- 0:01[rock music] Ah, I feel like I was meant to hang off the side of a- [laughs]
- 0:24... s- side of a French castle and have pyro flying all around me. Go, Gojira, go. Right on. I'd like that idea. Welcome, everybody, to- All those fucking bedrooms... Full Spectrum Cycling- [laughs]...
- 0:34from the Olympics. Yes. Show number 265. 265. We got, uh, we got JK with- Hey now, hey now... with his... Are you gonna get a new mustache going based on your shirt, or- It is there. It's just that I'm- Which one is it?
- 0:48Is it-... been great... is it the trucker? Uh, it's not a trucker. No. Not the trucker? Oh, it's closest to the trucker. Closest to the trucker. Closest to the trucker. Yeah. Yeah. We got Tony Burger. That's me.
- 0:59[laughs] Special in-studio guest today, Mr. Ken Keene. On the scene. Ken's on the scene. Wow, [sighs] what a heck of a weekend. [snorts] It's, uh, it's Tuesday. Has everyone recovered yet? Nope. Nope.
- 1:12[laughs] Nope, nope, nope. No. Did it have anything to do with being off on Monday? Yep. No. That helped. [laughs] So the River West 24- I, I do that every year... was this past weekend,
- 1:24and boy howdy, not only was it the best weather I remember in a 24 in an awful long time- Pretty beautiful, yeah... especially Friday night, it was just beautiful. Fantabulous.
- 1:34I, uh, uploaded 11 minutes worth of people going across, uh, Center Street and Pierce just after the start-finish line- Nice... on the first lap. 11 minutes- Oh, yeah... of people nonstop- Just, just nonstop...
- 1:47streaming by. As soon as I left, 'cause I, I got, I kinda snuck in, 'cause in theory I guess they want you to s- uh, to get into- In line. That's- In number... that's long gone. Yeah, I know. Yeah.
- 1:59But I think they do- Yeah, they try... encourage it, encourage it, and I try to encourage myself a little. Try to encourage the encouragement of the encouraging.
- 2:05Yeah, but then I was like, "Wait, there's a hole right here, and I can just go rip," and I'm going over to Martin's to see a floor model, like, to- To, yeah... right at, at the start.
- 2:12Yeah, 'cause, 'cause normally you wait a good half hour after the- At least... after the stream. And that's how long, that's how long the stream was. It was long.
- 2:19Uh, i- yeah, it trickled, but it took about a good half hour for everybody that I saw from that point to get- To basically get to the point where they're riding at their own pace and whatnot? Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 2:30Yeah, even, even off the front I didn't see a bunch of people, like, just hammering right out of the starting block. Those days are gone. There are- But the, but the- In the middle of the-...
- 2:37the people that came through, uh, the start-finish line on the first lap were, like, 13 minutes. That's fast. Yeah. That's very fast lap, you better believe it. Yeah, or somewhere in there anyway. That's trying too hard.
- 2:47I don't remember the exact number. It's- That means you're ru- that means you're running red lights and stop signs- Yeah, you're, you're-...
- 2:52running over little old ladies and knocking people off their- Maybe a middle-aged white guy on a fat bike that, electric fat bike, that takes out a woman and causes a trauma. Who knows?
- 3:01Oh, what, what, what's the first year that an electric bike is gonna be the first across on the first lap? Ooh. [laughs] Challenge accepted. Wow. Tony can do that.
- 3:11[laughs] We could, we could- I, you know the- That's on a hill I'd wanna try... so have you been following the- [laughs] In the streets... the Colin and, and Jake? Not anymore. Oh, God, it's hilarious.
- 3:19I just, it's, Jake is just, he won't let it go. It's funny. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I've, I've been watching that tennis match. That's pretty good. It's pretty good.
- 3:25It's fun, 'cause, uh, 2012, the year that- He, he, yeah... that, uh, Colin smoked him on the first lap, there's clearly a shot of him skidding in front of Jake.
- 3:37The, the bone of contention was who got their manifest out first. Yeah, that. Colin's like, "I hope you still have your manifest. I hope you're proud of it."
- 3:45[laughs] Ex- it wasn't about the manifest punch, it was about the finish line. Right. And that was what I got- Yeah... gleaned from that. And not to mention- And then Jake, Jake's-... Jake's on the-...
- 3:54as, as the screenshot of it... 700 by 23s and Colin's on 26 by 4. Any more I would say 700 by 23s are, are a handicap- Right... because of all the, all the- Crappy roads... crappy roads, and yeah.
- 4:06You're, you're kind of a, you got a much easier, more relaxed time on a fat bike, for sure. So I have a question. I know I did.
- 4:14What is the, uh, didn't they, they come to, like, a head with how many contestants there are? They put a head on it. What is it, 800, 1,000? What... Do you know, you guys know what it is? Contestants.
- 4:24Um, there are, they generally cap it as a, at 1,000 participants. Yes, okay. And they kind of, that's loose because some people sign up for four-person teams and then add one.
- 4:36Some people sign up for six and only four show. I'd say there's a million people crowded- But I remember it's a total- Fathered in... I, I heard today between
- 4:44volunteers and actual registered riders who paid money it was 2,800 people, and that's not counting all the people that just showed up. Wow. Like middle-aged white guys who had an electric fat bike they rented.
- 4:57That's another, that's another 1,000 people. I was thinking 25 was what the stream was. It must be more than that. That's another grand. Hey, guess what? Mm-hmm. Guess what? Guess what? Guess what? Guess what?
- 5:03What, what, what? Right off the bat. Right off the bat. Right off the bat- Caller?... I'm pushing the button. Oh, uh, oh. Do it. Hey, welcome to the radio program. Caller, who do we have on the line? Good evening, guys.
- 5:14It's, uh, Ol' Roy calling. Nice. Ol' Roy. How's Canada, man? It, well, that's right. It's good. It's good. It's warm here and wet. It's rainy and warm, so it's- Moist... yeah, it's a little bit humid. Yes.
