- 0:17Speaker 1: And welcome in to Jaggs am j P. Shadrick in
- 0:21Speaker 1: for Kannanie Stevens. This week, it is Week one, the
- 0:23Speaker 1: Carolina Panthers come to town to face the Jacksonville Jaguars.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Is going to a busy program ahead. Brian Sexton and
- 0:29Speaker 1: John Osier coming up. Let's get right into it ahead
- 0:32Speaker 1: of the Panthers Jaguars match up. Our big Things present
- 0:35Speaker 1: about g eh A Government Employees Health Association benefits for
- 0:39Speaker 1: federal employees and retirees, and yes week one, the Jaguars
- 0:44Speaker 1: need the winning results certainly, but the opportunity and the
- 0:47Speaker 1: process are key for the head coach.
- 0:50Speaker 2: So it is very important. I wouldn't say, you know,
- 0:54Speaker 2: the season's lost if we don't, you know, have the
- 0:57Speaker 2: much success that we would like to have. But you
- 0:59Speaker 2: definitely want to see that jump that we're talking about
- 1:03Speaker 2: in terms of the physicality, the toughness of nature that
- 1:06Speaker 2: we want to play the game. That's really what I'm
- 1:08Speaker 2: looking for, and to see how we respond to adversity,
- 1:11Speaker 2: because there's going to something's gonna happen in the game
- 1:14Speaker 2: that doesn't go our way, and I'm more so I
- 1:17Speaker 2: want to see how we respond to that and that'll
- 1:20Speaker 2: help me as we moved throughout this season seeing how
- 1:23Speaker 2: we do that, and that helps guys come together as
- 1:26Speaker 2: well as a team Brian.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Of course, that has been a hallmark of the Jaguars
- 1:30Speaker 1: over the last couple of years, adversity. They didn't handle
- 1:32Speaker 1: it very well the first opportunity to see at the
- 1:35Speaker 1: Sunday Well.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Jickie, I mean, since the midway point of the twenty
- 1:37Speaker 3: twenty three season, it's been more adverse than not. And
- 1:40Speaker 3: we've seen enough slow starts around here. The Jaguars have
- 1:43Speaker 3: only won two of their last five opening days, and
- 1:46Speaker 3: they've only won four of their last ten. So when
- 1:49Speaker 3: you've got a new coach with a new regime and
- 1:52Speaker 3: a completely different approach, you'd like some success early, especially John,
- 1:56Speaker 3: when you consider that there are the Bengals, the Texans,
- 1:59Speaker 3: and the Niners coming up in the first month of
- 2:01Speaker 3: the season. You never want to say first win, the
- 2:04Speaker 3: first game is they must win. But this is a
- 2:06Speaker 3: big one.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Yeah, Unfortunately, those numbers you just gave mean they're better
- 2:12Speaker 4: in week one than they have been for most of
- 2:13Speaker 4: the regular seasons lately. Look, I loved Liam's answer in this.
- 2:19Speaker 4: You can't in the NFL put everything on Week one.
- 2:24Speaker 4: I think they have a good chance to win. I
- 2:25Speaker 4: think if they play well, they will win. But for Liam,
- 2:29Speaker 4: I liked that he's looking for certain things. I think
- 2:32Speaker 4: he's looking for physicality defensively, how they respond, how they play.
- 2:36Speaker 4: If it looks like what he wants it to look
- 2:39Speaker 4: like and they have a bad break at the end
- 2:40Speaker 4: and they lose, it's not the end of the world.
- 2:43Speaker 4: But I think he wants to see, you know, the
- 2:46Speaker 4: Liam Cohen team start to look like a Liam con team.
- 2:49Speaker 1: I remember guys, Week one of twenty twenty, they won
- 2:53Speaker 1: the football game and then lost to the next fifteen
- 2:55Speaker 1: in a row to in the regular season. Let's hope
- 2:57Speaker 1: that's not the case certainly this season. Big thing Number
- 3:00Speaker 1: two setting the tone that we're talking about the quarterback
- 3:03Speaker 1: Trevor Lawrence. It's year five in the NFL and he
- 3:06Speaker 1: needs to take a step.
- 3:08Speaker 2: That'll be a really important for Trevor, especially in a
- 3:12Speaker 2: Week one where you're you don't know what you're gonna
- 3:15Speaker 2: get right. We have an idea, you can go off
- 3:17Speaker 2: the tape and the stats and all that. It gets
- 3:20Speaker 2: thrown out the window at times, especially in Week one,
- 3:23Speaker 2: So it'll be very important for him to be able
- 3:26Speaker 2: to live in that gray.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Man, This isn't.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Exactly what we were hunting up. How can we continue
- 3:31Speaker 2: to find a completion and take care of the football?
- 3:34Speaker 1: All right? Another new offense shown for Trevor Lawrence just
- 3:36Speaker 1: third now in five seasons.
- 3:38Speaker 5: Yeah it again.
