Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, and welcome to another episode of Good Hang.
- 0:03Speaker 1: This is an exciting one. I'm starting this episode in
- 0:06Speaker 1: Los Angeles, and then I'm getting on an airplane, and
- 0:09Speaker 1: I'm flying to New York, where I go to that
- 0:12Speaker 1: studio and talk to Abby Jacobson and Alana Glazer, the
- 0:17Speaker 1: stars of Broad City, just the sweetest, most wonderful, talented
- 0:23Speaker 1: women who, in many ways, helped my company Paper Kite
- 0:28Speaker 1: grow and expand into what it is today. And I
- 0:32Speaker 1: cannot wait to talk to them. We're going to talk
- 0:34Speaker 1: about Broad City, the show, of course, and getting that
- 0:37Speaker 1: made and what it was like to do it together.
- 0:38Speaker 2: We're going to talk about female friendships.
- 0:40Speaker 1: We're going to talk about, you know, life as a
- 0:43Speaker 1: millennial and how it's changed and what is nostalgia.
- 0:47Speaker 2: And hopefully we're going to get to all of those things.
- 0:50Speaker 1: But I always like to start these episodes with people, um,
- 0:54Speaker 1: who know our guests, who have good feelings and thoughts
- 0:58Speaker 1: about our guests and want to give me questions to
- 1:00Speaker 1: ask the guests. And I thought, no better people to
- 1:04Speaker 1: ask than the women who run Paper Kite Productions, the co-heads,
- 1:08Speaker 1: the co-presidents of Paper Kite, Kate Arendt and Kim Lessing,
- 1:13Speaker 1: who work with me every day and who are going
- 1:16Speaker 1: to join me in this studio to talk about Abby
- 1:19Speaker 1: and Alana.
- 1:20Speaker 2: So, ladies, welcome!
- 1:22Speaker 3: Woo!
- 1:24Speaker 1: This episode of Good Hang is presented by Walmart. School supplies,
- 1:27Speaker 1: we all remember getting them. I remember trapper keepers and
- 1:30Speaker 1: so many colored pens, but now I'm sure there's a
- 1:33Speaker 1: million more things to get And thankfully, Walmart has essential
- 1:37Speaker 1: back-to-school supplies starting at 25 cents, plus all the latest
- 1:41Speaker 1: tech starting at $ 9.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Who knew?
- 1:44Speaker 1: Hello Kitty pencil cases, Nintendo notebooks, food-shaped erasers, Chromebooks, keyboards,
- 1:50Speaker 1: and more at low Walmart prices. They even have Lilo
- 1:53Speaker 1: and Stitch headphones.
- 1:55Speaker 4: Who knew?
- 1:57Speaker 1: Shop Walmart.com to score their favorite back-to-school tech and supplies.
- 2:01Speaker 4: Yeah!
- 2:09Speaker 1: Kate Aaron and Kim Lessing sharing a laptop today.
- 2:15Speaker 4: That's how we work.
- 2:16Speaker 2: We just have the one. Let's all work on our laptops.
- 2:18Speaker 5: Hold on, Amy.
- 2:18Speaker 4: We have to run your company. One second.
- 2:21Speaker 6: And send.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Send. Sorry.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Okay, I'm so excited to interview you guys because we
- 2:29Speaker 1: are here in the studio and next door to Paper
- 2:32Speaker 1: Kite Offices.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Which you co-run.
- 2:34Speaker 1: And we're talking to Abby and Alana about Broad City.
- 2:38Speaker 1: And it just felt like it was such a great
- 2:40Speaker 1: combo because.
- 2:43Speaker 2: In many ways, you represent millennial and zillennial.
- 2:48Speaker 7: No.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Or jillennial.
- 2:51Speaker 8: Jen, why?
- 2:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Gen Z.
- 2:53Speaker 6: I'm so cuspy.
- 2:54Speaker 4: You're cuspy. But it's not with Gen Z. But not
- 2:56Speaker 4: with the Z.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Anyway, you two represent teamwork in many ways, and I
- 3:03Speaker 1: want to talk about that. But also, you know how
- 3:07Speaker 1: important that show was to Paper Kite and its growth.
- 3:10Speaker 1: So before we start, tell everybody what you do here
- 3:13Speaker 1: at the company.
- 3:14Speaker 2: What's your job?
- 3:14Speaker 6: So Kim and I, as Amy said, we're the co-presidents
- 3:17Speaker 6: of Paper Kite Productions. And We are in charge of
- 3:21Speaker 6: the many incredible shows and movies that Paper Kite makes.
- 3:26Speaker 6: Everything from Broad City to Russian Doll, Difficult People, Harlem.
- 3:30Speaker 4: Yeah, we're producers. We don't produce as a team. We
- 3:32Speaker 4: actually produce separately. And we really take on projects based
- 3:36Speaker 4: on our passion for them, our availability. We really are...
- 3:40Speaker 4: We like to describe ourselves as the engines of projects,
- 3:43Speaker 4: the connectors of projects. And we really love... We really
- 3:48Speaker 4: love every second of doing it.
- 3:50Speaker 6: And we've been here working with Amy for 10 plus years.
- 3:54Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 3:55Speaker 3: We will never leave.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Never.
- 3:57Speaker 3: That's right.
- 3:58Speaker 4: She'll have to drag us out of here.
- 3:59Speaker 2: We have the keys to this.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Well, you do really have all the secrets. Yeah.
- 4:03Speaker 4: And they're bad. I'm so nervous.
- 4:08Speaker 2: But, like, I was just trying to do the math
- 4:11Speaker 2: of the timing.
- 4:12Speaker 4: Oh, we both started on Broad City. Yeah, so tell me.
- 4:14Speaker 1: How you started on that show and, like, what your
- 4:17Speaker 1: memories of the early Broad City days.
- 4:19Speaker 4: Well, I actually started on the Comedy Central side.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Right.
- 4:21Speaker 4: So I was, like, thrilled to get this job at
- 4:24Speaker 4: Comedy Central because they were making Broad City. And then
- 4:26Speaker 4: I ended up leaving Comedy Central to come work with you.
- 4:29Speaker 4: And I got to work even closer to the ladies
- 4:31Speaker 4: on Broad City. And it was like, I knew I
- 4:33Speaker 4: was in the right place because I felt like I
- 4:35Speaker 4: was making something that actually genuinely represented my life and
- 4:38Speaker 4: genuinely represented the types of friendships I was having.
- 4:42Speaker 6: So when I first interviewed with Amy, I had just
- 4:44Speaker 6: watched season one of Broad City. And I remember being like,
- 4:46Speaker 6: holy shit, I've never seen queens like this on tv
- 4:50Speaker 6: before like no one's ever existed like this on television
- 4:53Speaker 6: my age doing the kind of stuff my friends and
- 4:55Speaker 6: i do say speaking the way that we speak and
- 4:58Speaker 6: my first day of paper kite amy and i did
- 5:00Speaker 6: notes on a season two episode and i was like
- 5:04Speaker 6: is this real life like what is happening and that
- 5:07Speaker 6: was your first day yeah well maybe my second but.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Yeah i got to like send my boss at the
- 5:12Speaker 4: time my notes on the cut one of the first
- 5:15Speaker 4: cuts i think i started on season three actually And
- 5:18Speaker 4: she used some of them, and I was like, I've
- 5:20Speaker 4: made it in entertainment. I was like, I'm in. I
- 5:23Speaker 4: was so happy. But we used to do a lot of, like,
- 5:26Speaker 4: are you Abby? Are you who's who?
- 5:29Speaker 8: It wasn't a hard.
- 5:30Speaker 4: One to really say.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I want to talk about it, because what is
- 5:33Speaker 1: so cool about that show is it creates these versions of, like, friends. And,
- 5:41Speaker 1: you know, much like, you know, back in the day,
- 5:44Speaker 1: like Laverne and Shirley or even the Golden Girls or
- 5:47Speaker 1: Sex and the City, like when you start being like,
- 5:50Speaker 1: are you an Abby or an Alana? What I think
- 5:53Speaker 1: underneath that is it proves like the writing is good
- 5:55Speaker 1: that you've, identified what version of you.
- 6:00Speaker 4: It was such a specific friendship that it was completely
- 6:03Speaker 4: and utterly universal. Like you just, everyone was either an
- 6:06Speaker 4: Abby or an Alana.
- 6:07Speaker 8: So what are you, Kim?
- 6:08Speaker 4: I'm obviously Alana because I'm like head over heels in
- 6:11Speaker 4: love with Kate and always have been and always try
- 6:13Speaker 4: to touch her butt.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:14Speaker 4: It started with me being like, can I? And then
- 6:17Speaker 4: she was like, you're being like, I'm sorry. I mean,
- 6:20Speaker 4: I would never do that at work.
- 6:21Speaker 2: That's insane. That's not okay at the workplace. But like
- 6:22Speaker 2: when we left the office.
- 6:23Speaker 4: But when we left the office, like on the way
- 6:25Speaker 4: to the cars.
- 6:25Speaker 6: In the parking lot.
- 6:29Speaker 2: And so Kate, you are an Abby.
- 6:31Speaker 6: I'm Abby.
- 6:31Speaker 5: She's also a deadhead.
- 6:32Speaker 6: Yeah, and we both love Oprah, so.
- 6:35Speaker 2: That kind of stuff.
- 6:36Speaker 4: And you guys have that crazy Oprah connection where you
- 6:38Speaker 4: both like her.
- 6:40Speaker 2: So for people who don't know about what we.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Do, right, so we're a film and production company. We
- 6:46Speaker 1: do all different kinds of projects, animated, unscripted.
- 6:51Speaker 2: We do half hours. We do hour-long dramas.
- 6:54Speaker 1: But Broad City, we use it a lot as an
- 6:57Speaker 1: example when we're talking to creators about projects you know,
- 7:01Speaker 1: young creators who have an idea and want to transfer it.
- 7:05Speaker 1: And could you speak a little bit to how we
- 7:07Speaker 1: use that as an example?
- 7:08Speaker 6: We always say like Broad City is our North Star
- 7:11Speaker 6: and it is the North Star. I think if you
- 7:13Speaker 6: are a young female creator in comedy in the last
- 7:17Speaker 6: 10 years, that's it. Like they did the thing that
- 7:21Speaker 6: everybody wished they could do that men had been doing
- 7:24Speaker 6: for a long time. There was truly, like we said before,
- 7:27Speaker 6: no one liked them. So we always refer to them
- 7:29Speaker 6: as kind of they're enmeshed in our ethos as a company.
- 7:33Speaker 4: Yeah, and they have a lot of elements of things
- 7:35Speaker 4: that we really resonate with, like scrappy underdogs, women who
- 7:39Speaker 4: love each other, people that have messy edges, and also
- 7:43Speaker 4: two characters that really want something. What I always related
- 7:46Speaker 4: to about Abby and Alana is even though they were
- 7:49Speaker 4: silly and messy, they always really went after the things
- 7:52Speaker 4: they wanted. They went after it with such passion.
- 7:55Speaker 6: Yeah, and they took such good care of each other,
- 7:57Speaker 6: which is such, friendship is so important to us. We
- 7:59Speaker 6: had a conversation day one. If there's any sense of
- 8:01Speaker 6: competition or jealousy, we have to talk about it. We
- 8:04Speaker 6: have to get it out because it will just sit
- 8:06Speaker 6: in and fester and make it stressful and miserable. And
- 8:10Speaker 6: communication just, we were smart enough to know then that
- 8:14Speaker 6: it was the thing that was going to get us through.
- 8:15Speaker 6: And today, 11 years later, it's still, we're so brutally
- 8:18Speaker 6: honest with each other. And then we say thank you
- 8:20Speaker 6: to the other person that we can be so brutally
- 8:22Speaker 6: honest with each other. And I feel like Abby and
- 8:25Speaker 6: Alana were like that.
- 8:26Speaker 4: Totally. And just the other day, for example, Kate was like,
- 8:29Speaker 4: You interrupted me a thousand times. And I was like,
- 8:31Speaker 4: thank you so much for letting me know. We both
- 8:33Speaker 4: cried because it was so nice.