- 5:29[laughs] Same here. Um, I didn't wanna f- I didn't wanna f- I know it's been a while since I phoned in last, because I, I wanted to have something to tell you guys. At least I have a couple of, uh, things to discuss.
- 5:37So yeah, I mean, it was, I didn't wanna bore you with the, the same old, same old, but I've been doing a few things, doing a bit, a few rides. Um- Hit us...
- 5:45different events, a race and, uh, Ca- a, a, a cancer charity ride and, um, and such like that. So yeah, it's been a bit, it's been busy. It's been busy. Good. All right, man. Do tell.
- 5:57Uh, the f- I th- well, so this, this year was a big year for me because at the end of April the, uh, my odometer turned over f- to 50 years.
- 6:06And I decided to participate in a, a fat bike race that's held every- [laughs]... every spring. Um, well it's not, it's not just- [laughs]... exclusively a fat bike race.
- 6:14It's actually, uh, more of a cross-country, um, you know, gravel style race that they hold here. And, uh, different, different lengths b- anywhere from 100K to 75K to...
- 6:25The one I participated in was a 45, uh, kilometer fat bike ride, and I actually pulled off second place. Nice. Nice. Right on, right on. That was a good kickoff. You got a picture? Yeah. Yeah, it was, it was...
- 6:37Um, [laughs] yeah, I do have a picture, and it's, it's basically looks like I'm wearing a mud suit. Like, it's like- Send it... head to toe sand in every crack and crevice. Nice. And it was...
- 6:47But I did feel pretty, pretty satisfied that it was a- And bring footage as well... successful kinda- And he, he should have some footage. You should send that to us for a- Yeah... show note picture.
- 6:55Send it to Greg at Full Spectrum Cycling so we can have a picture of Alroy. I, I can do that.
- 7:01I can s- I have a pretty decent picture of the bike a- and me just standing there just completely and utterly soaking wet and, and sandy. But, uh, you know, it... Yeah, it was good. It was w- it was worth it.
- 7:10It definitely was worth it, for sure. Nice. I can definitely send you that picture. Nice. So you're only five years away- Yeah... from coming down and joining us on- Members for an elderly-...
- 7:18on the, on the elder team for the River West 24. [laughs] You, you have to be 55. So we're, we're making, we're making plans- Really?... to reclaim the podium next, next, uh- Next year... River West 24.
- 7:29[laughs] Or soon. Mm-hmm. And by the way, Al- Alroy, I, uh, celebrated my 50th birthday in Canada. Did you really? Where about? Uh, Vancouver. Mm. Excellent. Okay. Well, yeah, I've been there one time.
- 7:41Is that even really, is that even really Canada? I think I've told you this too, I also honeymooned in Quebec. Oh, see, Quebec's much closer. I've been... I'm a little more familiar with Quebec.
- 7:50I- We kind of just passed through. We were, we were actually... I was, um... When I was younger, I made the foolish decision to take a one-way with a, with this guy that had an idea.
- 7:58But, you know, and sometimes the ideas sound a lot... When you're in your teens, ideas sound so solid. Like, things make a lot more sense.
- 8:05You have a one-way plane ticket to Alberta, and then we just basically hitchhiked to Vancouver, and then took the ferry over to the island, and then we just kind of bummed around and bought this cr- crummy car and I, I just drove it home.
- 8:17So that was- Wow. It all worked out for the good, but it was, it was, um, it wasn't that well thought out. It wasn't a very- [laughs]... solid plan at all. [laughs] But you were how old, 19?
- 8:28I was, at the time I was, yeah, 19. [laughs] I just finished high school, and this buddy of mine goes, "Hey, let's just go out and, and be lifties at the, uh- [laughs]...
- 8:35Lake Louise- Sounds like a sound enough plan to me... or somewhere near." So- Right on, right on... buy a car and drive it home. Well, it, it was [laughs]
- 8:42with four bald tires and no spare, and, and event- at halfway point, um, it did, uh, lose its rear window, so we were kinda windowless. And- That doesn't matter... with a couple people that had never...
- 8:54Yeah, it was, it was- That's a great story... it was an adventure. Good story. I mean, it definitely- How does, how does it just lose the rear window?... perspective, the ride and everything.
- 9:00Yeah, how do you lose your rear window? Did somebody- Uh-... shot at? Yeah, like a shotgun blast or- No, no. No, it was...
- 9:06What ha- You know those little, the, they're like almost like around, they're sort of decorative rocks. They're kind of like a white, uh, quartz ty- type rock. You put them around like a garden or something like this.
- 9:15Yeah, yeah.
- 9:16So there was a guy that had stepped out to speak to one of his friends who he stopped at to hopefully stay the, stay the night, just, just somewhere to sleep, and he was trying to get my attention and he was tossing the rocks at the car.
- 9:28And before I could get out to say, "Hey man, can, don't do that," it just blew the whole back window out and- [laughs] Oh. You had, you would have had to tell him- I, I-... "Don't do that"?
- 9:39That would be terribly Canada nice. Well- Sounds like more like bricks than rocks, man- [laughs]... to blow your back window out. [laughs] That's for sideways. It got my attention, for sure. [laughs] It got my attention.
- 9:50Super. Yeah, absolutely. That's like making, you know- But yeah, I mean it-... that's making Midwest nice l- seem mean. Right. [laughs] So what else? You did your, your 50th and... Yes.
- 10:01So that was the kickoff was then, and then I did a, a, a bike packing. I did 275, uh, kilometer bike packing trip with a buddy of mine that we, we do one in the fall. And so I thought, "Oh, 275 won't be so bad."
- 10:12It was a little north of here, and it ends up, um, the terrain is very, very hilly. So it wasn't exclusively tr- it wasn't all trail riding.
- 10:21There was a, there was a considerable amount that was on either gravel roads in this.
- 10:24And I mean, we got absolutely, we got absolutely demolished because just, I don't think we were, we were s- quite seasoned enough to do it. We pulled it off.