- 3:41Speaker 4: I like his answer because as we listened to Liam
- 3:45Speaker 4: talk more and more about quarterbacking about Trevor, he talks
- 3:49Speaker 4: more about that time in the gray. It feels like
- 3:52Speaker 4: they believe that they can set up this offense to
- 3:55Speaker 4: where it can run well, to.
- 3:57Speaker 5: Where when there are clear reads.
- 3:59Speaker 4: That they're gonna times where they can get play out
- 4:01Speaker 4: of the quarterback position no matter who's there. Trevor's task
- 4:06Speaker 4: is to continue developing in the offense and get to
- 4:10Speaker 4: that point where in the gray, Brian is when things
- 4:13Speaker 4: break down. In the gray is when good quarterbacks can
- 4:17Speaker 4: become great. It's when you pay elite guys. In the
- 4:20Speaker 4: gray is everything. And I think that's gonna be a
- 4:22Speaker 4: huge theme this year, how he responds when everything's not
- 4:26Speaker 4: set up perfectly.
- 4:28Speaker 5: I don't know what to expect, but that's the storyline.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Well, we saw three series from him in the month
- 4:33Speaker 3: of August, and while he didn't show mastery, he showed
- 4:37Speaker 3: an understanding and a different how to say this, a
- 4:41Speaker 3: different level of play, right. I mean it looked to
- 4:43Speaker 3: me John, and we've talked about the New Orleans game,
- 4:45Speaker 3: there were those two third down throws on that initial
- 4:49Speaker 3: series where he climbed the ladder of the pocket and
- 4:51Speaker 3: instead of running, which is something he would do, man,
- 4:53Speaker 3: he just threaded the ball to the tight end on
- 4:55Speaker 3: both of them, Brenton strange. So there seems jp to
- 4:58Speaker 3: be a different level comprehension or mastery or whatever word
- 5:02Speaker 3: you choose when you talk about where Trevor Lawrence is
- 5:05Speaker 3: at this point, and then there's this and this is
- 5:07Speaker 3: not as easy to put a finger on. I talked
- 5:10Speaker 3: to him the week the Friday before the Dolphins came
- 5:13Speaker 3: and just asked him about his perspective. You know, he's
- 5:16Speaker 3: he's stood there and talked about, well, it's new, it's good,
- 5:18Speaker 3: you know, after Doug Peterson came in, and now after
- 5:22Speaker 3: Liam Cohen came in, and I asked him about the
- 5:25Speaker 3: opportunity for him to step into this role to be
- 5:27Speaker 3: the guy that Liam Cohen said he wants, and he
- 5:30Speaker 3: said that Liam has opened all the doors for him
- 5:33Speaker 3: to be the leader that this team says it wants.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Now it's up for him to go and take it.
- 5:37Speaker 1: You got to go step through that threshold, though, and
- 5:40Speaker 1: then get this team going in the right direction. It'll
- 5:43Speaker 1: help when Travis Hunter's on the field. The Daily Travis
- 5:46Speaker 1: Hunter Update. This from James Gladstone. Though. Yeah, he's gonna
- 5:50Speaker 1: be on the practice field. He was on the practice
- 5:52Speaker 1: field last week, but it could be week to week
- 5:55Speaker 1: to determine how much he's used an offense and or defense.
- 6:00Speaker 6: And also there's a competitive advantage to not knowing what
- 6:03Speaker 6: side of ball he's going to.
- 6:04Speaker 5: Be deployed on.
- 6:05Speaker 6: Fully, what if that's half, if that's a mixture, All
- 6:10Speaker 6: those sorts of things can vary from one week to
- 6:12Speaker 6: the next, and I think the fact that that exists
- 6:14Speaker 6: is certainly a hand that will keep close.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll see what happens week to week Brian on
- 6:19Speaker 1: this one, but the matchup will come into play. But
- 6:22Speaker 1: again they did trade up to number two. You want
- 6:24Speaker 1: to see him on the field both ways. Well, it's
- 6:26Speaker 1: so interesting, you know.
- 6:27Speaker 3: At one point last week I asked Jeff Loginman, you
- 6:29Speaker 3: know where do you think he should spend more of
- 6:31Speaker 3: his time, And then I asked Mark Dufner, the former
- 6:33Speaker 3: linebackers coach I know is going to be on Happy
- 6:35Speaker 3: Hour with you this week, what he thought, and they
- 6:37Speaker 3: were completely one hundred and eight degrees different. This kid
- 6:41Speaker 3: is so talented and he's got such a broad skills set,
- 6:45Speaker 3: elite ball skills that, at least I've been told, talk
- 6:49Speaker 3: about a competitive avantage, John. I mean, week to week,
- 6:52Speaker 3: they could put him offense seventy percent of the time,
- 6:55Speaker 3: defense thirty, flop it the next week, go fifty to
- 6:57Speaker 3: fifty one week. If he is all to stay on
- 7:00Speaker 3: the field, which is obviously going to be a challenge
- 7:02Speaker 3: at this level for him. It's not going to be
- 7:04Speaker 3: as easy as it was at Colorado for him to
- 7:06Speaker 3: play as many snaps. But he can stay healthy and
- 7:08Speaker 3: be a factor for them on either side of the ball.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Why do you have to narrow it down?