- 8:33Speaker 3: We both cried.
- 8:34Speaker 4: And I was like, I'm so glad you feel comfortable
- 8:36Speaker 4: telling me. And she was like, I'm so glad you're
- 8:37Speaker 4: going to stop.
- 8:42Speaker 3: It's true.
- 8:43Speaker 2: But, you know, we talk about it a lot here.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Like, you know, a workplace is— I like to say
- 8:48Speaker 1: it's not a family, it's a country.
- 8:50Speaker 4: And I like to say it's a family.
- 8:52Speaker 6: We reject that, but that's great.
- 8:54Speaker 4: Lovers are family.
- 8:58Speaker 2: It's a bed full of lovers.
- 8:59Speaker 8: It's a bed full of lovers who are all related.
- 9:01Speaker 4: It is not. A family of lovers.
- 9:05Speaker 2: It's a family that everyone borrowed money from each other.
- 9:08Speaker 1: That's right. No, a workplace is a country and it
- 9:12Speaker 1: has its own culture and language and set of rules.
- 9:15Speaker 1: And so one of the things I think that our
- 9:18Speaker 1: country believes in is that in our experience, female friendships
- 9:24Speaker 1: are a natural resource. They are like the most important
- 9:27Speaker 1: things in our life. And for the most part, they're
- 9:29Speaker 1: not like these competitive, awful experiences. They're often like the
- 9:36Speaker 1: most supportive experiences.
- 9:38Speaker 5: Experiences.
- 9:38Speaker 1: And I feel like you're talking exactly about that, that
- 9:43Speaker 1: women often come together and help each other in real time.
- 9:47Speaker 1: And that help is like, you know, like rooting for
- 9:50Speaker 1: other people's success never gets in the way of your own, basically.
- 9:54Speaker 4: But that it's hard to remember that sometimes. And I
- 9:57Speaker 4: think a lot of work environments are not conducive. Like,
- 10:00Speaker 4: ours was easy. You're our mentor. Like, it was easy
- 10:03Speaker 4: to be like, let's team up, you know? But it
- 10:06Speaker 4: sometimes takes a lot of work, but I think there's
- 10:09Speaker 4: never a time when it's not worth it just to try.
- 10:12Speaker 4: It's like, reach out a hand and be like, let's be, let's,
- 10:15Speaker 4: Be a team instead of enemies. A rising tide.
- 10:19Speaker 6: Lifts all boats, right? I actually think you said that once,
- 10:23Speaker 6: and it was the first time I'd heard.
- 10:24Speaker 4: She invented that quote, I think.
- 10:25Speaker 3: I think you're right.
- 10:26Speaker 2: You know, I have a laptop. Let's see who can
- 10:28Speaker 2: find who said that faster.
- 10:30Speaker 4: Okay, get to work.
- 10:31Speaker 8: Hey, I can do it faster.
- 10:34Speaker 4: Immediately friendship followed by.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Lifts all boats is an aphorism associated with what we know.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Oh, it's attributed to John F.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Kennedy.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Wow.
- 10:44Speaker 2: There is no way.
- 10:46Speaker 4: There is literally no way. That guy has a whole
- 10:48Speaker 4: bunch of quotes. That guy gets so much credit he
- 10:49Speaker 4: doesn't deserve. How dare you? I know you're obsessed.
- 10:53Speaker 2: He is the first Irish Catholic. There's nothing wrong with JFK.
- 10:57Speaker 6: He's literally so handsome.
- 10:59Speaker 5: Relax.
- 11:00Speaker 1: My grandmother had a picture of Jesus and JFK in
- 11:04Speaker 1: her house.
- 11:04Speaker 4: We had such different grandmas.
- 11:09Speaker 1: So that brings me to Million Dollar Advice. We're talking
- 11:12Speaker 1: about the podcast that you two are doing. The new
- 11:16Speaker 1: season is going to be launching very soon. Tell us
- 11:19Speaker 1: about what that podcast is.
- 11:21Speaker 6: Okay, so our show, Million Dollar Advice, is a work
- 11:24Speaker 6: advice podcast where we have people call and email in
- 11:28Speaker 6: and we answer their work-related questions. So it can be
- 11:31Speaker 6: anything from like, how do I deal with my shitty
- 11:33Speaker 6: boss to Kim's dying for a question. about what to
- 11:37Speaker 6: do if your coworker owes you money.
- 11:38Speaker 4: I feel like there's questions you guys are not asking
- 11:42Speaker 4: us about like you loan someone money for something and
- 11:45Speaker 4: they just haven't paid you back.
- 11:46Speaker 7: How do you ask?
- 11:47Speaker 4: Like, how do you ask? When's it too soon? When's
- 11:49Speaker 4: it gone on too long?
- 11:51Speaker 2: That's a great question. That's a good question.
- 11:52Speaker 6: But basically, Kim and I, because of this amazing communication
- 11:56Speaker 6: and partnership that we have, we almost... We're like, we
- 11:59Speaker 6: got to share this because we're in on something.
- 12:01Speaker 3: I mean, our advice is so good.
- 12:03Speaker 2: It's million dollar advice.
- 12:04Speaker 4: It's at minimum million dollar advice. It's so good. And
- 12:09Speaker 4: we get each other through everything. And so many people
- 12:11Speaker 4: don't have this kind of like work friend, work sounding word.
- 12:15Speaker 6: They don't have an Alana to their Abby.
- 12:17Speaker 4: Or Kate to their Kim, some would say.
- 12:19Speaker 7: Right.
- 12:19Speaker 4: So we want to be that for people. And, you know,
- 12:22Speaker 4: our first season is like full of the types of
- 12:24Speaker 4: questions we're interested in answering. And we're... hoping for that
- 12:28Speaker 4: money question in the second one.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Yeah, so we're making more. How can people send in questions?
- 12:32Speaker 6: MillionDollarAdvicePod at gmail.com and they can send an email, you
- 12:37Speaker 6: can leave a voice note, whatever your fancy is and
- 12:40Speaker 6: we'll get back to you.
- 12:41Speaker 3: And answer your- We'll figure out if you want to
- 12:42Speaker 3: call in if you want.
- 12:43Speaker 2: We'll solve all your problems.
- 12:44Speaker 4: We'll fix your life. That's the thing. It's like, you're
- 12:46Speaker 4: wondering like, how do I fix my life? What do
- 12:48Speaker 4: I do? It's like so easy. Email million, million dollar
- 12:51Speaker 4: advice pod at gmail.com and it's done. Okay, perfect.
- 12:54Speaker 2: And then I'm going to get an airplane. I'm going
- 12:56Speaker 2: to fly to New York.
- 12:57Speaker 5: That's great.
- 12:58Speaker 2: What question do you think I should ask Abby and Alana?
- 13:01Speaker 4: I have a good one.
- 13:02Speaker 3: Okay.
- 13:02Speaker 4: I think I have a really good one.
- 13:03Speaker 6: Okay.
- 13:04Speaker 4: So when you make a show together, it's like having
- 13:07Speaker 4: a new baby. Like you're all work all the time.
- 13:10Speaker 4: And I was curious like what things they did to
- 13:12Speaker 4: fill their friendship cup and make sure that they were
- 13:15Speaker 4: still like, In love, like staying in love during like
- 13:18Speaker 4: the most, the hardest, longest hours.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Great question. Million dollar advice.
- 13:25Speaker 1: We're going to check that out. We're going to talk
- 13:26Speaker 1: about it more. Abby and Alana, we're going to see
- 13:28Speaker 1: them in New York. Thank you guys so much for
- 13:31Speaker 1: coming across the street to this studio from our offices.
- 13:35Speaker 6: Thanks for having us.

- 14:25Speaker 3: That's right.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Congratulations.
- 14:27Speaker 3: Thank you so much.
- 14:27Speaker 2: And I cannot wait to talk about it. It's very exciting.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Abby and Alana are here today.
- 14:32Speaker 1: My children, wives, sister, partners in crime, I'm very excited
- 14:39Speaker 1: you guys are here.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Thank you for doing this.
- 14:41Speaker 3: We're so excited to be here.
- 14:43Speaker 1: I was thinking about our talk today. There's just so
- 14:45Speaker 1: many things to talk about today and I was like
- 14:46Speaker 1: so excited.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Oh my gosh.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Like I have a paper and everything. For people that
- 14:54Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 14:55Speaker 1: You know, Broad City was a long-running show on Comedy
- 14:58Speaker 1: Central that Abby and Alana wrote and starred in and
- 15:00Speaker 1: directed and produced and created. And it was and is, like,
- 15:05Speaker 1: this really important show for a lot of people. And
- 15:08Speaker 1: I was thinking about the last scene today. What happened
- 15:12Speaker 1: in the last scene? And what were you trying to
- 15:15Speaker 1: say in it?
- 15:16Speaker 2: And has it lasted?
- 15:17Speaker 5: That scene came as a vision to Paul W.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Downs.
- 15:22Speaker 5: Do you remember that?
- 15:23Speaker 3: That's right.
- 15:24Speaker 5: He came in. We were writing. We wrote part of
- 15:28Speaker 5: season five in L.A. in an Airbnb.
- 15:31Speaker 7: And Paul came in one morning, and he was like,
- 15:34Speaker 7: I had a flash of the last moment. And I
- 15:38Speaker 7: think this is the scene where Alana exits the subway
- 15:43Speaker 7: in Union Square, and we've FaceTimed.
- 15:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Right?
- 15:48Speaker 7: And Alana's walking through the city, and then the camera
- 15:51Speaker 7: leaves Alana.
- 15:52Speaker 5: And sees the other pairs. I just got chills.
- 15:55Speaker 2: I know.
- 15:56Speaker 5: And he was like, that, that was like the thing.
- 15:58Speaker 7: And that was, that was what we kind of had
- 16:00Speaker 7: always talked about, which is just like, we're, we're one
- 16:04Speaker 7: of like thousands and millions of, of pairs.
- 16:09Speaker 5: And we had just been following us.
- 16:12Speaker 7: But the New York of it all was like, we
- 16:16Speaker 7: were showcasing like, oh, there's, there's these, there's Abby and
- 16:20Speaker 7: Alana's everywhere. Yes.
- 16:22Speaker 3: And, you know, we end on, do you know Marie
- 16:24Speaker 3: Faustin and Sidney Washington, the stand-ups? But to end on
- 16:28Speaker 3: Marie and Sidney was so perfect just because they're so
- 16:30Speaker 3: delicious and they're such an iconic pair themselves. Yes. Yeah.
- 16:34Speaker 3: So I think what we were, you know, trying to
- 16:37Speaker 3: say is that we followed Abby and Alana, but everybody's
- 16:41Speaker 3: got their, everybody's, if you're in your own life, oh,
- 16:44Speaker 3: you're having your own adventures and your parties and New
- 16:47Speaker 3: York is such a, always this like infinitely fruitful backdrop.
- 16:52Speaker 3: For the craziest shit to happen. I can't get over it.
- 16:56Speaker 3: I've been here 20 years. I can't get enough.
- 16:58Speaker 1: I know.
- 16:59Speaker 3: I can't get enough.
- 17:00Speaker 1: I know. And what it was and still is and
- 17:07Speaker 1: is that what you did with that ending, I think,
- 17:11Speaker 1: is you gave the show back to the people that
- 17:15Speaker 1: loved it. And that's why I think that, you know, the.
- 17:19Speaker 5: DNA— Cry, cry, cry.
- 17:21Speaker 2: I love to get people to cry.
- 17:23Speaker 1: I think it felt and still feels like one of
- 17:27Speaker 1: the big reasons why that show sticks around is exactly
- 17:31Speaker 1: what you said.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Is people— they are the main characters of their own story.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Everyone is.
- 17:37Speaker 1: And everyone feels like they're living a life that feels—
- 17:41Speaker 1: Very much like Abby and Alana's life. Like how am
- 17:43Speaker 1: I piecing together a life in real time? And the
- 17:46Speaker 1: fact that that ending was like passing the baton, it's
- 17:49Speaker 1: very deep. And I think it has to do a
- 17:52Speaker 1: lot with what we're going to talk about today in
- 17:53Speaker 1: your work. So for those people that don't know, let's.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Go back in time.