- 10:32We managed to, we managed to do it, but it was, it was, it was quite a struggle. It was definitely more than I... I bit off a lot more than I, more than I should have- Over-... for that one...
- 10:41how many, how many days was it? But it was like- How many days was it? It was just over two days. So we had one night- Oh... stay. So was it gr- Oh... what they, what...
- 10:48He talked me into, the guy, buddy of mine, he said it was a, it was a grand depart, which is like, they have these, um, designated basically bike packing routes.
- 10:56You can kind of do a loop style, and they actually post them and they, they, they, um... You can, you can follow along at your leisure. You don't... There- there's no real timeframe.
- 11:04But this one happened to be a two-day thing where, um, say, you know, 75 or 80 people show up and then you just kinda go at your own pace and arrive at a, a campsite- Mm... in, in the evening with everybody. Cool.
- 11:16Oh, right on. And I mean, m- yeah, I mean, I don't know why. I, I felt like I ha- I mean, I've done the bike packing thing a few times, and I felt like I had a pretty good handle on it.
- 11:24I bike every day to, back and forth to work. So it's not like I'm not, you know, s- a seasoned rider.
- 11:29When I arrived at the camp near the end of the evening and everybody's there enjoying themselves, and I'm thinking, "Well, did they take a shorter route or something?" [laughs] Maybe they, yeah, they had a sag wagon.
- 11:40Yeah. S- I don't know if there was a s- if there was something they knew that we didn't, but they seemed to be, um, in much better shape at the end of the day than, than I was feeling, for sure. So what would you say?
- 11:51100- So-... 175K? It was, uh, yeah, about 175. Uh, sorry, pardon me, 275. So it ended up being about 135 per day kilometer-wise. And that is- Yeah. That's like- That's like-... 70 miles... how many miles is that?
- 12:0380, 80 miles, 70 miles a day? Well- 100K would be 60, so- Yeah... 6060, and then whatever the b- whatever the bonus was. So yeah. That sounds like math. You're mathing me. [laughs] Yeah. But it's still- It's not exact...
- 12:17still significant, for sure. Yeah. And then I did a, um... It's a charitable ride that happens here, um, in Ontario, uh, for a really well-known, um, cancer research hospital.
- 12:30So, um, I- I've done that, now that ride in particular six times, but the last two times I decided to give myself a good challenge, 'cause it is a road ride.
- 12:38Essentially, it's, it's any, your, your, any fitness level whatsoever. I mean, they do take care of you. They, they provide all the food and, and the, and the campsite and the, you know, anything- Mm-hmm...
- 12:47you could possibly need to get yourself through 100... You know, 100, it's about 100 kilo- 60 miles or plus a day, and then you go one day down and you camp at a campsite, and you go back.
- 12:57And you have to raise a certain amount, but they don't want you to, you know, you don't want you hopping on the thing with all this, the extra people that they have.
- 13:03And there was 4,200 people that did that, but I decided the last- Wow... few times I was gonna ride my fat bike. So I actually rode my fat bike in it, and that, that kind of makes a bit more...
- 13:11People do turn and look when you're riding a fat bike in this event. Es- and even the riders when you, you know, when you're riding beside them- Yeah...
- 13:16and they hear that noise of the tires coming up behind them, they, they, th- they definitely do a double take when they're [laughs] see you passing them on a fat bike, so yeah.
- 13:24So you, so you were talking about, uh, how it was like a, a, a s- a circle route and they have some, uh, established bike packing stuff. And our buddy, Dave Schlabowski- Yeah...
- 13:33up in, in northern Wisconsin, in Hayward, does a bunch of that kind of stuff, where he sets routes up and people come up and ride them, and he's working on a new one.
- 13:41And it was like, how far is it from Ontario to Hayward? And Google says, "We can't find a route to get there." [laughs] It's like, it's, it's, it's in far northern Wisconsin.
- 13:52It's got- I'm like, it can't be that far away It's gotta be fairly close. Yeah, relatively close. Yeah.
- 13:56Yeah, you know what it is really for us is when y- I think, and I haven't tried it, but I assume there is a way to do it.
- 14:01They always say when you cross the bridges from the, from Canada into the US, they always say, "Well, you know, pedestrians and cyclists, you file into this line, or you, you know, you end up at this door here."
- 14:11But I, I've yet to see anybody actually crossing the border, but I'm assuming that they give you the once over thinking... 'Cause they ask you, "Well, how long do you anticipate staying?"
- 14:18And then you better have an answer because, you know, you guys don't really want us hanging around there forever with [laughs] you know. So, um, you know, you kind of got an idea. I do.
- 14:26And if you're on your bike, you maybe, you might wanna kind of have an established route for sure, so you can sort of verify what, what you're gonna be doing while you're there. But yeah.
- 14:34So that, that's our people or your people? [laughs] Uh- No, no. Well, you know what, C- Canada's funny that way. It's, it's, um- Oh, they're funny...
- 14:41they, they give, even they give Canadians, for some reason, we have to fill out this form that allows us to come back into the country. They wanna, they want you to, uh, announce your arrival before you get there.
- 14:50So, like, if you're in a hotel the evening before you anticipate coming back, you basically have to file this form and let them know when you expect to be coming through there.
- 15:00[laughs] You know we're from- So, I, I mean, you-... we're from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, correct? What's that?
- 15:08We're from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and I've been to Canada, like, six, seven times, not for biking stuff or whatever, but just for, you know, other things since I was a kid up until- Yep... you know.
- 15:18But, um, we do things down here d- a little differently. Right. E- explain yourself, Ken. Yeah, I mean, uh- Yeah, you're not really coming through with anything there. Yeah. Okay.
- 15:28A- add some value to that, uh, to that comment. Well, just, you know, you're like, uh, th- th- you know, they want you to explain why you're coming. But a lot of people that I've known,
- 15:38uh, in, uh, Wisconsin, especially if they live in Minocqua or close to the border, they just, you know, that are avid bikers or this and that, they just burp and they just go in unannounced is my point.