- 7:13Speaker 5: Yeah, let it go.
- 7:14Speaker 4: I think he's going to play as a starter whenever
- 7:19Speaker 4: they're in situations where a slot receiver can be on
- 7:22Speaker 4: the field on offense and then on defense.
- 7:26Speaker 5: That's what I'm not sure about.
- 7:27Speaker 4: I think he will be better initially on defense. May
- 7:31Speaker 4: not see it though, because where he's great on defense,
- 7:34Speaker 4: is anticipating the ball and going and making a play
- 7:37Speaker 4: on it. To me, I don't care how much Travis
- 7:40Speaker 4: Hunter does or doesn't play. I think the measure will
- 7:44Speaker 4: be impact plays in big moments, which has been a
- 7:47Speaker 4: problem for this team in recent years. If he makes
- 7:50Speaker 4: four or five plays this year a JP that tilt scores,
- 7:55Speaker 4: he played just those four or five playss as far
- 7:58Speaker 4: as I'm concerned, because it's about impact and this team
- 8:01Speaker 4: hasn't had big plays in big moments enough in recent years.
- 8:06Speaker 5: If he's that, he's a success.
- 8:08Speaker 3: And just one more point on him. You know, we
- 8:10Speaker 3: talked about Trevor Lawrence. Trevor has Brian Tom Jueter, who
- 8:15Speaker 3: is I think one of the best, if not the best,
- 8:17Speaker 3: player on this team. Now he's got Travis Hunter right
- 8:21Speaker 3: and a better offensive line. When you start putting the
- 8:23Speaker 3: pieces around Trevor like Hunter and you want to start
- 8:26Speaker 3: measuring Trevor's success, Hunter's going to play a big role
- 8:29Speaker 3: in that too.
- 8:30Speaker 1: No doubt about that. Our big things are in. There's
- 8:34Speaker 1: plenty ahead. We'll return and dig into James Gladstone's press
- 8:38Speaker 1: conference after the final fifty three on the roster were
- 8:42Speaker 1: named This is jaggs af Welcome back to jaggs Am
- 8:59Speaker 1: and for twelve years, dam Finders' Homes has been proud
- 9:01Speaker 1: to call themselves the official home builder of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Visit Dreamfinders' Homes dot com for all the available inventory
- 9:10Speaker 1: and go Jacks fifty Shadwick in for Kay Stevens. It
- 9:14Speaker 1: is Wednesday, Week one, the Carolina Panthers in town to
- 9:18Speaker 1: face the Jacksonville Jaguars this Sunday one o'clock kickoff. The
- 9:21Speaker 1: game presented by publics where shopping is a pleasure. Well,
- 9:25Speaker 1: the fifty three man roster cut down last week and
- 9:29Speaker 1: then the day after James Gladstone, general manager, met with
- 9:33Speaker 1: the media. Yeah, a lot of turnover on the roster.
- 9:36Speaker 1: It happens a lot when there's a new general manager
- 9:39Speaker 1: in place, but a lot of new blood for the
- 9:41Speaker 1: GN to look at.
- 9:43Speaker 6: It wasn't something that you intentionally set out on saying, hey,
- 9:46Speaker 6: we're going to turn over this percentage or this number
- 9:49Speaker 6: of the roster. It was an organic approach. And I
- 9:52Speaker 6: think when you have high demands for players and expectations
- 9:56Speaker 6: as standards, it can become easier to sift through who
- 10:00Speaker 6: who makes the most sense moving forward, and who makes
- 10:02Speaker 6: the most sense for being here. Certainly excited about the
- 10:04Speaker 6: group that we got in the moment, but can't say
- 10:07Speaker 6: that it was with any intent to get to a
- 10:09Speaker 6: certain number of percentage of roster turnover.
- 10:12Speaker 1: John and Bryan back with us now, and Yeah, the
- 10:15Speaker 1: headlines out of that last week, of course, is that
- 10:17Speaker 1: the previous regimes draft picks, a lot of those guys
- 10:20Speaker 1: were turned out of here, and they're gonna try to
- 10:23Speaker 1: see what else they can do to build this team.
- 10:24Speaker 3: A lot a couple of those guys have landed in
- 10:26Speaker 3: other places, and it's not always a case of they
- 10:28Speaker 3: can't play, it's just they don't fit the system or
- 10:30Speaker 3: the culture that we're here.
- 10:32Speaker 4: Well, it rosters turn over anyway in the NFL to
- 10:38Speaker 4: tune of about fifteen or sixteen players usually, So I
- 10:42Speaker 4: got twenty four. It made sense. I mean they wanted
- 10:47Speaker 4: to bring I think you knew in James Gladstone's first
- 10:50Speaker 4: press conference when he talked about how much rookie free
- 10:53Speaker 4: agents had played for the Rams. They're not scared to
- 10:57Speaker 4: have young players, you know. The running back situation probably
- 11:04Speaker 4: exemplifies it the best. Lecquent Allen and Beachelle Toton. I
- 11:09Speaker 4: expect those guys to have key roles. In another philosophy,
- 11:14Speaker 4: maybe one rookie running back would be in that situation.
