: the adrenaline, and the cool toys are what drew people in. However,
- 34:24Speaker 1: Dragnet and I think other Jack Web shows were pretty
- 34:29Speaker 1: straightforward about the tediousness of these jobs and how monotonous
- 34:38Speaker 1: and retain and difficult they could be at times. But
- 34:42Speaker 1: what it presented viewers and those who would be inspired
- 34:47Speaker 1: by them was an opportunity to be part of something bigger,
- 34:53Speaker 1: something important, that transcended excitement or money and had a
- 35:01Speaker 1: real sense of purpose. So, again, very consistent with the
- 35:06Speaker 1: tone and message of Dragnet. Also I don't know what
- 35:09Speaker 1: it is, but of all the roles we've heard her
- 35:12Speaker 1: Butterfield in, I am having trouble buying him as a
- 35:16Speaker 1: Catholic priest. Listener comments and feedback now we go over
- 35:21Speaker 1: to Spotify were Harrison comments regarding the Big Canarityies. I
- 35:26Speaker 1: agree with you about programs dialing it to eleven. I'm
- 35:29Speaker 1: looking at you, mister chameleon. One of the best things
- 35:32Speaker 1: Dragnet does is when they let the villain just talk
- 35:35Speaker 1: themselves into a confession. Stacy Harris is really good at
- 35:38Speaker 1: the slow breakdown. Joyce McCluskey's performance is another one of those.
- 35:43Speaker 1: I remember listening to this once before and I had
- 35:46Speaker 1: to stop what I was doing because I was just
- 35:48Speaker 1: so surprised by one scene after another. The only odd
- 35:53Speaker 1: part was having the journalists tag along like that.
- 35:57Speaker 7: Well.
- 35:57Speaker 1: I appreciate the comment Harrison. Now, of course, another series
- 36:03Speaker 1: we're playing, The Big Story, makes it clear that there
- 36:06Speaker 1: is something to be said about journalists hanging around and
- 36:11Speaker 1: being part of the scenery with police investigations, but it
- 36:16Speaker 1: does seem to vary from case to case. Rarely does
- 36:20Speaker 1: happen in Dragnet, and I agree, not certainly what the
- 36:23Speaker 1: point was in this particular story. Well, now it's time
- 36:28Speaker 1: to thank our Patreon supporter of the day, and I
- 36:31Speaker 1: want to thank Sheila, Patreon supporter since February twenty twenty,

- 36:42Speaker 1: so much for your support, Sheila, And that will do

- 37:09Speaker 13: Why not?
- 37:10Speaker 17: What would he ever do with the junk I keep
- 37:11Speaker 17: stashed away in it?
- 37:13Speaker 20: What kind of shock?
- 37:15Speaker 17: Some odds and names and necklaces and roaches and rings,