- 15:52That- No, I think, I think that happens on occasion in Vermont as well. I think because they're, they have, I mean, because they kind of... Quebec and Vermont are so kind of tight-knit there- Mm-hmm...
- 16:02that there is parts along that border that it's kind of loosey-goosey as well. I don't think they're that, that well, I mean, um, yeah, there's, they're not fully stationed border patrol- Let's, let's ho-...
- 16:12I don't think... [laughs] let's hope nobody's listening that can figure that out. But, uh, hey. [laughs] Oh, I mean- So you did, so you did a bunch of rides. I'm sure there were hills.
- 16:21[bell ringing] We're at the top of the hill here- Yeah... at, uh, on our ride. Uh- So what you got? What, what you got? What you, what you, what you got? Okay.
- 16:28I, I do, I always go to, to a little bit ex- I try to find something that I haven't had before. Um, this is a, it's called Shattered Cone India Pale Ale, and it is from Stack Brewing. Hmm. From Sudbury, Ontario.
- 16:41So Sudbury's quite a distance north, uh, of, uh, of here, where I am at. So- Give us the ABV and stuff... it's, it's, so, uh, let me see. I think it is, it is 6.5. Respectable. Right on. Is, is Sudbury- It's pretty good.
- 16:56It's not bad... is Sudbury, like, a, an oil, uh, extracting area? It, it's, they call it the Big Nickel. I think there is a mine. There's mines up there. Oh. I don't know if it's gas and oil. Ah.
- 17:08But it is, there is mines up there for sure. You, you pass it by the road and there's apparently a giant nickel out the front, something that you- Interesting... that's from Sudbury where you're at.
- 17:16Uh, so- The reason I, the reason I got this... Sorry about that.
- 17:19The reason I, the reason I got this beer is because, you guys might not have heard, but we had a, in Ontario, our, um, beer is controlled, the Liquor Control Board of Ontario.
- 17:28So they basically have little stores around that you, you can't just go into a gas station or a grocery store.
- 17:35You, you can start to now, and they went on strike because they didn't want, um, kind of to water down their product. They didn't want you to be able to go just any- any old where,
- 17:45um, and buy, uh, beer and, and wine, even though we do have stores that now will allow it.
- 17:51So they had been on strike, and so kind of out of a, a bit of a protest myself, I went down to the local grocery store that has advertised beer.
- 17:58I just never wandered in, and I, as, as it turns out, I found five that I've never tried before, and that's pretty- Hmm... pretty tricky for me to... I'll try just about anything, man. [laughs] I do like variety, so it-
- 18:08Right on. Oh yeah, so it- Sounds a little- So it kinda... Yeah... sounds a little more, uh, uh, restricted than down here. Yeah. You can pretty much go to any gas station/worm farm. But that's Wisconsin. Meat shop.
- 18:20Meat shop. What was the name of the- Yeah, that's Wisconsin. We... Yeah. Give us the name of that beer again. That brewery. From Stack. From Stack. Okay. It is from Stack Brewing. Yeah. And it's called Shattercone.
- 18:32Shattercone. Okay. Okay. You see it there? Yep, yep, yep. We'll have that in the show notes. So- I just looked at- So it's- I looked at Panache-... right after... which looks- Yeah...
- 18:38very much like, uh- Text me that link so I can put it in the show notes... I can almost put it in the show notes right now. [laughs] Well, you can do that. You're- So I know Canadian- [laughs]...
- 18:45so, uh, in other words, what you're saying is that there's, uh, places you go to get, um, liquor and beer, unlike here in like, the... Let's just say Wisconsin or United States, and you go there, and it pr- it...
- 18:57To me it looks like, um, like jail. And you go there for beer. It's, it's totally like, um, sterile envi- uh, uh, government controlled environment that you go to get alcohol, correct? Yeah. Oh yeah, it's, it...
- 19:12They all kind of have a sort of somewhat of a uniform, and it's, uh, yeah, it's all very orderly and, um- Looks like a jail, dude, straight up. [laughs] If you're, if you live in Wisconsin- Well-...
- 19:21it's like, it looks like you're going up, like, to the DMV, or you're going to the house of correction- [laughs]... or you're going, you know, somewhere- Yeah... that's very sterile. [laughs] Mm.
- 19:32So, uh, just to complete the beer, uh, the beer lap here, uh, Tony and I went to our local, uh, $5 burger on Mondays place called Camino,
- 19:42and it's been somewhat, eh, inconsistent, but for five bucks, uh, what are you gonna do? Yeah. But, uh, I, we under- Yeah...
- 19:51we, we learned the reason why is that they had a supplier they were trying, and it didn't work out, so they went back to their previous supplier.
- 19:57Costs a little bit more, much better, so I think they're gonna be consistent again. But Bridget, God bless Bridget- Bridget turned us on... she, uh, she turned us on to this Three Floyds beer called Turbo Reaper.
- 20:08It's a West Coast IPA. And Tony's right, it was a little better out of the tap, but- It, it, it, it's not a little better on tap. It's still fantastic out of a can. [laughs] Boy, was it...
- 20:18Out of a tap, I'd be in trouble. Well, on a Monday afternoon, the, you know, the weekend after the- It was a Monday morning, Greg. Greg, it was a Monday morning. Yeah. Technically, I guess.
- 20:24See, that's what I was talking about earlier. By the second beer it was afternoon. That during the day early- Yeah...
- 20:28like Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, you go there early, you get the best burgers, you get the tap, and it's fantastic. If you go there outside the realm, you're taking a chance. It was- You're too busy...
- 20:38by the time- First you get the jobs- By the time we-... then you get the khakis... by the time-... then you get the khakis, then you get the women. By the time we were there for 40 minutes it was packed.
- 20:45The whole place was packed. Yep. We were one of the first people there. Mm-hmm. But there, there- Got there early, went to Zed's... there was so much smoke in there. [laughs] There... Just the burgers.