- 11:17Speaker 4: These guys don't mind playing to Collis a free agents
- 11:21Speaker 4: make the fifty three at defensive end another example. They
- 11:25Speaker 4: are not going to be afraid to throw these young
- 11:27Speaker 4: guys and that contributed to the turnout.
- 11:29Speaker 3: They have six defensive ends, six edge rushers right at
- 11:32Speaker 3: four of them are new now one of them, Smoot,
- 11:35Speaker 3: had been here before, but they weren't on the roster
- 11:37Speaker 3: in twenty twenty four, So that tells you what they
- 11:40Speaker 3: thought of that particular position group. And look at the
- 11:42Speaker 3: defensive line in general. They had Tyler Lacy and Jordan Jefferson,
- 11:45Speaker 3: two young players they were developing, and then they get
- 11:47Speaker 3: a shot at Colin Saunders and say we can't pass
- 11:50Speaker 3: this up. It's just the way that it works.
- 11:52Speaker 1: One of the draft picks this year, Caleb Bransaw, is
- 11:55Speaker 1: unable to go unfortunately, a season ending injury for the
- 11:59Speaker 1: defensive back, and James Gladstone knew this was the right
- 12:03Speaker 1: course of action to put him on IR.
- 12:05Speaker 6: Yeah, it's unfortunate. He had a non contact injury on
- 12:08Speaker 6: his foot that ultimately we put him in a boot
- 12:12Speaker 6: with the hope that it wouldn't result in surgery. Checked
- 12:16Speaker 6: after the boot came off and it was clear that
- 12:19Speaker 6: it was going to have to we were gonna have
- 12:20Speaker 6: to go in and so he ended up having the surgery.
- 12:23Speaker 6: Still had optimism that there was a chance towards the
- 12:26Speaker 6: back half of the year that he would be able
- 12:29Speaker 6: to return and do a designation for return. Unfortunately, it
- 12:34Speaker 6: ended up being that it was going to be too
- 12:35Speaker 6: close to the buzzer, so to speak, and it would
- 12:38Speaker 6: have been some version of trying to rush him back.
- 12:40Speaker 6: Looking at the long game, it makes the most sense
- 12:43Speaker 6: to make sure his recovery timeline isn't rushed and we
- 12:46Speaker 6: can go about it the right way for him. And yeah,
- 12:49Speaker 6: it's it's disappointing because he is somebody that we certainly
- 12:51Speaker 6: had a very vivid vision for and he was progressing
- 12:55Speaker 6: at an extremely high rate. But nonetheless, we got a
- 12:58Speaker 6: good group that is ready to to bring it to
- 13:01Speaker 6: life on the grass and play together playing tandem and
- 13:04Speaker 6: looking forward to seeing that here against Carolina Panthers.
- 13:07Speaker 1: There were certainly some high hopes for Ransaw after early
- 13:10Speaker 1: in training camp, and then the injury happened, and John
- 13:13Speaker 1: it's now really a fully revamped the defensive back room,
- 13:18Speaker 1: safeties and at corner without Ransaw. There's a lot of
- 13:20Speaker 1: new faces out there on deep.
- 13:22Speaker 4: Yeah, they were ready for this because they brought Dewey back,
- 13:25Speaker 4: They brought Andrew Winger back and really like him in
- 13:29Speaker 4: that spot. I think realistically they hoped that at some
- 13:33Speaker 4: point this season Ransaw would sort of take that position
- 13:38Speaker 4: and show what they think he's gonna be, which they
- 13:41Speaker 4: really love this guy. They think he is a long
- 13:43Speaker 4: term type of guy who can start.
- 13:45Speaker 5: When you draft a safety in the third round, is
- 13:48Speaker 5: what do you expect? They love him.
- 13:50Speaker 4: They're gonna have to wait until next training camp now
- 13:54Speaker 4: for people to see why they love him. Well, I
- 13:57Speaker 4: don't think this affects him long term, but for the
- 14:00Speaker 4: short term, it's too bad.
- 14:01Speaker 3: Well, and listen, of all the position groups that needed
- 14:03Speaker 3: to get overhauled, this was the one. The safety position
- 14:06Speaker 3: was just so unreliable last year. The number of big
- 14:09Speaker 3: plays in the fourth quarter, you all remember them. So
- 14:12Speaker 3: you bring in Eric Murray, who is a veteran that
- 14:14Speaker 3: they have confidence in. You bring Dewey back, You lose
- 14:17Speaker 3: Ransaw and it hurts, but Antonio Johnson had a really
- 14:21Speaker 3: good training camp, and Rayon Lane, who is more of
- 14:23Speaker 3: a special team's guy. The draft pick from the Naval
- 14:26Speaker 3: Academy proved that he could play in.