- 18:00Speaker 3: To little tiny babies.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Alana's 19.
- 18:03Speaker 4: Wow. Right?
- 18:05Speaker 1: And Abby, you guys met what age and where did
- 18:08Speaker 1: you meet? How did you two— 22.
- 18:11Speaker 7: This is so funny that this— well, I knew this was happening,
- 18:15Speaker 7: but— This.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Is 19 years ago. Wow. 19 years ago, my dog.
- 18:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 18:18Speaker 7: This is actually— this is crazy that I did this last week.
- 18:22Speaker 5: We met in a— Did what last week? Oh, I'm
- 18:25Speaker 5: going to get to.
- 18:26Speaker 4: Oh, cover that.
- 18:28Speaker 7: We met— I did ayahuasca last week, and I went
- 18:31Speaker 7: right back there. No, but we were in an improv
- 18:35Speaker 7: practice group. Like, we were both taking classes at UCB.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:40Speaker 5: I had just graduated college, moved here. You were still
- 18:44Speaker 5: at NYU.
- 18:46Speaker 7: You know, you take classes at UCB and then, like,
- 18:48Speaker 7: you've got to form a practice group, like, after school or, like,
- 18:52Speaker 7: at night after your day job. Our mutual friend, Tim Martin,
- 18:57Speaker 7: I remember he was like, I'm in this class with
- 18:59Speaker 7: these two, it's a brother and sister, and they're great.
- 19:04Speaker 5: Like, can they come and practice with us?
- 19:06Speaker 3: And we were like, yeah.
- 19:07Speaker 5: And.
- 19:08Speaker 7: Elliot and Alana came, and I was like, this.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Girl's on Arrested Development. This is crazy.
- 19:16Speaker 2: How does she have time to get off of Arrested Development?
- 19:19Speaker 5: It just ended, and I was like, it makes sense.
- 19:20Speaker 5: She's in New York.
- 19:21Speaker 3: It makes sense. You have a huge network show, and
- 19:24Speaker 3: then you go.
- 19:25Speaker 7: Do practice and crowd groups in basements.
- 19:28Speaker 3: It makes sense.
- 19:29Speaker 5: This is how I remember it. This is my side.
- 19:32Speaker 5: And then we go to McManus that night.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Which is a bar nearby the theater.
- 19:37Speaker 7: And we're sitting at the bar, you and me, and
- 19:40Speaker 7: it was like other, it was only guys in the
- 19:43Speaker 7: group except us. And we're talking, we're like, where are
- 19:45Speaker 7: you from, where are you from? And I was like
- 19:47Speaker 7: smitten with this person, like everyone that. meets Alana is
- 19:50Speaker 7: I was like this person is unlike anyone I've ever
- 19:53Speaker 7: met and not like any of my friends and we
- 19:55Speaker 7: were just like and she was like I'm from Long
- 19:58Speaker 7: Island and I was like whoa like two of my
- 19:59Speaker 7: best friends from college are from Long Island and she's
- 20:01Speaker 7: like I'm from Smithtown and I was like so are
- 20:03Speaker 7: they and I was like and then I said their
- 20:05Speaker 7: names and you were like I know them and I
- 20:06Speaker 7: was like this is not the girlfriend not the.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Man Oh, my God.
- 20:10Speaker 3: I'm literally crying.
- 20:12Speaker 7: But I remember you were— I' m going to.
- 20:14Speaker 3: Cry as well.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Wait, Alana's crying? What's making you cry, Alana?
- 20:17Speaker 3: When she said smitten, I started crying. Oh, my gosh.
- 20:20Speaker 3: That's just so sweet. And I remember, you know, dramatically
- 20:23Speaker 3: falling under the bar. You know these two same people?
- 20:28Speaker 3: It's like— We're Jews. We're from the tri-state area. Like,
- 20:31Speaker 3: not that big a deal.
- 20:32Speaker 8: Yeah, we're from, like, two and a half hours away.
- 20:35Speaker 3: But I was changed that Abby knew these two people
- 20:38Speaker 3: I knew.
- 20:38Speaker 2: But I think what you were.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Saying, what was underneath that is, like, that the universe, like,
- 20:43Speaker 1: it's why it's so thrilling to look back at how
- 20:45Speaker 1: things come together.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Because the smallest changes.
- 20:49Speaker 1: In our lives go in a completely different way. And
- 20:52Speaker 1: what you were noticing, like, the universe was giving you
- 20:54Speaker 1: some signs of, familiarity basically like it's you know if
- 20:58Speaker 1: you believe in past lives it's like oh we knew
- 21:01Speaker 1: each other before like that's the universe just like making
- 21:03Speaker 1: sure you have something to talk about so you spend
- 21:05Speaker 1: five more minutes talking so then you spend 15 minutes
- 21:08Speaker 1: talking so then you do a show together right right.
- 21:11Speaker 7: Wait real quick so on Friday I was in Chelsea
- 21:14Speaker 7: and I where I was going I'm like confronted with
- 21:18Speaker 7: McManus wow when you.
- 21:20Speaker 3: Said McManus the first time I like almost made a
- 21:22Speaker 3: joke it's like so rude but like A dumpster.
- 21:25Speaker 8: With bars, like, you know, nailed into it.
- 21:30Speaker 2: It's not exactly a bar.
- 21:31Speaker 1: For people that are listening, that used to be kind
- 21:33Speaker 1: of the place where everybody after improv shows would hang out.
- 21:36Speaker 1: And it was, like, green paper tablecloths at the time.
- 21:39Speaker 1: And the green leather seats.
- 21:41Speaker 5: Yeah, it's like.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Ass grooves, and it's never been changed out. Like, you're
- 21:45Speaker 3: sitting in our ass grooves in McAnus. Like, it's never
- 21:49Speaker 3: been updated.
- 21:50Speaker 7: Like, the people in the back were, like, unattainable. Like
- 21:53Speaker 7: at that point, we were like up at the front
- 21:55Speaker 7: being like.
- 21:56Speaker 3: There was this hierarchy at UCB that we never climbed.
- 21:59Speaker 3: We only climbed it outside of UCB through Broad City.
- 22:03Speaker 3: But yeah, the further back you went at McManus.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Like an invisible velvet road.
- 22:07Speaker 3: Yeah. But I walked in.
- 22:09Speaker 5: I went in the side door.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Wow.
- 22:11Speaker 5: Like it's crazy.
- 22:12Speaker 3: Sticky floors.
- 22:13Speaker 7: I went in and we went there so much after
- 22:17Speaker 7: that moment.
- 22:18Speaker 5: But I walked in. We even shot in there. We
- 22:20Speaker 5: shot like the cocktail cold open in McManus. We needed
- 22:24Speaker 5: to shoot there.
- 22:25Speaker 7: But I walked in and just remembered that moment I
- 22:28Speaker 7: just said of you and I at the bar.
- 22:31Speaker 3: Wow.
- 22:33Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 22:33Speaker 2: That's a real time travel moment.
- 22:35Speaker 1: And so you meet and you're like, you're not Alia Chakwat,
- 22:37Speaker 1: but I will have you two be in a scene
- 22:40Speaker 1: many years later in Broad City. But you say, OK,
- 22:43Speaker 1: I see something in you. I love being with you.
- 22:46Speaker 1: We like being with each other. And then you start creating.
- 22:49Speaker 1: What is the, would you remember like when that creative
- 22:52Speaker 1: content stuff started?
- 22:54Speaker 3: Like, you know, I think being in this improv group,
- 22:57Speaker 3: it wasn't like we got so much duo time. There
- 23:01Speaker 3: was something like, like a grit that was like a
- 23:05Speaker 3: tension that was not the same. The difference between us
- 23:08Speaker 3: that when rubbed together, you know, created this spark, this
- 23:12Speaker 3: like difference the differences about us that we were like
- 23:16Speaker 3: that's funny that's funny and i think also as women
- 23:18Speaker 3: and as young women it's you're kind of safer together
- 23:22Speaker 3: so it's it's like you're gonna cry yeah oh no
- 23:26Speaker 3: abby's correct is i love it it's so good why
- 23:30Speaker 3: do we get our makeup done makeup time yeah we're not.
- 23:35Speaker 5: Gonna get through any questions Let's.
- 23:38Speaker 8: Cry the entire time.
- 23:39Speaker 3: And I'm going to get one on Beck. Tissue on Beck.
- 23:43Speaker 3: But it's like, you know, I think it's so much
- 23:46Speaker 3: about sameness when you're young, when you're a young woman.
- 23:49Speaker 3: But we were, I think, secure enough with each other
- 23:51Speaker 3: to recognize our differences and it tickled us. And beyond
- 23:55Speaker 3: our sense of humor that was both, you know, Venn
- 23:57Speaker 3: diagram shared and different. It was also like our work ethic.
- 24:00Speaker 3: We were like desperate to make a spreadsheet. you know?
- 24:04Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 24:04Speaker 3: And we're like, we had these ideas and we were
- 24:06Speaker 3: like desperate to list them neatly.
- 24:09Speaker 1: I mean, that is, I think a lot of like your,
- 24:15Speaker 1: when you get out of college in that time period
- 24:17Speaker 1: where you're like, I need to give.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Myself a job.
- 24:20Speaker 1: I need to be busy because I've, you know, up
- 24:24Speaker 1: until now, schoolwork has kept me busy and like the
- 24:26Speaker 1: course or whatever that I've been on has kept me busy.
- 24:28Speaker 1: But you're like, Now I have to structure my own busyness.
- 24:31Speaker 1: I have to create busy things.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Something that's just that's coming up for me is all
- 24:34Speaker 3: three of us having worked so much in food and service,
- 24:39Speaker 3: you know, and there's so much busyness in that.
- 24:41Speaker 5: I just texted you about Steamer's Landing.
- 24:43Speaker 3: You just texted me about it?
- 24:44Speaker 6: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:45Speaker 5: I was like, what was that place you worked? Was
- 24:46Speaker 5: it actually called Steamer's Landing?
- 24:49Speaker 3: Like, disgusting.
- 24:51Speaker 8: Even if they still exist.
- 24:52Speaker 2: I bet the French fries are good, though, at Steamer's Landing.
- 24:55Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. But in Broad City, Paul Muccia had changed
- 24:59Speaker 3: it in a script to Dumpers Post. Yeah. And I
- 25:04Speaker 3: remember we were at the office and we were, like,
- 25:07Speaker 3: first reading a script that they got back to us.
- 25:09Speaker 3: I fell to my knees. Like, bent over a couch,
- 25:13Speaker 3: fell to my knees, dumper.
- 25:14Speaker 1: And we're talking about Paul Downs and Lucia Agnello who
- 25:18Speaker 1: went on, are now creators of Hacks and who, you know,
- 25:22Speaker 1: wrote and directed and produced with you and us Broad City. So, like,
- 25:28Speaker 1: they also have their, like, baby versions of this experience.
- 25:32Speaker 3: That's right.
- 25:32Speaker 5: So we did this podcast.
- 25:34Speaker 7: Improv group for like two years before doing anything Broad City.
- 25:38Speaker 7: But it was the two of them actually who we
- 25:42Speaker 7: made one episode of Broad City, the web series. And
- 25:45Speaker 7: we were like, again, as Alana said, so organized, so organized.
- 25:48Speaker 7: And it was the two of them who saw it
- 25:50Speaker 7: and emailed us and loved it.
- 25:53Speaker 3: The first web episode came out and they emailed us immediately.
- 25:56Speaker 3: Keep doing this.
- 25:57Speaker 1: So when you guys were in your second season of
- 26:00Speaker 1: this web series in 2011- I was down the street
- 26:05Speaker 1: living in the West Village and I get a text
- 26:09Speaker 1: from a Upright Citizens Brigade teacher.
- 26:13Speaker 2: Was it Will Hines? Yeah.