- 20:52Of course there was. Yeah. Oh, yeah. [laughs] Yeah. Lots of- That was pretty incredible... lots of flame broiled burgers. But, uh, yeah. And for the record, shout out for the fries too. Fries were pretty damn fine.
- 21:00Mm-hmm. Oh my God, those were good. And the shoestring onions. Oh, they're good. Those, those are good. Yeah. Shoestring onion rings. Good stuff. Oh, they're very good.
- 21:05But yes, this Three Floyds Turbo Reaper is really an outstanding hazy. Yeah. I'd, I'd like, uh, Elroy to come down here and sample all the good beers we have down here. He'd be here for a month.
- 21:17So you recommend the- No, probably a week. [laughs] I got really- [laughs] So you like it better than this? So- I've been doing research. I, I have been doing research. Yeah.
- 21:23It's incredible the, the amount of, of, uh, breweries and stuff that you guys have there. It, it's great. I like... That's what I like to see. It, it's awesome. The variety is the best.
- 21:30You know, everything's just different. I know some of the guys are... Some people like it, like a... They, they're very, they like- [laughs]... one type of beer, and that's the only...
- 21:37They won't stray very far, but I'm not like that. I'll, I'll basically try just about anything. I enjoy most everything, so yeah. You, what do you mean there's no Busch Light? [laughs] Yeah.
- 21:47Hopefully they don't get Busch Light in Canada. All right. Busch Nothing. It'd be like, uh, L- yeah, or the Labatt's/Molson. They- The Busch Light, yeah, we have it. We have Busch Light.
- 21:55We got, um, yeah, all your regular stuff. Anything...
- 21:58We, we ha- also have as well as the liquor control, uh, board, we all have what we call the beer store too, and the beer store is basically not, it's not a government, uh, owned and run facility.
- 22:08It's actually owned as the way I understand it by the three biggest brewers. Huh. Hmm. So like Sapporo, uh, Anheuser-Busch, and so they kind of i- it's really weird- Which is Tide House...
- 22:18because- Conglomerates that took over the government. Yeah. Oh yeah, for sure. Good. So they got a stranglehold. They, they really don't only want you to be able to get- Man... certain product. Hmm.
- 22:29And that kinda limits what you, what we can get here. All right. Uh- Interesting. Yeah, Tide House, you know, only- Don't try and buy me... only sell the beers you support and make. Right on, Elroy.
- 22:38Anything you wanna leave us with before we, uh, continue on with our programming? Start humming Ted Nugent tunes. Yeah.
- 22:44[laughs] I didn't wanna, I didn't wanna, uh, you know, take up too much of your time, but I did have, I did have a question, and maybe you guys can, can answer it, uh- Yep... today or in a la- at a later date. What is...
- 22:54Uh, what's been happening with fat-bike.com? It seems like there's been a bit of hiatus. The last, uh, article that's published was, you know, published was somewhere in the end of April or May there.
- 23:04So- Wait, before, before you answer that- Is that... Is it going stagnant or- Before you answer that, Elroy- Before I answer that-... I mean, I know...
- 23:10be- before you answer that, Elroy, please watch our video of this, 'cause I'm just gonna do this- Okay... and you're gonna have to watch to see. Okay. I will. Uh... [laughs] So here we go. Okay, go.
- 23:20I, I can tell you in, in a nutshell what's going on. [laughs] Um, okay. You know I founded that site, right? Back in the old days- Yep... 2011. Yep.
- 23:29Uh, somewhere around 2000 s- late 2017, early 2018, I got a job in Vegas making a bunch of money. And, uh- Sure...
- 23:36I, I was working 15-hour days, so I didn't have a lot of time, and Gomez at the time had some time, so he kinda took it over, and that was great. He was doing some content. He was selling some advertising.
- 23:51It wasn't paying Greg, so Greg didn't have any incentive to maintain the site- [laughs]... even though I told him many, many times the site needs to be maintained, right? So, but to do that- Right...
- 24:01I'm gonna need some dollars. Stop... Uh, whatever. This is a long story about how our relationship- [laughs]... got kind of a little hosed.
- 24:07But bottom line, bottom line- You know who played [laughs] Sarah McLachlan probably- [laughs]... in the background story. Bottom line is the site- "Oh, slowly." Bottom line is the site broke and, um,
- 24:19he also, uh, cut me out of the Facebook page that I started. Would not let me be- Oh... an admin anymore. Uh, between that and the site breaking, I had to spend, like, 80 hours getting the site even to where it is now.
- 24:32So you'll notice it looks different. Okay. It's more modern. It does... it's much faster, uh, everything. Good.
- 24:37But I'm, I'm still working on the back end of the site to get it functional again and more modern so that we can go another 10 years without, you know- Maintenance...
- 24:47so I, uh, basically I took it back over is the bottom line, but I haven't been able to start the content what with doing all of the back end stuff.
- 24:54So, uh, I sure would like to get some stories, readers' rides, stories on your races that you've done, stories on your rides that you're doing, bike-packing pictures- Yep, yep...
- 25:03so that we can get some kind of ba- you know, sort of a, a back catalog of stuff that we can get going once the site... And it's pretty close to being ready to go again. It's just probably another week- Okay, good...
- 25:14or two before I can- Content... be like, "Yeah, it's solid enough to redeploy it." So that's kind of the, kind of the story without bashing Gomez too much. [laughs] Too much.
- 25:24[laughs] I knew there was, I knew there was, I could, I could tell there was a bit of a schism there, like a schism then just because it's... I, I just didn't, you know, I don't wanna dig up any bad blood or anything.
- 25:33I mean- Yeah... it's fatbi- why are... We are fatbikers. Why are we fighting? You know what I mean? No. Like, can we- But, but he got a job at T- We're working towards the same- Can't we all just get along?
- 25:39But he got a job at Trek. So the original reason why my name is Sven- Oh... and not Greg, which is my real name- Right... is because I- Yep...
- 25:47own another bike company called Schlick Cycles, and he's like, "Well, it's gonna be a conflict of interest. You blah, blah, blah. You should, you sh- you can't use your own name."
