Speaker 1: The Island of Doctor Moreau by H. G. Wells introduction
• 0:08
Speaker 1: on February the first, eighteen eighty seven. The Lady Vain
• 0:11
Speaker 1: was lost by collision with a derelict when about the
• 0:14
Speaker 1: latitude one degree south and longitude one hundred seven degrees
• 0:18
Speaker 1: west on January the fifth, eighteen eighty seven, that is,
• 0:23
Speaker 1: eleven months and four days after my uncle Edward Prendick,
• 0:28
Speaker 1: a private gentleman who certainly went aboard the Lady Vain
• 0:31
Speaker 1: at Callao, and who had been considered drowned, was picked
• 0:35
Speaker 1: up in latitude five degrees three minutes south and longitude
• 0:39
Speaker 1: one hundred one degrees west, in a small open boat
• 0:42
Speaker 1: of which the name was illegible, but which is supposed
• 0:46
Speaker 1: to have belonged to the missing schooner, a Pecaquana. He
• 0:50
Speaker 1: gave such a strange account of himself that he was
• 0:52
Speaker 1: supposed to minted. Subsequently, he alleged that his mind was
• 0:56
Speaker 1: a blank from the moment of his escape from the
• 0:58
Speaker 1: Lady Vain. His case was discussed among psychologists at the
• 1:03
Speaker 1: time as a curious instance of the lapse of memory
• 1:06
Speaker 1: consequence upon physical and mental stress. The following narrative was
• 1:11
Speaker 1: found among his papers by the undersigned, his nephew an heir,
• 1:16
Speaker 1: but unaccompanied by any definite request for publication. The only
• 1:22
Speaker 1: island known to exist in the region at which my
• 1:24
Speaker 1: uncle was picked up is Noble's Isle, a small volcanic
• 1:28
Speaker 1: islet and uninhabited. It was visited in eighteen ninety one
• 1:32
Speaker 1: by each Ams Scorpion. A party of sailors then landed,
• 1:35
Speaker 1: but found nothing living thereon except certain curious white moths,
• 1:39
Speaker 1: some hogs and rabbits, and some rather peculiar rats. So
• 1:44
Speaker 1: that this narrative is without confirmation in its most essential particular.
• 1:48
Speaker 1: With that understood, there seems no harm in putting this
• 1:51
Speaker 1: strange story before the public in accordance, as I believe,
• 1:54
Speaker 1: with my uncle's intentions. There is at least this much
• 1:59
Speaker 1: in its behalf. My uncle passed out of human knowledge
• 2:02
Speaker 1: about latitude five degrees south and longitude one hundred five
• 2:05
Speaker 1: degrees east, and reappeared in the same part of the
• 2:08
Speaker 1: ocean after a space of eleven months. In some way
• 2:12
Speaker 1: he must have lived during the interval, and it seems
• 2:15
Speaker 1: that a schooner called the Ipecacuana, with the drunken captain
• 2:18
Speaker 1: John Davies, did start from Africa with a puma and
• 2:22
Speaker 1: certain other animals aboard in January eighteen eighty seven, and
• 2:26
Speaker 1: that the vessel was well known at several ports in
• 2:29
Speaker 1: the South Pacific, and that it finally disappeared from those seas,
• 2:33
Speaker 1: with a considerable amount of copra aboard, sailing to its
• 2:37
Speaker 1: unknown fate from Bayna in December eighteen eighty seven, a
• 2:41
Speaker 1: date that tallies entirely with my uncle's story. Charles Edward Prendick.