- 26:16Speaker 1: And he said, hey, check out Abby and Alana. They're
- 26:21Speaker 1: doing some great. web series stuff and they wanted to
- 26:25Speaker 1: know if you want to do it and so I
- 26:27Speaker 1: watched a bunch of your stuff and I thought it
- 26:28Speaker 1: was really funny and it was shooting right down the
- 26:30Speaker 1: street from my house and you two asked me to
- 26:33Speaker 1: come do a small bit we were like um running
- 26:37Speaker 1: away and I remember oranges fell on me at one
- 26:40Speaker 1: point there were I don't remember anything about the plot.
- 26:43Speaker 3: What was the there's barely what was the plot we
- 26:45Speaker 3: were running we were running we were running and we
- 26:47Speaker 3: were trying.
- 26:48Speaker 9: To get toward it spoiler cookie the plot was very
- 26:52Speaker 9: broad city we were running to get a cookie yeah
- 26:54Speaker 9: um and um and then after that as far as
- 26:58Speaker 9: i remember very soon after you sent me an email
- 27:01Speaker 9: saying saying what i.
- 27:04Speaker 7: Remember this very well we that last episode of the
- 27:08Speaker 7: web series we knew we wanted to be the last
- 27:10Speaker 7: one it was like more production value we like worked
- 27:13Speaker 7: with this director who it was just like bigger and
- 27:17Speaker 7: uh we we emailed you with the cut maybe of
- 27:22Speaker 7: it and said, this is our, we've been thinking and
- 27:27Speaker 7: we want to go to L.A. and pitch this as
- 27:29Speaker 7: a show. Would you ever consider being the executive producer
- 27:32Speaker 7: on it?
- 27:33Speaker 3: We were also like kind of excited that we were
- 27:35Speaker 3: like pretty much the same height. And when we first met,
- 27:38Speaker 3: and it was just like, this is funny. Yeah, we
- 27:40Speaker 3: all love being short. Literally seeing eye to eye. And
- 27:43Speaker 3: I remember being like, well, we might send it to
- 27:45Speaker 3: Jonah Hill. And we knew we were going to ask you,
- 27:47Speaker 3: but we weren't going to ask you on the spot
- 27:49Speaker 3: that day.
- 27:49Speaker 1: I'm just here to say it was a genius move
- 27:52Speaker 1: to say you were going to send it to Jonah Hill. Girl.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Incredible move.
- 27:56Speaker 3: Girl, your face. I will never forget.
- 27:57Speaker 5: If you hadn't mentioned it, you were like, no way.
- 27:59Speaker 8: That's what you did.
- 28:01Speaker 2: I remember being like, whoa, whoa, whoa. What the— I
- 28:05Speaker 2: remember just.
- 28:06Speaker 3: Being like, she was, like, pissed, immediately pissed.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Immediately, like, in the race, like, taking, like, immediately, because
- 28:12Speaker 1: I am competitive, but I remember thinking, like, no, Jonah
- 28:15Speaker 1: Hill can't take, he has broads.
- 28:17Speaker 8: And this was not a ploy.
- 28:19Speaker 3: No.
- 28:19Speaker 5: We really were like.
- 28:21Speaker 3: Jonah Hill, you know what I mean, whatever. But, like,
- 28:24Speaker 3: you know, but I remember your expression, you know, and, like,
- 28:29Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 28:29Speaker 1: I remember just thinking later, like, You know, it's always
- 28:32Speaker 1: smart to– it's like in relationship, it's okay sometimes to
- 28:37Speaker 1: be like, you're not the only one circling here, honey.
- 28:39Speaker 3: I'm dating, babe.
- 28:40Speaker 2: I'm dating.
- 28:41Speaker 3: You think I'm just waiting around?
- 28:42Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:42Speaker 1: I'm not going to– okay.
- 28:46Speaker 2: So you sent me the email and I was like,
- 28:48Speaker 2: let's go. We're in. And we started developing together.
- 28:50Speaker 3: Wait, can I just say one thing? Yeah. Your response
- 28:53Speaker 3: to that email I think was the biggest celebration of
- 28:55Speaker 3: the entire– 10 years.
- 28:58Speaker 5: I remember it was on my, I think I called you.
- 29:02Speaker 3: And I was like shooting some short film upstate. And
- 29:04Speaker 3: she was like upstate in the middle of nowhere.
- 29:05Speaker 5: I was like, you clearly didn't open your email.
- 29:09Speaker 2: And like we were freaking out.
- 29:11Speaker 5: I was like, I think I had to leave a party.
- 29:13Speaker 5: I left a birthday party.
- 29:15Speaker 3: It was like, it was crazy.
- 29:17Speaker 5: That was it.
- 29:18Speaker 3: Like I remember all the other milestones, but you saying
- 29:21Speaker 3: you were going to, like that was like your hero
- 29:24Speaker 3: believes in you. That was crazy. Oh, I'm glad you.
- 29:27Speaker 5: Feel that way. And then you remember we met. Okay,
- 29:29Speaker 5: you were like, well, let's meet about it.
- 29:31Speaker 3: Oh.
- 29:31Speaker 5: Okay, let's meet about it. We met before we met
- 29:35Speaker 5: for like a good hour.
- 29:37Speaker 3: We were like, okay.
- 29:38Speaker 8: Just to like preview.
- 29:40Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 29:40Speaker 8: Yeah, we were like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 29:42Speaker 5: And we're like, what's it going to be like?
- 29:43Speaker 4: It could be anything.
- 29:44Speaker 3: Just in this hallway, like before we met, I was
- 29:46Speaker 3: like this forever kiddo. Amy Poehler, like you can just
- 29:49Speaker 3: picture– what your parents saw you as in the doorway
- 29:53Speaker 3: at eight. Like you're always that like, hey, you know,
- 29:57Speaker 3: and like the way you just walk down the hallway
- 29:59Speaker 3: to greet us. That was how you walk down the
- 30:01Speaker 3: fucking street. She's like, hello, you know, like all sunshine.
- 30:04Speaker 3: You're wearing these like cute sunglasses and a dress and
- 30:07Speaker 3: it's just sunshine and this like oh, you're like, your
- 30:11Speaker 3: heart is on your sleeve and it's you at eight.
- 30:14Speaker 3: And we were like, it was surreal. That was like
- 30:17Speaker 3: really like trippy, gloopy. The whole lunch was Like as
- 30:22Speaker 3: though I was tripping my balls off.
- 30:23Speaker 5: We had a meeting after it as well.
- 30:26Speaker 7: I don't know. It's been a whole day together around
- 30:29Speaker 7: the meeting.
- 30:30Speaker 5: Because I remember we were like, she watched every web.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Like you came with the legal pad.
- 30:35Speaker 5: You were like, we got to make a teaser. We
- 30:36Speaker 5: made the teaser from the web episodes.
- 30:38Speaker 3: The legal pad going through our silly little web episodes,
- 30:42Speaker 3: what you thought of each one. And we were like,
- 30:45Speaker 3: we were like, what is going on? The thoughts and the.
- 30:51Speaker 3: I don't know, real opinions.
- 30:52Speaker 7: And we were at, which I'm not going to say where,
- 30:54Speaker 7: we were at a restaurant where we were like, this
- 30:56Speaker 7: is clearly Amy's favorite restaurant.
- 30:59Speaker 8: Got like, you know, those like sort of.
- 31:01Speaker 5: I was.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Like saying hello to everybody. Hello, George, how's your wife?
- 31:05Speaker 8: Oh my God. And we're like, we'll just get toast.
- 31:09Speaker 4: You know, like we don't even know how to order
- 31:10Speaker 4: at this time.
- 31:11Speaker 3: You know, what do you get?
- 31:12Speaker 8: Well, we'll get that.
- 31:13Speaker 3: You know, like just not even knowing how to have...
- 31:16Speaker 3: like be a person.
- 31:18Speaker 1: I mean, I have just nothing but like exciting bottom
- 31:21Speaker 1: of show mountain memories of it. And, you know, I,
- 31:26Speaker 1: the reason that one of the many reasons why I'm
- 31:29Speaker 1: so thrilled that we're talking today is like to put
- 31:31Speaker 1: it in perspective for me, Broad City made me feel
- 31:34Speaker 1: like a real producer. I had been producing on parks.
- 31:38Speaker 1: I had produced other things and stuff that I had done.
- 31:41Speaker 1: And You know, we had technically produced our UCB show,
- 31:44Speaker 1: even though we didn't know what that was.
- 31:46Speaker 2: That was what we were doing.
- 31:48Speaker 1: And our sketches at SNL. But Broad City felt like
- 31:52Speaker 1: the child that made me the mother. And it's still,
- 31:56Speaker 1: when I think about it, I feel so proud to
- 31:59Speaker 1: have been along for the ride and just being helpful
- 32:08Speaker 1: in any way. But I learned so much from watching
- 32:11Speaker 1: the two of you. I learned so much from like
- 32:13Speaker 1: trying to advocate for the show I learned so much about.
- 32:17Speaker 2: What kind of stuff I wanted to make. I'm just
- 32:19Speaker 2: going to.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Fully cry now. Oh, my God.
- 32:23Speaker 4: This is it now?
- 32:27Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 32:28Speaker 9: Oh, my God.
- 32:30Speaker 8: And then plus the voice, it's like going to seem
- 32:31Speaker 8: so insane.
- 32:35Speaker 3: But it's like, dude, like, it's just like you, I
- 32:39Speaker 3: don't want to cut you off. No, no, please. But
- 32:41Speaker 3: it's like, you know, I remember this one time that
- 32:43Speaker 3: we had, lunch or whatever, and you talked about the
- 32:46Speaker 3: sexual politic of the show.
- 32:48Speaker 7: And I was like, I remember like then we'd be
- 32:53Speaker 7: like out talking and I'd be like well what we're
- 32:55Speaker 7: really trying to do is the sexual politic of the show.
- 32:59Speaker 3: Oh my god can I have like a full tissue
- 33:01Speaker 3: this gross half tissue.
- 33:03Speaker 1: But talk about sexual politic for a second very I've
- 33:07Speaker 1: said this before immediately what I learned and this is
- 33:10Speaker 1: why I love like the best thing about getting older
- 33:12Speaker 1: is like being less and less certain about everything if
- 33:14Speaker 1: you're doing it right you just know you're supposed to
- 33:16Speaker 1: be You're supposed to let go of the grasp.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Of the things you think you know.
- 33:19Speaker 1: And that is what I think young people do, people
- 33:23Speaker 1: younger than you do. And even just the very simple
- 33:25Speaker 1: way in which you guys approached your own bodies, your
- 33:28Speaker 1: own bodies in space, your own bodies in the show,
- 33:30Speaker 1: the way you approached— I mean, I remember very specifically saying,
- 33:35Speaker 1: you know— you know, if.
- 33:38Speaker 2: You don't want to get in your underwear for this scene.
- 33:41Speaker 5: And the pilot.
- 33:42Speaker 2: And the pilot.
- 33:42Speaker 1: If you guys feel uncomfortable. And you're like, we wrote it.
- 33:46Speaker 1: We are the ones writing that we're in our underwear.
- 33:48Speaker 1: And we're so comfortable with how the dynamic is in
- 33:52Speaker 1: the scene. We're so, like, thank you, good looking out.
- 33:55Speaker 1: But you're kind of missing the.
- 33:57Speaker 2: Point in a way.
- 33:59Speaker 1: And there was a lot of that for me where
- 34:00Speaker 1: I watched how you two– reminded me of like what
- 34:05Speaker 1: I what was like an old story or like old
- 34:08Speaker 1: programming like I think it's what Brad said he did
- 34:11Speaker 1: a lot and still does I will.
- 34:13Speaker 7: Say on that I don't know how fully comfortable I
- 34:17Speaker 7: was in those scenes but I think that was also
- 34:21Speaker 7: like okay over here we wrote it and I like
- 34:24Speaker 7: loved it so much and I knew that like Abby
- 34:27Speaker 7: as actor will have to deal with that when we
- 34:30Speaker 7: get to the day. And for me, that like, I
- 34:35Speaker 7: feel like that like Broad City was in a moment
- 34:39Speaker 7: for me of like a little bit later, like.
