Transcript
- 0:31Hello, welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast episode 30,
- 0:35joined as always by Owen Smith and the Menzies.
- 0:39Now it's actually taken us, not that you guys listening would
- 0:42know. It's taken us a while to get
- 0:44started here, seeing as my time zone conversions weren't quite
- 0:47up to point this week and we've been flustering around for the
- 0:51past hour or so. But we're here now and we're
- 0:54ready to rock'n'roll. So welcome, Owen.
- 0:57How are you doing Sunday morning?
- 0:59Sunday morning. I'm going to go with my long run
- 1:02now in a little bit. But yeah, it's the struggles of
- 1:05running a podcast when we're over the other side of the well,
- 1:09we're all stretched across the world.
- 1:11But no, I'm good. Yeah.
- 1:13And then because you're not getting online and all waking up
- 1:16until like 7 and I'm and still seeing seeing all the results
- 1:19that have happened overnight for you and obviously me and Dean
- 1:21have been sat there watching it. You're like what?
- 1:23Who's out? What's happened?
- 1:25Yeah. So it's good for one of the
- 1:27sessions is really good in Ireland and then the other one
- 1:31is it's like out like half 11, it starts out.
- 1:34So like, I'm not going to stay up for that one.
- 1:37Yeah, fair enough. And welcome also to Dean.
- 1:40How are you doing Sunday afternoon?
- 1:43Command doing well, yeah, excited to be on and been able
- 1:50to. I think I'm like, oh, we're sort
- 1:52of and unusual for for us in Perth, we've been pretty lucky
- 1:56in terms of time zone. So what Tokyo is an hour
- 1:59different to Perth, so the session times work in really
- 2:03well, which has been nice. So yeah, tuned into a couple of
- 2:07good sessions of athletics so far.
- 2:10Yeah, I can't work out because I think in my head when I look at
- 2:14the map, Tokyo, at least in my head, is like east of us in
- 2:21Australia, but they're an hour ahead.
- 2:25But maybe like when you actually look at the map, they're not E.
- 2:27That's just all in my head. But I don't know if we want to
- 2:33leave this in, but it isn't Melbourne.
- 2:35Sort of like Melbourne's east of us and they're two hours, 3
- 2:38hours ahead of us. Oh yeah, I got that wrong.
- 2:40I meant West in my head. Tokyo, Japan and Asia is all
- 2:45West of Australia. Sure, sure, sure.
- 2:49The world's not flat, Ryan. It's curved.
- 2:53I don't start all this, but we've just been chatting offline
- 3:00as well about how the competition, the medal
- 3:03competition is kicked off and how many points we've gotten
- 3:05stuff because obviously we've got the first couple of sets of
- 3:08results coming through. So thanks to everyone who
- 3:11entered the competition and who took the time to fill the form
- 3:15out on messages and get involved and even give us some feedback.
- 3:19So kind of looking forward to seeing how that progresses as
- 3:22the competition goes. But did you see that?
- 3:26Well, Ted G, the Ethiopian, I can't remember which race she
- 3:30was listed for now, but she was obviously came under the
- 3:35limelight with the drugs ban and stuff just ahead of it.
- 3:38And I think that's kind of messed with a couple of people's
- 3:41picks, myself included. I think I had the down for a
- 3:44silver medal. I can confirm I've got the
- 3:48spreadsheet up and yeah, eight people I think of a similar, you
- 3:53know, in a similar boat to yourself.
- 3:54So yeah, quite unfortunate there, but there's been a few
- 3:58casualties in across the board so far.
- 4:01So neither of you guys had Welsh had G, no.
- 4:04I don't think so. Nah, dodged that bullet.
- 4:07But that one, that one really hit a nerve where where Ireland
- 4:12because it was highlighted in the clubhouse that and well Teji
- 4:16came second in the World Championships in Budapest 1500
- 4:21and Karen Mcgegan from Ireland came 4th.
- 4:24So let's be real, if she's doping now, she's doping back
- 4:28then as well, which means she wouldn't have came second Kim
- 4:33McGee and would have got a bronze medal in the World
- 4:35Championship for Ireland, which does not come around very often.
- 4:39And now Kim Mcgeegan, she's unfortunately come down with
- 4:44cancer. So that's what she's on the
- 4:46scene this year. And so, yeah, it's it's just
- 4:52terrible. Let's be real.
- 4:53Like, I know it's unfortunate that she's sick now.
- 4:57Like she she could have a world bronze medal.
- 5:00And yeah, it's just, it's really, really not fair.
- 5:03Yeah. And again, that's a prime
- 5:04example, a close to home example of kind of like what we've been
- 5:07talking about the past few months with all these cases that
- 5:10crop up, isn't it? I didn't quite look into it
- 5:13enough for the know if you guys know the details.
- 5:15But why this was kind of going on so late with, well, Ted June?
- 5:20Like why it was an argument between like the CAS, the core
- 5:25operation sport and like the wider world anti dopant agency.
- 5:30Like you're kind of one of them was pushing for it to be tested
- 5:33again and the other one was saying she didn't need to and
- 5:36then she eventually done the test to think and has been found
- 5:40to test positive. So I don't, yeah, I don't really
- 5:42understand what was going on there, but at least she's out.
- 5:45Yeah, she should be out for fucking life.
- 5:47Because they've saved face, I guess.
- 5:49If imagine she had the competed, she had the medal and then in
- 5:52the test and afterwards she would have been guilty anyway
- 5:55and that just wouldn't have been a good luck with it.
- 5:59I wouldn't be surprised, but no, it wouldn't be.
- 6:01Good luck. It brings me on to actually, did
- 6:03you see that's the best Sebastian saw away the guy who's
- 6:06won Valencia and another one recently, he's started as
- 6:10proactive drugs, drug test and ahead of is it Berlin, he's in
- 6:14line 4. Yeah, having a crack at the
- 6:17world record. Yeah, like fair play to him for
- 6:21going out of there and doing that.
- 6:23But at the same time, you're like, athlete shouldn't have to
- 6:27do that, but you can obviously see where he's coming from.
- 6:30And kind of this is almost like what we've been crying for,
- 6:33being proactive about it. And obviously he's from Kenya,
- 6:36so he knows all of the doubt and stuff that surrounds him and
- 6:40he's going to have a crack at the world record.
- 6:42He wants to make sure it's entirely clean and there's no
- 6:45questions asked. So fair play to him.
- 6:48What has he run 202? 202, yeah.
- 6:52Which is crazy, but it's believable if you get me.
- 6:56Like, it's not like the woman's one was two or nine.
- 6:59That just wasn't believable. So yeah, at least 25 anti doping
- 7:05controls in the two months before the Berlin Marathon.
- 7:08Tests include unannounced out of competition controls using the
- 7:11most advanced lab post calls, all testing managed
- 7:15independently by the AIU. So and his team have no
- 7:18knowledge of test timing or methods.
- 7:20And he says I'm tired of reading what people write in the press
- 7:24and on social media. There's always doubt or an
- 7:26accusation when the athlete is a Kenyan.
- 7:28I think he's speaking directly to your own.
- 7:33I do, however, recognize that doping is a huge problem in our
- 7:36country. We cannot deny this or avoid the
- 7:38topic. At least he's taken ownership of
- 7:40it as well. To do so would be a mistake and
- 7:43we must accept that it is a fact.
- 7:45To fight the current state of doping, we must shed light on it
- 7:48and the issues surrounding it and work with the sports
- 7:50authorities like the AIU and Wai feel like we must all combat
- 7:55what this has become like a cancer for Kenyan athletes.
- 7:58And by taking this step, I hope that I can not only serve as as
- 8:02an example for other athletes but the people will truly try to
- 8:06address the issue and try to find lasting solutions.
- 8:09But first I want to prove that I am clean when I set forth at the
- 8:12start line and whatever result comes from my efforts, it is not
- 8:15dragged through the mud because I am Kenyan like that guy is
- 8:19sick. Yeah, but we're kidding
- 8:21ourselves if we think it's just Kenya.
- 8:23Like America is 100% rotten as well.
- 8:25They're just better at hiding it.
- 8:26And they're more sophisticated. Like you see your one Eric
- 8:29Knight and he got done there and his coach also coached.
- 8:34And your man Gatland, who also coaches Noah Lyles.
- 8:38Like I would not be surprised if more like, yeah, I think people
- 8:44are just other countries just better hiding it.
- 8:45Again that night night and one's interesting because there was
- 8:48conflict between two bodies and he actually they managed to get
- 8:52overturned initially through proven, they actually proved
- 8:57that there was traces of it in the meat that he ate.
- 8:59It was another kind of like burrito like example.
- 9:04And they went and they went and tested the meat and found that
- 9:08there was like cross contamination, like very minor
- 9:12amounts in it. But in the end it hasn't stood
- 9:15up. But I don't know, I wouldn't be
- 9:16surprised if that's not the end of this one.
- 9:18But hey, we've got best things to talk about than anti dopant
- 9:23and positive false drug tests. The Tokyo World Athletics
- 9:27Championships have started on Saturday morning in Tokyo.
- 9:36So in terms of the episode structure, largely we're going
- 9:39to chat around what's happened so far in Tokyo, which has been
- 9:41a women's 10K final, the women's marathon and the 1500 heats for
- 9:47both the men and women. Largely they're the races that
- 9:51we're concerned about that have happened.
- 9:54Copenhagen half is actually happening right now.
- 9:57So whether or not we'll get to the end of that with the
- 9:59results, we'll we shall see. But I know Great Britain's Phil
- 10:03Sussman, who I'm sure would have loved to been running at Tokyo,
- 10:06is running there. From other news items, we've got
- 10:10Kipchergi and Hassan A rolling into the next marathon on the
- 10:14back of Sydney and doing New York.
- 10:17There's an interesting addition to the Chicago Marathon field
- 10:22and we shall see how far we get down the line with YouTube
- 10:25Diaries. Hopefully we can fit that in.
- 10:29So let's start where it all started then, with the women's
- 10:3310,000 meter final. I think I looked, I thought to
- 10:38Google the temperature in Tokyo as I was watching it, and it was
- 10:41like 28°, even though it was maybe half eight at night or
- 10:46something. And it's just grim conditions,
- 10:50isn't it? Your magic paragraph is doing
- 10:52everything he can to not be in Tokyo.
- 10:54So like that sort of tells you like how bad it must be to train
- 10:57there. Yeah.
- 11:00I had a look you like this morning with the women's
- 11:03marathon because, you know, sometimes it can be hot but dry,
- 11:07like a dry heat, which is often what we get here, particularly
- 11:10when it's warm in Perth. But I think the humidity was
- 11:13pretty high as well. Like it was at least this
- 11:16morning, I think the dew point was like 26 and in the first
- 11:20within the first hour of the women's marathon, which was
- 11:22first thing in the morning. So like that's yeah, that's like
- 11:2785 plus percent humidity on top of it being hot is like that's
- 11:31pretty oppressive running with her.
- 11:32Scene Actually, I noticed that Izzy Bath Doyle took a water.
- 11:37I can't remember what point it was.
- 11:39And before, not many athletes. Yeah, there wasn't many of them,
- 11:42though. I was surprised.
- 11:43Like if if Izzy's thought to do it, it's obviously a good idea.
- 11:47And she didn't, like, get detached when she'd done it or
- 11:49anything. But she'd be good at that from
- 11:50the marathon. I'd say none of them.
- 11:52Other people have run a marathon, so she might be more
- 11:55used to it. Did your footage cut away when
- 11:59the race broke up in the 10K? Yeah.
- 12:02And then it came back and they'd made the move.
- 12:04Yeah, Is that not just like the typical like you can feel it
- 12:08starting to build like everyone's sussing each other
- 12:11out and then the actual part where it's quite interesting to
- 12:15see unfold with adverts or throws he.
- 12:20He was even saying it himself, wasn't he?