- 14:28Speaker 5: A pinch when you need him to. So you've got
- 14:30Speaker 5: an upgrade.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Overall, It's not exactly what you wanted it to be
- 14:34Speaker 3: because you don't have Canon Bransaw, who I think was
- 14:36Speaker 3: going to be the star back there, but you still
- 14:39Speaker 3: have improved the position and now you just have to
- 14:42Speaker 3: wait for him and hope that he recovers.
- 14:44Speaker 4: What they love here is that they think Murray and
- 14:48Speaker 4: Winguard will have the communication in the back end at
- 14:51Speaker 4: a high level that can work for a year until
- 14:56Speaker 4: you get Ransom, who they do think is going to
- 14:58Speaker 4: be a star sort of going. But they think it
- 15:00Speaker 4: improves because I communication communication will.
- 15:03Speaker 5: Be better now.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Of course, it's been a busy preseason for roster changes.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Three trades already from James Gladstone this preseason, and of
- 15:11Speaker 1: course the roster down to fifty three. It will never
- 15:14Speaker 1: end though that evolution continues throughout the year.
- 15:17Speaker 6: Good teams can be built throughout the course of an offseason, right.
- 15:21Speaker 6: I think the great teams continue to evolve throughout the
- 15:23Speaker 6: course of a season. So to say whether or not
- 15:27Speaker 6: we're at the spot where I think I thought we'd be,
- 15:32Speaker 6: I can't point to it right now. What I can
- 15:35Speaker 6: say is we won't stop, and stagnition is never going
- 15:39Speaker 6: to be something that you see from us. So I
- 15:42Speaker 6: look forward to still what lies in front of us
- 15:45Speaker 6: and know that Job's not even close to that.
- 15:47Speaker 1: You know, he's going to be bold what he needs
- 15:49Speaker 1: to be. He's proven that already this season that, yeah,
- 15:52Speaker 1: game on. We'll see if this roster changes how much
- 15:55Speaker 1: week to week, but they'll always be out there trying
- 15:57Speaker 1: to churn it.
- 15:58Speaker 3: Yeah, to be honest with I'm not sure where you'd
- 16:00Speaker 3: go and look exactly right now and say, well, that's
- 16:02Speaker 3: absolutely a weak spot. You know, they improve the offensive line,
- 16:04Speaker 3: they improve the defensive line. We just talked about the
- 16:06Speaker 3: secondary wide receiver. With the investment in Diami Brown and
- 16:10Speaker 3: Travis Hunter, the running backs, the two that they drafted
- 16:12Speaker 3: that you've talked so much about, Tuton and the quint Allen.
- 16:15Speaker 3: I suppose if there was a big play linebacker, you know,
- 16:19Speaker 3: somebody that they really wanted that could fit into camp's
- 16:22Speaker 3: defense perhaps or yeah, but at this point they're just looking.
- 16:27Speaker 5: Well, they've done the addressing.
- 16:29Speaker 4: I mean clearly, when you trade or acquire two defensive
- 16:34Speaker 4: tackles during training camp, they believe that was an area
- 16:38Speaker 4: that needed addressing. I don't think in the long run
- 16:42Speaker 4: you will see this sort of training camp trade activity
- 16:46Speaker 4: from James Gladstone. But they had to get into training
- 16:50Speaker 4: camp to see sort of what they've got, and once
- 16:53Speaker 4: they did, they made some moves that they think they
- 16:55Speaker 4: needed to make.
- 16:57Speaker 5: Ideally you wouldn't be making them, but when.
- 16:59Speaker 4: Your first making over a regime, you have to figure
- 17:02Speaker 4: out what there is and then I figure out where
- 17:05Speaker 4: you need to short term get yourself better so that
- 17:09Speaker 4: you can start developing in a long term.
- 17:10Speaker 1: And then and then you just roll the ball out
- 17:12Speaker 1: and play. Yeah, see what happened at some point, And
- 17:14Speaker 1: that's what's gonna happen this Sunday at one o'clock when
- 17:17Speaker 1: the Carolina Panthers come to town to face the Jacksonville Jaguars.
- 17:21Speaker 1: We'll return in a moment and we'll dig into the
- 17:24Speaker 1: AFC South. A lot of changes in the division this year.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Will break each team down when we return on Jags Am.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Welcome back. It's Jaggs Am and we're presented by the
- 17:47Speaker 1: Field's Auto Group. See Fields First, Jacksonville Premiere Luxury Auto Group.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Go to Fieldsauto dot com.
- 17:54Speaker 2: J P.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Shadrick in for Chatannie Stevens. It is Week one, Carolina
- 17:58Speaker 1: Panthers coming to town Sunday at one o'clock. Brian Si,
- 18:02Speaker 1: John Osier alongside, and we look now at the AFC South.
- 18:07Speaker 1: It'll be a little bit before the divisional games began with.