- 34:42Speaker 5: Huge growth.
- 34:43Speaker 7: Like I feel like I grew up a little later.
- 34:45Speaker 5: I'm gonna fully cry.
- 34:47Speaker 7: And in so many ways because of Alana, which.
- 34:51Speaker 5: Is so like the Abby and Alana, it's what's happening.
- 34:55Speaker 4: It's what's happening, like the confidence.
- 34:58Speaker 3: Like, I.
- 35:00Speaker 8: Think, first of all, like.
- 35:04Speaker 7: But the confidence, like, of that dynamic of, like, Abby
- 35:10Speaker 7: is the insecure one and Alana's got this, like, bravado.
- 35:15Speaker 7: And that's, like, something that I was, like, learning right
- 35:18Speaker 7: alongside the character because that was real.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 35:21Speaker 5: You know, like, us being.
- 35:25Speaker 7: Us being sorry I'm laughing we are but us being
- 35:28Speaker 7: the hottest women in like any room is like that
- 35:31Speaker 7: was like not how I approached going out and we
- 35:35Speaker 7: I would go out with Alana as a friend and
- 35:37Speaker 7: that would be like and I don't know if that
- 35:39Speaker 7: was like a fake it till you make it but
- 35:40Speaker 7: that was like the charge of like yeah you know
- 35:41Speaker 7: we are and my ass is like the hot like
- 35:45Speaker 7: my ass being a hot thing was not something I
- 35:49Speaker 7: ever thought we'd focus on so much I still love
- 35:52Speaker 7: it and then I was like I only, like, only
- 35:55Speaker 7: through Alana, like, that among many other things was, like,
- 35:59Speaker 7: such a huge change for me. And I think, like, so, like,
- 36:03Speaker 7: us being in our underwear, I was, like, able to be, like,
- 36:06Speaker 7: I might not be comfortable, but, like, I know this
- 36:08Speaker 7: is so right and this is so powerful and, like,
- 36:10Speaker 7: so funny.
- 36:11Speaker 1: I mean, I think that's what female friendships at their
- 36:14Speaker 1: best do is they provide this.
- 36:17Speaker 2: The opposite of a fun house mirror.
- 36:19Speaker 1: Like they provide this like beautiful mirror that you get
- 36:23Speaker 1: to look in and see this version of yourself that
- 36:25Speaker 1: your friend sees.
- 36:26Speaker 4: And you're right.
- 36:27Speaker 2: It's very, it's, it's aspirational.
- 36:29Speaker 1: It's kind of manifest-y, but it is like, you are
- 36:32Speaker 1: sexy if you say so. And you're beautiful if you
- 36:35Speaker 1: feel so. And everybody is beautiful and sexy and in
- 36:39Speaker 1: their own way. And sometimes you just can't, you have
- 36:41Speaker 1: to have like a, a surrogate feel it for you.
- 36:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:44Speaker 1: And that's what you do for each other in female friendships.
- 36:47Speaker 1: And that's what exactly what Abby and Alana did constantly.
- 36:50Speaker 1: It's just, and it's good for comedy. Like pumping each
- 36:53Speaker 1: other up is funny.
- 36:54Speaker 3: Oh, it's so funny. And, you know, to the point
- 36:56Speaker 3: before of what I was saying about sexual politic, you
- 36:58Speaker 3: just validated us as women, not as girls. Everybody called
- 37:03Speaker 3: us girls, even the people working for us, you know,
- 37:07Speaker 3: they called the girls, whatever. You called us women at
- 37:09Speaker 3: such a young time where I was like, damn, I
- 37:11Speaker 3: suppose we are. And then, you know, like with comedy,
- 37:15Speaker 3: I mean it's just– I just will never– it's just
- 37:18Speaker 3: the fucking best. Comedy is just the fucking best.
- 37:21Speaker 2: Why is it the best?
- 37:22Speaker 3: Because it's like– it's this cosmic container that just lifts
- 37:29Speaker 3: you up off the ground of like the systems we're
- 37:32Speaker 3: rooted in. And just connects people so efficiently. It's so efficient.
- 37:36Speaker 3: You know, just whatever. Obviously farts are the funniest. Someone farts.
- 37:41Speaker 2: I disagree.
- 37:42Speaker 3: Really?
- 37:42Speaker 2: I'm not the biggest fart is funny fan.
- 37:44Speaker 3: Like if somebody farts in a context where they're not
- 37:47Speaker 3: supposed to, you don't giggle? I don't think. Ish.
- 37:50Speaker 8: It really depends.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Like that was actually a big thing for us on
- 37:53Speaker 1: the set of Parks and Rec because like people would
- 37:54Speaker 1: fart and I'd be like, don't fart.
- 37:57Speaker 5: Just like in life?
- 37:59Speaker 2: Yeah, like on- I don't know if that's a- That's
- 38:01Speaker 2: not what I'm talking about.
- 38:02Speaker 1: I'm talking if they accidentally fart, I feel a little
- 38:04Speaker 1: codependently worried about them.
- 38:07Speaker 3: No, I mean like if somebody farts as a joke
- 38:09Speaker 3: to invade your space with odor, that's not cool.
- 38:12Speaker 5: That's like sibling- Yes. That's like not shenanigans. We don't
- 38:17Speaker 5: like that.
- 38:17Speaker 2: Well, when are farts ready?
- 38:19Speaker 5: Okay, so I remember a good Broad City fart. I'm
- 38:22Speaker 5: meeting your parents.
- 38:23Speaker 7: It's at like your Shiva and Bob Balaban picks me
- 38:27Speaker 7: up and we're like, and we're adding a fart there.
- 38:29Speaker 8: That's what I'm talking about.
- 38:31Speaker 3: I'm talking about professorial, masterful fart comedy.
- 38:35Speaker 5: That was really thoroughly thought out and intentional.
- 38:38Speaker 4: But you're right.
- 38:38Speaker 2: A little squeeze that comes into a little.
- 38:42Speaker 8: But we added it. It was cute.
- 38:43Speaker 4: Maybe that's it.
- 38:44Speaker 1: Maybe if the farts are cute.
- 38:46Speaker 5: Like if they're cute.
- 38:47Speaker 3: Oh, for sure. But I'm also talking about like adding
- 38:49Speaker 3: a sound effect.
- 38:50Speaker 5: We did add the sound effect.
- 38:53Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:56Speaker 5: We gotta make that clear.
- 38:57Speaker 1: I hear you.
- 38:58Speaker 3: And.
- 38:59Speaker 1: And then just to get us on the air, you
- 39:04Speaker 1: write a script.
- 39:06Speaker 2: We go to FX. We try to make it at FX.
- 39:08Speaker 2: They pass. And we kind of have a moment where
- 39:11Speaker 2: we have to regroup.
- 39:12Speaker 7: I remember just going back to what you were talking about,
- 39:15Speaker 7: maybe like when you felt like producer. I remember you
- 39:18Speaker 7: would be the one that would have to deliver that
- 39:21Speaker 7: news to us.
- 39:22Speaker 1: I did.
- 39:22Speaker 2: I learned a lot.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Yes, that was in real time I was learning on
- 39:26Speaker 1: the job you know I was like like all of
- 39:28Speaker 1: us like you sometimes fake it till you make it
- 39:30Speaker 1: you have to kind of pretend and I remember thinking
- 39:33Speaker 1: right my job here is to uh never let never
- 39:40Speaker 1: let anyone feel like you know we're not going to
- 39:42Speaker 1: solve this problem because that's just you're supposed to You're
- 39:46Speaker 1: supposed to keep the ship in the water and, you know,
- 39:48Speaker 1: and other people can steer it, but you have to
- 39:50Speaker 1: make sure it doesn't sink. And so I remember not
- 39:53Speaker 1: quite knowing where we were going to go next, but
- 39:55Speaker 1: feeling like I needed to make sure that you felt
- 39:57Speaker 1: like we were going to go somewhere good.
- 39:58Speaker 5: I think we did.
- 39:59Speaker 3: And you did. Yeah. I'm remembering now another lunch at
- 40:01Speaker 3: a place that we never would go, but we were like, totally,
- 40:04Speaker 3: we'll meet you there. And it's going to be chill. Balthazar.
- 40:07Speaker 7: Anyway.
- 40:09Speaker 8: So we, like, met for lunch.
- 40:12Speaker 3: Oh, my God. But you were like.
- 40:15Speaker 3: So, you know, lucky for us, Comedy Central had wanted us,
- 40:19Speaker 3: which isn't always the case. And you were like, FX
- 40:21Speaker 3: is like a cold boyfriend. You don't even want them.
- 40:24Speaker 1: No.
- 40:24Speaker 4: Anyway.
- 40:24Speaker 2: That would never change.
- 40:25Speaker 3: You don't want that boyfriend anyway. And it was like, yeah,
- 40:29Speaker 3: I don't.
- 40:30Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 40:31Speaker 1: And that time, Comedy Central, maybe to let people know,
- 40:34Speaker 1: we were in such good company.
- 40:36Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 40:36Speaker 2: Who else was on the air during that time?
- 40:38Speaker 3: Key and Peele. Key and Peele. It was so funny.
- 40:40Speaker 5: Workaholics who had a similar, like, web to... to TV.
- 40:45Speaker 2: Amy Schumer, inside Amy Schumer, Kroll Show.
- 40:48Speaker 5: Maybe Nathan For You.
- 40:49Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. Early Nathan Fielder. Yeah, it was such
- 40:53Speaker 2: an incredible time.
- 41:01Speaker 1: Why do you think it's come, you know, it's like
- 41:04Speaker 1: sprung back in this way right now? It must feel
- 41:07Speaker 1: good to have people still come up to you and
- 41:11Speaker 1: say they love it and And say who they think
- 41:13Speaker 1: they are.
- 41:14Speaker 3: It's also like such a newly as we are like
- 41:17Speaker 3: becoming like literally middle-aged adults. It's like such a sweet.
- 41:24Speaker 3: Such a sweet, connective thing when people talk about it.
- 41:26Speaker 3: When we were younger, they thought we improvised it. We
- 41:30Speaker 3: were like, we work so hard to write this over
- 41:33Speaker 3: and over and over again. You know, it's just improv.
- 41:35Speaker 3: It's slapped together. And that we're like stone. Like if
- 41:38Speaker 3: they're meeting us on the street, that we're stoned in
- 41:39Speaker 3: that moment or whatever.
- 41:41Speaker 8: They think you're stoned. We think we're the characters from
- 41:43Speaker 8: the show.
- 41:43Speaker 3: And like what it is now is like it's just
- 41:45Speaker 3: reached this like such a warm, sweet like bed for connection.
- 41:51Speaker 7: I don't know if you experience, I mean, when we're,
- 41:54Speaker 7: we haven't for a second been like out.
- 41:56Speaker 5: Together, but that's a whole other thing.
- 41:58Speaker 7: And people are like, what are you guys doing on
- 42:00Speaker 7: the street together? But like my wife, Jodi, like, she's like,
- 42:04Speaker 7: this is unlike anything. Like to have someone witness it.
- 42:08Speaker 7: She's like, you get this, like this wild positive affirmation,
- 42:14Speaker 7: like coming at you.
- 42:17Speaker 5: That is so rare.
- 42:19Speaker 7: That is like a really, I feel very thankful all
- 42:22Speaker 7: the time for that.
- 42:24Speaker 1: Before we move off of the Broad City section, I
- 42:26Speaker 1: do want to just for like people that are big fans,
- 42:29Speaker 1: hottest day on set, coldest day on set. Any memories
- 42:34Speaker 1: of like when you were very hot, very cold?
- 42:36Speaker 3: Everything was so sweaty, literally sweaty.
- 42:39Speaker 5: And I don't know why I was always wearing skinny jeans.
- 42:42Speaker 5: So really added to it.
- 42:43Speaker 2: Babe, it was the time.
