- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 163 — can you believe it? We're really getting somewhere. Lucas: We are. And today, we're adding two more adjectives. Simple, useful ones. Luna: Ooh, I love adjectives. Okay, hit me. Lucas: So, 'good' in Malay is 'baik'. Say it with me: baik. Luna: baik. Baik. That's nice. Sounds like 'bike' with an 'a'. Lucas: Exactly. And 'bad' is 'jahat'. Jahat. Luna: Jahat. Jahat. Hmm, that one sounds a bit harsher. Lucas: It does. So, a simple sentence: 'Dia baik' — he or she is good. Luna: Dia baik. So if someone is nice, I say 'Dia baik'. Lucas: Exactly. And if someone is not nice, 'Dia jahat'. Luna: Dia jahat. But hopefully I don't have to say that too often. Lucas: Right. Now let's use them with objects. 'Buku ini baik' — this book is good. Luna: Buku ini baik. So 'ini' means 'this', and 'baik' describes it. Lucas: You got it. And 'Makanan ini jahat' — this food is bad. Luna: Makanan ini jahat. Wait, can we say that at a restaurant? Lucas: You could, but it might be rude. Better to say 'Makanan ini tidak sedap' — not tasty. But for practice, it works. Luna: Okay, so 'jahat' is more like 'evil', not just 'bad quality'. Lucas: Yes, for food, 'tidak sedap' is better. But for a person or action, 'jahat' works. Luna: Got it. So 'Dia jahat' means a bad person. Lucas: Exactly. Let's practice a mini-scene. Imagine you're at a restaurant and the food is good. You say...? Luna: Umm... 'Makanan ini baik'? Lucas: That works, though usually we say 'sedap' for delicious. But 'baik' is fine in a pinch. Luna: Okay, I'll remember that. So what do I say if the service is good? Lucas: 'Perkhidmatan ini baik' — this service is good. Luna: Perkhidmatan ini baik. That's a mouthful. Lucas: It is. But you can also just say 'baik' on its own, like 'Good.' Luna: Oh, that's easy. 'Baik.' Like, 'Baik, terima kasih.' Lucas: Exactly. Now let's try a sentence with 'jahat'. 'Anjing itu jahat' — that dog is bad. Luna: Anjing itu jahat. So 'itu' means 'that'. Lucas: Right. You're catching on. Luna: I feel like I can describe everything now: baik, jahat, besar, kecil... Lucas: You're building a toolbox. Let's do one more: 'Filem ini baik' — this film is good. Luna: Filem ini baik. I'd say that for sure. Lucas: Okay, let's review today's words and sentences one more time. Luna: Yes, please. Lucas: Baik — good. Jahat — bad. Dia baik — he/she is good. Dia jahat — he/she is bad. Buku ini baik — this book is good. Makanan ini jahat — this food is bad. Luna: Baik, jahat, Dia baik, Dia jahat, Buku ini baik, Makanan ini jahat. I think I've got it. Lucas: You do. And if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Malay, a handful of listeners chip in monthly through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. That's what funds making this many of these. Luna: Yeah, it's a small group, but it keeps the show ad-free and going. We appreciate every single one. Lucas: So, let's practice one more time. I'll say English, you say Malay. 'Good.' Luna: Baik. Lucas: 'Bad.' Luna: Jahat. Lucas: 'He is good.' Luna: Dia baik. Lucas: 'This food is bad.' Luna: Makanan ini jahat. Lucas: Perfect. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time. Luna: Sampai jumpa! Lucas: Sampai jumpa! Bye.