- 18:10Speaker 1: I mean, let's start with Brian, the Houston Texans and
- 18:14Speaker 1: the team that won the division of course last year,
- 18:16Speaker 1: but some question marks in the backfield.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Now, yeah, listen, I thought Joe Mixon was the guy
- 18:21Speaker 3: that really made it all go last year. He ran
- 18:23Speaker 3: for one thousand yards and had eleven rushing touchdowns, had
- 18:27Speaker 3: twelve touchdowns total six hundred yard games, including one against
- 18:31Speaker 3: the Jags, were averaged five yards at carry. He took
- 18:33Speaker 3: some of the heat off of CJ. Stroud. And the
- 18:36Speaker 3: reason that matters is Stroud still got sacked fifty two
- 18:39Speaker 3: times last year. But so they fired the offensive coordinator,
- 18:43Speaker 3: they overhauled the line. They've got Nico Collins, but Stefan
- 18:47Speaker 3: Diggs has gone. Antonio, I'm sorry, Tank Dell is gone.
- 18:51Speaker 3: There's a lot that's different in Houston this year. And
- 18:55Speaker 3: they were counting on Joe Mixon. He's got what they
- 18:57Speaker 3: call a non football injury, means it didn't happen on
- 19:00Speaker 3: the field, but it's a foot and ankle and he's
- 19:02Speaker 3: out at least the first month, which means the Jags
- 19:05Speaker 3: won't see him in Week three. I mean he is
- 19:08Speaker 3: six and twenty five pounds. He's a low that's gonna
- 19:12Speaker 3: hurt them.
- 19:13Speaker 5: Yeah, it is gonna hurt him.
- 19:16Speaker 4: It's become very vogue this offseason to say that the
- 19:20Speaker 4: AFC South is down and then it's a very gettable
- 19:23Speaker 4: division and the jeduwars weave they can win the division.
- 19:27Speaker 5: To me, this team.
- 19:28Speaker 4: Is it is still the favorite because I think they're
- 19:31Speaker 4: a very physical team.
- 19:33Speaker 5: I think their defense is very good.
- 19:35Speaker 4: And I sort of trust them to know what they
- 19:39Speaker 4: are and want to play, which is a big deal.
- 19:42Speaker 5: Mixon hurts, but this is still the team that Jedwarys
- 19:46Speaker 5: have to go try to get well.
- 19:47Speaker 3: They're gonna still try to run because they brought a
- 19:48Speaker 3: Nick Chubb. I don't know what he's got left after
- 19:50Speaker 3: the multiple knee injuries that he suffered with the Cleveland Browns,
- 19:53Speaker 3: but their ability to run the ball because it also
- 19:56Speaker 3: protects a defense, it's among the best in the NFL.
- 19:58Speaker 5: No, I'm totally with you.
- 20:00Speaker 3: They're still the frontrunner in the AFC's house, even without
- 20:02Speaker 3: Joell Mixon. But I think this is that hole in
- 20:05Speaker 3: the dike, so to speak. You've got have to plug
- 20:06Speaker 3: it somehow. And I don't know Chubb has enough left
- 20:09Speaker 3: to be the same guy.
- 20:10Speaker 4: And Stroud's a huge storyline. You thought he was as
- 20:13Speaker 4: sending as a rookie. I like him, but there were
- 20:17Speaker 4: things last year where he has to get back to
- 20:21Speaker 4: rookie Stroud in order for people not to think he's plattoning.
- 20:26Speaker 5: I think he's gonna be fine, but he's a storyline,
- 20:28Speaker 5: all right.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Now, Let's go up to Indianapolis, John year old stomping
- 20:32Speaker 1: grounds and there are quarterback conversations. So we had for
- 20:35Speaker 1: the Colts Daniel Jones as the starter. Anthony Richardson, a
- 20:39Speaker 1: top five pick, is on the bench.
- 20:42Speaker 4: Yeah, and you know there's two sort of angles here.
- 20:46Speaker 4: One is that, boy, do we give up on quarterbacks fast.
- 20:50Speaker 5: In the NFL? You've moved on from Richardson. I get
- 20:53Speaker 5: it they probably had to.
- 20:54Speaker 4: Move on from him because of how he has played,
- 20:57Speaker 4: in his style and all the things.
- 21:02Speaker 5: They're sort of in the water.
- 21:04Speaker 4: Sort of an assumption out even with Daniel Jones, that's
- 21:07Speaker 4: going to be a disaster because of what happened in
- 21:09Speaker 4: New York in this day and age. Brian, we talked
- 21:12Speaker 4: about a little bit with Baker Mayfield last year and
- 21:14Speaker 4: guys second chance guys.
- 21:16Speaker 5: The Colts were like eight to nine last year. There's
- 21:19Speaker 5: a roster there.
- 21:22Speaker 4: Don't necessarily think that because they moved to this that
- 21:26Speaker 4: they're easily gettable. Daniel Jones, this is his shot, and
- 21:30Speaker 4: it's been happening more and more that give up guy,
- 21:33Speaker 4: which he was in New York becomes rebound guys.
- 21:36Speaker 5: So that's really intriguing for that franchise.
- 21:39Speaker 4: It's huge because otherwise they have to go draft again
- 21:42Speaker 4: next year.
- 21:42Speaker 5: Right, Yeah, you're hitting reset again. Done Moore. Well, here's
- 21:46Speaker 5: what they've got going for them.