- 12:21Was like, oh, this is brewing nicely like the four of these
- 12:24five of these at the front like something's going to happen
- 12:27soon. Oh well, let's just quick
- 12:30quickly cut to an ad there and we'll join you when we get back.
- 12:32And then when they come back this fields been separated.
- 12:36There's 5 remaining. Yeah, awesome.
- 12:38Well, what it meant for the results in the end, and then we
- 12:40can talk about how the race unfolded.
- 12:42The guest was that Beatrice Chibet, who, as I think most of
- 12:46the participants in the competition identified, was
- 12:49rightly the favorite, and she won in 30 minutes and 37 seconds
- 12:55from it. So she's Kenyan, if we didn't
- 12:58already know. She won from Italy's Nadia
- 13:02Bataclasi, who was second in a time of 30 minutes and 38
- 13:06seconds and amazingly managed to run a national record in those
- 13:10conditions that we've just said were far from optimal.
- 13:13And then third was good after Guy of Ethiopia in 30 minutes 39
- 13:17seconds. There was two people in the
- 13:21clubhouse that got that exact order.
- 13:23The what's? It called the Tri cast or
- 13:25something. Yeah, trifecta if it was a in in
- 13:30a racehorse. But yeah, Liam Stocky and Dan
- 13:35Wayne with a the off tour off to a flyer.
- 13:40Chibat looks so smooth when she runs, doesn't she?
- 13:43Like when she kicked? Yeah, she's such a good athlete.
- 13:46I know obviously as distance runners they're all like pretty
- 13:49lean, but did you, did anyone like take note of her face?
- 13:53I thought it looked particularly gaunt, like quite skeletal
- 13:56almost. Yeah, she's tiny, but yes.
- 14:00Yeah. Unbatted, cloudy like that.
- 14:03Yeah, So I think maybe Battle Classy getting second is not an
- 14:07upset, but you would have thought maybe Sig I would and
- 14:09Chibet would have been 1-2 and just unsure which way around.
- 14:13But Battle Classy was silver medal in the 10,000 meters in
- 14:16the Paris Olympic Games recently, wasn't she?
- 14:18So she's clearly a cut above most of the other European
- 14:22athletes. And when you look down at the
- 14:24results, you don't find the European, well, you actually
- 14:28come to Lauren Ryan as like kind of the first non African or
- 14:32Asian competitor. So she's finished 9th and 3127.
- 14:37Then we get into the GB athletes of Megan Keefe in 103133, Callie
- 14:43Hoga Thackery in 113137 and Izzy but Doyle finished in 18th in No
- 14:5217th sorry in 3153. That's a phenomenal room for
- 14:57Megan Keith. If you see in her in the
- 15:00Olympics, she got locked like twice in Paris.
- 15:04So for her to come 10th in the world's, yeah, it's a massive,
- 15:08massive result for her. She's actually Scottish I think
- 15:10as well, isn't she? Yeah.
- 15:13I know this is a separate subject but it kind of rattles
- 15:16me the way GB bundle all the home nations athletes into one
- 15:21seemingly when it suits the the English.
- 15:25We like to claim the Scots when it suits us.
- 15:27She's tried to claim the whole world.
- 15:29Nearly. But like if you ask, if you ask
- 15:35these people, Scots particularly, I know lots of
- 15:38nations are patient offset, but Scots like clearly see
- 15:41themselves as well. They don't because they have the
- 15:44referendum a voted no. 4048% of them I think.
- 15:52But you know, I mean, like these athletes would be proudly
- 15:55Scottish, but then they fall under the GB banner and often it
- 15:59kind of gets lost whether they're English, Welsh,
- 16:02Scottish. But anyway, kind of besides the
- 16:06point. I'm just trying to make the
- 16:08point that lots of the GB athletes are actually Scots.
- 16:12Like White Men Care, Mccolgan, but to name a few.
- 16:17There's, there's plenty of Scots in there.
- 16:18I think even the Aaron Wallace, the 1500m runner, I'd never
- 16:22heard her speak until the other day and she, I think it was I
- 16:25had the broad Scottish accent as well.
- 16:27So then they're doing something right up in Scotland.
- 16:30Wales is just forgotten off there and isn't it?
- 16:32Even I find that in Australia, you know, you don't.
- 16:35I've often said to people like you don't meet many Welsh people
- 16:40because they'll just kind of stay in their own little home
- 16:43comforts I think. And farm sheep.
- 16:46Yeah, they're very good at. Did you see Izzy back Doyle's
- 16:49interview with them? Straight up asset?
- 16:51I think she she came across very well and made a good point in
- 16:55that because obviously she could have run the marathon all this
- 16:59and I hadn't thought of it this way, but she was like in Paris,
- 17:02I didn't get to run in the final.
- 17:04So this is obviously an opportunity to run a final
- 17:07inside the sold out stadium and just kind of experience that for
- 17:11what it is, a gas. So yeah, she spoke really well.
- 17:1780,000 people I think, she said. Atmosphere was really good and
- 17:21top 20 in the world, like ranks, what, 25th going into it?
- 17:27Yeah, pretty cool. And then I think turns 30 today.
- 17:30So happy birthday. Does she plays better in the
- 17:32marathon? Like does she get a better
- 17:34result in the marathon? I think she has the potential
- 17:36to, well, I mean, it's so hard, right?
- 17:39But like, the way that race played out today, like there was
- 17:43some pretty strong performances for women that, I don't know,
- 17:47maybe arguably you say she can. She'd be she'd chant herself
- 17:52against as well, I think. Yeah.
- 17:53That's what I was thinking. I think she would have like
- 17:55performed better in the marathon but still like top 20 in the
- 17:59world is incredible. Yeah, I think you, you take out
- 18:02maybe the top two in the women's marathon and it feels open,
- 18:09right? Like a more open than what you'd
- 18:12you'd think in terms of, yeah. So like some of these track
- 18:15events? Do they?
- 18:17So these don't get paid for winning this, do they?
- 18:19Or did they get a little bit of money?
- 18:21No, they they get a decent amount of money.
- 18:23We can check how much it is. But yeah, there is a decent
- 18:27prize purse for winning a medal at World Champs for sure.
- 18:33There's just no appearance fee. So if you do a world major,
- 18:36you'd probably get an appearance fee on top of like a prize
- 18:39money. Yeah, and I heard this spoke
- 18:42about a bit just around how people, particularly
- 18:45marathoners, how they weigh up choosing between, you know, a
- 18:48world major and, and this and some of the comments were around
- 18:53the your contract. You you you'll write into your
- 18:56shoe contract a bonus for where you place in major competition.
- 19:02So depending on how you stack your contract, you might be more
- 19:07or less motivated to want to race at the World Champs.
- 19:10For if you win it, you get 70 thousand U.S. dollars.
- 19:13If you come second, you get 35, third, 22 fourth, sixteen, 5th,
- 19:2011 sixth you get 7000. Seventh you get 6008, you get
- 19:255000. So it pays down to top 8.
- 19:28So Lauren Ryan just missed out. I guess it's more so around your
- 19:32your legacy and your CV almost isn't it like making this sort
- 19:36of decision. And also if you think of
- 19:38Valencia later in the year is he's maybe thinking, well, I can
- 19:42run the 10K in World champs and then have a go potentially at
- 19:47the national record in Valencia. Whereas if she had around the
- 19:49marathon here, she probably doesn't back that up in
- 19:52Valencia. And then maybe she then it's
- 19:56like, what do you way off more being a national record holder
- 20:00versus like finishing top whatever in the world champs.
- 20:04Like these are all the decisions that kind of probably go under
- 20:08the radar in terms of from us. Like when we're just looking at
- 20:11results, unless you zoom out and think, try and put your
- 20:15athlete's hat on, they're thinking about all these things.
- 20:18And what gets you in shape to have a crack in Australian
- 20:21record is probably getting faster too.
- 20:24You sort of do that. European summer sets you up.
- 20:26And if you break the world record, you get $100,000.
- 20:30So what Mondo cash in again? As part of from like that World
- 20:35Athletics, from the world champs, you get paid that.
- 20:38Yeah, yeah. So one point I wanted to make
- 20:42while speaking about this women's marathon as well was
- 20:45imagine how the men are feeling sat there watching it, thinking
- 20:47about like, because they probably have a lot of unknowns
- 20:51going into watching this women's race.
- 20:53And then seeing how it plays out, what sort of times they
- 20:56run, how many people like completely blow up and fade and
- 21:00kind of like where people can kick down from and stuff.
- 21:03They're probably making like a large part of their race plan
- 21:06based on this, aren't they? Yeah, you'd definitely be
- 21:09talking with your fellow athletes, wouldn't you, from if
- 21:13you've got people from your country already doing it to try
- 21:15and get some feedback. But yeah, it looked, it looked
- 21:18very tough in terms of the marathon sort of mentioned
- 21:21before, the weather looked particularly tough.
- 21:24But yeah, did we want to step through the results and how it
- 21:27played out for the women's? Marathon.
- 21:28Yeah, go on, I'll rattle the results off and then you can
- 21:31tell me how you've seen it unfold.
- 21:33So Perez chapter chair the Kenyan athlete who was one of
- 21:36the favourites. One in two, 2443 from Sixed
- 21:40Asafa, the Ethiopian athlete in 2/24/45.
- 21:44Very close, just two seconds separating them.
- 21:47And then the shock Uruguayan snuck in for the bronze.
- 21:51Well, she didn't sneak in, she rightly run an incredible race
- 21:56and got the bronze medal in two hours, 2723 seconds.
- 22:01So I know we're kind of texting a little bit whilst this was
- 22:04going on. So how did you see it there?
- 22:06Yes, I think it was. I think in terms of the top few,
- 22:10it's sort of like played out as you would have thought.
- 22:13So like the top 2. I think a lot of people had as
- 22:18like tagged as the most likely to come top 2, right.
- 22:23Maybe not in that order though. And maybe unfairly, like, I
- 22:29guess, yeah, starting at the start, it was all in a big group
- 22:32or there's a lot of people in a group through 5K in around that
- 22:3517 minutes. And then the American athletes
- 22:39sort of took initiative and sort of went off the front.
- 22:43And I thought that was pretty risky.
- 22:45Like, if it's moderately hot, no problem.
- 22:47But if it's very hot like it was, I was like, you can pay.
- 22:49You can literally get the staggers if you overheat.
- 22:52And I've seen it happen when Callum Hawkins got the staggers
- 22:58in the marathon in the con games in 2018.
- 23:01Side Story, but it cost you a few dollars that one didn't it?
- 23:04Yeah, I so so he was, I don't know why, but the bookies were
- 23:11disrespecting. He'd literally come off the back
- 23:14of being 4th at the 2017 London World Champs and had come over
- 23:20to Perth with his dad a month before the Comm games and
- 23:24trained specifically for this race and was in very good shape
- 23:27by all reports. But we're somehow paying 15 to 1
- 23:30and I thought that was silly for the bookies to offer that.
- 23:35So I may have got, I got emotionally attached and
- 23:39financially attached to his outcome there.
- 23:42And yeah, he was in a gutter at 40K for anyone that didn't see
- 23:45it. So, so was I.
- 23:48Have to be in a couple of minutes off the front and about
- 23:51to stroll to. Victory yeah, I should have
- 23:53mentioned yeah, that's right. He he ran away from everyone at
- 23:55halfway. They literally crossed halfway
- 23:57that day and he took off and was yeah, literally minutes up the
- 24:01road before not finishing. So when I saw the American
- 24:05athletes going off the front, I was, and you could see that
- 24:09Sullivan was sort of shaking her arms after a few KS or maybe 5
- 24:15or 6 KS off the front, I'm like, Oh no, is she going to start to
- 24:18suffer from hate stress and Doha world champs?
- 24:21I remember watching those and a lot of people that's just
- 24:23carnage, particularly those that went out hard.