- 42:44Speaker 7: Alana sent me something where like something happened and I
- 42:47Speaker 7: was like.
- 42:49Speaker 1: You know what's going to happen when you're 70? Because
- 42:53Speaker 1: this has now started to finally happen. Skinny jeans are
- 42:56Speaker 1: going to come back around. But people are going to
- 42:59Speaker 1: be like, this is so cool, these really tight skinny jeans.
- 43:04Speaker 2: And you're going to say, you know, I used to
- 43:06Speaker 2: wear it. It's wild.
- 43:07Speaker 3: Here's hoping. I don't know, but maybe.
- 43:09Speaker 2: I mean, remember skinny jeans? I'm trying to think of
- 43:13Speaker 2: like go out there.
- 43:14Speaker 5: They're still going out. I still see people in them.
- 43:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I see millennials being like, fuck you. I don't care.
- 43:19Speaker 3: I'm wearing skinny jeans. I feel organized in them. And
- 43:22Speaker 3: I'm like, get it.
- 43:23Speaker 2: Yeah, well, that's what I mean.
- 43:23Speaker 1: It's just now it's like all the way around to
- 43:26Speaker 1: if you're wearing skinny jeans, you're a confident person.
- 43:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 43:29Speaker 5: You're, you know. But I also had these straight down
- 43:32Speaker 5: bags for a lot of the show.
- 43:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 43:34Speaker 5: And I remember they would get, they'd be just be
- 43:36Speaker 5: fully soaking wet.
- 43:38Speaker 3: So hot.
- 43:39Speaker 8: Sopping wet bangs. Marsau would have to be like, can
- 43:42Speaker 8: you dry the bangs?
- 43:44Speaker 3: That's so funny. Yeah. That was so funny.
- 43:47Speaker 1: And guest stars, who comes to mind as people that
- 43:51Speaker 1: when you just like pops in your head is like, oh,
- 43:53Speaker 1: that was a fun day. That was a good moment.
- 43:55Speaker 1: That was– there's so many great people that came to
- 43:58Speaker 1: the show.
- 43:59Speaker 3: RuPaul just cracks me up. He was so like studying
- 44:03Speaker 3: his lines and saying them to himself that I was like, damn.
- 44:07Speaker 7: And I would say Kelly Ripa. I mean just the
- 44:11Speaker 7: way– just her personality. Being that version we wrote of
- 44:15Speaker 7: her was wild. She was so excited, too. Like, her
- 44:19Speaker 7: joy was like, oh, my God. Like, she really wanted
- 44:22Speaker 7: to be there, and it was, like, so contagious.
- 44:26Speaker 1: And do you remember Lady Gaga tweeting about the show,
- 44:29Speaker 1: how important that was?
- 44:30Speaker 5: Yes, we were in the writer's room.
- 44:32Speaker 3: That was a.
- 44:32Speaker 2: Season two, end of season one.
- 44:35Speaker 7: She was like, oh, my God, they used my song.
- 44:37Speaker 7: I think it was, like, my favorite show used my song.
- 44:41Speaker 3: And we met her. She like asked us to– or,
- 44:43Speaker 3: you know, invited us to a performance and we like
- 44:46Speaker 3: went on her bus. And like the thing she.
- 44:48Speaker 8: Was– You did go on a bus?
- 44:50Speaker 3: Yeah. It was like right outside the like performance or whatever.
- 44:53Speaker 3: And she was so kind being like you remind me
- 44:56Speaker 3: when I watch your show I feel like I'm not
- 44:58Speaker 3: famous and I'm young again and like just running around
- 45:01Speaker 3: the city before– All of this, which, you know, she
- 45:04Speaker 3: was clearly grateful for, but also was clearly quite heavy. Yeah.
- 45:08Speaker 3: And it was so many years ago. It was, like,
- 45:09Speaker 3: before now, she's, like, such a woman.
- 45:11Speaker 5: Well, it was 30 years ago.
- 45:12Speaker 2: We got her song. I mean, how did we even
- 45:14Speaker 2: afford her song?
- 45:15Speaker 3: How did we afford her song?
- 45:16Speaker 5: How did we do that?
- 45:17Speaker 3: I have no idea.
- 45:18Speaker 2: We paid for it, but how.
- 45:20Speaker 3: Did we get it?
- 45:20Speaker 7: I think she liked— it was, like, if someone involved liked
- 45:24Speaker 7: the show, someone's manager or something.
- 45:26Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 45:27Speaker 3: Right. Whoopi. Whoopi came and did a wordless background role
- 45:33Speaker 3: as Sister America.
- 45:35Speaker 5: Yeah, that was wild.
- 45:36Speaker 8: That was wild.
- 45:36Speaker 3: And I remember like meeting her and being like, and
- 45:38Speaker 3: she comes in the trailer. She is such a badass,
- 45:40Speaker 3: like so herself the same. She's exactly who you'd think
- 45:45Speaker 3: she is. And And, like, we were just, like, acting
- 45:49Speaker 3: totally cool. And we were also in stages that were, like,
- 45:52Speaker 3: illegal and, like, an abandoned building, essentially. And I was, like, well,
- 45:56Speaker 3: she was, like, leaving. And I was, like, thanks so much.
- 45:58Speaker 3: It meant so much to me. And then she left.
- 46:00Speaker 3: And I, like, immediately, like, turned around and wept and, like,
- 46:03Speaker 3: cried in rubble, in, like, Bushwick rubble that we were
- 46:07Speaker 3: filming in for some reason. Because she was so, not
- 46:11Speaker 3: only did she do our show, but, like, such a
- 46:13Speaker 3: real ass bitch. Such a, like, a comedy girl, real bitch. Woman.
- 46:17Speaker 5: Oh, my God. Shania Twain.
- 46:18Speaker 7: I think about that a lot, actually, because we we
- 46:21Speaker 7: got her to say, man, I feel like a smoothie.
- 46:24Speaker 3: I think about that a lot.
- 46:29Speaker 6: So game.
- 46:29Speaker 8: So game.
- 46:31Speaker 5: She was like that was like so crazy.
- 46:35Speaker 8: Yeah, she did that for.
- 46:36Speaker 3: I mean, you're pointing at me.
- 46:39Speaker 5: Oh, I'm like, that should be a show. That was
- 46:42Speaker 5: the bear.
- 46:43Speaker 3: We did the bear before the bear. You did the
- 46:45Speaker 3: bear before the bear.
- 46:46Speaker 1: We did the bear.
- 46:46Speaker 2: Before the bear.
- 46:47Speaker 4: You're right.
- 46:48Speaker 1: And for people, there was a scene where I was
- 46:49Speaker 1: in the back of the kitchen and there was a
- 46:51Speaker 1: whole drama with me and Seth Morris.
- 46:53Speaker 2: You guys were exes. We were exes and we just
- 46:56Speaker 2: created a little bit of a thing.
- 46:58Speaker 3: And you're right.
- 46:58Speaker 2: You know what? The bear stole. The bear stole from
- 47:02Speaker 2: Broad City. You heard it here first.
- 47:04Speaker 5: And you directed that.
- 47:05Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 47:05Speaker 3: I mean, what the fuck?
- 47:06Speaker 5: What the fuck?
- 47:09Speaker 1: So we do this thing where we talk to people
- 47:10Speaker 1: about our guests before they come on. And I was
- 47:13Speaker 1: really trying to think about who I wanted to talk to.
- 47:15Speaker 1: And what organically came up for me was Kim Lessing
- 47:19Speaker 1: and Kate Arendt, the producers, co-heads of Paper Kite, have
- 47:23Speaker 1: worked together for 10 plus years.
- 47:24Speaker 2: They are millennials.
- 47:25Speaker 1: And they started when Broad City was, I think, Kate's
- 47:29Speaker 1: second or third day was we were doing notes on
- 47:32Speaker 1: like episode two of Broad City. So I asked them
- 47:36Speaker 1: what they would want to know from you and from
- 47:41Speaker 1: a workplace perspective they were curious how did you to
- 47:46Speaker 1: keep your relationship your actual intimate friendship healthy while you
- 47:52Speaker 1: were working together and like as you've gone on to
- 47:55Speaker 1: work on other things.
- 47:57Speaker 2: Like what how do you keep your workplace healthy.
- 48:00Speaker 1: Knowing what you know now and how did you do
- 48:02Speaker 1: it then too how do you like to work and
- 48:04Speaker 1: what do you bring into your work to keep it healthy.
- 48:05Speaker 3: As incredible as it was to make Broad City it
- 48:08Speaker 3: was like we would like always make sure to have
- 48:11Speaker 3: a little time up top to connect and catch up, LOL,
- 48:14Speaker 3: catch up from 12 hours ago or whatever it was.
- 48:17Speaker 3: But like, you know, but like it just, it feels
- 48:22Speaker 3: like so, I don't know, so human to now have
- 48:26Speaker 3: dinner and just be, lately we have been like crying
- 48:29Speaker 3: so much. It's been so, it's so like juicy and
- 48:32Speaker 3: delicious and nutritious and sweet. But at the time it
- 48:36Speaker 3: was very much slotted in. To catch up. And things
- 48:39Speaker 3: would always make their way into the comedy, which is cool,
- 48:43Speaker 3: but it's not the same as it being its own,
- 48:45Speaker 3: just for the sake of its own beauty, you know?
- 48:48Speaker 7: And I think we knew that the catching up, it
- 48:51Speaker 7: was like the catching up was essential for the thing. Like,
- 48:55Speaker 7: we knew that, like, it's so derived from us, so, like,
- 48:58Speaker 7: we had to kind of, like, catch up and be like, okay, that's,
- 49:03Speaker 7: write that down for this thing.
- 49:04Speaker 1: What helped you during those times, like, What was the
- 49:07Speaker 1: stuff you like, did you pick your battles?
- 49:10Speaker 4: Did you?
- 49:10Speaker 3: Well, I think like something also was like, I'm thinking
- 49:13Speaker 3: about it too. Cause like there was tension, like rise
- 49:15Speaker 3: and release of tension constantly. And I think like a
- 49:18Speaker 3: lot of it was like boundaries. and space and being like.
- 49:22Speaker 3: See you later.
- 49:22Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah.
- 49:23Speaker 3: And, like, taking the space.
- 49:25Speaker 5: Well, we didn't, like, hang out. I think when we
- 49:27Speaker 5: were doing it, we weren't, like, we would see you
- 49:29Speaker 5: on Monday.
- 49:29Speaker 3: We weren't, like, as our friends anymore. We weren't hanging
- 49:31Speaker 3: out as friends during Broad City.
- 49:33Speaker 8: We couldn't.
- 49:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 49:34Speaker 1: So it's almost like you had to put that a
- 49:35Speaker 1: little bit aside, just, like, not let it atrophy, but
- 49:38Speaker 1: not give it a lot of oxygen while you were
- 49:40Speaker 1: doing the show.
- 49:41Speaker 3: Yeah, it was very, like, after-school club, you know what
- 49:44Speaker 3: I mean, in that it's, like, this thing of, like,
- 49:46Speaker 3: slotting in 45 minutes to talk before we focus. It's, like,
- 49:50Speaker 3: it wasn't—it is so— Like, it feels so beautiful now to, like,
- 49:54Speaker 3: just not have a task at hand, you know?
- 50:00Speaker 7: But during that time, even though we weren't on the weekends,
- 50:02Speaker 7: I would be like, you know, if something was happening,
- 50:04Speaker 7: I'd be like, Alana, I'm going on a date. Like,
- 50:06Speaker 7: what am I, what do I, it wasn't like, don't
- 50:09Speaker 7: speak to me.
- 50:10Speaker 3: Sure.
- 50:10Speaker 7: It was just like, after truly like 12, 14 hours
- 50:14Speaker 7: of Monday through Friday, we were like, let's not do.
- 50:18Speaker 5: Dinner on Saturday.
- 50:19Speaker 2: Who did you go on the date with and what
- 50:20Speaker 2: did you wear?
- 50:22Speaker 5: Well, I do.