- 25:54I'm like, "All right, well, you know, let's make up a name." Okay. So Sven came into being, which is fine- Great... 'cause it's kind of a fun thing, but now that he works for- Sure...
- 26:02Trek, I'm like, "Don't you have a conflict of interest?" [laughs] Are we gonna call you Benny? Yeah. Benny. Benny, Benny, Benny, Benny Gomez. Benny Gomez. Benny Lake. Benny, Bunny Hole. Bunny Hill, Benny Hill.
- 26:14Benny Ha Ha. [laughs] Benny Hannah. Anyway, yeah, I d- you know, uh, I don't have any animosity, really.
- 26:19What I have is disappointment that all he did was sell advertising, rake money out of it, throw some content up, and never understood how much the actual product of making the site allowed him something to make money with.
- 26:32Right. It took a lot of effort, a lot of time making that- Sure... site functional and blah, blah, blah. So bottom line is, uh- Well, he doesn't-... he doesn't have a password anymore for it, so, you know, whatever.
- 26:43Okay. Go fuck yourself. Yep. [laughs] Well, I do have, I do have some stories. I've been a little lazy as, uh, as of late. I mean, things got incredibly busy after pandemic.
- 26:52I mean, I did a lot of riding and writing and taking a lot of pictures, and I do have, I do have some things, as they call it, in the can. I, I have a few things that I'd love to, to send you, so what I'll do- Love to.
- 27:01Sure... is I'll, I just, I'll send them right up to you and directly, and then you can do with whatever you want. If they're good enough to put up there, then fine. If not- Absolutely...
- 27:08then just, you know, set them on their way. It, it's good exercise for me just to be writing stuff down and, you know, it's, it's fine. It's good, uh, it's a good exercise and it's, it's fun to do. So- Yeah, I will-...
- 27:17I will do that and I will send some your way. Yeah, I will have a, an e- an explanatory post at some time in the not too distant future with some email addresses, but greg@fat-bike.com still- Gets to you...
- 27:29a good email address, so. Yep, I believe I have that one. I do have that one in the, in the, in the list. Right on. All right. Hey, thanks for queuing us up on that- Uh, no...
- 27:37because I did want to address that at some point. [laughs] Cool. I'm glad, well, I'm glad I contributed something worthwhile to the show. [laughs] That's a good, that's a good thing.
- 27:45No, you're always, you're always one of our best guests. Sorry about being 50, dude. It's all downhill from here. Well, you know what? That's why- I don't feel 50. I don't feel it... I just turned 55, so- Yep.
- 27:54I'm 50, I'm a double nickel right now. I don't remember 55. I just turned 55 on June 22nd, so I'm a double nickel. Yeah. Well, it smells better. They always say beers for- Now for some strange- [laughs]
- 28:07So- Yeah, that's right... I'm one year after the 50th, so I'm 49, and I'm approaching my 48th birthday. Good call. See this is what I'm talking about.
- 28:16So you'll, so you'll never- I hit, I hit the 50 wall and I'm going downhill. You, you'll never drink again. So you quit drinking at 19? That's math. Oh.
- 28:23That's the only kind of math I can do is just- That means he'll be dead by then. Yeah. He needs to- I should be, I should be dead when I- By-... when I turn 19. [laughs] 50 to 19, that's 20- Before, when I turn 19...
- 28:32that's 31 years... yeah, before you can't drink anymore. [laughs] Most likely. All right, all right. Thanks very much for calling. Appreciate it. Yeah, you're the best. And you're welcome anytime. Take care, man.
- 28:43Yep, thanks for taking the, thanks for taking the time, guys, and I will definitely shoot some stuff your way. Right on. And come down and visit. Yep. I, I- I am-...
- 28:50yeah, that's in the, that's in some, that's in the queue as well. [laughs] You're always welcome. Okay, thanks. Bye. Peace. Thanks, guys. See you. Bye-bye. All right, man. Yeah, that was quite a surprise, huh?
- 28:59It's always great when he calls in. I was just thinking about him. It's like, I haven't heard from Ol' Ray in a while. And look what happens. I thought, uh, I didn't know- Who? Nice caller... are you a warlock?
- 29:07I do that a lot. Ah! So the, the gizmatron here shows, it says he's, so this would've been his fifth call. Um, probably he's called the other show, too, but- Sure...
- 29:16I thought 519 was Iowa, so I didn't know which one of those jackasses it might've been. [laughs] But it might be, it might be 509. I don't know what it is.
- 29:24Well, there was a little bit of ch- uh, chewy, like nut- Yeah, we were worried about chewy posts- Needling... and stuff, yep. There was little chewy needling posts I noticed.
- 29:31[laughs] Um, so that wouldn't have not surprised me. So we started out the show... Hey, thanks, Ol' Roy, very much for calling. Yeah, yeah. Um, we started- Oh, sure...
- 29:38out the show talking about the RW 24, and we, uh, we could talk up stories for the next three weeks about how great it was, but here's something I noticed at the bottom of the leaderboard which I'd never noticed before.
- 29:48It counts laps and miles. Yes. 9,390 laps. 43- Total?... 43,194 miles is how- Say it again. How many? All, all competitors. Yeah, all the competitors combined, 9,390 laps- People who checked in...
- 30:05and 43,194 miles. That's a big number. Uh, excuse me, but holy fuck. Without, without anybody getting killed. That's a big number. That without anybody getting killed? Without anybody got killed.
- 30:14And that's without just people that are, aren't involved- 40-... that are doing it as well... 9,000 miles in 24 hours. 40, 43,194. Yep. 43,000 miles in 24 hours. Right. Not by the same person. That's really cool.
- 30:31Golly, there's a lot of stuff on. Hey, so- I did, I did- I was there for a lot of it. But, but, but here- But,
- 30:37but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but- But, but, but with the, with the, with the, with the- But, but, but, but, but, but, but... with the, with the number calculations, how do they know?