- 24:25So yeah, anyway, she didn't she she judged her effort really
- 24:29well. It just so happened that that
- 24:31lead pack of largely E Africans, but also the Uruguay athlete,
- 24:35they sort of when they decided to make a move and it and it was
- 24:40the likes of Sagai and no wait, sorry, Sefa and Chip Choocha
- 24:47that made that move. They just they just went past
- 24:49her. They were just too good.
- 24:51But yeah, I just thought, yeah, they judged it really well.
- 24:55It was a really good, exciting finish and she held on really
- 24:58well for 4th. Was sick as the finish inside
- 25:00stadium in like typical Japanese fashion I think, isn't it?
- 25:03But it's so good. I think that's how all that so
- 25:07many races should finish like that, like, yeah, it's Gen.
- 25:10I think it's perfect. And like they had started the
- 25:13the morning athletics was due to start as well.
- 25:15So people were already going to be flocking in.
- 25:17So I thought it was like, yeah, really cool way to finish.
- 25:20Sometimes with the morning sessions, maybe the the best
- 25:26kind of like finals and stuff, they're not placed in the
- 25:29morning session, are they? So if you're a spectator and
- 25:31you're going in there and you get to see the marathon finish
- 25:34like RIP around 300 meters of the track right in Frontier and
- 25:38especially with how this one played out like Jeff cheer chair
- 25:41and a safer what they've kind of separated themselves by this
- 25:44point, hadn't they? And they were kind of brewing up
- 25:47as they approach the final K and coming into the stadium and even
- 25:52the commentator was like, what's going on?
- 25:54Like the one of them is looking at her watch and there's like
- 25:57almost less than AK left. Like what are they doing?
- 26:01And I think one of them even took a drink at like that point.
- 26:04And it's like, oh, you literally got about 3 minutes to survive.
- 26:08Like just focus on the actual race at hand.
- 26:11And then as the end to the stadium, it's kind of it's bit
- 26:14of a deep, steep descent it looked like, didn't it down that
- 26:17ramp. I was thinking, oh geez, like
- 26:20someone's likes could go here. And then Jeff sheer chair kept
- 26:25cutting across. I noticed twice she cut across
- 26:28the staffers like racing line. So she got the the best line if
- 26:34you like, and then a safer kind of made the move down the 200
- 26:39and 5200 back straight. But she didn't like completely
- 26:43drop her, which is often what you see in these marathons when
- 26:46someone makes a move, particularly so late on, it's a
- 26:49decisive 1. And the other person, because
- 26:51they're that tired, it's the last K of a marathon.
- 26:54They just know they can't do anything about it.
- 26:56But Jeff Churchill attached herself to her.
- 27:00And then coming off that final 100 meters, she's pulling all
- 27:04sorts of faces as she accelerates away.
- 27:07But yeah, she she went to another level there and a
- 27:10surgical finish, Yeah. She's got a bit of a track
- 27:14record as well of like winning major, like winning major races
- 27:18as well when I could see it finishing up like, oh, she's not
- 27:21going to lose. To which I was a bit upset about
- 27:24because I think you were, we were a lot of people tipped, had
- 27:30tipped it the other way around. Like I think a Sefa and a Sefa
- 27:35was 2nd to Sifan Hassan, Wasn't she in Paris?
- 27:41So I think everyone was thinking this would be her time.
- 27:44But and you could see she was almost a little bit disappointed
- 27:47when she finished, you know, to finish second again.
- 27:52But I felt like, yeah, chit chit, chit just didn't want to
- 27:55lose. She was, she's so smooth as well
- 27:57as I felt like she looked. She looked comfortable whenever
- 28:00the camera cut to them, didn't she?
- 28:01But obviously Jeff Shearshire was equally as comfortable.
- 28:05Safa didn't. Wasn't she the 800m runner?
- 28:08She's 211 Marathon PB, Yeah. You tell me, Sir.
- 28:12Yeah, I think so. I think she's former world
- 28:14record holder, right? Yeah, I was thinking that.
- 28:16So I thought she would have. Yeah, I thought she would have
- 28:19pushed on. I mean, she was my pick like.
- 28:21She was. She was most to be, to be
- 28:23honest. Shout out to Fenella McCormick
- 28:27who came ninth in 230 representing Ireland which is a
- 28:33phenomenal result. Top ten in a World
- 28:35Championships. It's pretty incredible.
- 28:37Not bronze that you'd picked, but not but a pretty good
- 28:41effort. Well, look who came bronze like
- 28:43it was opened. It could have been.
- 28:46If it was in Ireland, she could have came third.
- 28:49I did notice that, you know, as as like the, they're all
- 28:51crossing the line. It wasn't the usual flurry of
- 28:54like East Africans, you've got a Finnish lady and 5th of the two
- 28:58Americans are in the top ten, the Japanese, the Irish.
- 29:02Like it's good to see it followed out like that.
- 29:05And the thing with that, you're crying girl, we finished that.
- 29:09Did you see? Like she almost didn't know she
- 29:11was there even for like 5 seconds after she finished and
- 29:15she's like holding three fingers of one of the officials.
- 29:18Like you sure, like really. And the commentator explained, I
- 29:23mean, I happily admit I've never had this woman prior to today.
- 29:27He said that up until January of this year, she was representing
- 29:31GB. She was born in Mexico, moved to
- 29:34Cambridge when she was however old she was.
- 29:37And up until literally 2025, she was like under the GB
- 29:42federation. And you know, on the back of
- 29:45like everything we spoke about the other week regarding like
- 29:47the GB quota and points and all this, had she have chose to
- 29:53represent GB, she wouldn't have even been chosen, selected to go
- 29:57to the world champs and she's just got a bronze medal.
- 29:59That says volumes about how poor JB selection policy is.
- 30:03Yeah, if if ever there was like a justification to come around
- 30:07and kind of like back off that whole storyline, this just kind
- 30:11of shoves it right in the face, doesn't it?
- 30:13And whether or not her decision to move and represent Uruguay,
- 30:17because apparently her like immediate family has in her
- 30:20parents, they're like proper Uruguay and they live over there
- 30:24and stuff. It's not like one of these
- 30:26things you see in football where players leave Ireland and choose
- 30:30to represent England and stuff. It's legit.
- 30:34But whether or not her decision is because she knew she wouldn't
- 30:38get a look in if she was representing GB.
- 30:40But it's like a big middle finger to them anyway, so
- 30:44hopefully that makes them reconsider.
- 30:46Is that so Irish folks get to lose a semi final in a World
- 30:50Cup? Is that what they're?
- 30:53Career The World Cup we're after losing our mania or someone
- 30:57there during the week 21, The World Cup is not on our radar.
- 31:02No, I mean that's why they defect to England only to sort
- 31:05of bow out in the quarterfinals or something.
- 31:07Anyway, I sort of confused as to why.
- 31:09Yeah, the glory hunters. And then they're not getting
- 31:12much glory either, to be fair. But Australia can win these tiny
- 31:18little Asian Cups. Can't understand like that's a
- 31:21success I guess. In their own little world.
- 31:26It's a geographical proximity or non proximity to most of the
- 31:32football world that allows us to get into the into the finals to
- 31:37begin. With as long as you're better
- 31:38than New Zealand. Yeah, pretty much.
- 31:40That's awesome, Masters. But yeah, shout out to the rest
- 31:42of the Australian ladies there who finished.
- 31:45Vanessa Wilson finished highest up in 38 in two 3917, Sarah
- 31:50Climb was 42nd and two 4146, and Tara Palm was 48 in two 4451.
- 32:00I think they've kind of, they've run great races in fairness,
- 32:03given the conditions and kind of like given where they were on
- 32:06the quota and stuff like this was just a massive opportunity
- 32:09for them to kind of represent in the 1st place, wasn't it?
- 32:12And I'm glad that they've all kind of got over the line and
- 32:15done themselves justice. Yeah, what an experience.
- 32:17Hey, that's what you'd love to do.
- 32:19And yeah, execute, you know, good races on a, you know, in
- 32:24the best competition would have it would be so cool.
- 32:26Was Fenola McCormack the only Irish representative there?
- 32:29I think she was, wasn't she? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 32:33And no GBS as we have identified.
- 32:35Should I give a clubhouse update?
- 32:41So in terms of clubhouse leaders, because that they're
- 32:43the only two that have registered for points.
- 32:45So there's a three-way tie of a possible 12 points that people
- 32:50could have got so far. There's three on 7.
- 32:54So Liam Stocky, Alan Kennedy and Daniel Wayne are all on 7
- 33:00points. But in terms of proximity, I
- 33:03think the average is 4.75 points.
- 33:07So it's actually pretty close. And in terms of us in our shoe
- 33:10battle, Owen's on 4 and Ryan and I are on 6.
- 33:14So that's where we sit at the moment.
- 33:17Need to see how it unfolds. And Dean, if you want to keep
- 33:20ownership of that spreadsheet that that sounds good, happy.
- 33:27Happy to do. It's all automated.
- 33:28It'll be all automated shortly. Just.
- 33:32Well, then we had to, I know yesterday actually this still is
- 33:36with the women's 1500 meter heats.
- 33:39So don't want to spend too much time because it's just the
- 33:42heats, although I mean obviously this is what makes the semis in
- 33:46the finals. So in the first one, just hold
- 33:49one that in 404.4. Going through.
- 33:52Also from that heat was Sinclair Johnson of the US, Sabiatini of
- 33:57Italy, a war of Kenya, Perez of Spain, Liaise Kawiska of Poland,
- 34:05Soybeg of Sweden. No, actually I've read I've gone
- 34:09too far. Sorry.
- 34:10There was the top six went through, stopped at the Polish
- 34:12athlete whose name I won't try and pronounce again.
- 34:17So yeah, Aaron. Aaron Wallace of GB missed out
- 34:19as the Laura Nicholson of Ireland.
- 34:22They both finished in 8th and 13th respectively.
- 34:25In the second, Heath was won by Nellie Chipchurch, who's
- 34:28identified as kind of like one of the competitors up the front
- 34:31when it gets to the final, or we expect it to be, she's a Kenyan
- 34:35athlete. She won in 407.01.
- 34:38Next was a Polish girl, Kazi Merska in 407.34.
- 34:44Portuguese athlete Alfonso going through Linden Hall of Australia
- 34:48made it through and she looked pretty good to be fair.
- 34:51She was always there thereabouts.
- 34:54Emily, is it Mackie or Mackay of the US?
- 34:57Went through anyway in 408.19 and Reve.
- 35:00Walcott Nolan also made it through.
- 35:03The British athlete there in the third heat was won by Frewani
- 35:07Haylu of Ethiopia, Nikki Hilts of the US also getting through a
- 35:13Joray of Kenya debut, Stafford of Canada, Guillemots of France
- 35:19and Sophie O'Sullivan of Ireland.
- 35:22Did you see how Sophie O'Sullivan crossed the line at
- 35:25all, Owen? She jumps across the line, she
- 35:30got in by the skin of her teeth, but I feel like she really kick
- 35:33on, like the heats are so hard to get through.
- 35:35So I feel like once you get through them sort of pressures
- 35:38off, yeah, and you can sort of race a bit more.
- 35:42So yeah, delighted for Sophie. Quite a really, really good run.
- 35:46And an Irish, Irish athlete, that's you didn't pinch anything
- 35:50from Australia there. Her mother ran for Ireland.
- 35:54She is. She's a bit tanned but she's
- 35:57Irish. She was.
- 35:59She's got that NCAA experience as well, hasn't she?
- 36:01So like these round style racing might suit her.
- 36:06She won. 15. Yeah.
- 36:08And then she, I think she might, she was down at Australian
- 36:11nationals because I think she spends a lot of time in
- 36:14Australia so. Yeah, because Australia is, I
- 36:17think from America it's easier to fly to Australia than it is
- 36:21to Ireland. So and the weather is a little
- 36:23bit nicer, just a tiny bit. TC connections, as they all do.