- 21:47Speaker 3: They've got Jonathan Taylor, who is one of the best
- 21:49Speaker 3: backs in football, and a very good offensive line. They
- 21:52Speaker 3: just re upped the young offensive tackle Quit Nelson, still
- 21:56Speaker 3: an All Pro caliber guard. They're going to be able
- 21:59Speaker 3: to play the ground game, which is what changed Dykin
- 22:01Speaker 3: likes to do, and give Daniel Jones plenty of time,
- 22:04Speaker 3: plenty of opportunities for a play, actually pass.
- 22:08Speaker 5: And get it down the field.
- 22:09Speaker 3: They've got a new defensive coordinator who came in lou
- 22:11Speaker 3: from Cincinnati. That's kind of where the hole seems to be.
- 22:16Speaker 3: I think with Jonathan Taylor or Daniel Jones, they'll move
- 22:19Speaker 3: the ball and score points. The question is do they
- 22:21Speaker 3: have enough on defense.
- 22:22Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:22Speaker 4: To me, no franchise and I lived it for ten
- 22:25Speaker 4: years up there. No franchise exemplifies importance of quarterback in
- 22:29Speaker 4: the NFL the way this franchise has for what the
- 22:32Speaker 4: last almost thirty years in es since you have to Payton,
- 22:35Speaker 4: you had elite followed by elite dumb Luck back to
- 22:38Speaker 4: back Manning, and really since Luck left, they have been
- 22:45Speaker 4: in that seven to nine wilderness of trying to find
- 22:50Speaker 4: the guy, still trying to find the guy. And they
- 22:54Speaker 4: showed right dipped at the right time to get Anthony Richardson. Well,
- 23:00Speaker 4: if you dip and the guy's not there, yea, sometimes
- 23:03Speaker 4: it's until you can find the rocket ship back to
- 23:07Speaker 4: the top.
- 23:07Speaker 5: So they exemplify what this league is right now.
- 23:09Speaker 3: I think it's interesting because Daniel Jones. People forget how
- 23:12Speaker 3: mobile a quarterback he is. He ran for over one
- 23:13Speaker 3: hundred yards here against this team a few years back.
- 23:17Speaker 4: He's prototype for being able to be the bounce back
- 23:19Speaker 4: guy because he has the ability get with the right program.
- 23:23Speaker 5: You moved back. He's interesting.
- 23:26Speaker 1: All right, Let's go now to Music City, USA and
- 23:29Speaker 1: check on the Tennessee Titans. They had the number one
- 23:31Speaker 1: overall draft pick and selected Cam Ward out of the
- 23:35Speaker 1: University of Miami. He'll make his debut against the Denver Broncos.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Cam Ward's path is certainly interesting, from incarnate Word to
- 23:44Speaker 1: the PAC twelve to all of a sudden showing up
- 23:47Speaker 1: in Miami and leading them to a ten win season
- 23:49Speaker 1: in the best offensive season in Miami Hurricanes history. This
- 23:54Speaker 1: is not the Miami Hurricanes anymore. This is the National
- 23:57Speaker 1: Football League. This is assaulting Broncos defense that I think
- 24:02Speaker 1: you want a hot take, Yeah, here's a hot take.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Here's a lock. The Broncos will shut down cam warden
- 24:08Speaker 1: the Titans in Week one.
- 24:09Speaker 5: Well, you'll think, I mean if I'm walking anything, but.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Sorry, I forgot. It's not a happy hour Monday.
- 24:17Speaker 4: We don't walk on here here The Titans are as
- 24:21Speaker 4: you know, it seems like every year there's two or
- 24:24Speaker 4: three franchises draft early, throw the guy in and sort
- 24:28Speaker 4: of see where it goes. We were there what in
- 24:30Speaker 4: twenty one? You know, he's the only storyline that matters
- 24:37Speaker 4: in Tennessee. This year, throwing him in against the Broncos
- 24:41Speaker 4: is something the Titans most franchise, most franchised.
- 24:44Speaker 5: I feel like they have to do that now.
- 24:47Speaker 4: Usually I think there's three or four weeks where no
- 24:50Speaker 4: matter who you are, you're just lost.
- 24:52Speaker 5: So you would anticipate him being lost. Although I think
- 24:54Speaker 5: he's gonna be a good player. Yeah, I do too.
- 24:56Speaker 3: It's year two of their transition, right, I mean they
- 24:58Speaker 3: were the last Caveman football team. They clubbed you with
- 25:01Speaker 3: Derrick Henry over and over and over, and that allowed
- 25:05Speaker 3: whoever was playing quarterback to have a chance to breathe
- 25:08Speaker 3: and throw the ball downfield. Now they're going to a
- 25:10Speaker 3: modern offensive system that's quarterback centric, and they're now in
- 25:14Speaker 3: the first year with cam Ward giving him his opportunity,
- 25:17Speaker 3: and they've got to build a team around him. I
- 25:18Speaker 3: keep hearing that they like their offensive line, right. They
- 25:21Speaker 3: spent a lot of money on the left tackle they
- 25:22Speaker 3: brought in from Pittsburgh. They drafted the kid from Alabama
- 25:25Speaker 3: who's the right tackle. So if they got the offensive
- 25:27Speaker 3: line right, they might be something to contend with this year.