- 50:22Speaker 7: Honestly, I remember like this is post-Broad City. I saw
- 50:26Speaker 7: you the day before I met Jodi.
- 50:28Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 50:29Speaker 5: And I was like telling you what I'm going to wear.
- 50:31Speaker 1: Your beautiful wife, Jodi. Wait, tell us that story. You
- 50:34Speaker 1: were going on a date with Jodi?
- 50:36Speaker 2: We were in L.A.
- 50:37Speaker 7: And you were staying at Liz's house. And I was like,
- 50:39Speaker 7: I'm going on a date. By going on a date,
- 50:42Speaker 7: it was like so deep COVID. She was like coming
- 50:43Speaker 7: over to my house to the patio. And I was like,
- 50:46Speaker 7: I think I'm just going to wear like– I know
- 50:49Speaker 7: what I wore.
- 50:49Speaker 5: I was like, I think I'm just going to wear
- 50:50Speaker 5: a sweater and like black.
- 50:51Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 50:52Speaker 5: Like, we were still doing that. And you were like, yeah. Like,
- 50:54Speaker 5: don't do too much, you know?
- 50:56Speaker 3: Totally.
- 50:57Speaker 2: What you wear on a date's really important.
- 51:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 51:00Speaker 5: Because it says a lot. I'm excited.
- 51:02Speaker 2: I'm not excited. I don't care. I want to have sex.
- 51:04Speaker 5: I don't want to.
- 51:05Speaker 2: Like, there's a ton of things happening.
- 51:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 51:07Speaker 1: And it worked because you bagged that babe.
- 51:10Speaker 4: Yep.
- 51:11Speaker 3: You bagged her.
- 51:12Speaker 2: You bagged that babe. That babe was obsessed.
- 51:16Speaker 3: And y'all are so beautiful and romantic. Like, you're such
- 51:20Speaker 3: a beautiful couple. I know.
- 51:21Speaker 7: Oh, my God.
- 51:21Speaker 3: So, like, also hot. Hot. Hot as fuck.
- 51:24Speaker 2: Beautiful. And both of you have had a very busy
- 51:27Speaker 2: 10 years. You become a mom. Both of you have
- 51:30Speaker 2: gotten married.
- 51:31Speaker 1: Like, you've both done a ton of different projects that
- 51:33Speaker 1: you're writing, creating. Like, there's so much that's happened. And
- 51:38Speaker 1: I guess I was curious, like, Alana, motherhood.
- 51:42Speaker 2: Is a big creative thing.
- 51:47Speaker 1: In a lot of your work. You talk about it
- 51:49Speaker 1: a lot on stage. You made a movie about it, Babes.
- 51:52Speaker 1: You have this way in which you're, like, peeling that
- 51:55Speaker 1: onion a lot. And what's it brought? How has it
- 52:00Speaker 1: expanded you and your work?
- 52:02Speaker 3: It just has organized everything for me appropriately. Things are just, like,
- 52:08Speaker 3: in their right place now, like, in my heart. And
- 52:11Speaker 3: it's been so creative. And work also, like... is work.
- 52:17Speaker 3: It's not, and it's a creative context, but it's not
- 52:22Speaker 3: like how I figure out who I am. It's a
- 52:25Speaker 3: part of who I am. Yeah, I just feel correctly organized.
- 52:29Speaker 2: That's very cool. Ab, what about the past?
- 52:31Speaker 5: That's very cool.
- 52:32Speaker 1: What about you, Ab, the past 10 years with all
- 52:34Speaker 1: the different projects you're working on and worked on? What,
- 52:38Speaker 1: how has that like changed your creative? Because, I mean,
- 52:41Speaker 1: I'm curious about you as a fine artist too.
- 52:43Speaker 2: I mean, you're like, you're, You come from a fine
- 52:49Speaker 2: art world.
- 52:49Speaker 1: Like people don't know– for people who don't know, in
- 52:53Speaker 1: what way do you express yourself that way?
- 52:56Speaker 2: And is it always changing?
- 52:57Speaker 5: I don't do that that much anymore.
- 52:59Speaker 2: You're good at drawing, girl. I– thank you.
- 53:02Speaker 5: Do you want me.
- 53:03Speaker 2: To say it?
- 53:03Speaker 5: I did– I went to art school.
- 53:04Speaker 2: You've done two books. You went to art school.
- 53:06Speaker 7: I went to art school and I like– I'm– a
- 53:09Speaker 7: big like goal of mine would be to do– to
- 53:12Speaker 7: get back into painting and do– Have, like, a show.
- 53:15Speaker 5: What do you like about painting? I think I'm in
- 53:19Speaker 5: my head a lot, which I think is something that
- 53:21Speaker 5: we really bonded over.
- 53:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:25Speaker 7: And it's very meditative for me. But, like, I've painted—
- 53:29Speaker 7: two and a half paintings in the past two years.
- 53:32Speaker 1: You should say you're the painter that makes one painter
- 53:34Speaker 1: a year and then everybody comes and watches you finish it.
- 53:36Speaker 5: That's what a guy would do.
- 53:37Speaker 3: I know. That's right.
- 53:38Speaker 5: No, I'm dying to do it. Like, I think it's
- 53:40Speaker 5: just like.
- 53:41Speaker 3: He'd be like, it's like so cool that I only
- 53:43Speaker 3: do this much.
- 53:44Speaker 2: He'd be like, I only do two and a half.
- 53:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:47Speaker 2: And everyone would be like, he's a genius.
- 53:49Speaker 3: Yeah, a withholding genius.
- 53:51Speaker 5: You're right.
- 53:52Speaker 3: God, he's genius.
- 53:53Speaker 5: It takes me a whole year to do it.
- 53:55Speaker 2: Exactly. And can I ask you about Prelude?
- 53:58Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 53:58Speaker 2: Can you talk about it?
- 53:59Speaker 8: Oh, my God.
- 54:00Speaker 5: Yes, I forgot I told you all about it.
- 54:01Speaker 8: I mean, you did the thing.
- 54:02Speaker 2: I did the thing. Do you want to talk about
- 54:03Speaker 2: it a little bit?
- 54:04Speaker 5: Yeah, we're in the thick of it right now.
- 54:05Speaker 7: Okay, so Prelude is this fellowship program I created with
- 54:09Speaker 7: Mika Tennant, who's like my partner. And it's an eight-month
- 54:13Speaker 7: program where there's 10 fellows that we select. And it's early, early,
- 54:19Speaker 7: early career storytellers. And so there's 10. We set them
- 54:22Speaker 7: up with mentors. And there's ongoing programming with they have
- 54:26Speaker 7: mentorship every month. We have programming every month that I
- 54:29Speaker 7: run the programming every month. I have people come in
- 54:32Speaker 7: and talk where I ask them questions. Amy kicked it off,
- 54:36Speaker 7: which was like, they still talk about that. They still
- 54:39Speaker 7: like cannot believe that you came.
- 54:40Speaker 3: Of course.
- 54:41Speaker 7: And so I'm realizing that like for me, like the
- 54:46Speaker 7: success is that they have confidence in themselves. And that's,
- 54:51Speaker 7: that's like, that's like the best that we can Like,
- 54:53Speaker 7: that would be, like, my goal. They all leave feeling
- 54:55Speaker 7: like they have confidence and that they have– they know that, like,
- 55:00Speaker 7: someone believes in them, which, like, truly just to go
- 55:02Speaker 7: back full circle, which is, like, what you did for us.
- 55:05Speaker 5: Like, and I said this to you the other day.
- 55:07Speaker 5: I'm going to cry again.
- 55:08Speaker 7: When I had you, like, that– you believing in us
- 55:11Speaker 7: and what we were doing, like, I think is what, like,
- 55:14Speaker 7: has fueled us to do everything we've done since.
- 55:18Speaker 5: And I'm like, if I could do that for them,
- 55:21Speaker 5: that is– Yeah.
- 55:23Speaker 2: That is so cool, Abby.
- 55:25Speaker 3: So awesome.
- 55:25Speaker 1: And it really does feel kind of like crying again.
- 55:28Speaker 1: Everybody who's listening, crying again. And I just want to
- 55:32Speaker 1: ask about Good Night and Good Luck because, Alana, it's
- 55:36Speaker 1: very exciting. Like a Broadway debut is– it's such a
- 55:40Speaker 1: singular goal.
- 55:41Speaker 3: Did you have it?
- 55:42Speaker 2: Did you ever have that goal? Did you want to
- 55:45Speaker 2: be on Broadway? Like– I am accentuating the way.
- 55:51Speaker 4: A bunch of comedians.
- 55:52Speaker 3: I believe it's supposed to be Broadway. Talking about Broadway.
- 55:57Speaker 3: It wasn't really in my, like, I didn't think about
- 56:01Speaker 3: it as, especially since I had a child, it's so
- 56:03Speaker 3: time consuming. And since I've, like, kind of got my
- 56:07Speaker 3: stand-up and touring, like, now I, like, get it, how
- 56:11Speaker 3: to do it, how I do it. So Broadway, you're
- 56:15Speaker 3: so in someone else's control. I just hadn't thought about it.
- 56:18Speaker 3: It was such an incredible experience. You know, it reminds
- 56:22Speaker 3: me of Broad City. And then also, before that, the
- 56:26Speaker 3: early days of comedy, you're just seeing the same people
- 56:28Speaker 3: night after night after night. George Clooney was the co-writer
- 56:33Speaker 3: and star.
- 56:33Speaker 2: Of this performance. How is our man George?
- 56:37Speaker 3: An angel.
- 56:38Speaker 7: An angel.
- 56:39Speaker 3: He is an angel. He is my... hero he is
- 56:42Speaker 3: my hero from like the personal human being to the
- 56:46Speaker 3: public figure he is oh my gosh it was such
- 56:49Speaker 3: a such a privilege to perform his writing.
- 56:53Speaker 1: And you know ab we we we don't have to
- 56:55Speaker 1: get into it but you had a beautiful relationship in
- 56:58Speaker 1: um league of their own what was the best takeaway
- 57:01Speaker 1: of that show.
- 57:03Speaker 5: I was just talking to Darcy about it.
- 57:04Speaker 3: I know.
- 57:04Speaker 2: Great Darcy Carton.
- 57:06Speaker 3: The most kissable.
- 57:07Speaker 1: I know.
- 57:07Speaker 3: And she's so.
- 57:08Speaker 2: So it makes sense.
- 57:10Speaker 5: She is kissable. So funny.
- 57:13Speaker 8: Because I was like.
- 57:15Speaker 5: Because I kiss Paul so much on Broad City. Yeah.
- 57:17Speaker 5: And then I was like, I guess I'm going to
- 57:18Speaker 5: kiss another one of my really close friends.
- 57:21Speaker 8: Listen, we kiss our friends. But it also is like.
- 57:23Speaker 2: We kiss our friends.
- 57:23Speaker 3: I found like.
- 57:24Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 57:25Speaker 7: Like.
- 57:27Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 57:27Speaker 7: I think I'll do that forever. I'm in love with
- 57:30Speaker 7: my friends. And there's already that chemistry there.
- 57:34Speaker 3: But I.
- 57:36Speaker 7: Guess in the middle of Broad City is when I
- 57:38Speaker 7: was like, oh, wow, I think I like women, too.
- 57:42Speaker 7: Which was like, obviously, Lana was very much there for
- 57:44Speaker 7: me during that. Yes, of course.
- 57:46Speaker 5: And then I was like, like everything else, I want
- 57:48Speaker 5: to put that in the show.
- 57:49Speaker 3: Right.
- 57:50Speaker 5: And that was very much in the show with Clea.
- 57:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 57:53Speaker 7: Who, like, that was so fun, and I was so
- 57:56Speaker 7: happy that that lined up to get to have that
- 57:59Speaker 7: on Broad City, and it was, like, truly us, like,
- 58:01Speaker 7: getting to explore what was happening to me, what was
- 58:03Speaker 7: happening with Abby, and, like, differently, but the same, which
- 58:08Speaker 7: was incredible to be able to do that. And then
- 58:10Speaker 7: on League, like, I loved making that show. It was
- 58:14Speaker 7: very hard in a lot of different ways. It was
- 58:17Speaker 7: a period show. It was, like, baseball.