- 36:27Yeah, just avoiding that RF heat wave, I think.
- 36:31Get the heat wave is long gone now.
- 36:34I'm looking at the window here and it's trying to rain.
- 36:37It's gloomy. And yeah, daylight savings are
- 36:40going to come into effect now pretty soon.
- 36:42So it's going to be very dark mornings and dark evenings for
- 36:46like 5 to 6 months. So yeah, not good.
- 36:51It's well and truly awesome. Absolutely feels like a It's
- 36:55cold. It's not bad up until Halloween
- 36:59and I don't feel like because kind of like that's a bit of a
- 37:01cool little event, but then once once you're into November, it's
- 37:05just grim isn't. It all the shops are starting to
- 37:08sell like the big boxes of roses, like them Christmas
- 37:13chocolates. Yeah, they're all yeah.
- 37:15So you know, when they came out, it's a it's getting close to
- 37:20Christmas and and Halloween. This will be your first
- 37:24Christmas in Ireland and how many years though you're looking
- 37:28forward to that? In two years, that's like, you
- 37:32think like a warm Christmas would be like really cool and
- 37:36all, but I just think, like a nice cozy Christmas with your
- 37:39family in front of the fire. Like, yeah, I prefer I take that
- 37:44any day of the week, to be honest.
- 37:46And yeah, first time in two years.
- 37:47I don't know if I'm feeling the cold more now that I haven't
- 37:51experienced it really in two years.
- 37:54But yeah, because like, I was at a football game the other night
- 37:57and I was frozen. Like I've I've bad circulation
- 38:02as it is. But yeah, I'm not looking
- 38:05forward to for the next couple of months.
- 38:07It's not going to be fun. Whether you got your your double
- 38:10plus gym session in on Christmas Day this year, you reckon?
- 38:14See, hopefully we'll have the home gym set up.
- 38:17We just need to get a squat rack and some weights and so
- 38:19absolutely. Christmas has come early, based
- 38:22on some of the the treadmills arrived, hasn't it?
- 38:26The treadmill and the bike arrived.
- 38:28Yeah, so I was meant to have a rest day on Friday, but I
- 38:30couldn't help myself but to do like 30 minutes on the
- 38:33treadmill. So yeah, it's going to make
- 38:35training. It just takes the pressure off
- 38:36really. Like you're not raising home
- 38:38from work to try and get a run in before, like it gets too
- 38:41dark. So now I could just like flow
- 38:43home, run whenever I want on the treadmill and yeah, it's just
- 38:46going to be nice. Bring it back to the results
- 38:48then. So Sarah Billions actually
- 38:50missed out in that third heat. So she failed to progress.
- 38:54She ran 406.22. So it was kind of like a
- 38:56comfortable miss, unfortunately. And then the last one saw
- 39:03Kippie, a gun taken out in four O 2.55 from French lady
- 39:07Madeleine Irish. Sarah Healey was third.
- 39:11She also went through Italian Zanoni and a Lithuanian
- 39:15athletes. Geez, you don't see many
- 39:17Lithuanians particularly like kind of progressing into the
- 39:20deep end of the competition. And a German lady Wabel.
- 39:25So Lauren Muir also missed out in this one as well, which was
- 39:29sad to see because she's kind of been a great athlete over the
- 39:33years. And she was up there like on the
- 39:35shoulder and in all the right spots.
- 39:37And then just when it came down to it, the kind the whole field
- 39:39just passed there and she almost finished the way Jeff's hole
- 39:43finished. Then was his Urich where she was
- 39:45struggling to run. So yeah, sad to see for Laura,
- 39:49both the rest of them progress and we're on to the semis.
- 39:53I think that's might even be this evening to be fair.
- 39:56Yeah, they are. I think like 8:00.
- 40:00Our time tonight should be good. That takes us to the men's 1500
- 40:05meter heat then. So jeez, I know that this is
- 40:09kind of like the event that I've been looking forward to most,
- 40:11but I wasn't expecting to feel like there was so many shocks in
- 40:15the heat. Like I know we mentioned in the
- 40:17build up that maybe some people might miss out on the final, but
- 40:21some people are missing out on the semis Even so in a similar
- 40:24format as what we've just done. So Nordas won the first heat
- 40:28from Josh Kerr, from Ethan Strand of the US, from an
- 40:31Italian bloke called Riva and Stefan Nielsen in 5th and Sheppo
- 40:37Sheit of South Africa and Sick, they were the qualifiers there.
- 40:42So to miss out from that heat was Jude Thomas of Australia.
- 40:48Who's the lad from South Africa? Mr. Chase, she's a defying all
- 40:54odds, including what the name that God gave him to progress
- 40:58through there. The the big surprise here was
- 41:02that Azerdine Habs, the French guy who's actually got the world
- 41:05lead this year, he's run 327. He didn't get through.
- 41:09He he was done on the line almost by Mr. Chase.
- 41:14So Habs misses out, which is kind of like massive in terms of
- 41:17the final. I mean, I know he's someone we
- 41:20haven't mentioned because it's form hasn't been really all that
- 41:23there recently. Kind of was up there at the
- 41:25beginning of the year. But yeah, the world leaders gone
- 41:29and Jude Thomas was gone from this one as well.
- 41:31So I'm sure Ollie Hall would have been watching these hits
- 41:35with keen interest to see how everyone got on and well, maybe
- 41:41we can we can speak about that situation once I've gone through
- 41:43all the results. So the second he saw an Italian
- 41:47guy every say win it in a 340 nadir of Portugal also went
- 41:53through Neil's Lara. So many people are calling the
- 41:55favorite for the whole thing went through and 3rd Reynolds
- 41:58Chariot of Kenya and Ruben their Hayden of Belgium along with a
- 42:03Canadian guy Foster Malik. So missing out from this heat
- 42:08was Elliott Giles, Adam Spencer, Cattle Doyle of Ireland and
- 42:15Gamma of Ethiopia. Kind of like big names there.
- 42:20Third, he's won by Cole Hawker. Second was Robert Falcon of
- 42:24Germany. Third Neil Gurley of GB.
- 42:28Fourth Timothy Chariot Reynolds Nos brother Sistile, Owen
- 42:32Schouse, Spanish guy Adrian Ben went through, as did an Austrian
- 42:37pallet. So missing out there was Mr.
- 42:41Cameron Meyers of Australia finishing an eighth and then the
- 42:45last Heath was won by Jake Whiteman of GB, former world
- 42:48champ. Portuguese guy was second.
- 42:50Pinto Jonah Kovich of the US went through.
- 42:53So did the French man Mr. Monet, Swedish guy Phil Strom and the
- 42:59Irish Andrew Koskun getting through as well.
- 43:02And the major names multiple to miss out here was Jacob Binga
- 43:06Britson, which we weren't sure whether he's going to make the
- 43:08start line, but he's not going to make the start line of the
- 43:11semi final and fun. Well, coach of Kenya also
- 43:15missing out. So I know Dean, you're watching
- 43:18it. I knew a fast asleep but any
- 43:20comments? I guess like I think was did
- 43:24Ollie Hall get run out in? Was it in Paris that he got run
- 43:27out in the heats and or even when he won Commonwealth Games
- 43:31gold, sort of maybe got run out in a semi final at world champs
- 43:35and then went on to win Commonwealth Games gold like a
- 43:38month or so later. And I only reference that
- 43:41because I just think the like you just have to be either
- 43:45tactically or physically slightly off in the 1500 at the
- 43:49minute and even in the heats you get run out.
- 43:51So like, yeah, I mean, it's, it's it's so it's so such fine
- 43:57margins, isn't it? And it's such a, it makes for
- 44:02such a fun race to watch because often in running, like whoever's
- 44:07absolutely fitter just gets to win, whereas the the tactics and
- 44:12getting everything right makes such a difference.
- 44:15So it's just, yeah, I just saw they're really fun races to
- 44:18watch. And it was a shame because
- 44:21particularly because I had him for bronze, but Kovich fell over
- 44:24and I think maybe they're appealing, but I don't think
- 44:27he'll get reinstated because it sounds like they're taking a
- 44:29harder line in terms of who can progress after a fall.
- 44:35But yeah, and I think the biggest shock and will upset me
- 44:39because he's my gold medal prediction in the 5K.
- 44:41But yeah, Jacob not progressing and sort of, not only did he not
- 44:44progress, but he didn't look very good.
- 44:46So it's a bit of a concern, isn't it?
- 44:47Yeah. And you wonder, did he know that
- 44:51was kind of going to be the outcome, or was he completely
- 44:54unaware? And it wasn't until like maybe
- 44:56the third lap and he's like, shit, this isn't to be, is it?
- 45:00I think he, he's posted about it already on his Instagram saying
- 45:03this was always going to be a a potential outcome, but not that
- 45:08it's going to stop, you know, not that it's going to distract
- 45:10him from sort of, you know, from things like all, you know,
- 45:14dentist's confidence or will was something to that effect.
- 45:17But I saw him post some stuff about being in Tokyo and
- 45:21collecting some Pokémon cards and thought, geez, going to be
- 45:24on for a gold here. And then, yeah, it's done.
- 45:28A steer. I was trying to zoom in and see
- 45:31how much he's spending on these Pokémon cards and doing the
- 45:34currency conversions because the same one of them was 2000
- 45:39Japanese yen, which is what, roughly 200 Aussie dollars.
- 45:43But then there was a couple where he had the price, so I'm
- 45:45sure it would have been a bit more than that, but I'm sure it
- 45:49wouldn't have had his pockets at the same time either because he
- 45:51seemed very happy to be splashing his cash around Tokyo.
- 45:56Collectibles are a good investment long term anyways.
- 45:58Probably just savvy, you know? Well, he collects Moses as well
- 46:04in his garage, doesn't he? It's probably got as many of
- 46:06them as he does bloody Pokémon cards.
- 46:08One thing which I was thinking of here was obviously like all
- 46:13three of the Australian guys have gone out.
- 46:15So come Myers, Jude Thomas and Adam Spencer.
- 46:19And I feel like for Jude and for Adam Spencer, maybe success for
- 46:24them would have been getting to the semi final Like it would
- 46:27they would have been going into this not knowing whether they'll
- 46:30make it out the heat and not being like a big goal and to not
- 46:34do so maybe isn't really a failure.
- 46:37It's just like, OK, we went there.
- 46:39It was for Jude this first time representing Australia at this
- 46:43level and they had to go and it didn't work.
- 46:46And that's fine. And I know it's not Cam's fault,
- 46:50but a lot of pressure and expectation has attached, been
- 46:54attached to his name, hasn't it? In terms of like the comparisons
- 46:57to Jacob as he's gone through the age groups and kind of been
- 47:01produced in similar times and stuff for him.
- 47:03But I feel like he himself and maybe the general public would
- 47:08have been expecting him to get out the heat.
- 47:10So it's probably a little bit disappointing to see that he
- 47:13didn't do that. And how did that right, how did
- 47:16his race go? Because I can't see a scenario
- 47:19where he, like, I couldn't envision a scenario where he
- 47:21didn't qualify. Like was he too far back?
- 47:24Did you just have nothing left in the last lap to kick?
- 47:27Like what happened? It was a little bit messy,
- 47:29wasn't it? Like, so let's see what time it
- 47:31was. It was born in so it was one in
- 47:34three 41341 high. So that's like slow as anything.
- 47:40So given that they were all bunched for like large periods
- 47:44of the race and then there was a couple of surges here and there
- 47:47and he would get like shuffled back.
- 47:49He would have to go wide. So on the third lap he pulled
- 47:53out like on into lane 2 definitely.
- 47:55And he's trying to like work his way up.
- 47:57But then once he gets himself into a better position, the
- 48:00surge goes again, he gets shuffled back and then he's got
- 48:04like elbows out with people and stuff.