- 30:42How do they know how long my mile was? Well, they- 'Cause I didn't take the right mile. [laughs] I took the weird mile. It's a Dalek. Yeah. No, you can sit on that one. Yeah.
- 30:53Um- Well, you could sit on the other one and just beep, boop, beep, boop- Tony's gonna- It'll kill you... Tony's gonna pull all that crap out of the box. Oh, and he falls. Nope, mm-mm. 400- It actually works Oh, come on.
- 31:034- I'm approaching 400 pounds... 400 pound capacity. Legs in the air. It works though. Legs in the air. Legs in the air.
- 31:08Um, I think the av- the- I'm Polish, I can't do that [laughs] So the lap is approximately five miles, give or take. I'm Polish, I can. I know. I would just... Um, yeah, that thing is so cool.
- 31:18I was looking for a golf, like a golf, uh, stool to do some podcasts with. Seat cushion for it. Yeah, yeah. There's one. They make one. Mm-hmm. Costs 19 bucks.
- 31:28I didn't want to s- y- your butt isn't worth that much money, so. Well, yeah it is. Um- I'm 55... so, uh- [laughs]... I was looking for just a regular stool, like one of those kind of foldy up ones- Yeah...
- 31:37so that we can do some interviews on the bike with, uh, uh, I'll show this thing in a video at some point down the road, but I wanted a couple of those things that were portable, but this is way portable.
- 31:48I thought it looked like a dog dish that you might- Yeah, totally... you might, uh, you might put your doggy water in, but no, it's more of a s- It's more for looking through. Yeah.
- 31:57[laughs] It's, uh, it's not- No, good buy though. That's, that's nice... it's not for eating. I have a huge... Look, look at my big old-timey tape measure. Right. And I'm going to, like, snap and boom, I can- Wow...
- 32:05yes, yes, yes. Yeah, that, that would go that, uh, 43,194 miles. Right? For sure. That's impressive. I, I, I, I left this up here. Every, a lot of people probably know what it is, Nuun Sport Hydration.
- 32:19It's what I give credit to, at least in part, for not feeling like total crap on Sunday. Couple of 16-ouncers of these guys over the course of the 24 hours, felt pretty good on Sunday, oddly enough. Mm-hmm.
- 32:33And bringing it all around with, uh, old Canadia, uh, the porch beers of Labatt's kind of hit the spot at times. [laughs] I was like, "Mm." Point. We had Point. Oh, that was Point. Point. I kept thinking it was Labatt's.
- 32:50It's blue. It was, it's blue. Yes. It's not Labatt Blue- It was Point... but it is Point. All right. So I stayed up the 24 hours. You did. And that's why I thought- Yeah... the blue cans were Labatt's.
- 33:00Yeah, I, I, I saw you- Thank you kindly... catching a few Z's in the chair every now and then... a couple. I feel bad I missed, uh- I, I closed my eyes for, like, uh, 10-minute bursts. Yep.
- 33:08Who- But- I, I'm, I'm pissed that I missed- I didn't lay down ever... the two o'clock show, 2:00 AM show. Ever. Okay. Mike, I got about two hours in. Mm-mm, none. [laughs] It was, it was either sitting, and that was it.
- 33:22It was sitting and head, "Well, that was sitting for about 10 minutes." Well, no, sitting. That's what I'm saying, sitting. I didn't say- Sitting. Oh, I, I laid down. I took a nice, nice nap. Oh, a five-hour nap. Yeah.
- 33:31Well, it's, it's- Yeah... it's not a full night's sleep. It's only five hours. That's about what I get every day anyway, but- Speaking of- But see, no, I was, I was not a biker.
- 33:38I was one of them other people, the bystanders- Mm... that were going through the, the fabric. I don't think I was technically a biker until after either.
- 33:46[laughs] You, you know, I mean, friends that have, you know, apartments, houses here and there, and the whole...
- 33:52Well, you know, one of the cool things about Riverwest 24 that, uh, uh, I think it's, like, you know, the, the, the coolest party of the year in, uh, at least in Milwaukee, and perhaps in the world, is because there's athletics with the biking and, um- Athletics with the drinking...
- 34:10th- th- there's camaraderie, and then there's, like, like you were saying, like, you know, how many- Water Street... miles were, were driven with the...
- 34:16And these are the people that are, that are, like, um, signed up, and they're actually involved, but then there's another 1,000 probably bikes that are in 24 hours moseying around the neighborhood doing a little this- Sure...
- 34:29little of that, little of this. Absolutely. You're right. You know, doing the five laps and blah, blah, blah. Knocking people off bikes. Y- th- thank you, and, you know, cutting you off course and all that kind of stuff.
- 34:39You've done this before. Have- You know... having the big lights in your face- You know-... during the dark hours when your eyes are- You know-... enjoying it...
- 34:45so I, I will digress- I wasn't going, I wasn't gonna have epilepsy, but- Actually-... but I felt like I was gonna have epilepsy... it wasn't, it isn't digressing, but I was really shocked at- Petrifying...
- 34:54how many people tried to pass people on the switchback this year. Uh, that's why I, that's why- Like, why in the fuck-... I avoid... are you trying to pass someone when it's barely two lanes to start?
- 35:03I had to call out a couple of guys, and- Was one of them Ron Hockersmith? Um, no, I called him out some other place. [laughs] Um, but literally, if I was not on your Osmium cargo, cargo bike- Omnium...
- 35:14Omnium cargo bike, one guy was heading straight at me. I'm like, "I'll win, dude." Yeah, you can- "I could run straight into you, and I'm gonna, I'm gonna saw you in half- Inhale him... the way this bike is designed."
- 35:24Just inhale him... yeah. Like a buzzsaw. And you're trying to pass a family. I'm like, "Why?" You know, I did yell, "What the fuck, dude?" I'm like- Yeah. The problem was h- uh, the whole- Oh, look at my finger...
- 35:37the whole- There we go. That's enough... I used that every single time. And it screwed me. I have no problem with it. Yeah, yeah. I just didn't wanna roll my dice with- That's enough... that single lane whatever.