- 58:19Speaker 3: It was.
- 58:21Speaker 7: Inner workings of Amazon is not Comedy Central. That was–
- 58:26Speaker 7: there was a lot more money. And at the end
- 58:28Speaker 7: of the day, I was like, I'm writing this ensemble.
- 58:30Speaker 7: And everybody– like, it is just a bigger sort of, like,
- 58:33Speaker 7: friend group. And so I was like, that– like, to
- 58:36Speaker 7: expand that into, like, a group was, like, incredible. And
- 58:39Speaker 7: then to get to write this love story with Darcy was,
- 58:43Speaker 7: like– it was a dream.
- 58:45Speaker 1: People really responded to that relationship and that story.
- 58:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 58:49Speaker 7: It's been a really cool– It's kind of like on
- 58:54Speaker 7: the street kind of thing.
- 58:55Speaker 5: I'm like, I know which.
- 58:56Speaker 2: One you're going to say based on what you look like.
- 58:59Speaker 1: And having made comedy for so long, what's your relationship
- 59:03Speaker 1: to comedy now? What do you watch, read, go to? Like,
- 59:09Speaker 1: how do you make yourself laugh right now? What's making
- 59:12Speaker 1: you laugh? Who's making you laugh? Like, what's the place
- 59:16Speaker 1: when the world is getting really intense that you, like,
- 59:19Speaker 1: where do you escape?
- 59:21Speaker 5: I have a hard time.
- 59:22Speaker 3: Yeah, me too.
- 59:23Speaker 5: And so I have two things.
- 59:26Speaker 7: But I don't.
- 59:28Speaker 5: I have a hard time finding them, so I'm very interested.
- 59:31Speaker 7: Okay, so I just saw this just last week. I
- 59:34Speaker 7: saw Caperlant's new show.
- 59:36Speaker 8: Oh, wow.
- 59:37Speaker 5: At the Bell House. I mean, I haven't laughed that
- 59:41Speaker 5: much in a long time.
- 59:45Speaker 2: Oh, so live Caperlant. Recommend.
- 59:47Speaker 7: She's on tour, I think, right starting now. And then
- 59:50Speaker 7: the show I'm watching that I'm obsessed with that like
- 59:53Speaker 7: Brooke told me about.
- 59:54Speaker 3: Yeah. Brooke Posh.
- 59:55Speaker 5: Brooke Posh.
- 59:56Speaker 2: Instrumental in the early Brad City.
- 59:58Speaker 5: Big Boys. Big Boys? You've seen Big Boys?
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: No, nothing.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: Okay, hold on.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: Googling right now.
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: It's so good.
- 1:00:05Speaker 5: It's on Hulu. It's from the UK. Okay.
- 1:00:08Speaker 7: It's so– and it's like the mix of like it's
- 1:00:11Speaker 7: so funny and really heart– like there's heart.
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: It's like got me.
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: So it's a sitcom.
- 1:00:19Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: Two boys from very different ends of the spectrum of
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: masculinity become best friends at Brent University Freshers Week in
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: their first year at university. They explore, experiment, and try
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: to discover themselves.
- 1:00:31Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:00:31Speaker 5: I've never read the description. That's what it is.
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: And Alana, what are you listening to? How do you
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: check out or laugh?
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: I've been really– it's like I want to see Kate's show.
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: I really love like what my friends are making, like hacks.
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: I've been– I still have to catch up on season four,
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: but– That's been really killing me in, like, a good
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: way where I'm just like, oh, this is so good
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: and so funny.
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: I'm, like, living.
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: I'm dying. You know what I mean? And also, like,
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: the last time I laughed so hard was at O'Mary. Oh,
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: my God. I just died. I'm, like, starting to get into, like,
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: old movies, though. I just watched Prince of Tides.
- 1:01:09Speaker 5: Okay, not so much funny.
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: David, like, wants to watch all of Barbara Streisand's stuff
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: because we have, like— biographies of little, for little kid books.
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: And we're like looking at Barbara and reading her life
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: story and we're like, let's just watch the catalog. And
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: she's like, she's so stunning, dude.
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: That's a sweet man there. Her nails in Prince of Tides.
- 1:01:30Speaker 5: She directed that.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: She directed it.
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: And Nick Nolte.
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: Like the gorgeous. And to see, first of all, she's
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: so hot and beautiful. And I'm like looking up in
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: Wikipedia and doing the math. She's like 53 in it.
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: And she directed herself and is like, yeah, I'm fucking
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: gorgeous and so Jewish.
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: Would she say like Prince of Toids?
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: Would it be Toids? Toids. She would.
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: It's just like, get it, bitch.
- 1:02:00Speaker 9: Get it.
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: Fucking get it. No kidding.
- 1:02:02Speaker 5: She has a bio that just came out.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: Autobiography. And you should hear her do.
- 1:02:08Speaker 5: The— The book I heard was incredible. The audio book. Yeah.
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: She's incredible. Barbara— We know you're watching and listening. Barbara,
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: please come.
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: Please. Dude, that would be such a good guest.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: When Tina and I did the movie Sisters, her husband,
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: James Brolin, played our dad. And my parents visited the
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: set one day, and my mom was like, I wonder
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: if Barbara Streisand's ever going to come. And I was like, Mom,
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: Barbara's not going to come visit. You know, on Long Island,
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: the set of Sisters, her husband is an actor.
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: And she did.
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: And it was the day my mother was there.
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: Yes, dude.
- 1:02:42Speaker 7: Wow.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: She came to visit.
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: You know, just came to drop by to see her gorgeous,
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: loving husband, James. And my mom was like, I told you.
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: And I was like, this doesn't happen all the time.
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: Don't get used to this.
- 1:02:53Speaker 5: Did they have a moment?
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: They did.
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: I mean, they had like a little hello. She was lovely.
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: And very lovely to us. And you're right.
- 1:03:01Speaker 5: We don't talk.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: Barbara, when you come on, let's talk about the things
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: you've directed. I want to talk to you just as
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: a director.
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: Like, truly. It was so cool. And, you know, learning, like,
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: how to light yourself as a woman in your 40s
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: and your 50s and your 60s. Just be, like, just, like,
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: make it soft. Just, like, feel. She is, like.
- 1:03:20Speaker 8: Irresistible.
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: We were just like, she is so hot.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: I had a Broad City moment the other day that
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: felt very Broad City, speaking of lighting yourself as I
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: was shooting something. And I was looking at the monitor
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: and I said, can I just take a peek to
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: see where you are at with lighting? And the young
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: director of the piece said, oh, don't worry, you look great.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: And I was like, can I give you a little feedback?
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: I think when women, especially my age, ask for the monitor,
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: saying don't worry, you look great is not helpful. Like
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: it's not, it's not like we're being vain or insecure
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: or like, we're just like trying to tweak just what
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: like we would our voice or performance. Like we kind of,
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: we have a sense of like how we're going to
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: feel comfortable and how we want to come across.
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: Like lighting is a big deal. I don't think he.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: Understands, this person understands. I think he's actually trying to
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: make me feel better.
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: I totally get it, but it's just like, LOL, bro. LOL, bro.
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: I mean, OMG, LOL, bro. And then a little.
- 1:04:27Speaker 5: Did you get to see? Huh? Did you get to see?
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: Of course. Of course.
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: All you do is you go like this.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: I mean, it's always... And this is very Broad City.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: It's always like how much in the moment do you
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: want to like correct? And how much do you want
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: to just like.
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: You know, it is.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: I mean, I think what we're talking about today is
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: the reason why people love the show is they feel
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: like there's like people looking out for each other, sticking
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: up for each other, taking care of each other. There's
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: a community in the show. There's like a vibe. And
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: then what that does, it allows you to do that
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: for yourself. And then you become your own advocate for yourself.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: That's what the characters did.
- 1:05:04Speaker 5: I had a Broad City moment on Saturday, too.
- 1:05:06Speaker 7: I don't know if it has a big culmination like this,
- 1:05:08Speaker 7: but I went to a premiere and I went alone.
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:05:12Speaker 5: Which is wild. And then I went to the party after.
- 1:05:15Speaker 5: And I was like, I'm going to schmooze. And I
- 1:05:19Speaker 5: knew someone. And I was like, okay, we're eating.
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: We get a bite.
- 1:05:23Speaker 7: And then we're going up to the bar. I was like,
- 1:05:25Speaker 7: let's get a drink. And we go up to get
- 1:05:27Speaker 7: a drink. And they were like, you know what? I
- 1:05:32Speaker 7: don't want to hold the martini. I have to pee.
- 1:05:35Speaker 7: I'm going to go pee.
- 1:05:35Speaker 5: And I was like, all right, well, what do you want?
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: I'll get it.
- 1:05:38Speaker 7: And I get the drink. And I was like, oh,
- 1:05:40Speaker 7: look at me at this premiere. I get the two
- 1:05:43Speaker 7: martinis and then they never came back. And so I
- 1:05:50Speaker 7: truly was like, I was like standing with two dirty
- 1:05:54Speaker 7: martinis and I was like, and.
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: I was like looking like a true drunk.
- 1:05:58Speaker 7: People would come up to me and then I told
- 1:06:01Speaker 7: Jodi later, I was like, oh God, like people will
- 1:06:03Speaker 7: come up to me that I knew and then people
- 1:06:04Speaker 7: come up to me that love Broad City.
- 1:06:06Speaker 5: Me holding the two martinis and I was like, I'm
- 1:06:09Speaker 5: fucking Abby.
- 1:06:10Speaker 7: I'm a fucking Abby. And I was wearing a thing
- 1:06:12Speaker 7: where like I kind of had to keep adjusting it.
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: Finally, I was like, this one looks better. And I
- 1:06:18Speaker 5: was like, started drinking. I was like, I abandoned.
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: How many minutes would you say that you were double
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: fisting martinis?
- 1:06:24Speaker 5: I would say too many.
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: Any number?
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: I would probably say 20.
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: Yo! Yeah. Well, I was.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: Like, she's going to come back here.
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: And then I was like, this is a good martini.
- 1:06:38Speaker 5: They made it.
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: Like, they made it.
- 1:06:39Speaker 8: I didn't pay for it, but I was like.
- 1:06:41Speaker 5: That's very Abby.
- 1:06:42Speaker 4: They made it.
- 1:06:43Speaker 5: It's a nice martini. I'm going to waste a martini.
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: Then they're watching me and I don't want them to
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: think that.
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: I'm not drinking it.
- 1:06:47Speaker 5: And then I was like, I abandoned it. And then
- 1:06:50Speaker 5: I was like, I'm leaving.
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: In the spirit of, like, self-improvement, if it was 20
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: this time, how many minutes will you give it next time?
- 1:06:56Speaker 7: You know, there's no world in which I'm getting the
- 1:06:59Speaker 7: drink when someone goes to the bathroom next time.
- 1:07:01Speaker 5: I think I'd be like— That's a good correction. I'll
- 1:07:03Speaker 5: see you when you get back. I'm going to get
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: myself a drink.
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: And Alana, have you had an Alana moment recently? Is
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: there something that happens where you're like, oh, this is
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: an Alana moment?
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: I have one that I can't say that I'll tell
- 1:07:13Speaker 3: you after. Oh, you can't.
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: Oh, I want to know it. It's naughty. Yeah, it's
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: really naughty. Alana, tell us.
- 1:07:19Speaker 5: Have you had an Abby moment?
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: Us filling it in might be more fun. Kind of
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: like what you were talking about with your show. Like
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: us filling in what your Alana moment is.
- 1:07:27Speaker 7: Dot, dot, dot.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: Dot, dot, dot, babe.
- 1:07:29Speaker 3: Yeah, let's leave it at that.
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: Okay, dot, dot, dot.
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: But I'll tell you after.
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: Okay, well, dot, dot, dot it is. I love you too.
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: Thank you so much for doing this.
- 1:07:36Speaker 5: We love you, Amy.
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: I love talking about the show.