- 48:06And coming up the home straight, it wasn't as though he was done
- 48:10late on. It was maybe like 50 meters or
- 48:12so to go. You can see he wasn't going to
- 48:15make it. I mean, look at like it's a big
- 48:18learning experience for him, isn't it?
- 48:19It's his first major champs and stuff.
- 48:21But it's just goes to show, like when you kind of in that
- 48:25Australian bubble and the kind of expectation that can be put
- 48:30on someone from being like the clear star from just your
- 48:34country, the world stage is a different kettle of fish, isn't
- 48:38it? And you're mixing it with the
- 48:39best, the best of the best. So, I mean, he'll come back and
- 48:43he'll do better, no doubt. But yeah.
- 48:47Yeah, I wonder, you remember he had that medical episode not
- 48:50that long ago. Like, like, not that it was a
- 48:55major thing, but you don't, you don't need to be off by a lot.
- 48:58Like I think a couple of the guys, like for context, like the
- 49:011500 is so stacked. Like 4th in his race was Timothy
- 49:05Chariot, who's, you know, former world champion himself.
- 49:11But like, yeah, the couple of guys just in front of him and
- 49:14maybe like 330-1332 runners, which are exceptionally good,
- 49:18but he's just come off the back of running, what, 329?
- 49:22So in his peak fitness, probably you would assume he gets
- 49:27through, but perhaps, yeah, I don't feel like he made any
- 49:30necessarily any huge tactical missteps, but maybe he just was
- 49:34just slightly off and that's all you need to be, I think.
- 49:37And then he's probably looking at that thinking, we've run
- 49:39340-1342 and I finished 8th. Like why didn't I just go to the
- 49:43front and make it honest? I would have been stronger than
- 49:47at least like, well, I would have been in the top six
- 49:49potentially. But like, that's hindsight,
- 49:52isn't it? And these are the learning
- 49:54experiences that you get from racing championship rounds.
- 49:57Yeah, I feel like Adam Spencer runs like he knows how to
- 50:00control a race. You know, like all those guys go
- 50:02through the NCAA system and know how to sort of manage the person
- 50:06on the outside and and dictate tempo.
- 50:09I just didn't think he had the legs, but he tactically and sort
- 50:12of knows what to do. But I mean, I don't think it's,
- 50:18yeah, I just think the margins are so tiny and you, you really
- 50:21have to be super fit right at the right time.
- 50:24That's not to say this is me having a go, am I there?
- 50:26Just I didn't want to like kinda just skip over it because I feel
- 50:32like it is a fair assessment almost.
- 50:36But obviously there's other big athletes who've gone out as
- 50:38well. So overall, hubs, LH, Giles of
- 50:43GB, he potentially would have expected to get through Jacob
- 50:48and coach like we've said. So he's not the only one to have
- 50:51missed the cup. But yeah, it's a shame.
- 50:56Although like looking at it from the other end, what did you make
- 50:59of the guys who did get through in terms of thinking about who
- 51:02might be the eventual winner is are you thinking about our
- 51:08should have chosen him from a top three or you're pretty
- 51:11confident with what you've come with?
- 51:13I still think Laros looks really good.
- 51:16Mild ass is probably one that's jumped up in terms of rankings
- 51:20and they're Co achieved by my problems is dead.
- 51:23So yeah, I mean it's so interesting.
- 51:28I mean, so I'm looking at like the current ranks for the men's
- 51:311500 number ones. The goose that Fanuel Co H is
- 51:36for if this Habs like this is based on I think ranking points
- 51:43at the minute for like the men's 1500, like cams ranked fourteen,
- 51:50but like there's not many points separating a lot of them and
- 51:53what's 20 fours getting through Josh, how he's in there like all
- 51:57in the top 20. So yeah, I just think it's all
- 52:00just so tight. So which would which is why it's
- 52:02such an exciting event to spectate and follow you.
- 52:05Have some huge casualties. It's hard to judge based on
- 52:09these first rounds as well because people do take it easy
- 52:12and just kind of do what needs to be done to progress, don't
- 52:15they? But I thought that Josh Kerr
- 52:17looks pretty comfortable as you would expect as well and Hawker
- 52:22too. So I mean I don't know if you
- 52:26can take anything from the fact that Whiteman one is he's but I
- 52:29wouldn't have expected them to really feature in the final.
- 52:31But interested to see if if he is maybe going to throw the cat
- 52:36amongst the pigeons. Been there done that before.
- 52:39And thankfully the recent interviewee Mr. Koskaran made it
- 52:44through as well. So he lives to fight another day
- 52:46be be a good result if he can get into the final, wouldn't it?
- 52:50Absolutely. He was delighted to get through
- 52:52like again, the heat is a free for all.
- 52:55Like it's it's so hard to get through like the heat.
- 52:58So once again semifinal, the pressure is off a little bit and
- 53:01you can sort of race a bit more. So yeah, hopefully he can push
- 53:07on now, get to the final. All right, then.
- 53:09That's all we have seen from Tokyo up to now in terms of
- 53:12events that are relevant to us and we're concerned with.
- 53:16So I don't know, Owen, have you got a training weeks to deliver?
- 53:19Yeah, I've the training reach at this week star, so I'm back
- 53:23doing like a proper week. Oh, this started on Monday the
- 53:298th. I'm just watching Copenhagen
- 53:33half as well. They're after going through 5K
- 53:36and 13 something and when the lads is wearing them adios
- 53:42Adidas ones and he's after it's headed rain to Copenhagen and
- 53:46he's after absolutely buckling himself going around the corner.
- 53:50Yeah, there's no grip on them. Shares.
- 53:52Dean knows about that. So wait, when did this week
- 53:57start? The C Dean, unfortunately this
- 54:00is so sorry. I just watch you're preparing
- 54:03this. I don't know if you've noticed
- 54:04this past week, Dean, has been the the week that we've spent
- 54:07most time together since I've got back in Perth.
- 54:10And that's unfortunately because not because I've returned to run
- 54:13in, but because you've came to the dark side and we've done
- 54:16some cross training together. I have, we could probably
- 54:19mention that as Owen gets a proper training week together.
- 54:23But did you, what did you do, Ryan, in terms of non, in terms
- 54:27of bike and swim and like any other exercise, I suppose, what
- 54:32did you put together this week? One gym session, probably 5 bike
- 54:39rides and two swims I think which you you seemingly took
- 54:43great pleasure in bustering me in the pool.
- 54:47Yeah, well, that's only because you're doing your best to drop
- 54:49me on the bike. So I was just, I was just
- 54:51putting that in the memory bank who was sort of.
- 54:56Don't put the bear, Ryan. Yeah, we went.
- 55:00I thought we were going for a casual loop of the river on
- 55:03Friday, and then I don't know if Ryan had a coffee date to catch,
- 55:08but I had the morning off. I was going to a school
- 55:11athletics carnival, so I was thinking it'd be a bit more
- 55:14casual, but we sort of caught up to a few people that went around
- 55:18that went past us maybe with what, about 25 KS to go or so,
- 55:23And then that was it. It was game on and I was just
- 55:26hanging on for dear life. But it was good.
- 55:28It was a good ride. It was probably the most
- 55:29exercise, most exercise I've done.
- 55:31I think I was riding for 2 1/2 hours on Friday.
- 55:33Which was good when I start my week.
- 55:36Yeah. Please.
- 55:38Right. So Monday easy.
- 55:41Doubleday. So I got 40 minutes in the
- 55:43morning. We had a few strides again just
- 55:47to introduce some speed back into the legs.
- 55:49And then that evening I done 30 minutes at 426 per kilometer.
- 55:54And Tuesday is a double threshold day.
- 55:58So in the morning I had two by 10 minutes off 5 S rough 10
- 56:05minutes. Flow for five, room for 10
- 56:07minutes, flow for five. And these 10s, I'm trying to hit
- 56:10anywhere between like 3:30 and 3:20, just feeling, feeling good
- 56:15because I know I have lost some bit of fitness and since I've
- 56:19come back. So I'm just like trying to not
- 56:21like dig myself a hole earlier on.
- 56:23How come the five minute floats as opposed to like a two or
- 56:27three if it's an inverter, commas only like three 30s on
- 56:31your arms said Did you say it was 2 by 10 minutes with a 5
- 56:37minute floats? Yeah.
- 56:39How come the flow is like so long almost?
- 56:44I don't, no. I'd say just so I fully recover
- 56:47it like the flow is still like it's not going super fast.
- 56:50It's around like 4 minute kilometer.
- 56:52So I say it's just to get some distance in the legs rather than
- 56:56like it's 30 minute that in total that session was 30
- 57:01minutes, 330 sixes. So it's like a solid effort like
- 57:07in total. Yeah, I guess with the the
- 57:10threshold stuff, it's making sure you're clear in the lactic
- 57:13before you go back to your efforts.
- 57:15So there's almost no harm in extending those floats as the.
- 57:19Yeah. And I could really push another
- 57:21little bit like I could probably get to like the low three 20s if
- 57:25I wanted because the recovery is that a little bit more.
- 57:28And that evening, I then done 7 by 3 minutes off 60 seconds.
- 57:35So these ones here, I'm trying to hit between 3:15 per
- 57:40kilometer and 310 per kilometer. And I actually done the lactate
- 57:43testing. So after the third Rep I was
- 57:46like 4.6 and after the last Rep I was 4.5.
- 57:50So it was all right. Like I'd, I'd like to be hitting
- 57:55like 3 or 5 for them ones, but still very early in the cross
- 57:58country block. So hopefully I'll get them, I'll
- 58:01get fitter as the weeks come. And that Wednesday morning then
- 58:06I got out for 60 minutes and umm, I felt so so so bad.
- 58:13Like the 1st 15 minutes went by and it wasn't too bad.
- 58:17Like I normally before I run in the morning, I just have like a
- 58:19bowl of corn flakes and a little small bowl because I don't like
- 58:24running like fasted and umm, I don't know what I was low blood
- 58:27sugar or like for 45 minutes of that run.
- 58:31I felt lightheaded. And just a week.
- 58:33Did you ever get that feeling? Yeah, yes.
- 58:36Just felt so, so shit and still got 12.7 kilometers in for 42
- 58:43pace. But how?
- 58:45Big was you you Tuesday in total.
- 58:48Tuesday was I think 28 kilometers.
- 58:51So I did have a relatively big dinner.
- 58:53I make sure to have a big dinner if I'm running like again over
- 58:56like an hour the next morning. But yeah, I don't know what it
- 59:01was. I really need to see a
- 59:02nutritionist. Like I don't have the best
- 59:04relationship with food. Umm.
- 59:06So I really, yeah, I'm going to look into seeing a nutritionist.
- 59:10But the following morning, oh, that even when I got out for
- 59:12circuits, so done my circuit class.
- 59:14And then Thursday morning, I got out for 70 minutes and before
- 59:17this run, I'd like 2 slices of toast with like a jam.
- 59:22And I felt a lot better in that one.
- 59:24So that was 15 kilometers. Just on that, umm, you don't
- 59:29have the best relationship with food.
- 59:31In what sense? So like having a Gaelic
- 59:35background, like playing like contact sport, I would have been
- 59:38a lot heavier, could go into running and like you line up on
- 59:41the start line of these races and like, I feel like I'm just
- 59:44like, by far the heavier. Umm.
- 59:48So like in previous history, I've umm, tried to like train a
- 59:52lot and restrict my eating. And I think it was like 3 years
- 59:56ago I got like super sick and I, I was just, I couldn't went for
- 59:59like 2 weeks. So umm, yeah, I'm always
- 1:00:03conscious of umm. Of basically trying to like get
- 1:00:08lighter, but I know to train like I'm running nearly 130
- 1:00:11kilometers a week, like I have to eat to fuel that or I will
- 1:00:14get sick and injured. And I have a history of bone
- 1:00:16stress as well. So, umm, I just have to be so
- 1:00:19careful like little things like having a biscuit a night and
- 1:00:22like feeling guilty, like it's not a good way to be so.