- 35:45Yeah, it was- But I just used, I used Water Street up to Humboldt back again and down through the beer line, and- Not a bad- That's why I'm saying... idea. I have you.
- 35:53I have, I have more miles put in than is reported, let me just say. So, oh, so this is actually 43,248 miles. Yeah, mostly. At least- We're adding some onto that. Yeah. Yeah.
- 36:04Well- That's definitely, that was registered riders... my mine came out to 23 miles. They computed it as 23 miles, and I will say it was 24 miles. All right. So I can get that 24 number established. For next year. No.
- 36:15It's- For this year... 20- 'Cause I didn't do two, 24 laps. Fuck no. You were gonna do 24 laps. Yeah. Yeah. Fuck no. Th- th- no way in hell I'm gonna pull that off. [laughs] That was very, very aspirational.
- 36:23That was, uh, that was ambitious. That was. I was- I was on year three. I did 18 and a half laps. Little half. Yeah. I did, I did 100 miles one year. A four, a foursome. Yeah.
- 36:33We've, uh, we've, uh- I did solo 100 miles one year. Yeah. Burp, burp, burp. Done a lot Well, our team did tremendous Here's something weird. I wanna say this before because, you know, we get- Oh my God, we're late...
- 36:44we're, we're rolling. But guess what State Bicycle has now? Titanium. 16 of them left, so if you... It's time-sensitive. Right If you wanna get one, get in there, 'cause- Wow...
- 36:53dude, 1299 for the frame, 2499 for a complete- For a full bike?... titanium bike. What? The gravels? Yes. Hold the phone. They are the gravels. No, it's an all-road bike. See, the all- An all-road bike?
- 37:02They, they are the smart people that say- An all-road bike... all-road and not gravel. Okay. All right. We were calling them all-road in the '70s. No, you can't ride...
- 37:09I'm sorry, you can't ride a gravel bike on the road. It's an all-road- It says right in the title... bike. I know. All road bike. There, there nowhere to be. It's, oh, man. It's perfect.
- 37:18It's the most tremendous- It's a perfect bike. It's a Bigley bike... it's the most, it's the most travelous, tremendous bike. And as a, as much as I l- uh, love this idea, spam comment of the week.
- 37:27It's a new segment because they're so good. When I clean out the spam every week- Oh, no. Give me one... check it out.
- 37:33Do it,"What I do not understood is in truth how you are not actually a lot more smartly liked than you may be now." We're crazy wow guys.
- 37:43"You, you are very intelligent, you realize therefore significantly in the case of this topic, produced me individually, imagine it from numerous, numerous angles." That's AI.
- 37:54That's a really poorly written AI right there. I love it. I love AI. That's, yeah. This is the greatest thing in the world. It gives us something to talk about every week. Right.
- 38:01The spam AI comment of the week, or it's an ESL person maybe. It's AI. I don't think that's even ESL. It's AI. I, I work with a lot of people at ERS, at ESL, but- But, but how is it, what's it, what's it AI-ing off of?
- 38:12Not the stuff in the article. "I like you Americans with your crazy pants and your good rock 'n' rolls." I mean, that's- Mm-hmm... kind of the- Yeah... you know.
- 38:20Uh- That's words, that's what I'm hearing, but not fully... here, here's the state of the bike industry. Yeah. Shimano bike-related sales down 21% year over year for the first half of 2024.
- 38:32[singing] They're all killing, they're all hurting hard. Yeah. [singing] Excessive inventory. Yep. Say it with me. Excessive inventory. Ah, well, we had Ken Keen on the show.
- 38:43So I'm still here, so is that what I should buy? I just, um, uh, had Greg pick up my, uh, um... He figured out that I thought it was the '80s Trek bike. It was from, uh, '90, uh, '4, '95, so that's a good thing.
- 38:58I had another bike there- No, your Trek is from the '80s, bro... '80s. I, I said- The '80s... '90s. That's dys- dyslexia. '80s, bro. Living in the '80s. Either '80, I, I researched it. Either '81 or '82. I said '90s.
- 39:08That's dyslexia. So anyhoo- I love it... but I want an, uh- Me doing it... so should I get a Shimano, like a, a mountain bike kind of thingy then now? Uh- 'Cause I need one of those for the winter...
- 39:18Shimano's components. Mountain bikey thing, I dunno. We'll go over to Dream Bikes and see what they got over there. Right. Yep. Great place, but yeah, your, your bike is, um, one of only two years that it was made.
- 39:29Oh, pancakes. Only did two laps. Awesome. Um- Awesome... I dunno How many did we do? I don't even know how many laps we did as a team. I did five. I did five damn laps. We did 15, but how many bonuses? Or f- Nah...
- 39:4014, 16. No, we didn't, we didn't do as well as last year- What was your name again?... either way. Uh, Scardina's- Mm-hmm... S- Saucy-... Saucy Rolling Meatballs. Rolling Saucy Meatballs or some such.
- 39:53[singing] Oh, yeah. You know- They ran out of manifests this year. You know that, right? Mm-hmm. They had to go find old ones- Oh. Yep... for people to punch Team 26, 15 actual laps. And- 20 bonus laps, so 35 total.
- 40:08Ain't bad. Last year we did 61, so. It took a whole hour- That's huge... for that first lap, I tell you. Well, there was one that was four hours long- Yeah... when we were all sleeping.
- 40:16[laughs] I think there was one- Four hours... I think I have one where it's a 19-hour gap. [laughs] Team fastest, slowest. Who was there this year? Oh, yeah, my hot lap was, like, 50 minutes.
- 40:26Yeah, but those have changed over the years, correct? But that, but that, but that was at 5:00 in the afternoon on Saturday. You know, when I'm already- Those have changed over the years... I'm, I'm just pss, pss, pss.
- 40:34You know- I'm fused... you're, you're, you're going for a glass of whiskey or doing this. It, over the years it's changed. You've changed, man. You know? All right. Right? You used to be cool. You tell me.