- 25:30Speaker 3: I mean, not contending for the division titles, but they
- 25:32Speaker 3: might give you everything that got on a given Sunday afternoon.
- 25:35Speaker 4: And it's interesting what teams are doing, but the Bears
- 25:37Speaker 4: did it last year a little bit. When they do
- 25:38Speaker 4: after Caleb Williams. Sometimes that first overall pick is a quarterback,
- 25:43Speaker 4: its first year head coach. Everything's sort of starting with
- 25:46Speaker 4: the Titans. It's not that it's second year head coach
- 25:49Speaker 4: with rookie quarterback. What that does to the clocks as
- 25:52Speaker 4: you move on, how you're judged is interesting because you
- 25:57Speaker 4: know the head coach will be judged based on two
- 25:59Speaker 4: years quarter back one.
- 26:01Speaker 5: Just an interesting dynamic going on around the lead.
- 26:03Speaker 3: We don't forget they changed generalman too, so I mean
- 26:06Speaker 3: they've changed a lot there, not just the quarterback. That's
- 26:10Speaker 3: an interesting story to see as they kind of figure
- 26:12Speaker 3: out who they are.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Locket Broncos over the Typans. How about that confidence Jaguars
- 26:20Speaker 1: sweep of them as well. We'll come back in a moment.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Jaguars have named their captains for twenty twenty five. Will
- 26:26Speaker 1: break it down after this on jags Am. Jags fans

- 26:57Speaker 1: a pleasure. Craving a chick and tender sub right about
- 27:01Speaker 1: now on jags Am, Glad you're with us. J P.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Shadwick in for Kai stevens our final moments here with
- 27:07Speaker 1: the Brian Sexton and John Ozer. The Jaguars have announced
- 27:10Speaker 1: their captains for twenty twenty five, first year under head
- 27:14Speaker 1: coach Liam Cohen, and here are the results. Trevor Lawrence,
- 27:17Speaker 1: Robert Hainsey on offense for Yer Luikin, Josh Hainz Allen
- 27:22Speaker 1: on defense, Jordan Lewis as well, and Logan Cook special
- 27:26Speaker 1: teams the punter. There you have a gentleman. The captain.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Lewis is the story to me among the captains, not
- 27:31Speaker 3: that he doesn't belong, but that he clearly does. He
- 27:35Speaker 3: just got here in free agency, and it wasn't like
- 27:38Speaker 3: he was this high profile superstar corner. He was really
- 27:42Speaker 3: good in Dallas, but here he's been a superstar through
- 27:45Speaker 3: the course of August. He's been a guy who's made
- 27:47Speaker 3: play after play after play and taken a secondary John
- 27:50Speaker 3: last year finished the season limping into January right and
- 27:56Speaker 3: turned their perspective around. They are a much more confident
- 27:59Speaker 3: bunch than they may have a right to deserve to
- 28:01Speaker 3: be at this point.
- 28:02Speaker 4: Well, and he's important because Eric Murray and Wingard or
- 28:07Speaker 4: veteran guys at safety at corner. It's good for them
- 28:11Speaker 4: to have Lewis bringing Hunter, even Jarion Jones along a
- 28:15Speaker 4: little bit.
- 28:16Speaker 5: It's a young room. You need those two guys to
- 28:18Speaker 5: be good. I'll talk about Hainsey and Lewis. Over a
- 28:24Speaker 5: ten year period.
- 28:26Speaker 4: You don't have a lot of UFAs who come in
- 28:30Speaker 4: and be captains except when you're doing a regime change.
- 28:34Speaker 5: So this felt very logical to me.
- 28:36Speaker 4: You have a team that's installing a new culture when
- 28:39Speaker 4: you go a new direction.
- 28:41Speaker 5: The offensive line.
- 28:41Speaker 4: Clearly needs that, the secondary clearly needed that. You have
- 28:46Speaker 4: two captains, two veteran guys as leaders. Makes sense to
- 28:51Speaker 4: have what thirty three percent of your captains as new
- 28:55Speaker 4: when you were going in a new direction. So those
- 28:57Speaker 4: two guys deserve it, and good for the six captains.
- 28:59Speaker 4: It's a big deal to players when they're a captain,
- 29:02Speaker 4: or it should be.
- 29:03Speaker 1: The game week is here. That means John, you and
- 29:05Speaker 1: I will be back doing this again this afternoon with
- 29:07Speaker 1: Huddle Up with Bucky Brooks four o'clock today.
- 29:11Speaker 5: Whether we went to or.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Not, Jaguars dot com, it's a free website jags YouTube
- 29:16Speaker 1: as well, and of course we'll be back here tomorrow
- 29:17Speaker 1: hopefully tie back in Thursday morning for jags Am. Thanks
- 29:21Speaker 1: to our entire crew, Thanks to you for watching. For
- 29:23Speaker 1: Brian and John, I'm JP Shadwick and it's jags Am.