- 1:00:26And like, you need that fuel, like like a sweet treat is good.
- 1:00:31So umm, yeah. I just really need to like
- 1:00:34educate myself more on that sort of stuff.
- 1:00:36And yeah, it's fuel at the end of the day.
- 1:00:39I'm here in Jake Smith, like that interview, really.
- 1:00:42Like lighter. Like while it does make you run
- 1:00:45faster, it's not going to make you run faster for a long period
- 1:00:49of time. So you're better off like
- 1:00:52getting to like a healthy weight and having that consistency in
- 1:00:54your running career to get the better results.
- 1:00:56So umm, yeah, it's just something to for me to work on
- 1:01:00really. I'd say that's something like so
- 1:01:03common amongst runners as well because like everyone, I mean,
- 1:01:07you want the physique as well as the fitness, don't you?
- 1:01:10And you think, oh, well, I can't eat this or that if I want to
- 1:01:12be, like, shredded and lean to run well and like, it just comes
- 1:01:17in waves, doesn't it? Like, you think you're doing the
- 1:01:19right thing and then you have a binge.
- 1:01:21And I reckon, like, so many runners, like, kind of guilty of
- 1:01:25this. And it's just probably better
- 1:01:27that people speak about it. They're not.
- 1:01:29So. Yeah.
- 1:01:30Yeah, I I've had a few mates that have been into like lifting
- 1:01:34and like sports where where mass and eating to convert gains is
- 1:01:42like a requirement. And so it's and so they have a
- 1:01:45much healthier relationship. And I think runners, I think
- 1:01:48feel like your body often craves like carbs, but then you
- 1:01:51probably body probably needs and we probably don't.
- 1:01:54If you're generally a bit leaning towards under rating
- 1:01:56like protein in in particular. I think like that's something
- 1:02:00that I used to not prioritize at all.
- 1:02:03IU used to just if I was hungry, eat something, but it was not
- 1:02:07all that nutritious or perhaps not the best mix of macros,
- 1:02:13right? So yeah, something I still
- 1:02:16struggle with, but I think the idea of getting a nutrition like
- 1:02:21a nutritionist or dietitian is a great idea.
- 1:02:25Yeah, so Thursday then I do my gym session and my coach gave me
- 1:02:28a new gym program. So going to be working on that
- 1:02:32now for the cross country block. And Friday was supposed to be my
- 1:02:35rest day, but my the treadmill came so I just got out.
- 1:02:39I had to get out and do a 30 minute jog on it.
- 1:02:42And yeah, I feel like I can run way more control on it.
- 1:02:45Like on a run outside, like the heart rate can creep up.
- 1:02:49But when you're on the treadmill, I just feel like I
- 1:02:52can keep my heart rate really low, which is again, way more
- 1:02:54beneficial for them, like sort of recovery runs.
- 1:02:58You should track the kilometers, total kilometers you do on the
- 1:03:01treadmill. Just out of interest.
- 1:03:03Like nothing to do with training load, but purely to and now 1
- 1:03:09kilometer on the treadmill equals €1.00 paid off for
- 1:03:12something like that. Yeah, hopefully, Yeah.
- 1:03:14Well, I'll use it a lot now in the coming months.
- 1:03:16So I should get my my value for money out of it.
- 1:03:21Saturday I had hills so I done I back doing like 20 minute
- 1:03:29warmups just to I know it's an extra kilometer, so just builds
- 1:03:33up a little bit more mileage cost for a pass.
- 1:03:35Well, I've been doing 15 minute warmups, but it was 15 minutes a
- 1:03:38threshold, so again hitting that like 320 per kilometer.
- 1:03:42Then I had a 5 minute jog and I just changed my shoes into the
- 1:03:46Nike. So I'd done the threshold in the
- 1:03:48Rebel V4, just an old Rebel, like give no plan or anything.
- 1:03:52And then for the hills, I went into the structure embracing my
- 1:03:57inner Coopers here and I done 12 by 15 second hills off like a
- 1:04:05job back recovery and again, just focusing on like keeping a
- 1:04:08bright pairing up the hill and yeah, just trying to get off as
- 1:04:12quick as possible. So is.
- 1:04:14That the the mechanic stuff you're thinking about?
- 1:04:18Is that a leaf you've taken out of Cost Green's book?
- 1:04:21Yeah. Absolutely is kick and stuff.
- 1:04:23Yeah, absolutely. So really just focus on like
- 1:04:26staying up high and all that sort of stuff.
- 1:04:28So yeah, these little things just trying to work on.
- 1:04:34And then in the evening, I just done 45 minutes easy on the
- 1:04:39treadmill again. So 9.5 kilometers at 442 pace.
- 1:04:43And now I have to diff and do my long run.
- 1:04:47I've got 90 minutes, 90 minutes. And then the last 15 minutes
- 1:04:52I'll pick it up for tempo pace. So yeah, around that three 25320
- 1:04:57pace and yeah, that I will be around 125 kilometers for the
- 1:05:02week, so hopefully build on that and just trying to keep on top
- 1:05:06of sleep and yeah, again, a massage next Friday.
- 1:05:10So yeah, just I'm actually going to get tested soon enough as
- 1:05:12well. I'm going to get my lactates
- 1:05:15done and all that in a lab. So that will be in the next two
- 1:05:18weeks just to see that my zones are like correct and all.
- 1:05:21So yeah, it's exciting. I don't know.
- 1:05:24I don't know, you gotta literally run Owen.
- 1:05:27But like we didn't really talk about the interview, but like,
- 1:05:33yeah, any Kayla insights, takeaways?
- 1:05:35Like I just really enjoyed the conversation, particularly being
- 1:05:37sort of non Irish and and sort of listening to to you guys, you
- 1:05:42know, have a a fun curious chat together.
- 1:05:45Like, I got a lot out of it in terms of maybe not necessarily
- 1:05:50the training, but everything he does in and around the training
- 1:05:52and how they and how professional people are.
- 1:05:55Umm, but yeah. Was there anything in particular
- 1:05:58that you really loved? I loved that and I love the
- 1:06:02heart rate sort of stuff because like your heart doesn't lie.
- 1:06:05So if you keep tracking your heart rate and have that so you
- 1:06:08know what your heart rate should be over time, it's really good
- 1:06:10metric to like train off. So umm, like I know Jake
- 1:06:14Barcloth, he doesn't really go into that.
- 1:06:16He goes by feel, but I feel like just being in tune with your
- 1:06:19heart, like it's, it's such a good thing to do.
- 1:06:22And also like the recovery aspect, like I like right now
- 1:06:26I'm probably doing the same mileage as him and he's not
- 1:06:29working a full time job. So sometimes like less is more.
- 1:06:33So in my head, I'm like, all right, I'm doing the same amount
- 1:06:36as like a professional runner. So if I do like, I'm obviously
- 1:06:39not absorbing the training as well as he probably is because
- 1:06:42he's not working a nine to five job.
- 1:06:44So I could probably cut back a little bit, absorb the training
- 1:06:47more and that might benefit me even more.
- 1:06:49So just little things like that. Umm, we, I was just super, super
- 1:06:54cool to hear like his week and how he goes about stuff and
- 1:06:59yeah, hopefully he does well now in the Sammies.
- 1:07:02Ian and I was saying the the stuff around like how to manage
- 1:07:06his body through this kind of next week in terms of like his
- 1:07:09warm up routine is cooled down routine, like when he'll do like
- 1:07:13some strides and stuff like that.
- 1:07:15It's the type of thing you don't really because everyone talks
- 1:07:17about the training and like kind of their approaches and stuff
- 1:07:20like that. But the actual reality of going
- 1:07:23to a world champs and having to race maybe four or five times
- 1:07:27during a week's period, how do you manage your body through
- 1:07:29that was cool, wasn't it? Yeah, because I've always
- 1:07:33wondered that, like, here's a mad week and you don't get
- 1:07:35enough stimulus out of just running a 1500.
- 1:07:38So he needs to sort of like keep loose and fresh while preparing
- 1:07:44every second day for a race. So yeah, it was Cooper Sup with
- 1:07:47a super cool to hear like how we like actually planned this week.
- 1:07:54And even his approach to sort of being in a hot environment and
- 1:07:57how careful he is around ex heat exposure, deliberate heat
- 1:08:02exposure for training stimulus, but then avoiding on too much
- 1:08:05exposure or exposure that he's worried he's not going to adapt
- 1:08:09to from. Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:08:13Because the heat can really, really mess you up, especially
- 1:08:15if not used to it. And like, to be honest, no
- 1:08:17matter how much training you do, like running, like you're never
- 1:08:20going to mimic that exact race situation in training.
- 1:08:23Whereas like the call room, the heat, the humidity.
- 1:08:26So it's just been as prepared as possible for that situation.
- 1:08:30And yeah, I said like that it was cool to see him get rid of
- 1:08:34heat and hopefully now he'll kick on.
- 1:08:36I was like, he's still hopeful on his payment from Grand Slam
- 1:08:39track as well. I.
- 1:08:39Think the all are. You'd have to be, wouldn't?
- 1:08:44Chat. Hi, thanks Owen for your
- 1:08:47training week. And he's also literally had to
- 1:08:49dip out because he's physically going for his long run.
- 1:08:51So that leaves me in being here to suffer in the pits of being
- 1:08:56injured. Like literally how how is that
- 1:08:58salt? And for salt in the winds, He's
- 1:09:01done his part on the podcast and now he's just gone out to
- 1:09:04actually go and do his run. And then me and you sat here
- 1:09:07injured finishing off. So do you want to tell us where
- 1:09:10you're up to? Yeah, so I got an MRI on Monday
- 1:09:17and still haven't got the results from the report yet, but
- 1:09:21have got copy copies of the images sent to both my GP and
- 1:09:24physio. So got some insights from both
- 1:09:28of them which were really helpful.
- 1:09:31So yeah, I think as expected, it's sort of my right pubic bone
- 1:09:37that's sort of a bit more lit up.
- 1:09:39But there's you can have brightness is this is what's
- 1:09:42sort of been explained to me. But you can sort of have the
- 1:09:44appearance of sort of like, I don't know if it's like bone
- 1:09:47edema, but where it sort of lights up in your pubic area.
- 1:09:52And so that's sort of not uncommon particularly because
- 1:09:55that joints being used quite a bit.
- 1:09:57But one higher up on my right one is sort of a bit more lit
- 1:10:01up. And so that's potentially
- 1:10:03something that's is where I think my sort of discomforts
- 1:10:07coming from. So we sort of did some more
- 1:10:09functional tests. A lot of things have settled
- 1:10:11down in the area like before it was sort of like hotspots
- 1:10:13everywhere, whereas now it's sort of just one particular pain
- 1:10:17point, which is good, but it's sort of not pain free in one
- 1:10:20area. So given I've already deloaded
- 1:10:22for it's now been two weeks, doing another maybe week or two
- 1:10:27is probably sensible. Like it's still a bit of
- 1:10:30discomfort in that area, but nothing when I'm riding or doing
- 1:10:32my gym or when I'm swimming. So sort of makes sense to keep
- 1:10:36deloading. Get there, hopefully get the
- 1:10:40copy of the report from the radiologist next early next
- 1:10:43week. That might give us some further
- 1:10:45insight at a appointment with the sports stock coming up just
- 1:10:50to sort of they might have some further sort of insights into
- 1:10:53the images, which will be useful.
- 1:10:57But yeah, in the meantime, I sort of have been focusing a lot
- 1:10:59more on the gym, which has been fun to be honest.
- 1:11:01I've sort of really enjoyed being far more deliberate in the
- 1:11:04gym. Feel like I'm getting something
- 1:11:06out of that. And then, yeah, sort of trying
- 1:11:09to get some sort of excitement by jumping on the bike with you
- 1:11:12or jumping in the pool and sort of getting stuck into those
- 1:11:15things. So swam today, swam yesterday,
- 1:11:19is a bigger bike the day before. And yeah, just need to sort of
- 1:11:22make a habit of that. But yeah, nothing, nothing too
- 1:11:26severe, which is good. And yeah, hoping that this
- 1:11:28settle down sooner rather than later because yeah, very much
- 1:11:32would like to be back running as soon as I can.
- 1:11:35Doesn't it make you think that like once you do take a step
- 1:11:38back when you have this a bit of a niggle, I'm sorry that we can
- 1:11:41relate now on this level, but here we are.
- 1:11:45That you won't kind of like ignore little feelings if they
- 1:11:49arise again and like try and push through it because you're
- 1:11:53conscious of like, oh shit, another week running on that
- 1:11:56might actually mean another three or four weeks on the
- 1:11:59sidelines. I.
- 1:12:00Think so. I think, yeah.
- 1:12:02For me, anything that, I don't know how right or wrong this is,
- 1:12:06but I find anything that tends to loosen off as I run is
- 1:12:10something that I can probably get away with.
- 1:12:13Like to be honest, there's not. There's not often when I'll be
- 1:12:18jogging it from time to time where I'm not feeling something
- 1:12:22somewhere. So if I was too careful, I think
- 1:12:25I would avoid training too much. But I think training on
- 1:12:29something where the pain scale goes up through the run, it's
- 1:12:32sort of that that for me is a sign to to sort of back off.
- 1:12:36So yeah, I think like, I think maybe, yeah, you know, like when
- 1:12:41you with the benefit of hindsight, but I don't know, I
- 1:12:44wouldn't change too much. I sort of once I had this pain,
- 1:12:47I like the day after the race or two days after I saw the physio,
- 1:12:51I sort of gave my pain scores. The original side of the pain
- 1:12:55was like an AB lower abdominal thing.
- 1:12:58And then this has come off the back of that.
- 1:12:59Like can certainly reflect with the physio and see what he says
- 1:13:04in terms of lessons learned. But I just, I just think as
- 1:13:09well, like if you're it's a load based sport, like you noticed
- 1:13:12this right, with swimming and riding, how different it feels
- 1:13:15on your body versus running by running just loads your body up
- 1:13:19as well. So yeah, I, I, I still don't, I
- 1:13:23don't want to be too not prepared to sort of take on
- 1:13:27some, some load based discomfort.
- 1:13:32But yeah, certainly want to be more aware.
- 1:13:35And, and I think for me, what I've learned is I think you sort
- 1:13:39of just de risk things if you're prepared to do more gym.
- 1:13:42I just think if you're more prepared to have stronger
- 1:13:45muscles and, and work on those, particularly as you're getting
- 1:13:48older. I think my physio mentioned to
- 1:13:50me, because they're sort of chipping in between my pubic
- 1:13:53bones, like in the sort of where they, where they mate, you can
- 1:13:57sort of see chips. And he sort of said, oh, look,
- 1:13:59not unusual, particularly, you know, for a, a masters marathon
- 1:14:03runner. And I said, pardon me, come
- 1:14:05again, Thought maybe I want to text him before the consult.
- 1:14:10But like, you know, I think I think, yeah.
- 1:14:13And that Cam Levin's interview him sort of emphasizing the
- 1:14:16importance of strength. I just think if you've got
- 1:14:18strong muscles in particular, you're just going to de risk
- 1:14:21your your body when it comes to training.
- 1:14:23And and it's really not, to be honest, it's not really
- 1:14:26something I've spent much time prioritizing because I've been
- 1:14:29pretty lucky from an injury perspective getting away with
- 1:14:32just running. So yeah, so I'm sort of enjoying
- 1:14:35the fact that it's it's it's forcing me to be a bit more
- 1:14:41deliberate with the gym and hopefully something good comes
- 1:14:44of it. Yeah, and that wasn't an
- 1:14:47observation of you, more so an observation of myself as well.
- 1:14:50Like choosing to run through pain can lead to prolonged
- 1:14:55periods on the sidelines rather than just acknowledging it for
- 1:14:58what it is. And maybe go and I'll actually
- 1:15:00go and see someone about this because that's right how I got
- 1:15:04mine so bad. Yeah, that's right.
- 1:15:07Yeah. So if you were to do it again,
- 1:15:08because, I mean, it's hard though, because like I said,
- 1:15:10you're sort of running with a degree of discomfort often.
- 1:15:14Like it's hard to know what's, it's hard to know that you had a
- 1:15:17crack in your foot and that you would now just going to create a
- 1:15:21a long term injury from what you did.
- 1:15:23Like is it that you would have consulted with someone earlier,
- 1:15:26got an earlier scan? Like what's what, what's your,
- 1:15:30Yeah, what what are your reflections in terms of the
- 1:15:32decisions you would have made differently?
- 1:15:36Probably should have backed off and addressed it properly in
- 1:15:38February after Maragami rather than compounding that with a
- 1:15:42marathon block on top of it and actually going through with the
- 1:15:45marathon. Because in hindsight now that
- 1:15:50three months or 10 weeks, whatever it was period of just
- 1:15:53like continuing to load what was already paying at the time as
- 1:15:57like obviously just caused so much more delay in a in a
- 1:16:01return. But when you fly in, like all
- 1:16:03you can think about is like, I want to get this next result on
- 1:16:06the board and stuff, isn't it? And like you rightly point out,
- 1:16:09like sometimes pain is meant to be there and it's like just part
- 1:16:12of your training load. So yeah, it's just about kind of
- 1:16:17not having those biases that you can have in your own mind and
- 1:16:20you can choose to ignore things or you can choose to kind of
- 1:16:24like tell yourself that it's the right decision.
- 1:16:27But if you actually say these things out loud, they'll go and
- 1:16:30say to a physio or a doctor. They may tell you something that
- 1:16:34at the time you don't want to hear, but long term point of
- 1:16:37view it might be what's best. Yeah.
- 1:16:39And I tend to think it's the same with like a coach or to the
- 1:16:44extent you worry too much that the lack of objectivity is going
- 1:16:48to cloud your judgement, then if you can outsource that decision
- 1:16:53to someone else, then that seems like the best like is often a
- 1:16:57good course of action. I think like, yeah, I think for
- 1:17:01me, I'm sort of partly outsourcing.
- 1:17:03Like you still have to own your own decisions in your body and
- 1:17:06stuff. Like he's it's still a bit
- 1:17:07self-directed. Like they can't tell you
- 1:17:09everything can if you it's your symptoms, like they're, they're
- 1:17:12sort of going to guide you based on only what you give them.
- 1:17:15So you need to be honest in your assessment, self assessments.
- 1:17:18But yeah, I feel like I've asked the physio these questions.
- 1:17:22The physio then has said as well that I'm limited in terms of my
- 1:17:26ability to interpret the information that comes from
- 1:17:29these reports as well. So you need to see someone else
- 1:17:31that he partly outsources part of the, the diagnosis as well.
- 1:17:36And so, you know, that's, that's sort of, I think makes makes
- 1:17:41sense is where you can sort of find the right people to make
- 1:17:44objective assessments to the extent they can.
- 1:17:47Is it a useful way to do it? Like we were saying yesterday as
- 1:17:50well though, there is potentially still a place for
- 1:17:53some of this cross training in your normal training week when
- 1:17:56you are fit and you're doing sessions and stuff.
- 1:17:59Because I guess if you think of it, the time spent under a
- 1:18:05training load as that increases your fitness and your optimal
- 1:18:09run and performance increases. But then that becomes a point
- 1:18:12where when you're doing all your training via the intense run,
- 1:18:16and that time spent training starts to tail off because it's
- 1:18:22just too much. But if you can supplement that
- 1:18:25with cross training and deload some of it, you can probably
- 1:18:28actually extend that so that the more time you do spend training
- 1:18:31is actually worthwhile rather than becoming counterproductive
- 1:18:34and just running yourself into an injury or fatigue or
- 1:18:37whatever. Yeah.
- 1:18:38And that's probably something we should be mindful of as we're
- 1:18:41hopefully returning to re reloading everything is that you
- 1:18:44can sort of moderate that with some lower, lower load cardio
- 1:18:51activity. And in terms of like a base or
- 1:18:54an estimated time you would want to be back running, you don't
- 1:18:57want to think about that, yes. Tuesday.
- 1:19:00Wednesday, probably. In a perfect world.
- 1:19:06No, I don't know, to be honest. I'm I'm away down South with the
- 1:19:10family this week. Sort of the next sort of touch
- 1:19:15point with the physio would be once we get a copy of that
- 1:19:18report. So I'm just going to take my
- 1:19:21swimming and writing stuff with me and yeah, just keep
- 1:19:25presenting with my symptoms to the physio each week, do these
- 1:19:30functional tests until it settles down, keep my SNC.
- 1:19:35So I think, I think in a week and 1/2 from now, if I present
- 1:19:41to the physio and there's little to no pain when we do these
- 1:19:44functional assessments, I would say we're probably able to
- 1:19:47introduce some running. But I'll just ask him at that
- 1:19:50time if that's what he thinks is the way to go.
- 1:19:54Assuming, yeah, assuming everything comes clear from a,
- 1:19:57you know, in terms of the the report that's due.
- 1:20:02With the essence, I don't know if this is you can relate to
- 1:20:04this, but I've always thought because I don't really do any
- 1:20:07usually when I'm training, my fear of integrating it is you
- 1:20:12know how long you're going to have DOMS for and you know that
- 1:20:14that's going to mean it's going to be horrible jogging and then
- 1:20:17maybe like your sessions going to be shifts and stuff.
- 1:20:19But the reality is like the the upside of actually just taking a
- 1:20:23step back and implementing it is so there's so much more upside
- 1:20:28to it. So hopefully we can kind of give
- 1:20:30ourselves a bit of a foundation now so that it becomes part of
- 1:20:33the regular routine. Yeah, that's right.
- 1:20:35And it's particularly the first few times you do at the gym
- 1:20:38after not doing it in a while, where everything sort of is
- 1:20:40quite sore and stiff. Because I think, I think the SNC
- 1:20:45sort of coach, I'm saying, was saying sort of there's a lot of
- 1:20:48like neural change that happens, particularly in that first sort
- 1:20:52of 12 weeks and the first few weeks in particular.
- 1:20:54So the good part is it's not adding too much added risk when
- 1:20:58I'm not otherwise doing hard workout.
- 1:21:00So that's why I'm sort of pushing it a bit more than what
- 1:21:02I normally would. And then the physio sort of
- 1:21:05fading into that with activities that are a bit more specific to
- 1:21:09addressing some of the deficiencies that have led to
- 1:21:12the injury I've got. So yeah, it's been good fun.
- 1:21:15And yeah, like you say, now's a good time to do it because you
- 1:21:18can it you've not got that same thought that I have the same
- 1:21:24thoughts that I don't want it to be detracting from my running or
- 1:21:27creating added risk of an injury when it comes to doing a
- 1:21:31training session. To Owen's points, I guess this
- 1:21:34is a good, good time to speak about this.
- 1:21:36How have you have you changed your diet to adapt to a lower
- 1:21:40overall training load or like in terms of like calorie
- 1:21:43expenditure and what you're eating?
- 1:21:47I probably, I just ate when I'm hungry, which is still quite a
- 1:21:52bit. I'm hoping that the I'm hoping
- 1:21:54that the gym and I'm hoping that I don't sort of blow out like I
- 1:22:01don't want to overeat, but I'm always yeah, which could very
- 1:22:06well happen. I don't wouldn't say There's
- 1:22:08certainly been times when I've not run that my body composition
- 1:22:12is quite different. So there's a real chance of
- 1:22:14that, but I don't know, I suppose I'm aware of what I'm
- 1:22:19eating, but but making sure that I am eating in and around
- 1:22:25whenever I'm lifted, like doing something and then maybe just a
- 1:22:29bit more aware that because I'm not doing any like as much that
- 1:22:33like I'm probably am less hungry, but I'm probably not
- 1:22:39getting too carried away. The the reality is right now is
- 1:22:41like I'm probably not. I've not done the same sort of
- 1:22:45training I have for the last four weeks of what I normally
- 1:22:47do, and I'm probably at least a month away from doing quality
- 1:22:51training again. So now is not the time to get
- 1:22:54too caught up with any of that. I think the only thing I could
- 1:22:57do is if I tried to under 8 is just cause myself some mischief
- 1:23:01at a time where I'm only only trying to get my body healthy.
- 1:23:06Yeah. Well, the good thing is about
- 1:23:08like one of the good things of running high mileage, for me
- 1:23:12anyway, is that like you can eat a lot of food to go around that
- 1:23:15and it's encouraged to eat a lot of food and I take great
- 1:23:18pleasure in doing that. So then when you take away all
- 1:23:21of that high mileage and the running element, you know that,
- 1:23:25well, this is how I feel. I want to continue to eat a lot
- 1:23:28and enjoy the foods that I mean. So that just incentivizes me to
- 1:23:33try and keep some sort of a decent training load through
- 1:23:35cross training, which is subconscious.
- 1:23:38Well, I know the benefit of that is that it's helping me keep
- 1:23:41some sort of baseline fitness somewhere.
- 1:23:44Yeah, IA 100%. That's the one of the great
- 1:23:47pleasures of running is being able to eat a heap of fun food.
- 1:23:51So Yep, no, I'm 100% with you. So yeah, we're away this week
- 1:23:56and we'll be out and enjoying ourselves, but I want to get up
- 1:24:00and exercise every morning so I can get stuck into a big brunch
- 1:24:03for sure. So we expect some high mileage
- 1:24:05on the bike next week then, or some big Columbus is in the pool
- 1:24:08or the ocean. Oh yeah, no way.
- 1:24:11I'll get in the ocean, the sharks and stuff down there.
- 1:24:13I wouldn't dare. But there's a pool and a gym and
- 1:24:16hopefully there's an elliptical or something I can start jumping
- 1:24:19on. I've been given the all clear
- 1:24:20for that as well. And our new put his hand up to
- 1:24:22the YouTube Diaries has left us, left us in the pits.
- 1:24:27So I don't know if we suspend it or are you comfortable with this
- 1:24:30one? Maybe we carried over to next
- 1:24:32week I reckon. Yeah, OK.
- 1:24:34Well, we won't let him off so easily.
- 1:24:36We'll hold them accountable. That's it.
- 1:24:39And Double Trouble, I wanted to bring it back to the clubhouse
- 1:24:45again because we still have a few legacy ones in there.
- 1:24:47Did we did Did we name the person who submitted last week's
- 1:24:51one or we keeping them anonymous?
- 1:24:53I think we renamed them, didn't we?
- 1:24:55Because. Yeah.
- 1:24:57So Adam, Nathan says people hiding their heart rate on
- 1:25:02Strava seriously must be missing something.
- 1:25:05Is it that deep? If it's a little high, running
- 1:25:07is not easy anyway. And maybe that comes from a
- 1:25:13specific example that's prompted to say that, but I will agree on
- 1:25:18that fronts like, what's the hide?
- 1:25:21Like, you want to hide the fact that your heart rate's gone a
- 1:25:24little high when you've run a little bit quicker.
- 1:25:26And usually you claim it as an easy run or like what's the
- 1:25:28score? Yeah, I'll double down on that
- 1:25:31as well with just hiding activities.
- 1:25:34Like the thing I like about Strava more than like other
- 1:25:38forms of social media is that when people give their full
- 1:25:41training week when they're sick, injured, unfit, fit, it's a much
- 1:25:47truer insight to someone and and how they've approached their
- 1:25:50training and how they've gotten better.
- 1:25:52It's a really cool picture of and it's much closer to the
- 1:25:55truth, whereas like Instagram is like heavily contrived and not
- 1:26:01really a great reflection of reality.
- 1:26:03Whereas and and I find that with people that just selectively
- 1:26:07unhide activities, it's sort of not giving the the full picture.
- 1:26:10And I always wonder like, I don't know what the motivation
- 1:26:13is there. I'm not sure what they're
- 1:26:14wanting to hide. And you can sort of manipulate
- 1:26:16privacy settings so that people can't see maps and things like
- 1:26:20that. So, yeah, no, I think hiding
- 1:26:23heart rate, hiding that sort of information like, yeah, you
- 1:26:27should, I don't know, unless, unless it's people are not
- 1:26:30making you feel comfortable, then that's fair enough.
- 1:26:32But otherwise, I'm all for sharing it.
- 1:26:34It's much more interesting. I I, I really like the
- 1:26:38professional athletes on Strava that are very transparent with
- 1:26:41those like some of the best runners in the world share all
- 1:26:44their activities and it's so insightful.
- 1:26:46Like when I first sort of took up running the like even say,
- 1:26:50say around that Cam Levens driven series like that.
- 1:26:53I think the Part 2 of his driven series.
- 1:26:55I don't even know if you can find that on YouTube.
- 1:26:57I think it's sort of you have to go through the actual flow track
- 1:27:00website to find it. Like it was a different time
- 1:27:02then and you're really just trying to connect dots on what
- 1:27:05was the truth around what people could do to improve fitness.
- 1:27:09Like you would read it in running magazines and you would
- 1:27:12hear things third and fourth hand which were probably not
- 1:27:15that true. And then people started posting
- 1:27:18all their stuff on Strava and you could sort of see what they
- 1:27:21were doing that helped them get better.
- 1:27:22And now we're sort of at the next step of, OK, we understand
- 1:27:25sort of training principles, but we maybe don't understand all
- 1:27:28the other things they're doing in and around their training.
- 1:27:31And that's the next thing we're sort of learning about.
- 1:27:33So yeah, I'm all for sharing more information to heartbeat,
- 1:27:37heart rate, or activities. Besides, it makes me think of
- 1:27:41about them maybe like sometime last year when I think Raph was
- 1:27:44telling them to like run to keep one of his runs under a certain
- 1:27:48heart rate and he's like, oh shit, I'm going to have to
- 1:27:50fucking hide my heart rate, yes. Yeah, well, that might be my
- 1:27:57return to run. Might.
- 1:27:58There might be a few that pop up retrospectively, but we'll say.
- 1:28:02Whilst we're speaking about activities and stuff on Strava
- 1:28:04and seems it kind of applies to me and you right now, where do
- 1:28:07you draw the line with which disciplines or what type of
- 1:28:11activities that you're happy with everything to go on there?
- 1:28:16Yeah, I'm happy with anything to it.
- 1:28:17Well, no. So I'm happy with anything
- 1:28:20that's sort of running or cycling or swimming.
- 1:28:24I think they're like primary parts of the platform and then
- 1:28:28maybe some SNC is probably acceptable as well.
- 1:28:31And then beyond that, like, I don't know, I'd like to see
- 1:28:35another app for it or, or a filter, to be honest.
- 1:28:38Strava, if Strava could put a filter so I could just filter it
- 1:28:40out and then it would not be, then I'd I'd be more for that so
- 1:28:44people can put what they want on there, but I don't care for.
- 1:28:48Fair enough, I just had a point and Oh yeah, I seen a meme the
- 1:28:53other day and it was like, what a lovely warm up that is well,
- 1:28:59gorgeous warm up for me to not give kudos to us.
- 1:29:01It's just make me laugh because have you ever like scrolled
- 1:29:06through and seen someone's warm up, cool down, workout,
- 1:29:09whatever. And you just give kudos to the
- 1:29:11workout because the why do they need kudos for a warm up, cool
- 1:29:15down? But then sometimes I'll do them
- 1:29:17all, I guess, depends what move them in.
- 1:29:22But I think that wraps us up. And I don't know how we're going
- 1:29:27to do an episode next week and conclude all of these distance
- 1:29:32finals that will have went on between now and then.
- 1:29:35Because we like to give the story as well, not just the
- 1:29:39result. Don't mean to kind of like build
- 1:29:41the picture and the narrative and stuff.
- 1:29:43But I haven't even looked at the agenda and tried to total up how
- 1:29:46many different sets of results we're going to have to do.
- 1:29:48But we'll have to figure out a way to do it.
- 1:29:51But yeah, looking forward to the next week.
- 1:29:54Yeah, I think it'd be a fun weekend of racing.
- 1:29:57Yeah. I mean, unfortunately, yeah.
- 1:30:00We'll see what there'll be things that stick in our mind
- 1:30:03and maybe we focus a lot on those.
- 1:30:05But yeah, we probably won't be able to go into as much detail.
- 1:30:08But yeah, I think tonight is the men's 10,000 meters and tomorrow
- 1:30:11morning's the men's marathon. So 2 good races coming up.
- 1:30:14Yeah, regarding that men's 10K, have you any hopes or
- 1:30:21predictions for that besides like obviously what what you've
- 1:30:24chosen for your selections? I just think it might.
- 1:30:27I don't. I would I, I struggle to find a
- 1:30:33obvious winner. I reckon you could main a mount,
- 1:30:35a good argument for 10 people I think.
- 1:30:39And I don't even know how it will pay out.
- 1:30:41There's a few very good Eritrean athletes, so they'll probably
- 1:30:45want to keep it fairly honest, but a lot of the like European
- 1:30:50and North American runners will be able to go with a hot pace as
- 1:30:55well. And it's hot.
- 1:30:56So yeah, I don't know. I feel like it'll get to within
- 1:31:01two or three KS and then someone will want to want to go perhaps,
- 1:31:05but maybe it doesn't and it turns into a sit and kick, in
- 1:31:07which case there's so many people that could do it.
- 1:31:09So I don't know. I don't have a good, I feel like
- 1:31:13a lot of the women's races, there's a top one or top three,
- 1:31:18you know, there's like a bit of a stand out and then in some of
- 1:31:21these men's races they're pretty open.
- 1:31:22So yeah, I'm not. I'm just looking forward to
- 1:31:27watching. It should be a good one.
- 1:31:31Yeah, similar, really. I would love for it as you get
- 1:31:33to the last mile of the last K and the camera pans to like the
- 1:31:37front pack or whatever. It's not just the East Africans.
- 1:31:40They're still like you're, you're fishing Nico Young.
- 1:31:43Yeah, on green, maybe even dressier, the French guy,
- 1:31:47because he's just kind of put it to them the other week, didn't
- 1:31:50he? Hopefully there's like kind of a
- 1:31:52bit of a mix there, you know? I think there definitely will
- 1:31:55be. I can't say.
- 1:31:57I mean, yeah, I think the more likely thing is it's like sub 4
- 1:32:01minutes the last four laps because no one wants to go out
- 1:32:05too hard. Maybe someone runs off the front
- 1:32:07to begin with a but the pack doesn't go with them and then it
- 1:32:10starts to wind up in the second-half.
- 1:32:12But that last four laps is fast and I think there will still be
- 1:32:15a few at the bell. If any of the Africans were to
- 1:32:17win it, it'd be it'd be 6 to see Kajal check out one, wouldn't
- 1:32:20it? Oh yeah, I would love to just
- 1:32:23see him just run off the front and just try and burn everyone,
- 1:32:27but gutsy move if that's what he does.
- 1:32:31All right, then we'll look forward to that and thanks
- 1:32:33everyone for sticking with us for another week.
- 1:32:35And yeah, we'll, we'll cover the results as they come in, in the
- 1:32:38clubhouse throughout the week. And we'll be here to because
- 1:32:42stuff like the men's 1500 meter final and stuff like that
- 1:32:45happening maybe like Wednesday or something.
- 1:32:47I can't, can't be waiting to speak about that until Sunday.
- 1:32:50So yeah, we'll, we'll be all over in there and we'll see you
- 1:32:54next week. See.
- 1:32:55You mate. Thanks.
